- 0:14All right, welcome everybody to episode five of Cards and Categories. I'm Mike
- 0:19cool Art from rams Ball here, joined as always by Jamy Burr, also
- 0:23from rams Ball. Jeremy, how are you doing today? Doing fine?
- 0:27Today is a nice day here in central Illinois, nice and nice and windy,
- 0:32but I'm doing well. Exciting day of baseball at least last I looked
- 0:36a few minutes ago, there was no hitter being thrown by Michael Lorenzen,
- 0:40so maybe something for us to keep an eye on as the day goes on.
- 0:44Here he's actually in the looks like they're in the ninth and he's two
- 0:48ounce away, So might be an exciting, exciting pod here, unless somebody
- 0:54breaks up in the next five montes. So yeah, you also, do
- 0:57you want me to go back two episodes and delete ear takes on Michael Lorenzon
- 1:00falling up? I probably should because I'm pretty sure like that was the big
- 1:04take I pad was Lorenzen's not gonna be able to hold it, hold anything,
- 1:08and he is now through eight and two thirds five k's nowhere and runs.
- 1:15I don't. I don't think it's a perfect game. So he has
- 1:18okay walked for he's walked for you guys. He's also thrown a ton of
- 1:22pitches like this is a I'm impressed that they're letting him go the song he's
- 1:26had one hundred and seventeen before he faces Joey Manesas right now. But he's
- 1:30a rental. He's a rental. He's a rental arm. That is true.
- 1:34I have been noticing though that with the immaculate grade. I know you're
- 1:38not as big of an immaculate good guy, but I've noticed when you go
- 1:42in and especially you see some of these arms from like the seventies and eighties
- 1:46and you're like, Wow, this dude just like totally fell off a map
- 1:49after throwing a top five side young year or having like one of the years
- 1:55that counted for like a two hundred inning three it's not a three enter kid
- 2:00is number three hundred really usually, but it's like two hundred, two hundred
- 2:02k twenty win like square, and you're like, wow, he fell off
- 2:07a month, and you like look and it's like, uh, Mike Scott's
- 2:09really good example of this in the eighties, Like I think there was one
- 2:13year he put up like two hundred and seventy innings and just like clearly blew
- 2:17out his arm. Like everything after that was total garbage. And so it's
- 2:22just really strange that they're letting Lorenzen do this because the Phillies will need him
- 2:28down the stretch in some capacity. It's not the steadiest rotation and he could
- 2:34even come out with the bullpen, but he just spiked one eight feet short
- 2:38of the of the plate trying to get this strike out. Hey, you
- 2:43get they can't get a hit if they can't reach it. But yeah,
- 2:47we'll keep an eye on this. And otherwise, since we met last week,
- 2:52a lot of things have gone a little crazy in the baseball world.
- 2:57And I am going to get up here and talk about the Chicago White Sox.
- 3:00I think that's probably one of the biggest stories that's happened. And I
- 3:04think we're probably a little bit late in the news cycle to get our take
- 3:07on the Jose Ramires Tom Anderson fight. It's almost old news at this point.
- 3:13But everything that's shaken out since then, especially with the Kenyan Middleton comments
- 3:16about there being just no leadership in the White Sox clubhouse and accusations of rookies
- 3:23sleeping in the bullpen, which it's gotta be Gregory Santos. I think he's
- 3:27talking about. When I'm at games, I see Gregory Santos hanging around the
- 3:31bullpen a lot, and I have a feeling he might be the one napping
- 3:35under there. But it's you need to rest as a future closure. You
- 3:38need rest, So I don't see the problem. It's true. He's just
- 3:42in it for the health. You think, Yeah, there it is.
- 3:46Michael Arnton, no hitter, Michael lorens A no hitter, as is we
- 3:50astutely predicted a few pods ago. I think that's what I said, right,
- 3:54Yeah, I think he said he would be untouchable, untouchable or touched
- 4:00up often. So Michael rooms and no hitters for the Phillies. That's exciting
- 4:05to see. But yeah, back to Kenyon Middleton, his comments, it
- 4:11was very interesting to see what, you know, kind of his his perspective
- 4:14and his excitement of like the rules upon being traded to the Yankees, of
- 4:18he must shave. He was almost excited about that because there was some structure
- 4:21where he's going. I just can't imagine what that clubhouse is like, especially
- 4:26trading the big names they did, the clubhouse leaders like Lancelin. You know,
- 4:30it's it sounds like it's just mass chaos over there at this point,
- 4:34Well, it didn't even sound like Lancelin was a leader. It's kind of
- 4:38a totally rudderless ship. And honestly, I think it makes sense that when
- 4:42you kind of look at how they've played and how it's all fallen apart,
- 4:45and I honestly, I do think a big part of it is because the
- 4:48White Sox are family owned by Ransdorff, and it reminds me a little bit
- 4:54also kind of the Bears here in town where I don't know, sometimes with
- 4:58family businesses, like they're not quite maybe pushing as hard to get every cutting
- 5:02edge, and there is like a sense of just trying to do things that
- 5:06are right by people and things are operating smoothly. I think I especially see
- 5:12that within the Sox, Like I just look at Ricon, like Ricon as
- 5:15no business being a general manager anymore. Kenny Williams has been around forever,
- 5:20and there's lots of other people in positions throughout the organization that just have been
- 5:26around forever. And I think it's because Ryan Storft just kind of doesn't have
- 5:30that care like once he got that two thousand and five championship he got what
- 5:35he wanted out of the White Sox and at this point it's just a cash
- 5:40cow. He's done the same thing with the Bowls. So he used to
- 5:43have Bowl season tickets and you could kind of seeing the same ballets hang over
- 5:46that organization. And so what's kind of crazy though, is like I think
- 5:53this is a part of Socks fandom. Like I grew up, as you
- 5:57know, more of a Cardinals fan in Central Illinois with you never had like
- 6:00an ill will against the Socks, always had a soft spot for them because
- 6:04would still come up to Chicago on the South Side and see games as a
- 6:09kid. It was certainly much cheaper than Saint Louis so or Wrigley and easier
- 6:14to get to as noticed with all the parking lots around it. That makes
- 6:18kind of guaranteed rate feel infamous with all of its partying. But like that
- 6:24partying is part of like what being a Sox fan is. There's like a
- 6:28camaraderie and the misery, and like I see it so often that like what
- 6:32Sox fans love about the Socks more than anything else is being there with their
- 6:36friends, being there with their family and even just like the last game that
- 6:41I went to recently, I just ran into three friends that like I hadn't
- 6:46seen and we were all at the same game and didn't plan it at all.
- 6:49And I see that happen throughout the games constantly. It's a strange environment
- 6:55for like such a large city to have such a small town feel and it
- 6:59happens all the time. SOX games. Yeah, I was just you know,
- 7:02kind of taken aback by just the i'd say, the level of carelessness,
- 7:08uh and responsibility, you know, napping the bullpen, you know,
- 7:12missing team meetings, missing fielding drills, and like no repercussions whatsoever. And
- 7:16I I know, I personally played baseball for fifteen twenty years and I distinctly
- 7:23remember a time where I got called out out by a coach for for something
- 7:29and you know, the accountability that I even played when you know, not
- 7:32nearly major league level. But I had a scenario where we're in practice where
- 7:36you know, you taking BP, You're supposed to swing, you know,
- 7:41bunk the first ball, take ten swings, and then on the last pitch
- 7:46they'll call like a hit and run or something like that. So you have
- 7:47to try to hit the ball outside the zone just to protect the runner and
- 7:51I remember that. I you know, I was going through the sequence and
- 7:54then the pitch I got on the hit and run. It had to be
- 7:58like ten feet out of the box, like literally impossible to hit to hit,
- 8:01and I just let it go. I just let it go because I'm
- 8:03like, that's a past ball, Like there's not a chance in the world,
- 8:07like I could throw the bad at the thing. And I was running
- 8:09laughs after that because I did not protect the runner and I'm sitting here in
- 8:15the socks, like I didn't have to even show up to the meeting.
- 8:18Yeah. So it's it's just this you know, dynamic that like being a
- 8:22ball player, it's like an expectation of structure, like you're there to do
- 8:26your job, do what it is, and you show up in an environment
- 8:28like that. It's it's probably almost debilitating because they've their entire careers, they've
- 8:33had the structure of what to do, where to go, and you just
- 8:37have to follow the path and then play the game. And here there's just
- 8:41like yeah, whatever, you feel like. It's so, I mean,
- 8:46can we be surprised with performance on that? I mean I'd struggle with that
- 8:50for sure. No, And I wonder too that's why we haven't seen free
- 8:54agents signed there that Like the largest free agent contract they've ever handed out was
- 9:00the Ben Intendee five years, seventy five million this past off season. That
- 9:03that's absurd. That like in today's total stereotypical hero of Ben Attendee, just
- 9:09like the look of the guy that maybe the California surfer or whatever you want
- 9:13to call him, Like it feels like the guy that would fit that culture.
