- 0:07The Chicago Bears faced the San Francisco 49ers at Kizar Stadium for week 6 of the 1953 NFL season on Sunday, November 1st.
- 0:16This game featured two of the pioneers in the passing game, George Blanda versus Y.A. Tittle.
- 0:22The Bears were struggling in 1953 under George Hallis in his 34th season as head coach, GM, and owner.
- 0:29They gave the starting quarterback job to George Blanda to start this season. He would go on to play in the NFL for another 23 years.
- 0:36The 49ers were in their fourth year in the NFL, and they were coached by Buck Shaw, who had led the team since their existence in the All-American Football Conference in the late 1940s.
- 0:45The AAFC folded in 1950 after their top two teams, the Cleveland Browns and the 49ers, joined the NFL.
- 0:53San Francisco was a strong team in the All-American Football Conference, but struggled after transferring to the NFL in 1950.
- 1:00But after the AAFC folded, many of their top talent entered the NFL draft, and that's when Coach Shaw jumped on the chance to acquire quarterback Y.A. Tittle.
- 1:08Unfortunately, this audio recording is only a partial broadcast, but it is one of the earliest NFL games on radio that still exists.
- 1:15We believe it's from the Chicago radio announcer, Bud Foster, but it's not clearly identified during this broadcast.
- 1:21The recording appears to start sometime early in the first quarter, with the 49ers leading 7-0.
- 1:26Fortunately, the rest of the broadcast is not necessarily cut off, but rather highly edited to only include many of the key plays.
- 1:32Nevertheless, it's pretty fun to listen to an early 1950s NFL football game involving two future Hall of Fame gunslingers.
- 2:02...the left side, he gets away with the tackle on the 40, heads back to the inside, he's down on the 15, and he's spun around.
- 2:07He couldn't get away from the tackle of George Conn, who finally kneeled McElhaney right on the 50-yard line for a 12-yard gain.
- 2:13And it's now his San Francisco with first and 10 squarely on the 50-yard line.
- 2:17...spanking wide to the right now. Why Tittle with that birdcage mask to protect that shattered cheekbone.
- 2:22Looking all around, now hands under center as he barks the signal.
- 2:25The Bears up into an eighth-man line, and here's McElhaney over left tackle, finds a little hole, hurdles over the 45, rolls up in a heap on the 44-yard line.
- 2:31...on the 44-yard line of Chicago, with a handkerchiefs all over the field.
- 2:34And there is an offside penalty we feel quite sure coming up against San Francisco's 49ers, which will take the ball back to their 45-yard line of the Bears, except the penalty, and they do.
- 2:43It's back to the 45 of San Francisco.
- 2:46Down will go over, first down, 15 to go.
- 2:48The deformation boy goes back, fires over the middle, it's caught by Solton.
- 2:51He's killing his feet, stumbling around, but he's finally knocked down flat by Don Kent.
- 2:55The safety man of the Chicago Bears stopping him right on the 48-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 3:00Solton is splitting wide to the right.
- 3:02Hugh McElhaney moves on the inside to flank in there.
- 3:04The man covering him is Dick Hensley, a defensive ender.
- 3:08Tittle barking a long count this time.
- 3:09Hands it off, and Perry hits over the center, rolls over and over to the 45-yard line of the Chicago Bears, picking up almost two yards.
- 3:16Whistle may have blown on about the 46.
- 3:17He's still seated right on squarely on the bare 45.
- 3:20Now gets to his feet.
- 3:21He was tripped up in the play by Fred Williams, a tremendous large tackle who formerly came from Arkansas.
- 3:27Williams has 250 to pass.
- 3:29Drops back to the 46, down over the middle.
- 3:31Billy Wilson's got it on the 20-yard line, and he's down on the 18-yard line.
- 3:35Don Kent making it in there once again for the Chicago Bears.
- 3:39So Billy Wilson gets down there.
- 3:40It's why Tittle firing with all his old aplomb and their inaccuracy, hitting him right squarely between the eyes.
- 3:46Ball was actually caught on about the 24-yard line.
- 3:50Billy Wilson took a couple of fast drives, was hit, diving for additional yardage, and finally is nailed down on the 18-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 3:58Mike McElhane on the outside.
