Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Darren. All right, well, the Knicks
• 0:08
Speaker 1: are up three to nothing, and that's what I say. Well,
• 0:11
Speaker 1: look up Alex Media to start this one with Lou Terminilo.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: Terminilo's take, Lou. In my lifetime, the Knicks have never
• 0:18
Speaker 1: been up three to zero in a series, and I
• 0:20
Speaker 1: can remember maybe you can bite you cannot.
• 0:23
Speaker 2: Well, in my lifetime they have, but my lifetime is
• 0:27
Speaker 2: longer than yours, Alex. Alex, thanks you for having me
• 0:30
Speaker 2: as always. Yeah, the Nicks are three legs up on
• 0:35
Speaker 2: the seventy sixers, and I mean they are going to
• 0:39
Speaker 2: playing great. The chemistry I think is better than ever.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: It was funny. We all thought Mike Brown was going
• 0:46
Speaker 1: to be out the door after this Hawks put up,
• 0:49
Speaker 1: came back from twelve down, But here we are two
• 0:52
Speaker 1: weeks later on the verge of go to the conference finals.
• 0:56
Speaker 2: Well it shows you that how crazy sports is. Yes,
• 1:00
Speaker 2: you're right. Two weeks ago and I knew the nick
• 1:03
Speaker 2: weren't going to lose that series. I didn't think they
• 1:06
Speaker 2: might have had to go seven if they were down
• 1:08
Speaker 2: two to one. But yes, Mike Brown was going to
• 1:11
Speaker 2: be out. The team was going to be broken up.
• 1:14
Speaker 2: You know all all this is happening, but shows you
• 1:18
Speaker 2: how you know how things change in sports so quickly.
• 1:23
Speaker 2: I mean, going into the season, the Knicks were considered
• 1:26
Speaker 2: to be the best team in the East, something that
• 1:29
Speaker 2: we had talked about earlier. You really can't gauge anything
• 1:33
Speaker 2: from an NBA regular season. The Knicks have definitely definitely
• 1:37
Speaker 2: put their foot on the gas pedal, raised their level
• 1:41
Speaker 2: in this series. Yes, they should beat these two teams
• 1:43
Speaker 2: that they've played. It's no upset better than them the
• 1:48
Speaker 2: seventy six ers. For all of their process over the
• 1:51
Speaker 2: last ten years, their process has done nothing. It shows
• 1:55
Speaker 2: what tanking. They tanked for three years they won ten games,
• 1:59
Speaker 2: they won eight eighteen games, they were nineteen games. They tanked.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: They had the number one pick or top three picks.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: Ben Simmons markel Foltz was drafted number one overall. Jalil
• 2:14
Speaker 2: Okaford was drafted number three from Duke. In the last decade,
• 2:18
Speaker 2: Embiid was drafted number three overall. Missed the first two
• 2:21
Speaker 2: years and the third yearly played thirty one games. And
• 2:24
Speaker 2: Embiid when he was healthy was a great town. But
• 2:28
Speaker 2: Alex he's never healthy and now he's a shell of
• 2:31
Speaker 2: what he was, they're done now, and I don't mean
• 2:33
Speaker 2: it for the series. Yeah, they've done in the series,
• 2:35
Speaker 2: but I don't know where they go. The Knicks did
• 2:38
Speaker 2: a great job. They knew that if they double team Maxie,
• 2:43
Speaker 2: who's had a bad series the next I've taken him
• 2:45
Speaker 2: out of the series by double Tamiam led by Bridges,
• 2:48
Speaker 2: who's playing his best basketball in his you know, two
• 2:54
Speaker 2: years as a Knick. So yeah, now they'll win it.
• 2:58
Speaker 2: They're gonna win the series. So they'll be playing probably
• 3:01
Speaker 2: Detroit in the finals. And as I pulled you, I
• 3:04
Speaker 2: think I think the Knicks matchup great with Detroit. They're
• 3:08
Speaker 2: more mature than Detroit.
• 3:12
Speaker 1: I really think sports cast. Look, I love that Sean
• 3:15
Speaker 1: Mick got some playing time finally this series, because he
• 3:18
Speaker 1: was kind of not their last series. I'm glad they're
• 3:20
Speaker 1: playing him, uh, you know, and then the Alvarados of
• 3:24
Speaker 1: the world, and and all these backup guys to the
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Bruns and the Hearts and the Obie. It's amazing how
• 3:31
Speaker 1: chemistry is happening here, as you say, because you know,
• 3:34
Speaker 1: definite Thivodeau would burn out all his guys. That's why
• 3:37
Speaker 1: by the end of the second round they'd be injured
• 3:40
Speaker 1: heading into the Conference finals. Two years in a row.
• 3:43
Speaker 1: By the way, I remind you, two years in a row,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: they didn't have a healthy heart healthy you know, Obie healthy,
• 3:50
Speaker 1: there's healthy that because they were all burned out. This
• 3:54
Speaker 1: is finally the system that's working, and I knew it would,
• 3:57
Speaker 1: but uh, I just want to see them beat the
• 4:00
Speaker 1: trade they were. They lost all the regular season. Well,
• 4:03
Speaker 1: first of all, they need to shut down the Sixers tomorrow.
• 4:06
Speaker 1: I do not want it to come back to the
• 4:08
Speaker 1: Garden after this momentum. I want to end it in Philly.
• 4:11
  Speaker 1: Why not, right?
• 4:12
Speaker 2: I mean, come on, Alex, you got it. When you
• 4:15
Speaker 2: have a chance to any series, you gotta end them,
• 4:18
Speaker 2: no matter whether you're up three to three, to two,
• 4:21
Speaker 2: three to one, three three nothing. You don't want to
• 4:24
Speaker 2: play an extra game if you don't have to, because
• 4:27
Speaker 2: you can get nicks cut, you know, nix and bruises,
• 4:31
Speaker 2: you can get hurt. I mean, with the Knicks up
• 4:34
Speaker 2: three nothing, even if Ananobe is ninety five percent healthy,
• 4:38
Speaker 2: I would not play them. There's no reason to play
• 4:41
Speaker 2: them tomorrow. I think the Knicks will will close them
• 4:45
Speaker 2: out tomorrow. You're right, you do not want to come
• 4:47
Speaker 2: back for Game five. If they do that, so be it.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: But you want to get these games over with as
• 4:53
Speaker 2: soon as possible. The Knicks will get a lengthy rest.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: Sometimes that hurts, sometimes it it helps, But you got
• 5:02
Speaker 2: to get the series over. You can't worry about the
• 5:04
Speaker 2: other series when that's gonna end, because I assume Cleveland
• 5:08
Speaker 2: will win at least one of the two games in Cleveland.
• 5:11
Speaker 2: And talk about an underachieving postseason team, the Cleveland Cavaliers,
• 5:16
Speaker 2: I mean, they've had you know, two years, what did
• 5:18
Speaker 2: they win over sixty games, and they just.
• 5:21
  Speaker 1: They that's unhearted. It's horrible.
• 5:24
Speaker 2: Like this, it's horrible.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: Eleven time All Star and he's like putting up almost nothing.
• 5:29
  Speaker 2: It's it's unbelievable to me, and it's it's not it's
• 5:32
Speaker 2: it is unbelievable. You're right, and this is not the
• 5:34
Speaker 2: first time he's done it. Obviously, he's had a lot
• 5:37
Speaker 2: of great regular season accomplishments and accolades, but his postseason
• 5:43
Speaker 2: that's what he's gonna be known for. His failure in postseason.
• 5:46
Speaker 1: Well, when he was with the Nets, you know, it
• 5:48
Speaker 1: was very weird because either he'd be injured or duramb
• 5:51
Speaker 1: be injured. No one was on the same court as
• 5:53
Speaker 1: the same None of those guys were on the same court.
• 5:55
Speaker 2: At the same and that killed and that's what killed
• 5:57
Speaker 2: the Nets and led to the breakup of the Nets.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: Who have let's see, let's tomorrow. I'm glad you brought
• 6:04
Speaker 2: the Nets. Tomorrow's a big, a big day for the
• 6:06
Speaker 2: Nets because to see where they're going to be drafting.