- 9:16Yeah, so maybe that's why he got the big contracts, Like,
- 9:18oh, another guy that just will just fly by sea his pants, He's
- 9:22gonna fit well here. Yeah, and maybe like the pressure that he had
- 9:24been feeling in Boston for all the years, like he was their big prospect
- 9:30and lots of people had a lot of expectations for him. Part of it
- 9:33too, is honestly, Ryan Storff and Hahn and Williams have been just up
- 9:39in arms over like trying to get Ben Attendee ever since he was in that
- 9:43draft. Like they loved him more than a fat kid loves cake, you
- 9:48know, in fact his other cakes. So that's that's saying something right there.
- 9:52I did drop that I was listening to some nineties hip hop over the
- 9:56weekend and I was I don't remember what song it was. I'm going to
- 9:58find it, maybe use as an outshore or something. But this is a
- 10:03terrible seg But speaking of terrible family businesses, the other big news of the
- 10:07week is the Baltimore Orioles. This isn't even on field related, but finding
- 10:13their announcer, well, I guess not finding, but suspending their announcer Kevin
- 10:18Brown for having disparaging comments about the Orioles record against the Rays a couple of
- 10:26weeks ago on a broadcast, which still like astounds me because like I've been
- 10:30reading more and more about it, and it sounds like that stat information and
- 10:35kind of stat blast that they covered before that game in the pregame was provided
- 10:41by Orioles PR and like Orioles like information for how the team had been doing
- 10:48against the Rays. So if you don't know what we're talking about, essentially
- 10:50what Kevin Brown did is he had a segment on a pregame for the Orioles
- 10:54broadcast in which they covered how terrible the Orioles had been in Tropicana Field over
- 11:01the past few years and how terrible the record had been and how it had
- 11:05been turning around because obviously the Orioles are in first place. They're doing really
- 11:09well. They've started being able to field teams that can win against the Rays
- 11:13in Tropicana, and Peter Angelos apparently took that personally and has put Kevin Brown
- 11:20on the shelf for these comments that I think maybe Angelos thinks that they were
- 11:28they were criticizing him unfairly for the terrible teams that the Orioles trotted out during
- 11:35the tanking. But I don't know. I can't get inside Peer Angelos's mind.
- 11:39All I know is it's a weird story. It's I just can't believe
- 11:43like it's happened, like on what a buzzkill on such a great season.
- 11:46Yeah, I think the what really kind of struck me is is the kind
- 11:50of point you kind of alluded to earlier. Like it wasn't like he went
- 11:54off on some rant on his own being like, oh, the Oriels has
- 11:56been terrible and we never can win. This team has been mismanaged to miss,
- 12:01you know, like they had graphics prepared for this segment like he was
- 12:05he was speaking from a script and then they were flashing up the stats about
- 12:09what he was talking about. It was I was sa premeditated, like and
- 12:13you know he he didn't go do all that research. We all know that
- 12:16he's the voice. He's not he's not the one doing the stats behind the
- 12:20scenes. So it's it's just it's crazy that you know, he he was
- 12:24just executing, probably reading the teleprompter or whatever. H those guys is doing
- 12:30the broadcast booth and being held accountable for something that he didn't even put together.
- 12:35So I I see your point, Like, I find it befuddling.
- 12:39I don't quite understand the move, if anything, you know, way to
- 12:43alienate your fan base. You know, from what I can tell, he's
- 12:46a pretty well respected, you know, announcer for the team, and you
- 12:52know, trying to get pr or whatever you're trying to do not going well.
- 12:56So unfortunate for Kevin on there the Orioles curious to see what happens next.
- 13:05It's kind of hard to come back from that, I feel like from
- 13:07the Orioles ownership perspective to come back and let him announce in the future.
- 13:15Yeah, I don't know, how how do you think they unwind it?
- 13:18Like I've been trying to think through that scenario in my head today, is
- 13:22how on earth do they even bring him back and like take the l on
- 13:26this than that clearly in the public, like everyone loves Kevin Brown. Like
- 13:33in terms of watching MLB TV, I've always prioritized Orioles broadcast because of Kevin
- 13:39Brown. He's insightful, he's got a great voice, he's got a great
- 13:41cadence, and on top of it all, like Orioles fans last night,
- 13:46we're chanting to free Kevin Brown, and the Orioles broadcast was ignoring it,
- 13:50and like on top of it with it is that like Kevin Brown's also really
- 13:56well respected, like amongst all the other broadcasters, and Benetti from the Socks
- 14:01has been tweeting lots of supportive stuff and said supportive stuff about Kevin Brown.
- 14:05One of my favorite tweets about it is from Meg Rally, the managing editor
- 14:11at Fangrass. She tweeted yesterday, I guess two days ago on Monday might
- 14:16have been a strategic error to suspend a well liked member of a profession whose
- 14:20denzians broadcast their thoughts to a big audience for two and a half at hours
- 14:24every day. I don't know, and so like I think that sums it
- 14:28up perfectly It's like all this is doing is dragging the Orioles through the mud,
- 14:33making people remember how terrible that tank was, when they should be all
- 14:37focusing on this fratastic team with their dong bong that's rolling through the al least
- 14:45like it's a hot knife through butter. You know, Like that is the
- 14:48shift in the direction of like where people are looking at this Oriols team and
- 14:54what they're going to be focused on for the next couple of weeks has just
- 14:56been totally thrown out of whack because of what the Angelis is wanting to do
- 15:03here. I mean, I'm about ready to see the announcement that Dan Snyder
- 15:07picked up the Orioles after dismissal from the NFL. But I mean, if
- 15:11you look at the management, I say, the ownership of the team,
- 15:15they remain without release for Camden Yards after the season. They're now suspended,
- 15:22to your point of beloved announcer, And I don't know how they come back
- 15:24from this, right I don't. I would just be surprised if he wants
- 15:28to come but come back to announce. The only way I see this is
- 15:31they have to crawl and apologize going back. I mean, they have to
- 15:37own their mistake and that it was they took something out of context and didn't
- 15:41have all the information and acted too swiftly. If unless the only thing you
- 15:48do is following your own sword here and prop the guy back up and say
- 15:50that we made a mistake. And I don't see them doing that. I
- 15:54do not see them admitting to that. So it I almost think at this
- 15:58point that tells you the Orioles team is performing in spite of the ownership and
- 16:07the leadership of that team, not because of the way they've they've operated.
- 16:12Man here would have been my saying. I mean, I guess that's a
- 16:15good example of like what Adley Ruschman has brought to the Orioles, because he
- 16:19is the leader of that clubhouse. And I think the Orioles have sometimes fallen
- 16:25short, like in our lifetimes, especially like thinking back to some of those
- 16:30teams of the nineties where they put Paul Merril together with Ripken and had Mike
- 16:33Mussina around, and they were really strong in the Al East, but maybe
- 16:38the Angelos Malays kind of got to them the way the Rheinstorff's get to the
- 16:44Socks nowadays, and the reason that they're pulling through this currently is Adley Rutchman
- 16:48is the buster Posey of this group and is united all of his guys again
- 16:53behind that bong dong. Maybe it's the bong dong. Maybe the bong dong
- 16:56is the the big winner here and that's the Clubhouse sat leader. And if
- 17:02I get to say bong dong more, I'm all for it. I think
- 17:07there's probably a keyword search here for the Razzble article that goes along with this
- 17:11pod. You need to make sure gets in the search engine optimization SEO for
- 17:18this one. Yeah, Bong Dong bing bong or for all the righteous Gemstones
- 17:22fans out there, the Uncle Baby Billy's Bible bonkers that he was doing this
- 17:26year of it. Yeah, I'll try to think of something. I'm not
- 17:30exactly the punniest guy, but I'll try to. You're on a roll tonight.
- 17:33I appreciate it, though you're welcome. The other thing that I figured
- 17:37we could discuss just because I think it's gonna go down is one of the
- 17:41iconic moments of the year. Was Julio Rodriguez is catched of It was a
- 17:47Fernando Tatis deep fly out that he robbed, and I'll link to the actual
- 17:53video, because I don't think I can ever do the video justice. It's
- 17:56just amazing the way that he he fakes out literally the entire crowd and Logan
- 18:03Gilbert Logan Gilbert looks really dejected. But Julio Rodriguez goes back to the wall,
- 18:08tries, goes up against the wall and looks like he misses making a
- 18:14home around robbery catch and kind of comes down looking dejected. And then everyone's
- 18:18like, oh man, he gave up the homer. And then just a
- 18:22few seconds later, after kind of sheepishly walking around, Julio flashes up the
- 18:26ball with just like a big grin on his face and does an ex motion
- 18:30for you know you're out. And I mean, I love Julio Rodriguez.
