- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I'm excited about this.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: You just want to fly behind and go?
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Always always okay.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: It's midnight.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Midnight.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I've seen midnight.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: Uh it's noon.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: Are we already running?
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: It's noon.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: We're running.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: Uh we got a hurricane on the way.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: Hurricane's coming.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: Azeazaz.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: How do you say this?
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: They got pick names.
- 0:26SPEAKER_03: You know what it means?
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: It has a it has a meaning?
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: Goddess salvation.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Is that what it means?
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: That's frightening.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: How many preachers do you think are gonna use that Sunday?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I I I won't because I can't say it.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: So um does it really?
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: What's the what's going on over at the hurricane thing?
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: It's like a variation of Isaiah or something, right?
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: It looks absolutely with a couple extra vowels thrown in there.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: I saw it.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: That could be way off.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: I didn't fact that.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty sure I don't know.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Are we running?
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: It's coming.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: This is 100% maybe.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: This is this is what happens.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: 100% maybe, yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Um, so this is Wednesday.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Wednesday?
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: So Friday, Saturday could be could be a little exciting.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Saturday could be dicey.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Saturday morning.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: It never lands during the day.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: They always seem to land in the middle of the night.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: This is my first one.
- 1:15unknown: Oh.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: We moved like two months, three months after Sally.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So we have a lot of folks downstairs saying, What do we do?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I don't know.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I've never done anything.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So I and I'm I'm the worst advice.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I just figured out if it gets really bad, I go to the church and then wait for it to pass.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: This is unofficial advice.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Unoffici.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: It's maybe not even advice at all.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: This is I'll tell you what everybody does.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: They go sit in gas lines and then they go buy water, and then you're out of time.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So I just have extra water at the house and we and we're not gonna go anywhere.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So gas for the generator, which I I'll just use my gas from the lawnmower.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: I will say we do have a hurricane preparedness guide on our website as a resource, and I think we're probably sending that out.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Proud of our church.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: And we have a we have a team.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: We do.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: We do.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: For when after the storm comes through to go through and help help folks that got some challenges.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: So we're here, we're here to help.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: After the fact.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: That's just nuts, man.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I I hadn't it was at this point, it was all off my mind.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Didn't think about it.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden, what is that?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, come on.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And then you had this morning First Legacy Group.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: First Legacy Group.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: That was great.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Got one tonight.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Got one tonight.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I'd like to invite anybody that has not signed up to sign up to come to them.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: There's a oh got done.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And I thought to myself, that is a lot of information going out.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Just most of it is a response to what we've heard over all the last legacies, and really now that we've got things in place, some adjustments that we're making and projects that are coming up.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: But it's just shoving information out there and people are probably choking on it, and then we'll hear back as they come out.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But it's good, great stuff.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Great stuff.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, which this will come out Thursday, so it'll have already passed, but there's two next week that you can get in on, right?
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: On Thursday.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: So if you want to come to that every other year or so, great way to connect.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Updates, share part, vision, ask questions, all those things.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So it's great, great rhythm that we have.
- 3:11unknown: Yeah.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: It's good, right?
