Transcript
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall, and Tristan Kurt Wilson just will smith the heck out of the longhorns.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: Wow, very, very uh current event, very on topic, sir.
- 0:57SPEAKER_05: Applaud.
- 0:58SPEAKER_05: Applaud applaud for you for knowing your pop culture.
- 1:01SPEAKER_05: It only took me, it only took me like all day to figure out that opening line.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: I know, I know you wrote that joke down days ago and had to reverse it multiple times.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: You look yourself in the mirror and said, You're gonna, he's gonna will smith it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_05: He's gonna will smith it.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: But we are we're not gonna talk about Will Smith.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: No, no, that's you're you're not here for cultural uh re-reviews, you're here to count college world series rings with us because apparently we won two of them uh this over this past weekend.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, according to Longhorn Nation, uh most recently the winners of the college world series are Texas Tech twice, uh Texas State and Texas AM all won a college world series this year.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Remarkable stuff.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, Kurt Wilson just smacked the crap out of Longhorns.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: This is a massive opening series victory in the Big 12 for Texas Tech.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, we we could talk about the memes and everything, but like this this is so big for this year's baseball team uh to get a win against what was the number two team in the country, just right off the bat to start Big 12.
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, uh obviously, other than beating one of your big in-state rivals, uh obviously Texas is used to losing, like you said, to Texas State, one of their premier in-state rivals and uh the AGs not that long ago.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Um, it's just it's crazy that all these teams are winning College World Series and Super Bowls with an NUT isn't who's the premier brand here?
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm really trying to ask, like, what's going on there?
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: But no, you're absolutely right, man.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: Going into this weekend, you know, most people obviously wrote us off as not going to win this.
- 2:33SPEAKER_05: I'm sure many tech fans were as well.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: I know a lot of tech fans probably had the idea that you know, we we if we're lucky, we can get one off, you know, because this Texas team is really looking like the real deal.
- 2:42SPEAKER_05: And I I know us in the no doubters were like that didn't happen, we are winning this series.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: And look what we went and did, man.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: And it's just it's a great way to start off the season because a lot of people were, I don't want to say riding us off.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, we were we came into the season ranked.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: I don't want to say that like we're just this underdog that everyone was doubting.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: It's just you know, we weren't the team that a lot of people were picking to win the Big 12 and going to Omaha this year.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: It just there's definitely lists out there that had us there, but not everyone.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: So to go in there and then beat the conference favorites and the favorites go to Omaha and possibly win it all, and just in fascinating and spectacular fashion, it just sends a huge shockwave across the conference and of course college baseball in general.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean for Texas at least, you know, they were really highly touted going into the preseason.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: They were uh, you know, thought of as you know one of the best baseball teams coming into this year.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: And for us to do what we did, take over, you know, our home field and get those first two wins.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Yes, we got absolutely slaughtered in the third game, but the way we won the first two games made up for everything.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, and this is such this is so good for the Big 12 conference race.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, now we're starting ahead of UT.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Now UT's playing catch up, and you know, with with really four teams that can, you know, are at the top of this conference right now in TCU, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is a great start to get this series victory.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a great way to put it, man.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: The pressure is more so on them than it is us now, you know, whenever it comes to winning series.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: So uh obviously that we still have to go and do what we have to.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: We still had to go because we our next uh conference matchup is against the Kansas Jayhawks, uh, expected to be the worst team in the conference this season.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: Uh so we got to go get our jobs done there.
- 4:21SPEAKER_05: You know, last season we unfortunately did drop a few that uh just shouldn't have happened, it cost us the Big 12 trophy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: So I definitely would the the dream of the hardware is very much there now.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: And with you know, we trust him to have luck to put together the team, especially after this past weekend.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: We figured it out.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: I we really have, and our scoring abilities just keep us in the games pretty much every time it appears.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's not like Texas played bad.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're no, you know, people have talked about their pitching and they have a few guys hurt and everything like that.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: You know, they don't have as deep a bullpen as they would like, but you know, they hit really well this whole series, and we still managed to squeak out a few victories here.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: And I mean, you know, the star of the weekend was our guy Kurt Wilson.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, nobody I don't I was trying to think of this.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Who's had a better weekend than Kurt Wilson just had ever?
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, we don't even have to talk about sports.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: This man stole home to win the a walk-off steal of home uh to win the first game and then walk off grand slam the very next day.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: This man is a living legend in Lubbock, Texas.
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's no way that sequence has happened ever in the history of baseball, like two games in a row, it gets in two huge games.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: You know, there's just no way that's happened.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: And and shame on any place that ever charges that man for a beer in Lubbock, Texas, ever again.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: Because holy cow, did he steal the show?
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: And I mean, that's hey, hey, it was see what I did there, yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: But absolute legend status, you know.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: Obviously, he had his huge game against Oklahoma State in 2019 as well.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: I know all y'all have heard this now, it's it's what everybody's talking about right now, and he deserves it.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: He deserves to be our he have our ears talked off about it because what a player, what an absolute weekend.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: And like you said, I don't know if we can he unfortunately he has peaked in his life, and that just that's not to say he can go and do great things, but I don't think he could ever literally do anything better than that stretch of 24 hours ever again in his life.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, the man had a a series of all series here.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, so it's gonna be fun to really watch him and the rest of the team as it goes, but um, just a fantastic opening series, big 12 win against the Longhorns.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: It's just another sport that we're better at than them, you know.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: It doesn't seem like we're ever gonna lose to them.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, let's not talk about game three.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, hey, the series is what matters.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: I know a lot of Longhorn fans will say, like, oh, well, we at least we ran, you know, run ruled you at the end.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: But I mean, again, I we get it.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: It's your Super Bowl.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: You're gonna try to get every little bit you can, all right.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: But no, absolutely spectacular weekend.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: I can't wait for the Kansas Jayhawks up in Lawrence now, too.