- 18:36He's just like a great entertainer. He knows his role and he's really good
- 18:41at being in the moment. I mean, anyone that watched last year's home
- 18:45run Derby and the show that he put up, as well as this year's
- 18:48home around Derby in the first round when he set the new record in Seattle,
- 18:52like, he's super young, and I think he's going to be one
- 18:55of the faces of MLB going forward. And this is just gonna, like
- 19:00be one of those moments that you're gonna see on Julio Rodriguez's highlight Rules forever,
- 19:04and honestly, it's probably destined to be an SSP a super short Print
- 19:10run for his bass card next year. Yeah, I think it kind of
- 19:15rings in the new era of player in baseball that shows the emotion, right
- 19:22right. I think a few, you know, a number of years ago
- 19:23we looked at guys like Javier Baias and be like, oh man, the
- 19:27guy's just a you know, a fool. He's showing everybody up. But
- 19:30I feel like the tides are finally turned and you've got guys like Julio for
- 19:36any to tease, Juan Soto another number of other young guys. They're showing
- 19:42emotion on the field and they're having fun, and it makes the game more
- 19:47fun to watch, more fun to be a fan of it and support like
- 19:52these guys they're not it's not just about their play, it's about the personalities
- 19:56and how they sell to sell the game. So I think it's exciting to
- 19:59see the question I have for you though. I was reading up on,
- 20:03you know, kind of his comments on this this catch, and I want
- 20:06to call a little b us on him here. He said that he did
- 20:10not did not know what he was doing. He thought He said that he
- 20:14believed everybody knew he caught the ball and that he was just kind of walking
- 20:18then and then when he realized that everybody didn't know, he just kind of
- 20:22showed showed everybody. Are you buying this? No, not at all,
- 20:26Like this is There's no way you can watch that video and not think that
- 20:29like it was on purpose, like he's I mean, this just goes to
- 20:33him, I think, being a great entertainer, it's like an almost like
- 20:37a professional wrestling he will sort of moved to like also pushing the narrative throughout
- 20:42the media that like, oh yeah, I didn't mean to do this on
- 20:45purpose and absolutely not, Like it really reminds me of the Randy Rosarina like
- 20:52crossing of the arms gesture, and it looks I think that Julio was trying
- 20:56to maybe like channel that a little bit and find his own signature moment and
- 21:02so uh no, I do not believe that for a single second, but
- 21:07I was looking back. He made a similar play in late June against the
- 21:11Orioles. Uh somepler thing going back, going towards left center there, leaping
- 21:15grab you know, slams against the wall. You can't quite tell he catches
- 21:19it. Second he hits stick around, he's pumping his chest, he's he's
- 21:22flinging the ball and he's all excited that that's his natural reaction. And I
- 21:29don't think he premeditated. He didn't go out there like I'm gonna rob my
- 21:32buddy Fernando Tatise and I'm gonna show him up, like no, But the
- 21:36second he landed and he knew that that was kind of this. Hey,
- 21:41everybody just wasn't quite sure if I caught or not. He was playing that
- 21:44thing up. So I'm right there with you. I you know, it
- 21:47wasn't premeditated, but he knew exactly what he was doing. I mean,
- 21:49uh, the first split second, Uh, he realized that, oh people
- 21:55don't realize it, and he just went with it. And kudos kudos to
- 21:57him. It was entertaining, it was it was the right thing to do.
- 22:02And uh, you know, Kudusta Tatis or taking him stride. I
- 22:06think he was almost a third base by the time he realized he was actually
- 22:08out in the play. So I do feel I think The biggest one that
- 22:14I feel sorry for here is Logan Gilbert. I mean that he was pitching
- 22:18a gym and for a second here his confidence is broken because he just gave
- 22:22up a homer. Frando Testis Junior and little do you know, he's just
- 22:25your center field, is just messing with the whole stadium. So, uh,
- 22:29that's that's that's tough on your teammate. He probably deserved a little razzying
- 22:33after the game. Yeah, I mean, yeah, you are. You
- 22:36are in a very very hard ass mood today between the socks and really like
- 22:41defended the picture. I mean I thought, maybe, yeah, maybe,
- 22:44like Logan's just like two series of a dude, and maybe and help him,
- 22:48you know, loot him out he's doing. But uh, yeah,
- 22:52we'll get on to the rest of our show now that we're actually gonna mix
- 22:56it up a little bit. I know that we've been using kind of the
- 23:00three act play set up. We're actually going to kind of twist together X
- 23:03two and three and go into some prospects that from the hitting side that we
- 23:08think will be getting called up here within the next few weeks, especially because
- 23:14I think there's going to be a wave of guys that come up kind of
- 23:17the way Corbyn Carroll did last year that you only need to keep your plate
- 23:21appearances under I think it's one hundred and thirty last time I checked to be
- 23:25able to be eligible for rookie status next year. And so as people are
- 23:30still kind of like massaging overall time on the roster and getting towards free agency,
- 23:38the teams will probably start calling up players just around the beginning of September,
- 23:45maybe a little bit earlier on some of these good teams. So we
- 23:48want what we want to do is go through some of those bat prospects and
- 23:52discuss what their fantacy value will be as well as what we think their card
- 23:57market will do between where stands now and where we think you'll go in the
- 24:02future with the call ups. So with that in mind, we're also going
- 24:06to cover the baseball card news right now. So I do, unfortunately have
- 24:11one correction to issue from last week. I was the one that brought up
- 24:15that Tops Chrome Cosmic Chrome would be coming out last week, but that was
- 24:18only just the pre order that came out last week on August third. That
- 24:23that was so it was on last Thursday, and it sold out immediately it's
- 24:29going to be I think, another hot set, and it's another good looking
- 24:32set. It's going to be fun for whoever can get their hands on it
- 24:36and rip some But the actual boxes if you ordered on that pre order,
- 24:41won't be coming until August thirtieth ish, depending on, of course, the
- 24:45TOPS stripping method. But if you're looking to buy it in your hobby stores,
- 24:49Tops Cosmic Chrome will be out August thirtieth, and I think we'll do
- 24:55a bigger coverage kind of as it's coming out, because I didn't get to
- 24:57rip any of it last year. But it's a beautiful set again, and
- 25:02I think it's going to do really well if you're looking for something to rip,
- 25:06if you're either an old kind of baseball card collector or somebody new,
- 25:10I think it's good just because it's going to be such a fun one to
- 25:12rip. Yeah. I think the other one that we have to call out
- 25:18actually came out today, twenty twenty two Tops Chrome Platinum Anniversary. Uh,
- 25:23and we'll reiterate twenty twenty two, not twenty twenty three Platinus Chrome Platinum Anniversary.
- 25:30The same thing last year was one of the last sets out for the
- 25:34prior year or I think probably was the last set out. Actually it wasn't
- 25:38that it wasn't which was remember Bigley came super late. Yep, that's that's
- 25:47right. So but TOPSCROWM Platinum Anniversary, it's a newer sets just started doing
- 25:55and this year's it's kind of going back to nineteen fifty three design, you
- 26:00know, with the beautiful chrome cards. You know, I was looking at
- 26:03the parallels. You know, more than two dozen different parallel types all the
- 26:08way from your ex fractors to your prison refractors, many diamond refractors. You
- 26:14have literally I think every different refractor version that they when they tossed in the
- 26:18product. The one interesting one this this year that I was I was looking,
- 26:23uh, was they have what they call a twall variation of the autos
- 26:29and I think it's uh or a blue out of ninety nine the ones that
- 26:34I've seen so far for the chrome and essentially what the twall is is kind
- 26:40of a repeating pattern of i'd say wallpaper on the back makes me think of
- 26:45the tops logo fractors and the kind of background design. But this one has
- 26:49a lot of i'd say old school baseball images in the background, so you
- 26:53got kind of the Christy Mathewson style pitcher in the background winding up you got,
- 27:00i'd say Lou garg type swing, uh pick pit pictured. Just a
- 27:04lot of old school style artwork of of ball players. And I think it's
- 27:10a real cool card and I think it's gonna, you know, probably hit
- 27:15be a pretty good hit with with the hobby, not for the collectibility,
- 27:18just because it's unique, it's it's fun, it's interesting, so something to
- 27:21keep an eye on and pick up your favorite player. Beyond that, personally,
- 27:26not not a I'm not a huge fan of the top Scrown anniversaries.
- 27:29It's not one of those that's gonna hold it really significant value. Not a
- 27:33set that since it's been around, not been around that long that people are
- 27:36consistently collecting. I'm sure there's a few guys doing their rainbows here and there,
- 27:40but uh, it's still a fun rip, still a fun product to
- 27:42look at, just not not necessarily the highest demand in the hobby marketplace.
