- 0:04Speaker 1: How you doing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Freddy Rodriguez and I'm about the rama. Welcome
- 0:08Speaker 2: to those amigos today. Uh three amigos and Gus, yes,
- 0:13Speaker 2: the little it's you know, introduced our incredible guest today.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Well let's see here we have esteemed comedian, former NFL cheerleader,
- 0:24Speaker 3: former Mad TV cash member, Angela Johnson.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And come on, come on, I mean we have such
- 0:31Speaker 1: a big audience here. They told that to cheers much.
- 0:33Speaker 4: It's Angela Johnson Rays. Now I added my married name
- 0:37Speaker 4: name in the game.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We all appreciate that at.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Those Yeah, yeah, yeah, I took about ten years of
- 0:42Speaker 5: us being married before I was like, all right, well
- 0:45Speaker 5: you had it for ten looks like you're sitting around so.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So, you know, here at the Amigos, we we love
- 0:54Speaker 2: asking the way back questions, you know, like where you're from,
- 0:59Speaker 2: you know where you're parents from.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm from the Bay Area, from the Bay Jose,
- 1:05Speaker 5: San Jose. My dad grew up in LA And funny story,
- 1:11Speaker 5: when I first moved to LA to pursue my dreams
- 1:14Speaker 5: to be an actress, if I would get lost going
- 1:16Speaker 5: to auditions. And again this is before you know GPS
- 1:19Speaker 5: on your phone. This was the Thomas Guide and everything
- 1:21Speaker 5: like that, and I would print out my map from
- 1:24Speaker 5: the computer at home, my my Yahoo maps, and I
- 1:27Speaker 5: would print it out, and if I ever got lost,
- 1:30Speaker 5: I would call my dad and tell him what street
- 1:32Speaker 5: I was on, and then he would navigate me to
- 1:33Speaker 5: get to my.
- 1:34Speaker 6: Audition from memory.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Yeah, from memory wow.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Yeah. So he'd be up in San Jose and he
- 1:39Speaker 5: would navigate me to my audition in LA. But my
- 1:42Speaker 5: dad grew up here in LA and then moved to
- 1:45Speaker 5: the Bay. My mom's from the Bay from San Jose.
- 1:49Speaker 6: Ethnically, where are your parents from?
- 1:51Speaker 5: I'm Mexican and Native Americans, fourth generation my dad, yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 5: and they both have Native blood as well, mainly my
- 2:05Speaker 5: grandpa my dad's side, but both my parents do have
- 2:09Speaker 5: Native blood.
- 2:09Speaker 4: But I'm fourth generation.
- 2:11Speaker 5: My my grandma was born here, I think in Utah.
- 2:20Speaker 6: Yeah, what tribe?
- 2:22Speaker 5: If I may ask, Tigua Tigua, and I don't know
- 2:26Speaker 5: too much about it.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I wish I knew more.
- 2:28Speaker 5: I wish, And then I would ask my grandpa. Anytime
- 2:31Speaker 5: any of us asked our grandpa to give us like
- 2:35Speaker 5: answers on things, it was always different answers. He's since passed,
- 2:38Speaker 5: but we all got different answers. How we got the
- 2:40Speaker 5: last name Johnson, We all have different answers. He told
- 2:43Speaker 5: us something about a Swedish ship came here one day,
- 2:47Speaker 5: hooked up with a Native American person something whatever. He
- 2:51Speaker 5: told us so many different stories of our origin. And
- 2:56Speaker 5: then I I just I wish.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I knew more.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Like our family reunion when I was young, was on
- 3:05Speaker 5: a reservation in Phoenix, in Arizona when I was a
- 3:08Speaker 5: little kid.
- 3:09Speaker 4: But I don't know anything about it. I wish I did.
- 3:14Speaker 6: And both of your parents are from the same tribe.
- 3:17Speaker 5: No, I don't know what my mom's bloodline is.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Connected to. I only know from my dad's side.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Wow.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And so you lived up in the Bay And when
- 3:29Speaker 2: did you decide to come down to Los Angeles two.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Thousand and three, I moved here. I was a cheerleader
- 3:37Speaker 5: for the Oakland Raiders.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Before you came here.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I was twenty And the
- 3:44Speaker 5: only reason why I auditioned to be a cheerleader for
- 3:45Speaker 5: the Oakland Raiders is because I wanted to be an actress.
- 3:49Speaker 5: And I was using that as my sign if I
- 3:52Speaker 5: should pursue the entertainment industry, you know, And at first,
- 3:56Speaker 5: the entertainment industry was just a fantasy, a very far
- 4:00Speaker 5: fetched fantasy. That's that's not for people like me. That's
- 4:04Speaker 5: not for people where I grew up.
- 4:05Speaker 4: That's for them. You know, I don't know. I don't
- 4:07Speaker 4: know how to I don't even know how to do it.
- 4:09Speaker 5: And then I remember when the Internet first came out
- 4:12Speaker 5: and everybody had AOL dial up. I remember logging onto
- 4:16Speaker 5: AOL dial up and trying to search how do you
- 4:19Speaker 5: get an agent? And being in San Jose and I
- 4:22Speaker 5: was like trying to search how do you start being
- 4:24Speaker 5: an actor?
- 4:25Speaker 4: And I found like an acting school in like a
- 4:31Speaker 4: modeling agent.
- 4:31Speaker 5: They're like, okay, send your resume, and like what resume?
- 4:34Speaker 5: Like I don't have yeah, And then so I remember
- 4:38Speaker 5: I just made up a resume.