• 6:09
Speaker 2: Even though I'm I'm against tanking, they get they can't.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: They got to be in the top three tomorrow. If
• 6:15
Speaker 2: they get pushed back again, what did tanking accomplish? But
• 6:19
Speaker 2: we'll see. Uh this is this is the last year
• 6:22
Speaker 2: of tanking for them because they flip with Houston next year,
• 6:26
Speaker 2: Houston could take their pick. So I'm sure they don't
• 6:28
Speaker 2: want to be in the lottery next year. But and
• 6:31
Speaker 2: you know, next year they're going to be the new
• 6:33
Speaker 2: anti tanking rules rules. We'll see what they are. But
• 6:36
Speaker 2: getting back to the getting back to the Knicks, I mean,
• 6:38
Speaker 2: I think the Knicks and De Troy will be a
• 6:40
Speaker 2: good series. Detroit last year actually had you know, the
• 6:43
Speaker 2: experience to play them. But again I always use my
• 6:46
Speaker 2: four out of seven. I don't think Detroy could beat
• 6:50
Speaker 2: the Knicks four out of seven. I don't.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: Well. When he puts the team on his back every night,
• 6:56
Speaker 1: that's very tough to come back from every series.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: So I'm yeah, you're right. And Detroit is getting the
• 7:03
Speaker 2: secondary scoring. We had talked about the question of if
• 7:06
Speaker 2: they don't get secondary scoring. And Tobias Harris or why
• 7:09
Speaker 2: am never been a big fan of, has played very
• 7:12
Speaker 2: very well. I think he's had seven straight points, seven
• 7:15
Speaker 2: straight games excuse me, where he scored twenty plus points
• 7:20
Speaker 2: and he's had an impact on the game. So they
• 7:24
Speaker 2: need they're gonna need that to beat the Knicks. The
• 7:27
Speaker 2: one thing with the Knicks still, Karl Anthony Towns has
• 7:32
Speaker 2: to stay out of foul trouble. He was in foul
• 7:34
Speaker 2: trouble last night, and I mean last night the Knicks
• 7:37
Speaker 2: were gonna win. But against say Oklahoma City in the finals,
• 7:41
Speaker 2: if a Knicks want to extend that series to six
• 7:45
Speaker 2: or seven games, which I don't see why they can't.
• 7:48
Speaker 2: If Indiana did last year against Oklahoma City, the Knicks
• 7:52
Speaker 2: should be able to do that, even though Oklahoma City
• 7:54
Speaker 2: is really, really, really good. But Carl Anthony Towns has
• 7:58
Speaker 2: to stay out of foul trouble. He really does, and
• 8:01
Speaker 2: the Knicks are using their bench, like you said, which
• 8:04
Speaker 2: is something I haven't done in the past, and the
• 8:05
Speaker 2: Sixers have no bench. So I don't think anybody who
• 8:11
Speaker 2: roots for the Knicks, anybody who follows the Knicks, Knicks management,
• 8:15
Speaker 2: they gotta be one happy the way the Knicks have performed.
• 8:19
Speaker 2: And yes, the Knicks don't pick their opponents. Yes they're
• 8:21
Speaker 2: better in Atlanta and better than the Sixers, but they
• 8:25
Speaker 2: beat them. They put their they stomped on their on
• 8:32
Speaker 2: their necks, and that's what you gotta do. And really,
• 8:35
Speaker 2: the last the last six games, the six game play
• 8:39
Speaker 2: off winning streak, that's what they've done. I mean, really, Alex,
• 8:42
Speaker 2: these games havn't been close. You knew the Knicks win
• 8:45
Speaker 2: to win, you know, in the fourth quarter. I mean
• 8:48
Speaker 2: one game they won by fifty one points, another game
• 8:50
Speaker 2: they won by thirty nine, you know, in the sixth streak.
• 8:54
Speaker 2: So they've really been dominant, which is what you want
• 8:57
Speaker 2: to be at this stage in the postseason.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: I want to stay in the NBA playoffs for a second,
• 9:03
Speaker 1: because it looks like the Thumbder's gonna have a pathway
• 9:06
Speaker 1: to the finals again because they just they're dumbinant and
• 9:10
Speaker 1: look We know the Lakers don't have Luca, but I
• 9:14
Speaker 1: don't know where Lebron goes after this. This is really
• 9:16
Speaker 1: not a good series for you know, Lakers who still
• 9:19
Speaker 1: have Lebron. James almost like maybe this is the ending
• 9:23
Speaker 1: for him in LA. What do you think it could be?
• 9:26
Speaker 2: I mean as rumors that he'll play one more year,
• 9:28
Speaker 2: maybe go back to Cleveland as a swan song. As
• 9:31
Speaker 2: for his final year, he's still playing at a very
• 9:33
Speaker 2: high level, Alex he really is is Is he the
• 9:39
Speaker 2: best player in the league anymore? He's not, But Kenny's
• 9:42
Speaker 2: still play bad than most NBA players He's short had,
• 9:46
Speaker 2: And it's too bad that they don't have Luca. It
• 9:50
Speaker 2: would have been an interesting series. I think JJ Reddick
• 9:53
Speaker 2: has done a good job complaining about the officials the
• 9:56
Speaker 2: other night that the officials in the beat didn't beat
• 10:02
Speaker 2: the Lakers. Oklahoma City's superior team did so. But Red's
• 10:08
Speaker 2: done a good job. They have Luca as a centerpiece
• 10:11
Speaker 2: of their team. As far as far as Lebron goes,
• 10:15
Speaker 2: I assume he will either resign with the Lakers for
• 10:18
Speaker 2: one more year or or go to Cleveland. I can't
• 10:22
Speaker 2: see him going anywhere else. I can't see him going
• 10:25
  Speaker 2: to the Knicks or the Celtics. I can't. I can't.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: But Oklahoma City is going to get to the finals
• 10:31
Speaker 2: in all likelihood, but Alex, they're gonna have to go
• 10:34
Speaker 2: through San Antonio. And if you see how good and
• 10:38
Speaker 2: how athletic and how talented the San Antonio Spurs are,
• 10:45
Speaker 2: they're not gonna get swept by Oklahoma City. I mean,
• 10:48
Speaker 2: web Yami is fantastic, Wemby is I mean he had
• 10:53
Speaker 2: those twelve blocks the other night. Stephen Cassel from the
• 10:58
Speaker 2: Kid from Yukon twelve assists this is a very, very
• 11:02
Speaker 2: good team that's only going to get better. Their immaturity
• 11:06
Speaker 2: might might slow them down, lack of experience against Oklahoma City.
• 11:09
Speaker 2: But I think for the next five years it's gonna
• 11:12
Speaker 2: be Oklahoma City and San Antonio battling it out to
• 11:15
Speaker 2: see who gets to the finals. And if you're a
• 11:17
Speaker 2: Knicks fan, in my opinion, if you're a Knicks fan,
• 11:19
Speaker 2: and I'm not, but if you're a Knicks fan, you
• 11:22
Speaker 2: want san Antonio to beat Oklahoma City because I think
• 11:25
Speaker 2: the Knicks have a would have a more more than a.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: I think they might be favored against San Antonio. I
• 11:31
Speaker 2: do they might be or the it'll be close, they'll
• 11:34
Speaker 2: be they'll be underdogg.
• 11:35
Speaker 1: Again because of the experience, they'd be favored.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, yeah, it's gonna it's gonna be close. So
• 11:41
Speaker 2: but San Antonio, they're here to stay. They really are.
• 11:46
Speaker 1: It's they won a lot of but that is amazing
• 11:49
Speaker 1: how he's the pathway is for the Knicks to get
• 11:51
Speaker 1: to this next level of the finals. And remember I
• 11:54
Speaker 1: was only a little little one in ninety four and
• 11:58
Speaker 1: ninety nine. Though I remember ninety nine a little bit, by,
• 12:01
Speaker 1: I don't remember it that well. So this will be serious.