- 27:48Yeah, and that's why I'm not gonna rattle off all would you say,
- 27:51like seventeen parallels was it? Or I was more than two dozen? I
- 27:55stopped, I stopped two dozen. Yes, it's it's it's more than two
- 27:59dozen will to such the length of the checklist, but it is quite the
- 28:03extensive, extensive group. Yeah, and but because of that, I'm yeah,
- 28:07I'm just like you. I'm not a huge fan of this set either,
- 28:10just because I did rip a little bit of the twenty twenty one Tops
- 28:15Chrome Platinum Anniversary when it came out last year, and it was fun,
- 28:19but it's not really worth its value in the rip, and I don't think
- 28:23it's going to hold its value. It reminds me a lot of some of
- 28:26the just like Strange Flare and Flear stuff that would come out that was it
- 28:33looked really nice and it's fun to rip that would come out during the late
- 28:37nineties and nearly two thousands, and a lot of the like Upper Deck stuff
- 28:41as well, that it was really fun to rip and it looked really cool
- 28:45and the card stock is thick and like just really gratifying. But you can
- 28:51get those cards like a dime a dozen for so many of those sets,
- 28:56and unless you're getting a really nice parallel or just like even some of those
- 29:02rookie cards, it didn't hold their value just because there were so many other
- 29:04rookie cards that I think the big chasers here are going to be the Wanders
- 29:10and the Julios in this set. But again I think because it's coming out
- 29:15later than everything else, and because it's not quite as iconic as like there
- 29:19their standard based cards that like, I'm not sure it's going to really hold
- 29:25up as well in the long run. Yeah, I have to agree.
- 29:27I think the other big chases Bobby Wit within this one, along with Wonder
- 29:32and Julio. So definitely some some big names and some cards will have some
- 29:37value, but overall just a fun product and I would say not much more
- 29:41if you're looking to capitalize on it. So just going with right expectations and
- 29:45it could be a fun product for you. Okay, Yeah, that's the
- 29:49wrap up of the news of the card sections. So we're gonna take a
- 29:52little break here and then we'll be back getting into our prospect backs discussion.
- 29:57Stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody to cards and Categories. We're
- 30:22going to go through some batting prospects now and focus on guys that we think
- 30:27are going to get called up here before the end of the year and get
- 30:30some playing time in the majors, and also analyze what their card market might
- 30:34do so looking at kind of where it's standing right now and where it could
- 30:38go in the future, so that we're going to look and see if there's
- 30:41any guys that we like to increase in value or you know, might even
- 30:47go down value or stay steady. So we're gonna just gonna go back and
- 30:52forth, and one of us is going to do the real life analysis kind
- 30:56of like the real life fantasy analysis, and the other one will do the
- 31:00card analysis. So I'm going to kick it off here with I mean,
- 31:04we didn't discuss any Cardinals talk in the first half, so it's time to
- 31:07get it and now get yourself ready, Jeremy. But I'm gonna go and
- 31:11start the discussion on Mason Wynn. I think it's was pretty obvious that they
- 31:18Cardinals were clearing space for Mason Winn to come up when they shift Paul DeYoung
- 31:22out to Toronto. And honestly, Mason Winn probably would be up by now
- 31:27if it hadn't been for he's currently nursing a butt strain. Yes, is
- 31:37that the official report that that guy works for the Orioles? Now, yeah,
- 31:45but yeah, it's a it's a glute strain. And so He's been
- 31:48in Triple A all year as a twenty one year old and has not played
- 31:52since the sixth now at this point, which actually he's only he must have
- 31:57only been like pulled from that because obviously in the minors that get mondays off.
- 32:02So he's only missed a couple of days, and all the information about
- 32:06the injury doesn't sound overly concerning or really serious. But he's gonna need a
- 32:13little bit of recovery time and put it back together because he's ready to hit
- 32:17the majors. I never thought I would be saying this, just because,
- 32:22especially during spring training, like Mason Wynn was disappointed he didn't make the opening
- 32:27day roster and break camp with the team, which I thought was a little
- 32:34a bit of like Hubris on his side, like maybe a little bit of
- 32:36cockiness. But all he's done is gone down in Triple A and shown everyone
- 32:40that he should have been in Paul the young spot all season. So he
- 32:44did start a little bit slow to the season, but especially as of late,
- 32:50I have been just like kind of watching this because I bring him up
- 32:52every once in a while my waiver wire waiver wire articles for suggestions because it's
- 33:00start at and I'll only like to pick him up then recently fifteen team and
- 33:04now it might be starting to get to twelve team territory because since the beginning
- 33:08of July, he's had a one sixty six WRC plus down in Triple A.
- 33:13He's got a slash line of three forty five four oh nine six ninety
- 33:16nine. That's an eleven o nine ops. So he is just annihilating the
- 33:21ball. It comes with a fourteen point two percent k right and an eight
- 33:27point seven walk rate, So he's got just a crazy eye like he's making
- 33:32contact, he's stealing bases. He has seventeen stone basses, and I think
- 33:37this is the biggest thing about him because when you would look at his ISOs
- 33:40sometimes I worry about guys with like this that are a lot of speed that
- 33:45in the minor leagues that can put up big ISOs because they just run like
- 33:52the unslick outfielders and left field and center field in the minor leagues, you
- 33:57know, well babble balls and these speeds can turn singles into doubles and doubles
- 34:01into triples. But Mason Winn has seventeen bombs in Triple A this year too,
- 34:07So his ISO that he's showing down there. The one eighty three ISO
- 34:10currently is legit, and so I think he's going to be a really big
- 34:15impact bat coming up all those I think all the the projections are blow on
- 34:22him. I think he's going to be a real big, kind of like
- 34:25two seventy two eighty hitter in the majors probably I think lower probably homers than
- 34:32you're seeing right now, maybe like it'll round out in the mid teens,
- 34:36but a chance to be thirty forty stolen bases, and he's going to be
- 34:40a really huge, fancy prospect before that. So if you've got a chance
- 34:46to acquire him and a dynasty league and somebody's dangling him, I would jump
- 34:51all over him. I think down the stretch he could come up and really
- 34:53light Saint Louis on fire because he just might be the kick in the pants
- 34:57that they need to show that they want to turn around and be competitive next
- 35:00year. Yeah. I think we were talking right right before the break about
- 35:04rookie eligibility, and you write one fifty played appearances, but it's also less
- 35:07than forty five days on the on the active roster, and so I think
- 35:10that's gonna you know, kind of a combination. So you're gonna see guys
- 35:15coming up here, you know, mid to late August, kind of getting
- 35:19that a cup of coffee and trying to see what they're made of. But
- 35:22I think you're absolutely right on on Mason Winn. He's it's just a matter
- 35:27of time before he's up there and making an impact. So I think what's
- 35:30interesting, so we'll talk about the other side of this one. As far
- 35:32as you know, you hit the fantasy points, and I think you're right
- 35:37on from a card market perspective. Mason Winn, I think has a lot
- 35:42of the pieces that we look for in a high upside prospect and the guy
- 35:46that can hold his value long term. Uh he's he's got a really good
- 35:51hitting profile. He's plays a premium position, And I think what gets kind
- 35:58of left behind in the fancy world but is actually important and very important in
- 36:01the card market is he's got a star. He's got star qualities, he's
- 36:07got he's got a crazy personality. Uh. Actually actually had an opportunity to
- 36:10meet mens Mason Winn last year myself, and he's extremely genuine guy. He's
- 36:15got the you know, the smile that will sell and he's got a rocket
- 36:20for an arm, and he will make crazy plays and so just kind of
- 36:22like we were talking about Hulu Rodriguez earlier and the kind of statement plays and
- 36:27the fun things that he does. I think Mason Wynn has a chance to
- 36:30kind of play in that that zone as well, and that that boosts the
- 36:32card market values. What I think it's really interesting with Mason Winn and when
- 36:37we talk about prospects and what their card value is going to be, we're
- 36:42usually talking about their first Bowmen cards, first Bowment papers, chromes, autos,
- 36:46those types of things. Mason Wynn, for for whatever reason, I
- 36:51have to go look. I think the Cardinals just had a few killer drafts
- 36:53that might might have driven this. But he does not have a first Bowmen
- 36:57Auto card, which is something to be said for a player that is making
- 37:01the mark that he has at this point. So what you're actually seeing the
- 37:06market, which is interesting, is a number of folks out there actually getting
- 37:10in person autos sent off to PSA authenticated in marketing as his first Bowmen Chrome
- 37:15autos, and they're selling like a first Bowmen Chrome Auto. They're seeing those
- 37:21authenticated going for two three hundred dollars on the open market right now, before
- 37:25he's even been called up, before there's even a talk of it, and
- 37:29you know his Bowmen Chrome cards is first or in that ten to fifteen dollars
- 37:34range. So I think a guy that if you want to make a quick
- 37:38investment or uh and then if you've got a chance to pick up some cards
- 37:42of his being in that big card market because the cardinals do sell very well
- 37:46from a card perspective, I think he's got a chance that he's you know,
- 37:51cards that you might be buying for five ten dollars right now the second
- 37:52he gets called up or going for twenty twenty five. There's a quick return
- 37:57on somebody like him. Now, it always comes down to how he plays
- 38:00when he gets up there, there inevitably going to take a dip unless he
- 38:06goes crazy. But what's interesting about a guy getting called up late like him,
- 38:08if he has a good month, he can kind of ride that too
- 38:13next season and kind of maintain those values because then the hype train is just
- 38:15going to go crazy. So I really like Mason Wimm from a fantasy perspective,
- 38:21from a card perspective, So loving your first your first pick here,
- 38:24and we had to get back to the Cardinals. So I really appreciate you
- 38:28give me a chance to get my soapbox out. Yeah, I knew we
- 38:30couldn't stay away for too long. And I mean, I think that's great,
- 38:35good points all across the board. And I think along with what you're
- 38:37saying about maintaining that value is that this is the type of guy that will
- 38:43sell during the winter if he does have a nice finish down the stretch.
