- 0:07Cleveland Indians faced the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium on Wednesday, April 11, 1979.
- 0:13Cleveland had been a below average team for decades and were coached by Jeff Torborg in his final year with the Indians.
- 0:20Texas was coached by Pat Corrales in his first season with the Rangers.
- 0:24The Rangers have been shuffling through five managers in three seasons despite finishing in second place in both 1977 and 78 behind the Royals.
- 0:32This audio recording is from the Cleveland Radio broadcast featuring announcers Joe Tate and Herb Scor.
- 0:38The umpires for tonight's game will be John James behind the plate, Mike Thompson at first base, Fred Spen at second base, and the third base umpire is Jeff Brown.
- 1:01Some interesting comments in the newspapers this morning. All of the Major League Baseball they have some of the umpires who are, I don't know whether they're on strike or they're locked out,
- 1:11it's a difference of opinion, I appraise it, but they're not working.
- 1:14And they pick at the ballpark and they are passing out literature outside the ballpark and they are extensively interviewed by television and radio people and of course newspaper people.
- 1:23Here in the Texas papers this morning one of the umpires was quoted as saying that if Fred Spen umpires in the American League he will never work with him,
- 1:32he will never ride in the same taxi cab with him, and he will never go anyplace that he is.
- 1:37Fred Spen is a professional umpire and has been signed apparently to a three year contract by the Major League.
- 1:42And the other umpires say that when they go back to work they don't say if, they think they know that someday this thing will be settled they'll go back to work.
- 1:48But they say there's not a Major League umpire presently who will ever work in the same ballgame with Fred Spen so this situation is not good to start with.
- 1:58And as it is prolonged I think there will be some more hard feelings and some harder feelings go along and it's really not good for the game but for anybody.
- 2:05And hopefully it will be settled one of these days in the near future.
- 2:08In Major League Baseball this afternoon in the American League, Toronto is to play at Chicago, it has been postponed because of rain, they'll try it again tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:15New York is at Baltimore, it is Figueroa against Palmer, each team scored two in the first inning, they have now played three and it is two to two.
- 2:24Chris Chambers had a home run in that game his first of the year just came in the fourth inning and so the Yankees have taken at least a three to two lead, they're still batting in the fourth.
- 2:33Detroit is in Kansas City, they'll try it again after being rained out last night.
- 2:36Billingham against Gura, later on Minnesota's at California, the twins bombed the Angels in Tanana last night eight to one.
- 2:43Oakland will be in Seattle and Boston and Milwaukee are not scheduled, they'll play their final game in that series tomorrow.
- 2:51In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals were to entertain the Chicago Cubs and they were rained out.
- 2:56Montreal and New York played, they went 11 innings just today, they went 14, today they did it in 11 and again it was Montreal winning it by a count of three to two, the same score they beat them by yesterday.
- 3:07Three runs on tenets and no errors from Montreal, two runs nine nets and one error for the Mets, they had just 5,980 in New York.
- 3:14It was Rogers, Sosa, Freiman and Bonson from Montreal, Falcone and Lockwood worked for the Mets with the win going to Sosa to save for Bonson and it was Lockwood taking the loss.
- 3:27Sosa already in this young season has won two and lost one.
- 3:31Tony Perez had a home run in the 11th inning to win that game.
- 3:35Cincinnati's at Atlanta tonight, Cincinnati Reds are leading 5-0, Atlanta batting in the bottom half of the third at Yuma against Salomon.
- 3:42Pittsburgh against Philadelphia, Blylemon against Carlton and they're all tied up at one, they have gone three innings.
- 3:48The Dodgers will be in Houston with Sutton going against Ken Fosh and San Diego will be in San Francisco and that rounds out the Major League Baseball action.
- 3:58And in the NBA tonight, playoffs underway, New Jersey at Philadelphia, Atlanta will be in Houston.
- 4:05And here in Arlington, Texas, they tell us it is 67 degrees, the wind is blowing in from right field but it's right now just a very gentle breeze and it really should not affect the flight of the baseball too much.
- 4:19Eric Wilkins warming down in the Indian bullpen is opposing pitchers, Ryu Coma has finished his warm-ups and he is in the ranger dugout waiting for the rangers to charge onto the field.
- 4:30330 feet down the left and right field lines here in Arlington, Texas, 400 feet to center field, 370 in the power alleys and there's an 11-foot fence that circles the ballpark.
- 4:40There are seats completely circling this ballpark, it is really a one-deck affair and the seats in the outfield are considered their bleacher seats and everything else around the other area are reserves of our seats.
- 4:54And we will now have the playing and the singing of our national anthem.
- 4:58Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
- 5:14Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
- 5:29And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
- 5:45Oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

- 6:25Steve Comer on the mound for the Texas Rangers. This young man has had a very interesting story. He went to the University of Minnesota and Comer was not drafted.
- 6:39In June of 1976 they drafted 786 youngsters from colleges and high schools. They did not add Comer to their list.
- 6:50And funny things happened in baseball. During the winter instructional league that year in Sarasota, the manager of the Texas Ranger Farm Club needed some help.
- 7:01And he called the scout, Joe Marchese, up around Minnesota. And he in turn called somebody else and they put a call in to Nick Sievert who was at the University of Minnesota.
- 7:12He's the baseball coach there. And they asked about Comer. He said, I think he's a pretty good kid. They asked for his telephone number.
- 7:17It didn't take much to persuade him to head for Florida. Comer then was working in a construction crew.
- 7:23He went to Florida and what happened after that is history. He was 7-2 in 1976. He went to Tulsa in 77 with 7-4, 6-4 in 1977 with Tucson.
- 7:35And last year with the Texas Rangers, they won 111 and lost 5 with an earned run average of 2.30. Against the Indians he was 2-0 with an earned run average of 1.59.
- 7:45Toby Harris set the step in. Steve Comer set the goal. Joe Tate is always ready to go and he's here to tell you that it is.
- 7:53Nice for baseball. Thank you Herb. Good evening everybody. The right hander, Steve Comer, looks in guts to find from Jim Sunberg, the first pitch of the ball game.
- 8:01High and inside, off the mid of Sunberg, back to the screen, ball one.
- 8:05Toby Harris, right hand batter, 3-17 on the year with an RBI, 1-4 in last night's ball game. Comer deals again a swing and a miss. On the count evens it 1-1.
- 8:16We have had a last minute change for the Texas Rangers at first base. Putnam is playing first base in place of Jorgensen.
- 8:231-1 to Harris, low and away, two balls, one strike. I have heard nothing to the contrary. I will assume that Putnam is in Jorgensen's number 8 spot on the order.
- 8:34Let's wait and see when they line them up offensively. Harris stepping back, 2-1 count on the right hand batter.
- 8:43Wind up by Comer, 2-1 pitch and Harris looks at a tighter for twice and the count is 2-2.
- 8:53Comer and Wilkins wear it off in this one tonight at Arlington Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
- 9:02Comer ready, now not ready, steps back. All set, delivers, Arrah lifts a foul ball, that will go to the right end and it will also go well out of play.
- 9:14Sunberg giving chase but no chance and the count remains at 2-2. Defensively it is Putnam at first base, Wills at second, Norman short, Bell at third,
- 9:25Sample in left, Oliver in center, Grub in right, Sunberg catching and on and on the right hander, Steve Comer.
- 9:35Wind up, 2-2 pitch, Harris takes the fast ball low and a full count of 3-2. Dave Garcia coaching at third base, Joe Nasik on the first base side.
- 9:47Pay off pitch to Toby Harris, swing and that is struck out.
- 9:52There's something I haven't seen Joe, sitting in the box seat area a few rows behind the Indian dugout,
- 9:58Derwin Merrill and Jim Evans, American League umpires. They have their umpiring uniforms on and they're, I wonder if they get in the ballpark.
- 10:09Rick Manning a left hand batter, this will be his first at bat this season. Bell to the edge of the grass at third, Comer delivers fast ball low ball one.
- 10:19Rick had a good spring, he finished spring training getting five hits in his last six at bats.
- 10:24Patti Bonds on deck, wind up with a 1-0 pitch, breaking ball outside and high 2-0.
- 10:31Comer has not faced a batter since he worked four innings against the Yankees in an exhibition game on March the 30th.
- 10:38Wind up with a 2-0 pitch, a foul ball well back out of play to the left and the count is 2-1.
- 10:48Comer 1-11 and lost by, he was 2-0 against the Indians in two relief appearances.
- 10:56Wind up by Steve in the 2-1 pitch and Manning hits it hard to third. Bell on one knee, back hands up, throw count.
- 11:03Bell went to one knee toward the foul line, back hand to the ball, straightened up and throughout Manning.
- 11:09Now there are two outs in the first inning.
- 11:12On your number 25, Bobby Bonds.
- 11:18Bobby Bonds, finds four for 18 of the year with a run batted in, oh for four last night, right hand batter.
- 11:25The outside heard, Comer looks very quick.
- 11:28Yes he is.
- 11:29Pitch, foul ball, low ball one.
- 11:34Throwing the ball well, good flattery, they got Toby Herron.
- 11:382-0 pitch and Thornton out, Bonds out in front of a breaking ball and the count is 1-1.
- 11:43Change up.
- 11:51One ball, one strike with two outs.
- 11:55Bonds being played to pull with power and the ball is bundled, fouled back to the base of the screen.
- 12:01One ball, two strikes.
- 12:04And they Thornton on deck.
- 12:08In the top half of the first inning,
- 12:15Steve Comer looks and gets the sign from Sunberg.
- 12:20One-two pitch to Bonds, outside.
- 12:23Two balls, two strikes.
- 12:27Comer, 6-3, 207 pounds.
- 12:32Again out in front of the breaking ball and this one is bounced foul over to the third base dugout.
- 12:39They were somewhat sitting on the dugout steps, picks it off.
- 12:43Two balls, two strikes.
- 12:45Bonds kicking the dirt around to the batter's box.
- 12:51Harris struck out, Manning bounced to third, two-two pitch to Bonds, way outside.
- 12:55Sunberg leaping quickly to his right, picks it off at a full count of three and two.
- 13:02Barnight waits against Jenkins in the finale of this series.
- 13:07And it's off to Boston.
- 13:11Here comes the payoff pitch.
- 13:13Bonds swings away and chops his foul beyond the dugout. It's still three and two.
- 13:17Looks like the umpire has had somebody else's seats there being asked to move.
- 13:21That's the second time I've seen them move since they came in.
- 13:27Somebody better check those stuff.
- 13:30Here's the three-two pitch to Bonds, wraps it back to the shortstop on the third hop.
- 13:34Norman has it, throws and got him by less than a step.
- 13:38On the first inning, Steve Comer puts him away, one-two-three.
- 13:42And at the end of one-half inning, the Indians stuffing and the Texas Rangers are coming to bat.
- 13:48Nobody's quite like you, you got your own thing to do.
- 13:55You like your beer, light and clear, refreshing like mountain air.
- 14:02You like your blue jeans, older, like your mountain folder.
- 14:09Head for the mountains, the mountains are good.
- 14:12Just reach out and you'll be here. Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of good beer.
- 14:26Head for the mountains, the mountains are good.
- 14:29Just reach out and you'll be here. Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of good beer.
- 14:42Head for the mountains, the mountains are good.
- 14:46Checking the defensive alignment for the Cleveland Indians, Andre Thornton at first base,
- 14:54Dwayne Kuyper at second base, Tom Verizon at short, Toby Herra at third, Ted Cox in left,
- 15:00the center fielder Rick Manning, the right fielder, Bobby Bonds,
- 15:04the catcher is Gary Alexander down the mound, young Eric Wilkins,
- 15:08Frank Lucchese coaching at third base, first inning at first,
- 15:12and it will be Will Campbell and Oliver to test Eric Wilkins.
- 15:17Up Wills, a switch hitter going to the left side against right-hander Eric Wilkins.
- 15:21Two for eight on the season and 0 for 4 in last night's game.
- 15:27Herra comes to the edge of the grass at third, just inside the cover of the grass,
- 15:31and Eric Wilkins winds up and delivers, and the first pitch is Rip Powell to the left,
- 15:35back up into the chairs, there's a fellow walking along with about 10 hot dogs
- 15:40and six or seven soft drinks and that thing went right by his ear.
- 15:44He didn't realize that he was in the flight path until he heard it go by.
- 15:49Off that it hit, what a miss.
- 15:52Strike from the couch, wind up, Wilkins throws to Wills,
- 15:55a line drive right at Dwayne Kiper, one out.
- 15:59Will smashes a liner right back to Kiper at second base and there's one down,
- 16:03and it brings on Bill Sample, the left fielder.
- 16:07Sample 1 for 4 with an RBI on the season and 0 for 3 with an RBI on the sacrifice fly last night.
- 16:15Sample sporting a red 5 trimmed in blue on the back of his flight home Texas uniform,
- 16:20the Indians of course in the traveling gray.
- 16:22Bri will be home next Tuesday against these Texas Rangers at 12.05 at the stadium.
- 16:28Wind up and the pitch and Sample wraps the bouncer to his left,
- 16:32Toby Herra picks and throws down in.
- 16:35Toby Herra ranging along the edge of the grass running towards second base,
- 16:38made the pick up of an eye of the bouncing ball and then threw a line into first,
- 16:42and that is 2-1.
- 16:45This brings on Al Oliver.
- 16:48Al Oliver was the hitting hero out here last night with 2 colossal flouts
- 16:53through a 40 mile an hour wind into the seats and right.
- 16:56A left hand batter, 3 for 8 on the year, 2 homers 5 runs batted in,
- 17:002 for 4 last night with 2 homers and 3 runs batted home.
- 17:08Wind up by Wilkins and here comes the first pitch to Oliver and he takes the strike
- 17:12of the knees, strike one.
- 17:19Harold pulled well off the line at third, Outfield pulled around, strike one pitch,
- 17:24Oliver swinging a moose on a breaking ball, strike two.
- 17:27I have asked you this before Herb but it seems appropriate to ask again,
- 17:30do you remember your first start in the big leagues?
- 17:32Yes I do.
- 17:33What happened?
- 17:34Long time ago back in Detroit.
- 17:36Oh yeah I remember that, way back.
- 17:39We won the game but it was a struggle.
- 17:41Here comes the 0-2 pitch to Oliver, high fastball 1 and 2.
- 17:46I think I walked 10 men.
- 17:49I didn't wind up many times that day, I was always in the stretch.
- 17:52One ball, two strikes and two outs.
- 17:55First inning, no score, Tribe went in order against Coleman.
- 18:01Wilkins winds up and delivers the 1-2 and Oliver is swinging
- 18:04and a miss, rock him out.
- 18:06Good fastball by Eric.
- 18:08So it's three up, three down against Wilkins and the first we've played one at Arlington.
- 18:13The score, clear but nothing, Texas nothing.
- 18:16What's the easiest, most economical way to get the crew to the game?

