- 1:39Speaker 5: This guy is an agent for some of the biggest
- 1:41Speaker 5: talent agencies on the East Coast. He's worked with all
- 1:43Speaker 5: of them. He just returned from a one year trek
- 1:45Speaker 5: out to la where he worked with more of the
- 1:48Speaker 5: top agencies out there. This guy has been through it all.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Awesome guy, a lot of knowledge. He's now returned to Philly.
- 1:56Speaker 5: He's starting his own agency here called the VI Model
- 1:59Speaker 5: and Talent Agency. We're gonna talk all about that and
- 2:02Speaker 5: and so much more. Also about finding representation, which is
- 2:05Speaker 5: a huge question I get asked a lot about is
- 2:08Speaker 5: find representation? So I imagine this episode and the one with
- 2:11Speaker 5: Whitney Davis is going to be pretty popular, as Whitney's
- 2:14Speaker 5: episode is very popular. So without further ado, with guests
- 2:19Speaker 5: Will Ball, what's up? This is from seasons yeah, for
- 2:24Speaker 5: seasons pizza who to funk it?
- 2:26Speaker 4: Right?
- 2:26Speaker 5: So, uh, you know it's funny because I was gonna
- 2:29Speaker 5: order Chinese or pizza, and I was like, let me,
- 2:30Speaker 5: let me tear toward some cheese steaks.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Let me just see how.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Because again you're over in Philadelphia, and if you don't
- 2:38Speaker 5: actually have a good cheese steak, you get beaten savage
- 2:41Speaker 5: only out in the parking lot. Should yeah, seriously, but
- 2:46Speaker 5: you know, uh, you know it's funny having you on
- 2:48Speaker 5: the show, Will because again I had Crispy on two
- 2:50Speaker 5: episodes ago.
- 2:51Speaker 4: This is episode one fifty two.
- 2:52Speaker 6: Yeah, and real quick, someone like here correctly, because let's
- 2:57Speaker 6: listen to the Crispy podcast.
- 2:59Speaker 4: One of your guests like murdered Someboddy.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Er oh oh oh it was Dan Mervish and the
- 3:05Speaker 5: guy he was taught uh filmmaking by at u USC.
- 3:08Speaker 4: He murdered his family.
- 3:10Speaker 6: Okay, okay, So it wasn't an actual because it was
- 3:13Speaker 6: at the beginning and I was I was kind of
- 3:14Speaker 6: doing some at the same time, so I wasn't like
- 3:17Speaker 6: I was like eighty percent listing, yeah, and.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I just heard it. I was like, wait, what both
- 3:20Speaker 4: his guests killed somebody? Damn these confessions of a serial
- 3:24Speaker 4: kill all other dayble to deliver his manifesto your body, I.
- 3:29Speaker 5: Was the police are just out here beating the crap
- 3:33Speaker 5: out of me because but no, he he his teacher.
- 3:37Speaker 5: But basically what happened was a concise story of this
- 3:39Speaker 5: was his name was crazy as Ease, and they called
- 3:41Speaker 5: him that because he was kind of like always outlandish.
- 3:44Speaker 5: And third, you know what happened was one day they
- 3:48Speaker 5: called him in the office and they said there's a
- 3:49Speaker 5: camera missing and we didn't know who took it, and
- 3:52Speaker 5: he said, I don't know. He got fired from from
- 3:54Speaker 5: that from USC.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Okay. His wife then announced that she was leaving.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Him, and it kind of snapped and he killed them
- 4:01Speaker 5: both and then drove away and shot himself in the head.
- 4:04Speaker 5: But they but they didn't know he was dead yet
- 4:06Speaker 5: because he just vanished, Okay. So they had USC on lockdown,
- 4:10Speaker 5: uh they so they basically, yeah, they had to. You know, basically,
- 4:12Speaker 5: everyone was scared to death because there is he gonna
- 4:14Speaker 5: come because he he apparently had vendettas against certain people,
- 4:18Speaker 5: so maybere like oh ship.
- 4:19Speaker 4: So but yeah, no, no serial killers left yet Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 4: well I see see what happens after this?
- 4:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, seriously, Crispy, who knows he could be crazy
- 4:28Speaker 5: because it's because he's not the guys like me, because
- 4:30Speaker 5: it's always the guys who were like, he's so nice
- 4:32Speaker 5: and sweet.
- 4:33Speaker 4: He was just if you're on the news, you're like,
- 4:36Speaker 4: I would have never thought it was never that guy.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Yeah, and just be like, Crispy did that out of nowhere?
- 4:44Speaker 4: Fair enough? Fair enough? Oh okay, we.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Say we said, no, no, no problem, it's it's good to
- 4:50Speaker 5: talk about that.
- 4:50Speaker 4: And that's that's episode damn right for Crispy.
- 4:54Speaker 5: And so what happened was, uh, you know, we've actually
- 4:57Speaker 5: known each other since what middle school?
- 4:59Speaker 4: I said, So yeah about that, okay, because I don't
- 5:01Speaker 4: remember how I met Crispy. Do you remember how we met?
- 5:04Speaker 5: Because I because Crispy thinks that we met at lunch
- 5:06Speaker 5: one day and I said, Crispy, it's just a weird
- 5:09Speaker 5: way to meet somebody at lunch, Like, what.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Especially in the middle, how do you do that? Yeah? No,
- 5:18Speaker 4: I'm that's confusing. I don't actually, to be honest with that,
- 5:21Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 5:22Speaker 6: I know you were a great above me, So there's
- 5:24Speaker 6: always that kind of like distance that people have. I
- 5:27Speaker 6: mean it's like, yeah, you're in the same school, but
- 5:29Speaker 6: like you're just like years apart, because even though it
- 5:32Speaker 6: just one But yeah, no, I really don't remember. I
- 5:35Speaker 6: just I think it's just kind of came to be.
- 5:36Speaker 6: And then I think in college we had reconnected because
- 5:39Speaker 6: you had reached out to me about a film or
- 5:41Speaker 6: something like that, and then then we're just kind of
- 5:43Speaker 6: got more involved from there.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I do remember that.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I remember that because I also remember, Yeah, I was
- 5:49Speaker 5: trying to think of this stuff too, because I'm like, damn,
- 5:51Speaker 5: it's been so I mean, would he graduated in high
- 5:53Speaker 5: school about fifty years ago?
- 5:54Speaker 4: About that we're about seventy years old now, it feels
- 5:58Speaker 4: like it. And now I'm just like, how did I
- 5:59Speaker 4: know these guys?
- 6:00Speaker 5: Yeah, because but you never know that like certain friends,
- 6:04Speaker 5: I know, I know exactly where I met them at
- 6:07Speaker 5: other people I'm just like.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Actually, I don't remember where I me at Crispy though,
- 6:10Speaker 4: I mean Chrispy tell us about it.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Actually at a party, like a mutual friends party, and uh,
- 6:16Speaker 6: I think we're just playing We're playing some DOS game
- 6:18Speaker 6: on the computer and oh yeah, yeah, I I don't
- 6:22Speaker 6: there was no really, I mean that's it really wasn't
- 6:24Speaker 6: that like a Frank film or no, no, I really
- 6:28Speaker 6: wasn't that that exciting.
- 6:30Speaker 4: But yeah, because and then after that, I was like, hey,
- 6:32Speaker 4: will you want to be my films?
- 6:33Speaker 6: And then which obviously I was happy to do and
- 6:35Speaker 6: then and still am but uh yeah, yeah, like that's yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 6: I got it.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Sorry, sorry about nowhere? Stay with nowhere? Well, well that's
- 6:44Speaker 4: a that's a sign of what's going to have with
- 6:46Speaker 4: the podcast. Oh you got you got another fifteen minutes
- 6:49Speaker 4: of stories that go nowhere.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Now everyone's gonna stop right now and just be like, well,
- 6:54Speaker 5: this is the end of this podcast. Oh man, it's uh,
- 6:57Speaker 5: you know, it's just crazy though, because you know, so
- 7:00Speaker 5: when you were making all those films of Chrispy, why
- 7:02Speaker 5: did he did he select you because of your look
- 7:05Speaker 5: or because you guys were friends because you knew something
- 7:07Speaker 5: about filmmaking or I think we were friends?
- 7:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I meanbe that was first and foremost. And then
- 7:11Speaker 6: I think, you know, he was trying to make a
- 7:13Speaker 6: more spiritual film, and at the time, I was, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 6: uh more into that. Obviously I'm not now, but you know,
- 7:20Speaker 6: at the time, uh, but yeah, and you know, and
- 7:24Speaker 6: it was happy to do it. I mean, this is like,
- 7:25Speaker 6: you know, I really want to be involved in the
- 7:27Speaker 6: film at any capacity, and I was wanted to explore
- 7:29Speaker 6: more acting. So you know the fact that there's someone
- 7:32Speaker 6: in my backyard who was shooting the films, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 6: it was awesome.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Leg I was. I was super happy to do it.
- 7:36Speaker 6: And yeah, yeah, and got to pretend to make out
- 7:40Speaker 6: with people, so like all right, even better?
- 7:41Speaker 4: Really? Oh wow?
- 7:44Speaker 5: So because I know, I know Chrispy was like put
- 7:47Speaker 5: a lot of friends. He asked me to be in one, okay,
- 7:49Speaker 5: and I feel it was it was one of them.
- 7:51Speaker 5: And he kept like cancel moment at the last minute,
- 7:54Speaker 5: and I kept like with it four times and I said, Chris,
- 7:57Speaker 5: I said, you're you're a righte stuff guy. But I said,
- 7:59Speaker 5: I can't just put more time into this, so I
- 8:01Speaker 5: just I just kind of That's where Chrispy I stopped
- 8:03Speaker 5: talking for like a year now because we're mad at
- 8:04Speaker 5: each other, but just because you know, we were just
- 8:07Speaker 5: yeah exactly just doing different things, you know, and then
- 8:10Speaker 5: we reconnected and I ran in him to one day
- 8:13Speaker 5: at the gym and yeah at the gym, Yeah, we
- 8:18Speaker 5: were in the shower room together.
- 8:19Speaker 4: No no, no, no, no no.
- 8:20Speaker 5: At the gym, I actually used to be in shape.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And I'm dead serious about that.
- 8:25Speaker 5: I actually used to be in shape, and then Crispy,
- 8:27Speaker 5: I think, was getting back into shape at that time.
- 8:29Speaker 4: This is when we were in our sixties. So yeah,
- 8:32Speaker 4: now I'm gonna say you no surprises, like you're the gym.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I'm just surprised.
- 8:36Speaker 6: I've never I've never mentioned Christy at the gym, not Crispy,
- 8:39Speaker 6: no effect to say. I just didn't want to picture
- 8:41Speaker 6: him as a gym rat.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Do you know who Crispy's old gym buddy was? Uh no, no,
- 8:47Speaker 4: Kevin Coleman. Oh g Coleman.
- 8:52Speaker 6: And I read the other day, and I know it's
- 8:55Speaker 6: just not interesting that any but it's like this was Coleman.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Oh, actually living with my old roommate right now Smorrow.
- 9:02Speaker 6: No no, no, with with Matt con Cannon, with with
- 9:06Speaker 6: Matty Moosse who I live into the media. Oh okay,
- 9:08Speaker 6: he's in the media with them, and Matt is just
- 9:12Speaker 6: he's like he's die the stories that he tells about Coleman,
- 9:14Speaker 6: like he cracks himself up and cracks everyone else, like Coleman,
- 9:18Speaker 6: because there's like two Coleman. There's like silver Coleman and
- 9:20Speaker 6: drunk Coleman and a very two different people and very so,
- 9:25Speaker 6: very very nice people. I have nothing bad as say
- 9:27Speaker 6: about Coleman. He's a great guy, just very very funny.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Did I ever say about the time I had the
- 9:32Speaker 5: almost choked Coleman out in the middle of a bar
- 9:34Speaker 5: on Christmas Eve?
- 9:35Speaker 4: A true story?
- 9:36Speaker 5: He comb We were with Wis bar Dexters. It used
- 9:39Speaker 5: to be up here on the five and in Lovely Asston, Pennsylvania.
- 9:42Speaker 5: So so what happened was Coleman was drunk one Christmas
- 9:45Speaker 5: Eve in a bar and he won Christmas Eve. It
- 9:50Speaker 5: was a snow who knows actually Christmas Eve and Eddie
- 9:52Speaker 5: actually uh started picking a fight with a friend of
- 9:55Speaker 5: mine because he thought my friend was kept egging him on.
- 9:58Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 10:05Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 10:08Speaker 5: My friend didn't even say anything, and Coleman just went ballistic.
- 10:11Speaker 5: So I just went like in between him. I was
- 10:12Speaker 5: that Coleman just calmed down and he just went bustic,
- 10:16Speaker 5: and I was like and he started trying to grab me,
- 10:18Speaker 5: and I'm like, oh, should I pushed him. I mean,
- 10:20Speaker 5: I'm a lot bigger than Coleman is. So I just
- 10:21Speaker 5: like chucked it with them against the wall and we
- 10:23Speaker 5: and I hit another person on the way back, so
- 10:26Speaker 5: the three of us in the wall. And then I
- 10:28Speaker 5: just kind of like put my elbow or my forum
- 10:31Speaker 5: into his into his neck, and I got my hand
- 10:33Speaker 5: on the back of his head and I was kind
- 10:34Speaker 5: of like doing this, and I was like, Coleman, calm
- 10:37Speaker 5: the fuck down, and he just was getting angry and angry.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I'm like, now I have to put more and more
- 10:42Speaker 5: pressure on him. So finally he starts like he can't reach.
- 10:44Speaker 5: So I'm starting to like he's starting to go down,
- 10:46Speaker 5: and we get him out of the door. I didn't choke
- 10:48Speaker 5: him out anything, but like I said.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Like fourfully, like, hey, we need to get out here.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I was a calm I'm not gonna let him
- 10:54Speaker 5: go if he's not gonna be calm, you know. And
- 10:57Speaker 5: we got him outside and he just like, oh, I'm
- 11:00Speaker 5: sucking ask I'm like, Jesus, how much has this kid
- 11:03Speaker 5: had the drake? Sweet Lord God? And I mean, oh
- 11:08Speaker 5: my god. But yeah, but finally he ended up giving
- 11:11Speaker 5: the credit card to somebody else, and they came in
- 11:13Speaker 5: and pay for all his stuff. The owner of the
- 11:15Speaker 5: bar wanted to call the cops, and I'm like and
- 11:17Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm like, well he knew me. So he goes,
- 11:20Speaker 5: so what happened and somebody out here fighting? Well I said, yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 5: I said, he was just calming that kid. He goes
- 11:25Speaker 5: all right, well, I say, he's out of here. I said,
- 11:27Speaker 5: you know, we're sorry about everything. So he goes, all right, Well,
- 11:29Speaker 5: you know I won't do any cold cops or anything.
