- 2:23Speaker 3: And the room leans in patrice grimball let it all begin.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Hey everyone, this is your girl Essie Bookout843.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And how are you? You guys, you guys, see, I
- 3:07Speaker 2: was going to wait until later and do this, but
- 3:08Speaker 2: I need to go ahead and do it now. I
- 3:09Speaker 2: am on a high right now. I'm literally on a high,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and I want to thank those who came out, okay?
- 3:17Speaker 2: So before I bring on my guests, okay, and ladies,
- 3:21Speaker 2: y'all go ahead and call your friends, your girlfriends, your
- 3:24Speaker 2: sister friends, your sister cousin, your sister from the other mother.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Go ahead and call all them and tell them to
- 3:30Speaker 2: tune into this podcast, okay? But this weekend was bananas,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you guys. So I don't know if y'all been following
- 3:40Speaker 2: me on social media. And if you ain't, check the bottom,
- 3:43Speaker 2: all my information. You never know what I might have
- 3:46Speaker 2: up my sleeve, okay? So me and two co-workers, right,
- 3:50Speaker 2: we came together. And last year, we presented something at
- 3:55Speaker 2: our staff day, right? And it was about authors of color, okay?
- 4:00Speaker 4: Romance.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Y'all know I'm kind of finicky when it comes to romance,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but I'll give the romance girlies their props, okay? So
- 4:09Speaker 2: from that one conversation to that presentation, we did this event, okay?
- 4:20Speaker 2: And the event was called Brown Sugar Black Romance. And
- 4:24Speaker 2: we had 15 plus authors, all of them from South Carolina.
- 4:30Speaker 2: They originated Live. State of South Carolina. 781 people. At
- 4:41Speaker 2: Kisame North Charleston Library came out. Did we think it
- 4:46Speaker 2: was going to be this big? Never in our wildest dreams, okay?
- 4:51Speaker 2: So I have a video that I'm going to post
- 4:54Speaker 2: later on tonight that's giving shout outs to everybody. I
- 4:58Speaker 2: was not the main coordinator. I'm going to say that.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I'm going to say her name is Shekinah Sidora Wright.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Y'all go grab her books. And then there was another coordinator.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Her name is Maya Hollinshed. Y'all go visit her at
- 5:11Speaker 2: Dart Libraries. But when three great minds come together and
- 5:16Speaker 2: we get other people to support us, listen, Charleston, y'all
- 5:21Speaker 2: came out and I say thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Thank you. Because y'all put the exclamation point. on a
- 5:32Speaker 2: lot of questions that people have. All right, we got
- 5:37Speaker 2: that out the way. Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies, Lord, y'all, ladies,
- 5:43Speaker 2: don't we go through some things in life? Don't you
- 5:48Speaker 2: feel that you are one person and you got 50
- 5:52Speaker 2: million stories to tell? Well, y'all, the author I have
- 5:58Speaker 2: coming up, this book is All the women. That's all
- 6:05Speaker 2: I can say is all the women. Tonight, I want
- 6:08Speaker 2: to bring up author Lori Hurt. Come on up. Come
- 6:13Speaker 2: on up, girlie. How are you?
- 6:16Speaker 4: I'm wonderful. How are you tonight? Excited.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Very excited. Y'all know when I get that big smile,
- 6:23Speaker 2: y'all know what's up, right? Y'all know I can't help it.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So before we go any further, Please tell us a
- 6:33Speaker 2: little bit about yourself.
- 6:36Speaker 4: So I am retired.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I live in Panama. I spent the better part of
- 6:44Speaker 1: my life in corporate America.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I'm a mom of two, a widow, an ex-wife, a sister.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I've been an artist my whole life, but I put
- 6:58Speaker 1: it on the back burner and only about two years
- 7:00Speaker 1: ago did I start writing again and am thrilled to
- 7:07Speaker 1: be able to share the work I do. The underlining
- 7:10Speaker 1: theme of everything I do is changing the conversation about grief.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So hopefully tonight I'll get to give you a peek
- 7:17Speaker 1: into that and we all can start some good conversations.