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Of course that is.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Well, we finished Hebrews.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Um first John.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Just first John.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: First, second and third John.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: But we're gonna today we're gonna tie second and third John in.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: It all works together.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Can I can I go ahead and here's my big thought.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Tell me.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: The writer of Hebrews and the writer of John were trying to accomplish the exact same thing.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Writer of Hebrews were trying to get Jewish believers in Jesus to not walk away from Jesus and go back to Judaism.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: John, who's the who they uh the the the gospel writer, John, um is is talking about a problem, a crisis that they have in their church.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So this is really a sermon that's distributed to the to the house churches that he cared for about people in the church that are doing exactly that.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: They're walking away from the faith.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: They no longer believe that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And so he's trying to convince the people that are in the church to remember what you learned, to not walk away from the faith.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: The difference is they're two wildly different writers.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: So Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews does word math.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Everything builds on itself.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: It's a very systematic, laid-out explanation of Jesus.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: John, I use this phrase downstairs and it's working.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He writes like a trash panda.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: You'd have no idea.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: It's all over the place.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It's creative, it's here, it's there, he's in that bucket, he's in that bucket, he puts it together.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk about metaphorical things.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Um, the the writing description is amplification.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: So if he's gonna talk about light, he's gonna give you the topic of light, then he's gonna blow it up into you know three chapters.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: He's gonna talk about love, he's gonna blow that up into two chapters, and then he's gonna pull in text from his gospel message and just inform all of his writing.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: But the overarching theme is he's a pastor of multiple churches, and there is a problem going on.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I'm talking a lot, but I'm I'm not about to pull in two and three.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Second John is a specific letter to a home church, and it's written to a woman who is taking care of that home church, and he says, Hey, there are people, he said, first of all, I commend you for all the work you're doing.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: He said, But there are people that are that no longer believe that are causing problems, and I do not want you to support them.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: That's that's the gist of Second John.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Third John is even better.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: He writes a letter to a guy named Gaius, which I wonder if that's where they got the character for the chosen.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: But he writes a letter to a guy named Gaius, who isn't the leader of a home church, but he attends a home church.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And John says, Hey, the guy that's leading that home church, and he's got a Greek name.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I can't say it because I can't.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Um You could, but you I could, but I'm not going to.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: He said, That guy's being a jerk.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: He's not listening to anything I have to say, and I'm sending people down there, and I'm gonna deal with him, but I want you to support those people.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: So he encourages Gaius.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: He says, You're doing a great job, and now I'm gonna send some people there, make sure that you take care of them, and just know that that guy, diatrezies or Diotrefesis.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Diotreficius.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: Diotreficius.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Dodge Rabusus.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Whatever, I don't know.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Whatever his name is, is uh is causing problems, and I'm gonna come deal with him.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Now here's what I love about this John is a pastor, he's trying to take care of churches, and it's a mess.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And now he's writing letters to try and fix it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It's is it's the most authentic, real set of letters about church problems and theology, people being jerks, uh, stuff like that that you you could ever imagine.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And I am here for it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: You've never related to anyone.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: I wonder if Dr.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Feces or whatever.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I can't say that.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I was wrong.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: That was terrible.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I wonder if he could say Scott.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how would he pronounce that?
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Feces.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: I might have said that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: I might have put you in the wrong way there.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: No, that's right, I forget it.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Tree Ephesus.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, Ephesus.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Ephesus.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, funny.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: John doesn't introduce himself in 1 John.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: And then second and third, you get you get a this is John.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's John, yeah, the elder, yeah.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: But not you don't get a whom Jesus loved, you don't get any of that.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: No, but he kind of writes that way still.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, first John, especially.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's you could have it could go right into the Gospel of John and fit exactly the same.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: When you were setting up the difference between that and Hebrews, I wonder of just thinking about the writer of Hebrews really speaking to the to the mind, to the head almost, and John speaking to the heart about it.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Although there is a real, as as we'll see, it's not just about what you believe in your heart, it's truly about walking it out.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's truly it, it's it it may be metaphorical, but it's very it's very in your world conversation.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Whereas the rhetoric Hebrews had you thinking about big concepts of sacrificial system.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: John's gonna talk about sin.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: If you sin, you're wrong.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: God's not in you.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: But but he's also the counterbalance is we all sin, so repent for your sins.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's some both sides of the coin, it almost feels like.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: So you have to know going in that John there's some h uh hyperbole or great Bible study this morning, it gave shape to what does it look like to be John, the son of thunder?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So we know John, if you go back to his story in the in the Gospels, was was a pretty verbose guy, uh, although he was the youngest, so maybe he was foreshadow overshadowed by Peter.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: But when when Jesus and the disciples are going through Samaria and the Samaritans reject him, John and his brother walk up and say, Hey, you want us to call down fire from heaven on these guys?
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Jesus is like, Wait, what?
