- 0:11Speaker 1: patri Gets Unfiltered. I just want to set everybody's minded ease.
- 0:16Speaker 1: When Fred mentioned at the top that as he said
- 0:19Speaker 1: to the team this morning, he meant us, not dot team.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Thank you, Paul. Fred called a team meeting and Kack
- 0:25Speaker 1: Jones and the boys don't listen to French. I'm gonna
- 0:27Speaker 1: do some crack research over the next two days, so
- 0:29Speaker 1: I want it right. Quite a few Patriots been selected
- 0:32Speaker 1: of that possession over the years. Chandler Jones, you just
- 0:34Speaker 1: call him Shan Shandler. That's one of my tips. Shandler.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Why I'm saying, what what? What is your French Canadian
- 0:40Speaker 1: in him? Because it's French and French is classy. He
- 0:47Speaker 1: smoked the guns, what you know, he smoked the chronic
- 0:52Speaker 1: at stronic stronic. Right, I'm excited though, Cincinnati here, that'll
- 0:57Speaker 1: be that will be fine next year, that'd be fun. Yeah, fine,
- 1:01Speaker 1: uh yeah. It's Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan. All right,
- 1:09Speaker 1: Welcome the Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here a Chilette Stadium,
- 1:14Speaker 1: our first Thursday off season show, and I'm coming to
- 1:19Speaker 1: you live from my office. I'm not in the studio
- 1:22Speaker 1: because it sounds like you need to pull on the
- 1:23Speaker 1: string on that tin can. Yeah, oh it doesn't sound good,
- 1:27Speaker 1: Matt said. It sounded good, sounds right now, it's it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: all right, it's all right. Yeah, we can help. Fine,
- 1:34Speaker 1: we can hear you. Someone snitched me out as a
- 1:36Speaker 1: close contact. So I have to I have to. You
- 1:39Speaker 1: have to. You don't have COVID your bubble boy today though, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I just I have to socially distanced. And I figured,
- 1:46Speaker 1: you know, being in the studio with you guys for
- 1:48Speaker 1: two hours is yeah, not good. That wouldn't be good.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Not good. Right, I might get a call from HR.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But anyway, Paul's out today, Uh, he's actually today would
- 1:57Speaker 1: be the day, you know, we'll get people. I was
- 1:59Speaker 1: asking for video. Yeah, today would be the day to
- 2:02Speaker 1: have a video where Paul is. Oh, I don't know
- 2:05Speaker 1: about that, buddy, he's getting his colonoscopy today. Yeah. I
- 2:09Speaker 1: don't want to see anything of I don't want to
- 2:11Speaker 1: see that doctors like this seems to be a dumping ground.
- 2:17Speaker 1: What's going on? To be a fly on the wall
- 2:21Speaker 1: for those results? O man, Oh god, it's like, what's
- 2:25Speaker 1: going on? You know, I know, well, as hard as
- 2:27Speaker 1: the Patriots had it in Buffalo, I don't think anybody's
- 2:29Speaker 1: got harder than Paul's doctor right about now, So the
- 2:32Speaker 1: oceanographers are there, It's like, do we have a boot
- 2:34Speaker 1: playlf George Stanza shows up distracting the golf ball. We
- 2:41Speaker 1: hope he's doing well. Yes, we do, we kid, Yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 1: we're We're all gonna be there sooner or sooner. You know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: Paul is a pain in the ass sometimes, but now
- 2:49Speaker 1: he has a pain in the ass, so well, yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: wake up. You won't remember a thing, right, all right.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It was like Northeastern playbook up all right, So we'll
- 3:00Speaker 1: be here for the next two hours. Eight five five
- 3:02Speaker 1: passive US taken outline web radio at Patriots dot com
- 3:06Speaker 1: is the email address, and the analysis of the two
- 3:09Speaker 1: thousand twenty one season continues. Uh, you know, everybody's got there, say,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, what's going on? I think we went over it, Uh,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know pretty well on our last show. We divided
- 3:21Speaker 1: it up between the players and the coaches. Um, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: but we're going to continue to talk about that and
- 3:28Speaker 1: what should the priorities be going forward? Um, you know,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I think really think it's across the board, don't you
- 3:36Speaker 1: You know, yeah, I mean there's there's a lot of
- 3:41Speaker 1: work to do. I think it's just a matter of
- 3:43Speaker 1: prioritizing now, you know, And Bill is said in the past,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you know, when whenever a season ends, whether it's in
- 3:48Speaker 1: the playoffs, the regular season, the super Bowl, they want
- 3:51Speaker 1: to take you know, at least a couple of weeks
- 3:53Speaker 1: to you know, they need to. They're getting off an
- 3:58Speaker 1: enormous hamster wheel. You know, we think we're on one,
- 4:01Speaker 1: which we kind of are. We get in a little group,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but they need to get off and recharge their own,
- 4:06Speaker 1: you know, brain cells and figure out, Okay, let's look
- 4:10Speaker 1: back at the season now with fresh eyes. What do
- 4:13Speaker 1: we do right, what do we do wrong? Where can
- 4:15Speaker 1: we improve? That starts to prob they have to do
- 4:18Speaker 1: all that before they can even get into how they
- 4:21Speaker 1: want to improve the team, because they have to they
- 4:23Speaker 1: have to self evaluate that, you know, they have to
- 4:25Speaker 1: they have to figure out where they think the priorities
- 4:28Speaker 1: are in terms of making this team better in twenty
- 4:32Speaker 1: two So, I mean, you make a good point, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: Bill has said, you know, the worst time to make
- 4:36Speaker 1: a decision is right after the season, Yeah, when you're
- 4:39Speaker 1: emotionally investment, especially after the way it ended. I mean,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I don't know about you guys, but a lot of
- 4:43Speaker 1: like the conversations I've had with random people over the
- 4:46Speaker 1: last few days, it's just so jarring how badly the
- 4:49Speaker 1: defense played in that finale, And it's just it's hard
- 4:52Speaker 1: to like put that aside and not overreact to it
- 4:56Speaker 1: and think that that needs to be the driving force
- 4:59Speaker 1: of the off season here, because I think you're you know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: you're right, they got to take it, and even Bill
- 5:02Speaker 1: said after the season, we're gonna look at all, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: all the games and take them all in. But it
- 5:07Speaker 1: was just so strikingly bad that defensive performance against a
- 5:10Speaker 1: team that you know, they didn't really spring something on you.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And it's just I'm struggling here, whatever we are, four
- 5:16Speaker 1: or five days out getting over that still, like just
- 5:20Speaker 1: not having that be the first thing that pops in
- 5:22Speaker 1: my mind when I look back at this season and
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know, start to think about, all right, what are
- 5:25Speaker 1: the good things, what are the things to build on?
- 5:28Speaker 1: It's just hard to look at that defensive performance and say, so, so,
- 5:30Speaker 1: what do we what do we got to build on
- 5:32Speaker 1: off of this. That's that's where I'm at right now.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Hopefully it'll get past that. But I think you're right.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I mean, it's one part you want to see past it.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But on the other hand, it was kind of representative
- 5:41Speaker 1: of a lot of things. Yeah, and it's it's even
- 5:44Speaker 1: more jarring because we thought going into this season that
- 5:48Speaker 1: the defense would be one of the main reasons why
- 5:51Speaker 1: they'd be competitive. And you know, for a while there
- 5:54Speaker 1: they were one of the reasons. You know, in games
- 5:56Speaker 1: when the Patriots had their leads, you know, they were
- 5:59Speaker 1: able to say, all right, you know, defense made some
- 6:01Speaker 1: big plays. Like you know, we're going through our right now.
- 6:05Speaker 1: We're going through the season to compile our annual Lighthouse
- 6:07Speaker 1: Awards for Patriots dot Com. You can look for that
- 6:10Speaker 1: later on this week. Um, but we're going back and
- 6:12Speaker 1: looking at some of the big plays and a lot
- 6:14Speaker 1: of them were defensive ones, you know, pick sixes, timely
- 6:17Speaker 1: ones like uh, you know, Adrian Phillips in Los Angeles
- 6:21Speaker 1: and um, j C. Jackson's against right you know, big plays,
- 6:26Speaker 1: forced fumbles. Jac Jackson's forced fumble against Tennessee. As you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: if Deonta Foreman makes that run completes it, that's a
- 6:33Speaker 1: tie game, and maybe the Titans take the lead there
- 6:36Speaker 1: and all of a sudden jac Jackson comes in and
- 6:38Speaker 1: knocks it out. So the defense made some good plays
- 6:40Speaker 1: throughout the year, but it looked like they really fell
- 6:43Speaker 1: off a cliff. They did at some point. The turnovers
- 6:46Speaker 1: dried up, and I mean we talked about that all year.
- 6:47Speaker 1: If that they you know, would would leaned on that
- 6:50Speaker 1: a lot, and they've certainly done that in the past
- 6:52Speaker 1: when they quite haven't quite had the defense. But I
- 6:54Speaker 1: just didn't think they were as reliant on turnovers as
- 6:56Speaker 1: they were. And there's just something weird about playing bad
- 6:59Speaker 1: defense and how it connects to the takeaways you're getting.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So like, clearly they were playing bad defense down the end,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but it also seemed to like undercut all their turnovers
- 7:09Speaker 1: too that they were getting before you know, it just
- 7:11Speaker 1: all went together. I don't I don't know. Is it
- 7:14Speaker 1: as simple? And do I sound any better? Yeah? How
- 7:16Speaker 1: about the same. Yeah, somebody said, quick, lassie, go get
- 7:20Speaker 1: help Fred fell down. I don't know if it's something
- 7:24Speaker 1: I can, but I'm coming up all right anyway out
- 7:27Speaker 1: of the booth. I mean, is it as simple as
- 7:30Speaker 1: the defense fell off when they started playing better opponents.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I think so and I and I and I know
- 7:36Speaker 1: and I know that you know, Paul not here right now,
- 7:39Speaker 1: who's been you know, pounding kind of the talent thing.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And I just I just think even with less talent,
- 7:46Speaker 1: they've done more than they did in that game against Buffalo,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and they did more against other teams, even Miami, Like
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, So, I don't disagree that there's an issue
- 7:54Speaker 1: of needing, you know, younger guys that are up and
- 7:57Speaker 1: coming and not trying to squeeze what you cannot of
- 8:00Speaker 1: the veteran guys. But I also just don't think that
- 8:02Speaker 1: they played up to the some of their parts which
- 8:05Speaker 1: they are, which they did have. I think that they
- 8:07Speaker 1: underachieved with the talent that they did have. They also
- 8:11Speaker 1: there were times, even during the wind streak and earlier
- 8:14Speaker 1: in the season, when we saw teams were able to
- 8:17Speaker 1: run against them, and that was that was very disconcerting
- 8:21Speaker 1: because that was one of the things for the past
- 8:22Speaker 1: couple of seasons we were saying, boy, they're really vulnerable upfront,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and what do they do? What do they do? This
- 8:27Speaker 1: offseason they made an effort to try to bolster that
- 8:30Speaker 1: that front, that defensive front, and we thought, Okay, they
- 8:33Speaker 1: realized this. They're getting players that they field, are going
- 8:36Speaker 1: to come in here and are going to solidify that.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And to some extent, like there were times like you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: they had some some fourth DOWND stops here and there.
- 8:44Speaker 1: The rushing numbers weren't quite as glaring as they were
- 8:49Speaker 1: in the past couple of seasons, but it was still there.
- 8:52Speaker 1: When teams needed to run and gain certain amounts of yardage,
- 8:55Speaker 1: they were able to get it in crucial times. And
- 8:58Speaker 1: that was something that's happened throughout the season, and that
- 9:01Speaker 1: gave me concern as we were going along, like this
- 9:04Speaker 1: is something that is problematic and could come back to
- 9:06Speaker 1: bite them later on. And I think they really were
- 9:08Speaker 1: lucky to avoid a lot of the passing teams because
- 9:10Speaker 1: you know, my concern with the defense the whole time
- 9:13Speaker 1: was just when they run into a team like we
- 9:14Speaker 1: saw in Dallas, let matchups and you know, deep receivers,
- 9:17Speaker 1: and I think that all you know, was apparent against Buffalo,
- 9:20Speaker 1: who it really didn't even matter that you know, they
- 9:23Speaker 1: aren't a run heavy team. I mean, it just the
- 9:25Speaker 1: Patriots knew what they did they still couldn't really stop it,
- 9:27Speaker 1: and once it all started rolling, everything worked against them.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So I don't I don't know where to start. Could
- 9:33Speaker 1: could an explanation there be that the Patriots, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 1: without Gilmore, without Jonathan Jones, had to do so much
- 9:43Speaker 1: to protect coverage, you know, to kind of you know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: work around that that they were deficient against the run
- 9:52Speaker 1: um you know, I don't know. Yeah, you know J. C.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Jackson was your number one corner, but after that, I mean,
- 10:00Speaker 1: was there and maybe there was so much effort to
- 10:03Speaker 1: cover that up that had hurt other areas. Yeah, I mean,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I think it's interesting too that you know, even Bill
- 10:09Speaker 1: acknowledged toward the end that they that they were playing
- 10:12Speaker 1: more zone. And you know, I've said many times, I've
- 10:15Speaker 1: always been under the impression that their philosophy was that
- 10:17Speaker 1: you got to you gotta have the athletes and match
- 10:19Speaker 1: up in man. And you know, it goes back to
- 10:22Speaker 1: the draft and you know, talking about not feeling like
- 10:25Speaker 1: they did enough at that position, and you know, obviously
- 10:28Speaker 1: the Jonathan Jones injury that killed him, and then Mills
- 10:31Speaker 1: goes out with COVID that was I mean, I don't
- 10:33Speaker 1: know how much of a difference he really would have made,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but I think that was the icing on top. So
- 10:37Speaker 1: I just think when you go into this offseason, do
- 10:39Speaker 1: you say we got to remake our front seven and
- 10:41Speaker 1: really think about rushing the passer and stopping the run.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Or do you say, we got Jase Jackson. He's a piece.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Let's invest in him and put some pieces in the
- 10:50Speaker 1: secondary around him. We'll figure it out up front. Maybe
- 10:53Speaker 1: you got to bring along some of these guys who
- 10:54Speaker 1: haven't done much in their first two three seasons. That
- 10:57Speaker 1: that's the choice. I think that they kind of have
- 10:59Speaker 1: to make, and that's what I'm interested to see philosophically,
- 11:03Speaker 1: where they spend the money that they have, whether it's
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know, JC and the back end, whether they try
- 11:08Speaker 1: to mix it around a little bit. I just I
- 11:10Speaker 1: think there's a lot of moves to do, and I'm
- 11:12Speaker 1: not sure that they have enough to do it all
- 11:14Speaker 1: and really address everything. I think they're going to have
- 11:16Speaker 1: to be a little bit light on something again, and
- 11:18Speaker 1: they're not to choose what. Yeah, I mean, there's the
- 11:23Speaker 1: cap issue. You know, they're not going to be able
- 11:26Speaker 1: to do what they did this year, right. First of all,
- 11:29Speaker 1: they don't have the money second of all, they'll have
- 11:30Speaker 1: more competition. Right, last year was the perfect storm because
- 11:34Speaker 1: other no one else had the money the Patriots at Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and the cap went down because of COVID. So the
- 11:42Speaker 1: Patriots you know, struck while the iron was hot. That's
- 11:45Speaker 1: not going to be the case this year. They're not
- 11:46Speaker 1: going to have that opportunity. Yeah. Yeah, And it's it's
- 11:49Speaker 1: prioritizing it. I mean, I think that generally they're in
- 11:51Speaker 1: okay shape on offense. I mean, I know everyone will
- 11:53Speaker 1: will say they need to, you know, get better and
- 11:55Speaker 1: keep pace and have a more explosive offense. But you know,
- 11:58Speaker 1: really I think it goes down to guard, right tackle
- 12:01Speaker 1: and the third down back and you know, those are
- 12:03Speaker 1: those are the pieces you got to fill this offseason
- 12:05Speaker 1: just to get back to where you were. But I mean,
- 12:08Speaker 1: I think we'll all be on the same page yet
- 12:09Speaker 1: again with the date two wide receiver group, explosive guys.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I mean diving into that a little bit um, you know,
- 12:17Speaker 1: in the last few days, and really just the overview.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I mean it's again it's all these receivers coming out
- 12:22Speaker 1: with the spread offenses, and you know, there's always going
- 12:24Speaker 1: to be speed and you know, finding a guy who
- 12:26Speaker 1: can can do a few different things, maybe return some
- 12:28Speaker 1: punts for you. I mean, it's just I think that
- 12:30Speaker 1: could that could be an easy fix to get the
- 12:32Speaker 1: offense kind of up and back to where it was.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Plus you get back and those guys working all off
- 12:36Speaker 1: season and developing a little bit and and you know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: earning each other's trust and all that as they continue
- 12:41Speaker 1: to develop. I also think, um, your point about what's
- 12:47Speaker 1: the philosophy going to be yeah about this approach? What
- 12:50Speaker 1: are they going to do with a lot of these
- 12:52Speaker 1: aging defensive veterans who you know, maybe we're part of
- 12:57Speaker 1: the reason why this defense slowed down towards the end
- 13:00Speaker 1: and why they you know a lot of the same places.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Are they gonna Are they gonna completely just say okay,
- 13:07Speaker 1: look we need to just tear it down to the
- 13:09Speaker 1: studs and try to build around what little we have,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, bar More, maybe Jackson if they decide they
- 13:16Speaker 1: want to keep him, Um it's a jugger like who
- 13:21Speaker 1: else like they might have like a very few uh
- 13:24Speaker 1: defensive youngsters that they say, Okay, these guys we know
- 13:27Speaker 1: we want, now let's build out from there. Yeah, which
- 13:30Speaker 1: which really I mean, thinking about it, it hasn't happened
- 13:32Speaker 1: a lot, And I kind of flashed back to to
- 13:34Speaker 1: two thousand and five, when you know, unfortunately Bruski had
- 13:37Speaker 1: the stroke, you had Monty Beisel come in, you had
- 13:39Speaker 1: Chad Brown come in kind of playing out of position,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, you went from two thousand
- 13:44Speaker 1: and four the strength of the team, all these linebackers
- 13:46Speaker 1: that you know can do everything to you know, now
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's it's been thinned out. You've got to teach new guys.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And clearly the drop off was you know, I mean,
- 13:54Speaker 1: poor Monty Beisel, I think he got he got around
- 13:56Speaker 1: that time pretty quick. Yeah. Um, you know, so that
- 13:59Speaker 1: that's what you're thinking about it. You know, is there
- 14:01Speaker 1: a world where they say let's give I mean, I
- 14:04Speaker 1: know everyone's been talking about this forever and it's it's
- 14:06Speaker 1: like you're kind of holding your breath waiting for it
- 14:07Speaker 1: to happen. But you know, do they say let's just
- 14:09Speaker 1: throw a win of itch in there? Do just oocha? Um?
