- 0:00I had lost everything that was dear to me, my, my career, my
- 0:03family, my dignity and self respect.
- 0:06And I ended up in the treatment center thinking that my life was
- 0:10over. And you know, by the grace of
- 0:13God, I, I, I was asked to about a year after I left and I stayed
- 0:18in West TX for a while in transitional housing and I was
- 0:24asked to come to work for the treatment center that I had
- 0:29gotten help at. All right.
- 0:31Welcome back everybody to another episode of Finding New
- 0:33Waters. My name is Bea Reeves.
- 0:34I'm the Director of Business Development here at New Waters
- 0:37Recovery in Raleigh, sitting here with our CEO, Justin
- 0:39McClendon. Special guest today, Rick
- 0:42Hubbard down in Fort Worth with Constellations Behavioral
- 0:45Health. Welcome, Rick.
- 0:47Thank you for having me, it's good to see your face.
- 0:51It's good to see your face. Yeah.
- 0:54So, Rick, I will ask you in a minute just kind of what you do.
- 0:58But I know that you've been in our field for a while and one of
- 1:01the most respected people and been around.
- 1:03And will you just give us a little bit of a, you know,
- 1:07chronology of how you got into the field and where you been and
- 1:12what you do now, I guess is the best way to ask it in one big
- 1:15chunk. Wow, a long story and I'm not
- 1:18sure we have enough time to tell the whole story, but I'll give
- 1:20you the short version. So I I previously worked in the
- 1:26retail banking business and I did that for many years,
- 1:30originally started in that work in 1976.
- 1:34So it was a long, long time ago, You know, my life was
- 1:40progressing in a way that I thought was fairly steady and
- 1:45stable. There was a lot of other stuff
- 1:47going on in my personal life during that time, but
- 1:50professionally I was doing quite well.
- 1:53And then in the late 90s life changed and it took a detour and
- 1:59found myself in a treatment center out in West, TX.
- 2:03I have lost everything that was dear to me, my, my career,
- 2:07family, my dignity and self respect.
- 2:10And I ended up in this treatment center thinking that my life was
- 2:14over. And you know, by the grace of
- 2:16God, I, I, I was asked to about a year after I left and I stayed
- 2:22in West, TX for a while in transitional housing and I was
- 2:28asked to come to work for the treatment center that I had
- 2:33gotten held that. And you know that that that
- 2:37proved to be one of the greatest gifts that I've been given in my
- 2:43life. I started that work.
- 2:46I started the work that I'm doing now in 2002.
- 2:50And, and that has been to help others find a way out of this,
- 2:54the ditch that I was in. And so my job essentially has
- 3:00been for the past 23, almost 24 years, connecting professionals
- 3:08and families and individuals to the help that they need.
- 3:11Yeah. I get a lot of phone calls about
- 3:13a lot of different services. Most of those calls are for
- 3:17services that I refer out to others.
- 3:20And so I've been fortunate to be able to do that and work with
- 3:23some great people and including Justin.
- 3:25Justin and I work together. So if you know that I'll be.
- 3:29I did. Yeah.
- 3:30OK. All right.
- 3:31All right. Oh yeah.
- 3:33Well, I love that. And the thing you sort of closed
- 3:36with there is that you get a lot of calls for services you don't
- 3:40provide or the, or the, you know, the company you represent
- 3:43doesn't provide. And that's one of the great
- 3:45gifts of my own recovery and working in this field is being
- 3:48able to say, Hey, hey, hey, like before you go look in yourself
- 3:52and Googling everywhere, please let me let me connect you with
- 3:55some people because you know, I guess buying a house, buying a
- 4:00car, doing anything there, There's a little bit of that.
- 4:02But with this, for some reason, this treatment world is such AI
- 4:09guess unregulated is the right word.
- 4:11But it is a dangerous place being not having any guidance,
- 4:15just trying to figure this out for for oneself or one's loved
- 4:18one and having people like Rick and Justin and hopefully people
- 4:22would think that about me being able to help guide them.
- 4:24And just, you know, like you said, usually not going to be,
- 4:27you know, new waters are in your case 1 of constellations.