- 3:59Here's the handoff.
- 4:00Perry goes over left tackle, but he gets nowhere.
- 4:02His head sprinkle comes in from that defensive right end and gets a hold of Perry and drags him down hard right on the line of scrimmage.
- 4:08You may have had a half a yard, but I don't believe you did.
- 4:10Way back to fast.
- 4:11Fires down there.
- 4:12Billy Wilson has it not run out of his hands by Don Kent on the 5-yard line.
- 4:15Billy Wilson was running latterly across that 5 toward the far sideline strip, and Don Kent reached around and slapped him just before getting into Wilson's hands.
- 4:23Billy Johnson gets it back to Tittle.
- 4:24He fades to pass way back to 27 down over the center to Billy Wilson.
- 4:28He gets right by Don Kent, the safety man who was out there trying to guard him, and the 49ers score their second touchdown in the first nine minutes of this football game.
- 4:37That was why Tittle on an 18-yard pass to Billy Wilson to make it 13-0, San Francisco leading the Chicago Bears.
- 4:46Backs sold out, boots out of powers old.
- 4:48It's good.
- 4:49And the score of the San Francisco 49ers, 14.
- 4:53The Chicago Bears, nothing.
- 4:55Now it's time here for just a moment.
- 4:57Let's take that time for Roy's story.
- 4:59Nice to show him.
- 5:04It's high, end over end, carrying right down toward the upright.
- 5:07And the ball's dropped by Macon right in front of the goal post.
- 5:10Holds out of it just about a yard or two behind the goal line.
- 5:13So the Bears will take the ball out of the middle on 20-yard line.
- 5:16Swing pass comes out to Billy Stone.
- 5:17He's up over the 20.
- 5:18Clips off a tackle this time by Don Berkeley.
- 5:20He's pulling the ball hard on the 29-yard line of the Bears.
- 5:23Good for a nine-yard gain.
- 5:24Billy Flanks left.
- 5:25Bill McCall split in wide to the right.
- 5:26Swing pass again out to Dewey or Stone.
- 5:29Up over the 30s, down the 33-yard line by Joe Arenas, who is playing the defensive right halfback spot now.
- 5:35First 33, first and 10 to go.
- 5:37The same formation.
- 5:38McCall split wide toward the far side on the 32-yard line.
- 5:41And here's Blanda handing it off.
- 5:42And over the center comes Stone on a cross-bucket to the 36-yard line.
- 5:45That's where he has finally stopped.
- 5:47Quarter, Detroit Lions, 10.
- 5:49Los Angeles Rams, nothing.
- 5:54This time Blanda pack-pedals all the way to the 25.
- 5:56Throws downfield and it's caught.
- 5:58And stepping into the sideline on the play is Johnny Hoffman.
- 6:00And let's see whether he went out of bounds or not against the sideline stripe right down here in front of us.
- 6:04His foot was mighty close to it.
- 6:06He did not.
- 6:07And it was Don Burke and Joe Arenas finally making the tackle on the San Francisco 47-yard line.
- 6:12For the Chicago Bears.
- 6:13And Blanda again turns and goes back to pass.
- 6:15Throws the screen past to Morrison, he's got it on the 48, runs the 50 down the 45 of San Francisco.
- 6:20Tackle on the 43 and drops on about the 42-yard line.
- 6:23Fades to pass again, throws again out here, caught by Stone.
- 6:26He drops the ball as he's starting to run right on the 40-yard line.
- 6:29Billy Stone coming out here.
- 6:31That ball evidently a little slippery.
- 6:32Just found it right off his hands and fell incomplete.
- 6:34Down over the ball, former college player.
- 6:36The Bears into a tight balance line this time.
- 6:39No spread.
- 6:40The handoff goes this time to Morrison.
- 6:41He tries to bang his way over the center of that line.
- 6:43And he's down to about the 37-yard line.
- 6:46Blanda fading to pass, throws the swing again out there and it's dropped.
- 6:50It's a little bit short this time to Billy Stone.
- 6:52Not his fault.
- 6:53As Blanda backpedaling fast, was trying to get out of the grasp of Charlie Paul.
- 6:57The defensive right end.
- 6:58And I believe there's going to be a penalty coming up against the Chicago Bears.
