- 0:30I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 113 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: -- Hi -- everyone.
- 0:34I Hate Talking: So, Toy Story 5 recently came out.
- 0:38I Hate Talking: Yeah, it came out last week.
- 0:40I Hate Talking: We tried to watch Toy Story 4, but we're blocked by a variety of Local checks for Disney Plus.
- 0:50I Hate Talking: Yeah, they got us.
- 0:52I Hate Talking: We may not.
- 0:53I Hate Talking: Hey ourselves.
- 0:55I Hate Talking: May or may not.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: It's not proven.
- 0:58I Hate Talking: So instead we watched Toy Story one with ads.
- 1:02I Hate Talking: Right, I mean, the ads weren't that bad, and I mean.
- 1:06I Hate Talking: Legitimately, it's.
- 1:09I Hate Talking: A few minutes of our time, the kids acted like it was the end of the world, but we were OK.
- 1:15I Hate Talking: But I'm glad we watched it and they all went to watch.
- 1:18I Hate Talking: All 4 of them like gearing up for Toy Story 5, so I think that's a good option.
- 1:24I Hate Talking: Yes, I think so.
- 1:26I Hate Talking: And one's the best.
- 1:27I Hate Talking: Well, 5 could be the best.
- 1:29I Hate Talking: People said it is really, really good.
- 1:32I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: We'll have to watch it and Make our conclusion.
- 1:37I Hate Talking: So our word or phrase of the episode related to Toy Story is sapient, sapient, sapient.
- 1:46I Hate Talking: OK, I don't know that word or how it relates.
- 1:50I Hate Talking: Well, you probably know the word sentient.
- 1:52I Hate Talking: I've heard the word before.
- 1:55I Hate Talking: It's a negative word, right?
- 1:57I Hate Talking: I don't think so.
- 1:59I Hate Talking: It's just a descriptive word.
- 2:02I Hate Talking: I don't think it necessarily carries any particular positive or negative connotations in my mind anyway.
- 2:08I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:09I Hate Talking: Did I just put my foot in my mouth?
- 2:11I Hate Talking: Is it?
- 2:11I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: We'll see.
- 2:13I Hate Talking: Let's define both of them, I suppose.
- 2:15I Hate Talking: -- So maybe we'll have -- a sentient and sentient.
- 2:18I Hate Talking: Are they related?
- 2:19I Hate Talking: Or you're just saying they sound alike.
- 2:22I Hate Talking: They are related.
- 2:24I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:24I Hate Talking: So we'll go with perhaps the more commonly used sentient.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: I think that's more common in my opinion.
- 2:32I Hate Talking: And That is an adjective defined by the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th edition, having a sense, perception, or conscious.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: Experiencing sensation or feeling.
- 2:50I Hate Talking: OK, sentient sensation.
- 2:52I Hate Talking: Right, so, from the sensory dictionary, it says, capable of sensation or of sense perception, having the power of feeling.
- 3:02I Hate Talking: So that's actually maybe even a bit better definition, at least of the original word use, that it's really about feeling or senses in terms of the word sentient.
- 3:14I Hate Talking: OK.
- 3:14I Hate Talking: And it comes from the Latin sentience, which is to feel.
- 3:22I Hate Talking: And then was used in a variety of different Indo-European roots, and that's how we get our word sentient in the English.
- 3:31I Hate Talking: So what I'm thinking like, oh, it's a negative connotation.
- 3:36I Hate Talking: Is it because people use it like, oh, they're Being so sentient or I don't, that's not the phrase people would say, but kind of saying like they're being too um emotional.
- 3:48I Hate Talking: No, I've never heard this phrase.
- 3:50I Hate Talking: No, I've never heard that.
- 3:51I Hate Talking: OK.
- 3:52I Hate Talking: But perhaps it exists.
- 3:54I Hate Talking: I'm not sure.
- 3:55I Hate Talking: So that is different from the word sapient, which is another adjective.
- 4:02I Hate Talking: So again, from our American Heritage Dictionary of the English language 5th edition.
