- 0:00Hey everybody. OK, so I've got a question for
- 0:02you. If you're the betraying partner,
- 0:04have you been frustrated with the fact that you know that
- 0:08you're doing some things the right way?
- 0:09Like you're like my partner's been requesting me to do
- 0:12something specifically saying, hey, this would be helpful in
- 0:16recovery, or I need you to do this different, or just whatever
- 0:19type of request that exists. And you're like, I'm getting
- 0:22this right and she just can't see it.
- 0:24Why can't she see the things that I'm getting right?
- 0:27Let's talk about that a little bit today because we got Alana
- 0:29joining us. And this is a bonus episode.
- 0:30By the way, welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 0:36I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 0:39in the space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 0:41diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 0:45authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 0:48about a single action or a moment.
- 0:50It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 0:53a rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 0:56So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 0:59regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes
- 1:02beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:04change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:08your authentic self. Because when you dare to show up
- 1:10fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:13So welcome to be on the facade. Let's get started.
- 1:17So Alana, I want to share something with you that I wanted
- 1:21you to weigh in on. Not share it with you, but weigh
- 1:23in on the subject because it's been hitting for a few guys.
- 1:27This thought, which is why has my partner been requesting me to
- 1:32do something differently. They would create some safety,
- 1:36but she's not really acknowledging that I'm doing it
- 1:39and I can actually have proof and she still can't see it.
- 1:43I wanted to throw this through the lens of seeking safety and
- 1:48also what betrayal trauma produces, which is a in a very
- 1:53appropriate way to look for danger.
- 1:56And I'll compare this to going on a hike.
- 1:58So if I'm going, if I decide me and you are going to go on a
- 2:02hike, you and the listener and we're headed up through the
- 2:04mountains and we're observing the beauty of the hike.
- 2:08Like we could see the scenery, we can see the mountains, the
- 2:10flowers just looks really good and we're just able to see it.
- 2:15And all the sudden as we're going along the way, what could
- 2:17what we come across is a Mountain Lion.
- 2:19Mountain lions show up here in Utah, by the way.
- 2:21So this is not all the time, but it happens because they're here.
- 2:26And if you've ever seen a Mountain Lion before up close,
- 2:30they look very powerful, extremely powerful.
- 2:33You can see all their muscles, especially if they're crouching,
- 2:36if they're about to attack, pray.
- 2:37It's a pretty intimidating experience like any any wild
- 2:41animal wood. And you can kind of imagine that
- 2:45if you were in that situation, if you survive, you surviving
- 2:49it. The end of being OK, you headed
- 2:53back down the mountain. You wouldn't see the same stuff.
- 2:55You would probably recognize that heading back down the
- 2:57mountain, all those things you saw in the beginning, how pretty
- 2:59the mountainside is, the birds that were chirping, just the
- 3:02flowers, all that kind of stuff. Not going to be visible.
- 3:05You're not going to be able to see it because you're going to
- 3:07be wondering where that lion is. You're going to be wondering,
- 3:10will I survive? You'll be scared all the way
- 3:12down. And I think about the men that I
- 3:16work around and and myself of like, why can't she see the
- 3:20things that are going well and just recognize her brains job
- 3:25right now is to sense for danger is to sense like where is the
- 3:29danger? Where is it coming from that
- 3:31what is going to happen next and how appropriate that is.
- 3:34So anyway, a thoughts on the Solana?
- 3:37Yeah, that's a great analogy. I haven't heard that.
- 3:40And I am like, when I go on hikes, I'm like, oh, look at
- 3:43that little wildflower and look at the butterfly.
- 3:46And that is totally me. And yeah, if I saw up close a
- 3:50wild animal and then I didn't see where it went, I didn't know
- 3:54where the danger was. If it could pop out again, I
- 3:59would not be in that like airy light seeing all of the good
- 4:04place. I would be absolutely scanning
- 4:07constantly. So great analogy.
- 4:11And yeah, when AB trade partner goes through betrayal, their
- 4:15brain constantly is scanning for am I safe?
- 4:18Am I safe, Am I safe? And sometimes when we use those
- 4:22words, that partner who is seeking recovery or the partner
- 4:27who's acted out of their values, that partner almost will equate
- 4:33this, am I safe to like a physical safety?
- 4:36And they're like, yeah, you're safe.
- 4:37I'm not. I'm not going to like a beat you
- 4:40up and I'm not going to emote or I'm not going to physically hurt
- 4:44you. So why are you saying safety?
- 4:47And it's talking about an emotional safety.