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, you've missed the point.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: So that temperament is the same that probably carries through.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And so here's John uh pastoring Ephesus, which means he's old, possibly the last apostle still alive.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And um, and he's probably frustrated.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I walk and if you read verses one through four, he says, he says, we, so he could be talking about teachings that have been out there, the apostles' messages, but more than likely he's the last one living.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: He says, We were there, we saw him, we walked with him, we touched him, and we want you to be in fellowship like we were in fellowship, and that word is koinonia.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So the heartbeat of the message is he's trying to protect the unity of the church against these people that are causing division.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: So when you get into the strongly worded statements, that could be an urgency on his part uh where he's uh fighting uh for his church or the church.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: That's good setup though.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: A fun little uh nugget with just because you mentioned how he's how he writes, how he spoke.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: I read in one commentary that this is used a lot for first year Greek students.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: Uh okay.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: First John, because the Greek is so simple.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Like in its composition, but super profound and super deep in some of the the themes of it and the understanding.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: But apparently I don't know Greek.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to take that guy's word for it.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: That that they'll this will be a this is kind of a starting point of like trying to dig into the Greek is this letter, first John.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: So cool.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but speaks to your point of probably that pastoral heart of of trying to reach as many people as he can with making this a very deep understanding of of Jesus, which is a which is a thing that we it's not super easy to understand sometimes, but also to try to put it in language that everybody can understand, maybe.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And he's just, man, there's an urgency there, just like the writer of Hebrews, the big warnings.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's it's interesting that both of them have strong warnings.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And they just they deliver them.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: I feel like they could have spent a lot of time together.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Like they Yeah, you know, it's it's it's almost uh It's clear that it's not the same person though, because as vastly different of a writing as you could imagine.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Couple things with the he's you spoke to it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: He's he's combating a false teaching that that had gone through there, people that a church split, pretty obviously, people that were a part of their community and then had left and now are denouncing these things.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: Um one thing is the rise of of like Gnosticism, right?
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: Um, which is spirit is good, but everything all matters.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Jesus wasn't here in the flesh, so he was a spirit, right?
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: That's what they would say.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: Right, because all matter was evil.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: So if Jesus was good, he had to be all spirit, couldn't have been human.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: So there's that direct attack, which is why you directly see him say no.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: He was human.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: We saw him, we heard him, we've we touched him, and a direct correlation to that, and also, you know, we've we've seen him, we had fellowship with him, but then also that invitation to say you too can have fellowship with him.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: And then that fellowship, so that's cool.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: That's that coin and ea.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I wanted to talk about that because we've talked about that a lot with the around the table things and the koin and ea understanding of it's it's a shared life.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: It's it's not it's not so much a faith that you hold internally just for you, it's it's it's everything.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's the picture of the early church and it's and it's kind of counter to how we see things.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, we I think in it from our our Western perspective, we we start with ourselves and then we go out from there.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: The Koinonia held things in common.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Um, very, very uh community-based, connected resources, same same way as right after hurricane goes through, people, everybody's been leveled to the same level.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: And you jump out there and you love and you care for one another.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's the that's the goal.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: John is trying to call them into that same sort of relationship with Jesus while being upset that somebody's messing with it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: What I feel like it is.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: You see the the personal degree he takes that to.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Um so one thought, because I I think he's building to these ideas about, hey, okay, these things are true, and you're gonna have people saying they're not true.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: He's I'm the one that actually walked with them and saw it, and and we I can tell you it's true as an eyewitness.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: But it's like faith in Jesus is not just a set of beliefs or ideas.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: He's almost saying like this it's built around a real person who walked the earth.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Does that how do you think that then translates to maybe a deeper understanding or a deeper ability to walk that out?