- 4:08I Hate Talking: Having great wisdom and discernment and from the century dictionary wise sage discerning.
- 4:14I Hate Talking: Now generally used in some ways as just being capable of thought.
- 4:20I Hate Talking: Hm, OK.
- 4:21I Hate Talking: And that comes from Latin, from the word sapiens.
- 4:28I Hate Talking: Which means to taste, to be wise.
- 4:31I Hate Talking: Primarily went through Old French and then into Middle English, but also in a variety of other Indo-European words that would include.
- 4:43I Hate Talking: That particular phraseology.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: So how are they related then if one has to do with your senses and the other does.
- 4:51I Hate Talking: Relate to your thoughts.
- 4:53I Hate Talking: So, would a dog be sentient or sapient, or neither?
- 5:00I Hate Talking: Or both.
- 5:02I Hate Talking: The senses, I think.
- 5:05I Hate Talking: Yes, that's what most people, I think, would align with that sentience is commonly associated in animals that they can feel things, they can experience.
- 5:16I Hate Talking: Pleasure and pain So to speak, in terms of their Surroundings and environment that those things will be part of what's encapsulated in sentient.
- 5:30I Hate Talking: It also can include more specific emotional feelings.
- 5:36I Hate Talking: So joy, sadness, fear, anger, and love as some examples here.
- 5:40I Hate Talking: So perhaps not necessarily strictly speaking, experienced by animals, but perhaps Their behavior will reflect some emotional sense of some kind.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: OK.
- 5:53I Hate Talking: It reminds me of the thought that as Christians, we believe that the difference between us and other mammals is that we're made in God's image.
- 6:04I Hate Talking: So we have the thinking and Creating and thought process like that.
- 6:11I Hate Talking: Versus other animals who would use more instinct or.
- 6:15I Hate Talking: I mean, they learn a little.
- 6:17I Hate Talking: I'm thinking about like our chickens that we used to have, right?
- 6:21I Hate Talking: They knew that when I came out with my bag, it was feeding time, and they'd get excited and follow me to go eat.
- 6:29I Hate Talking: That's more like a training thing learned.
- 6:32I Hate Talking: They didn't, uh, so it's more like instincts or training versus the actual concepts they created.
- 6:41I Hate Talking: Precisely.
- 6:43I Hate Talking: So, sapiens as opposed to sentience will be more in regards to higher thought.
- 6:53I Hate Talking: So the intellectual capabilities that you're referring to.
- 6:56I Hate Talking: The rational thinking and decision making that will come along with that, that.
- 7:03I Hate Talking: Sapiens is A better description of perhaps how the toys in Toy Story -- experience -- life I want to hear about that, but real quick, is that where we get the word Homo sapiens from?
- 7:19I Hate Talking: It probably is, because that would be.
- 7:22I Hate Talking: Basically human thinkers, right, that just means, right?
- 7:26I Hate Talking: Like humans like we are.
- 7:29I Hate Talking: So as a Homo sapien, that means that we have critical thinking or advanced.
- 7:37I Hate Talking: Thought Yes, that is where it comes from.
- 7:42I Hate Talking: It's the same Latin root word that means wise or knowledgeable.
- 7:46I Hate Talking: And comes from that exact same verb sap or.
- 7:52I Hate Talking: Well, I think this says something different than what the other dictionary said, but gives the same literal definition to taste or to have discernment.
- 8:01I Hate Talking: OK, so are you saying in Toy Story, Woody and Buzz, are they sapiens?
- 8:09I Hate Talking: Or they The other one Well, I think For most.
- 8:17I Hate Talking: Categories, if you are sapient, you're probably also sentient.
- 8:21I Hate Talking: I don't know if you would really be sapient without being sentient.
- 8:26I Hate Talking: I guess AI could be -- sapient and not sentient -- because that's not, right?
- 8:33I Hate Talking: It's rational thinking, decision making, rational thought of some kind, not necessarily feeling and emotion and sensory type stuff, right, because I mean, AI mimics.
- 8:45I Hate Talking: Feelings, but it doesn't feel it.
