- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome to Jack Dam. I'm Kinnannie Stevens. We have some
- 0:22Speaker 1: mothers joining us today as we go over our off
- 0:24Speaker 1: season list here. As we look into the off season
- 0:27Speaker 1: and what we're going to be doing for the to
- 0:29Speaker 1: do list, big thing number one is going to be
- 0:31Speaker 1: coaching vacancies. As we know the defensive staff here, Mike
- 0:34Speaker 1: Caldwell and his staff were let go. Also some offensive coaches.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Doug Peterson talked a little bit about coaching and what
- 0:39Speaker 1: he's looking for in terms of moving forward and about
- 0:42Speaker 1: fixing mistakes when they happen on the field.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You get down the road during the season, and sometimes
- 0:49Speaker 2: you do as coaches sometimes we say, you know what,
- 0:51Speaker 2: we'll get that in the meeting. We'll fix that in
- 0:53Speaker 2: the meeting, and you do, you fix it. But I
- 0:57Speaker 2: want to fix it on the field. If Trevor makes
- 0:59Speaker 2: a poortousion on the field with a throw, let's let's
- 1:05Speaker 2: positive reinforcement. Let's let him get it again, even though
- 1:08Speaker 2: he knows exactly where to go with the ball. Let's
- 1:11Speaker 2: make let him make that decision differently. Right. So, but
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think sometimes we get we get caught up too much,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and you know, let's fix it in the meeting and
- 1:22Speaker 2: we'll fix it tomorrow, when when, in reality, we need
- 1:26Speaker 2: to fix it right then, Brian.
- 1:30Speaker 1: There's gonna be a lot of new coaches around here
- 1:32Speaker 1: next year. Doug talked a little bit more about the
- 1:34Speaker 1: philosophy of kind of fixing things as they happen, not
- 1:36Speaker 1: pushing or kicking the can down the road. What kind
- 1:38Speaker 1: of defensive coach should we see or could we see
- 1:41Speaker 1: come in here?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you know what you're gonna get is
- 1:43Speaker 3: somebody who says I want to attack. Has there ever
- 1:46Speaker 3: been a defensive coordinator at his introductory press conference that
- 1:49Speaker 3: didn't talk about attacking? I think what's interesting, guy, is
- 1:53Speaker 3: the market is flooded all of a sudden with coaches
- 1:56Speaker 3: because of the coaching vacuancies that are popping up in
- 1:58Speaker 3: places like Seattle, Tennessee, New England. It's a really competitive
- 2:04Speaker 3: time to go and find coaches because you not only
- 2:07Speaker 3: have these these these coaches who are retiring being fired,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but everybody's looking for replacements. So it'll be very very competitive.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I anticipate, and this could be wrong, but I've
- 2:23Speaker 4: been wrong with four Bryan. That's why you well once
- 2:27Speaker 4: in the seventies. But it I would be surprised if
- 2:31Speaker 4: it's not a coordinator with previous coordinator experience, just because
- 2:36Speaker 4: my callwell did not have that, and you would think
- 2:41Speaker 4: usually go in a different direction. It's sort of the cliche,
- 2:43Speaker 4: but it often happens. And Doug is very much the
- 2:46Speaker 4: type that once the defensive coordinator. Doug's gonna run the offense.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I was run the whole team, but he's not going
- 2:53Speaker 4: to get overly involved in the defense on a you know,
- 2:57Speaker 4: minute to minute basis. So I would think k that
- 3:00Speaker 4: an experienced coordinator.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Uh.
- 3:03Speaker 4: As Brian said at they'll attack. I'd never heard anybody
- 3:06Speaker 4: an impress or say we're gonna be passive on defense.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I would I would certainly perk up if that happened
- 3:11Speaker 4: next week or or uh two or three weeks when
- 3:13Speaker 4: IBE this happens. But I think I think it'll be experienced.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I don't know the scheme, but uh, a wise old
- 3:19Speaker 4: head I would think would be in that spot.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Let's go to big thing number two on our to
- 3:23Speaker 1: do list for the off season. Canna be free agents.
- 3:25Speaker 1: There's some big names here that'll be free agents. Josh Allen,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Calvin Ridley for one, Calvin Ridley talked about what he's
- 3:30Speaker 1: looking for in free agency and the fact he'd like
- 3:33Speaker 1: to stay Jacksonville.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Of course, I mean I learned these guys, Uh build
- 3:39Speaker 5: a relationships with relationships with them. I don't really have
- 3:44Speaker 5: really care to learn other people and plays and all
- 3:47Speaker 5: that other stuff right now. But uh, you know, God
- 3:50Speaker 5: is gonna find out where I belong. And you know,
- 3:53Speaker 5: if the money right, you know, I do need some
- 3:55Speaker 5: of that, we'll well, we're gonna figure it out. But
- 4:00Speaker 5: I got a definitely teach. There's all season for me
- 4:02Speaker 5: personally to get better, you know, so I'm coming back
- 4:05Speaker 5: and happy about my play.