- 7:01That's the way the headlinesman is pointing at it by him.
- 7:04Let's see the 49ers will accept or refuse the penalty.
- 7:06Backfield in motion penalty it is.
- 7:08And refused by San Francisco.
- 7:10The ball remains on the 49 or 37-yard line.
- 7:13Right off the right, Dooley flanking toward the left again.
- 7:17San Francisco into a six-man line.
- 7:19Blanda fading to pass way, way back he goes.
- 7:21Throws a long downfield pass and it is caught.
- 7:24And the receivers throw in the bounds on the 18-yard line.
- 7:26This time catching that ball over to Jimmy Dooley who was down and out to the sidelines that time.
- 7:32And Jordan is the halfback throwing him out of bounds on San Francisco's 17-yard line.
- 7:36Again, Dooley flanks just outside the offensive left end.
- 7:40Bill Whiteken, Blanda taking the air again, fades the pass.
- 7:43Looks for McCall way down the corner and it is broken up incomplete in the end zone.
- 7:47Breaking that one up was Hardy Brown and also Rex Berry.
- 7:50McCall slipped way wide this time and Blanda again is going to take to the air.
- 7:53Fades, throws a swing pass to Morris.
- 7:54He's got on the 22, down on the 20, down the 15, down the 10.
- 7:57Hit hard and throw in the 10-yard of San Francisco.
- 8:00Short of a first down by maybe three yards.
- 8:03And off goes this time with a reverse play and Johnny Hoffman carries down almost for a first down to about the 18-yard line of San Francisco.
- 8:11Going to be very close to the first down.
- 8:13The tackler, big Charlie Powell and also Joe Manley.
- 8:16And at the bottom of the pile, the safety man, Fred Bruni, came charging in there fast.
- 8:20Let's see if a first down has been made.
- 8:22That was a big play, third down and it was three to go.
- 8:25Now the chain gang boys are coming on in to make the measurement.
- 8:28Looks to be a little bit short in here right now.
- 8:30We can peer through the officials legs to see the lead pole.
- 8:33It is short by about a half a yard.
- 8:36So it's fourth down and we'll call it one yard to go on the San Francisco eight-yard line.
- 8:41Three backs of rest and a close tee.
- 8:43Hand off, smash in there this time and let's see if he made it or not.
- 8:46Carrying on that last play with a full back, Johnny Dutley.
- 8:50Tried right at the center of the line and boy it is going to be close.
- 8:53Let's see the 49ers, Karapela, Mahalik, Domalini have been able to hold him out in there.
- 8:58Boy they're uncovering an awful squirming pile of football players who are trying to get loose in that pile.
- 9:04That was Dutley the full back on a straight away smash in the line.
- 9:08It's going to be mighty close.
- 9:09Again, now the chain gang comes out of the field.
- 9:12Here's the measurement being made.
- 9:15Big George Connor the captain of the Bears looking it over.
- 9:18And it's first down for the Chicago Bears on the San Francisco seven-yard line and they just made it by inches.
- 9:24The turn this time to hand off, Morrison it's right tackled him, down he goes.
- 9:28Hardy Brown came in there and felt that he had parted.
- 9:31Hardy Brown and Rex Berry, Curly Morrison trying to hurtle over his own right tackle spot.
- 9:35Was really chilled on that last one.
- 9:38Man oh man he shook his head a little bit as he ran back toward that huddle.
- 9:41He stowed his feet out of a tight tee.
- 9:44Here's the double fake, playing the back, shoots it past the end zone.
- 9:46It's cut for a touchdown and grabbing it's Phil McCall formerly of Stanford.
- 9:51Phil McCall for a touchdown for the Chicago Bears and the score is now 14 to 6 in favor of San Francisco here in the first quarter.
- 9:58Just 25 seconds of playing time remaining in the first period.
- 10:02So George Bland on those little short passes here and one especially long one caught by Jimmy DeLeo's engineers, the George Hallis crew.
- 10:10Right straight down the field after San Francisco went into a 14 to nothing lead.
- 10:14Place down Brandon Boots and that one is through them and the score is now the San Francisco 40 enters 14 the Chicago Bears 7.
- 10:23It's a wobbling kick off the side of the toe bouncing down taken by Macklin in the 3s back to the 5 to 10.
