- 0:08Speaker 1: It's a confusing old month, October. It's the 10th month
- 0:11Speaker 1: of the year, 31 days, but its name comes from octo,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Latin word for eight. It's also school holidays and
- 0:17Speaker 1: the only month that Shakespeare never mentioned in any of
- 0:20Speaker 1: his poems or plays, and for.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Most of us, the start of daylight savings.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And if, like me, you're finding the first few days
- 0:26Speaker 1: of daylight savings a confusing time of lying awake in
- 0:29Speaker 1: the wee hours of the morning trying to remember whether
- 0:31Speaker 1: you've actually changed that clock or not, spare a thought
- 0:35Speaker 1: for the good citizens of Rome in 1582 when Pope
- 0:38Speaker 1: Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar and skipped 10 days
- 0:42Speaker 1: in October to fix calendar drift, meaning people went to
- 0:44Speaker 1: sleep on October 4th and woke up on October 15th.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Today, though.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Whatever day you're listening to No Dribble is, of course, today.
- 0:53Speaker 1: So of that, we can be sure you're on No Dribble.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Strap in!
- 0:55Speaker 4: No Dribble.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We don't know what time it is and we can't
- 1:14Speaker 1: go and visit Liz because she lives too close to
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Queensland border and it becomes very.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Confusing for us. We talk about netball so much more.
- 1:21Speaker 2: My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I am Kath Cox and it does get tricky for you,
- 1:24Speaker 3: doesn't it?
- 1:25Speaker 5: Yes, and I am Liz Ellis and it's tricky because
- 1:28Speaker 5: I often fly out of the Gold Coast when I fly,
- 1:31Speaker 5: which means that I spend half of my time laying
- 1:34Speaker 5: awake in the wee hours of the morning going, am
- 1:36Speaker 5: I going to be an hour early and am I
- 1:38Speaker 5: going to be an hour late? Am I going to
- 1:39Speaker 5: miss a flight? Am I going to have to sit
- 1:41Speaker 5: around in Virgin Lounge and twiddle my thumbs because I'm early? Anyway,
- 1:45Speaker 5: there is one thing that I must pull you up on, Karen.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Not pull you up on, but I want to add.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Please.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I want to add to your October.
- 1:51Speaker 2: My Oktoberfest.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Your Oktoberfest. I think that October is actually named after Octavius.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Yes, yes, Gaius Octavius. Do you know who Gaius Octavius was?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Tell me.
- 2:04Speaker 5: He was a grandnephew, great-grandnephew.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Did he win the first series of The Voice?
- 2:09Speaker 5: Close. Close. I think he was the original I'm a celebrity,
- 2:15Speaker 5: get me out of here, frankly. No, he was the
- 2:18Speaker 5: great-nephew of Julius Caesar and became Augustus, which is why
- 2:21Speaker 5: we have August and we have Octavius. October for Octavius
- 2:26Speaker 5: and July. So all these Romans. So, you know, we
- 2:29Speaker 5: talk about netball but so much more. My other passion
- 2:31Speaker 5: other than netball is Roman political history. So I love
- 2:34Speaker 5: a little bit of Roman political history in my netball
- 2:37Speaker 5: podcast and Catherine's eyes are glazing over again.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Wow.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Yes. I know.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Talk about educational.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Like when I took Catherine to Pompeii, she spent a
- 2:48Speaker 5: lot of time with her eyes.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It's another rock. Elizabeth, that rock looks the same as
- 2:53Speaker 3: that rock.
- 2:54Speaker 5: No, that rock is where, you know, we think the
- 2:57Speaker 5: prostitute's house was in Pompeii and then her ears picked up.
- 3:01Speaker 2: She was like, what?
- 3:02Speaker 3: She does know how to get my attention. It's those
- 3:05Speaker 3: sorts of stories.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I don't know why you bothered to have your own
- 3:08Speaker 1: children though, Liz. You didn't need to create teenagers, sullen
- 3:11Speaker 1: teenagers to drag around.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Have you seen that? I love that thing on social media.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I love taking my kids on holidays to have them
- 3:21Speaker 1: eat chicken nuggets and be ungrateful in other expensive parts
- 3:25Speaker 1: of the world.
- 3:25Speaker 5: It's fantastic. Oh, well, the time we took Catherine to
- 3:27Speaker 5: the White House and we went into the Senate to
- 3:32Speaker 5: listen to some debating and she was just like, When
- 3:35Speaker 5: can we go to the bar? When can we go
- 3:36Speaker 5: to the bar? So it's like– so with kids you
- 3:38Speaker 5: take them to eat chicken nuggets and be ungrateful in
- 3:41Speaker 5: expensive locations, but we've taken Catherine to drink all sorts
- 3:45Speaker 5: of wine and be ungrateful and not understand the history
- 3:48Speaker 5: in expensive locations.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But I do love that I've been to them and
- 3:51Speaker 3: I wouldn't have otherwise, so it is nice to be
- 3:53Speaker 3: able to– no, I've been there.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Very good.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I've walked around there.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I've done that.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yep, I have.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Nice to be able to say.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Against my will, 100%, but I have been there.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Ah.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Did I tell you guys about when I did my
- 4:04Speaker 1: beginner's Broadway jazz class in Times Square?
- 4:07Speaker 4: No.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So I went over.
- 4:09Speaker 3: You are the onion with all the layers.
- 4:12Speaker 5: It was so fun.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So I went over with my mate Larry and we
- 4:16Speaker 1: were turning 40 and we went to my husband who
- 4:21Speaker 1: was a saint. My son was about 18 months old
- 4:23Speaker 1: and my friend was going over.
- 4:24Speaker 2: For her 40th by herself.
- 4:25Speaker 1: She'd just got a divorce and he said she shouldn't
- 4:27Speaker 1: go by herself and I went over I know. So
- 4:30Speaker 1: we went over and had 10 days in New York
- 4:32Speaker 1: and it was fabulous. And one, we got to choose
- 4:35Speaker 1: activities to do and she didn't want to do the dancing.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I said, it's beginners. What, you know, how hard
- 4:43Speaker 1: is it going to be? So we went to this
- 4:45Speaker 1: dance studio just off Times Square there and went in
- 4:50Speaker 1: and we were a bit nervous.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Both of us were a bit nervous.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And so we went in to check in and I
- 4:55Speaker 1: said to her, why don't we just go and have
- 4:57Speaker 1: a shot first? Let's go and loosen up. It's beginners,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know, whatever, we'll be fine, but let's just go
- 5:02Speaker 1: and have a drink. It was sort of six o'clock
- 5:04Speaker 1: or whatever. So we checked in and then I said
- 5:06Speaker 1: to them, oh, can you tell us where the nearest
- 5:08Speaker 1: bar is? And they said, oh, well, yeah, it's down
- 5:09Speaker 1: the end of the corridor. It's like, oh, this is
- 5:12Speaker 1: very civilised, the dance studio with a bar. So we
- 5:16Speaker 1: went wandering down there. They meant ballet bar. This empty
- 5:21Speaker 1: studio full of mirrors.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It's like, this is the last thing we want.
