- Adam Rutz: One of the biggest things holding people back from reaching their full potential is not a lack of ability. It's the fear of what other people might think while they're trying to improve. See, as human beings, we care a lot about how we're perceived. We don't want to look inexperienced. We don't want to make mistakes in front of other people. And we certainly don't want to look like we don't know what we're doing. But here's something you gotta understand. If you want to turn a weakness into a strength, You've got to be willing to look bad before you get good. One of my favorite quotes is, first, you look like an idiot to everyone else while you're trying to figure it out. Then everyone else looks like idiots for doubting that you would. Think about a baseball pitcher who throws a great fastball but doesn't really have any off-speed pitches. If you try and teach that pitcher how to throw a changeup, when that pitcher first starts developing the changeup, it's probably not going to be very good. Right? They're probably not going to throw it for strikes. Probably going to spike a lot of pitches in the dirt, maybe leave some up in the zone. But what if that pitcher avoids throwing the change up because they're afraid of how bad it looks? They're never going to develop it. Instead, they got to commit to the process. They throw it in their flat grounds and their bullpen sessions, make adjustments, get feedback, continue putting in the reps. And over time, what started as a weakness has the potential to become one of their greatest strengths. That same principle applies to your career, your relationships, and every area of personal development. You can't expect to become great at something that you're unwilling to be bad at first. So here's my challenge for you today. Identify one skill that you've been avoiding because you're afraid of looking inexperienced or making mistakes. And then get to work on it. Go get the reps in. Ask for feedback. Give yourself permission to be a beginner. Because growth doesn't happen when you're constantly trying to protect your image. It happens when you're willing to challenge your current abilities. Remember, you've got to be willing to look bad today if you wanna give yourself a chance to become great tomorrow. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
