- 0:25Music. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner Podcast, a part of the College Huddle Network along
- 0:50with my partners, Brian Siegler, Jonathan Talley and Shelton
- 0:54Moss. I am Curtis Wilson and this
- 0:56episode is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the
- 1:00Counts Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy
- 1:03located three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 1:08Buddy, it's going to be a fun night tonight.
- 1:10We got a few, few guests on and we're going to lead off with our
- 1:13first one tonight. I know everyone has been excited
- 1:17about the the pyramid. We've seen all the 1999
- 1:20comments, that's awesome. But tonight we're going to have
- 1:24on the kind of the brainchild behind this.
- 1:27It's Taylor and Mel Chrisman with Press * Packaging and
- 1:29Creative Karting joining us to talk a little bit more about
- 1:32that. So let's go ahead and bring them
- 1:34on here. Taylor, Mel, how you doing
- 1:36tonight? Hey, we're good.
- 1:38How are you guys? Doing great, doing great.
- 1:41Thanks for jumping on. Just to kind of kick it off, you
- 1:45know, I think everyone's excited about this.
- 1:46Tell us a little bit about how this got started and a little
- 1:49bit of the history of the goal post and and how this this
- 1:53venture came to be. Yeah, so I was 12 years old and
- 1:58we were at that game, a whole family.
- 2:00And, you know, we watched the the goal posts go down and
- 2:03everyone going crazy. And my dad just kind of looked
- 2:05at my mom and he was like, we got to get that goal post.
- 2:09We, we got to do something with it.
- 2:10I don't know what, but we got to do something with it.
- 2:12And by some crazy stroke of luck, my dad had a mutual friend
- 2:19with Frank Beamer. And they got to talk in And
- 2:22Frank was like, hey, I got a piece of it, Bring your truck.
- 2:26And so my dad went back. It was about a about a week
- 2:29later. And sure enough, there was the
- 2:3118 foot crossbar and they loaded it up, hauled it out and they
- 2:37got the idea to cut it up into little one inch squares here and
- 2:42put it in a little acrylic pyramid.
- 2:44So you just, you know, you can hang it up on your wall and just
- 2:47look at it or whatever you want to do.
- 2:51That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 2:53And so this is kind of the I guess the second run of that.
- 2:56I know you guys did the, the first run there a little bit
- 2:59after the game after you came across the, the goal posts there
- 3:02in 99. So what was the, the idea like
- 3:08just 25th anniversary or like it's, it's time to it's time to,
- 3:12to, to run it back a little bit and, and, and see what we can,
- 3:15can do this go round. Yeah.
- 3:18So it is the 25th anniversary of that undefeated season.
- 3:22And we know that there's so much nostalgia kind of building right
- 3:26now. We're definitely kind of in a
- 3:28new era with Virginia Tech football.
- 3:31And I think everybody, I mean, everybody's really been talking
- 3:35about, you know, it's come up a lot, the 25th anniversary of the
- 3:39undefeated season. So we thought why not
- 3:42commemorate that and do another version of the pyramid.
- 3:45So so that was kind of the idea behind re redoing it or
- 3:52releasing like a whole new set. Yeah, and it's really cool.
- 3:57I mean, when you look at it, I mean, I love the obviously the
- 4:00celebrating the 25th anniversary and, and the, and the iconic
- 4:04iconography in there is really cool.
- 4:07And obviously getting the, you know, the piece of that goal
- 4:09post is, is, is huge. And when we look at the fact
- 4:13that I think just in recent, you know, years here, you know, I
- 4:17think we've seen the 99 team celebrated a whole lot more.
- 4:21You know, you get Michael Vick back on campus a lot more the
- 4:24last couple years. He was there this past Thursday.
- 4:28So I mean, it's really awesome to kind of see things come
- 4:32together, especially considering that, you know, when we look
- 4:35back at that, that 20th anniversary, it wasn't quite as
- 4:40celebrated in the way I think a lot of fans and, and football
- 4:43alumni thought it should have been.
- 4:45So it, it's it's awesome that you guys are doing this and kind
- 4:48of bringing some attention to that.
- 4:49And I think, you know, just that whole groundswell about that
- 4:53team has been been pretty big this year.
- 4:55Yeah, absolutely. Let's ask this, Amel, you said
- 4:59you were there in 1999 at that game, obviously, and your dad
- 5:03was like, let's get the goal posts.
- 5:05But obviously if you were there for that game, you were there
- 5:08for a lot more. Taylor, I know you're a big fan
- 5:11as well. So go back to 1999.
- 5:14You're 12 years old. What was like the game for you?
- 5:17Was that the game or was there something else in the season
- 5:20where it was like this team special?
- 5:22And I am. You're at the age of where like,
- 5:25I'm going to remember this forever.
- 5:27Yeah, it we, it was actually our first year having season tickets
- 5:32was that year my parents knew, you know, I think the whole, the
- 5:36whole fan base knew it could be, could be a pretty special
- 5:39something, but I don't think anyone knew exactly what was
- 5:41coming. And that was quite a, quite the
- 5:45year to pick to, to start season tickets.
- 5:47But you know, you always have one of those things where
- 5:52something happens and you no matter what, you always remember
- 5:54exactly where you were when it happened.
- 5:57And it was the West Virginia game for us.
- 5:59It was an away game. And of all the, the craziness,
- 6:04we were like, we, we got to get out, out of the house.
- 6:06Can't watch the game for a minute.
- 6:07Let's take a break. And we were out and my mom was
- 6:10listening on her her yellow Walkman headphones right when
- 6:15when Mike took it down the field and then Shane hit that field
- 6:17goal. That was one of those things
- 6:18that just seared in my mind and that that did it for me, that
- 6:21West Virginia game. I, I feel like everyone has a, a
- 6:25miracle in Morgantown story, like everybody, everybody that's
- 6:29a tech fan remembers what they were doing, who they were with
- 6:32when that moment happened, just because of the, the, the stakes
- 6:37that were at play for what the Hokies could potentially be that
- 6:40year. And I feel like, you know, that
- 6:42drive kind of encapsulated the, the, the fighting spirit of, of
- 6:46that team that year, because they, not all those games were
- 6:49pretty right? Like there were, there were some
- 6:50blowouts, but not all those games are pretty.
- 6:52It was a, it was a, it was a hard fought game in, in, in that
- 6:55particular instance. And you know, like I said, I
- 6:58think I think all of us hockey fans remember where we were when
- 7:02we saw that drive take place. And funny enough, I was on the
- 7:06hill at UVA in Charlottesville because I was playing high
- 7:10school football at the time and my head coach was a big UVA fan.
- 7:14So we were watching UVA, Georgia Tech.
- 7:17They're on the hill because he took, he took all of us for like
- 7:21an end of season trip down there and they put it up on the
- 7:27screen. They put the, the, the West
- 7:28Virginia Tech game up on the screen.
- 7:31And so that all these UVA fans are like pulling for West
- 7:35Virginia here. And there's like a a bunch of us
- 7:37on our our team that are hokey fans that just happened to be
- 7:40there with our coach and we're, you know, talking trash there on
- 7:43the hill. And yeah, sweating bullets a
- 7:47little bit there until the end. But once, once, once, once it
- 7:50happened. There was a whole lot of fun
- 7:51trash talking there on the hill that day.
- 7:53Oh yeah. Tally what you got.
- 7:59And I'm just sitting back trying to figure out how I can get my
- 8:01hands on one of them here me. It's about paying for it.
- 8:04I'm trying to figure out how to do that.
- 8:06I know some people's been asking in the some people's been asking
- 8:10in the in the chat how they can get it.
- 8:14Curtis, you want to tell them how they can get their hands on
- 8:16it or Brian I'll. Go ahead and tell you where
- 8:19y'all can get it. If you go to the Boundary Corner
- 8:21Podcast vt.com website under Goal Post pyramid it links you
- 8:27directly in to the creative carting.com where you can
- 8:31purchase it right there. It is one or $199, $0.90, the
- 8:38perfect 1999 there. So y'all definitely can go there
- 8:42to get it. But Mel and Taylor have been so
- 8:47nice to actually we're giving one away.
- 8:49If y'all have not noticed there has been more than one time.
- 8:53If we take a look here, there are a lot of 1990 nines being
- 8:56pulled up. So Mel and Taylor, I don't know
- 8:58if y'all had a chance to listen last week, but what we are doing
- 9:01is starting last week, this week and next week's episode, we are
- 9:06asking to subscribe to our YouTube channel and then put in
- 9:10a comment. Now it can be a comment and talk
- 9:12about everything or you can just put what some of these wonderful
- 9:14folks had. David Tibb Levar 1999 You have
- 9:18to be subscribed and you have to comment either on the live
- 9:21podcast or, you know, we understand some people got to go
- 9:25to bed at 9:00. You can do it on the the the the
- 9:29YouTube. Recorder pulling in the live
- 9:31comments and all the the standard comments so if you if
- 9:34you get them in there on the YouTube on last week's video
- 9:38this week's video, next week's video that's your entry that is
- 9:42your entry we're going. To So pretty simple.
- 9:44Pretty simple. I mean, one click, a couple of
- 9:48clicks, hang out with us, watch Curtis drink a little beer,
- 9:52watch Sheldon do some cussing. You know that's name stuff that
- 9:55we do all week. All you got to do is put 1999 in
- 9:59the chat, subscribe and hang out with us for a little bit.
- 10:03And you got your opportunity to win A to win one of the one of
- 10:07the pyramids, which is awesome, man, just to see it, the how
- 10:09it's made, what it looks like to have a piece of history in any
- 10:14man cave or woman she shed, whatever you want to call it.
- 10:18Just any sports fan would love to get their hands on it.
- 10:21And again, if you got it like that, just go to the website and
- 10:24buy it, which is probably what I have to do because I don't think
- 10:26they're going to rig it for me to win.
- 10:28I've tried behind the scenes to get them to read it for me to
- 10:32win. So I'm probably just going to
- 10:33have to go buy it. Tally you don't have like 3 or 4
- 10:35burners on YouTube. I, I, I've tried it, I've tried
- 10:40it. That's the one we're.
- 10:41Going to get real suspicious if it wanted burners win.
- 10:45I see Bama Hokey 69. I'm not putting that in there.
- 10:49My problem is I like to talk too much.
- 10:51So when I start talking on the, yeah, when I start talking on
- 10:54the on the burners is when people's like, Oh yeah, we
- 10:56already know that voice. We know where that is.
- 10:59So. Sheldon, you got anything to ask
- 11:03before? I've got a couple more questions
- 11:04I want to ask Mel and Mel and Taylor here.
- 11:08No, no, man, I just, I just think it's great that we're,
- 11:12we're kind of preserving this, this piece of history.
- 11:15I know we did it for the, for some seats in, in Castle
- 11:18Coliseum where they they took some seats out and then they
- 11:20kind of sold them off. So I just, I think it's great.
- 11:22I can't wait until we beat Clemson in November and then we
- 11:26can tear it on the goal posts and throw it in the duck pond.
- 11:27And then 20 years from now, we'll be we'll be auctioning off
- 11:30pieces from the Clemson goal post.
- 11:31So I like it. I like.
- 11:35It so so let me ask this right now, obviously both y'all being
- 11:39fans and everything. Any interactions with the
- 11:42current coaching staff and just where they stand or and also who
- 11:48is your favorite Hokie? We we all have different
- 11:50favorite Hokies on this. So I'd just love to hear a
- 11:52little bit more about how you feel about the new coach staff
- 11:55plus who you're I random the double.
- 11:59Tie in the double tie in by Robbie there with.
- 12:02Respect. I'm, I'm a fan of the new
- 12:07coaching staff still. I, I think they're the ones that
- 12:10they're trying and we're, we're starting to see it.
- 12:12Things are coming together. They're rounding out like I I
- 12:18was watching the last week in the Shelton year breakdown of
- 12:22how Kyron is getting better and better, especially through the
- 12:25intermediate. Let's go, let's go.
- 12:28That that summed it up to me, the.
- 12:30Whole the whole question. Staff.
- 12:32Summed it up to me that we're, we're starting to really take
- 12:36strides to get to where we all think that we we should be at.
- 12:40So yeah, I'm a fan. I think.
- 12:42I think we're going in the right the right direction for sure.
- 12:47Yeah, that it's exciting. I think it's exciting time for
- 12:49everybody and I think, you know, hiccups to to start the year
- 12:54aside, I think we're starting to see this team round into what we
- 12:57thought they could be and, and hit that level of play that that
- 13:01we expected. And it's it's exciting because
- 13:04you know, we talked about it before we jumped on here.
- 13:06I've talked about it with Sheldon a few times, with Curtis
- 13:09and Tally a few times. You know, everything that we
- 13:11still wanted from a beginning of the year goal is still, you
- 13:16know, in play and we we just got to go out there and take care of
- 13:19business. So it's, it's exciting and, and
- 13:22to Sheldon's point, you know, let's go out and beat Clemson
- 13:24and have another goal post to talk about.
- 13:28Yes, Sir, Can't wait. Definitely.
- 13:30Hey, one question I got for you guys is where where y'all at
- 13:33right now? Mel and and Taylor like wait,
- 13:36where y'all at? What?
- 13:38Oh, so we're in Christiansburg, VA, So we're like 10 minutes
- 13:43away from Virginia. Oh, wait, like where are we at?
- 13:45Like located like geography. I'm just saying like what room
- 13:48are y'all in right now? I just see the I see the, I see
- 13:52the wind, I see the wind flag in the back.
- 13:54So I'm trying to see who's got this, who's got this cool room
- 13:57that y'all are sitting in this? Is our dining room.
- 14:00Yeah. We're not pretenders.
- 14:02We are. We are die hard tech.
- 14:04Yeah, Are they real? Oh, they they real.
- 14:07Hey, you got a wind flag sitting in the dining room.
- 14:10Hey, you are winning in life. That ain't just a flag.
- 14:12Hey. Let's let's throw it up there.
- 14:15Typically we have it in our gym and it's it's a pretty sick gym
- 14:18and it's got lots of Virginia Tech memorabilia in there.
- 14:20So, you know, inspirational. There we go.
- 14:24Very nice and there. Is Jason likes what he sees,
- 14:26does like? What he sees right there, right
- 14:29there. So before we just wrap this up
- 14:33again, we want to again, thank you all for not only taking a
- 14:36few minutes out of your evening. We understand everybody works.
- 14:39Everybody's got things they've got to do.