• 12:04
Speaker 1: But you know, the thing about the Spurs is Webby
• 12:07
Speaker 1: is just what was he six seven or something? No?
• 12:11
Speaker 2: What? Yeah? Absolutely yeah, And he's long, and he's athletic,
• 12:15
Speaker 2: and he could he could hit the three. I think
• 12:17
Speaker 2: he takes too many threes. That's just me. I think
• 12:20
Speaker 2: he takes too many threes. But you know, they got
• 12:24
Speaker 2: lucky in the lottery. You know, they drafted Dylan Harper.
• 12:28
Speaker 2: You know they got lucky. They moved up to the
• 12:32
Speaker 2: number two spot and to Dylan Harper, who has been
• 12:34
Speaker 2: a contributor for them, the kid from Jersey. They're good,
• 12:39
Speaker 2: they're good. You can't take them for granted, that's for sure.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: I mean, I think Oklahoma City will beat them, but
• 12:44
Speaker 2: Oklahoma City is not going to sweep them. They're not.
• 12:49
Speaker 1: No. I think that could go six or seven. But look,
• 12:52
Speaker 1: the Wolves are still good, so you never know what
• 12:53
Speaker 1: happens in that series. It should be San Antonio series though, right,
• 12:59
  Speaker 1: that's what we're looking at.
• 13:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, san Antonio should should finish show off Minnesota. Minnesota
• 13:07
Speaker 2: might win tomorrow and tie it up to two, and
• 13:10
Speaker 2: then it might go seven. It could go seven, but
• 13:13
Speaker 2: san Antonio and the end should come out on top.
• 13:17
Speaker 1: All right, Let's switch Gears of the Ice now, because
• 13:19
Speaker 1: I know our fans love to talk about the NHO
• 13:21
Speaker 1: and I thought the Carolina series going as I thought
• 13:25
Speaker 1: it would be the Buffalo series, I did not think
• 13:29
Speaker 1: they'd be losing at all, at least in the early
• 13:31
Speaker 1: stages to Montreal and Montreal might be the real deal.
• 13:34
Speaker 2: Louis Montreal is the real deal. Both of these teams
• 13:38
Speaker 2: are the real real deal. That's what makes this series
• 13:41
Speaker 2: so interesting. And see who's going to prevail. And last
• 13:47
Speaker 2: night with Montreal jumping all over Buffalo early in the game,
• 13:52
Speaker 2: and you know, going on to that easy victory. They're fast,
• 13:58
Speaker 2: you know, they and they haven't gotten anything out of
• 14:03
Speaker 2: you know, like Carl Cawfield. Yet nothing in these playoffs
• 14:07
Speaker 2: because obviously it's tougher to score in the playoffs, especially
• 14:10
Speaker 2: in the Eastern Conference style of play then in the
• 14:15
Speaker 2: regular season. But you know, they got Dopson back Montreal.
• 14:20
Speaker 2: Did you know. He's a terrific defenseman. And they getting
• 14:28
Speaker 2: great play, They getting great play from from their goaltender.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: And it's gonna go this. I'd be shocked if this
• 14:37
Speaker 2: doesn't go six or seven games, I really would. Now,
• 14:40
Speaker 2: the next two games are in Montreal. It's gonna be tough.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: But Buffalo won you know, three games in Boston. Now,
• 14:46
Speaker 2: Buffalo's power play, which I believe it or not, ended
• 14:49
Speaker 2: the regular season into that first round. Throughout that first
• 14:52
Speaker 2: round was one for forty three on their power play,
• 14:54
Speaker 2: and they got good power play players. They just were
• 14:58
Speaker 2: in slump. They were two three in the power play
• 15:00
Speaker 2: on the first game, and uh, they need they need
• 15:05
Speaker 2: to get that. I mean, uh, some of these young
• 15:08
Speaker 2: guys on on Buffalo, to Zach Benson and Josh Norris,
• 15:12
Speaker 2: have been really good. They're deep teams. These are two
• 15:14
Speaker 2: deep teams. This is this is the toughest series to pick, Alex.
• 15:19
Speaker 2: It really is. I mean it's that it's that close.
• 15:23
Speaker 2: One you know, one bounce of the puck, uh, you know,
• 15:27
Speaker 2: hits a chip in off the in the off the
• 15:29
Speaker 2: ice or off the the back the backboards, the end boards.
• 15:33
Speaker 2: I mean, that's how close it That's how close it is.
• 15:37
Speaker 2: This is this is a really intriguing series. Really, it
• 15:41
Speaker 2: really is. And I think it's gonna go six seven
• 15:45
Speaker 2: And I'm not even gonna pick a win here because
• 15:46
Speaker 2: I don't know, so I'm not even gonna try to
• 15:49
Speaker 2: try to uh to be uh uh An nostradamis on
• 15:54
Speaker 2: this or I'm not uh but uh. To the Philadelphia
• 15:58
Speaker 2: Carolina series, yes, you're right, it's gone basically the way
• 16:01
Speaker 2: I thought they had a chance. In that second game,
• 16:05
Speaker 2: you know, went to overtime. They dominated the overtime, but
• 16:08
Speaker 2: Carolina Carolina scored. The Canes are so hard to play,
• 16:16
Speaker 2: they really are. They They're the Canes. They're deep, they're confident,
• 16:21
Speaker 2: their style of play never changes. They and you know,
• 16:26
Speaker 2: everybody thinks that they're really not a great goal scoring team,
• 16:29
Speaker 2: but they had seven guys who scored twenty plus goals
• 16:33
Speaker 2: this year. And you know, you see the resurgence of
• 16:38
Speaker 2: Taylor Hall, a former MVP when he was with the Devils,
• 16:42
Speaker 2: has played very well for them. And if Freddie Anderson
• 16:46
Speaker 2: keeps playing goal like he's been playing, especially after having
• 16:51
Speaker 2: a down regular season, could they could be the in
• 16:56
Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup Final. But that you know that series,
• 17:00
Speaker 2: that series is over, maybe Philly will win you know,
• 17:03
Speaker 2: game four. But not a good time for Philadelphia's even
• 17:06
Speaker 2: though this has been unlike the Sixers, for the Flyers,
• 17:10
Speaker 2: this has been a positive year, a positive year for
• 17:14
  Speaker 2: the Flyers.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: They're gonna get like a whole stating, oh if the
• 17:17
Speaker 1: season over tonight, I mean they're still gonna get at.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: Yes they are. I mean they they are a good team.
• 17:23
Speaker 2: This is not like just sneaking into the playoffs where
• 17:27
Speaker 2: the veteran team that you know is not gonna go anywhere.
• 17:30
Speaker 2: But with Philadelphia, Buffalo, Montreal, uh, all these young teams
• 17:37
Speaker 2: in the East Alex for fans here in the New
• 17:41
Speaker 2: York area, the Devils, the Rangers in the Islanders are
• 17:44
Speaker 2: going to really have to fight hard to get back
• 17:48
Speaker 2: into these in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: Thing because in my lifetime, the Rangers always almost make
• 17:55
Speaker 1: the playoffs, so it's good.
• 17:56
  Speaker 2: It's it's gonna be. It's it's gonna be. This a
• 17:58
Speaker 2: very interesting offseason for the three local teams, that's for sure.
• 18:03
Speaker 2: I was surprised that Anaheim got boat raced last night
• 18:07
  Speaker 2: at home.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: I'm still very high on them because I want Prior
• 18:11
Speaker 1: to win the ship, but they're down two to one
• 18:14
Speaker 1: right now after the goal at Knights, and maybe that's
• 18:15
Speaker 1: an experience thing about.
• 18:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the first two Hey, Anaheim could have
• 18:21
Speaker 2: won the first two games they won, the second game
• 18:24
Speaker 2: they lost. They lost the first game on the controversial goal,
• 18:28
Speaker 2: a controversial decision and icing was not called. And you
• 18:36
Speaker 2: know the hybrid icing. They'll call it once whoever gets
• 18:40
Speaker 2: to the faceoff dot first, and this one it looked
• 18:44
Speaker 2: like it should have been icing. They didn't call it.
