- 0:05The night fell on the lonely road as a few drops of rain hit the
- 0:10windshield. My partner, Irem and I had gone into a road trip,
- 0:15which we hoped would heal our relationship. If I had to mention the principle
- 0:21of all our problems, it would certainly be when child services had taken custody
- 0:27of Irem' s nephew and given it to him by his mother, who
- 0:31had suddenly appeared, after two years of having entrusted us with a few hours
- 0:36to his son. If you ask me, I wouldn' t trust that
- 0:39woman or a dog. Anyway, I think I' m drifting away from
- 0:44it. Every time I talk about it. I feel that my blood has
- 0:48boiled since that day our marriage had suffered a series of problems and tensions.
- 0:53The fights escalated to such an extent that the atmosphere at home had become unsustainable.
- 0:58That' s when I decided to contact a couples psychologist, because I
- 1:03really loved Irem and didn' t want to lose so many years of marriage
- 1:07without fighting. We had a couple of sessions where they got the fights down.
- 1:12We were still in trouble. That' s when our couples psychologist advised
- 1:18us to stay away from the routine to reconnect that idea I found very good.
- 1:23After all, when we were still boyfriends, we had been infatuated with
- 1:27making a trip in a van, without plans, without direction, fixed only
- 1:33to follow the road, though with the passage of time and with maturity.
- 1:36Coming to us. We knew it was more complicated than that, so that
- 1:40idea was simply buried over the years. However, if we wanted to make
- 1:48that trip, there was no better time for it. We could both ask
- 1:52for vacations in our respective jobs and had enough savings to allow that trip,
- 1:57so I got an old van with an acquaintance already with renewed hopes, we
- 2:05decided to take a road trip in search of new experiences and a respite for
- 2:09our relationship, after several days of preparation and packaging we finally found ourselves on
- 2:15the road driving along unknown roads under persistent rain the atmosphere inside the van was
- 2:23tense, but we were both determined to leave our differences behind and find the
- 2:30peace that we both longed for we decided to take a route that would take
- 2:35us through a picturesque rural landscape. As we moved forward, the lights of
- 2:39small villages and farms were draining in the distance, plunged into a disquieting darkness.
- 2:47However, the atmosphere was unable to overshadow our emotion because of the unknown
- 2:53that awaited us along the way. The trip was certainly a fresh touch to
- 2:58our relationship and, with the exception of some disagreements, everything pointed to the
- 3:01fact that the journey was really working. After several days of driving, our
- 3:07caravan began to show signs of failure even though it had been fixing any imperfect
- 3:13and inconvenient that van might have this time no matter what it tried, it
- 3:19couldn' t fix it to turn on anxiety took over us. While we
- 3:25were looking on the map for the nearest place we could repair the vehicle.
- 3:30As the mantle of the night sheltered us minute by minute, they looked at
- 3:36a sign a few meters away, which welcomed a village. To our perplexity,
- 3:42we discovered that that town was not on any of our guides or maps.
- 3:46However, we were running out of options, so we walked to that
- 3:52mysterious place in search of help before we got any more night. When a
- 3:59stranger arrived, the feeling invaded us. The streets were deserted. The village
- 4:03was quite picturesque and rural. We walked a little before we began to see
- 4:09the first inhabitants of the village, who, to our surprise, were extremely
- 4:15kind, even in excess. Every smile seemed forced and every kind word sounded
- 4:21hollow. We felt uncomfortable with as much kindness as if we were in the
- 4:28middle of a badly executed theatrical performance. We continue walking through the streets of
- 4:33the village. Every step we took seemed to sink further into an oppressive and
- 4:39disturbing atmosphere. The houses seemed to be frozen in time after walking for a
- 4:45while. Finally we found a small shop on the corner of a street we
- 4:51decided to go in looking for someone who could help us with our broken van.
- 4:57The interior of the tent was similar as mons the rest of the village.