- 14:42But we also want to say thank you for like unleashing this
- 14:45back to the Virginia Tech fan base, giving us the opportunity
- 14:49to give it away. And I don't know what else to
- 14:53say. I'm I'm with Shelton.
- 14:55It's like that Clemson Yang needs to be coming.
- 14:58Take it, take a piece, tuck it in the duck pong.
- 15:00Now, Mel and Taylor, I don't know how y'all are going to get
- 15:03it, but if that happens, Mel, you're going to, y'all are going
- 15:07to have to like go get the truck that night because I, I don't
- 15:09think it's going to be sitting in Lane Stadium or sitting at
- 15:12the duck pond long. I don't think so either.
- 15:14Yeah, you better be. Camped out, I agree.
- 15:17And, and, and that'd be too Curtis's point, just yeah, thank
- 15:20you for being good stewards of this piece of memorabilia for
- 15:24over the years and just, you know, bringing it back and
- 15:27giving it back to to the hokey fans that will take good care of
- 15:30and cherish it. No, nobody deserves it more than
- 15:33the the hokey fan base. We've been up, we've been down
- 15:36and there's a lot that have been there the whole time.
- 15:39So yeah, fanbase deserves everything like this I can get.
- 15:42Yeah. And honestly, we've had stories
- 15:45since we released this, like, I was there.
- 15:47I really wanted to, like, touch that goal post.
- 15:50And, you know, they were like, too far away or they just
- 15:52weren't kind of like in the fray.
- 15:54But we've had people say that was like, my favorite memory
- 15:58ever. And to be able to, like, own a
- 16:00piece of it is pretty cool. They can just look at it and
- 16:02remember, you know, that they were there.
- 16:05And I, I do think it's, it's a, it's such a special moment that
- 16:07I think a lot of people remember.
- 16:10Yeah, I mean, for a lot of people, it is kind of the
- 16:12pinnacle of, you know, what hokey football has achieved in
- 16:16in most of our lifetime. So I mean, it's really it it
- 16:19it's absolutely a piece of history.
- 16:20And again, just, you know, thanks for sharing the love
- 16:23here. Thank you guys.
- 16:25Yeah. Thank you guys for what you do.
- 16:26Yeah. Yep.
- 16:27We appreciate it guys. And again, if you want to know
- 16:31where to get that, go to the boundary corner website goal
- 16:34post pyramid if you just want to purchase 1 outright and then
- 16:37flaunt it to those who don't win.
- 16:39And like listen, I just bucked up the money and just paid for
- 16:42it 19990. And again, if you want to see it
- 16:45just so y'all can see how passionate it is, we are like
- 16:48when we start this, we just get flooded with 90 nines out of
- 16:51everywhere. So it's pretty sweet.
- 16:54And again, we appreciate y'all partnering up with us on this
- 16:57and hopefully in the very near future we can all catch you,
- 17:01catch up with each other down in Blacksburg at Lane Stadium, we'd
- 17:05love. That.
- 17:06Awesome, well y'all take care and y'all have a good evening.
- 17:09Thank you. Thanks.
- 17:10Guys. See y'all.
- 17:11Thank y'all. So cool.
- 17:14It's just so cool. I mean, there's no more another
- 17:18way to say it. It's just cool to know that is
- 17:20there. Tally, just tell your wife
- 17:23that's what you want for Christmas.
- 17:25She'll get it for you and you know.
- 17:28You can put it right over your shoulder there next to the
- 17:30bottle of liquor. Right there.
- 17:31Yeah, we see. It and that's a good I think
- 17:33that's a good place for it I think that's a good place for it
- 17:36yeah I got a couple of spots I think I can I can I can put it
- 17:39up in it around the house so I mean 'cause that actually looks
- 17:43a little bit elegant you know what I'm saying 'cause you got
- 17:46the nice glass to go on it it doesn't look like a mini helmet
- 17:49you know what I'm saying like a lot of the stuff that I have
- 17:52but. Hey don't don't trash the mini
- 17:53helmets. Though I love mini helmets
- 17:55though. I got plenty man, I love mini.
- 17:56He's just saying he can put that in the living room and.
- 17:58Wait, I can put that in the living room, man, I can put that
- 18:01like right on the mantle or. Something it's pretty all right.
- 18:04Well, boys, we got a lot to break down tonight.
- 18:06We are going to be talking with a special guest from the rec
- 18:10tech, right? I get that right.
- 18:13Rick talk, Rick. Talk.
- 18:15I can't spell the nightmare. Talk with Know the enemy.
- 18:19What? What?
- 18:20Kind of shirt you got on, man. Y'all know what I got on?
- 18:23So in case y'all were wondering and y'all paid attention way
- 18:27back in May, we asked Coach Pry. Well.
- 18:30Tally asked on behalf of everybody.
- 18:33Coach, we love the shirts. Can you send them to us?
- 18:36And y'all, they didn't, they didn't they didn't skimp on it.
- 18:40They sent all of us the hunger drills shirts I had to wear.
- 18:44It's now the perfect time of year for this shirt.
- 18:46It's nice light. It's a perfect for a fall night.
- 18:48I had to bring it out tonight. I mean, it's just a sick shirt,
- 18:51so. Curtis, you're getting called
- 18:53out already, man. Sorry, sorry Rex.
- 18:55Sorry man, I completely spelled it wrong in a rundown.
- 18:59I'm very sorry. So you can you can land basement
- 19:01when you get in here. So don't worry, Curtis messes up
- 19:04names all the time. Oh yeah, don't take it all.
- 19:11Righty well, we got that later on, but let's start with Tell
- 19:14the Truth Tuesday with a massive victory of the BC 4221 on
- 19:19Thursday night and I'm going to go through here real quick on
- 19:21some things we said. First of all, Shelton Moss said.
- 19:26We have to embrace Thursday night.
- 19:28Shelton did this team, the coaching staff and the fans
- 19:32embrace Thursday night. Absolutely one of the most
- 19:35historic rushing performances we've ever seen from Mahokey,
- 19:39with Bashawk Tooten setting the single game record-breaking
- 19:41Darren Darren Edmonton's record APR with another 4 sack banger
- 19:46put up 42 points. You know, you give up, I mean
- 19:49you give up three turnovers and still win by 21.
- 19:52I mean that's, you know, that's about all you can ask for.
- 19:54And we took the the all time lead and most wins on Thursday
- 19:58night with our 25th win since 1994, more than any other team
- 20:01in the country. So back in sole possession of
- 20:03Thursday night. So it is officially our nights
- 20:06and nobody else's. There we go.
- 20:07We embraced it. Jonathan Talley, you said we
- 20:11needed to limit Tommy Castellanos legs.
- 20:14Did we limit that man's legs? Yeah, we turned Castellanos into
- 20:17a castaway. He was out of him.
- 20:20He was cast off fumbling the ball.
- 20:24I don't know if he's still hurt. I mean, I hope nobody's hurt,
- 20:27but you know, fumbling the ball, seeing ghosts getting hit,
- 20:31chasing him around, APR on his head like a toupee.
- 20:35I mean, it was a good night. In his face, on the sideline.
- 20:39It was a good night, man. It was just, I mean, you seen a
- 20:43lot of great performances. But again, back to what Curtis
- 20:46said, talking about my key to performance was limit his, limit
- 20:50his legs, and I think he may have had like 58 yards on 20
- 20:52carries. So I'll take that, you know.
- 20:55I'll take that as long as it was 18.
- 20:58So you do the math. It's even worse after that.
- 21:01Brian Siegler, you said get off the field on money downs and I
- 21:04think we did that pretty good. Yeah, especially in the first
- 21:08half, I think they only had two conversions in the first half.
- 21:12Really good job overall from for throughout the game they're
- 21:16getting off on money downs and to that point, a lot of getting
- 21:20off the field on money downs is Tally's point there of limit
- 21:23what Castellanos does with his legs.
- 21:25He was not scrambling that well. We did a good job of containing
- 21:29them, keeping in the pocket, getting them down.
- 21:30We needed to and the, you know, the results speak for
- 21:34themselves, I think. 100% and mine was just finish, finish,
- 21:39finish, finish. We talked about BC allowing Sax
- 21:42and APR 8 all night, 4 sacks, his 3rd 4th sack game of his
- 21:48career here at Virginia Tech 2 this season.
- 21:51And then in the offensive side of the ball, touchdowns, not
- 21:54field goals. You know how many times we went
- 21:55in the red zone Thursday night? How many how many times 4 did we
- 22:01kick any field goals? Nope, 4 touchdowns.
- 22:06And as we talked about it, though, they were not a shabby
- 22:10red zone defense. They had only given up five
- 22:12touchdowns all season in the red zone.
- 22:15We damn near got to that number Thursday night.
- 22:17So we told the truth about what our keys were and we talked
- 22:21about what went well. Sheldon already hit it up
- 22:23Tooting breaking the Rush game record 18 carries for 266.
- 22:29Insane that. Is sick.
- 22:32I'm telling you, but that's what I'll say.
- 22:35I think we talked about this a couple of weeks ago and I was
- 22:37like, or even I can't remember if we talked about it on here.
- 22:40We posted on Twitter some, some happened, but we talked about
- 22:43getting him the ball more. I mean, since the beginning of
- 22:46the year, getting him the ball, letting him fill the game.
- 22:48Like the offense has to go through him.
- 22:50And it looked like they decided that, OK, that's what we need to
- 22:54do. Let's, let's get the ball in our
- 22:56playmaker's hands. And he, he showed up and showed
- 22:59out. And again, you know, like I
- 23:01said, for whatever reason, some people were saying, well, it's
- 23:05BC. Well, I remember at the
- 23:07beginning of the season, people tab BC to be the ACC winners
- 23:12after they beat Florida State. And you know, they were, I mean,
- 23:15they took Missouri to the to the, to the brink of a, a win.
- 23:19And people thought, Oh, they're going to kill us.
- 23:21And then once we beat them, it's like, oh, it's BC.
- 23:23No, that's a good team. You know, they had, they had to,
- 23:26they had the sack leader on their team or he was tied for
- 23:30second when we played them. But again, we showed up and
- 23:33showed out so and we did it in orange.
- 23:36Go ahead. Hey.
- 23:37Orange he looked quicker without the brace.
- 23:41Hey Sheldon, though, we we got to give Tootin a lot of credit.
- 23:44But you've been saying all year about the offensive line and and
- 23:49you and you dug up the stat earlier.
- 23:51I think actually a couple days ago is when I asked you about it
- 23:54and y'all if, if, if what sheldon's about to tell you
- 23:58continues to happen. The Sky's the limit for Basil
- 24:01Tootin this year. So typically what what I like to
- 24:05do to evaluate offensive line play is look at the percentage
- 24:08of yards before and after contact, just to see how you
- 24:12know how how far it is up field that a running back can get
- 24:15before it gets touched by a defender.
- 24:17So, you know, coming to the game, Tech was not very good at
- 24:20yards before contact per rush. I think they were 108th, if I'm
- 24:24not mistaken in the country. And so, but that totally turned
- 24:28around against BC. So against the Eagles, 6060% of
- 24:32text rushing guards on designed attempts came before contact.
- 24:36That was by far the highest percent percentage of the
- 24:38season. It was like 25% above their next
- 24:41best performance and on a per rush average is about 5.7.
- 24:45So, you know, we saw on Tune's 80 yard touchdown run in the
- 24:48second quarter, he was not touched at all.
- 24:50I mean, the only time he got touched was, you know, when he
- 24:52was in the end zone and that that, you know, that the
- 24:54defender was trailing after him trying to swipe the ball away.
- 24:57But I just, I thought that Olin did a great job blocking and I
- 25:00felt like it was the first time all year where Tune was able to
- 25:03get to the second level on such a consistent basis.
- 25:06And once he's at the second level, man, like it's a wrap.
- 25:08Like he can, he can make you miss, you know, he can just, you
- 25:11know, run, run right around you. Like he's a tough guy to stop
- 25:14once he once he gets past that, that first level.
- 25:16So I thought it was by far the best performance of the season
- 25:19for the online. It wasn't like tune carrying
- 25:21their show. It was a complete team
- 25:23performance. Guys are making their blocks.
- 25:25The Moore brothers were awesome. Xavier Chaplin had another
- 25:28awesome performance. I highlighted him on Twitter.
- 25:30Just all around fantastic performance in terms of
- 25:32blocking. If you can get Shelton.
- 25:35If you can get Shelton to make a highlight tape for a offensive
- 25:40lineman, he doing so that offensive lineman is doing some
- 25:45work. But I've seen Curtis, I didn't
- 25:48mean to cut you off. I've seen Steven put a put a a
- 25:52post up and said, you know, both of those big runs were on
- 25:55chaplain's side. Got to go back and watch that
- 25:57tape because get to know 79 Johnny Garrett on one of those
- 26:02big runs, he was the one who wrapped in the hole and and
- 26:04cleared cleared the trash. So Chaplin's doing an awesome
- 26:09job, but we also got some young lineman that have stepped up and
- 26:12started doing their jobs as well.
- 26:14So Garrett definitely made that big run happen.
- 26:18Johnny Garrett got about 20 snaps.
- 26:20Brody Meadows got about 20 snaps.
- 26:22We're seeing it build for next year.
- 26:25And Sheldon, I think you might have tweeted this out of Brian.
- 26:28Maybe you did. Chaplin was the PFFO lineman
- 26:32again this week, like the entire country, the highest graded guy
- 26:36all week. Chaplain is just coming to his
- 26:39own. And Sheldon, what you deal with
- 26:42that tape like watch him against Donovan.
- 26:44Donovan is an elite pass rusher in college and that's who it was
- 26:47against he he held him at Bay the whole game.
- 26:50Held him at Bay the whole game. Brian, let me ask you real
- 26:53quick, because Sheldon mentioned it already, who did the BC
- 26:58offensive line not hold at Bay the whole game?
- 27:01That would be Mr. APR. I mean.
- 27:06Antoine Powell Ryland had himself a game, you know, went
- 27:10from, you know, started the week fifth in the country in Sachs,
- 27:14finished the weekend even after everybody else played number one
- 27:18in the country in Sachs and just had a hell of a game across the
- 27:22board. You know, had had that fumble
- 27:25recovery stats from from Castellanos there, had some
- 27:30other key tackles, couple other tackle for loss.
- 27:33So he went out there and just wrecked shot for four quarters
- 27:37and it was really impressive to watch.