- 11:31Speaker 6: So, you know, speaking of a bar fights, can I
- 11:34Speaker 6: tell a crazy l a story?
- 11:36Speaker 4: Go for it, man, bunny.
- 11:38Speaker 6: So so when I was in La, it was like
- 11:41Speaker 6: the week I had moved to La, a friend of
- 11:44Speaker 6: mine was like, hey, well let's go to this Armenian
- 11:46Speaker 6: bar in north North Hollywood. So I'm like, all right, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 6: why not let's go. So well, pretty sure to start
- 11:53Speaker 6: off with like the bar elsewhere, and then I was like, hey,
- 11:54Speaker 6: this is our media bar. Now the street, let's you know,
- 11:56Speaker 6: let's stumble into what have you. So we're there and uh,
- 12:01Speaker 6: and there's this these two. This is a short Armenian dude,
- 12:04Speaker 6: and it's really tall Armenian chick and they're talking to
- 12:07Speaker 6: each other and then they like just like ran into
- 12:09Speaker 6: each each other and they're kind of ribbing each other
- 12:11Speaker 6: like joking around, and they're starting to like, hey, like
- 12:13Speaker 6: you're so tall, you're so short, you're you know, making
- 12:17Speaker 6: and kind of what. Yeah, it's like and I'm just
- 12:18Speaker 6: sitting here drinking, just looking at what's going on, and
- 12:21Speaker 6: you can see it like it's starting to just like
- 12:23Speaker 6: get meaner. Like it's like they're like the it crossed
- 12:26Speaker 6: the line from like being just friendly and joking to
- 12:29Speaker 6: just like it started to get like really kind of insulting,
- 12:32Speaker 6: and they start to like get really like mean jabs
- 12:34Speaker 6: at each other.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Like Crispy and Matt Kelly exactly, that wasn't joking at something,
- 12:40Speaker 4: you hurt feeling so so clearly.
- 12:45Speaker 6: So then the smaller Armenian guy, he says something that
- 12:48Speaker 6: like crosses a line and she talks the LOOTI and
- 12:52Speaker 6: spits on him and we're like.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Oh damn, like like and he had to spit down.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I had to spit down right, Like it
- 12:57Speaker 6: walks away right like, oh ship like what I have? Right, So,
- 13:00Speaker 6: like everyone's drinking and it's coming around like two o'clock
- 13:02Speaker 6: in the morning, so the bar's better close.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Well, he just got this look on his face. He
- 13:05Speaker 4: goes back up to.
- 13:06Speaker 6: That Armenian chick and spits in her face and were
- 13:09Speaker 6: like oh shit, and this and all of a sudden,
- 13:11Speaker 6: like there's like Armenian like bar fight starts breaking out
- 13:15Speaker 6: and the bouncers just like what the fuck. And my
- 13:17Speaker 6: friend she was very much like, oh you, Darren, don't
- 13:20Speaker 6: spit in like a woman's face. And then the bouncer
- 13:23Speaker 6: was like about to beat the shit out of this guy.
- 13:24Speaker 6: And I'm like, yo, dude, listen, I'm gonna tell you
- 13:26Speaker 6: something like I don't believe that you should spit in
- 13:29Speaker 6: anyone's face.
- 13:30Speaker 4: You know, man or male or female.
- 13:32Speaker 6: But like she's spitting his face first, and I'm not saying,
- 13:36Speaker 6: like what he should have spit back, but I'm just
- 13:37Speaker 6: saying it wasn't just like out of the blue, like
- 13:39Speaker 6: like he just hocked a look in some chick's face,
- 13:41Speaker 6: like and he was like, okay, cool, Well I'll just
- 13:43Speaker 6: let it go, like let I'll kick him out of
- 13:45Speaker 6: the bar and that'll be it. I won't beat anyone's ass.
- 13:46Speaker 6: So I'm like, oh damn, and I was like like, now,
- 13:49Speaker 6: welcome to La.
- 13:50Speaker 5: Jesus man, we'll ball stop in bar fights.
- 13:54Speaker 4: No, I just stop it. I was watching popcorn.
- 14:00Speaker 5: So I want to talk about you going to LA,
- 14:01Speaker 5: but I just want to go back a few steps. No, no, no,
- 14:04Speaker 5: it's a problem because I want to actually ask, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 5: right out of high school you went to college, how
- 14:08Speaker 5: did you end up getting into this whole agency field man,
- 14:11Speaker 5: Because I, you know, I just it seems like harder
- 14:13Speaker 5: to me to get into that because it's a very
- 14:15Speaker 5: niche you know what I mean. So I want to
- 14:16Speaker 5: ask you how did you find yourself actually as an
- 14:20Speaker 5: agent for all these you know, actresses and models and
- 14:22Speaker 5: stuff like that.
- 14:23Speaker 6: So when I was in college, I went to school
- 14:26Speaker 6: for a film and in my first few years of film,
- 14:28Speaker 6: I just, I don't know, early years of college, I
- 14:30Speaker 6: just knew that I didn't really want to be there
- 14:34Speaker 6: or I wasn't quite sure why I was there. And
- 14:36Speaker 6: I had heard someone else talk about having similar feelings,
- 14:39Speaker 6: and they suggested take a semester off, just do what
- 14:41Speaker 6: you want to do, like if you want to do
- 14:42Speaker 6: something else. And at the time, I really wanted to
- 14:43Speaker 6: be an actor and I really wanted to explore the
- 14:45Speaker 6: acting industry, like just just just take it off. Still
- 14:49Speaker 6: to this day, I will give the same advice to
- 14:51Speaker 6: anyone who's like in college and not liking it or
- 14:53Speaker 6: just not feeling it, just walk away and come back.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Like I was able to. I took a semester off,
- 14:58Speaker 4: I pursued acting. I was able.
- 14:59Speaker 6: I got like in a commercial, I got like some
- 15:01Speaker 6: small print ads things like that, and it was great.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I learned a lot.
- 15:05Speaker 6: And then that's that's six months. And then afterwards I thought,
- 15:08Speaker 6: you know, okay, it's time for me to go back
- 15:09Speaker 6: to school. I was ready to go back to school,
- 15:11Speaker 6: but I went instead for broadcasting and communications and it's
- 15:14Speaker 6: a little more viable. I mean, the thing about film schools,
- 15:16Speaker 6: you really don't have to go to film school in
- 15:18Speaker 6: order to make film. Like honestly, I would recommend instead
- 15:21Speaker 6: of take that tu wition money and invest in just
- 15:23Speaker 6: equipment and books and your own film and like save
- 15:26Speaker 6: yourself and then you want to have loans that way,
- 15:29Speaker 6: And just seriously, men, it doesn't make sense to go
- 15:32Speaker 6: to the film school for film. And I kind of
- 15:34Speaker 6: saw that as in the class, like I'm in the
- 15:36Speaker 6: class with just like thirty people and this is just
- 15:38Speaker 6: one class, Like we're not all going to be successful, like,
- 15:41Speaker 6: and there's only so few jobs here, Like the best
- 15:44Speaker 6: I can hope is to be a PA. So like,
- 15:46Speaker 6: I gotta find a way to you know, be realistic.
- 15:49Speaker 6: And I'm not saying don't pursue your teams, but like
- 15:51Speaker 6: you gotta be realistic.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 15:53Speaker 6: So so then I went back to college and an internship.
- 15:56Speaker 6: And I took an internship in an acy here in Philadelphia,
- 16:00Speaker 6: and uh, and it was called Expressions and the wonderful
- 16:04Speaker 6: Rereer Lang.
- 16:04Speaker 4: She's an agent. She's uh, she's.
- 16:06Speaker 6: Older now, but she's been an agent in Philly for
- 16:09Speaker 6: god decades and learned everything. I learned a lot from her,
- 16:12Speaker 6: and she's really good and she generally it's all these
- 16:14Speaker 6: people that just loves being an agent and just it
- 16:16Speaker 6: is what she does. Like she's this older woman. She
- 16:18Speaker 6: gets on the train every day and rides the subway
- 16:20Speaker 6: to work, like you know, she's so dedicated and that's
- 16:23Speaker 6: what she does. So really kind of fell in love
- 16:26Speaker 6: there and it kind of I just really really like
- 16:28Speaker 6: being behind the camera is as much as I did
- 16:31Speaker 6: in front of the camera, because it's very much like,
- 16:33Speaker 6: the best part of my job is sharing in my
- 16:36Speaker 6: talent success.
- 16:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I love calling up talent and being.
- 16:39Speaker 6: Like, hey, listen, like you just booked this job and
- 16:41Speaker 6: they're just a static and they're just beyond you know, happy,
- 16:44Speaker 6: and and this is for me, I don't. I really
- 16:46Speaker 6: liked that feeling, and I really it's just it's what
- 16:49Speaker 6: drives me to do this. I was the best part
- 16:50Speaker 6: of my job for sure. And so then after that,
- 16:53Speaker 6: then I got picked up by another ETENCA who was
- 16:55Speaker 6: opening up in Philadelphia and worked there for five years,
- 16:59Speaker 6: got to know what really the client base here and
- 17:00Speaker 6: if l even more.
- 17:02Speaker 4: And then after that that's when I went out till
- 17:03Speaker 4: I like.
- 17:04Speaker 5: And so just sort of to take a couple of
- 17:06Speaker 5: steps back. Sure, I always have to talk about college.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I always talk about you know, film school and this
- 17:11Speaker 5: and that. That's something too that I just as I
- 17:15Speaker 5: keep talking to more and more people from this podcast.
- 17:18Speaker 5: That's one thing is to not everyone's going to succeed,
- 17:21Speaker 5: whether it be screenwriting or directing or whatever. The other
- 17:24Speaker 5: thing is, do you really need to go to make
- 17:26Speaker 5: a film? I say no. I mean I'm a big advocate.
- 17:29Speaker 4: You know.
- 17:30Speaker 5: People always ask me about film and going to college
- 17:32Speaker 5: or whatever. I'm actually the guy that talks you out
- 17:34Speaker 5: of calling him in the film industry. And I'm also
- 17:36Speaker 5: the guy tells you to quit college and never go
- 17:38Speaker 5: there to begin with, because because I to me colleges.
- 17:42Speaker 4: It's the more I experience.
- 17:44Speaker 5: People with degrees, you know, I talk to them, and
- 17:48Speaker 5: more experience talking to people with who have these degrees
- 17:50Speaker 5: and they have a degree in like business like me
- 17:53Speaker 5: or something like you know, chemical engineering, and it's like,
- 17:55Speaker 5: we don't even do go do anything in that field,
- 17:58Speaker 5: And it was like, what was the point of that.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I think that if we did more of like a
- 18:03Speaker 5: mentorship here where it's like, you know, you gotta even
- 18:07Speaker 5: if you're in high school and you take a gap year,
- 18:10Speaker 5: go go work in the film industry because you can
- 18:12Speaker 5: find ten cold chillion independent films going on every day
- 18:16Speaker 5: in this country, and you know, or even though of
- 18:19Speaker 5: the world, find out if this is what you want
- 18:21Speaker 5: to do, a lot of actresses, I mean, and I
- 18:24Speaker 5: want to ask you this question, in my opinion, a
- 18:27Speaker 5: lot of actresses, and I hate to pick on the females,
- 18:31Speaker 5: but a lot of actresses don't actually like acting. I
- 18:35Speaker 5: think they like the they liked the idea of being famous.
- 18:39Speaker 5: And this just speaking strictly in my experience in the
- 18:42Speaker 5: New York Philly area.
- 18:43Speaker 6: So I mean, I do think that's It's I think
- 18:46Speaker 6: both genders definitely feel that way. And there's a lot
- 18:48Speaker 6: of people and I think I set backward quick just
- 18:50Speaker 6: because I'm just saying you shouldn't go to college. You
- 18:53Speaker 6: should never you should never stop learning. That's that's essentially
- 18:57Speaker 6: what it is like, even if you don't have to
- 18:58Speaker 6: go to school to pick up bubblek, you know, like
- 19:00Speaker 6: you and you should pick up books and learn the
- 19:02Speaker 6: basics of filmmaking. And then because you need to know
- 19:04Speaker 6: the rules in order to break the rules. That's I
- 19:06Speaker 6: totally believe that. But you don't need to good cops
- 19:07Speaker 6: like you can just pick up those books. Any row
- 19:10Speaker 6: I thing said about like you said about the talent, Uh,
- 19:12Speaker 6: you know, yeah, a lot of people get into this
- 19:14Speaker 6: industry for a variety of reasons.
- 19:18Speaker 4: And it's funny.
- 19:19Speaker 6: When I was actually starting off as an actor myself,
- 19:21Speaker 6: I read in a book that was like, if you're
- 19:23Speaker 6: getting into this for the money, you shouldn't be doing this.
- 19:26Speaker 4: If you're doing this for fame, you shouldn't be doing this, and.
- 19:28Speaker 6: If if you want fame, like that's something you've got
- 19:30Speaker 6: to kind of work on yourself for because like you know,
- 19:32Speaker 6: like that's not a reason to get into acting. And
- 19:34Speaker 6: then those are the people too, that once they start
- 19:36Speaker 6: getting into acting, they get so discouraged so quickly once
- 19:39Speaker 6: they hear no, you know, ten times, because they're not
- 19:41Speaker 6: in it for the right reasons, you know, like they
- 19:43Speaker 6: start to doubt themselves. And whereas if you just genuinely
- 19:46Speaker 6: love what you're doing, then you know, it doesn't matter
- 19:49Speaker 6: if at the end of the day you got gained
- 19:51Speaker 6: a new connection, you made a new you had a
- 19:53Speaker 6: new experience, like you'll learn something.
