- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Each week we'll cover a different topic related to the world of competitive dance from the perspective of the judges behind the table.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Hey everyone, welcome back to season six of Making the Impact.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Courtney Ortiz, and I'm here with my co-host, Leslie Mueller.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Happy season six, Courtney.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Are you so excited?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I'm pumped.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy to be back.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: And here we are with our kickoff intro episode of the season.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Amazing! It's so great to be back.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: It's been a long, productive summer with um really no rest at all, I think, for either of us.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: No.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I actually like I did not overbook my summer on purpose this year.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: And I feel like that things just always catch up.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And somehow my summer became so busy, even though I wasn't traveling every weekend.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I had a few like moments in New York City, and but I was still busy as can be in all of this, all of the downtime.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I really I remember you were like very specifically not gonna overbook yourself.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And but then I was like, where are you?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Every time I talk to you, I was like, Where are you?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Where are you?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I thought you were here.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: No, she was everywhere.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So but here we are.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: It's fall, it is season six of Making the Impact, dance season has started, competition season is around the corner, and we are really excited to keep it on going.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm thrilled to be back.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: We have such a fantastic season ahead for all of our listeners.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: I hope you missed us, and I'm sure you are excited that we are finally back for our weekly episodes launching every Thursday.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: We've acquired so many new listeners over the summer as well that we have noticed in our Facebook group.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So continue to listen, catch up on all of the episodes.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: It's a big season for us because we're gonna hit episode 200 in season six, which is gonna be really exciting.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: And I can't wait to jump in.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: But let's talk about some of the things that have been going down in our busy summer, which I know, I think you Leslie, there's a there's an exciting, huge news that we have to tell the world.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: We have you have to tell the world, actually.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I guess I have to tell the world.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Amazing news.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So I got engaged over the summer.
- 2:27unknown: Yay!
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Literally just happened.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: It was it was kind of the end of the summer, actually, if we're going, you know, backwards in time as to how busy our summer has been.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, as of this recording, it was four days ago.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, it's so fresh.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Very fresh, very exciting.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, got engaged in London, which was really nice and memorable.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And London is real cute if if y'all haven't been.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Got to number one get engaged, but also got to visit visit the Capezio store in London.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Got to see new girls at the West End.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Really, really enjoyed seeing a show on the West End.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And, you know, they actually give you glassware at the West End theaters and not plastic cups, which I was like, oh, I feel so fancy with my champagne.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: It is seriously a whole different world in the theater experience in the West End.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: You can like get snacks and they'll bring drinks to you.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And it's like, it's cool.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: It's very different.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: It was very different.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And they the one thing I was kind of disappointed in is you don't just get a playbill.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: You know, in Broadway, you get playbills and they're just there for you to have.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: At on the West End, I'm assuming this is all the way around, but at least at Mean Girls, you had to buy a program, but it was actually a very beautiful souvenir, thick pages, really lovely history of the theater, like whole thing.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: It was a very nice program.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But that was, I was kind of like, man, I like the playbill.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: But I think the playbill is an American institution.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Were there like digital something?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you find out about the cast?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I don't think you do.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: I think you you can look on the screens.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: You know, they had like screens when you went downstairs, kind of where the merch was.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: And I we definitely saw some understudies or some covers for sure because I was looking at the pictures and I was like, that was definitely not that person.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But um, but yeah, so that was interesting and yeah, the uh phenomenal.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: The great the show was great, the dancers were great, the whole thing was was just really well done.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: So that was really fun.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Capizio store is real cute and right next to the block store, surprisingly.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So they've got a little friend in the industry right there next to them.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So that was fun.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we had a really great time uh in London getting proposed to, and now uh not only are we in season six making the impact, but now I have to plan a wedding during season six.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So Oh my gosh.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I cannot believe it is a wedding planning time for you.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: I I just have to say I'm so, so happy for you.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy that you found your person and you're engaged.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I can't believe it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to see that ring in person.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So shout out to my fiance, Matt, who is um amazing and wonderful and well loved by uh his friends and my friends and our families alike.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So we're really excited and ready for the future.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Yay! Uh, that's awesome.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So thanks for sharing that exciting announcement.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Congrats to Leslie.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: And so what's up with your summer?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, you had something that was supposed to be really awesome and then turned out to be kind of disappointing.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm so sad about it still to this day.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: I was heading to my very first nationals with Streets Dance Convention because I'm a brand new faculty member there this season.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: It was such a great season at Streets.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: I highly recommend it to all dancers and studios out there to attend.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: And it was their largest nationals ever, taking place in Houston, Texas, this summer in July.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And we got there, and what are the odds?