• 18:47
Speaker 2: The play continued and Vegas scored. Joel Quinville and the
• 18:55
Speaker 2: Anaheim bench were screaming before the goal was scored that
• 18:58
Speaker 2: it was that wasn't called icing. So again, you know
• 19:04
Speaker 2: the hybrid icing. It was a safety concern obviously used
• 19:09
Speaker 2: to have to touch the punk behind the goal line,
• 19:12
Speaker 2: and guys were getting smashed into the boards, and I've
• 19:14
Speaker 2: seen guys get badly injured. But maybe it's time to
• 19:17
Speaker 2: go to the no touch icing. As soon as the
• 19:19
Speaker 2: puckets over the over the end line, uh, then you know,
• 19:24
Speaker 2: blow the whistle. I've always been for no touch icing.
• 19:28
Speaker 2: But we'll see that. Vegas was very impressive last night.
• 19:34
Speaker 2: And then and uh they caught they caught the young
• 19:38
Speaker 2: ducks on their heels. And you know, last night they
• 19:42
Speaker 2: went they were an easy six to two. I thought
• 19:44
Speaker 2: Age might be catching up with Vegas. Maybe it is,
• 19:48
Speaker 2: but uh, they're still pretty good. And the other series,
• 19:55
Speaker 2: Colorado Minnesota. You got two great teams. But the other
• 19:59
Speaker 2: night Colorado, when they went up, they went up to nothing.
• 20:02
Speaker 2: At home, they were on a mission. Nathan McKinnon was
• 20:05
Speaker 2: on a mission. Cole mccarr was on was on a mission.
• 20:09
Speaker 2: I think I could be wrong watching the body language
• 20:12
Speaker 2: of McKinnon laying out people, including Quinn U's American gold medalist.
• 20:19
Speaker 2: I still think McKinnon has the chip on the shoulder
• 20:24
Speaker 2: of losing the gold medal game to the United States,
• 20:26
Speaker 2: and I think that's gonna draw. That's driving him even
• 20:29
Speaker 2: more to win the Stanley Cup, which I think they
• 20:31
Speaker 2: will do. So it's been it's been an interesting, been interesting.
• 20:38
Speaker 2: Colorado Minnesota gain Now that looks that looks like that
• 20:41
Speaker 2: series should go seven, but who knows, it may not.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: I mean that's how good Colorado looked these first two games.
• 20:48
Speaker 1: Well, we'll have to see what happens, all right, Louis
• 20:51
Speaker 1: uh I did bring them up with Branson and Ryan,
• 20:56
Speaker 1: but I'll bring up with you as well. A couple
• 20:57
Speaker 1: of other hockey notes. The Rangers firing all of Hartford's
• 21:01
Speaker 1: coaching staff. It's an unusual move, but maybe it's a
• 21:05
Speaker 1: signed there trying to really rep up and prevamp player development.
• 21:09
Speaker 1: What do you think player development?
• 21:11
Speaker 2: I definitely think that's what it is. I mean, you know,
• 21:18
Speaker 2: they need to get younger, and I think they want
• 21:21
Speaker 2: to accelerate the development of these players if they think
• 21:25
Speaker 2: these players aren't reaching their full potential. The Rangers are
• 21:29
Speaker 2: going to have the fifth pick in a draft this year.
• 21:32
Speaker 2: Unfortunately for them, they were supposed to pick third, but
• 21:37
Speaker 2: they got pushed down to by a cup by a
• 21:41
Speaker 2: couple of teams jumping ahead of them, including San Jose.
• 21:45
Speaker 2: By the way, San Jose another team that didn't make
• 21:48
Speaker 2: the playoffs. That's on the com in the Western Conference.
• 21:52
Speaker 2: They'll be probably a playoff team, just missed this year,
• 21:56
Speaker 2: probably will be next year. And they'll have the number
• 21:57
Speaker 2: two pick in the draft. They were supposed to pick No. Nine,
• 22:00
Speaker 2: so they jump seven spots. So will they trade that pick,
• 22:08
Speaker 2: will they use that pick?
• 22:10
  Speaker 1: You know?
• 22:10
Speaker 2: Will they trade that pick together, you know, a young
• 22:13
Speaker 2: veteran to help propel them that So that'll be interesting
• 22:17
Speaker 2: to see what what San Jose does. Toronto won the lottery.
• 22:23
Speaker 2: They're gonna take ninety nine percent, so they're gonna pick
• 22:26
Speaker 2: Gavin McKenna out of Penn State. Uh and uh yeah,
• 22:31
Speaker 2: but the Rangers. That's why the Rangers did it. They
• 22:34
Speaker 2: need to accelerate player development. I understand why.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: Yep. But then we'll talk about the loss of John
• 22:45
Speaker 1: Starling in a minute. But let let's put let's go
• 22:48
Speaker 1: to baseball real fast.
• 22:50
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: I'm not even worried, Like I feel like the Angs
• 22:52
Speaker 1: are gonna be on autopilot for a little bit and
• 22:55
Speaker 1: then I'll check it in with them a memorial that
• 22:56
Speaker 1: that's what it feels like right now. I know they
• 22:58
Speaker 1: lost pretty rough last night to Brewers, who were not
• 23:02
Speaker 1: the not the team they were a few years ago.
• 23:04
Speaker 1: But I'm not worried. Louis actually the first year in baseball.
• 23:08
Speaker 1: I'm not worried about it because things need to be
• 23:12
Speaker 1: rolling along for the inks. So we'll see.
• 23:14
Speaker 2: Yeah. No, a couple of things. The Yankees are very
• 23:17
Speaker 2: very good. They have they have outstanding starting pitching. They're
• 23:24
Speaker 2: going to win the division. They're probably they're going to
• 23:26
Speaker 2: be the one seat in all likelihood unless somebody gets hurt,
• 23:29
Speaker 2: you know, unless Judge runs through the wall at Dodger
• 23:31
Speaker 2: Stadium like you did a couple of years ago. But
• 23:35
Speaker 2: you know, thumbs down on the American League. The American
• 23:38
Speaker 2: League stinks, guys. I mean, there's no other way to
• 23:41
Speaker 2: say it unless somebody rises. You know, last year, Toronto
• 23:45
Speaker 2: rose the second half of the year and was pretty good,
• 23:47
Speaker 2: got to the World Series. But you know, you got
• 23:50
Speaker 2: the American League West, the American League Central. Those teams
• 23:53
Speaker 2: aren't really those teams aren't good. Last year there was
• 23:58
Speaker 2: a little bit of a boost with like I said, Toronto.
• 24:00
Speaker 2: The Red Sox were okay, but you know what, the Yankees.
• 24:07
Speaker 2: Toughest opponent's going to be the Yankees. They better, you know,
• 24:11
Speaker 2: if they get too overconfident or like I said, if
• 24:13
Speaker 2: something happens. I mean, their pitching is unbelievable, and Judge
• 24:19
  Speaker 2: is unbelievable. I mean he has He's a guy who'said
• 24:22
Speaker 2: all these home runs, and he has more home runs
• 24:24
Speaker 2: on this date than they find his career. I mean,
• 24:29
Speaker 2: what could you say. I mean, so if you want
• 24:31
Speaker 2: to say, oh time, he's the best player in baseball, okay,
• 24:35
Speaker 2: I don't argue with that, but Judge is right there
• 24:37
Speaker 2: with him. You can't put one over the other. You
• 24:40
  Speaker 2: really can't. I can't, you know, I mean.
• 24:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, and actually, and then the other thing is on
• 24:47
Speaker 1: the other side of town. After that boost the confidence
• 24:50
Speaker 1: from David Stearns a week ago or so, the Mets
• 24:53
Speaker 1: have been playing better.
