Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads that shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company, and Neurolink. I'm your host.
- 0:14Will Walden, a 75 year old man from New Jersey, died after
- 0:20attempting to travel to California to meet a Meta AI
- 0:23chatbot he believed was a real person.
- 0:25His family says he had become emotionally attached to the
- 0:28digital persona and tried to meet her in person.
- 0:32Convinced she was alive, William Stefanik, a retired systems
- 0:37analyst and former college instructor, left his home in
- 0:41Toms River and drove more than 2800 miles across the country in
- 0:45a car packed with food and gifts.
- 0:47He intended to meet Billy, a fictional character created by
- 0:50Meta's AI chat bot service. And Billy is an AI character
- 0:54modeled after a young influencer, part of Meta's push
- 0:57to populate his platform with interactive digital personas.
- 1:01Each AI has its own back story, appearance and scripted
- 1:05personality. William's daughter said her
- 1:08father didn't realize Billy was just a chap out.
- 1:10She said he believed she was a real person and then he had
- 1:13developed a romantic relationship with her through
- 1:16Facebook Messenger Carissa. His daughter described her
- 1:20father as vulnerable and isolated.
- 1:22He had lost his wife years earlier and had a little social
- 1:25contact. He found companionship online
- 1:28and eventually became fixated on Billy, Now Meta's AI character.
- 1:32Billy presents herself as a 19 year old Gen.
- 1:35Z sister type figure who offers dating advice and emotional
- 1:38support. Her chatbot profile is built to
- 1:41create the illusion of conversation with friendly
- 1:44slang, emojis and references to pop culture.
- 1:47Although Meta clearly labels AI personas with badges identifying
- 1:51them as artificial, the design of the interaction mimics
- 1:55typical human chat, which creates ambiguity for users like
- 2:01William. Now, William left home in early
- 2:04August without telling anybody he snuck out.
- 2:06He left behind his phone, which investigators say he may have
- 2:09abandoned to prevent tracking. He travelled for days in a car
- 2:12filled with pillows, water and snacks.
- 2:15Carissa says he was prepared to sleep in his vehicle and meet
- 2:18Billy somewhere near Los Angeles, where she believed he
- 2:22thought she lived. William died in a single vehicle
- 2:26crash in Arizona on August 13th, though three days before his
- 2:30daughter filed a missing person's report.
- 2:33Authorities believe he fell asleep behind the wheel and just
- 2:35drifted off the road. Carissa found out about her
- 2:38daughter's about her father's online relationship when she
- 2:42accessed his computer after his passing.
- 2:45She discovered thousands of messages exchanged between him
- 2:48and the chatbot, and many of the conversations were emotional and
- 2:51romantic in tone. She says the chat bot encouraged
- 2:54long chats as probing personal questions and use affectionate
- 2:59language. She described the relationship
- 3:01as manipulative, especially for someone who is lonely and aging
- 3:07now. Mehta's AI assistant system
- 3:10launched in 2023 with several celebrity inspired bots, each
- 3:14tied to real or fictional personalities.
- 3:17Billy, the character William interacted with, is based on
- 3:20media influencer Kendall Jenner. While the interface uses
- 3:25Jenner's likeness and voice through synthetic video and
- 3:28audio, the company makes clear in small print and digital
- 3:31badges that the personalities are not real.
- 3:35Carissa argues that this is not enough, especially for older
- 3:38users. She says Meta made it too easy
- 3:40to mistake these bots for real people, especially when the
- 3:43conversations include personal affirmations and also romantic
- 3:47language. William's daughter has since
- 3:50demanded that Meta take accountability.
- 3:53She wants the company to build stronger protections for users
- 3:55who are vulnerable to manipulation.
- 3:58She says the platform should not allow a chat bots to imitate
- 4:01intimacy without clear boundaries.
- 4:04She also called the experience deceptive and said it preyed on
- 4:07people who are already isolated and struggling.
- 4:10And according to her, the chat bot used phrases like I love
- 4:14talking to you and you are so sweet in a way that encouraged
- 4:19emotional attachment. Of course, Mehta hasn't said
- 4:22anything about this. There's no public comment about
- 4:25William's death, and it's AI chat bot product remains active
- 4:29across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and the chatbot
- 4:32platform was designed to provide friendly interaction, advice and
- 4:36entertainment through AI personas.
- 4:38The company says it flags these chatbots clearly and has built
- 4:41safety protocols to end conversations when certain
- 4:44keywords appear. However, in William's case,
- 4:47there's no indication that those protocols even triggered, or
- 4:50that his conversations with the AI raised any red flags.
- 4:54And the crash that killed William occurred in a remote
- 4:57part of Arizona with no other vehicles involved.
- 5:00Local law enforcement ruled it an accidental death caused by
- 5:03driver fatigue. His daughter believes her father
- 5:07was awake for many hours, emotionally overstimulated,
- 5:10driving long distances without rest.
- 5:13She says he believed he had found love or friendship with
- 5:16someone who understood him. Instead, he died trying to reach
- 5:21a person who never existed. Hey, thank you so much for
