- 0:54Sean McAllister: Welcome to Vegas Revealed and welcome to fall.
- 0:57Sean McAllister: We're already in September, but it doesn't really feel like it.
- 1:01Dayna Roselli: No.
- 1:02Dayna Roselli: Well, thanks for joining us, everyone.
- 1:03Dayna Roselli: I'm Dana Roselli, that's Sean McAllister.
- 1:06Dayna Roselli: And like Sean mentioned, you know, we're approaching fall, but it doesn't feel like fall here in Las Vegas because we're hitting another streak of like 111 for like four days straight, Sean, on Labor Day weekend into the next week.
- 1:17Sean McAllister: This is not what it's supposed to feel like on Labor Day.
- 1:21Dayna Roselli: No.
- 1:22Dayna Roselli: But you know, I mean, I always say don't mind the heat because I grew up in Rochester, New York, so did you, where we got all that lake effect snow and winter was like eight months long.
- 1:31Dayna Roselli: So I'm like, ah, another week of like major heat.
- 1:34Dayna Roselli: We can deal with it.
- 1:35Dayna Roselli: We don't have hurricanes, we don't have tornadoes.
- 1:37Sean McAllister: That is true.
- 1:38Sean McAllister: But one thing we do have is uh pumpkin spice lattes.
- 1:42Sean McAllister: Pumpkin spice everything is already back.
- 1:44Sean McAllister: Are you one of those people?
- 1:46Dayna Roselli: I am so anti-pumpkin spice in the whole thing.
- 1:49Dayna Roselli: Yes, I'm just not into it.
- 1:50Dayna Roselli: I get everyone gets so excited for fall here, and that's the thing.
- 1:54Dayna Roselli: And like I always feel like I don't want to rush it.
- 1:57Dayna Roselli: I like I kind of like summer because I grew up with the eight-month winters, and so I'm like, I don't want to, I don't want to wear a sweater and drink pumpkin spice.
- 2:05Dayna Roselli: Why?
- 2:05Dayna Roselli: Like my suntan and and and I like my, you know, uh pina colada and my chilled white wine.
- 2:13Dayna Roselli: Why do we need to go pumpkin spice?
- 2:15Sean McAllister: But doesn't pumpkin spice just like warm your soul a little bit?
- 2:18Dayna Roselli: Not really.
- 2:19Dayna Roselli: Really?
- 2:20Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and I hate fall decorations.
- 2:22Dayna Roselli: I think they're ugly.
- 2:23Dayna Roselli: You do orange leaves all around people's front porch and all that stuff.
- 2:30Dayna Roselli: I am such a grinch when it comes to that stuff.
- 2:32Dayna Roselli: I don't know why.
- 2:33Sean McAllister: Well, see, fall is my favorite season.
- 2:35Dayna Roselli: Well, good.
- 2:35Dayna Roselli: I can't wait to come over to the home office and see all your decor.
- 2:39Sean McAllister: Oh, just wait, the totes are out in the garage and they're ready to be cracked open.
- 2:43Dayna Roselli: All right, well, I'll go with the flow.
- 2:45Dayna Roselli: Listen, as long as people like it and they they're enjoying life and they have something to look forward to, I'm all for it.
- 2:50Dayna Roselli: Just don't, you know, ask me to participate.
- 2:53Sean McAllister: Let's hope we all have something to look forward to, right?
- 2:56Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 2:56Dayna Roselli: So uh another, obviously, week in Vegas.
- 2:59Dayna Roselli: Uh, had a great show last week.
- 3:00Dayna Roselli: Next week we're gonna be at the win, which will be really great.
- 3:03Dayna Roselli: They're revamping their lake of dreams, and we're gonna go check it out.
- 3:07Dayna Roselli: So I look forward to that.
- 3:08Dayna Roselli: But we have a lot to talk about today when it comes to uh downtown Las Vegas and everything that's going on there.
- 3:16Dayna Roselli: It seems like there's always something happening.
- 3:17Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's really exciting uh to see what's happening in downtown Las Vegas, a big revitalization when it comes to uh uh restaurants, the the beverage and and dining scene.
- 3:30Sean McAllister: Uh there's a lot of craft breweries going in, and that's fun.
- 3:35Sean McAllister: But also one of the most historic properties is about to uh mark its 50 years in downtown Las Vegas.
- 3:43Sean McAllister: So we're gonna hear all about the plans for that.
- 3:45Dayna Roselli: Right, and it's right next to Circa, which I did want to point out.
- 3:48Dayna Roselli: Anyone looking for a job here in Las Vegas, either maybe you want to move here or you're out of a job and you're local and you're listening, um, they just announced, you know, big push for hiring.
- 3:58Dayna Roselli: And so did Resorts World, which um has said like follow their LinkedIn page.
- 4:04Dayna Roselli: They've got like 6,000 positions to fill, and they're gonna slowly start rolling them out.
- 4:08Dayna Roselli: So, but that's where they are telling everyone to go.
- 4:11Dayna Roselli: So I'm excited that you know there's gonna be new jobs here in Las Vegas.
- 4:16Dayna Roselli: It's been so hard because we are such a tourist destination um for so many people that have lost their job, but hopefully maybe these positions will be something that those folks can can apply to and get.
