The DiCecco Daily: Landon Dickerson To IR Fallout; Takeaways from Vic Fangio · Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast

• 0:08
Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome into another episode of
• 0:10
Speaker 1: the Checo Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: And we're going to get into some of what Vic
• 0:17
Speaker 1: Fangio had to say. Tuesday is coordinator day down at
• 0:21
Speaker 1: the Jefferson Health Training Complex. But I first want to
• 0:24
Speaker 1: get to you the news from Monday night. Pretty big news.
• 0:29
Speaker 1: And the Eagles are placing left guard Landon Dickerson on
• 0:33
Speaker 1: injured reserve. This was first reported by Jeff McClain of
• 0:36
Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Inquirer. And if you watch Sunday's game against
• 0:41
Speaker 1: the Commanders, you can clearly see that Landon was not
• 0:44
  Speaker 1: moving very well.
• 0:45
Speaker 2: He allowed, I believe, according to Pro.
• 0:47
Speaker 1: Football Focus, four pressures and a sack. He just didn't
• 0:52
Speaker 1: look like the three-time Pro Bowl guard that he is.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: And he was on Sports Radio WIP, the Jay Wilkes
• 1:01
Speaker 1: Hunt show, and he talked about.
• 1:06
Speaker 2: That he wasn't, you know, he.
• 1:08
Speaker 1: Pretty much admitted that he didn't play well and he
• 1:12
Speaker 1: took full accountability for it as Landon always does. And
• 1:16
Speaker 1: he mentioned that it was a bone bruise in his
• 1:19
Speaker 1: knee that happened when he was rolled up on in
• 1:22
Speaker 1: practice a few weeks ago. This is something that when
• 1:26
Speaker 1: he's placed on injured reserve, he's going to miss four
• 1:29
Speaker 1: weeks at least. And rest is really what you need
• 1:33
Speaker 1: to be able to bring yourself back to close to
• 1:36
Speaker 1: full strength. But with this type of injury and given
• 1:38
Speaker 1: the player and what he's been through in his career,
• 1:42
Speaker 1: it's hard to imagine that they're going to rush him back.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: But it's important to note that Landon Dickerson is tough
• 1:51
Speaker 1: as nails, needless to say. And he's battled through so
• 1:54
Speaker 1: many injuries, not only with the Eagles, but also dating
• 1:57
  Speaker 1: back to his.
• 1:58
Speaker 2: Time at Alabama in college.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: And if you think back to the 2024 season, the
• 2:05
Speaker 1: postseason run, and what he had to do to gut
• 2:08
Speaker 1: it out to help the Eagles win a Super Bowl,
• 2:12
Speaker 1: I mean, that's the stuff of legends right there.
• 2:15
Speaker 2: And you can never say that Landon didn't give his
• 2:18
  Speaker 2: all or didn't.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: Do everything possible to be available on Sundays. He battled
• 2:23
Speaker 1: through so much. Nick Sirianni has talked a lot about that.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: His teammates have talked a lot about that. But it
• 2:28
Speaker 1: seems like his body... has been betraying him over the
• 2:32
Speaker 1: past couple of years. Now, remember back to last summer,
• 2:35
Speaker 1: last August, he suffered a meniscus injury in the Eagles'
• 2:39
Speaker 1: public practice at Lincoln Financial Field.