- 4:08Speaker 1: If the money's right, he wants to come back, John,
- 4:11Speaker 1: is this a priority for this team? Obviously Josh Allen's
- 4:13Speaker 1: going to require a lot of money too, But Calvin
- 4:15Speaker 1: was really important to the offensive year.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Well, it's a priority to figure it out, and I
- 4:20Speaker 4: think they have to figure out if it's the right
- 4:22Speaker 4: fit and any free agent that's true of But it
- 4:25Speaker 4: seems like Calvin particularly, he was not the fourteen hundred yard,
- 4:30Speaker 4: fourteen touchdown receiver. I don't know if he was a
- 4:33Speaker 4: quote alful one. I do feel like there were games
- 4:38Speaker 4: that they would not have won had he not been here.
- 4:41Speaker 4: He's a thousand yard receiver. He showed at various times
- 4:45Speaker 4: a big play element. Was he a quote deep threat? No,
- 4:49Speaker 4: but he stood in the end zone a lot, and
- 4:52Speaker 4: you'd be careful to let that get out of your
- 4:54Speaker 4: building when it's in your building. So I don't know
- 4:58Speaker 4: what the money will be to know what Calvin will
- 5:01Speaker 4: think of his market versus what the Jaguars do, but
- 5:05Speaker 4: I think it's something they have to consider because he
- 5:08Speaker 4: makes plays and he's hard to cover.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And of course it's not just the money, it's if
- 5:13Speaker 3: you give him the multi year contract, he's gonna cost
- 5:16Speaker 3: you a draft pick. So as you look at where
- 5:18Speaker 3: he pardon me, as you look at where you're trying
- 5:21Speaker 3: to build your team, guy, you think, well, i've got
- 5:24Speaker 3: a first round pick and a second round pick. You
- 5:26Speaker 3: set him to a long term deal, we lose the
- 5:28Speaker 3: second round pick. So you've got to really carefully consider
- 5:31Speaker 3: not just what he was for you this year, but
- 5:33Speaker 3: what you think he can be in year two and three.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And you've got to be brutally honest with yourself because
- 5:38Speaker 3: if you want to upgrade the offensive line, and they
- 5:41Speaker 3: have to upgrade the offensive line, if you pay Calvin,
- 5:45Speaker 3: you're not going to have that second round pick to
- 5:47Speaker 3: get that done. So he is going to be a
- 5:50Speaker 3: lynch pin to your entire draft strategy as well as
- 5:53Speaker 3: your free agency strategy.
- 5:54Speaker 1: That's our final big thing today is we look ahead
- 5:56Speaker 1: to the draft because that is a little bit of
- 5:58Speaker 1: a draft dilemma because if you lose that second round pick,
- 6:00Speaker 1: then the focus only goes to that first round pick.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And this is a team that needs to build up
- 6:04Speaker 1: the offensive line. Although Doug Peterson did talk about the
- 6:07Speaker 1: offensive line earlier this week and he said he's looking
- 6:09Speaker 1: more for consistency than necessarily adding new pieces.
- 6:14Speaker 2: When guys are playing together for three games, it's not
- 6:20Speaker 2: long enough because then we're making another switch, right, another
- 6:23Speaker 2: gets hurt and we got to make another. And then
- 6:25Speaker 2: they're playing together for three or four more games, and
- 6:27Speaker 2: then cams out for four games with an injury or something.
- 6:31Speaker 2: And then you know, so the consistency and the continuity
- 6:35Speaker 2: that that's what that's what really drives the offensive line.
- 6:40Speaker 4: And and then and.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We've talked about it, and here too is you know,
- 6:45Speaker 2: as a staff, we got to get back to what
- 6:48Speaker 2: we feel are the best plays for for us as
- 6:51Speaker 2: an offense in our backs and and and sometimes we
- 6:55Speaker 2: get away, you know, we get away from that and
- 6:58Speaker 2: we uh, you know, we start searching for things that
- 7:02Speaker 2: to try to generate that you know, that run game
- 7:05Speaker 2: a little bit. But sometimes just just go back to
- 7:09Speaker 2: the basics sometimes, you know, things that we've been good
- 7:12Speaker 2: at in the past, because that's the that's the one
- 7:15Speaker 2: thing that we have the most reps on.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Typically, John that was a lot of talk about the
- 7:21Speaker 1: offensive line, But there has to be some needs there addressed.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Even if it is you have your starting lineup in
- 7:27Speaker 1: the building, if he really does believe that's to be true,
- 7:30Speaker 1: they need some backups because we saw a lot of
- 7:31Speaker 1: injuries on the offensive line. You imagine that has to
- 7:33Speaker 1: be where they look what they look for in the
- 7:34Speaker 1: first round.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Well, yes, I think that. And I got a lot
- 7:40Speaker 4: of feedback from what Doug said on Monday about the
- 7:42Speaker 4: offensive line. Oh how could he say there's not changes.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Here's how the off season works. Coaching vacancies are addressed immediately.
- 7:52Speaker 4: There's nothing. Doug gains nothing by coming out twenty four
- 7:57Speaker 4: hours after the season and saying I don't like this player.