- 4:39Speaker 2: What you put in the resume because I have, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 2: I put the most unnecessary stuff and the special skills?
- 4:47Speaker 1: How did you fill your out?
- 4:49Speaker 5: So my first resume, before I knew anything, I don't
- 4:52Speaker 5: even know. There was not even a proper like structure
- 4:55Speaker 5: to it. It was just like what school I went to,
- 4:58Speaker 5: and then any kind of acting. I wasn't even an
- 5:01Speaker 5: acting class in school, but I just like made up
- 5:03Speaker 5: stuff and put on there. I was like, I can
- 5:05Speaker 5: do this accent, I can dance. I can't.
- 5:08Speaker 6: And you did absolutely no acting before.
- 5:10Speaker 1: You did no, zero, nothing. You were just like I
- 5:13Speaker 1: want to be an actress, like high nothing like that.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I love it.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Wow you I didn't do any of it.
- 5:20Speaker 5: And I remember I printed it was like in purple
- 5:22Speaker 5: ink and I printed. I was like, let me at
- 5:23Speaker 5: least make it pretty.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Yeah, And I just mailed it out to a bunch
- 5:27Speaker 5: of people, and of course I didn't hear back from anybody.
- 5:29Speaker 5: And so I ended up having a friend, a friend
- 5:33Speaker 5: of a friend at the time, who had moved to
- 5:36Speaker 5: LA from San Jose, and she was in a Ross commercial.
- 5:39Speaker 4: And she was in an instinct.
- 5:40Speaker 1: She was doing she was doing it.
- 5:43Speaker 5: She was I knew somebody famous was this is just
- 5:46Speaker 5: like how how do I do.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Holding up the rasher? Tell you I'm such a similar
- 5:54Speaker 1: moment to yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And I remember I get on the phone with her
- 5:57Speaker 5: one day and I was like, hey, I want to
- 6:00Speaker 5: do what you're doing, Like how do I do that?
- 6:03Speaker 5: And she was like, okay, Well, if you ever moved
- 6:05Speaker 5: to LA, I'll help you. I'll help show you the
- 6:07Speaker 5: ropes I'll help you get started.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Oh yeah, And I was like, hmm, all right. Now
- 6:11Speaker 4: it's like I have an actual past.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You have some kind yet.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Exactly exactly if I want to, Like I've been trying
- 6:19Speaker 5: but I don't know what I'm even looking for. But
- 6:21Speaker 5: now I have a girl saying well, if you come
- 6:23Speaker 5: out here, i'll help you. So right around that same time,
- 6:26Speaker 5: I ran into an old friend who I grew up
- 6:29Speaker 5: doing pop Warner cheerleading with since I was eight years
- 6:31Speaker 5: old and hadn't seen her in years, and we were
- 6:33Speaker 5: at some club.
- 6:34Speaker 4: We were dancing.
- 6:35Speaker 5: We're like, oh, yeah, how you been, and she's like, oh,
- 6:36Speaker 5: I'm a raiderete now and I'm like, oh, good for you.
- 6:40Speaker 4: And she's like, we have tryouts next week. You should come.
- 6:42Speaker 5: And I was like, oh no, that's not really my jam.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And of course, because i'm like tomboy, you know, and
- 6:51Speaker 5: when you think of like raderets, you think of like
- 6:53Speaker 5: sexy pretty And I'm like I'm good, thanks, and she
- 6:57Speaker 5: was like, no, you should come try out, and I
- 7:00Speaker 5: started to think about it.
- 7:01Speaker 4: I was like, you know what, I'm gonna.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Go try out interesting challenge, like yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Not even because I want to be a cheerleader for
- 7:07Speaker 4: the Oakland Raiders. But I'm going to use it as
- 7:09Speaker 4: my sign.
- 7:10Speaker 5: If I make the squad, right, then I'll go to
- 7:13Speaker 5: LA and my friend says she would teach me how
- 7:16Speaker 5: to get started, so then I'll do it. But if
- 7:18Speaker 5: I don't make the squad, I'm gonna use it as
- 7:19Speaker 5: my sign that the entertainm ministry is not for me,
- 7:22Speaker 5: and I'll just figure something else out.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So Unfortunately, if you hadn't made it.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Let me tell you what was.
- 7:30Speaker 1: The tryout?
- 7:31Speaker 4: Like what did so it was in Oakland.
- 7:34Speaker 5: There was seven hundred girls at this open call audition
- 7:37Speaker 5: the first.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I mean everyone wanted to be a Raider girl dude
- 7:39Speaker 1: like in the day dooms.
- 7:41Speaker 5: There was like it was kind of costumes like cats,
- 7:45Speaker 5: like just why anybody came. Everybody came, whether you were
- 7:49Speaker 5: mentally healthy or not. Everybody came to this audition.
- 7:53Speaker 1: They're hanging out sandwiches. Everyone shows up.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Well, yeah, there is over seven hundred girls there.
- 7:59Speaker 5: In the first round of the audition is really just
- 8:02Speaker 5: you stand on a stage with like twenty other girls
- 8:06Speaker 5: at the time.
- 8:06Speaker 4: They break it down in groups.
- 8:08Speaker 5: And then one at a time, you like step forward
- 8:10Speaker 5: and you answer a question and then you step back
- 8:12Speaker 5: and that's it.
- 8:13Speaker 4: That's the whole first call.