- 14:12Speaker 1: You know, I know Paul said they liked terres Hall,
- 14:14Speaker 1: who missed the whole year with injury. But I mean,
- 14:15Speaker 1: is he a you know, a cost efficient replacement maybe
- 14:18Speaker 1: as a as a rotational guy who at least has
- 14:20Speaker 1: been here, and it's not let's go out and get
- 14:22Speaker 1: a free agent linebacker who's affordable and hope you can
- 14:25Speaker 1: kind of pick up the system. I just it's so
- 14:27Speaker 1: important they are even to find out what was wrong
- 14:29Speaker 1: with herres Hall why he missed all year. I don't know.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I mean, we didn't see him, and we have not
- 14:34Speaker 1: literally seen him since the twenty twenty season. Guys Terry
- 14:37Speaker 1: Sels and are back in shorter time than it's been
- 14:40Speaker 1: since we last saw Torez Hall. You mentioned a lot
- 14:43Speaker 1: of guys who you know are on the roster but
- 14:46Speaker 1: didn't play for whatever reason. Dead wood, right, like kind
- 14:49Speaker 1: of dead wood and you and you hope that, okay,
- 14:52Speaker 1: maybe whatever that reason was last year, they can contribute,
- 14:55Speaker 1: you know, but you know, you listen to some of
- 14:58Speaker 1: Paul's shows and the social media, and there's a lot
- 15:02Speaker 1: of like panic, like you know, the Patriots chose to
- 15:06Speaker 1: like go for it this year rather than through a
- 15:09Speaker 1: total rebuild, and now they're further behind than ever, and
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's it's gonna be you know, two three years before
- 15:16Speaker 1: they can get back. And I'm not sure it's really
- 15:19Speaker 1: that bad, honestly, I really don't think it's that bad,
- 15:24Speaker 1: do you know? No, I don't. I mean, I think
- 15:26Speaker 1: it looks overwhelming. And again I think that defensive performance
- 15:30Speaker 1: is kind of coloring everything you look at right now.
- 15:34Speaker 1: But but no, I think you're right, and I mean
- 15:36Speaker 1: that's why. I just, I mean, I generally think that
- 15:38Speaker 1: that teams can be better than the some of their parts,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and this team was not better, but I think that
- 15:43Speaker 1: they can get back to that. But I just, I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 1: I have just questions of you know, how much did
- 15:48Speaker 1: this defensive unit buy in and what were the issues?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Were the issues? I mean, I don't think the issues
- 15:52Speaker 1: would have been McCardy high tower. You know that they
- 15:55Speaker 1: weren't able to I mean, certainly physically they're they're slowing down.
- 15:58Speaker 1: But I guess in a way you almost maybe wish
- 16:01Speaker 1: that they force your hand a little bit and retire
- 16:03Speaker 1: and then you don't actually have to like do we
- 16:06Speaker 1: how do we? How do we turn it over? But also,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you know, get some new guys in here, some new blood,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and you know it's just it's it's tough because you
- 16:13Speaker 1: you know, those guys know the system. They're the breaking
- 16:16Speaker 1: down the huddle, given the pregame speeches. I mean, regardless
- 16:19Speaker 1: of what they did on the field this year, they
- 16:20Speaker 1: were such important pieces of you know, what this team
- 16:23Speaker 1: has been fabric wise, and so it's just it's hard to,
- 16:26Speaker 1: you know, reconcile yourself to yeah, I don't want them
- 16:28Speaker 1: on the field, but man, it's really gonna hurt not
- 16:30Speaker 1: having that atmosphere and what those guys bring when they
- 16:33Speaker 1: walk into the building and the experience that they have.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I I'm looking at I'm looking at three. If the Patriots,
- 16:39Speaker 1: through whether it's the draft, free agency, or some type
- 16:43Speaker 1: of trade, end up adding a linebacker, a cornerback, and
- 16:47Speaker 1: a wide receiver who contributes next year, I mean, that's
- 16:50Speaker 1: a lot. I think that addresses, you know, a lot
- 16:54Speaker 1: of the issues that we're seeing. Well, it depends on
- 16:58Speaker 1: what they're giving up in these trades. Like I know,
- 17:01Speaker 1: but I'm you know, like, let's just say one guy
- 17:03Speaker 1: comes through the draft, one guy comes through free agency. Okay, yeah,
- 17:07Speaker 1: all right, yeah yeah, spread it around. You're saying, yeah, yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you can, you can make it happen. I mean, I
- 17:12Speaker 1: think just look at you know, last year's draft class.
- 17:14Speaker 1: They got three guys who you know, two of them
- 17:17Speaker 1: stepped in Week one. It's great. I'm very happy with
- 17:19Speaker 1: a third one. You know, maybe not didn't really get
- 17:21Speaker 1: going until the second month for for for certain reasons.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But if you could get that again in the draft,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and you know, get three players, especially on the defensive
- 17:28Speaker 1: side of the boat, or you know, a tackle like
- 17:30Speaker 1: a like a like a Nate Soldier twenty eleven, Like
- 17:33Speaker 1: he's not gonna have to step right in and start,
- 17:35Speaker 1: but you've got somebody there long term now that can
- 17:38Speaker 1: potentially replace win the following season. Or you know the
- 17:42Speaker 1: question obviously with Trent Brown and if he comes back
- 17:44Speaker 1: and what on one us role is going forward? You know,
- 17:47Speaker 1: so I think that's a piece. But and the third
- 17:49Speaker 1: down back, I think that's a draft role too, where
- 17:51Speaker 1: you know, maybe you get by Bolden again for a
- 17:53Speaker 1: little bit and you know, break break a young player
- 17:55Speaker 1: in I don't get ready. I'd also like to know
- 17:59Speaker 1: what happened to Jude on down the stretch. Yeah, absolutely,
- 18:03Speaker 1: because he was like he was like mid season we
- 18:06Speaker 1: were thinking like, oh, he's clearly you know, your best
- 18:08Speaker 1: defensive player and one of your you know, key playmakers,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden he just started to
- 18:13Speaker 1: disappear from from games. Yeah, and that's what happened. We
- 18:18Speaker 1: need to know that he was sad, because if he wasn't,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and now this is who he is. Yeah, that's a
- 18:23Speaker 1: huge hit. Yeah, were talking about hoping the defense. Now
- 18:26Speaker 1: you're really taking a step back if jude On isn't
- 18:30Speaker 1: the guy we saw, you know, through the first ten
- 18:33Speaker 1: games or so. Right, you know, you know what, I
- 18:34Speaker 1: think my philosophy has to be on jude On. I'm
- 18:36Speaker 1: just put my head in the sand and assume we
- 18:39Speaker 1: get back this summer. He's like red sleeves again. He's
- 18:41Speaker 1: back to like I just I'm gonna assume that that's
- 18:43Speaker 1: going to happen, That there was an injury, that there
- 18:46Speaker 1: was COVID leftovers or something that took him off pace. Um,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna give him another chance. I think he started
- 18:52Speaker 1: off well enough. But I'm not going to spend all
- 18:55Speaker 1: offseason wondering. You just can't, because what else Steve really have?
- 18:58Speaker 1: I just wish far more. I wish could eavesdrop on
- 19:01Speaker 1: the film sessions that the coaches are having and find
- 19:04Speaker 1: out what what happened with him. Yeah. Well, I thought
- 19:06Speaker 1: Bidar did a good job, you know, reading what he
- 19:08Speaker 1: wrote about the defense in his review of you know
- 19:11Speaker 1: of I mean, and he's been all over jude On
- 19:13Speaker 1: and you know, thought that he might have reduced playing
- 19:16Speaker 1: time against the Bills, which he did, and you know,
- 19:18Speaker 1: he wrote today some you know speculation of you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: injury or whatever it might be. Certainly it seems like
- 19:23Speaker 1: it was it was something. But I just think for
- 19:26Speaker 1: you know, for you to have that positive approach like
- 19:28Speaker 1: Fred just have, where it's like, I don't think it's
- 19:29Speaker 1: going to take that long. I feel like to truly
- 19:31Speaker 1: believe that, I have to, at least in my mind,
- 19:34Speaker 1: think that Matt Tew jude On is a solid plus
- 19:37Speaker 1: outside lineback. Maybe he's not defensive MVP all over the
- 19:41Speaker 1: quarterback every game, but at the very least solid edge
- 19:45Speaker 1: pass rush guy. He has to be that because if
- 19:47Speaker 1: he's not that, then they have nothing. I mean, they
- 19:50Speaker 1: got nobody on the outside long term. Especially, but remember
- 19:53Speaker 1: where we were at the beginning of last season. You know,
- 19:57Speaker 1: we didn't know if we had a quarterback, and we
- 20:00Speaker 1: were all saying, you know, if if we don't get
- 20:03Speaker 1: at least competent quarterback play, forget it. Well we get that.
- 20:07Speaker 1: So that's taken care of, you know, I think anyway,
- 20:11Speaker 1: in terms of you know, having a competent quarterback, that
- 20:14Speaker 1: position is taken care of. So that opens it up.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So now in the first round we can focus on
- 20:21Speaker 1: wherever we want. You know, we don't have to worry
- 20:23Speaker 1: about taking a quarterback in the first or second round.
- 20:26Speaker 1: We've got that taken care of. Its huge. Yeah, I
- 20:29Speaker 1: think that's that's that's something that you know, you know
- 20:33Speaker 1: that you can take it to twenty twenty two that
- 20:35Speaker 1: you didn't know if you had in twenty twenty one.
- 20:37Speaker 1: All right, yeah, you can take it into twenty two.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I think it's going to be imperative though, to see
- 20:43Speaker 1: how much of a jump Mac makes a year two,
- 20:47Speaker 1: because if we continue to see what we saw throughout
- 20:49Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, then clearly he's plateaued. And now you
- 20:52Speaker 1: have to start thinking longer term. Twenty three, twenty four,
- 20:57Speaker 1: all right, what do we do? Do we bring a
- 20:58Speaker 1: veteran in, do we draft an the young kid? Like
- 21:01Speaker 1: you know, this year coming up for Mac is going
- 21:05Speaker 1: to be even more important than this past year for
- 21:07Speaker 1: him because you give the rookie, you know, all all
- 21:11Speaker 1: the all the benefit of the doubt in his first year,
- 21:15Speaker 1: and I love the fact that he was able to
- 21:16Speaker 1: take every snap. I love the fact that he got
- 21:18Speaker 1: at least one playoff game under his belt. Wasn't a
- 21:21Speaker 1: great one, but at least he got in there. Now,
- 21:24Speaker 1: what can he do in year two? Can he take
- 21:26Speaker 1: more command of the offense? Can he improve on some
- 21:28Speaker 1: of those throws that we saw him have trouble with
- 21:30Speaker 1: this year? Like that, particularly those same routes and some
- 21:33Speaker 1: of those outpasses, Like can he improve on those kind
- 21:35Speaker 1: of things? And then I'll be, uh, you know, can
- 21:39Speaker 1: he lead the team from behind more often? You know?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Can you don't want to see them be in that position?
- 21:44Speaker 1: But like, can he operate the offense in such a
- 21:46Speaker 1: way that you'd feel comfortable if they got down by
- 21:49Speaker 1: two scores that he'd be able to bring You know,
- 21:50Speaker 1: it's funny like this will be the first year that
- 21:54Speaker 1: Mac will have the second year as the starting quarterback
- 21:57Speaker 1: since high school? Yeah right, I mean he's got an
- 22:01Speaker 1: Alabama catch his breath, and I mean I don't think
- 22:04Speaker 1: you can underestimate that, And I yeah, I agree with
- 22:06Speaker 1: with everything you said. Um, you know, I think what
- 22:09Speaker 1: just stands out to me too, though, is just how
- 22:12Speaker 1: resilient Mac was this year. I mean, he he took
- 22:14Speaker 1: he had some tough, tough shots early in the season. Yeah, um,
- 22:18Speaker 1: a lot of different examples throughout the year of just
- 22:21Speaker 1: getting his brains bashed a little bit and you know,
- 22:24Speaker 1: having to stay in there and and have that toughness.
- 22:26Speaker 1: So I just I hope that that translates into just
- 22:30Speaker 1: a little bit more. And I don't know really what
- 22:32Speaker 1: the word I'm looking for here, because I don't want
- 22:33Speaker 1: to say like just some a calm, cool demeanor of
- 22:36Speaker 1: a starting NFL quarterback. But there's just something you know
- 22:40Speaker 1: in year two where you see it a little bit.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I mean, I Burrows kind of always had it, and
- 22:44Speaker 1: he's probably you know, he's smoking cigars, and you know,
- 22:46Speaker 1: he's always kind of had that swag a little bit
- 22:48Speaker 1: um And I know that that's like a stupid, kind
- 22:50Speaker 1: of like nebulous term of like he got swagged. But
- 22:53Speaker 1: I just want to see that confidence in Mac of like,
- 22:55Speaker 1: you know, you're you're the established starting quarterback, You've got
- 22:57Speaker 1: a year under your belt, we're gonna we're gonna try
- 23:00Speaker 1: to get this team around you. We're gonna try to
- 23:02Speaker 1: build your strengths, and you know, just have that confidence
- 23:05Speaker 1: that you know, people believe in you. And I mean
- 23:07Speaker 1: he certainly has the toughness, but I just think there's
- 23:09Speaker 1: a level of confidence he needs to take over. Think
- 23:12Speaker 1: about this training camp in offseason. But you know, the
- 23:15Speaker 1: stuff that we get to see, the mini camp training,
- 23:18Speaker 1: it's gonna look so different because there's not gonna be
- 23:20Speaker 1: Cam Newton. Yeah right, yet the words out of my mouth,
- 23:22Speaker 1: it's a great point. Right, he comes in, he's the guy, yep,
- 23:26Speaker 1: right from the start, and I think that's gonna help. Yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 1: And every and everything that we watched too was always
- 23:31Speaker 1: how to Cam do? How to you know, what, how
- 23:33Speaker 1: to Mac do for a rookie? Well that look good
- 23:34Speaker 1: for a you know, it's like next year, you're right,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I mean because even going back two years, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 1: going into that first year with Cam, like he didn't
- 23:42Speaker 1: really know and you know, now it's you know who
- 23:44Speaker 1: the guy is. You know, the reps he's gonna get.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I assume they'll be joint practices again, so I mean,
- 23:49Speaker 1: he'll get We're also excited about what he got against
- 23:51Speaker 1: the Giants when when Cam was out. Now we should
- 23:53Speaker 1: get that in all of the joint pack. You know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: he should get the majority of the work and all
- 23:57Speaker 1: of that which should only help him, you know, continue
- 24:00Speaker 1: to prepare. But I just I think there's no question
- 24:02Speaker 1: he has to improve, and they've got to continue to
- 24:05Speaker 1: put pieces around him to play to his strengths and
- 24:08Speaker 1: and take the offense to a level where they can
- 24:10Speaker 1: compete with the teams that are playing this weekend. You
- 24:11Speaker 1: know what I'm also going to be curious to see
- 24:14Speaker 1: is do they add a quarterback, a veteran quarterback, you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: like just like is Hoyer going to come back again?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Or if he retires, do they bring another veteran in
- 24:24Speaker 1: Stidham play the understudy role? How confident do they feel
- 24:27Speaker 1: in mac will Be? I think um an indication of
- 24:32Speaker 1: what they do in the quarterback market. Yeah, as as
- 24:34Speaker 1: a you know, the backup quarterback market. What do they
- 24:36Speaker 1: do at the backup position? In O two with like,
- 24:39Speaker 1: did I'm forgetting after Brady took the job, they traded
- 24:42Speaker 1: Bledsoe because I know they had was it John Freeze?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Was that the am I mixing up my former seat?
