Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: UK & Europe correspondent on Russian attack on Ukraine prompting quick action from Poland
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kevin grays our men in the UK Poland scrambling as
- 0:02Speaker 1: air force because of these massive Russian attacks on Ukraine.
- 0:05Speaker 1: That's just as winter's coming, right s given, we'll just.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Try and sort of force Ukraine into a miserable winter,
- 0:13Speaker 2: and of course it does get bitterly cold there if
- 0:16Speaker 2: they knock out all these power plants. Now, we've just
- 0:18Speaker 2: heard in the last few minutes that the death toll
- 0:21Speaker 2: of those overnight strikes missile and drone attacks from Russia
- 0:24Speaker 2: killed ten people, has just gone up from seven and
- 0:27Speaker 2: there are of course others in hospital. And indeed it
- 0:30Speaker 2: was the largest coordinated assault since early September. One hundred
- 0:34Speaker 2: and twenty missiles and ninety drones were launched. So what
- 0:39Speaker 2: is the response from Europe. Well, Poland, Ukraine's neighbor on
- 0:43Speaker 2: the western side, scrambled fighter jets to patron its own airspace.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And that is because some of these drones, some of
- 0:50Speaker 2: the missiles will go into the westernmost part of Ukraine,
- 0:54Speaker 2: in other words, very near to Poland and also Hungry,
- 0:59Speaker 2: which neighbors both Ukraine and Poland, also on a lord
- 1:03Speaker 2: with drone attacks just twenty kilometers from the border, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: the country's Defense minister. They're saying the situation is being
- 1:11Speaker 2: monitored continuously.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, two and a half he is under this war.
- 1:14Speaker 1: What's the vibe because obviously Trump's come in he says
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm going to end at You had Zelenski at the
- 1:18Speaker 1: weekend saying if anyone can end it, you know, Trump
- 1:22Speaker 1: has a bit of chance of ending it. Given as ritric.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Then perhaps Biden did this talk of a DMZ zone
- 1:28Speaker 1: between the countries of Ukraine agreeing not to join NATO
- 1:32Speaker 1: for twenty years. What's the vibe? Is it likely?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I think here in Europe the concern is Donald Trump
- 1:40Speaker 2: will simply turned the tap off, either completely or largely
- 1:43Speaker 2: on aid to Ukraine, financial aid and military aid. And
- 1:47Speaker 2: then the big question is will Europe step up to
- 1:51Speaker 2: the plate and fill the void. They said they will,
- 1:53Speaker 2: but well, plenty of you're skeptical about that. And indeed
- 1:57Speaker 2: the German Chancellor, the leader of Germany, on our Schultz,
- 2:01Speaker 2: he put a call in to Vladimir Putin. They spoke
- 2:04Speaker 2: for over an hour. It was the first time they
- 2:06Speaker 2: were spoken directly for nearly two years, and it infuriated
- 2:11Speaker 2: many in Europe who believed that the opportunity for diplomacy
- 2:14Speaker 2: has gone. There should be no appeasement and indeed they
- 2:18Speaker 2: should step up the support of Ukraine.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Interesting Givin thank you for that. Givin Gray are UK
- 2:23Speaker 1: europe correspondents.