- 8:15Speaker 5: And then so I made it past that round, I'm like, oh, okay, great,
- 8:18Speaker 5: this is good. And the next round was you had
- 8:21Speaker 5: to learn a routine and perform the routine in front
- 8:25Speaker 5: of judges. Now it's down to like maybe three hundred girls.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Now, did you have any dancing experience, You're like.
- 8:30Speaker 4: No other than the Pop Warner cheerleading.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I had a rhythm, yeah, yeah, yeah, h I could dance,
- 8:35Speaker 1: You could probably remember choreography and.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Synchron exactly, but I didn't know technical dance moves like purowets.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know that that job was giving to
- 8:45Speaker 1: that one person that can do it. Everybody else can
- 8:47Speaker 1: do the dance.
- 8:48Speaker 5: So the dance routines that were doing in Pop Warner
- 8:51Speaker 5: are very like stiff I'm a cheerleader, you know, and
- 8:54Speaker 5: this was more like.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Purohet turn, flip your hair, yeah yeah yeah, And I'm.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Like, oh, it's a performance, oh yeah yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 4: And it was a whole different vibe from what I
- 9:03Speaker 4: grew up doing.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Did you feel like you were getting character too, Like,
- 9:07Speaker 2: were you like somehow embodying something else?
- 9:09Speaker 4: I definitely it was one of those like till you
- 9:14Speaker 4: make it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, think about the contrast, right, You're like, oh, I'm
- 9:16Speaker 2: kind of like a tom girl that you know, I
- 9:18Speaker 2: don't know about that.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden something else wakes up and.
- 9:20Speaker 4: You're like, yeah, y, yeah, I think it was.
- 9:23Speaker 5: I knew I had rhythm. I couldn't really do the
- 9:27Speaker 5: move that she was teaching.
- 9:28Speaker 4: We were in this like.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Banquet hall of a hotel and there's a stage and
- 9:33Speaker 5: the choreographer is on stage with her Britney spears microphone
- 9:36Speaker 5: and she's like teaching us all the choreography and there's
- 9:38Speaker 5: like three hundred us trying to learn it. And they're
- 9:40Speaker 5: doing you know, like turn and slip your hair and
- 9:43Speaker 5: all the thing. And I'm just like, well, I have attitude,
- 9:47Speaker 5: and I have like you know, I know how to
- 9:50Speaker 5: sell it, and I have personality.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I know how to work it. So I was just
- 9:54Speaker 4: working it and I was like, what what are I cam?
- 9:56Speaker 1: As long as I enjoyed, I can flip my hair.
- 9:59Speaker 5: I probably won't spot where everybody else is spotting, but
- 10:02Speaker 5: you're gonna see.
- 10:02Speaker 4: My hair, right.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But that's what they're looking for.
- 10:04Speaker 2: They're looking for that comfortability, that confidence. Yeah, the steps
- 10:08Speaker 2: are the steps you can learn that. Nobody has enough
- 10:10Speaker 2: time to learn them anyways. You know they're just looking for, like,
- 10:13Speaker 2: who is just enjoying it, who's having.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Well, it's a little bit of that.
- 10:17Speaker 5: But also you gotta be in line with everybody when
- 10:20Speaker 5: you're doing the performance up front.
- 10:22Speaker 4: You gotta know what you're doing.
- 10:24Speaker 5: So there was definitely that moment of the choreographer coming
- 10:27Speaker 5: off of stage, weaving her way through the three hundred
- 10:31Speaker 5: girls and coming up to me and saying, clearly, you
- 10:34Speaker 5: have no.
- 10:35Speaker 6: Dance experience, no way.
- 10:38Speaker 4: That was.
- 10:40Speaker 5: You have something that cannot be taught ah, And I.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Knew exactly what she meant.
- 10:46Speaker 5: She was right, I didn't have dance experience, and she
- 10:48Speaker 5: was also right, I do have something in me, and
- 10:51Speaker 5: I know it. I didn't have acting experience from high school.
- 10:54Speaker 5: I didn't have it, but I knew I had something something.
- 10:56Speaker 5: I knew I had something to offer. I knew there
- 10:58Speaker 5: was something within me, and I ended up making the squad.
- 11:02Speaker 5: And I remember when they called my number. I think
- 11:05Speaker 5: I was like number eighty nine or something. I forget,
- 11:07Speaker 5: but I remember they called my number that I had.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Made the squad, and my first thought was not. Oh
- 11:12Speaker 4: my gosh, I'm a cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders like
- 11:15Speaker 4: I made it. My first thought was.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I'm going to be an actress.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, this is I'm going to be an actress.
- 11:22Speaker 4: This was my sign and so I did it for
- 11:25Speaker 4: one year. We went to the super Bowl that year,
- 11:28Speaker 4: Like what a year?
- 11:28Speaker 1: Topict.
- 11:31Speaker 5: So the very next weekend after the Super Bowl, I
- 11:35Speaker 5: came home, I packed up my room and I moved
- 11:38Speaker 5: to LA and my little station wagon, my hand me
- 11:41Speaker 5: down station wagon that my mom gave me. I packed
- 11:43Speaker 5: up my room, drove til the very next weekend after
- 11:46Speaker 5: the super Bowl, and my friend kept her word and
- 11:49Speaker 5: she helped me get started as an extra.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I was an extra on Friends. That was my first
- 11:56Speaker 4: Still to this day, it's my favorite job.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I wait, wait, so.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Talk so so walk us through that experience.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Oh a magical experience, let me tell you.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:03Speaker 5: So my friend she kept her word and she's like, Okay,
- 12:07Speaker 5: this is what I want you to do. I want
- 12:08Speaker 5: you to go sign up at Central Casting and to
- 12:11Speaker 5: go be an extra.