• 2:42
Speaker 2: He took care of that, was back.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: In time for the Eagles' season opener against the Dallas Cowboys,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: played in 15 games last season, and it still wasn't
• 2:50
Speaker 1: the Landon Dickerson that we've grown accustomed to seeing. It
• 2:53
Speaker 1: was hardly vintage Landon, but it was passable. But The
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Landon Dickerson that you saw, that version on Sunday, it
• 3:03
Speaker 1: was hard to imagine him being even ready to play
• 3:06
Speaker 1: Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. But a pretty significant injury,
• 3:11
Speaker 1: pretty significant update, I should say, with the Eagles. And
• 3:16
Speaker 1: they lose their three-time Pro Bowl left guard for at
• 3:19
  Speaker 1: least four weeks.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: And I go back.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: To this offseason and the time and investment, I should say,
• 3:26
Speaker 1: that Landon put into his body and the recovery process.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: He had stem cell therapy and Medin trying to leave
• 3:35
Speaker 1: no stone unturned to return to training camp as healthy
• 3:37
Speaker 1: as possible. It's also worth noting that in training camp,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: he had two days that he was designated as rest, uh,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: no injury designation, just rest. And there were a lot
• 3:49
Speaker 1: of moments where when he wasn't available or when the
• 3:52
Speaker 1: Eagles wanted to give him a breather, it was, second-year
• 3:56
Speaker 1: offensive lineman Drew Kendall, who spelled him at left guard.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: And we'll get into some of the potential replacement options
• 4:04
Speaker 1: and how they could fit, what they're all about. I'll
• 4:07
Speaker 1: try to provide some of the background that I've gathered
• 4:10
Speaker 1: over the past months in training camp, of course, but
• 4:13
Speaker 1: also what I know about the player from having conversations
• 4:16
Speaker 1: with them in the open locker room and what I
• 4:19
Speaker 1: know from watching them in college and so forth.
• 4:22
Speaker 2: But That's a pretty significant one.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: But whoever is stepping in at left guard for the
• 4:28
Speaker 1: Eagles is going to give you better production than this
• 4:32
Speaker 1: version of Landon Dickerson. And I think Landon is someone that,
• 4:37
Speaker 1: you know, being around him for a number of years
• 4:40
Speaker 1: covering this team, he is someone who has a lot
• 4:42
Speaker 1: of pride. And he's not going to want to be
• 4:44
Speaker 1: out there if he doesn't feel that he's giving the
• 4:46
Speaker 1: Eagles a decided advantage there. He's certainly not someone who's
• 4:50
Speaker 1: going to hurt the team in any way.
• 4:52
  Speaker 2: And so.
• 4:53
Speaker 3: Football is finally back and PrizePix is bringing out their

• 6:39
Speaker 3: I'm someone who really likes to wear jeans, but it's
• 6:41
Speaker 3: becoming really, really hard these days. to find genes that
• 6:45
  Speaker 3: aren't tight-fitting or restricting, especially for someone who's active. I
• 6:50
Speaker 3: like to go to the gym. I'm always out and about.
• 6:52
Speaker 3: Even when I'm not active and I'm just sitting in
• 6:54
Speaker 3: a chair, you start to get that feeling of being
• 6:57
Speaker 3: constricted and restrained, and I hate that feeling.
• 7:00
  Speaker 2: Perfect example.
• 7:01
Speaker 3: Last year, I did a fantasy football draft. It took
• 7:04
Speaker 3: three hours, and I could just feel myself moving around
• 7:07
Speaker 3: my chair, adjusting myself, but everything changed when I found
• 7:12
Speaker 3: the perfect jean. It's a jean that fits me just right.
• 7:15
Speaker 3: It doesn't pinch. It stretches nicely. Here's what makes these
• 7:19
Speaker 3: genuinely different from other stretch jeans, all right? They don't
• 7:23
Speaker 3: look like stretch jeans. They look like sharp, classic denim.
• 7:27
Speaker 3: They're so polished that you can go straight from like
• 7:30
Speaker 3: a tailgate parking lot right to a dinner reservation without
• 7:33
Speaker 3: anybody clocking you as that guy who just spent four
• 7:35
Speaker 3: hours in a lot. I just recently did another fantasy
• 7:39
Speaker 3: football draft And I wore the perfect jean and I
• 7:42
Speaker 3: was just so comfortable. Look, these things are flexible enough
• 7:45
Speaker 3: that you can actually move around in them. You can
• 7:47
Speaker 3: bend to get that drink in the cooler. You can
• 7:51
Speaker 3: sit in a chair for a few hours. You can
• 7:53
Speaker 3: stand for the anthem at a ball game. You can
• 7:56
Speaker 3: get up and guard somebody in a pickup game wearing
• 7:58
Speaker 3: the perfect jean without even hearing a seam threatened to
• 8:02
  Speaker 3: give out.