- 18:41Come in and see us today at Spitzer Dodge in Columbus.
- 18:51It's different.
- 18:53It's exciting.

- 19:10Every Wednesday is ladies night and happy hour lasts all day long.
- 19:14Marco Polo, 1605 West Fifth Avenue in Columbus, right across from North Star.
- 19:20The Pirates going long ball in the fifth inning of play hitting a two run homer.
- 19:27And that is going to put the Pirates on top four to two.
- 19:32Yankees now have a five to two lead on Baltimore with Baltimore batting in the fifth.
- 19:38Andre Thornton leads off with a second inning for the Indians.
- 19:42One for 13 on the year with an RBI one for four last night.
- 19:46Comer delivers and Thornton hits a bouncing ball to the shortstop. Norman picks it up, throws across and there's one away.
- 19:53Andre Thornton grounding to the shortstop.
- 19:56Brings on Gary Alexander, the Cleveland catcher.
- 19:59Alex one for 13 on the year with an RBI and one for three in last night's ball game.
- 20:07Dodgers failed in the first at Houston tonight.
- 20:10Sutton against Ken Porsch and of course the interesting
- 20:13side light or even highlight to that game is that Ken Porsch who pitched a no hitter
- 20:18the last time out is going to try and go for two in a row tonight.
- 20:23Alexander one out, nobody on.
- 20:27First pitch to Alex going to bump the ball, shoves the bat back out of the way in time.
- 20:32Ball one, pitch was away.
- 20:35Kind of opened up the middle for Alex with the center fielder shaded in the left center.
- 20:39Shortstop Norman pulled over and back.
- 20:42One old pitch and Alex hits a high fly ball to right field going over is Johnny Grubb toward the foul line. Reaches out, makes the running catch.
- 20:49Neatly done by Grubb and right two down.
- 20:53Here's Jim Norris with Manning back on the lineup.
- 20:56Norris has returned to the DH role and has been moved down to the number six spot of the order.
- 21:02Jim is six for 16 on the year and one for four in last night's ball game.
- 21:07Norris is six safely in all four of the Indian ball games.
- 21:12Also has the team leadership in field with three.
- 21:16Ted Cox on deck.
- 21:20Wind up on the pitch, Norris drives it off to the left and it is a foul ball. Strike one.
- 21:31Strike one to count.
- 21:35Delan on the grass, the third.
- 21:41Wind up and strike one pitch.
- 21:43Fast ball inside, one ball, one strike.
- 21:48Ted Cox on deck.
- 21:53Now the wind up on the one-one pitch. Norris fouls it back over the standing screen into the seats in the second section.
- 22:02This is for all intents and purposes a single deck up there all the way around, but they do have a raised section behind home plate.
- 22:10There is an upper deck behind it up over the press box, swinging a foul to the screen.
- 22:15One ball, two strikes.
- 22:17That has just been recently added here.
- 22:22And they put this ballpark together back, I believe, in about 1965 for Triple-A ballers, who needed 9,000.
- 22:28Bouncing ball off the bat of Norris, the third, on a high hop to Buddy Bill who grabs a rifle to first, just in time to get Norris.
- 22:35And the side is retired again, one, two, three.
- 22:38At the end of it, inning and a half, it is Cleveland nothing, Texas nothing.
- 22:44Nobody's quite like you, you got your own thing to do.
- 22:50You like your beer, light and clear, refreshing like mountain air.
- 22:57You like your blue jeans older, like your mountain folder.
- 23:04Head for the mountains, the mountains of Butch.
- 23:07Reach out and you'll be here.
- 23:11Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of Butch beer.
- 23:20Head for the mountains, the mountains of Butch. Reach out and you'll be here.
- 23:27Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of Butch beer.
- 23:35Don't just reach for your beer. Head for the mountains of Butch.
- 23:39That's Butch saying, what's the story?
- 23:45In the home half of the second inning, Johnny Grubb, Buddy Bellman, Oscar Gamble come to bat this afternoon in the National League.
- 23:52Montreal won 11 to beat the Mets 3-2 on a 20-per-res home run.
- 23:56Cincinnati leads Atlanta 5-1 in the fourth inning tonight.
- 23:59Pittsburgh 4-2 over Philadelphia in the fifth.
- 24:02Still to be heard from, San Diego is San Francisco and the Dodgers fail on the first of Houston.
- 24:07Wind up by Eric Wilkins in the first pitch, the left-hand batting Johnny Grubb is low, ball one.
- 24:13John 2-9 on the year with a home run, two runs batted in and one for four in last night's contest.
- 24:20Wind up by Wilkins and the pitch to Grubb and John drills a foul to the left back into the seat.
- 24:26And the count evens it a ball and a strike.
- 24:30And Grubb also broke his bat.
- 24:33Toronto and the White Sox reigned out in Chicago this afternoon and will reschedule it for tomorrow.
- 24:38Yankees 5-2 over Baltimore now in the fifth.
- 24:40Detroit failed on the first in Kansas City, that's Stubbingham against Gora.
- 24:44Boston and Milwaukee are not scheduled.
- 24:46Minnesota plays California and Oakland and Seattle later tonight in the NBA playoff.
- 24:50Philadelphia leads New Jersey at the end of the first quarter, 33-22.
- 24:55That is not a surprise, is it?
- 24:57No, it does not surprise me.
- 24:59Who do you think is going to win, ultimately?
- 25:01Washington.
- 25:02Washington?
- 25:03Yep. One ball and one strike.
- 25:05Pitch to Grubb, bouncing ball, shortstopmerizer, gets it on the hop, fires the first.
- 25:11Grubb is gone and there's one away in the second inning.
- 25:15And I think I have now probably just put the kiss of death on the Washington Bullets
- 25:19because I have a great facility for picking wrongs.
- 25:22They should win it, even in my way of thinking.
- 25:25Here's Buddy Bell.
- 25:26Bell won three in the year one for four last night, had a double.
- 25:30Buddy defensively in these first two games has sparkled a third.
- 25:33Which is no surprise to us.
- 25:34That's right.
- 25:36Wind up, and the pitch to Bell, and hit him.
- 25:39And inside fastball, put Buddy going by, and Bell has been hit by the pitch.
- 25:45Now Buddy trots down to first base.
- 25:48Texas trainer comes trotting out to see if he's all right.
- 25:51Trainer is Bill Ziegler.
- 25:53Just a glancing blow.
- 25:58Well, Bell at first.
- 26:00Alexander going out to talk to Wilkins with one out and now one on.
- 26:03Oscar Gamble, the left-hand batting designated hitter, is due.
- 26:07Oscar won for four on the year one for two last nights.
- 26:10Jerry Alexander going out to the mound to talk with Eric Wilkins.
- 26:14Calm him down a bit.
- 26:16Pitching with the man on first for the first time.
- 26:19Applause.
- 26:26Wilkins working from the stretch.
- 26:28Bell with a short lead at first base.
- 26:30Andre Thornton holding out the bag.
- 26:32The pitch is low and away, ball one.
- 26:38This is the home half of the second inning and there is no score.
- 26:41Comer put the first six Indians away in order, and Wilkins exposed to the first four Rangers before hitting Buddy Bell,
- 26:47and now Gamble at bat with Bell at first base.
- 26:50And the 1-0 pitch. Oscar drooled, went back over the screen into the seat.
- 26:54The count is even. It's 1-1, and a fan down below. It's made a fine catch.
- 26:591-1 count. Gamble sporting a full beard and a clipped afro.
- 27:10Same amount of hair, just relocated.
- 27:13Throw over to first base, Bell diving back to the bag.
- 27:16Didn't have to, it was just a lob throw, but he's taking no chances.
- 27:20Hit the deck.
- 27:22And the home plate umpire, John James, goes to work with a whisk broom.
- 27:32The stretch, and Wilkins delivers the 1-1 pitch.
- 27:36Gamble takes low, two balls and a strike.
- 27:40We'll be getting a station break for you here very shortly.
- 27:51Look for the sign. Wilkins the stretch.
- 27:55Bell leads it first, 2-1 pitch. Gamble chops the ball foul into the first base.
- 28:00Dug out, and now we will pause for station identification.
- 28:03This is the Cleveland Indians baseball news.
- 28:06This has been your Sunday mornings with Gene Beatty here on 3WJ.
- 28:10That's WWWJ Johnstown.
- 28:202-2 count. Wilkins to Gamble bouncing ball off the glove of Thornton.
- 28:25Ricket chase off to Kuyper and everybody's third.
- 28:28Thornton going to his right, got the heel of the glove on the ball.
- 28:32The vice versa.
- 28:34Bounce way up in the air.
- 28:36Charge to Andre Thornton, and now the Rangers have runners at first and at second.
- 28:43And nobody out. One man out.
- 28:49This brings on the catcher, Jim Sunberg.
- 28:54Sunberg, 1-7 on the air with an RBI and 0-3 in last night's ball game.
- 29:04Right hand batter against the right hander, Eric Wilkins.
- 29:11One out here in the second inning. The pitch to Sunberg, he poured him a fastball, strike one.
- 29:26Stretched by Wilkins, runners leading first and second.
- 29:28Strike one, pitch to Sunberg. Fastball inside.
- 29:32One ball, one strike.
- 29:35On deck is Pat Putnam.
- 29:38First baseman, a last minute substitution in the starting lineup.
- 29:45Stretch, look back, and pitch. Fastball low, two and one.
- 29:54Putnam and Sample and Norman will be at least somewhat familiar with Wilkins because of the PCL.
- 30:01I think he said, he told you last night he pitched against him once.
- 30:05Stretch, two-one pitch. Fastball inside.
- 30:09Three and one to count.
- 30:11Alexander steps out in front of the plate, throws the ball, and a few words of encouragement back to Eric Wilkins.
- 30:17Eric is not missing by a lot. He's just missing almost in the same spot just above the knees off the inside corner.
- 30:22Rupp opened the inning with a ground ball to short.
- 30:25Funnybell was hit by a pitch and Oscar gambled safe on an error charge to Andre Thornton.
- 30:30Three-one count on Jim Sunberg. Stretched by Wilkins in the pitch, he flips it low, ball for it.
- 30:39The bases are loaded with one out.
- 30:47Bell goes to third, gambled down to second. Sunberg on it first.
- 30:52And out to the mound, Charlie Hartenstein.
- 30:57The batter is Pat Putnam.
- 31:01Putnam a left-hand hitter, two for three in the year with three RBIs.
- 31:05And on top of that, he had a pinch hit single for a run batted in here last night.
- 31:09At Tucson last year, Putnam hit 309 with 21 homers and 96 RBIs.
- 31:14So Hartenstein has had a chat with Wilkins and heads back into the dugout.
- 31:23And Pat Putnam gets ready.
- 31:28The Rangers have loaded the bases in the second inning and there is, to this point anyway, no score in the ball game.
- 31:43First pitch, Putnam lifts a foul ball off to the left.
- 31:46It's Souvenir out of play and the count is strike one.
- 31:56Bell at third, gambled at second. Sunberg at first.
- 32:05Wind up in the pitch.
- 32:06Wing and a miss.
- 32:08Run for a pitch down below the knees.
- 32:09That might have been the fourth ball. Looks like the bottom really fell out of it.
- 32:20Wilkins waiting while Putnam steps back and now steps back.
- 32:28Wilkins standing erect on the mound, gets the sign, glances over to third.
- 32:33Here's the pitch to Putnam, foul ball back over the screen into the seat.
- 32:38And the count is strike two.
- 32:46Bases loaded, one out.
- 32:54Wind up on the pitch.
- 32:55Putnam went for one low, gets away from Alexander.
- 32:58He goes back quickly, picks it up on the edge of the grass behind home plate and there's no advance of third by Buddy Bell.
- 33:07Dix gives the ball back to Eric Wilkins and Eric takes that walk back to the mound.
- 33:12A hit batter and Eric and a walk to blow to the bases for the Rangers with one out on the second inning.
- 33:18On deck is the shortstop Nelson Norman, the number nine man on the Texas order.
- 33:25Wilkins cranks up the one-two pitch to Putnam.
- 33:28Fast ball going inside, two balls, two strikes.
- 33:37Putnam with a 18 and right at the back of the home plate, steps back and then in.
- 33:43Rotates the bat and ready.
- 33:47Two-two pitch, swing and a bouncing foul back to the screen.
- 33:52That remains even if two balls, two strikes.
- 34:01On half of the second inning, Rangers won last night's ball, game five to nothing.
- 34:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 34:10Here's the pitch to Putnam, a high fly ball to right center field.
- 34:15To his right, Bobby Bond makes the catcher come and spell the throws going to third base.
- 34:20Get on over to here, the run scores from third on Cuddy Bell,
- 34:23slips it up right, Putnam with a sacrifice fly and the Rangers lead one to nothing.
- 34:33Bell scoring from third base but there's no further advance.
- 34:40First run of the ball game and it was accomplished without a base hit.
- 34:46Oh, it's two on and two out, here's Nelson Norman, the shortstop, right hand back.
- 34:51Norman one for four on the year one for two last time.
- 34:58Gambled at second, Sundberg at first.
