- 0:00Speaker 1: On to new fallout now from Donald Trump's contentious Oval
- 0:03Speaker 1: Office meeting with South Africa's president earlier this week. During
- 0:07Speaker 1: that meeting, President Trump held up some printouts of news
- 0:10Speaker 1: articles and images that he claimed were evidence of a
- 0:14Speaker 1: genocide against white South Africans, well as Reuter's reports. One
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the images is actually from Reuter's video of a
- 0:22Speaker 1: mass burial in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It does
- 0:26Speaker 1: not depict that white farmers in South Africa, as mister
- 0:30Speaker 1: Trump and the White House claimed in front of the
- 0:33Speaker 1: South African President and in front of journalists in the
- 0:36Speaker 1: White House for more. Now, let's go to Cina. Ance
- 0:39Speaker 1: Larry Medoo joining us from Narobi in Kenya. This Congo confusion, Larry,
- 0:45Speaker 1: how are people where you are reacting to it?
- 0:49Speaker 2: It is shocking to a lot of people because, as
- 0:53Speaker 2: I said after that meeting, based on my own reporting
- 0:56Speaker 2: in this region and especially from fifteen years in South Africa,
- 0:59Speaker 2: a lot of what President Trump used to justify this
- 1:03Speaker 2: persecution and murders of white farmers was just untrue. And
- 1:06Speaker 2: this is another evidence. When I saw him hold up
- 1:08Speaker 2: that picture, I thought it looked familiar. We now know
- 1:10Speaker 2: and Routers is confirming that this picture of body bags
- 1:15Speaker 2: is not from South Africa. It's actually from the Democratic
- 1:18Speaker 2: Republic of Congo. It's from a mess burial from a
- 1:22Speaker 2: mass burial in Goma and the Democratic Republic of Congo
- 1:25Speaker 2: on February third, and the Routers video journalist Jaffar al Catanti,
- 1:29Speaker 2: who took that video, was surprised to see the President
- 1:31Speaker 2: hold up that picture. It's a screen grab that links
- 1:35Speaker 2: to a Routers video from that day. It follows a
- 1:38Speaker 2: big assault on that Goma city in the eastern DRC
- 1:43Speaker 2: by rebels named the M twenty three and that was
- 1:46Speaker 2: the effect. A lot of people were killed on that
- 1:49Speaker 2: day the days before, and this was a mess burial
- 1:51Speaker 2: that was carried out by the International Committee of the
- 1:54Speaker 2: Red Cross. And Routers what the only news organizations that
- 1:57Speaker 2: were allowed in to film that. So this picture does
- 1:59Speaker 2: not picked the deaths of white farmers in South Africa,
- 2:03Speaker 2: as President Trump led President Opposa to believe. And the
- 2:08Speaker 2: wider question the point that President Trump was trying to
- 2:10Speaker 2: make here is that lots of farmers in South Africa
- 2:13Speaker 2: are getting killed or getting executed, even though he'd used
- 2:15Speaker 2: evidence that does not support that. That picture was from
- 2:19Speaker 2: an American conservative online magazine that had talked about both Goma,
- 2:23Speaker 2: the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa, and the
- 2:26Speaker 2: South Afkan Foreign minister was on Amanpur last night and
- 2:29Speaker 2: he brought some statistics with him.
- 2:33Speaker 3: In the last four years, two hundred and twenty five
- 2:36Speaker 3: farm attucks, one hundred and one farm dwellers who are
- 2:40Speaker 3: majority Black, fifty five farm owners who are majority white.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So that is a period of four years, and that
- 2:49Speaker 3: does not represent a genocyte, but it is still unfortunate.
- 2:55Speaker 3: It should happen because any crime, it is the crime.
- 3:00Speaker 3: And that's why the President then stated that we're dealing
- 3:04Speaker 3: with the crime situation.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And that is the argument that South Africans were trying
- 3:10Speaker 2: to make the Oval office. They have a crime problem,
- 3:12Speaker 2: not a murder of farmers. In fact, farm matters. Lastly,
- 3:15Speaker 2: when we looked at it, zero point two percent of
- 3:17Speaker 2: the overal total POLO, a small percentage.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, we've been here before, Donald Trump and his press
- 3:24Speaker 1: folks using material out of context, so we can now
- 3:27Speaker 1: add South Africa to the list. Larry Madewell, thank you
- 3:30Speaker 1: so much for your reporting.
- 3:31Speaker 4: More in that contentious meeting between South African President Ramaposa
- 3:34Speaker 4: and President Trump from yesterday afternoon, You'll remember, the White
- 3:37Speaker 4: House played a video purporting to back up claims that
- 3:40Speaker 4: afric connors in South Africa are victims of genocide. Mister
- 3:43Speaker 4: Trump showed a video of crosses lining the side of
- 3:45Speaker 4: a road, claiming it was a burial site of murdered
- 3:48Speaker 4: white farmers. It wasn't. Today, White House Press Secretary Carolyn
- 3:51Speaker 4: Levitt was pressed about it. Pressed about the video by
- 3:54Speaker 4: NBC reporter Yamisha El Sendor, the.
- 3:58Speaker 5: President showed a video that he said it showed more
- 4:00Speaker 5: than a thousand burial sites of white South Africans.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He said, we're murdered.