- 6:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we went ahead and took took care of business against our win midweek uh opponent as well.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: We crushed Stephen F.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Austin.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Those poor Jacks from Nakado just had a long trip, and uh sadly we had to send them home with a couple of enormous L's.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a combined uh 32 runs scored in the two games against Stephen F.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Austin for Texas Tech, two their combined six.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: So, you know, the Lumberjacks, uh tough scene for the Lumberjacks, but uh we're really putting it on teams, and we're sitting here at 22 and five, and you know, you talk about the first three games that we started off against Michigan, Auburn, and uh Arizona, and a lot of a lot of national baseball college baseball guys were uh not very high on this Texas Tech team.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: You know, we were falling in the rankings, we were kind of in the teens to 20s area, and now we boosted all the way back up to seven, five.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: I've seen in some polls, but I think D1 baseball has us at seven right now, and uh it's I mean, it's absolutely impressive.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: This team's turnaround, and you just look at that record and you know the games we have coming towards us, we could be at 30 wins here pretty soon.
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: Fully, man.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: It's kind of an inverse from uh our opponent this past weekend.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: And uh Longhorn started off the season very hot, you know.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: They're like, Are they ever gonna lose again?
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: kind of talk from their fans.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: And uh now they're completely rolling in the dust, like they just they can barely get on their feet anymore.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: And while we are like walking around just taking heads off of that, not threateningly, I meant I meant like just we're we're destroying teams.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: That's a much better phrase, please.
- 8:14SPEAKER_05: That was not a violent call to violence or anything like that.
- 8:18SPEAKER_05: But I do hope we smack the birds, you know, figuratively violently.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: So, but yeah, uh but yeah, dude, absolutely.
- 8:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, we're on absolute roll and a lot of momentum going on right now.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: We know Tim Tadlock is starting to figure out this team and how they work and and when to put what pitcher in at what times, and obviously figuring out the batting order and what works against each team.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: So, but buddy, it's just I I hate to tell the listeners we're really good at baseball again.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: It's it's so nice going from one sport you're already really good at to another sport you're already really good at from arguably better at, you know.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, I mean, we're yeah, people talk about our basketball program, it's fantastic.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: We're gonna recap all that stuff here in a second, but uh our baseball program is top tier right now in all of college sport.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, college baseball, we are just an absolute dynamite program.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the consistency is unbelievable this past decade, and it's all because of the skipper.
- 9:09SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, it was just I'm really I'm I'm really happy that it's baseball season.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: I'm kind of glad that you know basketball season has kind of you know moved on so we can kind of put all our focus into the next sport.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: I don't mean like I'm I'm happy it's over, it's just you know it's kind of I'm kind of ready to pour my energy somewhere else, you know.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: I feel that basketball's my favorite sport, so I'll always, you know, this time of year is kind of lull for me, but it is nice to have a really good college baseball team to root for.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: But right, you know, both you and me are not big MLB guys, so it's just kind of like okay, you know, move on to the next one.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, no, uh really, really good series for Texas Tech baseball.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: Let's keep it rolling.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Um, unfortunate end to the year for the Texas Tech basketball team.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, we fall in the Sweet 16 to Duke.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is not news, but we lose 78 to 73.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, it was a tough game, but man, this team was so much fun to watch all season long.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: It was a team that we did not expect to get anywhere really near here.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you know, it just kind of shows where we are as a program.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: And I'm just I'm so happy for all these guys and uh happy I got to watch them in the Texas Tech uniform.
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude, I I could have said it my better myself.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: I I'm completely completely with you.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: I was obviously disappointed at the end of that dude game, but I you know, honestly, I wasn't that torn up about it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: You know, I went I went to bed, you know, like it was just like I just telling my fiance that just meant, man, what a fun season.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: I'm I wasn't even torn up about it because it's just how much more could you ask in year one of a brand new coach and absolute turnover, um, especially compared to the last summer.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: You know, we're talking about like uh a an our our program was a skeleton at best, and we we just had a this helmsman come in, you know, retaining his position or being promoted into the position to just fix everything and brings us to the sweet 16.
- 10:55SPEAKER_05: I mean uh we we would have been begging for a sweet 16 year just a few years ago, and here we are disappointed with it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_05: And I don't want everyone to get to the point where that's not good enough because it absolutely is good enough, especially for year one.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: I had a great I do, it was a great season, I had a lot of fun, and I I just there's nothing to be upset about in my eyes.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I look at it a few different ways.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: It's like I had so much stock in this team, and I really, really thought this was a final four team, and you know, and that's you know, it stinks to not go as far as you believe your team can go, but also you look at that opponent we played in Duke that is now sitting at the final four, probably the favorite to win the whole thing right now.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, that team, that team's damn good, and you know, it's hard to beat a team with five NBA players on it, it just is.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: And right, they made the shots when it counted, and we did not, and uh, that's kind of what it came down to.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, Jeremy Roach made everything down the stretch.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Bancaro was huge, they started going to Mark Williams, but I I think my favorite part of that game was the chess match between Mark Adams and Coach K.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, they were blow after blow with one another, adjustment after adjustment.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: You know, K threw in a zone that threw us off for a little bit, but then we figured it out, and then you know, they switched up and started going to Mark Williams a little down low.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Then we kind of figured that out a little bit.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, it was it's it's really nice seeing because at the beginning of the year we didn't know what Coach Adams was going to be as a head coach.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: We didn't, and this man is proving that he can do it with the best of them in Coach Cheshetsky.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: So I, you know, I was super happy with Mark Adams and the whole team, and you know, there were some bad performances in that last game, but it it overall it was such a fantastic season, and uh, you know, really got the fan base involved, and we had some great moments and some great times.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: So uh the the good thing about it is that we're not going anywhere and we're not done yet by any means.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I think the way the way I look at it is whenever you're knocked out of the tournament and you're already really excited about the next season, I think that says volumes about where the program's at and how you feel about it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: Because as soon as it ended, I was just sitting there thinking, Oh my god, I can't wait to fall in love with another group of players, I can't wait to see who becomes the star of the team next time, who's the leaders.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: So I I think I think that's a much better place to be at as a fan rather than sulking in disappointment.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: Like it was I wasn't watching the Duke Arkansas game, just sitting there going, That should just be used freaking riffs, kind of thing.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: And I was I was just like, Oh man, wow, well, Duke's really, really good, aren't they?
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, we saw that like that against us, and like you said, man, they came in and scored the shots, but it mattered.
