- 0:07The San Francisco Giants faced the New York Mets at Chase Stadium in New York for a Sunday
- 0:11afternoon game on August 29, 1965. The Giants entered the game red hot, fighting the Dodgers
- 0:17and Reds for first place in the National League with a 70-56 record. The Mets, managed by
- 0:22Casey Stengel, were dismal as usual, in the basement of the National League with twice
- 0:26as many losses as wins. This recording is from the New York WHN Radio broadcast featuring
- 0:31announcers Ralph Keiner, Lindsay Nelson, and Bob Murphy.
- 1:00Right here is Chase Stadium in Flushing, New York. It's the New York Mets playing the San
- 1:04Francisco Giants.
- 1:07Rheingold beer brings you National League Baseball with the New York Mets. Rheingold,
- 1:11New York city's largest selling beer. And what a remarkable thing that is. In New York,
- 1:18a city of so many different people with different tastes, one beer has become the favorite,
- 1:24Rheingold Extra Dry. We don't know why so many people like our beer. But we must be
- 1:29be doing something right. This game is also brought to you by Viceroy. Not too strong,
- 1:35not too light. Viceroy has got the filter for the taste that's right. And by the Shell
- 1:41Oil Company, makers of Super Shell, the gasoline for good mileage. Stop at the clean white
- 1:47pump for Super Shell.
- 1:49Hello everyone, this is Ralph Kern here along with Lindsay Nelson and Bob Murphy from Shade
- 1:54Stadium. Actually, Lindsay Nelson is not right here with us in Shade Stadium. He is quoting
- 1:59high in the air just above us in a Goodyear blimp. He'll be doing Tom and Jerry. Lots of
- 2:04ball games are right up there on television. This is the final game of the year between
- 2:08the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets. The Mets have won the last game of this
- 2:13series, winning last night 3-0 behind the combined pitching of Galen Sisko and Al Jackson.
- 2:18They lost the first game as the Giants outslugged them by a score of 9-2. So this game is another
- 2:23game of this series. Mets just offer one of the finest weeks in their history. In fact,
- 2:28they're playing as weak as they won six of the eight games played throughout the week
- 2:32against the Cardinals, winning two on Sunday from the Cardinals, three out of four from
- 2:36the Dodgers, and one out of two from the Giants. This ball game all set to go on a beautiful
- 2:41day for baseball. Real bright sky and pleasant weather and a large crowd on hand for the
- 2:47final game of this series.
- 2:49Johnny Lineups will see Ron Hunt for the New York Mets at second base. Batting in the
- 2:54second position playing center field, Johnny Lewis batting third at first base at Crane
- 2:59Bowl. In the cleanup spot, I'm playing third base Charlie Smith. Joe Cryptiver playing
- 3:03right field batting fifth. Johnny Stevenson, the catcher, batting sixth. Ron Sepota in
- 3:08left field batting seventh. And Roy McMunn at shortstop batting eighth. The pitcher will
- 3:12be Jack Fisher and he'll be batting ninth. Now it's Willie Mays coming out with the lineup
- 3:17cards to home plate and present the San Francisco Giants lineup. It'll read like this,
- 3:21Mattie Lue in right field batting first. Len Gamberson, the catcher, make it the left fielder
- 3:26batting in the second position. Willie Mays batting in the third position in center field.
- 3:30Willie McKelvey at first base in the cleanup position. Jim Ray Hart at third base batting
- 3:35fifth. Tom Haller, the catcher, batting sixth. Alan Neer at second base batting seventh.
- 3:39And the shortstop, Tino Fuentes, batting eighth. On the mound for the Giants, Bob Bowlin. Two
- 3:45former teammates out at home plate with the umpires, Wes Westrom, the pro-temp manager
- 3:49of the New York Mets, talking it over, going over the grounds rules, and Willie Mays, the
- 3:54captain of the San Francisco Giants. The umpires will be Stan Landis behind home plate. Mel
- 3:59Steiner, the umpire at first base. Hal Pollock, the umpire at second. He's the crew chief
- 4:03of this group and umpiring at third base. Augie Donatelli. Linda's going in from center
- 4:08field at Shade Stadium on a very pleasant day. I mentioned here at this ballpark, 3-41
- 4:14down the left and right field lines and center field 4-10 up the alleys in left and right
- 4:18center at 371 feet. Now Willie Mays walking away as he goes back to the dugout and the
- 4:25New York Mets will be taking the field in just a moment. The Giants are in third place
- 4:30in the National League race, two and a half games back of the Dodgers. The Dodgers won
- 4:34last night to hold their lead of one and a half games over Cincinnati. In fourth place
- 4:39Milwaukee they trailed two and a half back, a percentage point behind the Giants. Pittsburgh
- 4:43in fifth place, they are six games back and then Philadelphia. In the overall important
- 4:49loss column, the San Francisco Giants have lost 56 ball games and the Dodgers have lost
- 4:5656 along with Cincinnati. Milwaukee has lost 57, Pittsburgh 62 and Philadelphia 62. New
- 5:03York Mets have a record of 43 and 87 going for them. They're trying to come up with a
- 5:08year that will top last year's record, all-time high wins of 53 ball games. The Mets need
- 5:1310 more to tie that overall position. Now the New York Mets have taken the field. It
- 5:20will be Eddie Greenbull at first base, Ron Hunt at second base. Shortstop is Roy McCellan,
- 5:26the third baseman, Johnny Smith. Out in the outfield going from left to right, Ron Cevolde
- 5:31in left field, in center field Johnny Lewis in right field, Joe Fritzberg. The catcher
- 5:36will be Johnny Stevenson. And waiting now for the pitcher, Jack Fisher, to come out on
- 5:41the field and take his position on the 15 rubber. Action in the National League scheduled
- 5:48around on a full Sunday afternoon and also the American League will bring you right up
- 5:52to date on the action that has taken place in just a moment. But right now our National
- 5:56anthem.

- 7:24The crowd here today looks like it will be the all-time high for a single Sunday game.
- 7:31The top crowd in the past was June 3rd, 1962 against the Giants for a single Sunday game.
- 7:40That was a 34,102 crowd. That, of course, was in the Polar Grounds.
- 7:46The largest crowd here at Shea Stadium was a 30,185 crowd against the Pirates on April 19th, 1964.
- 7:54That was the first Sunday that the Mets played in Shea Stadium.
- 7:58And the crowd here today looks like it will be somewhere around 40,000 people.
- 8:04Of the 16th and 20th, the Mets have drawn 253,112 people. Giants have so far played for 290,045.
- 8:17The Mets are on their way to more records as the ball game gets underway.
- 8:22Mattie Allou, the first batter for San Francisco. Mattie playing right field, hitting 236.
- 8:27And the first pitch is for Honigsthal out of place, strike one.
- 8:35Zach Fisher with a record of 8-16 on the mound for the Mets.
- 8:40A lifetime record in the Major League, 54 wins and 82 losses.
- 8:44He is all in three this season against his former teammate, San Francisco Giants.
- 8:48A lifetime he has won one and lost six against them.
- 8:53One strike out on Mattie Allou, left hand batter. The pitch back and it pops up back of home plate.
- 8:58Johnny Stevenson with a 10, goes back to the screen.
- 9:08The Mets put one away, the first man in the ball game.
- 9:11And the batter coming up will be the left fielder, Len Gabelson.
- 9:22Gabelson the left hand batter with an average of 3-0-2. Seven home runs, 22 runs battered in.
- 9:40And the first pitch is low for ball one. One ball, no strikes.
- 9:45Gabelson acquired from the Chicago Cubs. Big strong left hand batter.
- 9:53Out of the University of Southern California. Change of pace, it's inside of mole ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 10:14Two balls, no strikes. One man out on the top of the first.
- 10:17The Giants against the New York Mets.
- 10:19And the next pitch is low. It's ball three. Three and all and the on deck batter is going to be made.
- 10:30Ending's on the Mets. He's going right now to join the Dodgers in first place by a game and a half.
- 10:35Next pitch is inside, ball four. And that's what Gabelson brings up.
- 10:54What is that? Four hits and eight times up in the first two ball games against the Mets.
- 10:59One of them a home run. It's going to be his 40th home run of the year.
- 11:05He's going to make it.
- 11:15Gabelson's got one about four steps off the back and that pitcher is picking right off the back with a perfect draw.
- 11:30And the first pitcher gets in the middle of the base hit.
- 11:33The pitcher was in the field for the first time in the game.
- 11:36He was involved but made home the first pitch. And that pick off serves him in big way. And Willie McGummie comes out.
- 11:53He's batting at 325 now with the base hit.
- 11:56Willie McGummie coming in batting at 280 with 32 home runs and 72 runs batted in.
- 12:02And the second is a major makes a home run.
- 12:06First pitch to McGummie is in the dirt.
- 12:08Now Maze goes for second.
- 12:10The throw there is in the dirt.
- 12:13Willie Maze is going out.
- 12:15The ball is in the play side.
- 12:17Great play and he took the ball out of the dirt.
- 12:22Throw two. Taking off the base.
- 12:25And the Giants go down in the first two runs on one hit.
- 12:28The one left on in the score. The end of one and a half and the Giants nothing and the Mets coming up.
- 12:33Now words from Viceroy Cigarettes.
- 12:42Which filtered cigarette should you be enjoying today?
- 12:45Some brands taste too strong as if they didn't even have a filter.
- 12:49And some taste too light.
- 12:51You know the kind. They never seem to satisfy your taste.
- 12:54But there is an answer and here it is.
- 12:57Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 12:59Not too strong and not too light.
- 13:02That's right.
- 13:08That's right. Viceroy.
- 13:10The fact is Viceroy is specifically designed to taste the way you'd like a filtered cigarette to taste.
- 13:16Not too strong. Not too light.
- 13:18Viceroy's got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 13:21When you try them you'll agree.
- 13:24Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 13:26That's right.
- 13:28Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 13:30Not too strong and not too light.
- 13:32That's right.
- 13:37Bottom half of first inning. The first half ending foot away and the Mets coming up to bat for the first time.
- 13:42I'll picture Bob Bullock.
- 13:44Bob is a right hand pitcher with a record of seven and four.
- 13:53He'll be pitching to Ron Rund.
- 13:57That's his first pitching shot.
- 13:59Ron coming up with that four hits and eight times up in this series so far.
- 14:04First two games foot away.
- 14:06And the four hits have all been two base hits.
- 14:08Ron now with ten doubles on the season.
- 14:10Ten of his twenty-three hits have been for two bases.
- 14:13He's batting at two fifty-three.
- 14:15He'll be followed by Johnny Lewis and then Ed Greenball.
- 14:20Bob Bullock, the big strong right hander and now he throws hard.
- 14:25Six foot four, two hundred pounds his first pitch.
- 14:28Air ball fouled over the top of the screen. Strike one.
- 14:33Bullock is twenty-seven years of age.
- 14:37Make it twenty-six years of age. He was born January 29, 1939.
- 14:42He resides in Hickory Grove, South Carolina.
- 14:45He was originally signed by the Giants. He played his first year back in 1957.
- 14:50Next pitch is a fastball in tight. Ron tries to get out of the way and it's off his bat against the screen.
- 14:54Strike two.
- 14:56Paul in last year, six and nine with the Giants in thirty-eight ball games.
- 15:00Here before, ten and six.
- 15:06This is his thirty-fifth appearance.
- 15:09He's a seven starter. His pitch back is high and one ball, two strikes.
- 15:18One ball, two strikes. Ron heard it. He leads it off for the men. No score.
- 15:24Final game of this pregame series. Single game today.
- 15:27Next pitch is high and tight again. It's ball two.
- 15:30Not even out of two and two.
- 15:39Giants have Willie McCovey at first base and second Haller near a shortstop.
- 15:44Tito Forintes at third base. Jim Ray Hart outfield. Len Gabelson on the left.
- 15:49Willie Mason center and Mattie Amu on right.
- 15:51Catcher is Tom Haller and the next pitch is foul back in the screen as Ron Hood keeps the count of two and two.
- 15:57This will have a day off on Monday and take up again against Houston for five games.
- 16:13Pitch is high. A fast ball up two.
- 16:15Ron has worked the count of three balls and two strikes.
- 16:20Ron has played in only twenty-eight previous ball games this year.
- 16:23It's been a tough year for him. He was out twice with injuries.
- 16:26He's been out for almost three months with a shoulder separation.
