Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32OK, Why don't we get started with this one?
- 0:35Why don't we get started with introduce yourself, kind of give
- 0:38us a 30,000 foot level of like who you are in relationship to
- 0:41our great sport, and then tell us the name of the podcast that
- 0:43we're talking about today. All right, I'm Doug Bender.
- 0:49I'm the editor in chief of Die stat.com, which is the news
- 0:53operation for Runner Space. I've been in this role for about
- 1:0012 years. Before that, I spent a year
- 1:03actually with John Dye working for the old Die Stat when it was
- 1:06part of ESPN. And you know, my relationship
- 1:10with him goes back even farther than that.
- 1:12So we cover high school, college and pro track and field on a
- 1:18year round basis, pumping out stories, meet coverage and Die
- 1:24Stat discussions is I guess you know what you you're labeling a
- 1:30podcast. I'm not even sure we always
- 1:32think of it as a podcast. We just think of it as our
- 1:34interview space. Yeah, absolutely, Keenan.
- 1:38I'm Keenan Gray. I've been now with dice at full
- 1:42time for a little bit about over a year and a half or so.
- 1:47And my role varies, you know, from, you know, doing writing
- 1:50usually with with Doug, I'm going to cover meats, but I also
- 1:54run our social media pages, do a lot of the breaking news stuff
- 1:57that we post on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
- 2:00And then I also, since we are time of runner space, I'm also a
- 2:03play by play commentator for a lot of our broadcasts on
- 2:07runnerspace.com. So that's I've been involved
- 2:09that, but I mean, I've been covering track and field now
- 2:12probably for I think this is my 7th year being involved with
- 2:15doing something in capacity because when I when I first
- 2:18started, I had created my own website and that's kind of how I
- 2:21got involved with die stat. I was able to.
- 2:25I have a good relationship with Pat Tyson out at Gonzaga
- 2:27University and he was able to get me in contact with Doug when
- 2:31the podium open about five years ago.
- 2:33And that's how I was able to meet Doug and we kind of started
- 2:36our relationship there. Yeah, very cool.
- 2:38Yeah, I have a Doug, to your point, an open definition of
- 2:40what podcast means. We'll talk about that near the
- 2:43end of today's episode. But it's still, it's very
- 2:46important. It's a just a video version of
- 2:49what we do here. And so the value that you add is
- 2:52one of the reasons why we still wanted to absolutely make sure
- 2:54we have you guys here. And also my love for John Dye.
- 2:57You know, I, I met John right as he was expanding from Maryland
- 3:01to national with die stat. And you know, it's easy when we
- 3:06get into life in general to forget about people in the past.
- 3:10And you know, John Dye had an incredible and incredible impact
- 3:16on our sport as it specifically relates to media and coverage
- 3:20and things like that. And so, you know, anything that
- 3:24lives on with his legacy is very important to me personally.
- 3:27So well, let's hop into it. Talk to us about for the die
- 3:30stat discussions. What kind of style would we
- 3:33expect to listen to if we choose to listen to the podcast?
- 3:38It's a solo podcast. I got 2 here, so maybe it's you
- 3:402 Co hosting interviews. Talk to us about what kind of
- 3:43style we would expect. Well, we normally have one
- 3:49interviewer and one interview. We usually now could be, we've
- 3:54had many of them where we're interviewing an entire team, for
- 3:58instance, or members of a team. Maybe it's four or five boxes.
- 4:02That's uncommon. Usually it is one-on-one and,
- 4:08you know, not, not too different than what we're doing right now.
- 4:12Yeah, no, I mean, we usually just try to, we we reach out to
- 4:16like, I mean, pretty much anybody that's kind of like
- 4:19relevant during that time or like someone that'll be when I
- 4:21think that's big. I think we, the first one we
- 4:23started off with here in 2025 was Mike Holloway, which was a
- 4:26really big one to get. We have a guy that's based out
- 4:29of Florida and has a has a connection with him down there.
- 4:32And fortunately enough, Mike Holloway was gracious enough to
- 4:35to chat with Todd and they chat about, you know, like he has a
- 4:40new book coming out the Holloway effects basically his whole
- 4:44entire life and and other stuff like relating to the the Florida
- 4:48Gators. But I mean, yeah, as Doug said,
- 4:49like we, we try to reach out to people.