- 4:30But just having those resources across the country and the world
- 4:34to be able to help guide people is a, is a beautiful thing to be
- 4:36able to do. Yeah.
- 4:39It's working out. Together, Hanley.
- 4:41Yeah, Hanley, back when, you know, I don't know if we should
- 4:44use names and all that stuff, but during the origins era, I
- 4:48guess, yeah, Rick and I had the the pleasure of working together
- 4:52and I think very, very highly of Rick.
- 4:53Very respect who you are and and the work that you do man, that's
- 4:58for sure. Thank you.
- 4:59Likewise, my friend. Well, I mean, I've never heard
- 5:02anything but that from people in our field.
- 5:04So, and I'm glad you were, you know, you just told us, you
- 5:08know, your birthday or your your age, don't look it, but 71 still
- 5:13out there, man, it's awesome. Yeah, I, you know, I, I have a
- 5:18hard time believing that I'm that old, you know, for a couple
- 5:22of reasons. You know, I, I, I never
- 5:25envisioned myself being this age considering that my past, you
- 5:34know, even though I had accomplished some things when I
- 5:37was in the finance business, I, I didn't see a really, really
- 5:41long runway for my life based on how I was living.
- 5:47I was living life in the fast way and did a lot of partying
- 5:51and of course work that I was doing kind of it lended itself
- 5:56to that lifestyle and even though it I thought it was, I
- 6:01thought it was having a great time.
- 6:04And I guess to some degree I was periodically, but I never saw
- 6:09that it was something that was going to be sustainable into my
- 6:1270s. I thought it would probably, I
- 6:15didn't probably check out in my 40s and 50s, you know, as an old
- 6:18guy, you know, it is back then I thought 40s and 50s you were,
- 6:22you were an old guy. And, and, and now I, I think
- 6:26maybe 90 to 100 is an old guy. 70 is not an old guy.
- 6:30I go to the gym every day. I have most of my own teeth.
- 6:33I'm married to a woman that's 15 years younger than I am, and she
- 6:36keeps coming back every day, one day at a time.
- 6:41And so you know, I'm doing something right now.
- 6:46That's awesome. Man, that's awesome.
- 6:47I, it's on that note. We, we've got a guy right now, a
- 6:51guy I went to college with coming to new waters.
- 6:54I hadn't seen this guy in, since 1997.
- 6:58And we got connected and he, he said this, he meant it, but he
- 7:01was also being funny because honestly, man, I thought you
- 7:04were dead. And I was like, you know, I kind
- 7:07of thought the same thing about you.
- 7:09But here we are. That is, you know, that 15 years
- 7:15you're a junior and she keeps coming back.
- 7:17And I assume you don't have to say keep coming back to your
- 7:19wife. She just, she comes back of her
- 7:21own accord, right? She she does and and and you
- 7:24know, and and I'm and I'm not, I'm not rich.
- 7:27So it's not, you're not coming back for the money.
- 7:31But you know, I, I've tried to, you know, I've tried to live,
- 7:33I've tried, I've tried to live a, a, a righteous life.
- 7:36You know, I've spent so much in my life on the other side of the
- 7:41Ledger, so to speak, that, you know, I, I can see the benefits
- 7:47of living this way of life far beyond the, you know, the
- 7:51physical. But when I look at the emotional
- 7:54and spiritual benefits, it's, it leads me to make statements like
- 7:58this is the best life I've ever lived.
- 8:00I'm living the best. You know, people say that and
- 8:03sounds cliche but it is literally the truth in my life.
- 8:08You know, I'm, I'm, I'm far from being perfect, but I found a
- 8:13path to Wellness and health that helps me accept who I am,
- 8:21acknowledge who I am, try to maximize the good stuff and
- 8:26minimize the other stuff through a process.
- 8:30And quite frankly, I'm not ashamed to say it's, it's 12
- 8:33step, it's the 12 step process. I'm a disciple of the 12 steps,
- 8:3712 step process. It has been the means by which I
- 8:41have found this new way of life. And it's something that I'm
- 8:45regularly engaged in. And it has nothing to do with
- 8:50drugs and alcohol. It has to do with, you know,
- 8:54just trying to be a better human.
