Latest / Xenomania / Resident Evil FINALLY Got the Games Right... Sort Of - Xenomania 91
Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, when a pharmaceutical plant closes
- 0:04up production in Raccoon City, unemployment is not the biggest issue.
- 0:10On the way out, a toxic chemical is released, turning scientists and residents
- 0:15into bloodthirsty zombies or way worse.
- 0:20A young woman, an inexplicably inept police officer, the chief of police,
- 0:26and a special police unit are left with no option but to try to escape
- 0:31on a secret underground train.
- 0:34Can they get out before the Umbrella Corporation covers its tracks?
- 0:39Find out.
- 0:40This is Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
- 0:45This is Xenomania
- 1:03getting ready to dive into a video game adaptation tonight.
- 1:07Kearns: Nice.
- 1:08Jon: you listen,
- 1:09Ryan: least
- 1:10Jon: if you listen to our intro, you know we're hitting Resident Evil:
- 1:13Welcome to Raccoon City tonight.
- 1:15which inspired me.
- 1:16I wanna ask you guys, what are three of your favorite games of all time?
- 1:23Ryan: I'm curious on yours 'cause I feel like one's gonna pop up definitely.
- 1:27Kearns: or John's?
- 1:28Oh.
- 1:29Ryan: yours
- 1:30Kearns: W- all right, we're gonna start off with Tecmo's Deception,
- 1:33which was a game on PS1 that was like a Japanese port game that was ridiculous.
- 1:41You were in a
- 1:44household, a, a mansion, and, people would come in, and you had to capture
- 1:49or kill them take their bodies and basically sacrifice them to an altar,
- 1:54which gave you whatever the currency was.
- 1:57And then you could build upon the mansion, build better traps, continue on.
- 2:01But I didn't realize how deep it went.
- 2:03Like, you could do all the… There was different endings,
- 2:05multiple different endings, and you could… There were secrets.
- 2:08There were monsters that you could only get to come into the
- 2:10mansion if you played a certain way, and we were young back then.
- 2:13So, like, I wanna replay it again so badly.
- 2:16And they made, like, eight of them, but most of them didn't
- 2:18come to the US because Satan.
- 2:21next one I'm gonna mention is Final Fantasy VII, the original.
- 2:25Ryan: Yep.
- 2:25Kearns: I have to.
- 2:26It was transformative, game, as an RPG.
- 2:29A lot of reading, but oh my God, I played that game all the way through
- 2:33multiple times and just golden ch- you know, Golden Chocobo, get your
- 2:38knights of the round, get Vincent, do the, the deep dive, Dirge of Cerberus
- 2:41and everything afterward, and then you know how it's expanded since then.
- 2:45then, uh, I, I have to say Expedition 33.
- 2:49I have to.
- 2:50All time.
- 2:52Probably my favorite gaming experience of all time at this point.
- 2:57is just a beautiful piece of art.
- 2:59If you have not played Expedition 33, stop what you're doing, get a divorce, do
- 3:03what you have to do, and play that game
- 3:08And play that game.
- 3:10Ryan: I second that.
- 3:11Kearns: Yeah,
- 3:11Ryan: second
- 3:12Kearns: on his way.
- 3:13He's going to, he's going to take an ax to his problem.
- 3:19I was gonna say, we, we can't be your alibi if you go off camera, buddy.
- 3:21You gotta freeze frame it
- 3:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:24Ryan: put like, what was it?
- 3:26The, uh, the cutout, a cutout of John right there
- 3:28Kearns: That would've been nice.
- 3:29But yeah, guys, I c- I'm gonna repeat it one more time.
- 3:32Play Expedition It's phenomenal.
- 3:39Perri, it … All right, Ryan, what about you?
- 3:42Ryan: I'm, I'm a little taken back by that 'cause I thought you?
- 3:44were gonna mention Elden Ring.
- 3:46Kearns: I loved Eld- I loved Elden Ring, but I can't, I can't, like, throw
- 3:49out Elden Ring over some of the games that f- like, built the foundation.
- 3:53I'm a huge FromSoft guy.
- 3:55Played through every FromSoft game to platinum, including Demon Souls,
- 4:00and I cannot… I mean, Tecmo's Deception I could say maybe swap out
- 4:05for Bloodborne or Elden Ring or Dark Souls III, but that's the other problem.
- 4:09They're all fighting each other, the FromSoft games.
- 4:13So it's tricky, right?
- 4:15Ryan: You gotta give him a fourth on that one, 'cause he is… He loves those games.
- 4:19I remember that one morning you walked in, I was like, "You
- 4:21platinumed it?" You were like, "Yeah."
- 4:23Kearns: Yeah, I did.
- 4:24I did Platinum
- 4:25Jon: Three.
- 4:26Kearns: fast.
- 4:27Just the
- 4:28Jon: Three
- 4:28Kearns: I'm gonna keep Tecmo's Deception then just because
- 4:31I want people to find it.
- 4:32Scrounge through, find it somewhere.
- 4:34I don't even think it's on the PlayStation Store
- 4:37Ryan: No, no.
- 4:37It's, uh, you gotta go buy an old school PlayStation at a pawn shop and
- 4:42Kearns: No way.
- 4:42Really?
- 4:43Ryan: to find the game.
- 4:43Yeah
- 4:44Kearns: You could probably get an emulated version of it on the PC.
- 4:47Ryan: Oh
- 4:47Jon: Bet you can
- 4:48Kearns: What about you, Ryan?
- 4:49What are your games?
- 4:51Ryan: So I gotta start off with The Witcher 3.
- 4:53Uh, it's one of the more recent games, came out in 2015.
- 4:57It's gotten a lot of love.
- 4:58It's coming out with a remaster or a updated graphics for the PS5
- 5:03on September 29th with the DLC.
- 5:05I feel like this is one of the games that I've played multiple
- 5:08times because the story's excellent.
- 5:11Geralt's an excellent character.
- 5:13I found new things that I didn't find in my last two playthroughs, which is
- 5:18pretty cool, and I think that's based on the raising of the difficulty.
- 5:22I'm doing it on a harder level now.
- 5:24So it's like there's more to it, and it just… It- The world's
- 5:28expansive, and you get to know the characters, and you get, get close
- 5:32to them, and it's, it's phenomenal.
- 5:34If you haven't played Wild Hunt, give it a play.
- 5:36And if you wanna know how to do the cheat, just type in the comments
- 5:39and I'll explain how to do the cheat for you 'cause it's, it's worth it.
- 5:43my number two game, I was having a hard time with this one 'cause,
- 5:48like, I always think of my top fives and stuff, but I have to go with
- 5:55Revenge for the N64.
- 5:57Kearns: wrestling game?
- 5:58Ryan: I love that game?
- 5:59I, I'll… Listen, my uncle and I would play that game for hours
- 6:03where we had our own storyline.
- 6:05For example, there's these, like, modded wrestlers in there that were, like,
- 6:10fake of course, and some were based on real wrestlers with different names.
- 6:13But his team was Dr. Frank and The Executioner, and mine was the THQ Man
- 6:19and Aki Man, and we had like a whole storyline where, like, he had the
- 6:23Executioners and then they disbanded, then I brought in the fake Executioners.
- 6:29And it was just like weekend was fun.
- 6:31And, like, school WCW, like, you had everyone, Scott Steiner, Hulk Hogan,
- 6:37Piper, Bret Hart, uh, Sting, Raven.
- 6:42Like, I can keep going on.
- 6:44Goldberg.
- 6:44Like, the roster was so expansive.
- 6:46And, uh, I… Sorry, I can talk about it all night.
- 6:49But, uh, my number three has to go to Mass Effect 2, and it's the sequel to one of
- 6:55the best trilogies in sci-fi game history, I believe, because it was one of the first
- 7:00games to actually carry your save from the first game and continue it on the second,
- 7:04and it just makes the story more…
- 7:06Again, like, you're closer to the story.
- 7:08You're closer to the characters.
- 7:10It's, like, years later, so you see where your former teammates are doing.
- 7:14You're, like, trying to build this new life, and it's just great storytelling
- 7:18that leads up to, I think, a pretty good conclusion for Mass Effect 3.
- 7:22But a lot of people will concur on that.
- 7:26John, I'm curious, are you gonna do more horror games or are
- 7:30you gonna do a nice mix here?
- 7:33Jon: this is, is definitely kind of a wild card list right here 'cause I went
- 7:36through like sort of three different time periods, and it's really games that
- 7:41I've probably put the most time into.
- 7:44So the first one I wanna mention is, all the way back to the Sega Genesis.
- 7:49It's a game called Shining Force.
- 7:52Ryan: Yep.
- 7:52Jon: It was like my, my intro to the RPG video game world, and
- 7:58I c- uh, I didn't even own it.
- 8:00I borrowed it from a friend, and I th- I kept it for like three years 'cause
- 8:05I, I just, it like, I'd finish it and start over and… 'Cause it, it was the
- 8:11like it's, it didn't have the memory or any of that, the ability to, you know,
- 8:18have that much of a diverse storyline, but there were so many characters you
- 8:23could add to your party and use, but you couldn't use them all at the same time.
- 8:28I just wanted to like use all of them.
- 8:32So I, the, you know, just kept rolling through it,
- 8:35Kearns: like Final Fantasy VI.
- 8:37Ryan: Yeah.
- 8:39Kearns: there's a lot of characters and
- 8:40Jon: Mmhmm Mmhmm
- 8:42Kearns: cool.
- 8:43That's cool
- 8:43Jon: Uh, um, the next one, I mean, is pro- probably the most known
- 8:48game on here, and it's Skyrim.
- 8:50Kearns: Oh,
- 8:50Jon: I…
- 8:51Ryan: Yeah
- 8:51Jon: The hours I put into that game, like I got way closer to
- 8:55platinuming that than, is realistic for someone who plays games like I do.
- 9:00You
- 9:00know, like an hour or two here or there, and like, you know, over the
- 9:04course of months and years sometimes.
- 9:07But Skyrim, I, I mean, it also helped that I broke my foot right when it came out,
- 9:13Kearns: Oh,
- 9:13Jon: so I couldn't do, I couldn't do a whole lot of other stuff.
- 9:16So I played a ton and ton of Skyrim, and the story's so, so much fun and,
- 9:22and there's a lot of things you can do differently through the course of that.
- 9:26And the last one I want to highlight is, you know, one that got a bad rap 'cause
- 9:30it was really buggy on its release.
- 9:33Uh, but Days Gone.
- 9:35The, uh, Day- Days Gone hits every one of my, my joy spots, you know?
- 9:42Like, h- the open world and the zombies and the, the like… I, there
- 9:48are people who mock the story 'cause like, I mean, it's not like a complex
- 9:52story, but it's a really good story.
- 9:55You know, it's, it… Days Gone is a lot of fun and, and it, like, it's…
- 10:02There are parts of it that are surprisingly difficult,
- 10:05like especially hordes
- 10:07Ryan: Yep.
- 10:08Jon: But,
- 10:10Ryan: you
- 10:10Jon: know, pick
- 10:11Ryan: it get, it gets a bad rep because it was supposed to be a
- 10:15start of a trilogy, PlayStation just dropped the ball on it, and I
- 10:19Jon: Well, yeah.
- 10:21Yeah, PlayStation dropped any sequels because it wasn't as successful out
- 10:26of the block that, it was expected to be because there were a lot of bugs.
- 10:32And like, I mean, I played it within a couple of months of it being released.
- 10:36I bought PlayStation just for Days Gone
- 10:40Ryan: That's cool
- 10:41Jon: You know, so i- yeah, there's bug- there's still bugs.
- 10:44Like, they r- did a whole PS5 remaster.
- 10:47There's still some bugs in there, but m- mostly it's like, it's not stuff
- 10:52that is… ruins your experience.
- 10:56But it was panned when it came out, and that killed the, any hope of sequels
- 11:03Ryan: I find it shocking you find bugs still in it, 'cause
- 11:06like I haven't found any yet.
- 11:08Like in the original gameplay they would
- 11:10Mmhmm
- 11:10missions and
- 11:12Mmhmm
- 11:13Jon: Mmhmm
- 11:15Ryan: that, yet, so
- 11:16I
- 11:16Jon: mean, it,
- 11:17Ryan: then
- 11:18Jon: you'd, you know, you'd ru- you'd run into zombies that
- 11:20sorta, like, didn't die fully.