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: But there was a huge hurricane that was hitting Houston right at the start of our nationals.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And a lot of dancers and studios and families were were able to make it to the resort before the hurricane started.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Even myself, I thought my flight was gonna get canceled, but I made it in the day before, and majority of the faculty did as well.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: But the next day was hurricane day, and the whole venue lost power um pretty early on in the hurricane day.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And there was huge flooding everywhere, trees were down.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: It was a scene out of a movie for sure.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: We were all very safe in the hotel, but it was scary.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was dark everywhere.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: We had to use our iPhones, we couldn't even charge our phones.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Like there was only one ballroom that had a generator that could supply power.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: And somehow we still ran a portion of some of the classes that were taking place, which were primarily some of the audition classes for scholarships, for colleges, for intensives, and the Dancer of the Year auditions also took place the night before the hurricane happened.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: So things did happen at nationals, but these the saddest news ever we received from the owners, and it was truly heartbreaking.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Ty for handling this so professionally and so well, but he had to make the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of Nationals.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: We didn't even get into our official classes, we didn't even start competition yet besides Dancer of the Year solos, and it was due to the fact that the power outage wasn't guaranteed to be back up for a week's time.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: They had no idea when the power would be back, and the venue said it might not happen until next week.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: So there was even no air conditioning, too.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, we can't run an event in the middle of the summer in Texas without air conditioning.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: No, no, I and it was probably so humid too.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it was such a sh a sad day.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: There were dancers crying everywhere.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: I I send all of my love to the dancers, especially all the seniors who didn't get to have their final nationals.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: But it was, I have to say, the way we went out of this nationals, we still rallied and came together for one of like the highlights of the Nationals event, supposedly, it's bring your parent to class, a hip hop class.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, fun.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So we all kind of were, we were all sad.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: The announcement was made, everyone's crying, a lot of people left, and then they were like, you know, but it would be really awesome if, you know, whoever's still here who wants to come together, like, let's have faculty members there, dancing with dancers, dancing with parents.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: We were all just sweating like crazy, just on the floor, going for it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And it was the most fun.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Like, I everyone was in such great spirits to just be in that room all together for an hour, like hip-hop dancing, watching your parents hip-hop dance.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Like, uh, it was just, I will never forget that moment.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: And uh, Streets has been such a dream come true this season for me.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I've absolutely loved being a part of their family and the professionalism that they bring to the industry is top notch.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: So shout out to Streets, to all of the dancers who were supposed to participate in nationals, sending my love to you all.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: I'm so sorry to it ended that way this season.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: But next season is right around the corner and it's gonna be bigger and better than ever.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Well, that I remember that whole saga and looking at your social media, and it really was the the the pictures and the video of all the water and like it was nuts.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm glad that, you know, I'm sure it was a really difficult decision and just disappointing all the way around.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But that the parent hip hop class sounds really fun.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I'm glad to happen.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was it was so much fun.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: I will never forget that.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: It just it really made my day.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And I just want to give a quick shout, another awesome shout-out to Streets because we like I mentioned, we were able to do the dancer of the year solos at competition and the audition.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: So they were able to use that information and and those results to determine who their dancer of the year winners were going to be for their mini, junior, teen, and senior.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: And they've I want to just give a shout-out in this sense because there's a shift in the industry where a lot of the competitions and conventions are eliminating the gendered uh male and female winners to the titleists or the overall national champion or whatever it is.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: And I love that and I am so here for it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: But I'm not sure if you've noticed this, Leslie.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: I'm curious to see if you have.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: But there are a lot of conventions who have eliminated the gendered titles.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: But if you really look close, it's still always a male identifying dancer and a female identifying dancer winning those two titles.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: And even though they're not labeled by gender, it still almost feels prioritized secretly.