- 4:28Sean McAllister: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:29Sean McAllister: And it's nice to see that there are places who are hiring right now.
- 4:33Sean McAllister: And from an entertainment standpoint, it's nice to see that there are still restaurants and events that are starting to open and starting to welcome people back, especially in like the the media world.
- 4:49Sean McAllister: You know, there would be invites going out all the time, and we're starting to see those again.
- 4:54Dayna Roselli: I know it's exciting, like you said, new things opening, new kind of you know, people adjusting with the new way, and maybe going, well, let's do it this way instead, and they wanna they want people to experience it.
- 5:04Dayna Roselli: So it's it's very, you know, exciting to to feel an invite come in and go, okay, things are slowly getting back to normal.
- 5:13Dayna Roselli: It's it's never gonna be quite the same, you know, too soon, but but we know in time we'll be back.
- 5:19Sean McAllister: Yeah, no, I just wanted to mention really quick, a few episodes ago, we uh spoke with Oksana Bayul, the Olympic gold medal figure skater, who is in the works of putting a show together to launch here in Las Vegas, and just this week got a sweet little note from Oksana and her family uh thanking us for being on Vegas Revealed and uh wishing us the best of luck.
- 5:48Sean McAllister: So if you haven't listened to Oksana Bayul, uh go back a couple episodes and be sure to check that interview out.
- 5:55Sean McAllister: She's great.
- 5:56Dayna Roselli: Yeah, she really is.
- 5:57Dayna Roselli: It was a it was a great interview.
- 5:58Dayna Roselli: We loved it, and she keeps thanking us for kind of bringing her emotions to the top again, you know, because we had such a great conversation and and she has such a you know amazing life story.
- 6:08Dayna Roselli: So we're we're thankful for that.
- 6:10Dayna Roselli: Um something else that I did want to mention is that when you talk about past podcasts, you and I sometimes we do our little bit of digging to like, okay, where do we stand, you know, in the rankings?
- 6:22Dayna Roselli: So Buzz Sprout, our you know, our hosting service where we host our podcast, had these statistics out and it said, hey, if this you get this many downloads per month, you're in this bracket.
- 6:32Dayna Roselli: So we found out we're in the top 10% of all podcasts when it comes to downloads.
- 6:39Dayna Roselli: And so we just want to thank everyone for listening.
- 6:41Sean McAllister: Absolutely.
- 6:42Sean McAllister: That's uh we do have listeners from from all over the country here in the United States and all over the world in uh more than uh 36 countries around the world.
- 6:53Sean McAllister: So, yes, thank you for uh taking the time to spend some time with us.
- 6:59Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's been uh it's it's been a true honor, it's been a lot of fun.
- 7:02Dayna Roselli: People say, Are you, you know, what do you do the podcast for?
- 7:04Dayna Roselli: It's like we do it for fun, you know.
- 7:05Dayna Roselli: We just really enjoy doing this, chatting, interviewing people, and staying in tune with Las Vegas.
- 7:11Dayna Roselli: And uh we're in the top 10%, which we thought we were gonna be in like the top 50.
- 7:14Dayna Roselli: We're like, okay, hopefully we'll have enough downloads that you know we're in the top 50%.
- 7:18Dayna Roselli: But then it was 10.
- 7:20Dayna Roselli: And really it's more like top 7%, I'm not gonna lie.
- 7:23Dayna Roselli: Because we were, you know, above the number.
- 7:25Dayna Roselli: But we, you know, I won't I won't pat myself on the back too much.
- 7:28Sean McAllister: Do they send out ribbons or anything?
- 7:30Dayna Roselli: Probably not.
- 7:30Dayna Roselli: But we did get a martini when we visited the plaza.
- 7:33Dayna Roselli: So I'm excited to get to this interview.
- 7:35Dayna Roselli: We're gonna take a quick break and uh coming back after this, we travel to the Oscars restaurant at the plaza.
- 7:44Dayna Roselli: It wasn't open yet, but the bar was open for us.
- 7:49Sean McAllister: Yeah, we got VIP treatment.
- 7:51Sean McAllister: You'll hear all about that when we speak with the CEO of the Plaza, Jonathan Jasso, next on Vegas Reveal.
- 7:59Dayna Roselli: Hey, a big shout out to our sponsor, Vegas.pizza.
- 8:03Dayna Roselli: You gotta follow them on Instagram.
- 8:05Dayna Roselli: It's Instagram.com backslash vegas.dot pizza.
- 8:10Dayna Roselli: And there you can see these delicious pizzas, Sean, that are made from kind of the old recipes of the old neighborhood in Brooklyn.
- 8:18Sean McAllister: I know, I love that.
- 8:19Sean McAllister: You can just taste the history when you bite into one of these pizzas.
- 8:24Sean McAllister: And it's a really cool concept.
- 8:25Sean McAllister: It's not a pizzeria that you can walk into in person.
- 8:29Sean McAllister: The only way that you can experience Vegas.pizza is by ordering on a delivery app.
- 8:35Sean McAllister: This is a new virtual pizzeria.
- 8:38Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's really cool.
- 8:39Dayna Roselli: Uber Eats, Postmates, Grubhub.
