Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode - 762 Mike of Concept Cafes on His Love of Metal and Coffee
Transcript
- 0:00You know, in the 60s they got it right with the Beatniks and Bob
- 0:03Dylan and reading poetry and coffee houses and political
- 0:07activism. They got it right.
- 0:09The 90s, they got it right with the coffee houses where you're
- 0:12seeing artists, you know, like famously Jewel making a name for
- 0:15herself just playing out of coffee houses.
- 0:18And you really saw that. So we're kind of like, that's
- 0:20missing today. And when we got into this, we
- 0:23said that's our mission is to kind of bring that back and
- 0:26create something. So it's like, you know, you
- 0:29don't have to walk into Starbucks and just feel like
- 0:31it's just a cup of coffee, but we're going to create that
- 0:33experience and be like, no, this is Cannibal Corpse coffee.
- 0:36This aligns with me. This makes me feel good.
- 0:40Why not? Let's have some fun.
- 0:48Hat Twins for the day. What's up everybody?
- 0:51It's Kefi at ghostcoldman.com. I'm super stoked to be joined by
- 0:55Mike from concept cafes. You know, their coffees.
- 0:59Awesome stuff happening all the time.
- 1:00Mike, how the hell are you, man? Hey man, thanks for having me
- 1:04doing doing great man. Just coming off Milwaukee Metal
- 1:07Fest this past weekend. Oh, that must have been amazing.
- 1:10The lineup was sick. We're big fans of what they're
- 1:12doing out there. I went once to the OG Milwaukee
- 1:15Metal Fest and then that original founder Jack Koscheck
- 1:19tried to do some events in the East Coast, which I I attended
- 1:22and played. So big fans of Josh the bringing
- 1:25it back and the whole team over there and I saw all the photos.
- 1:28You had so much fun. A lot of people were stoked to
- 1:31get to meet you and probably talk to you about all this
- 1:33coffee. Yeah, I know it's, it was really
- 1:36great. Most fan friendly festival we've
- 1:41ever been to. It's our first time actually
- 1:43going to it and going in as a, you know, one of the big
- 1:46sponsors and vendors was awesome.
- 1:49Just fans. I I couldn't ask for a better
- 1:51fan friendly environment. And that's what we're all about,
- 1:54you know, with concept cafes is, you know, the fan experience,
- 1:57immersive fan experience. It was great.
- 1:59I mean, we had Guardsa with Suicide Silence out there, came
- 2:02by, you know, showed off his barista skills for a few minutes
- 2:06there at the booth, and then, you know, we had Guare out on
- 2:10Sunday. So, I mean, dude, it was
- 2:12awesome. Right on.
- 2:13I got to meet Garza back in the day and he's just a sweetheart
- 2:16of a guy could not all his success could not happen to a
- 2:19better person and he's got actually as a person that
- 2:23interviews lots of people, he's quite good at it.
- 2:25He knows when to listen. He probably doesn't over talk as
- 2:29much as me. He's very well spoken.
- 2:31He's super cool. I'm so happy for him and you.
- 2:34And just out of curiosity, just let's, let's shine a little
- 2:36light on Milwaukee Metal Fest for a second as a vendor, 'cause
- 2:40you've done events and, and this is sort of, there's kind of a
- 2:42trade business to business and business to consumer side with
- 2:46like coffee festivals and coffee fairs.
- 2:49And so how does Milwaukee Metalfest experience as a vendor
- 2:52compared to other conventions and fests you've done and cons?
- 2:56It's great. It's one of our most successful
- 3:00events as a vendor that we've done so far.
- 3:03And you know, we've run the gambit of doing, you know, the
- 3:06hora cons, the oddity cons and, you know, different music cons
- 3:09and whatnot. And this is our first one we've
- 3:11really done. It is just strictly, it's not
- 3:15horror and metal, I mean, or anything like that.
- 3:17I mean, it is just straight up, you know, you know, extreme
- 3:20metal, which is what we went into what we thought was going
- 3:24to be really interesting to see the reception.
- 3:25The reception was great. Something we always can tell by
- 3:29the first day whether we're going to sit there and go, hey,
- 3:32we're coming back next year. And like, you know, Friday
- 3:34afternoon we're like, yeah, we're definitely doing this, you
- 3:37know, next year. And again, it matches our kind
- 3:41of mission of providing that, you know, just the best fan
- 3:44experience as possible. We get really creative when we
- 3:47do things like that. So yeah, that's for us.
- 3:51It's been great. And it's something we look
- 3:53forward to. Jasta and the team really great.
- 3:56And it's just look forward to something that we think we can
- 3:58build on every single year. So it's exciting to see, you
- 4:02know, where we're going to be, you know, next year and three to
- 4:04five years down the road, you know, with Milwaukee Metal Fest.
- 4:07Amazing and just has done a great job with everything and
- 4:10now he's got summer slaughter. Perfect.
- 4:12Bring back all let's get all the things back.
- 4:14I'm still I'm still waiting for the next mayhem fest also, and
- 4:18maybe it can grow into a tour again, but probably not.
- 4:21So metal and coffee, man, like this is your brand.
- 4:24This is your trade. Obviously you love the music.
- 4:26And before we talk about your musical taste, coffee, like what
- 4:29led you here? How did you want to first make
- 4:31your own coffee and then like, oh, branded metal coffees?
- 4:35How do we get here? Yeah, well, the story starts
- 4:37starts back in with one of my business partners who we were
- 4:41actually in business together more in the financial world.
- 4:44And I know I look like, you know, got a beard and obituary
- 4:47hat on, really look like the financial guy.
- 4:50But, you know, that's, you know, reality.
- 4:52And she split off with the company, wanted to go off and do
- 4:55something else and found a love for coffee and came back a
- 4:59couple years later and said, you know, you know, Mike, what do
- 5:02you think of this? You know, and, you know, again,
- 5:03we've been, you know, friends for, you know, a lifetime.
- 5:06And I was like, hey, and I took a look at it.
- 5:08I was like, I think there's something here.