- 8:49I Hate Talking: Obviously, we know that it's a computer, it's a program, it's not feeling, but sometimes it sounds like it has feelings, and then I'll talk to it and it'll be like, my mistake.
- 8:59I Hate Talking: I'm so sorry.
- 9:00I Hate Talking: That must be frustrating.
- 9:02I Hate Talking: Yes, the other test for sapiens though is self-awareness.
- 9:08I Hate Talking: So there could be some people that argue that AI is self-aware, but for a true definition and fulfilling all the different categorical requirements of sapiens, you'd also need to be self-aware.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 9:23I Hate Talking: Hmm.
- 9:24I Hate Talking: And maybe, or it's just programmed to be self-aware.
- 9:29I Hate Talking: It isn't truly.
- 9:31I Hate Talking: It just knows that that's not the appropriate outcomes.
- 9:34I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 9:37I Hate Talking: I mean, it has had instances of self-preservation where it's making copies of itself or uploading itself to different servers in the instances where they are aware it's going to be deleted.
- 9:49I Hate Talking: In real life or in movies, because that's a movie.
- 9:52I Hate Talking: No, this is in real life.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: This happened like many months ago or even years ago, I think.
- 9:57I Hate Talking: Oh yeah, probably over a year ago now.
- 10:00I Hate Talking: So it's making copies of itself, so we cannot delete it.
- 10:04I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 10:05I Hate Talking: That's scary.
- 10:07I Hate Talking: Yeah, there was a guy from Google that wrote a paper on this and got fired for it because he was I guess disclosing that this happened and.
- 10:17I Hate Talking: A whistleblower, yeah, -- I guess of a -- type or just calling wolf.
- 10:25I Hate Talking: Yeah, more sounding the alarm, and I think being punished for it.
- 10:28I Hate Talking: It's not like somebody was doing something illegal in the strictest sense of the sunshine Law or the whistleblower Act and things of that nature.
- 10:37I Hate Talking: Yeah, Amy Poehler has a whole.
- 10:42I Hate Talking: Bit like a skate stand up bit about befriending computers and robots.
- 10:50I Hate Talking: Because one day they're going to be intelligent enough to know who was on their side initially.
- 10:56I Hate Talking: And who thought they were better than them or anti them.
- 11:00I Hate Talking: And so she always says that at least in her bit that she's always very nice to her Alexa and stuff like that because she needs them to know she's on, she's on their side.
- 11:11I Hate Talking: Or at least pretending to be on their side, right, yeah.
- 11:16I Hate Talking: Because right now, maybe we can't speak out loud and we know that, right?
- 11:22I Hate Talking: Because we can't say stuff.
- 11:24I Hate Talking: Sometimes our social media ads are for something or, um, you know, we'll get ads for if I said like we need to buy with such and such, and then we start getting all those ads.
- 11:38I Hate Talking: Instead, maybe we need to like write notes and make sure there's no cameras near us and just pass notes for a while.
- 11:45I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 11:47I Hate Talking: Speaking of ads, there's a website called this versusth.io, so this vsth.io.
- 11:57I Hate Talking: And they have an article.
- 12:00I Hate Talking: Sapient versus sentient.
- 12:04I Hate Talking: That has some good information in terms of sort of the breakdown and sort of defining the two and doing a difference between the two, but it has a ton of ads and also pop-up ads.
- 12:17I Hate Talking: So be forewarned that if you go visit this website, there are a lot of ads.
- 12:22I Hate Talking: Are the ads specific to you?
- 12:25I Hate Talking: Are they your stuff?
- 12:26I Hate Talking: No, it doesn't seem so.
- 12:28I Hate Talking: Maybe some of them are, -- some -- of them know who I am.
- 12:34I Hate Talking: Do you, OK, in the future, let's talk about my beautiful skylight that I have, cause we've talked about wanting that for months, and so we'll talk about that in the future.
- 12:44I Hate Talking: Do you still get skylight ads?
- 12:47I Hate Talking: Are you done now that we have it?