- 8:56Yeah, Amen to that, I hear. You well, you know something
- 8:59people, most people don't know and even sometimes even people
- 9:02who are in 12 step recovery takes them a little while to
- 9:04realize that, that, you know, the only time alcohol is
- 9:08mentioned is in the first half of the first step.
- 9:09It's all about how to live. And we just did a podcast
- 9:13earlier with some guys doing the NA historians.
- 9:18It was very interesting and there's something that just is
- 9:22usually lost on people, especially people who are not,
- 9:24don't have any experience with any kind of 12 step recovery
- 9:26that think it is just like how to not drink or how to not use,
- 9:30but just how to how to live life, life on life on life's
- 9:34term. That's right man, I got.
- 9:35A question for you. So you started in this field in
- 9:372002 and, you know, you and I work in the same realm, at
- 9:43least. I don't know if your whole
- 9:44career has been like that. And, and, you know, business
- 9:45development and outreach, lots of travel and lots of, lots of
- 9:48what we talked about a second ago, connecting people, whether
- 9:51it's a personal friend or, you know, hey, Rick, I, you know, a
- 9:53place in, you know, West, TX that, you know, serves, you
- 9:56know, women 18 to 20, whatever it is, whatever the request is.
- 10:01And it's so much about sending text messages and connections
- 10:04like that. Like, will you just talk about
- 10:06how, what it's been, what it was like working in those early days
- 10:09for you in 2002 versus now, Just like how, the, how technology
- 10:13has changed and how like, how did you do that kind of stuff
- 10:172324 years ago? That's.
- 10:19A very good question, you know. So I started in this work early
- 10:26enough to remember using Mapscos.
- 10:30You know what a Mapsco is? BI.
- 10:32Don't. OK.
- 10:34Most, most people of your generation don't know what a
- 10:38Mapsco is. A Mapsco is is what is our
- 10:43version of Agps today. So what we do with our phones by
- 10:47plugging in an address and our phones and our devices tell us
- 10:51exactly where to go. They speak to us and tell us
- 10:53where to go. This was a book of maps that if
- 10:59I wanted an address or I would plug in, I would just, you know,
- 11:04find a there was maps with a grid and I could find a map in
- 11:10any city. I would have to have that maps
- 11:12go for that particular city. Like if I went to Lubbock, TX,
- 11:16I'd find a maps go for Lubbock, TX and if I needed to go to 28 O
- 11:231 Jones St. I could find on that map.
- 11:27How to get to 2801 Jones through.
- 11:30Yeah, I couldn't do that while I was driving, obviously.
- 11:32So I would stop, you know, a strategy to get to 2801 Jones
- 11:37through. And so, you know, cell phone use
- 11:40was even though it was, it was common, but you know, the
- 11:45capabilities of cellular technology at the time, those
- 11:49capabilities were very limited. But you know, a lot of my work
- 11:54was limited to phone calls with practitioners and, and families.
- 12:01You know, I, I, I developed a habit of answering my phone no
- 12:05matter what time of day it was. It's, it's not the greatest
- 12:09habit, especially if you're married.
- 12:12But answering my phone no matter what time of the day, it because
- 12:15I never knew if somebody was in a crisis that needed help.
- 12:20I know that the nature of the disease that we work with does
- 12:24not take PTO. If I'm at a funeral or a wedding
- 12:28or whatever I'm doing, if that phone rings, there's a chance
- 12:33that there's somebody else on the other end that is in crisis
- 12:36that needs help. And when I said that, you know,
- 12:40God, you know, saved me and pulled me up out of a ditch, you
- 12:45know, he didn't do that so that I could schedule how I'm going
- 12:51to do the work that he has charged me to do.
- 12:57If the phone rings, I answer the phone.
- 12:58So early on, I developed this, this commitment to being
- 13:05available whenever I was needed. And what that it did then it, it
- 13:13gave the impression to a lot of other people that, hey, if we
- 13:17need help, no matter what it is, if I call this guy, if he can't
- 13:24help me, he's going to point me in the direction of where I can
- 13:27find that hell, no matter when that is.