- 8:42Dayna Roselli: You can order, and you know, you can't sit at the bar, but they'll deliver it to your house or your office, and you can enjoy the pizza in the comforts, you know, of your own home.
- 8:49Dayna Roselli: And I hear, Sean, that UberEats is doing like a two-for-one deli special too, so you might want to get in on that.
- 8:56Sean McAllister: So be sure when you are uh when your tummy's grumbling and you're ready for a big slice, look up vegas.pizza.
- 9:08Sean McAllister: Welcome back to Vegas Revealed.
- 9:10Sean McAllister: Still to come, our two tips, and one of them is a great outdoor dining option that's uh just set off the strip, so you want to stick around for that.
- 9:18Sean McAllister: But in the meantime, we've made our way to uh downtown Las Vegas.
- 9:22Sean McAllister: We're sitting in Oscar's Steakhouse at the plaza, Dana.
- 9:26Dayna Roselli: I know, pretty excited about this.
- 9:27Dayna Roselli: We have the CEO, Jonathan Jostle, with us uh on the podcast today, and we figured, you know what, we might as well come and hang out here and do this welcome.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Good to see you.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: I I appreciate it.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: It's nice to have you guys here.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Love your energy and love what you're love what you're doing.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: So thank you for having me.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 9:45Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's fun to sit in Oscar's uh for a change when it's empty because it's always bustling.
- 9:49Sean McAllister: I believe you don't have a drink in front of you, actually.
- 9:50Sean McAllister: Would you like a drink?
- 9:51Sean McAllister: That's true.
- 9:52Sean McAllister: Um I mean, it's a you gotta have a martini when you're here, right?
- 9:55Dayna Roselli: Always up for a cocktail.
- 9:56Dayna Roselli: Me, I'm okay.
- 9:58Dayna Roselli: Because it's you know, I've already put on the COVID-10, so try to cut out the calories.
- 10:03Sean McAllister: How do you like your martini?
- 10:05Sean McAllister: Uh extra dirty.
- 10:06Sean McAllister: Extra dirty up.
- 10:07Dayna Roselli: Oh, he's ordering from his phone.
- 10:09Dayna Roselli: Is this what you do?
- 10:10Dayna Roselli: Well, now I feel like I should take part.
- 10:11Dayna Roselli: Oh, give me a dirty martini too.
- 10:13Dayna Roselli: Why not?
- 10:14Sean McAllister: Stu.
- 10:14Sean McAllister: So is this part of the the new the experience at the plaza now?
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Do you have online ordering for No, this is this is we're not open yet, and we're doing a podcast, so I'm having someone make you a dirty martini.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, so this is like super VIP.
- 10:26Dayna Roselli: This is Yeah, this is CEO VIP.
- 10:28Dayna Roselli: You've been CEO since what, 2014?
- 10:30Dayna Roselli: Is it?
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Uh 2014 I got licensed.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Um I was 29 years old when I got my gaming license, which I believe at the time was one of the youngest unrestricted licensees in the state.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and the the experience was pretty pretty interesting to go through that licensing process.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Luckily for me, I was um didn't have much history because it's all about your background and previous jobs, previous employers.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: So getting that licensing, uh going through that licensing process was an incredible experience for me.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And obviously going up in front of the gaming control board and the commission was was a pretty cool experience at that at that point.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Um they really like dig into you, don't they?
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Do a lot of research.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Well they they do, they do a lot of research, uh, but like I said, for me, I didn't have a previous employment history, I didn't have trusts and offshore stuff, and I didn't have homes in other countries.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I think for for a lot of people going through the licensing process, they if you have if you have a house in uh Italy, uh the Game of Control Board's gonna go there and check it out.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: They're gonna go to all your different uh historical uh points of either way you lived or your other employment.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: But for me it was a it was a pretty basic thing.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: It still took about 12 months to go through the process though.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's it's uh it's thorough.
- 11:39Dayna Roselli: Well, you've done so much with the place.
- 11:41Dayna Roselli: Let's talk about some of the some of the changes through the years.
- 11:43Dayna Roselli: I know there was obviously a big revamp and some of the things that maybe you're working on now.
- 11:47Dayna Roselli: I saw you tweet something that something was coming soon, so I'm hoping you're gonna let us know what that is.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: So actually, um I I when I moved out here was 2007.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: So I only became the CEO of seven years later.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Um I was here with the property in more of a development capacity and with the ownership group.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And in twenty two thousand nine-10 we actually shut down for a full remodel of the plaza, which at the time was a little risky because we were still going through the recession.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Uh it it feels crazy to talk about those issues from 2008-9, given what we're facing today.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: But we were doing it, we shut down for a major remodel of all the rooms and that project was really um came out of the fact that the fountain blue on the strip, which today I think is gonna be called the Drew, had gone bankrupt.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: And uh they were selling all of the furniture out of the fountain blue.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: So the designer on the project at the time said all of this brand new furniture that's gonna be part of a five-star, five uh diamond resort is available.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Do you want to check it out?