- 12:12Speaker 4: When you get there, there's gonna be a line of
- 12:14Speaker 4: people out the door waiting to sign up to be
- 12:17Speaker 4: an extra.
- 12:18Speaker 5: I don't want you to wait in line. I want
- 12:19Speaker 5: you to go to Ralph's. I want you to get
- 12:21Speaker 5: a tray of cookies, and I want you to bring
- 12:22Speaker 5: a raider at headshot. Go to the front window. Ask
- 12:25Speaker 5: for this man. When he comes out, give him the cookies.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Give me your headshot. Just say I'm new to town
- 12:31Speaker 4: and I want to be an extra. That's it, That's
- 12:34Speaker 4: all you need to do.
- 12:35Speaker 5: And immediately I start thinking like, oh my god, people
- 12:38Speaker 5: have told me about casting couches.
- 12:39Speaker 4: I'm not trying to be that girl one of these
- 12:42Speaker 4: sleazy cookies. You try to have me drop off? What
- 12:46Speaker 4: you sprinkles mean? Is that code for something?
- 12:48Speaker 1: No?
- 12:48Speaker 4: Thank you?
- 12:49Speaker 1: But you know what, I gotta tell you something.
- 12:52Speaker 2: The cookies was a real thing, dude, because all of
- 12:55Speaker 2: us brought cookies to casting directors, to aid jans to
- 12:59Speaker 2: like you know, yeah, like I that was the thing.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I remember I brought cookies to something yeah before.
- 13:05Speaker 4: So she knew what she was doing.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And I.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Show up, I do the thing. There's a line of
- 13:11Speaker 4: people out the door. I'm like, oh my god, she
- 13:12Speaker 4: was right. I'm walking past people with my sleazy cookies
- 13:15Speaker 4: and I'm like, oh my god.
- 13:16Speaker 5: They all know, like they're all judging me right now
- 13:18Speaker 5: as I walk past them with my cookies and I
- 13:20Speaker 5: go inside as you know is you know, say I'm here.
- 13:22Speaker 5: I don't remember his name and say I'm here, and
- 13:24Speaker 5: she's like, yeah, hold, I'll help you right out. This
- 13:26Speaker 5: guy comes walking out from the back offices and he's
- 13:28Speaker 5: wearing a Raiders hat no and I'm like, oh, hello,
- 13:33Speaker 5: this is for you, and it's my Raider at headshot
- 13:35Speaker 5: and we're fresh off the super Bowl like a month ago.
- 13:37Speaker 4: We're just at the super Bowl.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Immediately he's like, Raider's no way, Oh my gosh. Then
- 13:42Speaker 5: we start talking about you know, Raiders stuff, and it's like,
- 13:45Speaker 5: oh my gosh. So you're here, all right, great, give
- 13:47Speaker 5: me your number, blah blah. Next week he calls me.
- 13:49Speaker 5: He's like, hey, I have a spot on Friends. If
- 13:51Speaker 5: you want to go on Friends. I'm like, oh, my
- 13:52Speaker 5: favorite show in the woid world.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Yeah I do.
- 13:54Speaker 4: I do want to be on Friends, Thank you so much.
- 13:57Speaker 4: And so I go to be an extra on Friends.
- 14:00Speaker 4: I don't know what I'm doing.
- 14:01Speaker 5: It's my first time being on the set of an
- 14:03Speaker 5: actual TV show. I don't know anything, Like my friends
- 14:07Speaker 5: trying to prepare me like, okay, this is.
- 14:08Speaker 2: What you do, you know, like live audience, the whole thing,
- 14:11Speaker 2: some monsters, like.
- 14:13Speaker 5: What it's going to be like just know your place,
- 14:15Speaker 5: don't be trying to talk to everybody. Just you know,
- 14:17Speaker 5: She's give me all the tips that she could give
- 14:19Speaker 5: me to prepare me. And then at the time, I
- 14:22Speaker 5: don't know if you guys.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Remember this, the hustle to try to get your SAG card.
- 14:25Speaker 5: But it was like being an extra. You get your
- 14:29Speaker 5: non union voucher or your union voucher, and you had
- 14:32Speaker 5: to get like three union vouchers in order to join SAG,
- 14:37Speaker 5: right right right, But so all these non union extras
- 14:41Speaker 5: were waiting for a union extra to not show up
- 14:44Speaker 5: so that they could get their their vouchers. So that's
- 14:46Speaker 5: how it worked. So if this union SAG extra didn't
- 14:50Speaker 5: show up, now we have an extra SAG voucher for somebody,
- 14:53Speaker 5: and so people would get it, and whoever the ad
- 14:56Speaker 5: like the most you get the SAG voucher. Once you
- 14:58Speaker 5: got three of them, then you got to join the union.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Well, this guy put me in the computer system as
- 15:04Speaker 5: a SAG extra, So immediately I just started getting SAG
- 15:07Speaker 5: vouchers right away because he just hooked me up. And
- 15:11Speaker 5: then I had all these extras trying to learn from me,
- 15:14Speaker 5: going how do you get to sag?
- 15:16Speaker 4: How do you get a SAG voucher?
- 15:18Speaker 5: I don't know how yeah, and I'm like this guy
- 15:22Speaker 5: laugh and I was like cookies, just like, yeah, bring sprinkles.