- 5:00The floor creaked under our feet as we moved through the corridors full of
- 5:05shelves. Everything seemed to be just a common grocery store, but there was
- 5:11still something, which didn' t feel right. Finally, the shop owner
- 5:15came out to take care of us. This was an older man, with
- 5:19sunken eyes and a forced smile on his face. We explained our situation to
- 5:26him and he nodded kindly by offering us help. However, something in his
- 5:30gaze made us feel even more uncomfortable. He seemed to know something that we
- 5:36didn' t. Despite our distrust. We accepted the help of the locals
- 5:43to repair the caravan, which towed it to the village mechanic. I remember
- 5:48feeling like a fool for having spent hours with the van problem for a problem
- 5:54that those people had managed to solve in just half an hour. Even though
- 5:59I think about it better, it seemed as if they were working against the
- 6:04clock almost as if they wanted us to get back on track as quickly as
- 6:08possible. I remember the problem was barely solved. The inhabitants gave us precise
- 6:15indications to leave the village. We both thought they were strangely specific indications,
- 6:21but we also thought that it could only be about our discomfort. We decided
- 6:28not to question too much the actions and words of the inhabitants of the village
- 6:32and we rushed to leave that strange place behind. With the van repaired.
- 6:38We took our journey back, but we could not shake off the disturbing feeling
- 6:43left by those people and their people. Trusting in the directions they had given
- 6:47us, we resumed the journey, we both made comments about the strangeness of
- 6:54what happened and even made jokes that if those people smiled more their jaws that
- 6:59were stuck. We laughed a little before realizing that the landscape soon became an
- 7:04endless maze of cornfields. We continue to drive quietly, trying to leave behind
- 7:12the disturbing people and their strange atmosphere. However, as we moved along the
- 7:17dark road, we began to notice something strange. The corn fields that bordered
- 7:24the road seemed to move unusually. The leaves were shaking violently as if a
- 7:31strong gust of wind was beating them, but there was no wind at all.
- 7:38A chill swept through our body as we watched the cornfield in motion,
- 7:44when suddenly the van went out, leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere,
- 7:49we found ourselves looking at the cornfield with nervousness and confusion. I tried
- 7:54to light the van one more time, but there was no answer. The
- 7:59darkness of the night and the feeling of being trapped began to weigh upon us.
- 8:05We both cursed our luck and decided to go down and see what had
- 8:09happened. To my surprise, everything seemed to be in order. As we
- 8:13looked towards the cornfield, we agreed that we had gone far enough to return.
- 8:18Walking up to the roof of the van to see if he could see
- 8:24a nearby house where he could ask for help. However, the only thing
- 8:28I could notice was a scarecrow standing out among the crops. I remember thinking
- 8:33about taking a picture. I looked down to ask him to go to the
- 8:37Chamber, but when I wanted to take the photograph, I noticed with horror
- 8:43how the scarecrow was no longer in its place. At first I considered that
- 8:48I was looking in another direction, so I started looking for it with my
- 8:52eyes. I remember meticulously examining the Maizal before giving up. My subconscious really
- 8:58wanted to counter it, but that didn' t happen. I got out
- 9:01of the van. Irem noticed the bewilderment in my eyes, so he questioned
- 9:07me what I had seen. But before I could explain, strange noises began
- 9:11to be heard. The noises intensified, seemed to come from all over the
- 9:18cornfield. They were creaking, beatings and murmurs that filled the air and sent
- 9:24chills through our body. Iren He held onto my arm visibly about to go
- 9:31into a breakdown of nerves, while I was trying to find the source of
- 9:35those disturbing sounds. Suddenly, corn plants began to shake even more violently.