- 35:01The stretch by Wilkins and the pitch to Norman, swing and a miss.
- 35:06Strike one.
- 35:10The deck is pumped willed.
- 35:18The stretch, look back and the strike one pitch and Norman jammed with a fast ball.
- 35:24The count is even at a ball when it strikes.
- 35:34Look in for the side.
- 35:36The stretch, look back, one one pitch, hit hard up the middle,
- 35:40Verizon down, ball off his glove into center field, Gambled scores,
- 35:44ball tops away from Manning but he stays with it.
- 35:47Sundberg stops at second and it's an RBI single for Norman to make it through to helping.
- 35:53Tommy Verizon came within about a half a foot of grabbing that ball,
- 35:57just off the end of the glove.
- 36:01First hit, second run.
- 36:05Both these runs will be unearned incidentally.
- 36:11And that brings up the top of the order.
- 36:14Eric Wilkins now has just about done it all.
- 36:17He's had a strikeout, he's walked the batter, he's given up a hit, he has hit a batter.
- 36:22Sundberg stops at second base.
- 36:25Bump wills, he opens with a line drive to the second base.
- 36:29Texas leads two to nothing.
- 36:36Eric coming into the edge of the grass at third base.
- 36:40First base side dropping back, follow that stand better.
- 36:43Stretched by Wilkins with a pitch to Will, swing and a miss, strike one.
- 36:50Texas two runs, one hit, the Indians no runs, no hits, and an error.
- 36:57A stretch and a pitch.
- 37:01Line drive and a center field, a base hit.
- 37:03Rounding third is Sundberg, here comes Manning, throw to the plate, he is out of the plate.
- 37:09Line throw by Rick Manning.
- 37:12Manning fired his strike to Alexander Nutz, puts the tag on Sundberg, sliding in.
- 37:17And the inning is over, a base hit.
- 37:19That makes the final total for the frame, two runs, two hits and an error,
- 37:23with a man left, with two men left, and the score at the end of two innings of play,
- 37:29Texas two, Cleveland nothing.
- 37:31At Shell Auto Care, being good with your hands isn't good enough.
- 37:35Their mechanics have to pass tests for brake work, tune-ups, air conditioning, and front end work.
- 37:40They have to be certified by Shell, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
- 37:44You know, it's funny, a lot of people don't expect much from mechanics,
- 37:48but they're the people who haven't been to Shell Auto Care.
- 37:51It's everything you never expected car repairs to be.
- 37:57Sunset in the mountains, the sparkling waters in each stream slowly turning to shining gold.
- 38:06The high craggy peaks quietly glow in the fading light, and the stillness falls like a soft secret snow.
- 38:13It's time to sit back, relax, and feel good about the day.
- 38:17Sunset in the mountains, don't miss it.
- 38:20St. Louis, Missouri.
- 38:22In the top of the third inning, the bottom three of the Indians order,
- 38:39Ted Cox, Dwane Kuyper, and Tom Berizer against Steve Comer.
- 38:44Texas now with a 2-0 lead.
- 38:51Steve Comer has retired the first six men in a row.
- 38:58On the scoreboard, Cincinnati has now really done a job on Atlanta again tonight.
- 39:04It is 9-1 with the Braves batting in the fifth inning of play.
- 39:09And Lucas Sepsioan had a grand slammer in that big four-run fifth.
- 39:15Ted Cox, got an 0-4 into the year.
- 39:20Now that can't be. They got him 0-4 into the year and 1-4 last night.
- 39:28Cox, well, his league stats have him 0-4-8 on the year, but he was 1-4 last night.
- 39:34That's right.
- 39:36And in fact, with 2-4-8 coming in, so he is really 3-4-12 on the year.
- 39:40I'm not sure where they got the 0-4-8.
- 39:42Well, the other day they had Cage without having hit two.
- 39:44Here's the pitch to Cox low, ball two.
- 39:51Now I guess the computer doesn't get any spring training.
- 39:55The pitch is hit up in the air down the right field line off the bat of Cox.
- 39:59Putnam back.
- 40:00Wills over. Wills on the run, the bullpen, the ball dropped.
- 40:05Wills called Putnam off the ball, but the ball kept sailing away from him.
- 40:09Putnam actually ended up closer to it than anybody else.
- 40:18So Teddy is 3-4-12 on the year rather than the 0-4-8 that I had given you earlier.
- 40:23The count is 2-1-1.
- 40:36Steve Comery, 11-5 last year.
- 40:45Teddy Cox discovered his bat was broken and had to go back over to get another one.
- 40:50Detroit 1-0 over Kansas City at the end of two innings of play on a walking foot home run.
- 40:56Pittsburgh and Philly are 4-4 with the Phillies batting the sixth inning at Philadelphia.
- 41:01There's a slap up the middle by Cox at his center field.
- 41:04A base hit. Comer put his bare hand up in the air and almost made contact.
- 41:09He ought to be very happy he didn't reach it.
- 41:10That is right.
- 41:11There's a shot up the middle at his center field.
- 41:13That is the first Indian hit of the ball game.
- 41:16And it brings to bat Dwayne Kuyper.
- 41:18Kuyper 4-15 on the season with two RBI's, two for four in last night's ball game.
- 41:26Now Ken Forch will not pitch another no-hitter tonight.
- 41:29Dodgers got him for a pair on the second inning.
- 41:32Yankees 5-2 over Baltimore on the sixth.
- 41:35First pitch, Cox on the go and Kuyper bounced the ball foul back to the screen.
- 41:47Strike one count on the left hand batting.
- 41:49Captain of the Indians, Dwayne Kuyper.
- 41:58Comer looks in working from the stretch for the runner at first base, nobody else.
- 42:02Here's the pitch and Kuyper takes it low and away.
- 42:04One ball, one strike.
- 42:13Comer, the sign from Sundberg.
- 42:20The stretch, a pitch, Kuyper lifts a fly ball behind the shortstop.
- 42:24Norman who'd come in goes back but melts back there and puts the ball right off the end of the glove.
- 42:30But he made the basket catch but the ball was right on the fingertips of his glove and he just hung on.
- 42:40One away, Cox and Forch retreat to first base.
- 42:44Tom Verizon, right hand batting, shortstop, nine on the order.
- 42:48Two for 14 of the year with a run batted in and an 0 for four last night.
- 42:57The stretch and the pitch and Tommy takes outside, ball one.
- 43:02We're at the top of the third and the Texas Rangers have taken a two to nothing lead.
- 43:14Throw over to first base, back to the bag, goes Cox.
- 43:23Stretch and the pitch, Verizon takes low, Sundberg came up ready to throw but Cox retrieves it to the bag.
- 43:37The error in the second inning with both runs against Wilkins in the unearned category.
- 43:46Fine throw by Rick Manning that inning.
- 43:48It's about to consider Rick has not played since last Monday.
- 43:52Stretch and the pitch, Verizon bangs the ball foul over into the third base dugout.
- 43:57Two balls in the strike.
- 44:03Steve Comer wearing a red 11 on the back of his uniform.
- 44:13Cox leads it first, one out, one out.
- 44:17And a throw over to first base, Teddy puts the foot back in the bag in time ahead of the tag by Putnam.
- 44:24August 5th, Comer went an inning in the third, picked up a four to three win.
- 44:27August 13th, he was a six to five winner in four in a third inning against Cleveland.
- 44:31There's a ball off the glove as Sundberg rolls down the third base line.
- 44:34Sundberg quickly on top of it and there's no advance by Cox.
- 44:38Two balls in the strike.
- 44:39When Comer throws that fastball low and inside to the right hand of a low and away to the left hand, it really sinks.
- 44:44The ball just bore right in on him.
- 44:47Throw the hair on deck.
- 44:53A stretch, Comer's three-one, picks to Verizon, Cox goes and the ball is fouled back.
- 44:59Three-two.
- 45:11Booked out of three and two.
- 45:17Verizon keeping an eye on Dave Garcia, the Indians' third base coach.
- 45:27A stretch and the playoff pitch runner goes.
- 45:30Verizon lifts the fly ball into center field.
- 45:33Oliver started back now, he's coming on and makes the running catch.
- 45:36Cox on his way back to first base to throw.
- 45:38That's what it's time, goes to the pitcher backing up as it came through the first base and on the bounce.
- 45:48Two down with Cox safely back at first base.
- 45:53Al Oliver is rapidly becoming a big hero down there.
- 45:56Two home runs last night, didn't hurt him any.
- 45:58And of course he batted 324 last year.
- 46:00He is one of the better hitters in the American League.
- 46:04Toby Harrah, Harrah struck out swinging to start the ball game against Coleman.
- 46:09Over in Salisbury at the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Convention.
- 46:14Here's the pitch and Harrah takes the strike, strike one.
- 46:17The host and hostess, Dr. Charlie and Marnie Steinman.
- 46:23Marnie is a relative of Toby Harrah, they come from Marion High School in Marion, Ohio.
- 46:29Toby says half the town is my relation.
- 46:32He hit it at first base and Putnam had to go around the runner to flag that wild pitch down.
- 46:37He did, Cox at first base.
- 46:44A stretch, strike one, pitch bounces into center.
- 46:50Dr. Steinman is in your category.
- 46:52Herbie turns in five miles a day chugging up and down the streets of Salisbury.
- 46:57Doesn't look a day over 80.
- 46:59One ball, one strike.
- 47:04Throw strikes, throw pitch and a foul fly.
- 47:08First base side, Putnam chasing and lead a ticket.
- 47:11It's in the scene.
- 47:12One ball, two strikes.
- 47:20We're in the top half of the third inning.
- 47:22The Indians put the leadoff man Ted Cox on base with a single to center.
- 47:26The chiper popped up and Verizon flagged a center.
- 47:30And now Toby Harrah trying to keep the inning alive with a one-two count and Rick Manning on deck.
- 47:39Comer's a stretch and then he steps back.
- 47:43Comer works much more slowly with people on base than he does when base is empty.
- 47:47He surely does.
- 47:49A stretch, one, two, pitch and another foul fly that was deeper into the seats on the right side.
- 47:56And the count remains with a ball and two strikes.
- 48:00Comer doesn't like the baseball that he had and he wants another one.
- 48:04The home plate up front.
- 48:07David Clyde I understand released today from Lutheran Medical Center which is good news.
- 48:11We hope he'll be back with us soon.
- 48:13He's a fine young man.
- 48:14We missed seeing him around and he's going to be a good pitcher.
- 48:18One, two to count.
- 48:20Here's the pitch and a bouncing foul right over to the on-deck circle and into the seat.
- 48:24Also good to see Wayne Garland back in an Indian uniform working out.
- 48:28He is eligible to go off to the Sablist on April the 18th.
- 48:31So, Bo Diaz.
- 48:33I think he can get off on the 14th.
- 48:34I'm sorry, yeah, the 14th.
- 48:35The Garland's the 18th and Diaz is the 14th.
- 48:40One ball and two strikes on Toby Harrah.
- 48:43Stretched by Comer.
- 48:44Cox leads the first pitch to Harrah outside, brought up first base and Cox scampers back to the base.
- 48:49Jim Sunberg is a catcher who is not afraid to throw the ball and he throws well.
- 48:58Now there are some catchers who should be afraid to throw.
- 49:00That's right.
- 49:01And they still do.
- 49:02Sunberg is not afraid and throws extremely well.
- 49:05Breaking ball inside, three and two now on Toby Harrah.
- 49:18Comer looks into Sunberg for the sign.
- 49:21A stretch, pitch, swing and a miss.
- 49:24Toby Harrah strikes out for the second time against Comer.
- 49:28The ending is over.
- 49:30No runs and a hit with a man left at the end of two and one half innings of play.
- 49:33It is Texas 2, play of another.
- 49:36When you get your car fixed at Shell Auto Care, you get a lot of things you'd never expect.
- 49:41Not only do you get a written estimate in advance, you get your own parts back to inspect.
- 49:46You get a mechanic who's been certified by Shell or the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
- 49:51And when all is said and done, every repair is backed in writing.
- 49:55So bring your car to Shell.
- 49:58It's everything you never expected car repairs to be.
- 50:29That's a push.
- 50:31The Rangers sample Oliver and Grubb in the third inning.
- 50:59Yankees 5 to 2 over Baltimore on the seventh.
- 51:02Kansas City now 2 to 1 over Detroit on the fourth.
- 51:06Here it is 2 to nothing Texas and we're in the third inning of play.
- 51:09Pitch to Sam O'Lo.
- 51:11Two balls, no strikes.
- 51:16Al Oliver on deck.
- 51:24The pitch, foul ball back over the screen.
- 51:26A simpler end of the sheet.
- 51:27Fortunately you hear an empty chair.
- 51:29I think before we come back next time we'll see that other screen put up again.
- 51:32Somebody's going to get killed back there.
- 51:34Take us some heavy shots back there.
- 51:43Looking for the time by Wilkins.
- 51:46Here comes the 2-1 pitch.
- 51:48High, high foul fly over the first base dugout.
- 51:52Thornton to the railing, no chance, six rows deep.
- 51:57Two balls, two strikes.
- 52:00Wilkins, Thornton, Alexander all in the neighborhood.