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, you could see him trying to hold that line as in, hey, I walked with him.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: So there is a first person evidence that I was there.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Like, man, I I was there at that football game and I'm gonna tell you it's awesome.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Versus somebody that you're just telling about it.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: So John is trying to hold that that line as well.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Um I you know, I guess I'm trying I'm trying to remember what you just asked me, Jeff.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: I got um my brain just just went south.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: I I think I think John is contending as if you were the last one, okay.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I know I know where my thought is.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: The way the apostles in the early church wrote, and you want this is just theory, so this is 100% maybe, that's what we do, right?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Paul for sure, but many of the apostles, he's coming back tomorrow, next week, we don't know when, but it's soon.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And they had this sense of urgency about them.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: So when you get to John and he's the last one, you you wonder how long you can bang that drum.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Now we we still believe he's coming back, but but we live with the expectation that there's transformation, there's work to do on this side.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: So we shape the message a little differently.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Imagine if I if I was if I was in your world every day saying, He's I mean, man, like you gotta get yourself ready.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: After a while, you'd be going, okay, where's this guy at?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: He's not coming back.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Um you wonder how some of that carried in the message, because even here, he has these overtones of of saying that he's gonna return, that we know he's gonna come back.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: So the the message starts to shift and it dives more into the let's be aware of of how life is going to carry on.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So John, as the last apostle, seems to be setting that in my in motion about sin, righteousness, living into the commands, um being aware of false teachings.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: He calls them anti-Christs, or I I like to use the word anti Messiah, because we think of Antichrist as some weird book in Revelation.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Yep, you know, thought in Revelation.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we think of it as a singular person or you know, whatever.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And for him, it's those who are anti-Jesus as the Messiah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: It's more specific.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And it was, yeah, it was multiple people, it was a whole movement, it was all they are walking away from Jesus.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: So when he said that, that's what he meant in that context.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: So if we were to carry that very same thought over, we know people that are anti-God or anti-righteousness or whatever, that or better do the things counter to God.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: We maybe wouldn't call them the antichrist, although that's kind of the pretty similar topic.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: But you antichrist carries a different meaning for us.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: So all that's in there too.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know how much of this we we'll jump into scripture here in a second.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: But the natural split, and there is no natural split, by the way.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, the two big topics after you get through the introductions and a few little small pieces in between in the close are love and light.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: And really, it's it's reversed, it's light and love.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: So if you if you look at first John chapter one, verse five, the uh first four words of that sentence are this is the message.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And then he goes on to tell you that the message is that God is light.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: If you skip over to chapter three, verse eleven, you get the same four words.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: For this is the m for this is the message.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: That's that's five words, Scott.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Preachers.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Preacher is usually you don't care.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Um no, that one is for uh this is the message, and this one is for this is the message.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And then he goes on to say that God is God is love.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of a natural split when the metaphors tend to go one way or the other.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: But what I've found the best way to read this or to understand it, make it up, is to go through, and you can see if you're gonna read in my Bible, I'm coloring, I'm drawing, I've got lines going to different places.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Find a main point and then read ahead of it and read behind it, and then box it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: And what you'll realize is there's that main point, and then he gives you stuff around it.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Get on over and find the next point.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And what I'm gonna probably do on Sunday is say, God is light, here's the six or five or seven main thoughts that he has to say, and when you hear them, you go, makes sense.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: When you get into the detail, you go, ah, like it it causes you to really have to process because of the strength of some of the things that he says.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: What do you want to do, man?
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's not he's not soft in in his in what he's very sure about.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: That's that's a that's a very software.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Which I don't know, all the all the Bible writers are pretty pretty confident in what they have to say.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, he did walk with them.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Um well, I don't know.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: You covered a lot in one.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Do you want to talk about let's talk let's get to where you have these concepts.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: It's almost like he's he's taking um, I don't want to call them like invisible claims about faith, but like claims you make about faith and then kind of putting you to the fire about it, you know, to say, okay, you say you know God, then what does your life look like as someone who knows God?
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: You say you have fellowship, you say you have fellowship with God, so are you walking in the light then?
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: And it it kind of reminds me of that.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Um if you ever heard of the person that's like, yeah, I love God, I just don't like his people.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: You ever heard that guy?
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: I've said that.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: And but it's almost like we've all felt that.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we've all we've all felt that.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, I should say, yeah.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Um but do you feel like his message here is kind of like, hey, that's not how this works.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: Like, if you love God, then guess what?
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: You gotta love his people too.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: And it's and it's a it's a uh there's a there's a theological overtone of the first thing you need to know is recognize that we are sinful.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: And so let's just go ahead and know that the work that Jesus did covers that sin.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: If you're a believer, it covers that sin.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: And he says, that's how he closes chapter one.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: He says, if we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: So he establishes that principle.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: You almost have to write that down.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: And when you get when you read something that sounds like it's opposite of that, go back and realize he knows that Jesus is the one that forgives sins.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: But he's but he's pointing at, I'm still trying to flesh this out.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: He's pointing at the person that has claimed to know Jesus, but is gonna say, Well, I don't sin, or and then does, or doesn't recognize that we're we're still broken, and that sin goes that that Christ paid for that sin.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Because you you look at, um, let's see, let's find one.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: This is this is getting to his commandments, but verse three of chapter two says, Now by this way we may be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And then listen to four.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Whoever says I have come to know him, but does not obey his commandments is a liar.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And in such a person, the truth does not exist.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: In my life I know I've messed up and maybe broken commandments.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: But you're gonna say to me that the truth that the truth does not exist in me or that I'm a liar?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe on principle, that's true.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: If I don't recognize that I'm a li I mean that I'm I'm sinful.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: But it so there's a lot of there's a lot of that that's going on.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: And I just there's a there's a there's a piece in me that feels like John is John is calling people to an authentic faith.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: If you say it, live it.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're gonna make mistakes and know that Jesus paid for it, but you better live it out.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Live in and the topic, the topics, obey his commands, uh love one another, do not be friends with the world or do not love the world.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: Um so those big topics that he writes a lot about, they're pretty simple for us to hold on to.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: They're not they're not rocket science.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: I think he's to me it reads too as as something that is really evident of your life has to be evidence, and and to some degree it's evidence of what you believe.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: And they're probably better.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: moments and worst moments of that, you know?