- 24:49Speaker 1: They had they had Rohan Davis, They had Rohan davian
- 24:51Speaker 1: O too, so they just went for it. After after
- 24:54Speaker 1: they just said Brady you're our guy. Yeah, so, but
- 24:57Speaker 1: Stidham in your four whatever it is, I mean that
- 25:00Speaker 1: that would seems but I don't know. I always see
- 25:02Speaker 1: some value in in Brian Hoyer and just the presence
- 25:05Speaker 1: he provides. So, I mean, he seems kind of like
- 25:07Speaker 1: a coach. But I guess it's a good question. I mean,
- 25:10Speaker 1: I think it will be indicative of is he kind
- 25:12Speaker 1: of ready to tackle this on his own or does
- 25:14Speaker 1: is it beneficial for him to just have this experienced
- 25:17Speaker 1: sounding board with him all the time. Yeah, And you
- 25:21Speaker 1: know you speak about you know, coaching and all that.
- 25:24Speaker 1: From what I've heard, there has been no outreach for
- 25:28Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel year. Uh. You know, we've heard about Gerard
- 25:31Speaker 1: Mayo and Ziegler and Wolf and others, but there has
- 25:37Speaker 1: not from what i've you know, been able to gather,
- 25:41Speaker 1: no team has reached out for Josh mcdan, which selfishly good. Yeah, sure, glad.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Does that'll help mac? Yeah? I mean the NFL dot
- 25:50Speaker 1: com has a good uh coaching slash GM tracker where
- 25:54Speaker 1: they've got all They've got the list of everybody who's
- 25:56Speaker 1: been fired, retired, and every buddy who's either had an
- 26:01Speaker 1: interview or has interview scheduled for any of the openings
- 26:04Speaker 1: around the league, and there is not one Josh McDaniel's
- 26:08Speaker 1: reference on any of those. You're right right, all right,
- 26:10Speaker 1: It's a Thursday and Patriots Unfiltered. I'm broadcasting from the office,
- 26:14Speaker 1: so I know it sounds like I'm with Paul uh
- 26:17Speaker 1: in Fred's gunn Spelunking eight five five pass five hundred
- 26:26Speaker 1: web radio at Patriots dot com. Eric, you're in charge
- 26:29Speaker 1: of the bones today. That's right. You want to take something,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you want to start. Yeah, the comrades is stacked, as
- 26:34Speaker 1: they say, Okay, so we'll start with our buddy Todd
- 26:37Speaker 1: and North Carolina, Matt Todd in North Carolinia. There, there
- 26:42Speaker 1: you go. You were who the Pew crew said they were.
- 26:45Speaker 1: You guys said that they're a good, not a great
- 26:48Speaker 1: team with good coaching that can get them past some stuff,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and in the long run, the coaching just kind of
- 26:53Speaker 1: let us down a little bit. But I'm kind of
- 26:56Speaker 1: excited to think of that. You know, there's gonna be
- 26:58Speaker 1: a lot of new blood and new chances, and we
- 27:00Speaker 1: can see what Bill can do with a whole bunch
- 27:03Speaker 1: of a use movement. Because I think they're going to
- 27:05Speaker 1: have to do it. I don't think there's any choice
- 27:07Speaker 1: but to start a little bit over again, to take
- 27:09Speaker 1: a little bit maybe a step further back, like Christians,
- 27:11Speaker 1: that this is not a one or two year Christian
- 27:14Speaker 1: with a ti n Yeah, the original he said, yeah, exactly,
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's not a one year process. And if we get
- 27:21Speaker 1: caught up in it. It was just really kind of
- 27:23Speaker 1: devastating to see them just come out so flat. Yeah,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and no, Todd that, I mean, it's an important point
- 27:31Speaker 1: that this isn't a one year process. Rebuilds are almost
- 27:37Speaker 1: never a one year process. Yes, we've seen teams go
- 27:39Speaker 1: from like worse than their division to first, or teams
- 27:43Speaker 1: with losing records make the playoffs and make a little
- 27:45Speaker 1: bit of a run. But that's generally with teams that
- 27:48Speaker 1: at least have a core there that they trusted. They've
- 27:52Speaker 1: maybe had a bad season for whatever reason, and then
- 27:54Speaker 1: they've turned things around quickly, added a free agent, drafted somebody, whatever.
- 27:57Speaker 1: But when you're going through what this team is going through,
- 28:00Speaker 1: you lost the greatest quarterback of all time, that that
- 28:03Speaker 1: you had a year or two with that. Now you're rebuilding,
- 28:07Speaker 1: you have a defense that's getting older, you're clearly having
- 28:09Speaker 1: to Uh, you know, you've had some coaches leaving over
- 28:13Speaker 1: the past couple of years. You're starting a new as
- 28:17Speaker 1: Fred called it the other day, it's a new chapter
- 28:20Speaker 1: in the franchise's history and it could take it could
- 28:23Speaker 1: take more than a few years. Well, you gotta be
- 28:26Speaker 1: patient with this, Yeah, I mean, I just look at it,
- 28:27Speaker 1: at least from from max contract perspective, because this rookie
- 28:30Speaker 1: quarterback to right, you're in the sweet spot during this
- 28:33Speaker 1: period of time four or five years that you don't
- 28:36Speaker 1: have to pay, you know, an exorbitant price for the
- 28:38Speaker 1: for a quarterback, which I think they have to take
- 28:40Speaker 1: advantage of it. And I think, you know, to some extent,
- 28:42Speaker 1: I think this year will be a little bit of
- 28:43Speaker 1: a course correction with some of the free agents. Maybe
- 28:46Speaker 1: they didn't work out, So I mean, I think Aggalore
- 28:48Speaker 1: will be back. But you know, it's only a two
- 28:50Speaker 1: year deal, so you know, I think that you'll have
- 28:52Speaker 1: a little bit of things evening out a little bit
- 28:54Speaker 1: this year and then probably the following year that's when
- 28:56Speaker 1: you go again on free agency a little bit and
- 28:58Speaker 1: try to get those pieces. But you know, I think
- 29:00Speaker 1: it's a five year plan. Thanks Todd for the call.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I'd like to ask everyone a question. Throw this out
- 29:05Speaker 1: for everyone, because I was thinking about it today because
- 29:07Speaker 1: again on you know, Paul's shows. I was listening on
- 29:09Speaker 1: the way he's got so many shows it's hard to
- 29:11Speaker 1: keep training. They shouldn't have done what they did. They
- 29:13Speaker 1: should have totally rebuilt. They should have you know, used
- 29:16Speaker 1: last year as a rebuild here. And the question I
- 29:19Speaker 1: want to ask is what would that have look like
- 29:22Speaker 1: to people as opposed to what we saw? What would
- 29:25Speaker 1: a rebuild year look like? Losing losing record most likely?
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't know, always saw it. I mean, I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 1: how different can it be? Like? Right? But I know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: but like, what what would the personnel moves have been
- 29:38Speaker 1: in a rebuild here? You know, letting go of aquarter
- 29:42Speaker 1: like yeah, let going out and trying to get Kyle
- 29:45Speaker 1: van Noi again, right, Like opening up space with the
- 29:49Speaker 1: late veterans they got on, Yeah, playing more of your
- 29:52Speaker 1: younger players and giving them more of an important role
- 29:55Speaker 1: in seeing what they can do. I mean, the offense
- 29:57Speaker 1: looks so new. I mean, I don't know how far
- 29:59Speaker 1: that could be from the blow up that we're talking about.
- 30:02Speaker 1: The offense essentially was blown up. Yeah, more defensively, you know,
- 30:05Speaker 1: but I think it was more defensive and just bringing
- 30:07Speaker 1: those veterans back. And as I said, I mean earlier
- 30:09Speaker 1: this week, I don't really fault them for trying it.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I don't think they had a lot of options. And
- 30:13Speaker 1: I don't think that it would have been like we
- 30:16Speaker 1: would have been in a great position if you had
- 30:17Speaker 1: gone all year, you know, playing the guys that they have.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, what I've read between the
- 30:22Speaker 1: lines is that they don't really believe those guys are
- 30:24Speaker 1: the guys and so had they played them, it probably
- 30:27Speaker 1: would have been much worse. And I think people are
- 30:29Speaker 1: assuming that if you just played those guys last year,
- 30:31Speaker 1: that that that means next year they'll be good like well,
- 30:33Speaker 1: but I think that that brings up the point of
- 30:36Speaker 1: did they think they had a chance so to win
- 30:39Speaker 1: or to make a playoff push? Is that why they
- 30:41Speaker 1: kept those older guys, and that because they trusted them more.
- 30:44Speaker 1: If they didn't have have that that confidence, maybe they
- 30:47Speaker 1: would have gone with these younger guys. We can guarantee
- 30:49Speaker 1: you if if we go back to the beginning of
- 30:52Speaker 1: twenty twenty one offseason and the Patriots are in the
- 30:55Speaker 1: same cap position. Other teams are in the same cap
- 30:58Speaker 1: l we would be and they didn't do what they did,
- 31:01Speaker 1: we'd be screaming at them. Why didn't you take advantage
- 31:04Speaker 1: of all that opportunity? Yeah, you know, I don't see.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I think my point is, I'm not sure that what
- 31:10Speaker 1: they did in twenty twenty one is going to slow
- 31:13Speaker 1: down this rebuild process. I don't think it is. I
- 31:16Speaker 1: think I think, you know, they could have been six
- 31:19Speaker 1: and eleven, and you know, twenty twenty two might have
- 31:23Speaker 1: looked the same as it will anyway. You know, I'm
- 31:26Speaker 1: not sure it really slowed us down at all. I
- 31:28Speaker 1: really don't. I just like to hear from from these
- 31:30Speaker 1: people on Paul's station of what what what would have
- 31:34Speaker 1: constituted it? Because I mean, you really kind of went
- 31:37Speaker 1: out and bought a whole new team for you know,
- 31:38Speaker 1: the significant players, right, I mean, if you want to
- 31:41Speaker 1: talk about, hey, they shouldn't have brought a handful of
- 31:43Speaker 1: veterans back. Sure, but this was such a different team
- 31:46Speaker 1: than last year, from two years ago. This was a
- 31:49Speaker 1: whole new offense with a rookie quarterback and four out
- 31:52Speaker 1: of you know, new weapons, and so I don't know
- 31:55Speaker 1: I just I guess I disagree with the premise that
- 31:58Speaker 1: I think. I think they did about as much as
- 32:00Speaker 1: they could. And you know, it's never gonna be we're
- 32:02Speaker 1: gonna cut off fifty three guys and start over like
- 32:05Speaker 1: so and there. And there are CBA rules where you
- 32:08Speaker 1: have to spend up to a certain portion of the caps,
- 32:10Speaker 1: so like you can't just hold down to that money,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you know if you're yeah, I don't. I don't know
- 32:15Speaker 1: what we were last year, one hundred million over the
- 32:18Speaker 1: cap or something like that, and the cap was only
- 32:20Speaker 1: one eighty something. That you can't hold on to that money.
- 32:23Speaker 1: You have to spend it. Yeah, there's a certain percentage
- 32:26Speaker 1: you have to spend each year cash wise. Yeah, and
- 32:28Speaker 1: even if you'll hold back and let's say you only
- 32:30Speaker 1: spend eighty I think every four years, you have to
- 32:34Speaker 1: like spend it all or you know, Yeah, there's certain rules.
- 32:37Speaker 1: You're right, You're right, Yeah, I don't know about the
- 32:39Speaker 1: specific numbers. Like it's not like the pages could have
- 32:42Speaker 1: saved that money for this year, you know. Yeah. Well,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and I just I think part of this, it's all
- 32:47Speaker 1: connected to what we said about, you know, why why
- 32:50Speaker 1: Brady ended up leaving was, you know, just the misses
- 32:52Speaker 1: on the draft, the inability basically to replace Gronk and
- 32:56Speaker 1: to replace Edelman and to keep that pipeline of players
- 32:59Speaker 1: and weapons going for him. And I think what we're
- 33:01Speaker 1: seeing now a little bit behind the curve is the
- 33:03Speaker 1: same thing on the defensive side of the ball, where
- 33:06Speaker 1: you know guys like Uch and Winovich that are you know,
- 33:08Speaker 1: high round draft picks, athletic guys. You know on paper,
- 33:12Speaker 1: when you're drafting those guys, we're all excited because it
- 33:15Speaker 1: says this is what they need. They need to get
- 33:17Speaker 1: more athletic on the second level, they need, you know,
- 33:19Speaker 1: and regardless of what you need more of or anything
- 33:21Speaker 1: like that, you just need new guys. These guys are
- 33:23Speaker 1: coming to the end. You had to fill that pipeline.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And I think that's the reality now that's coming home,
- 33:28Speaker 1: is that defensively, you don't really know what they have
- 33:31Speaker 1: in the pipeline at the linebacker level. Despite continued attention
- 33:35Speaker 1: to that those positions, those guys couldn't get on the field.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Like I said, does that mean that they're just deadwood
- 33:40Speaker 1: and third down guys and they're never going to be
- 33:41Speaker 1: more than that? I don't know, but I hesitate to
- 33:45Speaker 1: think if you just didn't bring back Van Noyon Collins
- 33:48Speaker 1: and let high Tower walk and just played Ucha and
- 33:50Speaker 1: Winovich all year, that somehow you're in a better position now,
- 33:54Speaker 1: you know. I guess maybe your draft positions higher. But
- 33:57Speaker 1: I think the results on the field would wouldn't have
- 33:59Speaker 1: been as good, and I don't think it would have
- 34:00Speaker 1: been as beneficial for Mac to you know, especially in
- 34:02Speaker 1: that win streak where the defense was helping him, picking
- 34:05Speaker 1: him up. And you know, for as bad as it ended,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I think the defense still did some good things for
- 34:09Speaker 1: Mac Jones this year in his development and you know,
- 34:11Speaker 1: keeping him in games or at least giving him the
- 34:14Speaker 1: opportunity at the end of all these games too. By
- 34:16Speaker 1: the way, you no compete. Speaking of Mac, did you
- 34:18Speaker 1: see he posted something on I don't know, I think
- 34:21Speaker 1: it might have been Instagram whatever about how you know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: he just basically just giving thanks for what a you know,
- 34:28Speaker 1: great season he had. Not a great season he had,
- 34:31Speaker 1: but just like he enjoyed the season. It was a
- 34:34Speaker 1: you know, yeah, the experience of the season, and he's
- 34:36Speaker 1: looking forward to the offseason and building towards year two.
- 34:39Speaker 1: So that that's that was just something that I just
- 34:43Speaker 1: thought was I mean it's not a significant, uh thing,
- 34:47Speaker 1: and not unexpected in this day and age with people
- 34:49Speaker 1: post stuff like that, but just it was nice to see, Yes, yeah,
- 34:52Speaker 1: I put it. I actually put a post up on
- 34:53Speaker 1: the site with not only that, but you know a
- 34:55Speaker 1: lot of his teammates were responding to that as well.