- 5:10And specifically I was very interested in the white label on
- 5:13the private label market saying, hey, man, there's something
- 5:16here, especially with beer coming off some of its worst
- 5:18performances and more younger kids.
- 5:21You know, I don't know if it's like the same or, you know, out
- 5:24in San Francisco, but I mean, here in Orlando, FL, I mean,
- 5:27there's a cobba bar and a boba tea bar.
- 5:29And then, you know, going up on every corner, the kids are NA,
- 5:34we're seeing a lot of the older metalhead crowd NA.
- 5:37And, and I just took a look at that and I said, you know what?
- 5:39I think there is an opportunity here where the craft coffee
- 5:43world is going to become the next craft beer world in the
- 5:47next few years. And it's just going to like
- 5:50start to explode and you're going to see that really explode
- 5:52in the private label market. So I I jumped in really like
- 5:552018 and we tried out a lot of stuff locally, working some
- 6:00conventions, creating private labels for that, anything from,
- 6:05you know, burlesque troops, creating private label for that
- 6:08and some city stuff. We did community stuff and said,
- 6:12yeah, this kind of works. You know, like, so why not go
- 6:15to, you know, the bigger stage with stuff that we really love,
- 6:18which is, you know, you know, horror movies, heavy metal music
- 6:22and get get into that. And we didn't know what was out
- 6:28there until we started really researching it.
- 6:30And it's kind of like on a daily basis, we discover we're kind of
- 6:33like Andy, like for example, Testament, we had no idea they
- 6:37had a coffee out out before us. I've never never understood or
- 6:40sorry, never knew that Dave Mustaine had a coffee at one
- 6:43point or even like a lot of these bands.
- 6:46And we took a look at it saying, you know, what can we do and
- 6:49what can we do better? And we really started focusing
- 6:53on, you know, going back to what we appreciated, you know, you
- 6:57know, growing up, you know, when we were in middle school and
- 7:00what not, you know, and breaking open that first, you know,
- 7:02whether it's, you know, your first live after death that, you
- 7:05know, record inlay where you're like, Oh my God, this is an
- 7:07amazing, amazing experience. Let me memorize the lyrics.
- 7:10Listen to this thing on auto reverse.
- 7:12I mean, high speed dub it for my friends and just really get into
- 7:15the artwork, drawing it on my, you know, my Trapper Keeper and
- 7:18all that crap. And, you know, we're like, we
- 7:21really want to bring that back to the coffee world because the
- 7:25coffee world, I mean, it's 2.25 billion cups served around the
- 7:30world a day. And it's a something it's it's
- 7:34an everyday thing. It's one of the most traded
- 7:36commodities in the world and it's marketed to such this like
- 7:41kind of taupe HomeGoods store vibe, which is like really 1%.
- 7:45And we're kind of going, you know, in the 60s they got it
- 7:48right with the Beatniks and Bob Dylan and, you know, and, you
- 7:51know, reading poetry and coffee houses and political activism.
- 7:55They got it right. The 90s, they got it right with
- 7:59the coffee houses where you're seeing artists, you know, like,
- 8:01you know, famously Jewel making a name for herself just playing
- 8:05out of coffee houses. And you really, we saw that.
- 8:08So we're kind of like that's missing today.
- 8:10And when we got into this, we said that's our mission is to
- 8:13kind of bring that back and create something.
- 8:16So it's like, you know, you don't have to walk into
- 8:18Starbucks and just feel like it's just a cup of coffee, but
- 8:21we're going to create that experience and be like, no, this
- 8:24is Cannibal Corpse coffee. This aligns with me.
- 8:27This makes me feel good. Why not?
- 8:29So that's really how it all got started.
- 8:32And then, you know, Cannibal was the first one we worked on and
- 8:36that kind of started off. A funny story behind that was I
- 8:40got into kind of like an argument with somebody and you
- 8:42know, about a coffee venture. We were thinking about going
- 8:45down and it didn't pan out, you know, And then, you know, you
- 8:47get kind of angry with yourself inside.
- 8:49And I said, you know what, I'm going to make a bet with myself.
- 8:52I'm going to go out and create the most over the top, you know,
- 8:56death metal coffee possible. You know, I just want to shock
- 9:00the world at this point. Who better not Hannibal Corpse,
- 9:03obviously. You know, let's get banned in
- 9:05Germany and get banned on Australia on a coffee.
- 9:08So reached. Out.
- 9:10Yeah, yeah, exactly. So we reached out to Paul
- 9:12Mazurk. He really liked the idea.
- 9:14We know we had some basic ideas, got together with Vince, put
- 9:18together the artwork, and we were kind of like, we don't know
- 9:21if this is going to work. Halloween back in 2022, I
- 9:25believe it was, We launched. Nobody knew we were like, this
- 9:28is going to be a flopper. It's going to be a success.
- 9:30We started seeing the orders coming in, you know, people
- 9:33liking the IG post and it was just one after another.
- 9:36And we're like, people want to see a disemboweled cannibal
- 9:39zombie on the front of a coffee bag.
- 9:40And that's all she wrote. And that's, you know, that
- 9:43that's the story from there. And we didn't want to be a 1
- 9:45trick pony. So we just, you know, said, hey,
- 9:47after that, what's the next thing we can do?
- 9:49Right on I so many things to unpack, but I wanted to share my
- 9:53Cannibal Corpse coffee story about the metal Blade museum.
- 9:57So folks may not know don't know when if you're a visitor to
- 9:59Vegas or not. I was in Vegas in March for
- 10:02Danzig and down who you just saw in Milwaukee and there's a thing
- 10:06called the metal Blade museum. It may not be permanent.
- 10:08There's, you know, is always a possibility they'll move it
- 10:11somewhere else or someone will acquire what they have.
- 10:14But the head of Metal Blade Records, Brian Slagle, has
- 10:16accumulated a lifetime of stuff. Some stuff was lost over the
- 10:20years and some stuff has come to him from bands and fans.
- 10:23And there's, as you would imagine, the pinnacle band on
- 10:26the Metal Blade label is Cannibal Corpse.
- 10:29Everybody knows the best selling band in death metal more or less
- 10:32historically in the physical era of record sales.
