- Ryan Footage: Welcome to first episode of run after cast ⁓ the college football podcast. I'm and I'm here with Aaron. RAC Aaron: Hail State. Ryan Footage: And I'm here with Taylor. Chandler Footage: What's going on, gentlemen? Ryan Footage: Alright Chandler, take it away. Chandler Footage: So for our first episode, we'll be talking about how we got into college football, what teams we support. Before we do all that, we're going to give you a little background of how we came up with RAC. So our names, Ryan, Aaron Chandler, we wanted to play off of those initials. We wanted to come up with some kind of acronym that would be easy, but we can play off of to make more of a podcast flow to it. So we came up with run after cast instead of run after catch. So that was the gist of it RAC Aaron: So we got started with this idea because we all hang out at the gym a lot, lifting weights. And most of the time what we're talking about is college football. We all sat down and said, let's talking about it on mic. So here we are ⁓ rack. What qualifications might we have to talk about college ball? None really, but we do love the sport and we wanted to create a show where we get to talk about what we saw in the games, what excites us, what we're looking forward to following our teams through the season and somebody that experience with us. Let us see all the ups, the downs, the victory, the crushing heartbreak when you get knocked out of playoff contention every year as a Mississippi State fan. no, We also wanted to talk about things like rule changes and things that evolve college football that does separate it from the NFL that anybody listening to this with that interest in college football is going to know what we're talking about that ever changing landscape every season so different from the last we're here to share it with you. to give you a little more perspective of what college football means to us, we did want to go through and talk about our journeys into college football, the teams we support, as you can probably already tell if you're watching the video of this, but Teal, why don't we get you started with your into college football. Ryan Footage: All right, well, you know ever since I was born, you know, I was just kind of born into sports so I Started, you know Even before that really my my dad is biggest Auburn fan you will ever meet Anyone you talk to you like he likes Auburn. He loves Diet Coke, you know two things in life RAC Aaron: you Ryan Footage: So, he went there back when Bo Jackson was there mid eighties and he did not miss a home game for the next 15 ish years until they had my sister pretty much, which is pretty crazy. Yeah. But even then, like when I was a little kid, my sister was a little kid, we were going to all the football games all the time, but even more than that, like I was playing football. I remember one year it's like, RAC Aaron: That's crazy. Ryan Footage: You had to have be a certain age to play football. And I was over there playing soccer and I saw the football kids going out on the field. I'm like, I don't want to be doing this. I want to go over there and play football with them, you know? But I mean, Auburn's just a huge part of it because my entire life, every single game we go to all the home games. I go to all the iron bowls that are at home. Everything. I was at the 2013 kick six. I was at the 2017 one where Jared Stidham beat him. I was at the 2019 one where. Bo Nicks beat them, So I was at all of them. The kick six one is good. I think that specifically is one of my biggest memories as a football fan. Cause when you're a kid, you remember the football games, but you're going, you don't really know what's happening. And I wish I just didn't take those moments for granted, you know? Cause now that I'm looking back at it, we're struggling now, but we were very historic football RAC Aaron: You haha Ryan Footage: program. We did. We had a lot of wins in the past. We've a lot of great coaches, a lot of stretches, but. Nowadays, you know these last five or so years ever since we got Brian Harson, it hasn't been so good, you RAC Aaron: Now, I do have to ask as a late college convert that I'll get into here in a few minutes with Auburn. Auburn's one that I always found confusing because as I watched and started to get like the landscape, it's Auburn Tigers. You won't stop talking about Eagles. At this point, I've always wondered why not just get rid of the Tiger bit. Just, just switch to the Auburn War Eagles ⁓ and dump the You don't have to be the third known Tiger in the SEC anymore. Chandler Footage: Ha Ryan Footage: We're the Tigers, man, you know? We historically split games with LSU too, so, you know, people don't want to have that conversation. But you know why there's the eagle, right? RAC Aaron: Yeah. all I know is they fly it out and then the announcers go, that's that Eagle that they talk about all the time. And then that's it. So fill me in, give me the backstory. Ryan Footage: Okay. So pretty much we're the Auburn Tigers and our, mascot's a tiger, but back, we have the oldest rivalry in the South with Georgia. So back during the civil war right after whatever, there was this guy who was an Auburn fan and he had an Eagle and we were playing Georgia and he brought it because it was a war Eagle they had in the war. Cause they'd use it to like scout and stuff, I guess. So he had it the game and it started circling the field while they're playing Georgia and then we came back and beat Georgia. So that's just been a big tradition that we have this eagle that's our war eagle, but we really are the Tigers, RAC Aaron: it was just one that I know for those first couple seasons, I'd be like, ⁓ yeah, you mean the Auburn Eagles. And then my wife would correct me be like, no, they're the Tigers. was like, but Ellis used the Tigers. And she's like, yeah, so was Missouri. So, and I mean, you know, those in glass houses, the second known Bulldogs ⁓ of the but. Ryan Footage: Yeah, yeah. And Clemson. Yeah. Mm-hmm Chandler Footage: Yeah, but Missouri is like over there. know, they're LSU Auburn are really the Tigers. RAC Aaron: Yeah. the fringes. Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah. Yeah, but hi. I'm in Missouri had that he's been running back last year. What's his name? Hardy? Yeah. Chandler Footage: I don't think you went to New York, but that's another conversation. Ryan Footage: Yeah, but that's pretty much it. know, big Auburn fan. I mean, I played football my whole life too. So it's not just the Auburn football. Like I'm just a fan of Auburn football, but my whole childhood played football. played through middle school. I pretty much played all the way into high school until I had knee surgery. But then that even more kind of just escalated my love into football. I couldn't play it, I would just watch it all the time and we'd go to all the games and stuff. So I was just huge into football. And me and Chandler now, it's all we talk about, even with you, like all we talk about is college football. RAC Aaron: Yeah So Chandler, what's your backstory? Chandler Footage: So mine, unfortunately, it's going to sound, you know, bandwagon-esque, but I was not a day one out of the womb, diehard Buckeye fan. ⁓ out of the family. They're all from Ohio. He's on the northern part of Ohio. My cousins went to Ohio State. So I always had the Cleveland sports on. I had the Browns on, unfortunately. I had the Indians when they were the Indians. then course, Ohio State. But I played baseball all through my youth. RAC Aaron: you Chandler Footage: baseball and basketball in middle school, and then just baseball in high school. And then it wasn't until after high school really, when I got into my freshman year of college ⁓ roommate who happens to be one of the other Tiger fans, LSU Tiger fan, he decided, you know, we should go to Columbus because he'd never been there. ⁓ And was where my love kickstarted. I dove into the rosters. dove into the schematics. I dove into the coaches, the podcasts, the videos. I got the, got the bug. through and through and it hasn't slowed down since. But we went to our first game. I know I saw Kenneth Walker there and he was like the Heisman front runner and then he had a whole like, I don't know, seven yards the whole game and Ohio State won like 56 to seven and that was one of the best first games I could go to. But since then, I mean, been to a ton of up and down games, the drought of the Michigan losses ⁓ years in a row. But you know, went to the national championship, got to see that. So. RAC Aaron: you Chandler Footage: Very fortunate for that, but me being an Ohio State fan is through and through a lot easier than I'm sure Mississippi State fans would be. I, you know, my condolences go out to you, But with that being said, Aaron, take it away. Let's hear your backstory. RAC Aaron: It's a rough life. A rough life. So a married into college football person. My background as a kid was I come from a Texas A ⁓ household. ⁓ college football did feel very culty to me. They are a strange bunch of people to follow football. They love it. They care about it. I have met many of these fans, including my own family that have children named after Kyle Field and ⁓ It is a fun group, but I never really. Heard that much about watching football. was more into the wrestling boxing scene as a kid, but we did live in the air force academy. So I did go see the air force academy games, which is not the most exciting football in the world out there, but it was neat. So after graduating, I went to college at VCU, which does not have a football team. We have a basketball team that sometimes make it to the mid brackets of March Madness. And that's it. I that they had a big run in like 2012 or something somewhere 2010 ish somewhere in that area. But it wasn't until I got married, my wife went to Mississippi State, huge Mississippi State fan. ⁓ And at she was like, I don't really care about college football that much. You know, I just do it so I could talk to people at work, but The second game coverage starts on a Saturday till the last West coast game ends. ⁓ That TV is on and are plays where she can't watch the TV. She's got to cover her head. So it just kind of became something that infected her household. Our kids started to fall in love with football. ⁓ I started paying attention so could have conversations about it. ⁓ Then I realized like I getting really excited. I and like freaking out at the games, watching big plays, all of this through the lens of Mississippi State fan, because I just didn't know any better. I didn't know that you could root for a good team. but I've been to a couple of Mississippi State fit games. Now I've had a great time at everyone I go to the cowbells. I can admit have to be one of the most annoying things. If you're from a different fan base, if are a Mississippi State fan, get your cowbell and clang it. Cause it is a great time in the stadium. Ryan Footage: Yeah, college football games might be the most exciting thing ever. they're so entertaining. RAC Aaron: It's, it is hard to match that level of everybody vibing the same way. Like from the excitement pregame tailgating, quite beats it. It's, is a great time to get out and make a day of it. think anybody listening here probably made it to a game. They know exactly what we're talking about. The friends you make, like the game friends, ⁓ people buy beers for and have beers brought to you. It's great. Chandler Footage: 100%. I think you can tell a good fandom and good fan base based off of going to the games, whether it be an 11 o'clock kick. Unfortunately, we get a lot of those, ⁓ or, know, your night game, your three 30 slot, whatever it is, seeing the crowd get up the same way throughout all those games for a nobody game or a top 10 matchup, it's electric. And it doesn't matter where you're sitting in the stadium, the atmosphere is nuts. mean, it, it, RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: Beats watching on the couch hands down. RAC Aaron: every time like I was definitely one of those people at the beginning I was like why would you pay a couple hundred bucks to go out when you can like be right there for the action on the TV and then I went to a couple like games as an adult and I was like this is incredible this is so much fun it's like Disney World yeah Chandler Footage: It almost disconnects you from the world and just puts you in this little bubble of where everybody around you is just as crazy as you are and has that same energy and love for the team you're there for. And it just, it's amazing. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And I think it's that extra little bit too, when both teams have chill fan bases, where it's like, you can hang out with each other tailgating and you can talk trash, but at the same time, you know, have food and hang out, you know, all except for Rivalry Week. And I think we can all agree that Rival, you the worst their season, every season. Yeah. Chandler Footage: Exactly. 100%. Lose every game. Ryan Footage: Dude, I'm in a weird scenario where like Auburn, like they pretty much say every single team is a rivalry. We're rivals to LSU, we're rivals to Florida, we're rivals to Georgia, we're rivals to Alabama. So every single week we have like a decent team we're playing. It's a, it's a rivalry game. Quote unquote. RAC Aaron: Yeah. yeah. ⁓ I would say that's the curse of a successful program because we have won. The only one we care about is Ole Miss and the Bowl's great bowl game. Well, a great rivalry game. Chandler Footage: It means more in the SEC. Always remember that. Ryan Footage: ⁓ it does. It does. does. Yeah. mean, we're a weird one though. Cause like, we're always just been like a scrappy team. We've always been pretty good. We historically win eight, nine games a season until recently, but we're always just out there causing chaos. during urban Meyer time at Florida, we're beating them every year, even though they're supposed to be the best team ever during the Nick Saban era, we beat them every other year. It's just, we're out there causing chaos. We might not win the national championship every year, but we're a dangerous team. a great fan base. RAC Aaron: Hey, you've won more than one and we've won zero, so. Ryan Footage: Yeah, apparently we've won. Chandler Footage: Hey, it's going around though. can, yeah, you can claim whatever you want. So just go through the years and just start claiming them. Put them on the, put them on the stadium. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, apparently we've won nine, so. Chandler Footage: Powerhouse. Ryan Footage: Yeah. Yeah. RAC Aaron: A blue blood program. Chandler Footage: Yeah. Ryan Footage: Mm-hmm. I Chandler, how was your experience at the Ohio State National Championship? You got to be a part of that. Chandler Footage: Yeah, I had a, the luxury of going, my cousins got us tickets. They entered the raffle early. ⁓ she reached out to me and was like, Hey, I got these tickets for the national championship secured. And this was the first week of the playoffs. So I was like, man, this is way too early. Like they have to get through three more games. This is just the biggest jinx in the world. They're not going to make it. She was like, okay, well, just in case they do, I booked the hotel. It's like, awesome. Yeah. So they're definitely not going now. RAC Aaron: ⁓ Chandler Footage: so fast forward, we got there. that was the second time I've been to Mercedes Benz. First time was the time they played Georgia in the semifinals, midnight, New Year's Eve. Marvin Harrison Jr. gets rocked in the back of the end zone. No targeting. It's neither here nor there. then they go through, they kick the field goal. NoahRuggles misses it because he does miss all kicks outside of 20 yards. But he went through, got redemption. Ryan Day came back into Mercedes-Benz, got the job done. Electric atmosphere is loud the whole time. There's a stretch where they're winning by two scores, got it close, great house. Had a great game, no pun intended. Got him back into it. And then that's all she wrote. on it. So. Talk to me about your Kick6 experience. How old were you? How was it? Ryan Footage: Well, it was probably one of the best things I've ever seen, first of all. so it was November 30th, 2013. So I was, I was nine years old or something. You know, you you remember stuff as a kid, but that's like, I really remember that me and my dad were at the top. Oh, it's a joke. Have you seen the Hugh Fries interview? Chandler Footage: Yeah. There we go. Prime age. Yes. Ryan Footage: where he's talking about some random, family drove across the country and spent all their money to sit at the top of the stand. That was us. We were sitting up there. We're the very top nosebleeds up there with my dad's like old college friends and stuff. the whole game was amazing. That was just a great game. That was like Adrian McCarran, TJ yelled in those types of guys. I mean, they were so good. Chandler Footage: Yes. Yes. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: You know, and we were good that year. We went to national championship obviously, but the week before. are you? Yeah. Yeah. But not only did that happen the week before my dad was at the miracle of Jordan hair. tipped catch against Georgia. My dad was there. And then the next week, I don't know why I wasn't there. I don't know. I didn't come with him next week. I was like, I gotta go. We're doing so good this season. Went there. The kick six happens. Chandler Footage: Obviously. RAC Aaron: Obviously. Yeah. Ryan Footage: So we're all sitting up there and their kicker was kind of struggling all day. You know, you gotta love it though. We hate Alabama. So he kicks it. It's short. Chris Davis gets it. And right where he starts tip toeing down the sideline, my dad picks me up and he's jumping up and down, spinning me in circles at the top of the thing. And we all just start running down the stairs to go get on the field. And we took like a little piece of the bush. Chandler Footage: knowing you're dead, can just imagine that happening. it's the yeah, it's fantastic. Ryan Footage: He is up and down, giddy, screaming, spinning me in the circle right next to like the concrete wall at the top of the stage. It was, yeah, it was awesome, dude. Chandler Footage: Just drop you over. He, he is without a doubt the most diehard Auburn fan I've ever met in my life. And I just applaud him for being it. Not because, you know, it's Auburn, but just how diehard he is. Every podcast, every video, every coach's interview, everything. It's incredible. RAC Aaron: Hahaha Ryan Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: It that to me is just a crazy like being able to be that deep into your team. Then to be at the game where I mean, we can all agree that the kick six is up there as one of the greatest plays that's ever happened. Like, you know, I'm sure there are ones that top it. But when I do think of like amazing swing last moment, it just, doesn't get any more like cinematic. If you were making a football movie, that's us play you do. Ryan Footage: Yeah. Chandler Footage: ⁓ yeah. RAC Aaron: and then to be there for your team and watch them do it. That's crazy. Chandler Footage: And of course, you know, the nighttime Jordan hair atmosphere, like that's, that's the time it's going to happen to. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, this is the loudest stadium I've ever heard. But like, I know I was there even before that when I was younger, my whole life we were in it. But how can you not see that as a young kid and just like fall in love with something like that? You know, you'll never top it. You're just getting so attached to it. And you know, my dad, I mean, he kind of indoctrinated me a little toward Auburn football, like, how could you not just Chandler Footage: 100%. Ryan Footage: be in love with like the game after that, the stuff like that happens. And that's what made college football so good is that stuff like that happens not all the time, but like NFL seems so dry, but just the, the electricity behind the college football, the passion, the love behind college football is just different. The energy in the stadium. It's so different plays like that happen. Chandler Footage: And it makes it feel like you were a part of that play to being there. Like you go through and you recap it in your mind, like, and you were like plugged in to that atmosphere. So like that will always be a piece of you. And like you said, that's what makes college football so great because there's that authenticity throughout the whole sport that like you, you have those pieces of moments throughout the every single season of your lifetime. And it's like, you can just in your head, close your eyes and just plug yourself right back in there and you can just watch the whole thing. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: It's fantastic. RAC Aaron: Well, and you have that like special, like, I do watch a lot of NFL games, to me it's there's, you're watching people at the highest point in their careers playing consistently where college, I love that aspect of watching a young team develop ⁓ and over again. Like there's always somebody coming up. You see mistakes happen on the field that, you know, you normally don't see at the higher level, which isn't an issue. ⁓ It's just a young player. And I think that makes it feel real. It makes it feel. ⁓ when you see things like that, you see broken coverage. That's obviously something that it's like, ⁓ he's a freshman. He's going to grow into it. You see guys get bigger. You see them get tougher. And you see a senior in those last games that they're going to play that you've been watching since they're a freshman. And then they've turned into a monster out there and you're like, this is this is great. It's like following a rookie in the NFL for their first couple seasons. You just get that energy. Chandler Footage: sure. Ryan Footage: Yeah, I mean, and that's what makes college football so great. You know, that's like the same thing I was saying. I love that aspect. Seeing them go through. It's a little different with the NIL kind of stuff and transfer portal now. But yeah, seeing them go through, seeing them grow up. And I love the raw fact that you're saying there that it does just add a little bit. Something else to the game that like the NFL, they seem professional when they're playing and it's not even like college is sloppy, but there is something else there. There's room for air. There's room for great plays. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And there's room for creativity too, where sometimes you'll see something that off the wall, something that's like, this is, ⁓ wouldn't see that at the highest level because a disciplined team wouldn't fall for it. So a young team might though. And always fun. Ryan Footage: And that's what makes it exciting. Yeah, well, Aaron, do you have any really exciting college football stories or? RAC Aaron: think we all know the answer to this as a Mississippi State fan. No. But I have gone, I've had a great time every time I go. I've seen them win in person, which is a great vibe. And I do think, ⁓ do think it's a good stadium. I think they've got a good crowd. You everybody's everybody, whether they're happy, sad, we win, we lose, ⁓ you the cowbell. So ⁓ Ryan Footage: Mm-hmm. Chandler Footage: So Mississippi State pays their fans to come to the games, correct? Like it's not like a year paying kind of thing. It's a, they pay you. RAC Aaron: I wish. The tickets could be cheaper for how we play, but no, no. Yeah, yeah. You show up knowing that it's, you're, you're hoping for a competitive game. Ryan Footage: Yeah, that's a real fan base there though, you know, yeah, you got people like Chandler Footage: Absolutely. Ryan Footage: Yeah, but dude, I've been there last like five years. You know, I've been there. RAC Aaron: Oh yeah. Oh yeah. You've been in the dumpster with us, you know, you, you've, you've been sorting the trash like we have, but you didn't have Mike leach to walk you through it. So I will say I did, I did spend that, that time with Mike leach as the coach. And I was like, this is perfect. He's a great head coach from Mississippi state. Cause we knew we weren't going to be the top. weren't even going to sec. championship game. Like we only care to win the egg bowl and that's it. Ryan Footage: Mm-hmm, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. RAC Aaron: And that's a good feeling, but Leech made it fun. It was, it was hard to lose them. Ryan Footage: Yeah, I loved him. He's hilarious. You know? Yeah, we have Hugh Freeze over here, our coach. A lot of ex-elites. Yeah, Freeze warning. I do love that. That was a great little thing that we had there. We had the Freeze warnings. We can't all be like Chandler over here, just went every year, so. RAC Aaron: Yo, yeah. Chandler Footage: Freeze warning. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: So we talked about how we kind of established ourselves. We talked about how we got into our teams. We talked about all the backstory of this podcast and it's kind of set a foundation for you guys. So now let's dig into a of our teams ⁓ season, how we thought it went, how we expected it to go. And we'll go from there. So Ryan, I would love for you to give me a spiel on how Auburn played last year based off of what you thought was going to happen. Let's hear it. The floor is yours now. RAC Aaron: Yeah. How did Auburn play last year? Yeah. Ryan Footage: Okay. I'm going to seem like a brainwashed, I'm going to see you like a brainwashed Auburn guy going into last season. I have the most hope I've had since the 2019 season where we had Gus Boson. I had so much hope. ⁓ was telling Chandler every day we winning nine games. We're winning 10 games. I was like bad year. win nine games. I was dude. RAC Aaron: how'd that work out for you? It's a great prediction. Chandler Footage: phenomenal. still working. They're going to add next year and last year combined. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: In a way, in a way we won nine. Okay. Okay. I gotta say this was the most rigged year I've ever seen. We start, we start off. First of all, Hugh Freeze might be the best recruiter I have ever seen. We had the stack roster going to last year. It took them two or three years to develop that roster. Cause even like the year before we had JarQuest Hunter. We had Keondra Lambert Smith. But we had Peyton Thorn who unfortunately I'm wearing a number one Jersey. This is not a Peyton Thorn Jersey by the way. But Peyton Thorn like he would have little glimpses where he would do good. He'd put up good stats, but he would just make critical mistakes at the worst time and it would sell us the game. And I know it's not just his fault. You have a whole game. But going into last year, there was a lot of hype for getting Jackson Arnold. I was like, this guy's not that great. He hasn't thrown the ball historically. He's a big running quarterback. RAC Aaron: You Ryan Footage: We had Ashton Daniels who I was like, this guy sucks. He went to Stanford, did nothing. And then we had Deuce Knight, who Deuce Knight is supposed to be the next Michael Vick where he's left-handed. He's from Mississippi. He's the last five star rated quarterback out of Mississippi since another guy that we got who also went to Auburn like in 30 years ago or something. So he was supposed to be our guy, but Hugh Friesman, he does not know how to. get quarterbacks, but his whole thing, they talk about how he's good at seeing quarterbacks and he's good at developing quarterbacks. And that's the one thing I think they got wrong the whole time he was there. But going into last year, yeah, he's a great golfer. Unfortunately, that's the issue with this year is we had all the talent. We didn't have a great quarterback, but unfortunately, I'm not saying this, I feel bad for him, but he got cancer going into this year. So. Chandler Footage: Already he's a great golfer. Ryan Footage: He was having health problems and you could see that it was severely impacting our offensive performance because he has a significant role in our offensive play calling. So our first game was at Baylor and our whole thing, we have Cam Coleman. We have these great running backs, you have Jeremiah Cobb, it's can, can, uh, not paint might as well be paint and thorn. Can Jackson Arnold throw? You know, the whole time I was trying to see, and he ran the ball a lot. threw one ball to Cam Coleman. And it's kind of like we just got through the Baylor game. We just kind of came out unscathed. Weren't trying to open it up. And that was kind of the story for the first three, four weeks. Me and Chandler even went to the Ball State game where everything we're doing is just the same thing every game. We're running five yard curls. We're running a go ball with Cabe Coleman every once in a while. We're running a jet sweep with Eric Singleton, our other receiver that we got from Georgia Tech. But our lineup was stacked going into last year. We had all these good guys come in, all these four or five star guys we haven't had in so long. But the issue was we get the Texas A &M game and that was the worst offensive performance I've ever seen. Our defense single-handedly kept us in that football game. We had a top three defense last year, in my opinion. We had an amazing defense. We didn't give up 24 points until the Georgia game. Not even the Georgia game, the Alabama game. But yeah, our offense couldn't get it done. We didn't have enough scheming, but Hugh Fries was trying to call the offensive plays and he had this stupid system that we didn't even realize till later that he would call certain situations. We had an offensive coordinator who we didn't use that called certain situations. And we had another guy who was like an analyst who called certain situations. So there was no flow to our offense. There was no rhythm to anything. But in my opinion, we really won eight games because RAC Aaron: ⁓ You're reading those, freeze articles cause ⁓ that sounds pretty similar. Chandler Footage: you Ryan Footage: Yes, yes, yes. Yeah. Cause I know we ended with five games, but the Oklahoma game, the first drive, had a scoop score fumble that they called an incomplete catch, even though he caught it, turned around, made a football move, switched hands and fumbled and we returned it. they didn't call that. So that was a 10 point swing. And later in the game, they an illegal thing where he pretended to go off the sideline. And stood there and they snapped the ball and they threw a touchdown to him wide open. And they came out and the SEC put out a statement after that. that is not legal. You cannot do that. And it shouldn't have counted. So right there were 17 points that we should have had on them. So we would have won that game. I can see the Texas state end game. Shouldn't have won that game. We didn't get it done. The only really touchdown we scored was 10 to 16. The only touchdown we score it was a. 16 to three or 13 to three. And one of our defensive players moved it pretty much from their five yard line and scooped it and got it all the way to the two. And then Jackson Arnold ran in for touchdown. then the week we played Kentucky, Hugh Frees, apparently that week, it came out later that that week leading up to the Kentucky game that he was negotiating with Auburn on how they could lower his buyout. So he intentionally lost that game. And that's a worse Chandler Footage: Hmph. Ryan Footage: football game I have ever seen. We did nothing the entire game. And then that was the 10th game. We did nothing the entire game. And it was because he, he made us lose on purpose. So there's two games. And then the Georgia game right before halftime, Jackson Arnold dove over the line, crossed the plane, the whole, his whole half of the torso, the whole balls in the end zone. And they call it a fumble. Chandler Footage: Was that the 10 to 3 game? It's a baseball score. Ryan Footage: And they gave George the bowl. So instead of being 17 nothing going to halftime, they gave George the bowl. So it's 10 to nothing in. RAC Aaron: I do remember that one. That one, that was a crazy play where it was like, they thought about it so long. It really looked like he did break the plane. Like I could see there was like a discussion about it in terms of where the ball came loose and Chandler Footage: Yeah. Well, that was ⁓ a prime example of like the commentators are like, ⁓ he clearly crossed. But then the ref came back and said he didn't. And then the commentators were like, ⁓ actually I completely understand what they're meaning. He, he never crossed. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Immediately backpedal on it. Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, but, then, yeah. And then right after that, those last minute and 45 seconds going into the second half were the longest. It took 25 minutes of real life time to go through a minute 45. Every play they reviewed something. They threw flags every play. It was ridiculous. They were trying to get them down there and score and they got them a field goal. So instead of 10, 10 or instead of 17 to nothing going to halftime, it was 10 to three. And that's a close game. RAC Aaron: Remember that one. Ryan Footage: We're not a good enough football team to make up that many points in a game. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. And I do think it's one of those things when we, when we do talk about those, you know, the coaches like, like Kirby smart. If you're up against them, it's one of the most frustrating things, but I give Kirby smart the most credit. He knows how to go out there, fight the refs for his team. ⁓ yeah. The, the timeout claps here a hundred percent. But if he's your coach, that's a great coach. Like that's a guy who's getting it, even though it might come off as the opponent. The cheap thing, but that's part of the game. That's part of being a coach. mean, you've got to fight the refs. Yeah, absolutely. Chandler Footage: He knows how to win football games. Ryan Footage: Yeah, he knows how to win full games. It makes me mad. I've seen so many Georgia games and he's out there. He's standing in the middle of the field talking to his players, yelling at the rest. You can't be on the field. He's just out there every single game, just yelling at the rest, crying about something that happened, but they, it works. They give it to them every time. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And that's what it's like, people in the NFL talk about like my homes and going laid out of bounds and things like that. And it's like, that's, ⁓ he can do right now. Like it is something that he can do and he's pulling it off and they, know, until they make a change, very smart. So you go to getting every inch ⁓ out of a to get a win. ⁓ And so I I do respect that. Like, even though when it's against you, You hate it. Yeah. There's nothing that's crazier than like after that game, you're like, that was nuts. I can't believe they gave that to them. But you know, you gotta be good to get it because they don't give it out a lot. The refs normally do not change their minds on things. Ryan Footage: Yeah, he'll get them to do it though. Sorry. I've been talking a lot. I'll wrap my piece up here. But yeah, my last little bit is right after we fired, he frees our whole thing's offensive play calling. We went into Vanderbilt and we had an offensive coordinator. We just gave him the play call. him call all the plays and you know, we put up a lot of points against Vanderbilt. We were giving the ball to our best player, Cam Coleman a lot. And even Ashton Daniels who ⁓ RAC Aaron: Mm-hmm. ⁓ no, no Ryan Footage: Was our backup originally, but he came into the Arkansas game, didn't really do anything. Came in ⁓ Kentucky game and did nothing. And then we go to, we go play Vanderbilt and he just went crazy, threw for 350 yards and it was good. So it's obviously not a talent issue, but it was a Hugh Freeze play calling issue. But that's kind of been the whole, the whole story of the three years he was there is that the other two years he kind of had more of a dynamic offense, but the players would make mistakes in. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: The real headland I would put for the whole freeze freeze era is that every single thing that could have gone wrong went wrong every single time. No matter what happened during the game, we have so many chances and we would just mess up any of them. We get one of those in every game and like we win that game, but it's ridiculous. Somehow all of them go wrong. And unfortunately I was at the iron bowl this year and that was a hard, hard watch. Lotta Risky calls there that you could have said go both ways. I had to see Ty Simpson, but he went through 400 yards. So he did terrible. That's good. ⁓ But you know, even with that, I was just excited to be there. There's nothing like Jordan hair stadium, me being in there, everyone's screaming. It's the loudest thing ever. And I love it. It's great. It's kind of like your Mississippi state stadium. It's loud every day, Chandler Footage: you RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah. ⁓ Every time. But no, that was something I did find it confusing through the Hugh Fries era of Auburn of it is like, sometimes you get those coaches that are so good behind the scenes. But then when we get on the field, and it's like when it gets to play calling, it was like Hugh Fries wouldn't dial back the game it needed to be dialed back. And as you were talking about with the Vanderbilt game, where we did see that where like the routes got simpler, the play calling became three yard plays instead of 15 yard plays. And the talent line that was there took advantage of We saw it ⁓ really come fruition. And I felt that Hugh Freeh's scheme just never dialed it back for the ⁓ adapt to the that he was running. Chandler Footage: I think truthfully with you freeze, ⁓ like Ryan said, he's great recruiter. mean, he had the, was it? The freeze for freeze five. was his, ⁓ he recruited, ⁓ think on paper, had a three wide receiver room going into last year ⁓ and. ⁓ Ryan Footage: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And the talent was there. I mean, like you could watch there was be those sparks every game where you're like, if they can get that under like flowing, like not only were your wide receivers fat, but they had good hands. It just was like a lot of those routes were like up over the middle like into the ⁓ of the yep. The linebacker core. And it was like, it was risky. Chandler Footage: 100%. I've heard curls. I think you could almost simplify it though, not really, but ⁓ were or miss. Yes. But he struck out twice in the transfer portal with quarterbacks. ⁓ And think if he has a competent quarterback and either one of those that you can scheme around and that's the key thing would be to scheme around them. Then he's fine. I mean, he has all the offensive weapons in the world and he have phenomenal defense. He was top five in defense for sure. Ryan Footage: Yeah, and that's what I'm saying, yeah. Chandler Footage: and they were top three in receiving corps or just offense in general when it was clicking. RAC Aaron: But it is something that it was like, would have liked to have seen them adapt into more of a like screen system to compensate. Like quit trying to force that deep ball pass game that wasn't consistent. Like it was risky. Like we saw a lot of mistakes happen there instead of doing the short yardage pass and just kind of like chipping out the yards, getting that timing and the experience built for it. But I think that's tough when you have a quarterback. If you don't necessarily have a quarterback that's running at that caliber of your receivers, them in and constantly getting them ⁓ bad positions. I that has a mental toll on a quarterback. Like you can get them in a hole that they don't recover from. know, like was, I think we've talked about it before, but like Spencer Radler ⁓ at ⁓ Carolina, he had pocket trouble, he was a talent as quarterback, but then he kept leaving clean pockets. Like it just instinctively, you just kind of roll out of a clean pocket. And then he was trying to throw on the move too much and all from that, bad season just getting schwacked all the time. Like you could just see him reacting to that. ⁓ you know, like they're young guys that takes a toll. Chandler Footage: Then he goes to the Saints and just bad to worse. It's just the same thing over again. Ryan Footage: Yeah, but I almost think we had a good thing in Jackson Arnold last year where Chandler is going to hate that idea. Everyone I talked to hates Jackson Arnold. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: I don't hate Jackson Arnold. I just think it was the quarterback coaching. I don't know. ⁓ think he was definitely ⁓ than a Peyton Thorn or at least had a higher upside than a Peyton Thorn, but he wasn't like a bone X. RAC Aaron: Yeah. But Bo Nix also struggled at Auburn. Ryan Footage: Yeah, but when we had Bo- Yeah, when we had Bo Nix, he was a young, undeveloped quarterback and you'd see those glimpses of talent and they'd come out, but then he couldn't keep it consistent for an entire game, which he went to Oregon, they honed it in. But Jackson Arnold, it's like, we were a super easy team to scheme against. Cause I mean, Hugh Freeze, he would run screens and stuff, but the issue was his play calling was so predictable every game. Cause there wasn't a flow to it. Chandler Footage: Yeah. RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah. Ryan Footage: It was like, I'm picking this play that guy's picking his favorite play. And I watched two games and me and showing me sitting there and we'll know exactly what player we're running out of certain formations. And we just didn't have enough variety of plays. we kept waiting until when we play a real team, we're going to bring it out and we would never bring it out. And. RAC Aaron: Yep. It felt like if I'm remembering the play calling correctly, it was like pass on first on second and then attempt to pass the yards again on third. And it was just like, ⁓ either your first down or it didn't. And most of the time it didn't. Ryan Footage: Yeah, that was, that was pretty much it. And a lot of the times even Hugh Freeze would, he would come in with a game plan. Like there was certain games he would go in a half time. Like what do you need to change? He said, we came in, we're going to run the ball. We need to start being able to run the ball. And we weren't able to run the ball for the whole first half. And he's just not making adjustments. There was no creativity in our route running. We were in five yard curls every play. So if you're a good team, you're going to run man coverage in the five yard curls. You're going to blitz everyone. So we can't run. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: And then you have Jackson Arnold standing there, not throwing the ball, because he looks down the field and every single person has a guy staying next to him. And then finally we go into the Georgia game and he says, get the ball out. So all they did at practice was like one, two, get the ball, one, two, get the ball out. And he won the Georgia game. He was throwing the ball. We went down and scored. He did good. But then we go to the Arkansas game and he's not allowed to get sacked. In a five-year curl, it's I have to throw this ball, one, two, I have to get the ball out. And someone just happened to finally after the entire year, jump it for a pick six, took him out immediately. So you have your coach coaching you to do a certain thing all year and it, it backfires on him, it's your fault. So he was just in a lose lose situation and Ashton Daniels did nothing for two games, but no one could thrive under that system. So I don't know who was actually better, but neither of them could thrive under that. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chandler Footage: Okay, Aaron, do you want to kick it off for your season recap from your point of view? RAC Aaron: I mean, mine's much shorter, much sadder. ⁓ Chandler Footage: Yeah, I mean the amount of passion that we just listened to is second to none. RAC Aaron: Oh yeah. Yeah. And we are no, no, no. That's perfect. Um, no, there's something so frustrating about watching a team that has it, but then on the field, when you, when you get into the play calling, when it becomes a play calling issue, and I'm about to talk about play calling issues, um, and, uh, as a Mississippi State fan watching Ryan Footage: Yeah, I apologize. It haunts me, dude. Chandler Footage: No, no, it's great. It's great. It's great. RAC Aaron: So far in the Libby area, you know, we kept hearing announcing and talking about like this team's come such a long way. Mississippi State from the entire time I've watched him for the, you know, over a decade, we're a defense based school. Most of our players that made it to the next level defensive play, you know, we'll, we'll have DAC out there, but It's not like everybody else, know, you can watch almost every super bowl and there's going to be a Mississippi State defensive player out there. but then we get in, these last two years of defense and we were running this like five, four or five safety scheme, where we had just so much of our line back deep and we just never adjusted and they were like, we'll just run the ball. Every team just it's fine. Here we go. You know, cam scataboo. last year, well, the first of levy just puts on us and it was well, should we bring in coverage? No, let's keep it the same. So, ⁓ you know, we a defensive play calling issue. Offensively wasn't much better. will say the good thing this year. I don't think we should have won as many games as we did win. you know, we almost lost to Arkansas with their interim head coach. Um, it was very close. We, the big upset we got was beating Arizona state when they were like, beat a top 10 team for like the first time. And I think as long as I've been alive, and it's like, yeah, Arizona state was kind of riding that last year of great, you know, a great year, but sometimes you do get one of those players that can push you through and came scatter. Boo. Was that for them? And so when we beat them, you know, we just kind of saw Arizona State's number drop on the rankings each week. And it was like, okay, maybe it wasn't like this big blowout amazing win that we thought it was. But each game kind of getting progressively fatter for us, the highlight of the season though was Mario Taylor ⁓ stepping a quarterback and we got to see a young quarterback step in, put the game on his shoulders. And when things weren't working, you could see a play kind of dying on the field. Every coverage covered everything, just nothing open and just watching a guy make up in his mind. Like I'm going to get that first down and he does. And then watch him throw a clean deep ball. A lot of accuracy, a lot of great decision-making still young. I won't, forgive the overall staff for letting them go out for the bowl game. dehydrated enough that he's cramping in the first quarter in mild weather. I was like, somebody's got to give that boy a pedialyte after new years, but it is something that like, I don't have a lot of hope for next season for us. I think we have some very bright spots of talent and I hope they stay, but I just didn't see any adjustments on that end that really like on that top down. Didn't. didn't progress. Now it could be Lebby's a new head coach. He was an offensive coordinator. Last time we went with an offensive coordinator, we had Morehead. He went out of control. ⁓ didn't really get back till Leach brought us back together. But I think there's something about when you get an offensive coordinator who is a booth guy and great offensive mind up in the booth when you got to be down on the field and going through everything. I think some of those guys can get a little overstimulated in a little bit like you got to adapt into that role of being on the field and doing everything right then and there without all the access to everything else. You're tracking down players, seeing what's what's going. That's a lot to take in. So though I don't see a lot about it, ⁓ don't have a lot of hope. I'll always give a coach the benefit of the doubt. The first couple of years, like give them a chance, let them, let them ride it out. think when you ⁓ a coach in ⁓ of the reasons we have some of the carousel issues that we have. Is that it is like, want somebody, we lost Dan Mullen to Florida. You know, it felt like a betrayal to us. I'll take them back. You're welcome. Come, come, come see us. We won't pay you as well as somebody else will. But like Florida expected a championship out of them immediately. Had still had good seasons. But Florida wanted that win. They wanted the big titles. Dan got what? Three seasons at Florida before he was gone. And it's like, you brought in a guy who's a developer. Like he's got to put a team together. Like I think if they would have given him two, three more years, he would have had a ball rolling. That would be hard to stop. I mean, we saw what he's at Las Vegas now. They come out strong this year and it's like, I don't think I've ever heard of Las Vegas anything. So, ⁓ that's just, know, ⁓ bias from us. We can admit it when we got it. ⁓ Don't a lot of other conferences, but. Chandler Footage: Until this year. RAC Aaron: It is something until this year. Yeah. ⁓ well, you know, big 10 does make it hard for us to ignore sometimes, but is, ⁓ is something that even though it's the second year, I don't have a lot of hope. I'd like to see where we're at, at the end of the third year. If team spirals out of control, like it did under Moorhead, ⁓ that's different story where it's just like, ⁓ there's developing here. We're losing everything. The transfer portal is going to eat every bit of talent we got and We'll see. We'll see. I don't even know if we'll have bowl game eligibility again. I'll have to double check the schedule, but. Ryan Footage: you RAC Aaron: It's not looking good out here, boys. Ryan Footage: Yeah, also to, when you're talking about the coaching carousel thing, I think now more than ever, every single year, especially right now, you're seeing all these teams are firing their coaches because with the new transfer portal stuff, they all think that like one new coach, one year in the portal, they're going to win that year. Every single team thinks that they have a chance to win that year. And that's just like, not the case. There's still. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: something to having a historic program. There's still other teams that are have money more than you. But also, y'all's quarterback, I loved watching him. He was so electric. But in that bowl game, I thought he died that one hit at the end. ⁓ RAC Aaron: Yeah, he was. I, I was furious because I was like, we're down what two, three scores drive. And I was like, don't leave that, but he's been cramping terribly the whole game. Take them out. You know, it like, don't leave them on the field. We're not getting a miraculous comeback for what were we in the tax layer bowl or something like that. ⁓ it's like ⁓ have the one thing that you have to build on safe for next season. Ryan Footage: Yes, Tom, yeah. RAC Aaron: And when that hit came into the leg, I was never happier to see that report like two days later when they were like, wasn't break it like no tendon damage, no broke. And I was like, I don't know how that happened. Cause when it happened on the field, I was like, that's a broken leg. Like there's just no if, and what's, what's about it. Cause that thing bent all over the place, but he got up. It seemed like he was doing good. And I hope he mentally recovers from that too, where he doesn't have that fear of getting injured and still can play hard. But he was definitely the shining spot and our kicker. really appreciate our kicker. he put a lot of points on the board for us, more than most other things. So, it was to have a good kicker. I remember under the leash years where it leach was like, I think we're to have open kicker tryouts next week. ⁓ and I thought that was one of the greatest, ⁓ post game comments I've ever heard. Ryan Footage: You I know a team that ⁓ needs that. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: Yeah. Yeah. So there was a stat speaking of that Ohio state kickers had not made a 50 plus yard field goal since 2019. What what are we doing? RAC Aaron: It's in the modern era. That's insane because kickers, I think out of all positions of football kickers are the ones that are like exponentially growing to the point where I'm worried that there might not be a range at a certain point that they can't hit watching some of these deep ball kicks are crazy. Chandler Footage: Well, with the fact Jaden fielding this year camera, on microphone, microphone hot camera, steaming hot in interview. What range are you comfortable in? Anything inside of 60. Got it. You know how many inside of 30 yard field goals he missed this year? Probably more than field goals he made altogether. I mean, it's, it's just a disaster of a kicking class the past like five, six years. Every time they would get to like the 30, 40 yard line in my head, I'm just going, if they don't score, it's either a turnover on downs or they might as well punt. kicking is off the table. RAC Aaron: Go for it on fourth. Yeah. ⁓ Ryan Footage: And you just, yeah, we're sitting there. We're sitting there watching the Miami game and you're, what was it? 27, Hash again. Yeah. That's as typical 27, right? Hash. This isn't going in. This isn't going in. Chandler Footage: It's unbelievable. 27 yards. Yes. Right. Hash. Ryan Footage: missed it. And that reminded me as well. I totally forgot Auburn. We had no kickers last year. Our, we had a really good kicker who had a great freshman year. His name's Alex McPherson. He's Evan McPherson from the Bengals little brother. And he was great his freshman year. I think he missed two field goals the whole year or made all of them or something, something ridiculous. But the next year, I guess he had some type of Crohn's disease or something and had to get one of those bags put in instead of his, ⁓ colon. So he missed the whole next year. So this year he came back and he dropped under a hundred pounds before the season. And then he got to a point where they let him start kicking again and he couldn't kick more than 30 yards, any up to 40 though. He can't kick 40 yards right now. And so the whole year was kind of him bouncing back. And then our backup kicker Townes Magoo from the year before, I'm pretty sure he tore his quad on a kickoff because one of the, one of the kickoffs, he kind of shanked it and it came off hobbling really bad. I didn't see him for six weeks and he like got hurt. But he, so we, we were on a third string kicker who was just a placeholder kicker. He was trying to kick, didn't do good. And then we Alex McPherson kick one day and we played Missouri, which we ended up going to overtime and losing. And he missed a few field field goals that game, but I love him, man. He's a great guy. He's a great Christian, man. I love hearing everything he says and everything. Apparently he's doing well now. He's getting better. He gained some more weight. Apparently he's bombing 60 yarders at practice right now. So that's good, but. RAC Aaron: I I couldn't even imagine losing like, or going sub 100 and competing at the like college level in ball, like how much that would change just your physical makeup. ⁓ and then trying to bounce back from that. mean, we, you saw me in the gym post super bowl where I just had one too many slices of pizza and I was like, I'm dying boys. I'm not going to make it. it's so that it is like sometimes ⁓ Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: I think that's another thing with college is you can fall in love with those kids out there and just like love that push that they're going in. They might not get you the national championship, but you're like, keep going. You keep playing. want to see the, I want to see the best from you. I think, especially if your team's in a rut, you got to live on that. Ryan Footage: Mm-hmm. Well, Chandler, I know we talked about your kicker missing field goals in prime moments. What'd you think about your season? Chandler Footage: So I think going in the 2025 season, the biggest question mark was the defense. They lost almost double digits in starters on defense, ⁓ into the drafts. They had a very young defensive team. They lost their coordinator. They a lot of question marks on that side of the ball. And I think fast forwarding through the whole end of the year, Matt Patricia was the best piece of the whole entire team. He created a phenomenal defense. set records throughout all of Ohio State with fewest points per game throughout the whole entire season Ohio State's ever had. But the other question marks were the offensive