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: And I don't I don't know how I feel about that because we can still tell you're doing the same thing that you used to.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: And I have to give props to streets because that was not the case here at all.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: There was interesting.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, like if you look at the results as to who won, it was females across the board, female identifying dancers across the board.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: And obviously, if a male identifying dancer was deserving of winning and was selected to win and was the right person, then they would have gotten it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: But it wasn't prioritized in each age division to make sure we had male representation and female representation in those two slots.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: And I really applaud them for that, for really allowing the faculty and the staff to select who were the best dancers for these titles.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And I think I think we'll continue to see this kind of morph and make sure that, you know, who who's represented is going to be, you know, selected appropriately.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Like you said, based on talent and based on merit, not based on anything else.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And that's how the cookie crumbles, and that is how the cookie should crumble.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: You know, is whoever is the deserving, no matter other, other parts of it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, that's really that's really great that they at least got to get a little bit of the competition in there so that there was results to post, you know, and talk about and and achieve.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, unfortunately, we had to kind of almost go back to COVID virtual times for those announcements where it was live streamed online.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Um, it wasn't the big, huge confetti production and the gradual like cuts throughout nationals to narrow it down.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: You know, that that's like the most exciting part of finding out that you're that winner.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: And I those dancers didn't get to experience that, and I feel bad about that.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: But I shout out to all of the winners, shout out to all of the dancers who participated.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: And yeah, bigger and better next year.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: So moving forward.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Moving forward.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Well, we have had a couple more just sort of fun things happen this summer.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Courtney and I were invited to the dance mom's premiere.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, recently.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: So that was that was something.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: It was, I mean, I was I know that you knew the person who invited us.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: You have a connect to the person, but like I also got the message separately before you even said, Hey, do you want to come to this premiere with me?
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: So I was like, when I got the message, I was kind of surprised and I didn't exactly know why I was being invited.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: But then I started thinking maybe it was because of our podcast.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Which I think it was.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I think it was.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: I think people, you know, now it was sort of la labeled as like a taste makers event.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So when we arrived, there were definitely people who are influential in the industry.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: There were professional ballet dancers, there were Broadway dancers, there were Instagram famous TikTok people in the dance world.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it was really cool to be included in that, you know, that it wasn't just somebody who likes dance being invited.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: It was people who influence the way dance is perceived and, you know, received.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: So that was cool to be included.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: But I do have to say, I was, you know, I think I just was not the right age when Dance Moms came out, the original version.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: It wasn't something that I wanted to watch.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: It just immediately turned me off.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: So I never watched it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Like I'm aware of like who some of these people are, but it just wasn't for me.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: So to to watch this new iteration, which now I have watched, I think, half the first season.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Because we we were we saw the first episode at the event.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: And I have to say, I I honestly just I had wished for something different because it doesn't seem to have changed in the decade plus that it's been since it's been on.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Like from my perception, it seems like the same thing, just another group of people.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's the way they wanted it, but I just I kind of felt like maybe this is an opportunity to change the narrative, and nobody took advantage of that.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I absolutely agree.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: I was really interested to see what they were gonna do.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: You know, as we all know, I think every dancer in in existence that has been growing up in the past 10 years, 15 years of dance competition world has watched dance moms.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Even non-dancers watch dance moms.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: I've actually had like full-blown conversations with my extended cousins on my boyfriend's side who have been like, Courtney, we're like binging dance moms, and they're like lacrosse players.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Like they don't even like they don't dance at all.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And they're like, We saw you in dance moms and we're obsessed with it.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Can you tell us about this world?