- 13:30And so over a few years, I kind of developed that reputation
- 13:36mostly in Texas. But then as you know, my world
- 13:40expanded. It became, you know, kind of a
- 13:44national thing and the more traveling that I did on
- 13:49business, that network expanded. And so that was how it started
- 13:57for me. It is largely what I still do.
- 14:03I've been, you know, I've done a lot of work.
- 14:05I've worked at missions utilization review, you know,
- 14:09billing at collections. I've done a lot of stuff and and
- 14:13I've been offered positions to do a lot of stuff and I still
- 14:16get, you know, phone calls and inquiries.
- 14:18Hey, we meet somebody for COOCEO this and that and that and this
- 14:23I'm it's not what that's not what God's sake make sure of
- 14:26that, because that takes me away from that 1:00 in the morning,
- 14:322:00 in the morning, phone call it.
- 14:35You know, I get distracted like that.
- 14:37I'm, I'm, I am moving further away from my primary purpose and
- 14:43closer to death because I believe that when I'm no longer
- 14:47purposeful in that way, there's no longer necessary for me to be
- 14:51here, I believe. Now, yeah, I loved, I loved
- 14:55everything you just said, but I needed to hear that because
- 14:59sometimes I, you know, I can get annoyed sometimes and say, oh
- 15:04man, they why does any people only want to seem to want help
- 15:07on New Year's Day, Christmas Eve?
- 15:09You know, when I've, I've been at weddings, funerals, it's
- 15:13like, can't they just call me at 10 AM on a Monday?
- 15:16And it's just but, but you know, it takes me about 5 seconds to
- 15:19realize this is the nature of, of, of what, what this disease
- 15:22is. This disease does not look at
- 15:24calendars and, and take PTO. You're absolutely right and and
- 15:29I always want to be there, you know, the same way I.
- 15:31Used to say it's the work that we've chosen, but it's really
- 15:35the work that we've been chosen to do, yeah.
- 15:38And I'm with you on that 100%, Rick, because, you know, I think
- 15:43we all contemplate that from time to time.
- 15:45And and like you said, you know, there's other, you know,
- 15:48potential opportunities that sometimes present their self and
- 15:50things like that. And at least I can only speak
- 15:52for myself at the end of the day.
- 15:53I don't really know if I, if I didn't work in this field, I
- 15:57really don't know what else I could do or would do, you know,
- 16:01And as being a therapist, I've, you know, I've dabbled and, you
- 16:04know, some outpatient stuff and like have always been very
- 16:07quickly been reminded that like, no, that's this is what I'm
- 16:10supposed to be doing right here. Right here is what I'm supposed
- 16:12to be doing. And, and I agree, I appreciate
- 16:15what you're saying about the foam because in our field, you
- 16:18know, I think there's a lot of buzz, which is, you know, it's a
- 16:20good thing. It's not a bad thing about
- 16:22boundaries and maintaining good boundaries and things like that.
- 16:24And I think sometimes that pendulum swings in the direction
- 16:30of rigidity and making sure that we are not flexible with our
- 16:34time. And and I couldn't agree with
- 16:37you more, Rick, that, you know, the disease of addiction doesn't
- 16:39sleep. It doesn't take PTOI love how
- 16:41you said that. And if the phone rings, right,
- 16:44it's not that we have to answer the phone, that's we get to
- 16:47answer the phone, right? Like, thank God that this person
- 16:50that is on the other end that's trying to get a hold of me has
- 16:52the trust that me and my organization is going to be able
- 16:55to help them in this time of need.
- 16:57And, and how dare I not attend to that in that moment.
- 17:00I think, you know, at least again, that's my belief.
- 17:03So I'm, so I'm, I'm with you on that 100%.
- 17:05Yeah, the best advice I got. So when I first started in the
- 17:09field, I don't remember who the, I don't remember who told me
- 17:12either of these things, But the first was don't let this be my
- 17:14recovery. And I try to stick to that very
- 17:16I'm very careful about that. And then the other thing was
- 17:19always answer the phone, you know, and, and you know, even if
- 17:24I did say, you know what, I'm not going to get that call,
- 17:28then, then all I'm going to do is think about how I didn't get
- 17:30that call and I'd haven't responded yet.