- 10:31Running up the middle of the 15, puts on a burst of speed in the 20, hit with a helmet tackle in the 30 and brought down Squirrelly on the 30 yard line.
- 10:37And sounding the end of the first quarter here at San Francisco's Kizar Stadium and with the gun ending the first quarter of play the score on the Pergemeister scoreboard.
- 10:46The San Francisco 40 enters 14 the Chicago Bears 7.
- 10:52Way down with short passes to get on the scoreboard.
- 10:57Y.A. Tittle at quarter now, Franks Macklinney toward the left.
- 11:0040 enters moving from our right to our left offensively.
- 11:02They're into a balanced line but a flanking back to the left. Tittle is on back to pass.
- 11:07Little protection throws downfield and it's in and it's bounced around.
- 11:09It's caught by Kint. He's on the 43 of San Francisco, the 40 to 35 down the far side.
- 11:1330 and he's run out of bounds on the San Francisco 22 or 23 yard line.
- 11:18That ball bounded off the hands of Livingston and finally into the hands of Kint who returned it all the way down to San Francisco.
- 11:2525 yard line is where they say he stepped out of bounds.
- 11:29So the Bears on that frantic pass that time with Y.A. Tittle being rushed had the ball bound around at the end and Kint grabbed it on out of bounds.
- 11:36It's the end and spreads the back wide to the right. He fades to pass.
- 11:38He throws downfield and it's completed. Taken right down on the field by Johnny Hoffman.
- 11:41He's knocked down on the 25 yard line after a 5 yard gain.
- 11:44Fading to pass throws a little swing pass caught out there by Billy Stoney who's on the 20.
- 11:48Comes to a stop, cuts in over the 15 all the way down to about the 10 yard line before he's dropped.
- 11:52An official running over the pile had his feet go off from under him and the soggy going.
- 11:56And he slipped down there at about the 11 yard line.
- 12:00It was Fred Bruni up there making the tackle on the play.
- 12:03He said it was over the ball. The Bears go into a balanced line.
- 12:06But this time they're splitting McCall wide to the right.
- 12:08Land again, turns hands the ball off to the second man.
- 12:10Stone's coming wide around right end of the 15 down the 10.
- 12:13He's down to the 5. He's in the end zone. It's 14 to 13.
- 12:16Billy Stone scores on a reverse play from the tee around right end.
- 12:20Circling over this side of the field and he went right into the end zone.
- 12:23He was not tackled and it's now 14 to 13.
- 12:2640-yarders leading in the early moments of this second quarter.
- 12:30It's the tying point and it's now on the Bergmeister scoreboard all tied up.
- 12:34The Chicago Bears 14. The San Francisco 49ers 14.
- 12:39Booting it off, it's a low bounding kick coming toward this side of the field.
- 12:44Bounces around the 10 yard line and rolls into the end zone.
- 12:46McElhaney has it bound on by him. Goes completely over the end zone.
- 12:49And it'll be 49ers bowling their own 20 yard line, first down and 10 yards to go.
- 12:53This is a spanking wide to the right.
- 12:55The Bears are up now into a 7 man line with an umbrella form.
- 12:59Back into a 6-1-4 defense. Tittle pitches out. Perry's going around right end.
- 13:03St. Clair gives him a little block but closing in on top of the pile to nail him down is Dick Hensley defensive left end.
- 13:08He moved up to about the 20 yard line, maybe the 21 and that'll be all.
- 13:12Now the split end. Blanking back toward the left.
- 13:14Here's the handoff. Over the center goes Perry.
- 13:16Hurdles down to about the 25 yard line, getting about 4 yards.
- 13:19That was a fake pitch out to Hugh McElhaney who's cutting over from the right halfback.
- 13:23Handoff went to the fullbacks, bearing straight ahead down the center of the line.
- 13:27Went to about the 25 yard line. We'll call it third now.
- 13:30And it'll be 5 yards to go.
- 13:32Inside is Arenas. The rest of the line balanced up.
- 13:34Two backs in behind. Y.A. Tittle turns pitches out quickly.
- 13:36McElhaney's around right end, the 25 at the 30.
- 13:38He's a 35. He's all the way to 40.