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I think that has been the cool bonus to dance moms being out into the world is that it's sharing this crazy competition world with non-dancers that truly know nothing about it and are interested in it.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: And obviously the drama of of it has kept them wanting to learn more.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: But it is a TV show, it is exaggerated, and we know that and we lived that in s in the first dance moms.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I just think that I agree.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I I was really hoping to see a different light and maybe things that we've learned that maybe weren't great ideas uh first time around and not replicating those same things.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Like the pyramid thing.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Like, do we no, do we it's just not real?
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: It's just not real.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Like, we're here to tell you that does not really happen across the board.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe one or two studios somewhere that are like crazy.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: It's just not a thing that happens.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: No.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: So they've must have gotten it from dance bombs if they're doing it.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Like there's that there's no way.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: There's no way.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And so that was one of the things that I was like, man, we're we're really still doing this.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Like, there wasn't anything else you could have done.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Anything, but no.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So that was that was a little interesting.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And you know, like you said, Courtney, haven't we?
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: You you you would have hoped and thought that like maybe we would have learned um from the past, and we're still looking at themes for children that are dancing on stage that are probably not super appropriate.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of the stuff that you know you see on the show, I wouldn't I would hate to see at a dance competition.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I'd be the judge that would be talking about the inappropriateness and yes, you know, know your audience and trigger warnings and all that, you know.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: So that's that was kind of disappointing too.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: I think that was like my biggest takeaway from it is that like between that and also the mental health of the kids, I I felt like this is not good at all.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: This is not normal.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: We shouldn't be allowing our kids to be put in these positions.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't like that we're putting it on television.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Like seeing kids cry on TV like that is not okay, regardless if they're quote unquote acting and it's whatever.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: And also I didn't love, at least in the first episode, how they were really showcasing how one of the moms in particular was like overly stretching their kid and making them train like crazy and like make like drilling them.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: Like, I didn't like that side of it either because then if we're showing that on television, we're saying this is okay, this is normal, this is allowed.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Like, we weren't, I'm here to say on the podcast, like we shouldn't be doing that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: That is not normal.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Just because they're on a popular television show doesn't make that right.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And the same thing applies to all of the themes that we're seeing.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, it's for the shock value, obviously it's for the drama of television, but like even the first episode had like weird glass that's being shattered all over the stage.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Like, absolutely, you know how much I hate littering the stage.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: This would never I would be so mad I wouldn't even be able to critique the dance.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Furious.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: So all that to say, we did really enjoy being able to be a part of the premiere and seeing some friends and some colleagues in the industry.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: And, you know, like I think again the point of it was to have people who influence dance and who are a big part of the dance competition industry there to be able to have conversations like this, you know.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: And of course, any television show in the reality TV world is there to stir up controversy.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: They're not there to make everyone happy.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: They're not there to, you know, send the best message, probably.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Like it is what it is.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: This is reality television.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: It's drama.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: That's what they want.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: They want the ratings.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we do understand all of that.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: But again, like you said, I'm happy, always happy when dance is put in the forefront of the general public's knowledge base.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: But also, like, please then direct them here to making the impact.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: If you have a friend who only played lacrosse and was like, oh, dance moms, that looks interesting.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Tell them to come over here and we'll tell you how it really is.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Maybe we don't have the same drama effect over here on the podcast that lures them in as a reality television show.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: But I but I think there is some drama actually, Courtney.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And like this is gonna be a very long episode because we still have some drama to talk about.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: You know, we do have we do have some drama to talk about.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: And just to wrap up the dance bombs, I just do want to give a shout out to all of the dancers that were on that show that were so darn talented.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Very talented girls.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Extremely talented to glow the new coach on the dance mom series.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Extremely talented.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: She was at the premiere, she did a talk back.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: It was so cool to hear how it all went done, how she got scouted for the actual season.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And we've even had Studio Blue on our podcast previously in a studio spotlight episode.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: So it was kind of like a cool full circle and um to see some of the girls and the dancers, they are very, very talented.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: So shout out to all of the dancers who participated.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: And let us know if you've watched the show and what you think over there.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Come chime in to our Facebook group.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: That being said, the drama.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: There is a lot of drama.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: There is a lot of drama.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: That's why your summer was like non-existent because you thought you had like a couple weeks off and you were like, maybe I'll just chill out and then boom, drama.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, boom, drama.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't heard, if you don't follow me on social media, but I think everyone at this point has heard or have has seen the drama that is going down.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: There is a man in Spain who has stolen multiple choreographic works from 15 choreographers globally in the industry, and I am one of them.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I'm the one that brought this to light.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: A friend of mine is who reached out to me and said, Hey, this looks like your choreography on Instagram.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Who are these people dancing your work?