- 38:46That the card market dips overall during the winter, and somebody like when could
- 38:52just keep things going. I think Jordan Walker did a lot this last year
- 38:57is that it was clear that Jordan Walker was getting close coming up, and
- 39:00his prices never cooled off really during the winter the way that you see across
- 39:06the board. So yeah, I'm gonna flip it back to you Brew.
- 39:08You can pick the next dude and and examine him from a fantasy slash real
- 39:15life perspective. Yeah, I'm gonna grab a guy here out of Miami,
- 39:20Xavier Edwards. And Edwards he's been a decent prospect name for a number of
- 39:24years. I think if I recall Sandy San Diego, Tampa Bay, he's
- 39:30been a few trades and he actually had a cup of coffee earlier this year,
- 39:35just for a handful of games maybe a few few weeks, and hit
- 39:37fine, but it didn't really maintain the spot. But he has been absolutely
- 39:44destroying the ball in the minor leagues. You know, if you look at
- 39:49the bar to break the major league team when in Miami, you know he's
- 39:52gonna pass guys like Brian de la Cruz, Abasil Garcia Sanchez, not the
- 39:57biggest names that are really gonna gonna keep him down. So he's definitely got
- 40:00the opportunity to come up. Uh you know, this season, he's he's
- 40:05played in seventy seven games down in Triple A. He's gone thirty for thirty
- 40:10three and steel He's got a crazy twenty seven percent line drive rate, and
- 40:19uh, well, I think is most impressive for a guy that is a
- 40:22contact hitter. But historically he's been in the ten to fifteen percent strikeout right.
- 40:27He has a five percent strikeout right this year and Triple A. It's
- 40:30just incredible. Power is still gonna be light. He's you know, he's
- 40:35a ten home run type guy on a good day in Miami might actually pull
- 40:38that that down a little bit and he's been kind of a three hundred hitter
- 40:43almost wherever he's been, so you know, there's definitely some potential. But
- 40:46what really excites me since the starters July, he's sitting four thirty seven,
- 40:52albeit with a babe up of four thirty two, so like, take it
- 40:54with a grand of salt. He sit four homers. He's got fifty nine
- 40:59runs and RBIs come buying and seventeen steals in one hundred and forty five plate
- 41:02appearances. And I'm gonna challenge es unless you've looked this up, how many
- 41:07times do you think he's struck out one hundred forty five plate appearances? Uh,
- 41:12so that's since July. If he's got a five percent, I mean,
- 41:16but he's hot too. Oh okay, that not I oversold that seven
- 41:22strikeouts since Angels. Still, it's that's incredible, And so I think he's
- 41:30uh, he's always been a really toolsy prospect and got a lot of potential,
- 41:34and it's just a matter. It's like, is he can recognize it.
- 41:37You know, he's twenty four now, so there's not much point holding
- 41:39him back down. I don't believe he is on the forty man yet.
- 41:45So they have to make uh some move there. I could be wrong on
- 41:47that one, but I don't recall him being being on the well, I'm
- 41:52sorry, he is on the forty banks. They can call him up briefly
- 41:53earlier this year. So correction on that one. We'll just delete that on
- 41:58the pod. But but yeah, I think Vier Edwards is really exciting and
- 42:02he's going to be available in a lot of leagues. I don't think,
- 42:06you know, he doesn't have that prospect type like the twenty one year old
- 42:07coming up like a Mason Win. So I think he's an exciting and fantasy
- 42:12prospect. Yeah, And honestly, he's just one more Jazz Chisholm injury away
- 42:16from probably getting that center field job for the rest of the season. So
- 42:21gona take like two two three days like that just shows him seems like he's
- 42:23hurt every other day. Yeah, Xavier Edwards has the positional flexibility. You
- 42:29played center and second base, so that's really nice. I heat to a
- 42:32brisker bubble though that I think compared to everyone we're going to talk about today,
- 42:37that Xavier Edwards is card markets easily the worst of all these guys that
- 42:43bouncing from San Diego to Tampa in the infamous Slaptic Prospect trade when Blake Snell
- 42:52was on the Twitch stream and saw that the race picked him up and called
- 42:58him mister slap dick prospect. That the market for any prospect that is moving
- 43:06between my our league systems like that, especially between like the worst card markets
- 43:12between Tampa and Miami, Like those teams just don't sell well. And San
- 43:15Diego does all right, but like it's usually because it's like Tatis and you
- 43:20know, guys who are really really just popular as well as like Xavier Edwards
- 43:24doesn't probably have like the just the the charisma that Win does that we were
- 43:31talking about. I mean, the only way that I could see that changing
- 43:35is like if he does maybe start signing some cards as mister slap Dick,
- 43:38that would be really great for him. That might boost the things a little
- 43:42bit. But the card that we're looking at here for Xavier Edwards is the
- 43:46twenty twenty Bowman card. That's where his first is at. But you can
- 43:51get his bass auto for roughly twenty to thirty bucks. It looks like maybe
- 43:58even as low as like fifteen on a good day for you. But I
- 44:02like looking at the refractors, those are of four ninety nine and they have
- 44:06the refractor furnish on them, but even those are going somewhere between thirty to
- 44:10fifty and psa tens on like the base or in the seventy five to eighty
- 44:16range. So if you want to get into collecting Xavier Edwards and hoping maybe
- 44:22he like picks up a stolen base title or becomes a story whereas down down
- 44:27the line, I mean, I think there might be a little bit of
- 44:30helium to the prices, but not much. I mean, I think it's
- 44:35capped about as far as it can go right now, and it's going to
- 44:37take a really huge leap forward in his game to find something different as well
- 44:43as like this type of guy just doesn't really hold value too well. That
- 44:47like, I could totally see Zaviy Edwards coming up and making a big fancy
- 44:52impact for people in dynasty leagues, especially next year, Like he could easily
- 44:58make it to the Marlins roster and have a season like Estuary Reeves had this
- 45:01year in terms of you know, swiping you know somewhere I don't even know,
- 45:07like the way the stolen bases work, like the sky's almost limit and
- 45:12so yeah, like I said, I hate to burst your bubble, but
- 45:15Xavier Edwards that the guys that we talked about and I would be throwing my
- 45:19dollars into for collecting is the last guy that I want to look at.
- 45:23Yeah, I think the only path he really has to card V value relevance
- 45:29is I'm gonna call it the Randy Rose Arena path. Is you know a
- 45:32guy that switched teams really didn't have a whole lot of prospect following, and
- 45:37you could pick you know, his cards up for a dime a dozen type
- 45:40of thing, and then if he gets hot at the right time on the
- 45:44right stage, there's going to be this giant peak and then it's gonna drop
- 45:47off real fast. So you know, he's not the cards I'd go,
- 45:52well, you know, actually getting looking to get rid of If you can
- 45:54pick up a big lot for cheap, it might be a you know,
- 45:58a better gambled in Vegas, but I wouldn't be spending a whole lot of
- 46:02time on his card market to your points. So I'm right there with you.
- 46:07Who Who's who's your next guy? Who do you want to hit next?
- 46:09So yeah, I'm going to the other side of the cardinals rival I'm
- 46:14going to discuss PCA Pete crow Armstrong from the Cubs. So he was recently
- 46:19called up to triple A on August first, he had been down Double A
- 46:23and was showing that he belonged somewhere higher because he's a twenty one year old
- 46:30right now. Even with that, he was crushing in Double A with a
- 46:34two eighty nine, three seventy one five twenty seven slug which is impressive considering
- 46:37he's a glove first prospect. All that work is good for one thirty four
- 46:43w RC plus down double A, and his main calling card is speed.
- 46:47He put up twenty seven steals down there. The other thing that I love
- 46:51about him is this is very off tangent and not relevant to anything except for
- 46:57nineties baseball movie lovers, is that his mom is the is the mom in
- 47:02Little big League. So Bill Haywood's mom in Little big League is his mom.
- 47:07He went to the same high school as Lucas Glito and Jack Flaherty.
- 47:10He's from LA so he's got a little bit that that Hollywood streak in him.