- 52:32Folks who sent us the donuts last night are right back at it again tonight.
- 52:35Yes they are.
- 52:36They greeted us outside the ballpark.
- 52:40Mike and Peggy Vansik.
- 52:43Here comes the 3-2 pitch.
- 52:46Low ball for Sam O'Lough that starts the third inning.
- 52:50Second walk given up by Wilkins to Al Oliver.
- 52:56Oliver a strikeout victim to win the first inning of play.
- 53:03All right, Peggy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jemison are opening in of course again tonight.
- 53:09Mike and Peggy Vansik are right here at the ballpark rooting for the Tribe.
- 53:12Throw to first base with Sample back in the back.
- 53:14They're sitting just down below us.
- 53:16He has an Indian cap on and she has a shirt with the Cleveland Indians marked on it.
- 53:23Stretched by Wilkins, the pitch to Oliver wraps it by the mound.
- 53:26Verizon, the shortstop, flips over to Kuyper for their fourth play on Sample but Duane has no chance to relay.
- 53:32Head man is gone.
- 53:33Sample out six to four if you scored shortstop for the second baseman covering.
- 53:37That's the first out of the second inning.
- 53:38Puts Oliver at first base and brings on Johnny Grubb.
- 53:44John bounce to the shortstop for the second inning and then the Rangers want to work the two runs.
- 53:52Rangers with two runs, two hits.
- 53:54The Indians no runs to hit and error.
- 53:59Eric Wilkins looks in for the sign from Gary Alexander.
- 54:04Grubb a left hand batter, Lovell for lumber as Oliver takes the short lead at first and Grubb raps and
- 54:08the long by Wilkins to second one, Ryzer throws back the break for the double play.
- 54:14Eric Wilkins fielding his position very neatly, picks off the one hopper, turns it into a double killing and the inning is over.
- 54:20No runs, no hits, the walk and nobody left.
- 54:23At the end of three, Texas two Cleveland up it.
- 54:26It's a breakthrough in tire technology.
- 54:29Goodyear eliminates the winter tire changeover with T.M.O.
- 54:33The all season steel belted radial.
- 54:35T.M.O. by Goodyear is all the tire you'll ever need all year round.
- 54:39T.M.O. is available at the Farland Brothers on route 3 and 36 just south of Mount Vernon.

- 55:51Here is inning number four with Herb Score.
- 55:53Thank you, Joe. Hi again, everybody. The Indians trailing 2-0.
- 55:56They will have Manning, Barnes and Thornton to see if they can solve the offerings of Steve Comert.
- 56:02So far he has banned two.
- 56:04He's given up just one base hitter single to Ted Cox leading off the third inning.
- 56:08Manning his first time grounded out to Buddy Bell, but he made a good play on him.
- 56:12Left-hand batter, pitch to him.
- 56:14Curve is high, ball on.
- 56:21Comert, all right-handed, throws.
- 56:25Ball outside, ball 2-2, 2-0.
- 56:28Manning backing away, checking with Dave Garcia.
- 56:31As we mentioned earlier, Manning played on last Monday in Tucson, did not play since that time.
- 56:37Right over the outside corner, suffering from strep throat infection.
- 56:42It was a week yesterday, but the Indians came out and took an early workout.
- 56:44They worked out at 2-30 this afternoon, took some extra batting practice.
- 56:472-1 pitch.
- 56:49Line drive, Buddy Bell makes the play.
- 56:52Buddy Bell with a spectacular diving grab, a line shot to his right.

- 58:29Buddy putting on a pretty good show here tonight.
- 58:35Two men down in the fourth inning.
- 58:37And the batter's Andre Thornton.

- 1:00:25Line-by-line, left fielder line, it is serving foul.
- 1:00:29And you can see why they had him play it over that way.
- 1:00:35Into three-quarters in the NBA, Philadelphia 85 and New Jersey 73.
- 1:00:47Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:00:49Andre Thornton steps in.
- 1:00:52That's three infields on the left side of the infield.
- 1:00:55Swing and a miss, make three, took something off.