- 4:53I mean, we've had Olympic gold medalists, we've had world
- 4:56champions on, we've had Hall of Fame coaches, Hall of Fame
- 5:00athletes, I mean, the list goes on.
- 5:02So there's there's a wide variety of who we've had on
- 5:05Dystat discussions. Now knowing that there's
- 5:08extremes of a men and a Max, but what is the average?
- 5:11What would be the average length of an episode?
- 5:14Good question. I would say the average length
- 5:17is probably around 30 minutes. Now we've had, we've had
- 5:24episodes that have gone past an hour and some of them sometimes
- 5:31we've used the, the podcast as a promotional tool for upcoming
- 5:36meats on runner space. And we may get a high school kid
- 5:41on talk about the weekend's race.
- 5:44And that might only be 15 minutes or 10.
- 5:47Even if, if, if we're just trying to bang our way through
- 5:51like 3 or 4 of them in a day, for instance.
- 5:54But I would say if you took the, I mean, and we've got 11150
- 5:58episodes, OK, if you took the aggregate average of all those,
- 6:04I'm guessing it's going to be around 30 minutes.
- 6:06Yeah, that's cool. I love that.
- 6:07Now, I don't want to assume anything, but you know, kind of
- 6:11behind the curtain, one of the titles names of our podcast that
- 6:15we discussed was discussions because we're an interview
- 6:18podcast where we, you know, we have talks and you are you, you
- 6:22went with it. You are diced at discussions.
- 6:24What was the kind of impetus around the name?
- 6:26I again, I don't want to assume, but I can assume that it was
- 6:29because we're going to have discussions that would track
- 6:31people around the world well. What happened was we began this
- 6:35whole thing during the pandemic when there was nothing, no meats
- 6:38for us to cover. And these types of Zoom
- 6:42interviews became our, our best way to get new content.
- 6:48And so for the, for the, for the, the very start, we called
- 6:52them quarantine conversations, you know, and then when the
- 6:57quarantine period sort of had dissipated and gone away, it
- 7:00didn't seem appropriate anymore. So I think it's just the
- 7:03alliteration of of the 2DS die stat discussions that just kind
- 7:08of flowed right there. And it it wasn't a huge, there
- 7:13wasn't a meeting about it was pretty, pretty quick to just
- 7:16come up with a new name quickly because we probably had people
- 7:19scheduled and just needed to keep rolling on with it.
- 7:22Now my next question is when did you start?
- 7:25You talked about during during the COVID and you kind of
- 7:29touched on this, but maybe take let's take a step deeper into
- 7:32this. What was the motivation to start
- 7:34now? I heard, you know, you needed
- 7:36content. That's one thing that's great.
- 7:37There's other options you could have done and you do do for for
- 7:41for content. Was there any other motivations
- 7:44of why to start this type of, you know, video interview?
- 7:47There's a lot of other options you could have taken there.
- 7:49Type of series. Yeah, again, we were sitting
- 7:54around with really nothing to do.
- 7:57All of the meats on the schedule have been wiped off.
- 8:00And we were thinking, I mean, other than I was doing a lot of
- 8:04updates about closures and cancellations and writing
- 8:08content like that. We needed to interact with the
- 8:10athletes. And at that, at that time, we
- 8:13were sort of discovering how Zoom could be the a tool to use
- 8:19that we'd never even considered before.
- 8:22And when we saw, you know, how it was being employed in, in
- 8:25schools and, and for people just to have meetings, we decided to
- 8:30give it a try. And it probably took probably
- 8:34took a few weeks, even after the after the pandemic shutdown had
- 8:37started, before we even got ourselves positioned to try one.
- 8:41And once we did, we just kept rolling with that because again,
- 8:48it sort of gave us, you know, put something on our on our
- 8:53plate on keep, just keep our work schedule going.
- 8:56And, and so many others in the company had really had nothing
- 8:58to do other than organize, reorganize the equipment maybe
- 9:01or get ready for when the meet started again.