- 47:16But he should be up for the Cubs this year just based for his
- 47:21glove alone. All of the prospect reports are glowing and have him slated for
- 47:27multiple gold Gloves, And the thing about him is like it's such superlative defense
- 47:34that like his floor is almost like a Kevin Kiermaier type and the ceiling can
- 47:38be beyond that because once you get a star center fielder who can put the
- 47:45bat on the ball the way that he can, and surprisingly he's like a
- 47:49spendy dude, but he hits it with a lot of authority. He had
- 47:52that two thirty eight ISO and double A and he's struggling right now in the
- 47:57bump up to triple A a little bit. He's only got on one seventy
- 47:59four three twenty one, but four seventy eight on the slash line. He's
- 48:05got two homers in six games with that's good for a three or four ISO.
- 48:09I know it's a little bit of a small sample, but like it
- 48:12shows that there's real popping this bat. So I like him long term value
- 48:16that like if you're looking for I would say that like compared to Mason Winn,
- 48:22like in his peak peak row Armstrong might not steal as many bases is
- 48:28Win, and his batting average will probably be a little bit lower because he's
- 48:30a little bit more of a power hitter, but this the Homers will probably
- 48:35be in the same range and maybe a little bit more just like slug more
- 48:38doubles and who knows what could happen in Wrigley, Like if it stays hot
- 48:43and he gets a really nice week of windy air going straight out north,
- 48:46like he could at some point pop something like a twenty thirty or twenty forty
- 48:53season. Yeah, I think the Mason Win comparison is a good one when
- 48:58we talk about the card market side of of PCA here, Uh, he's
- 49:02probably a step below Win when you when you look at that card market,
- 49:07you know, he has the penalty of being not being with the team that
- 49:09drafted him. I know it's just six games he played with the Mets before
- 49:14coming over to the Cubs, but you know, all his his cards and
- 49:17we're you know, we're talking for for Pete Crow. I think it's again
- 49:21that same uh twenty sorry, twenty twenty uh time frame as far as all
- 49:28these these moments first and you know, he's gonna be a little bit cheaper,
- 49:32he's still but he's definitely got that prospect status and he's also got that
- 49:37big market. So if you're looking at the first Chrome autos for for Pete
- 49:40Crow arm Strong, you're probably in that one hundred and fifty one hundred and
- 49:44seventy five dollars range for for one of those cards, and I would expect
- 49:46when he gets called up, that's probably gonna spike to two twenty five,
- 49:51two fifty somewhere in that range for for a week or two. Uh.
- 49:54Just everybody wanted the demand, but I think it having the different jersey will
- 50:00kind of hold that that value back a little bit. You can't pick up
- 50:04his his bass chrome first for you know, eight ten dollars. Uh,
- 50:07and that has gone up over the last i'd say year or so. That
- 50:12used to be a guy you could pick up for a dollar or two.
- 50:15And so definitely you can see uh. And I think it's probably a symptom
- 50:19of the Cubs haven't really had a hitting prospect with the pettigree for jeez,
- 50:25sometime. I can you're you're more of the sage guy to remember who that
- 50:30was. But I cannot think of a great, uh Chicago hitting prospect coming
- 50:35up in the last few few years. You have to go back to kind
- 50:38of your your Bryant's time frame to actually get another big name, and the
- 50:44card market was not what it was now what it was then. So,
- 50:47uh, pe Crow I think has some potential. Uh definitely can be there.
- 50:53And to your point on the fantasy side, I think the card side,
- 50:57he does have a nice little floor there because he says that that kind
- 51:00of Kermeyer and I love that comp type of of of career. Uh,
- 51:05They're still gonna be collectors for him because they just the love of the defense,
- 51:08the He's gonna make things look easy, He's gonna be fun to watch.
- 51:12So he's he's always gonna have a nice little floor there. Yeah,
- 51:15definitely, And I'm what set was he in did for twenty twenty Yeah,
- 51:22twenty twenty bowmen draft is where his first was. So a lot of the
- 51:28guys we've been talking today, I've been in twenty twenty bowmen or twenty twenty
- 51:30bowmen uh draft, and you know those cards look nearly identical. So yeah,
- 51:37So who's your next guy that you wanted to go over? Yeah,
- 51:40so next one I want to go over. I want to go back to
- 51:43do the Baltimore Orioles Tech. Talk about Heston Krestad. You know, Heston
- 51:49was I think the number two pick a number of years ago in the draft,
- 51:53and part of that was a sign ability. So he probably wasn't number
- 51:57two, you know, hit her in the draft by any means. He
- 52:00was, he was, he was top ten quality, but he was.
- 52:02He was picked there for sign ability for sure. But uh, you know
- 52:07he's he's had his share of struggles health wise, but you know he's he's
- 52:10coming back. He's made it. Uh, looking good in the Miners at
- 52:15the end of the day. From a fancy perspective, he's a solid bat.
- 52:19You know, he's Uh, God, I think uh he was seventeen
- 52:23nineteen or sorry, not seventeen nineteen. He goes nineteen homers across the two
- 52:29highest levels of the Miners this year, hitting three hundred at each of those
- 52:34stops. Uh. Baltimore is trying to win, and you can see them
- 52:37bringing up their their prospects. Uh, you know, starting the year with
- 52:40Gunner bringing up guys like uh. The Cows are trying to inject youth and
- 52:45excitement into that team, and I think that Curst has that the next guy
- 52:52on that list. You know, at this point, they the Orioles need
- 52:55to move away from Jorge Mateo playing center field. Kurstad's not gonna a centerfield
- 53:00He's more of a DH first basement maybe corner outfielder where he hasn't been getting
- 53:05reps this season. But you know, a guy like Austin Hayes uh could
- 53:09play some center. He's played a few games there, and so I wouldn't
- 53:13be shocked to see Mateo get the boot otherwise known as designated for assignment because
- 53:20he's he's he started hot this year and he's but he has just been dreadful
- 53:22since then. Uh, and you know, cows are even though he's got
- 53:25some prospect pedigree, since he's been called up, he really has not delivered.
- 53:30So you know, I think he's got a chance to get called up.
- 53:32He is not on the forty man at this point, so there is
- 53:36a little bit more room. But like I said, Jorge Mateo being designated
- 53:39takes care of that pretty gosh darn easily. So I think Kurstar gets called
- 53:44up. I think I'm thinking more early September as they are making that final
- 53:47push for the postseason there in the Al East, and I think, you
- 53:52know, he's going to be more average power, not not not going to
- 53:57have a whole lot of speed, but he has a potential to to be
- 54:00a two nineties on his best days and twenty to twenty five home runs at
- 54:07his peak, which there's a lot to like about that. Yeah, And
- 54:12getting to his card value, I mean, I think the guys that we
- 54:15discuss, he's probably got the hottest one, and it's giving me the hardest
- 54:19to break in and find something because he was the number two overall pick and
- 54:22then included in that Bowman Chrome or in that Bowman Draft set from twenty twenty,
- 54:29kind of like right in the prime that was released right in the prime
- 54:32of like the pandemic and everyone trying to get into baseball card collecting. So
- 54:37people have been on Curse Dad's market from the get go. So looking at
- 54:43his prices, honestly, I was looking at eBay where you go back and
- 54:46just hit sold. There hasn't been a ten of his auto sold recently.
- 54:52So that's of the chrome and of the refractor. If you're going to be
- 54:57looking for just a ungraded version of the chrome, you're looking somewhere between one
- 55:04hundred and twenty two hundred and fifty and upwards of two hundred and two fifty
- 55:08for the four hundred and ninety nine numbered refractors, so that's pretty expensive.
- 55:15And even just the bass chrome probably runs you can run you five to ten
- 55:20and any of the paper first will be pretty cheap, just because like there
- 55:24are lots of those out there. But it's not going to be Honestly,
- 55:29if I'm holding a Heston curs Dad, that is, he does autos and
- 55:32stuff, I would be selling as immediately when he gets called up, because
- 55:37I think that's probably when his value beaks. Like I think he's a solid
- 55:40bat heat but like would you even rattled off there, like three hundred twenty
- 55:45five, like it's all right, Like that's pretty good, but like it's
- 55:50not coming with a lot of stolen bases. It's not coming with a lot
- 55:52of longevity. You know, he's already twenty four because he came out of
- 55:58college, So I don't think it's somebody that's going to hold a lot of
- 56:01value going to the future that once he comes up and makes that debut.
- 56:07I'm moving as much of my Heston Curstad's dash as I can, and maybe
- 56:14you can hold and hope that like he goes and tries to get Rookie of
- 56:17the Year next year or does something momentous and like HiT's a big home run
- 56:22in the playoffs or something. But that's that's playing roulette. I think that
- 56:28the best time to sell will be when the Orioles call Heston Curstad up and
- 56:32put him in that lineup the first day. I have to fully agree with
- 56:37you on this one, and also be in the lineup with other guys like
- 56:39Adlie and Gunner and things like that. It's just even your own fan base
- 56:44that are going to view you as you know, the fourth or fifth guy
- 56:46to collect, So it's gonna hold him down. So I'm excited about him
- 56:51from a fancy perspective, probably less from a card market perspective. Yeah,
- 56:55definitely. So yeah, let's get onto the next guy, who, honestly,
- 57:00I've been the most excited about probably this year in terms of how they've
- 57:06shot through prospect rankings and shot through the minor leagues, and that is Cult
- 57:10Keith from the Detroit Tigers. So Coult Keith. I mean, I think
- 57:15the story also really starts that he looked really fantastic in the Arizona Fall League
- 57:21last year. All the prospect towns and all of the fantasy gurus that were
- 57:24down there could not stop raving about him that the contact of his bat looked
- 57:30great. He just looks like a complete hitter. And he was taken during
- 57:36the twenty twenty draft, late fifth round, and actually that was the last
- 57:42round during that COVID draft, So the Tigers really found a gem there.
