- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Giles, Abbot, September 1 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. Saint Giles, born at Athens, distributed all his patrimony to the poor and followed Jesus. Several miracles having made him celebrated, he fled to province to get away from honors.
- 0:43He lived in prayer and meditation in the depths of a vast forest with no other food but of roots and the milk of a tame hind. One day when pursued by the hounds of king Theodoric, the animal took refuge in the grotto of the saint who, while trying to protect her, had his hand pierced by an arrow. The king on his arrival urgently begged the saint to consent to the building of a monastery on the spot. The holy hermit undertook its government and like Moses among the people of God, he became the chief and lawgiver of a numerous monastic family which followed his leadership, his doctrine, and his councils. The Abbey Of Saint Giles, a marvel of architecture, became one of the most frequented resorts of pilgrims in the Middle Ages and a town sprung up there.
- 1:49The counts of Toulouse regarded it as an honor to bear this saint's name. The ancient Missals placed him among the 14 auxiliary saints. He was invoked in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and England where 146 churches were built in his honor. St. Giles died in the sixth century.
- 2:24In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels.
- 2:42The law of God rules in his heart. Allay thy impatience with the wicked. Envy not the lot of evildoers. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 3:07Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels. The law of God rules in his heart. The Collect, let us pray. May the intercession of the blessed Abbot Giles, we beseech Thee, O Lord, commend us unto thee that what we may not have through our own merits, we may gain through his patronage.
- 3:42A commemoration of the 12 holy brothers. Be it ours, o Lord, to rejoice in the triumph of the holy brethren, thy martyrs. To our faith, may their victory win an increase of virtues. And may we be comforted by the knowledge that it has added so many saints to the number of our advocates through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:22A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. Well loved by God, well loved among men, a benediction rests upon his memory. The Lord gave him such honor as he gives to his holy ones, gave him renown by striking terror into his enemies. And then at his word abated the prodigies that had befallen them. He made him great in the eyes of kings, entrusted commandments to him in full view of the chosen people, made a revelation to him of the divine glory.
- 5:05The Lord set him apart, chosen out from the rest of mankind. So loyal he was and so gentle answered his prayer by taking him up in a cloud and there face to face imparting commandments to him, the law that gives life and wisdom. The gradual. Lord, with abundant blessings thou hast met him on his way, hast set a jeweled crown upon his head. He prayed for life, and thou hast granted him life unfailing till the end of time.
- 5:50Alleluia. Alleluia. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon. Alleluia.
- 6:08A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, Peter said to Jesus, and what of us who have forsaken all and followed thee? What is left for us? Jesus said to them, I promise you in the new birth when the son of man sits on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit there on 12 thrones. You who have followed me and shall be judges over the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 6:44And every man that has forsaken home or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my name's sake shall receive his reward a hundredfold and obtain everlasting life. The offertory. Never a wish in his heart, O Lord, hast thou disappointed. Never a prayer on his lips denied. Thou hast set a jeweled crown on his head.
- 7:27The secret. May thy holy Abbot, Giles, we beseech thee, O Lord, obtain that the victims placed upon thy holy altar may profit us unto salvation. A commemoration of the 12 holy brothers In honor of thy holy martyrs, may we, oh Lord, devoutly celebrate thy mysteries. May our doing so be to us each time a new joy and a sure defense through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 8:20The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 8:54We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 9:25Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He was a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 9:52May the blessed Abbot Giles by his intercession and the reception of thy sacrament protect us, O Lord, that we may put into practice the virtues of his life and experience the help of his intercession. A commemoration of the 12 holy brothers. O Almighty God, to us who in memory of thy martyrs have received thy sacraments, vouch safe we beseech thee, the grace by emulating their faith to advance in holiness through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 10:56Amen. Saint Giles, pray for us. The 12 holy brothers, pray for us.