- 19:56Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 20:02Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 20:06Speaker 6: But yeah, people who get in for those reasons, they
- 20:08Speaker 6: definitely fall way harder and way quicker.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Yes, I mean I've seen it too, even just doing
- 20:14Speaker 5: like productions around here. Some people just it's almost they
- 20:19Speaker 5: like the idea of people telling them how great they
- 20:21Speaker 5: are this and that. And I think because this industry,
- 20:23Speaker 5: even the modeling, the print, the actress where you know,
- 20:26Speaker 5: the filmmaking whatever, you know, all of this is it
- 20:28Speaker 5: ties in together because it's it's under the entertainment field,
- 20:31Speaker 5: you know what I mean. And I think a lot
- 20:32Speaker 5: of times people use that for validation. I think they
- 20:35Speaker 5: maybe get in there because they they feel that if
- 20:38Speaker 5: they could succeed in this business, it's almost like a
- 20:41Speaker 5: personal stamp on themselves, you know what I mean.
- 20:43Speaker 6: I definitely know and I mean and that's the thing,
- 20:45Speaker 6: especially when you know, going out to La. Oh my god,
- 20:47Speaker 6: the egos out there are just insane. Like I went,
- 20:50Speaker 6: I walked into one party one time in LA and
- 20:53Speaker 6: the guy who was hosting a party was watching his
- 20:56Speaker 6: snapchat stories on the big screen TV with all of
- 21:00Speaker 6: his friends and they're all just like and I'm like,
- 21:02Speaker 6: what the hell am I looking at? Like this is
- 21:04Speaker 6: like why are you? Like you're watching your own snapchat
- 21:06Speaker 6: story on the TV? Like you guys don't want to
- 21:08Speaker 6: see it, But they were loving it and just like
- 21:09Speaker 6: it's very like a you know, everyone wants to there
- 21:13Speaker 6: is part of that rat race that they just are
- 21:14Speaker 6: trying to Like I don't know, they're feeding into it
- 21:17Speaker 6: for each other and like and for themselves in a
- 21:19Speaker 6: weird way. And I don't know, they're like if I
- 21:21Speaker 6: have that same party. The guy is playing a record
- 21:23Speaker 6: and instead of just playing the record, he actually had
- 21:26Speaker 6: a stand where you could showcase what record we were
- 21:29Speaker 6: all listening to. And I'm like that right there, that's
- 21:31Speaker 6: la or you know, like like that, Like it's not
- 21:33Speaker 6: just like you can't just be cool. You have to
- 21:35Speaker 6: be like in your face too, like like let me
- 21:36Speaker 6: show you how cool I am, you know, like and
- 21:39Speaker 6: that not everyone, you know, it's like that. I'm not
- 21:41Speaker 6: saying that, but I'm saying a lot of people who
- 21:43Speaker 6: are in the acting industry out there, they they're doing
- 21:46Speaker 6: that because they have to be They have to do
- 21:48Speaker 6: so many other models and actors out there. They have
- 21:50Speaker 6: to constantly be pushing themselves. So to some degree, they
- 21:53Speaker 6: just don't know. They don't even know what they're doing
- 21:56Speaker 6: until you're an outsider, you know, looking in and you're like,
- 21:59Speaker 6: oh my god, what the hell? Like this is so
- 22:01Speaker 6: egoistical and self serving and uh and dangerous. But like
- 22:05Speaker 6: I said, those people they crash hard, and I can
- 22:09Speaker 6: I don't. I don't have any of them at all.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's I think some of them too.
- 22:15Speaker 5: They they still stay in because I think I still
- 22:17Speaker 5: think that they feel maybe that they haven't given a
- 22:21Speaker 5: fair shake, or maybe because someone I know do burn out.
- 22:24Speaker 5: And honestly, it's like that that's what you need, honestly
- 22:27Speaker 5: because it's good for everybody, because it's good for them
- 22:29Speaker 5: because it shows them that they're going to waste their life,
- 22:32Speaker 5: waste their time, waste their money on something that at
- 22:34Speaker 5: the end of the day is going to make them happy.
- 22:36Speaker 4: I agree. I mean more people need to be told
- 22:38Speaker 4: no hour of no is say that.
- 22:41Speaker 6: Yeah, but the thing is like he's like, you know,
- 22:43Speaker 6: which one of us wouldn't want to be, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 6: a rock star or a famous actually that everybody wants that,
- 22:49Speaker 6: you know, but like very few are capable, let alone
- 22:52Speaker 6: or at the right time.
- 22:53Speaker 4: I mean I tell people this all the time, like, like,
- 22:55Speaker 4: so there are people.
- 22:56Speaker 6: Out in LA who are more talent it than Johnny Depp,
- 22:59Speaker 6: Tongue Cruise, whoever. You know, some of these A list
- 23:01Speaker 6: actors and they will never make it because they weren't
- 23:04Speaker 6: at the right place at the right time, you know.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Like and you know, so you can be as talent
- 23:08Speaker 6: as can be, and if you're just not at that
- 23:10Speaker 6: right moment, then you're not You're not going to be discovered,
- 23:13Speaker 6: you know.
- 23:13Speaker 4: And that's unfortunate.
- 23:14Speaker 5: But so do you think that's because they don't have
- 23:17Speaker 5: good networking skills or it's because maybe they just don't
- 23:20Speaker 5: have they're missing some kind of key ingredient which maybe
- 23:24Speaker 5: you know, maybe that networking, maybe that is it. Maybe
- 23:26Speaker 5: do they just not have the ability to build a
- 23:29Speaker 5: network or get somebody like you to just say, hey,
- 23:31Speaker 5: this guy's talented as shit, why isn't he working more?
- 23:34Speaker 6: You know, I don't think that is honestly, I just
- 23:36Speaker 6: I think it's part of this industry and it being
- 23:37Speaker 6: successful comes un to luck. And I hate to say that,
- 23:40Speaker 6: like and I hate luck.
- 23:41Speaker 4: I hate like.
- 23:41Speaker 6: I think you know you are the you know, the
- 23:43Speaker 6: maker of your own destiny. But at the same time,
- 23:45Speaker 6: you know, there's only so much you can know, there's
- 23:47Speaker 6: not only so much even I can do. You know,
- 23:48Speaker 6: when I send out my talent to the clients, you know,
- 23:50Speaker 6: I don't. I can't force my client's hand in picking someone.
- 23:53Speaker 6: You know, I can't say all right, I can try
- 23:55Speaker 6: to coerce them and say, hey, listen, this person is
- 23:56Speaker 6: really great and that was really great, and like you should,
- 23:58Speaker 6: you should, this is the person you want. But the
- 24:00Speaker 6: end of the day, it's really not even up to
- 24:01Speaker 6: my clients, sometimes up to my client's clients. So it's
- 24:03Speaker 6: really you know, down down the line are up the hierarchy.
- 24:09Speaker 6: So yeah, I mean networking definitely helps. They can increase
- 24:12Speaker 6: their chances. But I think there are some people who
- 24:14Speaker 6: do everything right and just they still aren't successful. And
- 24:17Speaker 6: that's that's unfortunate, but that's just how this industry is.
- 24:21Speaker 4: And well, I guess you know, luck does play sometimes
- 24:24Speaker 4: a bigger part than what we think, yeah, we want.
- 24:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and it kind of goes into the lottery. Some
- 24:30Speaker 5: people who won the lottery, they've I mean, that's all luck.
- 24:33Speaker 5: I mean, you know, I don't think you can actually,
- 24:35Speaker 5: you know, I don't think you compared to prepare every
- 24:37Speaker 5: one in the lottery, but or trained to win the lottery.
- 24:39Speaker 4: But some people have won.
- 24:40Speaker 5: The lottery, they've asked them later on.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Some people said, yeah, I deserve this, you know.
- 24:45Speaker 5: And it's like it's like the Monopoly experiment, the monopoly experiment,
- 24:48Speaker 5: which is if we play monopoly gainst each other, and
- 24:51Speaker 5: I started off with ninety percent owning everything, and then
- 24:54Speaker 5: you had the potential to buy the other five and
- 24:56Speaker 5: I just dominated you. They never the same people ever
- 25:00Speaker 5: actually said, well it was because I started off with
- 25:03Speaker 5: a hell of a lot more than he did. They
- 25:04Speaker 5: actually go, well, I had better tactics, and I had
- 25:06Speaker 5: a better strategy, and this and that, Well it's Jesus
- 25:09Speaker 5: if you win the boy, if you're going into ninety
- 25:11Speaker 5: five percent on the board and you didn't win, either
- 25:14Speaker 5: the other person was incredible genius, or you know, just
- 25:18Speaker 5: the odds were against you. But but you know, as
- 25:20Speaker 5: we talk about this, why you moved.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Out to LA?
- 25:23Speaker 5: Did you move out to LA because you were sort
- 25:24Speaker 5: of burned out from being in this area, which is
- 25:27Speaker 5: the Philly area where I'm talking.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Not necessarily.
- 25:30Speaker 6: I've a few reasons I moved out to l A
- 25:33Speaker 6: number one, because I mean, I've always lived here and
- 25:35Speaker 6: I've always wanted to live in LA at least just
- 25:37Speaker 6: try it, you know, if nothing else, just live in
- 25:38Speaker 6: a different city, you know. And also I had, contractually speaking,
- 25:43Speaker 6: I had a non compete with my other employment, so
- 25:46Speaker 6: I couldn't start my own agency because I was into
- 25:49Speaker 6: a buie. But these eighteen months, so I was happy
- 25:51Speaker 6: to do and and didn't you know, and so I figured,
- 25:54Speaker 6: well I might as well make the most of these
- 25:56Speaker 6: eighteen months. So let's work in the entertainment capital of
- 25:58Speaker 6: the world, knowing that, you know, one day I would
- 26:00Speaker 6: want to move back start my own agency and then
- 26:02Speaker 6: to have that LA credential would just I mean dominate,
- 26:05Speaker 6: you know, and just having those connections, let alone the experience,
- 26:09Speaker 6: would make me so much more appealing to talent to
- 26:13Speaker 6: open up an agency, I said, right here in Philadelphia.
- 26:15Speaker 5: So what was the impetus to actually move out at
- 26:17Speaker 5: What was it in your life where you finally said,
- 26:19Speaker 5: you know what, I better just move out? And then
- 26:21Speaker 5: and setting that date, was there anything that happened or
- 26:24Speaker 5: you've just said you know what, I better just do it.
- 26:26Speaker 6: So after I left my other place in employment, I
- 26:28Speaker 6: took a vacation because I was like, I have not
- 26:30Speaker 6: had a vacation for three four years. So I went
- 26:33Speaker 6: out to Portland and in LA and the people who
- 26:36Speaker 6: I ended up working with in LA, they had a
- 26:37Speaker 6: sister office in Portland, and I had met with them
- 26:40Speaker 6: and had a beer with the you know, the one
- 26:41Speaker 6: of the guys who runs it, and he was, I mean,
- 26:44Speaker 6: super great guy. We just jelled so well and I
- 26:47Speaker 6: really respected the company. And then they really dug me
- 26:49Speaker 6: and then So that's essentially what happened, is then when
- 26:52Speaker 6: an opportunity opened up, But I did Tellent was like,
- 26:54Speaker 6: I'd love to work in your LA office. One day,
- 26:56Speaker 6: when an opportunity actually opened up, I was one of
- 26:58Speaker 6: the first ones he called and then through there and that's.
- 27:00Speaker 4: So yeah, so it kind of just still moved out.
- 27:04Speaker 6: So sorry, So I moved out there without having a
- 27:10Speaker 6: place to live, but I still had a secure job.
- 27:13Speaker 6: And honestly, I think that would be my advice to
- 27:15Speaker 6: anyone who's thinking about moving into LA is do not
- 27:18Speaker 6: move to LA unless you were invited. Like there are
- 27:20Speaker 6: enough people there you especially as a model or actor,
- 27:24Speaker 6: Like you think it's glamorous to like be roughing it,
- 27:27Speaker 6: but like you have no idea what roughing it means,
- 27:30Speaker 6: you know, it is so everyone has these terrible, horrible
- 27:34Speaker 6: stories about when they first got to l A. Like
- 27:36Speaker 6: my my one buddy, my fellow ation you like lived
- 27:39Speaker 6: with like a in the house of like it's like
- 27:40Speaker 6: a two bedroom house with like six people, And there
- 27:44Speaker 6: was like a math addict who lived in the in
- 27:46Speaker 6: the garage and the diamonded laundry. He'd be harassed bire
- 27:49Speaker 6: like he's like and it's not like in that I mean,
- 27:51Speaker 6: this is what I was saying, Like it's a model
- 27:53Speaker 6: or actor like like god, like no, no, Like you
- 27:57Speaker 6: don't realize that the you know how hard also just
- 28:00Speaker 6: move out somewhere new and not know anybody.
- 28:02Speaker 4: That's so frustrating.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I mean I was lucky enough to me and my
- 28:04Speaker 6: girlfriend were out there, so we were able to kind
- 28:06Speaker 6: of use each other and help each other out.
- 28:08Speaker 4: But like even that was like I mean, you see, you're.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Here and you know in your where you know, in Philly,
- 28:14Speaker 6: and like your car breaks down, you can call someone
- 28:16Speaker 6: and they'll be there in La. Your car breaks down,
- 28:18Speaker 6: and you're like, well, fuck, I got number, Like I
- 28:21Speaker 6: have to figure this out, like I've got to take
- 28:23Speaker 6: a lift or I've got to you know. So there's
- 28:25Speaker 6: a lot of like it's very isolating out there, odd enough,
- 28:28Speaker 6: even there are so many people out there, there's like
- 28:31Speaker 6: it's it's it's it's rough, like it's it's really rough.
- 28:33Speaker 6: And and they said, and I like, I don't envy talent,
- 28:36Speaker 6: but honestly, like that's my hotallent now that I've been
- 28:39Speaker 6: out there, even even not even just talent like from writers,
- 28:41Speaker 6: the you know producer directors is to stay home.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Like stay in your in your your home base, and
- 28:47Speaker 4: like and honestly like succeed there, succeed there and then
- 28:50Speaker 4: then move out there.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Like they don't go to La looking for success because
- 28:54Speaker 6: I can guarantee you won't find it. You just will
- 28:55Speaker 6: not find that. The market out there is so overly saturated.
- 28:58Speaker 6: There are so many model, so many actors. I'd walk
- 29:01Speaker 6: into like a burger king and it's just like a casting.
- 29:04Speaker 6: There's like a casting called over models. So there's like
- 29:06Speaker 6: so many gorgeous people around, Like what the hell where
- 29:07Speaker 6: did I walk into? And it's just a burger king.