- 27:39And you know, when we talked about top performances in that
- 27:42game, there were a lot of them, you know, from Kyron being
- 27:47pretty much perfect in the first half, throwing the football what
- 27:50Toon did on 2 long runs and being consistent between the
- 27:54tackles all night. And then you look on the other
- 27:56side, APR second game with four sacks this year and just had had
- 28:04Tommy Castellanos in hell for four quarters.
- 28:06Had that offensive line in hell for four quarters and I'm
- 28:09sitting here Brian, as you were watching that game and and, and,
- 28:13and if y'all over here, Brian and Tally talk about when they
- 28:16watch the game, they don't watch the outside, they watch in the
- 28:19middle of the field. They watch the line play.
- 28:21They all know how y'all do that. Trained eyes I guess.
- 28:24But Brian, when you were watching APR like as your
- 28:26offensive lineman brain was working, did at any point you
- 28:30say, yeah, I don't think they can stop him.
- 28:33Like I don't think they're going to have an answer unless they
- 28:35start like basically giving all the support to that side.
- 28:40Well-being they were given support to that side.
- 28:42I mean, several times that he got to the quarterback, he got
- 28:44chipped by running back or you got chipped by a tight end.
- 28:47Like they weren't ignoring him and he was still getting there.
- 28:51And I think that's, that's the thing that's most impressive.
- 28:53I think you got to give a little bit of credit to the secondary
- 28:56as well, because it does, you know, you got to be able to hold
- 28:59up quick in that, in that coverage for sacks to get home.
- 29:03But they were able to do that and APR was just tearing them up
- 29:07all night. It was, it was lovely.
- 29:10It's like a officer lineman. Most of the time when you look
- 29:13across the line from you, you expect the guy to look a certain
- 29:17way that's going to do certain things.
- 29:19APR is kind of a tweener with his size.
- 29:22When you look at him, you don't expect him to have, you know,
- 29:25maybe elite quickness that he does when he's getting around
- 29:29people. But he's not like a super big
- 29:31guy. So when I say super big, I mean,
- 29:34you know, tall 6566 anywhere around that.
- 29:37So you don't feel like, you know, he's going to bend as much
- 29:41as he is. You know, I'm saying like he has
- 29:43like tremendous bend when he's coming around the around the
- 29:45corner and he's really, really quick to be, you know, kind of
- 29:49that that stocky size. He's not one of those tall lean
- 29:53people, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:54He's got some girth to him. So I think sometimes it even
- 29:57when you watch it on tape and then when you line up across
- 29:59from somebody, you look at them like, OK, I should be able to do
- 30:02this or they shouldn't be able to bull rush me.
- 30:05But he's got some things. And again, I got to go back to
- 30:08what JC has been able to do. He's pulled some different some
- 30:11different tricks out of his hat that shows that he does have
- 30:14pass rush moves. It's not just a bull rusher.
- 30:17He's not just a speed rusher like he sometimes has to, you
- 30:21know, use a jab step or different things like that.
- 30:23And I don't think that it's no thanks to him when you sacked
- 30:27somebody four times in one game, multiple times.
- 30:31I mean, you're doing some work. So he's he's getting some moves
- 30:35that I guess people kind of shortchanged him for when he was
- 30:39at Florida. But thank you Florida.
- 30:41Y'all didn't deserve it. I saw the stat, he's like at
- 30:46what, like about 21 sacks since he became a hokey and I think it
- 30:50as a combined team they have 38. Yeah.
- 30:53Since that time frame. So, yeah, he's facing crazy.
- 30:56He's facing big time. All right, so there's all the
- 30:58stuff that went well. And that was pretty much 55
- 31:02minutes of the game. But I'm a I'm a realist here.
- 31:04What went bad was that 5 minutes in the third quarter.
- 31:08And I mean, OK, first of all, them come out of halftime
- 31:11putting a basically putting a drive together.
- 31:14That's not shocking. That's not shocking, right?
- 31:17Not to a lot of people, especially somebody like Bill
- 31:20O'Brien who has coached a long time.
- 31:22He made some adjustments, right? And they moved down.
- 31:25It was the next few minutes with just some really out of
- 31:28character things from the team and, and I know I have been at
- 31:33baseball. So I'm like following this thing
- 31:35on my phone like this is over. I go down to my neighbor's house
- 31:38down the street here where Brian and Sheldon have both been.
- 31:40They got the fire pit going watching the game.
- 31:43And I sit down, pour Sagamore, pour nice Sagamore whiskey and
- 31:50all that crap happens and I'm like, you gotta be kidding.
- 31:52Am I going to have to like leave?
- 31:55Where were you? Where was y'all's mentality at
- 31:58Sheldon? You were there.
- 31:59Where was your mentality when that happened?
- 32:01Because I mean, the place is buzzing, it's electric.
- 32:05And then 5 minutes like that happened.
- 32:08I was pretty chill honestly. Like I know people kind of
- 32:11flipped out about that, but like it was, it was 2 dumb turnovers.
- 32:14I mean, we gave them essentially, you know, 40 total
- 32:16yards of field position to work with.
- 32:18Like, you know, it's not like I don't think the defense fell
- 32:21apart. I just think, you know, you had
- 32:22a couple critical turnovers and you know, once they once they
- 32:25got past that, they went right back in the field, scored a
- 32:27touchdown, they got the big stop 1/4 down and then boom, that was
- 32:31it. So I think I think for me, you
- 32:33know, I trusted the way they played in the first half.
- 32:34I think, you know, if you're if you're a dominant scrimmage and
- 32:37you know, you're moving the ball downfield consistently, I think
- 32:39you know, you know, eventually the you know, the process will
- 32:42will pay off, so to speak. So, you know, just a couple big
- 32:45mistakes there. It's kind of really all there
- 32:47was to it. But I was I was honestly never
- 32:48really worried that much Cali. I was all right until Curtis got
- 32:53back in the chat like ramp my anxiety up and I I had to put
- 32:59the phone on on charge and stop looking at it if.
- 33:01If y'all don't know about Curt so I'm going to share this real
- 33:05quick before I let you finish tally, but go ahead.
- 33:07All right, so our buddy Pete B likes to live tweet during
- 33:11games. Curtis is basically Pete B that
- 33:15doesn't live tweet during games. Curtis does it.
- 33:19It's it's very high and low. It's very high and low.
- 33:21It's an emotional roller coaster and depending on where you are
- 33:25at the time is going to depend on what type of Curtis you get.
- 33:29Yeah, Curtis is Curtis was he was on one in the in the shout
- 33:33out people. Sheldon was kind of still
- 33:36Sheldon. You know, he's what he's saying
- 33:38most of the time, like whatever is what he does, he's just kind
- 33:43of, I told you all, we're better than them, we're going to win.
- 33:46And I'm like, well, Curtis ain't saying we're going to win.
- 33:48So I'm kind of leaning Curtis's way because I'm watching the
- 33:52game as well. But yeah, no, it was fun though,
- 33:56man. And like you said, we went
- 33:57through that stretch and it was just kind of like, let me see,
- 34:02actually, I had, I had to do something with my son.
- 34:05I had to get him. And I ended up taking him to go
- 34:07get something to eat and we leave to go grab him something
- 34:10to eat. And I come back and it's like,
- 34:13what's happened? It's like a different team, you
- 34:15know? And then we give them, you know,
- 34:172 turnovers and next thing you know, it's like, oh Lord, here
- 34:20we go again. But we overcame.
- 34:24So I was all right with that. Yeah.
- 34:27To, to me, it kind of, I think it kind of started a little bit
- 34:30with the, the, the Colin Schlee call there on that drive opening
- 34:37the second-half. I feel like that kind of fiddled
- 34:40with our mojo a little bit. Then we had another, I think
- 34:43drop on that, on that series that ultimately we ended up
- 34:46getting off the field punting and then they drove down and,
- 34:49and, and did their thing on that first drive.
- 34:51And, you know, then you have a couple mistakes.
- 34:53The next thing you know, 4 scores becomes one score and
- 34:57you're sweating a little bit. To Sheldon's point, I never got
- 35:00worried, but I was definitely like, this is not going to be as
- 35:05pretty as it should be now because of this was these are
- 35:07these are mistakes that you can't make.
- 35:10But at the same time, like I wasn't, I'd seen what we had
- 35:13done in the first half. I thought that if we could just
- 35:16stop the bleeding it it was going to be fine because we've
- 35:19shown that we can handle them at the line of scrimmage.
- 35:22Well, I. Won't give all of I won't give
- 35:24all of the family secrets away, but I want to read some of the
- 35:28the live messages from Curtis during the game we had.
- 35:34Y'all I'm about to leave. This isn't cool y'all.
- 35:39This is stupid. That's all in the course of
- 35:43about two minutes right there, though.
- 35:45I mean it was only 5 minutes. Yeah, I know it was.
- 35:47Probably 12 minutes total time, 5 minutes runtime.
- 35:51Tally, I think it's somewhere in that chain.
- 35:52I literally told you, Tally, I have to do this here so I can be
- 35:57somewhat calm in somewhat here on Tuesday nights.
- 36:01Oh, we're curse was in there somewhere.
- 36:03Oh yeah, we're curse always coming up.
- 36:05That's always coming up. Anytime we do something, we're
- 36:07cursed. I think Tally might have froze
- 36:08on us. I think Tally did freeze on us.
- 36:10He's probably reading the really bad ones right now.
- 36:13But you know what? That's a that's a stylish pose.
- 36:15At first I thought he was like building suspense.
- 36:17Oh yeah. And he was going to look.
- 36:18Up. And then he gets.
- 36:21Moved for 30 seconds. I'm like, not so much.
- 36:23Can I say this, though, about the coaching staff in this team
- 36:27and these players? So we've been down numerous
- 36:30times this year, go back to Vandy and Rutgers.
- 36:32We've had bad things happen like the ODU game.
- 36:37The one thing I think this coaching staff has instilled and
- 36:39even goes back to last year's resiliency amongst the team
- 36:44because you don't see them. They're like Shelton, something
- 36:47bad happens. They don't panic, they aren't
- 36:49losing their minds, they aren't going around doing dumb shit.
- 36:53So effectively that happened and then we just calm down and about
- 36:575 minutes later we stopped them on 4th down touchdown.
- 37:02We stopped them again, three and out touchdown.
- 37:06So the reality is, I hate it. I have to get it out.
- 37:11If I don't get it out, I would lose my mind here on every
- 37:14Tuesday night. I don't think that would be much
- 37:16fun for watching, but when bad things happen, this team and
- 37:21this coaching staff does not panic.
- 37:23And we've now seen that in numerous examples in the last
- 37:26year. Plus, you got one more good one
- 37:29right there. Yeah, one more good one.
- 37:31Or did you put it away? Huh.
- 37:33Are you talking to me? Yeah.
- 37:36Oh no it was just it was just a week cursed and then we cursed
- 37:40laugh out loud after we scored. So no, we cursed and then we
- 37:46still cursed left. The the funniest, the funniest 1
- 37:53was Tally responding. They cursed too then and then
- 37:57and that was after the I think that last turnover they had.
- 38:00You got to love it, got to love it.
- 38:02All right, Just a couple more things as we close out To Tell
- 38:04the truth segment, I think I was not prepared for no field goals.
- 38:09I expected them to stop us at least once.
- 38:12I expected someone to kick. Somebody kick no field goals.
- 38:16Can you make a bet on that on the betting side?
- 38:18So I believe there will be no field goals kicked in this game.
- 38:21Well, they tried. Oh, that's they, I think they
- 38:24tried to run a trick play there. Yeah, because they were, because
- 38:27that guy was moving from the field, like I think they were
- 38:30trying to run a trick play and it just when he bobbled it, they
- 38:33were fucked. So can we just say this too as
- 38:37we move on? We got because we do want to hit
- 38:38a little something, the version of this team since Rutgers, they
- 38:45just got to keep being it and they've got to keep improving
- 38:48because this team that keeps showing up statistically,
- 38:52mentally, physically again, I, I, I think they can stand toe to
- 38:58toe with a lot of good teams in the country.
- 39:01No, I agree. I agree.
- 39:03You're right on, right on point with what you're saying with
- 39:05that, You know what I'm saying? Just what needs to happen moving
- 39:08forward is just, you know, I think we're going to touch over
- 39:10a little bit later too. Just continue like feeding into
- 39:13your identity, you know, like you're seven games in.
- 39:17You know what you can do and you know what you can't do?
- 39:20Feed into that. Yep, I think that's that's been
- 39:23the big thing for us is that, you know, what we've seen since
- 39:26the start of conference play has been a team with an identity on
- 39:29both sides of the football, a team that has been playing, you
- 39:35know, 111 moment or here aside, I think a lot better as a unit.
- 39:41And I'm thinking not just the team itself, but also the way
- 39:45the coaching staff has been during the games.
- 39:48I think I think they've called a better game from a coordinator
- 39:51standpoint. I think Brent Pry has been
- 39:53better from a game management standpoint in that same time
- 39:57stretch as well. So we have an identity now.
- 40:00It's just. About keeping it consistent and
- 40:04putting that best product out every week because we know what
- 40:07the ceiling looks like now, we've seen it.
- 40:09We just got to be consistent with it going forward.
- 40:14So you get anything to add on top of that, anything you got to
- 40:16say we got to keep doing better moving forward.
- 40:20I think we've been bringing it up pretty well and you know, we
- 40:23can talk about this a little bit more depth later on, but I think
- 40:25I think Bowen has added some some complexity to the run game,
- 40:29kind of building off some of that base off they've been doing
- 40:31with like split zone, for instance.
- 40:32So you know, the rushing numbers continue to get better.
- 40:36I think as the offense progresses, the online gets
- 40:38better, you know that there's more synchronization, I guess.
- 40:42So I just, I, I really like the way the office is going kind of
- 40:45set up by the run game and also drones to getting more polished
- 40:49as a passer. Yeah.
- 40:51And I know we've talked about it a couple weeks now and I've
- 40:53talked about it with Sheldon some off air, like what Bowen's
- 40:56doing with motion in the run game in the past.
- 40:59Game is a lot more complex and kind of what I expected from
- 41:03this offense kind of the start of the year.
- 41:05I know you got to you got to, you know, you got to layer some
- 41:08of that in. You can't come out week 1
- 41:10gangbusters show your whole playbook.
- 41:13But what they've been doing with motion has been really clever to
- 41:18getting guys into one-on-one situations in the passing game
- 41:24and also to kind of get the linebackers eyes where they
- 41:27shouldn't be in the run game. All righty, so real quick as we
- 41:32we we get a cap on that right now with Tell the Truth Tuesday.