- 8:00Speaker 4: I don't like this player. I like this player. There
- 8:03Speaker 4: is a time in the off season, in the three
- 8:05Speaker 4: or four weeks coming up before the combine, where they
- 8:08Speaker 4: will get together the decisions makers in personnel, this is
- 8:11Speaker 4: makes and coaching and figure out what the plan is.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I don't think the entire offensive line is back. Maybe
- 8:17Speaker 4: it is, but I would not necessarily take his comments
- 8:20Speaker 4: on Monday to mean it's set in stone that the
- 8:24Speaker 4: entire starting five comes back in the same way. Yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 4: I think the first round pick will be an offensive lineman.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Could be wrong, but that's the way I would go.
- 8:35Speaker 3: They had all season to fix the interior of the
- 8:38Speaker 3: offensive line. Phil Rauscher's reputation is that he's an excellent
- 8:41Speaker 3: offensive line coach. They couldn't get it done, which means
- 8:44Speaker 3: they don't have the players in the middle of that
- 8:46Speaker 3: offensive line. Sheriff is an aging veteran who saves you
- 8:51Speaker 3: fifteen million dollars on the salary gap. I don't see
- 8:54Speaker 3: him back. And Luke Fortner was dead roached on the
- 8:58Speaker 3: most important play of the season. I don't know how
- 8:59Speaker 3: you forward there. That's me saying it, not Doug. You
- 9:03Speaker 3: got to fix the middle of the offensive line, and
- 9:06Speaker 3: you'll hope that you can do that at number seventeen
- 9:11Speaker 3: and a free agency.
- 9:12Speaker 1: We'll go over some of those options coming up, and
- 9:14Speaker 1: we'll also look at the free agents that are both
- 9:16Speaker 1: with the Jaguars and coming available this season. To stay
- 9:18Speaker 1: with us here on Jagzam, we'll be right back after
- 9:20Speaker 1: the break. Welcome back to Jagzam, presented by Field's Autogroup, Jacksonville.

- 9:48Speaker 1: we try to recap everything for you from the regular season,
- 9:51Speaker 1: we look a little bit ahead to the postseason as well,
- 9:53Speaker 1: and we're gonna do a little bit of looking at
- 9:55Speaker 1: free agency. There's a decent number of names that are
- 9:58Speaker 1: on the Jaguars unrestricted for agency. The couple I've highlighted
- 10:01Speaker 1: for you guys to look at. Obviously, Josh Allen and
- 10:03Speaker 1: Calvin Ridley are going to be the big names, but
- 10:06Speaker 1: we talked about the offensive line. Ezra Cleveland is someone
- 10:08Speaker 1: that I would like to see back. If you guys
- 10:10Speaker 1: were kind of looking at this from what they have available,
- 10:14Speaker 1: Who's Who's some names that jump out to you.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Well, I mean, Cleveland's a guy that you know a
- 10:19Speaker 3: month in dim being here. They've always their best insure
- 10:22Speaker 3: at your offensive line, so I would say you've definitely
- 10:25Speaker 3: wanted him back. Smooth's a guy that in twenty twenty four,
- 10:29Speaker 3: Sorry about these boys, twenty twenty four should be a
- 10:32Speaker 3: year closer to being back after the injury last year,
- 10:36Speaker 3: and is a valuable guy and he's not going to
- 10:37Speaker 3: cost you a ton of money.
- 10:39Speaker 4: John.
- 10:39Speaker 1: There's a lot of interesting names, and we talked about
- 10:41Speaker 1: a little bit about this yesterday because some of them,
- 10:43Speaker 1: if they're cheap, you bring them back. Some of them,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know you're looking at your where do you go elsewhere?
- 10:47Speaker 1: I mean, I guess it's what's available.
- 10:48Speaker 4: But yeah, a lot of these guys are the kind
- 10:50Speaker 4: of guys you need, meaning they don't break the bank.
- 10:54Speaker 4: They're veterans who have been around. They're also I agree
- 10:59Speaker 4: with Cleveland. I think got Cleveland and Josh Allen are
- 11:02Speaker 4: certainly back. You already heard my thoughts on Ridley Smoot.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I hope is back. What you don't know about Dwan
- 11:08Speaker 4: and I hope this isn't the case. And Achilles, which
- 11:12Speaker 4: he had is often very hard to come back from
- 11:14Speaker 4: long term. He's an eighth year guy. Do they think
- 11:17Speaker 4: that there's more than what they saw? Is there going
- 11:20Speaker 4: to be an ascension right after that? Or is it
- 11:23Speaker 4: just what it is? I hope it's the I hope
- 11:25Speaker 4: it's the former. I hope he's back. I don't know Agnew,
- 11:28Speaker 4: I'm not quite sure on and I don't know. I
- 11:32Speaker 4: don't know about Brandon McManus, because this is a guy
- 11:35Speaker 4: who in November slumped at a very key time. Now
- 11:40Speaker 4: it was fifty yardfield goals. He's not a bad kicker,
- 11:43Speaker 4: but he's in his eleventh year, so you know, there
- 11:47Speaker 4: are decisions to be made. Do you go with what
- 11:49Speaker 4: you know or do you try to use those spots
- 11:52Speaker 4: for the fresh blood that there's going to be some.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Right, So there's for those those spots. Two sides of
- 11:58Speaker 3: the deal too. Jacks could one here back at a
- 12:00Speaker 3: certain number, and he could decide no, I can get
- 12:02Speaker 3: more than free agent market. So it isn't just whether
- 12:05Speaker 3: the Jags can make a decision to keep him. It's
- 12:09Speaker 3: whether he and the Jags can come to a conclusion
- 12:11Speaker 3: that works for both.