• 8:02
  Speaker 2: All right.

Speaker 3: using the code BIRDS.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: He was very transparent about the injury. I think you
• 8:27
Speaker 1: have to tip your cap to Landon for doing the
• 8:30
Speaker 1: radio spot on Monday night, given everything that was going on.
• 8:34
Speaker 2: It would be so easy to.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: Bail on that and prioritize your health and really kind
• 8:39
Speaker 1: of lay low. But instead, he committed to his obligation,
• 8:43
Speaker 1: and he was very transparent. in his performance, and he
• 8:47
Speaker 1: offered some insight into the injury that has now placed
• 8:50
Speaker 1: him on injury reserve. Now, how will the Eagles go
• 8:52
Speaker 1: about replacing Landon Dickerson in the interim?
• 8:56
Speaker 2: Well, they have a couple of options.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: They have Drew Kendall, who I mentioned. They also have
• 9:01
Speaker 1: Willie Lampkin. Some background on both players. Drew Kendall, I thought,
• 9:06
Speaker 1: made one of the biggest jumps from year one to
• 9:10
Speaker 1: year two this summer. I was thoroughly impressed with his progress.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: He increased his weight to 305 pounds and when I
• 9:17
Speaker 1: checked in with him last week I said Drew I
• 9:20
Speaker 1: know that in training camp you mentioned that you bulked
• 9:22
Speaker 1: up to 305 but training camp tends to you know
• 9:27
Speaker 1: you tend to shed weight in training camp because it's
• 9:29
  Speaker 1: so hot outside.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: Where are you holding your weight right now.
• 9:33
Speaker 1: And he said about 305 so that's still a little
• 9:36
Speaker 1: light for a guard and especially with the matchup against
• 9:40
Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons and the Tennessee Titans forthcoming but I like
• 9:45
Speaker 1: what he brings from a technical standpoint. He's incredibly smart
• 9:49
Speaker 1: and really tough. He's a center by trade, to be clear.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: He only played center at Boston College. The Eagles drafted
• 9:55
Speaker 1: him in the fifth round in 2025, and so he
• 10:00
Speaker 1: cross-trained at guard this summer, and he played almost exclusively
• 10:05
Speaker 1: at guard this summer. Reason being is he's well acquainted
• 10:08
Speaker 1: with the center position. It was about getting him better
• 10:10
Speaker 1: adjusted to guard and allowing him to become the Eagles'
• 10:15
Speaker 1: top interior backup, much like Brett Toth. And I talked
• 10:18
Speaker 1: a lot about this in the summer.
• 10:20
Speaker 3: And I think nobody loves grilling more than me. It
• 10:23
Speaker 3: could be 30 degrees and I'll be out there grilling
• 10:25
Speaker 3: burgers and steaks. But the one thing that I really
• 10:28
Speaker 3: can't stand is losing my fish and my veggies because
• 10:31
Speaker 3: they just can't grill without falling through. That's why I've
• 10:35
Speaker 3: been using Hexclad's BBQ Collection. It's bringing hybrid technology outdoors
• 10:41
Speaker 3: with products specifically designed to make grilling easier, especially when
• 10:45
Speaker 3: you're cooking foods that normally don't cooperate on a traditional grill.