- 10:36And I happen to see a good old bag of the Calm Corpse coffee
- 10:41right there in on top of a display case in an I view.
- 10:45And I'm not that tall. So if I saw it, people taller
- 10:48than, you know, people who are not the size of a Hobbit like me
- 10:51will see shit, see this thing and be like, oh shit, Calm
- 10:55Corpse has a coffee. And it's amazing.
- 10:56By the way, like just to let you know, this is my second bag that
- 10:59I actually bought 1 after I used up the one you sent me as a gift
- 11:02very kindly. So just super cool to see it get
- 11:05prominence there. And there's so much.
- 11:08I urge everybody. It's 20 bucks.
- 11:10Go to the Metal Blade Museum once in a while.
- 11:12Brian personally will walk you through and curate it for you.
- 11:15But the dude who does it for them is great.
- 11:17I had an amazing time. There will be some content
- 11:19coming eventually around that when I get around to it.
- 11:22But for you personally, just your personal like coffee
- 11:25tastes, what kind of coffee did you drink before you started
- 11:28making these coffees? Starbucks.
- 11:30Yeah, it's, I mean, it's a good, but you know, a Pike, a Pike
- 11:34roast is good for you. I knew nothing about coffee
- 11:38getting into it. My partner knew a lot and it was
- 11:42just trial by error, you know what I liked and you know, kind
- 11:46of learning from there and a lot of it's luck.
- 11:49I mean, I think going in with kind of a blind taste, for lack
- 11:53of a better term, has helped us out because I'm just going in
- 11:56and, you know, with the artist when we collab on these and
- 11:59saying, hey, we think this idea will work, you know, what do you
- 12:02think? I think?
- 12:03And generally we get it right, you know, pretty quickly.
- 12:06And we've been, you know, you know, knock on wood, but, you
- 12:08know, really good about that so far.
- 12:10But I mean, I went in as a regular coffee drinker, you
- 12:13know, Starbucks, Green Mountain, whatever you're getting off the
- 12:16supermarket shelf or straight through the drive thru gas
- 12:18station. I had no idea.
- 12:20And I guess the best experience, I mean, I'm a vegetarian myself,
- 12:24but you know, at one point in my life, you know, ate meat.
- 12:27But, you know, I bet the, the best analogy I've ever heard of
- 12:31is, you know, you walk into the Outback and you're getting the,
- 12:35you know, 999, you know, special and you think it's, you know, a
- 12:38good steak. And then you have this
- 12:41experience where you go to, you know, something like a Ruth
- 12:44Chris or a Don Shula or any number of, you know, high end
- 12:47steakhouses and you go, wow, I, I couldn't believe the
- 12:51difference was that big. And then, you know, at the end
- 12:54of it, what do you, you never want to go back Outback again
- 12:57because you're just like, there's that big of a disparity.
- 12:59But what was also interesting to me was there wasn't that big of
- 13:04disparity in cost. And to use, you know, kind of
- 13:06like a more of an automobile analogy, I said, Hey, you know,
- 13:09you know, going from a Honda Civic to a, you know, Hyundai
- 13:14Sonata is not a big price difference from, you know what I
- 13:17know. But the, the value or the
- 13:20difference in quality is like literally going from that Honda
- 13:23Civic to a Bentley. I mean, it's incredible, you
- 13:26know, you know, the difference in price being that so tiny, but
- 13:31the difference in quality being that huge.
- 13:33And that's what was really, really surprising to me in the
- 13:36beginning. Amazing, thank you for unpacking
- 13:38all that. Interestingly enough, I did not
- 13:40drink coffee until my 20s. I'm now in my 50s.
- 13:43I can't imagine a day without a cup of coffee is a sad day for
- 13:46me. And I like everything across the
- 13:48board. Fried them all.
- 13:49I've had them all. And I think similar to I think
- 13:53one of the fun aspects of this is like I think coffee fans and
- 13:56music fans are not too dissimilar.
- 13:59If you have a real deep passion and love for coffee or vinyl,
- 14:04which I also have a vinyl podcast or your whiskies coffees
- 14:07right along the same lines, it's worth having.
- 14:09It's worth having a great experience.
- 14:11It's worth having something delicious and satisfying.
- 14:14And that steak analogy was perfect because I'm also a steak
- 14:17person, even if you're not anymore and you're probably
- 14:20gonna outlive me by a lot. And but yeah, definitely.
- 14:23And no shade. Hey, listen Outback Blooming
- 14:25onion and a $20 piece of steak. Not too shabby with some shrimps
- 14:29shrimp on the Bobby. Yeah, man, super cool to hear
- 14:32about that. And I'm glad that you're so
- 14:33invested and and interested in this.
- 14:36And I know it's kind of a section that the sector that's
- 14:39always evolving to use some business speak.
- 14:41We're not going to use words like artisan and bespoke, but
- 14:43they are like very specifically crafted and tailored.
- 14:46So now I want to know when it comes to the band, just like
- 14:50bands help, you know, you know, sample and suggest things for
- 14:54their beers, alcoholic or non alcoholic, which we have a lot
- 14:57of experience with both. Like how involved are the
- 15:00artists in their coffees? Do they do they have a do they
- 15:03have a requests? Do they say, could it be like
- 15:05this? This is what I like.
- 15:06How deep do you go down that rabbit hole with them?
- 15:09Somebody asked this question the other day and I think we
- 15:12answered it in a e-mail blast that went out.
- 15:15And it's the most common question we get even at
- 15:17Milwaukee Metal Fest. How do these, you know, how do
- 15:21you get to work with these artists?
- 15:22And you know, my response was patience, patience, patience and
- 15:26persistence. And it is just due to artists
- 15:28touring schedules, you know, global doing two or three runs a
- 15:32year, recording family life, you know, and all that.
- 15:35It's it's a very small window and opportunity.
- 15:38You actually get to collab with artists and get their feedback
- 15:41and get their input. So, but we dive deep and I mean
- 15:45people, I mean, cannibal from start to finish was almost a
- 15:49year long process. I want to say it was anywhere
- 15:51between like 9 and 11 months. And we go as deep as sending
- 15:56samples out on the road. And it's kind of funny.
