- 0:34But just to make it easy for you, I'm leaving a link in the
- 0:37show notes. Now let's dive into today's
- 0:41quote, which is often misattributed to Abraham
- 0:44Lincoln. And you've probably seen it
- 0:47under his name on social media 100 times.
- 0:51But the person most credibly connected to this quote is
- 0:55Augusta F Cantra, a psychotherapist and mindfulness
- 1:00teacher from Alabama who once wrote Discipline is choosing
- 1:07between what you want now and what you want most interesting.
- 1:15Quite often when people talk about discipline, it is about
- 1:19depriving yourself for using extreme willpower.
- 1:25But notice what Cantre is really saying here.
- 1:28She's not telling you to be harder on yourself.
- 1:31She's not talking about gritting your teeth, white knuckling your
- 1:35way through temptation, or punishing yourself for every
- 1:38slip up. She takes the punitive part of
- 1:43discipline away entirely. That's the reframe.
- 1:47Most of us think of discipline as deprivation.
- 1:51Saying no, giving things up, doing the hard thing.
- 1:56But Cantre flips it completely. Discipline isn't about denial.
- 2:01It's about choosing. Every single moment.
- 2:05You're making a choice between what you want right now and what
- 2:09you want most. The cookies or the goal, the
- 2:16Netflix binge or the business. The comfortable silence or the
- 2:23difficult conversation. When you keep what you want most
- 2:28at the forefront of your mind, it almost pulls you towards the
- 2:32right actions. Rather than feeling like a
- 2:34constant struggle, the goal itself becomes the motivation.
- 2:39You're not fighting yourself, you're just choosing.
- 2:43I used to think disciplined people were just wired
- 2:46differently, that they didn't feel the pull of distraction the
- 2:50way the rest of us do. What I've come to understand is
- 2:53that they feel it just as much. They've just gotten clear on
- 2:57what they want most, and that clarity makes the choice easier.
- 3:03Not easy, but easier. When I know exactly where I'm
- 3:08going, saying no to the detour doesn't feel like suffering, It
- 3:14feels more like steering. Last night I was on the couch
- 3:19playing a puzzle game on my phone and scrolling through my
- 3:23social feeds. I was feeling lazy and that is
- 3:27actually what I wanted to do at the time.
- 3:31But is it what I wanted most? No, what I wanted most was to
- 3:38produce this podcast episode, so that is what I chose.
- 3:45So here's the question, what do you want most?
- 3:49Not what you think you should want, Not what sounds
- 3:53impressive. What do you actually genuinely
- 3:58want most? Because once you know that,
- 4:01discipline stops being a battle and it becomes a choice.
- 4:06And choices are something you can make right now.
- 4:10That's it for today. I'm Andy McGivern, signing off
- 4:14for now but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:19Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
