- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Finding Emily trailer review, the rom com we've been waiting for.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: What happens when you meet the girl of your dreams?
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: She gives you her phone number, and one number is missing.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Do you accept the message from the universe and move on?
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Or do you contact all 318 women named Emily at her university?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Modern Romance, ladies and gentlemen, where one innocent mistake can turn you into a viral sensation.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: A campus mystery and possibly the most wanted man on social media.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Today we're breaking down the trailer for Finding Emily, a new British romantic comedy directed by Alicia McDonald and starring Nguri Rice, Spike Fern, and Minnie Driver.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I have to say this trailer surprised me because on the surface, finding Emily looks like a sweet and simple romantic comedy.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But underneath all, the flirting, awkward messages, and university chaos, the movie seems to be asking a much bigger question.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Is chasing someone romantic or just a little bit crazy?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Finding Emily follows Owen, played by Spike Fern.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: He's a young musician and a serious believer in love.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: During a night out, Owen meets a girl named Emily.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: She's funny, smart, beautiful, and wearing fairy wings.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Which is either extremely romantic or a giant warning sign, depending on your dating history.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: They connect, they talk, the chemistry is there before they separate.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Emily puts her number into Owen's phone.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There's only one problem.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: The number is missing a digit.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Owen tries to contact her, but the number does not work.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Most people would probably feel disappointed, complain to their friends for three days, and then start scrolling through dating apps again.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: But Owen is not most people.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: He decides that he's going to find Emily.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: This man does not just believe in love, he treats love like a full-time investigation.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Owen starts putting up posters around university.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: He searches the campus.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Then he meets another Emily played by Anguri Rice.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: But this is not the Emily he's looking for.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: This Emily is a psychology student, appears to have a very different opinion about romance.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Owen believes love is magical.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: She believes love may be a form of temporary insanity.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: That's where the trailer becomes much more interesting.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: The two of them make a deal.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Psychology student Emily will help Owen find his mystery woman.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: In return, she gets to study Owen and use his romantic behavior as part of her academic work.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So Owen thinks he's living inside a great love story.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Emily thinks she's watching a human experiment.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: That's a great setup because the comedy comes from two people looking at the same situation in completely different ways.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Owen sees destiny, Emily sees data.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Owen hears wedding bells.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Emily is probably already writing the conclusion to her paper.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: The search quickly grows out of control.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Owen sends a message to all 318 students named Emily at the university.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And instead of quietly finding one woman, he creates a campus-wide Emily convention.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: The messages spread, people begin discussing his search, students take sides, social media joins the investigation, and Owen becomes known as Email Guy.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Some people think he's a true romantic, other people think he's creepy, and that part feels very real.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Just hold on a sec.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And before we continue, if you enjoy the Gilbert K Show and want to help support the podcast, you can visit the support page linked in the episode description below.

- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I truly appreciate your being part of the show.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Now let's get back into it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Twenty years ago, the story might have been about putting posters around town or calling every Emily in the phone book.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Today, one email can turn you into a hero, a villain, a meme, and a hashtag before lunchtime.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: The trailer seems to understand how quickly social media can change a private moment into a public event.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Everybody watches, everybody comments, and everybody believes their opinion is the correct one.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Poor Owen just trying to find a girl, suddenly, the entire internet is analyzing his behavior like he's the subject of a true crime documentary.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: That modern twist is one of the strongest parts of this finding Emily trailer.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The movie feels romantic, but also making fun of the way we talk about dating today.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If you make a big romantic gesture, some people will call it beautiful.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Other people will tell you to stop immediately and speak to a loyal.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: There is apparently no middle ground anymore.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about Spike Fern as Owen, many viewers will recognize him from Alien Romulus, but this role gives him a completely different energy.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Instead of running from terrifying creatures in space, he's running around Manchester looking for a missing phone number digit.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: To be fair, both situations look stressful.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Fern gives Owen a very awkward and innocent charm.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: He does not appear confident or smooth.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: He looks like a young man who truly believes he has found someone special and cannot accept that the story might already be over.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: That makes him easy to support even when his plan becomes completely ridiculous.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: The important thing is that Owen does not seem fake.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: He's not trying to become famous, he's not creating a romantic search for clicks.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He appears to genuinely care.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: That sincerity could make the character work.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And Guri Rice plays the other, Emily, the psychology student, agrees to help him.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Rice has appeared in the Spider-Man films, Mayor of East Town, The Last Thing He Told Me and the 2024 Mean Girls movie.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: She's very good at playing smart characters who seem calm on the outside while something more complicated is happening underneath.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: In this trailer, her Emily appears, controlled, focused, and is very skeptical about love.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: But come on, we all know how romantic comedies work.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: When a person spends the entire movie explaining why love is not real, that person is usually about five scenes away from falling in love.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: The trailer does not try very hard to hide where this relationship may be going.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Own is searching for one Emily while slowly becoming closer to another Emily.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Is it predictable?