- 9:05And, and there wasn't a lot for some of those production people
- 9:10to do. And it just gave us an opening
- 9:14to, you know, started started kind of a something, something
- 9:19brand new, which was these interviews.
- 9:22Keenan, you've seen it throughout the years here.
- 9:25Has it kept its original kind of format and idea?
- 9:28You know, things evolve, We evolve as people as we talked
- 9:31about from the beginning of COVID to today in 2025, has it
- 9:35kind of kept it or is that any iterations that have kind of
- 9:38coming through? It's evolved.
- 9:40It's evolved big time. I mean, we this, this last year,
- 9:43we decided not use the Zoom platform anymore.
- 9:47We're going to use this thing called Riverside.
- 9:49And Riverside has been such a awesome tool for us to use not
- 9:53only from an editing standpoint, but also like you could throw
- 9:57these graphics in there that fixes your audio levels.
- 10:00It, it evens everything out for you.
- 10:02I mean, when I first initially introduced this to Doug, I can
- 10:06see deer in the headlights in his face because he was like,
- 10:08oh, this is something brand new. This is, I don't know if I like
- 10:10this or not, but we both use it now.
- 10:13It is an awesome tool. It is so easy and the like the
- 10:18athletes, they, they, they find it easy to get on to as well.
- 10:21Coaches as well, which that's the most important thing is
- 10:24like, how can you get these athletes and coaches to access
- 10:28something so that we can have these conversations with them?
- 10:30And you know that ever since we started using Riverside in the
- 10:33fall of I think 2023, it's blossomed and our like, we have
- 10:37a backdrop now. Everything looks professional.
- 10:41The only thing we're missing is like maybe some mics better than
- 10:43that. Like it's it's looks a quality
- 10:46in my opinion at least. Absolutely.
- 10:48That's so cool. I love that.
- 10:49You know, for us, for businesses, you know, we
- 10:52manufacture all levels of track and field equipment and we have
- 10:55a lot of different customers. You know, we'll have moms and
- 10:58dads that will buy a discus for Christmas.
- 11:01We'll have architects, general contractors, even athletic
- 11:04directors. But our primary like who our
- 11:07ideal customer profile, the person that we think about when
- 11:11we create new products, market trade shows, etcetera is the
- 11:14high school and college track coach.
- 11:16That is who we are focused on and everybody else kind of gets
- 11:20to go along for the ride. Good for you that you get to buy
- 11:22a discus for Christmas, but I'm worried about Coach Holloway at
- 11:25Florida. That's who I'm focused on.
- 11:27Same can be said for our podcast that a lot of different people,
- 11:30athletes, coaches, administrators, fans,
- 11:33international, domestic may listen to our podcast.
- 11:36But when you're thinking about the next guest and the type of
- 11:39questions to ask, you're thinking about a specific ideal
- 11:42listener profile. Who might that be for the die
- 11:45stat discussions? I think I would consider that
- 11:50just to be track fans, the people that are going to sit in
- 11:56the seats at Hayward Field. You know, it's that's pretty
- 12:01general question, but I think that that's what we're aiming to
- 12:06do. We're we're hoping that there's
- 12:07some news value in some of these interviews.
- 12:11I know Keenan has one scheduled next week with a coach, with
- 12:14coach at UCLA. And what what will you know,
- 12:18we'll be able to ask her hopefully about the situation
- 12:22Los Angeles this week and how that's affected her and her
- 12:24team. We're hoping that when when we
- 12:27do these, if there's some news value and that the track fans,
- 12:30the track community is attracted to that.
- 12:33Keenan, anything you would add on the ideal listener profile?
- 12:37I mean, in this day and age of podcasts, which I feel like it
- 12:41seems like anybody could do a podcast now.
- 12:43You want it some entertainment value as well, like you want to
- 12:46be able to get your audience attention.
- 12:49And I, you know, I, I'm a big, big podcast.
- 12:52So when it comes to like Conan O'Brien, like I love listening
- 12:55to his podcast. He makes me laugh all the time.
- 12:56Like you have to have some entertainment value just to be
- 13:00able to get your audience to, to care about the podcast.