- 17:32So it's just like with everything else that's in front
- 17:34of me, just take care of it. It's in front of me.
- 17:36Just take care of it. For sure.
- 17:40I wanted to ask you, we'll talk about what you do day-to-day,
- 17:44but I want there's a, a recent piece of your, of your story
- 17:49that you were kind. Just share, you know, with me
- 17:51about recently and it's really powerful, interesting
- 17:56development in your life with a member of your family basically
- 18:00you didn't know existed. Would you mind sharing that with
- 18:02us? I don't, not at all.
- 18:05It's, it's, it's a pretty, it's a pretty heavy story, especially
- 18:12at the stage of my life in which it occurred.
- 18:15So a little bit less than three years ago, two years and nine
- 18:21months ago, I discovered that I have a son.
- 18:27Now I have a daughter that that that we, her mom and I raised,
- 18:32you know, and for all of her life, she thought she was an
- 18:38only child. We thought she was an only
- 18:40child. And just by chance this we made
- 18:45this discovery about my son. I was at a funeral.
- 18:49A friend of mine, a social worker in Fort Worth, had passed
- 18:51away and my wife, my current wife and I.
- 18:58Did I say that properly or should I just say my wife and I?
- 19:01My current wife implies that she may not be the last wife
- 19:04doesn't. And you can edit that if you
- 19:09need to. But Sylvia and I went to that
- 19:14funeral and and I discovered during that funeral, reading the
- 19:19obituary that that my friend has a half sister and a half sister
- 19:24was somebody that I knew as a teenager.
- 19:26And what I didn't know is that she had gotten pregnant and, you
- 19:32know, back we were talking about back in the, you know, like
- 19:35691969, she got a pregnant and during that time, you know, a
- 19:39teenage girl getting pregnant and was a source of huge source
- 19:43of shame for the family. So she was whispered away.
- 19:46I later found out she was whispered by the had a baby and
- 19:49then and then eventually put the baby up for adoption.
- 19:53And I had no idea. So just by having a random
- 19:59conversation after the funeral in the church with some people
- 20:05that I grew up with. That conversation led to some
- 20:08other conversations, which led to me getting a phone call one
- 20:11night in May of 2023. I was in New York and it was a
- 20:15friend, a mutual friend who said to me, hey, you know, I talked
- 20:22to my sister about your, your conversation at the church given
- 20:28the funeral. And she says, you know, I don't
- 20:31know if you know it, but I'm really close friends with this
- 20:36guy and and I'm known him most of my life.
- 20:39I've known you all my life. And she said, now that I've made
- 20:42this connection between you and his father, I believe, yeah, or
- 20:48I'm sorry, now that I've made the connection between you and
- 20:52his mother, I believe you're his father.
- 20:56And it just kind of threw me for a huge loop.
- 21:00And she and I, then I said, well, you know what, what, what
- 21:05makes you think that? And she said, well, you know,
- 21:07when I, when I hear your voice, I hear his voice when I, when I
- 21:11look at you, now that I've made this connection, when I see him,
- 21:15I see you. And, and I've shared that with
- 21:18him and he wants to know if you'll do a paternity test.
- 21:21And, you know, it was at the time I, I was 68 and so, and,
- 21:29and, and my life was kind of going like this, you know,
- 21:32actually was a very slow descent, kind of like a plan, a
- 21:37plane coming in for a landing. And I was thinking, OK, we're
- 21:39going to come in for a smooth landing.
- 21:41And then, you know, we'll be playing and it'll be time, It'll
- 21:45be all over, you know, but that's not the plan God had for
- 21:49me because that, that descent got a little bumpy.
- 21:53And, and so I agreed to, I agreed to, I agreed to do a
- 21:58paternity test. I looked around and searched for
- 22:04legal paternity tests. And when you do that, you go
- 22:07into a lab and they, they take your fingerprints, they take
- 22:10photos, 2 forms of ID. It's a big thing.
- 22:14And I just, I thought, I don't, I don't want to do all that.
- 22:17But I went on Google and found that, you know, you can get at
- 22:22home paternity test on Amazon. And so I ordered a test and I
- 22:28got the packet the next day and provided ADNA sample and told
- 22:35our mutual friend, I have this sample, you can take it.