- 41:36We do want to discuss this. There was a commitment earlier
- 41:39this week and it's another legacy commitment.
- 41:42Brennan Johnson, Big Brother on the team, dad a legend, coach
- 41:47Lauren Johnson's son, 6 foot 190 LB linebacker out of Highland
- 41:51Springs, a three star 87 on 247 composite.
- 41:56I don't think anybody was shocked by this.
- 41:58I think the timing was when it's going to happen.
- 42:02But Brian Talley, I don't know if y'all had a chance to see
- 42:06tape or film on Brennan. A lot of people say he's better
- 42:09than his brother. A lot of people say he's a dog
- 42:11and linebacker. Yeah, he just, when I've watched
- 42:15him the last couple of years, he's moved around to a couple of
- 42:18different spots. I didn't really know what he'd
- 42:20project to play in college just because of kind of the different
- 42:25things he's done in high school. But very, very solid player.
- 42:28I know last year or maybe two years ago, you know, when they
- 42:32talked about him when Braylon was still in high school, they
- 42:36talked about, you know, Brandon a little bit more, just the
- 42:39things that he was able to do on the team.
- 42:42So I know some at that time, some they were talking about him
- 42:45getting a lot more looks than I guess what he's really paid
- 42:49attention to or that he's fed into, you know, moving into a
- 42:53senior year. So was it really a surprise to
- 42:58see him commit? But like you said, kind of
- 43:00timing was OK. When is it going to happen?
- 43:03Because you can't really lose, you know, that type of recruit
- 43:06because you know what happens when we lose that type of
- 43:08recruit? They go somewhere else and we
- 43:10see their name and lights all the time or they come back to
- 43:14lane and or we play them and they end up killing us for 2-3
- 43:17years. So good to see him.
- 43:20It's good to see him commit. Showing anything on Vernon
- 43:25Johnson? Nope.
- 43:29I. See.
- 43:29Nothing. All he's asked.
- 43:31All he's asked. I know you're not recruiting
- 43:33like you once were. All right, Tally, you said you
- 43:35wanted to bring something up real quick before we get over to
- 43:38know the enemy. Yeah, just because we got, you
- 43:41know, got another Virginia recruit.
- 43:44So of course you're looking at, I mean, recruiting's kind of
- 43:48been been LAX for us lately. You know, we kind of had some
- 43:51people already in the boat, so not really been paying
- 43:54attention. But of course we get a new
- 43:55recruit. So the first thing you want to
- 43:56do is, OK, where's the class stack up?
- 43:58You know, where do we stack up in Virginia, Things like that.
- 44:01And so right now I'm looking and nationally we are 46 and
- 44:06recruiting, I think we're right at a 87 on our recruit somewhere
- 44:12around that. And the thing that was more, I
- 44:18guess I don't want to say alarming, but we, we don't have
- 44:22a top 10 recruit. You know what I'm saying?
- 44:25I, I didn't know this, I didn't pay attention to this until now.
- 44:29I thought I went to sleep and we had a couple of top 10 recruits
- 44:32and I woke up and we got none. I think our top recruit is
- 44:35number 13 in Virginia and I'm talking about Virginia recruits.
- 44:39Everybody in the chat if y'all don't know.
- 44:41Composite, 9247. Ring, right.
- 44:44So I think Brett Platterbaum is our top recruit out of Virginia
- 44:49and he is 13 now. So I wanted to ask you guys,
- 44:55what do y'all think about that? Is that a staff problem or is
- 44:59that a ranking problem? Well, well, first of all, Brett
- 45:02Clatterbaugh just a couple months ago was the number eight
- 45:05player in Virginia. Right.
- 45:07And Michael Matthews was the number five player in Virginia,
- 45:11right? So for some reason, they both
- 45:13got their four-star removed and they got bumped down.
- 45:18Christian Evans, I'm sorry, I got tally.
- 45:20You know, I got hot on this. Christian Evans went to the
- 45:23Under Armour camp in Maryland over the summer where all the
- 45:29big time East Coast prospects come, right?
- 45:31Don't know about that camp. It's one of the big ones.
- 45:33He's the fucking in defensive MVP and he gets 0 bump.
- 45:37He's in the 20s still. How is that possible?
- 45:41How, how do you go here and outperform every other elite
- 45:45crew to this camp and you don't even get a pump?
- 45:49I think the thing that was most like crazy to me was to see
- 45:55where Jeff Overton is like he's 32nd in Virginia.
- 46:00Wasn't he like the Gatorade player of the year last year and
- 46:03to go look at his stats this year?
- 46:06I think there was 6 and O, 7 and O.
- 46:08He's still running over people and he gets take it down again.
- 46:14I, I don't understand it. So I had to get it off my chest
- 46:17and ask some people, anybody who's following recruiting in
- 46:20the chat, please let me know what's going on.
- 46:23Anybody who's in the Virginia area in front of the church,
- 46:26anybody who's in Virginia who's who's paying attention to these
- 46:29games a little bit more than I do.
- 46:33What's going on, man? Are these, are these running
- 46:36backs from Virginia that good that over to the 32 and in
- 46:40Virginia? I don't get it.
- 46:42I don't want to say they're against tech because I don't
- 46:45know that, but I'm just saying something.
- 46:47Some don't quite smell right. You know what I'm saying?
- 46:52That milk kind of spoiled me. That's all I'm going to say.
- 46:55Brian, what you feeling about this stuff, man?
- 46:58I'm kind of right there with you.
- 47:00You know, I think it's weird seeing.
- 47:04I think the downgrades are weird.
- 47:06I think the ones that didn't get bumped up like Overton and like
- 47:11Evans is probably the bigger crime.
- 47:15They were already committed. They were already committed so.
- 47:18Yeah, exactly. So you know, it, it's going to
- 47:22be interesting to see that. And I think, you know, rankings
- 47:25matter. We we talk about rankings.
- 47:27Rankings matter to a point, right?
- 47:29But I think this staff has shown a really good job of evaluating
- 47:36talent and evaluating talent for what they're trying to do.
- 47:39So as long as they're getting the guys they want, I care a
- 47:42little bit less. But obviously from a perception
- 47:45standpoint, we're going to talk about rankings.
- 47:49We have to talk about it. So that that's just kind of is
- 47:51what it is. They're always going to be
- 47:53discussed because the numbers are out there.
- 47:57Sheldon, you got anything on this?
- 47:58Yeah, I mean. I don't really.
- 48:00I. I don't pay too much attention
- 48:01to recruit rankings like you used to.
- 48:03I think you know individuals. There's always going to be some
- 48:06politics involved with, you know what a guy's rated.
- 48:08I don't think, you know, it's, it's probably more helpful to
- 48:11look at it from a team perspective, you know, over
- 48:12multiple years. And you know, I was, I was, you
- 48:15know, talking this to a friend who who was pretty good with
- 48:17numbers the other day. Like recruiting rankings are
- 48:19more helpful if you're looking at like 3-4 five year sample
- 48:22sizes in a single season, much less a single player.
- 48:25I just went, I just don't really make too much of it.
- 48:27So I think like Curtis said, the staff is and Brian too, the the
- 48:30staff has done a pretty good job with evaluations to me if they,
- 48:33if they think a kid is worthy, but then you know, he's good
- 48:36enough for me. So I'm just I wouldn't make too
- 48:38much deal about 33*4*5* personally.
- 48:42Well I'm making it about the four-star 247.
- 48:46Y'all better get your shit together.
- 48:49How are you dropping people down?
- 48:52We trying to get up in the top 25 and we looking we have 46
- 48:56well you. Do the math though, you start
- 48:59and I was doing it today after you sent me that message.
- 49:02There's a lot of teams in front of us that have 20 plus recruit,
- 49:06so we're sitting at 17 and 46. Yeah, the average is only a
- 49:10little bit lower than what we want to be at.
- 49:12The 80 sevens where it's like, I think if, if you did that, we're
- 49:14like 31. Yeah, I mean, we want to be at
- 49:16about 80. Our our, our squad.
- 49:18We want to be at about 88. So if we're at 87 1/2, we're in
- 49:22that ballpark, I think. I think the problem is that we
- 49:25we were, we were there. We were at like just below that
- 49:2780. We're like 87.7 and then they.
- 49:30Bumped them down and they the bump down, they bump and you
- 49:33know, it hurts more because you, you get bumped down the two
- 49:36people that are probably waiting the the average up the most.
- 49:39So it you know, it, it hurts a little bit more in that
- 49:43percentage. But I mean, I'm kind of at a
- 49:47point where, you know, like I said earlier, if they're guys
- 49:50that the staff wants and they think they can play every just
- 49:54about every young guy, especially on the defensive side
- 49:56of the ball. But I mean, we're seeing on the
- 49:58offensive side of the ball, everybody they're bringing in
- 50:00has went out there and and had some success on the field.
- 50:04So, you know, and and that's with a team now that is is
- 50:09pretty veteran. So if they're if they're
- 50:13stacking guys behind them that are able to kind of Wally pip
- 50:16some of those guys, especially when injuries happen and things
- 50:18like that, I'm OK with it. All right, tell, I'm going to
- 50:21say one last thing before we do a little break.
- 50:23Read here and bring on rec talk. Woodson was ranked 18th, Woodson
- 50:30was ranked 18th, and there's some players that have been in
- 50:33front of him that he is considerably outperforming,
- 50:37including a couple that went to Penn State.
- 50:38So we'll move on from this and as always, we are brought to you
- 50:43by Count Stanley Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy
- 50:46located at three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 50:50Go see Jeremy and let him entertain you any day of the
- 50:54week. So now we move on to know the
- 50:58Enemy and tonight got a buddy of ours from Rec Talk coming in, so
- 51:02we'll go ahead and pull him in here.
- 51:05How's it going tonight, man? It's going pretty good.
- 51:07How are you guys doing? Hey, I like the AKA there.
- 51:11I got to call Curtis out a little bit.
- 51:13Yeah, there you go. I'm really upset about that and
- 51:15I will never ever let it go. Don't let it go.
- 51:19Ever. You should never let it go.
- 51:21So. You know Curtis has butchered
- 51:24some pretty pretty easy and straightforward names in the
- 51:26past there, so please don't take any direct offense but
- 51:29definitely give him as much shit as possible.
- 51:31Your running back's a nightmare for you, though.
- 51:35How long did it take you to learn to pronounce his name?
- 51:37About about six months 6. Months.
- 51:40It was it was facial. Facial.
- 51:44Oh, it was. It was all bad.
- 51:46Hey, don't, don't, don't ask him to to to say Kelly Lawson,
- 51:49though. Oh God, yeah, I need the
- 51:53pronunciation guy. But nobody Keely Kalai Kelly
- 51:58blew up. I needed one of those those
- 52:00nights. But rec talk, give us a little
- 52:02background on yourself, how you started your podcast, and where
- 52:06folks can find you. So I started mine right right
- 52:09after the game, after we fired Jeff Collins.
- 52:12That's why, if you notice in the chat, it probably didn't make
- 52:14sense to you when you said money down.
- 52:16That was a big thing Jeff Collins did, and I probably have
- 52:1940 hours of content just absolutely hating him and
- 52:23talking about how dumb he is. In fact, I went to North
- 52:26Carolina and I got seats 3 rows back from where he stands and I
- 52:30just yelled at him mercilessly all game.
- 52:33And that last drive we had was great.
- 52:35But I started right after Collins was fired and only thing
- 52:40I've done right is just keep making videos.
- 52:42I don't know how watchable they are but you know you just keep
- 52:47going on and and talking. I mean it takes a certain kind
- 52:50of narcissist to talk for like 2 hours on a live show and and
- 52:53think people are still listening to.
- 52:56That's what I've done. I got to respect that, though.
- 52:59You got to respect that. And, you know, you got to
- 53:01respect the Jeff Collins hate because I can definitely
- 53:05commiserate with what, what they're dealing with.
- 53:08And, and you know, it's UNC's problem now and, and, and it's
- 53:11kind of fun to see the other side of it when it's like, all
- 53:14right, well, that's your problem.
- 53:15I'm going to talk my shit now though because.
- 53:17Yeah. You're catching the end of it,
- 53:19right? Now they're paying that moron
- 53:21$1.1 million a year to give up 70 to JMU and I'm like man, I'd
- 53:27screw up that game for 1/10 of that for you guys.
- 53:30Save you some money. I mean, we need to get into
- 53:33coaching. I think some of you might be,
- 53:35but from the sounds of it, but that's what I need to do, yeah.
- 53:38I've, I've dabbled in the past and I think I could have went
- 53:41out there and called a better game against JMU, but you know.
- 53:44Do the opposite of what you're doing, all one.
- 53:46Right. It keeps sending the same say
- 53:49calls in and they keep scoring touchdowns.
- 53:52Try something else. Tell you would think if he made
- 53:55just picked one play call and stuck with the whole game he
- 53:58wouldn't give up 70 maybe. It's going to work at least like
- 54:0110% of the time you'd think. Yeah, all righty, so let's
- 54:05always fun. Getting a basketball score in a
- 54:06football game. How you?
- 54:08Do they're ready for basketball season, aren't they?
- 54:10Yes, they are. All right, well, let's get into
- 54:13it. Let's talk a little bit about
- 54:14the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets here and let's talk about the
- 54:17offense. And you know y'all got your
- 54:19offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and a name that
- 54:23everybody in Hokie Nation will forever hate as you're Co OC and
- 54:27Chris Winky. Fuck that guy.
- 54:29Fuck him forever. So what I was wondering because
- 54:33when you have one like that and Faulkner's tight ends coach
- 54:37Winky's working with quarterbacks, who is the primary
- 54:39play caller for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the offense?
- 54:42It's interesting because it's changed.
- 54:45So it's definitely Buster Faulkner.
- 54:48Buster Faulkner is definitely the play caller.
- 54:50But when Key was interim and we had Chip Long, Winky actually
- 54:53called the plays for the last half of the season.
- 54:56And if you ask any Tech fan, I mean, Winky is the heir apparent
- 55:00to become the OC. You know, Tech struggled on
- 55:03offense this year. Buster, we had to pay Buster to
- 55:06keep him from going to places like Kentucky or going to an SEC
- 55:10job. But yeah, but Busters play
- 55:13caller going a little rough this season, but we'll we'll see if
- 55:16we can dial something up for the Hokies Saturday, the Tecmo Bowl.