- 13:03But as Doug said, like newsworthy stuff, like if I'm
- 13:06going to talk be talking about Joanna Hayes next, next week, I
- 13:08better be asking about what's going on down in LA and how
- 13:12that's going to affect them. Like are they going to be able
- 13:14to go to their meet next week up in Spokane?
- 13:16Like are they going to be able to use their track at all this
- 13:19outdoor season? Like how, how bad is this fire
- 13:21really around Westwood? So you yes, you wanted like some
- 13:26things on a serious note, but also you want to keep it light
- 13:29and fun. And I think I think that's what
- 13:33when you when you mix and match those together, that makes a
- 13:36really good podcast. And you can you can go different
- 13:38ways about that. I love that.
- 13:41So now this next question is kind of A2 parter and I got two
- 13:43people, so maybe it's a four parter.
- 13:45I did a little bit of math back in the day.
- 13:47So I want to know you've done 1000 plus episodes.
- 13:51That is amazing. Which one each individually
- 13:54here, which one has been your favorite?
- 13:56So whether it was, you know, you get to define on how it became
- 14:00your favorite. Just you've already like started
- 14:01thinking like automatic like, oh, this was a lot of fun.
- 14:03Which ones was your favorite? And then it's probably not the
- 14:06same episode for this Next question is which ones Which one
- 14:09has been the most popular? So the most downloads, so other
- 14:12people have found value and interest in this, you know,
- 14:15maybe your top 1-2 or three episodes.
- 14:17So what's your, what's been your favorite and what's been the
- 14:20most popular? Who wants to start?
- 14:24I can start. I'm not sure I know which one is
- 14:28the most popular based on views. I don't often see that
- 14:35information. Honestly, I'm just moving on to
- 14:37the next more, but I can I can think of a couple that are the
- 14:41most memorable for me, that most enjoyable.
- 14:43And one of them was, I think it was must have been 2021 Hobbes.
- 14:49Kessler had just become a big deal, had run sub four in the an
- 14:56indoor mile, I believe, and I was able to get him on an
- 15:01episode with Jim Ryan, with Alan Webb and with Drew Hunter.
- 15:05So I had the all four of them together talking about the
- 15:08significance of being a high school sub 4 Miller.
- 15:12And I know it was a it was, I think it was a pretty cool
- 15:15moment for Hobbs to meet some of those guys and, and it was a
- 15:19thrill to talk to all of them together.
- 15:22That's pretty cool. That's a heck of a four by mile
- 15:24right there too as well. Yeah.
- 15:25Yeah, that would be that would be a dream team for sure.
- 15:29Keenan, what about you? I don't know.
- 15:31Are you Privy to this? Someone's got to have the stats,
- 15:32and that's okay if you don't. Somebody else does out there.
- 15:35The thing is like with our podcast, we don't have it on a
- 15:38platform or anything. We it's just on our website at
- 15:40dystat.com. So I mean, again, we would have
- 15:42to go probably through the whatever, something back to go
- 15:46checked behind the scenes to see what exactly it is.
- 15:51But probably, you know, my, I have two that I really enjoyed
- 15:55and actually two of them that just happened this last summer
- 15:57because I haven't really done a ton of these when I, when I
- 15:59initially got hired on, we had somebody else that did a lot of
- 16:02them and give his flowers to, he did a lot of of die stat
- 16:07discussions when he was with our with our team.
- 16:09But my two favorites, probably 1 was with Shelby McEwen after he
- 16:14got second at the Olympics and just talking about that jump off
- 16:19and just the amount of grief that he got from people from not
- 16:22taking the gold medal. But also we're hearing from his
- 16:26side, it's like, I'm a competitor.
- 16:29Like I'm going to try to go after this.
- 16:31I'm not just going to have someone give it to me because
- 16:33that's what he could have easily just done that.
- 16:35And I respect that wholeheartedly.
- 16:37But you know, there are people out there that are selfish and
- 16:39want him to just take that gold medal.
- 16:41But this is athletics. This is competition.
- 16:43You it's, there's no ties. This is not soccer that there's
- 16:46somebody that's first place and there's somebody that is second
- 16:49place. That's how it should be.