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: And next thing you know, I'm blasting it on social media, and boom, this post blew up.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: It went viral.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: The world has seen it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: There is over 10 million views on Instagram alone.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: It's also on TikTok.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: It's been shared everywhere.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: There have been publications spread throughout the dance world.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: The news has contacted us.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: It has been a huge, big drama deal all summer long.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: And I don't want to talk about it too much because our very first episode of season six of Making the Impact is featuring myself and three other choreographers that were impacted by this stolen choreography scandal.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: And we, this is our very first time, all of us are sitting down talking live on a podcast about our experience, about what we've learned, about how we feel.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And it is what a way to kick off season six.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's a wild one, y'all.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: And yeah, we go into, you know, kind of in in-depth.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: And this is obviously, you know, if you've listened to our podcast before, you know, we have covered this topic uh multiple times, and we continue to cover this topic because it's important.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: And it's important for the the kids of today, the young choreographers, the young teachers, and the dance parents to understand that this is just as serious as your child plagiarizing a test or pulling somebody's, you know, uh artwork and calling it their own.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: It's just as serious.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And in the dance world, for some reason, it sometimes isn't taken that seriously.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: But the more we talk about it and the more we educate young dancers that this is not okay, the more we will make that reality happen in the future so that nobody's going to have to go through this tra not, it's not even a tragedy necessarily, but it's it's a dramatic, frustrating, important, disheartening.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Thing to happen to you and many, many people.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: So we're we're happy to talk about it more.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: And but yes, it is dramatic.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Like if you wanted some reality TV drama, here we are.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: And we are continuing to fight the good fight with this, to hopefully inspire change in our industry, to change what a lot of people are misinformed about, are uneducated about when it comes to copyright protections in choreography, how to properly credit, um, if you need consent, those types of issues that we, like you mentioned, we have talked about many times.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So here we are again talking about it, and we're gonna keep on talking about it until things change in the dance world.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: So make sure you click next and listen to our first episode of season six.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: It's a hot one.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: All right, but before we head on out, we have a few Making the Impact Awards that were towards the end of last season that we didn't get to shout out.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: So if you attended an IDA affiliated competition, you might have been the winner of a Making the Impact Award.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: That is a special award that your IDA judges choose one award out of the entire competition.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: It can be a solo, duo, trio, line, production, anything, any style that they just couldn't stop thinking about over the weekend.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: And it's a super special award because when you are awarded it, you also get entered into a fan favorite contest over the summer, which we will tell you about in a minute.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: But first, let's hear about some of the final awards that were awarded at the end of the season.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: From Dive Dance Competitions event in Clemson, South Carolina, congrats to Fascinating Rhythm Studio in York, South Carolina for their duo trio, Orange Colored Sky.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: From High Demand Dance Competitions event in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, congrats to CMG Dance Project from Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and dancer Miranda G, who was recognized from making the impact in multiple dances.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: So fun.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: From World Class Talent Experiences event in Norfolk, Virginia, congrats to Dynamic Movement from Suffolk, Virginia for their small group Stand Up.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: And our Nationals winners from Legend Dance Competition Nationals in Long Island, New York.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Congrats to Dance Electra Performing Arts Center from Selden, New York for their small group, Gilded.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: And let's talk about our fan favorite winner.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Like Leslie mentioned, if you are a winner of the Making the Impact Ward during the regional season, you will then be put into an optional fan favorite contest that majority of our winners do want to participate in.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: That takes place on our Instagram, and we post a small clip of your dance where people can vote and nominate you to be the fan favorite.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: We narrow it down to some finalists, and we've finally come with a one winner who will receive a full studio spotlight episode on season six on making the impact.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: And Leslie, would you like to share who that winner was?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: So our 2024 Making the Impact fan favorite winner was Yolanda's Academy of Music and Dance from West New York, New Jersey for their tap dance working day and night.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Stay tuned for their full studio spotlight episode releasing next week on the podcast.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, can't wait for that episode.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: It is a great one.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: And we also had some summer bonus episodes that took place this summer.