- 7:24Speaker 2: So I love she said that, you guys, because me
- 7:27Speaker 2: and her were talking behind stage, okay? So I know
- 7:31Speaker 2: many of you remember, and if you don't, I'm bringing
- 7:33Speaker 2: you back into my world, okay? I lost my cousin,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and this is a close cousin, okay, on June 17th.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And if you're very close to me, you know June
- 7:45Speaker 2: 17th is when I lost my best friend, my mentor.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So both of those things happening on that day, it
- 7:52Speaker 2: was awful. But when I was telling her behind the scenes,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I wanted to stop thinking of grief as a bad thing. And,
- 8:05Speaker 2: you know, football season is starting, and me and his fiance,
- 8:08Speaker 2: we still talk. And my mom would like to say,
- 8:13Speaker 2: she's kind of naked.
- 8:14Speaker 4: God bless her, too.
- 8:15Speaker 2: But we were laughing, and we were making jokes upon
- 8:18Speaker 2: him because she's still like the same team. But we
- 8:22Speaker 2: took that grief, and we made it to laughter. And
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm glad that she said that because a lot of
- 8:30Speaker 2: us is walking around with grief.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Okay?
- 8:33Speaker 2: And like I told her, grief does not necessarily mean
- 8:36Speaker 2: the loss of a loved one. Loss of yourself. Loss
- 8:39Speaker 2: of a job. Loss of economy. Loss of a vision.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You know, things like that. Why did you feel that
- 8:51Speaker 2: you needed to write this book to rewrite how we
- 8:56Speaker 2: see grief.
- 9:00Speaker 1: So I don't think I necessarily wrote the book itself
- 9:02Speaker 1: to rewrite how we see grief. I wrote it as
- 9:05Speaker 1: an example of how to carry grief with you, right?
- 9:11Speaker 1: So everything that impacts us is, it stays with us, right?
- 9:16Speaker 1: So think about the happiest day of your life, right?
- 9:20Speaker 1: The day your kid was born or the day you
- 9:22Speaker 1: got married, whatever that happy day is. And for so long,
- 9:25Speaker 1: it was Every morning, this is the joy, this is
- 9:28Speaker 1: the joy, this is joy, this is joy, right? But
- 9:31Speaker 1: after a while, it's not that the joy went away,
- 9:33Speaker 1: but it became a part of who you are. So
- 9:35Speaker 1: it went on the shelf over here. Grief is the
- 9:38Speaker 1: exact same thing, right? So the grief and the pain
- 9:43Speaker 1: that we feel, it stays with us. And, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 1: you can pull it up sometimes and it's as fresh
- 9:48Speaker 1: as it was day one. It never goes away, but
- 9:51Speaker 1: it sits on the shelf over here. So I got
- 9:54Speaker 1: my joy and I got my grief and my love
- 9:56Speaker 1: and all of that. And I wanted to take all
- 9:58Speaker 1: of that. and put it in perspective for people. I
- 10:03Speaker 1: wanted people to be able to say, you're right. I
- 10:06Speaker 1: can name that. I can identify it, see how it's
- 10:11Speaker 1: impacted me and move forward. I like that.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I like that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Now, you said that you had a kid. Which kid
- 10:20Speaker 2: are we talking about? See, I got two of them.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Well, let's see.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So the first one was easy. The second one, it
- 10:33Speaker 1: was easy. I think the joy with my second one, though,
- 10:36Speaker 1: was more because it was such a hard pregnancy. The
- 10:41Speaker 1: fact that she made it here healthy was, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: that was joyous. I was happy for the first one,
- 10:47Speaker 1: but I was happier at the result that I got
- 10:51Speaker 1: a healthy child.