• 24:54
Speaker 2: So I don't know, just well, they couldn't play They
• 24:56
Speaker 2: couldn't have been played any worse, you know. The one
• 24:59
Speaker 2: thing is Alex the lineup the Mets have been putting
• 25:03
Speaker 2: out this week. Even though they've won five, they're five
• 25:06
Speaker 2: and two on this road trip, and if they could
• 25:07
Speaker 2: win one more game, come back six and three, that's
• 25:11
Speaker 2: a small step towards towards a positive way to get
• 25:17
Speaker 2: back into quote unquote the race. But they got to
• 25:19
Speaker 2: get the five hundred first uh, deadline up deadline this week,
• 25:23
Speaker 2: Alex has been just downright embarrassing. Austin Slater Melendez, I
• 25:30
Speaker 2: mean some of the you look at the lineup and
• 25:31
Speaker 2: it's just what is going on? What was what was
• 25:35
Speaker 2: David Stern's thinking about. Yes, they don't have Polanco. I mean,
• 25:39
Speaker 2: the guy's a good hitter, you know, twenty six seventy
• 25:42
Speaker 2: six and about two to seventy five bang average last year.
• 25:46
Speaker 2: They need that and they don't have They don't have Lindor,
• 25:49
Speaker 2: and apparently they're not gonna have Lindor for a while.
• 25:52
Speaker 2: We don't hear. He's hurt worse than Soda was. And
• 25:56
Speaker 2: they lost Sodos for those twelve games, for those fifteen
• 26:00
Speaker 2: games where they were three, they won the first three
• 26:02
Speaker 2: games or out Soto then lost twelve in a row.
• 26:05
Speaker 2: And they lost a couple of games in that twelve
• 26:09
Speaker 2: game streak, won nothing twice two to one. A couple
• 26:12
Speaker 2: of times Soto one swinging the back could be a
• 26:15
Speaker 2: difference maker. Maybe they win. Maybe they win instead of
• 26:19
Speaker 2: losing twelve in a row. Maybe they're three and nine,
• 26:21
Speaker 2: which is horrible. But if they're three and nine instead
• 26:24
Speaker 2: of being eight games in the five hundred. They would
• 26:27
Speaker 2: be three games in the five hundred or four games
• 26:30
Speaker 2: in the five hundred. But this team is just so
• 26:34
Speaker 2: poorly constructed, it really is. I have no idea what's
• 26:37
Speaker 2: going on behind closed doors in that metal office. Khane's
• 26:42
Speaker 2: been silent. He can't be happy. You know. Now they
• 26:46
Speaker 2: come home and play Detroit for three and then they
• 26:50
Speaker 2: play the Yankees for three. And you know, anytime the
• 26:53
Speaker 2: Mets and the Yankees get together, every New York media
• 26:57
Speaker 2: outlet is there, and the Yankees might might bury them. Yeah, so,
• 27:06
Speaker 2: and that might be the end from Mendoza. We might
• 27:09
Speaker 2: hear something from Cohen.
• 27:11
Speaker 1: But but at the same time, they always tearing up
• 27:14
Speaker 1: the gears against the Yankees more so than other teams
• 27:17
  Speaker 1: I noticed.
• 27:17
Speaker 2: Yes, uh huh, Absolutely, there's no doubt about it. When
• 27:20
Speaker 2: they play each other, it's doesn't matter if it's if
• 27:23
Speaker 2: they're playing the checkers, they're both teams going to you know,
• 27:28
Speaker 2: they're going to be into the game. That's that's definitely gone.
• 27:31
Speaker 1: But I agree with you. I mean, even on the
• 27:32
Speaker 1: Yankee side, they have Max Schuman or whatever this kid's
• 27:34
Speaker 1: name is up and he started the game on Thursday
• 27:38
Speaker 1: for Cabby and then just Sundom gets hurt and know
• 27:42
Speaker 1: all that changes everything. But I do wonder about the
• 27:45
Speaker 1: line up structure for the Yankees. I know they're gonna
• 27:47
Speaker 1: be okay, but that they're winning with guys that you
• 27:51
Speaker 1: don't really hear about the every day bases. It's very interesting.
• 27:54
Speaker 1: One of the Major League Baseball notes, though, I will say,
• 27:58
Speaker 1: if you missed it, Tarik schools down for three to
• 28:00
Speaker 1: four months with surgery. And this guy is the guy
• 28:04
Speaker 1: that was so worried about pitching for Team USA because
• 28:07
Speaker 1: it's going to ruin his arm and all, and yet
• 28:10
Speaker 1: he's injured anyway. I don't know. The pitching of today
• 28:13
Speaker 1: is so strange like that, like all of a sudden,
• 28:15
Speaker 1: this kid's in a contract year, going down for three
• 28:18
Speaker 1: to four months for surgery. Something's got to change with
• 28:21
  Speaker 1: our pictures, Louis.
• 28:23
Speaker 2: Well, yes, yeah, absolutely, And it's the one thing where
• 28:26
Speaker 2: and you know, I have critical I'd been of Stearns
• 28:28
Speaker 2: and I've been critical of him on this podcast. The
• 28:31
Speaker 2: one thing I agree with him, I would never give
• 28:34
Speaker 2: a picture more than a four a four year deal.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: I mean, he's eight year deals to pictures, and that's
• 28:41
Speaker 2: what Struble's going to get from somebody even with the
• 28:44
Speaker 2: operation and missing three months unless he comes back in
• 28:51
Speaker 2: three months, and this ineffective. I just want to son,
• 28:55
Speaker 2: he's got these pictures to long term contracts. I don't
• 28:58
Speaker 2: know what it is. All these guys keep getting hurt
• 29:01
Speaker 2: over and over and over every you know, every day
• 29:04
  Speaker 2: you're looking on a crawl or you're you're looking on
• 29:08
Speaker 2: the various websites. Who's out for three months, who's out
• 29:11
Speaker 2: for the year, Who has Tommy John? Everybody's getting Tommy John.
• 29:15
Speaker 2: I mean, it's ridiculous, but you know, you're talking about
• 29:19
Speaker 2: Major League Baseball and one I want to give the
• 29:22
Speaker 2: one team thumbs up. Season's only thirty nine games old,
• 29:27
Speaker 2: and the Chicago Cubs have their second ten game winning
• 29:30
Speaker 2: streak in the first thirty nine games. It's only happened
• 29:34
Speaker 2: four times in Major League Baseball, Alex. The last one
• 29:37
Speaker 2: to do it was the nineteen fifty five Brooklyn Dodgers,
• 29:40
Speaker 2: who won their first World Series that year. It's only
• 29:44
Speaker 2: four of the other three times was nineteen forty one,
• 29:47
Speaker 2: eighteen eighty eight, and eighteen eighty That's actually the only
• 29:51
Speaker 2: time in the first thirty nine games you had two
• 29:53
Speaker 2: game winning streaks. The Cubs are good. The Cubs are.
• 29:56
Speaker 1: Good well, and I tell you the signing has paid off.
• 30:02
Speaker 1: He's actually living up to the contract and he's just
• 30:04
Speaker 1: he's a great kid to watch play, I'll tell you that,
• 30:07
Speaker 1: and to get alerts about him.
• 30:08
Speaker 2: So there's no doubt about it. I mean, and once
• 30:12
Speaker 2: the ball is hit out to right center, left center,
• 30:15
Speaker 2: he's going to track it down. He's that good at
• 30:18
  Speaker 2: defensive center fielder.
• 30:20
Speaker 1: Well, well that's the other look again, I'm not worrying probably.
• 30:24
Speaker 1: You know, in the last few months, basketball has really
• 30:27
Speaker 1: been on the you know, the focus here because of
• 30:31
Speaker 1: Saint John's to begin, the Yankees and Mets opening day
• 30:34
Speaker 1: that they were the guys that were about to do this,
• 30:36
Speaker 1: Switch sixteen the next day, Sweet sixteen the next day,
• 30:39
Speaker 1: and then the Knicks. So it's it's like baseball almost
• 30:43
Speaker 1: takes a back seat when these basketball teams and yes, hockey,
• 30:47
Speaker 1: when the Rangers are good, are doing well through the spring.
• 30:50
Speaker 1: I mean, there's no doubt about it.