- 12:12Speaker 4: And a lot of that could be too. Last year,
- 12:15Speaker 4: McManus was clearly a case of look forward early in
- 12:19Speaker 4: the off season. It didn't hit right in the draft.
- 12:21Speaker 4: I think they I think they would have liked to
- 12:23Speaker 4: have drafted a kicker. Didn't quite work out. So do
- 12:27Speaker 4: you say we are committing to bringing two or three
- 12:31Speaker 4: young guys in here figuring out and starting that, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 4: let's get a cheap kicker for four or five years
- 12:38Speaker 4: and then ascend from there. I don't have a gut
- 12:41Speaker 4: on brand. I think I think that will be a
- 12:44Speaker 4: decision that plays out based on how they do in
- 12:46Speaker 4: the off season.
- 12:48Speaker 1: As we look ahead. I think we also have to
- 12:50Speaker 1: mention with a new defensive coordinator, they might have a
- 12:52Speaker 1: hand in some of who they're bringing back. Right when
- 12:54Speaker 1: it comes to free agency, I'm sure Josh Allen we
- 12:56Speaker 1: priority number one. We heard from Josh Allen this year.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It really feels like kind of a grow point for him.
- 13:00Speaker 1: He talked a lot about, you know, understanding obviously he
- 13:03Speaker 1: had a personally a great season, but kind of not
- 13:06Speaker 1: wasting these years and and he also talked about the
- 13:08Speaker 1: importance of playing really good football later in the year.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Games are meaningful in December, that was our that was
- 13:15Speaker 6: our main focus last year. I mean, played meaningful games
- 13:19Speaker 6: in December, December and February, and you know, and when
- 13:22Speaker 6: we got in this situation this year, I think the
- 13:25Speaker 6: focus changed on going back to the fundamentals and doing that.
- 13:28Speaker 6: So it was kind of took a little step back.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Uh So for us man is to to at the
- 13:33Speaker 6: end of the day, the goals to win.
- 13:37Speaker 1: What Josh and Trayvonn were able to do this season
- 13:39Speaker 1: very impressive.
- 13:40Speaker 4: John.
- 13:40Speaker 1: When you're looking at a DC candidate, obviously that's gonna
- 13:43Speaker 1: be what it's centered around. This job is centered around
- 13:45Speaker 1: those two guys and and what you can build around
- 13:47Speaker 1: with them. What kind of coach would would be best
- 13:49Speaker 1: or is there a name or anything that you think
- 13:51Speaker 1: would be helpful for them kind of getting this defense
- 13:53Speaker 1: to where.
- 13:53Speaker 4: It can be. Well, I'm not sure in names, cause
- 13:55Speaker 4: it's it's so far out. I think the uh prototype
- 13:59Speaker 4: or uh, you know, the type will be experienced guy.
- 14:04Speaker 4: So much of the NFL now is based on Nickel,
- 14:07Speaker 4: So I'm not that tied end to whether it's a
- 14:10Speaker 4: three four guy four to three guy in base I
- 14:14Speaker 4: think what the defense corner has to be happy about
- 14:16Speaker 4: is you've got two edged guys who are not only
- 14:22Speaker 4: good pass rushers, but they're good run defenders. They are
- 14:25Speaker 4: not guys who you come in and, oh, we have
- 14:27Speaker 4: to work around their skills. You can put them on
- 14:30Speaker 4: the edge and they can do whatever you ask them
- 14:33Speaker 4: to do. Are they the best tandem in the league.
- 14:37Speaker 4: I think they're up there no matter who comes in.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I mean I kind of got off track. Leslie Frasier,
- 14:44Speaker 4: who I worked with in Indianapolis, is out there. He's
- 14:47Speaker 4: an experienced guy. He has run innovative schemes, he can lead,
- 14:52Speaker 4: He's good at the front of the room. That's my
- 14:55Speaker 4: personal knowledge of him, so I would I would look
- 14:58Speaker 4: at him. I don't know some of the other candidates
- 14:59Speaker 4: who out there, but Leslie fits that prototype. A guy
- 15:02Speaker 4: who's been a head coach can stand in front of
- 15:05Speaker 4: the room and can run the defense and that Doug
- 15:09Speaker 4: can trust him to run the defense well.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And wing Martindale's inna sure people are familiar with giants.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Ravens runs a three four hybrid system that would fit
- 15:19Speaker 3: Trayvon in. He's gonna have to get more out of
- 15:22Speaker 3: Foaya and more out of Devin Lloyd because their linebacker centric.