- 15:39Speaker 5: So I ended up getting my SAG vouchers like immediately
- 15:42Speaker 5: within my first three times of being an extra, and
- 15:46Speaker 5: ended up making friends with the A D. Because I
- 15:48Speaker 5: was funny and I would make him laugh and he
- 15:51Speaker 5: was funny and I would laugh at his jokes, and
- 15:53Speaker 5: so we would just goof off with each other and
- 15:55Speaker 5: he'd be like, I'm gonna bring.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Friends yea, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 5: And so he'd bring me back and then the next da,
- 16:01Speaker 5: I'm gonna bring you back again. Next you know, I
- 16:03Speaker 5: was an extra for season nine and ten.
- 16:07Speaker 4: I'm in the background.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You can see me like making a living.
- 16:09Speaker 4: By the way, Oh this is my living. This is
- 16:12Speaker 4: my groceries.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Let me tell you yeah craft service, Yeah, that was
- 16:18Speaker 5: my groceries.
- 16:19Speaker 4: You better believe I came with my satchel a bunch
- 16:23Speaker 4: of Wriday there.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Also that at that time friends had I mean yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 2: they were like the biggest show.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Oh, the best service.
- 16:33Speaker 2: So the craft service was like you know, probably corn
- 16:35Speaker 2: dogs and lobsters. Oh one night did they recorded Friday Nightdays?
- 16:40Speaker 4: It was magic.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Did you ever cut a reel of like all of
- 16:43Speaker 6: your like walk away?
- 16:44Speaker 4: I should do that.
- 16:45Speaker 6: You should.
- 16:46Speaker 5: I've been tagged, Like people will be watching an episode
- 16:50Speaker 5: and they find you, they find me, and they'll tag
- 16:51Speaker 5: me and on Instagram and I'd be like, oh, that's me.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 16:55Speaker 5: There was one moment though, cutting ahead a little bit,
- 16:57Speaker 5: but there was one moment. I had booked a movie
- 17:00Speaker 5: and it was filming in Alabama, and I'm in the
- 17:04Speaker 5: gym at the hotel and I'm running on the treadmill
- 17:06Speaker 5: at the gym, and I'm watching Friends on the TV
- 17:09Speaker 5: screen and I see myself walk by in the background,
- 17:12Speaker 5: and it.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Was this magical movement yes, of like this is where
- 17:16Speaker 4: I started.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Yes, And here I am like on location yea to
- 17:21Speaker 5: like film something where I get to say words yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 5: you know, like so magical.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Such a cool, cool experience.
- 17:29Speaker 2: To reflect on that, right to just say, like, one
- 17:32Speaker 2: day you said I just need a sign, and.
- 17:34Speaker 1: God gives you the most miraculous sign.
- 17:38Speaker 2: You know, I made you in the squad so you
- 17:40Speaker 2: can go do your destiny, like you made it to
- 17:42Speaker 2: the Raiders in the super Bowl, just so you can
- 17:44Speaker 2: go your destiny. And then you see yourself and reflecting that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: It's really really, really special. Going back to the set
- 17:52Speaker 2: of friends. You were there for so long, like how
- 17:55Speaker 2: was the cast?
- 17:56Speaker 1: Was the cast credible? Yeah, there will be really cool people.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I definitely had moments where I got to speak to
- 18:03Speaker 5: all of them and be very like friendly with them.
- 18:08Speaker 5: And and I think it's really because I knew my place.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Like I wasn't trying to be friends, be friends or anything.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You were there so often that at some point you're.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Gonna have And then they would say hi to me
- 18:21Speaker 5: because they recognized me, and you know, they would just
- 18:24Speaker 5: have their moment, Hey, good to see you, and I'm like,
- 18:26Speaker 5: oh my god, she's happy to see And they even
- 18:33Speaker 5: invited me to their Christmas party, their holiday party.
- 18:36Speaker 4: I was like one of the only extras there.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 18:38Speaker 2: And did you did you have you bumped into any
- 18:41Speaker 2: of them? Since you no interesting, I haven't interesting.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Should you should invite them to one of your shows?
- 18:48Speaker 3: I should, and and then and then that should be
- 18:51Speaker 3: a part of your show.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Done that for that.
- 18:57Speaker 1: To make it happen.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're entire castcast too well. I do have
- 19:05Speaker 4: a funny story of one time I was a stalker.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeahed to break.
- 19:13Speaker 4: News one time I was a stalker.
- 19:15Speaker 5: I do have a comedy special called Technically Not Stalking,
- 19:19Speaker 5: but that's that was about my husband. But Marta Kaufman,
- 19:23Speaker 5: one of the creators of Friends. One time I was
- 19:25Speaker 5: driving in Beverly Hills and I saw her getting out
- 19:31Speaker 5: of her car and walking into a seven eleven and
- 19:34Speaker 5: I was like, oh my god, that's Marta Kaufman.
- 19:36Speaker 4: I have to go say something to her. I could
- 19:39Speaker 4: be like on her next show or something. This is
- 19:41Speaker 4: like that young desperate actor.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I'm like, bliss, oh.
- 19:46Speaker 4: And like Martin, it's a sign. Marta Kaufman is right there.
- 19:49Speaker 5: I pull into seven eleven and I follow her in
- 19:53Speaker 5: to the seven eleven and I'm just like going up
- 19:55Speaker 5: and down the aisle, just like fully stalking her.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Then she gets to the register. I don't know what
- 19:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna say, and I'm like, excuse me, are you
- 20:02Speaker 4: Marta Coffin. She's like yes, and I'm like, it's so
- 20:05Speaker 4: nice to meet you. And then I walked out.