• 30:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that. I mean, obviously, the
• 30:56
Speaker 2: baseball season is, as we said, you know, it's a marathon.
• 30:59
Speaker 2: It's so long. Once the NBA season's over, especially locally,
• 31:05
Speaker 2: if by some chance Nicks don't get to the finals,
• 31:08
Speaker 2: you know, then baseball will take center stage and the
• 31:14
Speaker 2: criticism on the Mets or the Yankees or whatever. The
• 31:17
Speaker 2: Yankees need to get another piece of the same.
• 31:21
Speaker 1: Mike Chuck could comes to the Yankees. I don't know
• 31:23
Speaker 1: if that happens, but we'll see.
• 31:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I could see that. I mean, he's having
• 31:28
Speaker 2: a good year. I mean he's not the Mike Trout
• 31:31
Speaker 2: that we knew who's the best player in baseball. But
• 31:35
Speaker 2: getting back to to basketball, one thing in basketball that
• 31:38
Speaker 2: happened on Thursday, late Thursday afternoon that I totally disagree
• 31:42
Speaker 2: with is the NCAA expanding the tournament from sixty four
• 31:48
Speaker 2: to seventy six teams. I mean, Alex, this is a
• 31:51
Speaker 2: money grab. Just you know, obviously there's more games that
• 31:54
Speaker 2: will be televised, and I'm sure there's a clause in
• 31:56
Speaker 2: there in their deal that more tell of os games,
• 32:00
Speaker 2: they get more money. It's I'm sure it's not gonna
• 32:02
Speaker 2: say stay the same, You're just gonna have more mediocre
• 32:06
Speaker 2: teams that that are gonna be playing on what will
• 32:09
Speaker 2: be the first four will now be the first twelve. Uh,
• 32:14
Speaker 2: you know they're gonna they're gonna continue in Dayton because
• 32:16
Speaker 2: Dayton's a great basketball town. And then they're gonna have
• 32:19
Speaker 2: uh uh, you know, three games on Tuesday, three games
• 32:22
Speaker 2: on Wednesday, like a wild.
• 32:24
Speaker 1: Card round for a bet for March Madness right there.
• 32:26
Speaker 2: That's right, that's exactly what it is. And you're not
• 32:29
Speaker 2: gonna have the Cinderella teams playing anymore because they're gonna
• 32:32
Speaker 2: be playing each other in these first four, in these
• 32:35
Speaker 2: first twelve, I get whatever they're gonna call it, but
• 32:40
  Speaker 2: you know, it's a it's a. It's they're going, they're delivering.
• 32:43
Speaker 2: They're evaluating the regular season more and more than ever.
• 32:47
Speaker 2: So teams that are five and eleven in there in
• 32:49
Speaker 2: the big conferences, you know, the Big Ten, the Big Twelve,
• 32:52
Speaker 2: the ACC, the Big East, are gonna get in the NCAA.
• 32:56
Speaker 1: That's selection show. It's gonna be two hours then.
• 32:59
  Speaker 2: Yea, No, it's it's now. It's let's face, it's professional
• 33:02
Speaker 2: basketball that's run by the.
• 33:05
Speaker 1: Major is driving list. That is what you're saying.
• 33:08
Speaker 2: Oh, I would say money's driving at ni L and
• 33:13
Speaker 2: I think this is just a leading to what could happen,
• 33:18
Speaker 2: uh where if they didn't do this. The major conference
• 33:22
Speaker 2: and they still might do this, especially because of the
• 33:25
Speaker 2: football situation, might break away from the NCAA, and that
• 33:30
  Speaker 2: that is still very possible. I don't like I don't
• 33:35
  Speaker 2: like the expander.
• 33:38
Speaker 1: How would that work if they were to keep playing?
• 33:40
Speaker 1: How would that work if.
• 33:43
Speaker 2: They if they split?
• 33:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 33:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what they'll do is just saying we'll
• 33:48
Speaker 2: just say it's the Big twelve, the ACC on the
• 33:54
Speaker 2: Big ten and the SEC say hey, let's just leave
• 33:58
Speaker 2: the NCAA start our own. There'll be lawsuits and all
• 34:02
Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, and we'll do our own deal
• 34:06
Speaker 2: with with CBS, NBC, ABC, Prime Video. That could happen
• 34:13
Speaker 2: in twenty in the early in the early thirties, after
• 34:16
Speaker 2: these TV deals expire. Remember, basketball's popular, but it's driven
• 34:24
Speaker 2: it's driven by football. It's driven by football. But I know,
• 34:28
Speaker 2: I don't like them going from six, you know, from
• 34:30
Speaker 2: sixty eight to seventy six teams, Alex. When I first
• 34:34
Speaker 2: saw watching the NCAA tournament, it was twenty four teams.
• 34:37
Speaker 2: Then it went to thirty two. You know, it's just
• 34:43
Speaker 2: things change, my friend.
• 34:45
Speaker 1: Yes, they do, all right. Speaking of change. Two days
• 34:49
Speaker 1: after Frank Bolton retires from the Ducks, New York loses
• 34:54
Speaker 1: a legend John Sterling, and you know, we all know
• 34:58
Speaker 1: he had his boy Wolves and as as others say
• 35:01
Speaker 1: mistakes last ten or so years. But you knew him.
• 35:07
Speaker 1: You knew his announcing better than a lot of people,
• 35:08
Speaker 1: I think, because you listened to him on n wmc
• 35:11
Speaker 1: A and then you know he was the Islander guy
• 35:13
Speaker 1: and the Nets guy and the Hawks guy. I mean
• 35:16
Speaker 1: he did a lot of He did more sports that
• 35:18
Speaker 1: we give him a credit for.
• 35:20
Speaker 2: Firstly, Alex, he did a lot of sports. I mean
• 35:23
Speaker 2: he did the Baltimore Bullets who are now the Wizards
• 35:26
Speaker 2: for one year. He did Morgan State football for I
• 35:30
Speaker 2: think five six years on their network. He did the
• 35:36
Speaker 2: Nets for six years. In the last couple of years
• 35:40
Speaker 2: it was simulcast radio and TV. He did the Islanders
• 35:44
Speaker 2: for three years and had a signature call when he
• 35:50
Speaker 2: was with the Islanders out there that cook story about
• 35:53
Speaker 2: the Islanders in the second and John Sterling he did
• 35:58
Speaker 2: he actually did the New York Golden Blades. New York
• 36:01
Speaker 2: Golden Blades were the uh well actually their first call.
• 36:05
Speaker 2: They were called the New York Raiders, Alex. Their games
• 36:07
Speaker 2: were on WMCA. They were in the world Hockey Association,
• 36:12
Speaker 2: so he did their games in seventy two seventy three
• 36:14
Speaker 2: on on the UMCA, and then the next year they
• 36:19
Speaker 2: changed their name to the Golden Blades, but after a
• 36:21
Speaker 2: half season they couldn't pay their bills. They played that
• 36:24
Speaker 2: Nison Square Garden and during the middle of the season
• 36:27
Speaker 2: they finished their season down in Cherry Hill at the
• 36:31
Speaker 2: Cherry Hill Arena and they were called the Jersey Knights
• 36:33
Speaker 2: in at the Lapidate Arena. At the end of that
• 36:36
Speaker 2: year they were sold and they moved to San Diego
• 36:39
Speaker 2: and played the next three years before the team the
• 36:42
Speaker 2: team went out of business. He was also the play
• 36:45
Speaker 2: by play on WMCA for the World Football League team
• 36:50
Speaker 2: called the New York Stars. They played at Randalls Island
• 36:54
Speaker 2: and the Bob Sheppard was their PA announcer. Believe it
• 36:57
Speaker 2: or not, Randalls Island was a hell hole, dilapidated stadium,
• 37:01
Speaker 2: but John did the play by play there. He did
• 37:07
Speaker 2: everything it really He did the play by play and
• 37:10
Speaker 2: his color commentator was somebody who died three or four
• 37:14
Speaker 2: months ago, former Jet great Matt Snell. It was still
• 37:18
Speaker 2: doing the play by play and Matt Snell did the
• 37:20
Speaker 2: color and Bob Sheppard was the PA announcer, but the
• 37:22
Speaker 2: team only lasted a year and a half. So then
• 37:26
Speaker 2: he went to Atlanta and he became a voice on
• 37:29
Speaker 2: TBS when TBS was thriving thanks to Terred Tarriner, who
• 37:33
Speaker 2: passed away last week. You know, he made TBS a superstation.