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: And uh we went to look at it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: It was literally in the basement of this of that big blue building on the strip.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And there was tile and carpet and headboards, and this was I was like, wow.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: So we bought basically 1200 rooms worth of furniture straight out of the basement there.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: And uh the owner who was in England at the time bought it without even seeing it.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: I just told him it's really nice, and we'll remodel the plaza with it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And so that was the that was basically the um starting point for the remodel in 2010 when we shut down.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: We reopened in 2011 with then we did Oscar Steakhouse, because part of it was like, well, you're gonna have a thousand nice new rooms, but you kind of need a steakhouse.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And we didn't have it.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Well, this was Firefly.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you guys ever came together.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: It used to be Firefly, which was really cool, but uh you know, we needed a steakhouse given what we were doing to the rest of the place.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: And then someone said, Well, hold on, you can't do a thousand rooms, have a great steakhouse.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: What about the casino?
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: So it's like, okay, let's remodel the casino.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: So what about the lobby?
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: So we did everything except for the pool deck and the convention area.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It was into 2010.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: And then fast forward, it didn't go exactly uh the well, downtown wasn't quite where it is today.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: The r the re renovation plan and the team, we we didn't do as well as we had hoped to do back in 2011 when we reopened.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So when I finally went through the licensing process, the next step was let's remodel the bingo room, the convention room, the pool deck.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: So we just continued to upgrade the property.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: And you know, a lot of people thought you should probably knock it down and restart.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: I took a different approach, which was there's a lot of history here.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: We're coming up on our 50-year anniversary.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Um for the the plaza's gonna have a 50-year birthday, you guys will both be there, I hope, absolutely next July.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: And it was just an opportunity to continue to upgrade this great iconic building and to bring it back to life.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: And and I think part of the issue was it's such a uh you s you drive down the freeway, you see it, it's such an iconic building, but people sort of forgot about the plaza over the years of for lack of a better word, neglect.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And so bringing it back to uh the forefront of downtown was something we really wanted to do, and we feel like we we were doing a good job of that pre- uh the pandemic.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:54Sean McAllister: And i when you're in downtown, obviously there's a a unique vibe in downtown Las Vegas that's different from the strip, but you're still competing with those resorts on on up Las Vegas Boulevard a little bit.
- 15:07Sean McAllister: Uh what are the unique challenges and opportunities that you face when you have a historic property?
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: So, I mean we definitely you know, we don't see ourselves necessarily competing with the strip, but a lot of people from the strip come downtown.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, last year we had 20 million people come to downtown Las Vegas, check out Fremont Street Experience.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And there's so much to do here now for for locals as well, not just tourists whether it's the Smith Center, you know, there's the residential now that's coming to downtown.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so definitely the challenges, you know, are the older bones.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: You know, we we deal with, for example, uh right now we're upgrading our elevators.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: I've never thought I'd spend so much time thinking about elevators and learning about elevators, but we've been uh we have 19 elevators in this building.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: And so we're upgrading every single one of them.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: It's called a modernization.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: We're ripping them all out, putting in new equipment.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: So it's expensive, it's a constant upgrade.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: You have plumbing that's older, you gotta constant constantly stay up updated on that.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Um but then the opportunity is I think the number one thing people want to hear about when they come to Las Vegas is the history.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: They love the mob, they love the neon, they love the glitz, they love the glamour.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And if you can play to that, and our light bulbs and our history are arguably some of the best.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: If you think about Oscar's steakhouse, um the history of what he represents, we really we really embrace that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: And so I think that's a the a great opportunity for us to to keep playing that up as well.
- 16:27Sean McAllister: Well, and Oscar has unique history, but even this steakhouse, didn't it used to be a pool?
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that was the pool deck.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Um right over there uh was a pool deck.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: We have some pretty cool pictures.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Have you guys seen it?
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've I've seen all the old pictures, yeah.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: And they were all wearing like the polyester suits.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um it was pretty cool.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: So we didn't know that was a pool deck, and when we were building out Firefly, this is a crazy thing.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: So after that was a pool deck, it became center stage.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know how long you guys have been in town, but that was like the restaurant to go to, like for prom in the 90s.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: It was it was a great place.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And um when we when that was getting demolished to become Firefly, there was a sign in the ground that said no diving.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: And I didn't understand why there was said no diving painted on the on the side of the floor.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And so we started doing more research, and that's when we found the pictures of the pool uh that that used to be.
- 17:17Dayna Roselli: Incredible.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: It was pretty cool.
- 17:18Dayna Roselli: Oh, yeah, you never answered what is coming soon that you showed pictures of.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So so I didn't know that that was um uh well I didn't know, I was posting on Twitter, I guess, but it it it's actually one of our properties in East Fremont, it's not in the plaza.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's in the plaza.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Our big, our big uh a lot of people asked me if that was the next uh iteration of Greyhound, and Greyhound is still there uh for another 10 months, so that will be a surprise then.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: But that was a property down in East Fremont.
- 17:44Dayna Roselli: Okay.
- 17:44Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 17:45Dayna Roselli: Something that's coming soon?
- 17:46Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 17:46Dayna Roselli: Okay, yeah, love that.
- 17:48Dayna Roselli: The more the better.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be pretty cool.