- 16:32Three-two pitch. Way inside and hits a third ball. He goes to first base.
- 16:38Inside to his ball.
- 16:41Ron as he went down to first base threw his bat at the ball which rolled over by the first base side of the foul.
- 16:48I just tossed his bat at him.
- 16:50You notice anything about Ron. You notice that he does nothing to help the other clock.
- 16:54If somebody happens to let a bat go out towards second base on a missed swing, he won't pick it up.
- 16:59He'll make the other clock get it.
- 17:01He's off for one swing and that's the win. He'll do it completely on your own.
- 17:05That'll bring up Johnny Lewis.
- 17:07Johnny, a left-hand batter, hitting two forty-eight. He takes a called strike.
- 17:11John with fourteen home runs and thirty-nine runs ratted in.
- 17:19Bob Boland checking with his catcher, Tom Haller.
- 17:22Ron Hunt at first base leading off.
- 17:25And the next pitch is way outside, a fastball missing one ball, one strike.
- 17:28A throw to first base but Hunt beats the tag.
- 17:34No score, no one out. About a half to first.
- 17:38That's to have their first batter on.
- 17:40The count is one and one on Johnny Lewis.
- 17:43Next pitch is fouled off out of play.
- 17:46The count goes to one ball and two strikes.
- 17:50Haller down there with a cardboard box trying to catch the ball from the box.
- 17:54And almost made it.
- 17:57He held it right above his head.
- 17:59It might have gone right on through and hit him on the head but it was off-line.
- 18:04What did they say? Get a basket.
- 18:08One ball, two strikes.
- 18:11Pitch back to Lewis, a swing on a missed strike three.
- 18:14Bob Boland gets his first strike out.
- 18:16That'll bring up Eddie Grainborel.
- 18:24Head batting 265 with eight home runs and 48 runs headed in.
- 18:39Grainborel a left-hand batter and his first pitch is outside, way outside, a one-hand grab by Tom Haller.
- 18:44Now he walks it back to the mound.
- 18:50It's all conference just a short one at the mound and then Haller back behind home plate.
- 19:04That is one for eight against the Giants.
- 19:09And his next pitch is swing on a missed strike one.
- 19:13One ball, one strike.
- 19:14On the pitch Ron Hunt made a bluff as though he might be going to second.
- 19:18Haller came out in drawing position ready to make a draw.
- 19:22He just joined us the Mets picked you off base in the first inning.
- 19:26Ben Gaberson picked off at first base and Willie Mays was thrown out trying to go down to second base and the ball had got away from the catcher.
- 19:33Now a pitch out but nothing on.
- 19:35No play at all on the count of two balls, one strike.
- 19:42One man out bottom half to first.
- 19:47Bob Bolan pitching for the San Francisco Giants.
- 19:50His record seven and four.
- 19:53And he throws the first base, Hunt has to get back in in a hurry.
- 19:56Got back faster than he had to.
- 19:58Makes sort of a half slide back in.
- 20:00No tag made by Willie McCovey.
- 20:03Hunt off again as Bolan sets up on top.
- 20:07And the next delivery just hit deep to right field.
- 20:10Hooked by the warning track he drives to one handed, misses the ball.
- 20:14Ron Hunt over to third base.
- 20:16Dean Hall there as the throw comes in and Eddie Gravewell goes to second.
- 20:24It's going to two base hit.
- 20:25On the play Mattie Alou missed just the ball.
- 20:29And at the last minute trying to jump in one handed.
- 20:32He was not back far enough.
- 20:34He had stopped.
- 20:35He had some more room to go back.
- 20:36But it goes to two base hit.
- 20:39Well the Mets have their first hit.
- 20:41Runners at second and third and Johnny Smith the batter.
- 20:45That two base hit for Gravewell is twenty-third.
- 20:51Club record is twenty-eight held by Ron Hunt who is on at third.
- 21:03John is playing their infield back with the exception of Willie McCovey at first base.
- 21:06Johnny Smith the batter hitting two sixty.
- 21:09Johnny has sixteen home runs.
- 21:10Clayton McCrumpet runs battered in with fifty-five.
- 21:13And his first pitch.
- 21:15Slider up too high and it's ball one.
- 21:19One ball no strike.
- 21:30One ball one strike.
- 21:32Now the next delivery a swing and a foul tip.
- 21:40Fast ball by Buller inside.
- 21:42Johnny Goingford fouled it off.
- 21:44Ball drop by the catcher Tom Hotter.
- 21:46One and one on Johnny Smith.
- 21:55And at one one the next delivery is a curve ball fouled off.
- 22:01Bill Bob Bolan has it down in his favor.
- 22:03One ball and two strikes.
- 22:09On deck batter for the Mets Joe Christopher.
- 22:13Mets trying to break in here in the bottom half for first.
- 22:15One away they have runners at second and third.
- 22:23And the one-two pitch to Smith.
- 22:25Swung on it Mets strike three and Johnny Smith strikes out.
- 22:29Giants picking up their second out and that will bring up Joe Christopher.
- 22:34Two outs picked up by the Giants in this game have been balls on strikeouts by Bob Bolan.
- 22:45Joe Christopher stepping in he's batting 247 with four home runs and 34 runs batted in.
- 22:59Joe a right hand batter and his first pitch a curve ball on the outside corner taken for a strike.
- 23:21In field playing back all the way around with two men away.
- 23:24Runners at second and third and the next pitch to Joe is a fast ball high.
- 23:28He's got it one ball one strike.
- 23:31Christopher's had one hit in the series one parade that was a double on the left field.
- 23:39The double being his 11th this year.
- 23:42One ball one strike the next delivery is foul tipped to strike two.
- 23:47Joe with a half swing trying to keep the bat out of the way and still getting the bat out far enough in the strike zone to be nicked by the ball.
- 23:55He's got it one ball and two strikes.
- 24:03Bob Bolan checking with the catcher he has the signs here's the pitch it's inside for ball two.
- 24:09Fast ball missing way inside two balls and two strikes.
- 24:12Christopher had to tuck away on the pitch.
- 24:17Two and two with runners at second and third.
- 24:21Ron Hunt was hit by a pitch ball on a three two pitch as a leadoff batter after Johnny Lewis struck out.
- 24:27Ed Greenbull doubled off the glove of Mattia Lewin Wright the ball misplayed by Lew and Johnny Smith struck out.
- 24:35Now at two two the pitch back to Joe Christopher is high for ball three.
- 24:40He's got it three balls and two strikes.
- 24:42Yandex batter for the Mets is Johnny Stevenson the left hand batter.
- 24:52So right here the pitch that Bob Bolan has that he likes to throw in a jam will be the pitch that will be coming up there with first base open.
- 25:00And at three two curve ball hits foul.
- 25:05So Christopher keeps a count of three balls and two strikes in the foul ball.
- 25:26Ron Hunt at third base moving up Ed Greenbull at second and again a three two.
- 25:30Fast ball three on a Mets strike three.
- 25:33So Bob Bolan leaves two on the bases giving up one hit hitting one batter and striking out three.
- 25:39No run.
- 25:40And the score at the end of one the Giants nothing the Mets nothing.
- 25:49Well this is the last appearance for the Giants in Sherry Stadium.
- 25:55But the Mets still have plenty of baseball left to play.
- 25:57In fact they'll be playing double duty on Tuesday night against the Houston Astros.
- 26:01It'll be a twilight doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
- 26:04And following that another doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
- 26:08Game time will be at one o'clock on Wednesday afternoon.
- 26:11The Mets playing a total of five games against the Astros in the next series.
- 26:15The final game will be Thursday afternoon on September 2nd and that will close out the homestead.
- 26:21As the Mets play five with Houston.
- 26:24So make your arrangements to come on out and join in on the double fun.
- 26:27Friday night or on Tuesday night starting at 6 o'clock and on Wednesday a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
- 26:33Single game to close out the series on Thursday afternoon.
- 26:37Right now we pause for station identification.
- 26:39This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 26:43And this is your station for Mets baseball in the northeast.
- 26:45WGY 810 on the islands connect today.
- 26:48The time is 2.28.
- 26:54Bob Kiner along with Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from Shea Stadium.
- 26:58Actually Lindsey is not here at Shea Stadium.
- 27:00He's flying above it.
- 27:02Reporting the ball game on television from a point high in the air.
- 27:09First man up will be Willie McCovey.
- 27:11He was left at home plate but Willie May tried to go down to second base.
- 27:14And the ball had got away from Johnny Stevenson.
- 27:17And the first pitch is strike one on Willie McCovey.
- 27:20Willie batting for the first time officially in the ball game has a 280 average.
- 27:2432 home runs and 72 runs ran it in.
- 27:28Curve ball by Fisher is in.
- 27:30It breaks over on the outside corner.
- 27:32Strike two.
- 27:41Covey two for seven in the first two ball games.
- 27:44Both of those hits were home runs.
- 27:46One of them off the scoreboard and right field a tremendous drive.
- 27:49He brings up it down to first base foul.
- 27:51Ball kicked by Eddie Creamball as he comes over to pick it up.
- 27:55Downstays it's strike two.
- 28:03The Mets had two base runners in the first.
- 28:04The Giants had two base runners in the first.
- 28:06Another ball game all even.
- 28:07Both teams with one hit and no score.
- 28:14First base umpire Mel Steiner checking out the ball.
- 28:17It was thrown to him by Jack Fisher.
- 28:20Now Jack has it back.
- 28:27There's Lindsey right now just holding by in the Goodyear blip.
- 28:35Now two strikes to pitch back to McCovey.
- 28:37It's fouled off.
- 28:43He hasn't even got the door open on the gondola underneath the blip part.
- 28:47Maybe Lindsey's going to try a parachute jump.
- 28:51Lindsey Nelson's our man in charge of all altitudes.
- 28:55He was the fellow who went up to the top of the astrodome too.
- 28:59Now again at two strikes.
- 29:01Then a ball hit down to first base off the handle.
- 29:03McCovey doesn't even run.
- 29:04As Creamball comes up and goes over to the back.
- 29:07McCovey just plotting on down to first base.
- 29:09He goes all the way down, tags a bag and then kind of lumber off.
- 29:16Now the Mets have one away at the top of the second.
- 29:18The batter will be Jim Ray Hart.
- 29:22Start a right hand batter hitting 297 this year with 16 home runs and 68 runs batted in.
- 29:32Hart last year in his freshman year had 31 home runs.
- 29:36Battled at 286. First pitch to him is inside its ball one.
- 29:48Hart three for eight in the previous two games.
- 29:51One of them a long home run with two runs.
- 29:53His pitch back is a slider over.
- 29:55It's one ball and one strike.
- 30:05One ball, one strike.
- 30:07Jack Fisher back again.
- 30:08A sidearm curve ball and stays inside.
- 30:10So they get it now.
- 30:11Two balls, one strike.
- 30:19Jack started his major league work with a ball of Orioles.
- 30:22Went over to San Francisco and then the Mets picked him up in a special draft.
- 30:26He has done quite a job for the Mets.
- 30:28His 2-1 delivery hit foul.
- 30:30A fastball swung on and hit foul to the right side.
- 30:34One of two balls and two strikes.
- 30:39One away.
- 30:40We're in the top of the second.
- 30:41No score in the ball game.
- 30:44Mets against the judge.
- 30:56And the next delivery by Fisher is a fastball perched out into right center field.
- 31:00Time for Lewis to get to it.
- 31:07Good running play by Johnny Lewis.
- 31:10If you want to know whether the ball is live or not, that was a check swing.
- 31:14And the ball has got about 365 feet away in right center field.
- 31:19He tried to home up on the ball.
- 31:24That'll bring up the catcher Tom Howler. Tom, a left hand batter, his average is 244.
- 31:31Ten home runs and 34 runs batted in.
- 31:33He takes the first pitch. It's long.
- 31:35A ring-gold chug-a-mug is a wide-mouthed last mug that holds 12 ounces of beer.
- 31:40And it even feels right when you pick it up.
- 31:42They're just about the handiest first punches in town.
- 31:45You'll find special chug-a-mug displays in your area.
- 31:48Six pitches popped up back at second.
- 31:51Roy McCullin calling for it five to ten.
- 31:54Moving out now a little further into center field and he makes the play.
- 31:57That retire is a side in order.
- 31:59And the score at the end of one and a half in him, so that's nothing to giant nothing.
- 32:03You've been wondering what Swedish Americans sing after this mortgage bar.