- 16:50That's how America is second. My other one was with Coach
- 16:55Quincy Watts from University of Southern California and was able
- 16:59to talk with him about not only how USC has done all over these
- 17:05years and all that stuff, but like, you know, talking with him
- 17:08about Kendall Ellis and kind of the situation that she was in
- 17:11with the with the 4x4 at the Olympics where she basically was
- 17:15told you're going to be running the four by four of the morning
- 17:18of. And then 8 minutes before the
- 17:19start of the actual final, you're not going to be running
- 17:22it any. And you can already sense that's
- 17:26from coach, Coach Watts. There was a lot of frustration,
- 17:28a lot of anger with how USATF was able to do something like
- 17:32that to an athlete. So those were really, really two
- 17:36thought provoking conversations that I had when if anybody gets
- 17:39a chance, go watch them both. I mean, they're both great
- 17:41people. They're both great speakers.
- 17:43But yeah, those are the two ones I really enjoyed doing.
- 17:46I love that. That's really cool.
- 17:48Now most of our listeners, they kind of come in and out of our
- 17:52shows, right. A few probably have actually
- 17:54watched all 1100 and something of of the episodes, but most of
- 17:58them depending on the the time of the season, the the person
- 18:03that you're interviewing that kind of come in and out.
- 18:05But you guys have been behind the mic on every single one of
- 18:09them in some form or fashion, what have you.
- 18:11And you know, knowing that you guys come from a media
- 18:13background here, what have you guys learned as being an
- 18:17interviewer type podcast? It not necessarily, you know,
- 18:20well, I learned about the Kendall Ellis situation, but you
- 18:22know, hardware, software, interviewing skills.
- 18:26You never ask an athlete this question.
- 18:28No one wants to schedule a podcast after.
- 18:30I don't know. I don't want, I don't want to
- 18:31bias here, but what have you learned over these years?
- 18:34A great question I had always begun with the idea that I
- 18:39didn't really want to have I actually didn't really want to
- 18:42have questions. I just wanted to flow into it
- 18:45and have a conversation and just let the let the questions come
- 18:49naturally and I think that that was probably and then I probably
- 18:53had a few where I thought afterwards oh boy, I really just
- 18:56dropped the ball. I didn't ask one of the things
- 18:59that was definitely on my mind before the thing started right.
- 19:02So I think there's a little bit of AI like I like going in
- 19:07sometimes a little bit not married to the questions and
- 19:11just just have a conversation. But but again, you do have to
- 19:17cover some ground that maybe that was the basis for asking
- 19:21them to join you anyway, right? So there's a little bit of a
- 19:25back, a little bit of a, a balancing act, I think between
- 19:29kind of like, you know, going ad Lib and just doing that for a
- 19:33while and making sure that you cover all the points that you
- 19:36wanted to. So, so I'm not kind of hearing
- 19:38of like some self-awareness of like, you know, some people can
- 19:41no notes and go and make it great.
- 19:43And some people have to have full notes and go and make it
- 19:45great. You're you're learning your kind
- 19:47of self-awareness of like, OK, I don't need the extremes.
- 19:50I need some guidance, but I like to have discussions.
- 19:52That's a great thing to learn that helps in regular old life.
- 19:55And we're working in business and at home and things like
- 19:57that. That's really cool, Doug.
- 19:58I'm glad you're able to see that in yourself.
- 20:00I, and I will say one thing that I, that it's meant it's super
- 20:03mandatory when you're talking to athletes is I got to have a list
- 20:06of their PRS, their big moments. Like I need to be able to recall
- 20:11that quickly and, and give, you know, again, it's a way to
- 20:16connect with the athletes. And when you know what their
- 20:18best times are, you know what their achievements are, you need
- 20:22to be able to explain that, even if it's just in the introduction
- 20:25or, or whether it's later in the interview.
- 20:28You need that information like, you know, at your fingertips.
- 20:32There's no guessing that kind of thing.
- 20:34So that's something I definitely have.
- 20:37You know, I probably learned that in the first six months or
- 20:40so. Hard to ask an athlete their PR
- 20:43when it's like, you invited me on your show.