- 13:39SPEAKER_05: What can you do when your defense is still locking them down and they're sinking them?
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: There's not much you can do, and unfortunately, that was happening.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: So, but like you said, man, it's so good to have a genius, a guy that cares about his school and community leading this program.
- 13:51SPEAKER_05: I have all the faith in the world that we're gonna have a lot of fun in the offseason watching recruits and transfers.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: So I have no concerns moving forward.
- 13:57SPEAKER_05: I am at a 10 out of 10 on the fan happiness scale.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: And and so, you know, special shout out to the seniors, the guys that we're not gonna see again in a red raider uniform.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: It's sad, but we were happy that you know they were here at all.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: So Bryson Williams, Adonis Arms, Davion Warren, uh Marcus Sanosova, those guys are for sure going to be gone next year because they're out of eligibility.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: But uh special shout out to those guys, and then you know, as the offseason of college basketball is these days, it's been an absolute roller coaster already, um, with three major decisions right here uh that have already come out.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Um, the first of which being Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: has officially entered the transfer portal.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, possibly looking for a new home, possibly returning.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, but what was what was your kind of your instant reaction when you saw how quickly he entered the portal and just the fact that he entered the portal in the first place?
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: I think the my my immediate fan reaction was the shock of the speed of it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I think I was kind of with a lot of people, whatever.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: I was just shocked that he did this before they even touched down in Lubbock.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: I I I personally maybe I'm just naive to the system, but I just couldn't understand why you couldn't get home and celebrate with the fans in the community in your team and just uh take in the season you just had and then move forward with your future.
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: I I was just a little disappointed in that, but maybe I'm just not prevy to the way the transfer portal works on that level.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: I I mean for me, I wasn't surprised at all that he entered the transfer portal.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: I figured with how he had a very, very up and down season this year, you know, some games he looked great, but other games he didn't, on and off injuries, all that sort of stuff.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: He may want to look for a fresh start.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: I was not I wasn't close-minded to that idea, but yeah, the the timing of it definitely threw me off a little bit before they even landed back in Lubbock.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, so you know, that part of it is what makes me think he's probably gone.
- 15:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I get like I was with you though.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, I was it initially was shocked because I just I didn't see it coming.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: Because I mean, one of the one of the things like I keep coming back to is that Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: is one of the reasons why early he was I feel like he was absolutely a piece as to why Kirby Hoka really looked at Mark Adams into hiring him because we keep coming back to that quote of TJ said he's he'd only come back and play for one coach, you know, and it's just kind of surprising to see that he's perhaps changed his mind on that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: I don't know, perhaps the whole his whole NBA draft things gave him a bad burn and he feels like he really needs to prove something this next season for that uh ever be a reality.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: But I I'm just surprised.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: I'm I thought this was a guy that uh was kind of ride or die with Mark Adams.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying that like his he's not a great red raider or anything like that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: I'm just surprised by that.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a weird balance you got to keep as a you know prospect, potentially who wants to make the NBA, you know.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: Whether you wait, keep waiting, uh, you know, it's never good for the NBA draft if you're in your you know low 20s and trying to get into the draft, but uh that's just the name of the game these days.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: But um it wasn't we did see an interesting tweet.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: Uh Terrence Shannon Jr., Texas Tech basketball has been kind of put putting out you know appreciation posts for all these guys.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: And uh on the Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: one, uh Chris Level quote tweeted, uh, you know, have we actually seen Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: in you know his last game in a Red Raider uniform?
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: He said, Do not rule it out.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: So for me, you know, when TJ first entered the portal and you start seeing different uh blog posts and everything like that, rumors coming around, Kentucky's interested in Terrence Shane Jr., Illinois, you know, maybe he wants to go back a little closer to home.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, but for you know, a guy as in tune as Chris Level, for him to kind of say, do not rule it out, you know, kind of makes me a little feel a little better about him potentially returning.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: But I think ultimately with TJ, and we've known this since he's been on campus, TJ is an emotional guy.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: TJ is a very, very passionate and emotional kid, you know.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: So one day it could be this, one day it could be that.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: We all thought he was staying in the NBA draft last year, and then he decided to come back.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: So we don't really know, and I don't think anybody could tell you, except for Tarren Shannon Jr., what he's going to do.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: So, right now, yeah, I'm probably more cynical to the fact that he's going to be back here, but it he could very well come back.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's just that's how TJ rolls, right?
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: And I think most of us would want him back.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: But I know a lot of fans have kind of shared the sentiment of the team has been a little maybe a little more cohesive on the court with them off.
- 18:34SPEAKER_05: Remember those games where TJ wasn't on the on the court and we were just pounding team, well, you know, doing our thing.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: What what's your what's your like hope for next season?
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: Do you want to see TJ on the roster or would you rather see uh another guy kind of move in and fill that role?
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: I'd I'd love to have TJ back.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I would yeah, I I you know the injuries that he was dealing with on and off.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: You hope that those are better, you hope that he can get healthy.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Uh and he, but you don't deny a talent like Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: to come back, you just don't.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: So I I would love to have him back.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Um, there's you know, been skeptical.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: There's been people talking about is the system right for him at Texas Tech?
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Is it would he be better off in another system?
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Maybe.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, would he be better in a more offensive-oriented system?
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, I could also see him just absolutely loving Mark Adams and loving playing for Mark Adams and wanting to come back and potentially, you know, go from there and maybe have an increased role with with Adonis Arms not here, with Davion Warren not here, although with potentially Kevin McCullough, who we're gonna talk about in a second, not there.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I I would absolutely welcome TJ back with open arms.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: Agreed.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, I just just a quick recap on yours.
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: It's like like you said, you don't deny that talent, you don't you don't deny that veterancy.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: You don't know a guy, you don't deny a guy that knows the system like the back of his hand at this point with how many years he's been in it.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: So, I mean he's a potential NBA guy.
- 19:57SPEAKER_05: Why wouldn't you want him in there?
- 19:58SPEAKER_05: So and we'll meet he's a red writer, so that's that's my final thought on that.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: And I do hope he comes back, TJ.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: Please.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: But we'll see, we'll keep y'all updated.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, obviously, this is a process, so we may not get news for weeks, months, who knows?
