- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the IM team series and your daily influence and today we're going to talk about the echo chamber and you know we're getting more and more of the echo chamber not less our ability to lean in to our own echo chambers those groups in social media that just.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: re-verb and re-gurgitate the topics that we want to talk about this morning.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: I was doing my weekly check-in with just friends on Facebook and saw so many of them in echo chambers on politics and it doesn't matter what side you're in.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: We tend to gravitate towards those who validate our thoughts, validate our feelings and the problem
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: that we're getting, I think, is we're creating these echo chambers where we don't allow ourselves to hear other people.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: They understand contextually what's going on outside of our own areas of influence and what we're hearing from ourselves in each other.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: And in the business world, it's really important, regardless of where you're at in the organization that you don't fall susceptible
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: That echo chamber.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: And the first thing we can do as leaders is look for those signs, look for those triggers, the behaviors that we have.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: Are we encouraging people to share their insights?
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: Are we emphasizing that diversity of thought can be valuable to us?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: And that just because we allow diversity of thought doesn't mean that we have to lean into everybody's ideas.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: But we can listen to them
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: And there is a way for us to apply a very simple process within whatever area of influence you find yourself to doing that.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: You can apply the smart communication principle to the diversity of communication when you're bringing in unique ideas hearing different viewpoints.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: because you can challenge them to be smart, specific, measurable, attainable, relative and timely, in whatever it is they're bringing to the table.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: And you might end up with multiple smart ideas, and then you as the leader get to make a choice.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: But when we apply that to our area of influence, and we valid
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: And if they're doing it in a smart way, we open up our organizations and we open up ourselves to getting out of that echo chamber, getting away from group think, and from developing an environment where we can be unique, we can be diverse, we can be forward thinking.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: We can take more into account, we can understand how our team is applying smart to their
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: perceptions and areas of influence.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: When we disrupt group think, we foster a complete individual organizational open-minded influence.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: When we create this culture of constructive descent, which by the way, smart communication,
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: In and of itself can be built on constructive dissent because when we're being smart, there really isn't any dissent, there's just smart debate and we can then develop actionable strategies that we can create tactics with that are smart and we can disrupt that group think and we can begin to intentionally work with these contrasting viewpoints.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: And when we encourage this smart today and we encourage this constructive criticism of our own ideas, our own policies, our own procedures, our own strategies, our own tactics, we can grow in very unique ways.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: And when we implement this smart way, it's a smart strategy.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: When we implement this smart way, these smart tactics, you can begin to create better and more
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: They go from being goals to places you will reach because the whole team is together.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: Then when we structure our efforts and cultivate this unique, diverse perspective, when we create these clear metrics for success, not just individually, but as a team, when we set these deadlines for feedback, for reaching milestones, for what the path
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: hold our team members accountable for what they're bringing to the table.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: When we hold them accountable to just beams smart, we get fresh ideas, we get to our milestones, we reach our objectives and we don't reach them alone, we reach them together.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: So let's empower the individuals of our organization to be smart, to be constructive, to bring their thoughts
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: and strong teams are built on the empowerment of the individual, and that team is in itself and individual, and it becomes so much stronger.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: The foundation is so much deeper, so much wider, and we are all moving through our objectives, through our mission together.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: on the same platform in the same language with the same mindset.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: So let get out of that echo chamber, get yourself out of group think, challenge the status quo, but make sure you're smart about it.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: Make sure that you are staying true to the core values of the mission of your organization using smart as your guidance.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: And enable your teams to come in and bring that smart communication, those smart ideas,
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: The smart perspectives that smart descent to the table and watch your organizations grow in ways you never thought they could.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: I hope this helps you to identify the echo chambers we live in.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: Identify the group, thank you, might be stuck in and grow to new places.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I look forward to talking to you again soon.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: Have a great day.