- 13:40He's struggling for additional yard. He's toward the sideline.
- 13:43And he's held standing up straight on the San Francisco 44 yard line of the far center of the field.
- 13:48And he was caught up with by the Chicago Bears.
- 13:51S.J. Whitman, their defensive left halfback.
- 13:54Anderson comes over from the right halfback to cover him.
- 13:56Tittle's fading back to pass. Goes back down the middle of pocket.
- 13:58Throws and the ball partially deflected. His arm was hit.
- 14:01And Tittle was knocked down on the play. His bearing through was Wayne Hanson, the middle guard of the Chicago Bears.
- 14:06His arm was bent just a little bit in there as he threw that ball.
- 14:10And he's the left hand to arenas over right tackle. He finds a little tiny hole.
- 14:13And that's all he's able to go. A little bit of yardage.
- 14:15About two yards. Moving into the 46 yard line.
- 14:18It's a balanced line. Kind of loosely spaced.
- 14:21Tittle's fading way back to pass. Looking for that blocking hole.
- 14:23He's on the ball. Runs the right.
- 14:24Throws a long moving pass downfield for Wilson.
- 14:26And it's intercepted.
- 14:28Taken by Whitman way back in his own 18. He's back in his bear 20 at the 25.
- 14:31He's took 12 a tackle in the 30. Back to 35.
- 14:33Towards the side of the field. Up the middle of 40.
- 14:35To the 45. To the bear 48.
- 14:37Before he's dragged down by St. Clair.
- 14:39Flanking to the left. Land under center.
- 14:41Quarterback turns. Hands on a trap.
- 14:43Morrison heads to the outside.
- 14:44And Nomalini grabs him and throws him on the 44.
- 14:46Leo Nomalini who was weighing in there.
- 14:49Just like a great big grizzly bear for that play to come at him.
- 14:52Morrison came through there.
- 14:53Attempted trap. Headed to the outside.
- 14:55And boom. Nomalini came through there and grabbed a hold of him.
- 14:57All splits off the right end by three yards.
- 14:59Flanking left. Duly again.
- 15:00Flan the face to pass.
- 15:01Backs all the way up to the bear 37.
- 15:03Goes out there and it's caught.
- 15:04Taken by Duly.
- 15:05He's thrown by Jorvinas on San Francisco's 44 yard line.
- 15:08He's short of a first down by about two possibly three yards.
- 15:12For the Bears once more.
- 15:13As Blanders leads them up in all kinds of formations.
- 15:15Hands the ball.
- 15:16The second man's stone is over for a first down.
- 15:17The 40. To the 39.
- 15:19He's caught and held standing up and finally wrestled down.
- 15:21Attempts the 39. Back to the 50.
- 15:23Throws along one great way downfield.
- 15:25And it's incomplete on the two yard line of San Francisco.
- 15:27Jorvinas was struggling along there to get a hold of that ball.
- 15:30It was way overthrown intended for Bill McCall or Jim Duly rather.
- 15:33And it takes it under center and fades again to take to the air.
- 15:36Throws the screen out there and it's caught by Hoffman.
- 15:38He's hit by Burke and he's thrown for about a three yard loss on the 42 or 43 yard line.
- 15:43Back he throws and it's caught and out of bounds on the 33 yard line.
- 15:47Again it was Jimmy Duly catching over there on the San Francisco 33.
- 15:51And driven out of bounds right at that point.
- 15:53That's where it's placed in.
- 15:55It's going to be short of a first down.
- 15:56It'll be fourth and about three yards to go.
- 15:58Donald holding right on the 40.
- 16:00There it's snapped.
- 16:01Placed down. There's the boot by Blander.
- 16:02It looks pretty good. It's no good.
- 16:04Missed the upright off to this right hand side.
- 16:06The score remains on the Burgermeister scoreboard.
- 16:09The 49ers 14.
- 16:11Chicago Bears 14.
- 16:13On the left against this near sideline strike.
- 16:15YA turns. Fires out.
- 16:16McElhaney grabs it on the 20 yard line.
- 16:18Bouncing around on his feet.
- 16:19Still on his feet.
- 16:20Struggling and it gets him to the 24 yard line.
- 16:22And the Bears overpower him at that point.