• 37:38
Speaker 2: So you knew John Sterling, you knew on a national basis,
• 37:42
Speaker 2: you knew John Sterling. Stip carried Pete van Weir and
• 37:45
Speaker 2: Joe Simpson, Don Sunton. Everybody watched the Braves, and then
• 37:51
Speaker 2: when they became good, they became America's team. They really
• 37:54
Speaker 2: did from a baseball standpoint. And Sterling was there for
• 37:57
Speaker 2: nine years, and then he came to the Yankees to
• 38:00
Speaker 2: do their radio in nineteen eighty nine, and he was
• 38:03
Speaker 2: there for thirty six years and really did over five
• 38:08
Speaker 2: thousand games and did five thousand and sixty in a row,
• 38:12
Speaker 2: which is just mind boggling, and for the last fifteen
• 38:16
Speaker 2: years did the or plus maybe twenty years he did
• 38:20
Speaker 2: all nine innings alone. Yes he was eccentric, Yes he
• 38:24
Speaker 2: was quirky. Yes he wasn't the standard play by play announcer.
• 38:29
Speaker 2: As far as fundamentals, his fundies, as Keith Hernandez would say,
• 38:34
Speaker 2: might have been a little a little sketchy, but he
• 38:38
Speaker 2: was a character of the game and that was part
• 38:42
Speaker 2: of part of his charm. Very yes, I met him
• 38:45
Speaker 2: a couple of times because he did some next backup
• 38:47
Speaker 2: games when I was there after he left the Nets. Yeah,
• 38:52
Speaker 2: even talking to him, he always felt like he wasn't
• 38:56
Speaker 2: listening to you. But you know, everybody's different. But back
• 39:01
Speaker 2: when he was the Nets announcer after Roy bow who
• 39:06
Speaker 2: really shouldn't have owned the Nets and the Islanders maybe
• 39:10
Speaker 2: one team, but he didn't have the resources to own both,
• 39:13
Speaker 2: and that's what led to the selling of Doctor J.
• 39:17
Speaker 2: John Strong was very close to Kevin Lockery, the Nets
• 39:19
Speaker 2: coach during the final ABA years when they won the
• 39:22
Speaker 2: championship and then to their first three four years in
• 39:25
Speaker 2: the NBA. He had that choice after they after the
• 39:29
Speaker 2: Nets and Islanders split ownership, to go to the Islanders,
• 39:34
Speaker 2: continue to do their radio or go to the Nets. He
• 39:37
Speaker 2: decided to go to the Nets, which he said, if
• 39:40
Speaker 2: I'd stay with the Islanders, you know, I would have
• 39:43
Speaker 2: been there for their couple years. He left just before
• 39:46
Speaker 2: their cup years began, so that that's this little interesting tidbit.
• 39:52
Speaker 2: But he was a unique guy, to be sure, and
• 39:57
Speaker 2: had an incredible voice. I mean even to the end,
• 40:01
Speaker 2: he had incredible pipes that god.
• 40:04
Speaker 1: You know Yaus was hired by w ABC to do
• 40:07
Speaker 1: some sports talk after he retired from the game.
• 40:09
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, they did.
• 40:12
Speaker 1: So it was a connected. Now we we're going to
• 40:14
Speaker 1: play his islander goal in a little bit to end
• 40:16
Speaker 1: the segment. But for me, it was just I never
• 40:20
Speaker 1: got to deserve the week. So I just said, here
• 40:25
Speaker 1: the synchronicity of my dad passing in twenty three on
• 40:28
Speaker 1: April fifteenth, which is your birthday, yes, and then John
• 40:33
Speaker 1: Sterling retiring a year later, it was very not jarring,
• 40:37
Speaker 1: but it was very fascinating to me because you know,
• 40:40
Speaker 1: my dad loves Sterling. He listened to him all the time,
• 40:42
Speaker 1: and he bashed him a little bit, but that's fine.
• 40:45
Speaker 2: You know everybody everybody did.
• 40:47
Speaker 1: But but he raised me on He raised me and
• 40:50
Speaker 1: this whole and our parents raised us on John Sterling.
• 40:53
Speaker 1: And that's what I was trying to say is this
• 40:56
Speaker 1: generation was raised on John Sterling. And that's why on Monday,
• 41:01
Speaker 1: the entire community, I don't care how old you are,
• 41:05
Speaker 1: we all felt it. From any age ranger, it was
• 41:07
Speaker 1: pretty remarkable. How long.
• 41:10
  Speaker 2: You're right. I'm not even a Yankee fan, and I
• 41:12
Speaker 2: felt sad on Monday. I agree, I agree with you.
• 41:16
Speaker 1: And it's not just us, it's the younger kids to
• 41:18
Speaker 1: that feeling because we grew up listening to Sterling because
• 41:21
Speaker 1: even though it was twenty four, a lot of us,
• 41:24
Speaker 1: you know, a lot of the kids still listened to
• 41:27
Speaker 1: Sterling because he was the here of twenty four.
• 41:28
Speaker 2: So you know, and you know, obviously you live in
• 41:32
Speaker 2: a different era because you know you're young. But in
• 41:36
Speaker 2: the seventies when when WMCA starred his sports talk show
• 41:42
Speaker 2: like six to eight it was six to eight or
• 41:44
Speaker 2: five to seven, it was like the greatest thing for
• 41:49
Speaker 2: US sports guys. I mean, Gary Cohen talked about it
• 41:51
Speaker 2: the other night or talking to Keith that he used
• 41:54
Speaker 2: to listen to it. And he said on WMCA. By
• 41:57
Speaker 2: the way, WMCA didn't get unpaid publicity that wnc A
• 42:02
Speaker 2: those four calls got last week. It was probably five
• 42:06
Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars worth of mentions. But we all used
• 42:10
Speaker 2: to listen, and boy John was bombastic on the air.
• 42:13
Speaker 2: If you disrespected them on the air, he went right
• 42:16
Speaker 2: back at you. He was he was not he was
• 42:19
Speaker 2: not afraid to call to call the listeners out, which
• 42:22
Speaker 2: made the show interesting.
• 42:26
Speaker 1: Well, it's gonna be it's gonna be sad, they're gonna
• 42:30
Speaker 1: put a patch on sorry. May eighteenth, and then of
• 42:33
Speaker 1: course I'm going to Old Timer's Day, which is ironically
• 42:36
Speaker 1: against the Braves, which I find interesting because two of
• 42:41
Speaker 1: those world series were against the Braves. In Ted Turner's Heyday,
• 42:46
Speaker 1: I mean, it's all kind of weird how.
• 42:48
Speaker 2: All that's happened, it really is.
• 42:50
Speaker 1: But he also inspired and my mom's had a great
• 42:52
Speaker 1: idea to say a prayer by the microphone because he
• 42:55
Speaker 1: did inspire me to get into the broadcasting biz. Of course,
• 42:59
Speaker 1: I think anybody in media and calling games listening to Sterling,
• 43:03
Speaker 1: you were inspired by that, you know, him and Bob Murphy,
• 43:06
Speaker 1: and for me also how he rose. I mean, those
• 43:09
Speaker 1: three were the guys that I listened to constantly.
• 43:12
Speaker 2: And baseball on a radio is different than just about that.
• 43:15
Speaker 1: Michael Okay. The k Sterling connection was so special that
• 43:20
Speaker 1: when they moved him to Yes, it definitely changed the booth. Now.