- 5:24Speaker 1: We went downstairs, found a dodgy bar, came back, did
- 5:27Speaker 1: the class and it was full of professional dancers who were-
- 5:31Speaker 1: Doing a beginner's class? Yeah, but they were trained in
- 5:34Speaker 1: other things. So not in Broadway jazz. So it was
- 5:38Speaker 1: the two of us were the beginners. Everyone else was
- 5:42Speaker 1: like a really good dancer in some other discipline. Anyway,
- 5:47Speaker 1: as these things always are, it was excruciating for about
- 5:50Speaker 1: five minutes and then.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Super fun after that.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I'm picturing a lot of these ones.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Did you get your spirit fingers out?
- 5:57Speaker 2: It was very fun.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But, you know, so a bar in the dance world
- 6:01Speaker 1: is not always the same. So remember that if they
- 6:03Speaker 1: take you to see the ballet, Catherine.
- 6:05Speaker 3: No, Liz did take me when we were in New
- 6:07Speaker 3: York to the Saturday Night Live event.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Oh, cool.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Was it not?
- 6:13Speaker 5: No, it was Letterman.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Letterman.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Sorry, apologies. And we got to go into the audio
- 6:17Speaker 3: booth and watch the show from there. And then when
- 6:20Speaker 3: everybody cleared out, we got to go and sit in
- 6:22Speaker 3: his chair at the desk.
- 6:24Speaker 5: That's outstanding.
- 6:25Speaker 3: It was so good.
- 6:26Speaker 5: It was very cool. We knew the guy who was,
- 6:28Speaker 5: I mean, he's a superstar sort of sound mixer. He's
- 6:31Speaker 5: the mixer for Letterman. Yeah. We went and sat with
- 6:34Speaker 5: him while the show was happening. And it was remarkable
- 6:37Speaker 5: because when, you know, Catherine does a netball or I
- 6:41Speaker 5: work on a television show, as you would know also, Carolyn,
- 6:44Speaker 5: you get a rundown, right? And so in the netball,
- 6:46Speaker 5: the rundown's maybe five pages, do you reckon, for a
- 6:49Speaker 5: couple of hours worth of television, sometimes sort of eight
- 6:51Speaker 5: or nine. The Letterman rundown for one show was like
- 6:54Speaker 5: 50 pages. It was a book.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Wow, yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 5: And we were just blown away. It was amazing. So
- 6:58Speaker 5: it was so good. And then, yeah, we've got all
- 7:00Speaker 5: these photos of Catherine and me and the meat tray
- 7:02Speaker 5: sitting in David Letterman's chair.
- 7:05Speaker 2: That's great.
- 7:06Speaker 3: So good. So that's the sort of stuff I'm on
- 7:08Speaker 3: board for, not so much Congress.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Oh, come on. You went to the White House, not Congress.
- 7:14Speaker 5: But, you know, as I'm sitting here thinking about, like,
- 7:17Speaker 5: me talking about Octavius and October named after Octavius, actually
- 7:20Speaker 5: I think you might be right, Carolyn, because September, October, November,
- 7:24Speaker 5: December are Latin for Italian or Latin for 8, 9, 10, 7, 8, 9, 10.
- 7:30Speaker 5: That's right. Is it 7, 8, 9, 10?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Scepter, Octa, Nona, Deca.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 5: And then the Gregorian calendar put in two more months
- 7:36Speaker 5: and it was July and August for Julius and Augustus.
- 7:39Speaker 5: So anyway, I'm glad we've cleared that up because I
- 7:41Speaker 5: know that would have bothered Catherine. It would have kept
- 7:43Speaker 5: her awake till all hours.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Well, dribblers around the world were itching, thinking, hang on, wait,
- 7:48Speaker 1: is this correct?
- 7:50Speaker 3: October is also the month that I folded. So I
- 7:55Speaker 3: allowed the dog over.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Oh, I see. I thought you meant you finally dealt
- 8:00Speaker 2: with the laundry room.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Oh, no, no.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I fold on the daily. I'm quite the folder normally,
- 8:05Speaker 3: but I did fold. I hadn't seen Harper for a
- 8:08Speaker 3: week and she texted me last week when I was
- 8:10Speaker 3: away and said, can Alfie come and stay at our house?
- 8:14Speaker 3: Alfie's her boyfriend? Alfie's the DOG. I said, sure, and
- 8:20Speaker 3: she rang me straight away and she's like, really? Because
- 8:22Speaker 3: I lasted a year. The dog's a year old next week.
- 8:25Speaker 5: I am surprised that you lasted this long, but you
- 8:27Speaker 5: do realise that Alfie is the gateway drug. One minute
- 8:29Speaker 5: it's Alfie, the next minute it's the boyfriend.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm actually in love with Alfie. So I think
- 8:35Speaker 3: that this might be a bit problematic going forward. I
- 8:38Speaker 3: firstly was like not on the bed, not allowed on
- 8:40Speaker 3: the bed. Suddenly he's on my pillow this morning kissing
- 8:42Speaker 3: my face. I was like, oh, he's so cute.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But, Catherine, it's perfect. You can have a part-time dog.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, I know.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It is perfect. Like don't buy your own dog.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Oh, I'm not going to. I can't. No, I can't
- 8:53Speaker 3: buy a dog.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You held out much longer than I did. You said,
- 8:57Speaker 1: can I bring Alfie over? Yes, yes, bring the dog over.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So he's here now.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Oh, we should get Alfie to come in and make
- 9:04Speaker 5: a little appearance.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He's very cute. We'll just leave them be.
- 9:07Speaker 5: So, Catherine, you lasted a year. I'm very surprised that
- 9:10Speaker 5: you lasted a year. Is Alfie fully house trained? How
- 9:14Speaker 5: does he go in your apartment?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Well, I'm a little bit paranoid about that for obvious reasons.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So almost hourly I'm like, Harper, take him down to
- 9:21Speaker 3: the toilet. Take him down to the toilet. He did
- 9:24Speaker 3: do a poo the other day, but he was good
- 9:26Speaker 3: enough to do it on the floorboards for me. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 3: we hadn't taken him out, so I couldn't growl at him.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So just remember, everyone, if you go over to Catherine's place,
- 9:33Speaker 1: make sure you do the poo on the floorboards, please.
- 9:36Speaker 2: That's what she prefers.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Not on the white mat would be appreciated. Thanks, team. Yeah, no,
- 9:41Speaker 3: so he's good. He's going back tomorrow, though, and I'm
- 9:44Speaker 3: looking forward to that also. Hey, speaking of dilemmas, I've
- 9:47Speaker 3: got one for you guys. And I need to know
- 9:50Speaker 3: what you would have done in this situation because I
- 9:53Speaker 3: really struggled with the way to behave and I left
- 9:58Speaker 3: and I was pissed.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:00Speaker 3: So I don't feel like I could have done anything else. Anyway,
- 10:03Speaker 3: so I've set the scene. I have a normal hairdresser.
- 10:07Speaker 3: She couldn't fit me in. I need an emergency do done.
- 10:09Speaker 3: She couldn't fit me in. So I knew of another
- 10:12Speaker 3: lady who's also friends with friends. So we haven't officially met,
- 10:18Speaker 3: but she knows who I am. I know who she is.
- 10:21Speaker 3: We've got mutual friends. So I booked in for a
- 10:24Speaker 3: half head of foils, right? That's all I wanted. I
- 10:27Speaker 3: didn't have time for anything else. I didn't need a
- 10:29Speaker 3: full head of foils because I just had it done.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I didn't want to pay for a full head of foils,
- 10:33Speaker 3: most importantly. Anyway, so I'm sitting there in the chair.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Next minute, I notice I've got foils all the way
- 10:40Speaker 3: down the back of my neck. And I thought, oh,
- 10:43Speaker 3: maybe she just does them differently. I won't say anything.