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: But uh, and he may want to try professional opportunities.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Who even knows?
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: You know, there's there's always options for these guys.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, the other big news uh coming out of the roster was Kevin McCullough declaring for the NBA draft while retaining his two years of eligibility.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: Um, a lot of people were concerned with the wording of the graphic that K Mac put out there, kind of saying uh, you know, he's keeping his options open, even if he does come back.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: He didn't specifically say he would either go NBA or return to Texas Tech.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: He could potentially enter the transfer portal.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: He hasn't done that yet.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: But the main thing here is Kevin McCullough is going to get feedback from NBA scouts for the first time.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: And it for a guy that wants to play in the NBA and a guy that has the intangibles and has the talent to potentially play in the NBA, I think this is a fantastic decision for him.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: He needs to do this.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: Um, he he's just if he wants to take that next step, he needs to figure out what he needs to do to get there.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: And I think that's what he's doing here.
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: I'm absolutely with you.
- 21:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, I feel like there's anybody on this team that deserves this chance, it's it's K-Mack, you know, especially for a guy that you know everyone was kind of unsure would have that uh upside to do so.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: And I think he's proven that he he has the the the ability to do so if given the chance.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm with you, man.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: I hope he hears some good feedback and and learns what he needs to do or heck, even if a a team is like, we will take you.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: So I mean, like you said, man, let go now's the time.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: You don't want to wait on this kind of stuff at in in this today's age.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: So uh I'm with you, man.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: And but if there's anybody I really want to come back, it's K Mac.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: You know, he just kind of feels he just feels like he's the leader of the team, you know.
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: And especially if he has two more years, that's that's a a lifetime in in college basketball, you know.
- 21:57SPEAKER_05: So I would love that back, but obviously, dude, I won't Best where came at because he's one of those guys that stayed and he he stayed in with force, too.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I think that's most people's mindsets here.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, I will say from he's done an interview since then, it was just like a 30-second snippet I saw on Twitter.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: The wording that he used, he's kind of like, you know, I'm just going to see what the what the scouts think of me, what I can improve on my game.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: And then if I have to return, I'll return.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: It like it doesn't seem like it's I would probably say right now I'm about 75% on Kevin McCullough returning to college basketball.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: I also think the wording is very is a little concerning uh for Texas Tech fans, but I also think that's calculated and there's a reason for that.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: He doesn't want to put himself in a corner and say it's either NBA or back to Texas Tech.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: He wants to keep his options open.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: That's every player in college basketball these days.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And I know Kevin McCullough loves this program.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Obviously, his dad played football for us.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: He's he came back when he didn't have to, all that good stuff.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, but we've also seen players, you know, transfer out of the Texas Tech program and kind of thrive.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I think he's just keeping his options open, and it's not one thing or another.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: He's not 100% leaving Texas Tech if he decides to come back to college, he's not 100% transferring to another school, he's not 100% going to the NBA.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: So uh again, this is a decision where he's keeping his options open and he's getting good feedback.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: But I do probably expect Kevin McCullough to be back in college basketball and probably playing for Texas Tech next year.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the guy's using professional language, you know.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: Like he's just he's like you said, he's trying to keep his opportunities open to for any phone call that can pop up that interests his that's best for his future, you know.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: So I'm absolutely with you there.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: And I I'm with you.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: I think he comes back for another year.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I would love to see him on the double T again.
- 23:50SPEAKER_05: So uh we're all bored on that.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: So absolutely, man.
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: But what a great season from him as well, as well.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: You know, overall, pretty solid season for both these guys.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: Obviously, injury riddled for both of them, missed good chunks of the year.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: TJ was playing hurt kind of all year, K Mac kind of the same way.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: So, uh, you know, wish those guys the best in whatever their plans are, but we will keep you updated, and we would also love to have both of them back playing for Texas Tech next.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: We know you're listening, boys.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: So come on, come on over.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: But I got the Lone Star is cold.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we had um we had one more uh roster decision here coming, and that is uh Chabuzo Agbo has also entered the transfer portal.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: Um this was 100% expected on my end, you know.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: Uh the Buzo hive is hurting right now.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: I feel for you guys, right?
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: This man, this man could not find minutes in both both seasons he's been here.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: Um I like Buzo, I like the potential of some of his stuff.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: I think he could turn into a really good player.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: I think his body is transformed really nicely uh to potentially, you know, be a really good basketball player.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: But when you're not seeing consistent minutes and not even the potential of consistent minutes uh in really any game this year, besides kind of the opening games, uh, this was 100% expected.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: And I I expect him to not be in a red Raider uniform next year.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this is the most straightforward transfer.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: You know, you could talk about classic loss in the sauce, you know.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: So if you're not on the floor, might as well see if somebody would will want to put you there.
- 25:26SPEAKER_05: So I don't blame him, man.
- 25:28SPEAKER_05: It's it's gonna happen, especially in in the modern college basketball uh atmosphere.
- 25:33SPEAKER_05: So, dude, go go go find where you can fit, dude.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: But obviously, if you if you can develop an other Mark Adams more, that'd be great as well.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: But I don't I'm not surprised either.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean it he could come back, like all these guys could come back.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: You're not once you're in the transfer portal, it's not like you can come back or anything, but uh, or it's not like you can't come back or anything, but um, yeah, you know, wish wish Buzo the best.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Uh send send your prayers to uh to our guy Ryan Mainville uh over there because uh he's hurting right now.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: The Buzo hive is hurting, but I I probably I'd I'd probably expect him to go somewhere closer to home, probably somewhere on the west coast, but we'll just have to see on that one.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then the last departure uh for Texas, or I guess this one's an actual departure, the others are potential, but uh coach, assistant coach Talvin Hester taking the Louisiana Tech head coaching job.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: Louisiana Tech is taking all of our coaches, Rustin is becoming Louisiana Lubbock.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, congrats to Coach Hester.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: This is awesome for him.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude, absolutely.
- 26:37SPEAKER_05: I was wondering when coaches would start getting hired away from us.