- 11:24They'd, you
- 11:24know, they'd be, like, still sorta like standing and twitching at you, and
- 11:28like, they, there were a few times where you'd, like, fall through the earth.
- 11:32But mostly, most of those times were like you were trying to
- 11:37exploit something that you probably shouldn't have really been able to do
- 11:45Ryan: Fair.
- 11:46Fair on that
- 11:49Kearns: Right.
- 11:49Days Gone was your last one or your second one?
- 11:53Jon: My last one.
- 11:53Yep, it was, Shining Force: Skyrim and Days Gone
- 11:56Kearns: And what game are we doing for this episode again?
- 11:58I forget.
- 12:00Ryan: Evil
- 12:00Kearns: right,
- 12:01the
- 12:02Jon: Evil
- 12:02Kearns: Survival horror.
- 12:04Maybe not the GOAT, but definitely the beginning of the modern
- 12:07survival horror experience
- 12:10Ryan: Definitely forefront.
- 12:11I feel like it started with this good old PC classic called Phantasmagoria,
- 12:16Kearns: I love that game.
- 12:18I couldn't get past the part in the stupid freaking office though, where, like,
- 12:21you couldn't figure out how to get out.
- 12:23You were, like, messing with a computer and stuff.
- 12:26There was so many disks to that game.
- 12:29Yeah, I'm sure there, I'm sure there was, but I couldn't figure
- 12:31it out s- and it pissed me off.
- 12:35what was your first experience with Resident Evil?
- 12:38Ryan: Mine going to EB Games, seeing that cover with Chris and like saying
- 12:44director's cut, and then looking at the back and being like, "This is
- 12:47a game I need to play." And being told no until high school where I
- 12:52was able to get a copy of four at
- 12:55Kearns: high school You sheltered, sweet, sweet summer child
- 12:59Ryan: Like my cousin, my cousins had it, so I was able
- 13:01to play a little bit of two and
- 13:03Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 13:03Ryan: on the original PlayStation So I'd say like more like playing it two
- 13:08is my first experience and you're in the alleyway and you're Leon which we'll
- 13:15get to that later but Leon's badass in the game And like you're stuck in the
- 13:20alleyway and I had to get out of it and try to find a key and it's intense And
- 13:25it's just like a thrill ride that you want more and more of And I feel like
- 13:30they've all done that And yeah some have fallen off like six for example
- 13:34but they've come back with seven and especially eight And Requiem which came
- 13:39out was I heard a excellent experience
- 13:43Kearns: Yeah, it looks like, the of the different types of gameplay
- 13:47from the hits of the series
- 13:49Jon: Mmhmm
- 13:49Kearns: out for them, which makes me happy.
- 13:51How about you, John?
- 13:54Jon: Oh man, it was, um, shortly after it came out.
- 13:57I was living in a three-bedroom apartment with four other guys a-
- 14:03and, and a woman, and, you know, two or three other people who basically
- 14:07lived there most of the time.
- 14:09And, you know, like a couple of us would sit in front of
- 14:12the TV and pass the controller.
- 14:15"Oh, you died?
- 14:17Your turn.
- 14:18Oh, you died.
- 14:19His turn." And, you know, you just pass it around, and you'd be hanging out
- 14:23and doing the things you do when you hang out and you're in your early 20s.
- 14:28And it just, I having a great time with some great friends.
- 14:31It, like, that's what Resident Evil was always about for me
- 14:34Kearns: Yeah, that's huge though.
- 14:36That's huge
- 14:38Ryan: I would love to imagine like your guys first experience like that iconic
- 14:44there we go when the zombie like turns
- 14:47Kearns: He's in, he's in Wel- um, Welcome to Raccoon City.
- 14:50Did you see the little Easter eggs?
- 14:51Jon: Mmhmm
- 14:52Ryan: I
- 14:52Jon: Yep.
- 14:52I
- 14:53Ryan: popped for that
- 14:53Kearns: Yeah
- 14:54Ryan: Yes And Jada was like What the hell And I'm like It's
- 14:57Kearns: You wouldn't get it.
- 14:58You wouldn't get it.
- 15:00But, uh, fifth grade, South Park came out the same year, I think.
- 15:04Resident Evil.
- 15:05Um, there was something else big.
- 15:07my PlayStation buddy, Matt, I was, like, over at his house, and he
- 15:12s- I don't know if he rented it or he owned it, but that was the…
- 15:15Then I had to get a copy, my own
- 15:18Jon: Mmhmm
- 15:18Kearns: Evil.
- 15:19Resident
- 15:20Jon: Mmhmm Mmhmm
- 15:22Kearns: uh, we both chose Jill to start because we were basic.
- 15:25But yeah.
- 15:26Um, the one thing we still quote Barry to this day stuff, "It's The
- 15:33Jon: Mmhmm
- 15:34Kearns: Evil was horrible
- 15:36Ryan: I was very upset that didn't make it in the final cut of this film and I was
- 15:40waiting for that line and I was very upset
- 15:42Kearns: I couldn't even figure out if Barry was in this movie
- 15:45Ryan: He was he was the skinny guy with no
- 15:47Kearns: Which makes so much sense.
- 15:49Yeah, we have a lot to talk about for the movie, but yeah, that, that was
- 15:51my kind of intro into Resident Evil.
- 15:54Do you think this movie like stacks up with the game at all?
- 15:59'Cause the other ones really aren't about the game
- 16:04Jon: No, the other ones have never, never felt like Resident Evil.
- 16:10And I, yeah, I think Raccoon City is better than that franchise is.
- 16:16But you know, it's… Is it Resi- Like for me, Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 2, some
- 16:22of it's nostalgia, but a lot of it is the actual games, are way up on a pedestal.
- 16:28Like, they are, you know, for me, like gateway horror games.
- 16:34I wasn't playing a lot of horror games.
- 16:35There weren't a ton of horror games that I- were on my radar.
- 16:39And I like
- 16:40Kearns: then there was like Clock Tower and Silent Hill came a little later
- 16:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:45Kearns: There wasn't much… I mean, in Japan there was.
- 16:48They had some wacky crap out there, but not really for us.
- 16:53was a lot of, um, there was a lot of regulation on blood, if I recall.
- 16:57But Resident Evil seemed to skate right by all that.
- 17:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:01Kearns: So
- 17:01Ryan: had we
- 17:02Jon: res- resident
- 17:02Ryan: adaptations
- 17:04Kearns: Hmm?
- 17:05Ryan: We had some adaptations though
- 17:07Kearns: Of what?
- 17:09Ryan: A Nightmare on Elm Street Friday 13th for the Nintendo
- 17:11Kearns: they're terrible games.
- 17:13Jon: Yeah.
- 17:14Ryan: Let's
- 17:15mean
- 17:15Kearns: It's terrible.
- 17:15Jon: there, there was a really…
- 17:17Kearns: Games people bought
- 17:19Jon: Yeah.
- 17:19There was a really long p- time period in there where the, the,
- 17:23the games based on movies were as bad as the movies based on games
- 17:28Kearns: Yeah, fair point.
- 17:29Jon: I, I, think it's probably with the Lord of the Rings games
- 17:33that that started to change.
- 17:35Like when the, when the movies came out, those games were like more in
- 17:40line with being actual good games.
- 17:44I guess, GoldenEye was up there too, but it wasn't… I mean, that,
- 17:49that was j- that w- that, that could've been anything though.
- 17:52That didn't have to be James Bond.
- 17:54Kearns: because of the campaign mode It was
- 17:57Jon: Yeah.
- 17:58Kearns: and the
- 17:58Jon: Yeah
- 17:59Kearns: And that was the first uh without that you don't get Halo
- 18:03Ryan: No
- 18:03Kearns: and stuff like that Um GoldenEye really trailblazed all of
- 18:06that But it's safe to say Resident Evil this film Welcome to Raccoon City
- 18:11pays homage and is at least faithful to the video game All right so I
- 18:16Jon: Mmhmm
- 18:17Kearns: that too by the way Um but I have some gripes I have some gripes
- 18:23Jon: I d-
- 18:23Kearns: change a lot
- 18:24Jon: it's, far from perfect.
- 18:27They
- 18:27They, definitely take some liberties.
- 18:29Uh, some of them don't work
- 18:34Kearns: Well Leon Leon's first of all it's not even the fact that his race
- 18:39is not the same cause Leon video game
- 18:42Jon: I- Irrelevant to me
- 18:43Kearns: pretty Caucasian fella and
- 18:46Jon: Mmhmm
- 18:46Kearns: in the m film is not But the it's
- 18:49Jon: Mmhmm
- 18:49Kearns: that they change his entire character He's like a lame
- 18:54weirdo who doesn't do anything
- 18:58Jon: Yeah.
- 18:59He, feels like the type of character you put in this stuff to be a comic
- 19:05relief, except they never really give him anything comedic to do.
- 19:10So he just comes off as inept
- 19:13Ryan: Uh he's uh you know watching it and you see the the trailers and stuff
- 19:20and you're hoping Okay this is They're gonna nail this character And then
- 19:23they make him more of like the comedic effect and inapt and a bumbling buffoon
- 19:28And then it's like it doesn't compare Like in the beginning of the second
- 19:33game he's riding in the motorcycle it's his first day he goes to the
- 19:36Mmhmm
- 19:37Jon: Like
- 19:38Ryan: he off the first zombie goes to the police station and then takes
- 19:42action And in this it's like he's like sleeping on the job he's unaware
- 19:47and that's not the Leon like I fell in love with You know And I feel I
- 19:53I'm being honest Leon's like Yeah I
- 19:56Kearns: Is it it's the hair Is it Probably the it's probably the hair
- 20:00Ryan: the blue eyes
- 20:01Kearns: flips
- 20:03Ryan: Yeah damn straight Leather jacket
- 20:06Kearns: I
- 20:06Ryan: in the
- 20:06Kearns: unpopular opinion I don't think anybody gave a damn
- 20:09about Leon until Resident Evil 4
- 20:12Ryan: Agreed
- 20:13Kearns: cared about his character until Resident Evil 4 and then they were like
- 20:16That's when the Leon fanboy stuff started
- 20:19Ryan: Everyone wanted Claire
- 20:21Kearns: Yep
- 20:22Ryan: No
- 20:23Kearns: Claire Redfield Yeah I said yep
- 20:24Ryan: Oh okay
- 20:25Jon: Claire
- 20:25Ryan: I was
- 20:26Jon: like
- 20:27Claire, and Jill
- 20:28Kearns: Valentine Yeah nobody played Chris as like a first option
- 20:31really in Resident Evil the original
- 20:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:35Kearns: started with Jill probably because you got the Glickie Chris if
- 20:37you remember started with the knife
- 20:39Ryan: Which is
- 20:40Mmhmm
- 20:41Jon: Yeah, I, I always hated that part.
- 20:45Just, you just give me the good stuff.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:48Just give me the good stuff
- 20:49Kearns: beating it in under two hours You got the f unlimited rocket launcher
- 20:53Jon: Yeah
- 20:55Kearns: It was the best But
- 20:57Jon: I never even tried to do that.
- 20:59Kearns: Oh I
- 20:59Jon: Never even tried to do that
- 21:01Kearns: time I heard about it I also played through Final Fantasy VII with
- 21:04all the stupid lies to try to keep Aerith alive and st I used to do that stuff
- 21:07all the time Half the time it would work
- 21:10Ryan: she make it
- 21:11Kearns: No she does not make it She stays very dead Um the other characters
- 21:16what do you guys think Um who c who'd they get right who'd they get wrong
- 21:21Ryan: Claire 100 right She's a
- 21:23Mmhmm
- 21:24they kept her story so intact especially when she rides in on the truck when she
- 21:29gets the motorcycle her style her attitude that's Claire Redfield to a T And I feel
- 21:35like it was more of her being from Code Veronica more which I didn't mind she had
- 21:42more of a harsher attitude in that video game while in the second one she was a
- 21:45little more like What's going on All right We're gonna do this and figure everything
- 21:49out I think she they nailed her right
- 21:51Kearns: Okay
- 21:52Jon: Mmhmm
- 21:53Yeah, I think Claire was good.
