- 0:18Sean is a movie critic and you can find his
- 0:20movie reviews at movie cricket dot net. Good morning, mister
- 0:25means good morning. What movies are we talking about today?
- 0:28Speaker 2: We have two movies to talk about their opening for
- 0:30the Thanksgiving weekend. We will start with Mowana too. I'm
- 0:35a bit limited in what I can say here because
- 0:37the review embargo doesn't lift until ten am. Oh.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I'm sure that they're gonna throw us all in my
- 0:42critics prison, But.
- 0:44Speaker 2: The social media embargo was lifted like a week ago,
- 0:47so I can talk some. This is following up on
- 0:50the twenty sixteen movie Mowana, in which a fifteen year
- 0:54old girl on a South Pacific island traveled across the
- 0:58ocean to find the lava monster that was copardizing her village,
- 1:01and with the help of Maui, a demi god with
- 1:06Polynesian tattoos and a magic fish hook and a voice
- 1:10sounding remarkably like Dwayne Johnson.
- 1:11Speaker 1: This is animated.
- 1:12Speaker 2: This is animated.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The first one apparently is on Disney Plus. It's like
- 1:16number one most viewed animated.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Kids love it. Yeah, yeah, it's a fun movie. Anyway,
- 1:22So the sequel the thing this was originally this originally
- 1:25started out as a TV series for Disney Plus, but
- 1:27then they decided now, I think after COVID They're like, no,
- 1:30let's just make another movie. So I did really like it.
- 1:33It's fun, it's got some nice adventure. I like the
- 1:35message about the importance of human connection, whether it's across
- 1:38oceans or across generations. You can read the full review
- 1:42at ten o'clock at movie cricket dot net and that's
- 1:46when you can find out how many stars. Okay, okay,
- 1:49all right, so that leaves Maria Maria. This is a
- 1:52biographical drama about Maria Kallis, the famous opera singer Diva.
- 1:58Speaker 1: There's a play about her too.
- 2:00Speaker 2: What is it called Masterclass?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Masterclass? Yeah, just the one woman.
- 2:04Speaker 2: That's a two it's a two part. So that's right.
- 2:06There is another because because she's teaching to somebody. Yeah yeah,
- 2:10so Maria callis uh probably the greatest opera singer the
- 2:14world has ever seen this At the where we find
- 2:19her in the movie, This is uh towards the end
- 2:22of her life. Matter of fact, the movie shows the
- 2:25last week of her life, age fifty three and failing health.
- 2:29Her singing days are pretty much behind her, but she's
- 2:32determined to sort of go out on her own terms.
- 2:35She starts rehearsing with an accompanist to see if she
- 2:37can still has enough in the tank to mount a comeback.
- 2:42She's played here by Angeline and Jolie and and one
- 2:45of one of the things that's very cool about this
- 2:46is that there's no effort to do prosthetic makeup or
- 2:49anything like that to make Angelina Jolie look.
- 2:52Speaker 3: More like But does that take you out of it
- 2:54because you just say it's Angelina and Julie.
- 2:56Speaker 2: No, No, it's because it's a legend playing a legend,
- 2:59and that that uh, that that really that really works,
- 3:03And there's this sort of unspoken back and forth that
- 3:06that that the actor and character can converse on that love.
- 3:11It's really amazing to watch. So while Maria is testing
- 3:14her voice, she's also granting an interview to a young
- 3:16journalist played by Cody smit McPhee. Who you would recognize
- 3:20from lots of stuff, uh, through through the interviews, and
- 3:24it's not entirely clear if the interviews are real or
- 3:27made up in her head, because because the the name
- 3:30of the journalist's name is the same name as a
- 3:32brand of Kueludes.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Actually, was that something that she partakes?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah? There, there, there, there is indication that she was
- 3:43hiding hiding pills in all of her fur coats and stuff. Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So so through these interviews, she's flashing back through her
- 3:50life being a young girl in Greece, fending off the Nazis,
- 3:55her first marriage, and her affair to with Aristotle on Nassas,
- 3:59the the rich Greek tycoon who read dated for many
- 4:02years even after Onassas married Jacqueline Kennedy. This is directed
- 4:08by Pablo Lorraine, the Chilean director who he did he
- 4:11did very similar treatment with Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie with
- 4:15Natalie Portman and with Princess Diana and Spencer with Christen Stewart.