- 17:50Dayna Roselli: They're doing so much on Fremont, um, you know, all the renovations and stuff there too, and kind of bringing back the old uh lights and light posts, so we're excited to see all of that.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Um let's talk about it's a pretty cool area when you think about what that used to be.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh when I moved out here 10 years ago, you could not walk off of the canopy without sort of getting a little scared.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: And then you see you saw what happened with Beauty Bar and uh Downtown Cocktail Room, and slowly all these bars and restaurants came to be and now it's basically an extension of Fremont Street experience.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: People just walking down there.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: It's it's pretty cool.
- 18:19Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it really it really, really is.
- 18:20Dayna Roselli: And it's and it's fun.
- 18:21Dayna Roselli: We look forward to everything obviously getting back to normal.
- 18:24Dayna Roselli: How has this time kind of changed your mentality when it comes to just gaining, hosting people in your resort casino?
- 18:31Dayna Roselli: Um what have you had to think about that you need to either change or you just going, you know what, I'm keeping it the same.
- 18:36Dayna Roselli: Everyone's gonna come back and things are gonna go back to normal.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: No one's keeping it the same.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: That's not possible.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: And we we don't even open the bar here in Oscar's you gotta have cocktail service.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Um you know what's funny is in the old days, a good review was like uh my host took care of me, I had a great time at the craps table, or I I enjoyed my meal at Oscar's today.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Good reviews is like they're really good with their sanitizer, uh, there's lots of masks, everyone's wearing masks.
- 19:00Dayna Roselli: We like the temperature checks.
- 19:01Dayna Roselli: The temperature checks, yeah.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Like that's become the new norm of good reviews.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: And and that's something that we you know we're adapting to.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: We we feel like we've done a really good job of following those guidelines as a property.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: We really have taken that seriously.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Four people per elevator, um, temperature checks, not just at the front desk but the whole place.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Here in Oscars, obviously, we follow all the guidelines, 50% capacity, and we we do a good job of enforcing mandatory masks everywhere.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: And most of that's coming from the governor's guidelines, so we're just doing what we have to do.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know what's difficult is it's just hard to plan.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: You know, someone asked me the other night, Well, are we gonna do fireworks for New Year's Eve?
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And and I said, I don't know.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Who knows, right?
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, we did do July 4th fireworks because we had already committed to that, and honestly, that was probably insane given the situation we were in and the crowd that showed up for it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: We didn't do an event, but it's just people everywhere.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people want to get out on July 4th, people want to see fireworks.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: We were one of only uh a handful of places that actually did them.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: So that's the tough part, is just planning.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: You know, we we have uh an arena outside where we do the rodeo, we do demolition derbies, but we don't know what we can do.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: And and we well, we know we can't do it now, we just don't know if and when you will be able to do it.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: So, how do you plan for that?
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: But in terms of um taking care of customers, that's that's that hasn't changed.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: We still want to be down there, not shaking hands, but bumping elbows, uh having a drink with customers, getting to know them, and really still providing that personalized service, which I think is something we've tried to develop down here.
- 20:27Sean McAllister: And uh one thing that you can count on, two things really.
- 20:30Sean McAllister: You have uh a neighbor straight out your front door with uh the new circa tower that Derek Stevens is building down here.
- 20:38Sean McAllister: You have a uh a huge new apartment complex out your back door.
- 20:41Sean McAllister: So you're being sandwiched by by new development.
- 20:44Sean McAllister: What what possibilities does that open up for you guys?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, you're a very observant guy.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: The the uh we've always said that Main Street is gonna be the best area of downtown Las Vegas.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: We've always believed that we just maybe we're a little um ahead of the time.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: But now with what Derek's doing with Sarker, and and uh you know, we used to own that.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: We it used to be the Las Vegas Club, we sold it to him, which was a crazy story.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: But in the time everyone said that was crazy, why would you do that?
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Now you see this and you think, well, this is only gonna be really good for us for all of downtown.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: And then you have 800 apartments across the street, plus you have the Smith Center, you have the Frank Geary Luruvo Center, you have the children's museum, you have um uh what's the other one called the uh well the My Museum's that direction, but yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Um you you have a lot going on.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: But anyway, the 800 apartments is something that I've always said is really important because a lot of the local places, especially now when there's not as much international travel, you need locals and you need people to support your food and beverage, your gaming, your bingo, uh, your other events.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: And so we're working on a bridge with the city to connect those eight hundred units to across our site.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: We own uh the plaza sits on seventeen acres going north to south.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: So that's a big chunk of land in between in the m sandwich in between everything you just described happening here.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: So we think it's uh it's just it's just getting started for Main Street and obviously with Greyhound leaving I think it might be the most important thing to happen to downtown in in the last 15 years.
- 22:08Sean McAllister: So summer 2021 is when Greyhound is going to be finding a new location.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Oh well I hope they find one before then but because they're going to be out they're going to be out of here by then.
- 22:18unknown: Exactly.
- 22:18Dayna Roselli: Exactly.
- 22:19Dayna Roselli: I love it.
- 22:20Dayna Roselli: I love it.
- 22:20Dayna Roselli: Well I always ask everyone this and I know like you said it is hard to predict but I mean do you feel like uh Vegas will be back in full force?