- 32:07Listen to this.
- 32:09Tuoralleri is a song that Swedish Americans sing over and over at their parties and picnics
- 32:25until they raise a fearful thirst.
- 32:28Then they change their tune.
- 32:39Elan Gorr is a traditional Swedish drinking song.
- 32:42And often the beer they drink is Rhine Gold Extra Dry.
- 32:46In fact, in New York City, where there are more Swedes than in all of Husqvarna,
- 32:51more people drink Rhine Gold than any other beer.
- 32:55Why do Swedish Americans like Rhine Gold?
- 32:57We don't know.
- 32:59But we must be doing something right.
- 33:12Bottom half of the second, the Mets coming up.
- 33:14Again, the John Spitzer by a bowler.
- 33:18The first batter for New York will be Johnny Stevenson.
- 33:21He'll be followed by Lawrence Vipona and then by Roy McCullin.
- 33:26That's how the six, seven, and eight batters against the right-hander here in the bottom half of the second.
- 33:31No score in the game.
- 33:33And Johnny now leading off.
- 33:34A left-hand batter hitting 231.
- 33:36He tries to run.
- 33:37It's not far enough toward third base.
- 33:38Bowman comes off the mound, makes the throw to first base and dies.
- 33:45One man out.
- 33:46And Lawrence Vipona now the batter.
- 33:48We're filled up with batting in the bottom half of the third.
- 33:57Alex Johnson has hit a home run with a man on.
- 34:00And the Phillies now lead the Dodgers by a score of at least five to nothing.
- 34:04Donald Dean knocked out of the box.
- 34:06And Nick Wilhite has come into the ball game in the third inning.
- 34:09Ray Colt pitching for the Phillies.
- 34:11The Dodgers lead by a game and a half in the National League.
- 34:14First pitch, the supporters inside, it's ball one.
- 34:17Arm batting 236 with 19 home runs and 46 runs leaded in.
- 34:22Big strong right-hand batter and a curved back is outside.
- 34:26Two balls, no strikes.
- 34:28At the end of one, Houston nothing, Pittsburgh nothing.
- 34:30Don Notherbar pitching against Bob Prince.
- 34:35Right here, no score with one out in the bottom half of the second.
- 34:38Bowman back and a curve ball is swung on.
- 34:40Two balls and one strike.
- 34:43Chicago, Milwaukee, Bill Paul is pitching for the Cubs against Hank Fisher for the Braves.
- 34:48St. Louis and Cincinnati, Ray Sedecky pitching for the Cardinals against Sammy Ellis for the Reds.
- 34:59Two balls, one strike.
- 35:01Bowman back again with a curve and then high in the air at the left field.
- 35:04A ball just a little bit too high coming over the left fielder Len Gilson.
- 35:07Willie May standing by.
- 35:09And Willie left him taken.
- 35:10If Willie was right there he could have made the play.
- 35:13That ball was a towering fly ball to run after.
- 35:15Lawrence will call it just a fraction underneath it.
- 35:19The other tennis pickups are second out and that brings up Roy McMillan.
- 35:27Roy with two hits and six downs up in the series batting that 251 now.
- 35:33One home run and 34 runs batted in.
- 35:41And the first pitch to McMillan is a breaking pitch that's in for a golf strike.
- 35:46Boland is a sidearm right hander, tough on right hand batter.
- 35:50He wheels around, comes away a port Arthur and he comes back with a fastball.
- 35:56It's fouled and it's a stand strike two.
- 36:13Next pitch is fouled off again.
- 36:16Downholes it's right there.
- 36:18The Gemini-Pi space flight is over and the astronauts Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad say they are feeling fine
- 36:24and they are willing to go up next week if necessary.
- 36:27Doctors aboard the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain say that astronauts are in amazingly excellent condition
- 36:32and are perfectly happy.
- 36:34Two strike pitch and in the left field a base set.
- 36:37Roy McMillan on a curve ball coming up at first base with the Mets second hit of the game.
- 36:43That will bring up Jack Fisher.
- 36:45To continue with the Gemini report, Cooper and Conrad indicated that what they wanted most was some sleep and a shade.
- 36:53Mission director Christopher Kraft says he is fairly certain that Gemini-Pi ran out of fuel just prior to splashdown.
- 37:03Kraft said in Houston, the game was reading below zero at the time.
- 37:07Sounds like the way we all drive our cars.
- 37:10Next pitch back is outside of fastball for ball one.
- 37:19Jack Fisher the batter hitting at 167.
- 37:21Roy McMillan at first base.
- 37:24And Bowler now back again and a fastball is filed off to count at one ball one strike.
- 37:30Fisher has had 11 hits so far this year and 66 times up.
- 37:34Two of the hits have been two base hits. He has driven in two runs.
- 37:44Nothing nothing ball game.
- 37:46And the next delivery a fastball low and away ball two, a backhand catch by Tom Haller.
- 37:51Two balls one strike.
- 38:03Balling again and the curve is inside. It's three balls and one strike and Jack Fisher with Ron Hunt on deck.
- 38:22Three balls one strike.
- 38:24Bowler back to Fisher and a swing and a fastball.
- 38:27Strike two. That fills it out and Roy McMillan at first base will be going on the next pitch.
- 38:32Three and two with two away, the bottom half of the second. No score.
- 38:39McMillan runs and the three-two pitch is high for ball four.
- 38:42So Roy heases up going into second base and Jack Fisher walks to first.
- 38:47That is the first walk issued by Bob Pollard.
- 38:50He did put Ron Hunt on when he hit him with a three-two pitch his first time up.
- 38:54Ron batting at 253.
- 38:59Ron batting with runners at first and second base.
- 39:14Time gone if Jack Fisher puts on a jacket.
- 39:16It's a very autumn type day here at Chase Stadium.
- 39:23Temperature is right around 73.
- 39:26By now the sun has been blotted out.
- 39:29It's a little bit overcast.
- 39:31A swing at the first pitch by Ron Hunt on the slider at strike one.
- 39:40The Mets have had runners on the bases in this ball game previous this inning.
- 39:47In the first they had runners at second and third but Roland tightened up and struck out
- 39:52Charlie Smith and Joe Christopher to leave them there.
- 39:55And then he also struck out Johnny Lewis so he struck out the side of the third.
- 40:00Bobby Wine has hit a home run in the third for the Phillies so they have scored at least
- 40:05four runs in the third and they lead by at least seven to nothing over the Dodgers.
- 40:09Next pitch is a curve on the inside corner strike two.
- 40:12Ron Hunt got the pitch with this side.
- 40:16Ronald Steen knocked out of the box.
- 40:17Nick Wilhite now pitching for the Dodgers.
- 40:20Home run coming off Wilhite.
- 40:26And the two strike delivery high-sized pass ball.
- 40:29One ball, two strikes.
- 40:30Ron ducking away.
- 40:46And now the next pitch, pass ball fouled off.
- 40:50All right in tight, Ron fouled it over the top of the screen.
- 40:53One ball, two strikes.
- 40:59Roy McMillan back to second base.
- 41:01Jack Fisher on it first.
- 41:02No score in the game.
- 41:03Two minutes away in the bottom half for second.
- 41:14And the next delivery curve ball hit fouled on the left field line.
- 41:17Ron just out in front.
- 41:19Ball going into the stands and McKenna remains with one ball and two strikes.
- 41:37Although the Giants have a powerful looking ball club with such names as Willie Mays,
- 41:41and he is powerful, they have done a lot of their winning on their fine pitching.
- 41:45Now the next pitch is a curve ball inside, two balls and two strikes.
- 41:49The Willie Mays, Willie McKovey, Jim Ray Hart.
- 41:52Ben Gamberson, the Giants, has had a very formidable crew with the bat,
- 41:56but they don't score a lot of runs and when they do score runs, they score them in clusters.
- 42:01And it's been good pitching that has held them in tight in this race.
- 42:04Two-two pitch has hit foul again.
- 42:06This one off the end of the bat and Ron Hunt takes the line.
- 42:09The ball is caught as it went into the stands by one of the spectators.
- 42:21Good pitching by Bob Bollens, Mike Lindsay in relief,
- 42:25Massenori Morikami in relief, Bob Shaw, and even Warren Spahn is chipped in for two out of three.
- 42:32Now again a foul ball.
- 42:33Well, Ron Hunt battles away against Bob Bullens, and it's a two-ball and two-strike.
- 42:39Willie scored five runs in the third, so they lead by a score of 8-0 over the Giants.
- 42:45Ball game going to the top of the fourth.
- 42:47Ray Culp, the beneficiary of those eight runs, working for Philadelphia.
- 42:57Two balls, two strikes. Bullens will try again.
- 43:00His next delivery, pass ball, swung up, and missed like three.
- 43:04The Bullens get this fourth strike out, and it came in.
- 43:08And the clutch against Ron Hunt.
- 43:10In the inning, no runs.
- 43:12One hit, no errors, and a walk.
- 43:14Two men left for the score at the end of two.
- 43:16The Mets nothing, the Giants nothing.
- 43:26Well, the New York Mets have put their final revised edition of the New York Mets yearbook out for purchase right here at the ballpark.
- 43:35It's available all the time.
- 43:37It has up-to-date information on all the newcomers, Dave Otter, who just came up from Atlanta, for example, where he won 11-1 loss one.
- 43:46One of the new relief pitchers for the Mets.
- 43:48It also has up-to-date information on Casey Stengel and how he is coming along.
- 43:52And incidentally, Casey is coming along in good shape. He goes out for walks and strolls now, up and walking after his operation, or a displace fracture of his hip.

- 44:34That's 50 cents to Mets yearbook, Shea Stadium, Flushing, New York.
- 44:46Now the Giants coming up on the top of the third. Don't score in the ball game.
- 44:49And the first man up will be Hallamere.
- 44:51Hallamere batting for the first time.
- 44:53A right hand batter hitting at 233.
- 44:57And Fisher with his first pitch. It's locked down the right field line.
- 45:00Ron Hunt has a long run. Is he going to get good? He can't take it.
- 45:03It's all locked in. Here goes to the second baseman. Holds there.
- 45:06Little top double. Now the right field line is locked right near the line.
- 45:11And back up Eddie Crane, who was going out in front of Joe Christopher, who was coming in and also just beyond the reach of Ron Hunt as he came from his second base position.
- 45:21Ron went about 123 trying to get to the ball.
- 45:24All the Giants have a baseman at second base for the first time in the ball game.
- 45:29But going out in the top of the third and the batter coming up is a shortstop.
- 45:33Tito Fuente.
- 45:39He's got him that pitch. Hallamere was full just once. The curve ball was outside.
- 45:46Fuente has no home runs and no runs battered. And he's batting 175, a right hand batter.
- 45:51And he fouls the first pitch. It's like one.
- 46:07One strike down on the right hand batter. Fuente was recalled from Tacoma where he batted 311 at 19 home runs.
- 46:13He joined the club about 10 days ago.
- 46:17His one strike delivery. Fastball, putt and sword, second base, a good hit, base hit.
- 46:21Coming in is Ron Hunt. He has no play.
- 46:25Perfect front by Fuente and on the play Hallamere rules the third.
- 46:38So that base hit for Fuente is a base hit.
- 46:42It's an ace in the lake and 41 times up.
- 46:45A hundred Giants threatened here with no one off the top of the third.
- 46:48The batter will be the pitcher.
- 46:50They'll know what record they are breaking that belongs to the Met Ball Club.
- 46:55Don't forget that you can get yours by mail by simply sending in 50 cents to Met Yearbook.
- 47:00Address it to Shea Stadium, Plessy, New York.
- 47:03That's 50 cents to Met Yearbook, Shea Stadium, Plessy, New York.
- 47:15Now the Giants coming up on the top of the third.
- 47:17They'll score in the ball game and the first man up will be Hallamere.
- 47:20Now batting for the first time.
- 47:22A right hand batter hitting at 233.
- 47:26And Fisher with his first pitch.
- 47:27It's popped down the right field line. Ron Hunt has a long run.
- 47:30Is he going to get good? He can't hit him.
- 47:32Ball's off in.
- 47:33Here goes in the second base and holds there.
- 47:35Little pop double down the right field line.
- 47:38It's dropped right near the line.
- 47:40And back of Eddie Greenpole who was going out in front of Joe Christopher who was coming in.
- 47:45And also just beyond the reach of Ron Hunt as he came from his second base position.