- 10:45Speaker 3: And then she says, so I'm doing a full head
- 10:47Speaker 3: of I said, oh, why? Oh, because you need it.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I know.
- 10:54Speaker 5: I know, right?
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah. But in my head I'm thinking people know people
- 11:00Speaker 3: and this lady knows people I know. I can't be
- 11:03Speaker 3: an ass when all I want to do is say,
- 11:05Speaker 3: are you fucking serious? I didn't ask for this. Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I don't think I'm paying for this.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Well, I don't.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Think standing up for yourself is being an arse necessarily.
- 11:12Speaker 3: No, but I did say, oh, I didn't ask for that.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I only want a half head. And I said, I
- 11:18Speaker 3: don't have time. I don't need one. She goes, no,
- 11:20Speaker 3: you do need one. And I thought, okay, given we've
- 11:23Speaker 3: got mutual friends, I'll see how this plays out. Maybe
- 11:26Speaker 3: she's just doing this as a nice thing and she's
- 11:28Speaker 3: only still going to charge me for a half head
- 11:29Speaker 3: of foils later on.
- 11:30Speaker 5: No.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Charge me a full head of foils.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Oh, no. Okay.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And the whole time was like, so next time when
- 11:36Speaker 3: you come in, next time, next time. And in my
- 11:38Speaker 3: head I'm thinking I am never, ever coming back again.
- 11:42Speaker 1: So do you know how I would have handled it?
- 11:44Speaker 1: I would have said nothing and then gone on Australia's
- 11:48Speaker 1: highest ranking women's sport podcast and talked about it.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I think so too. I think so too.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a really tough one because of those other
- 11:58Speaker 1: relationships and things.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Yeah, that is so hard.
- 12:01Speaker 2: But it's off what she did. She shouldn't be making that.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Even if she thought you needed a full head of foils,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that is her time to say, I think you need
- 12:10Speaker 1: a full head of foils. And you would go, look,
- 12:12Speaker 1: maybe you're right, but I don't have time at the moment,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you know.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I'll come back next time. So like two things. One
- 12:20Speaker 5: is that you will vote with your feet, right? You'll
- 12:22Speaker 5: never go back to see her again.
- 12:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Two is that all your friends who listen to this
- 12:25Speaker 5: podcast will know that she's ripped you off.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Well, they don't know who it is. So I would
- 12:30Speaker 3: never come on and, you know.
- 12:31Speaker 2: No, no.
- 12:32Speaker 5: But the people who know her and know you are
- 12:34Speaker 5: going to draw the dots. But thirdly, in the moment,
- 12:39Speaker 5: I reckon it's really hard. And I've been reading a
- 12:41Speaker 5: lot about this in relation to some of the issues,
- 12:46Speaker 5: societal issues that are happening at the moment about how
- 12:48Speaker 5: women are trained to be polite and to not make
- 12:51Speaker 5: people feel uncomfortable. And I was in a conversation recently
- 12:55Speaker 5: with someone who's trying to get us to do something
- 12:58Speaker 5: with our farm. And the meat tray was quite happy
- 13:02Speaker 5: to ask the difficult questions and to leave the uncomfortable silence. And,
- 13:07Speaker 5: and afterwards I said to him, it's interesting, men are
- 13:09Speaker 5: quite happy to do that. Men are quite happy to say,
- 13:12Speaker 5: I don't like it. I don't want it. I'm not
- 13:15Speaker 5: going to pay you. And whereas women are conditioned to go, oh,
- 13:19Speaker 5: you know, Catherine, you've immediately thought of the relationship issue
- 13:22Speaker 5: and who knows who and how do I do this?
- 13:25Speaker 5: Whereas really what you should do is stand up for yourself.
- 13:28Speaker 5: But what we do as women is go, oh, okay,
- 13:30Speaker 5: I'll internalize this, but I'm never coming back here. I'll
- 13:33Speaker 5: put myself in this situation again. And I don't know
- 13:36Speaker 5: the way out of it. I think I would have
- 13:37Speaker 5: done the same thing. I would have been like, oh, okay, well,
- 13:39Speaker 5: I didn't ask for that. And just leave it open-ended
- 13:42Speaker 5: and hopefully– at the very end she says, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 5: I'm not going to charge you.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And I'm very critical of a lot of men on
- 13:48Speaker 1: this podcast, but I will say there is a lot
- 13:50Speaker 1: to be said for that.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Totally. The directness of the style of communication.
- 13:55Speaker 4: 100%.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And in actually going and in being upfront and saying it,
- 14:00Speaker 1: you actually then remove the emotion from it and go, oh, no,
- 14:03Speaker 1: that's actually not what I– that's not what we agreed
- 14:06Speaker 1: when I sat down.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Yeah, so I am trying to– so we're often having
- 14:10Speaker 5: these conversations– I'm trying to learn that and I'm learning
- 14:14Speaker 5: it off one of the best who, you know, his
- 14:16Speaker 5: negotiation style is whoever speaks first loses, right? I love that.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I'm trying to adopt that a little bit because as
- 14:23Speaker 5: Catherine knows and as you both know, I hate silence, right,
- 14:28Speaker 5: whereas my husband is so comfortable in silence. So, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 5: we've been together for 3,000 years. I'm trying to learn
- 14:35Speaker 5: it from him but I'm actually also trying to be
- 14:37Speaker 5: more assertive And to be comfortable with the uncomfortableness. And
- 14:41Speaker 5: I think it's about putting it out there. But the
- 14:43Speaker 5: way I'm trying to do it at the moment is
- 14:45Speaker 5: rather than go, that's not what I wanted, blah, blah, blah,
- 14:48Speaker 5: is to ask questions. Oh, so what I would try
- 14:51Speaker 5: to do in that situation is to say, did I
- 14:54Speaker 5: ask you for the forehead? Will I be paying for it?
- 14:56Speaker 5: Rather than, I didn't ask her, I'm not paying. So
- 14:59Speaker 5: I'm trying to get to halfway between the uncomfortableness that
- 15:03Speaker 5: most blokes are prepared to go with, which is actually...
- 15:06Speaker 5: I can see how it's really useful because you can
- 15:08Speaker 5: cut to the chase so much quicker. And I would
- 15:11Speaker 5: rather have the uncomfortable moment, but then get to where
- 15:14Speaker 5: you need to get to so that everyone's really clear
- 15:16Speaker 5: and much happier with the results. So I think we've
- 15:18Speaker 5: got a bit to learn there.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Then leave and have steam coming out your ears like
- 15:22Speaker 3: I did.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 15:23Speaker 5: And feel like you've been ripped off or feel like
- 15:25Speaker 5: you've whatever. And maybe... Maybe she wasn't trying to rip
- 15:28Speaker 5: you off, but you don't know. Neither of you know
- 15:30Speaker 5: because we just don't have these conversations.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Well, I think let's assume she wasn't trying to rip
- 15:34Speaker 1: you off because she's as aware of the personal connections
- 15:37Speaker 1: as you are. So I assume that her intention was good. However,
- 15:43Speaker 1: that doesn't mean you should be in a position of
- 15:45Speaker 1: having to pay for a service that you didn't that
- 15:48Speaker 1: you expressly didn't ask for. So, you know, yeah, I
- 15:52Speaker 1: would have done what you did. I should have done
- 15:55Speaker 1: what Liz has talked about.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's the thing. If I didn't know this
- 15:59Speaker 3: lady and she didn't know people I knew, I would
- 16:01Speaker 3: have made it very clear that that's not what I
- 16:04Speaker 3: wanted and I would have been very upset about it.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Funny you talk about the silence because when we were
- 16:08Speaker 3: with the Diamonds and we had leading teams come in
- 16:11Speaker 3: and talk to us about leadership and about our culture
- 16:14Speaker 3: and we were trying to develop that, I was the
- 16:16Speaker 3: vice captain at the time with Sherelle or Nat Vomberto.