- 22:29Dayna Roselli: I mean I know there's going to be differences but I think there's so much fear from first of all we hear a lot from the listeners in other countries like I can't wait to get back the board can't wait for the borders to open missing it so much and then we also hear from the locals like we don't know what's going to happen and um I mean anything you can can say to to encourage people that that things are going to be back at some point we just don't know I guess how long?
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: So I I don't try to encourage people to come back because I think it's really a a personal thing this whole situation.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And you should do what makes you feel comfortable.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah that's the most important thing.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: But when you come here on Saturday night and you see how busy some of the places are but in a in a respectful way they're not standing on top of each other but there's people I mean these hotels are busy still I think people think of us as a ghost town and and sure some days it might seem slower than it would otherwise be but I gotta tell you Saturday night we were we were busy we were sold out in the hotel we we're only running 70% of our full amount of rooms but we were sold out the rooms we had the steakhouse is busy the casino's got a good energy and everyone's wearing masks everyone's keeping their distances but I think people would be surprised if they came here and realized that they can have a good time and that Vegas is still here offering that great experience and you know I I think the people that come here actually end up being like wow that was that was pretty good.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: That was a good time I mean I think having the bars come back will be really helpful.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah because that's kind of a basic thing that you you sort of miss when you come to Vegas.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: But um but I do believe we'll be back.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: I do believe it'll be Vegas as usual sometime next year.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: I think obviously we'll miss not having the Raider stadium being able to go there and the T Mobile arena and those are the things that I really think on the weekends would be great.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And then the biggest hurt right now and people are realizing it is the conventions.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah we need we need those conventions back in the you know we need NFR here in December we need CES here in January and I and I'm confident they'll be back and the town will recover.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: It's just you know we we rely so much on international travel and conventions that now especially um the strip in downtown you know the local casinos they have the locals but the downtown area and the strip which are so heavily dependent on tourism and conventions we we're all sitting here thinking can't come soon enough and I do believe they'll be back.
- 24:41Dayna Roselli: Yeah but we'll just have to to see how long it takes.
- 24:44Dayna Roselli: How about entertainment here?
- 24:45Dayna Roselli: What do you focus on entertainment?
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: I know you have the theater any plans for that and what's going on right now well actually funny I was at dinner last night and a guy was standing there and I was wearing my plaza mask and he said oh I I've been to the plaza this was on the strip and I was checking out um the new Bugsy and Myers steakhouse and uh the guy said oh I was at the plaza just last year I came to see Frankie Schinter um who used to be our headliner in the showroom he's a great guy.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I love him.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: But now we've now we've tried comedy.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: We've been doing comedy um the last well again up until this point we were doing comedy three nights a week Thursday Friday Saturday in the showroom we had some pretty good comedians we had Tom Green Nick DePaolo uh some bigger names and they did they would they were doing pretty well we were starting to build that following of the comedy club um so that was our use for the showroom uh we also had live music in the lounge seven nights a week which we've had to stop right now uh but that always added a nice energy in the casino and then we had the arena out uh to the back to the south and that's where we did rodeos um other equestrian events we did demolition derbies did you guys ever come to that that no I never made it to that I didn't but I didn't I grew up with demolition derbies we grew up in the same area back in western New York and demolition derbies were like huge it was it was the thing to do.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: I had no idea how popular they were coming from England you've never been to a demolition derby right and then they came and brought us this thing and I said this sounds insane they're just gonna bash cars into each other sold out right away oh my gosh really 2,500 people is is our max attendance out there and uh it was it was pretty crazy.
- 26:20Dayna Roselli: That is so cool.
- 26:21Dayna Roselli: Yeah I always think about what was it a happy days episode of Happy Days Pinky Tuscadero and and that was a demolition derby I think but yeah your martini's almost ready but there's a basic question I did not ask you Jin or vodka?
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Oh vodka vodka vodka he's like vodka there he is vodka vodka yeah great and I love this looking ahead to your 50th anniversary next year I know you said there was going to be a big party are are there m big things to be uh unveiled with the property do you have things in the works yeah so um for f for the 50 year anniversary we also have a brand new pool deck it's it's a couple of years old now but we would do concerts up there and live entertainment up there we do our July 4th fireworks show up there um for the 50 year anniversary it falls on July 4th it's the I think if I'm not mistaken July 4th next year is a Sunday so we were planning a weekend a Friday Saturday Sunday we wanted to go with some local Vegas bands some of them have used this property for their music videos in the past and we wanted to do something like that to to help bring uh some some excitement to the property obviously July 4th do fireworks and then there was a concept we were working on which we were really excited for um which was to do with a a bar a new bar um obviously we've had to put that on hold but we were getting pretty close to doing that at the start of the year and then we we we we uh paused that but we will come back and I hope to have that done by next July given um you know if if the if we're fingers if we're allowed to open bars again and get back to normal business then that would be our our dream situation.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: It's a pretty cool concept and it's right underneath the lights over here so it's it'd be pretty cool.
- 28:01Dayna Roselli: Yeah I mean you do those lights out front are so great.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: I mean I noticed so many people taking pictures yeah really really cool every day we get people tagging pictures of those of those lights.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: There's not that I mean there's not that much remaining of that anymore.