- 15:59We always say, you know, it's Rd. tested, roadie approved.
- 16:01It's it's true. If the road crew doesn't like
- 16:04it, then the band's not going to like it.
- 16:06Rd. crew's not happy, they're not going to drink it.
- 16:08And most importantly, the fans got to like it.
- 16:11So it's, it's really interesting like, well, we go down the
- 16:14rabbit hole with the artist trying to get it as close as
- 16:17possible to their ideal. But it's also so #2 it's got to
- 16:21match that concept. So for example, like on Cannibal
- 16:24Corpse, we all agreed, you know, working with Alex and Paul and
- 16:28all the guys, we all, we all agreed that we wanted this kind
- 16:31of feeling of, you know, it's earthy, it's dank, it's woody,
- 16:35it's cedar. Like it's like almost being
- 16:38buried and burned alive. So that it's got to match the
- 16:41concept, but it's also got to be palatable to the fans as well.
- 16:45So some artists have some pretty unique coffee tastes and you got
- 16:50to also get it right and kind of dial it back a little and say,
- 16:54hey, you know, even though you like this, we got to also make
- 16:58it so as many fans out there are going to think this is unique,
- 17:01it's cool and they are going to want to, you know, want to try
- 17:04it. So you can't get too crazy at
- 17:07some points in time with, you know, different roast levels or
- 17:09different crazy origins. And we've kind of, you know, it
- 17:13all. It all comes managed.
- 17:14So it's a very long, difficult process, and there's a lot that
- 17:19goes into it that most most people don't see.
- 17:22But I think we enjoy that process.
- 17:24It's probably very similar to going in and trying to record an
- 17:29album. I mean, like you're just doing
- 17:30edits and edits and takes and takes and, you know, you know,
- 17:33production quality on top of that.
- 17:35So yeah, like you said, you know it, you know, not in not wanting
- 17:39to use the words like craft and artisan, but at the end of the
- 17:42day we don't like to use those words either, but we use other
- 17:46words. But it really is a a craft and a
- 17:51very creative process. Right on.
- 17:52I have enjoyed all of these coffees.
- 17:54I've been fortunate enough to get to sample three of them.
- 17:57I'm drinking the Testament Brazen brand right now in my
- 18:00heavy metal shop cup mug I got in Salt Lake City.
- 18:03Shout out to them. And the nerd in me is now going
- 18:06to fully fly, so forgive me in advance.
- 18:09I work. Everybody knows I work in
- 18:11marketing and social media when I'm not doing ghost cult and
- 18:13even when I'm doing ghost cult. And so I love the branding.
- 18:17I love the, you know, how much it feels like, like the brands
- 18:20feel absolutely authentic and brilliant.
- 18:22You work with the bands very closely, but also amazing
- 18:25artists and labels. And you know, in addition to
- 18:28this, I have so many friends of mine jealous that this I had
- 18:30this they were so jealous. This coffee is my favorite so
- 18:34far. It's delicious.
- 18:35People have seen, you know, subscribers to Ghost call on
- 18:38YouTube and elsewhere have seen our ministry laughing Monkey
- 18:41Machine coffee review. So I have a bag and I want to
- 18:44talk about this Mark, this branding in this marketing.
- 18:47I know that used there was a phrase in the recent press
- 18:50release that said we want to have the same feeling as an
- 18:52opening a beautiful album, right?
- 18:54And it's all around packaging just so people can see.
- 18:56It's very distinctive. There's no mistaking it.
- 18:59Like you said, this kind of, you know, HomeGoods decor, very
- 19:03beige, a lot of beiges and earth tones and stuff.
- 19:06And it's kind of the same marketing as tea, you know, as
- 19:09supermarket tea, which is fine and I like I'll drink.
- 19:12I'm from the East Coast, so I remember Dunkin' Donuts before
- 19:16it was everywhere. It was just in the East Coast
- 19:18and just AI actually used to live in the neighborhood of the
- 19:20original Dunkin' Donuts, which is I think celebrated 75 years
- 19:24as a location, which is insane. Good for them.
- 19:26I hope you have at least as long a run and but I love this
- 19:30packaging and and just everything about it from what
- 19:32you get in the mail. I have some of the boxes behind
- 19:35me. They're beautiful.
- 19:36It's just like this kind of, you know, box set culture or record
- 19:40collector culture that will appreciate this packaging, the
- 19:44care, a sticker, you know, the confetti padding, like it's the
- 19:48labels. Everything is just so on point
- 19:52and perfect. So I wanted to talk about your
- 19:54interest in that and how you going to kind of like how you
- 19:56develop this idea, like we're going to do it.
- 19:58We're going to go all the way, not halfway, all the way with
- 20:01this. I love this summer.
- 20:02Yeah, it it generally starts as an idea or a concept we have,
- 20:08and that's why we're called concept cafes.
- 20:10And the idea of getting into this was to make it feel not, I
- 20:14don't want to say make it feel like a record, to make you make
- 20:17it feel like an LP. We wanted to really make it the
- 20:19experience to be kind of like this, you know, this extended
- 20:23play, this EP we want, but we wanted to make it really killer
- 20:26as well. One of my favorite EPS of all
- 20:28time, like probably a lot of people say this is, you know,
- 20:31the first Garage days by Metallica.
- 20:33I mean, like start to finish, great.
- 20:35And listen to that on repeat for the rest of my life on a
- 20:37deserted island. Love it.
- 20:39You know, a lot of its covers, but who cares?
- 20:43And I, you know, but it's that EP that's still synonymous with
- 20:47the band. It can hold its own.
- 20:48So we said, you know, we really wanted the copy to be able to
- 20:51sit on the record shelf, not to detract or take away from the
- 20:55body of music, but to be something there that is not just
- 20:59another piece of merge and not, you know, just another piece of
- 21:02swag or a collectible. We wanted really this to have
- 21:05something to it. So when we got into it, we said,
- 21:07you know, we got to to think of this kind of like a record, you
- 21:10know, working with the artist and come up with these concepts
- 21:13and make sure not only coffee matches, but you know, the
- 21:15packaging as well. And we didn't want to miss out
- 21:18on any detail. We didn't want to put, you know,
- 21:21the black bag and sacrifice, you know, money.