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: But predictable does not always mean bad.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: We do not watch, we do not watch every romantic comedy because we have no idea what might happen.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: We watch because we want to enjoy how it happens.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: The success of finding Emily will depend on the chemistry between Anguri Rice and Spike Fern.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Based on the trailer, I think the chemistry is there.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: The characters tease each other, they disagree, they challenge each other's ideas, and most importantly, they look comfortable together.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Owen brings emotion into Emily's very organized world, while Emily forces Owen to think about whether he's chasing a real person or just an idea he created after one perfect night.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And this is where the story could have more emotional depth than the trailer first suggests.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe Owen is not really searching for Emily, maybe he's searching for proof that the kind of love he believes is still exists.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And that's where the story could have more emotional depth than the trailer first suggests.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe Ow is not really searching for Emily.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe he's searching for proof that the kind of love he believes still exists.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And maybe psychology student Emily is not trying to prove that love is madness.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Maybe she's trying to protect herself from getting hurt again.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Now, this is the movie I want to see.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: The trailer also introduces Mini Driver as the university dean.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And whenever Mini Driver appears in a British romantic comedy, I immediately feel like we're in safe hands.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: She brings authority, humor, and that look adults give you, young people, when they're creating a huge problem but still believe everything is going perfectly.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Her character seems caught in the middle of the growing campus circus.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: She has to deal with the Owen, the Emily's, the media attention, and probably hundreds of emails from angry parents.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Good luck, Dean Watkinson.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: What I also like is the Manchester setting.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Many classic British romantic comedies make London look like a magical place where everyone has a beautiful home, an interesting job, and limited time to fall in love.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Finding Emily gives us something different.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Manchester has a personality, it has music, busy streets, university life, and a rougher energy.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: The city does not appear to be sitting quietly in the background.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: It feels part of the story.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: The movie comes from working title films, the company connected to British romantic comedy favorites, such as Notting Hill, Bridget and Jones' Diary, Love Actually, and About Time.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: That is a serious romantic comedy family tree, but finding Emily is not simply copying those movies.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: The trailer takes the big emotional heart of an older British rom com and places it inside the word of group of emails, online judgment, viral videos, campus debates, and mother dating rules.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: It's old school romance meeting Gen Z anxiety, and somehow it looks like it may work.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Alicia McDonald is making her feature film, directing debut with Finding Emily.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: She previously worked on TV projects including Flack, The Outlaws, and Back to Life.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: What stands out in this trailer is the balance of humor and kindness.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: The characters make questionable decisions, but the movie does not appear interested in treating them like terrible people.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: They are confused, imperfect, and trying to understand what they want, which sounds like a lot nearly everyone who has ever dated.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: MacDonald has explained that compassion was important to her approach.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: She did not want the story to punish its characters simply because they are messy or make mistakes.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: I like the idea.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: There are already enough movies where everyone is cruel, miserable, or secretly planning a murder.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I just want two awkward people walking around Manchester, slowly realizing they might like each other.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Is that too much to ask?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Visually, the trailer looks bright, warm, and full of movement.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: It has crowded parties, university halls, outdoor searches, social media reactions, musical moments, and plenty of uncomfortable conversations.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: The pacing is quick and the trailer gives the movie a playful energy without making it look like it's childish.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: The music also appears to be an important part of the story because Owen is a musician.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: That gives the filmmakers another way to show his feelings without forcing him to explain everything in his speech.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And yes, because this is a romantic comedy, we can probably expect at least one emotional song written for someone named Emily.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: The good news is that if he gets the wrong Emily, the song still works.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I do have one concern.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: The trailer shows us quite a lot.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: We see the first meeting, the missing number, the search, the partnership, the social media explosion, and hints about the growing connection between Owen and the other Emily.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I hope the full movie still has few surprises left.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: The story could also become too sweet if it avoids asking whether Owen's search crosses a line.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: The best version of this movie will allow Owen to be romantic while also questioning some of his choices.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: It should not simply tell us that every giant romantic gesture is automatically wonderful.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Sometimes a mystic digit is destiny.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it means she forgot her digit, and sometimes it means you should probably take the hint.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Early reactions have praised the film's charm, humor, Manchester's setting, and the chemistry between Anguri Rice and Spike Fern.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Some viewers and critics have also said the story follows a familiar romantic comedy path.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: That sounds fair based on the trailer.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I did not expect Finding Emily to completely reinvent romance, but it may take a classic formula and make it feel current again.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: My final verdict on the Finding Emily trailer.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: I'm in.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: The concept is simple, the leads look charming, and the humor feels warm without becoming too silly.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: It also has something to say about social media, dating, public judgment, and our need to turn every relationship into a debate.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Most importantly, Finding Emily looks sincere, it's not embarrassed to be romantic, it's not trying to turn love into dark thriller, or a sad lesson about why relationships always fail.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: It appears to believe that even in a word of algorithm, public opinions, and hundreds of unread emails, two people can still meet at the wrong time for the wrong reason and somehow become right for each other.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Will Owen find the Emily from the party?
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Will he realize the Emily helping him might be the person he actually needs?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And will the other 317 Emilies ever recover from the most confusing group email in university history?
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: We'll have to watch the movie to find out.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Finding Emily is directed by Alicia McDonald and stars Anguri Rice Spoke Fern, Minnie Driver, and Sadie Soverall.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: The film arrives in US Theaters on August 28, 2026.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: But now I want to hear from you.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: What did you think of the Finding Emily trailer?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Does this look like the fresh romantic comedy we have been waiting for?
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Or do you already know exactly how the story will end?
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And here's the big question: if someone gave you a phone number with one digit missing, would you search for them or would you take the hint and go home?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Let me know in the comments below.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: That's all folks.