- 47:50Ron went about 120 feet trying to get to the ball.
- 47:54All the Giants have a baserunner at second base for the first time in the ball game.
- 47:58But going out in the top of the third and the batter coming up is the shortstop, Keaton Hill Fuente.
- 48:08On that pitch Hallamere was full just once.
- 48:10The curve ball was outside.
- 48:14Fuente has no home runs and no runs batted in.
- 48:17He's batting 175, a right hand batter.
- 48:19He fouls the first pitch.
- 48:21Strike one.
- 48:35One strike count on the right hand batter.
- 48:37Fuente is as we call from Tacoma where he batted 311, that 19 home run.
- 48:42He joined the club about 10 days ago.
- 48:46His one strike delivery, fastball, put it toward second base.
- 48:49It could be at base six.
- 48:51Coming in to Ron Hunt, he has no play.
- 48:54Perfect front by Fuente.
- 48:56And on the play Hallamere moves the third.
- 49:07And on the play, it's at base six for Fuente.
- 49:12It's at base six in the major lakes and 41 times up.
- 49:15And the Giants right here was going off the top of the third.
- 49:18The batter will be the pitcher, Bob Bowling.
- 49:22Bowling has four hits and 32 times up.
- 49:24He's batting 125.
- 49:31Right hand batter and his first pitch is swung on a miss.
- 49:34Strike one.
- 49:35A strike one count.
- 49:38That's a play in their infield back looking for a double play.
- 49:41They'll give up a run here with no one out.
- 49:44Charlie Smith is about halfway.
- 49:48No one out.
- 49:51Top of the third.
- 49:52Next pitch is a curve dug out of the dirt by Johnny Stevenson.
- 49:55One ball, one strike.
- 50:09One ball, one strike.
- 50:10The next delivery swung on a miss.
- 50:12Strike two.
- 50:13A throw to first base.
- 50:14But Fuente's is back with no time.
- 50:16Kido Fuente's at first base got his first pitch in series with that bunt.
- 50:20It was a perfect bunt just like the book has laid it out.
- 50:26Ball pushed by the pitcher just hard enough and Ron Hudson couldn't make a play.
- 50:31Now the one-two delivery.
- 50:33Curveball fouled back in the screen.
- 50:36So they can't hold it.
- 50:37One ball and two strikes.
- 50:39On deck batter is Maddie Allou.
- 50:49No one away.
- 50:50The score tied at nothing, nothing.
- 51:00Fischer's set to work.
- 51:01A look at first base.
- 51:03His next pitch is hit right through the middle of base there.
- 51:07Fuente's going over to third base.
- 51:09Johnny Lewis throws the ball in the second base and on the play.
- 51:12The Giants score the first run of the ball game as Al Rehner starts from third.
- 51:22No ball balling drives in his third run of the season.
- 51:26A two-strike.
- 51:27They hit through the middle on the curveball.
- 51:29And the Giants still have runners at first and third and the batter will be Maddie Allou.
- 51:40They're fouled out at first time up.
- 51:43Mets getting some action in their bullpen now as Gordon Richardson takes off his jacket and goes out to the pitching mound in the bullpen.
- 51:52Gordon, a left-hand pitcher.
- 51:55Allou batting two-thirty-five and the Mets now have their infield in at first and third, back at second and short.
- 52:03First pitch by Fischer to Allou is fouled away.
- 52:06And the Mets strike one, Fischer with a fastball over the outside part of the play.
- 52:11Maddie Allou loves to front.
- 52:13He has great speed.
- 52:17The Mets have their third baseman, Charlie Smith, even with the bag.
- 52:20And the infield has shortened up.
- 52:22Eddie Crane will also play in front of the runner at first.
- 52:25One-strike pitch is fouled off again.
- 52:27Strike two.
- 52:32Two-strike count. The Giants lead one-up, inch-going to run here in the top of the third, going away.
- 52:46Now Crane Bull has dropped back with a two-strike count, not looking for a bun.
- 52:50And the next pitch is a slip pitch outside, a change-up missing. It's one ball, two strikes.
- 53:10Allou with two home runs, an 18 runs batted in.
- 53:14And Fischer back to him with a curve that's hit down the line in foul territory. Crane Bull back by the stand.
- 53:20And he can't get to it. He stumbles over the top down in right field, but he's not hurt.
- 53:26Ball going into the stands. The count remains at one ball and two strikes.
- 53:32At the end of one-and-a-half innings, Houston two, Pittsburgh nothing. Not a ball against Bob French.
- 53:37At the end of one, Chicago nothing, Milwaukee nothing. Ball against Fischer.
- 53:41At the end of one-and-a-half innings, St. Louis nothing. The Reds coming up.
- 53:45Sammy Elm is going for Cincinnati. Grace Sadecki pitching for the Cardinals.
- 53:49And at the end of three-and-a-half, Philadelphia eight. The Dodgers nothing.
- 53:54Now Fischer at one-two. And the next delivery is fouled into the dugout of the Giants, right by the on-deck batter, Len Gabelson.
- 54:01He dives out of the way and the ball goes into the dugout.
- 54:17Ball attention focused in the dugout right from our point. We can't see exactly if it hit anyone, but from the way the crowd gathered around, it looks like it might have hit.
- 54:26Hey, Sue Salou is now getting up and walking away. Not seriously. Either that or Orlando Cepeda.
- 54:32Next pitch is outside and we count now two balls and two strikes.
- 54:37Cepeda walking up to the front part of the dugout, talking with the home plate umpire and also with some of the Mets players, indicating that it hit the ball out to the field.
- 54:52Two balls, two strikes. And the pitch outside and that fills at that three-and-two.
- 54:58Three-and-zero with runners at first and third. No one away. We're in the top of the third. The Giants lead one-nothing.
- 55:10And a three-two. The runner not going, the pitch is low and inside ball. Four and that holds them up.
- 55:24Pitches are loaded on the second walk issued by Jack Fisher.
- 55:32And the batter coming up is Len Gabelson.
- 55:35Len, a left-hand batter, walked his first time up in four pitches ahead of early May. Gabelson batting at three-oh-two.
- 55:43Now throwing along with Gordon Richardson, a left-hander, is Bob Morheads, a right-hander.
- 55:49Out on the bullpen for the Mets. The first pitch to Gabelson is swung on a miss, strike one.
- 55:54Gabelson going for a high pass ball. Pitch above the letters and Fisher picking up a strike.
- 56:01Gabelson batting with seven home runs and 22 runs better than.
- 56:06He's at one hit in the series against the Mets. That was a home run.
- 56:09There's one strike pitch. It's inside. It's ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 56:16That's what they're infield back at first, second, and short.
- 56:21Still hoping to pick up two to give up one.
- 56:24Giants played one-nothing. Charlie Smith, the third base, is just about halfway. He can go anyway.
- 56:31Now to one-one pitch. It's hit down to second base.
- 56:35Picked up by Ron Hunt over to McMillan. He has no throw on the first base, but the fourth play is picked up at second.
- 56:41But on the play, the Giants score their second run.
- 56:44Pitu Florentes coming to drop from third base and moving on down to third on the play by a bowler.
- 56:50Now it's runners at first and third with Woody Mays coming up.
- 56:54Woody Mays the batter.
- 57:15And his first pitch is inside a fastball.
- 57:18He started swinging and spun around, but held the bat back and it's ball one.
- 57:24Mays all geared up. He's got 40 home runs and 86 runs batted in. He's batting 325.
- 57:29He has been on a terror streak here in this month, having hit 16 home runs so far.
- 57:38Really five for nine against the Mets in the series.
- 57:43And Fisher now back at one. Oh, and the next pitch is in the dirt for ball two.
- 57:48Mays says, look at the ball, and throws the home plate on fire.
- 57:52Dan Landis takes a look and throws it out of play.
- 58:04Two balls, no strikes on Woody Mays.
- 58:12Fisher a look at first and a throw there, but Gabelson who was picked off first base his first time on,
- 58:17only a couple steps away.
- 58:20He was only a few steps away when he was picked off.
- 58:23Down the two off edge.
- 58:53So, Woody Mays writes a new record book in the National League.
- 59:03He has just hit a 17 home run in the month of August, and that is an all-time record in the National League.
- 59:10Well, it had to happen. There's no doubt about that.
- 59:15Willie Dodd, he's the hottest man in baseball. Certainly a hall of famer, one of the greatest players that ever lived.
- 59:24That home run is 494. It puts him ahead of Lou Gehrig in the home run, Debbie.
- 59:30And it also knocked out Jack Fisher.
- 59:33High change up. Perfect pitch for Mays to hit. It's all over the left center field now.
- 59:39And the Giants lead by a score of five to nothing on the free run home run.
- 59:43Now, Willie Mays is 41st home run this year. He leads the Major League.
- 59:55Coming in now, left-hander Gordon Richardson in place of Jack Fisher.
- 1:00:01Jack officially was credited with two and one-third innings of work.
- 1:00:08Charged with five runs, he gave up five hits.
- 1:00:13Jack struck out none and walked two.
- 1:00:19And Gordon Richardson will be pitching to Willie McCovey.
- 1:00:23So while he warms up, we'll run down the scores once again.
- 1:00:26At the end of fourth, Philadelphia nine, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:00:30Wilhite now pitching for the Dodgers. Osteen was the starting pitcher.
- 1:00:33Ray Culp, working for Philadelphia.
- 1:00:35Corrales, Alex Johnson, Bob Wine, Richie Allen home run.
- 1:00:39At the end of two and a half, Houston two, Pittsburgh nothing.
- 1:00:42Don Nottabart pitching for the Astros against Bob Fritz.
- 1:00:46At the end of one, Chicago nothing, Milwaukee nothing.
- 1:00:48Bill Paul pitching against Hank Fisher.
- 1:00:51St. Louis nothing, Cincinnati nothing after one.
- 1:00:53Ray Sedecky working for the Cardinals against Sammy Ellis.
- 1:00:57In the American League, the Yankees are scheduled at Kansas City for a single game.
- 1:01:01Boston playing two at Chicago at the end of one, Boston nothing, Chicago nothing.
- 1:01:05Marble gets pitching for the Red Sox against Howard for the White Sox.
- 1:01:09Baltimore at Washington for a single ballgame at the end of five and a half inning.
- 1:01:13Baltimore four, Washington three.
- 1:01:16Don Larson relieving no tapas in the sixth.
- 1:01:19Cluster Nirm still in the ballgame at the starting pitcher for the Senators.
- 1:01:23Dick Ninh home run the fourth with no one on.
- 1:01:25At the end of one, Cleveland nothing, Minnesota nothing.
- 1:01:28The Targon against Merritt, two newcomers to the American League.
- 1:01:32Also scheduled Detroit and Los Angeles.
- 1:01:34Right now we pause for station identification.
- 1:01:36This is the New York Vance Baseball Network.
- 1:01:39This is WGY 810 on the dial, Schenectady.
- 1:01:41And while we have this opportunity, we'll take advantage of it to appraise you of
- 1:01:45President Johnson's just completed press conference.
- 1:01:48He opened his conference, that is, Texas Farm, by congratulating the astronauts
- 1:01:52and announcing plans for the astronauts, as he indicated earlier when he talked with them,
- 1:01:57that they would be going on a world tour along with other astronauts to better
- 1:02:01world understanding of the situations now taking place.
- 1:02:07The President announced the end of the 75-day old shipping strike, but in response to
- 1:02:13a reporter's query as to the status of the steel strike, could give no answer,
- 1:02:17but that he hoped it would be settled before the Tuesday deadline.
- 1:02:20The President announced the appointment of John Gronowski,
- 1:02:23U.S. Postmaster General as Ambassador to Poland.
- 1:02:26The ambassador will be Lawrence O'Brien, who has been up to this time a special
- 1:02:29assistant to the President.
- 1:02:31He also touched on international situations, saying that for the first time
- 1:02:36the agreement is now in the Dominican Republic.
- 1:02:38He is also hoping for a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute between
- 1:02:41Pakistan and India.
- 1:02:43We'll have further details on the 6 p.m. news on WGY.
- 1:02:52The first of all two strikes, Richardson on the left hand pitch, taking a sign
- 1:02:56from Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:03:00And his next pitch is fouled over the screen.
- 1:03:02Another counter hold at one and two.
- 1:03:13Major League record for home runs in one month is held by Rudy York.