- 21:55I think, Jill and Chris were okay.
- 21:59They weren't given a lot to do.
- 22:02Like, there wasn't a lot of character between… Like, they were just
- 22:06almost exclusively fighting zombies
- 22:10Kearns: Chris got the
- 22:10Jon: the whole movie.
- 22:11Kearns: in the darkness
- 22:12Jon: Yeah.
- 22:14Kearns: I mean that was
- 22:15Jon: Yeah, no
- 22:15Kearns: but it was like okay that's what you do I guess I will save this for
- 22:19later actually cause there's something I desperately wanna bring up that
- 22:22would've made this movie so much better But yeah let's see Barry we already
- 22:27talked about was a complete whiff did they even mention like some of the
- 22:31other f Resident Evil 1 characters in the mansion Like Carlos was he involved
- 22:36Ryan: No
- 22:37Kearns: No they didn't do any of that
- 22:38Ryan: the they mention the pilot The pilot has the same ending
- 22:42in the game which I appreciated
- 22:44Kearns: Mmhmm
- 22:44Ryan: where he's playing on the phone and they you know there's really no buildup
- 22:48on his character I feel like that was a nice Easter egg But I did enjoy Wesker
- 22:53Mmhmm
- 22:53Ooh
- 22:53they d I because they they did it properly because remember in the first game
- 22:58he's all buddy buddy with them and he's aware of everything But in the game you
- 23:03really don't know that because they're you're focused on Jill and Chris but
- 23:07they focus on that in the movie and I I liked that little tidbit the actor's a
- 23:12decent actor It's the gentleman who was in The Umbrella Academy I think if they
- 23:16continued with it especially with that midcredit scene it would've done better
- 23:21cause they did nail Ada Wong I'm just
- 23:24Kearns: I'd like to nail Ada Wong
- 23:28Jon: One of us had to say it
- 23:33Kearns: Somebody had to say it Wesker was too Gronkowski for me in this
- 23:39Jon: Yeah, I can see that
- 23:41Kearns: He's so not Wesker to me so I had a really hard time suspending that
- 23:45Cause they do that That's a common theme in this movie is that they do not try to
- 23:50make the characters resemble or act in the way you expect the characters to act
- 23:55based on the games And in some places it's fine Like some places they do a
- 23:59really good job like you guys mentioned In some things like Wesker was totally
- 24:03miscast in my opinion And I was like All right well I'll I'll try my best here
- 24:09Jon: Mmhmm
- 24:09Kearns: have like a redemption thing with him they do too which
- 24:12was kinda lame He was never re a redemption guy He was always
- 24:16Jon: Yeah.
- 24:18Uh-huh.
- 24:18Kearns: buddybuddy thing was fake He was always working for Umbrella
- 24:22So like him being like I wasn't gonna fire a little girl or whatever
- 24:26at the end I was like Yes you
- 24:27Jon: Uh-huh.
- 24:28Kearns: You're Wesker
- 24:29Jon: Yeah.
- 24:30He, he's also, he's sort of more an unwilling participant in the movie.
- 24:38You know, like he, he's kinda reluctant every time he has to
- 24:41do something, and that's not the character I remember from the games
- 24:47Ryan: Well they definitely change it cause I I I don't He's not working
- 24:50for Umbrella in my opinion Cause after Umbrella crumbles in the games he's
- 24:56working for another c corporation I think
- 24:59Mmhmm
- 24:59was the start of that If they were to continue the series I think they were
- 25:04just jumping into that story which would've led to I think five which
- 25:09is a whole different game in itself
- 25:12Kearns: Oh you're talking about just the films like what they
- 25:15were doing from the film scripts
- 25:17Ryan: That's where I was going with it because like I was expecting
- 25:20it to be Umbrella and he It's not Umbrella it's a separate corporation
- 25:24he's working for and I'm forgetting the name of that corporation but
- 25:27it's like the alternative Umbrella
- 25:29Kearns: The owner the Umbrella's a shell company for
- 25:34Ryan: I think
- 25:34Kearns: it Something like that Google it real quick
- 25:37Ryan: a lo there's a lot of lore
- 25:38Kearns: Tell the fans what they wanna hear There is a lot of
- 25:41lore Once you start getting into Code Veronica before you even get
- 25:45Jon: Mmhmm
- 25:45Kearns: RE 4 where it blows up more lore Code Veronica really really expand And
- 25:50without Code Veronica you don't get The Village you don't get Requiem you don't
- 25:54get any of the weird stuff we're getting now cause that's how you figure out
- 25:57what the progenitor virus is which is
- 26:00Jon: Mmhmm
- 26:00Kearns: T virus the G virus and everything are derived from And damn
- 26:03it you people listening you better be nerding out because this is good stuff
- 26:08This is good stuff Tricell's the name of the company All right So all right
- 26:14Ryan: crumbles which starts the whole thing in seven the
- 26:19the liquid and everything
- 26:21Kearns: All right everybody I'm gonna trigger these guys real quick
- 26:23Um would this be better or worse than George Romero's Resident Evil
- 26:31Jon: I want Romero's Resident Evil so bad.
- 26:33I wish, I really, really wish it had gotten made.
- 26:36I mean, it's written.
- 26:39Kearns: I wanna
- 26:39Jon: It's
- 26:40Kearns: at
- 26:40Jon: written.
- 26:40I, I f- I found the script online today.
- 26:43I didn't realize that the script was available.
- 26:45Kearns: Oh we gotta read it
- 26:46Ryan: cool
- 26:47Jon: I texted it to you guys.
- 26:48It's in your text.
- 26:49Uh,
- 26:49Kearns: Oh
- 26:50Jon: you guys… Yeah.
- 26:51there's a whole documentary on it too that like if you're familiar
- 26:55with it, any of this at all, it's, it's really mostly just retreading
- 27:01ground that's already been laid out.
- 27:03But, you know, so it's 1998, you're right near the release of Resident Evil 2.
- 27:10In fact, Romero did a Resident Evil 2 release trailer that only aired in Japan.
- 27:17He did the trailer.
- 27:19He did the RE 2 trailer.
- 27:21Ryan: I'm looking that up right
- 27:22Jon: g-
- 27:23Ryan: Like
- 27:24Jon: y- you can tell.
- 27:26You can tell.
- 27:26And he, he put the work into adapting.
- 27:31The company that ended up doing the Resident Evil franchise, Constantin, a
- 27:35German company, had hired him to write and probably direct a film adaptation.
- 27:43So he, he studied the game.
- 27:45He had a production assistant play and record the entire game so he could sit
- 27:51and focus on elements to make it the game.
- 27:57Ryan: Smart
- 27:58Jon: Like, full on.
- 27:59Like, I didn't know until today there was access to the
- 28:02script, so I haven't read it.
- 28:04But allegedly, it's more true to the first game.
- 28:09the one exception being he writes in a romance angle between
- 28:13Jill and Chris, which is sort of hinted at in Raccoon City.
- 28:18Like, there's sort of like a little thing with them going on there.
- 28:22but beyond that, it's pretty true, and he included everything.
- 28:26He had the sharks, he had the giant snakes, he had the tyrant.
- 28:29He put… E- everything is in that script.
- 28:32One of the big issues, apparently, was the estimated filming budget
- 28:38was gonna be in the neighborhood of $30 to $40 million because of
- 28:43how much he was putting into it.
- 28:46So that was strike one against it.
- 28:48But the big strike against it comes from, uh, the produc- a producer at Capcom na-
- 28:52Kearns: Oh no
- 28:54Jon: Yoshiki Okamoto, whose…
- 28:59His quotes on this are blatant and indicative of why there are so few
- 29:05good Capcom adaptations, I think.
- 29:07He said it's not good
- 29:12Which
- 29:13Ryan: disbelieve that
- 29:14Jon: I fi- I find it hard to believe that it's not good.
- 29:17But, uh, you know, maybe, maybe.
- 29:20And he f- so he fires Romero, and it becomes Paul W.S. Anderson's thing,
- 29:25and you know where it goes from there.
- 29:28Kearns: He must have had a particular taste for the the hot garbage
- 29:31that they came out with then
- 29:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:33Mmhmm
- 29:34Well, he…
- 29:35Kearns: crap
- 29:36Jon: Yeah, he also wanted it to be lighter, more teen-friendly,
- 29:41which isn't what Romero wrote.
- 29:43Romero wrote Romero.
- 29:46It's apparently violent and gory and brutal.
- 29:51It's like, it's like everything you would, you would expect from a Romero
- 29:54or a zombie movie, except, yeah, with, with Resi- the Resident Evil name.
- 30:00But the other thing they wanted is, and they got ultimately,
- 30:03was a more action-heavy movie,
- 30:07Kearns: Mmhmm
- 30:08Jon: and that, that's really what they wind up with with the Resident Evils
- 30:11Kearns: the Furious um sort of timeframe and
- 30:14Jon: Yeah.
- 30:15Kearns: type
- 30:16Jon: Yeah.
- 30:16Yeah
- 30:17Kearns: Yeah Um I mean it it had its function in society at the
- 30:20time It wasn't I never thought the movie was good I wasn't
- 30:23Jon: Mmhmm
- 30:24Kearns: away by Resident
- 30:25Jon: No.
- 30:26Kearns: of the sequels
- 30:26Ryan: No
- 30:27Kearns: Um
- 30:28Jon: No
- 30:28Kearns: but I was like I like Milla Jovovich This is fi I like uh Michelle
- 30:32Rodriguez This is fine There's a licker That makes me happy I kinda wish I
- 30:38could see a hunter like that sorta
- 30:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:41Kearns: So I don't know why they're so scared to put hunters in these
- 30:44damn movies by the way Give me some
- 30:46Jon: That was, that's apparently in Romero's version too.
- 30:50He put it all in there
- 30:53Ryan: So he basically did what Warren Beatty did for Dick Tracy is
- 30:56include everything just in case it
- 30:59Mmhmm
- 31:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:01Mm-hmm.
- 31:02Ryan: gotten their money back on it I believe Um
- 31:05Jon: I
- 31:05Ryan: reading a little bit like he nails the first scene and then
- 31:09Mmhmm
- 31:10he nails the ending like the
- 31:12Mmhmm
- 31:13if fans know what I'm talking about Like he writes it so well where it's
- 31:18like an exact image of the game It's crazy that they didn't wanna do it They
- 31:23would've made 10 times the money on it
- 31:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:26And I, I mean,
- 31:27I
- 31:27I, have personally
- 31:28Kearns: Evil movie is a high order It's a tall
- 31:31Jon: 40, 40 million, 40 million, 40, 30 to 40 million.
- 31:35Kearns: 40 m 40 to make it but 400 to earn for 10 times that's
- 31:41Jon: Probably not.
- 31:42Probably not.
- 31:42Kearns: bar
- 31:43Jon: But the, the other thing with those, the other thing with those
- 31:47numbers is we've discussed on previous episodes, Romero, all his movies
- 31:52combined didn't hit that budget.
- 31:55So he pro- I mean, if they had come to him and said, "Listen, we can't
- 31:59make this movie this way 'cause we can't afford it," Romero has showed
- 32:04throughout his entire career that he could produce quality for less
- 32:12They just didn't give it to them.
- 32:13They ju- they, you know, it is what it is, I guess, but we, I think we know why
- 32:19Capcom has never had a good adaptation
- 32:24Kearns: It's that Suzuki guy
- 32:26Jon: Or
- 32:27Ryan: of
- 32:27Jon: of a live action.
- 32:30Uh, I'll, I'll say a live action adaptation.
- 32:33I don't know, you know, I know, I think there's some
- 32:36of
- 32:36some of the an- animated ones are maybe okay.
- 32:39I, like, listen, we know I don't watch a ton of animation, so I've seen the…
- 32:44Ryan: II
- 32:45Jon: I've seen at least one of the Resident Evil animateds and it's okay.