- 1:01:02He gets his third strike out, he puts the Indians down one, two, three.
- 1:01:06He's now retired six in a row.
- 1:01:08And at the middle of inning number four here in Texas, the Texas Rangers two,

- 1:02:52He has it.
- 1:02:55One gone in the fourth inning.
- 1:02:58Here's Oscar Gamble.
- 1:02:59He was safe on Andre Thornton's error.
- 1:03:01And that sort of opened the doors for the Rangers to pick up a couple of runs.
- 1:03:06And so there was a man out, Buddy was hit by a pitch.
- 1:03:09Gamble the first base off the glove of Thornton, put runners at first and at second,
- 1:03:13and Sunberg walked to load him up.
- 1:03:14A sacrifice fly put in one run.
- 1:03:16The base hit drove in another.
- 1:03:19Inside ball one.
- 1:03:21And it could have been a lot worse.
- 1:03:23After the hit by Norman made it two to nothing,
- 1:03:26Wills lined a single to center field.
- 1:03:28Rick Manning charged in, picked it up, fired to home plate, and he nailed Sunberg.
- 1:03:32Down to low with a fastball, two and O.
- 1:03:35Wilkins with a fastball, a slider, and a forkball.

- 1:04:14Third walk issued by the Indian right-hander, and here is the catcher, Jim Sunberg.
- 1:04:19He threw the base down ball his first time up and then was nailed at home plate
- 1:04:22on the throw by Manning.

- 1:05:50Kuyper called them off.
- 1:05:52Two-minute down and the batter, Pat Putnam.
- 1:05:55He drove a sacrifice flight to right center field his first time up.
- 1:05:58Picked up a run battled in, not an official time at bat.
- 1:06:12Eric Wilkins and the Indians trail 2-0 here in the fourth.
- 1:06:20Eric checks on the runner at first.

- 1:18:35He's tucked down, a ball stale right over the back of his head.
- 1:18:383-0. It might be that Eric is hurrying his pitches because of Wills being on first base and Gary Alexander going out to talk with him.
- 1:18:49And Al Oliver's on deck, so things will not get any better.
- 1:19:04Check to the runner, pitch, outside, ball four.

- 1:20:54One runner's in.
- 1:20:55A round third, racing and holding up is Sample.
- 1:21:00In the second base for the double goes Oliver.
- 1:21:03For that Sample, he came turning into third base.
- 1:21:07Well, Casey was holding him up.
- 1:21:09I think it was going to stop.
- 1:21:11Al Oliver continues to punish Indian pitching.
- 1:21:15He gets a double.
- 1:21:17Another run battled in.
- 1:21:18It's a 3 to nothing game now.
- 1:21:20Still nobody out. Here's Johnny Graf.
- 1:21:25Here comes Jeff Garbois.
- 1:21:26And that will be all for Eric Wilkins.
- 1:21:29So the Indian rookie gets his baptism of fire here in this ballgame.
- 1:21:35Eric Wilkins has been charged with giving up a total of three runs.
- 1:21:44He has been touched for five hits.
- 1:21:49He walked four.
- 1:21:53And he's working out too. He also hit a batter.
- 1:21:56He leaves with two men on as his responsibility.
- 1:21:58Two of the three runs he has surrendered are unearned.
- 1:22:00Don Hood is coming on and we'll be back to tell you about Don after we take this time out.
- 1:22:05Look under Don Hood making his first appearance of the season.
- 1:22:08He's 6'2", 180 pounds from Florence, South Carolina.

- 1:22:36And he picks up for Eric Wilkins.
- 1:22:38Wilkins' record shows four plus innings.
- 1:22:41Three runs, five hits, four walks, and two strikeouts with a hit batter.
- 1:22:45And of course the two men on base is responsibility.
- 1:22:48Don Hood picks up the sack of rosin, places it on the mound just behind the pitching rubber,
- 1:22:53now looks around at the infield to see where they're deployed.
- 1:22:56And we'll be facing Johnny Grubb. Grubb has grounded to the shortstop,
- 1:23:00hit one back to the mound that started a double play.
- 1:23:07Sample at third, Oliver at second, they both have good speed.
- 1:23:13Check to the runners to pitch.
- 1:23:15Outside and low, ball one.
- 1:23:25Lucasi coaching at third.
- 1:23:27Brett Coney coaching on the first base side.
- 1:23:30Lucasi's shouting something out to Oliver at second.
- 1:23:33They have Verizon almost laying behind the bag at second.
- 1:23:37Slider over the outside, corner strike.
- 1:23:39Alexander plumping a throw to third, sample dives back in.

- 1:24:10Buddy Bell on deck, one ball and it strikes the Grubb.
- 1:24:153-0, range is late here in the fifth.
- 1:24:18The Indians trying to keep it from breaking it open.
- 1:24:21Under the second and the third, nobody out.
- 1:24:26The pitch, curve, breaks too low, ball two, strike one.
- 1:24:33Breeze blowing in from right field, not nearly as strong as it was last night.
- 1:24:40Check to the runners.
- 1:24:442-1 pitch, bouncing ball at home plate foul.
- 1:24:49Ball two, strike two.
- 1:24:55Dawn Hood gets the new baseball, rubs it up.
- 1:25:09Dawn takes the sign.
- 1:25:152-2 pitch, fly ball behind the infield, back goes Kiper.
- 1:25:20On comes Bobby Barnes, a tag at third.
- 1:25:22Here's the catch by Bonds, here's the throw, the runner goes back.
- 1:25:28Bobby Barnes firing at home and Sample holds the third.
- 1:25:33One man down and the batter, Buddy Bell.
- 1:25:41Bonds to gamble on deck.
- 1:25:50We'll send along a space ship break as we wait for Buddy to get in the batter.

- 1:26:25The first walk allowed by Hood, fifth for Indian pitching.
- 1:26:30And we'll see John Ellis.
- 1:26:32John pinched it last night, flied out.
- 1:26:37John has only been to bat that one time.
- 1:26:40We'll see what Jeff Torborg does.
- 1:26:41He has two right-handers, Barker and Spillner in the bullpen.
- 1:26:48John Ellis.
- 1:26:51Jeff standing on the lower step of the dugout and here he comes.
- 1:26:55He was waiting for the official announcement.
- 1:27:01And let's see what he wants.
- 1:27:02He wants Dan Spillner.
- 1:27:04That's going to be all for Dawn Hood.
- 1:27:06His work is brief.
- 1:27:09He pitches one-third of an inning.
- 1:27:13He walks one.
- 1:27:14Does not strike anybody out.
- 1:27:16Does not allow a hit.
- 1:27:17And Dan Spillner will be on to see if he can stop the Rangers with the bases loaded.
- 1:27:21One man out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:27:23We'll be back to tell you about Dan as we take this time out.