- 29:09Speaker 6: Like it's just like everyone out there is trying to
- 29:11Speaker 6: get the same trying to you know, achieve the same
- 29:14Speaker 6: dream and and and it's it's just too many people,
- 29:17Speaker 6: too many people, too many actors, too many models. I
- 29:19Speaker 6: represent some talent out there or I mean drop dead
- 29:22Speaker 6: gorgeous if they if I represented them here, I'd be
- 29:25Speaker 6: able to get them a ton of work. But out there,
- 29:27Speaker 6: like they they sometimes they would only get like two
- 29:29Speaker 6: three callbacks a month, and they'd.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Be like, well what happened, and like I don't know,
- 29:32Speaker 4: and be honest with what I think it is.
- 29:34Speaker 6: It's just it's just too many people, like you have
- 29:36Speaker 6: so many if like, yeah, you might be the top
- 29:38Speaker 6: of you you know, you might be the best looking
- 29:39Speaker 6: person here in Philadelphia. You go out to LA and
- 29:42Speaker 6: they're the you know, you're the best, You're with the
- 29:44Speaker 6: best looking people of everyone in their city. So you know,
- 29:46Speaker 6: it's it's really and that kind of fucks with the
- 29:48Speaker 6: talent said too. It's just because you're like, oh shit,
- 29:50Speaker 6: like I was at the top and now like I'm
- 29:53Speaker 6: you know, now there's people here they're even prettier than
- 29:56Speaker 6: I am, or more talented than I am.
- 29:58Speaker 2: So well be right back after a word from our
- 30:01Speaker 2: sponsor and now back to the show.
- 30:08Speaker 6: So that that's very frustrat because there's just so many people,
- 30:11Speaker 6: so many, so many models, so many actors, so many,
- 30:14Speaker 6: so much talent, and that's why you see a lot
- 30:16Speaker 6: of people leaving. And I think that's what needs to happen. Like,
- 30:18Speaker 6: so like to find success in your home. You know,
- 30:20Speaker 6: if you're a director, writer, whatever, do it at home first, like,
- 30:24Speaker 6: because if you can't do it here, then you certainly
- 30:26Speaker 6: can't do it out there, you know, absolutely not. You know,
- 30:28Speaker 6: like you like, it's so much more easier to be
- 30:30Speaker 6: known here in a smaller market than it is, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 6: out out there.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I've told other people too. You know, if you
- 30:38Speaker 4: live in it.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Let's just say you and I live in the middle
- 30:40Speaker 5: of America and a very small small town, it would
- 30:44Speaker 5: actually it's actually a pro to live there because if
- 30:48Speaker 5: I make my movie. I know Tom at the at
- 30:51Speaker 5: the uh you know, the autobody mccang show, I know
- 30:54Speaker 5: this guy, and there's actually more of a willing to
- 30:56Speaker 5: help you out because oh that's.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Cool, he's actually going out there and doing something.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Because you go to LA and you're like, hey, I'm
- 31:01Speaker 5: going to make a movie out here, everyone goes, well,
- 31:03Speaker 5: where's our paycheck. I knew a guy who came out
- 31:06Speaker 5: there and every day he had breakfast in the same place.
- 31:08Speaker 5: And he finally said, hey, I want to shoot a
- 31:10Speaker 5: thing here, and they go, okay, you can have to
- 31:11Speaker 5: shoot it.
- 31:11Speaker 4: You know, early in the morning.
- 31:13Speaker 5: And he's like okay, and they started telling him the
- 31:15Speaker 5: rates and he was like, are you out of your
- 31:19Speaker 5: freaking mind. I mean he's like it is astronomical, and
- 31:22Speaker 5: he goes, I'm just gonna shoot here for like three
- 31:24Speaker 5: hours like, well, still you know this and that he
- 31:26Speaker 5: goes not disrupting business. You know, you could still go
- 31:30Speaker 5: out you know what I mean. And it's just that's
- 31:32Speaker 5: that whole thing. That's a big talent pull out there,
- 31:34Speaker 5: and you have to be able to you know, succeed
- 31:36Speaker 5: wherever you are. And uh you know, I mean you
- 31:38Speaker 5: succeeded here. You know, I bombed out to start a
- 31:42Speaker 5: Palm Kit podcast, but but you know, slowly building myself
- 31:48Speaker 5: back up. And I think you basically now you're ready
- 31:51Speaker 5: to go to the next level. Uh in you're in.
- 31:54Speaker 5: You're in your professional life, right, So that's why you start.
- 31:57Speaker 6: That's why you know right now, it's that in La
- 31:58Speaker 6: Like I loved LA, I really did. I loved it,
- 32:00Speaker 6: like I didn't really want to leave. I still miss it.
- 32:02Speaker 6: I hope that one day open an office there, Like
- 32:04Speaker 6: I definitely want to go back. That being said, financially speaking,
- 32:08Speaker 6: it is a bitch out there and like and people,
- 32:11Speaker 6: and when you go out there and you think you
- 32:12Speaker 6: can rise above it, you think that you know you
- 32:14Speaker 6: can lea you know you can overcome it, but you can't.
- 32:17Speaker 6: Like for me and my girlfriend to see a movie,
- 32:19Speaker 6: any movie on like a Tuesday afternoon, sixty dollars for
- 32:22Speaker 6: two tickets. Jesus, yeah, yeah to sixty bucks, no lie,
- 32:25Speaker 6: and that this is for an everyday movie, you know.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Like so it's like after like the cost of living
- 32:29Speaker 6: out there it's crazy once again. If you go out
- 32:32Speaker 6: there's a model or actre, you better have a big
- 32:34Speaker 6: nest egg of really big and that's gonna go quick
- 32:36Speaker 6: even even still, you know. So it is just the
- 32:38Speaker 6: costant is just crazy out there. I mean it's a
- 32:40Speaker 6: good went dairy queen a blizzard was like eight bucks,
- 32:43Speaker 6: like she ward.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Know, I could live like a king here. Well then
- 32:46Speaker 4: we came back and we're like, oh my god, like
- 32:47Speaker 4: her money goes so much farther like what it was
- 32:50Speaker 4: in New York. I was saying, I bought a red
- 32:52Speaker 4: Bull up there too, because I had to take it
- 32:53Speaker 4: in there.
- 32:54Speaker 5: There were five dollars a camp were as small as
- 32:57Speaker 5: camp possible, I mean the dinky little eight ounce ones. Ye,
- 32:59Speaker 5: it was like five twenty five each. Oh my god,
- 33:02Speaker 5: I'm like, huh, I bought four of them. It was
- 33:04Speaker 5: like it was twenty one dollars. No, it was twenty
- 33:07Speaker 5: two something because tax everything. I'm like Jesus God. Yeah, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 5: and it's it just it was but I was like,
- 33:13Speaker 5: you know what, you win this roundbow day.
- 33:15Speaker 4: I needed those red bulls.
- 33:16Speaker 6: So no, that's the And when we were leaving, I
- 33:19Speaker 6: talked to her friend and he's like, yeah, well, like
- 33:21Speaker 6: in order to make it out on No La, in
- 33:23Speaker 6: order just even to get by, We're not just say
- 33:25Speaker 6: living comfortably.
- 33:26Speaker 4: We're just saying, just to make it, you have to
- 33:27Speaker 4: make it at least eighty grand a year at least.
- 33:29Speaker 6: And I see it in the wage gap out there
- 33:31Speaker 6: is so apparent, Like you see people, I mean they're
- 33:34Speaker 6: in in Lamborghinis and rioting like all you know, I drive,
- 33:37Speaker 6: you drive through the hills every day and you just
- 33:39Speaker 6: see like the money out there, and there is a
- 33:41Speaker 6: ton of money out there, but like all these people
- 33:43Speaker 6: brought it in or from outside or you know, like
- 33:46Speaker 6: like the gap between like the rich and that pour
- 33:49Speaker 6: out there, it's just so evident and it's just so drastic.
- 33:52Speaker 6: And that's the thing everyone, like, you know, I hate
- 33:54Speaker 6: to say, but there's like so many homeless people that
- 33:55Speaker 6: have so many home and there there shouldn't be the
- 33:57Speaker 6: amount of taxes that you're paying out in no a
- 33:59Speaker 6: like you should, they should take care of the homeless problem.
- 34:01Speaker 6: There's so many homeless people there, and there are people
- 34:04Speaker 6: on the streets asking for money for rent, and it's
- 34:06Speaker 6: like damn, like you know, like that's how like shit.
- 34:08Speaker 6: I mean, it's like we're all struggling to get by
- 34:11Speaker 6: with right, you know. And then and it was also
- 34:13Speaker 6: like the gentrification. It's really a parent out there. I
- 34:15Speaker 6: mean that's how you know, we live in North Hollywood,
- 34:17Speaker 6: which was also in the mists of being gentrified and centification.
- 34:21Speaker 6: Says a double edged sword for that eventually happens is
- 34:23Speaker 6: that you get priced out, like you live there until
- 34:25Speaker 6: you cannot, you know, until you're told to get moving.
- 34:29Speaker 6: So yeah, so like it's I definitely like the way
- 34:31Speaker 6: there's some of that. There's one homeless guy out there.
- 34:34Speaker 6: I just see him every day driving home from work.
- 34:36Speaker 6: He had a sign it was like follow me on
- 34:38Speaker 6: Twitter at that La homeless guys.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Really that LA homeless guy. I think I think it's
- 34:44Speaker 4: something like that.
- 34:44Speaker 6: It wasn't that specifically, it was like Jesus, like we're
- 34:48Speaker 6: in LA.
- 34:49Speaker 4: I actually have to follow him after Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 34:51Speaker 4: look him up, that LA homeless guy. I'm sure he
- 34:53Speaker 4: takes uh like online payments. Yeah right, Oh that's even better.
- 34:58Speaker 4: I could like send like an air tip.
- 35:00Speaker 6: That's why I wast like most of the homest people
- 35:01Speaker 6: out there. I tell him, like, listen, I don't care
- 35:03Speaker 6: cash on me. Like if you had a card reader,
- 35:05Speaker 6: like I might give you a buck, but like I
- 35:08Speaker 6: literally I have no cash on people.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I don't carry cash when the huler does.
- 35:11Speaker 5: I actually I pay for these cheese takes with a
- 35:13Speaker 5: credit card because online I was like, see I order
- 35:16Speaker 5: to go online order through Season's website and they had
- 35:18Speaker 5: to deliver because I got you know, I.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Don't carry cash. Who carries cash? No? No, no one does.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:22Speaker 6: That's why every time I go to a restaurant, even here,
- 35:24Speaker 6: it's like like, oh cash only. I was like, hush, shit,
- 35:27Speaker 6: who's that ATM you know? But yeah, so like moving
- 35:31Speaker 6: back essentially was for me. It was a step up
- 35:34Speaker 6: because I knew that like then, even as an agent's perspective,
- 35:37Speaker 6: you know, like you know you're making money for someone else.
- 35:39Speaker 6: I want to make money for me, and you know,
- 35:42Speaker 6: from a purely financial aspect, it's like, well, then what
- 35:46Speaker 6: is an agency really doing for me? That if I
- 35:48Speaker 6: just didn't take six months off. I couldn't do for myself,
- 35:50Speaker 6: you know, like so, and that's what essentially I've been
- 35:52Speaker 6: doing for the past six months, and just when had
- 35:54Speaker 6: to open up a business because just because I'm a
- 35:55Speaker 6: good agent doesn't mean I'm a good business man. So
- 35:58Speaker 6: I've been learning, you know, quick books, learning, you know,
- 36:00Speaker 6: hiring a lawyer, doing all this stuff and branding and
- 36:03Speaker 6: all that that fun stuff.
- 36:04Speaker 4: And I love it because it's something completely new.
- 36:07Speaker 6: But in my mind, you know, you want a job
- 36:09Speaker 6: where you have people working to make you money, not
- 36:12Speaker 6: the other way around, you know, like you gotta I
- 36:15Speaker 6: don't know, you want.
- 36:15Speaker 4: To be upstream for sure, So that that's yeah.
- 36:19Speaker 5: Episode ninety nine I had on Morgan J. Freeman, who
- 36:23Speaker 5: set the record for sun Dance. He actually became the
- 36:26Speaker 5: first director ever to win like the Triple Crown.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Very good story.
- 36:32Speaker 5: About him about what you know, what happened to him. Sure,
- 36:36Speaker 5: he's very open and honest about it, but he had
- 36:39Speaker 5: he had his saying that I still sticks with me
- 36:41Speaker 5: now and it's greenlight yourself. Green light yourself. He goes,
- 36:44Speaker 5: do not wait for everybody else. You have to greenlight yourself,
- 36:46Speaker 5: and you have to put those opportunities and create your
- 36:48Speaker 5: own opportunities because.
- 36:49Speaker 4: It's not gonna come to your doing, you know. Well,
- 36:50Speaker 4: I think it's.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Also true for for our generation as well, because I
- 36:53Speaker 6: mean going back to the college thing. So like we
- 36:55Speaker 6: have people are in our our generation when when we
- 36:58Speaker 6: were in college, we were told my professors on me
- 37:00Speaker 6: all the time, you're fought like, there are no jobs
- 37:02Speaker 6: out when you when you leave college. And so we
- 37:05Speaker 6: all left college and we had a ton of student
- 37:07Speaker 6: loans now and which many of our generations are still
- 37:10Speaker 6: paying off. That's why they can't afford to move out
- 37:12Speaker 6: because that rent money is essentially going to the student loans.
- 37:15Speaker 6: So but so we graduated college, there were no jobs
- 37:18Speaker 6: for us. There was there, there's a recession that which hid,
- 37:20Speaker 6: and then the job marks start coming back. Well, then
- 37:23Speaker 6: this is this gap if you look at at people
- 37:25Speaker 6: which our generation, and there are people older than us
- 37:27Speaker 6: who have experience, and people younger than us who have
- 37:30Speaker 6: a better, more current college education, and then there's just us,
- 37:33Speaker 6: which is like we got no experience, we don't have
- 37:35Speaker 6: a current education. So now what And honestly, and part
- 37:39Speaker 6: of my thinking is like, well, honestly, it comes to
- 37:42Speaker 6: starting your own business, You're gonna have to, like you're
- 37:44Speaker 6: gonna have to, like I said, green light yourself, and
- 37:45Speaker 6: you're gonna have to if you want any chance about
- 37:48Speaker 6: being successful, you've got to just do it on your
- 37:50Speaker 6: pick that leap, take that jump, you know, and just
- 37:53Speaker 6: nothing else, just try.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely, That's why I started this podcast,
- 37:57Speaker 5: you know, I wanted a chance just to know no
- 38:00Speaker 5: one will probably hire me as their podcast host. Start
- 38:04Speaker 5: this podcast, and now I get people actually try me
- 38:06Speaker 5: and ask me how to sit there on podcast, Like
- 38:09Speaker 5: other opportunities have come in where I've had to been
- 38:11Speaker 5: like no, no, no, maybe yes to this and just
- 38:14Speaker 5: different stuff.