- 26:41SPEAKER_05: I was like, our staff is so phenomenal.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: I was scratching my head as to why other programs were looking to get them as their head guys to instill that uh Mark Adams style uh basketball in wherever they are.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: And they picked a great guy to do it, man.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: Go, go get go chase that chance.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: Louisiana Tech's probably a great program to get started at, you know, great place with a lot of talent around you, you know, a noticeable brand.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: It's not like you're starting from the rock bottom or anything like that.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: You're you're you you're right there with Sonny, you're right there with our other guy, you know.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: So what a great pipeline they've built.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and Hester has some experience with Louisiana Tech.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: He was an assistant there for I think three years uh before he took the Texas Tech job.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: So uh obviously the guy's familiar with the area, and you know, he's a big DFW recruiter and everything like that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, congrats to him.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Anytime you get a head coaching opportunity as an assistant, you're probably taking it.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, this is what it says about the program.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: Good programs have assistance leave all the time.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: And it happened under Beard, it's now happening under Adams.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: You're gonna have assistance leave.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: That's what's gonna happen.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: None of these guys are like, no, I'm I'm content with being an assistant coach and just a recruiter, just you know, uh player personnel guy.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: Like, no, everybody's looking for that next opportunity and that next step up.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, this is awesome for him.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: I'm uh seriously, Louisiana Tech's taking everybody from us.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, everybody's got dreams.
- 28:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, all these guys are so competitive and so ambitious.
- 28:04SPEAKER_05: You know, they made it this far in the best in their basketball careers, they're not gonna stop.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm excited, man.
- 28:09SPEAKER_05: Go Bulldogs on the field and hardwood, dude, dude.
- 28:12SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I'm all about the Bulldogs right now.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: No doubt, no doubt.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: We're big Louisiana Tech guys, yeah.
- 28:18SPEAKER_05: You should start uh stocking up on some rusting gear there in Baton Rouge, bro.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, really, honestly.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: I might do that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: But actually, getting getting some getting like a tea or something would be kind of dope.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Hey man, we're we're all a tech family over here, so that's that's it's just all part of the big tech fam.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: So um, as of right now, I just wanted to give everybody kind of a look at the roster uh as of today, this moment.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Kevin O'Banner has not made a decision on whether he's coming back or not.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: He still does have a year of eligibility remaining, should he choose to use it.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: So look out for that decision.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Nothing's been made yet, but as of right now, we can kind of put Kevin O'Banner on the returning list until we see otherwise.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Um Malik Wilson hasn't announced anything yet, so it looks like Malik Wilson's here.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Clarence Nedolmy, I expect to be a red writer next year again.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, Daniel Boccio as well.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: He got some pretty good minutes for you know his um for being a freshman, and he's gonna go into his sophomore year.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: Um, KJ Allen hasn't said anything yet.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: So I I, you know, him uh it could be either way.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: I I don't know honestly at all what KJ Allen or his head's at right now.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: But um Ethan Duncan is still here.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was our lone high school recruit last year, uh, local kid, Lubbock.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Uh he was out all last season with an injury, but uh I imagine he will be on Texas Tech's roster um next year.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: And then the four newcomers, Jalen Tyson, who, of course, everybody knows the story, went to UT after Beard left, decided to come back, decided to come back to the better program.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: He's seen both of them and he realized Texas Tech is better.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: So he's coming back.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: Expect a lot from Jalen Tyson.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna tell you right now, I think Jalen Tyson is gonna get some real minutes next year.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, and obviously, depending on who we get in the transfer portals, some guys could be the same position, everything like that.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: But this kid is really, really good.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: And a lot of guys that are making their top transfer lists and all that kind of stuff have him very highly up there.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Some in the top five, some guys are so, and he's been, you know, with the program for half a season.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: So he's seen how we roll and he's been with Mark Adams and the coaching staff.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: So I'm expecting a lot from Jalen Tyson next year.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: Whenever you talk about the guys that are potentially leaving us, you gotta have those guys that can really step up talent-wise, you know, because we are we could potentially have a talent crater hitting us here in a second.
- 30:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, you still have to fill in with the transfers, like you said, but uh, you know, losing the gate, losing guys like TJ and Kamak would be or even Kevin O'Banner would be you know pretty devastating where we look at this season.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: You know, if you're just transferring the season to next, so we got to have a guy that fills in.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: And you're already losing Bryson Williams, who is your lead scorer, probably your best player this year.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: You know, San O Soba, reliable, big off the bench.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, Adonis, who ended up being a really key piece to this year's team.
- 31:09SPEAKER_05: I'm losing so much.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: And Davion, too.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's uh we're losing a lot, and that's kind of what you get when you get these seniors transferring in.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: But that's just college basketball, man.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: And it's and I fully expect Mark Adams and them to be 100% in on the transfer portal again.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: And we're not gonna get as many as we got last offseason, but expect them to get some pretty good pieces that are gonna be potential starters.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, uh, I think I think the transfer portal is is insane, it's nuts every year now it is, but um expect Mark Adams and and the coaching staff to be right there with everybody else.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: For sure, man.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: I'm really I'm so excited to get unbelievably hyped about a transfer again, like we were this past summer.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: So I'm ready for that roller coaster again.
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: And and expect it to be a long-term process.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, Kevin O'Banner went through the NBA draft process and then we got him after that.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it may take a month or two, it may take a while till we get this roster finalized and completed.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, just keep the faith in the coaching staff.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: And we did good on our transfers last year.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: We can do good on them this year.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: So um also wanted to mention the three incoming freshmen that are coming in, true freshmen.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: You know, Jalen Tyson will be a red shirt.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but these guys that we have coming in in our 2022 recruiting class, uh, in Pop Isaacs, Robert Jennings, and Lamar Washington, uh, three really, really nice pieces, really uh cool opportunities to see how these kids can develop.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: I actually think Pop Isaacs is going to be getting some minutes his freshman year.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: And obviously, this again depends on who we get in the transfer portal.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Maybe there's a guy that uh, you know, is is at his same position or something like that.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: But you know, Pop Isaacs fills a role that we did not have on this past year's team, and that's playmaking and shooting.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: And he provides both of them.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: He's an ace three-point shooter, uh, he really moves the ball well, good passer.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: So I, you know, of these three players, I don't know about Robert Jennings, I don't know about Lamar Washington, I don't know much about those guys, but I would expect Pop Isaacs to probably get some minutes next season.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: Time for a uh true point guard again, huh?