- 4:05Speaker 5: We know that that was not true and that the
- 4:07Speaker 5: video wasn't doing that. So I wonder why did the
- 4:09Speaker 5: President choose to show that It's not true the video
- 4:12Speaker 5: was showing a burial site. It is unsubstantiated that that's
- 4:15Speaker 5: the case. No, it's it is.
- 4:16Speaker 6: True that that video showed the crosses. That represents what
- 4:20Speaker 6: the President claimed. The video showed images of crosses in
- 4:26Speaker 6: South Africa about white farmers who have been killed and
- 4:31Speaker 6: politically persecuted because of the color of their skin, and
- 4:35Speaker 6: those crosses aren't representing their lives. Those crosses are representing
- 4:39Speaker 6: their lives and the fact that they are now dead
- 4:41Speaker 6: and their government did nothing about it. Are you disputing
- 4:45Speaker 6: that there's.
- 4:45Speaker 5: No fact that the video showed what the President claimed
- 4:48Speaker 5: it showed because it did not show that. But even more,
- 4:50Speaker 5: what I'm asking is who.
- 4:51Speaker 6: Did show that the white cross is representing people who
- 4:54Speaker 6: have perished because of racial persecution?
- 4:56Speaker 5: The videos that the president shows, and what protocols are
- 4:59Speaker 5: in when there's unsubstantiated information being put out for the
- 5:03Speaker 5: world and more leadership.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Give me what's unsubstantiated about the video? The video shows
- 5:07Speaker 6: crosses that represent the dead bodies of people who were
- 5:11Speaker 6: racially persecuted by their government. In fact, the Associated Press,
- 5:15Speaker 6: of all places, has a picture of that very monument.
- 5:18Speaker 6: In the caption from the Associated Press is each cross
- 5:21Speaker 6: marks a white farmer who has been killed in a
- 5:24Speaker 6: farm murder. So it is substantiated. It's not just by
- 5:27Speaker 6: that video and the physical evidence that everybody saw on
- 5:30Speaker 6: display in the Oval office, but also by another outlet
- 5:32Speaker 6: in this from the Associated Press. So you should take
- 5:34Speaker 6: it up with them if you believe the claim is unsubstantiated.
- 5:37Speaker 6: And that's a ridiculous line of questioning.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Well, give it them, honest, it's not what President Trump
- 5:42Speaker 4: said yesterday. Let's listen to what he actually said.
- 5:46Speaker 7: These are burial sites right here, burial sites over a
- 5:53Speaker 7: thousand of white farmers, and those cars are lined up
- 6:00Speaker 7: pay love on a Sunday morning. Each one of those
- 6:03Speaker 7: white things you see is across and there's approximately a
- 6:10Speaker 7: thousand of them. They're all white farmers, the family of
- 6:13Speaker 7: white farmers, and those guys aren't driving to stop there
- 6:18Speaker 7: to pay respects to their family member who's killed. And
- 6:23Speaker 7: it's a terrible sight. I've never seen anything like it.
- 6:26Speaker 7: Those people are all killed.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Have they told you where that is, mister president.
- 6:32Speaker 3: No, I'd like to know where that is, because this
- 6:35Speaker 3: I've never seen.
- 6:38Speaker 7: But okay, I mean it's in South Africa.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Well, the South African president there at the end asking
- 6:44Speaker 4: where the burial site is because he'd never seen it.
- 6:47Speaker 4: It's because it does not exist. It's not a burial ground.
- 6:50Speaker 4: It's video from five years ago, a visual created after
- 6:53Speaker 4: a white farming couple was robbed and murdered. That was
- 6:56Speaker 4: a tragedy, as is any murder, and the people actually
- 6:58Speaker 4: who killed them were can of it. It was not ignored.
- 7:02Speaker 4: The killing shook the African or community, and a neighbor
- 7:04Speaker 4: of the couple erected the crosses to honor them and
- 7:06Speaker 4: other farmers who had been killed across South Africa. It's
- 7:09Speaker 4: not a burial site, he told the BBC today. The
- 7:12Speaker 4: person who made this memorial, it was a memorial. It
- 7:15Speaker 4: was not a permanent memorial that was erected. It was
- 7:18Speaker 4: a temporary memorial. Now, in addition to the claim of
- 7:20Speaker 4: a burial ground, there was an article that President Trump
- 7:22Speaker 4: held up as further proof of genocide of white farmers
- 7:26Speaker 4: in South Africa.
- 7:29Speaker 7: These are all white farmers that.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Are being buried.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Well, we tracked down the source of the image in
- 7:36Speaker 4: that article and it's actually not from South Africa. It
- 7:39Speaker 4: is a screen grab of Reuter's video from Goma in
- 7:42Speaker 4: the Democratic Republic of Congo and was from February when
- 7:45Speaker 4: over two thousand people were killed in clashes between the
- 7:48Speaker 4: government and a rebel group. Now, the sick irony is
- 7:51Speaker 4: that none of the black people fleeing violence or persecution Indorce,
- 7:55Speaker 4: Congo or anywhere else in Africa would be allowed into
- 7:58Speaker 4: the United States. Right now, I was refugees only white Afrikaners,
- 8:03Speaker 4: based on claims of a genocide which is not actually occurring,