- 10:52Speaker 4: When they told me that she wasn't going to be healthy.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Now, see, that's me and you. See, we just went, see,
- 10:58Speaker 2: same thing with her. I was, y'all, I was on
- 11:01Speaker 2: bed rest from November to March with this little chick.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So why are you telling my story?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Cause I was on bed rest at halftime at three
- 11:15Speaker 1: and a half months.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And at four months I was on bed rest for
- 11:19Speaker 2: the rest.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Of my pregnancy. Man.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Okay. So at three and a half months, I had
- 11:25Speaker 2: a scare at three months with her. And it was like, oh,
- 11:29Speaker 2: there's still a heartbeat. This mean, dang, this is, y'all literally,
- 11:34Speaker 2: there's a no limit soul genie. What is this? I
- 11:42Speaker 2: truly understand and was on bed rest from November. I
- 11:47Speaker 2: remember all my family went to Greenville for Thanksgiving and
- 11:50Speaker 2: And I'm sitting down here ordering Chinese food, looking at
- 11:53Speaker 2: a game, but I was mad. But I loved a
- 11:57Speaker 2: little chick like those ones. So what made you want
- 12:04Speaker 2: to become an author? I've always loved to write. As
- 12:08Speaker 2: a kid, it was my way of.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Expressing and processing the traumas that I lived. because I
- 12:20Speaker 1: had a very traumatic childhood. I wanted to keep writing,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but life's when you become an adult and it takes
- 12:29Speaker 1: money to raise a family. And we agreed that I
- 12:34Speaker 1: should get a real job, real job. And that's what
- 12:37Speaker 1: I did. But when I look at it, that was
- 12:40Speaker 1: the best decision I ever made because I could not
- 12:42Speaker 1: have written the way I write now if I started
- 12:48Speaker 1: back then. Yes, I had trauma, but it was unprocessed
- 12:52Speaker 1: and unhealed, and it was ugly. Now, I can take
- 12:56Speaker 1: the ugly and write beautifully and inspirationally for people.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Okay, okay. So, y'all, I'm about to bring up her
- 13:07Speaker 2: book cover. Y'all know I am a cover girl. Not
- 13:12Speaker 2: the makeup-wise, because this is about the most y'all make
- 13:14Speaker 2: it out of me, okay? But look at this cover
- 13:18Speaker 2: you got. Look at that. So I got it. All right.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I'm going to let her tell you guys about this
- 13:31Speaker 2: cover and the significant parts of the cover. Tell us
- 13:35Speaker 2: a little bit about it.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So when I designed the cover, I wanted something that
- 13:40Speaker 1: spoke to the brokenness and rehealing that we all did.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's something that's shaded and that's kind of dimmed which
- 13:51Speaker 1: is the coloring. But I also wanted to show the
- 13:55Speaker 1: little bits of hope, the sun in the background, the
- 13:59Speaker 1: fainted flowers. I wanted to show the history, the culture.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So you've got the Kemetic symbols in there. But I
- 14:10Speaker 1: wanted something soft. So that was the design of the writing,
- 14:13Speaker 1: something that's soft but strong. So when we were talking
- 14:20Speaker 1: and you were describing the things that you saw. And
- 14:22Speaker 1: he was like, I'm like, you absolutely got it. And
- 14:25Speaker 1: that makes me feel good because that means that what
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'm trying to do, the message I'm trying to communicate
- 14:31Speaker 1: is coming across.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Okay. So Mr. Eddie said, Miss Lori was my neighbor
- 14:42Speaker 2: from across the street back in Detroit. So your cover
- 14:54Speaker 2: speaks before you open your book. Tell us now a
- 15:01Speaker 2: little bit about your book. So All the.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Women I Have Been is a series of linked stories.