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: And as I mentioned, Streets Nationals was sadly canceled.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: And fun fact, we were supposed to have a live podcast at Streets Nationals this summer.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I was so excited for it.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: It was going to be hosted by me, and I was going to have special guest IDA judge Maddie Marcatis alongside me on the QA where students and parents and teachers could all attend and ask questions.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: And we had so many people register.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: We have tons of Making the Impact fans that come to Streets Nationals.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Sadly, we couldn't make that happen due to the cancellation.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: So that would have been an additional summer bonus episode for you all to enjoy.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: But instead, we decided to release our live from New York City Making the Impact event back from March 2024 that was sponsored by Capizio, held at the flagship store in the middle of Times Square.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: And we gave you a little sample sneak peek of 45 minutes of that hour and a half long event where dancers, parents, students, professionals all attended and asked questions to Leslie and I.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: It was so fun and interactive.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: We got to meet so many great fans, and there were some really great questions that were that were answered and asked during that event.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't had a chance to listen to that summer bonus episode, take a give it a listen now.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And if you want to hear the full episode, all the full hour and a half, then you can join our Platinum Premium membership to get the final 45 minutes for only$5 a month or$60 for the entire year to help support our podcast for years to come.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, and the Platinum Premium members, we've got a lot of stuff under under our belt ready to give you this year too.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: So it's definitely a worthwhile investment for a little bit of content, a little bit of extra content, uh ad-free listening, and some special, special things from Courtney.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And one last thing we should talk about is one of my favorite things that we do every year is our podcast cover art contest.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Yay.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: So each season, if you look at our uh podcast cover art, which there's, man, now there's been six seasons.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Like that's a lot of people.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: We host a contest on Instagram so that people can submit their favorite dance photo of themselves for a chance to be featured as that cover art art.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: So we have two new people, two new dancers uh gracing our art with your presence.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And that would be Sophia from Studio for the Living Arts in Gray Maine.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: She's on the right in the point shoes.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And Karina from Cranberry, Pennsylvania on the left with a beautiful leg extension.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Yay! I love the new look of our podcast cover art for season six.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Thank you to all of the dancers who participated in our contest and for voting online on our Instagram as well.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: And fun fact, I have to give a shout-out to Sophia because she is a dancer who I have had the pleasure of working with for the past three years up at Studio for the Living Arts.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: And Studio for the Living Arts is a longtime studio client of mine.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: I've actually been going up there to Maine for over 10 years, setting guest choreography and doing guest classes there every summer.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: They spoil me with lobster rolls.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: I absolutely love my time in Portland, Maine.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Susan and Michael and all of the dancers through the years and all the alumni who I still am in contact with to this day.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: You guys are the best.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And I know that they're podcast listeners as well.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to make sure we gave them a nice little shout out.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, I love our new art.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: A couple more things we want to just let you know.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: We have had a lot of Facebook group success with over 3,500 members.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: So if you are not already a member, head on over to Making the Impact, a dance competition podcast community on Facebook.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: You'll answer a few questions.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Tell us who you are, how you're affiliated with the dance world.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And then we have conversations over there all the time that are just interesting and civil.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: It's a civil place to have conversations about dance online.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So come join us there.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Yes, and our Instagram is popping as well.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: We have 14,000 followers over there on Instagram, and we post some really great content throughout the year.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: We always make sure we announce every week when our new episodes have gone live.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: We post clips from our episodes of video clips and Instagram reels.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: We share weekly judges tips every Tuesday.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Our IDA affiliated competitions get a shout out, as well as our podcast sponsors.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: And throughout the competition season, you can meet your judges where you can see which competition events our IDA judges will be sitting on the judging panel.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: So make sure you give us a follow at Impact Dance Adjudicators on Instagram.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: All right, friends.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: So what is coming up this season?