- 1:03:17Only one other batter has hit more than 16 in one month, along with Willie May.
- 1:03:23May Ruth has hit 17.
- 1:03:25Next pitch is fouled back in the screen, and the count stays at one ball and
- 1:03:29two strikes.
- 1:03:43And the next delivery is swung on at miss, strike three, actually a foul tip.
- 1:03:47It was held on two by Gordon Richardson, the indication by the umpire that the
- 1:03:51ball was a foul tip.
- 1:03:53So Richardson strikes out his first man.
- 1:03:55That was a first strike out against the Genets in the game so far, and the
- 1:03:59Mets now have their second out, and the batter will be Jim Ray Hart.
- 1:04:04Jim flied out to center field his first time up.
- 1:04:13He's batting at 296, a right hand batter.
- 1:04:15And he takes the first pitch for a called strike.
- 1:04:18Hart has hit 16 home runs this year and driven in 68.
- 1:04:23Giants lead 5-0, scoring five runs here in the third.
- 1:04:29Richardson 26 years of age, 6-foot-jaw, 185.
- 1:04:35Hart's going left-hander, last year won four, lost two, four.
- 1:04:40Five deep to right field.
- 1:04:42Back in the warning track is Joe Christopher.
- 1:04:44He is there.
- 1:04:45He makes the catch.
- 1:04:47That retires the strike, but in the end the Giants score five runs on Morbay
- 1:04:52six.
- 1:04:53There were no errors and no one left out.
- 1:04:59At the score at the end of two and a half innings, the Giants five.
- 1:05:05Mets is up eight.
- 1:05:06Here's a bit of advice about your car that may come in handy.
- 1:05:10There goes a driver who doesn't care much about money.
- 1:05:16He is wasting gasoline.
- 1:05:18Shell mileage experts will tell you that when you accelerate with a wide open
- 1:05:22throttle, your car may be getting only five miles per gallon.
- 1:05:27That's right, five miles per gallon.
- 1:05:30That's pretty expensive, so Shell experts offer this tip.
- 1:05:34Take it easy when you're taking off and watch your mileage improve.
- 1:05:39Of course, the gasoline you use can affect your mileage too.
- 1:05:43That's why Shell blends a mileage ingredient called platformate into
- 1:05:46super shell.
- 1:05:48Platformate actually contains more energy per gallon than the finest
- 1:05:52hundred octane aviation gasoline, energy that turns into mileage as you
- 1:05:57drive.
- 1:05:58So remember this advice from the mileage experts at Shell.
- 1:06:02Avoid those fast takeoffs and keep your tank filled with super shell
- 1:06:06gasoline.
- 1:06:07It's blended to help you get good mileage.
- 1:06:11All the Giants sent eight men to the plate in the third inning.
- 1:06:14You got five of them across home plate.
- 1:06:16All the way around the bases they lead by a score of five to nothing.
- 1:06:19Now they take the field and they have made one change.
- 1:06:21Willie McCovey has been taken out of the ballgame.
- 1:06:24Glenn Gabelson has moved in at first base from left field.
- 1:06:27Mattia Lew, who was in right field, has moved to left field to take
- 1:06:30Gabelson's place.
- 1:06:31And in the ballgame, in batting in the fourth spot of the batting
- 1:06:34order, Ken Henderson now playing right field.
- 1:06:38This will have Johnny Lewis against Bob Bolin here in the bottom half of
- 1:06:41third.
- 1:06:42And the first pitch to the left hand batter is the curveball inside
- 1:06:44at ball one.
- 1:06:46Johnny batting for the second time.
- 1:06:48Look out.
- 1:06:50This is a fastball.
- 1:06:52It's the first time out.
- 1:06:53Bob Bolin has struck out four.
- 1:06:55He got three in the first.
- 1:06:56Next pitch is looked at for a called strike.
- 1:06:58One ball, one strike.
- 1:07:07And the one-one delivery popped up.
- 1:07:09The second baseman, Hal O'Neal, going back.
- 1:07:11The right fielder, Ken Henderson, and Willie Mays off of converging.
- 1:07:15Henderson calls.
- 1:07:16Mays lets him take it.
- 1:07:21Now the Mets will have Eddie Creampool coming up.
- 1:07:23Eddie doubled off the glove of Mattia Lew in right field his first time
- 1:07:26up.
- 1:07:27Ball was misplayed by Lew and went for a two-base hit.
- 1:07:31Mets had runners at second and third in the first with one man away.
- 1:07:35They were left there when Smith and Christopher struck out.
- 1:07:38They had runners at first and second in the second with two men on.
- 1:07:43And Ron Hunt struck out.
- 1:07:44A ground ball on the first pitch hit down to the first baseman, Gabelson.
- 1:07:47He goes over to the pitcher.
- 1:07:48With the throw on, he makes the play at first to retire Creampool.
- 1:07:52That'll bring up Charlie Smith.
- 1:07:56Charlie 0 for one, batting that 260.
- 1:08:01Creampool before the out, batting 267.
- 1:08:11Giants five, the Mets nothing, two men out, bottom half the third.
- 1:08:15Bob Pullman working for the Giants and giving up two hits.
- 1:08:18And at first pitch, Smith is down low at ball one.
- 1:08:32The 1-0 delivery and a curve ball is bounced toward third.
- 1:08:35On crew into right field, ball bouncing by the glove of Jim Ray Hart.
- 1:08:39It's picked up by Mattia Lew and Smith holds it first base.
- 1:08:44The Mets have their third base hit in the game.
- 1:08:48And with two men out, the batter is Joe Christopher.
- 1:08:59Joe struck out his first time up, batting at 246.
- 1:09:06Joe has his four home runs, driven in 34.
- 1:09:10And the first pitch is called a strike, right around the knees, strike one.
- 1:09:22The Mets are playing their 130th ball game.
- 1:09:26After this homestand, they have only 11 more dates at home.
- 1:09:31One strike pitch is swung on and missed, strike two.
- 1:09:37Two home runs after five games with Houston, two on Tuesday night,
- 1:09:42two on Wednesday afternoon, and one on Thursday afternoon.
- 1:09:46Now two strikes, a fastball in tight, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:10:02Ball went back again and missing again.
- 1:10:04Fastball two, Mitch Hyne away, backhanded by Tom Holler, two and two.
- 1:10:23Donnie Smith at first base with a short lead.
- 1:10:25Mitch Hyne to left field, on the line, and a ball for a base hit.
- 1:10:34Lou has a strong run, goes it all the way in.
- 1:10:36Ball caught on the short hop by Tom Holler right near home.
- 1:10:40Throw a double for Joe Christopher.
- 1:10:43Joe has 12 doubles a year.
- 1:10:45Once again, the Mets have two baserunners.
- 1:10:47And for the second time in the game, in three innings,
- 1:10:49they have had baserunners at second and third.
- 1:10:52They have yet to get one across, and the batter this time will be
- 1:10:55Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:11:07Tom Holler talking it over with Bob Boland on the mound,
- 1:11:10now back behind home plate, getting set to send the signs out
- 1:11:14as they get ready for Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:11:16Johnny, betting 227, tried to run his way on his first time up.
- 1:11:21He's in front of the first pitch, right back to the pitches.
- 1:11:24Bob Boland puts the ball in play, and it's over to first base,
- 1:11:27hoping to pick up an out as the Giants claim Joe Christopher missed first,
- 1:11:32but the indication being that Joe touched it as Mel Steiner indicates
- 1:11:37the safe sign, and he cuts the bag.
- 1:11:42Now Boland, bringing the signs again.
- 1:11:46Into the windup, here's his pitch.
- 1:11:49Swung on and missed, strike one.
- 1:12:00Masadari Morikami warming up on the bullpen for the Giants,
- 1:12:03and that's threatening here with runners at second and third.
- 1:12:05The Giants lead five-nuckets.
- 1:12:08One strike delivery, swung on and missed, strike two.
- 1:12:11Bob Boland in a similar jam in the first, struck out, too.
- 1:12:17He also had runners at first and second and struck out one,
- 1:12:21picking himself out of two jams with strikeouts.
- 1:12:24His two-strike delivery.
- 1:12:27Fastball swung on and missed, strike three.
- 1:12:29So Boland reaches back and leaves two-on, striking out Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:12:34That strikeout is fifth in the ballgame,
- 1:12:36and all the strikeouts coming with runners on base.
- 1:12:39No runs, two hits, no errors, two left,
- 1:12:42and the score at the end of three to Johnny's five to miss nothing.
- 1:12:46Now you're going to hear a terribly sad song about a man who's unlucky in luck,
- 1:12:50but lucky in beer.
- 1:13:08From the little cafes of Romania comes the song about Eumenolet,
- 1:13:12who drinks to forget the fire that burns his heart because Marijuana doesn't love him.
- 1:13:23Even if you're not on fire like poor Yonelo Le,
- 1:13:26you can work up a passion of Romanian thirst with spicy salamale,
- 1:13:30and then you'll very likely call for the Reingold.
- 1:13:33It's a fact that in New York City, where there are more Romanians than in Bailesh,
- 1:13:38more people drink Reingold extra dry than any other beer.
- 1:13:42How come?
- 1:13:44Maybe you can find out at your local peewee test,
- 1:13:47but we must be doing something right.
- 1:13:56It's the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:13:58The Giants coming up as they lead five to nothing,
- 1:14:02and the first man up will be Tom Holler.
- 1:14:04On the mound for the Mets, and the leaf of Jack Fisher who is knocked out.
- 1:14:07In the top of the third is Gordon Richardson.
- 1:14:11And Gordon, a left-hander with his first pitch to the left-hand batter,
- 1:14:14and swung on for strike one.
- 1:14:16Holler batting 243 with 10 home runs and 34 runs batted in.
- 1:14:25Richardson pitching to his third man since coming in the game.
- 1:14:27He got his first two, and he misses low and away.
- 1:14:30One ball, one strike.
- 1:14:47Now the left-hander ready to work,
- 1:14:49and his next delivery is a curve that sweeps in for a golf strike two.
- 1:14:53One ball and two strikes.
- 1:15:04Holler will be followed by Howell O'Neer and Tito Fuente.
- 1:15:07And he checks on the swing.
- 1:15:09It's in time, and the curve breaks too low, and it's two balls and two strikes.
- 1:15:20Two and two, with no one out in the top of the fourth.
- 1:15:23Giants have five runs on five hits, but a big one by Willie Mays, scoring three.
- 1:15:27It went all the way.
- 1:15:29Two-two pitch, a curve hit down the first.
- 1:15:32Crane Poole digs it out, goes over to Richardson,
- 1:15:34covering it first basing time for the out.
- 1:15:39Now with one away, the second baseman, Howell O'Neer, will come up.
- 1:15:42Howell started off the five-run third with a blue double to right field.
- 1:15:46The ball was just a little check swing hit on a curve ball outside and dropped in
- 1:15:51just out of the reach of Ron Hunt, who tried to track it down from second base.
- 1:15:57After that, Fuente, beyond deck batter, beat out a bunt and moved O'Neer over to third.
- 1:16:03Bob Boland helped his guard with a two-strike base hit to center.
- 1:16:07First pitch, O'Neer hit deep to right field.
- 1:16:09A far run by Joe Critch, with the rim holding the ball up, he makes the catch.
- 1:16:16So on one pitch, the second out.
- 1:16:19Put in the record book, and it brings up the shortstop, Tito Fuente,
- 1:16:22who is scored when Ben Gaberson hit him to a fourth play in the third.
- 1:16:27Maddie Alou walked in that third to load up the bases.
- 1:16:34Gaberson got one in when he grounded out, leaving two on for Willie Mays,
- 1:16:38who hit his 41st overrun to make it a 5-0 game.
- 1:16:43Fuente, with his first hit in the series, a punt at last time, uptakes high, it's 4-1.
- 1:16:48He's batting 195, a right-hand batter.
- 1:16:52Boop.
- 1:16:55And Richardson with the sign and back again.
- 1:17:01And a swing of the miss, strike one.
- 1:17:06Fuente is a Cuban.
- 1:17:08He played at Tacoma the early part of this year, about at 3-11.
- 1:17:14He swings and misses again at strike two.
- 1:17:17One ball, two strikes.
- 1:17:26And Richardson at one-two.
- 1:17:28This is the swing on a miss, strike three,
- 1:17:30but Gordon takes the side away in order,
- 1:17:32picking up his second strike out since coming to the game.