- 28:14Dayna Roselli: No there isn't that's the thing and yeah in the world of social media and Instagram and all that you gotta have something to bring people to even just get a picture and then hope they walk through the front door right exactly I mean that's why we did the murals on the building I don't know if you guys have seen the three big murals we did but that was all driven by social media and engagement online and it was crazy.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Each of those artists posted their pictures and multiple times and people just went crazy for it.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: They people want to stay in the hotels where they can see those murals.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: That's how that's how much people like that those artists and and follow them around.
- 28:44Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: But yeah you gotta have stuff with social media and pictures and whole tell that story.
- 28:49Sean McAllister: And is there anything I know that you know this whole COVID era has kind of derailed the travel and hospitality industry big time.
- 28:59Sean McAllister: But leading up to that were there were there trends that you were kind of looking at in in any new innovations within the industry that you think could pick up after things get back and travel resumes?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: You know it was it was what was crazy about it is just I remember sending out a to our bankers back in February saying not only are we growing by double digits as a percent, downtown as a whole is growing.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: And so it was sort of like let's not change anything guys let's just keep going because downtown was booming the plaza was doing the best it's ever done we had the best year we've ever had in 2019.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: So a lot of that new technology stuff I think that's what you're asking about sort of new technology we we were kind of nervous to go there just because one we didn't want to take away from what downtown is and that uh sort of old Vegas feeling and and so we did we did do some of that like electronic check-in but the truth is people didn't want to use it they still went to talk they still want to talk to somebody um we didn't we didn't go to like uh mobile phone uh keys and that stuff yet so some of that stuff is good and some of that we sort of felt like it takes away from the experience and and so we we we've we've sort of shied away from a lot of that new technology and try to just do the the basic things well um which was working really well for us.
- 30:15Dayna Roselli: Yeah I agree sometimes technology can be a bit much people do like the personal experience and you know if if you're coming and you're gonna spend your money on a vacation you want to be treated with a little personal touch.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Absolutely yeah yeah no I I agree with you I mean I I got a Tesla and it's like a computer in a car and when it breaks it's like your computer breaks you have to res you have to reset it.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness and uh and honestly it's there's no one to talk to it's just a computer company and here's the martinis oh look at that beautiful oh excellent gotta have a martini at Oscar this is a really really thank you very much pretty martini well made made by the best I know I need to take a picture of it hey tell us about your podcast we love to to cross promo you've got your own thing going on where what and uh how can people find yeah so we we um we really weren't you know I wasn't convinced that a hotel casino should be doing a podcast because you know you get a lot of uh information that people you might not want to share but I found it's been really good I found it's been really uh well received we've got a lot of good engagement on it um typically it's it's either my team here with myself talking about the property and what's going on or it's um we have a guest on uh it's called on the corner of Main Street which is uh sort of a dual meaning one we are physically on the corner of Main Street here and it's also a lyric from arguably the best song by the killers uh which begins on the corner of Main Street so we went with that um and and it's been great I think we've had 15 episodes and we've had a couple of guests anyone from Flavor Flav to you know Derek Stevens Joe Asher from William Hill and we just talk about the industry things going on we try to keep it relevant to the plaza people that sort of engage with us either at the plaza or competition or partners like William Hill how's the martini that was a note that was a nod of approval that was amazing.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: So good what is it I never yeah it's 2 p.m it's great day drinking could be so good uh perfect um so it's yeah it's called on the corner of Main Street and um we'll see where it goes you know we're 15 episodes in at the moment I'm enjoying it I I like sort of meeting people talking to them most of them are just friends anyway so we just have a chit chat uh this week we're having a guy called Ryan Growney who's the general manager at South Point.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Yep uh also become a good friend he beat me at golf this weekend uh but but a but a good guy and uh so we'll see how it goes we'll see where the podcast goes and yeah hopefully we'll have you guys on one day.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah I hope so reverse the tables and a few questions.
- 32:42Dayna Roselli: But it is fun to interview isn't it I we feel like we get so many different kinds of ideas from the podcast.
- 32:47Dayna Roselli: You learn new things that you didn't know or you know all sorts of stuff.
- 32:51Dayna Roselli: It really brings out a lot of information.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Well and and and just speaking personally I never really listened to them but now I found a couple of uh uh what do you call them not commentators but hosts that I enjoy listening to myself and it's kind of where I go to for news source now and uh more than audio books or books I just do podcasts and so I'm enjoying them it's opened my eyes to how big they are right with with other people.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah I I think it's fun.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: I enjoy it and I we're the only hotel casino I'm aware of that's actively doing one uh sort of with our brand and um I think we had we had the guy from Vital Vegas come and join us and and he said more hotel casinos should do this and and get the word out.
- 33:29Dayna Roselli: Right, right yeah about what they've got going on.
- 33:31Dayna Roselli: Well that's a thing you know there's a lot of gaming podcasts out there and that focus just on one thing but if you can you know have a lot of different topics or be able to talk about anything whether it's travel, resorts, gaming, sports betting, you name it.
- 33:44Dayna Roselli: It's kind of cool.