- 15:08Speaker 2: So it's.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Moments in Nefra's life that happen where there's a whole
- 15:16Speaker 1: lifetime that happens in a very short moment. Just as
- 15:21Speaker 1: the first chapter, for instance, she's, I'm sorry, the second chapter,
- 15:26Speaker 1: she's in an elevator. And in the course of going
- 15:29Speaker 1: those few floors, she has three lifetimes. She experiences three lifetimes,
- 15:34Speaker 1: three of her lifetimes, which is where I introduce some
- 15:38Speaker 1: of the characters that are in the book. And they're
- 15:43Speaker 1: moments that on the surface seem really small, but when
- 15:47Speaker 1: you stop and think about it, those moments are what
- 15:51Speaker 1: make up your life. So the book is like that
- 15:54Speaker 1: throughout the whole thing. You'll get whole stories that happened
- 15:58Speaker 1: in an instant. And that was my inspiration was one
- 16:01Speaker 1: day I was just like, you know how you have
- 16:03Speaker 1: those days you're just memory after memory after memory after memory.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You're, I don't want to say stuck there, but you're
- 16:08Speaker 2: in a memory mode.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And I the importance of those memories became evident to
- 16:13Speaker 1: me and I had to figure out how to put
- 16:15Speaker 1: it on paper and that's what I did.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So you talked about being a mother. You talked about
- 16:29Speaker 2: the disappointment of a relationship. You talked about the difference
- 16:37Speaker 2: between Well, let's go there because that really, really touched me.
- 16:42Speaker 2: The difference between longing and, oh, she dropped. We'll get
- 16:47Speaker 2: her back, you guys. Give me one quick moment and
- 16:52Speaker 2: I can add her back. Hello?
- 16:59Speaker 4: Hello?
- 17:04Speaker 2: So, well, I'll continue talking. So let me tell you
- 17:06Speaker 2: guys a little bit more about her book until we
- 17:08Speaker 2: get her back, okay? The character in her book, they
- 17:14Speaker 2: go through different series in her life, okay? It all
- 17:19Speaker 2: centers around a character named Nefira. And I know I'm
- 17:24Speaker 2: saying it wrong, and I do apologize. But she lives
- 17:27Speaker 2: so many lives inside one lifetime. And all of us women,
- 17:31Speaker 2: we do, okay? She goes from longing to love. And
- 17:37Speaker 2: that's the question I'm going to ask her as soon
- 17:38Speaker 2: as she comes back. Then she talks about how she's
- 17:43Speaker 2: building a family and trying to find and understand herself.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I can admit, I understand that fully. Once I had
- 17:54Speaker 2: my kids and when I was married, I literally lost myself.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Because I play so much into my family. Okay. But
- 18:06Speaker 2: now I'm a part of this and I'm finding bits
- 18:09Speaker 2: and pieces of myself that is astonishing, which is like,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I never thought I could speak.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Out in the open.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Like, this is brand new to me. And I love
- 18:20Speaker 2: doing it. I never thought I'd be able to interview
- 18:23Speaker 2: authors and enjoy reading all these new books. Books that
- 18:27Speaker 2: I would have never picked up if I was in
- 18:29Speaker 2: a store. So I was able to do that. Now
- 18:32Speaker 2: also this character, she goes through devotion, disappointment, passion, and partnership.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And then she's then left as a widow and have
- 18:47Speaker 2: to figure out what to do because the love story
- 18:51Speaker 2: is in. So all of this emotion, all of these
- 18:56Speaker 2: different parts of life is going on in this book.
- 19:01Speaker 2: And I feel that this is a great read for anyone,
- 19:06Speaker 2: mainly females, but anyone who's traveling through these points in life.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And like we said, grief is not only losing a
- 19:15Speaker 2: family member. She lost herself. She lost, um, her job.