- 1:17:35He now has retired five in a row since coming to the game and the score.
- 1:17:38At the end of three-and-a-half innings, the Giants five, and that's nothing.
- 1:17:43Now here's Lindsey Delfson with another unusual fact for the Viceroy Hall of Records.
- 1:17:48I've got a question for you.
- 1:17:50Know when the first night game was played?
- 1:17:52I was surprised it was so long ago.
- 1:17:55But the Viceroy Hall of Records gives the nod to a couple of amateur teams
- 1:17:58that played in Massachusetts the year 1880.
- 1:18:03Surprising, huh?
- 1:18:05But I'll tell you this, it's no surprise to see more and more smokers choosing Viceroy.
- 1:18:10It's because Viceroy has got the taste that's right.
- 1:18:13You see, Viceroy is specifically designed to taste the way you'd like a filter cigarette to taste.
- 1:18:18Viceroy is not too strong, like some brands,
- 1:18:21it tastes as if they didn't have a filter and not too light, like some others.
- 1:18:25You know the kind, they just don't seem to satisfy your taste.
- 1:18:28But when you light up a Viceroy,
- 1:18:30you get the filter cigarette that's not too strong, not too light.
- 1:18:34Viceroy's got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 1:18:38Viceroy's got the taste that's right,
- 1:18:41not too strong and not too light,
- 1:18:44Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 1:18:50And that's Batty now in the bottom half of the floor.
- 1:18:52The first man up will be Ron Svoboda.
- 1:18:54He'll be followed by Roy McMillan.
- 1:18:56And then the pitcher on the pitcher's position.
- 1:19:00They trail five to eight.
- 1:19:02On the mound with the five all eight is Bob Bullock.
- 1:19:05Bob has struck out five and has given up four base hits.
- 1:19:09He hits the first pitch in the right field, right there is Anderson.
- 1:19:13He makes an easy catch at the line drive.
- 1:19:15Anderson is a very good-looking outfield prospect.
- 1:19:19He plays in the field, right field and left.
- 1:19:22He made that catch just like he was willing to make.
- 1:19:25It was a hard shot to right.
- 1:19:27He just dodged it onto the ball and he put it away.
- 1:19:30It's all in one pitch.
- 1:19:31Ron Svoboda goes back to the bench.
- 1:19:33He had flied out to left field his first time up.
- 1:19:36And the batter will be Roy McMillan who's single to left field his first time up.
- 1:19:39Fifty-three, a right-hand batter.
- 1:19:45And he takes the first pitch for a called strike.
- 1:19:49One strike out of Roy McMillan.
- 1:19:52Roy three for seven against the Giants in this three-game series.
- 1:19:57One strike delivery is a high fast ball.
- 1:20:00This is inside and it's ball one.
- 1:20:03Woo!
- 1:20:05Woo!
- 1:20:09All the scoring in the game coming in the top of the third.
- 1:20:12The Giants scoring five as they send eight up.
- 1:20:15All five runs charged to Jack Fisher the starting pitcher.
- 1:20:19One-one pitch, a slider outside and low in its ball too.
- 1:20:24Two balls, one strike.
- 1:20:36And the next delivery has popped up.
- 1:20:38First baseman Len Gabelson and Alan Eyre the second baseman.
- 1:20:42Right there, Lan Eyre calls and he makes a catch.
- 1:20:46So two away in the bottom half.
- 1:20:48The fourth in the batter is Gordon Richardson.
- 1:20:58Gordon is all for four.
- 1:21:00He bats from the right-hand side.
- 1:21:01That's pretty good swing.
- 1:21:04Right here with a miss-spinning by five.
- 1:21:08Wes Westrom not wanting to use up any more pitching as he has five games coming up against Houston.
- 1:21:14We'll be telling you about that in a minute.
- 1:21:16First pitch is a called strike for strike one.
- 1:21:20Five games in three days.
- 1:21:26On top of that, Richardson has looked good.
- 1:21:28He has retired all five in his base.
- 1:21:30He takes high now and it's one ball, one strike.
- 1:21:34And the next pitch is a curveball, swung on and missed, strike two.
- 1:21:38One ball, two strikes.
- 1:21:46And Bowlin back again.
- 1:21:48Then the fastball is in, strike three.
- 1:21:50So Bob Bowlin strikes out a sixth man in the ball game, retiring the side in order.
- 1:21:54And the fastball is in, strike two.
- 1:21:56And the fastball is in, strike three.
- 1:21:58And the fastball is in, strike two.
- 1:22:00And Bowlin strikes out a sixth man in the ball game, retiring the side in order.
- 1:22:06And the score at the end of four, the Giants five, the Mets nothing.
- 1:22:10As we were mentioning, Wes Westrom has five games coming up starting Tuesday with a twilight doubleheader against the Houston Astros.
- 1:22:18He'll also play a doubleheader on Wednesday.
- 1:22:20That's an afternoon game starting at one o'clock.
- 1:22:22The twilighter starts at six.
- 1:22:24Then Thursday, the Mets close out the homestand with a two o'clock day game against the Astros.
- 1:22:29Scheduled pitchers for the Tuesday night game, Robin Roberts.
- 1:22:33Now back in the National League.
- 1:22:35He has had quite a start in the National League in his second childhood, so to speak.
- 1:22:40Won his first two games on four-hit shutouts.
- 1:22:44And along with Robin Roberts, it'll be Bob Bruce.
- 1:22:47So the Astros will have two right-handers.
- 1:22:49The Mets will counter with two left-handers, Tugnall and Larry Miller.
- 1:22:53Tug off with two big wins over the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dodgers.
- 1:22:57Tug defeating Sandy Kopacs.
- 1:22:59Last time out, that's no chore.
- 1:23:01And he can toss off lightly.
- 1:23:06So we're looking forward to five of the Astros starting Tuesday night.
- 1:23:10Hope you can be with us out here at Shea Stadium.
- 1:23:12If not, the games will be radio and television.
- 1:23:16In the National League, at the end of five-and-a-half innings, Philadelphia leading the Dodgers by a score of nine to one.
- 1:23:22The Dodgers finally scored in the top of the sixth on a homerun by Willie Davis.
- 1:23:27Boyd's still pitching for the Dodgers in place of Claude Osteen, the starting pitcher.
- 1:23:30Ray Kopp going so far all the way for the Phillies.
- 1:23:33Corrales, Alex Johnson, Bob Wine, Richie Allen, and Willie Davis, homeruns in the game.
- 1:23:40Right here, it's a 5-0 game with Bob Bullen, the batter against Gordon Richardson, Bob, a right-hand batter.
- 1:23:46And he takes the first pitch, hits strike one.
- 1:23:51And he even helped his cause in the five-run third when he singled on a two-strike count in the center field off Jack Fisher to keep the rally going.
- 1:23:58It drove in the first run of the game.
- 1:24:00Bullen now with three runs battered and hitting 152.
- 1:24:03He takes low and it's one ball, one strike.
- 1:24:13One ball, one strike.
- 1:24:15And the next deliver is hit in the air to shallow right center field.
- 1:24:19Rich for coming over.
- 1:24:21Johnny Lewis also there.
- 1:24:22And Johnny cuts across to make the catch.
- 1:24:26So they get Bob Bullen for the first out in the top of the fifth.
- 1:24:30Now with the Giants leading 5-0, the leadoff batter, Mattie Allou, will be coming up.
- 1:24:36At the end of seventh, a tie game, Baltimore 4, Washington 4, Larson pitching for the Oil's,
- 1:24:42Buster Nairm for the Senators.
- 1:24:44The end of three, Minnesota 1, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:24:47Morgan against Merritt.
- 1:24:49And also scheduled for the Yankees at Kansas City, Detroit and Los Angeles.
- 1:24:54Mattie Allou now the batter.
- 1:24:55He tries to burn it.
- 1:24:56It's in the air.
- 1:24:57And Rainbow will get to it.
- 1:24:58And he makes the catch.
- 1:24:59He's out there.
- 1:25:00Bullen Allou is the ball's done on a punt try.
- 1:25:04And now the second out in the top of the fifth.
- 1:25:07The first in the batter will be Len Gabelson.
- 1:25:20Gabelson has driven in the run even to a fourth play to score a second run for the Giants.
- 1:25:27And they scored five in the third.
- 1:25:28They lead five nothing.
- 1:25:30And he also walked in four pitches.
- 1:25:32He's batting an even 300 with his 0-1.
- 1:25:34And he bounces the first ball by Cookie Lavagetto for a foul ball, strike one.
- 1:25:39Have yourself a gala evening at Jones Beach this season.
- 1:25:42Enjoy a buffet dinner at the Marine Theater.
- 1:25:45Then see Mardi Gras, Kyle Ibargo's new musical extravaganza.
- 1:25:48It's the best ever at Jones Beach.
- 1:25:58One strike count on the left-hand batter.
- 1:26:00And he takes inside corner for a called strike two.
- 1:26:03Gabelson jumping away thinking he thinks he's inside.
- 1:26:06Still thinks he's inside as he talks back to the umpire, Stan Landis.
- 1:26:10Gabelson stands right on top of the plate.
- 1:26:13He's no more than a foot away.
- 1:26:15Now Gabelson ready to go and Gordon Richardson ready to go.
- 1:26:18The next pitch is swung on a missed strike three.
- 1:26:21So Gordon Richardson picks up his third strikeout in two and two-thirds innings.
- 1:26:28And he now has retired eight in the roll since coming in the ball game and the score.
- 1:26:32The end of four and a half, the Giants five to Metsnummey.
- 1:26:35Now coming in to do the play-by-play, Mr. Bob Murphy.
- 1:26:39But first here's a very sad French-Canadian song about a fellow who lost the key of his clarinet. Listen.
- 1:26:45J'ai perdu le dos de ma clarinet.
- 1:26:48J'ai perdu le dos de ma clarinet.
- 1:26:52Ah, qui m'a failli parer à moi.
- 1:26:55J'ai perdu le dos de ma clarinet is a song with the kind of humor French-Canadians love.
- 1:27:01But one song leads to another and the thirst that follows is no laughing matter.
- 1:27:06Ah, qui m'a failli parer à moi.
- 1:27:09J'ai perdu le dos de ma clarinet.
- 1:27:13Ah, qui m'a failli parer à moi.
- 1:27:16The kind of humor French-Canadians love.
- 1:27:18But one song leads to another and the thirst that follows is no laughing matter.
- 1:27:22Ah, qui m'a failli parer à moi.
- 1:27:25J'ai perdu le dos de ma clarinet.
- 1:27:29Ah, qui m'a failli parer à moi.
- 1:27:33Grand Saint-Picoult is what they'll sing as they reach for a beer.
- 1:27:37Probably Rheingold extra dry.
- 1:27:39In fact, in New York City, where there are more different kinds of people than in any other city in the world,
- 1:27:45more people drink Rheingold than any other beer.
- 1:27:48Why do French-Canadians like Rheingold? We don't know.
- 1:27:52But we must be doing something right.
- 1:27:55JE PEUS LE DOS DE MA CLARINE
- 1:28:15Is a song with the kind of humor French-Canadians love.
- 1:28:20But one song leads to another and the thirst that follows is no laughing matter.
- 1:28:23matter.
- 1:28:25Grande en piquant is what they'll sing as they reach for a beer, probably Rheingold extra
- 1:28:40dry. In fact, in New York City, where there are more different kinds of people than in
- 1:28:44any other city in the world, more people drink Rheingold than any other beer. Why do French
- 1:28:50people drink Rheingold? Well, Canadians like Rheingold, we don't know, but we must be doing
- 1:28:54something right.
- 1:28:56Now the last half of any number five, Ron Hunt will try and get something going for New
- 1:29:19York against hard-drawing Bob Bullock. And the curve is under the knees, one ball and
- 1:29:26no strikes. Ron has been hit by a pitch and struck out, nothing for one. Ron now starting
- 1:29:36that rhythmic staccato, hoping the mess can get it working. Just taking a high, two balls
- 1:29:41and no strikes. And the drive to high is ball three. Ron will be trying to wade him out
- 1:30:02and get on. That's thrilling by five, need a cluster of base runners. St. Louis got five
- 1:30:09runs on the third inning at Cincinnati, and the Cardinals now lead six-nothing after two
- 1:30:13and a half. Way inside, ball four. So Ron is on for the second half and three-fifths
- 1:30:21of the plate, it brings up Jenny Lewis. Outside and high, one ball and no strikes. Now the
- 1:30:40ball is rolling down, making a trip to the mat to talk to Bob Bullock.