• 10:49
Speaker 3: The hex-clad BBQ grill pan combines the searing power of
• 10:53
Speaker 3: stainless steel, durability of cast iron, and the convenience of
• 10:57
Speaker 3: nonstick all in one versatile grill pan. They've also launched
• 11:00
Speaker 3: their new BBQ grill topper. That gives you even more
• 11:03
Speaker 3: control when you're cooking delicate foods like veggies or seafood,
• 11:07
Speaker 3: or if you're cooking multiple portions at one time. Last week,
• 11:10
Speaker 3: I grilled the best surf and turf my style, which
• 11:14
Speaker 3: is salmon and ribs, and lost none of it because
• 11:17
Speaker 3: I used... Hexclad's BBQ collection. With over 1 million customers
• 11:21
Speaker 3: and more than 50,000 five-star reviews, it's clear people love
• 11:26
Speaker 3: cooking with Hexclad. There's a reason Gordon Ramsay uses Hexclad
• 11:29
Speaker 3: at his home and in his restaurants, and he's the
• 11:32
Speaker 3: toughest critic on the planet. So if you're planning on
• 11:35
Speaker 3: spending time behind the grill this summer, don't make it
• 11:37
Speaker 3: harder than it needs to be. Stop losing food through
• 11:39
Speaker 3: the grates and upgrade your backyard cooking setup with Hexclad's

Speaker 3: BBQ collection. For a limited time only, Our listeners get

• 12:00
Speaker 3: know we sent you. As I've gotten older, I've really
• 12:02
Speaker 3: tried to concentrate on my physical health, my body, making
• 12:06
Speaker 3: sure I'm putting the right things in and the healthiest
• 12:09
Speaker 3: things in. I've always heard about creatine. But I wasn't
• 12:12
Speaker 3: really sure about using creatine supplements until I did the
• 12:15
Speaker 3: research to find out what it was really all about.
• 12:18
Speaker 3: That's when I found Momentous, which created Signature Spec Creatine,
• 12:23
Speaker 3: their most advanced creatine ever, setting a new standard for
• 12:27
Speaker 3: creatine quality. It's one of the only creatines to be
• 12:30
Speaker 3: manufactured in a pharmaceutical facility using reverse osmosis water purification
• 12:36
Speaker 3: and verified through an expanded six-stage testing process with four
• 12:40
Speaker 3: independent agencies. They've improved the product experience with ultra fine
• 12:44
Speaker 3: powder that mixes effortlessly with no grit or clumping. Hey, look,
• 12:49
Speaker 3: I like a good creatine shake in the afternoon and
• 12:52
Speaker 3: it's got to taste good and be smooth. The benefits
• 12:55
Speaker 3: of creatine are very real. It supports strength, power, lean
• 13:00
Speaker 3: muscle growth, recovery, and even improve cognitive performance. And as
• 13:03
Speaker 3: I get older, all of those things are so much
• 13:06
Speaker 3: more important to me than They used to be. If
• 13:08
Speaker 3: you want to try Momentous Signature Spec Creatine, head to LiveMomentous.com

• 13:29
Speaker 1: There's a lot of trust and confidence. I know the
• 13:32
Speaker 1: organization is high on him and rightfully so. This is
• 13:35
Speaker 1: someone who is very sharp-minded. You can see the ability
• 13:39
Speaker 1: that he has when he's on the field. Now, I'm
• 13:42
Speaker 1: not going to sit here and gaslight anyone and tell
• 13:44
Speaker 1: you that I know definitively that he's going to go
• 13:46
Speaker 1: out there and check off every box and be a
• 13:49
Speaker 1: dominant force. You still have to let that play out,
• 13:51
Speaker 1: of course, and this is a really tough matchup if
• 13:54
Speaker 1: it is, in fact, Drew Kendall who's inserted at left guard.
• 13:57
Speaker 1: So context is going to be really important, but I'm
• 14:00
Speaker 1: just telling you what I saw in training camp and
• 14:02
Speaker 1: what I saw in training camp as a player who
• 14:04
Speaker 1: made notable strides from year one to year two. He
• 14:07
Speaker 1: played 89 snaps a season ago, so not a lot
• 14:10
Speaker 1: of experience, and he has no experience.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: Playing guard at the NFL level.
• 14:14
Speaker 1: But I think if you're looking at just the body
• 14:16
Speaker 1: of work from training camp and if you're looking at
• 14:19
Speaker 1: it through the lens of how the Eagles chose to
• 14:21
Speaker 1: deploy him, he was the first guy up at guard spots,
• 14:25
Speaker 1: both guard spots, mostly left guard, when they needed someone
• 14:28
Speaker 1: to step in with the first team. And even with
• 14:30
Speaker 1: the second team, he was there repping at either left
• 14:33
Speaker 1: or right guard. Jake Majors played center a lot with
• 14:35
  Speaker 1: the second team.