- 19:21Speaker 2: She lost her love. She lost, um, herself when it
- 19:26Speaker 2: came to being a mother and what all these, this
- 19:30Speaker 2: one characters and all these things she was going through,
- 19:32Speaker 2: she had to find that courage to become whole again.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And that's where the work starts becoming whole again. You
- 19:41Speaker 2: have to put in that work.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:44Speaker 2: So I want to thank you guys for being with
- 19:50Speaker 2: us tonight we're going to bring um miss hurt back
- 19:54Speaker 2: again and we're going to continue to talk about her
- 19:57Speaker 2: book but again grab this she has a website i'll
- 20:03Speaker 2: put all her information at the bottom of the screen
- 20:06Speaker 2: where you can grab her books. She has a website
- 20:09Speaker 2: called laurihurtliving.com. She also has her books on Amazon, Barnes
- 20:17Speaker 2: & Noble, Bookshop.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Oh, and she's... Flickered and I lost everything. So I apologize.
- 20:35Speaker 1: You're on my phone now.
- 20:38Speaker 2: You're absolutely fine. Yes, you guys. She's in Panama. You've
- 20:44Speaker 2: been telling us for the longest. Get your supplies. Because
- 20:49Speaker 2: we in the States, we might be next. And y'all know.
- 20:53Speaker 2: What was that? Gary Indiana? That was not a powerful week.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Go ahead and get your stuff together. So we're not
- 21:00Speaker 2: going to keep you long. Because we know you need to... Right?
- 21:05Speaker 2: You are good. So what would you want readers to
- 21:10Speaker 2: take away from your book?
- 21:13Speaker 1: I want people to read the book and find something
- 21:16Speaker 1: that resonates with them and learn to appreciate that the
- 21:22Speaker 1: losses that we experience, the day-to-day losses, the little ones,
- 21:26Speaker 1: not the big ones. We know how to process the
- 21:28Speaker 1: big ones and we have... groups and books and things
- 21:32Speaker 1: to process the big ones. We don't have readily available
- 21:37Speaker 1: how to process the little losses, the loss of who
- 21:40Speaker 1: I thought I was going to be, the loss of
- 21:42Speaker 1: a community that we gave up, the loss of our
- 21:47Speaker 1: favorite toy for our little people. So I would like
- 21:52Speaker 1: them to be able to realize that you can celebrate
- 21:55Speaker 1: those small things and embrace those changes those moments of
- 22:03Speaker 1: grief that we haven't named as grief. And just change
- 22:13Speaker 1: the way we think about it. Because once you embrace it,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you name it, incorporate it, it's a lot easier to
- 22:18Speaker 1: move forward with it.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Wow. And that is true, you guys. You know, when
- 22:24Speaker 2: you think about it, we do have groups for losing
- 22:28Speaker 2: a family member, losing a child. We do have those groups.
- 22:32Speaker 2: But when it comes to things like a job and yourself,
- 22:38Speaker 2: for instance, the mother who murdered her kids, and I
- 22:46Speaker 2: haven't been following the trial, I have to say, but
- 22:50Speaker 2: I have yet to hear anybody say anything about therapy
- 22:53Speaker 2: efforts for this mother.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Not even just for the mother, but for the community,
- 22:59Speaker 1: for the people around them, because the one thing about
- 23:04Speaker 1: grief is other people's grief makes us uncomfortable.
- 23:09Speaker 4: But that's everybody's grief.
- 23:11Speaker 1: That woman killing her children, that's everybody's grief. That's grief
- 23:16Speaker 1: that children that we don't even recognize that they're going
- 23:19Speaker 1: to have a sense of loss, even if they didn't
- 23:22Speaker 1: know those children or know that family, That's a type
- 23:26Speaker 1: of loss that's going to be with them.
- 23:28Speaker 2: And that's really true. That's really true because when it
- 23:31Speaker 2: came down to my daughter, you guys, and my son,
- 23:34Speaker 2: I did not know that they were still grieving my
- 23:37Speaker 2: mother at their young age. I didn't know that. And
- 23:44Speaker 2: even my daughter, with the situation she may have in
- 23:47Speaker 2: her little life, she was going through some grieving process.