- 32:50It's not my thing though, but it's okay
- 32:52Kearns: All right guys You know what it's time for
- 32:56Ryan: Street Fighter
- 32:56Kearns: It's time for for a game
- 32:59Ryan: that's amazing
- 33:00Kearns: Street
- 33:01Jon: is time for a game
- 33:02Kearns: What are you talking about
- 33:04Ryan: You you said there's not good Capcom movies Street Fighter
- 33:07II the animated movie's excellent
- 33:09Jon: I, I, I amended that.
- 33:10I amended that.
- 33:11I, I added live action,
- 33:14Ryan: Okay
- 33:14Jon: I, can't speak on the animated stuff 'cause I didn't see most of it.
- 33:18But live action, I think we're about to discover that in our game.
- 33:22I'm not gonna give you guys… You're not gonna have to guess.
- 33:27but we're doing video game adaptations,
- 33:30Ryan: Slash or
- 33:31Jon: or stash.
- 33:32Um, but I'm gonna change up the numbers because I think you're g- it's gonna-
- 33:41it'll be more interesting to me to make you guys stash five of these movies,
- 33:46to make you have to decide what's good enough to keep around in the world
- 33:52Ryan: I have a
- 33:52Kearns: Oh cause they're all that bad They're
- 33:54Jon: Yeah, they're, the- these are, these are not great.
- 33:58so we're gonna start with Alone in the Dark
- 34:01Kearns: I played this
- 34:02Jon: with Tara Reid and Christian Slater
- 34:09Kearns: Yeah Well slash Wait no Yeah I don't wanna stash this Slash
- 34:16Ryan: Slash too They missed the ball with this I was excited for this cause
- 34:20I played the game too and I'm like Oh they're gonna do this and they fumbled
- 34:24so badly I was very disappointed
- 34:28Jon: I gotta tell you guys, I woulda, I woulda kept this one.
- 34:31I kinda like this bad movie.
- 34:35I kinda like how bad this is.
- 34:37I kinda like it.
- 34:38It's Uwe Boll, so you know it's not good, but I kinda like it.
- 34:44All right, movie number two, the original Resident Evil
- 34:51Kearns: Just knowing your game I'm gonna have to stash this have to stash
- 34:56this because of that I said it's I don't know it's like taking medicine
- 35:00when you're sick It's a necessary evil
- 35:03Jon: Mmhmm
- 35:04Kearns: didn't like what Cause it's it's not bad in and of itself It's bad
- 35:09because of the potential that's lost That's what makes it bad It's not what
- 35:15Jon: Yeah, I would agree with that
- 35:16Kearns: has And Milla Jovovich's character isn't even a character in
- 35:21the games am I correct Yeah this is ridiculous This is ridiculous I don't
- 35:27wanna stash it but I think I have to
- 35:31Jon: Brian, did you answer?
- 35:33Ryan: No not yet I am gonna stash it as well uh just cause I don't know what
- 35:38you're gonna put on here Again I hope you have one that I'll definitely stash
- 35:41But the trailers I feel like misled you cause you're thinking it's Resident Evil
- 35:48and you're gonna watch the game in movie form and he flips you upside down and
- 35:53I didn't like it I didn't like how they made the mansion more like a 13 Ghosts
- 35:59House on Haunted Hill mixture a fan of
- 36:02Mmhmm
- 36:02it just He misses the point and he tries to reclaim it
- 36:07Kearns: the AI thing is so dumb
- 36:10Ryan: Yeah
- 36:10Jon: Mmhmm
- 36:11Kearns: dumb Yeah I'm so mad I stashed this John you're evil
- 36:17Jon: This might be the peak of, of this list too.
- 36:20Uh, movie number three is going to be the live action original Street Fighter
- 36:28Kearns: No you know what Actually for M Bison's performance I would stash this
- 36:33And uh you guys know the actor's name Ryan I'm sure you can spit it out Yeah
- 36:40Dying of cancer I believe at the time
- 36:42Jon: Yeah.
- 36:43Kearns: puts out
- 36:44Jon: Yeah.
- 36:45Kearns: performance this awful movie
- 36:49Jon: Yeah, in a movie that deserves none of it
- 36:53Kearns: And it's so so American to make Guile the main character but cast
- 36:57JeanClaude Van Damme as him be like Yeah we're no we're gonna We're not gonna Ryu
- 37:03and Ken are gonna be side characters in this We're really gonna go proAmerica It's
- 37:07gonna be Cammy and it's gonna be Guile Ugh
- 37:13Stupid movie
- 37:16Jon: Brian?
- 37:18Ryan: I yeah I don't wanna stash it but I have to stash it cause it's like this
- 37:22is like I feel like the punishment is us stashing these films this week It's like
- 37:28Jon: absolutely is.
- 37:30Ryan: them This is Like Raul Julia does a great M Bison I love him Um but they
- 37:37yeah they don't do any justice with this film Ri Ryu and Ken should've been
- 37:41the main characters But they do get my boy uh Vega correct with the mask the
- 37:48outfit They do get him correct And Balrog
- 37:54Jon: Ball rock.
- 37:56Ryan: Orac
- 37:57Kearns: The original Mike Tyson
- 38:00Ryan: the boxer
- 38:00Kearns: The real M Bison Did you uh w one of you guys sent that to us right
- 38:05How they ripped off M Bison completely or was that another friends group
- 38:10Jon: Might be another friend group
- 38:11Kearns: have to I have to share that with you It's They show he he's from
- 38:15a manga completely ripped off from another character they even stole all
- 38:20of his poses and stuff that you see in the like scripting of the first
- 38:23game Street Fighter II from the manga It's pretty egregious Pretty egregious
- 38:32Jon: Yeah, it's ready.
- 38:33Movie number four.
- 38:36Doom
- 38:38Kearns: I'm I have no problem stashing this one I enjoyed this movie
- 38:45Ryan: Nope slash
- 38:46Kearns: No I enjoyed this movie I did I've just I played Doom 3 like right
- 38:51before this came out too and that that might have helped a little bit
- 38:57Ryan: Doom 3 though like for at the time was so unique cause it kind of got
- 39:01into the psychological horror more than like blasting everything And it led to
- 39:07this film for more people wanting to see it but I don't think they The first
- 39:11person is cool but the story I can't No
- 39:17Jon: This is not The Rock's only appearance in this game tonight
- 39:21All right, movie number five.
- 39:24Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- 39:26Ryan: Stash Stash
- 39:28Kearns: this too I'll stash this too
- 39:32Ryan: my grandmother took me
- 39:34Kearns: Oh my God I was wondering where you were going with that
- 39:37Ryan: she
- 39:37Kearns: grandmother used to dress up as Lara Croft and
- 39:40Ryan: God no no She
- 39:42Jon: Grandma
- 39:43Kearns: no Meemaw
- 39:45Ryan: she took me to the theater and it was great cause it was in the summer
- 39:48There was no one in the theater of of course cause it's such a fantastic
- 39:52movie But seeing it in the big screen and then seeing it at home it it they
- 39:58they nailed it I think they nailed it
- 40:02Jon: Gam Gam, can you put your clothes on?
- 40:05Kearns: Camp camp How did you like uh the Vikander version of it Vikander as
- 40:10Jon: it.
- 40:10Kearns: Croft No
- 40:13Ryan: No
- 40:13Jon: see it.
- 40:14I checked out after this one.
- 40:15I, uh, this was enough
- 40:17Kearns: see
- 40:17Jon: Tomb Raider for me
- 40:18Kearns: it felt indulgent Like um I wasn't I didn't care that it was
- 40:22a Tomb Raider movie and I wasn't gonna go see it to be a horny weirdo
- 40:24So I was like all right hope she
- 40:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:28Yeah, they my, they got my horny weirdo money f- with this one.
- 40:31And, and like that's, that's all the horny weirdo money you get out of me
- 40:37Ryan: well the the new
- 40:38Kearns: For this franchise
- 40:40Ryan: the
- 40:41Jon: for this franchise
- 40:43Ryan: is more on the newer games where she's like trapped on an island and
- 40:46she goes through like this survival experience while the original timeline's
- 40:51more like I'm rich I'm an adventurer I can do all these things So there's
- 40:56Mmhmm
- 40:56different dynamics I feel with both This one's definitely the more
- 40:59the original like you do the mods and all that while the newer film
- 41:05is more on that survival aspect
- 41:09Jon: Okay.
- 41:10All right, next movie.
- 41:13Movie number six.
- 41:16The Rock is back with Rampage
- 41:19Kearns: am happy to slash this hot garbage This movie was tough to get through
- 41:27Cause he turns into one of them right I think that's the big thing at the
- 41:31end He like turns into one of them Yeah
- 41:35Jon: I think he does.
- 41:36I don't remember, like, almost any of this movie
- 41:40Kearns: It's really bad
- 41:42Jon: Brian
- 41:48Ryan: It's how do you like I'm gonna slash it because I couldn't wrap my head around
- 41:48how they would do this successfully um without it being like a Godzilla ripoff
- 41:53of course cause that's what the game is
- 41:55Jon: Well, yeah, the game…
- 41:57Ryan: Godzilla
- 41:58Jon: Yeah, and I loved this game.
- 42:00I, this game got so many quarters w- in the arcades.
- 42:04Kearns: It was fun
- 42:05Jon: and then it, it, it was on, it was on one of the early consoles.
- 42:10I don't remember which one, maybe Genesis
- 42:13Ryan: Yep
- 42:13Kearns: I think it had a Genesis before It had a Sega Nintendo too
- 42:17Ryan: Yep
- 42:18Kearns: It was on Super Nintendo
- 42:20Ryan: They had an N64 one which was 3D where you can roam and all that
- 42:24It wasn't the 2D And then I think they had one on PS2 and that was it
- 42:30Kearns: I mean
- 42:30Jon: This game needs to come back.
- 42:32Kearns: They
- 42:32Jon: It needs to come back
- 42:34Kearns: and stuff and iPad apps now where you just get to nuke the city and stuff so
- 42:38I don't know if Rampage will ever return
- 42:41Ryan: are
- 42:41Jon: No, we, we need Rampage back.
- 42:44We need Rampage back and we need Gauntlet back
- 42:47Kearns: Gauntlet
- 42:48Ryan: Gauntlet yes They are
- 42:50Kearns: Golden Axe
- 42:52Ryan: though
- 42:52Kearns: Golden Axe Speaking of games that ate my quarters
- 42:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:56Yep
- 42:56Ryan: out with a animated show on Netflix
- 42:59Kearns: Well we'll be griping about that in a future episode kids Sure of
- 43:04Jon: All right.
- 43:06We have two movies left, and here's where we stand.
- 43:09Kearns, you have one stash and one slash.
- 43:12Ryan, you're left stashing these last two movies.
- 43:16I hope they're what you were waiting for
- 43:18Ryan: Super Mario Brothers Super Mario Brothers
- 43:21Kearns: stash that
- 43:22Jon: Movie number seven, the first Silent Hill
- 43:26Kearns: I'm gonna stash it
- 43:27Ryan: it
- 43:27Kearns: gonna stash it
- 43:28Ryan: it
- 43:28Kearns: For the even just for the homage to Evil Dead the barbed wire tree root
- 43:33crossover we've all been waiting for I I think they nailed this movie to
- 43:38be honest with you I like Silent Hill
- 43:42Jon: Yeah.
- 43:43It, it's, it's better than it should be.
- 43:46It's be- better than any of the other Silent Hills they've
- 43:49attempted by a long shot.
- 43:51I,
- 43:52Kearns: Mmhmm
- 43:53Ryan: I
- 43:55Jon: I, probably should have subbed out the, the recent remake, but I
- 43:59don't think you guys have seen it
- 44:01Kearns: No
- 44:02Jon: And I would highly recommend that you keep it that way
- 44:05Kearns: It's got Sean Bean in it Come on guys
- 44:08Jon: I would highly recommend that you do not see the new one.
- 44:12Highly.
- 44:13Like, I don't generally tell people to not see something.
- 44:17Don't see the new Silent Hill.
- 44:19Kearns: I like when
- 44:20Jon: Don't do it to yourself
- 44:21Kearns: the girl's entire body and then throws it at the villagers
- 44:26Jon: Oh yeah, that, that triangle-headed guy is awesome in this one
- 44:31Kearns: Yeah he's great
- 44:31Ryan: Pyramid
- 44:32Kearns: Yeah that was I think he did that on purpose to trigger us
- 44:36Jon: I absolutely did.