• 14:36
Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
• 14:41
Speaker 3: long lines, we've all been there. But when it comes
• 14:44
Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
• 14:48
Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans. Just minutes outside of Philly
• 14:52
Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast.
• 14:55
  Speaker 2: No hassle.
• 14:56
Speaker 3: No waiting. And they don't just care about convenience. Camden
• 15:00
Speaker 3: Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff makes
• 15:04
Speaker 3: sure you feel taken care of every time you walk in. Plus,
• 15:08
Speaker 3: they carry only the best quality cannabis at the fairest price.
• 15:12
  Speaker 1: Prices.
• 15:13
Speaker 3: So whether you're stocking up for the tailgate, the watch party,
• 15:16
Speaker 3: or celebrating a big win, you know you're getting the
• 15:19
Speaker 3: good stuff without overpaying. They even show love to the
• 15:23
Speaker 3: community with specials for fans, students, service members, and healthcare pros.
• 15:29
Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
• 15:34
Speaker 3: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
• 15:36
Speaker 1: Even when there is a brief period in one practice
• 15:40
Speaker 1: early on, I can remember where Cam Juergens went inside early,
• 15:44
Speaker 1: just a few minutes before the end of practice, and
• 15:48
Speaker 1: Jake Majors was called upon to step in at center.
• 15:51
Speaker 1: It seems like offensive line coach Chris Cooper and the
• 15:55
  Speaker 1: team really wanted.
• 15:56
Speaker 2: To have that guard exposure really....
• 16:04
Speaker 1: Sort of ingrained in Kendall so that if something like
• 16:06
Speaker 1: this were to pop up or if you need to
• 16:08
Speaker 1: plug somebody in, in game, there's not this needless shuffling
• 16:12
Speaker 1: because everyone's prepared. And I think everything that I've gathered
• 16:15
Speaker 1: on drew Kendall suggests that he's a player that will
• 16:18
Speaker 1: run with his opportunity.
• 16:20
Speaker 2: And I'm really looking forward to talking to him this week.
• 16:22
Speaker 1: There's also another player and Willie Lampkin, who I know
• 16:26
Speaker 1: is a fan favorite already. And rightfully so. Well, he's
• 16:29
  Speaker 1: a great guy. He's a hard worker and a really
• 16:32
Speaker 1: good story. He's another player that the Eagles are high on.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: He played guard and center in training camp. He has
• 16:39
Speaker 1: guard experience dating back to his time in college. Really
• 16:42
Speaker 1: unique player, standing at 5'11, maybe 290 pounds, but he
• 16:47
Speaker 1: plays with the natural leverage, really technical, and a powerful base. So,
• 16:53
Speaker 1: Willie Lampkin gives you something unique there. He's quick, off
• 16:57
Speaker 1: the ball. He packs a punch, and... I think, I
• 17:03
Speaker 1: have to go check my notes on this, but I
• 17:05
Speaker 1: think when he was repping with the second team, he
• 17:09
Speaker 1: never repped with the first team, to be clear. It
• 17:11
Speaker 1: was mostly at right guard, but I have to check.
• 17:14
Speaker 1: I mean, I'm pretty sure that He would be able
• 17:16
Speaker 1: to do left guard if they needed him to, if
• 17:18
Speaker 1: they believe that that's the best solution moving forward.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: So that shouldn't be viewed as off the table.
• 17:23
Speaker 1: But my sense would be that Drew Kendall would be
• 17:26
Speaker 1: the replacement for Landon Dickerson. But we'll learn more, of course,
• 17:30
Speaker 1: as the week progresses based off of what we see
• 17:33
Speaker 1: in practice and what we learn from talking to the
• 17:36
Speaker 1: players in the locker room. Then there's also the potential of,
• 17:40
Speaker 1: and I don't know that this is particularly likely because
• 17:42
Speaker 1: you never want to change players. Two players for continuity purposes,
• 17:45
Speaker 1: but you can also move Cam Juergens, who played guard
• 17:49
Speaker 1: when Jason Kelsey was here at center. You can move
• 17:52
Speaker 1: him to guard, but he played right guard. You could
• 17:57
Speaker 1: do that, but then you're now moving two pieces. You
• 18:00
Speaker 1: would be moving Drew Kendall to center and Cam Juergens
• 18:04
Speaker 1: to left guard. But Sean Mannion, when he spoke today,
• 18:07
Speaker 1: said that their goal is to field the best five
• 18:10
Speaker 1: offensive linemen, however that looks.