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: And then because I mean how often do we maybe this has happened to us or someone we know, it's that's not that's not who I really am.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: That that's not who I you know who who I am that's not the real me.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Do as I say it, not as I do.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Uh huh.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: Um so we have these we come to those moments of of where our actions didn't meet up maybe with what we you know know to believe in our hearts or something like that.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: So I th I think in the context of of of these people now coming to claim like ah this isn't true and Jesus wasn't really a didn't come as human and and those things he's he's trying to maybe connect better what a claim about God would be and then how that actually shows up in the world.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah I mean on it on his topic of loving one another he says but whoever hates another believer is in the darkness walks in the darkness and does not know the way to go.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Because the darkness is brought on blindness.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Um that's strongly worded to say you better not love your brother hate your brother and sister.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: So there's a love there's a thought there's very strongly worded encouragement to live into your faith.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: And I think at the end of the day it is it sounds harsh but I think he's trying to reassure believers.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Because if you're so sure about that believing about that about Jesus even though there are times where we're like ah I messed up I messed that up wish I could take that back you know that he's reminding you hey Jesus cleansed you from all of those things so don't act like he's not or he hasn't you know yeah I I I feel like in in oh man when you get so verses chapter two verses 12 through 14, this is that encouragement moment, right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Like imagine you're a dad or you're a preacher or you're talking to an organization and you're just like guys you know this to be true.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: You know this to be true.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Um uh stop doing that stop doing that and then you get to this 12 through he says I'm writing to you little children so whatever however you address and you say because your sins are forgiven on account of his name you you know this right the verse verse 13 because you know him who is from the beginning and and become and the next the next one because you have conquered the evil one because you know the father because you know him who is from the beginning and because you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the evil one.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: So it's an encouragement to say you've experienced this like this is a part of your life.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: So the things I'm teaching you about don't abandon those things and walk away and go back to or follow that group that's trying to split you and to go into a different direction just feels like he's he's kind of drawing that line.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: And it's the invitation is to all yeah young in the faith brand new childlike and mature in the faith older.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Yep everyone yep his his his his next thoughts are hey there's some people here that are antichrists or anti-Messiah they're causing problems but listen you have an advocate right you've got someone that can help you you don't need someone to teach you about these things the the one who is an his anointing is gonna is gonna share with you all the things that you need to know which is a great encouragement.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: It's like you you know better than this you're prepared for this you can handle it.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: And then he then the next one you're you're children of God and the next one so just be righteous as he is righteous.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And I've cut out all the words those are the main points in all of it.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah but like if you go back and you read the words you can get lost in the detail and I'm I'm convinced that that detail points more towards the crisis that they're dealing with the time frame that they're in last apostle strongly worded statement using a a writing style that was very popular during that cut time called amplification.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: So for us to just read it as Sunday reading I think some is lost on us.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Although we need to hear stop sinning.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah right if you say you're a believer there are things you ought not do.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: That's that's what he would say.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah and don't and you have to be honest with yourself.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah the whole light and darkness.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: As a believer who is sinful you can't be afraid to then step into the light or let the light reveal those things to you.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: It's the search my heart it's that prayer it's the being real with yourself and others that yeah and maybe the older you get the more you realize how sinful you are even when your life maybe looks 100% cleaner than it than it was but you still realize the depth of your sin is more so that's great.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: That's great insight.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: So it's interesting.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: The difference between writer Hebrews and John, um faith is the substance of things hope for the evidence of things not seen God is light.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Walk in the light as he is in the light, right?
