- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It's so good to have your
- 0:16company. I hope you're going well on this
- 0:18Monday morning. Here we are at the start of a
- 0:21whole new week, and this is a week that we are going to cover
- 0:25a fair bit of territory. You and I are going to finish
- 0:28reading through the last three chapters of the book of Acts and
- 0:31then and then we are going to go back and finish off the book of
- 0:37Isaiah. We have gotten halfway, well
- 0:39more than halfway through. And we are going to duck right
- 0:42back into that narrative on Thursday.
- 0:44But I'll tell you more about what's happening when we get
- 0:47back there today. We are going back to Poro.
- 0:51Paul stuck in his incarceration game playing, going on at a
- 0:57political level, and him stuck trying to do what he does, that
- 1:01is, be faithful and continue his mission, preaching the good news
- 1:07about Jesus to the world of Gentiles.
- 1:10What a guy. Just an incredible witness, and
- 1:13an incredible example of someone just so dedicated to that vision
- 1:18that God gave them. So whatever it is that you have
- 1:22going on, let us put that down. Let us pick up this narrative.
- 1:27Let God's word speak to us, nurture us, and shape us to be
- 1:31more like the disciples that He wants us to be.
- 1:35Let us read together, Friends, Acts Chapter 26
- 1:51then, Agrippa said to Paul. You may speak in your defence.
- 1:56So Paul, gesturing with his hand, started his defence.
- 2:00I am fortunate, King Agrippa, that you are the one hearing my
- 2:04defence today against all these accusations made by the Jewish
- 2:08leaders, for I know you are an expert on all Jewish customs and
- 2:13controversies. Now please listen to me
- 2:15patiently. As the Jewish leaders are well
- 2:19aware, I was given a thorough Jewish training for my earliest
- 2:23childhood among my own people and in Jerusalem, if they would
- 2:28admit it, they know that I have been a member of the Pharisees,
- 2:32the strictest sect of our religion.
- 2:35Now I am on trial because of my hope in the fulfilment of God's
- 2:39promise made to our ancestors. In fact, that is why the 12
- 2:44tribes of Israel zealously worship God night and day, and
- 2:49they share the same hope I have. Yet, Your Majesty, they accuse
- 2:54me for having this hope. Why does it seem incredible to
- 2:58any of you that God can raise the dead?
- 3:01I used to believe that I ought to do everything I could to
- 3:04oppose the very name of Jesus, the Nazarene.
- 3:08Indeed, I did just that in Jerusalem, authorized by the
- 3:12leading priests. I caused many believers there to
- 3:16be sent to prison, and I cast my vote against them when they were
- 3:20condemned to death. Many times I had them punished
- 3:24in the synagogue to get them to curse Jesus.
- 3:27I was so violently opposed to them that I even chased them
- 3:31down in foreign cities. One day I was on such a mission
- 3:36to Damascus, armed with the authority and Commission of the
- 3:39leading priests. About noon, Your Majesty, as I
- 3:43was on the road, a light from heaven, brighter than the sun,
- 3:48shone down on me and my companions.
- 3:50We all fell down and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic.
- 3:55Soul, soul, why are you persecuting me?
- 4:00It is useless for you to fight against my will.
- 4:04Who are you, Lord? I asked, and the Lord replied, I
- 4:09am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.
- 4:12Now get to your feet, for I have appeared to you to appoint you
- 4:17as my servant and witness. Tell people that you have seen
- 4:22me, and tell them what I will show you in the future, and I
- 4:26will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles.
- 4:31Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles to open their eyes so
- 4:36that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of
- 4:40Satan to God. Then they will receive
- 4:44forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God's
- 4:47people who were set apart by faith in me.
- 4:51And so, King Agrippa, I obeyed that vision.
- 4:54From heaven I preached first to those in Damascus, then in
- 4:59Jerusalem, and throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles,
- 5:04that all must repent of their sins and turn to God and prove
- 5:08that they have changed by the good things they do.
- 5:11Some Jews arrested me in the temple for preaching this, and
- 5:15they tried to kill me, but God has protected me right up to
- 5:19this present time so I can testify to everyone from the
- 5:24least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the
- 5:28prophets and Moses said would happen, that the Messiah would
- 5:32suffer and be the first to rise from the dead and in this way
- 5:37pronounce God's light to Jews and Gentiles alike.
- 5:41Suddenly Festus shouted. Paul, are you insane?
- 5:46Too much study has made you crazy.
- 5:49But Paul replied, I'm not insane.
- 5:52Most excellent Festus. What I'm saying is the sober
- 5:56truth. And King Agrippa knows about
- 5:59these things. I speak boldly, for I am sure
- 6:03these events are all familiar to him, for they were not done in a
- 6:07corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the
- 6:10prophets? I know you do, Agrippa
- 6:13interrupted him. Do you think you can persuade me
- 6:17to become a Christian so quickly?
- 6:21Paul replied. Whether quickly or not, I pray
- 6:25to God that both you and everyone here in this audience
- 6:29might become the same as I am, except for these chains.
- 6:35Then the king, the governor, Bernice, and all the others
- 6:39stood and left. As they went out, they talked it
- 6:42over and agreed. This man hasn't done anything to
- 6:46deserve death or imprisonment. And Agrippa said to Festus, he
- 6:51could have been set free if he hadn't appealed to Caesar.
- 7:06Lord, the story of your engagement with the world does
- 7:11sound like craziness. Your truth is foolishness in the
- 7:15ears of the world, so we will need extra boldness as you
- 7:21empower us and send us with this message.
- 7:27But this message, deep in itself, has hope and love and
- 7:32forgiveness that no matter how foreign the story may sound,
- 7:38that is what all human hearts crave.
- 7:44So empower us by your spirit that your message would be ever
- 7:48on our lips, and that your message would be what inspires
- 7:53us in the way that we live, the way that we respond to
- 7:57challenges in our lives, and the way that we treat people, so
- 8:01that people have no option but to ask what is up with you?
- 8:06Why do you act this way, Jesus? Give us opportunities to speak
- 8:13of your love and Your grace and Holy Spirit.
- 8:16Give us your words, because ours always fall short in comparison.
- 8:22We are Your servants. Just as we read Paul speaking so
- 8:27boldly, we too are your servants.
- 8:30Send us, use us, equip us, and thank you for the love that you
- 8:36shower us even before we get out of bed in the morning to do
- 8:41anything for you. We love you, and we're so
- 8:44grateful for all of this. It's in Jesus name that we pray.
- 8:48Amen.