- 20:44Shouldn't you know my PR like that?
- 20:46That probably got me on the show.
- 20:47Keenan, what about you? You've been doing this for now,
- 20:49for a little while. What have you learned as a
- 20:51podcast host here? It's because I'm young and I
- 20:54remember things a little bit better.
- 20:56This is not a shade to get Doug by any means, but no, I mean I
- 21:01you know, I'm kind of the opposite.
- 21:02Like I, I kind of just like, as Doug said, just go and have a
- 21:06conversation with him. Like I don't really necessarily
- 21:08have questions in front of me. I probably should at times with
- 21:11some particular things. But the nice thing is like it
- 21:14when you're recording on a computer, like you can have
- 21:16multiple screens on your computer and I like I'll have
- 21:19the athletes profile on my left. So in some ways like, yeah, like
- 21:23I do have some like idea, like I can general knowledge and look
- 21:26at to the side of my screen. But at the same time, like I
- 21:31kind of like ask the questions in my head before I even talked
- 21:35to the athletes. Just like, what am I?
- 21:37This is how I'm going to do it. Like I'll break it down and then
- 21:41I'll just, we just go about that interview and it's, I mean,
- 21:44it's, it sounds simple and it works for me and it's been
- 21:48proven to be effective. But yeah, I mean, it's, yeah,
- 21:52there's not much really to it for me, I guess.
- 21:55Now you ripped off what Doug said there.
- 21:57What about anything uniquely that you've learned throughout
- 21:59this process of becoming an interviewer for a podcast show?
- 22:03I've learned that if you don't come prepared, it's not going to
- 22:06be really good. I mean, I think Doug hit it, hit
- 22:09the nail on the coffin with with that.
- 22:12If you're not, if you don't know your, your, your audience, you
- 22:15don't know your, your person you're talking to, it's not
- 22:18going to be a good show. You have to know like at least
- 22:20something about who you're interviewing.
- 22:22And if you don't, then I mean, it's, it's like going into a, a,
- 22:26a test. Like if you, if you didn't study
- 22:27for it or prepare for it, you're going to do a horrible.
- 22:30Now, maybe some people are that smart and are going to do good.
- 22:33And some people are that smart and know the person maybe a
- 22:36little bit already and know how to talk to people.
- 22:38But if you don't study or do any sort of research, it's not going
- 22:42to be a successful show. Yeah.
- 22:44And I think the audience can feel that too, you know,
- 22:47especially on a audio only. It's like, you know, we lose
- 22:49body language and things like that.
- 22:51And it's well. And, and the guest could feel
- 22:53that too. I mean, the guest is like, why
- 22:55am I here if you don't even know anything about me?
- 22:59Like what's the point? Like I could be taking a nap
- 23:03right now. I could be doing something that
- 23:04productive through my life, but I'm here talking to this idiot
- 23:09that doesn't know what I'm who he is or who I who I am.
- 23:13So what's the point? Why am I here?
- 23:14That's. Right.
- 23:15I love it. I love it.
- 23:16All right, last two questions here.
- 23:17So now this, the second to last question is where the uniqueness
- 23:20maybe comes from here? So the next question is, so
- 23:22where can we find you? And typically it's your Apple,
- 23:24Spotify, YouTube, we're only on Dystat, correct?
- 23:28Or on Dystat or runner space, where would we actually go to
- 23:31find the show? Actually be on both, but they're
- 23:37all, they're all be on dystat.com and then you know,
- 23:41the clips of them will be on our social media channels as well.
- 23:45But yeah, we're not on any, we're not out on any other
- 23:48platforms. I know Runnerspace does have a
- 23:51YouTube channel. I don't know that our die stat
- 23:52discussions have have have made it over there yet, but.
- 24:00Keenan, you said they are. Yeah, yeah, they do.
- 24:03I mean, every time I've uploaded 1 and we send one to one of our
- 24:06social media guys, he'll upload them on YouTube.
- 24:08So yeah, a lot of our die stat discussions, you can find those
- 24:11on YouTube. Perfect.