- 1:28:28Right hander Dan Spilner on here in the fifth inning for the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:28:33Spilner making his second appearance of the year.
- 1:28:35He went two and a third innings of shutout relief against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
- 1:28:40Spilner, 6'1", 190, right field with both San Diego and the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:28:47Spilner to face John Ellis in the fifth with Marker continuing to work in the bullpen.
- 1:28:52John Ellis standing in.
- 1:28:55Right hand batter, slightly closed stand, deep in the batter's box.
- 1:28:58Spilner will work out of the set position.
- 1:29:01Runners on all the bases, the pitch.
- 1:29:03Fast ball is too high, ball on.
- 1:29:11On deck is the catcher Jim Sunberg.
- 1:29:16Rangers three, Indians nothing.
- 1:29:17We are in the fifth.
- 1:29:18The Rangers threatening with the bases loaded and one man out.
- 1:29:22Check swing, did he go around?
- 1:29:23Umpires first base, does he do not?
- 1:29:25The ball is high, 2-0.
- 1:29:28John, a very strong individual able to stop that bat.
- 1:29:38Ellis hitting for the designated hitter, Oscar Gamble.
- 1:29:44Foul ball sliced off to the right out of play.
- 1:29:49For the sake of statistical keeping numbers,
- 1:29:52the appearance by Ellis goes as an appearance by a TH and also as a pinch hitter.
- 1:30:03Two balls and a strike, pitch, inside three and one.
- 1:30:09Now Spilner says I'll try a new baseball.
- 1:30:14Three balls and a strike, Ellis says his looks to the third base coach Frank LaCasey.
- 1:30:26Ellis steps back in.
- 1:30:31Spilner sets, three-one pitch, swing and a miss, three and two.
- 1:30:39First fastball by Spilner.
- 1:30:50Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:30:57High pop, back of the plate, it's going to be out of play and will go to the three-two again.
- 1:31:08And Spilner, in relief of Don Hood who relieved Eric Wilkins earlier this inning.
- 1:31:16Two of the men on base belong to Eric, runner at first, Buddy Bell, belongs to Don Hood.
- 1:31:27Outfield not playing Ellis to pull, they're giving him a lot of room on the left field line.
- 1:31:33Two pitch, by the center field, back goes Manning, that's going to be deep enough to score the run.
- 1:31:39Manning grabs the ball, here comes Sample holding his second as Oliver and it's a four-and-a-half game.
- 1:31:49Johnny Ellis gets the job done, he's the sacrifice wide at center, picks up a run battled in.
- 1:31:56The run will be charged to Eric Wilkins and the batter now will be the catcher, Jim Sundberg.
- 1:32:11Sundberg has walked and he's fouled out to the second baseman down the right field line.
- 1:32:17Right-hand batter, slatter over the outside corner strike.
- 1:32:21That's going to hurt anything from Baltimore for some time. Baltimore batting in the ninth, railing five to two.
- 1:32:27Gossage came in in the ninth and a long time since we had a report.
- 1:32:35One strike pitch, swing and a miss, strike two.
- 1:32:39In Kansas City the Tigers have taken a three-to-two lead over the Kansas City Royals with Kansas City batting in the sixth.
- 1:32:50Two strikes on Jim Sundberg.
- 1:32:53Rangers leading 4-0 here in inning number five.
- 1:32:56Indians have had only one hit in this game, Rangers have five.
- 1:33:05Down too low.
- 1:33:07Baltimore tied the Yankees with three runs in the last half of the ninth inning and they'll go to X-Binning.
- 1:33:16Jim Palmer apparently still in the ballgame.
- 1:33:24Down too low. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:33:27Two men out, two men on for the Texas Rangers.
- 1:33:35Dan Spilner trying to get out of this jam.
- 1:33:41The delivery.
- 1:33:42Down too low.
- 1:33:44Three into a full count and the runners will be going.
- 1:33:51This inning started with Bump Wills getting a base hit, sample walk.
- 1:33:55Oliver doubled on one run.
- 1:33:58That was off Eric Wilkin.
- 1:34:00Grub fly to right off foot and a walk fell intentionally on James Spilner.
- 1:34:04There go the runners.
- 1:34:06Foul ball at home plate.
- 1:34:08Spilner gave up a sacrifice fly to Ellis.
- 1:34:10And now he's 3-2 on Sunberg, runners at first and at second.
- 1:34:21Last report, down the road in Houston.
- 1:34:24It is 3-3, the Dodgers and the Astros with the Houston Astros batting in the fifth.
- 1:34:34The Astros have defeated the Pirates tonight, 5-4.
- 1:34:40Colton over Blylevin.
- 1:34:42Ball three, strike two.
- 1:34:44There they go.
- 1:34:46Ground ball, third base side, Harry charging, bluzzard.
- 1:34:48Hurry's his throw, they get him at first, the side retires.
- 1:34:51In the inning the Rangers pick up a couple of runs, but it could have been a lot worse.
- 1:34:55Two runs on two hits.
- 1:34:58So we know in the air as the Rangers leave a pair.
- 1:35:01They come through five innings here in Texas to score.
- 1:35:04The Texas Rangers for the Cleveland Indians, nothing.
- 1:35:09Nobody's quite like you, you got your own thing to do.
- 1:35:15You like your beer, light as a litch, refreshing like mountain air.
- 1:35:22You like your blue jeans, old-time.
- 1:35:25You like your mountains, older.
- 1:35:29Head for the mountains, the mountains of Bush.
- 1:35:32Reach out and you'll be here.
- 1:35:36Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of Bush beer.
- 1:35:45Head for the mountains, the mountains of Bush.
- 1:35:48Reach out and you'll be here.
- 1:35:52Just reach out and you'll be here in the mountains of Bush beer.
- 1:36:00Don't just reach for your beer, head for the mountains of Bush.
- 1:36:03And as Bush said, it wasn't pleasant.
- 1:36:06Well, the Indians come to bat in inning number six.
- 1:36:15They have only had one hit off this tough right-hander, Steve Comer.
- 1:36:19That was a single by Cox in the third inning.
- 1:36:22And since that time, he has knocked off nine men in a row.
- 1:36:27In five innings, he's faced only one over the minimum.
- 1:36:29He's faced 16 batters, striking out five of them.
- 1:36:33Dwayne Kuyper, Tommy Verizer, and then Toby Harrah.
- 1:36:40Dwayne Kuyper pops up to Buddy Bell his first time.
- 1:36:43Philadelphia 76ers knocked off New Jersey tonight on their first playoff game.
- 1:36:48122 to 114.
- 1:36:50That's the best out of three, isn't it?
- 1:36:51Right.
- 1:36:54The Cleveland League all-time.
- 1:36:57Here's Dwayne Kuyper.
- 1:36:59Houston leads Atlanta at halftime, 57 to 51.
- 1:37:04I was reading in the paper today, Joe, the fellow who was kind of letting buy into the Houston franchise
- 1:37:09says that if he buys it and the deal goes through, he's firing the general manager.
- 1:37:13Right.
- 1:37:15Line drive, right center field, chasing over's Oliver.
- 1:37:18Still going. He reaches out and he grabs.
- 1:37:21Dwayne Kuyper out in a fly ball to center.
- 1:37:27Here's Tommy Verizer.
- 1:37:28That's 10 in a row this right hand has knocked off.
- 1:37:3612,784 the attendance here tonight.
- 1:37:44Here's Tommy Verizer, right hand batter.
- 1:37:47Line drive, left field, back field sample.
- 1:37:49He is there and he has it.
- 1:37:52Well, if it's any consolation, he needs at least hit the ball hard this inning.
- 1:37:56Right, but he hit it hard.
- 1:37:58And Verizer just hit it right on the nose, but all they've had is two outs.
- 1:38:01Here's Tobey Harry.
- 1:38:02He has struck out twice against this right-hander.
- 1:38:06You know, baseball is a funny game.
- 1:38:07No question about it, Joe.
- 1:38:08All the scouting and so forth.
- 1:38:11Here's a young man, Steve Comer, who was not drafted.
- 1:38:14786 plays were drafted that year and he wasn't one of them.
- 1:38:17And here he is in the Major League.
- 1:38:19Last year he was 11-5.
- 1:38:22Got a note, Herb.
- 1:38:23In that New Jersey-Philly game there were seven technical fouls called John Williamson,
- 1:38:27Kevin Lockery, and the New Jersey trainer were all brought out of the game.
- 1:38:32Oh, what a surprise.
- 1:38:34Now that's where things are going bad when they throw the trainer out.
- 1:38:37Charlie Strasser, beware.
- 1:38:40Fastball on outside.
- 1:38:41Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:38:45Maybe things got so bad he decided to get out of there.
- 1:38:48Could be.
- 1:38:502-0.
- 1:38:52Tobey Harry waits.
- 1:38:53Takes it inside.
- 1:38:543-0.
- 1:38:57Comer has not walked about it yet.
- 1:38:59He has struck out fine.
- 1:39:02Harry with a 3-0 count, two outs in the sixth inning.
- 1:39:06Right through the middle.
- 1:39:073-1.
- 1:39:104-0, that's the score and the Rangers have the fourth.
- 1:39:12Two in the second inning, two more in the fifth.
- 1:39:17Ground ball foul over near the Indian dugout, goes into the Indian dugout.
- 1:39:20Indians on the third base side.
- 1:39:22Rangers on the first base side.
- 1:39:23Lucia Cineño just hit a three-run homer and Houston leads the Dodgers 6-3 after five.
- 1:39:29That was at the expense of Don Sutton.
- 1:39:35The Yankees have failed in the tenth, ball of one-hour batting.
- 1:39:39Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:39:41A windup to Tobey Harry.
- 1:39:43Check swing and hits the bat and it's fouled off.
- 1:39:46One bounce came into the glove of Sundberg behind home plate.
- 1:39:49Some fire to John James.
- 1:39:51We'll give home plate a little bit of a dusting.
- 1:39:58Three and two.
- 1:40:02Homer winds it up.
- 1:40:04High ball down the left field line.
- 1:40:06It's going to be fouling the seats out of play.
- 1:40:09Count remains, ball free and strike two.
- 1:40:15Indians have had one hit off the right hand.
- 1:40:17He has retired the last 11.
- 1:40:22He's retired 17 of the 18 minutes base so he has been more than effective.
- 1:40:30Manning the on-deck batter.
- 1:40:33The third ball is too low and the Indians get their first base on balls.
- 1:40:36They break the string at 11.
- 1:40:40There is the first.
- 1:40:41Here's Rick Manning.
- 1:40:42He has grounded out to Buddy Bell, but he made a good play going to his right for that one.
- 1:40:47And then he hit a line shot that looked like it was ticketed for Lisa double.
- 1:40:51And Buddy Bell somehow leaps and backhanded the ball.
- 1:40:55And here comes the manager, Pat Corrales.
- 1:40:59It's pretty tough.
- 1:41:00One guy after getting 11 in a row, you're leading 4-0.
- 1:41:03You manage to come out to talk to you.
- 1:41:05Well, Alexander was a little upset after the quick hook last night.
- 1:41:10Well, Corrales, I heard Corrales interviewed on the radio today and he said he really intended
- 1:41:14Comer to only go about five or six tonight.
- 1:41:16That's all he really hoped for.
- 1:41:17He might be just checking to see if he's strong enough.
- 1:41:19In fact, Corrales, of course, has paid his dues as they say.
- 1:41:22He's been around the Major League a long time.
- 1:41:24Player and coach, very fine young man.
- 1:41:27He's 38 years old and he knows pitching.
- 1:41:33Rick Manning stands in to pitch to him.
- 1:41:35It's up high about one.
- 1:41:36Buddy Bell in on the grass at third.
- 1:41:39He's going to get action on the Texas bullpen.
- 1:41:41Ed Farmer is warming up.
- 1:41:50Check on them under the pitch.
- 1:41:51Swing and a miss.
- 1:41:53Whenever I see Ed Farmer, I picture Rod Carew stealing home in Minnesota.
- 1:41:57I'll never forget that as long as I live.
- 1:42:02Rocky Colavino and I were working TV that summer.
- 1:42:05I was filming in for Harry Jones and Rocky and I sat in the booth that night.
- 1:42:09You were working radio and Rocky called that one.
- 1:42:11I did the same thing.
- 1:42:13I said he's going to steal home and everybody in the ballpark go up with Farmer.
- 1:42:17Pitch is foul back at a play.
- 1:42:19Farmer was going on it and it will be in the seat down below it.
- 1:42:24One ball, two strikes.
- 1:42:37Rick Manning, left-hand batter with a ball, two strike count.
- 1:42:42Colma comes to the plate up too high, two and two.
- 1:42:47The Rangers have been in command.
- 1:42:49They lead 4-0.
- 1:42:52Duman out.
- 1:42:53Harris at first.
- 1:42:58The pitch.
- 1:42:59Line drive, right field.
- 1:43:00Coming on is Johnny Grubb.
- 1:43:01He spears it.
- 1:43:03The Indians hit the ball harder this inning than they have at any other inning.
- 1:43:06This game, three line drives and a walk.
- 1:43:09Plus three of the line drives all caught.
- 1:43:12So in the inning, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:43:15A walk and a man left.
- 1:43:16The Indians have only left two in this game.
- 1:43:18At the middle of the sixth it is Texas four, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:43:22When you get your car fixed at Shell Auto Care, you get something you wouldn't expect.
- 1:43:26A written, limited warranty.
- 1:43:28It guarantees parts and labor for 90 days or 4,000 miles of normal driving, whichever comes first.
- 1:43:34Any problems?
- 1:43:35Bring your car and your warranty back to Shell.
- 1:43:37They'll do the work over or refund every penny you've paid.
- 1:43:40Now seriously, did you expect this?
- 1:43:44It's Shell, everything you never expected car repairs to be.
- 1:43:50Sunset in the mountains.
- 1:43:52The sparkling waters in each stream slowly turning to shining gold.
- 1:43:56The high, craggy peaks quietly glow in the fading light.
- 1:44:00And the stillness falls like a soft, secret snow.
- 1:44:03It's time to sit back, relax, and feel good about the day.
- 1:44:07Sunset in the mountains.
- 1:44:08Don't miss it.
- 1:44:09Push.
- 1:44:11For the mountains of Bush Hill.
- 1:44:15And Heizer Bush, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1:44:24Last half of the sixth inning, Pat Putnam.
- 1:44:27Nelson Norman in the top of the batting on a bump will to face Dan Filner.
- 1:44:32In Baltimore, Joe Mirabella has come on the pitch for the Yankees in the 10th,
- 1:44:36so Baltimore might be stirring something up.
- 1:44:39He relieves rich gossage.
- 1:44:42Pitch to Putnam's a strike at the knees.
- 1:44:44Putnam in the game is one for one with a sacrifice fly.
- 1:44:48And a run batted in, obviously.
- 1:44:52Wind up by the Indian right-hander.
- 1:44:55Slider, breaks low and inside.
- 1:44:57It's a ball and a strike.
- 1:44:59Four runs, five hits.
- 1:45:00No errors for the ranges.
- 1:45:02No runs are hit, and one error for the Indians.
- 1:45:06Two balls to strike.
- 1:45:14Left-hand hitting Pat Putnam.
- 1:45:18Fly ball left center field.
- 1:45:20Manning cruising to his right.
- 1:45:22Teddy Cox is there.
- 1:45:23Ted calls and he has it.
- 1:45:27One man down in the sixth inning for the Rangers.
- 1:45:30And we'll take a look at the shortstop, Nelson Norman.
- 1:45:32He's single home a run in the second inning.
- 1:45:35And he's struck out swinging his neck time-up.
- 1:45:40George Doc Medich now warming up in the bullpen for the Texas Rangers.
- 1:45:50Fast ball strike over the outside corner.
- 1:46:00Down she'll over the curve ball.
- 1:46:02One ball and a strike.
- 1:46:05Nelson Norman right-hanging batter.
- 1:46:06He has a close stance.
- 1:46:08Feet are fairly close together.
- 1:46:11Down below the knees over the plate.
- 1:46:13Ball two and a strike.
- 1:46:20Still no work quickly.
- 1:46:22Ground ball back past the mound coming on his verizon as it fires over to Thornton.
- 1:46:26And two-minute down, 6-3 on that out.
- 1:46:30Two gone in the sixth and here's Bump Will.
- 1:46:33He's had a pretty good night.
- 1:46:34He lined out to the second baseman.
- 1:46:36And since that time he's had two base hits to center field.
- 1:46:42He has scored one run.
- 1:46:46Switch hit about he left-handed.
- 1:46:51Harrop moves in on the grass at third.
- 1:46:55Inside and low ball.
- 1:47:03Wind up by the Indian right-hander.
- 1:47:06Inside and low.
- 1:47:10Break your opponent, call that a strike.
- 1:47:19This one is off the inside part of the plate.
- 1:47:21Two balls and a strike.
- 1:47:22On the bullpen, Ed Farmer, who had sat down, is up and throwing again along with Doc Medich.
- 1:47:30Ground ball down the right side, screaming into the seats along the right field line.
- 1:47:34Baltimore obviously doing something of the tenth because Gossage went into the tenth
- 1:47:39and Mirabella and Tedrow have both come on in the tenth.
- 1:47:43I would say they have something moving.
- 1:47:44Two-two pitch.
- 1:47:47Outside it's three and two.
- 1:47:51On deck, Bill Samples.
- 1:47:56Three-two delivery.
- 1:47:57Bouncy ball first base side.
- 1:47:59Andre knocks it down, picks it up, throws the Spillner covering.
- 1:48:02They get bump wheels and they get the Texas Rangers in the sixth inning.
- 1:48:05No run.
- 1:48:07No hits.
- 1:48:09No areas.
- 1:48:10None left.
- 1:48:11We go to the seventh to score.
- 1:48:13The Texas Rangers four and the Cleveland Indians nothing.
- 1:48:16What's the easiest, most economical way to get the crew to the game? In a van.
- 1:48:21A Dodge van.
- 1:48:22And they're just $46.58 today at Spitzer Dodge.
- 1:48:25Bill Gayhart and Spitzer Dodge are celebrating 75 years in the automobile business
- 1:48:30by giving you what may be their lowest prices ever on Dodge trucks and vans.
- 1:48:34Over $150 to choose from.