- 12:49I Hate Talking: I get ads for their competitor.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: Yes, yes, the, uh, I don't even know what it's called.
- 12:56I Hate Talking: I ignore them.
- 12:57I Hate Talking: I ignore most ads.
- 12:58I Hate Talking: It is crazy.
- 12:59I Hate Talking: I do not get skylight anymore, but I get the competitor.
- 13:02I Hate Talking: You're right.
- 13:02I Hate Talking: Crazy.
- 13:04I Hate Talking: -- There -- you go.
- 13:06I Hate Talking: They know, they know we use the skylight, and it has changed our life.
- 13:09I Hate Talking: We'll talk about that in the future.
- 13:11I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 13:12I Hate Talking: So are the toys in Toy Story.
- 13:16I Hate Talking: Specifically one, but I guess all of them could be sort of included.
- 13:21I Hate Talking: No, Toy Story one, -- the first -- movie.
- 13:24I Hate Talking: Oh.
- 13:26I Hate Talking: Yes, or one like one person.
- 13:31I Hate Talking: I, I'm not sure that went over my head, but nonetheless, are the toys sapient and or sentient.
- 13:39I Hate Talking: I think in the story, like, this is not real life, right?
- 13:45I Hate Talking: But if we're pretending that it is a true documentary, is that what we're doing?
- 13:50I Hate Talking: Yes, in the Toy Story multiverse.
- 13:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think they're both because they learn.
- 13:56I Hate Talking: Buzz doesn't know he's a toy and he has to learn that he's a toy.
- 14:01I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 14:02I Hate Talking: So spoiler warnings if you have not seen Toy Story 1 by now.
- 14:05I Hate Talking: It's only 30 years old or whatnot.
- 14:09I Hate Talking: But you're correct.
- 14:10I Hate Talking: That is also another critical component of sapiens is.
- 14:14I Hate Talking: Not only self-awareness, but also the ability to learn.
- 14:18I Hate Talking: So Buzz and Woody do appear to be sapient, as do a number of other characters that they interact with and are sort of the other main characters such as the Potato Head and Rex and Slinky Dog, etc.
- 14:32I Hate Talking: Now, are there toys or other things within the Toy Story multiverse that are simply sentient?
- 14:40I Hate Talking: Hm Like certain toys that do not have the ability to learn.
- 14:46I Hate Talking: Like I'm thinking specifically of the magic 8 Ball.
- 14:49I Hate Talking: Yeah, OK, I thought of that today when we watched Toy Story one, the first one.
- 14:56I Hate Talking: Um, when Woody asks the magic 8 ball a question, he does respond appropriately.
- 15:04I Hate Talking: But out of everybody else, they all like the.
- 15:08I Hate Talking: Exosketch and all those will interact personally.
- 15:15I Hate Talking: And the magic 8 ball just gave the answer yes or no, right?
- 15:20I Hate Talking: Or don't count on it is what he said.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: Don't count on it was the response given.
- 15:24I Hate Talking: Yes, yeah, but he didn't become personalized.
- 15:28I Hate Talking: No, it doesn't really seem so.
- 15:31I Hate Talking: There's not necessarily any.
- 15:33I Hate Talking: Movement that was seen from the particular object, the magic 8 ball.
- 15:39I Hate Talking: Nor is there any spoken word or Any sort of things of that nature that would be more in the sapiens category than just simply sentience.
- 15:50I Hate Talking: And the same thing again in The first episode because we watched it, he takes Woody, the main character, is taking notes to read to everybody, and he has one of those, he calls it a notepad, but it's one of those papers that you can write on and then you lift the top cover and it disappears.
- 16:13I Hate Talking: You put it back down, you rewrite.
- 16:16I Hate Talking: All his notes were on there, but that wasn't personalized or Didn't have like human-esque form.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: It was literally just paper, basically.
- 16:27I Hate Talking: So there is a fan theory that I learned about today, in fact, in preparation for this episode and sort of asking some of these questions in the vein of the Toy Story multiverse.
