Latest / Pick Up and Deliver / Top of the Stack, April 2024 (Season 7 Premiere!)
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:08off the train and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:13Well, good afternoon listeners.
- 0:22It's a kind of drizzly night here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:29And you know what that means?
- 0:30More road noise than usual.
- 0:32Whenever cars go by they're going to be extremely noisy.
- 0:34So I may do a little bit more pausing and editing than usual.
- 0:38If I've been counting correctly and I think I have, this is the first episode of season
- 0:457.
- 0:46Because yes, this is the first episode of season 7, episode number 601 of Pick Up and Deliver.
- 0:52Now every year up till now, episode 1 has been roughly January 25th of the season.
- 1:01And this year I got behind in the winter and then January was really busy and so I didn't
- 1:06even, I was still 20 some episodes away when January rolled around.
- 1:10So I just, I ended the episode at the end of March.
- 1:12It's now the beginning of April and I'm starting the new season.
- 1:16We'll see.
- 1:17This one's just going to go as long as it does.
- 1:19Just part of me that has a fantasy that I'm going to file enough episodes that I will finish
- 1:23around December 15th or December 20th with the season.
- 1:27But that would be a significant uptick in production over what I usually do.
- 1:31So who knows what we'll do.
- 1:34I'm just going to be in it for the fun now.
- 1:36For those of you new to the podcast, welcome! Season 7 is here.
- 1:40And as is often the case, the first episode of a month, I do a very particular kind of
- 1:46episode.
- 1:47I do the Top of the Stack.
- 1:48It feels like it's been a couple of months since I mentioned it.
- 1:50So Top of the Stack is a format I swiped from the beloved podcast of nonsensical gamers.
- 1:56They used to do a segment each episode where they would talk about games they want to play
- 2:02that are sort of sitting on top of their metaphorical stack or it might have been an actual
- 2:05stack, I don't know.
- 2:07In my house it is, I'll get the games that are on the top of the stack out and bring them
- 2:10upstairs.
- 2:11So they're ready to play if I need them.
- 2:14As an aside, the one of the hosts of the podcast of nonsensical gamers was Dan Halstad
- 2:20who is the designer of Beez and more recently Aqua, which just came out and has been getting
- 2:27a fair amount of coverage.
- 2:28So good, good on you Dan.
- 2:30Dan's also the person who introduced me to Barenpark, which is one of my favorites.
- 2:34So begin the month, it's the Top of the Stack episode, which is where I review my play
- 2:39experience from previous month and talk a little bit about what I'm planning to do next
- 2:43month.
- 2:44So if you're brand new to the podcast, maybe this isn't the very best episode to listen to
- 2:48because it's a lot of sort of reading of lists and such, but I'll try to make it interesting
- 2:52nonetheless.
- 2:53So this month in May, or in March, I picked out four games and the goal is to play three
- 2:58of them during that month.
- 2:59There are games I haven't played before, although that's not always the case.
- 3:02That was the case this month.
- 3:04And the four games were Forum Trajanum, Bastion, Hunted: Wood Ridge, and Medieval Academy.
- 3:11And I did not get Forum Trajanum or Hunted: Wood Ridge played, but I did manage to succeed
- 3:17at playing Bastion and Medieval Academy.
- 3:20So I got two of my four played, which is about the same as last month and the same as January.
- 3:25So I am now at six out of nine potential plays in my Top of the Stacks.
- 3:32If I just change my goal to two, I'm hitting 100%.
- 3:34I'm not going to do that, but there it is.
- 3:37All right, time for some stats.
- 3:38I had 85 game plays of 56 different games this month, which comes out to a total of 218
- 3:45plays of 98 different games.
- 3:47As usual, many of those plays are in digital form on board game arena.
- 3:52I made significant progress on my shelf of opportunity, reducing it from 66 to 61 plays.
- 3:58And my collection size went up one game from 578 to 579.
- 4:02Now that's not in the right direction.
- 4:04My goal is to make a smaller collection, not a bigger collection, but given that some games
- 4:08I'm getting, some months I end up with like four or five games if I have a good, if I have
- 4:12a strong visit to a goodwill, one game isn't so bad.
- 4:16Also I bought the game with points, credit card points, so it was like free money.
- 4:21That's gamer math right there, baby.