- 24:12So we got die stat, we got runnerspace, and we have
- 24:15YouTube. Yeah, it's a run and it's a
- 24:17runner space YouTube page. No no dicat YouTube page, just a
- 24:20runner space one. Perfect.
- 24:21Yeah, You know, I thought it was important here.
- 24:23You know, I I'm a big podcast fan.
- 24:26I, you know, just up until recently used to teach a college
- 24:29class on how to create podcast and you know, I really have a
- 24:32much wider spance than just, you know, oh, on Apple podcast or
- 24:35Spotify etcetera, that, you know, videos are a form of that.
- 24:38It's content, it's content creation.
- 24:40So even though you may not have an audio only version of the
- 24:44Dyscat discussions, it was important for me to have you
- 24:47guys part of this this project. So I appreciate that you guys
- 24:50are are with that. You're on YouTube, you're on
- 24:52Dystat and you're on Runnerspace as well.
- 24:55Now, the last question and Keenan, you kind of already you
- 24:57gave us one. I'm going to ask you to maybe
- 24:59give us another one. But you know, we know that the
- 25:01average podcast listener listens to between 7:00 and 10:00
- 25:04different shows. I myself, I've got a running
- 25:07list of 10 and you know, they kind of come in and come off.
- 25:09I want to know what is your favorite podcast to listen to
- 25:12that isn't your own? And maybe, let's maybe say it's
- 25:15not even track related. So can you, you give us a little
- 25:18bit about the Conan show, which he's pretty funny.
- 25:21That's a pretty good one. What's your other maybe favorite
- 25:23one that you just, you just don't miss, right?
- 25:25Now I'm the anomaly. I don't listen to podcasts.
- 25:28I don't, I, I, I, I don't. I don't have a 7 or 10.
- 25:32Like Conan Conan's Sees a friend or whatever it's called is like
- 25:36the only podcast that I really listen to.
- 25:39I mean, it's I don't know what it is.
- 25:41I just listen to music in the car all the time.
- 25:43There's just, I don't know. I mean, maybe I guess if you, I
- 25:46listen to talk radio sometimes if you count that as a podcast,
- 25:49but really it's just like ESPN Radio and all that stuff.
- 25:52But I don't have really another podcast I'd listen to.
- 25:56So I'm the anomaly here. I.
- 25:58I told you I took a little bit of math.
- 25:59So if you listen to one and the average is 10, that means
- 26:02someone's listening to 20. And that's that's OK.
- 26:04That means we need a A1. So that's perfect.
- 26:06So Conan O'Brien, what? What is it?
- 26:07It's like Conan O'Brien needs a friend or something like that.
- 26:09Yeah, Conan O'Brien needs a friend, basically.
- 26:12I mean, I don't listen to like every week, but like I'll pick
- 26:14out random episodes. Like my favorite one was with
- 26:16Larry David and just Larry David was on talking about how certain
- 26:21parties need a party sheriff. And if the party sheriff like
- 26:24sees a conversation going on too long, like he needs to go
- 26:27intervene and say, alright man, we're done with this.
- 26:29Like he just takes him out of the party and just takes some
- 26:31point. And I kid like for 10 minutes
- 26:33straight. I could not stop laughing just
- 26:35from that entire moment just talking about the this this
- 26:39party sheriff. I'm like, where does he come up
- 26:41with it? Like Larry David is Larry David
- 26:43if he's in Curb You Enthusiasm or if he's on like SNL or he's
- 26:47just, I think he's just the same person in, in general throughout
- 26:51his entire life. Absolutely.
- 26:52Doug, what about you? What's you got?
- 26:54Any favorite podcasts that you listen to?
- 26:55Yeah, I would say my favorite podcast is The Midnight Miracle
- 26:59with Dave Chappelle. I just love Dave Chappelle to
- 27:02begin with. But his podcast, his podcast is
- 27:05with a couple of other guys and you know, there's, there's
- 27:08always a combination of of music and then sort of really deep
- 27:12conversations just about life that I find interesting.
- 27:17But I'm, I'm a little bit like Keenan, like I don't listen to a
- 27:19lot of podcasts either. Now my excuses I have, I have
- 27:23twin babies that are 18 months old here in the house and I
- 27:28spent a lot of my time playing with them when I'm not working.