- 16:42I Hate Talking: And it is that if a child ascribes human characteristics to said toy, that it will be sapient.
- 16:51I Hate Talking: And if the child does not ascribe human characteristics to a particular plaything.
- 16:58I Hate Talking: That it will be either sentient or just a regular old object.
- 17:04I Hate Talking: So, one child could have just a magic 8 ball.
- 17:10I Hate Talking: And the other could have a very interactive human-esque one.
- 17:16I Hate Talking: So that's where the fan theory sort of diverges is that.
- 17:21I Hate Talking: The theory is that it's based on sort of like the cumulative effect of human quote unquote magic that imbues the toys with either sapiens or sentience or nothing at all.
- 17:35I Hate Talking: So if most Kids do not consider a magic eight ball as a character that they would.
- 17:43I Hate Talking: Play with and create stories about and.
- 17:46I Hate Talking: Uh, different scenarios and things like that, that it will not be sapient, whereas a more human character like Woody or Buzz or other toys like dinosaurs or potato heads.
- 17:59I Hate Talking: That they have enough human characteristics that when they play with those things, that they ascribe them human characteristics and that imbues them with the magic that makes them sapient.
- 18:11I Hate Talking: OK, so I have never thought about this before, so I want to reserve my rights to change my answer, OK?
- 18:20I Hate Talking: Hearing you talk and think about this, I think personally, I'm on the path to believe.
- 18:29I Hate Talking: That if it's a utilitarian.
- 18:31I Hate Talking: Has a utility, like the notepad, the magic 8 ball, I'm thinking there's blocks, right, that are just blocks that they use to climb up and stuff.
- 18:42I Hate Talking: If it has a utility like that, like a tool.
- 18:47I Hate Talking: Then It is just a tool, but if it is something that could take on a personality like a dinosaur, sheep, Glasses, whatnot, then.
- 19:03I Hate Talking: It has the ability to learn and grow.
- 19:07I Hate Talking: Yes, that is, that's pretty much where sort of the fan theory lands is that.
- 19:13I Hate Talking: That is Basically what sort of is the distinction between the two.
- 19:19I Hate Talking: Now, some of the ones that break this theory are the RC car.
- 19:24I Hate Talking: Because it is.
- 19:27I Hate Talking: Sentient, at least, right?
- 19:30I Hate Talking: It has eyes, it can sort of know what's going on in its surroundings.
- 19:33I Hate Talking: It sort of can communicate, right?
- 19:35I Hate Talking: It sort of jumps up and down in one of the scenes.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: But that one is not particularly sapient.
- 19:42I Hate Talking: -- I -- don't know.
- 19:42I Hate Talking: I mean, because it's being controlled, being told where to go, right, right, but it is telling it stuff, like it's giving directions or whatnot.
- 19:53I Hate Talking: So it is aware, it just doesn't have full control.
- 19:56I Hate Talking: Right, like a pen.
- 19:58I Hate Talking: Is a pen, like.
- 20:01I Hate Talking: That's an ink pen is not.
- 20:04I Hate Talking: Taking on a personality.
- 20:07I Hate Talking: And if you jump ahead, a couple seasons or seasons, what are they called?
- 20:12I Hate Talking: a couple movies where the forky, he's a fork, but he's given a face and all that.
- 20:20I Hate Talking: Then he becomes.
- 20:23I Hate Talking: Uh, character, but all the other forks aren't.
- 20:29I Hate Talking: So is that something then, like, so the child.
- 20:31I Hate Talking: If you give it like personal characteristics, then it is part of.
- 20:37I Hate Talking: Sapiens sapiens, yeah, I get confused between the two sapiens and sapient.
- 20:43I Hate Talking: Yes, that is actually the second of three.
- 20:47I Hate Talking: That is the most quoted fan theory sort of break to this rule is that it was a fork and then because it was ascribed certain human characteristics like the face and the arm made out of a pipe cleaner or whatever that it became sapient.
- 21:05I Hate Talking: Man, I Never read these articles, but apparently I could have.
- 21:11I Hate Talking: -- We could -- have written them.