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: We have some new stuff, some old stuff, and some even newer stuff to give you.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the first thing we have to share is it's a little bit of a sad but good.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Because there's something coming.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And the sad news, I'll give you the sad news first.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Our studio spotlight episodes are officially complete.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, they're done.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: They're over with.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: So sad about it.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: And you know, the reason that we've made this decision is because we have another spotlight that we're going to be introducing to you momentarily, but we also want to make our fan favorite contest extra, extra special.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Because now, if you are the winner of the fan favorite contest, you are the only studio spotlight on future episodes and future seasons of Making the Impact.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: So that really makes it a prestigious honor because previously we've featured many studios throughout the years around the globe, very successful studios.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: You can get inside looks into what it's like running their business, what their schedules are like, and things like that.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: People love it.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: And we've definitely showcased many, many great studios out there.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: But there's so many more studios to highlight, and we want to make those fan favorite episodes and winners very exclusive.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: So we are replacing our studio spotlights with genre spotlights.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: This is something that we have been talking about for a while, and it has also been requested that we highlight different genres of dance.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: An entire episode.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: You know, we've touched on this with our tap in hip-hop episodes, but we really wanted to dive even deeper and maybe get some dance history involved, sub-genres within a genre, because there's just like we all know, a dance class, there's not enough time for anything.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: There's never enough time for everything.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: And, you know, not everybody gets the opportunity to go to college and learn about dance history, or famous choreographers, or iconic leaders in the dance world.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: So we're excited to bring you some genre spotlights this season, and we're going to be including Fossi, Rhythm Tap, Breaking, and Contemporary.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: So look forward to those in season six.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to learn about all of these styles, learn more about these styles, and I can't wait to see who those guests are going to be for those genre spotlight episodes.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: So make sure you stay tuned.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Those will be happening throughout season six.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: We also have some new sponsors who you will be hearing on Making the Impact this season.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: So make sure that you go give them a follow on social media, check out their websites, and take advantage of our exclusive promo codes to get discounts on their products and services.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: We are also going to be coming up on our 200th episode this season.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: We are in the process of planning a live event in New York City.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: We are really hopeful that we're going to be able to make this happen.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned on all of our social media platforms.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: And when we do have something to tell you, we'll tell you.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Yes, and just to give a little possible tip, it most likely will be happening end of October or early November because our 200th episode is coming up sooner than later.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: So we have to obviously record it before then.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: So just to kind of, if you know, you want to look at your schedules ahead of time in case you're making a trip to New York, you want to plan it out, come come dance with us, come podcast with us.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a great time.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And Courtney, I think you wanted to chat about the Platinum Premium membership.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'll give you a quick little rundown about Platinum Premium just to remind everybody out there.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: We are still going strong.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: We have over 80 subscribers who are supporting and helping our podcast grow for years to come.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: So shout out to all of our amazing Platinum Premium subscribers.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: It's only$5 a month or$60 one-time fee for the entire year.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: And what you get with the subscription is you get access to ad-free listening for all of season four, five, and six, exclusive member-only access to our monthly QA episodes, as well as occasional bonus episodes throughout the season.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: You get free stickers in the mail, maybe even some surprise merch that is sent your way throughout the year, and also a discount on an online critique from me or another IDA judge.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: And last season we introduced a new feature to Platinum Premium, which we will be continuing on with this season, and it allows for a little bit more of a community feel where we get to jump on Zoom.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: All of the members are invited to jump on Zoom with me three times a year.