- 27:32So and we're watching Coca Melon and Miss Rachel and things like
- 27:37that on, on, on, on the television.
- 27:40So I I don't have a lot of podcast time, but like I said, I
- 27:44do, I do enjoy The Midnight Miracle with Dave Chappelle.
- 27:47That's a pretty valid excuse, Doug.
- 27:49We'll let it go. That with two twins in the
- 27:52house, I don't know how you even listen to one podcast, my
- 27:55friend. So that's, that's very valid.
- 27:57OK, well. Full full disclaimer, I don't
- 27:59have twins so that's not my excuse.
- 28:02I'm just an old soul and you are.
- 28:04I guess I just haven't like, I guess I'm I'm 25 years old yet.
- 28:09I don't act like it sometimes I'm older than I.
- 28:13It's funny, as we've been talking to Keenan, literally in
- 28:14my head, I was like, Keenan's kind of an old soul in my head.
- 28:17So very good. You're exactly right.
- 28:19OK, Keenan, you introduced us to the party sheriff.
- 28:22Well, I'm going to be the podcast sheriff.
- 28:24So we, dear listener, we're done, right?
- 28:26You can see in your podcast app right now, this episode's pretty
- 28:28much over. So here is my challenge to you.
- 28:31Hit pause. Normally I've been saying, you
- 28:33know, use the same app that you're listening to right now to
- 28:35search for this podcast, but we don't do that.
- 28:37So as long as you're not in a car, go to your computer, you
- 28:39have your cell phone when you're in the house, go to what?
- 28:41What do we got? We have dystat.com.
- 28:44Is that correct? I hear, I see head shaking.
- 28:46We have runnerspace.com and then we'll be able to and you'll be
- 28:49able to see that. I'm sure there's a button or a
- 28:51search feature for die sat discussions or go on to
- 28:54runnerspaces YouTube channel and search in there and they'll have
- 28:58the Die Scott die stat discussions there a very popular
- 29:01to listen to YouTube, like at a desk, you know, want to open
- 29:03that open tab? So I love that you're putting
- 29:06them on YouTube. So here's my challenge.
- 29:08Go to either one of those three websites and look up the die
- 29:11stat discussions and go back. Here's how I kind of like to
- 29:14start when I'm looking at a new podcast or new show, if I'm
- 29:17going to like it or not, it's going to be hard to say, you
- 29:19know, go back to episode 1, right, and go all the way
- 29:21through 1000. I'm not going to put that on
- 29:23you, although I know someone's going to do that.
- 29:25But you heard their favorite episodes.
- 29:26That's kind of my, I like going to those episodes and listening
- 29:30like if they if it's their favorites, there's something
- 29:32special about that episode. So go back and listen to that 4
- 29:35by mile. That's what I'm going to call
- 29:36it. That seems like a really good
- 29:37one, Shelby. What an amazing athlete.
- 29:39Obviously, I can't, I'm going to go back and make sure I listen
- 29:42to that one because I want to hear about that competitive
- 29:44side. And then Q, what a great guy
- 29:46there at USC. Love him to death.
- 29:48Those seem like really great places to start.
- 29:50And then make sure you're hit. I assume we can't subscribe on
- 29:54the Dystat and Runner Space pages, but on YouTube we can hit
- 29:56subscribe and that way you're notified every time they put a
- 30:00new episode there. But go check them out.
- 30:01I hope it blesses you and your track fandom geekdom here as
- 30:05you're looking at different podcasts, different shows to
- 30:07watch. I hope it blesses you and guys,
- 30:09Doug and Keenan, thank you so much.
- 30:10Your blessing track and field and coaches.
- 30:12You know, it's my jam here as coaches typically enriching them
- 30:16with content of athletes and other coaches and situations
- 30:19like Shelby's and stuff that I think adds value to our world.
- 30:23And so I'm just so grateful for what you do and what you put out
- 30:26into the track and field world. So thank you so much for what
- 30:28you do and thank you for being here.
- 30:29Today. Thank you, Mike.
- 30:32Appreciate it.