- 16:19Speaker 3: And every time there was a group discussion and the
- 16:23Speaker 3: guy facilitating it would ask a question and there was silence,
- 16:27Speaker 3: I would jump in and say something. And he actually
- 16:29Speaker 3: pulled me aside after one of these sessions and said,
- 16:33Speaker 3: why do you keep saying something? And I'm like, because
- 16:35Speaker 3: no one else is saying anything. And I don't want
- 16:38Speaker 3: you to think that this team isn't. And he goes,
- 16:41Speaker 3: you know what? I get that. That's not your job.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I'm very comfortable with the silence. And he said, so
- 16:48Speaker 3: you need to challenge yourself not to do that because
- 16:51Speaker 3: we know that you're doing that from a leadership side
- 16:54Speaker 3: because everyone else is. But he said, you don't do that.
- 16:57Speaker 1: And they will let you do it because they know
- 16:59Speaker 1: that you will step forward.
- 17:00Speaker 3: It was the best thing going forward in the next
- 17:03Speaker 3: week of meetings or whatever we had. I sat there
- 17:05Speaker 3: and I felt no pressure.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 3: To do something just because nobody else was, it was liberating.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Yeah, and also it creates space for someone who might
- 17:17Speaker 5: not talk to talk, right? And I think that's really hard.
- 17:21Speaker 3: How long do you leave it in silence though before,
- 17:23Speaker 3: you know, but it was so good.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Well, if you're the meat tray, whose birthday it is today.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Happy birthday, Matthew.
- 17:30Speaker 5: Happy birthday, Matthew. And for his present, I'm giving him
- 17:32Speaker 5: three hours of peace and silence because I'm in here
- 17:34Speaker 5: talking with him. But I've also left him with two children.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Three hours of quality time with his beautiful children.
- 17:42Speaker 5: That's right, and he's able to do quality things with them.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Let me tell you what he's doing with them. They
- 17:47Speaker 5: were like, well, what do we buy Daddy for his birthday?
- 17:49Speaker 5: What do we buy Daddy for his birthday? I'm like, no, no,
- 17:51Speaker 5: you're going to give him some time while I'm doing
- 17:54Speaker 5: the podcast. And so they're going down to drench and
- 17:59Speaker 5: cut the testicles off young cows. Oh, my God, that's
- 18:03Speaker 5: what I did for my birthday.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Is that why Pete's talking with that high voice?
- 18:12Speaker 5: Austin's like, what we buy? I'm like, mate, you're going
- 18:14Speaker 5: down to the cattle yards and you're going to drench
- 18:16Speaker 5: and vaccinate and do whatever. And there's a couple of
- 18:19Speaker 5: bull calves that we need to sort out.
- 18:21Speaker 6: So.
- 18:21Speaker 3: However, he just came in before. We were chatting with
- 18:24Speaker 3: him before we went on air and he said he's
- 18:26Speaker 3: building a basketball hoop with Matthew as well.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Well, no, there's three hours, right? There's only 15 carves
- 18:32Speaker 5: to do, so it won't take that long. But he
- 18:34Speaker 5: and Matthew are also building a basketball backboard together. And
- 18:38Speaker 5: I said to us, you can paint it whatever colour
- 18:40Speaker 5: you like. And I thought he wanted to paint it like,
- 18:42Speaker 5: you know, just plain white and black. Anyway, the basketball
- 18:45Speaker 5: background will be Shutterbug.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Oh, what color is that?
- 18:49Speaker 5: It's quite a pretty green. Oh, nice. Shutterbug. Very cool.
- 18:53Speaker 5: There's a whole other discussion one day about, you know,
- 18:56Speaker 5: the people who make cakes and the drugs that they're
- 18:58Speaker 5: on there. Evelyn, thank you.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Hi, Evelyn.
- 19:00Speaker 5: It's my order that I needed.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Happy birthday to Evelyn too.
- 19:03Speaker 5: No, thanks. That was last week's episode.
- 19:05Speaker 3: I did tell Austie more than okay with the building
- 19:08Speaker 3: and quality time with Matthew, but it is not to
- 19:10Speaker 3: replace the netball hoop.
- 19:12Speaker 5: No, no, actually they're on the same court. They're on
- 19:14Speaker 5: the same piece of concrete and I'm looking out there now.
- 19:17Speaker 5: So the netball ring is on one side. That doesn't
- 19:20Speaker 5: get much use given that everyone's grown up to be
- 19:22Speaker 5: a defender and the basketball backboard will be on the
- 19:25Speaker 5: other part of the half court.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Well, she's not yet 16. She could be Australia's most prolific,
- 19:30Speaker 1: international netball's most prolific shooter. Starting at 16, right?
- 19:34Speaker 5: She could be, but I've seen a shoot. I don't
- 19:35Speaker 5: think there's much potential there.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Hey, did you just text your family and say, can
- 19:41Speaker 1: someone bring me a water bottle?
- 19:43Speaker 5: Yes, I did. Yeah, because that's what you do. Can
- 19:45Speaker 5: I can i make a nice segue though yeah uh
- 19:47Speaker 5: well i think it's a nice segue about katherine's hair
- 19:50Speaker 5: i don't know why you went to get foils because
- 19:52Speaker 5: you could have just worn a cat oh.
- 19:54Speaker 3: No yours is actually driving you can you just give
- 19:57Speaker 3: me a little bit of peak can you.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Think you're too flat it out for me you're flat flat.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Oh we all flat or is mine okay no you're
- 20:04Speaker 3: okay i made sure i got a bit of a
- 20:06Speaker 3: peak you.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Can't make if you wear glasses.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Let's talk about these hats because they're beautiful. They are
- 20:13Speaker 1: a collaboration between the Confident Girls Foundation and Budgie Smuggler.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It says YTG, yeah, the girls. And they are being
- 20:20Speaker 1: released around the International Day of the Girl Child, the
- 20:24Speaker 1: United Nations International Day of the Girl Child, which is
- 20:28Speaker 1: on October the 11th, which the goal is to raise
- 20:30Speaker 1: awareness about gender inequality, lack of education, child marriage and
- 20:34Speaker 1: violence against young girls. And while I was researching that,
- 20:38Speaker 1: let me just read you another couple of quick headlines
- 20:40Speaker 1: that came up here about why this is so bloody
- 20:42Speaker 1: important to have this day.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Child marriage.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Over 12 million girls are married annually before adulthood.
- 20:48Speaker 2: What?
- 20:49Speaker 4: Yep.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Millions of girls remain outside of school or lack access
- 20:54Speaker 1: to proper training. Young adolescent girls face high rates of
- 20:57Speaker 1: abuse and health inequalities. So 12 million girls are married.