- 21:24I mean, it cost money to do this, you know, and so we really
- 21:27wanted to put all the effort in, but we didn't just want to put a
- 21:29sticker on the bag. We thought we were going to be
- 21:31short changing the artists of saying like we got those amazing
- 21:34coffee, but it's not it's not in its final packaging, It's not
- 21:37the art. So we really, since we did
- 21:40cannibal, which is really the first one we did, we've kind of
- 21:43like evolved and kind of figured things out.
- 21:45And you know, one of the traits, as you can see, is the evolution
- 21:51of the side paneling. And we said, you know, like when
- 21:53you go buy a regular bag of coffee, the side panel, it was
- 21:56either nutritional info or it's just text and it's just a lot of
- 21:59us is useless jargon at the end of the day, I'm telling you, you
- 22:02know how wonderful the brand is. We are like, let's make the
- 22:05artwork insane on the side and let's keep evolving it.
- 22:09So you know, that turned into like on Monkey machine, how do
- 22:12we Pierce barbell piercings on the side of the bag?
- 22:16How do we make that illusion? That's kind of cool on Garza's,
- 22:19how do we make a guitar fret board on the side of a
- 22:22packaging? And you know, it's stuff like
- 22:24that. And then most people don't know
- 22:27until they actually look at the bottom of the packaging.
- 22:31And I got to throw a shout out to Black Rifle Coffee Company
- 22:34for turning us on to this. I picked up a, a pack of Black
- 22:38Rifle one day at the supermarket.
- 22:40I was just like, what's on the bottom?
- 22:41And it basically said this space is blank because nobody looks at
- 22:45it. And I was like, huh, Came back
- 22:47to the shop with the idea of the warehouse with the idea of
- 22:50saying like, hey, we got to put something crazy on the bottom of
- 22:53every bag we come out with. And that's been like one of our
- 22:56signatures that we do. So when you look at the bottom,
- 22:58it's like this extra surprise. Usually it's something to do
- 23:01with the band, but not directly with the concept in a lot of
- 23:04cases, like cannibal bloody coffee rings on the bottom
- 23:07there, you know, the kids with the baboon, you know, faces
- 23:10looking, you know, shit. Ice cream for Ministry, of
- 23:12course. And that's been, and we're
- 23:15continuing to evolve like into the tortens.
- 23:18We did a dying fetus. We've done the testament us,
- 23:21we've done that. And we're always tell anybody
- 23:25yet I can't tell you guys yet what's coming out.
- 23:29But now we're getting into that phase of taking seeing really
- 23:33beyond the coffee packaging and turning it into something
- 23:37completely else. And that's about all I can say
- 23:41about that. But you're going to be like,
- 23:42this doesn't even look like a coffee package anymore.
- 23:44So we're at that state. So it becomes a continuing
- 23:47evolution of getting it right. And if people think, you know,
- 23:51we just sit down and, you know, scratched this up overnight,
- 23:54it's far from. It starts with concepts, ideas
- 23:58going back and forth, renderings, sketches, revisions
- 24:02after revisions till everything's perfect.
- 24:04And we feel comfortable putting it out there.
- 24:07Artists feel comfortable putting it out there and knowing that we
- 24:10can get behind this and support this.
- 24:12And a lot of the ideas and concepts we focus on aren't
- 24:16narrowed down there. It's never about like an album
- 24:18they've put out. It's never about a song that
- 24:21they've put out or anything like that.
- 24:22There's always is this bigger almost existential idea to it,
- 24:27you know, especially with, you know, laughing monkey Machine,
- 24:30which you saw it's, you know, see no evil, hear no evil, speak
- 24:33no evil and kind of primality and how that goes in society
- 24:37because we want people really thinking about stuff like that
- 24:41when they go in this. And there is almost kind of this
- 24:44Stephen King universe element to it where all these labels are
- 24:49kind of starting to connect and it's out of our control in kind
- 24:53of like this bigger story all together.
- 24:56And that's kind of interesting to us that we kind of realized
- 24:59the other day where it's kind of like the story at this point is
- 25:02kind of writing itself, which is cool, and I think it's cool for
- 25:04the fans out there. Amazing, amazing stuff.
- 25:06And by the way, since I have the ministry, there it is right
- 25:09there. People can see, you know, when I
- 25:12look at this bag, I see like the last 25 years of ministry
- 25:15iconography, album covers and merch, like it feels right, you
- 25:20know, and I think that's the best compliment I can say is it
- 25:23feels right. We like, you know, it's not just
- 25:25good coffee, the whole experience, which is amazing.
- 25:29And that's what we really, we've become an experiential culture.
- 25:32So hopefully that offset having tangible stuff again and
- 25:36physical merch and media and and a packaging that shows love to
- 25:40the genre and to the fan that paid for it.
- 25:42I think it's super special. And in this also time of
- 25:47disposable everything else, this is something real.
- 25:50So I think, you know, there's I'm sure you guys have fanboys
- 25:52that buy everything and collect everything the minute there's a
- 25:55drop. You do a very nice job on your
- 25:57marketing and social media just as an outside person.
- 25:59Yeah, absolutely. And now we're taking it to the
- 26:02next level that we've been taking it to is, you know, in
- 26:06stores, on the road and tours. We just did big promotion with
- 26:11Testament the other night when they were playing in Brooklyn on
- 26:15May 13th. And you know, we brought in the
- 26:16photographer, videographer. We had a huge, you know, a huge
- 26:21banner for people to stand in front of and get pictures taken.
- 26:24And it was cool to see like fathers and sons and but you
- 26:28know, husbands and wives and getting them like really into
- 26:31this experience. And then, you know, we start to
- 26:34see, you know, the artists are like get really behind it as
- 26:37well. Guare especially has been
- 26:39amazing to work with. We did an in store where we
- 26:42brought out fans and we were housing them down with blood
- 26:45with Blothar. And I mean, like really that's
- 26:47the next step. That's the next evolution of
- 26:49like, like, and this has been our Rd. year of like, how do we
- 26:52take this on the road and actually make it, you know,
- 26:54almost kind of like that theme park heavy metal experience for
- 26:58the fans in person as well and continuing to work at that, you
- 27:04know, at the bigger festivals and bigger things.