- 4:23Okay, the most played game this month in real life was Aeon's End, which we played four times.
- 4:28And my most played game online were Gaia Project and Daybreak, each of which I played four
- 4:33times.
- 4:34My plays of Through the Ages have slowed down a little bit.
- 4:36I have one person I'm playing with regularly, but at one point I was playing regular games
- 4:41of Through the Ages of three people that has died off a bit.
- 4:44So that's okay.
- 4:45I've played that game so many times.
- 4:48I don't need to play at every moment.
- 4:50On to first plays.
- 4:51I had eleven, oh I had ten games that I played this month for the first time.
- 4:56These were new to me games.
- 4:57They're not all brand new publications.
- 4:58In fact, I think none of them are brand new publications, but they were first time to
- 5:01me.
- 5:02They are Dream Home, Medieval Academy, Forest Shuffle, on Board Game Arena, Wyrmspan,
- 5:10Charty Party, Herd Mentality, Titanic.
- 5:13That's the 2020 release designed by Daryl Adams and Adrian Adamescu with Leonardo and
- 5:20Kate Winslet on the cover, not the older Titanic game, SMARTish, Aeon's End, and Bastion.
- 5:27So a good game.
- 5:29I will be talking about, or a good month.
- 5:31I will be talking about a lot of those new games in upcoming episodes, although I still
- 5:34have some games from February to cover.
- 5:36So it'll be a little while before I'm talking about those, but you'll have to hold your breath
- 5:40until I do.
- 5:41I played one expansion this month.
- 5:44I'm keeping on the pace of, oh that's 20, by the way, that's 21 new games I've played thus
- 5:48far this year.
- 5:49Pretty good pace.
- 5:50In terms of expansions, I played one expansion this month.
- 5:53It was the Forgotten Waters DLC Pack 1, The Kraken's Eye.
- 5:57If you haven't played Forgotten Waters, it's a delight.
- 6:00I will post a link to my previous review of Forgotten Waters in the show notes.
- 6:04It's a storytelling game, or it's a story reading game I guess.
- 6:08It has a light adventure element and lots of choices to make.
- 6:11It's kind of a choose your own adventure game with a bit of randomness.
- 6:15It's very funny, pretty enjoyable.
- 6:17I really like it.
- 6:18We've been playing Freelancers lately, which is like the new version of it, but they did
- 6:22release this one DLC Pack, which we downloaded and enjoyed.
- 6:25It was good, but it's one adventure.
- 6:29It took us almost five hours to play.
- 6:31We played in two halves.
- 6:34And I guess there were five of us playing.
- 6:37It took about five hours, and it was $10.
- 6:40So that's not a terrible deal.
- 6:42You know when you compare it to an EXIT game, which is 15 bucks, and you play in an hour,
- 6:46that's a pretty good deal.
- 6:48But I'm not sure whether I thought it was worth it or not.
- 6:50Yeah, we had a good time.
- 6:51I'll say it was worth it.
- 6:53Almost anything else we had to pay 10 bucks to do it would have been shorter and not
- 6:57as much fun.
- 6:58A good time with it.
- 7:00That's the Forgotten Waters DLC Pack 1.
- 7:03I played a couple more games.
- 7:05I got a couple more games out of the dust. As a reminder.
- 7:08a game is dusty if I've gone a year or more without playing it.
- 7:11So I get a game out of the dust when I play it again.
- 7:14That's like I have dusted it off.
- 7:16And I had three games that I played out of the dust this month.
- 7:19The first one was Sushi Go.
- 7:21I hadn't played Sushi Go in a while.
- 7:22In fact, it had been a one year, five months, and a day between this time and last time.
- 7:27Sushi Go is always a winner.
- 7:28It used to be a very regular staple in our household.
- 7:30We've kind of grown it a little bit, but it is always excellent.
- 7:34I don't have Sushi Go: Party.
- 7:36I did play it online once.
- 7:37I didn't count it as a play because I feel like I didn't really...
- 7:40I don't know.
- 7:41Sometimes I count online plays as plays.
- 7:43Sometimes when I play a new game, I don't count it as a play because I didn't feel like
- 7:47I grasped the game enough.
- 7:48It's kind of weird, all in it.
- 7:50But yeah, so Sushi Go.