- 34:57Speaker 1: And you know, I think the feeling coming out of
- 35:00Speaker 1: of this season was at the very least that all
- 35:02Speaker 1: these guys really have a lot of respect for Mac
- 35:05Speaker 1: and and really enjoyed playing with him. Hunter Henry talked about,
- 35:08Speaker 1: you know, you really didn't get much chance to work
- 35:10Speaker 1: with him. I mean these West Coast camps were you
- 35:12Speaker 1: know early on that was Sam and you know it's
- 35:16Speaker 1: it's it's I remember those videos. So it'll be an
- 35:19Speaker 1: opportunity for him to, you know, continue to grow. But
- 35:21Speaker 1: I think that you know, we can tell there's plenty
- 35:24Speaker 1: of naysayers out there that will tell you what Matt
- 35:26Speaker 1: can't do, but I think you do have to be
- 35:28Speaker 1: aware of the toughness, the poise, the experience he got
- 35:32Speaker 1: this year. I mean, it's just it's no small task
- 35:34Speaker 1: to come in and play quarterback here and win the
- 35:37Speaker 1: job and and that, and that deserves a lot of respect.
- 35:40Speaker 1: He's got some shortcomings, but I think, you know, all
- 35:42Speaker 1: quarterbacks to stuff to overcome. I'm excited to watch him try, though.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I know he'll put everything he's got into it. I
- 35:48Speaker 1: know there's you know, a lot of elements to arm strength,
- 35:51Speaker 1: but confidence is part of it too. You know. I
- 35:54Speaker 1: think some of the time where we saw balls that
- 35:57Speaker 1: boy that took a long time to get a lot
- 35:59Speaker 1: of that was it and see um and I think that,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you know, year two might help a little bit in
- 36:04Speaker 1: that department. Now, yeah, he's never gonna be Josh Allen,
- 36:07Speaker 1: He's never gonna have you know, a whore Witzer. Confidence
- 36:15Speaker 1: will help u in the speed of the ball, in
- 36:19Speaker 1: the velocity, I hope. So yeah, anticipation and I mean
- 36:22Speaker 1: I think he's got enough. I think he's got enough,
- 36:24Speaker 1: But I do you know, I do just feel like
- 36:27Speaker 1: I never there weren't many times this season where you
- 36:29Speaker 1: felt like the Patriots offense is rolling and they just
- 36:33Speaker 1: they're clicking it's all. I mean maybe Cleveland you had
- 36:35Speaker 1: it for a little while on that Cleveland game, but
- 36:37Speaker 1: you know, you just you need more of that against
- 36:39Speaker 1: good teams. You need to be able to at least
- 36:41Speaker 1: put together a couple drives against good teams where all, right,
- 36:44Speaker 1: there you go, that's that's what you gotta do. And
- 36:46Speaker 1: I mean all the good teams that are gonna play
- 36:47Speaker 1: this weekend, they're all capable of doing that with you know,
- 36:50Speaker 1: whether it's a I think Dante Scarniki had kind of
- 36:53Speaker 1: he nailed it. You know, he does need that binkie. Yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 1: he does need that guy who can get open. Yeah.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Brady's always had all the great ones, always had, you know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: all the great ones. Yeah, So if the great ones needed,
- 37:09Speaker 1: then the competent ones needed too. And maybe Hunter Henry
- 37:12Speaker 1: is one of those guys, but maybe he needs maybe
- 37:14Speaker 1: he needs more than that. Yeah, I mean, and I
- 37:16Speaker 1: think it's I'm not sure if Henry is fast enough,
- 37:18Speaker 1: but you know whatever, but I think it's worth pointing
- 37:21Speaker 1: out too, uh, you know. And I agree. But I
- 37:23Speaker 1: also think that Matt you know, raised the level of
- 37:25Speaker 1: play this year for you know, Jacobe Meyer's career year. Yeah,
- 37:28Speaker 1: what's his face? Kendrick Bourne, Like, yeah, Kendrick Bourne came
- 37:31Speaker 1: in career year. You know, it's some real things to
- 37:33Speaker 1: build off of. So, I mean, we've seen plenty of
- 37:35Speaker 1: guys come into this offense and not do what Kendrick
- 37:37Speaker 1: Bourne did this year, so it's reason for optimism. But
- 37:40Speaker 1: I agree, I think just some kind of electric athleticism
- 37:44Speaker 1: on the inside of the formation that can be moved around.
- 37:48Speaker 1: You know that I don't really care about the Nelson
- 37:51Speaker 1: agaloor X receiver who runs three different routes. I mean,
- 37:54Speaker 1: I know a lot of people are obsessed with, you know,
- 37:56Speaker 1: getting that outside guy, and certainly if you're lucky enough
- 37:59Speaker 1: to get one of the four or five guys in
- 38:00Speaker 1: the league at any given time that happened to be
- 38:02Speaker 1: transcendental players at that position, create but just get him
- 38:05Speaker 1: a guy that he can get the ball every single game.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I mean, just I mean, we're looking at Jamar Chase
- 38:09Speaker 1: right now making catch after catch after catch last weekend.
- 38:12Speaker 1: That that's that's the formula. It's not tough. I mean,
- 38:15Speaker 1: it's tough to find, but it's it's it's obvious what
- 38:17Speaker 1: it is. But it's like, you know, you get into
- 38:20Speaker 1: these games and you're watching them on TV and it's
- 38:22Speaker 1: like Jamar Chase makes those catches or you know, and
- 38:25Speaker 1: you say, he's why aren't they just covering this guy
- 38:28Speaker 1: because you can right, they're that good, right, if he
- 38:31Speaker 1: was that easy, they'd be doing it now. On the
- 38:33Speaker 1: on the flip side, you get into the second game
- 38:36Speaker 1: against the Bills and the no guy, a no name
- 38:38Speaker 1: like Mackenzie's making path and you're saying, why aren't they covering?
- 38:43Speaker 1: The Patriots can't because they just they're two. They don't
- 38:47Speaker 1: have the depth and coverage to do that. You know, yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 1: I think they're I mean, And and he was even
- 38:54Speaker 1: productive in the in the third game too, so like
- 38:58Speaker 1: like who was out there for the Dangelo and Busby
- 39:03Speaker 1: and I practice squatters? It was? It was awful? Was it? Bet?
- 39:07Speaker 1: Anymore calls that? Do you want me to go to emails? Yeah?
- 39:10Speaker 1: We have some calls, but having some technicalities right now
- 39:13Speaker 1: with that, so why don't we do some emails first? Okay? Well,
- 39:16Speaker 1: Bobby from squandam rights. In playing the Bills three times
- 39:20Speaker 1: this season, I definitely gained a new respect for Josh Allen.
- 39:23Speaker 1: He's got a great arm and can take off with
- 39:25Speaker 1: the ball at any moment. But I think it's his
- 39:27Speaker 1: size that makes him so unique. He looks like the
- 39:30Speaker 1: big cousin in the Thanksgiving backyard football Game He's just
- 39:34Speaker 1: so unaffected by tacklers, and even when we get a
- 39:36Speaker 1: good hit on him, he pops right back up. You
- 39:39Speaker 1: guys talked about how other AFCAST teams had to build
- 39:42Speaker 1: around beating Brady, and now we've got to build around
- 39:45Speaker 1: beating Josh. Question is what does that mean? What positions
- 39:49Speaker 1: and types of players would you focus on if your
- 39:52Speaker 1: goal was solely to beat this version of the Bill's offense.
- 39:55Speaker 1: It's a good question. I would start with speed, that
- 39:59Speaker 1: athlet speed and athleticism to keep up with all of
- 40:02Speaker 1: the weapons that they have. I mean, no different than
- 40:04Speaker 1: when the Patriots had, you know, the two thousand and
- 40:06Speaker 1: seven offense, or different varieties of Gronk and Edelman and
- 40:10Speaker 1: you know James White, guys who could you know they
- 40:13Speaker 1: could attack you from anywhere. They need more athletic, faster defenders.
- 40:19Speaker 1: They can't be stuck in this rut of traditional you know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: big bulky middle linebackers and defeating defensive lineman. They need
- 40:27Speaker 1: guys who can move from side to side, who can cover. Yeah,
- 40:32Speaker 1: speed combined with good tackling technique, yea swarm to the ball.
- 40:36Speaker 1: So so let's just say your cornerback is the guy
- 40:39Speaker 1: you know, on an island with Josh Allen at least
- 40:42Speaker 1: he can grab an ankle and by the time he
- 40:44Speaker 1: does that, two or three other defenders are there to
- 40:47Speaker 1: help bring them down. It's it's speed, swarm tackling and
- 40:51Speaker 1: you know, good tackling technique. Yeah, I mean it's I
- 40:55Speaker 1: do think that the matchups are a big part of
- 40:57Speaker 1: it in the secondary and having the horses. You know,
- 41:00Speaker 1: put a guy on Digs and you put a guy
- 41:02Speaker 1: on Beasley and Sanders or whoever else that they'll resign
- 41:05Speaker 1: next year. But um, it's it's just tough. I think
- 41:08Speaker 1: a lot of the a lot of it. You can't
- 41:10Speaker 1: really game plan because he's just so good. Um, you
- 41:13Speaker 1: have to just build a good defense. You know, you
- 41:15Speaker 1: have to build a good defense, uh that can that
- 41:17Speaker 1: you have depth in the secondary to match up with
- 41:19Speaker 1: his weapons. Uh, And that you have a disruptive front
- 41:22Speaker 1: that can you know, get after him and get him uncomfortable.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Right that he was that he was never in any
- 41:28Speaker 1: jeopardy in this these last couple of games against the Patriots,
- 41:31Speaker 1: like the Jude On that we saw earlier in the season,
- 41:35Speaker 1: needs to show up for these games and make life
- 41:38Speaker 1: difficult for Josh Allen. I mean, he can't just you
- 41:41Speaker 1: can't just let him sit back there or even just
- 41:44Speaker 1: dance around a little bit. And by time that touchdown
- 41:46Speaker 1: to the first touchdown of the second touchdown to Dawson Knox,
- 41:50Speaker 1: he had ten seconds I think to throw. It was
- 41:52Speaker 1: like the longest period of time for a touchdown throw
- 41:55Speaker 1: in the league this year. Like how a drink? I mean,
- 41:57Speaker 1: you can't let him do that. I'll be really interested
- 42:00Speaker 1: to see going forward how the Bills do in the playoffs,
- 42:03Speaker 1: Like how do other defenses hope with? Yeah, yeah, well
- 42:07Speaker 1: this weekend, I mean, this weekend's gonna be give because
- 42:09Speaker 1: they've already going to Ksey this year and beating them
- 42:11Speaker 1: by I think it was double digits, right, significant, I mean,
- 42:14Speaker 1: and that you know interesting, that was when I mean
- 42:16Speaker 1: we talk about during picks. I don't want to tip
- 42:18Speaker 1: tip my hand here, um, but a great game. And
- 42:20Speaker 1: I mean, look, that's they're the team who's representing the
- 42:22Speaker 1: AFC the last two times. And you know, my thing
- 42:24Speaker 1: with Josh Allen and the emailer was right. I mean,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I have, you know, so much respect for him. It's
- 42:29Speaker 1: just continued to grow watching him over the last few years.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And you know, just my only question is does he
- 42:34Speaker 1: have three more of the games than him that he
- 42:36Speaker 1: just played. Maybe he does, and maybe the Bills will
- 42:38Speaker 1: win the Super Bowl. But I just think that they
- 42:41Speaker 1: seem like a team that is just so focused on him,
- 42:44Speaker 1: and it almost kind of is a version of the
- 42:46Speaker 1: Derrick Henry of it all. We've had that conversation before
- 42:48Speaker 1: where it's like, you build your whole team around d
- 42:50Speaker 1: Of course you want to build your whole team around
- 42:52Speaker 1: around the quarterback, but I just wonder what's it gonna
- 42:55Speaker 1: look like if he doesn't like he's just a little
- 42:57Speaker 1: off in the playoffs against the best teams, and we
- 43:00Speaker 1: know that they have flaws, and when you know he
- 43:01Speaker 1: didn't play great against everybody, that's what's hard for Patriot fans.
- 43:04Speaker 1: We're just used to seeing this guy be unstoppable all
- 43:06Speaker 1: the time. Meanwhile, you could go to the Jets and
- 43:08Speaker 1: they'd be like, man, he's all right, you know, like
- 43:10Speaker 1: you didn't really play that great against them. So it's, uh,
- 43:12Speaker 1: we're in a bit of a unique position. But I
- 43:14Speaker 1: agree with Fred. I'm excited to see how how he
- 43:17Speaker 1: does and if they're able to continue this street because
- 43:19Speaker 1: I think if they keep playing like they play obviously,
- 43:21Speaker 1: I mean it's gonna stop them. Yeah, I mean they
- 43:23Speaker 1: were my preseason pick to win the Super Bowl. I
- 43:25Speaker 1: had Bills over Packers and the pick, so that's still
- 43:29Speaker 1: in play. But like they they have a huge task
- 43:33Speaker 1: in Kansas City because I think Kansas City's playing the
- 43:36Speaker 1: way I expected them to play most of the season, right,
- 43:39Speaker 1: and they're in Kansas City at the right time. Yeah, Yeah,
- 43:41Speaker 1: So I think that's gonna be a much better game.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Kansas City's gonna chounter punch. Kansas City's gonna have something
- 43:48Speaker 1: with Kelsey and Hill, and you know, they're gonna be
- 43:50Speaker 1: able to stretch the field a little bit. And you know,
- 43:52Speaker 1: even if the Bills get a little bit of a
- 43:54Speaker 1: lead or go out ahead, I mean, it's it's it's
- 43:56Speaker 1: Kansas City. But I think it's that's that's yeah, that's
- 44:00Speaker 1: my most anticipated one of them. We gotta wait till
- 44:02Speaker 1: Sunday night for that one, waiting all day. Yeah, And
- 44:05Speaker 1: it's you know, weird, Like I never thought I'd say this,
- 44:08Speaker 1: but like I'm kind of rooting for an AFC East
- 44:12Speaker 1: rival to win that game, you know what I mean.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Like usually you know, you don't want, but I hate
- 44:18Speaker 1: Kansas City so much I'm gonna be rooting for the
- 44:22Speaker 1: Bills to win that. Yeah, I think I am too.
- 44:24Speaker 1: It's it's I think once you get past the pasting
- 44:28Speaker 1: that we took, all the people that seemed to pop
- 44:30Speaker 1: up in my social media and seem to think that
- 44:32Speaker 1: I care that that they're trolling me that the Patriots lost. Um,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the dealing with that stuff a little annoying with the
- 44:37Speaker 1: Buffalo fans, But I think the block button is your friends.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Oh no, no, I'm afraid to I I it's it's
- 44:42Speaker 1: all taming, that's it. I don't know, but but I
- 44:48Speaker 1: I agree. Once you get by all that stuff, it's
- 44:51Speaker 1: like I got friends in the room for Buffalo. They're
- 44:52Speaker 1: they're a real good team. How can you not respect
- 44:55Speaker 1: them after what they did to our beloved Patriots team?
- 44:58Speaker 1: You know out here twice? So I I think I'm
- 45:01Speaker 1: with you. It's it's hard. Who's this guy from the
- 45:04Speaker 1: Bills that had the profanity lace thing to have to
- 45:06Speaker 1: say about the Patriots? Uh? You know the errors over
- 45:10Speaker 1: and was a whole bunch of other player Yeah, who
- 45:14Speaker 1: oh you didn't see glad I avoided it. Oh that
- 45:17Speaker 1: just came out yesterday. Uh yeah, wait, wait Sean Merriman.
- 45:21Speaker 1: It wasn't Sean Meryman. Something got mailed me today about
- 45:23Speaker 1: Sean Merriman, saying I got no, no, this is a
- 45:25Speaker 1: bill a guy on the team. Now, Oh I did
- 45:27Speaker 1: not see that. Oh yeah yeah, So that'll be locker
- 45:31Speaker 1: room material all next year. All right, Hey, Freddy, I
- 45:34Speaker 1: think we got our phone issues back. So, uh, if
- 45:37Speaker 1: you want to take a call before we we head out,
- 45:40Speaker 1: you can do that. Patty is an agawam cousin. Patty,
- 45:43Speaker 1: what's up? What's up? Guys? Hey Patty? So um, before
- 45:49Speaker 1: I get to the defense, like I said, I wouldn't say,
- 45:52Speaker 1: I just gotta stay him. I'm gonna miss MICA's return
- 45:55Speaker 1: from practice today. We're like Mike isn't going to practice.
- 46:00Speaker 1: No one was there, there's nothing to see. I wish
- 46:04Speaker 1: I could just go stay it outside for like ten minutes.
- 46:09Speaker 1: And I did want to submit a song, but I
- 46:11Speaker 1: mean there's nothing that could It's that. It's just perfect.
- 46:13Speaker 1: It's a perfect little single, you know, and it's great.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I can't wait for I can't wait for September for
- 46:18Speaker 1: the return might be it definitely, it's catchy. It's catchy.