- 1:48:39And Dodge vans, only $46.58.
- 1:48:41Come in and see us today at Spitzer Dodge in Columbus.
- 1:48:46It's different.
- 1:48:51It's exciting.
- 1:48:53It's the kind of club that you wish you'd known about sooner.

- 1:49:06To shake your senses and your soul.
- 1:49:08Every Wednesday is ladies night and happy hour lasts all day long.
- 1:49:13Marco Polo, 1605 West Fifth Avenue in Columbus.
- 1:49:17Right across from North Star.
- 1:49:21For the Atlanta Braves, nine to five.
- 1:49:25That story came on on the ninth inning.
- 1:49:27That young man is pitched very well for Cincinnati thus far.
- 1:49:32Facts picked up a save according to this wire report.
- 1:49:36Hume was the winner.
- 1:49:38Monty Bonds with the seventh inning as the Indians try to get something cranked up against Steve Comer who has given up one hit and one walk over the first six innings of play.
- 1:49:50First pitch, Bonds slaps at the third.
- 1:49:53Now the pick up high throw but Cutnam reaches up and grabs it.
- 1:49:56Bonds retired for the third time on a ground ball.
- 1:50:00One away in the seventh and here comes Andre Thorton.
- 1:50:03Andy has bounced to the shortstop and struck out swinging in two previous trips.
- 1:50:15Four to nothing in favor of the Texas Rangers.
- 1:50:19And we're in the top half of the seventh inning.
- 1:50:21Wind up by Comer in the pitch and Thorton wraps the ball foul beyond the third base dugout.
- 1:50:26Strike one.
- 1:50:28Marky Lyle now up in the bullpen along with Ed Farmer.
- 1:50:38Young man reached over the railing and beat the ball boy to the ball with his half swing and a miss by Andy.
- 1:50:45Thorton with strike two.
- 1:50:51We had only 3,000 people tonight in Atlanta to see that game with the Reds.
- 1:51:06A pitch, Thorton swinging a miss on a bad pitch.
- 1:51:09Sunberg drops the ball, picks it up and tagged Andy.
- 1:51:12Two outs in the seventh inning.
- 1:51:14Well in the sixth it really began to look as though the Indians might be breaking through on the right-hander Comer primarily because they were at least hitting the ball hard.
- 1:51:26They were hitting it at people but they were hitting hard.
- 1:51:28But now in the seventh inning Comer has again appeared to be master of the situation and has two quick outs, nobody on.
- 1:51:36And Alexander with the first pitch pops it up foul.
- 1:51:40Sunberg and Putnam getting together, Putnam the first baseman makes the running catch and fouls round onto the warning path in front of the first base dugout and the side is reset.
- 1:51:49So it's making it look easy.
- 1:51:51Three up, three down and at the end of sixth and one half innings to play it's Texas four, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:51:57At Shell Auto Care being good with your hands isn't good enough.
- 1:52:01Their mechanics have to pass tests for brake work, tune-ups, air conditioning and front end work.
- 1:52:06They have to be certified by Shell, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
- 1:52:10You know it's funny, a lot of people don't expect much from mechanics but they're the people who haven't been to Shell Auto Care.
- 1:52:16Come to Shell for answers.
- 1:52:19It's everything you never expected car repairs to be.
- 1:52:24Music
- 1:52:51Dan Reiser Bush, San Luis, Missouri.
- 1:53:01On half of the seventh inning Sample Oliver and Grubb will test the right-hander Dan Spilner.
- 1:53:06We have seen Wilkins, Hood and Spilner for the Indians.
- 1:53:10Defensively for the Tribe, Sorted at first, Kuyper at second, Reiser at short, Toby Herod at third.
- 1:53:16And the left-hand manning in center, Bonsenright, Gary Alexander catching.
- 1:53:21Sample mounts to third of the first inning, walks to the third and walks to the store to the fifth.
- 1:53:28Music
- 1:53:53He even dropped the man, he just stepped to his right and he's got the pop ball.
- 1:53:58Nothing to it.
- 1:54:00Here's Al Oliver with a strike out of Fielder's Choice and a double down the right field line that drove in the run.
- 1:54:05High drive, left center field, the cock to his left makes the catch.
- 1:54:09Two outs to the seventh.
- 1:54:13Spilner has done very well since he had.
- 1:54:16Danny, Danny early in the spring looked like he was really popping the baseball and didn't have good velocity.
- 1:54:23About the last two times out during spring training he really fired.
- 1:54:26And he's going good here again tonight.
- 1:54:27Johnny Grubb, a bouncer to the shortstop, a 1-6 for the double play and a fly ball to right.
- 1:54:32Spilner throws, Grubb takes the strike.
- 1:54:34Strike one.
- 1:54:36Now the tandem in the Texas bullpen now, Sparky Lyle and Doc Medich.
- 1:54:43Strike one pitch. Grubb fouls one back over the screen into the feet below it and the count is strike two.
- 1:54:50On half of the seventh inning, four to nothing, Texas leads.
- 1:54:53Pick up two in the second and two more in the fifth.
- 1:54:58Wind up and the pitch. Grubb checks wing and too far, strike three.
- 1:55:02Oh, Spilner records his first strike out, the third by Indian pitching and the inning is over.
- 1:55:08One, two, three, that's eight in a row, retired by Dan Spilner.
- 1:55:11And at the end of seventh, it is still Texas four, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:55:15How do you pick a good house from the rest? How can you tell if you get what you pay for?
- 1:55:23When you see the house symbol, we're looking at a house with a 10-year protection plan,
- 1:55:27a decade of protection and peace of mind.
- 1:55:29So look for the house symbol. It means you're covered for a long time.
- 1:55:33The homeowners warranty, that's how, that's how.
- 1:55:38Fisher and Son incorporated the area's only Howell Builder,
- 1:55:41exclusively represented by McMahon Real Estate Company.
- 1:55:47What's the easiest, most economical way to get the crew to the game?
- 1:55:50In a van, a Dodge van. And they're just $46.58 today at Spitzer Dodge.
- 1:55:56Bill Gayhart and Spitzer Dodge are celebrating 75 years in the automobile business
- 1:56:01by giving you what may be their lowest prices ever on Dodge trucks and vans.
- 1:56:05Over 150 to choose from. Tough Dodge trucks go $41.83 and Dodge vans only $46.58.
- 1:56:12Come in and see us today at Spitzer Dodge in Columbus.
- 1:56:17Well, Steve Comer, after going seven fine innings, is relieved.
- 1:56:21They're bringing on Sparky Lyle. Joe mentioned a while ago, Comer's not pitched out much recently.
- 1:56:25They don't want to force him, take a chance on doing some damage.
- 1:56:29He has only allowed one hit over the first seven innings, walked one, struck out six.
- 1:56:33He leaves and he can be the pitcher of record on the winning side.
- 1:56:36He can't lose it and on to pitch comes Albert Walters Sparky Lyle.
- 1:56:42Sparky, 6'1", about 195 pounds. He is now 34 years old.
- 1:56:48With the Yankees last year, one-nine and lost three with an earned run average of 3.47.
- 1:56:53He is the only relief pitcher to ever be a Cy Young Award winner.
- 1:56:56He's pitching 680 games in the Major Leagues, all out of the bullpen.
- 1:57:00He will face the Indians here in the eighth.
- 1:57:03And he'll face Jim Norris for openers and feed Jim Low a ball one.
- 1:57:08Last year was the first year that I can recall that Lyle had trouble with the Indians.
- 1:57:12There's a pitch high and it's 2-0. He was 0-1 against the Tribe.
- 1:57:15I don't really remember at any time that he showed that mastery that he had previously.
- 1:57:20He didn't pitch that much either.
- 1:57:22Pitch is a strike to the inside, Saunter. 2-0.
- 1:57:26There have been days in the past when Sparky just walked out there, flipped the glove on him, and it would be all over.
- 1:57:32Here's the 2-1 pitch. Chopped foul back to the base of the screen. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:57:37Since they've been compiling the save statistics back in 1966, he has saved 194 games.
- 1:57:43That's more than any body they're on record.
- 1:57:47Mycomer really did a number tonight. Seven innings of one hit ball.
- 1:57:51Good thinking fastball, good change up, fine slider, and outstanding control. What more do you need?
- 1:57:57Two balls, two strikes. Wind up in the pitch. Norris wraps it in one hop to the mound.
- 1:58:02Grabbed by Lyle, runs toward first, flips the ball over to Putnam, and there's one away in the eighth inning.
- 1:58:09Now this brings up Ted Cox. Cox slapped a single to center field and struck out in two previous trips.
- 1:58:16That's a base hit by Ted Cox, the only hit of Texas pitching tonight.
- 1:58:21Medich continues to work in the full time. Wind up by Lyle on the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:58:28Sparky Lyle will throw that slider any time, any part of the ball game. Doesn't make it even what the count is, what the situation is.
- 1:58:35Strike one pitch inside, one and one.
- 1:58:40The ball goes wide, it doesn't break big, but it's quick and it goes down. It goes into the right-hand batter.
- 1:58:46Wind up by Lyle, the one-one offering to Ted Cox, chops the ball for the shortstop.
- 1:58:50Bell cuts in front of him, body on the run throw, and he's out.
- 1:58:55Buddy Bell has put on a bit of a fielding show here tonight for the Rangers.
- 1:59:01He made a plan, a line drive off the bat of Manning back in the fourth inning that Manning just could not believe.
- 1:59:09Here's Kuiper, a pop-up to the third baseman and a fly ball to the center fielder.
- 1:59:13Zips for two on the night. Texas leading four to nothing. They've out hit the Indians five to one.
- 1:59:19Wind up, Lyle's pitch, a fastball strike at the knees, strike one.
- 1:59:25Putnam at first, Wilford second, Norman at short, Bell in the grass at third, Sample in left, Oliver in center, Grubbin right,
- 1:59:31Sunberg catching, Lyle pitching, strike one to Kuiper, check swing, and checked in time. A check for the third baseman, Jeff Brown,
- 1:59:40and he says he did check in time. One ball, one strike.
- 1:59:47The pitch, again a fastball, again low, two-and-one account.
- 1:59:54Tom Verizer on deck.
- 1:59:58Wind up, two-one pitch, Kuiper lifts the foul fly out of play to the left side. That'll be at the chairs.
- 2:00:05Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:00:09This same Texas Rangers will be in Cleveland for day ball next Tuesday and Wednesday, Tuesday the 17th at 12.05, and Wednesday the 18th at 2.05 p.m.
- 2:00:23The Rangers come back again in early August. That will include a Sunday doubleheader on August the 5th, and we'll be back down here for the three-night games over a weekend in mid-off.
- 2:00:33Wind up with a two-two pitch. Kuiper wraps the bouncer back to Wil. Gets it on the second big hot post. The first, Kuiper's gone.
- 2:00:40And so are the Indians. One, two, three in the eighth. At the end of seven and one-half innings of play, Texas four, Cleveland nothing.
- 2:00:48Hey, listen to this.
- 2:00:53It's new from Daly's. It's the fruit flavored drink, Little Hug.
- 2:00:58A little barrel of fun and flavor. Choose orange, grape, cherry, lemon, lime, or punch. Just look for the little barrel as you store.
- 2:01:07And hey now, save those little barrels to keep stuff in. Stuff like crayons, pencils, buttons, toys, and whatever.
- 2:01:16Give your loves a little hug from Daly's. And say, don't forget Daly's year after year favorite, Daly's Concentrate.
- 2:01:25The regular size bottle makes 26 glasses and comes in eight different flavors.
- 2:01:30The gallon size concentrate makes 104 glasses of delicious drink and comes in seven flavors. Costs only about three cents a glass.
- 2:01:38Thirsty? Quench it with Daly's Concentrate. No sugar needed.
- 2:01:48In the eighth inning against Dan Spillner, Bell, Ellis, and Sunberg.
- 2:01:56And to the both ends for the Indians, Victor Cruz starts to warm up.
- 2:02:00Wind up by Stoner and the pitch to Buddy Bell. Foul ball back up into the second section behind home plate. Strike one.
- 2:02:09Buddy tonight has been hit by a pitch. Scored the first Texas run.
- 2:02:12Glide to center field and was intentionally walked. Takes low. One ball, one strike.
- 2:02:21Buddy, one for five in this series. But he has been bordering on spectacular with his glove. One-one pitch.
- 2:02:28A strike. Knee high outside corner. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:02:37Spillner looks in and gets the sign. Here comes the one-two pitch to Buddy. Low. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:02:48Spillner ranks it up. Two-two pitch to Buddy. D.E. Reich three, knee high.
- 2:02:53Alexander fires that ball down to Toby Herra at third. Buddy Bell walks slowly back to the third base dugout.
- 2:03:01Two strikeouts for Spillner. That's nine in a row. He's falling short.
- 2:03:07John Ellis came on to bat for Oscar Gamble in the D.H. role. Back in the fifth inning of play list with a sacrifice fly ball to center field scoring sample.
- 2:03:17So Ellis comes to bat now for the second time and the first time against Spillner. Followed back to screen strike one.
- 2:03:25Looking ahead to the ninth, Verizon, Herra, and Manning do against Sparky Lyle.
- 2:03:33Wind up in Spillner's pitch. Check swing ball hits the bat. Gips right by the guys gathered at the far end of the third base dugout and up into the seat.
- 2:03:41Strike two. Randy Jones against the Count of Montefiusto tonight in San Francisco.
- 2:03:51Comes the old two pitch to Ellis. Fast ball inside. One and two.
- 2:03:56During spring training, the Count was really firing the baseball.
- 2:04:03Spillner ready. Nod to the sign from Alexander. The one-two pitch to John Ellis is low. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:04:15Victor Cruz throwing on the bullpen for the Indians. The two-two pitch to Johnny Ellis. Lips a fly ball into short right center.
- 2:04:22Kiper back waving the outfielders away. Makes the back pedaling catch to us.
- 2:04:29Jim Sunberg walked and was thrown out on the plate. In the second inning, when a single to center field by Bump Wills set up Sunberg scamper to the plate from second.
- 2:04:40And Manning threw him out. Sunberg then bowled out to Kiper in the fourth inning and bounced to the third baseman in the fifth.
- 2:04:49Comes to bat here with two outs and nobody on in the home half of the eighth. Texas leading four to nothing. Wind up on the pitch.
- 2:04:55Low ball one. Rangers about hit the Indians tonight five to one.
- 2:05:01The only base hit, Ted Cox with a single in the third inning. One-oh pitch. D. E. Reich fastball knee high.
- 2:05:12Last of the eight. Medich has finished his work in the Texas bullpen. One-one pitch. Sunberg takes low. Two and one.
- 2:05:21Pat Putnam on deck. Tomorrow night, Herb and I will be right back here with you. Should be a dandy.
- 2:05:27Wake and Jenkins. Eight thirty-five for the first pitch in Cleveland. Two-one pitch here and Sunberg takes outside. Three and one.
- 2:05:40Home half of the eighth. Wind up with the next pitch. Sunberg pops it up.
- 2:05:46Back goes Hera. Over comes Verizon. The shortstop at the foul line behind third base makes the catch in fairground.
- 2:05:53Sunberg pops to the shortstop to retire the side. Three up, three down. And we're going to the ninth at Arlington.
- 2:06:01The score, Texas four, Cleveland nothing.
- 2:06:05I'm going to scout the America Cup under his fastball. You know there is a four-wheel drive vehicle with the brisk handling of a subcompact car.
- 2:06:16Come on in to McFarland Brothers just south of Mount Vernon on route three and thirty-six and test drive Scout Two.
- 2:06:22Highly maneuverable four-wheel drive. It's got the turning circle of a subcompact car.
- 2:06:27Yet inside Scout Two there's eighty-two cubic feet for cargo. Test drive Scout Two now at McFarland Brothers.
- 2:06:36Aware. Thirty seconds on depression.
- 2:06:39I wonder if I'm depressed.
- 2:06:40Chronically depressed people show many secondary symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, and hyper irritability.
- 2:06:47Depressed people find it hard to hold a job, eat properly, or laugh.
- 2:06:52I guess I'm depressed.