- 7:52We played that.
- 7:53It had been a year.
- 7:54I played Potion Explosion, which had been one year, one month, and six days since the last
- 8:00time I played that.
- 8:01That might have been since the last digital play.
- 8:04Who knows how long it had been since the last audio play?
- 8:10Who knows how long it had been since the last real life play?
- 8:14I did on Potion Explosion, but that game is always fun.
- 8:17I really enjoy it.
- 8:19I haven't really played it with super strong competitors in person in this...
- 8:25I mean, when I say super strong competitors, I mean people who have played the game enough
- 8:30to kind of get how it works.
- 8:31One of the people I played with got it pretty fast and kept pace with me, but it took them
- 8:36a round or two, and that's the kind of game where once you get ahead, it's really hard
- 8:40to catch up.
- 8:42So, that was a good time.
- 8:43That was one year, one month, and six days.
- 8:45And then, Century: Golem Edition, we hadn't played in a while either.
- 8:49I like Century.
- 8:50I have all three of the games, and I enjoy them all, but the first one is just head and
- 8:54shoulders above the others.
- 8:55It is really, really good.
- 8:57And that was one year, eight months, and 19 days since the last time I played that.
- 9:01That makes seven games this far, this year, so far.
- 9:03I've dusted off, averaging just over two a month.
- 9:05If I keep up that pace, that's not bad, 24 a year.
- 9:08I'd expect to be more than that, but you never know.
- 9:11A lot of the games that I play, I keep in regular circulation.
- 9:14So, getting older games back to the table is a little harder.
- 9:17I've added a new category to my logging on boardgamegeek, because I am trying to get
- 9:22games played more often.
- 9:24I'll sometimes have plays that I think are interesting, and I want to mention, but they
- 9:27don't fit any of the other categories I'm tracking, so I'm calling these notable plays.
- 9:32And if I have a play of a game that just I wanted to mention on the podcast, I put it in
- 9:36a notable place, so here they are.
- 9:39I got to play Altiplano again.
- 9:40This game continues to reward.
- 9:43I might have to go back, I do really like Altiplano, but I think I'm shifting back to liking
- 9:48Orléans more.
- 9:49The box in Altiplano is better.
- 9:52If you haven't played either of them, they're both bag builders, where you're buying chips,
- 9:55and putting them in a bag, or tokens, and then you pull the tokens out and you get to
- 9:58spend the tokens.
- 9:59In Orléans, you just put the tokens right in the bag when you buy new tokens.
- 10:04And as a result, because you're always putting the used tokens back in the bag, you might not
- 10:09ever get tokens you buy.
- 10:11You could buy a token, and then you use a couple tokens, put them in, you draw the ones
- 10:15you used again, unless you're taking a concerted effort to really get rid of the ones you're using,
- 10:19which is hard to do.
- 10:21You might end up never drawing one of the tiles you've bought.
- 10:24And that stinks.
- 10:25By contrast, in Altiplano, you only refill the bag after you've emptied it, and you put
- 10:31the tokens you're using in a little box, and then you double-mall in once you empty the
- 10:35bag.
- 10:36It actually takes a little bit longer, usually, to get a chip you purchased, because you
- 10:41have to put in the box first.
- 10:42So except in very rare circumstances, you almost never draw the tile you just bought
- 10:47on the turn after you buy it.
- 10:49But by contrast, you'll never, any chip you buy in the first half of the game, you definitely
- 10:54will get to see, because you'll empty out the bag.
- 10:57But I do really like Altiplano, and I really like it with The Traveler expansion, and
- 11:01I haven't played with that in a while, so that may need to get back out to the table again.
- 11:05Sagrada: Artisans, my wife and I finished the campaign of that.
- 11:08That was a lot of fun.
- 11:09We have a whole bunch of bonus windows for it, so I imagine we'll keep playing it for a while.
- 11:13If you get a chance to play Sagrada: Artisans, if you like Sagrada, it's well worth it, I
- 11:16think.
- 11:17Really fun.
- 11:18I guess if I'm doing the same analysis of the per game cost that I put on forgotten waters
- 11:24on Sagrada: Artisans, it's pretty close to the same, roughly the same.
- 11:28Oh, there's a turtle dove.