- 15:26Speaker 3: But he would fit with John was talking about earlier,
- 15:28Speaker 3: which is to have a coach you could just run
- 15:31Speaker 3: it go and.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Do his thing.
- 15:32Speaker 1: It is almost someone you'd imagine would be like, not
- 15:35Speaker 1: necessarily another head coach in a sense, because the Doug
- 15:38Speaker 1: kind of wants to focus on the offense and have
- 15:41Speaker 1: the defense kind of be its own thing, and that's
- 15:44Speaker 1: the way they run this. But you need to have
- 15:45Speaker 1: someone that's experience and maybe been a head coach before,
- 15:47Speaker 1: or at least been a very experienced coordinator, and it's
- 15:50Speaker 1: able to come in and do that and command that
- 15:51Speaker 1: respect right out of the key well.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And it's hard to know unless you've been around a
- 15:56Speaker 4: guy what kind of a coach he is. But it's
- 15:59Speaker 4: clear from listening to Doug that he thought in many
- 16:03Speaker 4: areas on the team, attention to detail and attention to
- 16:06Speaker 4: fundamentals got away this year when he talked about going
- 16:10Speaker 4: back during practice and making sure something was right. Is
- 16:15Speaker 4: the defensive Cordner sebody who believes in that? Is he
- 16:18Speaker 4: a teacher? Is he fundamentally focused? Is he comfortable running simple?
- 16:23Speaker 4: Because it sounds like this defense needs to be simple.
- 16:25Speaker 4: I'm not sure that it needs to be complex. Is
- 16:28Speaker 4: he a guy that can do both? Can he start
- 16:30Speaker 4: simple and get more complex? I think those are the
- 16:32Speaker 4: question he's asking. It's hard to know when you see
- 16:36Speaker 4: a list of names, if you're not in the interview room,
- 16:39Speaker 4: it's hard to know how that's meshing. But I think
- 16:41Speaker 4: that's going to be a huge priority for what Doug's
- 16:43Speaker 4: looking for.
- 16:44Speaker 1: All right, say with here on Jagzam coming back, we'll
- 16:45Speaker 1: hear some of the parting words from the players as
- 16:47Speaker 1: they cleaned out their lockers earlier this week. Welcome back
- 16:53Speaker 1: to jag Zam. For ten years, dream Finders Holmes has
- 16:55Speaker 1: been how to call themselves the official homebuilder of the
- 16:57Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars. You can visit dreamfinders homes dot com for
- 17:00Speaker 1: all of the available inventory and go jackson Being back
- 17:05Speaker 1: to Jagsam presented by Jet Home Loans, we're going over
- 17:08Speaker 1: the end of the year. The locker clean out was
- 17:11Speaker 1: earlier this week and we got to hear from some
- 17:13Speaker 1: of their players about, you know, the end of the season.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It was tough way to end things, losing five of
- 17:17Speaker 1: your last six and missing out of the playoffs. In
- 17:19Speaker 1: that final game, Christian Kirk always won. It's good with
- 17:22Speaker 1: words and a little bit of wisdom in that locker room,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and he said, you know, they still haven't figured out
- 17:27Speaker 1: a lot of the whys for this team, but that's
- 17:28Speaker 1: something to look at in the offseason, and obviously things
- 17:31Speaker 1: need to change next year.
- 17:34Speaker 7: It's hard in football to just be able to pinpoint
- 17:37Speaker 7: on one certain thing this is the reason why we
- 17:39Speaker 7: started winning games, or this is the reason why we
- 17:41Speaker 7: started losing games. And I think that goes to say,
- 17:45Speaker 7: you know, everybody wants to talk so much about last
- 17:47Speaker 7: year and you know how we all of a sudden
- 17:49Speaker 7: switched our season and became a new team and got
- 17:51Speaker 7: into the postseason. Nobody could still give you an answer
- 17:53Speaker 7: why that actually happened. And even statistically and factually, you
- 17:57Speaker 7: can't go and look and say, oh, this is why.
- 18:00Speaker 7: So I think we all you know, I think there's
- 18:03Speaker 7: a sense and a nature of you know, at some
- 18:05Speaker 7: point it's going to happen, and that's not how football works.
- 18:08Speaker 7: You got to go out there and you got to
- 18:09Speaker 7: take it and eventually, you know, it'll expose you. And
- 18:13Speaker 7: the NFL is hard, and we.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Just weren't ready, John, I know you were there for
- 18:18Speaker 1: that when Christian said they still hadn't figured out why
- 18:20Speaker 1: they made that crazy run last year, and then everybody's
- 18:23Speaker 1: kind of relying on that a little bit, and that's
- 18:25Speaker 1: not how it.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Works, yeap. My impression from listening to Christian, from listening
- 18:29Speaker 4: to Traves YTM different guys, and then from listening to
- 18:32Speaker 4: Doug all year, this is such a hard league to
- 18:35Speaker 4: win in, and it's such a game of moments in
- 18:39Speaker 4: a game of inches, you know, and over a seventeen
- 18:42Speaker 4: game season, you're gonna lose a couple, you're gonna win
- 18:45Speaker 4: a couple of big and then a lot of the
- 18:46Speaker 4: games come down to moments plays and everybody's heard every
- 18:51Speaker 4: coach we've ever been around talk about you don't know
- 18:53Speaker 4: when those big plays are. Doug talks so much this year,
- 18:56Speaker 4: and Christians sort of alluded to it of guys just
- 18:59Speaker 4: not fully grasping the sense of moment and the urgency.