- 2:07:01AWARE, Our Human Concern Project, The Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
- 2:07:06We have a change for the Texas Rangers at first base. Mike Jorgensen comes on to play at first base.
- 2:07:16Baltimore came up with a run in the tenth and beat the Yankees six to five. Stanhouse over Gotthage.
- 2:07:23Stanhouse came on in the tenth inning of play.
- 2:07:28Rick Dempsey has the game one car behind that one.
- 2:07:34Getting his former teammates.
- 2:07:38Well here's the ninth. Mariser 0 for 2 with a fly ball to center and a line drive to left takes the first pitch for a strike from Sparky Lyle, strike one.
- 2:07:46Fine job of work by the Indian right-handed Dan Spillner. He worked three and two-thirds innings.
- 2:07:53He retired. Everybody's he faced.
- 2:07:58Marked off 11 men in a row.
- 2:08:00Two strikes to count.
- 2:08:05And then batter. Wind up by Lyle. Here's the 0-2 pitch. Check swing. Ball foul over to the Bat Boy.
- 2:08:18Lyle goes up behind the mound.
- 2:08:26Turns his attention to home plate. Wines up and throws and Mariser chops another foul over to the third base dugout. The count remains at 0-2.
- 2:08:42Wind up by Sparky Lyle. Now the pitch. Mariser bangs the ball back to Nelson Norman who picks it up and throws him out.
- 2:08:50Nelson Norman may be a fine young ball player but it seems to me he'd take a long time getting rid of the baseball. He's got a lot of close plays at first base where you wouldn't normally think they should be so close.
- 2:08:59Right. Toby Herra struck out twice and lost once.
- 2:09:05He walked in the sixth and ended a spring of 11 in a row retired by Steve Comer the starter.
- 2:09:12To say that Steve Comer was impressive is putting him mildly. A one hitter over seven innings. First pitch is a strike to Toby Herra. Strike one.
- 2:09:22Seven innings. Comer faced only 23 batters giving up one hit and one walk.
- 2:09:27Wind up. Strike one pitch. Herra pops it foul. That one should make the seat behind the first base dugout and it does with Jorgensen and Sundberg coming over.
- 2:09:50We're in the ninth. The Indians very rapidly running out of time. Trailing. Fort O'Nuffington.
- 2:10:03Toby Herra ready. Lightly closed right hand stance. Lyle wheels and deals and Herra chops the ball foul over in front of the third base dugout.
- 2:10:11That boy over there getting a lot of business. End of three. Atlanta has battled back to take an 89-85 lead at Houston in the NBA.
- 2:10:21Breaking ball high. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:10:30And the one-two pitch. Herra fouls another one out of play to the right.
- 2:10:35Down in the Astrodome tonight, Houston leads Los Angeles 6-3 batting in the eighth.
- 2:10:47Wind up on the pitch and Toby Herra wraps one down the third base line to Buddy Bell. The long throw in time.
- 2:10:54There are two outs in the ninth inning of play.
- 2:10:59And this will bring up Rick Manning. Manning has bounced a third and been robbed of a hit on a great diving grab by Buddy Bell.
- 2:11:07And then a line to the right fielder of the sixth inning of play.
- 2:11:19Left-hander Sparky Lyle against the left-hand batting. Rick Manning, first pitch. Rick takes the low ball one.
- 2:11:31Next delivery and Manning takes a strike at the knees. One ball, one strike.
- 2:11:37Two outs and nobody on in the ninth.
- 2:11:40A one-one pitch. Manning chops the ball foul into the first base dugout. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:11:52Lyle waiting now for another baseball on our tenth inning show.
- 2:11:56Coming up, her score will be chatting to a man in the know, Dick Butler, the supervisor of umpires.

- 2:14:27For tonight's ball game and the Texas Rangers wipe out the Indians, the Ranger pitching staff has now put together 23 consecutive scoreless innings.
- 2:14:39And the Indians have been unable to score in the last 21 innings.
- 2:14:44Tomorrow night, hopefully those statistics can be altered. I'll tell you more about that a little bit later.
- 2:14:52Here's the way it went tonight. For the Texas Rangers, four runs, five hits, no errors, they left six.
- 2:14:59For the Cleveland Indians, no runs, just one base hit. A Tedcock single in the third inning, the Tribe stranded six.
- 2:15:08Starter and loser for the Cleveland Indians in his major league debut, Eric Wilkins, 0-1.
- 2:15:14Of the four runs, Wilkins surrendered, two of them unearned.
- 2:15:18And the winning pitcher, Steve Comer, who pitched the one-hit ball over the first seven innings.
- 2:15:24Marky Lowe came on to finish it up. He will not receive credit for a save in as much as he went only the two innings.
- 2:15:33But he did put together a fine performance in relief, a typical Marky Lowe show.
- 2:15:39So the Rangers have now won three in a row at the outset of the season, and the Indians have gone to one and four.
- 2:15:46I'll tell you how the runs scored right after we take this time out.