- 38:14Speaker 6: And I don't have nothing that's yours. That's the way
- 38:16Speaker 6: I love about my own business. It's my business. Yeah,
- 38:19Speaker 6: Like like you fail or succeed, it's all based on you,
- 38:21Speaker 6: and yeah that's a lot of pressure.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Yeah, but at the same time, like you just no
- 38:24Speaker 4: one else to blame, you know.
- 38:25Speaker 6: Like there's no one, you don't have anyone over your
- 38:27Speaker 6: over your shoulders telling you to do this.
- 38:28Speaker 4: Do that.
- 38:29Speaker 6: You just had although we do answer to somebody, but
- 38:32Speaker 6: you know, when you have your own business, it's like
- 38:34Speaker 6: you you are the one and only and that's it's
- 38:37Speaker 6: I really love that feeling. I love that feeling and
- 38:38Speaker 6: it motivates me and I think it's because I'm sure
- 38:41Speaker 6: it does for you as well, and it's like it's
- 38:43Speaker 6: just great to know that, like it's your baby.
- 38:45Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, because you know you you get a chance
- 38:48Speaker 5: to do everything here with starting this podcast, I kind
- 38:51Speaker 5: of you know, Mark Maron has his own setup.
- 38:52Speaker 4: This was only four or five people.
- 38:53Speaker 5: I kind of model this answer the Nervous with Chris Hardware,
- 38:56Speaker 5: the Mark Maron's wtf uh and like and a couple
- 38:59Speaker 5: other and you know, the the the one guy that
- 39:03Speaker 5: I kind of modeled to say after he's got he
- 39:05Speaker 5: does everything just like I do, where basically he edits it,
- 39:08Speaker 5: he helped promotes it. It's like a one man band.
- 39:10Speaker 5: I'm trying to go beyond that right now and just
- 39:13Speaker 5: sort of get get out there a little more. But
- 39:15Speaker 5: but you know, going back to you know, you starting
- 39:17Speaker 5: your agency, you know, uh you I think it launched
- 39:21Speaker 5: last month.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Right, Oh no, we didn't. I haven't lunched yet. Oh
- 39:23Speaker 4: we haven't leucht yet. So I moved back here in October.
- 39:26Speaker 6: I'm still been learning and and still been you know,
- 39:28Speaker 6: taking the appropriate steps on how to form an LLC
- 39:32Speaker 6: and you know, get my ei N and all that
- 39:33Speaker 6: that fun stuff. And so we are not quite open yet.
- 39:38Speaker 6: We're actually gonna be opening up. I was hoping for
- 39:41Speaker 6: April first, but now I'm thinking May first. Is because
- 39:44Speaker 6: you know, it's by when you open your own business,
- 39:46Speaker 6: when it comes down to just you, you can get
- 39:49Speaker 6: a lot done very quickly. As soon as you start
- 39:51Speaker 6: relying on someone else, your business lays down to a cross.
- 39:55Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 40:01Speaker 2: and now back to the show, you know.
- 40:05Speaker 4: And nothing.
- 40:06Speaker 6: You know, it's not, you know, because the other people
- 40:09Speaker 6: being lazy. It's just because you have to rely on
- 40:11Speaker 6: other people and they're swamps with other things. So when
- 40:14Speaker 6: you have to start relying on other people, that's when
- 40:16Speaker 6: when things just really slow down. But you know, so
- 40:19Speaker 6: right now we have our website is about to be built.
- 40:21Speaker 6: It's the same people who do all the big guys
- 40:23Speaker 6: up in New York City. Will let me know, Qutaly saying,
- 40:25Speaker 6: people who build their website or building our website, we're
- 40:27Speaker 6: gonna get the top of line booking software, which is
- 40:30Speaker 6: gonna be awesome. So no one else here in Philadelphia
- 40:32Speaker 6: has the booking software that we will have, so really
- 40:34Speaker 6: really proud about that. Uh and so yeah, so right
- 40:37Speaker 6: now we're doing that as well as you know, doing
- 40:38Speaker 6: some stuff with the stand New Jersey. So I have
- 40:40Speaker 6: to get my licensing. But in order to get a license,
- 40:42Speaker 6: you need to have an office. And then in order
- 40:45Speaker 6: to get my SAG, you know, become a member of SAG,
- 40:47Speaker 6: which people will be sack franchised, you need to have
- 40:50Speaker 6: your licensing and then also have an office. So I
- 40:52Speaker 6: didn't want to sit on an office for too long
- 40:54Speaker 6: and not actually be using it. So we're actually gonna
- 40:57Speaker 6: start the least probably next week with the office, the
- 41:00Speaker 6: actual office space.
- 41:01Speaker 4: How did you actually find the office space?
- 41:02Speaker 6: I mean, you know, it's just in the when we've
- 41:05Speaker 6: looked at our startup funds, you know, I went a
- 41:07Speaker 6: good portion of the store funds to go to the website.
- 41:09Speaker 6: The website, because that is to what I mean makes
- 41:11Speaker 6: or breaks a company these days, especially in this industry.
- 41:13Speaker 6: I mean, it's all about the website and how how
- 41:15Speaker 6: professional it looks. So we went the best website not
- 41:18Speaker 6: only Philadelphia, but also one that we can pet up
- 41:20Speaker 6: in New York City because we're really focusing on on Philadelphia, DC,
- 41:23Speaker 6: and New York City, trying to bridge those three cities,
- 41:27Speaker 6: which is why we opened up in Jersey or we're
- 41:29Speaker 6: opening up in Jersey.
- 41:31Speaker 4: But so, what was the question again, opening your office? Yeaheah, okay,
- 41:36Speaker 4: it's it's the office.
- 41:37Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, So the office we just went with one
- 41:39Speaker 6: of those those regis like we work spaces.
- 41:41Speaker 4: You know, it's not no one's going to be in
- 41:43Speaker 4: my office. The office is just for me.
- 41:45Speaker 6: Obviously, I'm probably not even gonna be in my office
- 41:46Speaker 6: most days, you know, like I'm always on the go,
- 41:48Speaker 6: always on the rine and working for my laptop and
- 41:50Speaker 6: and so has everyone else in this industry. So so
- 41:52Speaker 6: long as you answer the phone, like you know, like uh,
- 41:55Speaker 6: then that's all that matters, no matter where you're working with.
- 41:59Speaker 6: My clients are in their job. Was how the time
- 42:00Speaker 6: I talked about well, they don't care.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Yeah, So I I don't know how much you could
- 42:05Speaker 5: talk about this, but you had mentioned startup funds.
- 42:09Speaker 4: I think that's pretty cool.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Because, by the way, you mentioned E I N number, which,
- 42:12Speaker 5: by way, everyone listening, that's the the dreaded tax number
- 42:15Speaker 5: that you have to use to pay your tax.
- 42:17Speaker 4: But I've been down that road many times.
- 42:19Speaker 5: I see that. I'm like, oh, the taxman's are coming.
- 42:22Speaker 5: You could piss off the mafia. You could piss off
- 42:24Speaker 5: a lot of people. Don't piss off Oh the I
- 42:27Speaker 5: R s. Well they got al capone. Okay, you are
- 42:31Speaker 5: not going to get by there. So so where if
- 42:34Speaker 5: you can talk how did you raise your your own startup?
- 42:37Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's funny, like one thing I thought
- 42:40Speaker 6: going into this business and don't be on my own
- 42:42Speaker 6: business like, oh I can find a loan or I
- 42:44Speaker 6: can find like or the banks will hand it out.
- 42:47Speaker 6: Fun fact, banks do not give out the small business loans.
- 42:50Speaker 6: That doesn't happen. You know, there's really not You can't
- 42:53Speaker 6: even use your reversal funds. Really is leverage or your
- 42:55Speaker 6: credit It doesn't really work like that. A lot of
- 42:58Speaker 6: a lot of companies are actually funny by on their
- 43:00Speaker 6: credit card, you know, which is crazy because you know
- 43:03Speaker 6: the credit card companies can jack up their prices, you know,
- 43:05Speaker 6: or their interest rates or what have you. So a
- 43:07Speaker 6: lot of and I just I never knew that. I
- 43:09Speaker 6: thought like the banks would be willing and happy to
- 43:12Speaker 6: give me a load.
- 43:12Speaker 4: But no, it's not.
- 43:14Speaker 6: And I have a really good credit score and like,
- 43:16Speaker 6: not the brag, but I'm just saying like that's I
- 43:19Speaker 6: was like, ohh yeah, they.
- 43:20Speaker 5: They want collateral where they want something like a co
- 43:22Speaker 5: signer or you know, because they.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Got to break your legs. Yeah.
- 43:26Speaker 6: So so a lot of like I said, a lot
- 43:28Speaker 6: of small businesses just done through bootstrapping, and uh, for
- 43:32Speaker 6: for us, we were able to secure a private investor
- 43:36Speaker 6: who was willing to defront the whole startup costs.
- 43:39Speaker 4: That it was great. It was really really lucky to
- 43:42Speaker 4: have that.
- 43:42Speaker 6: And really, I mean we wouldn't be able to run
- 43:46Speaker 6: if it wasn't for that load, or rather would have
- 43:49Speaker 6: taken a lot longer. So really really appreciative and grateful
- 43:53Speaker 6: for that.
- 43:54Speaker 4: But yeah, so that's essentially yeah, I would started.
- 43:57Speaker 5: That's awesome though, thank you, Bye, I just took a
- 44:00Speaker 5: bay of cheese stacking me in this.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Sorry, so well as as you sort of go, now,
- 44:04Speaker 4: where did you cope with the name of VI?
- 44:05Speaker 6: But so, what I want to do is I want
- 44:08Speaker 6: to make sure that like when we open up our agency,
- 44:11Speaker 6: we're not on the defense. We're very much on the offense.
- 44:13Speaker 6: We want to compete we want to attack, we want
- 44:16Speaker 6: to make ourselves known. So but I just definitely kind
- 44:18Speaker 6: of fit more in tune with that as well as
- 44:21Speaker 6: even our I mean our logo or or the V
- 44:23Speaker 6: lettering is is like a crimson read for a reason,
- 44:25Speaker 6: because we wanted to be you know known as as
- 44:28Speaker 6: you know, aggressive. So I definitely you know, was fit
- 44:32Speaker 6: in real nicely. I just like they're having a three
- 44:34Speaker 6: letter name sounded good. It just even fit well with
- 44:36Speaker 6: like you know, Forward Elite VI well, I mean, you know,
- 44:39Speaker 6: just kind of fit nicely in there as well as
- 44:42Speaker 6: just having you know, additional implications and definitely kind of
- 44:45Speaker 6: going with the brand. But then also the U r
- 44:48Speaker 6: L was a big thing, so we had VI Agency
- 44:50Speaker 6: dot Com was available, you know, like no one else did.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Ook and Vie, I mean, and I had gone through it.
- 44:55Speaker 6: There was a good ten other names which I also
- 44:57Speaker 6: would like, but you know, they weren't available because the
- 45:00Speaker 6: r L was like a thousand dollars or you know,
- 45:02Speaker 6: So that's that's a I mean with the website, it's
- 45:04Speaker 6: it's it's something you really have to consider when you're
- 45:06Speaker 6: naming your businesses. Is it available and it's someone else
- 45:10Speaker 6: does someone else have it, and you know, and I
- 45:12Speaker 6: think there is another there might be another vibe Incine
- 45:15Speaker 6: like Germany or something like that. But like it's like
- 45:17Speaker 6: it's so like that's you know, that's not a big deal.
- 45:20Speaker 5: But yeah, was one of the other names, like I
- 45:23Speaker 5: play on off of your name, like on the Ball
- 45:25Speaker 5: on the Ball agency people.
- 45:27Speaker 6: People asked to do, like like of course, like you
- 45:29Speaker 6: get like that the balls models because of the Zoolander
- 45:31Speaker 6: thing and like god zulas just like the bang of
- 45:34Speaker 6: my existence.
- 45:35Speaker 4: I hear fucking Zoolander jokes every day in my life.
- 45:37Speaker 4: And so what do you think of zu Lander too?
- 45:40Speaker 4: I didn't see it. Oh there's garbage. So I'm like, uh,
- 45:44Speaker 4: see it, I see, I see. I see a lot
- 45:46Speaker 4: of movies. Well I see a lot of Yeah. I
- 45:48Speaker 4: mean I did too, but I just that one. I
- 45:50Speaker 4: was like, I.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Uh, there was one funny part and the rest of it.
- 45:56Speaker 5: I was like, what the hell happened? It's like it's
- 45:59Speaker 5: a almost like all of the the the the funny
- 46:03Speaker 5: and the scenes and the craftsmanship of the first film
- 46:06Speaker 5: was all lost, and it was like it was just
- 46:09Speaker 5: almost like like we weird. It was almost a fact
- 46:12Speaker 5: that early nineties comedy theme.
- 46:14Speaker 6: Yeah, well that's the thing, like like there's kind of comedy,
- 46:16Speaker 6: they just don't work anymore, Like like I think the
- 46:18Speaker 6: first one was like lightning in a bottle in a way,
- 46:20Speaker 6: and that's.
- 46:21Speaker 4: There was one foot.
- 46:22Speaker 5: There was one funny part though in zoo Let or two,
- 46:24Speaker 5: and I'll just tell you what it is because you're
- 46:25Speaker 5: probably never gonna say, so where is it?
- 46:28Speaker 4: Moufesto laasafoss He's in.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Jail at his old Ferrell and he actually has a
- 46:34Speaker 5: way to break out, right, So he gets Derek Zuelander
- 46:37Speaker 5: come into the jail and he's like, here's my plan
- 46:39Speaker 5: to how I'm gonna escape, And he has fashion a
- 46:41Speaker 5: Derek Zulander mask that is so shitty looking and he's
- 46:45Speaker 5: actually fashioned another mess looks like him to put on Derek.
- 46:48Speaker 5: So so now Derek is chained up with the Mafosster
- 46:51Speaker 5: mask on. Well, Mafossa walks out of this Derek Zulander
- 46:54Speaker 5: mask on. It's so blatantly obvious and it was like,
- 46:56Speaker 5: oh goodbye Derek. He's like it's act out was actually funny.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Everything else I was.