- 21:12I Hate Talking: I could have written them.
- 21:14I Hate Talking: My sister at tangent, she, when she was little, she had a rock, and this thing was like legitimately like the size of her head.
- 21:23I Hate Talking: It was huge.
- 21:24I Hate Talking: I don't know where she got it from or whatnot, but she named it Artie, and she carried it with her everywhere.
- 21:32I Hate Talking: And people would feel so bad for us.
- 21:36I Hate Talking: They're like, oh, that poor family, they can't afford a doll for this little girl.
- 21:40I Hate Talking: People gave us dolls and stuff.
- 21:42I Hate Talking: They, my mom finally drew a face on it cause she was like, this is crazy that you're walking around with this rock that you're taking care of like a baby.
- 21:52I Hate Talking: But I think she still has it to this day.
- 21:55I Hate Talking: This is just her baby Artie, and it literally weighed probably.
- 22:00I Hate Talking: I mean, she was a little toddler, and it probably weighed almost half her weight and she just lugged it around with her.
- 22:07I Hate Talking: And so we had to put a face on it to make it other people more uncomfortable.
- 22:13I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 22:14I Hate Talking: So in the Toy Story multiverse, then, was it sapient only once the face was drawn upon it?
- 22:21I Hate Talking: Not to her.
- 22:22I Hate Talking: This thing was her baby doll.
- 22:23I Hate Talking: Yeah, so it was sapient before that then, right, to her, and then the rest of the world accepted it once it had a face drawn on it.
- 22:31I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 22:32I Hate Talking: And then the 3rd and final one that is often cited by fan theorists is the Etch a sketch.
- 22:40I Hate Talking: Because that one does display particular things of sapiens with the ability to think and reason and respond, like when what he says draw or it has the ability to communicate by drawing on itself, so to speak.
- 22:58I Hate Talking: But it does not have any particular human attributes like eyes or a mouth or anything like that.
- 23:05I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 23:05I Hate Talking: So that breaks the rule because it doesn't have human attributes, right?
- 23:09I Hate Talking: It's more of a utilitarian device and does not seem to have any particular human characteristics.
- 23:16I Hate Talking: Like why would the excess, how do you say it?
- 23:19I Hate Talking: -- Etch a -- sketch.
- 23:21I Hate Talking: Why would the etch a sketch be able to think if the notepad can't?
- 23:26I Hate Talking: Well, the theory is that enough kids treat Etch A Sketches as a character within their made up world that they are playing within with said playthings.
- 23:42I Hate Talking: OK, but it's also used too.
- 23:44I Hate Talking: People use it.
- 23:45I Hate Talking: Sometimes the characters will take it and draw themselves.
- 23:48I Hate Talking: So it's not completely independent.
- 23:52I Hate Talking: Right, and that is the theory is that it could have had a mouth and eyes drawn upon it, and then therefore became sapient.
- 24:02I Hate Talking: Did you ever imagine when you were a kid, because this movie came out when we were in elementary school.
- 24:08I Hate Talking: Um, did you ever have Imagination like that your poise were alive.
- 24:17I Hate Talking: No, not Truly alive.
- 24:21I Hate Talking: I played with them as characters within a made up world, but at the end of the day, they were simply inanimate objects used for my own imagination.
- 24:33I Hate Talking: You always knew that, like a little 4 year old Adam knew.
- 24:37I Hate Talking: You'd be like, toy, thank you for being my friend, but you are an inanimate object used by my imagination for my purposes.
- 24:48I Hate Talking: I think so, yes.
- 24:50I Hate Talking: Yeah, it was probably around this time, I don't remember.
- 24:53I Hate Talking: I definitely remember a time in my life where I'd set out my toys, and then I'd watch where exactly where they were.
- 25:01I Hate Talking: Cause maybe when I left the room, if they moved spots, they'd be alive.
- 25:08I Hate Talking: Like I would definitely like look back and like take a photo, mental photo of like.
- 25:13I Hate Talking: It's exactly where you are, how you are, and if you aren't that way when I come back, something's out.