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's a it's a metaphor versus faith.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Faith is the eyes that allow you to see the things that are unseen light diving into that and understanding walk in the light it he's giving you a metaphor that lets you see what is tangling you up, what's tripping you up two different ways to go about the same message.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: I mean they're very similar kind of it's it's a sermon.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: It's a sermon.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: You skipped over do not love this world section.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: I did you got anything for that I I think it's funny because um I it it's only two three verses but I I it's funny what the church has done to like quote air quotes about the world you know you kind of liken it to secular movies and secular music and the worldly stuff.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: But that's not that's not how he defines it because this is true for all of us.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: The world it does offer the pleasure physical pleasure and just pride in what we see and it achievements and possessions which I think is interesting because that's that's that's something we have to absolutely fight as well.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: We can't just discount as as things of the world to where we're gonna avoid because you can't you can't avoid that in yourself.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: You have to you have to be able to to rightfully place that.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: It's a theology that took a truth and made it something bigger than what it probably needed to be.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: It's a very simple understanding things of this world should not your your love for the things of this world should not surpass your love for God and then know the things of this world can also shape your your love for God.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: What do you say the desire of the flesh the desire of the eyes and the pride of riches uh comes not from the Father but from the world.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: So those things to to feed self feed self um you know when I stand in a river I love I I love God.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: I'm in the world and I I am enjoying that time and I would say I love the beautiful part of creation.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: But it reminds me and it brings me to the to the creator.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: So hopefully it Yeah because it's yeah because it's been reshaped and redefined for you.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: I mean the more you know and have walked the longer you've walked with God you then that becomes a different connection to your heart I think than than if it was just if you didn't have that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And then and then three just continues on in the thoughts.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: We're we're God's children live righteous.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: Um are we going through three this week yeah I didn't I didn't add I didn't add it into your notes but uh that's where I think the break is at 310.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna go one two and then three up to three ten.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And then next week we'll pick up three eleven uh through the rest of rest of the book.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Well I don't have any notes for that section because I didn't know about that.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Here's your notes that we are children of God now.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: And um just be righteous.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: I like that everyone who sins is breaking God's law.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Good luck with that Jesus came to take away our sins.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: He did I like that hold on to that one.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: That's good and there is no sin in him.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: So if you just live continue to live in him you won't sin but if you keep on sinning you don't know him or understand who he is there's a lot of funny there's funny statements in here about even like when he says um I've given you a new commandment although it's not really new it's old but also it is new.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: But it is new I mean that that one's hard to teach because you can't do that math.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: It's it's an old one but it's new but I'm not telling you something that's new but here it is it's new but it's old but it's the same thing.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: But it's not I I was confused on that you can't I what I say is that's where the Greek falls apart.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Blame it on the Greek.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Blame it on the Greek.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: I I think he just blame it on the translators.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: They didn't really know what to do to me I think that's him referencing Jesus I give you a new commandment.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: But the new commandment was not new.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Because he said the new command was that you love one another and by this people will know that you have love for God.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: Um but that commandment was the same.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: So maybe that's what he meant.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: It's a new one but an old one but a new one yeah here here's here these are these are fun texts.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Those have been born of God do not sin because God's seed abides in them they cannot sin because they have been born of God.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way all who do not do what is right are not from God nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: It's just declarative statements where you're just like what I do with that I think it's good advice that you gave to hold on to his main point.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah because you can get lost in that because then because John is such a pastor Son of thunder son of thunder uh he's clearly wanting to reassure those in the midst of what's probably a confusing time especially if they've they know these people that have left and now we're telling them no that's not that's not how it is really um so and the other the other piece I think they were they were kind of downplaying the seriousness of sin too that the false teaching group so I I I think that's probably why he's then saying hey you should stop sinning.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: Like especially if you're just you know I guess we always choose it but you know what I'm saying that unrepentant sin of of just falling back into that same pattern.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: So I mean is it do you relate to him just as pastoral because this is the thing that these are the cycles that we live under like I really I want to try and understand it, right?