- 55:20There we go. There we go the, the, the two
- 55:23schools that can claim the moniker Tech and, and everybody
- 55:26knows who they're talking about. Let's talk a little bit about
- 55:29the quarterback situation, because that seems to be the one
- 55:31thing that, you know, even in the, the media hype and
- 55:35everything, you got the national media talking about it.
- 55:38You got your coach kind of refuting what the national media
- 55:40saying, You know, what's the story going on at quarterback?
- 55:43Are we going to see Haynes King, who we going to see?
- 55:46Who you think we're going to see?
- 55:50If I was a betting man, I'd say Pyron starts.
- 55:53I mean, you know, King not starting last week was a big
- 55:56deal. And I think as a staff, you
- 55:59don't want to put a 65% King in, have them now have a season
- 56:04ending injury. Now you're guaranteed not to
- 56:06have them when you have a very capable backup.
- 56:09And Zach Pyron, you know, he played against Notre Dame last
- 56:13week. I hate that his first kind of
- 56:14start this year was against Notre Dame with the 4th ranked
- 56:17pass offense in the country. Pretty tough out.
- 56:21You know, he's trying to force some throws to make some plays.
- 56:23But Zach Poweron does have a win in Blacksburg.
- 56:26So he started in his interim year, went to Blacksburg and got
- 56:30a win. And look, he's an elite 11
- 56:32quarterback. He's a veteran guy.
- 56:35There's probably not too many teams that have backups that our
- 56:39veteran like that and I, you know, I have the full confidence
- 56:42in Pyron if and probably when he does start in this game.
- 56:47Yeah, I think everybody else on this show remembers that game,
- 56:51that Pyron went in there and carved us up a little bit.
- 56:54It was a it was a little frustrating to to witness that
- 56:58game and how that went down. And I think we kind of knew then
- 57:01that was kind of I think one of the first big games where you're
- 57:04like, all right, well, this Brent Key might be on to
- 57:06something here as an interim. So, you know, that was a good
- 57:10situation for you guys. And I, I'm, I think, you know, I
- 57:14think your ceilings a lot higher with Haynes King in there.
- 57:17If he's able to go and he's able at least to hit that like 85 or
- 57:2090% mark. But I don't like you said, I
- 57:22don't think they're going to roll him out there at 65% and
- 57:25risk an injury and have him be limited in what he can do
- 57:29because, you know, he does have a, a dynamic skill set as well
- 57:32there. So I'm expecting hiring.
- 57:36Go ahead. I'm sorry.
- 57:37I. Was going to say I'm I'm
- 57:38expecting power to get that start.
- 57:40Yeah, King is definitely a little more fleet footed.
- 57:43I mean, he's like a 4-5 flat type guy.
- 57:47But the thing with Pyron is he's probably a little more
- 57:49consistent throwing, probably has a little more accurate arm.
- 57:54So it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
- 57:59Yeah, Power run is, of course, like you said, he's a no
- 58:03stranger to to come to Blacksburg and fucking stuff up.
- 58:07Yeah, I think it was 2022 that he did.
- 58:10But he's actually a Alabama guy. He's actually a Alabama guy.
- 58:13He was AI don't want to say legend, but he may be close to a
- 58:16legend here in Alabama. He went to a school called
- 58:19Penson Valley. If y'all you know, Tech fans,
- 58:22remember Kenji Christensen. He was his quarterback in high
- 58:25school. They won A state championship
- 58:27together. That's it.
- 58:29That was a 6A school, which is not the biggest division in
- 58:32Alabama, but, you know, closest to the biggest division, 7A is
- 58:35the biggest. So Pinson Valley was at that
- 58:38time pretty much a powerhouse just getting back into kind of
- 58:41his high school stuff. So he's a winner.
- 58:44And I think he went to a smaller school.
- 58:46Yeah. He went to a smaller school
- 58:47called Fife High School. Was more of a country.
- 58:50This is what I'll tell you. I I he went from the most
- 58:54country school in the world and won a state title there to the
- 58:57most hood school or like into the hood school and want to stay
- 59:03titled up. He can fit into anything like he
- 59:05can go anywhere and he can play anywhere and he ain't going to
- 59:08be scared. So he will he go ahead?
- 59:11He ran the triple option at that smaller school I'm pretty sure
- 59:14they run. And then, you know, I've
- 59:18interviewed him on the channel before.
- 59:20I think his dad took him to this other school because I was like,
- 59:22all right, you know, Paul Johnson ain't coaching no more.
- 59:27So maybe we need to go to a school that doesn't run the
- 59:29triple off. You're in Alabama, Tally, you're
- 59:33in Alabama. Yeah, man, I'm, I'm Alabama born
- 59:36and bred. I'm in Huntsville, AL.
- 59:39Nice. Not not far from me then.
- 59:41I'm on the West side of Atlanta. OK, nice.
- 59:44Are you over there? You over there with the with the
- 59:47with the good chicken wings that's in the strip clubs.
- 59:50Yeah, that's actually why I moved there.
- 59:51I was like number one thing, strip club and what's the wing
- 59:56situation at that strip club? I'll go on a Tuesday at 2:00 in
- 59:59the in the afternoon that that does not matter to me.
- 1:00:04Hey, you're a trooper for that man.
- 1:00:06Hey. And if they got good wings, it's
- 1:00:08worth it. It's always worth it.
- 1:00:09Exactly. Don't.
- 1:00:10Matter for the wings either that frozen.
- 1:00:16I'm telling you the the the Internet in Alabama is on 1/2
- 1:00:20night Sheldon what you what you're.
- 1:00:23Trying to take my man down. They are it's it's it's the the
- 1:00:28man is trying to take tally out. Sheldon, what you got concerning
- 1:00:30something you want to know about the offense for the Georgia Tech
- 1:00:33Yellow Jackets? Yeah.
- 1:00:35I mean, I'm kind of just looking over some of the advanced stats.
- 1:00:37I mean, pretty solid for the Yellow Jackets, 36 in EPA per
- 1:00:41rush, 19th in EPA per per passing attempt.
- 1:00:44You know, success rate across the board, pretty good. 39th for
- 1:00:48rushing, 16th for passing. I mean, it seems like it's a
- 1:00:50pretty solid offense overall, 22 points per drive.
- 1:00:54What I guess just go over kind of the biggest strengths and
- 1:00:56maybe the biggest weaknesses of the GT offense right now.
- 1:00:59All right. Well, Shelton, you look a little
- 1:01:00younger, so I'm going to say this.
- 1:01:02No cap when I say this biggest strength of the offense is
- 1:01:07definitely rushing. I mean these these teams are
- 1:01:09similar in their offensive identity.
- 1:01:11You know, you look at Virginia Tech, what are you 16th and pass
- 1:01:15offense and number one in the conference and rush offense.
- 1:01:18Tech's a little more balance, but they definitely look Brink
- 1:01:21he's a guy that wants to run the ball.
- 1:01:23He says that run the ball. Jamal Haynes, a guy that had a
- 1:01:28really good season for tech last year, like their first 1000 yard
- 1:01:31rusters since Paul Johnson was here.
- 1:01:34This year, they've they've been very inconsistent running the
- 1:01:37ball for whatever reason, though, which is surprising when
- 1:01:39you have an offensive line and Ron, I think it sounds like you
- 1:01:42played offensive line. I don't think people give credit
- 1:01:44to how difficult it is to play that position and how important
- 1:01:47chemistry is. But something's something's got
- 1:01:50lost in the sauce for tech this year.
- 1:01:52I think it might just be the people are just going to stack
- 1:01:54the box on tech. If I'm Virginia Tech, that's
- 1:01:56what I'm going to do. Stack the box, make a high run,
- 1:01:59throw, play man coverage on the outside and and see what
- 1:02:02happens. If I'm Virginia Tech, hey, I'm
- 1:02:04not going to let you beat me running Jamal Haynes like I'm
- 1:02:07Jeff Collins at North Carolina on the last play.
- 1:02:10The biggest weakness on Tech's team without a doubt is special
- 1:02:17teams. I mean, it's absolutely killed
- 1:02:19us. Something you don't talk about a
- 1:02:21ton, but how you get your ass beat on the road easily is
- 1:02:27special teams. We've now against Louisville had
- 1:02:29a block kick taken back for a touchdown, a Marion Hampton took
- 1:02:33a kickback against us, should have, should have lost.
- 1:02:36In North Carolina on special team snafus, we take time outs,
- 1:02:40get substitution penalties before punts.
- 1:02:44It's a disaster. And it was a disaster against
- 1:02:46Notre Dame. So that'd be the biggest
- 1:02:48weakness as far as offense, defense weakness.
- 1:02:51It's our pass pass rush and pass defense, which luckily for us,
- 1:02:56you've struggled throwing the ball.
- 1:02:58I think you've got was it Drones has 9 touchdowns on five picks.
- 1:03:03I think you're near, I think you're 16th and pass offense
- 1:03:06too. But that's what kind of makes it
- 1:03:08an interesting, interesting matchup is that we kind of clash
- 1:03:11it. We we both kind of want to do
- 1:03:13similar things. Hope that answers your question.
- 1:03:16Yeah, for sure. And and just so I just can't
- 1:03:18confirm, looking at the numbers, Georgia Tech does rank 122nd and
- 1:03:22special teams efficiency according to FBI.
- 1:03:24So the numbers do bear that out. It has been a rough go for the
- 1:03:27jackets on. Teams.
- 1:03:29Talk. It's not all in your head.
- 1:03:31Yeah, I. Love being a tech guy.
- 1:03:35The numbers have confirmed what I can see with my lion eyes.
- 1:03:40Let me ask this, go back to the offense before we get on the
- 1:03:42defensive side of the ball, but I'm looking here.
- 1:03:46Y'all got 2 main targets and that's Rutherford and Singleton.
- 1:03:51You know, they're basically almost half the completed passes
- 1:03:55goes either one of those guys. Which one of those two guys do
- 1:03:59you like in this matchup versus Virginia Tech?
- 1:04:03Well, it depends. Do you like your linebacker
- 1:04:05play? Do you like, do you feel
- 1:04:07confident in your linebackers and coverage?
- 1:04:12Depends on which one you talked about.
- 1:04:13Depends on which one you're talking about.
- 1:04:15There's there's three, so we're going to try and.
- 1:04:17Take advantage of the weaker 1 so.
- 1:04:18Yeah, yeah. So probably not not not great.
- 1:04:22Not great. Yeah, we don't.
- 1:04:23See Malik, I'd say Malik Rutherford then.
- 1:04:26Now, if you look at the like passing efficiency of Haines
- 1:04:31King, it's like set. It was like 75% at one point.
- 1:04:34Very deceptive. We like to throw the ball behind
- 1:04:37the scrimmage a lot or five yards and a lot of screens, a
- 1:04:40lot of quick throws. And we've done that a lot to
- 1:04:42Malik where he just, you know, we we cross block it or crack
- 1:04:46block it. I don't think you can call it
- 1:04:48crack block anymore. You kind of rub up against the
- 1:04:50guy without killing them nowadays.
- 1:04:52But I like Malik in that matchup.
- 1:04:54Singleton junior was a true was a freshman All American last
- 1:04:59year crack *10200m guy. We just have not done well with
- 1:05:05Hanes King throwing down the field.
- 1:05:07However I think Pyron can do better.
- 1:05:10But what you're yeah you're past.
- 1:05:13Your secondary is pretty cracked though so probably won't go that
- 1:05:17route. Probably rather go with Malik
- 1:05:19there. Yeah.
- 1:05:19And you got one of our linebackers, Kiante Jenkins is
- 1:05:22effectively, he plays an outside linebacker spot, but he's coming
- 1:05:25over from playing safety. So that's where it's like when
- 1:05:29when we talk about some of those slot guys that, you know, you
- 1:05:32watch with all the defenses, right?
- 1:05:34Like there's usually a converted safety doing something near the
- 1:05:37line of scrimmage. And sometimes if they're really
- 1:05:40good, they can they can lock up a slot receiver if they suck
- 1:05:45slots eat all day. And it's crazy to say.
- 1:05:48That that's exposed. Yeah.
- 1:05:50And I mean, outside we're pretty good with Delane and Strong.
- 1:05:54So if if we get into those situations, it sounds like what
- 1:05:58you're telling me is that what we're going to need to do do
- 1:06:01good is track the slot in the in the running back and tackle
- 1:06:05well, because they're going to get the ball quickly in space.
- 1:06:08And we're going to need to tackle to avoid getting into
- 1:06:11those, you know, 2nd and short, 3rd and short situations.
- 1:06:14Because I mean this, this is a defense for the Hokies that
- 1:06:17thrives on getting into second and third down and long where we
- 1:06:22can send our defensive line after your quarterback.
- 1:06:25Yeah, and boy, was it Powell Rylan is is a hoss.
- 1:06:30What? What is, is he a junior?
- 1:06:32What is his class? He's a senior.
- 1:06:35He's a senior, yeah. So you see many more He's.
- 1:06:38Going to go pretty high in the draft then.
- 1:06:40I think he's leading the conference in sacks, tackles for
- 1:06:43loss, a lot of different stats. Yeah, he's, he's number one in
- 1:06:47the country right now, actually. So he took over that moniker
- 1:06:51this week. Actually, he was 5th going into
- 1:06:53Thursday and by the close of Saturday he was number 1.
- 1:06:56So he had four against Boston College there.
- 1:06:59And just, I mean, he's been, he's been as advertised really
- 1:07:03start to finish that so far this year.
- 1:07:05And, you know, we're really excited about what that
- 1:07:07defensive line has done as a whole, especially when it comes
- 1:07:09to getting after the passer. It'll be interesting, George.
- 1:07:12I think Tech's only given up two or three sacks all year.
- 1:07:16I mean, they're near the top of the country and given sacks up.
- 1:07:18So be interesting to see that match up Tech, you know, likes
- 1:07:22to run the RPO game, which is really the modern day version of
- 1:07:26the triple option. So we might just work on taking
- 1:07:28him out of some plays and you know, maybe some other guys can
- 1:07:31make some plays but decided to see it.
- 1:07:35Yeah, they did that a little bit with Vandy when we played Vandy.
- 1:07:38So I'm I'm imagining there's going to be a little bit of that
- 1:07:41mixed in as well, trying to neutralize him as much as
- 1:07:45possible. Like I said, that's why first
- 1:07:47down is so important for Virginia Tech from a defensive
- 1:07:49standpoint, because if we can get you in long situations on
- 1:07:522nd and 3rd, that's when we can, you know, really do the things
- 1:07:55that we like to do. Oh yeah, I did.