• 18:12
Speaker 2: So that's important to note.
• 18:14
Speaker 1: That would be probably the less likely option, but you
• 18:17
Speaker 1: can never rule it out. We're obviously going to find
• 18:19
Speaker 1: out more this week. But in my estimation, based off
• 18:24
Speaker 1: of everything that we learned in training camp, watching how
• 18:27
Speaker 1: they distributed the snaps and who was first up here
• 18:31
Speaker 1: and there, it would seem most likely that it would
• 18:34
Speaker 1: be Drew Kendall. To be honest, if that is the case,
• 18:38
Speaker 1: I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he's able
• 18:40
Speaker 1: to do out there and seeing how his progress on
• 18:44
Speaker 1: the practice fields translates into game situations after a year
• 18:49
Speaker 1: of really learning behind the scenes. picking the brain of
• 18:52
Speaker 1: Jeff Stoutland and now Chris Cooper. And he's a sharp guy.
• 18:56
Speaker 1: He puts a lot of work in. I know that
• 18:58
Speaker 1: from talking and hearing what different players had to say
• 19:01
Speaker 1: about him, certainly in the summer. So that is sort
• 19:04
Speaker 1: of the nuts and bolts of the guard situation and
• 19:10
Speaker 1: bringing you all up to speed on Landon Dickerson. But
• 19:13
Speaker 1: we also heard from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio today, who
• 19:17
Speaker 1: is always a gem. I very much value what he
• 19:20
Speaker 1: brings in terms of his His candidness and just his
• 19:26
Speaker 1: blunt nature, I think, in providing a lot of the
• 19:29
Speaker 1: answers that we all want answers to. When talking about
• 19:34
Speaker 1: the last two drives, he said, yeah, the last two
• 19:37
Speaker 1: drives there, we just didn't play well enough. The quarterback
• 19:39
Speaker 1: scrambling hurt us some. It just, it wasn't good the
• 19:43
Speaker 1: last couple for sure. He spoke about defensive back Cooper Dejean,
• 19:49
Speaker 1: and after the game, Cooper Dejean mentioned that his eyes
• 19:52
Speaker 1: can sometimes get bad. You often hear defensive backs talk
• 19:56
Speaker 1: about making sure you have good eyes and things like that.
• 20:00
Speaker 1: But it was sort of the spirit of the question was,
• 20:03
Speaker 1: have you seen it? And how do you work with
• 20:06
Speaker 1: him on it? He said, I think it can happen
• 20:09
Speaker 1: at times, and at times it's helpful too. We just
• 20:12
Speaker 1: got to make sure he can stay tight enough to
• 20:14
Speaker 1: his assignment and not let his vision get too skewed
• 20:17
Speaker 1: to where he gets out of position. He spoke about
• 20:22
Speaker 1: Mauro Jomo making that play on the two-point conversion, which
• 20:26
Speaker 1: was a fantastic experience. just instinctual play, and I think
• 20:29
Speaker 1: it really accents and highlights Morrow's football intelligence and play recognition.
• 20:35
Speaker 1: But Vic says it was just a great play by
• 20:38
Speaker 1: him individually. Like he said, he saw the guard pull,
• 20:41
Speaker 1: so he immediately tried to cross the guy that was
• 20:43
Speaker 1: trying to block him, which he did.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: Successfully and made the play.
• 20:46
Speaker 1: And it was a big play for him, obviously, but
• 20:49
Speaker 1: to have the energy and the wherewithal to do that
• 20:51
  Speaker 1: that late in.