- 23:50Speaker 2: And it's not until you actually talk. And parents... Okay,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I'm going to put the book aside for a second, y'all.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Let me jump into this. Talk to your kids. We
- 24:04Speaker 2: don't know what these kids are holding into. And I'm
- 24:07Speaker 2: going to tell you right now, I realize that my
- 24:10Speaker 2: daughter and my son go through way more than I
- 24:13Speaker 2: went through.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Okay?
- 24:15Speaker 2: I had that childhood of going outside playing and not
- 24:19Speaker 2: have to worry about anybody snatching me up.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Okay?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Okay?
- 24:21Speaker 2: These kids nowadays, they don't have that outlet. But we
- 24:25Speaker 2: put them in front of computers and phones and stuff,
- 24:29Speaker 2: but we won't talk. Every day my daughter comes, flop
- 24:32Speaker 2: her big head on my bed and tell me about
- 24:35Speaker 2: her day. And I wouldn't change that for the world.
- 24:38Speaker 2: When I get off this podcast, sometimes she's in my
- 24:41Speaker 2: room and we might have already talked earlier. But believe
- 24:44Speaker 2: you me, the camera goes down and I am mommy.
- 24:48Speaker 2: So you guys, talk to your kids, okay?
- 24:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:53Speaker 2: So, I did have a question before you went out.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You said this statement. A woman learning the difference between
- 25:05Speaker 2: longing and love. Please explain that to the naive person
- 25:11Speaker 2: in me.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Please explain this. So.
- 25:20Speaker 1: When I say learning the difference between longing and love,
- 25:23Speaker 1: so we can long for something. We can want something.
- 25:28Speaker 1: We can reach for it. We can even attain it.
- 25:31Speaker 1: But loving something, it's stronger.
- 25:35Speaker 4: It's unconditional.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It's just different. It's knowing the difference between loving yourself
- 25:45Speaker 1: and longing for the person you want to be. I
- 25:47Speaker 1: love me where I am right now. I love the
- 25:51Speaker 1: broken me. I love the future me. And I love
- 25:54Speaker 1: the now me. I long for the woman that I
- 25:57Speaker 1: want to be, both physically, emotionally, spiritually. But I love
- 26:04Speaker 1: me right now.
- 26:05Speaker 4: And we have to learn to love me right now.
- 26:08Speaker 2: You have to.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Because if all you're doing is reaching for tomorrow, when
- 26:15Speaker 1: are you going to take time and appreciate today?
- 26:17Speaker 4: You're going to wake up and you're going to miss tomorrow.
- 26:19Speaker 1: All of your today's looking at tomorrow, which is kind
- 26:22Speaker 1: of what the book does is she's, she's experiencing those moments, good, bad,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and ugly. Those lifetimes of moments that she missed, but
- 26:34Speaker 1: now she's seeing them and experiencing them and recognizing them,
- 26:38Speaker 1: naming them.
- 26:40Speaker 4: In herself. And it's, it's acceptance of yourself. If that
- 26:46Speaker 4: makes sense.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Oh, my God. So I want you to know, I'm
- 26:54Speaker 2: about to take that segment right there, that nice little
- 26:58Speaker 2: segment that you did, and that is going to be
- 27:01Speaker 2: a highlight. I'm going to just let you go ahead
- 27:03Speaker 2: and know that now.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Okay. Well, thank you.
- 27:05Speaker 2: You said love who you are right now. Ladies, we
- 27:13Speaker 2: have a tendency not to do that. We have a
- 27:19Speaker 2: tendency to put on this armor. But do we truly
- 27:25Speaker 2: love the person who we are right now? You did
- 27:31Speaker 2: that one right there. You did that.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 27:38Speaker 2: So remember I told you.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Don't get scared.
- 27:45Speaker 4: I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared.
- 27:49Speaker 2: You're not scared?