- 4:50Am I emotionally safe with you? That's the part the brain is
- 4:54constantly assessing for. Are you going to hurt me again?
- 4:58Because one of the number one fears I see AB trade partners is
- 5:02feeling pain again. They go, I can never feel this
- 5:05level of pain again. I wouldn't wish this pain on my
- 5:07worst enemy. And so everything gets tainted
- 5:11through that lens of questioning, am I safe?
- 5:14Yeah, and that person, we would never expect somebody that went
- 5:17back down the mountain after seeing a Mountain Lion to go.
- 5:19Why can't you see the scenery? Why can't you notice how
- 5:22beautiful it is around here? I can't notice the good things
- 5:24when we know like, yeah, that's not what I'm going to be focused
- 5:27on. Trying to get that person to see
- 5:29that and notice that is not very kind.
- 5:33Well, and a betrayed brain who's listening to this probably is
- 5:36going to go, yeah, But it wasn't a wild animal.
- 5:40It was the one person that I thought I could trust.
- 5:42It was the person that I was trusting.
- 5:45When I turned my back, they stabbed me in the.
- 5:48Back. Thanks.
- 5:50And they left me bleeding. That's the person I have to walk
- 5:53back down the mountain with, and then you want me just to be
- 5:58holding your hand and skipping and being everything is OK you.
- 6:01Want me to enjoy the hike? Yeah, so not only am I scared
- 6:06that it's going to happen again, and I'm scared of what the
- 6:09future holds, but I'm injured, I'm hurt, and you are the person
- 6:14that I thought I could trust. So it goes a lot deeper.
- 6:18Something else kind of outside of this analogy on where my
- 6:21brain went is I will see a lot of times the person who has
- 6:27betrayed looking for some kind of outcome, they're looking for
- 6:32a instant results. If I do this and they respond in
- 6:37this way, then we're good. But if I do this and they don't
- 6:40respond positively, then that was bad.
- 6:43And so those that instant result seeking can get you really in
- 6:49trouble because AB trade partner is not going to instantly be OK,
- 6:53is not going to instantly see the good, is not going to
- 6:57instantly have trust back. That has to be rebuilt.
- 7:01It's not restored. It has to be rebuilt over time.
- 7:05So that's one area where I see problems.
- 7:07And then the other problem that I see is the person who's acted
- 7:12out a lot of times is seeking validation or credit for the
- 7:17good. And that energy of I am doing
- 7:22this, therefore I would like you to validate me or I am doing
- 7:26this and I want credit for it. You are taking from the other
- 7:29person energetically. And so that energy, it's now
- 7:34you've shifted it from I am living my life and I'm just
- 7:38doing these things because they're value based and that's
- 7:40who I am to. I am doing these things.
- 7:44And now I need you to respond to react in this way.
- 7:47And that energy is, it's funny because I want to say like a
- 7:50dirty energy, like a darker energy, it's an energy that's
- 7:55taking instead of giving. And so even that around, it
- 8:01makes it harder for the B trade partner to lean in to feeling
- 8:06trust in that, in those behaviors and trust that those
- 8:10are moving forward out of pure intentions and true growth and
- 8:13healing versus just trying to manipulate your partner's
- 8:17feelings or to fix the outcome or fix them versus true change
- 8:23happening. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:25And usually it's done. We talked about a window of
- 8:29tolerance. Usually it's done when a person
- 8:31has a low gas tank, like low energy, like not much fuel in
- 8:34their tank. And then they have their partner
- 8:37and they really need that validation.
- 8:39So they have a hard time and they're seeking that energy from
- 8:42somebody else because they can't get it with friend with inside
- 8:45themselves. OK, Anyway, just want to share
- 8:48this analogy with you. I know this is a bonus episode.
- 8:50And the purpose of this was why, why can't they recognize the
- 8:54good? Why can't they see the other
- 8:55pieces of it? And so can I give a piece of
- 8:58advice? Yeah.
- 9:00And usually when I give advice, I like to start by saying, hey,
- 9:02this is your advice, But my advice is really keep doing the
- 9:09good that you're doing in your recovery work because that's
- 9:12part of your values. Keep doing those actions and be
- 9:16consistent with them and let go of the outcome.
- 9:19And as you shift your energy around it, and as you give
- 9:23compassion and empathy for your partner to be wherever they need
- 9:26to be coming down that mountain, as you do that and you stay
- 9:30consistent, that's how the trust is built back over time.
- 9:35Yeah, Thank you for saying that. All right, everybody, It was
- 9:37good to spend time with you. Talk to you next time.
