- 0:16Speaker 1: Martin Dole. Good morning to your assistant commissioner. Good morning, Katie,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning. Talk us
- 0:24Speaker 1: through what happened last night.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Katie, So about half past nine last night, police
- 0:32Speaker 2: Communications in daw And received a call in relation to
- 0:36Speaker 2: a male that had been assaulted on Gap Road. The
- 0:38Speaker 2: call was in relation to requesting an ambulance. So Saint
- 0:41Speaker 2: John's attended at that incident and they located a male
- 0:45Speaker 2: and a female there and the male had suffered a
- 0:48Speaker 2: severe head injury. They took him to hospital and later
- 0:51Speaker 2: we advised that that injury was significantly serious and that
- 0:56Speaker 2: there was some concerns for that male. So we went
- 0:58Speaker 2: and established a crime and we've got detectives working on
- 1:01Speaker 2: that currently.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Martin. Do we have any idea of how old this
- 1:05Speaker 1: gentleman was.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yes, Katie, so it's a sixty seven year old Indigenous
- 1:10Speaker 2: male and currently he's recorded as being stable with suspected
- 1:17Speaker 2: injuries of bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull, and
- 1:19Speaker 2: there's some discussion that he may be medivactor adelaide this today.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Oh, that is horrendous. Do we have any idea what's
- 1:28Speaker 1: going on?
- 1:30Speaker 2: So we don't, Katie. This is very early in the investigation.
- 1:33Speaker 2: As I said, we were called at the request for
- 1:36Speaker 2: an ambulance. We weren't called for a disturbance of fighting.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Saint John's attended and conveyed that mail to hospital and
- 1:43Speaker 2: we later found out that the injuries are a result
- 1:46Speaker 2: of what appears to be a very serious assault. So
- 1:49Speaker 2: we've got crime taken carriage of that and they're conducting
- 1:51Speaker 2: investigations as we speak to try and identify exactly what happened.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Martin, talk us through exactly where it
- 1:58Speaker 1: happened and what time of the day.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So this was reported to us at nine thirty five
- 2:04Speaker 2: last night and it was on Gap Road in the
- 2:07Speaker 2: vicinity of Jiho Restaurant, which is very near the ABC studios.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Okay, and from your perspective, now, from a police perspective,
- 2:15Speaker 1: what are the next steps in this investigation, so.
- 2:20Speaker 2: We've got detectives, a team of detectives working on that
- 2:22Speaker 2: this morning. Obviously, we always call for assistance from the public.
- 2:26Speaker 2: If anybody witnessed any incidents in that area yesterday evening.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be at nine thirty five, it
- 2:31Speaker 2: could be in the hours before that, any unusual behavior
- 2:34Speaker 2: or fighting. If anyone is aware of CCTV in that
- 2:37Speaker 2: area or driving past and saw anybody being assaulted, we'd
- 2:41Speaker 2: urge them to contact police and let us know what
- 2:43Speaker 2: you saw.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I know that we do have a lot
- 2:45Speaker 1: of people that listened to the show down in Alas Springs.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Assistant Commissioner. What you said there with that bleeding on
- 2:51Speaker 1: the brain and also a fractured skull, I believe you said.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, it must be pretty concerning to you to
- 2:58Speaker 1: see an assault which seems to be of such a
- 3:02Speaker 1: severe nature.
- 3:04Speaker 2: O Katie, absolutely concerning a horrific description of injuries. Any
- 3:09Speaker 2: assaults on people are just not shouldn't be tolerated, and
- 3:13Speaker 2: this type of violent behavior shouldn't be tolerated, not in
- 3:15Speaker 2: our springs, not anywhere in the Northern Territory.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And do we have any idea at this point in time.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I know it's still early days, as you've said, but
- 3:22Speaker 1: any idea at this point in time as to whether
- 3:25Speaker 1: you know the victim was known to those who have
- 3:28Speaker 1: you know, who have assaulted him.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Look, Katie, I just don't have that information. I'm really
- 3:35Speaker 2: not sure that we're we're aware of where exactly that
- 3:38Speaker 2: assoul of code or who was involved. So I don't
- 3:40Speaker 2: have those details to be able to give you this morning.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah. No, we appreciate your time. I know it's on
- 3:45Speaker 1: very short notice and you know, with limited detail at
- 3:48Speaker 1: this point with that investigation very much underway. So Assistant