- 27:50Speaker 4: All right.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Let's bring you to the hot seat. So you guys
- 27:55Speaker 2: know these are my fun questions. And because a lot
- 27:59Speaker 2: of people, when they ask for books, they're really asking
- 28:03Speaker 2: for what they read, what they, I'm sorry, what they
- 28:07Speaker 2: watch on TV and what they listen to. Well, nine
- 28:10Speaker 2: times ten would be the thing that they read. So,
- 28:15Speaker 2: I have a question for you.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Now, I am going to say the character's name wrong.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Please correct me.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Okay.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Nerfe?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Nefra.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Nefra.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I said I was going to say it wrong, y'all. Nefra.
- 28:36Speaker 4: I told you I was going to say it wrong.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I mean.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Listen, y'all, when I read books, and I don't know
- 28:41Speaker 2: the characters' names, they name us the first letter.
- 28:44Speaker 4: T-L-Nephri.
- 28:50Speaker 2: That's what we say, correct?
- 28:52Speaker 4: Oh, Nephra.
- 28:54Speaker 2: See, look, I done did it again. It's all right.
- 28:57Speaker 4: I know what you're talking about.
- 29:01Speaker 2: We here. Okay, so Lifetime... called and they say, you
- 29:09Speaker 2: know what? We want to make your book into a movie.
- 29:13Speaker 4: All right.
- 29:14Speaker 2: We are going to make all the women I have
- 29:16Speaker 2: fit into a movie.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:21Speaker 2: We need to cast the female male, the female main character.
- 29:29Speaker 2: We would love to get someone that is an actress.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Who would you choose? to play the part. and why.
- 29:44Speaker 1: From a skill level Angela Bassett because she's got the
- 29:48Speaker 1: depth to cover all of the women that Nefra has
- 29:52Speaker 1: been from an like.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I think it would be Angela Bassett. Honestly.
- 30:02Speaker 2: You think it would be Angela Bassett.
- 30:04Speaker 4: I think she can play it. You think she can
- 30:07Speaker 4: play it?
- 30:08Speaker 2: All right. Now, when your character is in a mother
- 30:12Speaker 2: mode and we're in that point of her life, we
- 30:17Speaker 2: would like her to be an 80s musical artist, R
- 30:24Speaker 2: & B. Who would she be?
- 30:28Speaker 4: An 80s?
- 30:31Speaker 2: 80s, we talking about.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Ooh. That's a tough one. 80s R & B artist
- 30:39Speaker 4: that she would be. Hmm.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Um.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Ooh. She said ooh.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Um....
- 30:57Speaker 2: I DON'T KNOW.
- 30:58Speaker 1: MAYBE.
- 30:58Speaker 4: MAYBE.
- 30:59Speaker 2: NO.
- 30:59Speaker 4: OKAY, THE LAPTOP. OKAY, THE LAPTOP. THAT'S A GO-OFF. I
- 31:27Speaker 4: don't know.
- 31:28Speaker 2: 80s female R & B artist.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Maybe Shanice.
- 31:32Speaker 2: No.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Okay.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Now, which one is Shanice? What is she? I love
- 31:40Speaker 2: your smile, right?
- 31:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Okay. Flex's wife. Okay, okay, okay.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Maybe, maybe, maybe.
- 31:51Speaker 1: I don't know. Like that one, I never would have
- 31:54Speaker 1: thought about. Like I think about it in a movie,
- 31:56Speaker 1: but I would an 80s artist.
- 31:58Speaker 4: No. If you ask me a current day, Jill Scott.
- 32:03Speaker 2: OK, OK. So why Jill Scott?
- 32:07Speaker 4: Because she gives me that vibe.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Like when I listen to her do interviews and talk,
- 32:12Speaker 1: she gives me that nurturing vibe.
- 32:14Speaker 4: With an edge.
- 32:17Speaker 2: You know what? You're right. I don't think I could
- 32:19Speaker 2: be Jill Scott's child. I would feel so wrong if
- 32:24Speaker 2: I did anything.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Yes, baby.