- 47:02Speaker 6: Like, well I just watched The Dumb and Dumber or
- 47:07Speaker 6: I just I honestly, I turned it off, and I
- 47:09Speaker 6: never turned off movies, but like I think it was
- 47:12Speaker 6: like I got like twenty five minutes in and I'm like,
- 47:13Speaker 6: I can't, I can't.
- 47:15Speaker 5: You know what's sad part is it doesn't get any better.
- 47:17Speaker 5: I very rarely have returned off movies either. That's why
- 47:20Speaker 5: I've always said the first one was so good. I
- 47:23Speaker 5: was actually just talking about yesterday and then then I
- 47:25Speaker 5: saw that one.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I was like, what the hell happened? I feel like
- 47:28Speaker 4: comedy is in a bad state right now.
- 47:30Speaker 6: Like, you know, the funniest movie last year was pop
- 47:33Speaker 6: Star Never Stopped Never Saw Yeah, I mean that was
- 47:35Speaker 6: I mean, it was great, It was awesome and no
- 47:37Speaker 6: one saw it. But as far as like comedies are concerned,
- 47:40Speaker 6: like it just they're so pissed, poor and just half assed,
- 47:43Speaker 6: and it's sad comedies like to come back and now
- 47:47Speaker 6: like the jut Appatue dayses are over, Like those comedies
- 47:50Speaker 6: don't work anymore, even those guys. Or like, I mean,
- 47:52Speaker 6: I had really high hoped for Sausage Party and it
- 47:54Speaker 6: was just, you know, it wasn't bad. I did feel
- 47:56Speaker 6: like the story of it and like some of the
- 47:57Speaker 6: plot points in the Villain was awesome, but like this,
- 48:00Speaker 6: the jokes on a smaller level just did not keep
- 48:02Speaker 6: that movie going.
- 48:03Speaker 5: You know, you know what I think the big problem is,
- 48:04Speaker 5: and I'll king aside and don't tell about comedy.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Is you get that?
- 48:10Speaker 5: I was saying, oh, king aside, but was that is
- 48:13Speaker 5: the fact that it's almost like comedy has come down
- 48:15Speaker 5: in two scenarios.
- 48:16Speaker 4: First scenario is this, you're the straight man.
- 48:19Speaker 5: I'm gonna be like the you know guy, and you're
- 48:21Speaker 5: you're like, oh, I got a problem, Dave, and this
- 48:22Speaker 5: and that, and I go, oh, yeah, one, don't you
- 48:24Speaker 5: give her the old motor boat?
- 48:26Speaker 4: And you're like, motor boat? What's that?
- 48:27Speaker 5: Oh?
- 48:27Speaker 4: Come on, it's that that scenario or.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Or the other one is the other side of this
- 48:35Speaker 5: is you know, we harp on something like you you
- 48:39Speaker 5: come in and do something, and I.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Just harp and harp and harp on it. Oh that
- 48:42Speaker 4: was dud. Did somebody say boner or something like that?
- 48:45Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 48:45Speaker 5: Like you come in and you and you and and
- 48:47Speaker 5: you like do something like, oh, it's awful like this,
- 48:51Speaker 5: and we just keep.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Harping on that.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And I see every comedy they if you think if
- 48:55Speaker 5: you look out, you're not gonna be able to not
- 48:56Speaker 5: to say it now that I mentioned it. Seriously, they're
- 48:58Speaker 5: gonna follow one or two. I was templates to kind
- 49:00Speaker 5: of follow Model one or Model two. But every scene,
- 49:04Speaker 5: no matter what's going on, that's what it's like, every
- 49:06Speaker 5: joke has. That's why when when Workoholic season three they
- 49:08Speaker 5: had a board of ship that should be to stopped.
- 49:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, I like that a lot.
- 49:12Speaker 6: I think that's a really like smart way to do that.
- 49:15Speaker 6: And I mean even like honestly, I think also this
- 49:17Speaker 6: this improv movement has gone too far. That's why like
- 49:19Speaker 6: Ghostbusters doesn't work at all, because you can tell like
- 49:22Speaker 6: they were just on set and they're like, all right,
- 49:24Speaker 6: be funny and you just keep going and just but
- 49:26Speaker 6: that's not funny, Like that's like that doesn't make good comedy.
- 49:29Speaker 4: And it just doesn't.
- 49:30Speaker 6: Somebody even that movie just didn't make The jokes just
- 49:32Speaker 6: didn't make sense, Like it just it was so nonsensical
- 49:34Speaker 6: and just so confusing and and like I said, but
- 49:37Speaker 6: like you cannot just improv like improv, it's kind of
- 49:40Speaker 6: like only a few people can do that. You know,
- 49:42Speaker 6: like you're looking at like the days of like Reno
- 49:44Speaker 6: nine one one, and like that was so funny, Like
- 49:45Speaker 6: most of that was improm and that's crazy, and like
- 49:47Speaker 6: they were talented, they knew they were all on board,
- 49:49Speaker 6: but even that was like a niche And now everyone's
- 49:51Speaker 6: doing that back then and he doesn't need to. You
- 49:53Speaker 6: can't make a movie out of it. We're just right
- 49:55Speaker 6: on your you know, when you're a screenwriting just be
- 49:56Speaker 6: like make jokes, you know, like, man.
- 50:00Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 50:06Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 50:09Speaker 5: Sure, you know the best part of Ghostbusters the remake
- 50:13Speaker 5: was the ongoing joke that Melissa McCarthy in that Chinese place.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Yeah, that was the funniest.
- 50:18Speaker 6: Like that could I could relate to that, and like
- 50:20Speaker 6: I did, and I know other people kind of sitting
- 50:22Speaker 6: on that joke, but I did.
- 50:23Speaker 4: I agree that thought that was the only thing. I
- 50:24Speaker 4: was like, h like, I just like gave a half smile, like, okay,
- 50:27Speaker 4: well you see me about the Chinese place.
- 50:28Speaker 5: You guys should be up here in ten minutes and
- 50:30Speaker 5: it's like one brunt or whatever. I thought that was
- 50:33Speaker 5: hilarious and I was like, that's the stuff they should
- 50:35Speaker 5: have been heart focused on.
- 50:36Speaker 4: The world. And then when when when Bill Murray came
- 50:38Speaker 4: in there, oh.
- 50:39Speaker 6: Geez, like you waited, like you specifically didn't do Ghostbussers
- 50:42Speaker 6: just to get this role, like cock the fuck out
- 50:45Speaker 6: of here, like you suck like like all like all
- 50:48Speaker 6: those those cameos were just like so forth and so
- 50:50Speaker 6: like it's just painful, like and that's it's not like
- 50:54Speaker 6: it's not honestly, I blame that.
- 50:55Speaker 4: It's not the women, it's the man behind the movie
- 50:57Speaker 4: who like and I like me.
- 50:59Speaker 6: I think he had some good like directing some of
- 51:00Speaker 6: my favorite Office episodes, like he has the capacity, but
- 51:03Speaker 6: like lately he's not.
- 51:04Speaker 4: Been bringing it.
- 51:05Speaker 6: I don't know what's what this deal is, but uh whatever, comedy,
- 51:09Speaker 6: So comedy sucks right now. And uh, like I said,
- 51:12Speaker 6: never see pop star never stopped, never stopping.
- 51:14Speaker 4: If we have it, well I'll link that in the
- 51:15Speaker 4: show notes as well.
- 51:17Speaker 5: But so you know, basically now VI, it's it's opened
- 51:20Speaker 5: up now and people can submit to be represented.
- 51:22Speaker 6: Yeah we're so we're not We're not open, like I said,
- 51:24Speaker 6: we're not. We haven't opened our doors yet, but we
- 51:26Speaker 6: are accepting early applications.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I'm trying to say, was that you
- 51:28Speaker 5: were opening up for applications, like meaning that you can
- 51:31Speaker 5: now submit to you to be represented. So basically, is
- 51:36Speaker 5: there any criteria that that for any actors or models
- 51:38Speaker 5: or anything listening to this? Should they be you know,
- 51:41Speaker 5: like should should you looking for certain somebody? Are you're
- 51:43Speaker 5: looking for a certain size, shape, or are you're just open?
- 51:47Speaker 6: So yeah, so obviously there's different divisions. We have our
- 51:49Speaker 6: mulling division and we have our acting division. Acting division.
- 51:53Speaker 6: We need people of every age, every size, ever look
- 51:56Speaker 6: so long as they are experienced and they you know,
- 51:58Speaker 6: are talented, You're by all me, like I said, I
- 52:02Speaker 6: want to see him.
- 52:03Speaker 4: I want to know who they are. That being said,
- 52:04Speaker 4: we are not representing any kids right.
- 52:06Speaker 6: Now, just because honestly, kids are double the work and
- 52:10Speaker 6: have to pay, and I just don't want to. I
- 52:12Speaker 6: don't want to deal with parents, just like it beat
- 52:14Speaker 6: a parent, right I want to like and honestly, like,
- 52:16Speaker 6: I'm one person right now, so like I don't have
- 52:18Speaker 6: time to deal with momagers and daddagers and just like
- 52:21Speaker 6: that home a lot, and it's all I mean, it's
- 52:23Speaker 6: also a great excuse for like when I go to
- 52:25Speaker 6: the bank and people are like oh, you're on your
- 52:26Speaker 6: own business.
- 52:27Speaker 4: What do you do?
- 52:28Speaker 6: And I'm like, oh, with that on an agent like oh,
- 52:29Speaker 6: well my kid, and I'm just like nope, we don't.
- 52:32Speaker 6: We don't represent kids. Sorry, you know, I have a
- 52:35Speaker 6: good day. So it's but then, as far as actors
- 52:39Speaker 6: or something, models are concerned, les definitely have a more.
- 52:42Speaker 4: A strict criteria.
- 52:44Speaker 6: I mean they should be above if you're a female,
- 52:46Speaker 6: should be under or over me five eight if you're
- 52:50Speaker 6: a man five eleven at the very least.
- 52:53Speaker 4: So I couldn't be a model. I'm sorry. I hate
- 52:55Speaker 4: to shit on your varad or crush your dreams, but no,
- 52:58Speaker 4: because I am five ft ten.
- 53:00Speaker 6: Yeah you just fell on one in short I mean
- 53:03Speaker 6: tech like two inches, but like, yeah.
- 53:06Speaker 4: Really I could not be a model. Sorry. Oh.
- 53:08Speaker 6: The reason being because peop always asked this is like,
- 53:10Speaker 6: so like, let's say a client comes to me and says, okay, well,
- 53:13Speaker 6: like they have one sample size and they say, that's
- 53:16Speaker 6: and it's easier for them to find a talent who
- 53:18Speaker 6: fits that sample size rather than have fifteen different sample
- 53:22Speaker 6: sizes to fit that one talent. You know, so it's
- 53:24Speaker 6: really not it's not my decision. Just like the clients
- 53:27Speaker 6: or just they have their sample sizes. So so yeah,
- 53:31Speaker 6: but so look kind of like looking at who were
- 53:34Speaker 6: looking for both models and actors.
- 53:35Speaker 4: We want to represent two people.
- 53:37Speaker 6: Number one, people who have experience and have a headshot
- 53:39Speaker 6: resume or have a really diverse portfolio if you're a
- 53:42Speaker 6: model or number two. It's okay if you're green, but
- 53:45Speaker 6: you have to you know, be really on top of
- 53:47Speaker 6: your thing. You know, you have to be professional, reliable,
- 53:49Speaker 6: have a personality. So you know, I we will be
- 53:52Speaker 6: representing you know, new faces per se, but they have
- 53:55Speaker 6: to be right on the ball. They've got to you know,
- 53:57Speaker 6: they've got to bring it. So and I have actually
- 53:59Speaker 6: like a whole of your process that I go through
- 54:01Speaker 6: that can kind of weed that out and figure out
- 54:02Speaker 6: who really is. But yeah, so like I said, I,
- 54:05Speaker 6: if you're interested by all means to sunny an email
- 54:07Speaker 6: will at via Agency VI I Eagency dot com and
- 54:10Speaker 6: I'll be happy to send in early application for Well.
- 54:12Speaker 5: See, I'm glad they were talking about this because we
- 54:15Speaker 5: all know casting calls sometimes and they charge for certain things,
- 54:19Speaker 5: you know what I mean. And you and I have
- 54:20Speaker 5: talked about this before where it's like, hey, you know
- 54:22Speaker 5: why don't you come to this open casting call or
- 54:25Speaker 5: you see him in the mall, you know what I mean,
- 54:26Speaker 5: You'll see him on like a wall.
- 54:27Speaker 4: Like hey, we're looking for new faces for this or that.
- 54:30Speaker 4: And then so people like me will come in and
- 54:32Speaker 4: be like, hey, all rah, I could be a you know,
- 54:33Speaker 4: I could be an actor.
- 54:34Speaker 5: Whatever, So I signed, you know, I go and they
- 54:37Speaker 5: want to want to fee.
- 54:39Speaker 4: Well, here's here's the thing.
- 54:41Speaker 5: I've seen this in Philly and New York too, and
- 54:44Speaker 5: certain actors have have been posted on like Facebook, whatever,
- 54:47Speaker 5: Hey I got an agent, now I got a manager,
- 54:49Speaker 5: And I'm like, really this guy like cause So it's
- 54:52Speaker 5: not because forget about talent for a second. I'm gonna
- 54:54Speaker 5: talk about personality. Some of these guys are such loose cannons.
- 54:57Speaker 5: And I mean, like I would never ever cast them
- 55:02Speaker 5: even as a loose cannon. They are a loose cannon.
- 55:03Speaker 5: I wouldn't cast as a loose cannon. So much of
- 55:05Speaker 5: a loose cannon. So even the point I'm for her
- 55:08Speaker 5: to make here is when those types of things happen,
- 55:11Speaker 5: like what what's what are some of the things that
- 55:14Speaker 5: people should look.
- 55:14Speaker 3: For for in case something is a scam or the
- 55:17Speaker 3: red fal so like the other thing that that that
- 55:19Speaker 3: with me opening up five, The reason I actually came
- 55:21Speaker 3: back from from from La was because I was being
- 55:24Speaker 3: told by so many both clients and talent, saying, will
- 55:27Speaker 3: you know there there is a such a need here
- 55:30Speaker 3: for a better agency, someone who knows what they're doing,
- 55:33Speaker 3: who has experience in a bigger market.