- 46:24Speaker 1: They did a great job. So you know, you guys
- 46:28Speaker 1: covered a lot of stuff, um on defense and to me,
- 46:32Speaker 1: to me personally, UM, I just think we need a
- 46:38Speaker 1: big turnaround. I mean, mccordy's what thirty five or he's
- 46:41Speaker 1: going to be thirty five when the next season starts,
- 46:43Speaker 1: So maybe it's it's time to look at different options
- 46:46Speaker 1: and move on from those guys. And prior to this season,
- 46:50Speaker 1: what I said privately to like my group was because
- 46:53Speaker 1: everybody asked me football questions for some reason, was I
- 46:57Speaker 1: think what the roster turnover they had prior to this
- 47:00Speaker 1: season kind of like what they did in two thousand.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I said, the next few drafts twenty twenty one, twenty
- 47:06Speaker 1: twenty two, twenty twenty three is really going to define
- 47:09Speaker 1: this team. And you know what, they hit on a
- 47:11Speaker 1: stud with Starmore, and I think, you know they if
- 47:15Speaker 1: they're able to do that with two or three guys
- 47:18Speaker 1: in these next couple drafts, you know, hopefully they'll be
- 47:20Speaker 1: in a good position. But as far as like j
- 47:23Speaker 1: c U, I listened to Miguel kind of break down
- 47:26Speaker 1: what it would take to sign them, and they would
- 47:28Speaker 1: have to get real creative, including like cutting some key
- 47:31Speaker 1: players like Shack Mason, which I mean that I don't
- 47:34Speaker 1: want to see that happen. But if you look at
- 47:37Speaker 1: the who's available on the free agent market, it's like
- 47:39Speaker 1: a veritable who's who of great cornerbacks like five years ago.
- 47:43Speaker 1: So yeah, you might have to like get one of
- 47:46Speaker 1: those veteran guys and then you know, pair them with
- 47:49Speaker 1: a rookie. But I mean they would need more speed.
- 47:53Speaker 1: You know, they need to get a lot faster on defense,
- 47:56Speaker 1: because we saw it like the last four games of
- 47:59Speaker 1: the year year. That's why I didn't pick him to
- 48:01Speaker 1: win in Buffalo because I that small little window. It's like,
- 48:04Speaker 1: how can I pick this team to win a playoff
- 48:06Speaker 1: game when you know each team, each good team that
- 48:09Speaker 1: they went up against, you kind of knew what you
- 48:11Speaker 1: had to do to stop them, and you couldn't. You
- 48:13Speaker 1: couldn't even get Buffalo off the field in two games.
- 48:17Speaker 1: That's kind of where I'm telling I'll pick the Bills
- 48:22Speaker 1: this weekend. I'm picking Tombo of course, Green Bay And
- 48:27Speaker 1: who's the other team that's playing since you in Tennessee. Yeah,
- 48:31Speaker 1: I'll take Tennessee too. That's all I got, guys, All Right,
- 48:34Speaker 1: thanks Patty. Yeah, we're gonna do our picks later on
- 48:37Speaker 1: the show. Don't forget that's right. I only got four
- 48:39Speaker 1: of them though today for we don't have to hurry
- 48:41Speaker 1: as much, yea, Paul. Paul was kind enough to give
- 48:43Speaker 1: me the results so I can. I can share those
- 48:45Speaker 1: as well when we get to it. But uh, I
- 48:47Speaker 1: just a point to make though and circle around a
- 48:50Speaker 1: little bit. With the free agency stuff. It's I just again,
- 48:53Speaker 1: I love last year with the free agency they got.
- 48:55Speaker 1: It was all guys like twenty six twenty seven, just
- 48:58Speaker 1: finished their first deal, prime of a career, a lot
- 49:00Speaker 1: of good football left. I think if you look at
- 49:03Speaker 1: the five year window that you probably have with Mac,
- 49:06Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to go out and you know,
- 49:08Speaker 1: and that's why I don't. I don't want to overspend
- 49:10Speaker 1: on old free agents who aren't going to be here
- 49:12Speaker 1: in three four years like I'd rather, I'd rather turn
- 49:15Speaker 1: it over. And it's it's hard because you know, you
- 49:17Speaker 1: got jac Jackson, who's what like twenty seven twenty I mean,
- 49:19Speaker 1: he's that kind of guy. So if you're gonna pay
- 49:22Speaker 1: somebody probably should pay him. It's just a hard, hard
- 49:25Speaker 1: balancing act, especially when you think. I mean, I like
- 49:28Speaker 1: Jaylen Mills, and I see maybe Jaylen Mills could be
- 49:30Speaker 1: the guy that replaces mccordy at Free Safety. Maybe. But
- 49:33Speaker 1: you know, really, when you look at it, if after
- 49:35Speaker 1: jac Jackson, you don't really have any matchup corners Jonathan
- 49:38Speaker 1: Jones as he mentioned, I mean, I think Jonathan Jones,
- 49:41Speaker 1: Shack Mason, or the two going into the last years
- 49:43Speaker 1: their deal. I think combine, they're like eighteen million in
- 49:45Speaker 1: Cats base. I mean, it's just, you know, a bunch
- 49:47Speaker 1: of money going to those two guys, both valuable guys,
- 49:50Speaker 1: Shack Mason getting all pro votes and everything. But they're
- 49:52Speaker 1: gonna have to make a decision on them too. I
- 49:54Speaker 1: think that they're probably the primary two contracts you look
- 49:56Speaker 1: at when they have to adjust some stuff, and I wish,
- 49:59Speaker 1: I wish you could at Miguel on it to give
- 50:00Speaker 1: us the full rundown. It's because it is. It's tight
- 50:03Speaker 1: and they've got it. They're gonna have to do some maneuvering. Okay, Eric,
- 50:09Speaker 1: you want to do another call or should I do
- 50:10Speaker 1: an email? Um, let's do one more call before we
- 50:14Speaker 1: do before we move on. John is in Washington? Is
- 50:16Speaker 1: that Washington State? Or the district district. Okay, what's up, hey, guys. UM,
- 50:24Speaker 1: I agree with a lot of what's been said. UM,
- 50:27Speaker 1: I do think there are are things, particularly on the
- 50:30Speaker 1: defensive side. I think we're gonna do a part in part.
- 50:33Speaker 1: And part of this is because I've been looking since
- 50:36Speaker 1: midseason at the draft prospects, and frankly, linebacker and safety
- 50:44Speaker 1: outside of four guys and not necessarily the top four
- 50:47Speaker 1: guys on each for each position outside of four guys,
- 50:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't take them because it looks to me like
- 50:55Speaker 1: you're either repeating at linebacker, you're repeating win out or
- 51:00Speaker 1: or you're getting Jordan Richards two point out in the
- 51:02Speaker 1: safe key. So I think this is the time to
- 51:07Speaker 1: get the pinky, get the binky wide receiver. The corner
- 51:13Speaker 1: draft is great. I would double dip on corners. This
- 51:17Speaker 1: is the year to double tip on corners. That goes
- 51:19Speaker 1: well into the sixth seventh round of quality pressman aggressive
- 51:26Speaker 1: good uh, you know, diagnosing of route corners in this year,
- 51:31Speaker 1: and I think you have to obviously fix the offensive
- 51:33Speaker 1: line issues and um, you know, get run stoppers on
- 51:38Speaker 1: the defensive line and particularly disciplined to edge directors. You know,
- 51:41Speaker 1: to take some of the weight off bar More and
- 51:44Speaker 1: Jude On. So I think it's going to be take
- 51:47Speaker 1: down the front seven to the stud and I think
- 51:50Speaker 1: there's there's going to be a sort of a real
- 51:52Speaker 1: ranging of this of the gbs that we're playing the
- 51:57Speaker 1: backup corner role into safe so Jail and Mills, Miles, Bryant,
- 52:02Speaker 1: Sean Wade. I think they're going to see those guys
- 52:05Speaker 1: for in a dun Herman type role or a you know,
- 52:10Speaker 1: turning books type role. I think that's the way to
- 52:13Speaker 1: go because just there's so few safeties that make me go,
- 52:18Speaker 1: oh yeah, that that's when we need to get. And
- 52:20Speaker 1: I think you could just stick with in house guys
- 52:24Speaker 1: on that for at least a year and then wait
- 52:26Speaker 1: till twenty twenty three to get the speedy linebackers and
- 52:30Speaker 1: the good, the really good safeties. Okay, I like good info. Yeah,
- 52:35Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear about your way ahead of us
- 52:36Speaker 1: on our draft preps. Yeah. I dip my toes into
- 52:40Speaker 1: into the wide receivers. That's about it so far. But
- 52:42Speaker 1: thanks for the college. But I find myself a lot more.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I mean, I always you know me, I'm always excited.
- 52:47Speaker 1: But I was like you know, getting into the draft,
- 52:50Speaker 1: but after last year, and you know, it's just I
- 52:53Speaker 1: think the draft is the way to go. And as
- 52:55Speaker 1: much as they did all the free agency stuff last year,
- 52:57Speaker 1: it's just again, yeah, when you have an opportunity, got
- 53:00Speaker 1: nail it. And this is it's so Yeah, when when
- 53:02Speaker 1: you have the opportunity like they did last year, as
- 53:04Speaker 1: Fred said earlier, um, take advantage of it. You know,
- 53:07Speaker 1: you've got the cap space other teams don't. There are
- 53:10Speaker 1: players out there you want go get them. Great, love it,
- 53:13Speaker 1: but I think year to year you need to try
- 53:15Speaker 1: to be as successful as you can in the draft
- 53:18Speaker 1: because I think we've seen enough bad drafts in recent
- 53:21Speaker 1: years that had those worked out a little bit better,
- 53:23Speaker 1: maybe they wouldn't be in such a dire position as Yeah. Yeah, oh,
- 53:28Speaker 1: I think you're still suffering from that stretch of what
- 53:32Speaker 1: four years or something, Yeah, at least three where you
- 53:36Speaker 1: really didn't hit on on guys that are foundational picks. Yeah,
- 53:41Speaker 1: especially at a receiver, and you know, the like I
- 53:44Speaker 1: said earlier, it's the the guys that the guys at linebacker,
- 53:47Speaker 1: which you know, I just you know, you look at
- 53:49Speaker 1: the draft, at the depth chart and it's like mcgron, McMillan, Jennings,
- 53:53Speaker 1: to Vy, uh, you know, Judean, uche Van, noy Winovich, Perkins.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I mean, those are the guys I mean, and only
- 53:59Speaker 1: a few of them have played, I mean, annoying jude
- 54:01Speaker 1: On and after that it's you know, kind of a mishmash.
- 54:04Speaker 1: So that's there's there's a lot, a lot to consider
- 54:07Speaker 1: in that group. Ramon and Tampa writes in he says,
- 54:11Speaker 1: I've been advocating for this for some time. He's writing
- 54:14Speaker 1: about what a rebuild looks like to him. A rebuild
- 54:17Speaker 1: for me would have meant strategically building for the future.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Playing Stidham and the rookies. We have to develop them,
- 54:24Speaker 1: see what they have and get a better draft pick,
- 54:27Speaker 1: drafting a quarterback for the future and better players if
- 54:30Speaker 1: you don't believe the ones you have are good, getting
- 54:32Speaker 1: a corps on both sides through both drafts and letting
- 54:35Speaker 1: the older guys go. But I think the bottleneck is built.
- 54:38Speaker 1: I don't think he drafts well enough. I also feel
- 54:41Speaker 1: as good as he is, perhaps he can't relate to
- 54:44Speaker 1: what this generation wants. Anyhow, Let's see what happens next year.
- 54:47Speaker 1: I hope it's better than the last two. Is he's
- 54:50Speaker 1: saying he didn't want them to draft Macana. I think
- 54:54Speaker 1: he's same place Stidham. But you got to get that
- 54:57Speaker 1: quarterback somehow, I know. I mean they thought, yeah, they
- 55:01Speaker 1: thought mac was the guy, why not take him? Yeah? Yeah.
- 55:04Speaker 1: I just think it's unrealistic to just play all your
- 55:08Speaker 1: young players. Record be damned. Whatever happens happens, and then
- 55:12Speaker 1: that's going to prove something to you. I don't think
- 55:14Speaker 1: that that's their mode of thinking at all. I think
- 55:16Speaker 1: they're always trying to build a competitive football team every
- 55:19Speaker 1: single season. Uh it's you know, I don't think as
- 55:22Speaker 1: much as we get into like what's a rebuild, what's not?
- 55:25Speaker 1: I just think they look at it one year at
- 55:26Speaker 1: a time. What do we need able to be with
- 55:27Speaker 1: They're they're not really looking at it with this grand
- 55:29Speaker 1: master plan of and then in four years we'll have this,
- 55:33Speaker 1: and then in six years we'll have you know, it's
- 55:35Speaker 1: it's a year to year business. And you know, and
- 55:38Speaker 1: and as Paul likes to say too, like they've seen
- 55:40Speaker 1: all these guys in practice, like they know what they
- 55:42Speaker 1: can do, just because we haven't seen Jared'stidham or play
- 55:46Speaker 1: you know, significant roles in a game. Like they're not
- 55:49Speaker 1: like flying blind about those players. They've seen them every
- 55:52Speaker 1: day out of the building. I mean, that's the big
- 55:54Speaker 1: argument I had with Paul about, you know, the younger
- 55:56Speaker 1: players and all that. And I really think they played
- 55:58Speaker 1: the guys who they thought help them win the games,
- 56:01Speaker 1: you know, a most. And if luche was showing up
- 56:05Speaker 1: in practice that much, I believe he'd be out there. Yeah,
- 56:09Speaker 1: I mean too, you know, I you know, but practice
- 56:12Speaker 1: is different than game, like you can't replicate. But Mike,
- 56:16Speaker 1: if you're setting a culture on your team, it's like, well,
- 56:19Speaker 1: this guy's not showing up in practice, but we're going
- 56:21Speaker 1: to put him in out over a guy, you know,
- 56:24Speaker 1: like Kyle van Noy who's a proven veteran. What does
- 56:27Speaker 1: that say to the rest of the team, Like, you know,
- 56:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I yeah, I can. I I just
- 56:33Speaker 1: I just think you have to do something in practice
- 56:35Speaker 1: to earn your role on game day. It's one of
- 56:39Speaker 1: the hardest things that we try to figure out here is,
- 56:41Speaker 1: you know, why why do guys some guys play? Why
- 56:44Speaker 1: does some guys get benched? Why does you know? Why
- 56:45Speaker 1: does Stevenson you know, not see the field again after
- 56:48Speaker 1: play X or you know what, why why don't these guys,
- 56:51Speaker 1: you know, why does Christian Barmore come in and he's
- 56:53Speaker 1: able to you know, get it, and you know other
- 56:56Speaker 1: guys are just kind of toiling when you're like waiting
- 56:58Speaker 1: for them to do something. It's it's hard, it is
- 57:01Speaker 1: and and I do think that there's something to be
- 57:03Speaker 1: said for as somebody who loves, you know, high school
- 57:05Speaker 1: college sports that you know, we've all been there when
- 57:08Speaker 1: that random freshman all of a sudden gets thrust in
- 57:10Speaker 1: and wow, he really looked pretty good. I think we
- 57:12Speaker 1: found a player, you know, I think I just don't
- 57:14Speaker 1: think that that's as common in professional sports. By the
- 57:17Speaker 1: time you get to that point, you kind of know
- 57:18Speaker 1: what guys have, but I mean they need to Hopefully
- 57:21Speaker 1: there's a gem and that group of linebackers that I read,
- 57:23Speaker 1: and maybe Anthony Jennings come back and you know, he's
- 57:26Speaker 1: he's kind of like a younger High Tower. He was
- 57:28Speaker 1: a guy that could play inside and outside. Maybe he
- 57:30Speaker 1: has something. But I can't help but feel like we're
- 57:32Speaker 1: kind of just crossing your fingers and hoping with a
- 57:35Speaker 1: lot of those guys, Yeah, Matt and Devin uk so
- 57:39Speaker 1: last weekend or until last week and that was very
- 57:41Speaker 1: much with the people who were saying that we should
- 57:44Speaker 1: resign jac. However, now I swung completely the other way.
- 57:48Speaker 1: We have to work out how to win back the division.
- 57:51Speaker 1: And if you're paying a corner top money but they
- 57:54Speaker 1: can't lock down the good receivers in the league, then
- 57:56Speaker 1: it's a hindrance. Jac has unfortunately proven the past couple
- 58:00Speaker 1: of seasons that he can't slow down digs, So I
- 58:03Speaker 1: don't think he's worth the money in that case, as
- 58:05Speaker 1: it doesn't help us within the division. We have too
- 58:08Speaker 1: many holes and not a great deal of money, so
- 58:10Speaker 1: I think we'll have to bring in more slightly less
- 58:13Speaker 1: talented quarters and try to slow teams down schematically. Yeah,
- 58:18Speaker 1: that's I mean, that's that's kind of where I am.