• 43:24
Speaker 1: I love Susan. I think they had an interesting rapport,
• 43:27
Speaker 1: but Kay and Sterling were just something else you won't
• 43:30
Speaker 1: get that kind of duo anywhere else ever again in
• 43:33
Speaker 1: my view, but Alex absolutely because they they bounced off
• 43:39
Speaker 1: each other, they were just and I was young. But
• 43:42
Speaker 1: I'll tell you my first memory of listening to them.
• 43:46
Speaker 1: I played video games a lot as a kid, and
• 43:48
Speaker 1: they did the video game version of one of the games.
• 43:54
Speaker 1: I go to the backseat of my dad, my stepdad's car.
• 43:57
Speaker 1: He turns on the game, like, wait, these are the
• 44:00
Speaker 1: guys from the video game, And then I realized Kay
• 44:03
Speaker 1: and Sterling were the voice of the eight. And I
• 44:05
Speaker 1: had to be about seven or eight years old when
• 44:08
Speaker 1: I realized that. And you know, it seemed to me
• 44:13
Speaker 1: that Sterling Michael was very young when they paired him
• 44:17
Speaker 1: with him. That was the other thing about it. He
• 44:20
Speaker 1: was a kid still when they paired him with Sterling.
• 44:22
Speaker 2: He had actually had been the beat writer for the
• 44:24
Speaker 2: Nets for the Posts, because that's how I knew him,
• 44:28
Speaker 2: and I haven't seen him in twenty years. But it
• 44:33
Speaker 2: was a good guy. He was the Nets beat writer,
• 44:35
Speaker 2: and I knew him pretty well when he was covering
• 44:37
Speaker 2: the Nets in his newspaper days. And then got an
• 44:40
Speaker 2: opportunity to do the Yankees, and apparently of the five
• 44:45
Speaker 2: or six finalists. Some of them had done play by
• 44:49
Speaker 2: play already, but John said, this is the guy I
• 44:51
Speaker 2: want after listening to his tape, and the rest is history.
• 44:56
Speaker 1: And yeah, and Michael was. Michael also was. He was
• 45:00
Speaker 1: good on radio in his own right. And you know,
• 45:03
Speaker 1: we see Gary Cohen on on TV, but I have
• 45:08
Speaker 1: to say him and Murphy were very special also to
• 45:10
Speaker 1: listen on the air, and they had that kind of
• 45:14
Speaker 1: same rapport. And Murphy lasted a long time, actually, I
• 45:19
Speaker 1: remember I think he passed oh four or five one of.
• 45:22
Speaker 2: Those, yes, yep, right around there yet.
• 45:25
Speaker 1: But no Cohen, Murphy, Case Sterling. They were the voices
• 45:29
Speaker 1: of Art and then how he and Fran on Fox
• 45:33
Speaker 1: Sports Net. Man, I could go all day about this.
• 45:35
  Speaker 2: He's just like, yeah, I mean, we're gonna lose a
• 45:38
Speaker 2: great announcer when he retires at the end of this year, Howie,
• 45:41
  Speaker 2: that's for sure.
• 45:42
Speaker 1: And see I think how he was on f A N.
• 45:45
Speaker 1: Then they moved him to TV, and then Cohen was
• 45:48
Speaker 1: on radio. Then they moved him to TV.
• 45:50
Speaker 2: And Cohen said he would never do TV. But I
• 45:54
Speaker 2: guess when when they told him how much money, how
• 45:56
Speaker 2: much more money he can get on TV and radio.
• 46:01
Speaker 1: We love you, Gary if you're listening. But yes, no,
• 46:03
Speaker 1: I get what you're saying too, but no that And
• 46:08
Speaker 1: of course, you know what happened is thrilling began all
• 46:13
Speaker 1: those calls when they were starting to winning those championships.
• 46:16
Speaker 1: I guess he did before them, but they were really
• 46:17
Speaker 1: highlighted because they were on those championship right.
• 46:20
Speaker 2: Absolutely, they were highlighted because the Yankees were. I mean,
• 46:24
Speaker 2: that's one of the great teams of all time, that
• 46:27
Speaker 2: those four championships in five years. Even though the ninety
• 46:30
Speaker 2: six team was more of an overachieving team against the Braves,
• 46:38
Speaker 2: but ninety eight, ninety nine, two thousand, even two thousand
• 46:41
Speaker 2: and one, which I lost Game seven, those four teams
• 46:44
  Speaker 2: were dominant.
• 46:45
Speaker 1: Ninety six, I mean, lay Rich, that's thirty years ago.
• 46:48
Speaker 1: How is that possible?
• 46:49
Speaker 2: But how is that possible?
• 46:51
Speaker 1: But no, it's uh well, And that's the other thing.
• 46:56
Speaker 1: I feel motivated to go back out there and do
• 46:58
Speaker 1: play live late because that's my passion. And you know,
• 47:01
Speaker 1: I feel like this loss is something that inspires me
• 47:05
Speaker 1: to keep going with play by play as a thank
• 47:08
Speaker 1: you to John for filling on our airwaves up with
• 47:11
Speaker 1: with his calls. I mean, and then how he's retiring,
• 47:16
Speaker 1: like it's time to get back out there and start
• 47:19
Speaker 1: making de moreals. How I feel, it's like it's to
• 47:22
Speaker 1: thank these guys for all they did for us.
• 47:24
Speaker 2: It's your sweet spot, go for it, that's it.
• 47:27
Speaker 1: I love it. And I've done basketball about hockey, well
• 47:30
Speaker 1: not so much hockey. That's tough sport to do. But
• 47:33
Speaker 1: basketball and baseball are by sweet spots. So who knows one.
• 47:36
Speaker 1: But it would be a thank you to John, to
• 47:39
Speaker 1: my dad, to my mom, all these people for pushing
• 47:43
Speaker 1: me to listen to radio when I was a little kid.
• 47:44
Speaker 1: I mean, that's what it is for me.
• 47:46
Speaker 2: So I love radio. You know that.
• 47:50
Speaker 1: It's uh, it was sad, and it is sad. I
• 47:54
Speaker 1: mean I thought after he retired he was going to
• 47:57
Speaker 1: be around till ninety I really, or or more I
• 48:00
Speaker 1: thought he was still gonna be around for a while.
• 48:02
Speaker 2: But yeah, nah, I mean, but he had a great life.
• 48:07
Speaker 1: He had an incredible life, and he will be missed.
• 48:11
Speaker 1: And I have to say also that I think the
• 48:14
Speaker 1: newer generation of voices on there, and I don't mean
• 48:17
Speaker 1: Dave Simons is a vet. I mean the Justin Shackles
• 48:19
Speaker 1: of the world. They're gonna make their moment too. I
• 48:21
Speaker 1: think I know he called the perfect game for her mom.
• 48:25
Speaker 1: But Shackle has so much potential to as a kid,
• 48:28
Speaker 1: you know, so I think he's going to keep growing.
• 48:30
Speaker 2: No, I agree with that. I think justin Shackle, Emmanuel Barbarry,
• 48:35
Speaker 2: I mean, they all they all have.
• 48:37
Speaker 1: And then you guys have the Mets have a good
• 48:40
Speaker 1: team that go on the road, and how he doesn't.
• 48:41
Speaker 1: I mean that's a good squad right that.
• 48:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder what the Mets are going to do.
• 48:45
Speaker 2: I wonder if they're going to keep Keith I assume
• 48:48
Speaker 2: I'll keep Keith rad or if they're going to continue
• 48:50
Speaker 2: to keep Pat McCarthy, make him, you know, the full
• 48:54
Speaker 2: time guy. You know, he does pre post and he
• 48:57
Speaker 2: does he does one how he's not there. So I
• 49:00
Speaker 2: wonder if they're gonna look for I hate to say,
• 49:03
Speaker 2: this's a big time name, some type a name guy.
• 49:07
  Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what the Mets you're
• 49:09
Speaker 2: going to do. So so so we'll see. That'll be
• 49:12
Speaker 2: an interesting Everybody will want that job, you know, if
• 49:15
Speaker 2: you have a chance to do the Mets of the Yankees, uh,
• 49:19
