- 0:00Aloha. Thursday morning. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today — and it's a rough-water kind of day if you're on the south shore.
- 1:39Trade winds are steady and breezy across all the islands through at least next week. Windward slopes will catch showers mostly at night and early morning, so if you're hiking or heading out on that side, aim for midday. Leeward coasts and resort beaches stay mostly dry. Small Craft Advisory is up for Maui and Big Island waters through the weekend, so conditions out there are rough.
- 1:58South shore surf is head-high to overhead today — 4.5 feet on Oʻahu, 5.6 feet on Kauaʻi. Watch for shore break and rip currents if you're swimming. Kāʻanapali on Maui sits at 3.2 feet, and Hapuna on the Big Island is at 1.4 feet — much calmer if you want safer water for snorkeling.
- 2:12Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several closures in place — Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail due to hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is under replacement. There's a Kīlauea eruption alert in effect, and volcanic ash cautions are posted. Check the park website for current access before you head out.
- 2:28If you're planning a Big Island trip around the harvest season, we've got a new piece on the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival — it's coming up in early November. The guide walks through what to expect, when to book, and how to time your stay to catch the cultural events and farm tours that happen around the festival.
- 2:44Friday looks similar — steady trades, windward showers at night, leeward staying dry. The real shift comes Monday when humidity climbs and rain chances pick up, especially midweek.
- 2:53If you're heading to the south shore today, our surf guide has the breakdown. Catch you tomorrow.