- 20:08Speaker 6: You didn't you didn't tell her your name or that
- 20:11Speaker 6: was just a weirdo.
- 20:12Speaker 4: I didn't buy anything, I didn't bite.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I can't.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Nobody teaches us well say like no, I justn't what
- 20:18Speaker 2: to say in that situation, you know, like what do
- 20:20Speaker 2: you say?
- 20:20Speaker 4: It was such a weirdo.
- 20:22Speaker 3: So now you have to invite Marda Coffin in your
- 20:24Speaker 3: podcast if you're watching.
- 20:28Speaker 2: When from from from those moments of you know, being
- 20:31Speaker 2: an extra? Why were your first auditions that eventually were like,
- 20:36Speaker 2: oh I'm going for a part, like how how long?
- 20:39Speaker 1: And then which ones were those?
- 20:42Speaker 5: I crashed every audition I could. I my first bookings
- 20:49Speaker 5: were commercials.
- 20:51Speaker 4: I booked a.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Sprint commercial and that was a I crashed that audition.
- 20:58Speaker 5: My friend got that call and I just showed up
- 21:01Speaker 5: with your.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Friend that Oh yeah, I was a national car Oh yeah,
- 21:06Speaker 2: yes I.
- 21:09Speaker 5: I my first speaking role for an actual like show.
- 21:13Speaker 5: A character that I auditioned for was the Shield and
- 21:19Speaker 5: I lied on my resume. So my friend who showed
- 21:23Speaker 5: me the ropes, she was like, Okay, we gotta get
- 21:25Speaker 5: you a real resume. I had nothing to put on it,
- 21:27Speaker 5: so she helped me put some things on it. And
- 21:30Speaker 5: then I had another friend at the time, Noel Noel
- 21:36Speaker 5: Googliami Noel g So he gave me all of his
- 21:43Speaker 5: credits that he had ever done, and he was like,
- 21:45Speaker 5: just put this on your resume. Just say you were
- 21:47Speaker 5: like Yolanda or somebody. And he's Hector and everything, right exactly,
- 21:53Speaker 5: So every basically everything he was on.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Probably Latinos. There, there's some chola next to him, you
- 22:02Speaker 4: were the chola. Just put Yolanda.
- 22:04Speaker 6: I was mousey.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I was mousey.
- 22:07Speaker 5: So I started adding all these credits to my resume
- 22:10Speaker 5: that I was not on. But are you really going
- 22:12Speaker 5: to go look for these two lines in this one episode?
- 22:14Speaker 5: It was one of those kind of things, right, So
- 22:16Speaker 5: now I have this resume of it's not extensive, it's
- 22:18Speaker 5: not thirty things, there's like six things, you know, like
- 22:20Speaker 5: I'm still getting started out.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, a perfect heist.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Oh the perfect.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I go to the audition and immediately the casting Dirk,
- 22:31Speaker 5: I forget what show it was.
- 22:32Speaker 4: All these names leave my brain.
- 22:35Speaker 5: But so she's reading my resume and she says, oh,
- 22:39Speaker 5: I'm just gonna make up a show here, because I
- 22:40Speaker 5: don't remember which one it was.
- 22:41Speaker 4: So let's just say. She's like, oh, you were on
- 22:43Speaker 4: CSI Miami and I'm like mm hmm yeah. She's like, oh,
- 22:47Speaker 4: that's funny. I cast that show. I don't remember you.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Ah, oh my god? Why why?
- 22:59Speaker 4: Okay, just go it's weird.
- 23:03Speaker 6: But did it Did it say like the actual episode
- 23:06Speaker 6: you were on?
- 23:08Speaker 4: No, it just said the show and my character.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I mean, but at this point, like
- 23:15Speaker 2: to you and I remember everything your cast?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Yeah, twenty three episodes show.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Did you get the part?
- 23:23Speaker 4: I booked it. It's one of those things. I always
- 23:27Speaker 4: remember you.
- 23:28Speaker 1: But the beginning, I don't know what I got to
- 23:30Speaker 1: do to.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Get in here, but I got to show you I
- 23:32Speaker 5: can do this. It was training, but I can do it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: The beginning of this podcast, we all kind of shared,
- 23:40Speaker 2: you know, the the delusion of bliss and outgoings of
- 23:45Speaker 2: the hustle. Yeah, and we talked about those moments. We
- 23:48Speaker 2: we just kind of hacked the game a little bit.
- 23:50Speaker 2: And in order to hack the game, you have to
- 23:53Speaker 2: be foolishly just optimistic about the fact that you are
- 23:57Speaker 2: the chosen one, you know, and that's something that, like
- 24:01Speaker 2: we all kind of you have to possess if you're
- 24:03Speaker 2: going to enter like the five percent of working people,
- 24:06Speaker 2: you know. And and that story reminds me so much
- 24:09Speaker 2: when when we talk about like I used to go
- 24:11Speaker 2: to Backstage West and go to the agent submission only
- 24:16Speaker 2: auditions because we know those were the good ones. Cata
- 24:19Speaker 2: Cauls were like, you know, here we go, but like
- 24:21Speaker 2: agent submission. So I show up and I will memorize
- 24:23Speaker 2: my auditions. I memorize from like people's shoulders, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and I just.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Rise because I didn't get his highs.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I don't have an agent, so like I look down
- 24:32Speaker 2: and I just like like I'm like okay, no, no, no,
- 24:35Speaker 2: and I'm like okay, he's going, and I'll go this okay,
- 24:39Speaker 2: just memorized, memorized, and then I put like you know,
- 24:43Speaker 2: Smiths and Associates because I thought it was like a
- 24:46Speaker 2: very Caucasian.