- 21:03Speaker 2: That's insane. When they are children. Like that is. Just obscene.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Wow.
- 21:10Speaker 2: But on a happier note, these hats.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Are really cool.
- 21:13Speaker 2: They're awesome.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And I'm pretty sure we'll be able to buy them
- 21:17Speaker 1: through the Confident Girls Foundation website there.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we were. Get on board, yeah. It's my new
- 21:22Speaker 3: favourite hat. I love it.
- 21:23Speaker 2: So that's purple stitching there and there. What would we
- 21:26Speaker 2: call this? Is this ecru or what colour do we
- 21:30Speaker 2: call this?
- 21:30Speaker 3: Well, I call it it's one of those great colours
- 21:32Speaker 3: that goes with everything. That's all you need to know.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Very nice, yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 5: I think it's Richie Beno beige.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Richie Bonobos.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Oh, that could be, yeah. Safari suit.
- 21:41Speaker 1: The white, the off-white, the cream. Yes, so thank you
- 21:44Speaker 1: for bringing our attention to that, which it does cover
- 21:47Speaker 1: Catherine's newly foiled hair.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Yes, it does. And it also helps us to understand
- 21:52Speaker 5: why netball is so important.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And a beautiful end to our first segment. We're going
- 21:57Speaker 1: to take a little break and come back and talk
- 21:58Speaker 1: about netball.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Yay.
- 22:02Speaker 6: Woot, woot.
- 22:15Speaker 1: So, look, not much is happening in Netball at the moment,
- 22:18Speaker 1: but it was an exciting week last week.
- 22:21Speaker 2: And I surprised you at your workplace, Catherine.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I know. Do you know what she did?
- 22:25Speaker 4: What?
- 22:25Speaker 3: I was emceeing the event and I'm on the microphone
- 22:28Speaker 3: doing the welcome. Oh, sorry. This is the ASICS Diamonds
- 22:32Speaker 3: dress reveal.
- 22:33Speaker 1: And I did ask if I could wear the dress
- 22:35Speaker 1: and they won't let me. LAUGHTER I wanted to wear
- 22:39Speaker 1: it for the podcast today and they.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Said, oh, look, we might just keep that special. high
- 22:45Speaker 2: performance so I'm high performer I'm just not for netball
- 22:48Speaker 2: yeah anyway.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Well it's disappointing you don't have your tan ready though
- 22:52Speaker 3: so anyway um but I was doing the welcome at
- 22:54Speaker 3: the start of it and I look over and see
- 22:57Speaker 3: her standing there and I was like oh Carolyn hi
- 22:59Speaker 3: oh shit I'm working way in the middle of.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Saying I got acknowledged by name.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Yes it was very nice no but it was so
- 23:07Speaker 3: good had um Amy Parmenter Sophie Dwyer and Georgie Horchers.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 23:13Speaker 5: So they let you in the same room as her.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yep. It was very exciting. And Carolyn got to talk
- 23:18Speaker 3: to her. I got to have a good chat with her, actually.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Would you like to hear a little bit of the
- 23:22Speaker 1: conversation that I had with Georgie?
- 23:25Speaker 5: It was, yeah, it was.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I'm going to. I'm going to play.
- 23:28Speaker 1: But I will say the dress, JLP helped ASICS in
- 23:32Speaker 1: the design of it. There was a bit of a panel,
- 23:34Speaker 1: Q & A panel where we talked about that.
- 23:36Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and she's done a fabulous job there and they
- 23:41Speaker 1: said she had a lot of feedback, so there was
- 23:43Speaker 1: a lot of back and forth.
- 23:44Speaker 2: But listen to this.
- 23:47Speaker 1: So, Georgie, you're in Sydney. Why have you had to
- 23:50Speaker 1: come to Sydney?
- 23:51Speaker 5: For the new ASICS dress launch. Very exciting, very exciting.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Is it a bit of a worry when you come
- 23:57Speaker 6: to Sydney?
- 23:59Speaker 5: I've heard that I do have a stalker here, yes.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I think she's quite a well-intentioned stalker, but I think
- 24:05Speaker 1: that when you come with the other Thunderbirds, it might
- 24:07Speaker 1: be safety in numbers.
- 24:10Speaker 5: I think so, no. She's great. I think Kath is
- 24:12Speaker 5: actually someone I looked up to for a long time, yes.
- 24:15Speaker 6: She'll be delighted to hear that.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And you know she was on the Georgie Hordris bandwagon
- 24:20Speaker 1: very early on. She saw you and went, That young
- 24:23Speaker 1: woman is going places.
- 24:25Speaker 5: No, she's been very supportive for me for a long time, yes.
- 24:29Speaker 6: So has Hodge invited her to Christmas this year?
- 24:31Speaker 5: I think so. I think he DMs her a few times.
- 24:35Speaker 5: And Mum, I think she's taken his phone away because, yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 5: He loves to send some DMs.
- 24:40Speaker 6: But we have your mum, Andrea. She's one of our dribblers,
- 24:42Speaker 6: isn't she? She is. We love that. Hi, Andrea. Your
- 24:44Speaker 6: daughter's done an amazing job today.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Well, if you're ever in trouble, blink twice and Liz
- 24:50Speaker 1: and I will come in and escort Catherine from the premises.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Oh, thank you.
- 24:54Speaker 6: I'm a bit excited too, talking to Georgie Horchers. Thanks, Georgie.
- 24:58Speaker 5: No, thank you.
- 25:00Speaker 3: You caught the fan, girl. Mm-hmm.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 25:03Speaker 3: See?
- 25:04Speaker 2: Well, I just, you know, I love a quality mid-quarter.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, she's so humble, isn't she?
- 25:09Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:09Speaker 3: She just is so humble.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But she also talked about she likes the dress design
- 25:13Speaker 1: because it suits the shorter girls too. So, you know, and,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know, by shorter girls, still freakishly tall, above the
- 25:20Speaker 1: average height of Australian women, but, you know, shorter than
- 25:23Speaker 1: some of the others. So Sophie Dwyer was also there
- 25:25Speaker 1: and Amy Parmenter had a great chat with her too.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Rob hasn't DM'd me in a long time actually.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Oh.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 2: So that's Hodge.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's Hodge.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I remember when you first met him at a pub. Oh, Ange,
- 25:38Speaker 2: is that?
- 25:38Speaker 5: I apologise.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Yes, I did meet him at a pub in
- 25:42Speaker 3: Adelaide and he asked me if he thought his daughter
- 25:44Speaker 3: would ever play for Australia.
- 25:46Speaker 2: What, not recently?
- 25:47Speaker 3: No, a while ago. It was a while back and
- 25:49Speaker 3: I said, we were both a few drinks in at
- 25:52Speaker 3: this point, I said, oh, do you want the truth
- 25:56Speaker 3: from me? And he said, yeah, I do. I said,
- 25:58Speaker 3: I don't think so. I think she should be the
- 26:00Speaker 3: first one selected, 100%, but I feel like height may
- 26:05Speaker 3: hold her back.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Yeah. And then when she got selected, when I saw
- 26:09Speaker 3: him next, I was like.
- 26:10Speaker 2: What do I know?
- 26:11Speaker 4: How good. Wow.
- 26:14Speaker 3: It's interesting, isn't it?