- 58:21Speaker 1: A combination of, you know, both how I feel and
- 58:24Speaker 1: how I feel like the team feels, just generally about cornerbacks,
- 58:29Speaker 1: how good he is, how much space you have, how
- 58:33Speaker 1: much of the chunk you'd have to give directly to him?
- 58:35Speaker 1: You know, do you want to make Jasey Jackson the
- 58:37Speaker 1: centerpiece of the whole off season? I think they probably
- 58:41Speaker 1: need too much. I think even if they franchise them
- 58:43Speaker 1: again five years plan, I'm not sure that they're Super
- 58:46Speaker 1: Bowl contenders next year if they keep Jase Jackson like
- 58:48Speaker 1: they might have been in oh seven when they kept
- 58:50Speaker 1: to Sante Samuel using the franchise tag and Lene let
- 58:52Speaker 1: him walk. I'm of the mind that I think that
- 58:55Speaker 1: the likely scenario is that they're gonna let him walk.
- 59:00Speaker 1: But that's probably what I think. Uh yeah, it might,
- 59:02Speaker 1: It might be the case. All right, time to take
- 59:06Speaker 1: a break, you guys, okay for that? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 59:08Speaker 1: that's cool. All right, we'll take a break. We'll come back.

- 1:00:09Speaker 1: it takes a leap of faith, a belief in what
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: you're striving toward, and a willingness to make the commitment
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: day in and day out to something bigger than yourself.

- 1:07:24Speaker 1: get back? I mean, we're back in the playoffs, but
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: how do we take that next step? Or do we
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: do we take a step back? Yeah, you better hope
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: they don't take a step back, But yeah, I think that.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I think you have to keep that in the back
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: of your mind as a distinct possibility depending on what
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: they do this office. Right, well, maybe maybe this season
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: looks a little more like we expected it to where,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: you know, I think somewhat to some extent, this was
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: a defense that started off great and faded again. But
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: you know, maybe if you take some lumps early next year,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: but you play you know, some younger guys or some
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: new guys, I mean, it's probably gonna have to happen.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Maybe then you get the peak at the end of
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: the season. Like that fits the narrative kind of thought
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: you were going to get. Yeah, you always want to
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: end the season upward trajectory, even if you lose it
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: in the playoffs. The last few years, yeah, I mean
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: just absolutely collapses. Yep, three years in a row. Right,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: It's like, well, yeah, last year they didn't make the playoffs,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: but twenty nineteen was the Brady finale, and right, so yeah,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I mean three disappointing ends to the season in a row,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: started out eighteen right something to that. I just that
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: that that's the thing that keeps troubling me. That's just
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: a bigger issue than all of it is. Just why,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: why this is not what should be happening for a
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: team that works so hard for all year, all the
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: teams were coming. I just think we just need to
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: get some better players, that's all. Yeah, they got to
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: come together better a thing. Tony writes in to those
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: who think coach Goat is the issue, that's ridiculous, outrageous really. However,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: for those who think the other guy, the GM, might
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: be an issue, perhaps they have a Pointast year's draft
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: was terrific, but it might have been the first terrific
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: draft since twenty thirteen. Those drafted in the first and
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: second rounds are supposed to comprise the core of your
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: team for years and ideally not only deserve that second contract,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: but become the best players and even the leaders. Here,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Bill has to go to the free agent route and
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: try to make up for the draft failings, and in
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: most instances has signed Jimmy's and Joe's where good draftees
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: and young veterans should have been on the team instead.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: This team is old, slow, and lacks talent on both
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: sides of the ball. How many really good players do
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: they have in the twenty four to twenty nine year
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: old range. They have enough mediocre slash average players. It's
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: time for some playmakers. It will take five years to rebuild.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Oh boy, WHOA, that's a lot of years. Well, I
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: mean it's just what and then what in five years
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: you're a super Bowl contender? And it was just like
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: it's just so fluid and there's no like rhyme or
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: reason to three, four or five years. I mean, there's
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: gonna take some time. I know you can't. But there's
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: no set like they could be super Bowl contenders next year.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: It could take three I don't And a lot of
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: it depends on what other teams in the league are
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: doing too, Like this year we saw, you know a
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: lot of teams that we thought were going to be
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: you know, clearcut best teams, like I think we're seeing
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: them now in the playoffs. But for a while there
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: it was touch and go, Like the number one seed
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: in both conferences was up for grabs for like a
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: good month or so, and it was changing, you know,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: trading hands. Yeah, and that teams weren't playing, like even
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Buffalo wasn't playing as well as we thought. For a while,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Kansas City wasn't playing as well as we thought. Maybe
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: in the NFC, Green Bay has been the most consistent team,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: but like they started off with a thumping in Week
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: one against the Saints. That's also like I mean, and
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: how do teams handle success? I mean, Miami there to
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: some extent, probably starting over without Flores, you know that's
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: a Now, how does Buffalo handle success? Everybody's coming for
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: their coordinators, a bunch, all their guys are gonna want
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: to get paid now, you know. I mean that was
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: what made the Patriots special that they could you know, continue,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: And of course you've got Josh Allen. Patriots had Tom Brady,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: So there is precedent to maintain your dominance over the division.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: But he's gonna have to do it probably with different
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. He's gonna have to do it with some
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: different offensive pieces as well. So everything is fluid. There's
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: no rhyme or reason to you know. All right, Well,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: in four years you'll be able to get another Yeah,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you can't put a number of hard you just can't.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: You could hit, you could hit it out of the
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: park in this next draft and all of a sudden,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: I mean, you know what, what do you think that
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: the Bengals plan was two years ago before they drafted you,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Joe Burrow? Do you think that they said or two
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: years away from being in the end. I mean, they
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: don't know. Like they got they got they got a
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: good picking Burrow. They were able to get Chase. It worked.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: They've been stacking, right, But if Burrow was a bust
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: like that, then they'd be starting all over it, like
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: like like the Jets have been for the past, like
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: you know, twenty years or whatever, right, And I mean
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: you know the Bills did for twenty five years. You know.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: It's like you you can't guarantee that all the pieces
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: that you add are gonna hit. So yeah, these things
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: can change. Yeah they can change quickly, but it could
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: also take a long time for them to change for
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: the better. Effort is in Hollywood, you know, very well,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: very lifelong friends. Zach. He says that Paul Parillo has
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: stated on more than one occasion that Jonah Smith had
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: a similar year compared to other years. I know in
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: the real world that once an employee gets a huge raise,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: one is expected to take on additional responsibilities and to
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: perform at a higher level. I don't understand why Paul
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: keeps making excuses for him. Secondly, I understand that the
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Patriots will give Johonno Smith another year, But what would
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: be the salary cap damage after the twenty two season
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: if they let him go. I would rather use Johonno
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Smith's money on Jason Jackson, who was an undrafted free
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: agent and became a pro bowler. Finally, are the chances
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: high that the franchise tag will be used on jac
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I don't know about high. I mean, but yeah, there's
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: a chance and jo he might be one of those
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: guys where like it costs you more to cut him
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: than it does to just let him play out his
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: deal because of the way that the contracts are structure.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: But I mean, I think Paul's point was just that
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: maybe our expectations were too high on Johonna Smith. And
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I don't disagree with the money that they gave him,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: the length of contract four years, I mean, all those
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: things point to him being a significant part of this offense. Certainly,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: not a middling blocking tight end who is up and
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: down in blocking. So I do think there's a disconnect there.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: But I also think that again, when they signed those
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: two tight ends, everybody thought Groan Hernandez the two tight
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: end set. Well, they played more with Jacob Johnson on
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: the field than they did with two tight ends. You know,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: they played more power football than than two tight ends.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: So you know, we I think set some false expectations
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: in terms of what the plan was. And I think, granted,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: you look at the money they gave those guys, it
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: seems to make sense, but I think, you know, John
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: nu Smith, he just he didn't look comfortable at all
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: this year really well with what they asked him to do.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: I think when you saw him coming in, it was,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: you know, getting him the ball yards after catch. I don't,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think they signed him to be
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: the blocking tight end. I think it kind of ended
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: up that way a little bit. And I think a
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: good question would be did you want to go two
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: tight end sets? Yeah, but you just couldn't because that's
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: not your best personnel and you'd rather have you know,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Born Myers and Agalore's the three receivers on the field,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: which is what they played probably like fifty sixty percent
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: of the time. And I think it's way too early
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: to give up on him. I mean, you paid him
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: a lot of money. He's had a year now. Now,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Josh and the offensive coaches know better what these new
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: guys can do. And I'm including Born are everybody that
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: they added on on offense. Now, let's see what they
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: do this offseason in terms of Okay, we know where
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: your strengths are, John who, here's how we're going to
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: best utilize you. Maybe they do play a little bit
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: more too tight end next year. You know, maybe they couldn't,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: like you said, maybe they couldn't afford to do it
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: this year because of situations or you know, just where
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: they were in the game. He was late to like
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: he wasn't really around and OTAs was he was. One day.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: I remember he came one here. It was springtime. Springtime,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: he was fine, and it was Hunter Henry who was
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: like limping around. Then in the summer it was the opposite.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: It was like Smith was load to come back and
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Henry was making the plays. And but I don't I
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: don't know if I necessarily think that had much to
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: do with it. But he's got a year in he's
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: they've all got a year in the program. Now, let's
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: let's give it a little bit more time before we
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: rushed to start cutting people and people are just way
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: too impatient. It just rubs me the wrong. Yeah, Freddy,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: want to go back to some calls before we have Yeah,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: oh yeah, the commeras is stacked. Let's go to our
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: buddy Chris with a tia and thanks for hanging through
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: the break, my man. You got it, guys, thanks for
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: having me um. I had a question about the makeup
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: of the defense and about um guys sort of being
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: there too long and guys knowing if the team is
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: good or not. And what I mean by that is
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: and Brady's last year. You know, he had the famous
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: quote before the Texans game on the Sunday night that
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: he was the most miserable eight no quarterback in the league. Yeah,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: and something to that effect. Yeah, And I think, deep
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: down inside obviously he was on his way out. I
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: get that, but you know, he knew that the team
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: wasn't good enough. And when I look at like the
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: past month and what happened, which is really a mystery,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Like after the buy the team just spell off a
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: cliff and how they could go from like a team
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: in the Cleveland game where you know, Jacobe Meyers scores
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: his first touchdown and the whole team is in the
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: end zone congratulating them to ending the season like they did.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: And I wonder if guys like HIGs Hower and mccordy
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and they've been to enough of these like they know, like,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: you know, we're not that good, and not that they
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: didn't play hard, but you know that that kind of
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: sort of permeated the locker room. I wanted to get
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: your thoughts on what you think about that or in
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: my reach, No, I it's funny you say that, because
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: I was the thought did cross my mind earlier in
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: the show when we were talking about it, and I said, yesterday,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: you know, are there is there an element of the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: new Patriots waiting around for the old Patriots to suddenly
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: like kick them into championship form. But I think this
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: is a good point of And even if they don't
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: think like we don't have it, like I just think
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: part of it is you don't have Tom Brady anymore.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: And there's a certain thing I think when you knew
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: you had Tom Brady that you know you're going to
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: be in the mix right down to the end. And
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: I'm sure that there's an element of we really like Mac,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: you know, we we like this new team, but let's
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: be honest, you know, we're not we're not on the
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: same level as these elite teams that are you know
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: now in the in the divisional round. Perhaps I think
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: there's a lot of speculation as to what what what
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: went wrong, because there's just it went so bad, it
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: went so badly wrong down the stretch that I think
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: it's it's a great I don't know if it's great
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: because I don't know if I get an answer to it. Well,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: I just I also wondered, a Christian if we were
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: fooled a little bit uh into thinking that this defense
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: was really, you know, as good as they appeared to
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: be during that seven game stretch. You know, I think
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: I think there's an element of that that plays into
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: it too. You know, when you're winning, everything looks so
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: much better, you know, you kind of glance over the
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: flaws or you try to ignore them. And I just wonder,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: if you know, the Browns were healthy, you know, if
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: the yeah, a little bit of that I think right.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: All right, all right, thanks for the call. Um, go
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: next to will Willie in Philly. What's up? William? What's up?