- 22:39I've already paid for it. You can give it to him.
- 22:41All he has to do is register it by scanning the QR code and send
- 22:46it in. And he can do that and keep it
- 22:49confidential. We can share it, but it's his,
- 22:52it's for him. A week or so after that she
- 22:55calls and says, hey, he knows to he wants to know if he will meet
- 23:00with it. And I said, well, to the test
- 23:02results. And she said, well, he does when
- 23:05I don't know what they are. And I said, well, sure, I'll
- 23:08meet with him. But at the time we had house
- 23:10guests, Sylvia had friends in from Florida.
- 23:13It was Memorial Day weekend and and I said, if we're going to do
- 23:19this, we need to do it now because I'm not going to do this
- 23:21in front of people. So half hour labor or so, this
- 23:25big SUV pulls up and a guy gets out, not him, but this guy gets
- 23:30out and he comes to my door and he's asking me to sign a
- 23:33release. And I said, what is this for?
- 23:36He says, well, you know, we've been asked to get you to sign
- 23:39this release to document your meeting.
- 23:43And I said, well, I'm not doing that.
- 23:45And you know, and you know, I was terrified.
- 23:50And so the guy says, well, there's nothing harmful.
- 23:52I said, but I'm just not going to do it.
- 23:54And so I so they left 1520 minutes later they come back and
- 24:00the guy says, well, you know, we've talked about it.
- 24:02And he really, you know, he really wants to meet you.
- 24:05And I said, so we're not going to meet unless I sign this.
- 24:09And he says he's been advised to get this release sign so we can
- 24:14video and videotape the meeting and document the meeting.
- 24:17But it's nothing that's got to be harmful.
- 24:20And I had, while they were gone, I had called try to get my
- 24:22brother on the phone who's kind of my, you know, spiritual
- 24:26guide. And, you know, he's seven years
- 24:28older. And he was my Hebrew couldn't
- 24:31get him on the phone. It was on Friday evening about
- 24:336:00. I mean, it was no, I couldn't
- 24:35get any. And so I went ahead and signed
- 24:39it. And, and so the guy goes back
- 24:42down to the car and he comes back and he's got he's got the
- 24:47guy and another guy with a camera.
- 24:49And these guys come into my house and I introduce myself.
- 24:53I said, yeah, I'm Rick Hubbard. He says, yeah, I'm Kirk
- 24:55Franklin. And I said, yeah, I know who you
- 24:58are. And he says, you know who I am.
- 25:00And I said, yeah, we've met before, actually.
- 25:03And, and, and the reason I knew who he is is that he's he's kind
- 25:07of a famous. Yeah, he has won 20 Grammys.
- 25:12He is a Christian gospel artist, singer-songwriter, more
- 25:18songwriter and musician than singer.
- 25:20But he, he's a big deal. And I knew he was a big deal
- 25:25because I knew he was a big deal.
- 25:27I just didn't know how big a deal he was.
- 25:29And I'm still discovering how big a deal.
- 25:32But I don't know. Flight to Los Angeles 3 or 4
- 25:35years before that I had met him, I introduced myself to and and
- 25:41was I'm sick. I'm sitting on the on the plane
- 25:45he comes and he boards and he sits right across from me and
- 25:48now reaching over and introduce myself to me.
- 25:51And so anyways, it's a crazy story that that YouTube video, I
- 25:57mean that that video became a YouTube video that's now been
- 26:01seen by three or 4 million people.
- 26:04I didn't, you know, I didn't know that's what what we were
- 26:06doing. But you know that I've gotten so
- 26:08much feedback from that from people who have similar stories
- 26:13or who know people that have a similar story.
- 26:17I didn't know how big a thing that was.
- 26:19But with my generation, especially with 23andMe and
- 26:26ancestry.com and those kinds of platforms, there's a lot of this
- 26:31kind of information that's being revealed, what people are
- 26:33finding siblings and parents, and it's a whole thing.
- 26:37And so it's been a crazy story, but it is dramatically changed
- 26:43my life at a time in my life when I thought everything was.