coordinator, Brian Hartline. He got promoted internally to the OC job, former wide receiver coach, best wide receiver recruiter on this planet. I'm excited to see what he does at USF. But the one thing he's good at is wide receivers. So I knew the passing attack was going to be great. What I didn't think was going to be great was the running game because he's never dealt with it. And yes, he's been a part of the offensive scheming and he's been a part of the Ryan day offense. He understands like a run game, but I just had question marks of, it going to be really vanilla? Is it going to be complex? Is he going to be able to create the run the ball first so you can open the pass game? is it just going to be okay? This guy's in the backfield. They're running this part of the right stack the box. This is not an RPO. This is nothing other than an HP dive to the right. And. That's what it ended up being. It was very cut and dry offensively. There was a lot of holes on the offensive line. They were a young offensive line, Tegra Shabula on the outside. God bless his soul, but I'm very glad he's at Kentucky. The SEC can have him. might as well have been playing with his hands tied behind his back and just with a red cape, letting everybody through. I mean, it was a masterclass of just a valley of people pass rushing. Um, but all in all, they went through the season, they opened up a Texas, my wife and I went to that game. It was a great first game. That was the debut of Matt Patricia in the, defense. So that ended up being great. Held him to seven points, 14, seven, again, the offense didn't really run the ball. had CJ Donaldson and they got from West Virginia, which another very touchy subject goal line back. That is not good on the goal line. Make that make sense. But. Ryan Footage: ⁓ dude. Chandler Footage: Their two running backs were supposed to be CJ Donaldson and James Peeples, two veteran guys that have been in the CJ Donaldson been in West Virginians program for a couple of years. James Peeples has been underneath the system for that was his third year. And they were supposed to be the one two punch. Obviously can't replace Trevion and Quinchon going to the league. Like that's about as good as a one two combo as you can want. But we thought they were going to have some kind of scheme to get them going. But no. They ended up getting Bo Jackson and Isaiah West off the bench, both true freshmen, never played snaps of college football. By like the third game, Bo Jackson was a starting running back. He's a great running back, but he's also 18 years old and has never played collegiate football or had to pass pro against a 23 year old like Ruben Bane that's coming off the edge and just gets pancaked. So, I mean, there's levels to it. So that was a key sticking point that the... RAC Aaron: Yep. Chandler Footage: offensive line, the blocking, the pass pro. There was just not a lot of scheming on that side of the ball to be able to create a good running game, to create a good clean pocket for Julian Sane. And I think a big problem of that was going through, had, they were going to have the Texas game, which ended up being still a very good game, but then they're supposed to have Penn State at home. Penn State ended up firing James Franklin halfway through the season. That turned out to be a dumpster fire of a program and just an awful game. I mean, they were supposed to have all these big games lined up and then they were just dropped off and they ended up having one ranked game or two with Illinois. Um, and then they get through the back half of the season leading into Michigan. had like Rutgers, UCLA, all these just bad bottom of the barrel, big 10 teams that, they, the, course they go 12 and O, but they haven't had any real competition. The real Indiana is the Miami's of veteran defensive lines, veteran defensive schemes. to where they actually have to, you know, maybe be coerce and, you know, block as a unit and not just have a weak link or a weak side. RAC Aaron: Well, and you take into the idea of, you've got a bunch of fresh faced 18 year olds on that field. You're 12 and ⁓ by the end of the season, you're on X, you're on news articles, you're reading about how you're the baddest thing that the world's ever seen. And then, yeah, somebody like a Bane shows up and he puts you in the dirt. And I mean, that's not those kids fault. That's tough. That's a tough thing. I didn't realize they were that fresh early on in the season. Chandler Footage: Yep. Yep. Yep. Yes. No, no, no. RAC Aaron: I mean, you can tell you root for a successful program because you're like, here's these young. it's like, you still would deep. He's still, ⁓ still got good stuff. ⁓ we weren't even bowl eligible. but it's something where it's like, no, you see from time to time where you can get some of those ⁓ younger freshmen's a game. They put up a big game against somebody that might not necessarily be like a huge bit competition in a normal. Chandler Footage: 100 % and it's it was it was a great season, but I mean RAC Aaron: state, know, they might be in a rebuild year or as you said, with Penn state, like an absolute crazy set of circumstances that that team's not going to perform as normal. So you getting upset like we did early on in the season when we beat Arizona state and it's like, this is the new Mississippi state. I was like, it's not like next week, it's to be real rough for us. And you get that in having that in the playoffs for you. It's tough. Like that's a tough blow because ⁓ Chandler Footage: Yes. And I think coming off, so first of all, Kirk Shinetti, season of his life, hats off to him, phenomenal run, first time to go 16 and 0 in a 12 team format. But he had that Ohio State game circled, whether it happened or not, since last year when they came to Ohio State and got the breaks beat off of him. Once that happened, fast forward a calendar year, he was so prepared for that game and had a veteran team. RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah. Chandler Footage: He knew where to attack. I'm sure he'd been watching film for six months on what was happening. he was, he was dialed in ready to rock and roll and to have those kinds of edge rushers on Indiana's team and the veteran presence of them. And again, on Miami as well with Ruben Bane and can't remember the other guy's name. We talked about him at the gym and I I'm blanking on his name. Um, but yes, I mean, they're both 23, 24 years old. You can't expect a RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Ryan Footage: Hakim Amazdor Chandler Footage: 18 year old true freshman to be able to hold up past pro standing completely still when those guys are running full head of steam through a B gap and they're just getting blasted. I mean it's it's going to happen. RAC Aaron: Yeah. A year ago, he was blocking 14 year olds. you know, it's a big difference in world there. Chandler Footage: Exactly. So I think if they had throughout the season a more battle test schedule, because their schedule was it shaped up to be one of the softer schedules they've had in a while. And that's, mean, I was that's all I was hearing all year long. And I was like, OK, they're doing all right. Like, we'll see what happens when they get to a defense plan. Well, then, of course, I mean, those two games against Miami and Indiana, the defense played phenomenal. I mean, they held Indiana at 10 points. I mean, they held. RAC Aaron: Yeah. ⁓ I mean that, that was the crazy thing is watching your guys's defense play almost, you know, as good as you can on that field for as young as those guys are. That was, that was great to see. And, ⁓ you know, it's like, we were talking about Indiana. We'll dive deeper than that as we go on some more time in the off season here, watching something like simple ball like that, just fundamental football, just nothing crazy. ⁓ Chandler Footage: Yes. RAC Aaron: Nothing over the top, but then when something opened, you know, playing that safe ball and then watching for that complacency to happen and going deep for it. But it was like Ohio State's defense seemed to play on that similar like that's something where like Ryan Day is we're talking about Hugh Freeze's issues of not adapting to the talent. I felt like y'all's defense played safe defense, but it didn't try to do anything too crazy. It didn't put too much strain on any of the two or Chandler Footage: Exactly. RAC Aaron: Too many young guys that you had out there. You know, it was a fresh defense from last year from, from a national championship team to, you know, baby faces out there. It played solid because it played consistent. Chandler Footage: And I think a big part of that was Matt Patricia coming in. He had immediate from the first day he walked in the program. I mean, multiple Super Bowls. He's been an OC, DC and head coach in the NFL. mean, having that kind of pedigree coming into a coordinating position in college football, no matter where you were in the NFL is huge. You're immediately overqualified. him being able to, exactly. So him being able to come in and run his program the way he wanted it. Ryan Day handed the keys to him defensively and was like, Hey, like you've done it, do your thing. It's worked. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. And it felt like that. Mm-hmm. Chandler Footage: And he sat down with all the players. He established himself as a sideline coordinator, which I loved. He was always on the, he was always in the iPads with all the kids after each drive. He would go over, he'd break down. He would talk to all of his teams. He would, I mean, it was, he was very personal with all of his guys. And I feel like not only was he a good coach on the field, but he also was a huge mentor to all these guys. You hear him talk about like Sonny was on the NFL combine yesterday, just praising Matt Patricia and how much like he helped them like in and out of football. So. RAC Aaron: I'll let you. Yeah. Well, and as we were talking about having a coach that's going for a guy who's new to the starting, not only not putting them in positions that they're constantly getting beat at, but then to have that coaching side on the bench next to him, talking them down out of bad plays and not putting them in that repeated bad mental space where it's like, okay, I can understand these are young guys. I'm going to talk them out of the hole. Chandler Footage: Exactly. RAC Aaron: Get them back on the field, give them a layup to get the confidence back and then let them run again. And it's like, I think that's some of those things you see great coaches do or great, even great coordinators. Chandler Footage: Exactly. I think like going in, I mean, not going to touch on it too much. I know we're going to talk about it on other shows, but going into this upcoming season, they, mean, again, coordinator left. took the USF job now, Brian Hartline's head coach at USF. So that job opened up again. So now they get Arthur Smith, former Steelers and Titans coach. I think again, with the NFL pedigree like he has. Ryan Footage: Yeah, and. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: Yes, maybe at the Steelers, didn't perform very well, but when he was at the Titans, mean, guess what? had Derek Henry and Ryan Tannehill and they were a top three offense every year in the league. And yes, Derek Henry is incredible, but Ryan Tannehill is not a Super Bowl quarterback by any means. And he like brought out the best in him and he schemed phenomenally for him. So I think if. RAC Aaron: Yep. Well, we can, we can always remember. They even had a tenure on the Dolphins that didn't go so well. Comes back, becomes the one of the generational coaches of all time. Chandler Footage: Exactly. Yes, and I think having a guy that really cuts his teeth in the run game and just toughness on the offensive line to create offensive plays to happen is going to be huge for this team. And again, another guy coming from the NFL, that's that's where they want to go. So why not listen to a guy that's been there? So I'm very bullish on this year, but I mean, they didn't add any pieces to the offensive line, the whole offensive lines going back. So hopefully, you know, another year under the belt, strength training, look at the tape. RAC Aaron: Yeah. It worked. Yeah. Chandler Footage: getting better, having a new season coordinator, it'll all work out. But overall, you can't be mad at last season. They got over the hurdle of the Michigan game at Michigan. It was a nice snowy atmosphere. was like a movie-like finish with the snow coming on the field. You couldn't see any of the hash marks, the logos or anything. It was a cool game to watch. But they got over that hump, 12-0, seasoned in, kind of sputtered out. But next year's New Year. Ryan Footage: you you RAC Aaron: negative face it with hope unlike us. Chandler Footage: Exactly, I mean, again, I'm a very fortunate fan to be kind of grandfathered into a program that is historically pretty good. And a bad season is like nine or 10 wins and not like not eligible. So it's an easy pill to swallow whenever, know, you have ups and downs, but you're still, you know, postseason hopes are alive most of the time. Ryan Footage: We know I'm a Patriots fan, so I love Matt Patricia. I already knew a lot going in and it's almost bad. Like at this point, I watch every Auburn game. watch all the Ohio State games and I watch a lot of the other games, but I almost know more of their coaches and roster than Auburn. Like it's like probably the same for me, but I mean, Matt Patricia going in. RAC Aaron: you Ryan Footage: They would call him the mad scientist. He was going to be like a aerospace engineer, right? Yeah. Chandler Footage: Yeah. ⁓ So I think he had a defense contracting job lined up and then he really was stuck on the coaching train. So I think his either high school or collegiate coach offered him like a student assistant kind of coaching gig. I don't know if it was defense specific, but I think it was just overall just helping. And it was a very low salary, but he took that ran with it and then kind of developed himself into a defensive minded coach. He's even developed a software where he like breaks down film. runs analytics. He tendencies. He runs all kinds of different stuff and he implemented that into Ohio state. And so when he breaks down film with all of his players in his rooms, he breaks them out by position coach or by position coaches and team film. And he'll go through and he'll talk about all those things that they see. And it's just, it's fascinating because not only is he a genius on tape, but he's also RAC Aaron: Thank Chandler Footage: super big people person who just cares about all of his guys and wants to know their input just as much as they want to know his. Ryan Footage: Yeah, and he's just so smart and you can see that carry over in the team like you watch your defense last year They are so disciplined every single guy from the oldest to the youngest They can do all kinds of things and it helps you with people like like uh, like Caleb downs that can pull down You can put our vel on the line. can drop him in coverage. It just had so much confusion, but he's out here I mean, and you've got guys like Arvel and Sonny who you can obviously move around a lot. And there's, there's just so much versatility there, but you get this big defense of mine, like Matt, Patricia, and you can pretty much do whatever he wants, especially with these great talented guys. And it just added so much confusion. Like Arch Manning, who's never played a decent team came in the first game. And it's like, how are you supposed to play that? You're playing an NFL level kind of discipline in your first college game ever. You know, it's, it's so tough. Chandler Footage: Yeah, he really preached communication. He like everybody kind of looked at Caleb and Sonny for their play calling and they kind of dispersed, but to be able to have like a true freshman, Devin Sanchez step in as not only a corner, but an outside corner role. And he was put on an Island all the time and to have him come in and Matt Patricia be able to trust him and trust his talent and fill that role. It speaks volumes and just his preparation that he put in with. Matt, Patricia, to be able to even get to that point. So it's a testament to how well he's doing for sure. Ryan Footage: Yeah. we're, ⁓ sorry. Yeah. We're talking about young players. Like Devin Sanchez was one of your best defensive players. was, Arvel's not a freshman. It was his first year starting. He was amazing. Devin Sanchez is a young guy. And how we're talking about the running backs. Like James Peeples was supposed to be the guy, but then Bo Jackson, Isaiah West just ended up being so good. And they're going to be good. Cause we saw a glimpse of greatnesses in Trevion Henderson when he was there. Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. Yes, which is crazy. Yes, yes. Yes. Ryan Footage: and stuff, but they're freshmen. They're both freak athletes. They're out there. Jackson's running for a hundred yards a game as an 18 year old. It's insane. And Devin Sanchez is one of those guys. I know he's a five star, but he's a six, two corner. You can put him on the outside. And when you give that kind of freak talent to Matt Patricia, he's going to fix them. He's going to coach them. He fixes that raw talent, hones them into good football players. Chandler Footage: Yes. RAC Aaron: easy. Chandler Footage: Exactly. And it seems very like cliche, but he's very good at identifying players strengths and tailoring the defense to play towards those. So he doesn't put anybody, no matter where they are on the field in a bad spot, or at least doesn't try to put them in a bad spot. The play could scheme that way offensively, but he sets people up to where it's like fail safe almost to where they're in the best spot. Yes. RAC Aaron: Yeah. It really felt like that. Yeah. When it's like watching him, like you could see like if somebody was getting beat on a route or something like that, like bringing more coverage over to give them a little bit more wiggle room to perform where it's like, okay, instead of putting them in a hole, he's good. Chandler Footage: And it's funny because Caleb downs and Josh downs have a podcast and they had the styles brothers on there and they were talking about the play calling from Jim Knowles versus Matt Patricia and Sonny flat out said the play comes in so much cleaner, so much sooner, like on green dot mid game, the adjustments happen faster and the plays are simple. Like Matt Patricia does a great job simplifying schemes to them. And they're not some complex way of delivery. But once it's in action with all the pieces moving, it turns into something complex to offense to look at. And I think that's what they loved about him play calling. And I'm stoked that he just signed his extension to be there for a couple more years. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, he's amazing. I mean, Jim Nolte was good. but like he hasn't historically been good. Y'all had an amazing defense going into that 2024 year and he did great with that team, but your defense was so good. And then this year you just see so much more creativity, so many disguised coverages with Matt Patricia. It's just so, so good to see, you know. Chandler Footage: Yes. And I would argue that the defense this year was better than last year's team. Ryan Footage: Yeah, I would too. Going in, like we weren't sure, but I think they were better. Chandler Footage: Yes. I mean, even in the games they lost with Miami and Indiana, mean, 10 points to Indiana and then really like 17 to Miami because they had to let the running back score to be able to have a chance to score again when they played Miami to make it the 24. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, I think y'all definitely had the best defense in the country. Hands down. Chandler Footage: And it's wild that we're never going to see Sonny and Arville on the same team again. I mean, they're both putting out four four sevens in the combine and it's it's unbelievable that they were on the same side of the ball. RAC Aaron: . Ryan Footage: Yeah, they're freaks. They're freaks. But I think that what really got y'all when we were talking about Brian Hartline being the OC, y'all didn't really have that same versatility, that same kind of electric play call you have with Chip Kelly. And Chip Kelly didn't even really bring that out until the playoff time, where y'all kind of had glimpses of it through the year. Like you even have the Michigan game. I know you don't want to hear about that, but that was the worst offensive game I've ever seen. It's terrible. And then he finally just turned it on. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, 100%. Ryan Footage: But he had the fact he can turn it on. The issue this year is Brian Hartline knows how to throw the ball. He didn't have the big electric kind of run schemes that y'all did, which you couldn't do the play action. It didn't lead anything. It doesn't open the pass at all. But it really made an issue that their whole goal this year was they made such a big deal about trying to limit as many plays as they had to run in a game. They would waste a lot of time. Chandler Footage: Correct. I was just about to say that. Ryan Footage: They wouldn't run a lot of plays on purpose. And that's a good thing. Like you, I want to save my players. I don't want them to get hurt. Jeremiah Smith still got hurt. Colonel Tate still got hurt. Julian Sainz still got hurt. Same like couple weeks. They all got hurt anyways, which I guess it could have got worse if they ran more plays. But the issue is you're playing slow all year. You're playing slow. And finally, when it's time to turn it on, you haven't done it in a full year. RAC Aaron: Thank Chandler Footage: Yep. Yep. Ryan Footage: You can't just turn it on. You've had no practice turning it on. Chandler Footage: Yeah, you can't exactly. Especially to the two national championship teams. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Well, and it's not just turning it on. Yeah. You're going against two of the, all like, you know, if we're talking top three defenses of the year, all three of these teams are on this list, Ohio state, Indiana, and Miami of like power defenses. Like, having that first real test ⁓ full speed ⁓ one of those, ⁓ that there's any rust, any weakness. Was going to get exposed out the gate now you've got four quarters to make the adjustment to fix it. Not time, not off season and doing it on such a long break. How long was your guys's like from game of the season to postseason? Chandler Footage: They played the Big Ten Championship the week of the 10th, 10th, December 9th. And then they played first game January 8th, about a month. Ryan Footage: Yeah. And what was that stat this year? Indiana was the only person with a bye to win yet in the college full playoff. Yeah. They were the first ones to win. RAC Aaron: That's brutal. Chandler Footage: Yes. Cause last year, none of the, yeah. So I think, I think it, yeah, definitely the speed of play was awful. And we heard the whole narrative all year and I bought into it, of course, because I will always give Ryan day the benefit of doubt. Now that he got over the hurdle beat Michigan, won the national championship until they do something catastrophic. He's earned the benefit of doubt in my eyes. So I bonded the narrative of, Hey, we can crank it up when we need to, just like you were saying, Ryan. RAC Aaron: All of them. A month is a lot. Yeah. Chandler Footage: we're going to go, we're going to pace a play out to where our team offensively has played like one less game than everybody else because of the amount of plays that we've ran to be able to win all these games. And then it goes to, mean, even with Texas, they had a pretty good defense on paper. It wasn't a top five defense, but it was definitely a top 15 defense in the country. And I think holding them to seven points, RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: And putting up 14 on them, like it was like, ⁓ the offense was like, okay, but still holding that kind of the team to only seven. was like, okay, maybe we can do it. But then again, you know, get Indiana lose Miami lose, especially the Carson Beck. I losing a Carson Beck is just a disaster. Ryan Footage: Yeah, in my opinion, Miami sucked really bad, but... RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: I think, I that game against Texas A ⁓ in the wind tunnel was the craziest playoff game I've ever watched. ⁓ Ryan Footage: That's the worst football game I've seen besides the Kentucky Auburn game last year. That was just a nothing Yeah, I know but I mean Yeah, I Mean Especially the Texas game the first game I'm like, okay, you got a freshman quarterback Julian saying you're gonna be a little conservative You're not gonna let him lose. It just looked like you're holding back all year every game looked at your holding back on offense I think we're so used to that narrative that even the year before Chandler Footage: I mean, there was like hundred missed field goals. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Chandler Footage: It was like Jayden Fielding was kicking for both teams. Yes. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Ryan Footage: I know that when y'all played Oregon, you kind of turned it on that first game you played Oregon during the regular season, but the rest of the games, it kind of seemed like you're holding back a little that this year it's like, okay, when it's time to turn it on, these guys have been there. We know how to turn it on and they tried to turn it on and they're just so used to the same speed. And like you were saying, Aaron, the vulnerabilities come out and we know that Tegra Shabal cannot block at all. You know, you get a defense, defense, defense align. Chandler Footage: No sir. No sir. Ryan Footage: Can't block them. You're not used to running the tempo. You're not used to running these certain plays. It was just a disaster. And I'm so disappointed because y'all were supposed to win these games this year and Miami's terrible. Carson Beck is really, really bad. Really bad. RAC Aaron: I mean, but it goes to show you how fierce that Miami defense was. mean, watching them, you were like, they played like the other teams line owed them money. Like they were hurting them boys. Chandler Footage: And it's, was frustrating to watch too, because Ruben Bain looked like he needed to be on a, on a, on a oxygen mask after running for four straight blitzing plays. Like if, if they just tempoed, us sitting on the couch, we could see, Hey, when you run tempo and you get these guys tired, they're not going to come after you as much because they can't breathe. So ⁓ speed it up. And they never did. They couldn't because they never, they hadn't all season. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Well, it seemed like, you know, that was, that was the only thing in that calling that it was like, okay, double teaming him's not stopping them. going to have to triple, like you might have to vote. Like you'd pick which side you want to defend more, but where that guy down till he's winded, like you're saying, like you, but give yourself some breathing room, which it just felt like, like, I mean, credit to say it, he, he still ⁓ Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: Wiggled around and found stuff to get clear on, but taking hits like that. mean, I, any quarterback is shaken up. Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. Yeah, he got, he had double digit sacks and two games playing Indiana Miami. He didn't have double digits. had like six sacks all year. So that was definitely an eye opener for him too, to like that. I mean, that was great for him to develop those calluses to those moments because he hadn't been pressured and hit like he was in Indiana and Miami. And I think going into this next season, it's going to have taught him like, Hey, like if these things start happening, I'm going to have to make these adjustments because. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Chandler Footage: I can't just be going into the dirt every play when I drop back in my drop. RAC Aaron: Well, and I mean, is that feeling though, in college football that I think as fans, we can develop bad habits of critiquing a coach doing something like this. Because ⁓ off of a national championship win, a team that is almost, you know, ship a theseus style, a brand new college football team that he's coaching, you know, compared to what he had last year. He made a big call and stuck with it. Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: Like he didn't stay three games in. abandoning this thing. It was an interesting concept to say, like, what if we did this slow play? What if we did, how does this affect conditioning? Without that, the game doesn't evolve. But I think there are those times where it's like, mean, you know, as I'm a big Mike Leach guy, here's a guy who's like, what if we just never run the ball? What if we never do that? And then they're like, I don't think that works in college football. And he's like, Let me give it a shot. might not get you a championship, but it's something that, Hey, you can see if it works or not. ⁓ I that's worth giving credit to even if season didn't end in the hopes that it would be another national championship. But I think we could even say at the preseason, it wasn't probably going to be one ⁓ of from layout and the new team. So it's like, this was a good year to. Chandler Footage: 100 % RAC Aaron: to make changes and then, you know, we'll see sign of the coaching potential, which he's already a national championship coach. has nothing left to prove. But if he makes adjustments based off of that performance last year, if he tries to do the exact same thing and it doesn't work again, then that's crazy. But if he makes sense. ⁓ Chandler Footage: Well, I think a testament, a testament to that is him hiring Arthur Smith. He went out and found what worked on defense, hiring a seasoned defensive coordinator from the NFL. And it was like, Hey, I'm going do the same thing for the office coordinator. And I'm to get one that is in the run game and offensive line, because he made his bread and butter off of being an offensive line coach before he was a DC. So he has all the things that they had weak points in. RAC Aaron: Absolutely. Chandler Footage: built into his resume. So I think now him being able to be in a CEO role this year again, like he was when Chip Kelly was there, is going to be great. RAC Aaron: Yep. Yeah. ⁓ I mean, out of the three of us, we can, I think me and Teal can admit here that you have the best chance to have a good season next year out of all of us. ⁓ Hopefully. Chandler Footage: I don't know, the Auburn Bulls look good too. Ryan Footage: don't know. That's for another, uh, another episode. You got a lot of thoughts on that, but dude, I was just so disappointed in y'all this year. I was waiting for y'all to win it again. Y'all played. I wasn't sure if Indiana was legit. And then later in the season, I was like, they're, they're actually good. RAC Aaron: No. Chandler Footage: you That's okay. Ryan Footage: And when you played them, they played the best game they possibly could have played and beat you by three points. Y'all should have won that game. Y'all should have won the Miami game. Y'all held them to a low score, but that's the worst offense I have ever seen ever. Carson Beck's terrible. He can't throw the ball downfield. They would throw five yard out routes and screens to Malachi Tony. It is the most frustrating thing ever. That's what Georgia does too. It's so frustrating, but their defense really was good. And it's unfortunate because y'all really do have to pick your poison. It's like when you get down the red zone, are you going to let Jayden Fielding miss a field goal or are you going to let CJ Donaldson get stuffed in a line? You know, so it's a tough, tough game there. Chandler Footage: Yeah. And I think when you can't scheme the three points to be guaranteed once you cross the 50, and then it kind of changes the way you're looking at your off at the play calling because like, like I got to get down there pretty close. My kicker is going to have a chance because he's kicking with fingers, toes, hands, everything. He's using all of his body to try to get up there. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Well, and with Miami's case, your game against Miami, mean, Tony on Miami turned out to be such a, he's a just crazy talent. mean, that, that I would say for me, side was the most impressive player of the year for me, just to watch a guy ⁓ come in as a freshman, a young freshman ⁓ have that mental of the game down where it's like ⁓ he'd run into a hole. Ryan Footage: Yeah, and it- Chandler Footage: I'm not like I turn into a dog. Yeah. Ryan Footage: Yeah, he's good. Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: that open because he didn't charge full speed like, as soon as he needed to turn the jets on, they were on and he was making yards at that. I ⁓ And that's something, you know, when you, when you're out there trying to make a name for yourself in that first year, I could imagine that's very difficult to put aside to make the right slow call and the patient call. So ⁓ That is somebody I can't wait to see more out of next season. Chandler Footage: Yeah, he was very patient. Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: I'd love for him to transfer to a team that isn't Miami. though I just think Miami does love its role as kind of like the villains ⁓ college football. And so I respect that for him by treating him as such. no, I am I will be watching some Miami games just to see Tony play more. Ryan Footage: Yeah Chandler Footage: for sure. Ryan Footage: Yeah, he's great. I love Mark Fletcher too, dude. He was a dog. He wanted that game so bad. He's just fighting for it every, every play, you know. RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah. Chandler Footage: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: But there is a lot of excitement for us. lot of things for us to watch for next season coming down the rails.