- 33:15SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, don't we feel like we're gonna go in the transfer and try to find that kind of thing?
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: Don't you think we're gonna try to find someone that could facilitate that?
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we can very well try to find a point guard.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: We can very well try to find every position.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: I think we're not gonna be stingy on who we look at, you know.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: If there's a really nice point guard in the portal, I think we're gonna go after it.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: And I think a huge positive is we have a pretty good season to sell, you know.
- 33:41SPEAKER_05: Thankfully, you know, it helps.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: You know, we we have a pretty good uh uh scoreboard to show to him whenever we're going to uh going to to the to the zoom meetings.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: It's true, it's true.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: So uh those are the guys on the roster as of right now.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Uh keep waiting on Kevin O'Banner's decision, see what he wants to do, and then obviously McCullough, Shannon, those type of players if they're gonna come back, but uh that'll be later on.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: Um, I wanted to move on to some names that we could potentially look out for in the transfer portal.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Um, we reached out to our friend Austin Massey with 247 Sports.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Uh guy's super plugged in, he knows what he's talking about.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: And uh I just kind of asked him, I was like, hey, who are some players to watch uh potentially for Texas Tech, uh, maybe to see them in the red and black next season.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: And he gave me a list.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: Uh and so I'm gonna read those off right here.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: So just names to keep out for.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: Um some really interesting ones.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, guys that have really nice stats at lower level programs.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: We saw that uh sometimes it translates really well, sometimes it doesn't.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: But we saw with like a guy like Adonis Arms, who averaged like 17 minutes a game at Winthrop, and he ends up being fantastic for Texas Tech this year.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: So it's just kind of how you develop them.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, sometimes don't look too much into the name or the program that they're coming from.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's about the kid and about the talent that they can bring.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: So um, I'm gonna name off a few right here.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: The first one you have to name off is Utah Valley Center Fartis Amac.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Uh okay.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: I I respect him already, but like how do you that is the middle schoolers are gonna have a hey with that?
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, they will.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: But uh his stats are nuts.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Man averaged 19 points a game and almost 14 rebounds a game last season.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: So uh Utah Valley, you know, probably not the steepest of competition over there, but it's about as intangibles, and uh, we've already set up a Zoom meeting with him, and uh, you know, he's he's interested in Texas Tech.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I think he put us kind of in his five schools that he's focusing in on.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: So uh look out for him.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be a big name to watch.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: We've also reached out to Sean McNeil from West Virginia.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: Everybody might remember him, he's the uh really nice shooter.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Uh the white kid, 22, I believe was his number, but um, I mean Deadeye from three, and having a shooter on this team would do wonders for us.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Got an issue with Bobby?
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: What's that now?
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: He's got a he's got a he's got an issue with Huggy Bear.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: I'm a lot of people have an issue with Huggy Bear.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: West Virginia, I think their whole team is in the transfer portal right now.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: They were pretty bad last year.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: So that usually happens with teams that underperformed or had bad years.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: So uh, but yeah, keep an eye out for him.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: I'm uh Texas Tech has reached out to him.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Um, they've also reached out to another West Virginia transfer in Isaiah Cottrell.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: He was a guy that fell in the rotation, he only played 16 minutes a game, but he's a former four-star recruit.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: He's got three years of eligibility, you know, one of those guys that you're kind of rolling the dice on, but could potentially be really, really good if his talent comes together.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 36:43SPEAKER_05: And geez, my god, pillaging interconference teams, huh?
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess so.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: Um, but we'll see.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's happened.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Big 12, uh Snap and Stevie, yeah, Tyreek Smith.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: It's about time.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: Avery Benson.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe, maybe not Avery Benson.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: But uh, Texas Tech has also reached out to ball state center Peyton Sparks.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: He was the Mac freshman of the year, averaged almost a double double.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: He was like 13 and a half points a game, eight and a half rebounds.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: So another big man.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have to replace a lot of big men this year.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: We are losing a ton of them in Bryson, uh, Marcus Sanosilva, potentially O'Banner.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: So we need to get some of these big men from the portal.
- 37:25SPEAKER_05: Having a guy that's faced the Mac shit lights is an enormous asset.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: So I hope we throw everything we've got at him.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, any one of these guys, I would be happy about getting just because he's a he's a big guy and we need big guys.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, Boccio's great, but you know, bocho can't be your only big guy going into next year.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: So says you.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: Says me.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: I could be wrong there, but uh keep an eye out for NC State Guard Cam Hayes.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: He was another one of those guys that kind of fell on the rotation a little bit.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, keep an eye on Princeton guard Jalen Llewellyn.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Oh uh, he had a nice stat line averaging about 15.7 points a game, four rebounds.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: I know Texas Tech has reached out to him as well.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Uh look for Tristan Newman, he averaged 17.7 points a game, 4.8 rebounds, five assists.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: So very balanced effort from that guy.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: He's a guard, uh, nice ball handler, and he's originally from El Paso.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: So, you know, loving in on the West Texas could be a connection there.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: But uh, yeah, these are just some names to watch out.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Andre Corbello, I don't know if he's actually gonna come to tech.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, or Adam Miller as well.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: He's transferring out of LSU.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: So these are just some some big name guards that were at high profile programs that are looking for a new home, just potentially.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: I don't know if techs reach out to him or not, but might as well shoot him at Dex, you know.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, you know, we'll see where his head's at.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: It's Mark Adams.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but yeah, those are just some names to watch out for.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: Um, appreciate Austin Massey for giving and giving us some of that info there.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's our guy.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: Um, I did want to mention last thing with basketball around the Big 12.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: There's been a lot of shakeup.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Obviously, transfer portals massive, so a lot of shakeup right now, kind of breaking down the other teams in the conference and some big decisions on that front.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, for Baylor, Kendall Brown officially declared for the draft.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: I was expected he was the five-star freshman.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, gonna be nice not playing against him next year.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: I also expect Jeremy Sohan to be in that camp as well.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be like a top 15 pick in the draft next year.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: So um, both of those guys were expected to go.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, Baylor's still bringing in more talent ever since the national championship.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: The recruiting's been insane.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: So expect Baylor to be good again.