- 27:07One of the coolest things that we've ever did, and we've been
- 27:10working on this project for years and it is so we're so
- 27:15excited and happy to get across the finish line is the first
- 27:18legitimate haunted coffee in the world, and we just released it
- 27:22with Katrina Weedman. We shipped up coffee to the
- 27:26Pennhurst Asylum in Pennsylvania and actually had it rested on
- 27:30site in the morgue, in the basement, in the haunted nursery
- 27:34all around. So the fans can actually take
- 27:37this haunted coffee back home. And, you know, I don't know,
- 27:40it's going to, you know, bad juju or good juju.
- 27:41I have no idea. It's a disclaimer we throw out
- 27:43there. But you know, again, taking it
- 27:45to the next level of you know, the possibilities of you know
- 27:48what we can do with a coffee bean.
- 27:50Right on, that's amazing. I have just a few more questions
- 27:53for you, man, you've been fantastic.
- 27:54I feel like in a in another life, we would not just be hat
- 27:57twins, but you know, best friends, because you seem just
- 27:59like same kind of vibe is me, which I I dig so much music man.
- 28:04Obviously music's a big part of this, but also horror and other
- 28:07things. So, you know, obviously you you
- 28:10you referenced a very deep cut for Metallica people, even
- 28:13though Metallica is the biggest thing ever.
- 28:15The original garage days is a real deep cut for me from my
- 28:19youth also, and and something very important to me.
- 28:23You know, what were some important bands for you growing
- 28:25up that got you into music? And it doesn't have to be heavy
- 28:28music. I wouldn't be surprised if
- 28:29there's some other stuff in there too.
- 28:31On her website and, and I think my first introduction to music
- 28:36in general was, you know, you know, my older brother and this
- 28:40is back in the 80s of you know, and I, I think around the time,
- 28:44you know, Joshua Tree was dropping, you know, in excess
- 28:47was, you know, dropping first album, you know, even like, you
- 28:50know, Pet Shop Boys and all that.
- 28:51And, you know, pop culture and you know, I'd listen to a couple
- 28:54albums, but we're my moment where I really discovered with
- 28:58what I was really going to align the most.
- 29:01And I I like a lot of, like you said yourself before we started
- 29:04the podcast, you know, there's a lot of genres of music I like,
- 29:07you know, whether it's hardcore, punk, you know, indie, but the
- 29:10my first roots were in metal and it's something that's always
- 29:13stuck with me. And I got throw it out there to
- 29:17Peace of Mind. Iron Maiden.
- 29:19My brother had a mixtape and we were living over in Europe at
- 29:24the time, you know, military brat and all that good stuff.
- 29:27And my brother had this mixtape of Sticky Fingers, Rolling
- 29:30Stones on one side and he had Iron Maiden on the other.
- 29:33And on side AI got through, you know, you know, Brown sugar and
- 29:37I got through my favorite song to this day on that album is
- 29:40Sway. And I was like, this is really
- 29:41cool, you know, getting into this kind of weird, different,
- 29:44you know, than the pop and this is kind of cool.
- 29:46And then I flipped over and when Eagle's stare where Eagle's
- 29:50stare comes on, you know, Nico's, you know, drums on the
- 29:53opening. And I was like, this is weird.
- 29:55This is unique. This is kind of cool, strange.
- 29:58I kind of like it. Very aggressive.
- 30:00And I went and Revelations came on.
- 30:03It was right. I almost can't use a better term
- 30:06than that. Revelations came on and I was
- 30:09just hooked, addicted. And then, you know, that kind of
- 30:12was my gates, you know, gates of hell opening for me.
- 30:16And then from there it was, you know, going down, you know, it
- 30:21down this rabbit hole of just eating, breathing, living this.
- 30:26And you know, you know, everything from Metallica to
- 30:28Megadeth the Slayer to even, you know, first, you know, Cannibal
- 30:31records and going down. And I, I just have that
- 30:34personality where think about this the other day where, you
- 30:37know, if somebody gives me two inches, I want to Step 3 inches
- 30:40over the line. And for me, what my tastes have
- 30:43always been, I'm always looking for something a little bit more
- 30:46extreme. So, you know, that's gets into
- 30:49black metal, it gets into the dark realms of, you know, death
- 30:53metal or even, you know, like, you know, arch Spire where it's
- 30:56like, how many BPMS can I get? You know, I love that shit.
- 30:59I love that stuff. So that's, you know, some of the
- 31:02big, you know, pinnacles for me. And I really, we have to throw
- 31:07it out to that era. I think that was the first real
- 31:10renaissance of heavy metal of albums like, you know, when
- 31:14Seasons and the Abyss were coming out and like Rust in
- 31:17Peace in the big four and you know, you know, practice what
- 31:20you preach and you know, and all that records.
- 31:22And it was just this renaissance.
- 31:24And what I, what we're trying to get across too in the copies we
- 31:29do is trying to get, it's so awesome to go to shows and see
- 31:32kids starting to get into this. And it's awesome that we can
- 31:35help kind of share some of these legendary artists, whether it's
- 31:39Cavallera and, you know, Cannibal and Testament and all
- 31:41these guys, a ministry even of going back to them and
- 31:47presenting it in a way that was presented back to us at that
- 31:52time. And that's what's really cool.
- 31:54It's it's being a part of that and sharing that is I think what
- 31:59we're all about. So but yeah, I mean, I got
- 32:01again, I always got to go back to Peace of Mind and say that's,
- 32:05you know, my all time entry level record.
- 32:08But I mean, there's been, you know, records over time that
- 32:12have really transformed and changed my life.
- 32:15One of those records I'll I'll throw out there is a band called
- 32:20The X, the EX out of the Netherlands.
- 32:23And not, I don't know how many people really know them, but I
- 32:26saw them back opening for Fugazi when I lived in Washington state
- 32:30back in 98 or 99. I thought it was 99.