- 24:48Speaker 1: And then in the number, I like to put my
- 24:50Speaker 1: pager because I was like, yeah, it was pretty it
- 24:55Speaker 1: was pretty crazy.
- 24:55Speaker 2: So you reminded me of that moment because that's like
- 24:57Speaker 2: sometimes especially we we have to be scrappyard, you know,
- 25:01Speaker 2: also like we can't. We're not gonna we're not gonna
- 25:03Speaker 2: enter through the front door, you know. And now it
- 25:05Speaker 2: us really into through the front door. We have to
- 25:07Speaker 2: kind of bullishly get optimistic and.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Guests and those stories are such good reminders for us
- 25:14Speaker 5: even where we are today, in our own careers, in
- 25:17Speaker 5: our own lives, where we may take for granted, or
- 25:21Speaker 5: we may get jaded, or we.
- 25:24Speaker 4: May feel.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Bummed about something, or the colors of your dream start
- 25:33Speaker 5: to look a little muted, it starts to pale a
- 25:36Speaker 5: little routine, right, you know, it's a little bit of
- 25:39Speaker 5: of that. And then when you remind yourself of these stories,
- 25:44Speaker 5: it almost like ignites something in you and then the
- 25:47Speaker 5: colors of your dream start to get a.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Little lights the fire up again. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But you said something interesting earlier. You said I had
- 25:56Speaker 3: no experience. I did knock when I was a kid,
- 25:59Speaker 3: but I knew that I had something in me.
- 26:02Speaker 6: I don't know what that thing was. And the same
- 26:04Speaker 6: with you, right, you knew you had something in you.
- 26:08Speaker 3: So yeah, we could sit there and hack the system
- 26:10Speaker 3: and crash auditions and all that, but all of that.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Is but once we're rod.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's predicated you knowing that there's something there
- 26:20Speaker 3: which is beyond like, oh, I just.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Want to be famous. Oh yeah, or like a dream.
- 26:24Speaker 6: You know, your inner self, you know you possessed something.
- 26:37Speaker 2: So you booked a bunch of guest stars and then
- 26:41Speaker 2: a few few guests and then you landed.
- 26:43Speaker 4: What so I was went from an extra to a
- 26:49Speaker 4: stand in on a different show. Yeah, So the a
- 26:53Speaker 4: D once Friends was done, he left and went to
- 26:56Speaker 4: this show and he brought me with him.
- 26:57Speaker 6: Can you can you say what Joe?
- 26:58Speaker 4: Yeah, it's called Love and it was on upn Love
- 27:02Speaker 4: Love Ink Loving Club Love Ink.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 4: So it was like a dating service show. Right, it's
- 27:08Speaker 4: a sitcom. Yeah yeah, yeah, And so I'm a stand
- 27:10Speaker 4: in now on that show. And that's where so the.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Shield came after this, because this is where I got
- 27:16Speaker 5: my actual first speaking role. And I was a stand
- 27:19Speaker 5: in for the entire season and the very last episode
- 27:24Speaker 5: they didn't cast one of their co star roles and
- 27:29Speaker 5: the cast said, well, what about Angela?
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, she's always saying the line.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Yeah, what about her? Why don't you give her this role?
- 27:35Speaker 4: And they're like okay, And.
- 27:37Speaker 5: That's how I got my first speaking role. I didn't
- 27:39Speaker 5: audition for it, but that's how I got my first
- 27:41Speaker 5: speaking But.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Also, you know, one thing to explain to everyone who
- 27:44Speaker 2: doesn't understand what a standing is.
- 27:45Speaker 1: A standing is is.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Another performer who who has the job to kind of
- 27:51Speaker 2: prep the scene before the actor comes in to perform.
- 27:54Speaker 2: So they stand on the mark that the actor blocks
- 27:56Speaker 2: when they rehearse, you know, and they technically recite the
- 28:00Speaker 2: entire scene. Some stand ins, you know, choose to perform
- 28:03Speaker 2: the whole scene for when, by the way, the cameras
- 28:06Speaker 2: are not rolling, but they're performing this scene with the
- 28:08Speaker 2: other stand ins to make.
- 28:10Speaker 5: Sure the cameras can practice, the lights can get there
- 28:12Speaker 5: and everything.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah, sometimes they ask you not to perform.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Sometimes they would be like, don't they don't want you to,
- 28:20Speaker 5: They don't want you to like perform it.
- 28:23Speaker 4: And then some they would just let you have your moment. Listen,
- 28:27Speaker 4: she was a professional.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Okay, why do you think they would say not to
- 28:30Speaker 3: perform it?
- 28:33Speaker 7: I don't know, fear they that I'd be better and
- 28:42Speaker 7: then Jennifer Aniston would be no more.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Sometimes they just.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Want you to walk, hit your mark, say like the
- 28:47Speaker 5: beginning of the sentence and then whatever and like that's it.
- 28:51Speaker 5: But so that's how I got my first speaking role
- 28:53Speaker 5: was on that show. So I went to be a
- 28:55Speaker 5: stand in while I'm a stand in on this show.