- 57:45And all he's done since he's gotten into their system has just been mashing the
- 57:51ball, except for a brief stop and advanced day in twenty twenty one.
- 57:54That this year he's had a meteoric rise. As a twenty one year old.
- 58:00He just blew right through Double A. He put up a one sixty
- 58:02two w RC plus with a three twenty five, three ninety one, five
- 58:07eighty five line with fourteen bombs in two hundred and seventy six plate appearances.
- 58:14Even for like all that power, he's striking out only twenty two point eight
- 58:17percent of the time, which is you can live with, especially because he's
- 58:22walking about ten percent of the time. It was nine percent of the time
- 58:24there and it's eleven percent right now in triple A. He's taking a little
- 58:30bit of a step back, but he's a twenty one year old at triple
- 58:32A with a w ninety one or a ninety one w RC plus with a
- 58:37slash nine of two seventy three forty six, three forty two. Yeah,
- 58:44this is like I think this is the guy that the Tigers thought Tarkleson would
- 58:47be and they kind of got lucky that he just kind of fell into their
- 58:52laps as a left handed bat, which I think their lineups sorely needs going
- 58:57forward. A lot of their guys are right handed, with especially Torque and
- 59:02Riley Green, they're kind of holding it down that it would make sense that
- 59:07Colt Keith will come up and kind of be another piece to help the Tigers
- 59:10see if they can push into contention next year in the Al Central, which
- 59:15it doesn't take much. I mean, just look at those teams right now.
- 59:19So I think they're going to give him a cup of coffee just because,
- 59:22like he's proven so much. You've got to kind of show some good
- 59:24faith to some of these Tigers fans who saw that rebuild kind of fizzle out
- 59:30with the and especially just Hovey bayas his contracts up. All the oxygen now
- 59:37of the momentum they were going for. They'll have Tweak scouble back next year
- 59:40for a full year. They should have Casey Mayers back that the time is
- 59:45now, I think for Coult Keith, and I was a little surprised I
- 59:49didn't bring them up when they got rid of Jonathan Scope and made some moves
- 59:52at the deadline, especially with Condelario. But you can tell that they're trying
- 59:57to toy with his service time and it reminds me a lot of kind of
- 1:00:00what Corbyn Carroll did down the stretch last year for the Diamondbacks that I think
- 1:00:05Colt Keith in the second week of September will be up for the Tigers.
- 1:00:09Yeah. I think Colt Keith is is a really interesting player, and I
- 1:00:15think the interest, you know, goes over to the card mark as well.
- 1:00:17And to your point, the meteoric rise he's had this year, you
- 1:00:20can see it in his card prices. You know, back in in May
- 1:00:23time frame, his card prices are probably half of what they are now.
- 1:00:27You could pick up his first chromes for a dollar. Now they're going for
- 1:00:30five or six. You know, his his autos, you know, you
- 1:00:34might have been paying sixty seventy bucks to get well now they're going for almost
- 1:00:37one fifty. So you can definitely see that he's he's got that helium from
- 1:00:42from his production. Now, I do have to say that I'm only going
- 1:00:46to put him a notch above our Xavier Edwards discussion earlier. At the end
- 1:00:52of the day, Colt Keith isn't a high round draft pick. He's not
- 1:00:57the most exciting guy to watch, and you know, he has that similar
- 1:01:01profile that we just talked about with with Kirstad, where he's it's good,
- 1:01:06it's valuable from a fantasy perspective, but it's not going to light the world
- 1:01:09on fire. So and at the end of the day, the Detroit card
- 1:01:15market is not one of the hottest things out there, and so you know,
- 1:01:20he he gets called up, I expect a little spike up in his
- 1:01:22values, but because of the kind of seasons he's had, I think he's
- 1:01:28one of those that is already getting some of that that helium. There's there's
- 1:01:31some guys that have helium over time, but they're you know, high draft
- 1:01:36picks. They got this prospect profile and then when they get called up,
- 1:01:38like everybody's excited about them in their cards spike. Then you get these other
- 1:01:42guys that don't have that pedigree, but then they're getting them the news,
- 1:01:45they're they're making headlines they're they're getting popular and people are picking them up,
- 1:01:49and there's kind of ramping up before they get called up, and they just
- 1:01:52don't get that peak right at the end when they get called up, because
- 1:01:55they're already there everybody that's interested, it's already kind of grabbed them. But
- 1:02:00I uh, but they're not grabbing say, national headlines with their call up.
- 1:02:04So I don't see a whole lot changing for Colt Keith once he gets
- 1:02:07called up with his his his profile, the time to buy is already passed.
- 1:02:10It was in the spring, and long term, I don't see that
- 1:02:16his cards are going to hold a heckful lot of value. If you're a
- 1:02:20Detroit fan, probably a really good player to collect, because he's going to
- 1:02:22be reasonable, gonna be fun to watch, and you know, and he's
- 1:02:27he looks like he has a chance to really be a part out lineup for
- 1:02:29a long time. So it's great for a PC no personal collection, Uh,
- 1:02:34probably less foe if you're if you're looking to make a quick buck on
- 1:02:37on the call up. Yeah, I mean, so there is going to
- 1:02:42be one thing here I'm going to disagree with you on. I think that
- 1:02:45he probably has gotten to just about his peak on these cards. But he,
- 1:02:50I think, compared to anyone else that we're discussing here, has the
- 1:02:54chance to have a much better long term career. I think just being twenty
- 1:03:02one and how fast he got through the minors this year, and just all
- 1:03:07of the prospect reports are really glowing about him. And he's been moving from
- 1:03:13a fancy perspective too, like he's moving up into top ten dynasty lists,
- 1:03:16and there's a real good chance that he could be a big cornerstone for the
- 1:03:22Tigers going forward. So I think if like that's the path that you see
- 1:03:27charted for him, like and you see, I mean, I think this
- 1:03:30guy could be somebody who you know, hits somewhere between thirty and forty bombs
- 1:03:36a year for a decade, like in terms of sticking around and almost like
- 1:03:40a left handed Austin Riley. It reminds me a little bit of And so
- 1:03:45I think there is a chance that like long term, like his prices are
- 1:03:50where they are now and they're pretty high, but like long term, I
- 1:03:52think that could stay high or go higher, because like he's got the chance,
- 1:03:57I think, compared to some of these other dudes of just being the
- 1:04:00dude, you know, like he's got the chance of being a franchise cornerstone
- 1:04:03for the Tigers, and especially if he can lead them to like a couple
- 1:04:06of playoff runs, like he could cement himself as like kind of one of
- 1:04:11the better players as this generation. Yeah, I think that's the profile of
- 1:04:15the guy that if you think he's gonna be there long term, which I'm
- 1:04:17not sure. I'm not sure I'm in the same boat as you with with
- 1:04:20cold Keith. I think there's a lot of potential there. I'm not sure
- 1:04:23that I see it for you know, fifteen year career home runs. I
- 1:04:28think that's what I heard you say. But I think that he's the kind
- 1:04:33of guy that if he does get the cup of coffee now, it kind
- 1:04:35of breaks that that prospect seal. And then unless he just goes crazy at
- 1:04:40thin of the season, but playing Detroit, like you have to go real
- 1:04:43crazy to get the publicity, I think his market drops off in the winner
- 1:04:47and you're gonna be able to pick his cards up for you know, pennies
- 1:04:50on the dollar to what it was right now. And if you really do
- 1:04:54think he has that long term potential, that's probably the time to buy and
- 1:04:58stock it away because you know, the first All Star team he makes,
- 1:05:00the first you know week where he reels off five home runs, his value
- 1:05:04is going to spike. And then you also might be able to grab something
- 1:05:08to grade for long term, to just set away for a rainy day,
- 1:05:12So the price of the mission is probably fit there over the winter. Yeah.
- 1:05:16No, I think that's a really good point that, Like, I
- 1:05:19think that he is someone like you almost kind of like cross your fingers that
- 1:05:25he struggles a little bit in a September call up from both the fantasy and
- 1:05:28a baseball card perspective, because if his price is dropping anywhere, like I'm
- 1:05:33buying that, like if he settles back and is you know, his even
- 1:05:39just his bass crumbs, you know, if they're settling back into like the
- 1:05:42dollar and two dollar bins, like I will stop up as many of those
- 1:05:45as I can, because he's just so young and like the types of people
- 1:05:49who get to the levels and produce at the levels that he has already,
- 1:05:56like the outcomes are usually pretty good. Let's get the last guy on on
- 1:06:01my list. I think, uh, you know was the last guy in
- 1:06:04your list, and we've talked about him before on on the pod here.