- 1:07:58I did also confirm real quick Haynes King, 30.7% of his passes
- 1:08:03this year have been behind on scrimmage.
- 1:08:04That's tied with Quinn viewers from most of the Power 4.
- 1:08:06So yes, lots of big, big heavy dose, short, short.
- 1:08:09Quick. Why is the SBM not hired to you,
- 1:08:12Sheldon? Like you're just like a machine
- 1:08:15with these stats, man. Like I think just.
- 1:08:18I'm just a monkey on a keyboard, man.
- 1:08:19I'm I'm typing. Away.
- 1:08:21We're not golfing. You don't have to sandbag me or
- 1:08:24nothing. We're not.
- 1:08:27And that does make a lot of sense with the number of sacks.
- 1:08:30Passing that much time behind the line of scrimmage tells you
- 1:08:32y'all want to get that ball out quick, quick, quick.
- 1:08:35Let's flip over to the tackle guys.
- 1:08:37Yeah, got to tackle, got to tackle, be nice behind the line
- 1:08:39of scrimmage a lot. Let's talk about your defense
- 1:08:41next, though. Obviously Santucci's your DC,
- 1:08:43but obviously so much of this is coming from Brent Key and you
- 1:08:47know what he's instilled there. And you know, I've got some
- 1:08:51really good players, but the one that jumped out to me was
- 1:08:54Trenelius Tatum. I hope I butchered that as well
- 1:08:57as I did your show's name there. By some miracle you pronounced
- 1:09:02it correct, so. I win.
- 1:09:05Everybody golf. Clap for Curtis.
- 1:09:06Everybody golf clap on that because man, when I look.
- 1:09:09At Curtis. Not only some of the some of the
- 1:09:11tape and you know, watching him in a few games this year, but
- 1:09:14also his stat lines. He seems like he is everywhere
- 1:09:17at all times. Is he?
- 1:09:20Do you consider him your best defensive player or what do you
- 1:09:24think? No, I mean, he's a guy that's
- 1:09:27that's been there a while, got a lot of experience and look, he's
- 1:09:29made some good plays for us. The the killer in this game for
- 1:09:34Tech is that Kyle Efford will most likely be out too.
- 1:09:39He was. He injured his shoulder at UNCI.
- 1:09:42Think he said he's practicing a black jersey, but that was our
- 1:09:45most surefire run stopper, which is 100% what Tech needs in this
- 1:09:50game, so he's probably been. Hey, let me ask a question.
- 1:09:54Good. Who was the dude in the first
- 1:09:56game that looked like a made-up linebacker?
- 1:10:00Was that him? Was that the Kyle kid?
- 1:10:02With the with the cowboy collar. On Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:10:05Yeah, that that's him. I don't know why that's made a
- 1:10:07comeback. It went out of style for like 10
- 1:10:09years and now they're back. But yeah.
- 1:10:11Y'all go look him up in that first game that that Georgia
- 1:10:13Tech played and see if you want us to play against him.
- 1:10:16No, we don't want to play against him.
- 1:10:18Because he looked like he looked.
- 1:10:20Like one of them boys off the program.
- 1:10:22The movie, and I think he was on steroids that first game, so I'm
- 1:10:28just saying. He looks, he looks.
- 1:10:31Like a linebacker dog. Yeah, it's part of our nutrition
- 1:10:34program. That's right.
- 1:10:35Hey. You got to you got to do what
- 1:10:36you got to do and you know, have, I think, you know, when
- 1:10:40you look at that, you know, Eford is definitely a guy that,
- 1:10:45you know, from your perspective, sounds like he can impact the
- 1:10:47game if he's not able to go, You know, what do you guys look like
- 1:10:54outside? Because I mean, you know, you
- 1:10:55talked about that may be an area where we can exploit, but it's
- 1:10:59also an area where we haven't necessarily been as dynamic as
- 1:11:02we want to be. If we're throwing outside, if
- 1:11:04we're throwing down the field, who's going to be the guy that
- 1:11:07can make some plays? Who We've been pretty awful
- 1:11:11defending the past. The stats don't necessarily show
- 1:11:14that. Are just the straight ACC
- 1:11:16rankings of like total past defense.
- 1:11:19I think we only have like 2 picks on the year, so only two
- 1:11:22takeaways. And really that a lot of that
- 1:11:26comes down to our pass rush is just flat out awful.
- 1:11:30We just do not get after the quarterback that I mean, look, a
- 1:11:34good quarterback. Like who's the guy for Syracuse?
- 1:11:38Kyle McCord, he, he almost had 300 yards before half.
- 1:11:41It's just because we couldn't get to them.
- 1:11:43So that you know, if you look at I, when I preview the games and
- 1:11:49I'll, I'll record 1 after this for tomorrow.
- 1:11:53If I, I like to think of what is 1 stat I could get from the game
- 1:11:57that I think would tell me who won it.
- 1:11:59It might, it might be the passing yards for Virginia Tech.
- 1:12:03If you can really balance your run with being able to throw on
- 1:12:07us like most people do, Tooting's going to have a
- 1:12:10monster day because then because then we can't just commit,
- 1:12:13commit to the run. We we do have some experience
- 1:12:17there, the Miles Brooks at safety, Clayton Powell, Lee,
- 1:12:20Amari Harvey. It's just we get in positions to
- 1:12:23make plays and we don't make plays a lot of times and it's
- 1:12:27just tough. Yeah, and and you said it just a
- 1:12:30second ago about the pass rush, your eyes ain't fooling. 126th
- 1:12:34in the country in team sacks. So, you know, and obviously if
- 1:12:41that's happening, I know Shelton wants to bring this up now, he's
- 1:12:44got a little something on the secondary there.
- 1:12:46But obviously if you're not getting past rush, you could
- 1:12:49have an elite secondary. It's just it's not going to show
- 1:12:51at all points in time. Sheldon, what you got, man?
- 1:12:55Yeah, looking over the defensive numbers, I think the biggest
- 1:12:58bugaboo has been, you know, the past defense.
- 1:13:01Right now Georgia Tech is 103rd 114th in drop back success rate
- 1:13:06against, you know, right at 4043% there.
- 1:13:10Why do you think it is that the secondary has struggled?
- 1:13:13The secondary, yeah, I mean, I think we're talking about it.
- 1:13:16I mean a big part is they can only cover for so long.
- 1:13:18I don't care how good of a corner you are, if you're manned
- 1:13:21up, there's only so long you can cover them or in zone.
- 1:13:23We've really, we've really done better playing man because I
- 1:13:26think that simplifies things for your backs a little more.
- 1:13:29Hey, that's my guy. As opposed to playing zone and
- 1:13:32really feeling where's the quarterback looking in your
- 1:13:35periphery, you know, what are the wide receivers doing?
- 1:13:38I got crossers coming. I need to step up or whatever.
- 1:13:42And he talked about it a lot in the press conference.
- 1:13:44I think a lot of its confidence too.
- 1:13:46I don't think we're just untalented in the secondary.
- 1:13:50I think when you get lit up game after game, you kind of have
- 1:13:53this impending doom feeling where it's like, man, it like
- 1:13:56here it goes again. They just dropped a, you know,
- 1:13:5835 yard throw on us. Here we go again.
- 1:14:01So I think, I think it's a little both of those.
- 1:14:04Yeah, we know what I'm. Saying right here.
- 1:14:05We know that feeling, but most of the time with Virginia Tech
- 1:14:08is, oh Lord, the quarterback just scrambled for 35 yards
- 1:14:13again that. Happens to you when you're not
- 1:14:18rushing the passer very well. I can almost guarantee you,
- 1:14:21you're not being very disciplined in pass rush lanes
- 1:14:24where a mobile quarterback can step up and not be touched for,
- 1:14:27you know, 8-9 yards either that that's happened a lot.
- 1:14:32Yeah, And just kind of feeding off that, I think, you know,
- 1:14:35when we look at, you know, what Kyron drones can do against this
- 1:14:39defense, you know, if we say the the over under sitting there at
- 1:14:432:15 and we hit the over, what you're telling me is you
- 1:14:45probably like the chances of that being a hokey win.
- 1:14:48I'd say 90% likely you're winning the game.
- 1:14:51Well at 2:15, I put it at 2:50. If he throws for more than 250,
- 1:14:56I would say, I would say 98% likely all we are winning this
- 1:15:00game. I mean, he's had some good games
- 1:15:03here, especially get Stanford, who I think from a defensive
- 1:15:07passing efficiency standpoint was probably about in the same
- 1:15:10ballpark as Georgia Tech. If we can do that and and still
- 1:15:15have some success on the ground, then I think I think we're
- 1:15:17putting ourselves in a pretty good position there.
- 1:15:20So it's going to come down to that.
- 1:15:21And I think, you know, Sheldon has spoken to it to a point.
- 1:15:25You know, Kyron's had a pretty good amount of success against
- 1:15:28man, he's gotten better against throwing against the zone.
- 1:15:33So we'll see if we can get some consistency in this game and
- 1:15:36give give a good compliment to what we can do in the running
- 1:15:38game with with Tooting there. Yeah, and I don't.
- 1:15:43I'm sure Shelton, you've got the stats sitting right above you
- 1:15:46somewhere. I don't.
- 1:15:47I think the last time we dropped a game beyond Blacksburg was
- 1:15:512012. Whatever reason we played well
- 1:15:54in got it. You knew it.
- 1:15:56Of course you did. Well, to be fair, I saw, I saw a
- 1:15:59Twitter graphic earlier today and I was like, yeah, it's been.
- 1:16:02But they've only played three times though, or maybe four
- 1:16:04times I think. Yeah, 20. 12.
- 1:16:07In Blacksburg, yeah. Yeah, and.
- 1:16:09Bill Bill Roth dropped it out there.
- 1:16:10I think the there's only been like what, one home victory in
- 1:16:15this matchup in like the last 15 years or something like that.
- 1:16:18Like, yeah, I was, I was at that game.
- 1:16:20I was at Bobby Dodd Stadium when it happened.
- 1:16:22I think it was 20. No, I think it was 2017.
- 1:16:28Greg Stroman. Greg Stroman picked one off and
- 1:16:30took it back. And then I think we only, I
- 1:16:33think that was the year Cam Phillips was that guy.
- 1:16:36And they they beat us at Bobby Dodd.
- 1:16:38And I was there and I was sad, yeah.
- 1:16:42Was it 09 when you all ranked 4th?
- 1:16:45And y'all, I know y'all had a really mobile quarterback.
- 1:16:48We, we pulled one out at Bobby Dodd.
- 1:16:50I think Gailey might even been our coach.
- 1:16:51It's been a while, I just remember being that.
- 1:16:54Curtis is is dialing back in the history books, I think.
- 1:16:57Yeah, let me get to history books here.
- 1:17:00I always, the one that always stands out to us and we can do a
- 1:17:02little history is the Calvin Johnson year because we were a
- 1:17:06significantly better team than y'all and we could not cover
- 1:17:10that specimen on the field that day.
- 1:17:13That was O that was O 6 because I got to attend the 2005 game.
- 1:17:20Go look at that one wreck talk. That was game day was on site
- 1:17:24and that was an absolute. I'm sure you probably drink a
- 1:17:27lot that day because of the ass whipping that was put on because
- 1:17:31that was an ugly game and I was blacked out in the stands.
- 1:17:35Well, I mean, Calvin, to be fair, Calvin Johnson, if you
- 1:17:38just created a wide receiver in Madden and maxed all his stats
- 1:17:44out, you would get something like Calvin Johnson.
- 1:17:46I mean, the dude's just a freaking I'm, I'm pissed at the
- 1:17:50lines to this day for screwing his career up in the pros. 100%
- 1:17:55Korea. And you're right, it was 2009.
- 1:17:59Tyrod Taylor was the quarterback that year, so.
- 1:18:03And I think Roman Reigns was the one bringing him to the ground.
- 1:18:07Oh my God. He's crazy.
- 1:18:10It might have been before that, actually.
- 1:18:11I don't know. I know Joanna White played here.
- 1:18:15Yes, he did. No, he he was.
- 1:18:16That would have been about the time frame for him.
- 1:18:17Yeah, I don't know if it was late game, but he was definitely
- 1:18:20that time. It was that time frame for him.
- 1:18:23Pretty crazy to think about it. Well, man, listen, we want you
- 1:18:26to go ahead, tell everybody where they can find you.
- 1:18:28If you got YouTube channel, Twitter, rec talk, where can
- 1:18:31they find you and anything special you're talking about as
- 1:18:34you record this evening? Yeah, so the YouTube channel is
- 1:18:38Rec Talk, not Rec Tech. If you search Rec Tech, I don't
- 1:18:42know what will come up, but it's probably not me.
- 1:18:45I'm at at Rec under score Talk on Twitter because my other one
- 1:18:49got hacked by like sex bots. I don't know if that says about
- 1:18:52anything about what I search on the Internet, but hey, yeah, so
- 1:18:56it's at Rec under score Talk. I'll do a preview video this
- 1:18:59week. I do power rankings every week,
- 1:19:02usually on Monday. I'll be picking the spread
- 1:19:06probably tomorrow, the day after.
- 1:19:09And a caveat with that, if you want to speed run the poor
- 1:19:12house, go ahead and bet a lot on sports.
- 1:19:14I don't do it and you shouldn't either.
- 1:19:16But yeah, so I should have those coming out probably.
- 1:19:19Sea Dog and I will be streaming this game Saturday on his
- 1:19:24channel. If you just look up Sea Dog,
- 1:19:26you'll see us both probably losing our minds.
- 1:19:29Usually my voice is like an octave lower after those games
- 1:19:32because I don't know about you guys.
- 1:19:34I take it hard. I mean, I take it hard.
- 1:19:37Not as hard as it used to be, but you sound like me in our
- 1:19:40text chain during games. Curtis, Curtis is we talked
- 1:19:46about earlier, Curtis is a roller coaster ride during
- 1:19:49games. You got, you got to ride the
- 1:19:51waves, you got to ride the waves.
- 1:19:52You got you got to hope that that they turn it around because
- 1:19:56sometimes Curtis, anytime we're playing bad, we're the worst
- 1:19:59team in the ACC. No country, not even the ACC
- 1:20:02country. But listen, rec talk, man.
- 1:20:05We appreciate you taking a little bit of your time tonight
- 1:20:07to talk a little Georgia Tech with us.