- 44:37I did it that way the first time.
- 44:38In our last movie, I think you'll both be…
- 44:40Ryan: I'm
- 44:41Jon: Oh, I think I just, I think I just broke Kearns' world.
- 44:44I'm so sorry.
- 44:45I thought you s-
- 44:46Ryan: you had to slash it
- 44:47Kearns: Yeah
- 44:48Jon: And I thought you still had a slash, a stash
- 44:51Kearns: Dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee Uh this was good too because
- 44:54I my friend and his dad showed up at my house on like a Saturday at 1100 AM
- 44:59and like Hey you wanna come see Mortal Kombat And I was like Yeah I do And I
- 45:03Jon: Yeah
- 45:04Kearns: cause my mom wasn't home and I just left the house with them
- 45:07and she had no idea where I was for like five hours No regrets I used to
- 45:12run to the soundtrack of that movie
- 45:15Ryan: It's a good soundtrack
- 45:16Kearns: I'd burn CDs where I'd
- 45:17Jon: Mmhmm
- 45:18Kearns: like Rocky music and stuff But I always had the Mortal Kombat
- 45:21song on there for my runs Good times
- 45:25Ryan: I got good memories The one is my grandmother giving me this movie on VHS
- 45:30and introducing me to Mortal Kombat not knowing what it was She was like Oh it's
- 45:34just an action film And getting to know the characters and embracing more of the
- 45:41video game culture and stuff at that time
- 45:43Kearns: it's time to unleash Ryan on you his insane knowledge
- 45:48of all of the Raccoons I mean not Raccoon Resident Evil games
- 45:52Ryan: Man there's so many It's starts in 1996 we get the first Resident Evil
- 45:57game where we have to investigate Spencer Mansion You get to choose whether you're
- 46:03Jill with the uh the Bam Bam or Chris with the knife Um and you go through this
- 46:10whole experience of people turning on you Dobermans crashing through the window
- 46:15lightning trying to figure out where you're gonna put your items because you
- 46:20don't have enough room in your s inventory There we go And then you gotta go back
- 46:26and find everything and that was just the experience And then you you t you
- 46:31top it with two discs for Resident Evil 2 it's not one game it's two games Cause
- 46:37you get Leon's story first day as a cop and you get Claire's story trying to find
- 46:42Chris then it continues with the third one happening at the same time focusing
- 46:47on Jill and Nemesis and you can't exclude Mr X And it just continues on with Code
- 46:54Veronica the spinoff and Claire finding Chris on this island and explaining
- 47:00more of what the Tvirus and Umbrella's doing And then we get four where Leon
- 47:06just becomes this great action hero
- 47:09Kearns: We changed the camera angles for 4 changes up the whole game dynamics 4
- 47:134 was a new game mode for Resident Evil
- 47:19Ryan: More actionpacked and that's where they take it with five with You get back
- 47:23to Chris and it's like a new organization and then with six that's where they
- 47:28wanted to wrap it up with the three games
- 47:32Kearns: into the button mash game sequence stuff Just way too much It
- 47:36breaks immersion for me like crazy f um God of War does that too and I hate
- 47:40it I can't stand those cause it's just trying to get you to watch interactive
- 47:45cinematics and I'm not into that have been
- 47:49Ryan: work with Six I feel it lessens the gameplay God of War I feel it
- 47:53works when you're trying to like rip the wings off or you're in the middle
- 47:57of a boss fight with the Cyclops
- 47:59Kearns: Poseidon They did it with Poseidon the first fight and that
- 48:03Yeah I didn't like it I didn't like it
- 48:07Ryan: but that's why they returned to form for VII cause you get Well they go into a
- 48:12firstperson mode which I feel is a a lot creepier and it brings that thrill back
- 48:17Kearns: Seven is a great a great pivot for the franchise
- 48:23Ryan: And they change it they make it fresh Like it's very We mentioned this
- 48:28um in a couple episodes ago um how the family is compared to another film Oh God
- 48:37Kearns: Texas Chainsaw
- 48:39Ryan: No Was it was it X
- 48:44Where all the the family's infected and all that
- 48:49I said we were talking about it
- 48:50Kearns: Oh in the episode of Acts The the episode we recorded for Acts you mean
- 48:55Ryan: it was Exorcist It was something along those lines
- 48:57but how the family interacts
- 49:00Kearns: scene around the table We were talking about the scene
- 49:03around the table in uh what movie was it Oh my God now They were
- 49:08Jon: Oh, Evil Dead burn?
- 49:10Kearns: Evil Dead Burn Thank you It's so forgettable that film that I
- 49:13forgot the title Um yeah they ripped off the scene from Resident Evil 7
- 49:20Ryan: And it's that that creepiness and intensity and that claustrophobic I feel
- 49:24You play as Ethan you're going in the cellar And they carry that over into
- 49:28eight which I feel is an excellent game and it kinda brings it back to that fold
- 49:33of action and horror with a little spice of that universal classicness with the
- 49:39vampires and the werewolves and the sea creatures And then we get to Requiem
- 49:44which is like cause you get Leon who's the action pack and then you get this
- 49:50new character who's that survival horror But gonna turn on your heads because
- 49:56next year we're getting a remaster or remake of Code Veronica and I am very
- 50:01Kearns: I'm looking forward to that because that's that's not a spinoff um
- 50:04so much to me as it is a like a prequel
- 50:08Ryan: the
- 50:08Kearns: almost Yeah yeah that is that is the third game I agree Nemesis was
- 50:13sort of So when when Nemesis came out I was not thrilled because it felt like
- 50:18a reskin of Resident Evil 2 and it felt lazy and that's kinda what it was They
- 50:23built a story around that but that's what they did and I was like That's
- 50:27lame Easter eggs in this to all those games that Ryan mentioned Easter eggs
- 50:31What Easter eggs were in Raccoon City welcome to Raccoon City that you guys
- 50:35can think of off the top of your heads
- 50:37Ryan: let me start off I popped when you see the tractor trailer in the beginning
- 50:42cause that's how the second game starts
- 50:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:44Ryan: They do it to a T I mean they add the the creepy truck driver in there
- 50:48which I was like I don't think you need to add that But h him hitting the
- 50:53zombie uh the Doberman getting infected and that whole scenario setting it up
- 50:59Mmhmm
- 50:59the truck flips and crashes in front of the police station was exactly how it was
- 51:04in the game and I loved every minute of it
- 51:07Jon: Yeah, I wa- I was a fan of that.
- 51:09I don't mind the creepy truck driver.
- 51:11Someone has to be driving the truck, it might as well be a creepy guy
- 51:15Kearns: He wasn't so creepy He was like You're sleeping
- 51:17a lot blah blah blah He was
- 51:19Jon: Yeah.
- 51:20Kearns: like touching her and stuff
- 51:22Jon: Yeah.
- 51:22Ryan: he touches her
- 51:23Jon: You sure are pretty when you sleep
- 51:26Kearns: like that
- 51:27Ryan: Yeah
- 51:27Kearns: But I didn't ca I didn't catch the leg touch by the way
- 51:32let's see The typewriter typewriter
- 51:36Jon: Mmhmm
- 51:36You can
- 51:36Kearns: like
- 51:37Jon: see the typewriter in the diner.
- 51:38Kearns: ink ribbons at the right time
- 51:40Jon: Uh-huh.
- 51:41Kearns: Cause
- 51:41Jon: Oh, man
- 51:43Kearns: era of gaming when they had like mechanics that were super
- 51:45punishing and annoying that was one of them would Who blocks a game save
- 51:54Ryan: Do you remember with safe rooms where they weren't safe
- 51:59Kearns: There uh there aren't many
- 52:01Ryan: the Mr X one
- 52:02Kearns: yeah there aren't many where you go into a safe room and it wasn't
- 52:05safe That was like that's like the mimics in Dark Souls That's just an F
- 52:10Jon: Mmhmm Mmhmm
- 52:11Kearns: funny like oh yeah There was one game where if you hit the start
- 52:14menu it still killed you Uh I forget what game that was Pretty funny Pretty
- 52:22funny stuff there So the typewriter that was in the diner scene in the
- 52:27Jon: Mmhmm
- 52:28Yeah.
- 52:28You also in the diner get Jill talking about getting eaten by sharks and
- 52:33snakes, which is direct game reference
- 52:37Kearns: They could have I mean what about plants Like do you guys remember the big
- 52:41plant you have to do that big plant puzzle
- 52:44Ryan: I hate that
- 52:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:45Kearns: Yeah that that is a It's like a full stopping moment towards
- 52:48you know you're getting close to the end of the game and it slows
- 52:51you down so much You just wanna get through that whole scene The
- 52:54Jon: Mmhmm
- 52:55Kearns: there and you're like Ah
- 52:56Jon: Yeah.
- 52:57Yeah.
- 52:58Kearns: scene Moonlight Sonata obviously I still kn only know the title of
- 53:01that song because of Resident Evil
- 53:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:05when Claire is in Chris' house alone and the neighbors come over
- 53:10as they're turning into zombies, she writes "itchy tasty" on the door
- 53:15Kearns: Yep
- 53:15Jon: blood
- 53:16Kearns: big homage to the note that you find w
- 53:20Jon: Mmhmm
- 53:20Kearns: it's a scientist who's turning while he's writing in his
- 53:22journal and then it just evolves into itchy tasty itchy tasty which
- 53:27Jon: Mmhmm
- 53:27Kearns: there's been so many funny memes about that part of Resident Evil where
- 53:31they're like Yeah we're gonna crossbreed a gorilla with like an a and something
- 53:35a monster and we're gonna poke it with a stick for like six days And then like
- 53:40the next installment's like It got out
- 53:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:47Kearns: It's just good stuff right there I love it And that's pretty much
- 53:50what all those notes devolved into
- 53:52Jon: Yeah.
- 53:53Ryan: Yeah
- 53:55Kearns: The keys Keys Nothing more
- 53:57Jon: He's…
- 53:59Ryan: I
- 53:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:00Ryan: Jada was questioning me She's like Why are you so excited for four set
- 54:03of keys I go You don't understand much of a bitch it is to get all those keys
- 54:08Kearns: Yep
- 54:08Ryan: and to do what you have to do And it's sometimes it's a side
- 54:13mission where you're you get something extra you get more inventory or
- 54:17something special or it's just to continue with the game and it can
- 54:21Mmhmm
- 54:21hours
- 54:23Jon: Yep.
- 54:23Ryan: run out of bullets or
- 54:25Jon: Yeah.
- 54:25Ryan: man I have to run back to another
- 54:27Mmhmm
- 54:28to get that special thing
- 54:30Kearns: Mmhmm
- 54:31Jon: I don't remember how to do this puzzle.
- 54:33Like, I'm gonna do a, a kids don't know the struggle right here.
- 54:38You guys can look it all up on the internet.
- 54:41You can go on YouTube and watch somebody do it and then replicate what they did.
- 54:47The best we had was a Prima game guide.
- 54:50Kearns: Yep and you had to go out and
- 54:52Jon: And
- 54:53Ryan: Yep
- 54:53Jon: yeah, and eventually you got the, enough of from the internet
- 54:58to be able to, to write down cheat codes and stuff in a notebook.
- 55:04Kearns: I
- 55:05Jon: what you had
- 55:05Kearns: I mapped out like Metroid in a on a piece of looseleaf like crazy
- 55:09and then it got thrown away and I remember just being destroyed by that
- 55:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:13Kearns: I
- 55:14Jon: I had the I had the
- 55:16GTA cheat codes on like pages of notebooks, like just all over the place.
- 55:21Like, "Ah, I need, I need, I need unlimited health. Like
- 55:25where ha- where is that one?"
- 55:27Ryan: I wonder if I have all the cheats I had I had the GTA ones I had the
- 55:31Super Star Wars ones Put that in which that helped a lot A lot of the Super
- 55:38Nintendo games I had all the cheat codes cause like you'd go to Barnes
- 55:42Noble or um Borders and I'd have a little notebook and copy the code down
- 55:48Kearns: Mmhmm
- 55:48Ryan: have to buy the magazine
- 55:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:51Ryan: Ah
- 55:52Kearns: Those were good ones Those were good ones Rocket launcher obviously
- 55:56Ryan: Oh yeah I
- 55:58Jon: Ja ja.