- 32:28Speaker 2: And you'd be like, dang, mama, I'm sorry.
- 32:30Speaker 4: She's got that little edge. Jill's got that little edge.
- 32:34Speaker 1: If you ever watch her interviews, she's nice and sweet,
- 32:38Speaker 1: but the undercut is like, yeah, but I got you.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Hi, baby. Why you do that?
- 32:49Speaker 2: I heard you could never do that again.
- 32:51Speaker 4: You know?
- 32:52Speaker 2: Still smiling and threatening you. And you're like, damn, I'm sorry.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Okay?
- 32:58Speaker 2: So, we have, if she was an actress, she would
- 33:01Speaker 2: have met Angela Bassett. And then, if she was a
- 33:06Speaker 2: musical artist, she would be, Lord Jesus, we were just
- 33:10Speaker 2: talking about her. Jill Scott. But, you know, sometimes you
- 33:15Speaker 2: need somebody to help you write your book. What author
- 33:19Speaker 2: would you ever want to co-write a book with and why?
- 33:23Speaker 4: This is going to sound crazy. It's a male artist.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I mean, a male author.
- 33:34Speaker 1: So James Patterson, because I think that his writing is,
- 33:43Speaker 1: it's so detailed and the details are so clear. that
- 33:49Speaker 1: you literally can visualize it. And after, like, I read
- 33:53Speaker 1: Along Came a Spider, and then I saw the movie.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I read Kiss the Girls, and then I saw the movies.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And it was so on point with, his descriptions were
- 34:03Speaker 1: so on point that when they made the movie, they
- 34:07Speaker 1: were able to capture it. And that is rare because most, like,
- 34:11Speaker 1: I read books and then I watch the movies most
- 34:13Speaker 1: of the time. And it's, they don't usually match. And
- 34:17Speaker 1: The details in those movies did.
- 34:22Speaker 2: All right, now. See, you survived my trick questions.
- 34:25Speaker 4: You survived the jokes.
- 34:30Speaker 2: But before we let you go, what would you like
- 34:33Speaker 2: to say to the readers who have read this book?
- 34:36Speaker 2: What would you like to say to the readers who
- 34:38Speaker 2: are going to read this book and the readers who
- 34:41Speaker 2: watch this podcast and go and read the book? What
- 34:44Speaker 2: would you like to say to your readers?
- 34:47Speaker 1: So to the readers who read it and those who
- 34:50Speaker 1: did the early review for me, thank you for the
- 34:53Speaker 1: confidence that you gave me. You confirmed that I got
- 34:57Speaker 1: my message across and I appreciate that. To those who
- 35:00Speaker 1: are about to read it, have a good time.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Enjoy it. Be prepared.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Have some tissue because there's a couple chapters that are
- 35:08Speaker 1: going to make you cry. But find what resonates with
- 35:13Speaker 1: you and It doesn't matter if you're male, female, young, old,
- 35:17Speaker 1: there's something in here for everybody. And for people who
- 35:24Speaker 1: joined us on the podcast, thank you for joining me.
- 35:26Speaker 4: I hope you go and buy the book.
- 35:28Speaker 1: And I hope that you come and join me on
- 35:32Speaker 1: my social media, email me, talk to me, come to
- 35:37Speaker 1: my author talks so that we can start changing the
- 35:40Speaker 1: way we think about grief. We kind of, didn't go
- 35:45Speaker 1: detailed into it, but we really, everything I do is
- 35:48Speaker 1: about changing the conversation and being.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Comfortable, not only in your own grief, but in other
- 35:56Speaker 4: people's grief. So that would be my message. That would
- 35:59Speaker 4: be what I would want.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Let me know what I can do to help you
- 36:04Speaker 1: change this conversation or have these conversations.
- 36:09Speaker 2: So I heard from a little bird, please. that you
- 36:13Speaker 2: have a special that's going on for anybody who's seen