- 26:47And so I knew that there was a reason for it from God's, you
- 26:53know, perspective that God had a reason for doing it now instead
- 26:59of 2530 years ago. And certainly 30 years ago would
- 27:03not have been the most ideal time because I was not the guy
- 27:06then than I am today. And I'm grateful for that.
- 27:10I'm grateful that he was not subjected to what I subjected my
- 27:15daughter and her mother to. We talked about.
- 27:19Perspective, man. Yeah, that is absolutely
- 27:23amazing. Yeah, only somebody in recovery
- 27:26I think would would say and not only see whether they see it or
- 27:31not, but to say it out loud is, is amazing.
- 27:35It's been a, it's been a fascinating journey.
- 27:38And, and he had had, he and I have a, a great relationship.
- 27:42He travels a lot, I travel a lot.
- 27:45We try to, you know, spend as much time as we can connected,
- 27:52you know, through regular phone calls.
- 27:54And, you know, he has four children.
- 27:57So overnight, I became a granddad, you know, my daughter
- 28:01Lauren. Lauren and Lauren Lauren's a big
- 28:02deal. Lauren's AVP at Goldman Sachs,
- 28:05she's 40. That's a big deal.
- 28:08And, you know, she says, well, Dad, now that you have
- 28:11grandkids, I guess that lets me off the hook.
- 28:13And I said no, it doesn't actually, because they're all
- 28:15fun. So you're still on the hook for
- 28:18babies. But, you know, my life has been
- 28:22blast, man, beyond measure, and I am.
- 28:26I'm living a very rich life. And we're not talking about
- 28:31material things. Yeah.
- 28:34Man, thank you for sharing that. Yeah, that's.
- 28:36Amazing. That is absolutely amazing,
- 28:38Rick. I mean literally a once in a
- 28:40lifetime type situation right there.
- 28:42Ma'am, it is it. Is cool I joke around with both
- 28:46of them that hey I guess I'm going to have to get a part time
- 28:48job man to take care of all these kids.
- 28:52How's the relationship with the So the grandkids are, They're
- 28:54already grown, you said? Yeah.
- 28:56Yeah, they are 25. No, yeah, this is new 20252835
- 29:09and 37. OK.
- 29:11That's amazing. Very.
- 29:13Cool. Yeah, Very cool.
- 29:15Yeah, I. Think I have that right?
- 29:16I've got birth dates on my phone.
- 29:18I have to keep it in my phone so I can remember who's what.
- 29:22Well, that thank you for because I'd heard bits and pieces of it.
- 29:25You were kind enough to share that with me a while ago.
- 29:27But it was one of those things where we were at a conference
- 29:29and people were, you know, coming up to us every, you know.
- 29:31And so I had to hear it all in one fell swoop.
- 29:33Is is amazing to get the whole chronology in one, you know, 1
- 29:37sitting. Well, while we're here, tell us
- 29:40about what you currently do now. And, you know, we know what you
- 29:43do, but tell us and tell our listeners what you do in the
- 29:45treatment centers you represent. Yeah.
- 29:47So, you know, after that treatment center out in West, TX
- 29:52and I worked there for three years, I left and moved to
- 29:55Florida because that's, you know, where she was.
- 30:01You know, Sylvia, I met her in Austin at a conference and, you
- 30:05know, we got engaged and got married in 2006.
- 30:08Well, the year before I moved to Florida and went to work for
- 30:15another treatment Center for a real brief period of time.
- 30:18And it was a culture that I could not, I just couldn't, I
- 30:22refused to work within that culture.
- 30:24And it was a world that I'd never been exposed to from a
- 30:27business development perspective.
- 30:29You know, they were, it was kind of the I was exposed to the
- 30:33underbelly and, you know, not bad people, just the way
- 30:40business was being done was not something that I was accustomed
- 30:44to coming from a little town in West TX.
- 30:47And, and so I was fortunate enough to get my old job back at
- 30:53that facility. But I was able to move and live
- 30:56wherever, you know, they agreed to let me live wherever.
- 30:59I didn't have to move back to West TX to get that job.
- 31:02So I'm, I left Florida, see me and I got married in 2006.