- 55:59Ja, vi er i
- 56:00Kearns: in but fan servicey enough to get a pass
- 56:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:04I mean, you can't, you can't do it without the rocket launcher though.
- 56:08Like, it has to show up
- 56:10Kearns: The best part is there's nothing left of him after after that
- 56:14And they're all fine They were all like within eight feet of it Nope
- 56:17they're fine There's nothing left of the giant monster Like they did nothing
- 56:22Yeah Uh there's usually at least remnants There's just nothing there
- 56:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:32Kearns: not pass on stuff like that
- 56:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:36Ryan: Were you happy about the liquor Because the liquor was awesome in
- 56:40the movie They did a really good job
- 56:41Kearns: It was a fun scene where he gets
- 56:44Jon: Mmhmm Mmhmm
- 56:47Kearns: is annoying but
- 56:49Jon: Yeah
- 56:50Kearns: that's fine I suppose
- 56:52Ryan: go for the brain That's the rule
- 56:55Kearns: She like broke its neck
- 56:58Ryan: Yeah which I you can't because they're too strong They
- 57:03Jon: No, no, Mm-hmm
- 57:03Ryan: in the
- 57:04Kearns: Little gimpy orphanage ghost just came up behind it put in a rear
- 57:08naked choke and took it out Um what about the Resident Evil 2 remake Easter egg
- 57:17Ryan: Are
- 57:17Jon: I mean it
- 57:18Ryan: the
- 57:21I was gonna say the bobblehead You talking
- 57:23Uhhuh
- 57:24bobblehead Yep
- 57:25Kearns: What about missed opportunities in this movie And there's a bunch
- 57:28so let's it to like the top ones
- 57:32Ryan: Who was Mr X
- 57:33Kearns: That's the biggest missed opportunity in the film
- 57:36Jon: Hmm.
- 57:36Mm-hmm.
- 57:39Ryan: Like Birkin's okay like but Mr X is the main villain of two
- 57:45Kearns: Well I also get that this is it's a mashup of one and two
- 57:49Jon: Yeah
- 57:50Kearns: And they don't go for the tyrant they don't have the hunters skip out
- 57:56on uh I mean what about the herbs We couldn't have had an a little bit of a
- 58:01nod to the green and red herbs in some
- 58:04Jon: Mmhmm
- 58:05Kearns: Like somebody eat a salad or something Do something where
- 58:07we see the green and red I that's the most iconic part of Resident
- 58:10Evil mixing the herbs and stuff
- 58:13Ryan: The red and the green and was it yellow And then you get the super
- 58:18Kearns: Yellow is for um poison
- 58:21Ryan: Yep Yellow is poison
- 58:23Kearns: and green were uh full health and then three greens were full health
- 58:28Ryan: Yep I've mixed two reds and a green gone some crazy with that
- 58:33Kearns: I don't know if I didn't know that was a thing
- 58:36Jon: Yeah.
- 58:37Kearns: I didn't
- 58:37Jon: You can pretty much mix them up however you want to
- 58:40Ryan: Yeah
- 58:41Kearns: Interesting
- 58:42Jon: herbs.
- 58:43Kearns: Make cherubs
- 58:44Jon: Mixture herbs.
- 58:46Kearns: that was my biggest one was Mr X missing was so dumb I
- 58:49Jon: Yeah
- 58:49Kearns: I'm The hunters how do you skip the hunters They're the
- 58:53most iconic secondstage enemy
- 58:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:56Mm-hmm
- 58:57Kearns: just can't do that to us
- 59:00Ryan: You were lucky you got the Doberman I mean there wasn't like a whole army
- 59:04of them like I was expecting but you
- 59:06Mmhmm
- 59:07dot And I was like
- 59:08Jon: Yeah
- 59:09Ryan: But I do agree like the hunters are very important in the story that
- 59:15they should have included them at least a
- 59:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:18Well, I mean, really the last third to maybe even as far as the last
- 59:24half of this movie, it's just really the human enemy, uh, time, and,
- 59:32you know, whatever Birkin and Wesker are turning into.
- 59:37Like,
- 59:37that's
- 59:37it
- 59:39Kearns: Wesker's interesting cause he runs the In order to explain the fact that
- 59:43Wesker is the way he is they also had to dig deeper into the lore of well how many
- 59:48people in Raccoon City got the Tvirus the answer was everyone including Leon
- 59:54Jon: Mmhmm
- 59:54Kearns: Claire and Jill some people that have the ability to live with it
- 1:00:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:01Kearns: And I was like all right they're reaching a little
- 1:00:03bit here with the lore make
- 1:00:06Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:00:06Kearns: sense because it was
- 1:00:08Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:09Kearns: and it w uh
- 1:00:09Jon: Yeah
- 1:00:10Kearns: too maybe
- 1:00:11Ryan: Yep
- 1:00:12Kearns: So
- 1:00:13Ryan: a fan of that cause like none of them in the game have the virus The only
- 1:00:18time one of them does is Jill in Resident Evil 5 and that's under Wesker's control
- 1:00:25till they eventually cure her But the only one who should have any remnant
- 1:00:29in it is just Wesker alone because of him like testing everything on himself
- 1:00:35and becoming this superhuman eventually
- 1:00:38Kearns: should have kept it zombie outbreak Wesker got his this way
- 1:00:43Ryan: Mmhmm
- 1:00:43Kearns: was administered They shouldn't have made it so it
- 1:00:45could spread communally like that
- 1:00:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:52Mmhmm
- 1:00:52Kearns: well how animals got it and things like that but you can suspend your
- 1:00:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:56Yeah.
- 1:00:57Kearns: assume this and
- 1:00:59Jon: Well, I think a lot of that is, could be due to the time
- 1:01:05period this movie comes out in.
- 1:01:08You know, the, that you're playing on COVID fears too.
- 1:01:13So, you know, you
- 1:01:14Ryan: make you
- 1:01:15Jon: make
- 1:01:15a virus airborne, may- maybe that becomes a little scarier for this
- 1:01:20audience, and, uh, it doesn't
- 1:01:23Kearns: Yeah not
- 1:01:24Jon: Resident Evil doesn't need that addition
- 1:01:27Ryan: no
- 1:01:28Kearns: as far as like missed opportunities go that's kinda it sort
- 1:01:32of cherrypicks what it wants to put in from those two games Does a passable
- 1:01:37job and good job in some cases and it's
- 1:01:40Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:01:41Kearns: watch It's way better than the other franchise as John pointed out Um
- 1:01:46what about the ending though Ooh there's some stuff to discuss with the ending
- 1:01:53Ryan: It's a nice nod to the second when they're escaping uh Leon and Claire
- 1:01:58and the little girl I'm skipping on her name when they're escaping at the end
- 1:02:02that secret ending and they fight the snakelike creature They just changed it
- 1:02:07to for to Birkin which like the actor he does a great job of playing him
- 1:02:13Jon: Neil McDonough.
- 1:02:15Ryan: yep Neal McDonough He's a I've only seen him a lot in TV
- 1:02:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:20Ryan: does a great job Uh the one thing that doesn't get me is his transformation
- 1:02:25cause Birk Yeah I mean when you play the game and you see Like they follow
- 1:02:29the same story but as he evolves he just becomes like this gigant gigantic eye with
- 1:02:35tentacles eyes everywhere and it's more of
- 1:02:37Mmhmm
- 1:02:38feeling When you see him you're disturbed because like he was the one who created
- 1:02:43the virus This is his baby and like he's like the allseeing eye to me in my
- 1:02:48opinion to the whole Umbrella Corporation That was like the message And in
- 1:02:53Mmhmm
- 1:02:53they make him look like Grim Cutty and I was I wasn't a fan I wasn't a fan of that
- 1:02:59Jon: Uh-huh.
- 1:03:01Yeah, I, I get that.
- 1:03:02I think, you know, maybe, maybe that's where you start to run into some budgetary
- 1:03:07limitations that, you know, you have to… A- and time, I mean, like, you
- 1:03:13know, it's an hour and 47 minutes already.
- 1:03:17There's cuts that have to be made somewhere.
- 1:03:20I, I mean, you know, may- maybe the Resident Evil games are
- 1:03:24best adapted as a TV series.
- 1:03:26The end feels kind of rushed to me the way it is.
- 1:03:29But that's what it is.
- 1:03:30this may be the best you get out of a Resident Evil movie.
- 1:03:34Kearns: Yeah
- 1:03:34Jon: I hope not.
- 1:03:35You know, I'm, I'm, I am, I am still excited about the Zack Snyder
- 1:03:41version that is gonna come out right about the time you're hearing this
- 1:03:46Ryan: Yeah I am too I sent you guys something
- 1:03:49Kearns: I am not
- 1:03:51Ryan: Are are you one of the people who's like yelling at him
- 1:03:54because it's not Resident Evil
- 1:03:56Kearns: Yeah
- 1:03:57Ryan: Well he he's trying to do something different He's putting s his unique
- 1:04:01twist inside the game universe and
- 1:04:04Kearns: Some of the stuff I saw in the trailer just isn't Resident
- 1:04:07Evily though It was Evil Deady and
- 1:04:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:12Kearns: I d I you don't need to do that If you wanna make an Evil Dead movie you
- 1:04:16should've made Evil Dead Burn and made it good Don't do this So I don't like that
- 1:04:22like what I saw I hope I'm gonna watch it
- 1:04:24Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:04:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:27Kearns: Let's hope
- 1:04:28Jon: mean, I, yeah, I'm holding out some hope for it 'cause Zach
- 1:04:32Cregger hasn't missed for me.
- 1:04:35So, you know, he's a, a director as talented as I feel that
- 1:04:40he is gives me some hope.
- 1:04:44He'll be the best director attached to, to make a Resident Evil movie
- 1:04:49Kearns: That's true
- 1:04:50Ryan: True
- 1:04:50Kearns: What we
- 1:04:51Jon: And some
- 1:04:52Kearns: a similar thing for the Dawn of Dead um Dawn of the Dead remake
- 1:04:56is that it's a good movie that's not Resident Evil probably what's
- 1:05:01going to happen That's my t my
- 1:05:03Jon: Yeah, probably.
- 1:05:05Ryan: Yeah
- 1:05:05Jon: Probably
- 1:05:06Kearns: But we'll see But all
- 1:05:08Jon: And I, I, I, I know I mentioned Resident Evil as a TV series, and I
- 1:05:13know they did a TV series on Netflix, but it wasn't really, even that's
- 1:05:18not really a Resident Evil story.
- 1:05:21Kearns: Right
- 1:05:22Ryan: No
- 1:05:23Jon: It's, you know, it's the… Yeah.
- 1:05:25They took a lot of liberties with the story there too,
- 1:05:28but, you know, it was fine.
- 1:05:32Kearns: It was
- 1:05:32Jon: I didn't hate it.
- 1:05:34I didn't hate it.
- 1:05:35Kearns: So how'd you
- 1:05:35Jon: I watched all of it
- 1:05:37Kearns: How'd you like the end and the midcredit scene the this movie
- 1:05:43Ryan: I love the midcredit scene more than the ending cause you get Ada Wong and you
- 1:05:46get that Wesker transformation He gets his sunglasses You know it kind of gives
- 1:05:51the explanation of why Like cause in the game everything he puts into him he's
- 1:05:55like very sensitive to the light So they do tie that in and I feel it was gonna
- 1:06:00lead to a I said badass Wesker with Ada Wong and it was gonna lead into Resident
- 1:06:06Evil 5 at least that storyline And maybe go with a little Code Veronica into it
- 1:06:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:13Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:17Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:17Kearns: mean I'm I'm okay with them not continuing on with this anyway This was uh
- 1:06:21better for me as a oneoff If they'd made
- 1:06:24Jon: Yeah
- 1:06:24Kearns: movies and it got worse This didn't have any room to go
- 1:06:27down in my opinion It was it was suspended just above bad So if it got
- 1:06:35Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:06:35Kearns: quality of the second one went down ugh They also they removed
- 1:06:40the nuke and turned it into the mansion bomb and just focused on the
- 1:06:44Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:06:46and
- 1:06:46Kearns: I
- 1:06:46Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:47Kearns: kinda lame Like yeah at least give us a
- 1:06:48Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:50Yeah
- 1:06:51Ryan: I thought they teased it a little bit and then they just forgot about it
- 1:06:56Cause I think they mentioned the idea of it which is the the bomb in the uh
- 1:07:01Spencer mansion but they do mention a nuke getting delivered and I was like
- 1:07:04Okay gonna keep it close and no they don't
- 1:07:09Kearns: Nothing Gave us nothing
- 1:07:11Jon: Yep.