- 55:34Speaker 6: But also it's completely honest and transparent and has nothing
- 55:37Speaker 6: to hide, and that's really something we're really really stressing.
- 55:39Speaker 6: I would be going on our Instagram or our Facebook
- 55:41Speaker 6: like very very like we were completely transparent, we have nothing,
- 55:46Speaker 6: nothing to hide. We make our money only or will
- 55:48Speaker 6: make our money only through through agency fees and commissions,
- 55:52Speaker 6: so we only make money when the talent work, when
- 55:54Speaker 6: when they make money. So we will never charge for
- 55:57Speaker 6: any sort of representation fee, no bullshit of sight fees,
- 56:00Speaker 6: like none of this stuff that like even some honest
- 56:03Speaker 6: agencies eventually start tacking on because they get startinting greedy.
- 56:06Speaker 6: So yeah, I would say, if if you're looking out
- 56:08Speaker 6: looking for like trying to to to prevent yourself from
- 56:13Speaker 6: from getting involved with a scam, definitely the biggest thread
- 56:16Speaker 6: flag is is the money. You know, if you have
- 56:18Speaker 6: any sort of upfront costs, and because I mean, if
- 56:21Speaker 6: you run an aency like that, then you have a
- 56:23Speaker 6: talent pool of people who are just willing to pay
- 56:25Speaker 6: that money to get in, not necessarily are they talented,
- 56:28Speaker 6: you know.
- 56:28Speaker 4: So it's uh, that's definitely the biggest reread flag.
- 56:32Speaker 6: Also, I look at the contracts or they're exclusive contracts,
- 56:35Speaker 6: that's a big warning sign. You know, we offer non
- 56:38Speaker 6: exclusive contracts. I don't want to limit anybody. I don't
- 56:40Speaker 6: want to limit our talent. Like, hey, if you you know,
- 56:42Speaker 6: if you are already represented by someone and you want
- 56:44Speaker 6: to go up in New York City, great sign with me.
- 56:46Speaker 4: Most see what we can do. If you know, you
- 56:48Speaker 4: signed with me and there you get an opportunity out
- 56:50Speaker 4: in LA to go work with someone. Yeah, I'm not
- 56:52Speaker 4: gonna limit you. Go do it.
- 56:53Speaker 6: We're gonna have fun, you know, Like like I never
- 56:55Speaker 6: want to limit someone's up you know, opportunities. I just
- 56:58Speaker 6: went the most and the best for our time. So yeah,
- 57:00Speaker 6: there's a few like these warning sciences. Honestly, do your research,
- 57:04Speaker 6: you know, and and ask about that, like what jobs
- 57:06Speaker 6: did they have? They both like, what do you know
- 57:07Speaker 6: who your biggest clients? When you go meet with an
- 57:10Speaker 6: ag you know, who tell us about some of the
- 57:12Speaker 6: most successful models and actors that you've had and what
- 57:14Speaker 6: they've done.
- 57:15Speaker 4: You really got to do your your research. No, And
- 57:17Speaker 4: that's a kind of an ice.
- 57:18Speaker 6: Two is like people who signed with scams, you know,
- 57:21Speaker 6: they just didn't do their homework, you know, like they
- 57:24Speaker 6: are It's because you know, some of these scams provide
- 57:26Speaker 6: all these like services that you could really do for yourself,
- 57:29Speaker 6: but because you know, it's just like an easy and
- 57:32Speaker 6: I don't want to say lazy, but it is almost
- 57:34Speaker 6: like a lazy way of getting into the business without
- 57:37Speaker 6: really knowing many people or they're doing it the right way.
- 57:42Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 5: And also I've seen a lot of it as an
- 57:44Speaker 5: excuse to sell like headshots stuff like the services, you know.
- 57:46Speaker 6: And that's the thing like we never like so for us,
- 57:48Speaker 6: like if you're I will say, if you're in a
- 57:50Speaker 6: model are actor looking to get into this, like you've
- 57:52Speaker 6: got to do a ton of work on your own
- 57:54Speaker 6: before you come to an agency, before you go to
- 57:56Speaker 6: an agent. You've got to get your headshot, you got
- 57:58Speaker 6: to get your resume, you gotta get your folio. If
- 58:00Speaker 6: you're a model, like you have to do so much
- 58:02Speaker 6: work on your own, Like you're getting an agent. It's
- 58:04Speaker 6: a step up, you know, Like, but you've got to
- 58:07Speaker 6: pay your duce first, so you know, you can't just
- 58:09Speaker 6: come in with nothing, like because then I can't market
- 58:11Speaker 6: you if you have no imagery, then like, I'm not
- 58:12Speaker 6: gonna charge. I will never ask for money to you know, uh,
- 58:16Speaker 6: to get you photography, but instead I'll tell you go
- 58:19Speaker 6: get some decent photography like and here. And I have
- 58:21Speaker 6: a list of photographers so I know and I trust,
- 58:23Speaker 6: and I'll I'll give them to you. But they charge,
- 58:25Speaker 6: And I mean that's not my business. And you know,
- 58:27Speaker 6: but maybe you have a friend who's a really up
- 58:29Speaker 6: and coming photographer or you have a connection, Yeah, shoot
- 58:31Speaker 6: with them. I just need something to market you with
- 58:34Speaker 6: and I can't market you with nothing. But I'm never
- 58:36Speaker 6: going to charge for that.
- 58:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
- 58:38Speaker 5: I've a couple of weeks ago, I saw a photo
- 58:42Speaker 5: online from this from a tall agent agency and uh,
- 58:48Speaker 5: they were saying something about, you know, we're casting models
- 58:50Speaker 5: or this and that, and I looked at some of
- 58:52Speaker 5: these models and I'm like, yep, wait a minute, here,
- 58:57Speaker 5: I said, am I missing something? And uh, after this
- 59:00Speaker 5: is over, I'm gonna show you the I'm gonna cause
- 59:03Speaker 5: I don't I don't know about this.
- 59:05Speaker 4: Well yeah no, and I mean, like that is so sad.
- 59:09Speaker 4: I see that happen. And sometimes the nicest thing you
- 59:11Speaker 4: can say to someone is no, you know, like sometimes.
- 59:14Speaker 6: You know and yeah, like and that's where I think
- 59:16Speaker 6: a just get like a bad rap and casting directors
- 59:19Speaker 6: get a bad rap. Like I know, as much as
- 59:20Speaker 6: I love Lalla Land, like I hate that ship. When
- 59:23Speaker 6: they're like sitting on casting directors are.
- 59:24Speaker 4: Like, oh you know, like next you know, like, oh
- 59:26Speaker 4: that the woman's so mean. It's like, well, yeah, if
- 59:28Speaker 4: you in your position, then you be that mean too,
- 59:30Speaker 4: because like you have to be you know, like sorry,
- 59:33Speaker 4: we can I say that.
- 59:34Speaker 5: I have never encountered a casting director like that ever.
- 59:37Speaker 4: Is that just weird? Like I have never kind of yeah,
- 59:40Speaker 4: it's it's very like stereotypical, like and I have I have.
- 59:43Speaker 4: I have met a few who have been similar.
- 59:46Speaker 6: But you know, but at the end of the day,
- 59:48Speaker 6: I said, even if you were to act that way, hey,
- 59:50Speaker 6: you know you can and you have to in order
- 59:52Speaker 6: to like get the if you were seeing like that,
- 59:54Speaker 6: if you saw nothing but talent, all day.
- 59:58Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: You would be very short with people too, and you
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: would be very like you know, because you know immediately
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: what you the client wants or doesn't once, so like
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: you know, like it's easy to shoot on casting, but
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: they have such a hard job, you know, And I
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: mean it's not mar really my job. I just like
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: I'm an agent, so I work for the casting directors.
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: But you know, it's just I do not envy them,
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: like that is a a very thankless and like it's
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: it's easy to judge them and be.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: Like, oh, you're so callous. They're so cruel, but it's
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: like they have to be and a lot of people are,
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: but you have to be.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: So let me ask you this when you audition for
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: Game Over, which is was I was I good at casting?
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Great? Yeah? You were great?
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: Like said, you were like I said, and there I
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: very rarely run into that that scenario, but you know,
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: but I still you should go in expecting expecting it
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: to be that like yeah, you know, like like so
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: don't get your you know, don't get upset if you
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: know the casting director does just say I mean like
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: say next you like, that's just part of the industry,
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: you know, and like it's just don't take it personally,
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: you know, like yeah, you know to going back, Like
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: so there are a lot of you know, the summers,
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: you have to tell people know, you have to tell
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: people know, and you know, and.
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: That was big noise outside of ays and gentlemen.
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: But you know, like and that's I think, you know,
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: you can tell a scam by just looking at their
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: talent roster, go to their new faceboard and see who's
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: on there and just take a look. Can you kind
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: of can you can tell? And it's right when we
- 1:01:26Speaker 6: open up, we're really gonna be focusing on quality over quantity.
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: So if we open up and we have fifteen really solid,
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: great looking people who are also re reliable and professional,
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: that's great. I'll just stick with us fifteen. I don't
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: want to flood my boards. I don't want forty fifty
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: sixty people who I don't know are going to show up.
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: Like I tell all my talent all the time, I
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: am not your employer. I am your business partner. And
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: I do not go into business with someone who I
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: do not trust one hundred percent. So you know, like,
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: I have to trust you as a person. I got
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: to make sure you show up on time, you know,
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: I gotta make sure that you in addition to being
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: great looking or talented, you know, so there's a lot
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: of aspects to being a talent.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Yeah, there really is.
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: Well, and uh, you know, I I know where we
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: were sort of talking about all this stuff, and you know,
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: I also wanted to ask I know, not that sort
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: of just shift gears we were starting. No, no, it's
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: not a bad okay, but we know four gigs. Look
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: at my notes. What I wanted to ask you and
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: four for gigs. I know we've sort of kind of
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: talked about. This is the writers group, that mean when
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: I started, and you know, I think that's another avenue
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: of creating opportunities. And what are some of the things
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: that you took away from that writers group that we started?
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: Like about starting writers groups because we don't do it anymore.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: You moved out to l A. I got burned out
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: from everything in my life at that point, and I
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: was kind of like, get away from me, everybody.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Well you know why, I mean, right, so.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: But but you know, what are some of the things
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: that you took away from that group.
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: You know what, honestly, I think I didn't really expect
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: their writing group to be so much fun. I was
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: really I really loved and enjoy going to our meetings,
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: not even to talk about writing, but just to like
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: hang out with like a great group of people. And
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: that was really something that I really loved and and
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: enjoy doing. And just to just be around hanging out,
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: even busting each other balls and stuff like that. And
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: that's fine, you know, but you know, I learned a
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: lot from that group. And and see, like it's hard
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: sometimes even just yourself to to stay motivated to write,
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: even if you did start the group, like you just
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: sometimes you just lack the motivation. And then what I've
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: kind of come to learn is like, you know, don't
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: ever say that like you don't have time for something
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: you should in stay say that like that is not
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: a priority for me right now, you know, Like and
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: it because you know, it's with any scenary, whether it's
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: like uh, you know, someone you're dating or you know,
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: or writing, you know, it's like, oh, it's not that
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: you don't have time for that person, you don't have
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: time to write, you do, it's just it's not a priority,
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: right now, and I think that's okay, that's okay to admit.
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: You know, I don't think you should really force writing.
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: You know, yeah, it's good to be in a habit.
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: And I think you gotta look at too, like what
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: your end goal is and what you really want to
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: make happen. And especially as a writer, you really gotta
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: I don't know, you gotta. It's it's easy to write
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: these like huge sci fi epics and things like that,
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: but you know, at the end of the day, it's like, well,
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: what you're you're really limiting your chance of getting made,
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: and that sucks. It sucks for a writer, especially because
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: you're like, well, I've really got a compromise now, and
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: that's that you have to compromise your artistic in negrity.
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: And you know, I know a lot of writers who
- 1:04:18Speaker 6: are like, oh, well, like I will never sell out.
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: I will never, you know, I could never. It's like, well,
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: then you're never gonna get your movie, mate, I'm sorry.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: Guys like me who are like, you want me to
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: sell out? Where the fuck do I? Sorry?
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: I will sign right now you want me to, but no,
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: but like not for price, just like ah, that's the
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: exactly that suns of the whole bod gets right there.
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: I'm selling out everybody. I'm selling out now, uh I
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: you know you're all kidding aside, When whenever you know,
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: I sit down and write a script, I always make
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: sure if I'm gonna write something it's like a big
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: budget and I know it's going to be end up
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: being a big budget, Twitter, million dollar whatever. Always make
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: sure I realize, I say to myself, this is like
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: a calling card script or a script you enter into
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: a contest that could get you to the producers. And
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: I've had friends who've done that very well because they
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: wrote a script. The budget would have to be at
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: least like one one point fifty. You have to get
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: one of the top people in the world to do it, like,
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: meaning that the people who still can get movies made,
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: which is a which is a list.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: By the way, it's getting shorter and shorter.
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: It's really like to that budget, it really is getting
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: shorter and shorter. If you don't have like a certain
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: somebody on there, like an a list actor, and that
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: list is probably probably count on two hands, it's not
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: going to get made. But so what they do is
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: even goes a calling card script and then finally, maybe
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: someday if there's another star that Hollywood can can in
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: a sort of I don't want to say manufacturer, but
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: maybe faster. Yeah, because you know, they see Hollywood for
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: all their money and all the marketing, they can't actually
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: choose the stars because it's what movies get. You know.
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: The public goes to see it because what that's the
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: new megastar. Harrison Ford when he was in Star Wars
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: didn't even think it was anything. You know, it wasn't
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: gonna be that big. And he went to on vacation,
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: I think, to morocle Go and they were playing it
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: and there was a big poster of him right outside.
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: He goes, well, he goes, I think this is a
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: being of something amazing. And he said after that that
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: people were just you know, and then they became Star Wars.
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: They did Emire strikes Back, and then you know, and
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: now now he crashed his planes on a golf coasts
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: but seriously.
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: Said, it's still like discouraging it and just like disheartened
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: to know that, like Han Solo is not Han Sol.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Did you ever see the panel he did for Henders
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: Game at a comic con and somebody raised it, and
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: he goes and listen as the Monerisa and listen, everybody,
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: We're not going to talk about Star Wars. This is
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: about enders game. First question out of the gate was
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: would Hans Solo make a good pilot Nder's Game? And
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: he goes, well, no, because he's a rogue. Second question,
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: would Indiana Jones make a good pilot and news game?