• 20:52
Speaker 2: The game was big.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: You may have noticed some of the edge rusher rotation,
• 21:00
Speaker 1: and Arnold Abacate played 40% of the defensive snaps, but
• 21:04
  Speaker 1: only 12 snaps for A.J.
• 21:05
  Speaker 2: Epinesa, who's a veteran.
• 21:06
Speaker 1: And Vic Fangio explained what factored into that. It wasn't
• 21:09
Speaker 1: necessarily part of the plan.
• 21:11
  Speaker 2: He said A.J.
• 21:12
Speaker 1: Got a little ding during the game, I think a
• 21:14
Speaker 1: little bit, which played a part in that. Staying on
• 21:18
Speaker 1: the edge rusher group, Vic spoke about the pressure in
• 21:22
Speaker 1: that game. Specifically, did you get the pressure you wanted
• 21:25
Speaker 1: to see? He said, I thought our pass rush overall
• 21:28
Speaker 1: with our guys that mainly rushed the passer was inconsistent
• 21:31
Speaker 1: and really wasn't good enough. The follow-up was, are there
• 21:35
Speaker 1: any theories as to why? He says, there's a lot
• 21:38
Speaker 1: of reasons here and there. Mobile quarterback plays into that.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: We just didn't win enough of our one-on-ones across the board.
• 21:46
Speaker 1: So there was Vic Fangio. Michael Clay spoke about Braden Mann,
• 21:50
Speaker 1: he spoke about Darius Cooper, had some good things to
• 21:53
Speaker 1: say about Darius Cooper and some of the players that
• 21:57
Speaker 1: what it says about them that they're able to kind
• 22:00
Speaker 1: of step in and fill the voids of so many
• 22:02
Speaker 1: impactful special teams players who have left the Eagles during
• 22:06
Speaker 1: Michael Clay's tenure. And I think he mentioned with Britton Covey,
• 22:11
Speaker 1: he said, keep your feet on the ground. The ground
• 22:13
Speaker 1: is your friend. You remember, of course, Britton Covey got
• 22:16
Speaker 1: tagged pretty hard by Commander of Safety Tyler Owens, that
• 22:21
Speaker 1: clip has sort of gone viral. The play in which
• 22:25
Speaker 1: he was able to disengage pretty forcefully from the two
• 22:28
Speaker 1: vice players, Jonathan Jones and Darius Cooper, to get down
• 22:32
Speaker 1: the field. And then, of course, he was a heat-seeking
• 22:35
Speaker 1: missile and Britton Covey leaves his feet and Tyler Owens
• 22:38
Speaker 1: was there to drop him. I think if Britton hadn't
• 22:41
Speaker 1: left his feet, it may not have looked as bad.
• 22:43
Speaker 1: as it ordinarily does, but man, does Britton take a
• 22:46
Speaker 1: lot of hits in the return game and just keeps
• 22:48
Speaker 1: getting up. That's another guy that is tough as nails.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: A lot of the DNA, I would say, on special
• 22:56
Speaker 1: teams is you have.
• 22:57
Speaker 2: To be wired a little bit differently.
• 22:59
Speaker 1: Michael Clay has alluded to that in the past, and
• 23:04
Speaker 1: Britton Covey is an example of that. I think in
• 23:06
Speaker 1: the past you look at Cameron Latu, you look at
• 23:08
  Speaker 1: Keely Ringo.
• 23:09
Speaker 2: Will Shipley. They're fearless guys out there.