- 26:15Speaker 2: I think it's big of you to admit that, Catherine.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I was completely wrong and I'm so glad I was wrong.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And actually it's her height that contributes to her effectiveness too,
- 26:27Speaker 1: doesn't it? Because they have to actually play against her
- 26:30Speaker 1: in a different way.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I hated defending shorter players. Oh, the worst, right? Because
- 26:36Speaker 5: you spent the whole time going, Where's she gone? Where's
- 26:38Speaker 5: she gone?
- 26:39Speaker 3: Where's she gone? Where is she? Where is she? Oh,
- 26:41Speaker 3: she's got the bottom.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Of the post.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I'm an idiot.
- 26:44Speaker 3: I remember we've probably talked about this before, but I
- 26:47Speaker 3: remember the first time the Swifts played the Melbourne Phoenix,
- 26:52Speaker 3: it must have been, and Casey By, who was new
- 26:54Speaker 3: to our team, a new defender to our team, came
- 26:57Speaker 3: onto the court and was playing on Sherelle McMahon.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Yep.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Casey was probably a bit oblivious to netball and who
- 27:05Speaker 3: played it and who the great players were. She was
- 27:07Speaker 3: just happy to be there. She loved the game. Yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 3: and she was.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Studying medicine, right?
- 27:11Speaker 6: Yes.
- 27:11Speaker 5: She had other things in her brain. She's actually a
- 27:14Speaker 5: fabulous menopause doctor on the mid-north coast of New South Wales.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 27:17Speaker 5: There's a little bit by the by. Anyway, back you go.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Anyway, the first 15 minutes came off and she was like, oh,
- 27:23Speaker 3: that goal attack's pretty good, isn't she? LAUGHTER Yes, you
- 27:28Speaker 3: just got your ass handed to you by the best
- 27:30Speaker 3: goal attack in the world, actually.
- 27:32Speaker 5: I love that. But, you know, I remember the first
- 27:35Speaker 5: time I played Shirelle, I spent the whole time going,
- 27:37Speaker 5: where is she?
- 27:38Speaker 3: Exactly. That's what made me think about it because just
- 27:40Speaker 3: a little bit smaller for a shooter, elusive, super fast,
- 27:44Speaker 3: all the things, it just makes it so much harder
- 27:46Speaker 3: to play against them. So, yes.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Something that has been coming up on my feed lately because, again, remember,
- 27:52Speaker 1: change your feed, change the world, is– 1999, was it?
- 27:58Speaker 1: Nepal World Cup, 41 all with 30 seconds to go.
- 28:02Speaker 1: New Zealand had the ball, missed a goal, came up
- 28:05Speaker 1: the other end. One of the Australians actually fell and.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Then sort of- Shelly O'Donnell. Was it Shelly O'Donnell?
- 28:11Speaker 1: Then sort of flicked it away to someone else who
- 28:13Speaker 1: gets it into Shirell, who scores with one second to go.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It was sensational.
- 28:20Speaker 3: And what a- The comedy of errors, that last passage
- 28:23Speaker 3: of play was, because I reckon there was also a step.
- 28:26Speaker 3: It looked like a step in the midst of all
- 28:27Speaker 3: that chaos after the drop ball. I think Carissa picked
- 28:30Speaker 3: it up, passed it to Sherelle. That could have been
- 28:32Speaker 3: offensive contact when she flew into the circle. It was
- 28:35Speaker 3: just like, oh, my God.
- 28:36Speaker 5: So good.
- 28:37Speaker 1: With no time to go. And they weren't even sure
- 28:39Speaker 1: at the last, when the hooter went, did that count?
- 28:41Speaker 2: Was it off in time?
- 28:42Speaker 1: So it took a little second, but the Australians were
- 28:44Speaker 1: already celebrating. But I saw that because Georgia Radjic, who
- 28:47Speaker 1: is a friend of the podcast, the SEN sports journo,
- 28:50Speaker 1: She put it up on her Instagram and she said
- 28:52Speaker 1: she used to look at that clip regularly when she
- 28:55Speaker 1: was in year 12 to remind her that anything is possible.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And I thought, what a great little affirmation to be
- 29:02Speaker 1: watching because, yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Wasn't that the World Cup where they just set you
- 29:05Speaker 3: up to fail? The Australian team's too old. They're a
- 29:08Speaker 3: bunch of geriatrics, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Yep, yep.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Look how old we are now. I mean, not the team, us.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Well, actually the headline when we got there in the
- 29:17Speaker 5: paper was Jill's geriatrics.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Really?
- 29:21Speaker 5: Yeah. And that game.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Suck shit.
- 29:26Speaker 5: But that game at three quarter time was six goals down.
- 29:29Speaker 5: So not only is anything impossible, like if you watch
- 29:32Speaker 5: that last quarter, well, six goals down, Jenny Borlase got
- 29:36Speaker 5: subbed on as goal shooter for Vicky Wilson and Jenny
- 29:38Speaker 5: just played the 15 minutes of her life. She just
- 29:40Speaker 5: got on and ran, mixed things up. And we got
- 29:45Speaker 5: back and Peter Squire played the most unbelievable 15 minutes
- 29:48Speaker 5: I've ever seen of a wing defence. Like she was
- 29:50Speaker 5: just impeccable. And that last goal came off the back
- 29:55Speaker 5: of just one of the massive, an enormous comeback that
- 29:58Speaker 5: nobody felt more capable of.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Wow.
- 30:01Speaker 5: That's so cool. It was so cool. And, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 5: sometimes like I'll see that come up, but like occasionally
- 30:08Speaker 5: you'll see like a link through to the last 15 minutes.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And if I ever watch that last 15 minutes, even
- 30:14Speaker 5: the last five minutes of that game, Oh, God, it
- 30:16Speaker 5: was nearly 30 years ago, but I still get really
- 30:18Speaker 5: emotional because it was such a– like it was just
- 30:21Speaker 5: the most amazing 15 minutes of netball.
- 30:24Speaker 3: And that's what we wanted the World Cup next year
- 30:26Speaker 3: at home, please. We want to win, but a nice
- 30:30Speaker 3: cracking game like that would be awesome, wouldn't it?
- 30:32Speaker 5: It would be great, wouldn't it?
- 30:32Speaker 6: I do want it.
- 30:33Speaker 1: We're going to just have to finish our netball segment soon.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I'm going to play another little bit of an interview
- 30:37Speaker 1: that I did at the dress thing on our Friday, but– oh,
- 30:43Speaker 1: I completely lost– I've forgotten– I don't know what.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I was about to say. How's that menopause brain going
- 30:47Speaker 3: over there?
- 30:47Speaker 2: How is that menopause brain going?
- 30:49Speaker 3: It'll come to you at 3 o'clock in the morning.
- 30:51Speaker 2: It will come to me at 3 o'clock in the morning.
- 30:53Speaker 5: When you're hot and sweaty.
- 30:54Speaker 2: I have no idea what I was about to say.
- 30:57Speaker 2: It must have been.
- 30:57Speaker 3: It must have been really good though.
- 30:58Speaker 2: It must have been so good. Imagine how good it was.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Let's just sit.
- 31:03Speaker 1: See if it comes back. Do you know that Tenacious
- 31:06Speaker 1: D song? This is not the greatest song in the world.
- 31:08Speaker 1: This is just a tribute. Well, what I'm doing now
- 31:10Speaker 1: is a tribute to the greatest podcast idea I've ever had.