- 16:24Kent was in there.
- 16:25Sprinkle was in there.
- 16:26Fullback.
- 16:27Arena's the left half back.
- 16:28Tittle way behind that center.
- 16:29Turns or parries down over the middle.
- 16:31Struggling up to about the 29 yard line before he's nailed down by George Conham.
- 16:35And by Dick Hensley.
- 16:36And on the outside he's way back there.
- 16:38Tackles.
- 16:39Slips off.
- 16:40Up with the 30 for first time.
- 16:41The 35 and out of bounds.
- 16:42San Francisco's 36.
- 16:44Arenas who was nailed in there.
- 16:45Definitely.
- 16:46So it would seem.
- 16:47And we'll get that would be tackled.
- 16:49The Chicago Bears who couldn't hang on.
- 16:50It was S.J. Whitman, the defensive left half back.
- 16:52Still have an eight man lineup there.
- 16:54If you're looking at that way.
- 16:55Tittle fires out.
- 16:56It's caught by McElhaney.
- 16:57Zigzags one way and then the other.
- 16:58Head down.
- 16:59Bucks up to about the 39 yard line.
- 17:00There he was stopped by Dick Hensley and by S.J. Whitman again.
- 17:03Gives it off to second man Shevarum.
- 17:04Over the center line.
- 17:05The 40, the 45, the 46.
- 17:07Before Shevarum on the quick opener is finally brought down by Hensley again.
- 17:11And also by Johnny Hilwig.
- 17:12The middle guard of the Chicago Bears.
- 17:15He's way in close up into that eight man line for the Bears.
- 17:17Tittle fakes.
- 17:18Holds our way back.
- 17:19Long time.
- 17:20Throws downfield for Stilthall.
- 17:21And he's got it.
- 17:22He's got it.
- 17:2325 yard run for the Bears.
- 17:24Into his hands.
- 17:25Tried to pull it into his chest.
- 17:26And it slithered right through.
- 17:27And fell on the 20 yard line.
- 17:29The second and 10 fades to pass once more.
- 17:31A little bit of protection.
- 17:32Finds a hole.
- 17:33Runs right down the middle.
- 17:34The 45, the 50.
- 17:35Pickens Tittle to the Bear.
- 17:3645.
- 17:37Circles one tackle and he's right down the 42 yard line.
- 17:39Why?
- 17:40Tittle was time running right straight down the center.
- 17:42And there's a dog on the field.
- 17:43And it was running a little interference for him.
- 17:46And now it's the backfield judge who is turning, picking up this little fuzzy dog and taking
- 17:51him off.
- 17:52There's Tittle.
- 17:53Had a lot of company coming downfield with the Bear 41 yard line.
- 17:5514 to 14 all-tide football game.
- 17:58Tittle again flanks Shabaram to the left.
- 17:59Hands off, parries over right guard.
- 18:00He's going his feet to the 35 yard line.
- 18:03Shabaram goes over guard on a cross buck and he scrambles down about the 32 yard line.
- 18:08And I believe that's going to be good enough for a first down.
- 18:10They may have to call it the chain game to make a measurement.
- 18:12Pete Shabaram falling backwards right into that 30 yard line.
- 18:15Right tackle all the way down to the 25 yard line before he's finally nailed.
- 18:19A quick opening play to the right halfback.
- 18:21And a beautiful hole opened up by Bob St. Claren.
- 18:23Set McElhaney to a first down on the Bear.
- 18:2625 yard line.
- 18:28Tittle spreads so tall off that left end.
- 18:30Barks out the signals.
- 18:31Turns, fakes to Shabaram.
- 18:32Goes on back.
- 18:33Pete gives him a block.
- 18:34He throws out the flat.
- 18:35McElhaney kicks on the 20.
- 18:36Touchback on the inside.
- 18:37Back on the 20 to the 15.
- 18:38Tackle on the 15.
- 18:39Drop down on the 12 yard line of Chicago.
- 18:41And Tittle turns and fades the pass.
- 18:43Goes back to the Bear 20.
- 18:44Throws.
- 18:45McElhaney's got another seven.
- 18:46He's hit immediately on the seven yard line.
- 18:48And that's where he's brought down.
- 18:50Flanks out.