- 19:06Speaker 4: And I don't know if I'm even using the right words,
- 19:07Speaker 4: but maybe it's coming through and I'm trying to say so.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I think what the veterans hope is that there are
- 19:16Speaker 4: more guys all season who understand the importance of every moment,
- 19:20Speaker 4: and I think that's what they think lacked. A lot
- 19:24Speaker 4: of the leaders were talking about that. I think it's
- 19:27Speaker 4: gonna be the messaging next year, and I think that's
- 19:28Speaker 4: what they want to get fixed. And I'm not sure
- 19:30Speaker 4: how to fix it, but it feels like that's gonna
- 19:32Speaker 4: be the theme next year.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Well, let's see if I can get this sentence out
- 19:35Speaker 3: before my voice goes. I think the guys enjoyed the
- 19:39Speaker 3: position this team was in that they had built last year,
- 19:42Speaker 3: and I think they felt like they were had arrived.
- 19:46Speaker 3: They were one of the best teams, and I'm not
- 19:49Speaker 3: sure that they knew what it took, as Doug said,
- 19:53Speaker 3: to not just be where you were, but to go
- 19:55Speaker 3: where they are. And their record this year against the
- 19:58Speaker 3: best teams Jeeves in the Ravens, I've talked about it.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Ad Nausea wasn't good. They didn't compete, and I don't
- 20:05Speaker 3: think that they transitioned from the hunter to the hunt dead.
- 20:10Speaker 3: They didn't understand what it took. They were happy to
- 20:13Speaker 3: be here, they were satisfied. I felt that you can't
- 20:17Speaker 3: be that. There won't be now this all changes now,
- 20:21Speaker 3: there can't be anymore. Hey, we're just happy to people
- 20:24Speaker 3: have us high in the power rankings, that they have
- 20:27Speaker 3: us on primetime television, that our games are sold out.
- 20:30Speaker 3: It can't just be all the accouterments. It's got to
- 20:32Speaker 3: be the meat, not just the sizzle.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And to stay at that status, g R.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It takes a lot more work.
- 20:38Speaker 1: We are getting a little bit more from the players
- 20:40Speaker 1: in terms of, you know, speaking now that things are
- 20:42Speaker 1: done about how the season went. And Calvin's always pretty honest,
- 20:45Speaker 1: which is nice to hear from people, to just kind
- 20:48Speaker 1: of unfiltered answer, and he talked a little bit about
- 20:52Speaker 1: this team getting tired and kind of what they went
- 20:54Speaker 1: through the end of the season.
- 20:57Speaker 5: We don't feel good all the time, you know, you injuries,
- 21:00Speaker 5: your team is not always together, and it's just the
- 21:03Speaker 5: weeks are just hard. And you know, somewhere in those
- 21:08Speaker 5: weeks we kind of lost it, you know, I think,
- 21:10Speaker 5: and uh, we just we we couldn't know those moments
- 21:17Speaker 5: that we needed to and we just needed our juice.
- 21:20Speaker 5: We didn't have the juice I felt.
- 21:21Speaker 1: So I don't know Telvis says they didn't have the juice,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but whatever you want to call it, I mean, we
- 21:27Speaker 1: all felt something was going wrong, and it's nice to
- 21:30Speaker 1: obviously when you're in it. I'm sure the players don't
- 21:32Speaker 1: want to admit that, but they felt it too right.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And now that you're away from it, you can kind
- 21:36Speaker 1: of look back, think about what that actually was John,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and try to address it. Because when you're in it,
- 21:41Speaker 1: maybe you're like, oh, we can fix this, let's not
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know, go overboard with it. But now you can
- 21:44Speaker 1: look at it objectively and be like, yeah, something was up.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Well, it's always the big mystery when you're in a
- 21:49Speaker 4: streak like that had to pull out of it, and
- 21:52Speaker 4: when you win, it tends to build one way, and
- 21:56Speaker 4: then when you lose, it's sort of go the other way.
- 22:01Speaker 4: They didn't play bad against Cincinnati. They didn't play I
- 22:04Speaker 4: mean overall the events didn't play well. Was you know
- 22:06Speaker 4: what I'm saying it was it was a tight game
- 22:07Speaker 4: against a team that finished nine and eight. They didn't
- 22:11Speaker 4: They played awful against Cleveland, but were close, so you
- 22:14Speaker 4: felt like it was still there. And then something with
- 22:16Speaker 4: Baltimore the way they pulled away at the end. They
- 22:18Speaker 4: never got it back after that. But I almost feel
- 22:21Speaker 4: like if the Baltimore loss had been on its own,
- 22:25Speaker 4: it wouldn't have had that building feeling in the locker room,
- 22:28Speaker 4: but you did get the idea of it's slipping away
- 22:32Speaker 4: and them not knowing quite how to grab a hold
- 22:34Speaker 4: of it and turn it around. If the field goal
- 22:38Speaker 4: goes through against Cincinnati, yeah maybe it changes. Then everything
- 22:43Speaker 4: sort of feels different, But that's not the way the
- 22:45Speaker 4: league works. Well, is what you get.