- 1:30:55Round ball through the hole, a base pitcher on the right field. Other round ball, a base
- 1:31:23pitcher on the right field. Other round second will stop there. That's thrilling by five
- 1:31:28runs, they won't be taking chances on the baseline. So on the single to right by Jenny
- 1:31:33Lewis, the Mets, now have runners on first and second, nobody out. Eddie Greenbrew coming
- 1:31:38out. That was the fifth base of the game off by Bullock. Now the two of the company is
- 1:32:06kind of back to their
- 1:32:13two-糾 the rotation earlier, battered there, and when they hit the all pitchorganized
- 1:32:33Runners on first and third and nobody out.
- 1:32:41The Nuts have runners on first and third, nobody out.
- 1:32:44And Charlie Smith coming up.
- 1:32:57Charlie has been struck out and single event.
- 1:33:00One hit and two times at bat.
- 1:33:26Charlie has been struck out and single event.
- 1:33:29One hit and two times at bat.
- 1:33:51Bob Pollan will stay in.
- 1:33:53Now he has another time left with Tom Holler.
- 1:33:56Meanwhile the Giants both have Masanori and Murakami.
- 1:34:00And relief ace Frank Leslie are warming up.
- 1:34:11We'll take another check at all of the games from this tight Nashville-Aquinnah race at the end of the inning.
- 1:34:18Giants have the infield straight away looking for two.
- 1:34:22The outfield is dragged to left.
- 1:34:24Fast ball inside to Johnny Smith.
- 1:34:27One ball and no strikes.
- 1:34:29Charlie has been struck out and single to left field.
- 1:34:34Charlie is hitting 261. He's the top run producer on the ball club.
- 1:34:42Curve over the inside. One for a call strike.
- 1:34:45One ball and one strike.
- 1:35:02Wes Westrom is asking for time.
- 1:35:05And walking to home plate. He wants to talk to Charlie Smith.
- 1:35:14I think this has something to do with Charlie's left arm.
- 1:35:19You know he was hit above the elbow by a pitch throw by Stallard and Cardinal series.
- 1:35:24When he was first put back in the lineup he was put back against the obituaries who were not flame-growers.
- 1:35:29Because he couldn't get the bat around as fast as normal.
- 1:35:32He hit the ground ball to third. Heartthroats the second they have one.
- 1:35:35That's all they can get. Hit the store as Johnny Lewis.
- 1:35:38Well he did get around on that fast ball and hit it hard on the ground down to third.
- 1:35:43Now it's 5-2. A run batted in for Charlie Smith on the ground ball to third.
- 1:35:48It's 56 to run batted in.
- 1:35:51Charlie Smith on first. One man out. Joe Christopher the batter.
- 1:36:04And the miss of this goal in the heart in the spinning.
- 1:36:08Now the pitch to Christopher. A check swing slow roller down the third base line.
- 1:36:12Hits up by a goal and the peg is in the hand at first base.
- 1:36:16Throw to Lynn Gabrielson. Just got there and it nicked Joe Christopher.
- 1:36:20Charlie Smith with it over to second.
- 1:36:22Christopher didn't mean to hit that when he checked his swing.
- 1:36:25Hit a slow roller down the line going toward third.
- 1:36:32Now there are two away and Charlie Smith is on second base.
- 1:36:41Johnny Stevenson has tried to bunny's way on and been thrown out.
- 1:36:44And been struck out. No hits in two times at bat.
- 1:36:47Johnny hitting 224. He's a left hand batter.
- 1:36:53Bolan's pitch on the way. Curve outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:36:59Bolan delivers to Stevenson and he pops it high into the air.
- 1:37:18A foul ball back toward the crowd. And it's out of play.
- 1:37:49Now the 1-1 pitch. A fast ball and a tie. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:38:01Giants scored their five runs in the third inning.
- 1:38:05Curve ball high. Three and one. Rounds for Bota waiting on deck.
- 1:38:11Big blow for the Giants with the three run homer by Willie May.
- 1:38:23Three-one delivery. Inside and high. Ball four.
- 1:38:27Winners on first and second. Two down. Rounds for Bota is coming up.
- 1:38:33Brown has slid to left and lined the ball hard to the right fielder Henderson.
- 1:38:45And now on signal, Sam Haller is going to the mat to talk to Bob Bolan.
- 1:38:53Herman Frank standing on the dugout floor near the front corner of the dugout flanked on one side by Cookie Lavagento and on the other by Charlie Fox.
- 1:39:12And they all fully realize that rounds for Bota is the kind of hitter you have to be careful with.
- 1:39:17A high pop fly with a short left field. The winner is the shortstop, those backhand comes out of Alou and Alou takes it for the out.
- 1:39:25The bat is retired. New York scoring two runs. On two hits, no errors, two left on.
- 1:39:36Now five innings complete as the Giants five runs, five hits with no errors.
- 1:39:41The New York Mets two runs, six hits and no errors.
- 1:39:45A day off tomorrow and a twin mill Tuesday evening against the Astros starting at 6 p.m.
- 1:39:52Bob Bruce and Robin Roberts pitching for Houston, Tug McGraw and Larry Miller for the New York Mets.
- 1:39:59At County Mac Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies lead the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-3 at the end of six and a half innings.
- 1:40:08Osteen, Will Hyde, Reed and Kekich have pitched for the Dodgers, Kelk for the Phillies. Corallies, Johnson, Wyon and Allen have homered for Philadelphia, Willie Davis for the Dodgers.
- 1:40:18Houston 2, Pittsburgh 1 after four and a half, not a part against Friend.
- 1:40:23Chicago 2, Milwaukee nothing after four and a half, Bill Fahl against Hank Fisher.
- 1:40:28St. Louis had a five run third to route Sammy Ellis.
- 1:40:33St. Louis 6, Cincinnati nothing at the end of two and a half, they had Sedeckia in the mound.
- 1:40:38Yankees play in Kansas City this afternoon.
- 1:40:41White Sox are leading the Red Sox two to nothing after four in the first game of a doubleheader, Mount Bukette against Howard.
- 1:40:48Last of the ninth inning in Washington with the ball game between the Orioles and Senators tied four to four.
- 1:40:55Larson and Relief of Pappas narrowing pitching for Washington.
- 1:40:58Minnesota leading Cleveland one to nothing after three and a half, Steve Hargett against Jim Merritt.
- 1:41:03Detroit at Los Angeles later today.
- 1:41:07Now we have a new pitcher in the game for the New York Mets, Bob Moorehead takes over the pitching.
- 1:41:14As we go to the sixth inning and Willie Mays will be leading off with the Giants.
- 1:41:19Gordon Richardson turning in a flawless job in Relief.
- 1:41:24Richardson faced eight men while in Relief and retired only.
- 1:41:37Gordon Richardson in two and two-thirds innings allowed no runs, no hits. He walked nine and he struck out three.
- 1:41:56Willie Mays has singled his center and vaulted a three-run homer.
- 1:42:01The homerun, a record-breaking moment, is 17th during the month of August. 494 in his career.
- 1:42:09He stands alone now, number five in the all-time homerun derby.
- 1:42:28Curve ball, swung and missed, rank one.
- 1:42:34Tremendous year for Willie Mays. Willie has hit 41 homeruns and knocked 89 runs in.
- 1:42:42Moorehead winds down against the pitch. The knuckleball is swung and missed and the count strikes two.
- 1:43:00We're in the sixth inning, Giants five and the Mets two. And it's over on the outside corner, bank three.
- 1:43:13Bob Moorehead making his first appearance and joining the ball club from Williamsburg. Bob has won none and lost one.
- 1:43:22Alken Henderson, who went to right field in the last half of the third inning, he's up for the first time.
- 1:43:32One ball and now strikes.
- 1:43:40A fly ball hit deep to center, drifting back is Johnny Lewis. He's under it, taps the glove and puts it away.
- 1:43:54Two outs, nobody on in the top of the sixth inning and the batter now is Jim Ray Hart.
- 1:44:06Third baseman Jim Ray Hart has fly deep to center and fly to right, no hits and two times up.
- 1:44:12Batting at 296. He's a right hand hitter with good power, he has 16 homeruns.
- 1:44:19Curve, low and away, one ball, no strikes.
- 1:44:34Wild pitch, not officially with nobody on but it's failed all the way to the backstop, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:44:50Bob Haller kneeling in the on deck circle, now Mooreheads 2-0 delivery. Breaking ball inside and he falls behind on Jim Hart, three balls and no strikes.
- 1:45:02If the Mets can pull this one out, they will win six games this year from the Giants, the same number they won from the Dodgers.
- 1:45:08Ball four and Jim Hart walks on four pitches.
- 1:45:17Tom Haller will be coming up, Haller has popped a short, drafted out to Eddie Cranepool. Haller 0-2.
- 1:45:31Tom is batting 242 with 10 homeruns and 34 runs batted out.
- 1:45:43Now Mooreheads, so a breaking ball gets away from Johnny Stevenson and hit off the shin guard at Stan Landis.
- 1:45:48So going on to second base goes Jim Hart. Nothing ball by Bob Mooreheads. This will be a fastball charge to Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:46:00Now Bob eyes the runner at second, here's his pitch on the way. Down in the dirt, a good stop by Johnny Stevenson, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:46:21Mooreheads drives the knuckleball and it's over for a strike, two and one.
- 1:46:35Al Lanier is in the on deck circle. Pitching two and one. Low in the dirt, bounds away and moving on to third goes Jim Hart.
- 1:46:49That ball carries to Johnny Stevenson, that was down in the dirt though.
- 1:46:57So a hard and dry walk has now gone around to third on a couple of fastballs.
- 1:47:01That last knuckleball hit the dirt in front of the plate. Normally those are scored a wild pitch.
- 1:47:09Three and one on Tom Haller. Moorehead out of his windup, here's the pitch. It's two high ball, four and Haller goes to first.
- 1:47:28Al Lanier started off the five run inning back in the third with a fly ball, one blown double down the right field line.
- 1:47:36Moved over to third on a bun single by Tito Fuentes. Bob Bolin behind on the cap, then singled up the middle driving in the first run.
- 1:47:46Then Gabriel Sinsgrouter drove in the second run and Willie Mays in a three run homer to make it five nothing in favor of the Giants.
- 1:47:57That's got two runs in their half of the fifth inning so it's five to two. The Giants are batting here in the sixth inning. Runners on first and third in two outs.
- 1:48:08It's down to Al Lanier, it's down to the knees for a call strike.
- 1:48:24Ground ball hammered down to third, fielded by Charlie Smith. He begs to Ron Hunt and they have the force play to side it up.
- 1:48:33For the Giants in the sixth, no runs, no hits, no errors and two left. At the end of five and a half, the score, Giants five and the Mets two.
- 1:48:54Last of the sixth inning, Roy McSmillen will be up against Bob Bolin. Mack has singled to left and been retired on a pop fly to second, one for two.
- 1:49:06This will get warm up action in their bullpen. Bob Moorhead is scheduled up next. Fast ball, two high, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:49:19A lot of great looking batters brought here today by the Mets young following.
- 1:49:30A fly ball in high in the air to shallow left center. Mattie Allou comes down to begin and makes the catch.
- 1:49:40One away, nobody on it. Now Chuck Yiller will bat for Bob Moorhead.
- 1:50:01The bait attendance this afternoon is 46,33. A marvelous crowd. A total attendance 47,170.
- 1:50:16Line drive in the air to the right, in comes Henderson, he picks it off shoulder high.
- 1:50:21Yiller hitting the first pitch, lines to Henderson and Wright. The three days with the Giants have drawn 150,347.
- 1:50:40Saw the seven day period with the Dodgers and the Giants coming into New York. Attracted almost 300,299,145.
- 1:51:04Ron Hunt batting at the top of the order as Bob Bullen winds and pitches and the curve is a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:51:21Now the pitcher on the way and it's popped up, he hit him off the first with a good pitch.
- 1:51:27Gabriel's in the first base but near the bag in fair territory, takes it for the eye. Bullen coming back with a strong inning.
- 1:51:34No runs, no hits, no errors, none left. Now six innings complete. The Giants five and the New York Mets two.
- 1:51:42It's hard to imagine New York City without every kind of jazz from Dixieland to progressive.