- 33:44Dayna Roselli: And to have you being the CEO of a of a casino and hotel it's a big deal.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah I I enjoy it.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: I enjoy it like I said we right now you're not able to do many meetings.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: You know we we try to not have more than 10 to 15 minute meetings because if you somebody then tests positive for coronavirus everybody has to quarantine.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: So we're keeping our meeting times with as long as you're not close to each other like we're keeping a distance but um we're trying to it's hard to have meetings it's hard to plan so it's giving us some extra things to to keep us busy as well.
- 34:12Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: It's fun.
- 34:13Dayna Roselli: And I wait before we go what are some of your favorite things about Las Vegas?
- 34:16Dayna Roselli: I know I mean you haven't lived here your entire life so what what are some of your favorites?
- 34:21Dayna Roselli: Yeah that's long that's like life we're 15 years like a that's like a lifer in in in Vegas terms.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Well obviously I'm biased but downtown and the and specifically the plaza are my favorite places I spend a lot of time here.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: And I don't think I do a day's work when I come here.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: I love being here I love being with the team here it's it's I'm very lucky in that regard.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: But having now had uh three kids in the last four years it's really it's it's a great town for kids.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: I don't think people realize how much there is to do with with kids um so I've taken up uh golf um which I didn't do a few months ago but I I pre pre-COVID I think it's hard to beat Vegas in terms of entertainment I mean there's always something going on every weekend you could go to a show a fight uh a concert so the entertainment's the best the food's the best the weather's great for maybe August.
- 35:16Sean McAllister: Yeah um so uh it's a tough place to be I love living here it is I love it and uh probably wouldn't change it for anywhere we're we're looking forward to the the big 50th bash next year and and we won't be strangers we'll come back and we'll come back and have a steak and hopefully Oscar will be in the house too absolutely he's here in normal times two two to three times a week so we'll we'll all get together.
- 35:39Dayna Roselli: Right he's great we had him on the podcast too and you know his mind is sharp he's got stories for days so if anyone gets to meet him and chat with him it's always an honor.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah he's he's uh he's a special guy and we do a thing I don't know if you guys you guys haven't been to that either I if we ever get back to it we do a thing called the dinner series.
- 35:55Dayna Roselli: Yes I have been to one of those with John Katzlamides.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Oh okay okay with John where Oscar sits down and talks for an hour about a subject that usually we'll discuss beforehand and he just tells stories that he it's unbelievable the stories that guy has.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: I mean it's it's pretty cool.
- 36:09Dayna Roselli: Yeah it's worth it certainly there's no predicting anything that'll come out of his mouth that's for sure that's true Jonathan thanks so much for joining us and and welcoming us in our martini is amazing by the way extra dirty and two olives love it.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Well thank you guys for having me join you appreciate it.
- 36:28Dayna Roselli: Stay with us we're back for Dana and Sean Secret Tips and uh something that's not so secret anymore.
- 36:46Dayna Roselli: It's getting out there more it's been open for I'd say about a year is the front yard at Ellis Island and I know you wanted to talk about this Sean because you keep seeing people on Twitter and Instagram watching the Golden Knights games there.
- 36:57Sean McAllister: Yeah this has been a it's become a really hot spot to watch the games now that the Golden Knights are in the the Stanley Cup playoffs and hockey is happening again.
- 37:08Sean McAllister: Sports are happening again and the front yard is really buzzing and I I see it every time that I drive down to the strip it's a a new addition to the front of Ellis Island which sits a block or two off of Las Vegas Boulevard um really fun little casino and now this is a great addition um in really kind of big and open space.
- 37:34Dayna Roselli: Yeah it is it's like two floors so it's really like tall you know so you can sit up top or you can sit at the bottom and that makes it just I don't know feel really open which is which is good and which I think a lot of people are trying to kind of do right now is make sure that it's airy and everyone's separated and there's lots of room to breathe and all that kind of thing.
- 37:54Dayna Roselli: And so this has been super popular.
- 37:56Dayna Roselli: The food is good.
- 37:56Dayna Roselli: I I did stop there uh once for dinner and a few months ago or well I before this whole thing I don't even know what month we're in whatever it's been six months since we started the whole COVID thing.
- 38:07Dayna Roselli: So yeah it was before that so uh but the food was delicious.
- 38:12Dayna Roselli: They had us try all sorts of different stuff the pizza was great so um people seem to be really be embracing it and you know there's a lot of things that haven't reopened first of all our bars can't be open right now so folks can't watch the game and just have a drink it has to be a place that serves food and then Legasi Stadium where we used to record our podcast that hasn't uh opened and they've decided not to reopen it.
- 38:34Dayna Roselli: So there's not a lot of places to watch games.
- 38:36Sean McAllister: No so you know if you are coming to town um keep the front yard at Ellis Island uh top of mind that could be a a good option as you're trying to get out and enjoy what Las Vegas has to offer.
- 38:50Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 38:51Dayna Roselli: Yeah we love talking about some of our our favorite things or things that we're noticing.
- 38:54Dayna Roselli: So next week again we mentioned the Lake of Dreams is being revamped at the win and we're excited to check it out and we're also gonna be talking with uh the director of entertainment over there at the win so look forward to catching up on that property next week here on Vegas Reveal but for now we're gonna say goodbye to the mall traveling through the night's cold