- 9:43An invisible force seemed to be moving them as if a dark and threatening presence
- 9:50was lurking among the crops. Our hearts beat hard as the tension in the
- 9:56environment reached its peak. An electric shock ran through my whole being and a
- 10:03voice in my head made me feel that something was not right, so without
- 10:05explaining, I pushed Irem into the caravan, closed all the windows and put
- 10:11all the locks on the doors. While questioned by Irem, I could not
- 10:18explain the origin of my fear. He could only be quick to repeat over
- 10:22and over again he was not in his place. She kept questioning. I
- 10:26couldn' t understand my fear, but I was definitely starting to get nervous.
- 10:31I tried to tell him what I had seen when a few bumps in
- 10:35the caravan convinced us that something was terribly wrong. We couldn' t see
- 10:39what was going on outside. It was only heard that someone wanted to come
- 10:45in, while Irene tried to understand my reaction and the reason for my fear.
- 10:48Disturbing sounds from the cornfield intensified even further. The darkness of the night
- 10:56seemed to close around us and we felt a malevolent presence lurking from the cornfield.
- 11:03We cling to each other trying to find comfort and security in the midst
- 11:07of the anguish that invaded us. Fear took hold of us. I thought
- 11:13that if I was afraid even knowing a little bit of what was happening,
- 11:18I could not imagine the uncertainty that overwhelmed idem so I released a scarecrow was
- 11:22not in its place, she questioned the meaning of my words when out of
- 11:28nowhere the lights of the car went on, letting see in front of it
- 11:33the figure of a man in a plaid hat and shirt, which was hidden
- 11:37back in the dark. He screamed in awe that was it, but I
- 11:43couldn' t give him an answer. Suddenly the lights went out leaving us
- 11:48back in the immense darkness. I' m not sure how long it'
- 11:52s been. Time passes in a completely different way. When you' re
- 11:58in total panic. Silence had reigned long enough for us to consider that whatever
- 12:03that thing had been, it would have already gone, so we made the
- 12:07desperate decision to abandon the vehicle in order to try to find the way back
- 12:13to the people. Following the road for a few minutes we had an argument
- 12:22because I insisted on going to get help so that she would stay safe in
- 12:26the truck offer she rejected over and over again told me that under no circumstances
- 12:31would she let me go alone, fearing that thing would come back before we
- 12:37agreed and it would be the plan to go. Both our hearts were pounding.
- 12:41As we watched the mysterious man hiding in the shadows of the cornfield.
- 12:48We didn' t know who he was or what he intended to be,
- 12:52but his presence only fed our fear and stopped growing and we decided that there
- 12:58was no time to lose. The van still didn' t start, though.
- 13:01We couldn' t stay there indefinitely waiting for something terrible to happen.
- 13:07We had to do something, find help or escape from that place as quickly
- 13:11as possible. Irem took my trembling hand and looked into my eyes for comfort
- 13:18and strength. We both knew that we should act cautiously and follow our instincts
- 13:24to survive. We decided that we would walk quietly through the cornfield keeping our
- 13:31eyes wide open and relying on our intuition to find a way out. Every
- 13:35step we took between the high corn plants seemed to take us deeper into the
- 13:41dark and sinister maze. The sound of the creaks and whispers became increasingly deafening
- 13:46and we could feel lurking glances over us, but we continued to overcome our
- 13:54fear and cling to the hope of finding a way out. The night was
- 14:01passing over us as we advanced in fear. Every step was fraught with anxiety
- 14:07and anticipation. I remember clearly how I held firmly the hand of Irem,
- 14:13who corresponded to me in the same way. We walked very shortly before that
- 14:16horrible sensation took over my body. I felt watched, so I told him
- 14:22to run a good stretch before that figure came out from between the cornfield right
- 14:28in front of us, leaving us no choice but to stray, which,
- 14:33thinking for the best, seemed to be exactly his purpose. The scarecrow.
- 14:39Now he was relentlessly pursuing us We could hear him walk behind us. His
- 14:46macabre and twisted figure stalked us from a distance, emitting an evil presence that
- 14:52frozen our bones. We ran for endless hours wounded by the corn branches and
- 14:58terrified. As the scarecrow mocked us in a sick game of cat and mouse,
- 15:05we felt our breath cut short as we fled from that infernal scarecrow.