• 23:12
Speaker 1: And I know that special teams is probably a facet
• 23:14
Speaker 1: of the game that doesn't interest many of you out there,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: but that was a key component for the Eagles being
• 23:19
Speaker 1: able to pull off that win Sunday with Braden Mann
• 23:22
Speaker 1: dropping four punts inside the 20, with Darius Cooper making
• 23:25
Speaker 1: four stops and really helping field position, with Jake Elliott
• 23:30
Speaker 1: delivering in his opportunities. I think there's just a lot
• 23:35
Speaker 1: to go around and it takes, you know, you often
• 23:37
Speaker 1: hear Nick Sirianni say this, it's football is the greatest
• 23:40
Speaker 1: team sport and not to sound cliche, but that's, that's
• 23:44
Speaker 1: what you saw on Sunday. And it took all three
• 23:46
Speaker 1: phases of the game for the Eagles to be able
• 23:48
Speaker 1: to get it done. And I always really like hearing
• 23:50
Speaker 1: what Michael Clay has to say, provides a unique perspective
• 23:53
Speaker 1: into the special teams game. And I think Darius Cooper, we,
• 23:58
Speaker 1: we talked a lot about the summer that he had.
• 24:00
Speaker 1: I spoke to him after the game and, He talked
• 24:03
Speaker 1: a lot about mentality and how Gunnar is such a
• 24:06
Speaker 1: tough position to play. But for Darius Cooper, someone who
• 24:10
Speaker 1: really lit it up in training camp. He was a
• 24:14
Speaker 1: dominant player for about a week there. Of course, he
• 24:16
Speaker 1: had the big summer that got him a roster spot
• 24:19
Speaker 1: as an undrafted free agent out of Tarleton State.
• 24:21
  Speaker 2: But to.
• 24:23
Speaker 1: embrace the role in the way that he has and
• 24:25
Speaker 1: really take to it. And I even mentioned this to him.
• 24:28
Speaker 1: I talked to him off to the side very quickly
• 24:30
Speaker 1: after the game, and I said, I think I know,
• 24:32
Speaker 1: I think talking to you over the past year or so,
• 24:35
Speaker 1: I have an idea of how you're going to answer this,
• 24:37
Speaker 1: but how did you go about approaching special teams and
• 24:42
Speaker 1: embracing this opportunity that probably isn't what you envisioned before?
• 24:48
Speaker 1: coming out of training camp, and he said, whatever the
• 24:49
Speaker 1: team needs me to do, I'm there for it.
• 24:51
  Speaker 2: I'm going to give 110%.
• 24:52
Speaker 1: That sort of personifies what Nick Sirianni looks for in
• 24:57
  Speaker 1: his players.
• 24:58
  Speaker 2: It really, I.
• 25:01
Speaker 1: Think, speaks to Darius Cooper's character, and I've talked a
• 25:04
Speaker 1: lot about Darius Cooper's character over the past year. Just
• 25:08
Speaker 1: an upstanding player. a true professional that has really taken
• 25:13
Speaker 1: to this role. And he mentioned he's excited to see
• 25:15
Speaker 1: what him and Keely can do in that gunner role
• 25:18
Speaker 1: for the rest of the season.
• 25:20
Speaker 2: And it takes a.
• 25:21
Speaker 1: Certain, a certain mindset, a certain, a certain character makeup
• 25:28
Speaker 1: to look at a situation that probably didn't go the
• 25:31
Speaker 1: way that you wanted.
• 25:32
Speaker 2: He's not going to see a lot of targets.
• 25:34
Speaker 1: He's not going to play a lot of receiver and,
• 25:36
Speaker 1: But he has an opportunity to contribute to this football
• 25:38
Speaker 1: team in a big way. And he sort of took
• 25:41
Speaker 1: that and ran with it. And you saw that on Sunday.
• 25:43
Speaker 1: So just something that I find really interesting, just as
• 25:48
Speaker 1: an aside here. But you often see that with a
• 25:50
Speaker 1: lot of the Eagles players. Look at Jalen Carter. Look
• 25:52
Speaker 1: at Reek Wollin. Look at a lot of these players
• 25:55
Speaker 1: who are helping out on special teams. There's just a
• 25:58
Speaker 1: full commitment to doing whatever the team needs on game
• 26:02
Speaker 1: day to be successful and putting personal– stats, personal pride,
• 26:07
Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it aside for the greater good.
• 26:10
Speaker 1: And I think that's a successful recipe for a winning program.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this episode of the
• 26:17
Speaker 1: Checo Daily. I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all
• 26:20
Speaker 1: on the next one.