- 1:51:47Unfortunately you don't have to listen.
- 1:51:59That's Backstreet Rag, a uniquely American sound. It came up to Mississippi out of New Orleans with the Negro Jazzmen who played it to the world.
- 1:52:08But they didn't stop with Dixieland and the blues.
- 1:52:19Little David's View by John Lewis is a new sound that's part of a new generation.
- 1:52:24But whether it's the old jazz or the new, it's thirsty work for the musicians.
- 1:52:29And when they put down their instruments, they'll pick up a cold beer, often wringled extra dry.
- 1:52:34In fact, in New York City, where there are more kinds of jazz than in any other city in the world, more people drink Reingold than any other beer.
- 1:52:43Why do so many people like Reingold? We don't know, but we must be doing something right.
- 1:52:59Dave Eyers is on the pitch now for the New York Mets, and before we go to the seventh inning, we'll pause for station identification.
- 1:53:06This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 1:53:10You're tuned to wait 10 on the radio dial. WGY is connected. Your station for Mets baseball in the northeast.
- 1:53:18Bob Murphy with Ralph Kainter and Lindsay Nelson from Shea Stadium.
- 1:53:22Dave Eyers now on the pitch for New York as the game goes to the southern.
- 1:53:26Hido Pouwines, the shortstop, hitting eighth in the order, will be leading off.
- 1:53:30Third ball game for Dave since he joined the Mets. His first two appearances, he has chalked up a save and a win, relieving against the Cardinals and the Dodgers.
- 1:53:46Hido Pouwines has a bunch single and has been struck out one hit and two times up.
- 1:53:53Dave, a right-hander, a sinkerball pitcher, a high fly, hits deep to left by Pouwines, back to Swabota, near the bullpen, he reaches and makes the catch.
- 1:54:12Brown Swabota was flat up against the screen in front of the bullpen fence, reached over his head and made a one-hand grab of that drive hit by Hido Pouwines.
- 1:54:25Ballpark was just the right size to hold that one.
- 1:54:32Big Schofield is coming out. Schofield is trying to hit for it by a bullpen. So Herman Franks making a move here.
- 1:54:45Not taking any chances on Bullens firing, although Bullens came back strong for an impressive six-bunning.
- 1:54:51Outside and high, one ball and no strikes on Big Schofield.
- 1:55:07Now high as Wines, the pitch, breaking ball over, a strike, one ball and one strike.
- 1:55:18The Sonora, Amirah Cami and Frank Lindsay are the pitchers getting ready in the giant bullpen.
- 1:55:24Ground ball raked a second round hunt in front of it, Dixon out of the dirt, juggles and throws, he got him by running strides.
- 1:55:34Now two outs and nobody on, time of the seventh, the leadoff batter, Mattie Allou, comes up for the fourth time.
- 1:55:40Mattie has fouled out to Johnny Stevenson, reached on a walk and fouled out the crane bull for hanging to bucks.
- 1:55:57Ground ball and no strikes.
- 1:56:10Looping fly ball in the left field, Rav Swaboda is in the stride, he's under it and he takes it to side his up.
- 1:56:16Dave Ehlers gets the chance quickly in the top of the seventh.
- 1:56:19No runs, no hits, no errors, none left. Seven minutes stretch time at the end of six and a half to score, Giants five and the Mets two.
- 1:56:28Now it's time for another unusual fact from the Vance Roy Hall of Records.
- 1:56:33Today's story could be called a batter's nightmare.
- 1:56:37When Frank Chance was playing for Chicago he reached base five times in one ball game.
- 1:56:42But Frank wasn't doing the hitting, he was hit with five pitch balls.
- 1:56:46Ouch. Now let's turn to a more pleasant stuff, you can talk about Vice Roy.
- 1:56:51Vice Roy's got the taste that's right. You know why?
- 1:56:54Because Vice Roy is specifically designed to taste the way you'd like a filter cigarette to taste.
- 1:57:00Not too strong like some brands that taste if they didn't have a filter.
- 1:57:04And not too light like some others. You know the kind.
- 1:57:08They just don't seem to satisfy your taste.
- 1:57:10But when you light up a Vice Roy you get the filter cigarette that's not too strong, not too light.
- 1:57:16Vice Roy's got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 1:57:20Vice Roy's got the taste that's right. Not too strong and not too light.
- 1:57:26The taste that's right.
- 1:57:29The taste that's right.
- 1:57:38Masanori and Yurakami is the new pitcher for San Francisco.
- 1:57:42It's been that seven minutes, half of the seven minutes.
- 1:57:45For Masanori in the 34th ball game this year.
- 1:57:49He's had a pretty good year in relief.
- 1:57:51Yurakami has won three and lost only one.
- 1:57:55Every appearance for Masanori has been in relief with one exception.
- 1:57:59He started one ball game on Masanori and Yurakami day at Candlestick Park.
- 1:58:05A ball game he started against San Francisco.
- 1:58:08That game by the way against Philadelphia.
- 1:58:10A ball game by the way wound up 15 to 9.
- 1:58:26Let's have our left hand hitters coming up.
- 1:58:30Johnny Lewis and Ed Crane pool and so on.
- 1:58:32And Franks comes in with Masanori and Yurakami.
- 1:58:35He's a curveball stylist but he gets the ball over.
- 1:58:40Breaking ball on the outside corner, strike one goal.
- 1:58:44Johnny Lewis single his last time up to help build a run.
- 1:58:47Johnny has one hit and three drips.
- 1:58:50Jim Hart plays him in close at third.
- 1:58:53But when he shades towards second.
- 1:58:55And it's popped up on the left side of the diamond.
- 1:58:58Hart drifting back behind third in fair territory.
- 1:59:01He has it for the off.
- 1:59:05One out and nobody on.
- 1:59:06Ed Crane pool will be hitting.
- 1:59:07Eddie has a double and a single and three times up.
- 1:59:13Eddie now has hiked his batting average on his home stand to 268.
- 1:59:26Pittsburgh has now gone out in front of the Houston Astros.
- 1:59:29They're being behind in the early part of the ball game.
- 1:59:33On the outside corner, strike one goal to Eddie Crane pool.
- 1:59:52Have a pitcher on the way.
- 1:59:53And it gets the outside corner, a breaking ball to Crane pool, a two strike count.
- 1:59:58The Giants are out in front on the strength of a three run homer by Willie Mays back in the third inning.
- 2:00:04They lead five to two.
- 2:00:15Swing and a miss, he's struggling out.
- 2:00:18Two up and two cast aside by Masanori Murakami.
- 2:00:25Charlie Smith has struck out single to left and restart a force play.
- 2:00:31He reached on the force play on the fifth inning, he knocked in a run.
- 2:00:39Eddie Crane pool and Charlie Smith have been credited with the two RBIs for New York.
- 2:00:48Murakami over the head, the pitch to Charlie Smith, a swing and a miss on a curve in the cast rank one.
- 2:00:59Watching Murakami work, he saves the pitch with a minimum of effort.
- 2:01:04Now he goes to his fastball that's inside, one ball and one strike.
- 2:01:13The Giants will not have Murakami next year, Masi will stay and play baseball in Tokyo.
- 2:01:21Pitching one and one, low and outside, two balls and a strike.
- 2:01:37He had quite a hassle over Murakami before the season started.
- 2:01:41He's inside, ball three, three and one.
- 2:01:45A lot of cable grams were sent back and forth before they finally decided.
- 2:01:51Murakami would honor his contract with the Giants instead of remaining in Tokyo to play,
- 2:01:55where as you can imagine, he is their top baseball celebrity.
- 2:02:02Three-one delivery.
- 2:02:04Foul pop-up, no play, this is back beyond the screen and to the ground.
- 2:02:19A swing and a miss, Murakami struck him out.
- 2:02:22Murakami comes in to get the side in order, the Mets unable to get the ball out of the infield.
- 2:02:27No runs, no hits, no errors and none left.
- 2:02:30Seven innings complete, the Giants five runs, five hits, no errors.

- 2:03:52St. Louis 10-4 at the end of five.
- 2:03:55Right here we go to the eighth inning and Len Gabrielson is the leadoff batter against Dave Isler.
- 2:04:02Pitch is inside, one ball and no strikes.
- 2:04:05In the American League it will be the Yankees and Kansas City, it will be Al Downing against Luke Krause.
- 2:04:10The Red Sox and the White Sox are tied two to two at the end of six in the first game of a double header.
- 2:04:15Baltimore and Washington are tied four-four at the end of 11-0.
- 2:04:20Ground ball toward the hole, Hunt can't run it down, it goes into right field for a base hit.
- 2:04:27Minnesota one grave with nothing after four and a half, Steve Harden against Jim Mertz.
- 2:04:31And Detroit plays at L.A.
- 2:04:33Now, the Electricity going through the crowd, Marks and the presence of Willie Mays has to hit it.
- 2:04:49The Dodgers are out in front, the Giants, I beg your pardon, are out in front on the strength of the free run hummer hit by Willie Mays back in the third inning.
- 2:04:58Powering pop-up outside first in the foul territory, Crane Bull drifting over by the dugout, makes the catch.
- 2:05:07One out and one on.
- 2:05:11Well, it's hard to really say who's the biggest attraction in New York, the Dodgers or the Giants.
- 2:05:17In eight dates at Shea Stadium with the Dodgers this year, the Mets drew 340,758.
- 2:05:24In eight dates against the Giants this year at Shea Stadium, 336,278.
- 2:05:31Just about a standoff, the Dodgers and Giants combined to attract playing the Mets, 677,000.
- 2:05:45Outside and lower on Ken Henderson, one ball and no strikes.
- 2:05:57Dave Ehner is looking in for his sign.

- 2:07:30Gabrielson down the line to score, Christopher fits the ball up.
- 2:07:34And the runners wind up on second and third, Hart the batter on second and Ken Henderson on third.
- 2:07:40It's going to go as a two-base hit.

- 2:07:49The second base hit for Jim Hart at a run by the end is 69th RBI.
- 2:07:55Giants now take a 6-2 lead.
- 2:08:10Now the intentional walk will be given to Tom Haller, the left-hand batter with first base open.
- 2:08:16The right-hander Hal Lanier is on deck.
- 2:08:21Ball two is served outside intentionally by Dave Ehlers.
- 2:08:34Hal Lanier waiting to bat next.

- 2:08:39He got a windblown double down the right field line to start off a five-run inning back in the third.
- 2:08:44The third goes down to first on the intentional pass.
- 2:08:48Well, fans remember Viceroy's not too strong, not too light.
- 2:08:53Viceroy's got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 2:09:00Lanier hitting a 2-33, a rangy right-hand hitter.
- 2:09:05Now others out of his wind up, the bits ground ball it toward the hole.
- 2:09:09Grabbed by McMillan, the throw to second, low throw goes into the outfield, one run is in.
- 2:09:14Now digging for the play that Jim Hart helped him in to score.
- 2:09:17Power goes to third and Lanier all the way to second base.
- 2:09:23That was a slow bouncer hit toward the hole.
- 2:09:25McMillan made a good play in reaching the ball.
- 2:09:28But his off-bounce throw was a low throw.
- 2:09:30It was in the dirt.
- 2:09:31It skipped into the outfield.
- 2:09:32So score it, a base hit for Hal Lanier of the infield variety.
- 2:09:37A base hit brought home Ken Henderson.
- 2:09:41And the second run, Jim Hart, comes in to score on a throwing error charged to Roy McMillan.

- 2:11:11Palinnius didn't mean to hit the ball, he was trying to defend himself and get out of the way.
- 2:11:15But as he swung the batter around, getting out of the way, it ticked his fat handle and was held on to by Johnny Stevenson.
- 2:11:22The jerk from Monsignori, Murakami.
- 2:11:26Murakami coming up.
- 2:11:47Monsignori left hand batter, the infield dropping back now with two men down.

- 2:12:26Ground ball hit down to third.
- 2:12:27Johnny Smith straightens up, throws to Crane Bull, the Giants are out after scoring three at the eighth inning.

- 2:13:05This song gets sung over and over at Irish parties and picnics until the singers raise a ferocious thirst.
- 2:13:13Then they change their tune.
- 2:13:22Are more Irish than in the whole of Dublin.
- 2:13:25More people drink Reingold than any other beer.
- 2:13:29Why do Irish Americans like Reingold?
- 2:13:31We don't know, but we must be doing something right.