- 1:07:12Kearns: Yeah Are we doing reviews for this one John
- 1:07:15Jon: Well, of course we are.
- 1:07:16I have a, I actually have four 'cause I l- I love the re- the set
- 1:07:22of reviews that are, that it's on Rotten Tomatoes for this movie.
- 1:07:26They are so unhinged.
- 1:07:28They're, it's so out there.
- 1:07:31we'll start with the overall scores.
- 1:07:33This i- Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is a 30% critic score
- 1:07:39Kearns: Oh that seems accurate It seems
- 1:07:42Jon: It's a 60- it's a 65% audience score though, so you know, the fans, some fans
- 1:07:50found some to like, as this person did.
- 1:07:53This is a five-star review that will leave you a little confused.
- 1:07:58"First of all, musical effects are insane.
- 1:08:01Genre itself is not bad, but not for Leon, there's a big mistake.
- 1:08:07Leon S. Kennedy is chestnut hair cop in video games and most popular game
- 1:08:14character in RE, That is the most bizarre five-star review I have ever heard.
- 1:08:19Uh, clearly it's not an English as a first language person, but I mean,
- 1:08:26forgetting that, there's nothing… He's not, that's not a five-star movie
- 1:08:30if you hate that character that much
- 1:08:34Kearns: Yeah
- 1:08:35Ryan: a three star
- 1:08:36Kearns: fact
- 1:08:37Jon: yeah, that
- 1:08:38Kearns: brings up like why did you hate him so much Really why did you hate him
- 1:08:43Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:08:44Kearns: And we talked about that a little bit Switching
- 1:08:46Jon: Yeah.
- 1:08:48Kearns: Anytime they do it with a character that's
- 1:08:50beloved too it's a risky move
- 1:08:53Jon: It always
- 1:08:54Kearns: this review a little bit
- 1:08:56Jon: That always angers people.
- 1:08:58I mean, my issue, like I, like we said, it's not the race
- 1:09:02change, it's the ineptitude.
- 1:09:07Um, so with the scores of this movie, you know I found some ones and some halves.
- 1:09:15Here's a one star
- 1:09:18One star.
- 1:09:19This is the worst Resident Evil movies I've ever seen.
- 1:09:24They don't study your time with it
- 1:09:27Kearns: Wow
- 1:09:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:30Ryan: Maybe
- 1:09:31Jon: So
- 1:09:32Ryan: it's a one
- 1:09:32Jon: yeah, uh, Leon's a problem clearly.
- 1:09:36I, I also wanna point out, I'm having difficulty reading some
- 1:09:39of these because there is no punctuation in any of these reviews.
- 1:09:45None.
- 1:09:46N-
- 1:09:46Kearns: way
- 1:09:46Jon: not a comma, not a period, nothing
- 1:09:51Kearns: Stream of consciousness hate.
- 1:09:53Jon: Nothing.
- 1:09:54Do you… Yeah.
- 1:09:57Um, I think these get worse.
- 1:10:00Here's a half star
- 1:10:03Half star.
- 1:10:03Are we dead ass?
- 1:10:04This is the worst film ever.
- 1:10:04I hope they don't make a number two, 'cause this sucked ass.
- 1:10:04The characters didn't look like the ones from the game except for
- 1:10:04Chris and Claire, and the story is
- 1:10:18even worse.
- 1:10:20It was like if number one and two had a baby and then shatted on it.
- 1:10:25Even my cousin could make a better movie than this, and she's 10.
- 1:10:31Three thumbs down.
- 1:10:32They also made Leon useless ash and like a hobo
- 1:10:37Kearns: Oh my God.
- 1:10:38But like a hobo is definitely something I agree with.
- 1:10:40I actually like the spirit of that review though, 'cause it hits on
- 1:10:43everything I don't like about the movie.
- 1:10:46I just might
- 1:10:46Jon: Yeah
- 1:10:46Yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:47Kearns: as he doesn't like it though
- 1:10:49Jon: Again, no punctuation and the thumbs down are emoji thumbs downs
- 1:10:57Kearns: Yep
- 1:10:59Jon: Yeah.
- 1:10:59and one more half star.
- 1:11:02"I saw this on Hulu thinking, oh, a different take on Resident Evil, one
- 1:11:08of my favorite all-time game series. I only made it about 10 minutes into
- 1:11:13the movie before I gave up. I know it's hard to keep a movie to a video game
- 1:11:19and vice versa like it is with a book adaptation, but what is this crap?"
- 1:11:25And now we're gonna go into the grievances.
- 1:11:28"One, Wesker works for Umbrella, not RPD.
- 1:11:31Two, Jill isn't friends with any of them.
- 1:11:35Three, Leon Kennedy doesn't meet Wesker so early.
- 1:11:39Four, Leon meets Claire Redfield before meeting anyone of the RPD staff.
- 1:11:45Five, starts at a gas station, not a diner.
- 1:11:49Six, Wesker is a scientist, not a cop.
- 1:11:52Seven, Claire Redfield doesn't meet her brother at all.
- 1:11:56There is so much more wrong just in those first 10 minutes that I couldn't watch it.
- 1:12:02I would never recommend this movie to anyone, not even my enemies.
- 1:12:07It doesn't have to be exactly the same, but this was completely far from the
- 1:12:12storyline that it doesn't make sense.
- 1:12:15Please don't watch this.
- 1:12:17I'd give it zero stars if possible."
- 1:12:23Kearns: Speaking of stars, Ryan, I feel,
- 1:12:26Jon: This
- 1:12:26Kearns: you're gonna point something out about Wesker
- 1:12:29Ryan: He he's undercover He he was a part of the squad He was undercover
- 1:12:34working with them So yes he was part of the STARS team as an undercover agent
- 1:12:39for Umbrella Mr I Know Resident Evil
- 1:12:43Kearns: would make him an, which would make him a cop, by the way.
- 1:12:46It'd be like saying a SWAT team member isn't a cop.
- 1:12:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:50Kearns: Special STARS group.
- 1:12:51He is definitely a cop in the game
- 1:12:53Jon: It's,
- 1:12:54Ryan: Yes
- 1:12:54Jon: I lo- I love that review.
- 1:12:56He got so angry in 10 minutes
- 1:12:59Kearns: Yep.
- 1:13:01angry.
- 1:13:01Ryan: Yeah
- 1:13:03Jon: So angry in 10 minutes.
- 1:13:04Kearns: get some of it, but whatever.
- 1:13:06All right, Ryan, why don't you
- 1:13:07Jon: I mean
- 1:13:07Kearns: review?
- 1:13:09Jon: Yeah,
- 1:13:10Ryan: I'm, I'm in between.
- 1:13:12I'm giving it a three out of five, and the reason I'm giving it a three
- 1:13:16out of five is, does it hit some strides that I was looking forward
- 1:13:19to, being a Resident Evil fan?
- 1:13:21Yes.
- 1:13:22Is it the truest form for right now we're gonna get of an adaptation
- 1:13:26of the game that's true to it?
- 1:13:28Yes, and I respect it.
- 1:13:31Do they nail it fully?
- 1:13:33really.
- 1:13:35But is it a good watch if you're just chilling on, like, a Saturday
- 1:13:39afternoon with nothing to do?
- 1:13:40Yeah.
- 1:13:42So I'll give it three out of five on it.
- 1:13:44Be generous.
- 1:13:46'Cause it's also one of the best Resident Evil films I've seen.
- 1:13:51Until
- 1:13:51Kearns: Which give you an idea of what I would've given those
- 1:13:53movies after you hear my big fat
- 1:13:55Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:13:58Kearns: Um, without Resident Evil, this movie is terrible.
- 1:14:01So just the, like, the nostalgia factor and stuff props it up a bit more.
- 1:14:06It's
- 1:14:06Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:14:06Kearns: much, so much missed potential, and it's just, it's just… talked
- 1:14:12about it, all of it, so I don't need to rehash any of it here, but it
- 1:14:15really is not that f- good of a film.
- 1:14:18Like, it's enjoyable though if you're a
- 1:14:21Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:14:22Kearns: of the franchise
- 1:14:26Two
- 1:14:27Jon: I think that's pretty fair, and I'm gonna wind up almost
- 1:14:31right in the middle of you guys.
- 1:14:32I'm gonna go with 2.75.
- 1:14:35I think it's fun.
- 1:14:36I think there's fun to be had.
- 1:14:38G- I could be talked up to three.
- 1:14:40I could be talked down to 2.5.
- 1:14:42Like, it, it f- it does some things well enough, and, and, you know, like
- 1:14:48we've mentioned multiple times, I…
- 1:14:50This is the best, the most faithful Resident Evil we're gonna get probably.
- 1:14:55I'm not sure this franchise can be made into a movie.
- 1:14:59I'm not sure we should continue to try to make it into movies.
- 1:15:03You know, maybe it's time for an Amazon or somebody to get involved and make a sh-
- 1:15:08a series out of it, and, you know, see.
- 1:15:11But, you know, at the end of the day, even that probably doesn't work.
- 1:15:15I, you know, it may just be an unfilmable property.
- 1:15:20And, you know, this is where we are with it.
- 1:15:23You know, it's, uh, if Zach Craiger doesn't hit, in a few years someone
- 1:15:27else will take a stab at it again, and it'll probably come out about the same.
- 1:15:33And that's where we are.
- 1:15:34So 2.75
- 1:15:36Kearns: All right, so that's the end of our discussion of the movie, but
- 1:15:39now it's time for our top fives, kids.
- 1:15:42Ryan: Oh, I've been waiting for
- 1:15:43Kearns: I bet you have-
- 1:15:44Ryan: going top five Resident Evil games, and I'm
- 1:15:47Kearns: Ooh.
- 1:15:49Ryan: I'm giving an honorary mention to one of the most hated
- 1:15:51Resident Evil games out there, and that's Resident Evil Zero, which
- 1:15:55originally came out for the GameCube.
- 1:15:57It's the first prequel.
- 1:15:58it's different characters.
- 1:16:00We get a prisoner, and we get one of the S.T.A.R.S. team, and
- 1:16:04they're just stuck on this train, and it's a different atmosphere.
- 1:16:08Much harder because you couldn't walk past the zombies.
- 1:16:12There wasn't enough storage, uh, not enough inventory.
- 1:16:16But honorary mention.
- 1:16:18Not a lot of people love it.
- 1:16:19But we're gonna start off with my number five.
- 1:16:21We mentioned it earlier.
- 1:16:22We're going to 2000 when anyone… everyone had a PS2 and a Dreamcast, and
- 1:16:27that's Resident Evil Code: Veronica.
- 1:16:29Um, set three months after the events of Resident Evil 2 and during the
- 1:16:35concurrent, uh, destruction of Raccoon City as seen in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
- 1:16:39It follows Claire Redfield and her brother Chris in their effort to
- 1:16:42survive a viral outbreak at a remote prison island in the Southern Ocean
- 1:16:46and a research facility in Antarctica.
- 1:16:49an excellent game.
- 1:16:50I'm not gonna spoil anything.
- 1:16:52I'm just gonna give synopsises because I feel like everyone, whether you've
- 1:16:56played it or are interested in Resident Evil, should experience it yourself.
- 1:17:00So yes, I will be, uh, spoiler-free.
- 1:17:03But it… This is one of the hardest games because it's still in the
- 1:17:08tank controls, and the cameras are very close-ended, just to say.
- 1:17:12Yeah, this game is very hard to play even for modern consoles
- 1:17:17Jon: Did you say in the taint controls?