- 22:47Speaker 3: As it slipped away, It was the same things. It
- 22:49Speaker 3: was the turnovers, it was the penalties, it was it
- 22:52Speaker 3: was the same mistakes.
- 22:54Speaker 4: So you press, you get, Hey, I've got to do it.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I've got to jump in this gap because I want
- 23:00Speaker 4: to make the play. And every coach I've ever been
- 23:02Speaker 4: around has always talked about how the one thing you
- 23:04Speaker 4: can't have is guys thinking that they have to do
- 23:07Speaker 4: more than what their job is. But yet, when you
- 23:10Speaker 4: get in a situation at the end of the season
- 23:12Speaker 4: where you've lost a bunch, human nature is Brian's voice
- 23:17Speaker 4: is bad. Well, I want to step in and make
- 23:18Speaker 4: a play to help him out. You know, That's that's
- 23:22Speaker 4: a natural feeling in a team sport sometimes that heck,
- 23:27Speaker 4: I gotta make a play here. Well, I thought where
- 23:29Speaker 4: I shouldn't throw it. I gotta make a play here,
- 23:30Speaker 4: I jump. I gotta make a play here, I jump
- 23:32Speaker 4: out of the gap. That was sort of the story
- 23:36Speaker 4: of the season. They'll reset it. I think the important
- 23:39Speaker 4: thing to remember is we wrap up. They're not one
- 23:42Speaker 4: in fifteen now they're nine and eight, So you're not
- 23:47Speaker 4: starting from the depths. It feels like the depths because
- 23:50Speaker 4: you lost five or six, but they were one play away,
- 23:55Speaker 4: not eight games away. Now, don't settle for that. But
- 23:58Speaker 4: it's not like you can't readjust and get this thing
- 24:02Speaker 4: going again.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Uh.
- 24:03Speaker 4: They're not the worst team in football, but they were
- 24:07Speaker 4: fairly it's pretty close to at the end of the season,
- 24:09Speaker 4: the way they were playing under twenty four.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Doug said he wasn't gonna settled, and he made changes
- 24:16Speaker 3: to the staff. They'll make changes to the roster. They
- 24:19Speaker 3: won't stand back, and.
- 24:20Speaker 1: They need to because change cannot only be coaching, cause
- 24:23Speaker 1: there has to be the players on the field as well,
- 24:26Speaker 1: and that goes to Trevor as well. He played hurt
- 24:28Speaker 1: a lot of this year. Very commendable, battling through at
- 24:31Speaker 1: least four different injuries, but there's question marks about his
- 24:34Speaker 1: development as the mistakes that he's made throughout the season,
- 24:37Speaker 1: He's being held accountable just like everybody else. Evan Ingram
- 24:40Speaker 1: talked a little bit about his quarterback and what he's
- 24:42Speaker 1: expecting to see from Trevor moving forward.
- 24:46Speaker 8: Honestly, in the in the adversity, there's a lesson to
- 24:49Speaker 8: be learned and there's growth to be had, and I
- 24:51Speaker 8: think a lot of things that we all experience, especially
- 24:54Speaker 8: Trevor experience this year. He has the right mindset, and
- 24:58Speaker 8: he has the right team around him and the right
- 25:02Speaker 8: you know, I think he has the right face to
- 25:05Speaker 8: understand that, you know, things happen for a reason, and
- 25:08Speaker 8: you know, we all can grow better for him. We
- 25:10Speaker 8: all can use this, like I said, part of our
- 25:12Speaker 8: story to enable us to truly be who is supposed
- 25:14Speaker 8: to be.
- 25:16Speaker 1: John. We talked a lot about this being a year
- 25:18Speaker 1: for Trevor to kind of establish himself, and now it
- 25:20Speaker 1: turns to next year and it really becomes that point
- 25:22Speaker 1: where when you're getting closer to extending him or whatever
- 25:24Speaker 1: you're gonna do with him in the future. Next year
- 25:26Speaker 1: is a huge year for him. It is, and you know,
- 25:29Speaker 1: it's so hard to judge.
- 25:31Speaker 4: I thought he was improving. I liked a lot of
- 25:34Speaker 4: things I saw until the high ankle spring, and then
- 25:36Speaker 4: he leaves three of the last five games with injuries.
- 25:40Speaker 4: I get one of things Trevor said at his locker
- 25:42Speaker 4: is people are gonna have opinions. They're not going to
- 25:44Speaker 4: be great. That's gonna be his off season. He knows that,
- 25:46Speaker 4: he gets it. I firmly believe he's still the guy
- 25:51Speaker 4: moving forward. But I also think both sides are now
- 25:55Speaker 4: in a situation where it's tough to pay that contract
- 25:59Speaker 4: because it's hard to know where it is. So I
- 26:02Speaker 4: don't know if they'll put it on hold. I could
- 26:05Speaker 4: see it being put on hold just to clear things up.