- 31:15Speaker 1: But this is just a tribute because it's gone missing. But, jeez,
- 31:18Speaker 1: for a second there it was a good idea.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Do you know what? I'm going to just go out
- 31:21Speaker 3: on a limb and say that was awesome.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Because I know it would have been good.
- 31:25Speaker 1: I feel like we're hitting podcast excellence at the moment, obviously.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Maybe we should have a little bit of a break.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I think you need it.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I think it's necessary. You're not going to play the
- 31:38Speaker 3: other interview that you did say you would play, no?
- 31:40Speaker 2: No, I'll do it in Friday's.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 31:42Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 31:43Speaker 2: See, we're running long now. People have got things to
- 31:45Speaker 2: do with their day.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Apologies, everyone.
- 31:47Speaker 2: We need to have some stuff to talk about. Let's
- 31:49Speaker 2: have that break.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Music Okay.
- 32:05Speaker 3: I've got a things that make you go.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Have you?
- 32:07Speaker 1: You've got a things that make you go. And I
- 32:09Speaker 1: have two notable recommends.
- 32:12Speaker 5: I've got a notable recommends too, but I'll do it
- 32:13Speaker 5: on Friday.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Oh, okay, fantastic.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Let me start with my notable recommends.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I've got two. I'm going to start with one of them.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Listen to the Sportish podcast. So this is Georgie and
- 32:27Speaker 1: Libby Trickett. They've got an interview that dropped this week
- 32:29Speaker 1: with Katie Walker from the Firebirds. Really fascinating discussion and,
- 32:35Speaker 1: you know, a lot of fantastic insight about constructive coaching and,
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know, I think we saw– Year before last or
- 32:45Speaker 1: last year?
- 32:46Speaker 2: When was it that.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Things went pretty poorly for the Firebirds and Katie helped
- 32:52Speaker 1: step in and right the ship there? And I think
- 32:56Speaker 1: that there are certain interpersonal qualities that she brings to
- 33:00Speaker 1: her coaching. It's a really fascinating discussion. So that's sportish,
- 33:05Speaker 1: so have a listen to that one. They've actually got
- 33:06Speaker 1: a range of really fascinating interviews. So when you finish
- 33:10Speaker 1: listening to No Dribble each week, Maybe you could go
- 33:12Speaker 1: and listen to that.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Are they in the top 300 of podcasts as well?
- 33:17Speaker 2: Oh, well, Catherine, interesting you should ask. No, they are not.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Are we the only females?
- 33:22Speaker 2: We are the only women's sport podcast in the top 300.
- 33:26Speaker 5: I like to think of us as a bit of
- 33:27Speaker 5: a wedge though, right? So we're wedging our way into
- 33:30Speaker 5: the top 300 and we're going to bring all the
- 33:32Speaker 5: other female podcasts with us.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Come on. Love that. We're like the ambulance. You know
- 33:39Speaker 3: when the ambulance drive past and you get behind it?
- 33:41Speaker 2: You drive behind them.
- 33:42Speaker 3: You get behind it and you get through it. That's us.
- 33:44Speaker 3: We're the ambulance guys.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so in August we were ranked 208th. So the
- 33:50Speaker 1: Australian podcast ranks the top 300 and we went in
- 33:54Speaker 1: three months ago for the first time at 284th, which
- 33:57Speaker 1: is wonderful. And then the following month we were like
- 34:00Speaker 1: 268th and then in August we were 208th.
- 34:01Speaker 2: So the.
- 34:04Speaker 1: September rankings will come out in October. So I tell
- 34:09Speaker 1: you what, we will have dropped a little bit in
- 34:11Speaker 1: September because we've now got quite a lot of traffic
- 34:14Speaker 1: going to YouTube. So it's measured in a different way.
- 34:18Speaker 1: But please, if you haven't subscribed to our YouTube channel,
- 34:22Speaker 1: No Dribble Podcast.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Please subscribe. It's free.
- 34:24Speaker 1: It takes a second, but it makes a real difference
- 34:27Speaker 1: for us because In spite of how well this podcast
- 34:30Speaker 1: is doing compared with many other podcasts that have a
- 34:34Speaker 1: lot of support, so a number of these ones in
- 34:37Speaker 1: the top 300 are like ABC podcasts. So they obviously
- 34:40Speaker 1: have an enormous amount of support there in terms of
- 34:43Speaker 1: cross-promotion and the like that we don't have. So in
- 34:46Speaker 1: spite of how well we are doing, we're still not
- 34:49Speaker 1: monetising this podcast, which I think is just a reflection
- 34:53Speaker 1: of the entire ecosystem of Women's sport, but particularly netball,
- 34:59Speaker 1: I think there is a real lag in sponsors seeing
- 35:04Speaker 1: the value of what we've got. But our numbers are
- 35:06Speaker 1: off the charts. They need to be more off the charts.
- 35:09Speaker 1: So please do share this podcast. And if you could
- 35:11Speaker 1: go and subscribe to YouTube there for us, once we
- 35:14Speaker 1: hit over 1,000 subscribers, then YouTube says, oh, let's pay
- 35:18Speaker 1: attention over here. So please do that. That would be
- 35:21Speaker 1: a great thing to do for us.
- 35:22Speaker 3: And in the meantime, if you think of any sponsors...
- 35:25Speaker 3: We are open to conversation.
- 35:26Speaker 2: We absolutely are. Yeah.
- 35:30Speaker 5: Thank you to all our listeners for getting this far.
- 35:32Speaker 4: I know.
- 35:32Speaker 5: We couldn't do it without you guys. And we wouldn't
- 35:34Speaker 5: bother doing it if it wasn't for you guys.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 35:36Speaker 5: Because normally we would be doing this like at a bar.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:39Speaker 5: We're not doing it at a bar. So here we are.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Just so you know, we aren't exclusive. We do still
- 35:45Speaker 3: do this at a bar.
- 35:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:47Speaker 1: And I forget more important things that I was going
- 35:50Speaker 1: to say when we're doing it there.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Now, listen, my things that make you go hmm. Hmm.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Things that make you go hmm.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Things that make you go hmm. I saw an ad
- 36:04Speaker 3: on television the other day, Sydney Water.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Don't know if you've seen these ads, but a woman says, oh, no,
- 36:10Speaker 3: I accidentally poured milk down the sink. And that goes, oh,
- 36:14Speaker 3: you have to remember it's only water, soap and detergent
- 36:17Speaker 3: down the sink.
- 36:19Speaker 4: What?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:20Speaker 3: What do you do with all your excess liquids? I
- 36:22Speaker 3: put everything down the sink. Like what?
- 36:24Speaker 5: Like oil?
- 36:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 3: No, no, no, not oil. That's the one thing I
- 36:27Speaker 3: wouldn't do. But if there's leftover milk or juice or
- 36:30Speaker 3: if I've got wine that I haven't drunk, everything goes
- 36:33Speaker 3: down the sink. Liquids. But they're saying that you can't
- 36:37Speaker 3: do that.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I don't understand that because what's the difference between you drinking.
- 36:43Speaker 2: The wine and weeing it? compared to just pouring it
- 36:47Speaker 2: down the sink.
- 36:47Speaker 5: Well, you don't wee out straight wine. I mean, there's
- 36:50Speaker 5: a process between this end and that end.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Yes, but it's still the same consistency, isn't it?
- 36:57Speaker 3: Yes. Is that weird? Do you put liquids down the sink?