- 18:51Here's to McElhaney.
- 18:52McElhaney right straight down the middle of the five.
- 18:53He goes into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 18:55Here's McElhaney, wigwagging.
- 18:56Flings his way right through there.
- 18:57Goes in for a touchdown in the 49ers lead 20 to 14.
- 19:02Stretch gets it.
- 19:03Places it.
- 19:04Looted by Soltar.
- 19:05Good.
- 19:06The score now.
- 19:07The 49ers 21.
- 19:08The Chicago Bears 14.
- 19:09By Soltar it's a bad one.
- 19:10Bounces down the 20.
- 19:11Rolls around.
- 19:12Bounces off Connor.
- 19:13Pick up by Anderson on the 10 of the Bears.
- 19:14He's back to 15.
- 19:15He misses one tackle.
- 19:16Wigwags his way to the 25 and brought down the 26 yard line.
- 19:19He's planned to throw the long one downfield over the 20 yard line.
- 19:22He's planned to throw the long one downfield over the head this time of the big boy Jimmy
- 19:27Dooley.
- 19:28Half back wide to left.
- 19:29Looks out the right.
- 19:30Runs way back to his own 17.
- 19:31Throws a tremendous long pass.
- 19:32Way, way downfield and Barry intercepts back on the 49er 29.
- 19:33He's back to 25.
- 19:34The 30 up the middle of 35.
- 19:35For the outside in the 40 to 45 to the 15 to the Bear 47 yard line.
- 19:43He's finally held standing up as the Bear knocks the ball out of his hands.
- 19:47Rex Berry way back intercepted on the 29 yard line.
- 19:50He brought that ball back a distance of about 24 yards altogether.
- 19:55Good line about 15 yards into this near side of the field.
- 19:58Why Tittle turns to fade to pass.
- 20:00Goes way back.
- 20:01Now being rushed he fires one out here.
- 20:02It's caught by Sol Tony.
- 20:03Runs out of bounds on about the 38 yard line of Chicago.
- 20:06Times this afternoon.
- 20:07Hugh McElhaney flanks on the inside.
- 20:10Tittle parking signals.
- 20:11Turns.
- 20:12He's taken to the other end.
- 20:13He fades back.
- 20:14Good blocking by Perry.
- 20:15Throws a long one way downfield and it is bumped around and incomplete to Hugh McElhaney
- 20:19as Whitman hits his hands on it.
- 20:21McElhaney his hands on it.
- 20:22And it looks like Hugh was going to get it on the second bounce down in there for just
- 20:25a moment.
- 20:26But he couldn't hold on.
- 20:27Inside.
- 20:28Tittle again barks the signals.
- 20:29Fades to pass.
- 20:30Being rushed way back.
- 20:31Throws a screen.
- 20:32This time caught by Perry.
- 20:33He's running down the middle of the 40.
- 20:34On the outside of the 35 to the Bear.
- 20:35One blockers.
- 20:36What a beautiful block by Sol Tony.
- 20:37He's on the 25 to the 15.
- 20:38He's down to the 13 yard line of Chicago.
- 20:39A beautiful block by Sol Tony.
- 20:40That play with his handkerchief.
- 20:41Right in there where Sol Tony put on that block.
- 20:42He's got it.
- 20:43He's got it.
- 20:44He's got it.
- 20:45And it was caught by Sol Tony, that play with his handkerchief right in there where Sol
- 20:50Tony put on that block.
- 20:51Point of the foam.
- 20:52That block was laid on about the 23.
- 20:55And that moves it all the way up now to about the 38 yard line.
- 20:57They're placing it on the 39 yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 21:01On the play Tittle fades to pass.
- 21:03Goes down field.
- 21:04And it's caught right off the turn.
- 21:05This time by Sol Tony, runs on the bounds on the Bear 33.
- 21:08But there's a handkerchief on the play.
- 21:09Ten yards to go from that 33 yard line.
