- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. RCMP sees suspected cocaine and contraband tobacco
- 0:10Speaker 1: following the search of a vehicle recently in Harbor, Maine.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Mahalia Erdis reports.
- 0:15Speaker 2: The vehicle was pulled over on Harbor Drive just before
- 0:19Speaker 2: 8 o'clock last Tuesday night. Five people, four men and
- 0:22Speaker 2: one woman, were arrested after officers observed unstamped tobacco in
- 0:26Speaker 2: the vehicle. A further search also turned up a quantity
- 0:29Speaker 2: of suspected cocaine, items consistent with drug trafficking, and open alcohol.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Police allege that one passenger, 38-year-old Kayla Marie Owens, was
- 0:38Speaker 2: in possession of suspected cocaine and other items and failed
- 0:41Speaker 2: to comply with their commands. She has been charged with
- 0:45Speaker 2: resisting or obstructing an officer and failing to comply with
- 0:48Speaker 2: her probation. She appeared in court on Friday. According to RCMP,
- 0:52Speaker 2: the driver of the vehicle, a 44-year-old Seelcove man, was
- 0:55Speaker 2: driving with a suspended license. He received another suspension and
- 0:59Speaker 2: the vehicle was impounded. The investigation continues with more charges possible.
- 1:05Speaker 1: The mayor of Mount Pearl says it's so far so
- 1:08Speaker 1: good as it relates to a couple of changes in
- 1:10Speaker 1: traffic flow implemented last week. The city made a few
- 1:13Speaker 1: tweaks to the intersection at Commonwealth Park and Ruth Avenues
- 1:17Speaker 1: in hopes of improving traffic flow and safety for those
- 1:20Speaker 1: on foot and wheels. Mayor Dave Aker says it's early days,
- 1:24Speaker 1: especially given the fact that the school year has yet
- 1:27Speaker 1: to start, but so far everyone's adjusting well. The city
- 1:31Speaker 1: has also added a crosswalk and a median at the
- 1:33Speaker 1: trailway on Commonwealth. Aker says a set of lights have
- 1:36Speaker 1: been installed with more safety features to be in place
- 1:39Speaker 1: in the coming weeks.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We're going to have radar technology installed near the end
- 1:44Speaker 3: of this month. And what that will do is coordinate
- 1:47Speaker 3: between those three intersections I just mentioned, all on Commonwealth
- 1:51Speaker 3: at the trailway or at Park Roof or at Tops
- 1:55Speaker 3: of Road. And what they'll do is they'll talk to
- 1:57Speaker 3: each other. So when a pedestrian or a cyclist comes
- 2:00Speaker 3: by and hits that new trailway intersection, they'll be able
- 2:05Speaker 3: to press a button and get free access, not necessarily immediately.
- 2:09Speaker 3: The red light for the traffic may not engage right away.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It will depend on what the traffic pressures are.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Social media was abuzz with photos last night following reports
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the formation of a potential funnel cloud over the
- 2:23Speaker 1: metro region. Some weather specialists shared the photos to social media,
- 2:27Speaker 1: debunking it as being a shelf cloud rather than a
- 2:30Speaker 1: funnel cloud. Environment Canada meteorologist David Neal says it appears
- 2:35Speaker 1: as though the cloud formation was associated with an area
- 2:38Speaker 1: of showers that was moving through.
- 2:39Speaker 4: This particular case, it was probably having to do a
- 2:42Speaker 4: little bit with air ahead that was relatively warm and
- 2:46Speaker 4: then the air aloft was relatively cold. So what happens
- 2:49Speaker 4: there is that they basically come out kind of beneath
- 2:53Speaker 4: the area of showers. So this was likely what happened
- 2:58Speaker 4: here to form that bit of.
- 3:01Speaker 4: That particular cloud formation in this particular case. So, yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 4: when you see it there, you see them a lot,
- 3:08Speaker 4: it kind of, you know, it does look rather ominous.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
