- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Today we're continuing our series on upgrading or moving your office.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We've talked about pricing, one of the most important factors in deciding whether to get an outside office.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: However, today's topic can also be a make or break factor.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: We're talking about the location of your office.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And as they say in real estate, it's all about location, location, location.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Let's think about location from two angles.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: The first angle is for those of you considering getting an outside office.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Now, obviously, the neighborhood of the office is a factor, but mostly I want you to think about the distance from your home.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: How far are you willing to commute to a new office?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Now, for years, I drove 25 minutes each way to the college where I used to teach.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And that to me was a perfect distance because I could listen to almost an hour of podcasts every day, or I could also dictate a bunch of writing on my way to or from the college.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Now, your mileage might vary, but for renting an office, you need to decide how far you're willing to drive.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And knowing this ahead of time helps narrow down your options.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: My current office is literally just a two-minute drive from my home, and I'm really glad that I held up for something that's ultra convenient.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Now let's think about a second angle, which is for those of you who are working from home and who are going to stay working from home.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Location can be a factor for you too.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: My home office started in a spare bedroom upstairs in our house, and then as my son got older, he wanted a bigger room, so we actually switched rooms.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And in the last year, I seriously considered building an office in our basement just to have more of a separation between work and home life.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And I may still do that at some point in the future if I decide to work from home again sometime.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now, maybe you don't have an extra bedroom for an office in your house.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Even if you currently just write at the kitchen table, is there any other space in your home that you could use for a writing area?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Could you convert a little nook somewhere?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Could you set up an area in your garage or your basement?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Honestly, you always have some options for creating a writing area that is better than what you currently have right now.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And I think it's also worth remembering that many famous writers have only worked with a typewriter or computer and a random desk somewhere.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, all you really need is something to write and something to write with.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: But if you can support your writing with a better location, then so much the better.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Think about where you currently write.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Is there a better location either in a separate office away from your home or by improving or switching locations within your home?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