- 4:22And it's sort of like this trilogy of tragic twentieth
- 4:25century women. He has a thing. What I really like
- 4:31is that what I really like about Marie is how
- 4:34the narrative flips from pastor present, from reality to potentially fantasy,
- 4:38and from the glory of Maria Maria kliss singing career
- 4:42to the life she's living just before her death. Three
- 4:45and a half stars. This is This is really beautifully done.
- 4:49It'll be in some theaters starting on Wednesday, and then
- 4:51if you don't want to go out for it, Netflix
- 4:54will start screening it on December eleventh.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Now I saw the finally saw the Heretic and as
- 5:01I recall, your review of it was quite you gave
- 5:04it quite a good review three and a half. I
- 5:05think some well deserved. It's I would just add to
- 5:10your comments about it. Hugh Grant is astonishing, astonished, how
- 5:19perfectly cast for that and the two women, the two
- 5:22young Mormon missionaries, sister missionaries, both excellent. Yes, I could
- 5:28find no fault with it. Maybe a little long, maybe
- 5:32it drags a little toward the end.
- 5:34Speaker 2: The ending. The ending is a little odd, but I
- 5:36think if you're I think I think you go with it.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Sure it makes sense, it is It is a very
- 5:41not to give anything away, it's a very odd ending.
- 5:45But but once you're that invested. But the first part
- 5:48of the movie that it's very talking, but it's just
- 5:52so griveting, tense, riveting, it's just great. So I highly
- 5:57recommend the Heritic And I saw Glad two and of
- 6:03lukewarm about it well.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So so before Gladiator Too, there was a trailer for
- 6:09Craven the Hunter and Craven the Hunter Aaron Taylor Johnson
- 6:13plays the son of Russell Crowe, and as I'm watching
- 6:19Gladiator Too, I thought, boy, I wish Aaron Taylor Johnson
- 6:24had played the Sun in the.
- 6:27Speaker 2: There's there's nothing wrong with Paul meskeal, It's just that
- 6:30there's no way because without Russell Crowe there is a
- 6:33giant hole that that that the Gladiator two has which
- 6:37cannot be filled easily, and Meskell doesn't do it. I
- 6:40don't know if Aaron Taylor Johnson would have filled it either.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 6:42Speaker 3: It just seems like he's a bigger presence.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I heard another reviewer say that pretty much the same
- 6:47thing too. So Paul Muscall is a fine actor. He
- 6:50just didn't he just didn't have that Russell Crowe.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And Denzel would That would have been me here last week.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I'd say it was you.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Denzel makes it up for some of the Denzel.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Denzel is enjoying chewing the scenery exactly. Well, next week,
- 7:06night bitch, Yes, what you can say that on the radio. Okay,
- 7:11that's good night. This is This is based on a
- 7:14novel about a frazzle suburban housewife who starts taking on
- 7:19the characts characteristics.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Of a dog.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And this is This is played by played by Amy
- 7:24Adams in the movie. Well, okay, night bitch. The two,
- 7:28The two, I'm looking forward to the next week. It's
- 7:31kind of a grab bag. Next week there's one called
- 7:32The Order, which is Jude Law going undercover to infiltrate
- 7:37white supremacists. And Flow, which is a animated movie about
- 7:43a cat in the wild and it's like no dialogue whatsoever,
- 7:46and it's it's supposed to be it's supposed to beautiful.
- 7:49Heard about this one? All right, I will I will
- 7:52report back. Thank you very much.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Sewan means reviewing movies for us. Thank you, movie cricket