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: But keep in mind it won't be long before he writes Revelation if he hadn't already who knows what the time frame he's a pastor people are jacking his church.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: He's seen all of his buddies and many of the women too just get slaughtered so then all and and then all of a sudden you you saw Jesus do the most miraculous things and then be killed you're the only one that was on the there.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: You were the only one that was at the cross John.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: And then you were the one at the tomb.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Now you missed it the ladies they figured it out but then eventually you saw him so you're the last one you're growing this church you're doing the thing he hasn't come back yet um there's a bigger design going on that John still probably hadn't reconciled he was human just like we were and now you got these jerks in the church that have just changed the theology and they didn't just change and leave they start to spread it through the rest of the church.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: So John is I like to think that he's going stop like man you guys know better than this.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: So don't give into it uh cut those people out quit supporting them you're doing a great job doing the things that you're doing that's that's second jo and third jour and and so there's those overtones that are there.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: The problem but it's not a problem the the thing that we need to do when we come alongside and start to read it is to hold it with an open hand and realize the challenge that they're facing.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: If if Scott as a pastor was here and our church was being split in two because people decided this Jesus thing is overrated and then they started to just split a wedge right down between the middle of church, you I might come out and write a letter and say guys you know better than this.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: You're children of God.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: You've been redeemed you believe if somebody tells you that they know the truth but their life doesn't match up with it, they're a liar that would be the context by which you would make that phrase.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: But when you read it sitting in Gulf breeze drinking coffee waiting for a hurricane to make landfall um maybe it doesn't sit the same way.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah and would you write a letter or would it be an email or a Facebook post?
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: What would what would you choose?
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: If it was if that situation was going on I would I would probably um put on a not a loincloth I'd probably put on some kind of camel skin and eat locus and and you know do we need that visual right now but you got it man you got it after all what we're about to face we needed that Demetrius or Datramaeus or whatever that dude's name is John says I'm deal with that guy.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Oh man you imagine I wonder what happened with that probably nothing.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Or something John something crazy stuff yeah you probably forgot about it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: It took six months probably to get the letter so by that time you're like who yeah and by that time he had already written Revelation he's like you you think that's sad.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Check this out I moved on to something something bigger bigger much bigger um that's good dude I'm excited you got me excited about it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: I am too if there's a you know everything I know about it so I've got to go find some more stuff.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Okay if there's a uh if there's a a piece of advice did you give it already?
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: Is it the hold on to the main point?
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: But if there's a piece like to get not stuck on I guess is is that what you're saying as far as understand the time and the place this was written and it's gonna hit us differently.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Um I I think my piece of advice would be exactly what he's teaching.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: You you are children of if if you're a person of faith, you are a child of God, God's given you wisdom and discernment, read this book with all of that wisdom and discernment and then and then hold the hold the things in context doesn't mean they're not true.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: Hold them in context and realize why they're worded the way that they are it is a really cool thing we didn't really even talk about it but that you know when he says Jesus is the paraclete or the the advocate it's a word he used in John for the Holy Spirit is that paraclete um you do that yeah and so and then going back to it he's like you guys have this in you so you can discern for yourself.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: And I don't think he's telling you don't teaching is not good because he's a teacher.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: And so it's it's kind of that both sides that you're talking about that amplification of him saying he's not even though he's saying you don't need a teacher you know it yourself he's not downplaying the need for that or the the use that God has in his kingdom for that but also really cool truth to take away of like you can be guided by that spirit that's in you if you have questions about what's true.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Like you know don't be afraid to to seek that out and to to put that to the test.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: I I think my favorite part for me is it shapes shapes kind of it allows you to kind of settle into that first century and wonder what it would have been like to know that he was in Ephesus a port city mostly gentile and they got a church thing going there and they're doing really good and they're catching people on the way through and they're talking about the gospel but then they spread out throughout you know modern day Turkey now in that area and now he's just he's sending notes back and forth to the churches.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: He's pastoring them and um you know in my mind I can I can connect to some of the feeling that he would have around that.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: So it makes sense when I read it and very rarely can you ever just kind of get a sense of what it was like but I I I could see this.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: I could see the frustration and um maybe even imagine if if he was the last one left or close to it um how he would have just been beside himself if people were starting to destroy the thing that we've worked so hard to build over all these years.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Um makes sense yeah well good man so we'll keep you guys updated as of right now plan to be here Sunday I know check the socials and um the website and all that we'll have we'll have all that yeah um absolutely called church figure out anybody'll answer now yeah love you guys yeah love y'all see ya