- 1:17:21Oh
- 1:17:21Ryan: tank controls.
- 1:17:22Tank, um, that's what they call the Resident Evil tank, the tank
- 1:17:25controls, because it's all based on the camera angles and the closeness,
- 1:17:30and it's basically like the original.
- 1:17:34Um, you gotta get ribbons, make sure you know where your, uh, storage facilities
- 1:17:39are, and have enough inventory.
- 1:17:42then we kinda jump backwards to 1996, which is my number four, and
- 1:17:48that's the original Resident Evil.
- 1:17:50I never had the pleasure of playing the original Resident Evil, but I played
- 1:17:53the remake in 2002, which is basically the same game with upgraded graphics.
- 1:17:59Always go with Jill first.
- 1:18:00Um, the whole idea is set in the fictional Arklay Mountain region in the Midwest.
- 1:18:06Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, members of the elite task force S- S.T.A.R.S.,
- 1:18:09must escape the Spencer mansion infested with zombies and other monsters.
- 1:18:14It's excellent for the survival horror.
- 1:18:17It really gets the survival horror going, 'cause then we get Silent
- 1:18:20Hill, we get Siren, Fatal Frame, we get all of these classics.
- 1:18:25But is what made it.
- 1:18:27And the cool thing is, couple years later, you get a director's cut of it,
- 1:18:33which features a lot of the scenes from Japan, where it's known as Biohazard.
- 1:18:38So it kinda gives the American culture more of that horror experience of survival
- 1:18:43horror from the Japanese culture, which is cool, and it still is used to this day.
- 1:18:49which, we'll jump to number three, and number three is,
- 1:18:54recent 2021 Resident Evil Village.
- 1:18:57I really love that game.
- 1:18:59It's a sequel to VII.
- 1:19:00It follows Ethan Winters who searches for his kidnapped daughter in a mysterious
- 1:19:04European village, of course, filled with mutant creatures, which also hold
- 1:19:08secrets around the Umbrella Corporation.
- 1:19:11It's in first person as well as third person.
- 1:19:13Play it in first person if you want the thrill, if you wanna be scared.
- 1:19:18It's a fun experience, and there's a lot of homages, too, to the
- 1:19:22Universal horror films, which I loved.
- 1:19:24And it's a very easy play through.
- 1:19:27it's very enjoyable, and it's a good first outing if you wanna get into Resident
- 1:19:32Evil, I feel, you wanna jump around.
- 1:19:36that leads to number two, though.
- 1:19:38two, we had a remake in 2023, but the 2005 still slaps, and that's Resident Evil 4.
- 1:19:44We follow Leon, who's a badass in the game, on a mission to rescue
- 1:19:48the President of the United States' daughter, Ashley Graham, who has been
- 1:19:51abducted by a religious cult in Spain.
- 1:19:54get so many great scenes in this.
- 1:19:57You get the merchant, you get the little Napoleon guy, you get a
- 1:20:01Rasputin guy who turns into a spider.
- 1:20:04You get so many great Experiences in this game.
- 1:20:09definitely play, I would say play the remake 'cause you
- 1:20:11don't have the tank controls.
- 1:20:14with the modern controls it's a little bit better, and it follows the same story.
- 1:20:18And
- 1:20:18Jon: That's neat
- 1:20:20Ryan: to number one to number one.
- 1:20:23my number one, both 1998 with the two-disc and 2019 with the
- 1:20:30remake, and that's Resident Evil 2.
- 1:20:32It's my favorite Resident Evil game because it puts you in
- 1:20:36every, I feel, zombie fan's dream.
- 1:20:39You're in the middle of a city, and you're trying to survive, and
- 1:20:43you get two character aspects.
- 1:20:45You have Mr. X haunting you.
- 1:20:47Nowhere's safe.
- 1:20:48And you get a couple good side stories which expand the universe even
- 1:20:54more, and just a great experience.
- 1:20:57I… Resident Evil 2.
- 1:21:00Go play these games.
- 1:21:01Enjoy them.
- 1:21:02Have fun.
- 1:21:04Kearns: Good.
- 1:21:04Ryan: John, okay
- 1:21:06Kearns: No, I was gonna say it's a good top five.
- 1:21:08Very topical
- 1:21:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:10Ryan: Yes.
- 1:21:11Yes.
- 1:21:11Uh, and you know what?
- 1:21:13In your comments, let us know what your top five Resident Evil games
- 1:21:16are, or top five horror games are
- 1:21:19Jon: Or top five games, or top five movies, or top five…
- 1:21:23Give us your top fives.
- 1:21:25I went pretty straightforward here.
- 1:21:27I went with, um, virus movies
- 1:21:32Ryan: Oh, okay
- 1:21:33Jon: Yeah.
- 1:21:34Or virus-like movies.
- 1:21:36Some of these are bacterial, some of them are infections.
- 1:21:40It's, it's a, a mix.
- 1:21:42Illness movies.
- 1:21:43We'll g- we'll straighten it up to m- illness movies
- 1:21:46Kearns: Can we, do virus movies where Gwyneth dies?
- 1:21:50Uh, unalives.
- 1:21:51Can we do just those?
- 1:21:54Jon: number five, Contagion.
- 1:21:56Num-
- 1:21:56Kearns: five, there it is.
- 1:21:57I knew it was
- 1:21:57Jon: number four, number four, Contagion.
- 1:22:00Number three, Contagion.
- 1:22:02Number two, Contagion.
- 1:22:04And number one virus movie where Gwyneth Paltrow dies, Contagion.
- 1:22:10Kearns: Nice.
- 1:22:11My favorite top five
- 1:22:12Ryan: Best unaliving seen since Seven
- 1:22:15Jon: All right, here, here's the actual top five.
- 1:22:18At number five, I'm gonna go with a movie with a cast that includes
- 1:22:22Sam Waterston, Kathleen Quinlan, Yaphet Kotto, and Jeffrey DeMunn,
- 1:22:28and it's a movie called Warning Sign.
- 1:22:31so an accident in a biotech facility causes a bacterial leak, and the lab is
- 1:22:36locked down, trapping the staff inside.
- 1:22:40The trapped staff and their families outside are desperate for
- 1:22:44their release, but the military is determined to prevent that and
- 1:22:48prevent the spread of this illness.
- 1:22:50a security guard, a cop, and a drunk scientist team up to try to find
- 1:22:55a solution before time runs out.
- 1:22:59Warning Sign is a fun ride, my number four is also a fun ride, and it's the
- 1:23:05rare appearance of an Italian movie on my top five, and it is, Nightmare City
- 1:23:14So when a military aircraft full of infected people lands in a European
- 1:23:20city, a reporter on scene to interview a scientist witnesses the zombie
- 1:23:26passengers escape and attack soldiers in decidedly un-zombie-like manners.
- 1:23:33These undead use weapons.
- 1:23:36He attempts to inform the public, but is thwarted by the military, and before
- 1:23:42long, the zombies have overrun the city.
- 1:23:45It is Umberto Lenzi cl- a classic
- 1:23:51Ryan: It sounds very similar to Planet Terror in a way
- 1:23:56Jon: Yeah, I would say it's got some similarities.
- 1:23:58And I mean, you know that that whole grindhouse concept, as with anything
- 1:24:04Tarantino is involved in, has a lot of homages to other stuff, so
- 1:24:09Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 1:24:09It, it just, it's crazy.
- 1:24:12And it's Italian, which makes
- 1:24:14Mmhmm
- 1:24:14even more interesting because I feel like real quick that market at that time
- 1:24:20like, to the next level, especially with,
- 1:24:22Mmhmm
- 1:24:23westerns and stuff.
- 1:24:24So it's
- 1:24:24Mmhmm
- 1:24:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:24:27my number three is probably gonna hit a big Kern spot, and it's a movie I
- 1:24:33only found out about because excerpts of the dialogue, are used in a death
- 1:24:39metal song that I absolutely love.
- 1:24:41Like, not death metal, but a metal song that I really love, uh, by a
- 1:24:44band called Theater of Tragedy, and the song is, "And When He Falleth."
- 1:24:50And it is The Mask of the Red Death.
- 1:24:53Kearns: definitely hit a big current spot with that one, buddy
- 1:24:56Jon: yeah.
- 1:24:56Yeah.
- 1:24:57So th- this is Edgar Allan Poe, directed by Roger Corman, starring Vincent Price.
- 1:25:02story's pretty straightforward.
- 1:25:04Castle of Prince Po- Prospero has become a refuge for nobles
- 1:25:07fleeing the Red Death plague that's ripping through the countryside.
- 1:25:12Prospero has also taken in a peasant woman, and he introduces
- 1:25:16him, her to his satanic world.
- 1:25:20But can the castle keep the plague out?
- 1:25:26Probably not.
- 1:25:27Probably not.
- 1:25:28I… Aside from the movie, this comes with a, strong, strong
- 1:25:32recommendation for the song.
- 1:25:34It's an epic.
- 1:25:35It's, you know, it's got the growly-voiced guy and the operatic female vocal.
- 1:25:41It's, it's just wonderful, and then you get the, the Vincent Price
- 1:25:45and Jane Asher excerpts mixed in.
- 1:25:49So good.
- 1:25:50So, so good.
- 1:25:52my number two is a Hong Kong movie we've definitely talked about before.
- 1:25:58it's will remain probably forever among the grossest movies I've
- 1:26:06ever watched, bloodiest, grossest movies, and it's The Sadness.
- 1:26:10Um, you know, we talk, we talked about a couple are separated at the outbreak of
- 1:26:16an infection that causes victims to act on their most depraved and violent impulses
- 1:26:24while retaining most of their mind.
- 1:26:27Um, be prepared to things you never imagined, to see things you never
- 1:26:33imagined you would see in a movie.
- 1:26:35It's not for the squeamish.
- 1:26:38Um, it's a very limited audience that this movie is shooting for with the
- 1:26:44gore and the blood and the gross,
- 1:26:46Kearns: He, that
- 1:26:47Jon: it works on…
- 1:26:48Kearns: me
- 1:26:50Jon: That disclaimer is for everybody.
- 1:26:54Like, do not go into The Sadness thinking this is just a zombie movie.
- 1:26:59It's, it's a zombie movie essentially, but ooh, it's a ride.
- 1:27:06Ryan: I'll be sad at the end of it basically
- 1:27:09Jon: I mean, yeah, it is d- it's also not a happy ending, but
- 1:27:15A getting to that unhappy ending will change a person
- 1:27:22And my number one, I mean, we all know I can't resist the opportunity
- 1:27:27to throw George A. Romero into things.
- 1:27:30I already wedged him into this episode, and I'm gonna wedge him
- 1:27:34in at number one, because my number
- 1:27:38one is George A.
- 1:27:39Romero's The Crazies.
- 1:27:40I threw the remake in a couple weeks ago.
- 1:27:43I'm throwing in the Romero one this time.
- 1:27:46man-made virus escapes and takes over a, a small Pennsylvania town.
- 1:27:51The military has to try to contain the outbreak, and they are in- vi- vigorously
- 1:27:57enforcing a quarantine on the town.
- 1:28:01a group of residents are determined to escape, but is anybody able to
- 1:28:06escape this quarantine zone without being sick or offed by the military?
- 1:28:14Not likely.
- 1:28:16And that's The Crazies, and that's five more illness, virus-infected people movies
- 1:28:24Ryan: It's a
- 1:28:24Kearns: Nicely done.
- 1:28:25Nicely done.
- 1:28:27All right, gentlemen.
- 1:28:28Well, I think this wraps up our Raccoon City Welcome or Not episode.
- 1:28:35like I said, it's worth the watch, just for the nostalgia factor if you guys
- 1:28:39wanna go out and take a look at it.
- 1:28:41it was a movie that is called
- 1:28:43Jon: Mmhmm
- 1:28:45Ryan: Yep
- 1:28:46Kearns: and it is more Resident Evily than the other Resident Evil movies
- 1:28:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:52Yeah.
- 1:28:54That's a, that's a reasonable description
- 1:28:57Kearns: All right, everybody, we're getting out of here.
- 1:28:58We'll see you next time, all right?
- 1:29:01Ryan: Take a journey to Raccoon City
- 1:29:05Jon: There you go.