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: We'll touch base at the start of the dance season, we'll check in at the top of 2025, and then we'll have a final roundup at the end of competition season to just hear how your dancer is doing, any questions you want to ask me personally, connect with other Platinum Premium subscribers from around the world and create that community feel, which is so much fun.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: I've loved getting to know some of the members throughout the year.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: So if you want to join our Platinum Premium subscription, head on over to our website at Impact Dance Adjudicators.com slash Platinum Premium to help support our podcast.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: And another reminder for our listeners, we also have an online critique service through Impact Dance Adjudicators, and it's available at any time during the year.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: You are able to submit videos from rehearsal, from performance, from competition to get feedback from an IDA judge.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: You can get a genre-specific critique, you can request additional feedback.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: This is a great way to get some feedback about your routines before the season starts, really at any time that you want it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: So that is always available if you head to our website and check that out.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: But we also have something new this season, right, Courtney?
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, we have added a new feature to our online critique service, which thank you to everyone who is continuing to send in your dances year after year.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Many are requesting certain judges.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: We have genre-specific judges that get to watch your dancers solo every single year.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: It's kind of cool.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: Our judges love providing the service, and we want to take it one step further and now offer a service for the choreographers, the dance teachers, the studio owners, and even the aspiring young choreographers out there.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: And it's called the choreography consult critique.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: This is exclusive to choreographers, and this is a way for choreographers to have another person, another professional in the industry put that second set of eyes on their choreographic work.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: And this isn't about the technique, this isn't about the performance, this isn't about all of those things that we typically focus on at dance competitions when we're judging the dancer or the dancers.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Now we're actually talking about the choreography.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: Um, things that might be discussed on a choreography critique include proper use of stage, use of level changes, transitions, the execution, dynamics and shading within the movements, formations, visuals, song choice, themes, uh, appropriateness, costuming, all of those things are in the hands of the teacher and the choreographer.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot of choreographers out there who want to get extra feedback on their work that they're putting out into the world.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: Is it working?
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Is it not?
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: What can we do better?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: How can you make your vision come to life?
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: So our IDA judges are here to help guide you and help offer that second set of eyes to make your choreography stage ready and score as best as it can at competition.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: So we're really excited about this.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: If you uh want to submit your choreography to us for a choreography consult, it's a brand new form on our website.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: You will always be guaranteed additional feedback with the service as well as an automatic guarantee of a genre-specific judge that specializes in your submitted dance genre for the most accurate feedback.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: And I'd love for you to check it out.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: The critiques start at$65 on our website.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: Learn more at ImpactDanceedjudicators.com slash online critiques and send us your dances now.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: We can't wait to see them.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: And for all of our dance judges, dance educators, submissions are still open to become an IDA judge.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: So we've already received a lot of amazing submissions.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: I've seen a bunch of them.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Really excited to add some new people to our roster this season.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: So if you would like to join the roster of judges who make an impact around the country, be sure to click the link in our show notes to submit your applications before September 25th.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: That is coming right around the corner.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: So go ahead and get that application in and join our roster.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: We have a lot of great perks for judges.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Um, we believe in treating judges fairly, paying judges fairly.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: So head on over and see if you want to be selected.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, and that's leading us out of this episode.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: We have a lot of great episodes in store for season six.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, I cannot wait to dive in and get back to recording, Leslie.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be such a blast.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: And um, I want to just give you a few little teasers about what's to come.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: So everyone should just anxiously wait for these episodes to launch.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, we have another levels chat coming up, which I mean, how many, how many times have we talked about this on the podcast book?