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: I was about to say, please keep, I was hoping you'd keep listing names from Baylor.
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: I'm like, please just fall apart, dang it.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, seriously.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, we can see more guys like Matthew Meyer or a Kinjo potentially testing the draft waters, all that kind of stuff.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: But as of right now, Kendall Brown's the only one who's officially declared for the draft.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: Do you think they're just they just don't want to even want to stand the thought of losing the Texas Tech over and over again?
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: They can't.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: They I mean that I wouldn't want to play Texas Tech again after those.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: Absolutely not.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: But also, uh fellow um Sweet 16 uh friends, Iowa State Cyclones out here had some had a big loss.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Isaiah Brockington is going to pursue professional opportunities, whether that be NBA or overseas, but he is not going to be back at Iowa State.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: He was their whole offense, so that is a really good sign for us uh to potentially see an Iowa State team that's not maybe not be as good.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: But Otzelberger's been a great coach over there, so expect them to probably be pretty good.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Um, George Condon also foregoing his remaining eligibility for Iowa State.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: He's gonna explore pro opportunities.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: He was a starter for him, so that's big.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Um, Christian Bishop returning to Texas.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: This was a uh probably a pretty big decision for uh old Chris Beard down there in Austin.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: Um, he gets one of his big guys back.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Bishop kind of emerged as the starting big for them.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, he's he's he's kind of a pain in the butt to deal with.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: He's athletic, he can uh he can bang down low, and he's you know one of those tough guys.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: So uh that's not great returning to Texas, but uh, you know, we'll see.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Um you're scared of a UT, you're scared of this UT team coming up that doesn't have Avery Benson.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: Okay, dude.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: You're bad at you're bad at threat assessment.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: That's that's very true.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: Avery Benson will not be returning to the University of Texas.
- 41:31SPEAKER_05: I don't know if they'll win a single game now.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: I don't know either.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know how they will with his 1.5 minute a game average.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be tough scene, but um K-State has been active this offseason so far.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: They uh moved on from Bruce Weber and hired Jerome Tang as their head coach.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was Scott Drew's like main guy, main assistant at Baylor for all these years.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: This is a fantastic hire, in my opinion.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: I think he's gonna get that K-State program up and running.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's a really beloved guy in the college basketball sphere.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: So this is a good hire for K-State.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, they also took Ulrich Maliggy from Texas, um, who was notably at Texas Tech when Beard was here.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: Ace recruiter.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: That's the main thing about Maliggy is he is a fantastic recruiter, and this is a this is gonna be a big loss for UT.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: And I know UT doesn't usually have problems with recruiting, but losing, you know, an ace recruiter is never good for your program.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: So I'm assuming he'll offered a promotion at K-State then.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think he's probably the lead assistant there at K-State now.
- 42:33SPEAKER_05: That's what I would assume.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: So no good move, dude.
- 42:37SPEAKER_05: Good move for the cats.
- 42:38SPEAKER_05: It's it's good, it's good that all the Big 12 teams are still super serious about basketball and except only one to win.
- 42:43SPEAKER_05: So that's just that's great.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: It's a great conference.
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: It's eat or be eaten, dude.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: This is the best conference in college basketball.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: You got to get better, and uh, I think K-State's on the right track.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: Um, but Nigel Pack, who was their main guard last year, uh, great player.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: He is testing the draft waters.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, looks like he's mainly doing it to get feedback as well.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: Kind of the Kevin McCullough, what I think is going to happen with Kevin McCullough, and he'll probably return uh to college basketball, whether that's with K-State or not.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: Um, Oklahoma, Tanner Groves, the big goofball's coming back.
- 43:12SPEAKER_03: He's using his code year.
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then Elijah Harkless is also returning, which is huge for the Sooners.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: I thought Harkless really came into his own last year.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then Groves, you know, Groves is a solid player.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, maybe not as good as he was with Eastern Washington last year, but you know, that he had he was good in spots.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, anytime you can get a returner um for Porter Moser, I think it's good for them.
- 43:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, we I I I just expect that program to go up as well with that with their coach as well.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Yep, no doubt.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Um, Emoja Gibson, thank goodness, is exploring professional opportunities.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: My man, go go for it, yeah, please.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: P three.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: I never want to play that guy again.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: Um and kind.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Just ended it off.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: We already talked about the West Virginia guys, but uh TCU Mike Miles declaring for the draft doesn't look like he's gonna be returning.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was a really, really good player for TCU last year, and a big part of their kind of turnaround uh for them having a really good season.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: So yeah, uh gonna be nice to not play him again.
- 44:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they had a shockingly good season, man.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: Uh it's just it was kind of crazy to see Micah beat us.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it kind of hurt a little bit.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: It did, it did a little bit, but um, you know, and then they almost beat Arizona, number one season.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, they had a really good end of the year, they did.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: So uh TCU's here to stay again.
- 44:34SPEAKER_03: It's just another freaking good Big 12 team.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous at this point.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, it's not going anywhere.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: Yep, but that's all I had for Big 12.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, did you have anything else kind of to round out basketball?
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: My sir, I think you've done a great job tying a bow on it.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: All righty, fantastic.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Then we can move on to the final bit here.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Spring football officially started.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: Joey McGuire here with his guys, they've been putting out excellent social media content for all of us to get hyped up for football season.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's cool.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: It's really cool what they're doing because obviously Joey had an emphasis on social media, and he likes to really get the fans engaged and involved and seeing looks at practice, drills.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, uh the the local Lubbock media has been really cool on giving us some nice plays during spring ball, all that kind of stuff.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it's just it's just nice having that because you know it's it's nice not being in the dark kind of about football.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was about to say it feels like this has had like an open door policy.
- 45:35SPEAKER_05: I feel like they do a really good job of making us feel like we're there with them, and I feel like that's a great way to get fans to buy in.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, his energy and his career is not obviously make you like really like the dude, but the way he's running his program, it really seems like it's very fan-oriented, and I love that.
- 45:49SPEAKER_05: You know, that was a huge issue with the Kingsbury era.
- 45:51SPEAKER_05: You know, Matt Wells tried, it just kind of felt like it was a lot of um, unfortunately, imposter syndrome, you know.