- 28:58Speaker 5: I'm going to this church and every Tuesday night at
- 29:02Speaker 5: this church was their creative arts ministry night, and so
- 29:05Speaker 5: they would have a dance class, an acting class, production
- 29:07Speaker 5: if you want to get a production, there's production class.
- 29:09Speaker 5: Because it's a church in Hollywood, so they know that
- 29:12Speaker 5: most of their congregation is people trying to be the
- 29:14Speaker 5: entertainment industry. So they had all these free classes that
- 29:17Speaker 5: they offered. I was in their acting class and we
- 29:20Speaker 5: would play improv games and I would be funny in
- 29:22Speaker 5: the improv games. And then there was a woman who
- 29:25Speaker 5: was there who said, Hey, do you want to come
- 29:28Speaker 5: take my joke writing stand up comedy class? And I
- 29:31Speaker 5: was like, I don't know.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Is it free?
- 29:33Speaker 5: And she was like yeah, it's just in this room
- 29:35Speaker 5: over here, and I'm like, oh, okay, sure. So then
- 29:38Speaker 5: I leave the acting class and I go to the
- 29:39Speaker 5: stand up comedy class, and that's where I first start
- 29:43Speaker 5: writing jokes. And I remember at the time, I was like, yeah,
- 29:48Speaker 5: I could probably do that. I do this Nail Salon character.
- 29:52Speaker 5: I'm sure I could make that into a joke, and
- 29:54Speaker 5: she was like, Nail Salan jokes are so hacky.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Everybody has one stay away from Nail Slan.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I love it when people say that.
- 30:01Speaker 5: And I was like, you know what, but I don't know.
- 30:04Speaker 5: If anybody doesn't like me, I think I'll still do it.
- 30:08Speaker 5: And I took this class and at the end of
- 30:12Speaker 5: the class and it was like a two month class.
- 30:14Speaker 5: Every Tuesday night, our graduation was we had to perform
- 30:17Speaker 5: at a real comedy club and it was a bringer.
- 30:19Speaker 5: Everybody had bring ten people, right, so everyone in the
- 30:22Speaker 5: audience knew this was a graduating stand up class.
- 30:25Speaker 4: They knew just laugh it was not funny. Is a
- 30:27Speaker 4: warm wind?
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah? Of course.
- 30:29Speaker 4: We all wrote jokes and.
- 30:31Speaker 5: The teacher went through everybody's set and she picked your
- 30:35Speaker 5: five minute set from everything you wrote in these past
- 30:37Speaker 5: two months. She picked your five minute set, and then
- 30:40Speaker 5: when it got to me, she said, just do all
- 30:42Speaker 5: your jokes.
- 30:43Speaker 4: So I had twelve.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 5: So I go on stage, I do my joke and
- 30:48Speaker 5: my closer is this Nail Salon bit, which at the
- 30:50Speaker 5: time looked and sounded a little bit different because the.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Ending of that joke was a callback.
- 30:57Speaker 5: This new thing I learned called a callback in my
- 30:59Speaker 5: class was a callback to a joke I did earlier
- 31:02Speaker 5: where I talked about me being an extra. I wrote
- 31:04Speaker 5: a joke about me being an extra and how my
- 31:06Speaker 5: parents were so proud of me. And so the end
- 31:08Speaker 5: of the nail salon joke ended with me calling my
- 31:12Speaker 5: mom saying, this girl's talking the nail salan lady's talking
- 31:16Speaker 5: about me. And she goes, oh, she doesn't know who
- 31:18Speaker 5: you are.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Show her who you are.
- 31:19Speaker 5: And then I get up and I just start walking
- 31:21Speaker 5: silently back and forth because that's what I did as
- 31:23Speaker 5: an extra.
- 31:24Speaker 4: So that's my I'll show you who I am. Oh amazing.
- 31:30Speaker 4: So that's how that joke ended. Should I bring it back?
- 31:36Speaker 4: I think?
- 31:38Speaker 5: So I did this stand up comedy class while I'm
- 31:42Speaker 5: a stand in on this show. Then the show gets
- 31:45Speaker 5: canceled and my friend the ad who basically just took
- 31:49Speaker 5: me to every show he was on, now he's not
- 31:51Speaker 5: on a show, so he didn't have any work either.
- 31:54Speaker 5: So now I'm on unemployment and I'm waitressing at whatever
- 32:00Speaker 5: restaurant I can waitress at, and I'm doing stand up
- 32:05Speaker 5: comedy kinda like I didn't want to be a comedian.
- 32:07Speaker 5: I wanted to be an actress. So every now and
- 32:10Speaker 5: then I would go do like a five minute set
- 32:13Speaker 5: at whatever bar, whatever, laundry mat whatever, you know what
- 32:16Speaker 5: I mean.
- 32:18Speaker 4: But I didn't want to be a stand up so
- 32:20Speaker 4: I wasn't like pursuing it.
- 32:22Speaker 5: And I get I'm I'm this is around the time
- 32:27Speaker 5: when I have no agent, I don't have any auditions
- 32:30Speaker 5: coming in, I'm waitressing, I'm on unemployment, and now I'm
- 32:35Speaker 5: at the end of unemployment.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Unemployment checks run out. I don't know if everybody knows that,
- 32:39Speaker 4: but they don't last for.
- 32:42Speaker 5: So unemployment checks are done, and I'm kind of in
- 32:46Speaker 5: this place where I'm like, oh, I.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Think, excuse me, sir, she has to go. This was
- 32:54Speaker 4: so fun, so much. Tune in for part two.