- 15:11Every time we looked back, far from feeling distant, his figure seemed to
- 15:18move closer and closer with a creepy agility. Despite his inert appearance, his
- 15:24presence was a constant nightmare in our desperate flight. At one point we decided
- 15:33to hide we were hoping that he would tire of looking for us to leave
- 15:37He kept saying that we should go back to the road, since in this
- 15:43way we could run into someone who could help us. That was a good
- 15:46idea in the first instance, but being objective, I hadn' t seen
- 15:50another driver in a long time, so the odds of bumping into one was
- 15:56very unlikely, but I knew she didn' t want to. I laughed
- 16:00to wait for whatever that thing was and to tell the truth neither did I,
- 16:03so after I didn' t hear it, we decided to get out
- 16:07of our hiding place. We walked a little on the road, when suddenly
- 16:11that horrible being attacked me by throwing me in the mud. That' s
- 16:17when for the first time I met face to face with the scarecrow. The
- 16:22vision of his face was hideous, a grotesque mixture of torn cloth and rotten
- 16:26flesh. His eyes were sunk and lifeless, emanating an aura of pure evil.
- 16:33I fought with him. His strength was enormous, even though he seemed
- 16:37to be made of straw. Suddenly I will go buried me with all his
- 16:42strength right in the head of that horrible being a rusty hole, which I
- 16:45had found lying in the cornfield. That action made that nightmare being stop fighting
- 16:52with me and then stay still on the ground. Our hearts froze to see
- 16:59him so close and terror paralyzed us for a moment before we reacted and continued
- 17:03to run for our lives. Suddenly my curiosity ended up beating me for what
- 17:11I turned around just to realize that that horrible creature was beginning to rise.
- 17:18Fear paralysed us in the place. As the man approached us, we sought
- 17:22a way out, but the cornfield closed around us, becoming a dark and
- 17:27oppressive labyrinth. The man seemed to know every corner and every road as if
- 17:34he controlled that cursed place. We tried to go back to the van,
- 17:41but we found ourselves trapped between the man and the corn crops, which moved
- 17:45with unexplained fury. The feeling of being trapped in a nightmare became unbearable.
- 17:52The night seemed eternal, wrapped in an oppressive darkness whispering to us. The
- 17:56constant scarecrow danger pursued us unrelentingly by emitting a sharp and macabre sound that stuck
- 18:04in our ears. His presence haunted us as if it were a twisted shadow
- 18:11that fed on our fear. Finally, Irem pointed to the van, which
- 18:17wasn' t that far from where we were and for our fortune, it
- 18:22lit right when we needed it most. That' s when we found a
- 18:27chance and escaped from that cursed town. Some time later, Irem, who
- 18:32had become a little obsessed with what had happened to us, discovered that there
- 18:37was the legend of a people who, in exchange for prosperity and good luck,
- 18:41offered unwary tourists to an evil being with whom the whole people had a
- 18:45covenant. I' m not sure that legend had anything to do with what
- 18:52happened to us. All I know is that that would explain some things about
- 18:56that mysterious town. Whenever we share our experience, we find disbelief and disdain,
- 19:04no one believed in the existence of that monstrous scarecrow or the complicity of
- 19:10the inhabitants of the village. Our words fell on deaf ears and our wounds,
- 19:17both physical and emotional, became invisible marks that only we could feel.
- 19:23Today we live with the knowledge of the truth. We know that that people
- 19:30and their dark covenant exist, but their secret remains hidden from the rest of
- 19:34the world. Despite everything, we do not stop sharing our story in the
- 19:40hope that one day someone will listen and understand the nightmare we live and the
- 19:45evil that haunts us. In that place, forgotten anonymous account