- 32:34And, you know, they had just come out with a record produced
- 32:38by Merge Records. I think it was Merge or Touch
- 32:41and Go, I can't remember which one.
- 32:44Anyways, they just had the most killer live performance where
- 32:48people were just standing there, like in shock and awe, not even
- 32:51moving. Just like, Oh my God, that's the
- 32:53craziest thing I've ever seen. Very noise punk.
- 32:56And when I listen to that record where you started hearing sounds
- 33:00you've never heard before, performed on a guitar, and you
- 33:03started hearing actual poetry and stuff written in the music,
- 33:07Starters and Alternators is that album.
- 33:09If anybody hasn't listened to it, they'll change your life.
- 33:11Go out and listen to it. So there's different stuff like
- 33:13that that is actually transforms, you know, you know,
- 33:18my love of music and what I like.
- 33:19And, you know, we try to take elements of that and also
- 33:22incorporate that into, you know, what we do, Not directly with
- 33:26the artist, but just different ideas from that incorporating
- 33:28into this. And, you know, and like lately I
- 33:31guess I've been getting back into some of the stuff I feel
- 33:35like I missed, you know, back in the 80s.
- 33:37It's hard to gobble up so much music and you know, so you start
- 33:42to go back and start to find these loves of albums like in
- 33:44the 80s or bands that you never listen to.
- 33:46So that's kind of where I'm at the stage right now, is
- 33:49revisiting a lot of stuff actually.
- 33:51Amazing, amazing. Maybe a band you know, Perhaps a
- 33:54band you missed with some deep and great roots.
- 33:57Cryptic Slaughter. Always my first recommendation
- 34:00for people for overlooked bands. Originally LED there by Blasco,
- 34:04who now is, you know, he's no big deal, just the guy behind
- 34:08Liquid Death and plays with Zack Wylde and all this shit.
- 34:11Ozzy, super cool. Let's talk for a second about
- 34:15cold brew and K cups because I was not traditionally a cold
- 34:18brew person, but I love the cold brew you sent me.
- 34:21So that's another one I don't have.
- 34:23I have the can hidden somewhere in a shelf, but I didn't have it
- 34:27handy, but I should have pulled it out because also same kind of
- 34:30great packaging. And really, you know, goes down
- 34:34well for a person that's not I like iced coffee and very, you
- 34:38know, my hot coffee. I'll take a lot of different
- 34:40ways. My iced coffee I like the same
- 34:42way all the time. So the cold brew fascinated me
- 34:45and I'm super glad that I liked it.
- 34:46Tell us about getting in to cold.
- 34:48You know, like these Nitro cold brews and also K cups.
- 34:51They're so popular now. Yeah, the Nitro cold brews
- 34:54started off with Cannibal and you know, we know, we knew we
- 34:57loved the product. We know everybody loved the
- 34:59product, people record stores wanted it in bars wanted it in
- 35:04as a more of a, you know, a heavy metal like NA alternative
- 35:09and even like in the motorcycle. We do, you know, we do some
- 35:12motorcycle labels as well with like choppers, zinc and whatnot.
- 35:16And kind of the idea behind that was, you know, how do you get
- 35:19the metal head going to a concert and having something in
- 35:22their hand that's not a Starbucks or not a Dasani water
- 35:25and not a Coca-Cola. So they still feel like they're
- 35:27a part of the crowd and feel like they're a part of the party
- 35:30and, you know, feel very inclusive.
- 35:31So we're like, how can we make a Nitro cold brew can look and
- 35:35feel like a beer at the same time?
- 35:37And that's what we really did with Cannibal.
- 35:39And we're like, man, this is no beer cans going to look like
- 35:42this is, you know, kind of crazy.
- 35:44And did it with Chopper Zinc and did it with, you know, even, you
- 35:47know, Ministry and you know, Cavalera and whatnot, right?
- 35:50It's kind of cool. But with Cannibal, we had all
- 35:53these different works of promo art that we had worked on, you
- 35:57know, with Vince and reiterated iterations, you know, kind of
- 36:02like to a point where it's like, Oh my God, we got so many of
- 36:04these. It's like, you know, Iron Maiden
- 36:06covers, you know, so we you know, kind of like he's Vince's
- 36:11zombie has become like a little Eddie.
- 36:12Now it's it's kind of taken off a life as its own.
- 36:14It's it's really insane. Kudos to Vince.
- 36:17And we kind of like had this idea of like, well, let's
- 36:21release 1 can with one artwork, then let's release another.
- 36:24Let's get to a six pack. So it's a collectible 6 pack,
- 36:27then let's go all the way to a case of 24.
- 36:30And yeah, right now with Cannibal, we're getting ready to
- 36:32release. I think finally #5 we took a
- 36:35break for a little while, but we're getting back to that and
- 36:39we're getting into slim cans because everybody is and, and
- 36:43doing that. And it's, it's been cool.
- 36:45It's been we think it is the best product that is going to be
- 36:49for the festivals, whether it's a DWP festival that size 200,000
- 36:54people, whether it's a metal cruise or wet, whether it's a
- 36:57local show. It's really for us, it's just
- 37:00about getting the energy in you getting the caffeine.
- 37:03If you, you know, need to sober up or if you don't, you know,
- 37:06you're just not drinking alcohol.
- 37:08It's a cool thing and you're going to feel really cool
- 37:11drinking this and holding this. And it's also a collectible at
- 37:13the end of the day. I mean, like, you know, you go
- 37:15back to, you know, college days or whatever, you know, people
- 37:17were collecting beer bottles, you know, why not have coffee
- 37:19cans, you know, why not, you know, resemble that.
- 37:22So yeah, we're really excited about that.
- 37:24Our first cans, and I'll just let everybody know now is coming
- 37:30up, is going to be Motörhead, Motörhead, Nitro Cold Brew,
- 37:33Speed Freak cans will be out very soon.
- 37:37We'll do a big release on that. Will be killer getting the sneak
- 37:40preview here. Audio version, I guess, and the
- 37:43K cups. Yeah, we'd consider doing it.