- 45:56SPEAKER_05: But it's but my Joey Maguire seems completely genuine about all of it.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, and I wasn't like a knock on Matt's character, but I just mean like he just obviously didn't really belong with Joey Maguire.
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: He really seems like he's 100 but 100 bottom and wants us to just buy in with him.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: And I love it.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and the same thing.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: I've been listening to the press conferences after the practices and mic'd up stuff.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: All these guys think so highly of Zach Kitley, and really all of college football thinks so highly of Zach Kitley.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: This guy, I mean, they keep calling him the guru, the magician, I mean, the offensive mastermind.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, that just gets you hyped up because if we get back to some crazy offense here at Texas Tech, it's exciting.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: It really is, man.
- 46:39SPEAKER_05: And I was watching one of those videos right before we got on air.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: I was like, I was watching the mic'd up with Zach Hitley, and um, dude, it's just I love what he says at practice.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: He's just, you know, whenever I was here, we left the country every single year in passing.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, I just come on, let's start slinging.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: I'm like, yes, let's get that back, baby.
- 46:58SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: So I'm so excited to see what he does with our QBs and wide receivers, and obviously uh uh work the whole offense in.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: But dude, I I I again, man, I feel like the Sunny Gumby leaving.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm happy for him uh pursuing another opportunity and really chasing his dream of being head coach, but I feel like it was perfect timing, absolute perfect timing for sure.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I couldn't be more excited about this staff going into next season.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: Um, should mention that we added another defensive lineman from uh UL Monroe.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, that would be Miles Cole.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: He's a guy who's kind of been there, didn't his stats don't jump out at you, but uh to have more D-line depth in case we have some injuries and stuff like that.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: An experienced player, I think it you know adds to it.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: And I think that's what Joey's really put an emphasis on is the trenches, is the D line, the O line, getting that healthy, getting a lot of good players on it, and just being consistent at that position because we've seen in the past that we haven't really been.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: So uh again, nice to see him put an emphasis on the lines for sure.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: And I feel like uh we're watching him show us that he can identify talent because I'm looking back and looking at these recruits that have already committed to tech and they're getting more and more offers.
- 48:04SPEAKER_05: And you see offers from LSCA, you see offers from Baylor, you see offers from Florida and stuff, and it's just like Joey McGuire got ahead of all of this, and it's just it's crazy to see that perhaps this guy really does have the eye that we're looking for at TechStech to get ahead of all these other big programs.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: You know, we know they're good enough to be there, we just got to beat them in the race.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: So I like to see what we're I like, I like what the way he's he's running the program so far with that.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: So I trust him with this transfer.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: Yep, absolutely.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Um final thing pro day going on in Lubbock right now.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, shouts out to our guys, the seniors that were on the team last year, Rico Jeffers, Schooler, uh, Demarcus Fields, Eric Monroe, those type of players that maybe aren't getting the most publicity right now going into the draft, but hopefully they can make a noise at pro day.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, so uh always good luck to those guys.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Hopefully they find a spot on an NFL roster next year.
- 48:52SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: Because I I know, I know whenever I'm watching professional sports, I'd I always like to see whenever there's red raiders, and I'll just okay, I'm cheering for that team now.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: Like those that's I hope they win now.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: Uh always rooting for Red Raiders in the NFL.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: Shouts out Shaqem Grant for getting a nice little deal with the Browns there.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Uh heck yeah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, I mean, heck yeah, but oh yeah, yeah.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: Browns, Browns a tough scene right now to root for that team, but you can root for Jakeem Grant.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: At least Baker won't be throwing in.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, at least Baker won't be throwing it, right?
- 49:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's true.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: No Baker.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: That uh well, as of right, I don't know.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: I don't know what's going on with them.
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: So the Browns are a mess, as usual.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: Um, but all right, dude.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: I think I've talked everybody's ear off right here.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: Let's go to song of the week and then we'll end it off.
- 49:41SPEAKER_05: All righty, man.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: Okay, so for my song of the week, dude, I'm I'm gonna repeat, I'm going to go back to a guy that I've already done, but he's one of my absolute favorites, dude.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: I really cannot get enough of him.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's a proud red raider.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: It is again Wade Bowen, and I this is off of his new EP.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be Phones Don't Work by Wade Bowen.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: I just have myself sing it along to it and gets getting stuck in my head, you know, obviously well written, and it kind of reminds me of West Texas and stuff, you know, just how empty it is out there and how you get away from everything, you know.
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: So that's just how the song feels.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: That's how West Texas feels.
- 50:17SPEAKER_05: So I'm going red raid or great, Wade Bowen, phones don't work.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: She can't call me, and I can't call her.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Love a good Wade Bowen song, you know.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: Gotta love the the Texas Tech connection there.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: So I know that's he is my guy, man.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: That's a good pick.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: Um, my song of the week is going to be uh something I've been kind of vibing with lately.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: I was I was listening to a lot of Leon Bridges lately.
- 50:50SPEAKER_03: Uh really good.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Also, if you lose the I I mean, if you're ever browsing YouTube for new music, go listen to his live version of River on uh on uh I think it was at ACL.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: It's fantastic.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: It's it's one of the like the highest like watched YouTube videos, it's always popping up on my like uh recommended or whatever.
- 51:08SPEAKER_03: But uh go listen to that.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: But my song of the week is Leon Bridges and a person called Corunbin, both of them.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: I think I've I think I'm pronouncing that right, but uh the song that I have chosen by them is Texas Sun.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: Great song, great jam.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: Uh just smooth.
- 51:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, Leon Bridges has one of the best voices in music, in my opinion.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, that's my song of the week, Texas Sun.
- 51:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think that's one of his bigger ones right now.
- 51:46SPEAKER_05: Good pick, dude.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, we had a little double Texas feature there, a little double Texas artist feature.
- 51:51SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 51:51SPEAKER_03: Gotta be gotta get back on the grind.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm not I'm not trying to do so many that like relate to like March Madness anymore, you know.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: I'm on that I was on that trade for a while, so trying to get something something for the people.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, here's so here's some really good music we like, not just trying to fit a theme most of the time, you know.