- 1:06:08But Ronnie Mauricio, uh for the Mets, I think is a is a
- 1:06:14guy that I'm shocked he's not called up already, but I think that the
- 1:06:17writings on the wall here so uh, ninety eight games so far down on
- 1:06:23the farm, he's almost twenty twenty on the season. He's seventeen, nineteen
- 1:06:27someteen Homer's nineteen seals. And you know, he just got his first start
- 1:06:31of the season at third base, and I was, I was reading from
- 1:06:34one of the New York Beat writers and I am I cannot remember his name
- 1:06:39off the top of my head, but basically, you know, it became
- 1:06:43they're planning to rotate him. They're at Syracuse between second, short and third,
- 1:06:46probably twice a week at each each position, and he had not been
- 1:06:50playing third base. You know, he you know, mainly was was getting
- 1:06:55starts there at a short stop. But they're they're clearly looking to get some
- 1:06:58flexibility. And if you look at the Mets and what they have on the
- 1:07:02major league level at a third base, it's like Mark Ventos, who had
- 1:07:08a you know, really solid h Minor league go of it, but he's
- 1:07:12kind of a all or nothing power hitter and just has not produced for the
- 1:07:16Mets, So they clearly have a gap there at third, and they're probably
- 1:07:20still trying to see what they have from from Ventos, but as they look
- 1:07:25really towards the window for them being twenty four, twenty five more twenty five,
- 1:07:30I think the Mets have to give Mauricio a call up here and give
- 1:07:34them some positional flexibility. So if they do this for a few weeks,
- 1:07:38he could end up with you know, three and positions depending on your league
- 1:07:42settings for a fantasy perspective, and having a guy that can hit for power,
- 1:07:47can run a little bit. He's not gonna destroy destroy your average by
- 1:07:53any means. He's not going to be a three twenty hitters, not going
- 1:07:55to be a three hundred hitter by by any means. You know, He's
- 1:07:59probably a guy that's I would say settles in it two sixty, two seventy,
- 1:08:02somewhere in that range. But he has been, you know, very
- 1:08:08very impressive for the Mets and the Miners this year, and I think he
- 1:08:13gets called up September one, yeah, if not before, because like with
- 1:08:17Brett Batty going down this week, it's kind of clear that they want to
- 1:08:21give Mauricio a shot and see exactly maybe where he fits for next year.
- 1:08:26And I take back saying that Heston Christad was going to be the most expensive
- 1:08:30guy we're going to talk about, because I think it's actually Ronnie Mauricio,
- 1:08:33and it's mostly just this is the New York effect, like they're I don't
- 1:08:39think there's any set of teams or any area of the country that I've made
- 1:08:45more money off of from selling baseball cards than the Yankees and the Mets in
- 1:08:48New York, because I mean, it just kind of is like it's like
- 1:08:53it's like the document Ken Burns's documentary Baseball, where you're just like, what
- 1:09:00the hell can like there's baseball outside of New York and Brooklyn, and like
- 1:09:04all he does is like view it through that lens. But like, honestly,
- 1:09:09it kind of goes that way in the baseball card world too, that
- 1:09:12like Yankees and Mets prices are always ridiculous and they're the hype around the players
- 1:09:17is way outsized for how good they are, and so yeah, and even
- 1:09:25with Mauricio, it's a little bit like what you're talking about with polt Keith,
- 1:09:29that like your time to buy Mauricio has passed like during spring training and
- 1:09:33up until like May April time his base Auto Chrome which he's from the twenty
- 1:09:41nineteen Bowman Chrome set that that was only going for like forty fifty bucks raw
- 1:09:46and now it's going well past one hundred and twenty five, and like it's
- 1:09:51just skyrocketing. The day that he gets called up, like that card's gonna
- 1:09:55probably be pushed two hundred to fifty and it's gonna st there, I think,
- 1:10:00probably for a bit, just because like the way that METS hype works
- 1:10:03and kind of the way that like just hype in New York the Big Apple
- 1:10:09works overall, like it'll stay there but then like fall off a cliff,
- 1:10:14like as soon as he struggles it all or is dealt or like I don't
- 1:10:20know, like I could see Moriicio like having a good kind of long term
- 1:10:25career, but I mean he's been around since twenty eighteen in the met system
- 1:10:30and it's kind of been percolating for quite a while. Like he's twenty two
- 1:10:34and next year will be his twenty three year old season. That like I
- 1:10:39know, it sounds ridiculous that like that's a little old, but like compared
- 1:10:43to like some of these guys that we really see the ground like hit the
- 1:10:45ground running and like take off like have usually done it by the time Ronni
- 1:10:50Risio is at now. So I'm definitely staying away from Ronnie Marisio probably all
- 1:10:57the time. That like the window for buying to Ronni Mauricio has long passed
- 1:11:00and trying to sell him to Mets fans, and even if he struggles here
- 1:11:04in September, like, I think it's not going to dip enough over the
- 1:11:09offseason to ever get to a point where unless he like really goes on some
- 1:11:15sort of crazy like Rookie of the Year MVP like run, like, the
- 1:11:18prices will just kind of never be worth investing in. From a card side,
- 1:11:25Yeah, I think it's also one of those interesting guys most of the
- 1:11:27guys we talked about actually in the twenty twenty set, and he's one of
- 1:11:30the few that's from a pre COVID timeframe, and so I think there is
- 1:11:33actually a little bit of a supply difference in guys like the point. But
- 1:11:39to your point, if it was any other market, I think that would
- 1:11:42actually play to the collector's advantage. But I'd say even more of the Mets
- 1:11:46more of the Yankees. The volatility there, it's how fast they turn on
- 1:11:51their players is incredible. Unless you're David Wright, then you can do no
- 1:12:00right, I think in the big Apple there for the Mets to degree.
- 1:12:04So I'm with you there. If you have them, make sure you got
- 1:12:09them dug out. And second he gets called up, that price is going
- 1:12:12to double or triple depends on what card you're talking about there, But I
- 1:12:15can see his chromes going up to thirty dollars when you probably could pick him
- 1:12:19up for five bucks earlier this year. So I think there's definitely a market
- 1:12:23for it if you already have him. Otherwise I'm with you. I'm staying
- 1:12:29away. I'd want no part of most any investment in the Mets space from
- 1:12:32a card perspective. Yeah, next actually, and that's a good point that
- 1:12:38with the twenty nineteen set, because just to let people know in case you're
- 1:12:42not aware, like, the print runs really started increasing during twenty twenty to
- 1:12:46twenty one and beyond that as card collecting became more popular, print runs have
- 1:12:51gotten larger and larger. So twenty nineteen is really one of the last years
- 1:12:55that has a little bit more of a limited print run. And that's a
- 1:12:58really good point that like when he does debut, there's probably not even going
- 1:13:01to be enough of just the base chrome cards to like really meet the demand
- 1:13:08out there, So the supply, it will be definitely the time to move
- 1:13:11those cards. And especially if you like our collector and you had you were
- 1:13:16ripping back in twenty nineteen, it's possible like you could have some buried in
- 1:13:20boxes somewhere as you've kind of been inundated with more cards throughout COVID, and
- 1:13:27it never hurts to kind of look back through what you got and see if
- 1:13:30maybe you got any ron and your Mauricio is sitting in there. Yeah.
- 1:13:33Absolutely, I know what I'm doing after the pods tonight. I'm I got
- 1:13:36some old cards to search through and find the one Ronny Mauricio in the in
- 1:13:42the mix. Yeah, and how many more Michael Lorenzen not takes. You
- 1:13:45have to do lead off the internet? Yeah, I need to. You're
- 1:13:49right that might be the first step is get rid of all my Michael Lorenzen
- 1:13:53takes. I'm sticking to my guns. This was a flash in the pan.
- 1:13:58It was it was Babepp driven from this perspective. Yeah, and pitching
- 1:14:03ins Nationals didn't hurt either, but true. Yeah, I think that will
- 1:14:08wrap us up for this week here on cards and categories. Jeremy, thanks
- 1:14:11again for joining me and remind everybody where they can find you. Yep,
- 1:14:16I'm still not sure what we're calling things these days. So Twitter and x

- 1:14:58so looking at those streaminator to see who's coming up and has the best
- 1:15:01projections over seven games. Rudy has a really complicated algorithm that I don't understand
- 1:15:09and never will, but he's got all sorts of factors in there. In
- 1:15:12terms of you know, parks and line up positions and who's catching for pictures,
- 1:15:17and lots of factors that I think lots of other sites don't fully consider,
- 1:15:24so it's always been a great tool for me. He's in the streaminator
- 1:15:27that comes with a raz ball subscription, but also fancy football season is right
- 1:15:31around the corner. This is obviously baseball podcast, but lots of people play