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: And he goes that's the end of this. He left
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: because he knew he was just gonna get killed.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: And the third question, but I would have with Decker
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: from Blade Runner make a good pilot because you could
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: see where it was going.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: I I love it like Bruno is not a very
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: good movie. But the best part of that movie is
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: when he goes up to Arison Ford is like, fuck off.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: It's such like an old crimudge.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: No, but.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: I was looking at promoting the big interview with Arison
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: Ford Christ. But you know what they want to think
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: about that writers group is will is you start to
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: realize that it's some of the things that I've I've
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: as I was, you know, taking doing the writers group,
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: I was taking maybe taking a course or you know,
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: talking to the people who are out in la or
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: they're doing.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: Their own courses or what have you.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: One thing is always that you don't there's you shouldn't
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: be obsessed with rules. I think that's so. I mean,
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: I think we all grew in that group. I think
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: every single person got better.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: They also have to listen to each other too, you know,
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: you got to the definitely have to be receptive advice.
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: And and I say, like, if one person is saying
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: something like okay, it may or may not be true,
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: but if like everybody in the group is saying something,
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: then it's probably true, you know. Like, and I think
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: that's that's comes you know, you really and it's hard.
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: I think that's hard for writers to do because you
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: don't want to come. We don't want to change. Yeah,
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: And you know, sometimes we've all been there, like we
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: we think the script's coming, like really go over really well,
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: everyone's gonna love it, and then you come in and
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: everyone's just like piston and shitting on it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: He was like every time for me. No one wasn't
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: every time or non episod of the time.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: I honestly, I'm glad that the one script that I
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: wrote that everyone liked was that crispy script.
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: And I'm glad that nobody knew who wrote it, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: everyone was glad, and Krispy was like he didn't know
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: who wrote it. It was that it was you that
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: was like, no, we know.
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: I will say, like I like our writer script because
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: it was so genuine, Whereas now, you know, after living
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: out in LA, it's like Jesus, you go to a
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: bar and you're like, what are you doing, Like I'm
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: a writer and you're like okay, like yeah, one of
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: like a thousand that I've met today, you know. And
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: I think thinks that it's just it was nice to
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: just actually like do something and to be proactive and
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: just be a group that was just very sincere. And
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: I think, like, you know, we were all in it
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: for the right reasons. Nothing else is to create, you know.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: And I think too that a lot of writers, I think,
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: speaking as we talk about rules, I think the main
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: problem with a lot of the screenwriters, whether it be
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: in LA or New York or Philadelphia, I think everyone
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: now has sort of gotten the quote unquote rule books
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: and they're all writing for templates. Yeah, And I think
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: now because I've I've tried to write scripts do templates
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: just to see how it would work, you know what
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: I mean, like you got to try it before, you know.
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: You know, so I tried it and I was like,
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: this was okay. I wouldn't do this again because I mean,
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: you're really like, what the hell you're following? You know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: step one blah blah blah. That so too and it's
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: just for me. Yeah, And it's just I you know,
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: I look back some of my favorite movies and I
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: don't remember any of those guys, because I, you know,
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: I'm a you know, I tend to really get into
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: what what what the project is like, you know what
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: I mean, Like if I sing a movie I really
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: like nowadays we call it stalking.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: But I I was like, you know, now, because like
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: The Nice Guys, I thought The Nice Guys was the
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: best movie last year. I thought that was a phenomenal movie.
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: I liked it, I which I was a little I
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: walked away a little disappointed. I didn't think I liked
- 1:10:20Speaker 6: this as much. And there's a lot of people who
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: I really a lot of critics to who I I follow,
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: who that was their favorite movie of the year.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: So I'm not. It was a really good movie.
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: I really just I didn't like it as much as
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: I wanted to. For me, the Witch was was my
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: favorite movie of last year. I just thought that was
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: like the horror film of the past decade. It was
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: like so like damn, like it also feels like generally
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: satanic too, which is pretty badass. But no, I think
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: going back to that, like I've read some advice about
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: screen rain it was like, don't worry so much about
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: the act structure. Just keep building.
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: So long as things are happening in building and progressing,
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: then you're okay, you know.
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: And I think that to me is that's how I
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: kind of, you know, took it and just kind of
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: really took that the heart because I'm not really good
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: at like the three act structure. I so it looks
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: like confuses me, to be honest, like because any like
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: you have this this structure and then like people try
- 1:11:09Speaker 6: to like like compare like the best movies in the
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: past ten years of this and like, okay, really can
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: like I can see like that inciting incident yeah at
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: page twenty.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I get that.
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: I think that needs to happen, But like I just
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: don't really, I think some of you, like they try
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: to force that template onto every film and it doesn't
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: really work.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: Well, you know, I've realized this, and it's also from
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: just talking to a lot of different people.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: One thing is certain.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: Some people who do that, who take a movie and
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: they put it into the wadever teenplate or whatever, they're brilliant.
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: They're they're not really screenwriting gurus or teachers, what have you.
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: What they are is they're brilliant story analysts. They can
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: take Star Wars or they take Jaws, or they take
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: Indiana Jones and they put it to that template and
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: they sort of talk about it a little more deeper,
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: and then they go to another deeper level and.
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Hey, great, you know you know what.
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: That's great, we've just deconstructed Indiana Jones and Jaws. But
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: what does that teach us how to write our own scripts?
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: And I mean really it's like a replication of It's like, hey,
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: if I take a car and I and I totally
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: take it apart, that's gonna teach me how to build
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: a car. It'll teach me about building a chassis maybe
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: and maybe about how a car would actually work, because
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: it'll be an internal combustion engine. We put gasoline. It's
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: on four wheels and as a chassis.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: But as far as the design of it goes, let
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: someone else dissect your script too, like it's fine.
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: Like I I one of my short films was made
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: by a group and intructional film students and they actually
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: found me on a website and they were like hey,
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: you know, and I'm like, oh, I'm in the area,
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: and They're like, oh, would you like to come in
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: and talk to the like the class because they would
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: love to have you.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: I was like, oh shit, like yeah, it'd be great,
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: Like I'd be happy with to you.
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: So I went into I talked to this it's fool
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: big class to students and they're just like bigging apart
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: My script looks right and like as far as like dissecting,
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: like asking questions and they're like, well, what did you
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: mean by this?
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: And what do you mean by that? And I was
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: like I don't know. I was fucking drunken high when.
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: I wrote that, Like I don't know what I did, Like, oh,
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: I met it, like like you just like looked in
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: into it as much as you know, like you wanted
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: to look into it, you know, and like and people
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: it's so it's easy to do and somebody's like, you
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: don't even realize there's right that you're doing that, and
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: like best to let someone else, Like I said, yeah,
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: let someone else pick it up part and and and
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: get game meaning from it.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: You don't have to do that, just just right drunken
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: high hu at the time. At the time, what what
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: script was I ever read? I don't think it did.
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: Actually that was my It was like reparations or something
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: that was like it's about it's like a interracial, uh,
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: gay couple during the posts Civil War. It was like, yeah,
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: this is really commonly not that good, to be honest.
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: And the film was filmed but never saw the light
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: of day.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know if the director failed
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: the glass or what.
- 1:13:46Speaker 6: But like they had filmed, like it was a significant
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: budget too for the film too, and like they how
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: much I want to say it was about.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: My grand really listen, yeah, that's as like a kickstarter
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: and they have people invest in it and like and
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: I never saw any of the footage of it. Oh,
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: they really bummed out about it too.
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: So I do remember when House Horrors got picked up
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: by that podcast and they actually had a life that
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: was fucking cool.
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: I actually had to take that script down because I'm like,
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: now that I'm opening up my own business, like durfy,
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: what was out in the world and that.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: Was Did you guys to take that on that podcast too?
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: You know, I don't know if I did. I should,
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: I should get on that.
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: It's something I know because I asked them to make
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: some changes to that, and like, I think as a writer,
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: you progress and that you're definitely looking back of it,
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: like it's just not like a script that I and
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: so I enjoyed, but there's some smaller details. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: I wouldn't have written that now, you know, like things,
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: things change, culture changes, I change, you know, like evolved.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: Well, Everyone'm going a linked on the show notes, So
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: listen to that as quickly as you can, so Will
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: will before Will gets that taken down because that's censored.
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, you actually listen listen to the script, like,
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: I still have a fun die with it. I just
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: you know, I just don't think. I don't think a
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: lot of people would understand my either. A few more
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: like what the movies I like to go see and
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: it's like, right.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: I think I think it's it's chine honestly.
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: I mean you're talking about the guy who had a
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: script called Slay the Gay Away, which was a a
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: which was another satire script about you know, a slasher
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: to play the game.
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: Well, I think there's a lot of times like and
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: I've done it too, where like I want the satire
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: to come through, and I'm not necessarily sure if it did,
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: you know, and that's you know, yeah, you see it
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: a certain way, but how it's interpreted can be different
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: and completely opposite of how you meant it to be, so,
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: you know, like and I think they have to be
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: very mindful.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: Of of that.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's very true.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: Well, very true, which is why you know, like's competitions,
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: I think too, they're looking for certain scripts because like
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: certain scripts I would never send other ones.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: I made that mistake one time.
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: I actually sent a horror script that I wrote, but
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: it was like a comedy horror into one of those competitions,
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: and actually.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: They teed off on poor bullus Man. They were actually
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: went I cried for days.
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: I went to I asimited a screenplay to one of
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: those film pesitive horror film festivals as well. Didn't even
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: make it through like the in the first round. And
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: then I went to a movie when I was in
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: LA I actually went to their like film festival and
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: saw like the top movie that had won for them, and.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: It was garbage. It was like terrible.
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: It's like I actually it was like even like an
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: aesthetical level, it was so loud and so like the
- 1:16:13Speaker 6: noise was so like it was just constant, like shrieking.
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: I walked away with a migraine afterwards, Like this is
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: like so insulting on several levels, Like so yeah, you know,
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: the hell with it?
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: You know, like they want to find what they want,
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: did it?
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: And if you try to be different or crazier, like
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: especially my writing, I like to kind of push the
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: envelope a little bit.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: You know, people don't that's not gonna bode well, well,
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: I think That's why I always tell people, got to
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: pick and choose what contest you went, because that feed
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: no matter what is an expense sixty.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: Yeah it does, That's what I mean.
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: So that's why when I whenever I hear somebody say,
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: well I got this one script, and when I enter
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: in these ten competitions, and I'm like don't. Don't don't
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: think things smaller smaller, less is more. And because I
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: know a girl who won like seventeen competitions and it
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: never got her job.
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: It was just her network. Yeah, but yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: that's very true, very true. Networking.
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: It's hard, I mean, said Streamlin. It's just a whole
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: different bar of jar. But luckily with the Internet, like
- 1:17:08Speaker 6: I said, you don't have to be in La. Yeah, awesome,
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: Like I said, you can be here and right in
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: the next Ward Rings screenplay. And that's that's what's so
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: awesome about the Internet. And that's even that's where the
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: film issue is changing so much because you don't have
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: to beat in La anymore, which is what I tell everyone.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: Don't you don't have to be there, don't have to
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: be there Atlanta. You're not good to Atlanta. You know
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: they're filming tons of shit there, well dead all the
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: marvel fields and go to Atlanta, you know, like, don't,
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: don't you don't have to be there? Well, I want to.
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: I want to take you guys a vot of confidence
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: will that I'm gonna write my aword winning screenplays.
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: Here right now in Philadela.
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: Yeah, asd on the mat well, I remember when we
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: were doing Game Over and I I was we got
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: in the paper, we got a bunch of different papers
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: and websites and this that The amount of people I
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: had bugging me for shit was unreal. And I still
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: have people coming to me, you know, from time to
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: time about this podcast. Yeah, not a bad way because
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: all the people who who tune in, I love you all.
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: But I know, like people who like message me and
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: they're like saying shit, like hey, Dave, can you get
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: this a producer to come talk to me? I had
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: casin Ovis on here, who did Dallas Buyers Club. He's
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: an alist producer, and they're like, hey, can we pitch
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: him something? Can I get his contact info?
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: Oh yeah, sure. I've built up all these relationships just
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: to give him to you guy. Why not?
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: And that's like peoplen' understand like how relationships are work
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: and and some relationships, and especially say this as an Asian,
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: like are very new and very fresh and like you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: like you don't want to test that like a relationship
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: just yeah, Like you can't.
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: Remember that one guy who I won't name, who we
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: always were talking about that he always seemed like a
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: very needy person here, I'm gonna mau his name to you.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and let me tell you man no.
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: Like but also like I as an ancient you can
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: sense someone being fake from a mile away, and I
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: hate it about it. It's the worth part of my
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: job is when people are just like you know that
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: they just want something out of you, and yeah, it
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: reeks like it's just it's like the stench of just
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: like of uh, just neediness and just like it's just
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: it's it's disingenuous, Like I tell people all the time,
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: like like and if people come up to be like
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: well like oh you know, like like hey, I'm you know,
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: I'm an actor, and like let's just sit down and
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: have a beer and let let's be friends. I want
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: to continue we won't talk about the industry, but let's
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: just chill out and be friends. Like no, I don't
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: want to be your friend. I got enough friends. Like
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: if you came to me it was like, well, I
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: want to pick your brain about you know, acting, your modeling,
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: Let me buy you a beer, let me kiss you're
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: ass for like an hour, I'd be like thanks for
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: saying that, absolutely, you know, like I'd be happy.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: That's how I got you in this podcast. I lude
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: you with cheesesteaks and as kissing. I'm like, but it's
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: just so easy.
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: I feel like you don't need to pretend to be
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: someone you're not. You know, you don't, like there's enough
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: people being fake and disingenuous in the world right now.
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: You just be real and honest with people, and it's
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: really refreshing to dig you that in any profession, you know,
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: like just like, cut through the bullshit, through the bullshit.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: and now back to the show, will Ball.

- 1:21:18Speaker 5: usually what happens. Usually in the course of conversations, these
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: questions get answered unless it's something completely outlandish, like the
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: first question for Casim was how can I pitch you?
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: I was like, and I told him, I said, and
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: he's like, you know, let's just ask it. And I said,
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: all right, And I asked him mat and he goes,
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: if you're really good, he goes, you'll know how to
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: pitch me. That was how he answered it, and I
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: thought that was so It's a cool way to answer yeah,
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: because I was like, well, I got his contact info
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: now No, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding, but but yeah,

- 1:22:02Speaker 5: be I'm gonna be living like a street some corner