- 26:09Speaker 4: I can't imagine both fifty year options won't be picked
- 26:12Speaker 4: up Travis Etn and Trevor Lawrence. But to clear things up,
- 26:15Speaker 4: that's not a contract, that's just we want to make
- 26:18Speaker 4: sure you're here for that fifth year. So don't think
- 26:21Speaker 4: there's any money going out the window. It's not committing
- 26:24Speaker 4: to anything. It's just making sure these guys are here.
- 26:25Speaker 4: There's a little bit of fifty year money, but it's
- 26:27Speaker 4: not a long term deal. They'll do that. I don't
- 26:30Speaker 4: quite know what that conversation will hold, because once you
- 26:33Speaker 4: get into big quarterback money. Precedents don't always apply, so
- 26:39Speaker 4: they could figure out, hey, we want to make this work.
- 26:40Speaker 4: We would have some incentive to you. I don't know,
- 26:43Speaker 4: but I think they wait.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I do too, and they have the luxury of the
- 26:48Speaker 3: fourth year and then the fifth year option. So they
- 26:51Speaker 3: want to pay him. He wants to get paid, but
- 26:53Speaker 3: they need to see more and so you now have
- 26:55Speaker 3: the chance to improve and take the pressure off. Although
- 27:00Speaker 3: there's always pressure with the franchise quarterback, sure.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And we'll deal with that as the season moves forward
- 27:05Speaker 1: into twenty twenty four. Stay with us. We'll come back
- 27:08Speaker 1: after the break. We talk to you a little bit
- 27:09Speaker 1: about what's going on in the off season. Here and Taglams.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Tags fans.

- 27:22Speaker 1: Chair is furniture for fans. You also want to take
- 27:25Speaker 1: a moment to honor our Florida Lottery High School Scholar
- 27:28Speaker 1: Athlete of the Week, Jackson Copeland. Jackson has proven academic excellence,
- 27:32Speaker 1: dedication to the community, and demonstrated leadership on and off
- 27:35Speaker 1: the field. The Bright Future Scholarship Program, which is primarily
- 27:38Speaker 1: funded by the Florida Lottery, assists students in pursuing post
- 27:41Speaker 1: secondary educa channel and career goals. Jackson is hoping to
- 27:45Speaker 1: attend Florida State next year. Congratulations to Jackson, and we
- 27:50Speaker 1: are strongly going to the off season ourselves right now,
- 27:53Speaker 1: a little earlier than we would have liked, but we're
- 27:55Speaker 1: moving ahead.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Now.
- 27:57Speaker 1: What are we looking forward to? I'm looking forward to
- 27:59Speaker 1: kind of the the search for this coach, right and
- 28:02Speaker 1: that'll obviously be the focus right out of the gate,
- 28:04Speaker 1: because you got to get someone in here quickly and
- 28:06Speaker 1: make sure you get the guy that you want to
- 28:07Speaker 1: get and then kind of going from there.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Yeah, and I started building what I just talked about
- 28:12Speaker 4: about being nine and eight. There's a feeling that I
- 28:16Speaker 4: get from listening to fans like all hope is lost. Right, Well,
- 28:20Speaker 4: think about Bryan since I've been back and we've been
- 28:23Speaker 4: working together, which has been great, by the way, Well
- 28:26Speaker 4: you'd come back in twenty eleven, Well, think about the
- 28:30Speaker 4: off seasons that you went in and the roster that
- 28:33Speaker 4: it was in some years, this roster has Travis Tn,
- 28:37Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, Trayvon Walker, Foya, Lukan Evan Ingram.
- 28:44Speaker 4: There are pieces there, you know, and there's two outside
- 28:47Speaker 4: linebackers are good pieces, Travis etn. You know. My point
- 28:54Speaker 4: is there has been years where you were looking for
- 28:57Speaker 4: one guy who was on that level, right, So it's
- 29:01Speaker 4: not lost. You're not in the drags. You have to
- 29:05Speaker 4: figure out a way to make some changes. And basically
- 29:09Speaker 4: they figure out way to get the message across that
- 29:11Speaker 4: don't stay out of your own way. If they can
- 29:15Speaker 4: rebuild that, the future can still be bright. But there's
- 29:20Speaker 4: work ahead at the same.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Time, Josh and Calvin, just because the Salur Cavin general
- 29:26Speaker 3: Calvin because it impacks the draft strategy.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Sooner than later, so you can figure everything else out.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'd imagine as well, we're gonna take a brief break
- 29:33Speaker 1: here on Jagsam. We're gonna take a couple of weeks off,
- 29:35Speaker 1: but we'll be back after the super Bowl, so don't
- 29:38Speaker 1: we won't be without us for the whole off season,
- 29:41Speaker 1: but we'll take a couple of weeks off and then
- 29:42Speaker 1: we'll be back as we dive into that off season
- 29:44Speaker 1: and what they're gonna be working on. And we thank
- 29:45Speaker 1: you as always for joining us here on jag Zam.
- 29:47Speaker 1: See soon