- 21:13again takes a snap from Billy Johnson fades way back sprinkle rushing and
- 21:16Tittle ducks the ball's Fulmer recovered by the Bears in the 42 yard line and
- 21:20and sprinkle went in there high with that arm right around Tittle's head and
- 21:23almost Torrey's helmet off and the ball was recovered as it was bounced out of
- 21:27Tittle's hands by Bill Bishop the tackle. Flanders back to pass looking left he
- 21:31throws downfield left and it's caught by Duleed runs over his pushed out of bounds
- 21:34on about the 50 yard line right in front of the 40 on the bench in the parts out
- 21:38of the field. Fades to pass again looks downfield gonna let loose a long one
- 21:42let's go all the way downfield it's incomplete and the pass was intended on
- 21:46the play for Johnny Hoffman. It's Hoffman either a full back or an end on that
- 21:50play but he's up there on the end sometimes and sometimes he's in the
- 21:53backfield running. Let's keep an eye on him all the time. He's a big boy.
- 21:58The clock stopped with about four seconds of play here in the first half
- 22:02balls placed on San Francisco's 44 yard line. Offside against San Francisco has
- 22:06been called and it'll now be down coming up. Goal by George Flander Tommy O'Connell
- 22:12holding and be booted from 51 yards away. It's placed it's booted there it goes
- 22:17way down but it is way wide too and it's no good. So the ball goes over the San
- 22:22Francisco end zone completely out of it. Flanders tried two field goals today one
- 22:26a 40 yarder this one would have been a 51 yarder had it been good. The ball
- 22:30comes back to San Francisco on its own 20 yard line and the clock has indicated
- 22:34that time has run out. So let's see if that gun sounded or misfired here in the
- 22:39damp weather and there's a possibility of that too. San Francisco is moving out
- 22:43its offensive team there may be just a second or two left to play. The clock is
- 22:46stopped with about one second now they moved it back with one second left to go
- 22:51here in this first half. 21-14 40-owners leading on the Berge scoreboard. San
- 22:57Francisco huddling back on its own five yard line. They've driven in there pretty
- 23:00deep at one time but a 15 yard offensive holding and penalty had placed them back
- 23:04on the bear 39 yard line and Tittle right by sprinkle dropped the ball and
- 23:09his bubble was recovered by Bill Bishop of the Bears. San Francisco lines it up
- 23:14now in the 20 yard line. Wilton split in wide to the right. Arena's flanking on
- 23:19the inside. Tittle sets his line hands are still in his hips. Clock hasn't
- 23:23started as yet. Waiting for the snap from center you'll have time for this play
- 23:26that's definite there he's got it he's fading to pass. Tittle goes way back to
- 23:30his 10 he throws and it's incomplete up on the 29 as the gun sounds. Bears are
- 23:36yelling about why Tittle intentionally grounding that ball. Tittle was knocked
- 23:39down by sprinkle and also by Hanson on that play again and so the first half of
- 23:44this game at Keysar Stadium in San Francisco has come to an end and after
- 23:4830 minutes of real offensive football this afternoon under very leaden skies
- 23:53here in the Bay Area. It's the San Francisco 49ers 21 the Chicago Bears 14
- 23:59at halftime. With a score on the Bergemeister scoreboard at the end of
- 24:05three quarters the San Francisco 49ers 21 the Chicago Bears 14.
- 24:13Gentlemen it is all over. We get the final gun and the 49ers for the first time since joining the
- 24:20National Football League in 1915 have beaten the George Hallis coach Chicago
- 24:26Bears here at San Francisco's Keysar Stadium they have beaten them before
- 24:29twice in Chicago but never here at Keysar Stadium so today they realize
- 24:34another ambition as they beat the Hallis coach Bears by a final score of 24 to 14
- 24:39and the 49ers seasonal record will now be four victories two losses the Los
- 24:44Angeles Rams defeated the Detroit Lions giving the Lions their second loss of
- 24:48the year their final score was 37 to 24 today at the Coliseum in Los Angeles so
- 24:54the Rams lead the Western Conference with five victories one loss the Detroit
- 24:58Lions and the 49ers are tied for second spot with four victories and two defeats
- 25:02now the 49ers can gear themselves up and take the LA Rams for the second time
- 25:08this year remember they beat them in that excruciatingly throwback game back
- 25:13on about October the 4th here in the same stadium 31 to 30 well soon it'll be
- 25:18a three-way tie again how long about this time next Sunday afternoon but
- 25:22that's a long way in the future seven days and about two and one half hours of
- 25:26football to be exact