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: How are you doing good? It's on your mindset? Okay? Um.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I wish Paul was there to hear this, mon because
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: I would like for him to hear this. So you
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: got all right? Um, I thought it at y'all. Also
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: to just tell me what you said, all right, just
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: just hear me out, okay. All right? So um, all right,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: so we're basically some other rebuilding basically, and everybody sew
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: my defense defense, So what if Bill Man? What if
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Bill just do often when I'm saying that, we all
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: we all agree that Mac needs a wide receiver. But
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: what if Bill goes, you know, goes really hard at it,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: basically giving him the weapons that he needs. I mean,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: we all said it, okay, So my theories, my theories.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Mike Keiper had a drafted day basically at his one point,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: no draft was was released. Had jameson William at twenty
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: one pick okay, so we he gets uh he has
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: a torn acl unfortunately, dub bet. But basically, if you're
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: willing to be Patriots fans, which I know we are,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: a little bit unpatient, but I'm patient, but I ain't
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: gonna find with that. But if we're willing to wait,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: like you said, Eric, it's gonna take three years. You know,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: we're it's a it's a it's a basically a working
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: progress here. Think. So if y'all willing, if we're willing
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: to wait, you can get your your speed basically your
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: dynamic receiver basically you know what I mean. And there's
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: another receiver run get. But unfortunately he has a torn
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: ETL two and I don't know if it's your friends
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: gonna run with that. I don't know feel if we
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: go that way, but they vote from Alabama John Damienson waiting.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I mean, so if you want to like get him
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: a path, you know, because they they're coming off a
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: torn acl but they're being ready, then next year's draft
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: go all hard and uh with your defense. Your defense
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: is gonna be a little bit self hard. This year
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: still be like Kansas City. I mean, why can't do
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? So, I mean, how let
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: y'all chop that up with you? All right? Thanks? Wye,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: No No, and Jill, that was you know, I was
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: listening to what you're saying, and I was thinking, you know,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: what are the teams that just were so offensive heavy
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: that they could win with a deficient defense. And I
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: think back at the Coats with Peyton Manning or like
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: you said, Mahomes with the early Kansas City team. But
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the difference is Hayton Manning's a Hall of famer. Mahomes
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: is going to be a Hall of famer. You know,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: I'm not sure Matt Jones is going to be a
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Hall of Famer. And you know, like, okay, let's stock
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: up on offense. But is Matcham's that good where he
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: can do what a Manning can did and what Mahomes did,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: and you know, name maybe the other great offenses, Dan Marino,
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: well they they had a pretty good defense back then.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: I would say the no names, but it just you know,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: just put because Jones job MATCHI dates they played together.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: You know, he don't know Jameson Williams, but he does
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: know John met If you look at it on YouTube,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Mac was throwing the ball like crazy. Just look at Yeah,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: all right, I'm gonna leave it at that. But take yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: I mean there's something that like hoping that you can
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: rekindle or recreate the magic that since he had with
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: Burrow and Chase, like they played together. I don't think
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: it needs to be that's specific because there's a lot
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: of there's a lot of guys that you know, even
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: the non albums that are supposed thanks for the I
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: just I love that. I love the thought of the Patriots,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: like the convergence of like they drafted an Alabama guy. Yeah,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: they drafted over receiver in the first round. They got
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: a weapon. He's got an ACL he's tore his a
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: cl he's probably gonna play this year, right, Like how
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: would pay your vants? Like that? That seems like now
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: taking him in the first round, taking him, he's gonna
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Piper had his mock draft out already and he had
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: the Patriots taking Williams in the first round at twenty one.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Well that's what Williams said. Yeah, yeah, Michi in the
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: second round. Yeah, taking both alb receivers with the twenty seals. Yeah,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: it was just funny. I mean, it is a two
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: year plan already for twenty twenty three. Oh, there'll be
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: there'll be no good offense this year, but next year
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: and when we're gonna keep Mac and Bubble wraps. We're
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: gonna play Stidham all next year, right, right? Is healthy? Right? No,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: it's but I like the I like the thought of
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: of you know, trying to trying to get that player. Um.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: But you know, it's just take your pick on the
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: defensive side of it. Like I think I could see
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: an offensive tackle, I could see a wide receiver on offense. UM.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: But you know, defensively you can make an argument really
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: for for just about any position. Go ahead, Eric, if
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you want to take another Okay, I know I was
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: gonna say, if you want to, you know, throw an
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: email in there. We do have some calls, but you know,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: mix it up a little bit, all right, Patrick and
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Ottama writes in uh, this season has made a few
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: things abundantly clear. Three things need to change immediately to
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: allow the team to make the next jump. One draft
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: talented players, not bills guys YEP to get away from
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: when the league zigs week zag philosophy, which means bringing
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: in speed and not size. Three more attention to detail
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: from coaches. Too many coaching related penalties the last few years,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: like too many men on the field. All of this
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: leads directly to Bill Belichick. He performed a herculean task
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: getting the team to this point, But now the warts
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: are quite clear for everyone to see, and I'm not
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: sure we can expect Bill to change at this point.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: I feel this is what we'll be getting for the
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: next few years. It's funny when because this isn't the
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: first time Bill's gotten that type of criticism from people
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: that listened to the show. But for a guy who
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: is so game plan oriented week to week, he's willing
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: to adjust from one week, one game to the next
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: do something completely different, yet his overall approach he seems
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: to be stuck in. Like it doesn't seem seems sort
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: of paradoxical that a guy who is so you know,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: insistent on changing his game plan week to week is
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: less um, is less willing to change his overall philosophy,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: doesn't it seem kind of Yeah, And that's and that's
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: and I think that, like we talked about a littit
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: during the season, where you know, what point are you
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: kind of neither here nor there? You're so busy trying
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: to be everything that you end up being nothing. You know,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Like that I think is maybe kind of what the
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: root of some of that is, where you know, you
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: had a lot of linebackers, but you didn't have a
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: lot of diversity in those kind of linebackers. You don't
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: really have um, you know, like go back to uh
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: to uh God, I'm like it on the veteran linebacker
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: named two thousand and one to two thousand and four
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: Roman Fighter. You know, like you had some some versatility
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: in those guys, and I think maybe you had a
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: little bit more with van Noy and Collins in the past.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: And you know, they've gotten a little bit older than
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: they don't quite move like they used to. Um, But
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: you know, it's it's they're all kind of the same now,
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: Like I mean, maybe the slight variations, but they're all
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: kind of the same player. And I think those players
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: combine with the safeties or where are all those game
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: plans kind of shift, you know, and you don't really
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: have as much to go to now. But I think
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: that's a really interesting philosophical question about what they're going
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: to do going forward. Go back to the A ticket
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: hot line. Freddie Sure Mark is in Halifax. Hello Mark,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Hey guys, how's it going pretty good? Hi? Mark, Good.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: I'm still sick to my stomach about the game on
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: the weekend. I don't understand the defensive defense. The defense
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: right that. I know, me and you man, we're both there.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: Can't get over it. You know, they stay Bill. They
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: had that game, that game plan that he had against
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: the Giant. Yeah, where are we putting that on the
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Hall of Fame for the greatest defensive game plan? Well,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: I think against the Bills, you could put that game
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: plan in the Hall of Fame of trash because I
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: don't understand how he allowed Josh Allen to become like Listen,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Josh Allen's a great quarterback, don't get me wrong, but
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: I think you mentioned it earlier. Might His stats against
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: other teams leading up to the Patriots was okay, And
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: against the Patriots he looks like her createst quarterback of
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: all time. And I think it has a lot to
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: do with Bill's game plan against mobile quarterback. He doesn't
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: want these guys to get out of the pockets, so
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: it's all about to contain and he kind of thinks
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: that these guys are going to make a mistake, and
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: a lot of times they do. But Josh Allen, if
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you just let him sit back there, he has the
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: arm strength, the talent, the awareness, not to make those mistakes,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: and I think it bit them in the butt twice.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: And it was one thing to get burnt in week
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: seventeen or week sixteen, but to let it happen again
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: in the playoffs and not change anything up and not
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: pressure him and listen. I know our defense isn't as
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: good as we thought it was, but I don't think
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: it's that bad that, you know, we can't force them
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: the punt at all. It's one right, get one put.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: It seems to me like, yeah, there's no defense in
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: the NFL that is as bad as what we saw
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: against the Bills. Now, you know, like usually like even
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: the worst defenses in the world force the punt here
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: and there. Yeah, you know. Yeah, it was just it's awful.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: And two games in a row they didn't put my mind.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: And I mentioned this in an email earlier on. I
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: think it has a lot to do with Matt Patricia
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: being back in the fold. I know that Paul didn't
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: like that, like he is all about this past defensive style.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: We lost that intensity when block when Flores was very
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, we used to blitz guy. We didn't blitz him.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: I don't think we blitzed him once at the end
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: of the game. So Burthdas, don't get me wrong, but
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I think you had to put a little pressure on
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: him to get that ball a little faster, because you know,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: he was just sitting there playing track with guys. It
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: was unbelievable. Well, it's fair, and I'm trying to play
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: a little Devil's advocate here. Um, when Flores was here,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: that was, you know, three years ago. Josh Allen was
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: three years less experienced in the NFL. Like, you're more
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: willing to take a chance to blitzer a guy who's
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: in his first or second year than a guy who
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: was as experienced now as Josh Allen is. So I mean,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: if you're going to criticize that particular game plan against
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Josh Allen, it's kind of tough. Like teams didn't want
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: to blitz Brady that much because they knew he could
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: he could beat them with that. Yeah, you know that
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: you had to have a certain type of of pass
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: rush to get Brady flustered. Typically it was up the middle. Yeah,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: But I was just watching the guys in the replay,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and it sounds it looked like to me that they
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: weren't even like it was almost like they were kind
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: of almost creating like a pocket of him not getting out.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: Like I was watching guys like there was no effort
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: to get past their blockers, Like a lot of them
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: were just kind of standing up dancing around. Uh you
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: know with mobile quarterbacks in the past us. Yeah, like
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: you look at Cam Newton in the past, he burned us.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Um do you look at you know, Deshaun Watson, these
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: mobile quarterbacks. Bill is so scared that they're going to
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: break contain that he does not want to rush the quarterback.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: And it doesn't matter because Aaron did it. Anyway, he
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: kept by our guys even when we weren't taught, even
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: when we were trying to contain himself. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: It was just frustrating. I just can't believe that the
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: deason ended on such a poor note, especially when Bill
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: was supposed to be this defensive He is a defensive genius,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: but like that must just grind his gears that. Yeah,
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: you know, it would have been like different, like if
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: you've gone down, which is, if you've gone down like
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: a typical AFC's divisional tight last possession, they got us,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: Like you have such a different feeling about this, like,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: I feel like I'd be so much more like we're close.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: But it's just like he said, the underlying current of like, man,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: we look like we had nothing on defense. Would you
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: have would you have felt better if the defense did
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: what it did, you know, gave up touchdowns on every drive,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: but the offense put up you know, thirty Maybe a
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: little bit maybe a little bit, just because I think
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: that the problem is that you got to figure out
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Josh Allen, and it looked like they had absolutely no
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: clue to figure out Josh Allen. I will say this.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I will say this, if the offense had answered a
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: couple of times, it changes the mindset of the Bills.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: The Bills on offense could do whatever they wanted. Yeah,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: they didn't have to worry, they didn't have to worry
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: about keeping up, you know. Um, so that's that's such
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: an advantage to play at. Yeah, you know. So I
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: do think that if if the Patriots offense had been
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: able to put up a couple of early scores, you know,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: you know, show some semblance of life, Yeah, it would
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: have slowed down the Bills offense a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: if if Michaelhide doesn't make that tremendous play on the interception.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: That's a touchdown too. Exactly. Yeah, I would just say, though,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: you know, I don't think the game plan is is
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: low on the list to me because I think they
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: tried everything with him. I think they tried to rush them.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: I mean, they're never gonna be send six seven guy defense.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Maybe b flow was a little bit, but I just don't.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: I think they're generally a conservative defense anyway, which I've
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: long since accepted. But I would put just the inability
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: to win matchups and the execution. Those are the top things.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: I don't think really if we had only played this
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: particular scheme or we would have had an answer. I
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: just when you don't have guys who can win one
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: on one like they were doing earlier in the year,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: that makes the difference of everything. I mean, that was
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: really the difference of the defense from the first part
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: of the year, which we have match youoed On and
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Christian Barmore were not able to be handled one on
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: one blocking, and that just set everything else up. You
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: don't have the blitz. You can arrange your pass rush
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: so that those guys you get favorable matchups, and but
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: when guys aren't winning one on one. That's just bad defense. No, no,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: no plan is going to overcome guys who don't win
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: and don't execute. Yeah, and Mark Mark brought up Matt Patricia,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: And I'll say this, if if Matt Patricia truly has
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: significant input into the defense, then I know for a
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: fact that there's too many voices in the room. Right.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: That's a good point. Yeah, because he's more like the
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: general can consultation. I'm sure he's got some input on
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: the defense, but I don't think he's in the play
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: callers year in the game maybe, But you're right, if
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: he is, Fred, I think you're right. I think that's
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: speaks to kind of the defensive coordinator. It's kind of
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: divided up to DAMEO is porely the de facto just
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: calling the plays. You don't we don't know, like that's
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: what you hear. But and I think, uh, and you
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: know Badard mentioned this too in his rite up. Uh,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: you know that there's just not a clarity of of
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: of communication. And I think that's been a big part
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: of you know, why Bill has liked a small, small staff.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: But I think maybe something's getting lost in translation with
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: all the different you know kind of different. The loss
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: of Ernie Adams underrated and there it is, no I know,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: I know, I mean, I mean, we thought Patricia was
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: going to play that role. I maybe, I mean, maybe
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: he did. I don't know. I don't know what he
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: was doing all year. You wonder if some of those
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: like in Game four down kind of you know, if
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: Ernie was an aggressive more aggressive Matt is less. I don't.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: I have no idea. Yeah, it's impossible for I mean,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: all we can do is speculate, But yeah, I don't know.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I think it's a fact something to consider. Roger Saint Louis,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: I thought, I think the worst part about the game
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: was losing to a division rival. If it was the
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: Raiders or Titans or some team like that, it wouldn't
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: have stung as much. I also hate agreeing with Paul,
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: but I don't. I also don't know if Mack is
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: the guy, and frankly, my confidence in him is dipped
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: every week since Thanksgiving. My way way too early prediction
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: for next year. The offense jails a little bit more,
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: starts to rely on the run a little less and less.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: The defense is hut garbage as it goes through a rebuild,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: and I would trade multiple picks to move up for
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: one of the Ohio state receivers in the draft. Trading up,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: you're speaking my language. I like receiver. Yeah, that's I
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: don't want to give up on the twenty twenty two
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: defense yet. I mean, I know it looked bad, but
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: you know, I think that they are well coached, and
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: I think even if they're less talent, even less talented
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: next year than they were this year, I think they
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: can play better than they did down the stretch more competitively.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I mean, how can you not. I mean a high
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: school team, high school defense could have gone out against
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: the Bills and did with that and not allowed to write.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: I like his other point though about the offense. I mean,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: I will feel much better if the offense doesn't have
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: to rely on the running game as much and Mac.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: That means Mac is throwing more. That means receivers are
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: getting more involved, the tight ends maybe are getting more involved.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: I would love to see that, regardless of what happens
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: is on the defensive side. Yeah, then I would feel
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: more confident. Doesn't have to be Jamar Chase. I mean,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: it's just got to be Brady year two with branch
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: and that you know, that player that kind of came
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: in and was able to, you know, instantly, kind of
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: pick things up and make an impact in a couple
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: of different roles as a receiver. All right, you want
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: me to go another one? Eric? Or uh, what time
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: is it? When do you want to start picks in?
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Like about ten minutes? Yeah, i'd say quarter of what
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: about quarter off? Okay? Sure, yeah, yeah, let's take it.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: Let's take another call. Then Ben is in Maryland. What's
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: up Ben? Hey, guys, how's it going? Hey? Ben? Um?
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: I have two questions then I'll take it off the air. Um,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: I'm wondering how you can judge QB's potential and how
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: someone can say Trevor Lewins so Zach Wilson would be
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: much better than Mac in like five years. And my
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: second question, um, I know you got a lot of
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: special Teams questions over the last week, but they were
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: number one in twenty twenty with Can't Make Good. I
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: don't know if you guys knew that they were number one,
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: and I don't think they got like I think most
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: of the guys stayed like Bailey stayed, Folk stayed Gun. Yeah,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: pretty much the same crew. Yeah, so I don't know
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: what went on. Um, I'll leave it to you guys
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: to take it off, all right, thanks Ben. Yeah, I
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: means you you could. I mean you could get specific
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: and say, you know, Jacob Johnson blue block, Giovanni Tavia
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: blue a block. I mean there's where you know some
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: of the specific plays. Um, but I I, you know,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: I agree. Usually I think special teams if they're average
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: and they're not hurting you, it's fine. Um. I did
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: dig into the research. I won't I won't really bust
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: it out right now, but thank you too. A couple
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: of people send me some articles about the special team
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: snaps and stuff, and it's it's there's definitely something to
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: it that the Patriots have, you know, you at least
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: this season, you know, four guys who were pretty much
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: just special teamers. You go around the league, most teams
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: have won one or two and I don't really I
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: really know, you know, And that's like, you know, talking
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: for the Patriots guys to play seventy percent of the
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: special team snaps and less than five percent of the
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: off of the defensive snaps. But someone also sent me
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: some research that was a little bit lower bar like
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: sixty percent and ten percent um. So I'm sure that
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: would change things slightly. But but the Patriots clearly four guys.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: And I was talking with Paul a little bit about it,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: and you know, it's it's guys like Joshua bledsoell like
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: next year, could he do what Cody Davis does? Could
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: he get in because if he can, that's experience and
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: maybe maybe he's not playing safety yet, but it's a
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: way to develop guys. Whereas you know, guys like Brandon
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: King and Cody Davis and these are you know, the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Matthew Slayers. Those are the big four, um, you know,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: and Slater is what he Every team's got and I'll
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: never complain about that. But you know, a guy like
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Brandon King, where he's a linebacker or safety depending how
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: you look at him. But you know, again, could ouja
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: play those roles? Could you use these special teams instead
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: of investing solely in veterans to just play special teams?
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: Could you allow some of your younger guys to play
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: those roles. And maybe they're not plus special teamers, but
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: they're getting NFL experience and they're starting to gain some
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: confidence that they can play. And then maybe when it
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: comes down to, oh, you know, guy got COVID, we
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: gotta stick you in that they're not getting thrown in
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: having just played on the practice squad, you know. So
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: it's definitely a conversation. I'll kind of pull together for
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: next week and Paul he's back with with with the
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: firm numbers, but I want to throw that in his face.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Definitely know it. It backs up what he says. It
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: backs up what he says. He's right. I mean that
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: they go above and beyond and they use multiple roster
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: spots on guys that that really only play special teams, which, hey,
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: when they're getting touchdowns and blocking punts and things. Things
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: were great. They had Later All Pro, they had Bailey
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: All Pro, they had Gunner is an All Pro. It's
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: hard to it's hard to improve on three All pros
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: on special teams. But it did seem like there was
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: there were more physical and mental mistakes made on special
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: teams this year than were you used to seeing. It
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: was kind of across the board though, right, yeah, I mean,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: you know, like just everybody defense and all of it.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: So I mean I think it's all yeah, it's all connected.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: His other question was about evaluating quarterbacks, And I mean
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: that one of the toughest things to do. I mean,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: it's it's tough to evaluate any rookie going into the
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: NFL and projecting what they can do. But like that's
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: a that's been impossible to do for the longest time.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: I mean I think back to you know, bled Zoe Meyer,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and then now you look back on it and say,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: how could we possibly have thought that Rick was worthy
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: of the number one overall? Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: You know, it's obvious now Who's So it's it's tough
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: even with the guys who were thought to be, um,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: you know, the cream of the crop first round picks.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: What what was the draft class when there was like
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: Tim Couch, Achille Smith, Like think about that, they were
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: like five quarterbacks taken. I think that year. I think
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: maybe one of them, maybe it was McNabb. Was he
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: in that class that like one out of the four
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: in the first round ended up being anything Kaide McNown
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: was another guy like that. Like, just like it's so
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: difficult at that position because I think part of it
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: is each team wants something different on offense, you know,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: like the Patriots when they had Brady like Obviously they
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: already had Blitzoe, but Bill and his offense and Charlie
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: they wanted something different out of the quarterback position. So
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: when you're evaluate evaluating the top talent, you're looking at
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: it from a different lens of like, okay, but does
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: he have to decision making qualities? A lot of guys
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: are just looking at like JaMarcus Russell types, huge athletic,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: strong arm, can throw sixty yards from his knee, Like
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: that doesn't work if you're trying to like run an
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: offense where you have to be on the same page
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: with your receiver and all of these crossing routes like
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: that's it's such a difficult thing to do, especially at
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: that position. It's an unfortunate feature of the league that
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: the best quarterbacks go to the worst teams. And you know,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: you named off some examples. A lot of times it's
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: the same teams over and over and over and over again.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: The cow many first round picks the Jets have had
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: at quarterback. You get a guy like Joe burrowh who
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: kind of breaks the mold. Even get a guy like
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield to some extent it who breaks the mold,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: at least initially in Cleveland. But you know, they get
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: stuck in these badly coached teams. And I mean, poor
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence, he didn't even make it a year with
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: his guy. Systems are gonna change, Guys are gonna you
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: know how many guys have the good fortune to end
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: up in a stable coaching staff with an offense that
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: knows what they're doing and knows what they want. Guy
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: right there were looking at Brady on the screen like
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: he was so lucky to have the same coach, the
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: same system for twenty years. Just became like he would
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: never have been that good if he had been like
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: on like Jacksonville and had to endure like three coaching
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: changes in like four years, like offensive cordinators, the turmoil,
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: all the press that comes with with all the losses
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: and everything, and it's just it's snowballs, and it's it's unfortunate.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: It's bad for the league. But I mean, I think
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: Mac is a good example of what happens when a
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: good quarterback ends up on a on a on a
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: good team that has good coaching in place. Yeah, well
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: you want to do another email or yeah no, no,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: I think we can we can clear clear it out
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: with an email and then Cody's in Indiana. He said,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: you guys talked on Tuesday about how you didn't like
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: Gunner as a returner. I may be misremembering, but didn't
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Kyle Dugger come out of college as a good returner?