- 11:29Or a morning dove.
- 11:30A morning dove, excuse me.
- 11:31Sagrada: Artisans was a delight.
- 11:33It's a legacy game, by the way.
- 11:35You're coloring in a coloring book, and over the course of the game, you are learning about
- 11:40or you're playing different stained glass windows and rolling dice and stuff.
- 11:44It's pretty great.
- 11:45I like the lot.
- 11:46Weather Machine.
- 11:47I got to play again.
- 11:48It feels like I'm getting the hang of it now, but I just got clobbered early on.
- 11:52Actually, my son played with us, and early on, he made a move that kind of cut my knees
- 11:56out from under me, and instead of backing off, I kind of doubled down on it, and it was
- 12:00a terrible choice.
- 12:01And I really, I ended up with like 20 points less than my son, who ended up with like 10 points
- 12:06less than the winner.
- 12:07So, clobbered.
- 12:08On my 10 for 10 progress, you'll remember that this year, the 10 for 10 is categories of
- 12:13games, and we are trucking along nicely.
- 12:16We've completed two categories, the Legacy/Campaign category and the alphabet A through
- 12:23J category are done.
- 12:25Several of the other categories are over five, and we're at a total of 47 out of 100 plays
- 12:30already in March, which is a great start.
- 12:33Now, the reality of 10 for 10 is they always get much harder as it goes along because the
- 12:38later ones are games you have to really go out of your way to play, so I'm going to try
- 12:41to get some of those up.
- 12:42We did get our first novelty game played, that was a Titanic.
- 12:45I think I'm going to put one of those on my top of the stack this month.
- 12:48No painting done this month, bummer.
- 12:50I show up for opportunity, I've kind of talked about, and that just brings us to the question
- 12:54of what games I'm going to play for next month.
- 12:58You know, I'm going to die on this hill, I am keeping Hunted: Wode Ridge as the solo
- 13:03game.
- 13:04I'm going to play that eventually, and when I do, yee haw, it's going to be great.
- 13:08So, Hunted: Wode Ridge will stay as my priority game to play for solo games.
- 13:15My heavier game that I want to play is Porta Nigra, I guess.
- 13:20This is the stronghold game from Keisling in 2015.
- 13:27It's a very well-regarded, euro game about, I don't know, building stuff in Rome.
- 13:33I got it at a Goodwill for not nothing.
- 13:35It was like eight bucks or ten bucks, but it's a game that's pretty well-regarded, so I'm
- 13:39looking forward to try that.
- 13:41And then I think I'm going to pick a novelty game, try to play this month because, yeah,
- 13:46because I want to.
- 13:47So, what novelty game am I going to put on there?
- 13:49Well, it is the month of the Titanic sinking, April.
- 13:52So I'm going to say one of my other Titanic games.
- 13:54I have two.
- 13:55I have Titanic, the board game, and I have raised the Titanic, which is a game based on a
- 14:01Clive Cussler novel or movie.
- 14:04Both are look silly in their own ways, and I'm going to play one of them this month.
- 14:08And then finally, I usually pick just one other game that I'm excited to play from the
- 14:12collection.
- 14:13Let's try Alien Artifacts again.
- 14:14This is a game I really wanted to get played, and I've put it on the list a couple times,
- 14:18and I never seem to make it stick.
- 14:20This month, I'm going to make it stick.
- 14:21I'm going to try.
- 14:22So my four games are Porta Nigra, Hunted World Ridge, Raise the Titanic, or Titanic the
- 14:28board game, and Alien Artifacts.
- 14:31So the big question then, what games have you been playing?
- 14:33What games did you play brand new in April or in March of 2024?
- 14:38What games are you playing to play in April?
- 14:40Head over to boardgamegeek guild 3269, or search Pick Up and Deliver boardgamegeek,
- 14:44and you'll find it.
- 14:46And share your gaming from the month with the Pick Up and Deliver pals.
- 14:52It's season seven, I suppose we should have a nickname for you.
- 14:54What do you think is a nickname for a listener of Pick Up and Deliver should be?
- 14:57I want to hear it.
- 14:58You include that in your post.
- 14:59Well thanks for joining me on my walk today.
- 15:01I hope your next walk is a pleasantest mind loss.
- 15:03Bye-bye.