- 37:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I have.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Where are you supposed to put them if it's not
- 37:04Speaker 3: the sink?
- 37:04Speaker 1: Well, I guess you're meant to pour them outside somewhere, but,
- 37:08Speaker 1: you know, you live in an apartment, so that's a
- 37:09Speaker 1: pain in the bum, isn't it?
- 37:10Speaker 3: But if you're pouring it outside somewhere, is it then
- 37:12Speaker 3: going in a drain and going down.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Where it should end up anyway?
- 37:15Speaker 5: Maybe it gets filtered if you pour it into a
- 37:17Speaker 5: plant or something, it gets filtered. I mean, be like me,
- 37:20Speaker 5: be on a septic system. Everything that you pour down
- 37:22Speaker 5: the sink ends up in your paddock somewhere.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Yeah, but I was like, what?
- 37:26Speaker 2: What am I missing here?
- 37:27Speaker 1: Under no circumstances am I moving to the country.
- 37:29Speaker 6: No, me neither.
- 37:30Speaker 5: Oh, come on, you two, live a little.
- 37:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 3: It's like quick shower.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 37:35Speaker 3: I was going to have an everything shower. Isn't that
- 37:37Speaker 3: what the kids call it these days when they're in
- 37:39Speaker 3: there for like five hours?
- 37:40Speaker 5: Well, not my kids. We've got an egg timer. Rightio,
- 37:43Speaker 5: three minutes is up.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Get out.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Mind you, if you can't do it in three minutes,
- 37:47Speaker 5: like you're taking a piss.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Yeah, fair enough. Well, you're not doing that in the shower.
- 37:51Speaker 5: No, you are most certainly not. But you could at
- 37:53Speaker 5: our place because it all goes into the same septic system.
- 37:56Speaker 5: But I don't know. Like I would have thought you
- 37:57Speaker 5: could pour milk, cordial, soft drink.
- 38:00Speaker 3: All of it?
- 38:01Speaker 5: All the things.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 3: I don't do oil. I do know that oil and
- 38:05Speaker 3: water don't mix. But I was like, what? How long
- 38:07Speaker 3: has this been a thing?
- 38:08Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I mean, maybe we could have investigated it a little
- 38:12Speaker 2: bit more, but I.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Guess– No, I like it when we haven't investigated it.
- 38:17Speaker 3: You all just look at me blankly.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Let's not pretend to be experts on anything here. I'm
- 38:23Speaker 1: going to give you something, Catherine, though, that I think
- 38:26Speaker 1: will make you feel better.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Liz, you will be jealous that you don't have this.
- 38:28Speaker 2: So I did a gig.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Last Friday night, I was a late call up when
- 38:32Speaker 1: someone else dropped out due to a Newcastle Nights event
- 38:36Speaker 1: coming up that he had to do. So Friday night,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I did my mate, Andrew Barnett. For those of you
- 38:40Speaker 1: who were at the Penrith live event that we had,
- 38:43Speaker 1: he did the opening set for us. Very funny, great bloke,
- 38:46Speaker 1: big in sport and comedy. And so he had a
- 38:48Speaker 1: show that he was doing at the Sydney Fringe Comedy
- 38:51Speaker 1: Festival called Sport Versus Entertainment. So it was a team
- 38:55Speaker 1: of comedians. I was not on that team. versus a
- 38:58Speaker 1: team of sports people.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Oh, you're the sports person. I was the captain of
- 39:02Speaker 2: the sport team.
- 39:05Speaker 4: This is great.
- 39:05Speaker 2: So I took.
- 39:06Speaker 1: My 1996 Top End Indoor Sports Netball Trophy to show
- 39:10Speaker 1: and my CrossFit trophies. But my team member was the
- 39:15Speaker 1: captain of the Australian men's water polo team, so Nathan Powell.
- 39:20Speaker 2: But anyway.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Barney had this backstage. He's a Newcastle boy. This is
- 39:24Speaker 1: seriously good jerky made in Newcastle. And this is red
- 39:28Speaker 1: wine and garlic. And I just had a bit. And Catherine,
- 39:32Speaker 1: try this.
- 39:32Speaker 2: It's like, it is... Jerky.
- 39:34Speaker 4: I love jerky.
- 39:35Speaker 2: You might have to do all the talking because we'll
- 39:37Speaker 2: be doing the jerky.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Have you jerkied before?
- 39:39Speaker 2: I love jerky.
- 39:39Speaker 3: This is my first jerky experience.
- 39:42Speaker 4: Ever. What? Ever.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Ever.
- 39:45Speaker 5: Why would you eat this?
- 39:45Speaker 3: Really? Because it's meat.
- 39:46Speaker 5: It's dry, delicious. So while you two are chewing... My
- 39:50Speaker 5: kids love jerky. Oh, my God. Our local butcher makes it. Yes,
- 39:54Speaker 5: it's great. So when we were in South Africa for,
- 39:58Speaker 5: I'm a celebrity, get me out of here. Biltong.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Biltong.
- 40:01Speaker 5: My kids tracked down a Biltong shop and we went
- 40:04Speaker 5: to this Biltong shop I've never seen. a bigger range
- 40:08Speaker 5: of biltong, this massive butcher, like it was just all
- 40:10Speaker 5: biltong in all different sort of tastes. And I've told
- 40:13Speaker 5: you a really boring story to get you two through salivating.
- 40:15Speaker 3: This is quite possibly the best thing I've put in
- 40:18Speaker 3: my mouth.
- 40:19Speaker 2: And this red wine and garlic, it tastes.
- 40:22Speaker 5: That's the top of the lollipop.
- 40:26Speaker 3: I'm taking a photo of it.
- 40:28Speaker 1: This red wine and garlic tastes like, A casserole that
- 40:31Speaker 1: you've had sitting on the stove on a slow cook
- 40:34Speaker 1: for hours and hours.
- 40:35Speaker 2: It's got a real richness to it.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 40:38Speaker 3: No one will recommend. That is outstanding.
- 40:40Speaker 2: What's it called?
- 40:40Speaker 6: Beef jerky.
- 40:41Speaker 3: I'm going to get some of that.
- 40:42Speaker 2: They've got a website, small batch beef jerky. This is fantastic.
- 40:47Speaker 5: Oh, not a paid commercial.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Not a paid commercial.
- 40:49Speaker 5: No, because I don't have any.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Get around it. No, you don't have any.
- 40:52Speaker 4: No.
- 40:53Speaker 2: It's a shame because you'd like it the most. But anyway.
- 40:55Speaker 3: It's got a QR code on the back to order
- 40:57Speaker 3: your next batch.
- 40:59Speaker 1: I might put a link in the show notes for
- 41:01Speaker 1: today's show. But that's actually all we've got time for today.
- 41:05Speaker 1: We will be back on Friday with another episode. I
- 41:08Speaker 1: still haven't remembered what I was going to say at
- 41:10Speaker 1: the end of that last segment, so who knows what
- 41:13Speaker 1: could happen between now and Friday's episode.
- 41:16Speaker 2: But, yes, this has been No Drool. My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I'm Kath Cox and I'm still drooling.
- 41:22Speaker 5: I'm Liz Ellis and I have no jerky.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, the girls.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Go the girls.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Bye.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Bye.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Oh, there's chilli and lime. Lime and cracked pepper. Catherine,
- 41:33Speaker 3: we're trying to stop the podcast. Honey and sweet.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Oh, sorry.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Are we done?