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: Why can't we use him instead of Gunner? Yep? Yep.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: Tucker did has some big plays, but remember he was
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: doing it against inferior competition two, you know, in division two, right, uh,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: you know, and one of the big differences between the
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: divisions in college is speed and size, and you know,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: so he was like the big kid in the playground
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: in division two. Talking about Dugger D Yeah, I mean,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: so was Gunner. Gunner was a D two guy as well. Yeah,
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: I mean but MIDI state, Yeah, yeah, that's a good movement. Yeah,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: I don't know. I I saw Miguel wrote that, you know,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: he thought they might not even tender Gunner, and I
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: think that that's probably probably going to be the case.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: And it's it's two million, Yeah, he's an R. Yeah,
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: it's a lot a lot to pay for, you know,
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: for really, so it's first or a second round tender,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: first or second or original or original which he was undrafted,
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: which basically just would make him a free agent. Right,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: he's not going to take that, Yeah, well he might
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: because they might not have anything else to take, because
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: I mean, do you want to pay him two million
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: for what he does? No, I don't two million. It's
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: not going to be what they need. A fif's inn original.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: But then if free as he can probably make somewhere
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: in between, you know, maybe yeah, either way, it might be,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: might might lock him into too much money. You could
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: catch the ball. I know if he if he could
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: only right, if he had any sort of a role
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: as a wide receiver, it'd be worth keeping him around.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: But he doesn't. Maybe some kind of off season program
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: they can get him on that. He's open for two
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: off seasons now, machine, I know, I know, but it
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: just seems like a guy who can't get open can't
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: get Yeah. Well, well, all right, so I guess it's
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: that time of the week. All right. Oh, it's like
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: it's I get to play the part of Paul Pirello
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: here today. I can't hear the music. That's okay, it's playing,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: don't worry, and it's one. I'll let you know when
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: it's things out, all right, I'm gonna try to find
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: a Paul cadence to do this with. So, yeah, last
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: week we all had a pretty good week, some of
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: us more than others. We've got in first place, a
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: three way tie, Fred, Paul and Mike five and one,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: Eric four and two. Yeah, is that correct? The issues
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: with that? I actually didn't check my things last week. Yeah,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Cardinals lost, Cowboys lost. So yeah, those are my two losses.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: With the spread a little bit different. We've got Paul
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: a top with five and one, Fred second, four and two,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Mike third with three and three, and Eric two and
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: four after his exhausted my luck during the regular season,
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: so you guys can have the postseason what went wrong?
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: So those are the those are last week and we're
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: now onto the divisional round. Yea. By the way, Blendie
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: who actually keeps the right score, Yeah, confirmed that. In
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: the regular season. Of course Eric did win, but I
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: beat Paul by a game. Oh controversy somewhere Paul shaking
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: his fists away the sight of that. All right? Um,
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: so we start with Saturday at four thirty. The Bengals
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: are going to the Titans, that is Tennessee by three
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: and a half. Wait a minute, where's Tennessee by three
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: a half. It's only four games. I know I do
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: need a sheet. I'm gonna read. I'm gonna read Paul
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: He's picks first, just to put him in a little
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: bit of a disadvantage. Paul goes with Cincinnati both ways. Um, great,
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: great matchup, interesting matchup, kind of the old school ground
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: and pound physical Titans. Derrick Henry supposedly back. Is he ready?
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Is gonna be ready? He's gonna be it sounds active
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: for this. Get a big smile on his face when
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: they asked him. So it seems like he's gonna He's
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: gonna give her a King Henry. But that is the question.
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: How ready to see? How healthy are the Titans overall?
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: Or are they ready to just kick it in and
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: look like a number one seed? After the after was
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: the number? I'm sorry. Three and a half Titans. Titans
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: by three and a half. And then Cincinnati of course,
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Jamar Chase, Joe Burrow. They look pretty good last week
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: hanging on against the Raiders. I'm tough on this one.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: I really do like Tennessee. You gotta like what Cincinnati
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: has on offense, though, I'm gonna go Tennessee both ways. Okay,
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna split the difference. I'm just gonna give the
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: Titans the the home benefit of the doubt and the
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: more experienced benefit because they've been in this position before,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: They've been to an AFC championship under Vrabel. I am
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: going to take them to win, but I'm going to
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: take the hook hoof and say it's a close one.
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: I think the Bengals do make it a game. This
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: could be a sneaky one of the best games of
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: the weekend, maybe the best game of the weekend. Uh yeah,
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: I will. Even though Henry looks like he's coming back,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: I don't think that makes much of a difference. Besides
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: the fact that it's just first game back from just
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: spill my water back, the first game back from the
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: long layover. The Titans running game was pretty good without him.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: I mean, was here in Foxborough. Yeah, they built up
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: a culture running, so I'm not sure that his return
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: is that big a difference. However, I just hate the
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Bengals so much. I'm picking the Titans hate Wick, but
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: not Cover. Yeah, it's a hate pick. So I'm gonna
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: go with the Titans to win, but not Cover. Right,
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: police stands alone there on the pick picking Cincinnati. That's
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: a brave pick. I mean I almost thought I'm about
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: doing that myself. It's to two different, two very different styles. Yeah,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: and are the Bengals ready for that? You know? They
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: they just got through an emotional win at home, their
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: first playoff win. And but this thirty years Titan team
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: kind of like the twenty fifteen Patriots, where a bunch
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: of injuries and then you're like, can it all come
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: back together in the last suddenly? And you know, you know,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: forget about the inadvertent whistle diversity in the Bengals game.
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: But didn't it seem like the Bengals did make a
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: lot of mistakes in that game? Yeah? Yeah, they weren't.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't It wasn't the best played game. No,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: it wasn't, you know it. But I just wonder if,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: like the Bengals are kind of like the Titans were
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: back in twenty nineteen, where they got through that first
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: game here in Foxboro and then they they you know,
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: they snowball. Yeah they did it the next week. Yeah,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: they found their way. I don't know, but that's why
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: I'm giving them a little bit of a chance in
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: this game. All right, Next up is Saturday Night, eight fifteen,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: the forty nine ers traveled to Lambo Field Packers buy
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: five and a half and Paul takes Green Bay to win,
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: but he's got San Francisco with those five and a
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: half points. Uh So, Jimmy G travels to aa Ron
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Rogers up there. Um, I think green Bay again, I
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: don't know how exactly good they are, but I think
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: they're good enough to to beat San Francisco, who I
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: do have a lot of respect for what they're doing
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: with debo and how the offense is going. I'm gonna
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna do the same as Paul did, though I'm
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: gonna take Green Bay to win. I think it's a
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: close one that I'll take San Francisco with the points. Yeah.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: The playoffs to me are kind of like the first
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: couple of weeks of the regular season, where you kind
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: of get blinded by something you see in the first game,
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: and then in the second week you pick something. That's
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: why it's so tough picking in the second week of
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: the season. The playoffs are kind of like that too,
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: where like in the first week wildcard round, you sometimes get, um,
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: you know, these performances that make you think oh when
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: like when Indie didn't punt and then they came to
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: know England right like that was like they haven't punted,
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: they scored three points, like just random weird stuff like that.
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: And I think the Niners are going up against a
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: Dallas team that I think it's in their head now
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: with the with the playoffs and how they haven't been
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: able to do it in so long. And in Lambeaux,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: the temperature, the weather is going to be a factor there.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Packers used to that, Jimmy, I love you mean it,
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: but go pack go both ways? Got it? Uh? Aaron
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: Rodgers is oh and three career against San Francisco in
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: the postseason. That's a good stat that's a good stat However,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: I think you know, remember in was it oh oh eight, Well,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: I forget what year was the Patriots run him oh seven?
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: The Patriots on a mission. They were just gonna you know,
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: they were pissed off flake Gate the whole thing, and
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: Brady was pissed off. And then after I mean into
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: flake Gate, Brady was pissed off and came back and
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl. I think Aaron Rodgers has a
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: similar chip on his shoulder, right, think about COVID. Yeah,
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: about COVID and everything else and the team itself. I
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: think he just wants to show everybody that, you know, now,
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: can he do it? I don't know, but I don't
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: think he. I think they win and I think they cover.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: Plus he was mad about not getting the Jeopardy gig,
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: so yeah, everything and the world's against him. So I
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: think I think that he's got something in his head
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: to approve, and I think he does it. But you know,
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: it's not just him. We'll see both ways, pack both ways, Okay, Actress,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: I'm rich. Everything depends me. Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, three o'clock. Um,
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: the Rams at the Buccaneers. Tom Brady is fourteen and
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: two in the divisional round. Oh boy, what do we got?
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: What's the line there? Bok Tampa Bay minus three and
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Paul is going Rams both ways, little voters, guy boy, Maddie,
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: Maddie Stafford. I mean it was a I mean, I
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: guess it wasn't really a close game against Tampa Bay
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: earlier in the season for the Rams at the Rams. Uh,
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: It's just it's too hard for me to pick against
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: Tom Brady and he's got gronk um I think the
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: Rams certainly have the talent to kind of get over
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: the hump, but I think it's Tom Brady and I
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: can't pick against some subb going Tampa Bay. Both ways,
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: I'm going to agree with Paul that the Rams win
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: this game because it is so hard for a team
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: to repeat in this league, and the Rams are on
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: a quest to do something the Bucks did last year,
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: which is win the Super Bowl in their own building.
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: I don't know if that's necessarily going to happen, but
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: they take a step closer this week by making Brady
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: fourteen and three in the Divisional round. Rams win this game.
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: Does Brady retire at the end of it? No, that's
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: a big question. Yeah, both ways, Rams well, because they're underdogs,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: so yeah, yeah. A lot of people are saying win
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: or lose this season, that this Brady might Where is
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: this coming from all of a sudden, you know, fifteen
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: I know, I saw the Wickershan thing, and then I
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: saw an article today it was like former teammates are
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: saying that he concurred they might he might retire, and like,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: who are these former teams? It was like forty A Ninkovic.
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: So then I was like, mm yeah, these guys aren't.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: These guys aren't like they're not in the loop with
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: with Brady. It's like, well, yeah, sure it makes sense.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: I mean he's forty five. Like, but but here's the thing, Okay,
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: you want so Brady, we all believe that he's you know,
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: concerned with his business and you know the fact that
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: he's you know, as at the age is it's good
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: for him to show that his TV twelve method works.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: What's what's better for that narrative that he quits after
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: this year and says I could have played more, or
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: he gets to forty five and then and then it
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: shows that that's it. If he quits now, who knows
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: how long he could have played. Yeah, I mean it's
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: a good point because it's amazing that he's played as
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: long as he has. But I still think if he
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: came back and had a year where he started to
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: look his age, that people would do the sea thing
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: to you know, to some extent of that. But he
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: can turn around and be like like, looky, yeah, but
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: did you see him in that last year He's like
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: he looked like he was fifty. What is he doing
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: it now? Because he truly still loves it or is
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: he doing it now just to show everyone how long
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: he can play? And if I think it's the ladder,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: I think he might walk away to get away from
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: I'm sure look at you know, Tampa Bay and he's
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: winning and all that, but there's a lot of nonsense
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: going on down there. Yeah, I don't know, if like
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: sick of the sick of the service? Yeah maybe so,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: I don't know. Anyway, it's my turn. Yeah, I uh,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: I've gone back and forth in this game, but I'm
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: with Paul. I think the Rams have played Tampa Bay
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: pretty tough. Uh, and I think they they're kind of
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: finding their way too. Wow. You know, they've come on offensively.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: I think Stafford, as long as he plays a clean game,
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: I think they win this, uh, this game. Who would
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: have thought that the guy who hates Brady if be
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: the only one that picks him in this in this one? Well,
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: maybe I'm maybe I'm using Paul's reverse like hear I
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: think about that. Yeah, and I love Brady. I'm gonna
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: be rooting for Brady, but I think the Rams are
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: gonna win this. You got them both ways, Freddy, Well, yeah,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: they were underdogs all right. So now we're gonna skip
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: Oh no, no ah, all right, yeah too soon. Sunday
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: Game of the Weekend, Sunday evening, six thirty, The Bills
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: at the Chiefs by two and a hay oh very
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: very very small, very small. Um, so lots to lots
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: to unpack on this one. I mean, Kansas City feels
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: like they're back. I still think that they have some
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: some wholesome issues, but they're a real good team. Not
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: really challenged last week against Pittsburgh, um Buffalo. I mean,
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: for Patrea fans, it's like who who can anyone beat
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: the Bill? Like you don't know if anyone can even
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: slow down Josh Allen. So with that said, I think
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: now is the time for the Bills. I think they
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: knock off Kansas City, put the two time defending AFC
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: champions to bed. They expose Kansas City's flaws, and I
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: think Josh Allen keeps the train rolling. It really helps
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: them that Buffalo went this year already to head and
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: won a game there and won a game pretty convincingly.
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: Now the Chiefs are playing way way better than they
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: were back then. Um, but I think this is going
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: to be a classic back and forth, back and forth
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: and whoever has the ball last kind of thing, and
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: I think the Bills have the ball last, and they
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: pull up the upset at Arrowhead yet again in advance.
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: I got them. I got the Bills, and Paul Paul
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: was both buff both ways too, Freddie, break the tie.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: Is this the AFC championship in that the winner of
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: this game goes through the Super Bowl? Probably? I mean maybe,
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: But I mean Tennessee smacked Buffalo, you know, so I
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: don't know it's a It's a good question, but I
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: don't I don't think it's I don't think it's a
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: lock that that either of those teams. But I guess
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: we gotta see. We gotta see Tennessee do it again.
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: I mean, f both these teams, I have to pick one.
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go with the Chiefs at home. Um
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: to have an answer. The Chiefs have that speed up front,
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: you know, that's where they've improved on defense this year.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Is is their speed. And then they've got Matthew in
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: the back. I think they've got the speed on defense
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: to do what's necessary to limit the Bills. So I'm
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: gonna go with the Chiefs here. Both ways, Yeah, I
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: think Chris Jones too. I mean, he just a guy
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: up front thing. Yeah, just destroy the pocket and you know,
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: you don't have to worry about Chris don't don't don't
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: tackle him, just keep him there. Yeah like he didin't
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: gonna have to worry about that. He'll go get him right. So, yeah,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: this is gonna be an exciting weekend of football. I
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: think all these games are gonna be pretty good. I
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: don't think we're gonna see blowouts like we did last weekend.
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: I hope not. No, this is gonna be some good football,
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: So settle in. Yeah. The one that I think could
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: get out of hand is the Packers in Yeah. Maybe. Yeah.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: You know, if the Packets up four teamed up, then
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: I think Jimmy will fold. You know, I really his
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: mental I worry about. Well. I mean he stepped up
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: last week though on the road, won the game, but
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: it was precarious at times. Yeah, yeah, I know. I
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: think he's at least earned himself a starting job next
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: year somewhere probably, Oh yeah, plenty things. I get a
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: quarterback though, somebody, Oh yeah, yeah, all right, wow, listen,
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: that's gonna be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: Everybody enjoy the divisional round this weekend. Like Eric said,
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: great weekend of football and we will see you next Tuesday.