- 1:20:09Nice meeting you man. And, and again, as everybody we
- 1:20:12see, maybe one day we make it to Atlanta, you make it to
- 1:20:16Blacksburg, we'll meet up and say what's up, have a beer
- 1:20:18together. Can't do, man.
- 1:20:19I tell you what, y'all. Come on down, Tally.
- 1:20:21I'll take you to the cheetah. You know what I'm talking about,
- 1:20:24all right? Babe, thanks.
- 1:20:28Have a good one, thanks. For your saying that, appreciate
- 1:20:30it Tally it's only two and a half hour drive, right?
- 1:20:34Oh yeah, I'll be over there all the time, man.
- 1:20:36That's it. Whenever we play down there.
- 1:20:39Got to love it, got to love it. The Kyle effort thing must have
- 1:20:42just came out because I was looking up about effort.
- 1:20:45That's big for them because that guy's got 50 plus tackles.
- 1:20:49So losing him is definitely could open up some things for
- 1:20:52the run game because the Shelton point, they don't have a good
- 1:20:54pass T, but they do have pretty good run D.
- 1:20:57So let's flip it over. Let's talk about some hokey keys
- 1:21:00before we give our predictions. Shelton, what is your key this
- 1:21:05weekend? Man, why did it have to go
- 1:21:08first? Because Kali gets mad when I
- 1:21:13pick him. You put me on the spot.
- 1:21:17I don't know. I think I would say defensively
- 1:21:22I I'd focus there, just, you know, make sure you pressure the
- 1:21:25QB. I think, you know, get off
- 1:21:27blocks. Again, like we talked about,
- 1:21:29this is a Georgia Tech team that really loves to, you know, work
- 1:21:31the short game. So you got to, you know, make
- 1:21:33sure you're getting off blocks, you know, attacking downhill,
- 1:21:35being physical and just, you know, you know, run into the
- 1:21:38ball carrier. That's that's the biggest for
- 1:21:40the defense. I think, you know, Georgia Tech
- 1:21:42has some holes on defense, but it's the offense for GT that I'm
- 1:21:46a little bit more concerned about.
- 1:21:47So just try to, you know, try to limit their short passing game.
- 1:21:50Got it, Tally, Just because that's up for you there.
- 1:21:54Hey. The lemon pepper wings at the
- 1:21:56strip club are always lemon pepper wet.
- 1:21:58Yeah, so you know what? You know what damn it, we done
- 1:22:02had a lot of stuff going on on this show and I've been writing
- 1:22:05down stuff that y'all been doing over here today and y'all need
- 1:22:08to get your acts together. Talking about wings being wet at
- 1:22:12the at the strip club. That's that's something that I'm
- 1:22:16going to talk to Jack about. That's number one, Sheldon said
- 1:22:20bugaboo earlier he. Did say you know.
- 1:22:23He said Bugaboo earlier. I heard it, Brian said.
- 1:22:27Gangbuster. You know, I don't know how to
- 1:22:30feel about Brian saying Gangbuster and talking about wet
- 1:22:34wings at a club. There's a lot going on.
- 1:22:37He also said Curtis was a roller coaster ride.
- 1:22:39I am a roller coaster ride. What's going?
- 1:22:41On that might be a shirt, right? Hey, what?
- 1:22:43I'll put your my heads. Hey, man.
- 1:22:46Y'all need to go to church? On tally, said pause.
- 1:22:49What is going on today? And last but not least, Rick
- 1:22:52Talk said he takes it hard. He said it a couple of times.
- 1:22:56This show's got a little while today.
- 1:22:58I'm going to ring it back in. Really.
- 1:23:00Back in? Bring it.
- 1:23:01Back in Cal, what's the key? Key to US winning is to stay
- 1:23:05ugly. We need to be ugly.
- 1:23:07We don't need to get cute. You know, every time we get
- 1:23:10cute, we do something stupid. I think last week we had it
- 1:23:13rolling. We put the backup quarterback in
- 1:23:15to try to do something. We lost some yards and then some
- 1:23:18crazy stuff start happening. Hey, the stuff that's working,
- 1:23:22let's just keep it working. Let's get just stay ugly.
- 1:23:25Let's just be us. That's what I think all.
- 1:23:28Right, Bron? Siegel, continue to be who you
- 1:23:32are, man. I think we finally showed what
- 1:23:35this team is capable of. I think we've seen it
- 1:23:38consistently the last really three weeks, you know,
- 1:23:41back-to-back here that we've had a game.
- 1:23:44That's the team that I expected to start a year and just keep
- 1:23:47being that team. If you keep being that team, you
- 1:23:50know everybody in front of you is pretty much on the table for
- 1:23:52AW, so that's what you got to do. 100% And my key is treat to
- 1:23:58back up like a starter, treat Zach like he's saying he's team
- 1:24:03and I think maybe the best thing going in that is what he did in
- 1:24:062022 here. He did not have a great game
- 1:24:08coming in that week, but he beat us.
- 1:24:11And I think sometimes just show the film like this guy can come
- 1:24:14down here and win. Don't think he's a backup.
- 1:24:17Go out there, hit him as hard as you would hit Haynes King.
- 1:24:20Make him pay for his runs. He decides to hold it on to an
- 1:24:23extra second, strip the ball from him.
- 1:24:25So do not act like that. He is a backup quarterback.
- 1:24:29All right, let's get to the predictions here.
- 1:24:32And you know what? I'm going to go first this week
- 1:24:35because you know y'all let me run the controls and I am going
- 1:24:38to go with a Hokies win. I don't think it's going to
- 1:24:41quite be the blowout like last week.
- 1:24:43I do not think we're going to cover this, but I think we're
- 1:24:45going to win 27 to 18, Going to have a couple big ones.
- 1:24:51I know we know talking about that rush defensive theirs
- 1:24:54without the man in the middle and even if he comes in, y'all
- 1:24:58know if you have some sort of injury, there's going to be
- 1:25:02something limited. So in that case, we're on Adam.
- 1:25:04Give me 2718 pokies. Hang on for A2 score Win Brian.
- 1:25:12I got us winning, I got us covering.
- 1:25:14Give me 3420 Hokies. I think we go out there and take
- 1:25:17care of business. I think that we are going to see
- 1:25:20similar type of success through the air and on the ground like
- 1:25:23we saw again Stanford. I think it is going to be a
- 1:25:25pretty balanced 1. I think we will have a little
- 1:25:27bit more success in the running game that we had against
- 1:25:29Stanford. But overall, I think we handled
- 1:25:32that business for four quarters. 3420 Hokies.
- 1:25:36Yep, and actually it was 9 1/2 so something else has changed
- 1:25:39because the spreads went up to 11 1/2 now so I did not know
- 1:25:44that I thought it was at 9:00, so I'm not covering Brian still
- 1:25:46got covering Sheldon. What about you?
- 1:25:48I'll. Take Vt 27 to 17.
- 1:25:52I think augments will be fine. I just don't.
- 1:25:55I don't trust GT with their quarterback situation.
- 1:25:58They'll they'll get a couple touchdowns but that's it.
- 1:25:59So Hoagies won't quite cover, but I do believe it will be the
- 1:26:03first time in the Brent pie era that the Hokies do not win by 17
- 1:26:06or more points. All right, John Talley.
- 1:26:10Hey, man, I told you I got to stay true to it.
- 1:26:13I'm going Georgia Tech. I'm going to keep doing it.
- 1:26:15Locker room material, Georgia Tech.
- 1:26:18I say it's going to be a close game.
- 1:26:20Until we prove we can win those games consistently, I'm going to
- 1:26:24continue saying it. Again, I hate to say it, but if
- 1:26:29it keeps us winning, I'm going to say it every week.
- 1:26:31So we'll go. Georgia Tech 27/27/21 Georgia
- 1:26:36Tech. All right, there we go. 2721
- 1:26:40Jonathan Talley, there are our predictions.
- 1:26:43Feel free put your predictions in the comment section.
- 1:26:46All right, let's turn it on. Let's go to big screeners where
- 1:26:53last week, other than me and Tally Tally, we didn't have a
- 1:26:57good week, man. You got 2 right?
- 1:26:59I got one right. Everybody else was 500.
- 1:27:02I got the money one right. I did get the the song game,
- 1:27:06right. That's the only one.
- 1:27:08But as of right now, pretty much everybody's pretty much a coin
- 1:27:12flip except Brian. He's slightly better than a coin
- 1:27:15flip. So if you got your money, put it
- 1:27:18with Brian. Maybe, maybe not.
- 1:27:21All right, so we got to begin. We'll get into the the week of
- 1:27:26college football when we get to choose these.
- 1:27:28It's actually it's actually becoming more difficult because
- 1:27:32there are so many good games on the slate every week, like
- 1:27:35pivotal games for potential conference championships, rank
- 1:27:39matchup, rivalry games. So let's start it this week.
- 1:27:42Brian Siegler, where are you travelling us to?
- 1:27:46College Station, baby, LSU, Texas A&M, A&M's got that, that
- 1:27:522 1/2 there. And you know what?
- 1:27:55I haven't really liked what I've seen overall from this A&M
- 1:27:59squad. LSUI think it's been a little
- 1:28:01more consistent. So I'm actually going to take
- 1:28:04LSU to cover here and take the win outright.
- 1:28:08All righty, I'm, I'm going to get the exact opposite of you.
- 1:28:11I I think Texas A&M is slowly finding their identity under
- 1:28:14Elko. LSU help me beat the Ole Miss,
- 1:28:20but they are not in Death Valley.
- 1:28:21That is going to be a Saturday night game down at Kyle Field
- 1:28:25late 2 1/2. I think first of all, get ready
- 1:28:28for a fun game. I think you know, there's always
- 1:28:31games like watch this game. It's going to be entertaining.
- 1:28:33I think this is going to be an entertaining game, but A&M slips
- 1:28:37it by like 6 points at the end to beat LSU.
- 1:28:41Sheldon. I'll take A&M.
- 1:28:44Normally this would be let down here for the Aggies, but I feel
- 1:28:46like this the first time in a while the Texas and Ms. had a
- 1:28:48real head coach. I love what Elko's doing, so I
- 1:28:50think he's got his boys ready all.
- 1:28:53Right, Kelly? I'm a big Elko fan and not a
- 1:28:57Brian Kelly fan but I am AI think his name is Weeks for LSU
- 1:29:03the linebacker. He is a monster and every time
- 1:29:07I've seen to bet against LSU they found a way to win.
- 1:29:10So I'm going to go LSU this week all.
- 1:29:13Right, Tally goes LSU, our wonderful rider Miranda goes LSU
- 1:29:17and the music Man says LSU as well.
- 1:29:21All righty, I am next on this and I am going to Thursday night
- 1:29:26where Matt Berry's trying to stay out there.
- 1:29:28Pitt, you got a lot to live up to.
- 1:29:30First of all, Matt, Pitt is not going to live up to the
- 1:29:32atmosphere or the excitement that you got on campus and in
- 1:29:36Lane Stadium. So please notate that you're not
- 1:29:39going to get that anywhere else. Pitt, Syracuse is actually a
- 1:29:42pretty big game within the ACC Pitt currently undefeated,
- 1:29:46Syracuse only with one loss. So for this one, I think
- 1:29:53Syracuse is going to beat Pit. I think they going to make Pit
- 1:29:57eat shit pimp for some reason and shell, maybe I'm I'm just
- 1:30:02making it up. I just yes, they're unbeaten,
- 1:30:04but it's just like it may be the most unimpressive 6 and O in the
- 1:30:08country. Maybe, maybe not, but it's yeah,
- 1:30:11look, look it up, see if it's one of the most unimpressive 6
- 1:30:14and O's in the country. I know they're big wins West
- 1:30:17Virginia, but I'm taking Syracuse.
- 1:30:19Give me the point. Syracuse wins outright.
- 1:30:22Curtis, I'm going to piggyback on that and say that these
- 1:30:25teams, both teams have really good records and neither of them
- 1:30:29are impressive in my opinion, the five and one or the six and
- 1:30:33O, But in this case, Pitt needs to eat some shit.
- 1:30:36So that's what I'm going with. Yeah, this was a this was a
- 1:30:40tough game to pick. I mean, I took Syracuse, but
- 1:30:42man, I'm, I just, I do not feel good at all about it.
- 1:30:45And I did confirm Pitt has the the lowest SP plus ranking of
- 1:30:48all the undefeated teams in the power floor.
- 1:30:50So, you know, they're, they've won 39 barely.
- 1:30:54Oh damn, they're not even in the top.
- 1:30:56Well, they're, well, actually, no, sorry.
- 1:30:57They were 30th. So offense is 39.
- 1:30:59So I mean, they've been, they've been kind of, you know, fringe,
- 1:31:01you know, top 30 teams. But I just, I don't know.
- 1:31:05I mean, they've had some breaks go away, so I'll take Syracuse.
- 1:31:09Yeah, I'm going to go Syracuse as well.
- 1:31:11Again, I'm kind of like Brian. I mean, I think both teams are
- 1:31:15solid teams, but, you know, not the hype that kind of most
- 1:31:20people were kind of throwing out.
- 1:31:21But I think Syracuse wins this just because I need Pitt to
- 1:31:25lose. So we're going to go.
- 1:31:27We're going to go Syracuse. There we go.
- 1:31:31Miranda's riding with us, guys. Jason is going the other way.
- 1:31:36He's he's taking the Panthers here.
- 1:31:38I hope you're wrong, Jason, so I'm going to let you know that
- 1:31:40right now. Shelton Moss, where are you
- 1:31:43going this. Week Let's Go game day is going
- 1:31:47to Indiana for the first time ever after we got Cal a couple
- 1:31:50weeks ago. My goal is for What is that?
- 1:31:54Does that mean the only place of the Power 5 to never host is it?
- 1:31:58Is it official now? No, it's not official.
- 1:32:00There's still like. Five.
- 1:32:02That's 5. Yeah, like they've never been to
- 1:32:05Syracuse, but a couple others. But my goal is for everyone to
- 1:32:08host except for UVA. That'd be that'd be a admirable,
- 1:32:12most admirable. Yes, yes.
- 1:32:15So, but anyways, I think this will be a really fun match up.
- 1:32:17There is some uncertainty with Andy and his QB.
- 1:32:19That being said, I will take Washington because again, I
- 1:32:23just, I think it is coming off a big win.
- 1:32:25They don't know if their QB is going to start.
- 1:32:27So give me the Huskies. You know what, I'm going to have
- 1:32:32to go the other direction here. I think, I think Indiana's
- 1:32:35playing really good football right now.