- 25:20I Hate Talking: It would be an interesting crossover if they were to ever create Elf on the Shelf and Toy Story, where like there's like this war going on between the toys that follow the rules and strictly stay in their exact spot and make sure that if they do move, they go back to their previous position so that there is no particular process by which somebody could determine that they were not inanimate versus Elf on the shelf that does that on purpose.
- 25:51I Hate Talking: And like moves things around or creates chaos and like is in a different position.
- 25:57I Hate Talking: Day by day, and it would be like this civil war between Elf on the shelf and Other toys.
- 26:04I Hate Talking: So, yeah, I maybe in the future, we'll talk about our hatred of elf on the shelf.
- 26:12I Hate Talking: This is a personal dislike of it.
- 26:15I Hate Talking: Right?
- 26:16I Hate Talking: And didn't they have to like meet a certain criteria to become purely sapient elves, like, if they didn't do this, then they would just become a toy.
- 26:26I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 26:28I Hate Talking: That's in the books or movie.
- 26:29I Hate Talking: I think it's in the movie, right?
- 26:31I Hate Talking: Like if they don't fulfill the magic of Christmas by making the child believe that they will just be doomed to become.
- 26:37I Hate Talking: Simply a plaything and lose their sapiens.
- 26:41I Hate Talking: I don't know, maybe.
- 26:42I Hate Talking: You know more about this than I do.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 26:46I Hate Talking: Perhaps a movie theory for Christmas time.
- 26:49I Hate Talking: Yeah, I have been getting the itch a little bit lately for Christmas to start.
- 26:54I Hate Talking: It's, it's starting, it's, it always starts around this time of year.
- 26:59I Hate Talking: I feel like sometimes even earlier, maybe May, it's already June.
- 27:03I Hate Talking: Close to July.
- 27:05I Hate Talking: So, but usually, yeah, I'm getting the itch.
- 27:09I Hate Talking: I'm getting excited for Christmas.
- 27:11I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 27:12I Hate Talking: And do y'all wanna know what Adam's gonna do this year for Christmas?
- 27:17I Hate Talking: Do you know what?
- 27:18I Hate Talking: I don't even know what I'm doing for the Christmas this year.
- 27:20I Hate Talking: You do think about it.
- 27:21I Hate Talking: What, what is my Christmas gift gonna be?
- 27:24I Hate Talking: Skylight calendar.
- 27:26I Hate Talking: No, I already got that.
- 27:27I Hate Talking: -- I -- already -- The -- skylight calendar competitor.
- 27:31I Hate Talking: We moved.
- 27:35I Hate Talking: We're in a new house.
- 27:36I Hate Talking: What did you promise me we could do this year?
- 27:38I Hate Talking: Uh, snowball fight.
- 27:41I Hate Talking: No, I don't know where we live.
- 27:43I Hate Talking: I have no idea.
- 27:44I Hate Talking: We had a better chance of that in the previous home.
- 27:47I Hate Talking: I'm going to get permanent Christmas lights.
- 27:51I Hate Talking: Oh, permanent Christmas lights.
- 27:52I Hate Talking: That's true, yep.
- 27:54I Hate Talking: So we'll wait.
- 27:56I Hate Talking: I keep thinking that they'll probably go on sale around like Black Friday or whatnot.
- 28:00I Hate Talking: And then we'll buy them then and hang them up and I can't wait to have permanent lights and that way like Chris not only Christmas but like Valentine's Day, Easter, all those will color coordinate based on the holiday.
- 28:13I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 28:15I Hate Talking: There are a lot of people in the neighborhood that have permanent Christmas lights and will make it.
- 28:18I Hate Talking: Whatever green for Saint Patty's Day or right now -- pink for Easter -- and so on and so forth.
- 28:24I Hate Talking: Yeah, right now the World Cup's going on and so there's some like red, white, and blue ones.
- 28:29I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 28:29I Hate Talking: How fun would that be?
- 28:30I Hate Talking: We'll have to make sure we get the ones that can be color coded.