- 31:07I moved right away. She waited until her kids had
- 31:12graduated from her youngest was still in high school when she
- 31:17moved in 2007. And so I worked at that
- 31:20treatment center up until 2012, which worked for Origins and was
- 31:26at Origins for 11 years. And during that period of time,
- 31:34we had acquired the Hanley Center in West Palm Beach.
- 31:37And that's where I, I got the 2. I had the chance to work with
- 31:41Justin. And so that work, and during all
- 31:45that time, it's been the same work.
- 31:46Now my title has changed and I've been given a little bit
- 31:49more responsibility for this thing or that thing, but
- 31:52essentially it has been, you know, focused 100% on outreach.
- 31:59You know, we, I call it professional relations because,
- 32:01you know, we connect our centers, our facilities to
- 32:06professionals who have clients that may have a need for our
- 32:11services and in it not our services, services similar to
- 32:15ours that may fit their specific meat.
- 32:19And, you know, in doing that work, I've had the, I've had the
- 32:24good fortune of being able to connect with people all over the
- 32:27country, all over the world actually, because I've had, you
- 32:31know, my, my, my wife is from West London and her family lives
- 32:35there. So whenever we would travel to
- 32:38London to visit family, I would always find ways to connect with
- 32:41my tribe in, in the UK. And so they're a therapist and
- 32:45recovery coaches and interventionists and, you know,
- 32:49psychiatrists all over the UK and other parts of Europe that I
- 32:55got connected to in, you know, in doing this work.
- 32:59And so that that network and that that reach has been pretty
- 33:05broad. I'm going to work at
- 33:08Constellation in September of 2023.
- 33:11And that was after the owners of Origins decided that they wanted
- 33:15to sell. And I helped to, you know,
- 33:21transition that that transaction.
- 33:27And I, I agreed to stay for a while, but I knew it was time
- 33:30for me to move on when, when the owners, you know, decided
- 33:35they're going to sell. And and so I had to get fortune
- 33:39of going to work for consolation in September of 2023.
- 33:43And the work has been to say, you know, fundamentally it has
- 33:48stayed the same. I, I just don't see myself doing
- 33:51really anything else. I know a lot of things about a
- 33:55lot of things related to this work, But what really gets me up
- 33:59at 5:00 AM and drives me is being a resource to those who
- 34:05are sick and suffering. And that's that's the only work
- 34:09I intend to do. Awesome, well thank you for
- 34:13sharing all that and we're fans. We you know, I say this till I'm
- 34:17blue in the face and to the annoyance of some of my
- 34:20colleagues and Co workers that we only want to work with
- 34:24people, places and providers we like know and trust.
- 34:27And y'all are certainly one of them as evidence as some recent
- 34:29stuff. So while we got just a minute
- 34:32left, we just we're going to put all your information you
- 34:35provided, you know, on the YouTube channel for this episode
- 34:40plus, you know, wherever we post this podcast.
- 34:43But how do people find you? Rick Hubbard and consolation and
- 34:47Sarah, if you're ready to share that.
- 34:50Well, yeah, I mean, my, you know, my, my cell phone number
- 34:54has been the same for 24 years. And I I, you know, do you want
- 34:59me to share that right now? Yeah, if you.
- 35:01Want to that number? Is that number is 817-507-5615,
- 35:10That's my cell phone number and I generally answer that phone
- 35:13but agrees my e-mail address is r.hubbardhubbarbr.hubbard@constellationbh.com.
- 35:27Awesome and thank you. Thank you.
- 35:32Thank you for giving me the opportunity to visit with you
- 35:35guys. Yeah, likewise.
- 35:37Thank you so much for coming on. Yeah, thank.
- 35:39You for coming on and thank you for being, you know, somebody
- 35:41I've looked up to since I started working in the field and
- 35:43just I'm always glad to see you always got to talk to you and
- 35:46you, you know, you helped. I know you, you know, you've
- 35:49helped a lot of people, you know, getting treatment and I
- 35:51know you've know you've helped people in this field, but you've
- 35:53helped me more than you know, to just about being who you are.
- 35:56So thank you so much. Thank you.
- 35:57Really thank you. I really appreciate it.