- 1:32:36I think if the quarterback is able to go, I'm going to like
- 1:32:41them to cover that 6 1/2. So let me go with Indiana and
- 1:32:44we'll and we'll see if the if the quarterback goes, but I'll,
- 1:32:46I'll take that that risk right now.
- 1:32:49Yeah, they made me, they made all of us look foolish last
- 1:32:52week. I'm not betting against them
- 1:32:53right now. Give me Indiana, I'll lay 6 1/2
- 1:32:56versus Washington. You know Sheldon's got UW tally.
- 1:33:01I got to go to Indiana, like Curtis said.
- 1:33:02It kind of made me look crazy, you know, thinking just what
- 1:33:06they did last week. So the whole.
- 1:33:08Crew look crazy. Everybody rode with Nebraska and
- 1:33:10we all had egg on our face. Man, yes we did, but.
- 1:33:15Miranda's riding with with the boys here, and so is Jason.
- 1:33:19So, Sheldon, you're out there on the island.
- 1:33:21On the island, it's his game. I'm.
- 1:33:23I'm the Kurt Curb Street right now.
- 1:33:25There you go. All against the green.
- 1:33:27All righty Taliban, what is your game, Sir?
- 1:33:32Man, we're going to go to, you know, Vandy in in Texas here.
- 1:33:36Texas is coming off of a loss. You know, Vandy's kind of riding
- 1:33:39high this this this year in general.
- 1:33:42I don't think Vandy wins this game, but I think Vandy covers
- 1:33:48that spread. I think they're going to make it
- 1:33:50a heart attack game for Texas just because Povy is a gamer.
- 1:33:54So I'm going Vandy this game. You know, what I've learned
- 1:33:59watching some of these Vanderbilt games is that
- 1:34:02Vanderbilt absolutely plays to whatever the competition level
- 1:34:06is of their opponent. They, they, they played down to
- 1:34:11the, to the ball states of the world.
- 1:34:14You know, they, they, they took a loss to AG5 school, but they
- 1:34:17beaten Alabama. They played what, Missouri
- 1:34:20Pretty tough. You know, I think this is a team
- 1:34:24that kind of matches the energy of whoever their opponent is.
- 1:34:27So 18 1/2 is way too much there. So give me Vandy here.
- 1:34:31Yep, I'm with you. Way too much. 18 1/2 is way too
- 1:34:36much. And also watching Texas's
- 1:34:39defense, they had a couple very difficult times defending some
- 1:34:43of those runs against Georgia. And I know it's a little bit of
- 1:34:46different style, but they've shown sort of the flaw and it's
- 1:34:50probably that rush defense. And again, I don't know, Jerry
- 1:34:53Keel and Tim Beck and Clark Lee are going to lean on fall
- 1:34:57control. We're going to run the ball a
- 1:34:59lot. It's in Nashville.
- 1:35:02Josh, just put that up there in the chat.
- 1:35:04Josh Young shout out. I think they beat them by like a
- 1:35:08field goal. Texas is going to hold out, but
- 1:35:12Vanderbilt is going to shock their life.
- 1:35:14Sheldon. Vanderbilt's actually been one
- 1:35:17of the top ten teams in the country in terms of
- 1:35:19outperforming the spread based on point totals.
- 1:35:22For whatever reason, the computers have just had a hard
- 1:35:24time with this scene this year. For that reason, I'm taking
- 1:35:26Vandy. 18.5 just sounds way too big.
- 1:35:29Yep, and we are riding as a family.
- 1:35:35Sandy across the board, baby. Sandy, across the board, you
- 1:35:38ever think you see that a day in your life?
- 1:35:40Everybody picking Vandy with points against a program like
- 1:35:44Texas, Not I, not I. All righty, let's roll next.
- 1:35:48We've got Miranda's pick, which I almost picked this one.
- 1:35:53We got Notre Dame against undefeated Navy, undefeated top
- 1:36:0025 ranked Navy. It's going to be at the gorgeous
- 1:36:03Annapolis Stadium where I love. I got a chance to go and watch
- 1:36:08the Hokies play. Navy getting 12 1/2 points.
- 1:36:12Brian, where are you on this one?
- 1:36:14Yeah, and it's the 12 1/2 for me.
- 1:36:17I think Notre Dame does win this game, but it's a very good year
- 1:36:20for the service academies in general and a very good year for
- 1:36:22Navy so far. And I think their style of play,
- 1:36:26if, if Notre Dame doesn't jump out on them quick offensively,
- 1:36:29they're going to grind that game to a halt.
- 1:36:32I could see Notre Dame pulling, pulling out a 10 point win, but
- 1:36:34that's about it. So I'm going with baby here.
- 1:36:38Yeah, and you, you just summarize exactly why 12 1/2 is
- 1:36:41way too much. And right now they are 7 and O
- 1:36:47excuse me, 6 and O The closest game they have had this year is
- 1:36:53a 12 point win against Memphis. They hung 56 on Memphis.
- 1:37:00No one has slowed them down all year.
- 1:37:03I do think Notre Dame slows them down, but not to the tune of 12
- 1:37:061/2 points. Yeah, historically, historically
- 1:37:12Notre Dame is dominated as rivalry and they've they've had
- 1:37:15a pretty easy time with maybe even in recent years.
- 1:37:17So I think it's a good match up for for Notre Dame and I'll take
- 1:37:20the Irish. Laying 12 1/2 when that first
- 1:37:24drive hold on when that first drive takes 9 minutes, Sheldon
- 1:37:27going to be worried about his 12 1/2 points.
- 1:37:29Like why did that take so long, Tally?
- 1:37:33Yeah, I got to go Navy here just for the fact that if I if I
- 1:37:36didn't think my brother may kill me.
- 1:37:38So I'm going to go Navy. From the fart.
- 1:37:42Miranda's ride with Sheldon and Jason's coming along with the
- 1:37:46rest of us here. By the way, betting on games
- 1:37:49that involve teams that run the triple option, like when you are
- 1:37:52laying points, it's a it's like one of the worst fields ever
- 1:37:56when they when they get going on their first drive and you'd like
- 1:37:59you're laying 13 and it's like that.
- 1:38:01Even if they get a field goal here, like we my team still
- 1:38:05going to win this game, but they win by like 9.
- 1:38:10All right, we got our buddy Jason Long, always playing a
- 1:38:16little music, always picking a game, occasionally going broke
- 1:38:19and asking us for Venmo money. He did not have to do that last
- 1:38:23week. He actually had a pretty good
- 1:38:24week in his NFL bet. So he got, he's not hitting me
- 1:38:27and Brian up for gambling funds this week, but he is going to
- 1:38:31the Nebraska, Ohio State game. I want to stand on you ain't
- 1:38:56gonna start. You better stop.
- 1:39:02Not a thing to do. When I said wipe down, I ain't
- 1:39:08done. This.
- 1:39:47Hey, welcome back to Guitar Licks and Gambling Picks.
- 1:39:49I'm Jason Long and it's close to Halloween, so it's playing
- 1:39:52around with one of my favorite songs.
- 1:39:54I Put a Spell on You. A bunch of people have covered
- 1:39:56that song, say Nuna Simone, CCR, The Sanderson Sisters.
- 1:40:00Hell, I even recorded it last year, put it on a little album
- 1:40:03called Other People's Children and you can find that anywhere
- 1:40:06you buy or stream music. Now, the original artist and
- 1:40:10songwriter of that song is actually a guy named Screaming
- 1:40:13Jay Hawkins, who was born and raised in Ohio.
- 1:40:16That just so happens to be where I'm looking at for this week's
- 1:40:19pick. Now, Nebraska travels to Ohio
- 1:40:23State Saturday, and they're looking like they're big, big,
- 1:40:28big underdogs. Ohio State is currently giving
- 1:40:30up 23 1/2 points. That's a scary amount of points
- 1:40:35to give up, but in honor of spooky season and screaming
- 1:40:39jiffy, I figured might as well go ahead and lay down 23 1/2
- 1:40:43points. Ohio State at home against
- 1:40:46Nebraska Saturday night. That's the way I'm rolling Go
- 1:40:48bugging us. I want to stay on you.
- 1:40:54Me going to fire you better start out of things doing and I
- 1:41:12said why down I ain't lying. I ain't gonna take that as you
- 1:41:22will. I ain't gonna take.
- 1:41:23That on your. Own I'll burn you and I will
- 1:41:28stay on you. We ain't gonna die.
- 1:41:52See you next week, right? So there we are, Nebraska, Ohio
- 1:41:58State in the horseshoe, Ohio State laying 23 1/2.
- 1:42:03We see Jason throwing some big gambling, laying a lot of
- 1:42:07points. Brian, what about you?
- 1:42:11You know what, as our buddy in the in the chat here, Josh Young
- 1:42:16says, I think great value by homes, you know, kind of brings
- 1:42:20it back a little bit after that absolutely disgusting output
- 1:42:24last week. So I'm going to Nebraska here.
- 1:42:27Just this 23 1/2 is just a little too much for a team that
- 1:42:31in Nebraska. I think it's still solid, if
- 1:42:34not, you know, upper echelon big 10 team here.
- 1:42:37So I think if you if you'd have said that was like 2020 1/2, I
- 1:42:41might want to pull the trigger, but that that extra hook is
- 1:42:44going to be a little too much for me.
- 1:42:46The field goal and the hook and I just don't think they can lose
- 1:42:51by that big again. They lost by 49 last week, so I
- 1:42:57think they lose somewhere between 17 and 20 and I'll lay
- 1:43:0023 1/2. I think it is going to be a
- 1:43:02roller coaster though. I think it's going to be the
- 1:43:04Curtis wave of emotions in that game because it's going to
- 1:43:07probably Ohio State, jump out early, Nebraska, fight back, but
- 1:43:11I'll take Nebraska. I think, I think Nebraska's have
- 1:43:15a really hard time scoring. Their offense is pretty bad.
- 1:43:17And oh, I would say this is #1 defense in the country.
- 1:43:20I'm I'm just going to go with the the the bounce back theory
- 1:43:23here and take Ohio State. All right.
- 1:43:26Yeah, I got to go to Nebraska and it's just because I, I don't
- 1:43:30want them to get beat that bad because I don't want Ohio State,
- 1:43:34a couple of my Ohio State buddies to to be able to, to
- 1:43:39brag about this season. So I don't think Nebraska's
- 1:43:42going to win the game, but I don't think they're going to be
- 1:43:45get beat by 23 and a half, 24 points.
- 1:43:49All right, there we go. Miranda says Nebraska.
- 1:43:53So Jason and Shelton. So there are the big screens
- 1:43:56this weekend and it is a lot more fun games to be watching
- 1:44:00this weekend. Hokey game is a noon kick
- 1:44:04everybody. So I'm going to be watching it
- 1:44:06on replay. I will not be blowing up the
- 1:44:08chat because we got baseball. I'll be watching like the 1st 10
- 1:44:11minutes and then we go into baseball game until like 3.
- 1:44:14So y'all don't get the way out to the regular coaster of
- 1:44:16emotions of Curtis. So, yeah, all right, anything
- 1:44:21you're. Just going to be cursing like
- 1:44:22periodic, you like what the fuck are we doing?
- 1:44:24And then you go back to it and then you like pull it up again.
- 1:44:27Like what the fuck are we doing? Yeah, that's what's going to
- 1:44:29happen or I won't say anything. If it's going well, you're going
- 1:44:33to be like hey this is fun and then like ignore your phone for
- 1:44:37another 2. Hours, my phone exactly.
- 1:44:39Well, like 5 minutes. I'll be pulling it up here and
- 1:44:41there and everywhere. Line just went back down to 10
- 1:44:441/2, not 11 1/2. That line's crazy right now for
- 1:44:48the tech game. So we're we're moving up and
- 1:44:49down. I think they're I think they the
- 1:44:52initial reaction was national media saying, you know, we
- 1:44:56weren't getting Ames King and then Brinky saying day-to-day,
- 1:45:00week to week, you know, we don't know yet.
- 1:45:02So it probably moved jumped up two points and they, you know,
- 1:45:06correcting it back with that that one point there.
- 1:45:08So. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:45:11All righty. Anything else to add fellas
- 1:45:13tonight? Great time.
- 1:45:16Great time here. I mean, you got all kind of
- 1:45:19sports on right now. NBA season started again this
- 1:45:22today. You got basketball, you got
- 1:45:25baseball, you got football. Great time of year for a sport.
- 1:45:30Say what now? Hockey's back too, don't forget.
- 1:45:33Hockey's back, too. I mean it starts.
- 1:45:36Friday night. Dude, you got it.
- 1:45:38It's a great time to be a sports fan, man.
- 1:45:40I mean, if you like to bet and lose money, you can lose a lot
- 1:45:43of money right now. So go ahead and just dump all
- 1:45:46your money on whatever you feel like dumping it on.
- 1:45:49So this is I'm excited. I think this is what we we've
- 1:45:52talked about this in the past, like this is the sports week,
- 1:45:56like it is the sports week because World Series hockey,
- 1:45:59basketball, like get you get your fixes in this week.
- 1:46:03So it's like really from this Friday until like next Friday or
- 1:46:07whenever the World Series in it's like every single major
- 1:46:10sport in the US is going football in full season mode.
- 1:46:15It's a it's a beautiful time of the year, probably the best
- 1:46:18sports week. Oh yeah, definitely the best
- 1:46:21sports week. You get a little bit of
- 1:46:22everything. There's nothing that you know,
- 1:46:25most sports fans don't have some interest in and and can get
- 1:46:28excited about. You know, you're kind of getting
- 1:46:31to the meat of the schedule from a football standpoint, whether
- 1:46:34it's NFL or college. You got the World Series out
- 1:46:36there, start of the season. Everybody's got the hopium.
- 1:46:40When you when you look at, you know, the hockey in the in the
- 1:46:42NBA, you know, you're starting to get some early contest in,
- 1:46:47you know, college basketball, men's and women.
- 1:46:49So you're starting to see a little bit of that start to come
- 1:46:51into play, you know, that'll start, you know, tipping off
- 1:46:55about the time that the World Series is wrapping up.
- 1:46:57So it's a really good time of year for a sports fan.
- 1:47:01And I think you just kind of got to soak it up a little bit and
- 1:47:03enjoy it because. You know, that's it it.
- 1:47:06It goes away pretty quick. Sit down, grab your favorite
- 1:47:09food, grab your favorite beverage, kick your feet up and
- 1:47:12enjoy the weekend. And with that, let's wrap up