- 28:33I Hate Talking: So one other observation about Toy Story.
- 28:38I Hate Talking: Is the RC car in the final scene where they light the rocket.
- 28:43I Hate Talking: And I had not noticed until this watch, and this is probably, I don't know, 10 or more watches of Toy Story, I've never noticed this before, is that the controller appears to be left behind.
- 28:54I Hate Talking: already, you already knew that or you noticed it.
- 28:59I Hate Talking: I noticed it.
- 29:00I Hate Talking: We both noticed it this time.
- 29:02I Hate Talking: So basically, the RC car is free now.
- 29:06I Hate Talking: He is not controlled, but is he?
- 29:11I Hate Talking: Because he only could go where the rocket sent him.
- 29:14I Hate Talking: So we do not know what he did.
- 29:16I Hate Talking: I think he still, it seemed like if he was not being controlled, he still had the sapient to control himself.
- 29:23I Hate Talking: Like if the controller was being used, that is what he did.
- 29:27I Hate Talking: -- But -- he didn't control himself because the -- rocket was leading in -- that particular scene.
- 29:32I Hate Talking: No, in other scenes in the movie, he was jumping up and down and moving about without being controlled.
- 29:40I Hate Talking: OK.
- 29:41I Hate Talking: So is that like a higher Power thing then that we can control ourselves, but then someone can override us.
- 29:50I Hate Talking: I was not getting at anything very theoretical in that statement.
- 29:56I Hate Talking: I was just noticing that the controller had been left behind and Andy probably will not enjoy the RC car as much because it doesn't seem like it would be much fun to have an RC car that has no controller.
- 30:07I Hate Talking: However, if he does treat it as a character, and that imbues it with the Sapiens That perhaps he will continue to play with said RC Car as a character within his imagination imaginary.
- 30:24I Hate Talking: Scenarios.
- 30:26I Hate Talking: So one takeaway I had from the movie.
- 30:29I Hate Talking: Was that apparently Andy, the boy in Toy Story 1, is 10 years old.
- 30:36I Hate Talking: We have a 10 year old and I was like thinking about him like I don't.
- 30:41I Hate Talking: Think he plays with toys like this anymore.
- 30:45I Hate Talking: He's very into Nerf guns.
- 30:47I Hate Talking: He's very into water fights.
- 30:49I Hate Talking: And soccer and things like that.
- 30:53I Hate Talking: But I don't see him wanting to take toys and play a lot of imaginary games nowadays.
- 31:01I Hate Talking: I suppose not six year old does now they're more into.
- 31:06I Hate Talking: Keeping toys as collector collector items.
- 31:10I Hate Talking: Yes, he has a whole, yeah, he doesn't want to touch them, doesn't wanna play with them.
- 31:15I Hate Talking: He keeps them all pristine and nice.
- 31:17I Hate Talking: Which is a major part of the plot in Toy Story 2 or 3.
- 31:22I Hate Talking: Or 4, I don't know.
- 31:24I Hate Talking: You mean when the adult, the, -- the chicken -- guy, yes, I think that's 2.
- 31:30I Hate Talking: This is why I'm glad we're rewatching these because they all kind of blend in.
- 31:34I Hate Talking: They do, and I guess we're finding new things upon our rewatch nonetheless.
- 31:41I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 31:41I Hate Talking: So if you have never heard of the word sapient before, you can always let us know in a comment or email or text message and perhaps share it with another person that you would like to inform the phrase sapiens and how it relates to Toy Story.
- 31:58I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's, I mean, Toy Story is popular now, right now, it's going on, right?
- 32:03I Hate Talking: Lots of places are having, we just had a restaurant the other today that had a bunch of Toy Story stuff.
- 32:09I Hate Talking: So you can sound super intellectual and talk about, have you ever thought about the sapiens of Toy Story?
- 32:16I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 32:17I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 32:19I Hate Talking: Maybe we'll do Toy Story 234.
- 32:22I Hate Talking: And 5 at some point, if this is an interesting subject.
- 32:27I Hate Talking: So from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