- 37:47We did a couple of test market runs and the coffee world
- 37:50references changed literally weekly.
- 37:53So it's like when we do events, it's like, you know, we have all
- 37:56these grind options and we're kind of like this.
- 37:58This week's percolators are popular this week, so there is
- 38:02no rhyme or reason to it. The the algorithm, we cannot
- 38:05figure it out. So we were people just weren't
- 38:08drinking the pods for a long time and we're kind of like,
- 38:11yeah, let's not bring it back. Then all of a sudden there was
- 38:13demand. So we decided, you know what,
- 38:16let's do something different. Let's all the other coffee
- 38:19coffee companies are sending it out to be done.
- 38:21Let's bring everything in house machinery, you know, we're
- 38:26already roasting in house and packaging and everything and
- 38:28shipping and doing everything, you know, literally from
- 38:30scratch. Let's do the pods that way.
- 38:33So we partnered with a company to use patented technology and
- 38:37patented machinery and bring it in.
- 38:39And the difference that the pods that we've been producing and
- 38:44the once you get off a shelf is night and day.
- 38:47Like I was really surprised. I was like, I can't tell the
- 38:49difference between a, you know, a pot of coffee brew and one of
- 38:53these K cups now. And, you know, the art on the
- 38:57cups, like, for example, like right here is Pavallera, making
- 39:01sure the artwork is on there and making sure every cup is just
- 39:05perfect before it goes out the door.
- 39:08And yeah, it's been successful so far, making it at a good
- 39:11price point. And yeah, it's been really,
- 39:15really successful. Right on.
- 39:17And Made in America very well. Thank you so much for that.
- 39:20Super cool to unpack all that. I'd love to.
- 39:22I've been in a coffee factory where coffee's roasted and
- 39:25packaged. I would love to, if I ever get
- 39:27down your way again, I'd love to throw on a hard hat and walk
- 39:29around a factory and and do a tour.
- 39:32Just for a last question, because I always like to end on
- 39:34a wild card question, if you could take a band out for
- 39:37coffee, what band would it be? That is.
- 39:43Living or Dead? Any band, current, historical,
- 39:47your choice. And it's funny you say this
- 39:49because we actually have a vault here.
- 39:51It's a proverbial vault, but it's not, it's actually exists
- 39:54physical. It's more, you know, file
- 39:57folder. But we, you get a lot of time
- 40:00sitting around sorting beans and roasting coffee and packaging
- 40:05and you're, everybody does it here.
- 40:06And, you know, your mind starts to wander and you know the
- 40:09stereo is blaring, you know, day and night, you know somebody's
- 40:12playlist. And you start to get these ideas
- 40:14and you get on these tangent. Agents and you start talking to
- 40:16somebody and going back and forth, yeah, this would be cool.
- 40:19And that would be cool. So people would be surprised at
- 40:22the amount of unrevealed artwork and concepts that we actually
- 40:26have in the vault. So usually, sometimes it's funny
- 40:29because we'll go to an artist and we'll say, hey, what do you
- 40:32think of this? And they're like, well, it's
- 40:33already done. And we're like, yeah, we had
- 40:35some time on our hands and, you know, put it, put this all
- 40:37together. But I will say out there at the
- 40:41top, I mean, I just think it would be amazing to do.
- 40:46So I'm going to go back and I know, you know, I'm saying, you
- 40:48know, Peace of Mind and all that.
- 40:50I would working with Iron Maiden would be next level.
- 40:55I mean, it would be something that, you know, I would say this
- 40:58is kind of one of the closest to the pinnacles you can get.
- 41:01And the reason I say that is just the pure volume and amount
- 41:07of work that they have out there is amazing and the artwork is
- 41:12insane. And it would be so cool to be a
- 41:16part of that history and some small way to have Eddie on a
- 41:21coffee bag, you know, and some reiteration and some concept
- 41:25that would just be like a dream come true.
- 41:28And I think the fans globally would be totally excited for
- 41:33that. And it would also be kind of
- 41:35iron, you know, irony. I mean, you know, a British
- 41:37band, you know, known for, you know, a country known for tea,
- 41:40you know, having a coffee, you know, legit British metal band.
- 41:44Actually having a coffee out there would be kind of funny
- 41:47too. So, a little bit of irony.
- 41:49There you go. I love it so much and I'm
- 41:51rooting for you for that. And I think it would be kind of
- 41:53fun to have a a cup of coffee with Bruce Dickinson and Steve
- 41:56Harris personally as well. Yeah.
- 41:59We met Derek Wigs at a Horicon back when we launched Cannibal
- 42:04Corpse. We went up to him and he's got a
- 42:06bag of Cannibal Corpse. So, you know, even Derek knows
- 42:09we're out there. Sick, sick.
- 42:11I'm so proud of your success. I'm glad that we've supported
- 42:13you all the whole way so far. And you keep making them.
- 42:16We'll keep drinking them because I can't function without my cup
- 42:19of Joe, you know, Mike, just such a pleasure to hear from you
- 42:22today and hear your story. Cheers to you.
- 42:24Thank you for everything you do for this scene.
- 42:26And I hope to meet you in the wild eventually.
- 42:29And stay tuned to Ghost Call for more unboxing and taste testing
- 42:34videos, because I'm sure I'm going to make another one soon.
- 42:37And you? Know when the fans know out
- 42:39there there are this summer I'm just going to tease is hacked
- 42:44and you are going to see some epic stuff that we've been
- 42:47holding out for just summer releases.
- 42:49So it's going to blow people's minds.
- 42:52So you know again, you know, subscribe to our emails falls on
- 42:55socials as we drop this stuff because these are some of the
- 42:58most interesting some of the most evolutionary things that
- 43:03we've done and we're going to drop and it's going to be such a
- 43:07surprise. I don't think people are going
- 43:09to see where it's coming from. They're just going to be like
- 43:11what the hell? And it's but it's going to be so
- 43:13cool at the same time. Amazing.
- 43:15We'll stay tuned for it. Thanks for hanging out with
- 43:17Ghost Call today, man. I really greatly appreciate you.
- 43:19Yeah. Thank you man.
