- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of The Lovable Reunion Podcast.
- 0:12Speaker 1: This episode, we are have the pleasure of sitting here
- 0:16Speaker 1: with our shortstop Addison Russell, young twenty two year old
- 0:20Speaker 1: at the time in sixteen, got called up in twenty one.
- 0:22Speaker 1: In twenty fifteen, had a monster postseason for us. Cannot
- 0:26Speaker 1: wait to relive these memories. Addie, how you been.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I've been good man. I appreciate you guys having me.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Just seeing you guys's face bring back so many memories.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Just excited to be here.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Bro, your world traveled, Korea, Mexico, where else as an
- 0:42Speaker 3: aged has not aged. I feel like we walk out like,
- 0:47Speaker 3: wait a minute, all of us have got except for ADDIE's.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Let's get right into it, Bro. Twenty fourteen, we stink cubs.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We're here and we make this trip for a young
- 1:01Speaker 1: shortstop and it too and we trade Jeff Samarga, who
- 1:03Speaker 1: is one of our biggest leaders on the team, and
- 1:06Speaker 1: Jason Hammill for you and I know we got a
- 1:08Speaker 1: couple of urs Billy McKinney in that trade. But when
- 1:11Speaker 1: we made that trade from on our side of it,
- 1:14Speaker 1: we knew that was the end of us being bad
- 1:16Speaker 1: and we were going to be good soon, and you
- 1:19Speaker 1: kind of were the end of all of our woes.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I don't know if you know that or not, but
- 1:23Speaker 1: did you know what you were getting into after you
- 1:25Speaker 1: got trade? I mean, You're coming from Oakland to you know,
- 1:28Speaker 1: one of the best organizations in the world.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean absolutely not. I didn't know what was
- 1:33Speaker 2: happening on the other end. All I know is, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 2: I was with the A's and I was climbing ranks
- 1:40Speaker 2: pretty quick.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I had earlier that year.
- 1:43Speaker 2: The second game of the season, I pulled my hamstring
- 1:46Speaker 2: and I was out for a little bit. I came
- 1:48Speaker 2: back for like a week after about a two month
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, stanton rehab. I came back for about a
- 1:57Speaker 2: week and July fourth, you know, that was the date
- 2:00Speaker 2: that I got traded. But it's funny because that day
- 2:05Speaker 2: it was my day to sit because I'm on this
- 2:07Speaker 2: rehab program but still playing, and I remember like looking
- 2:11Speaker 2: around the dugout and like no one was talking to me,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and I'm like like, like why am I you know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: no one's talking to me. So I went into my
- 2:20Speaker 2: locker and I'm never on my phone during the game.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Like that was That's just religion for me. And I
- 2:26Speaker 2: get a text from Alberta Mora. He goes, hey, how
- 2:29Speaker 2: do you welcome to the team.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'm like, shit, what's going on? What's going on?
- 2:33Speaker 2: And I started replying back, and Joey Gallo was calling
- 2:37Speaker 2: me and like hello, Joey's up.
- 2:40Speaker 4: He's like, you just get traded? Like, I don't know.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So I ended up clicking in on those guys. And
- 2:47Speaker 2: then I walked back out to the dugout and I'm
- 2:50Speaker 2: sitting at the end of the dugout and one of
- 2:53Speaker 2: the pitching coaches never said a word to me since
- 2:55Speaker 2: I've been there since, down right next to me and
- 2:59Speaker 2: the and she goes, but I tell you what I
- 3:02Speaker 2: remember the first time I got traded.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Oh my start, I's tew you.
- 3:05Speaker 1: So that's how you found out, That's.
- 3:07Speaker 4: How I found out.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Oh shit, wow.
- 3:08Speaker 2: July fourth, twenty fourteen, I was twenty.
- 3:15Speaker 1: How what what were you? What was going through your head?
- 3:17Speaker 2: I was just kind of like dizzy, you know, I'm thinking,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you know, I've worked so hard, you know, to solidify
- 3:24Speaker 2: spot here at you know, Double A, and and now
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'm going off to another organization. So hop my phone,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'm looking at you know, who's all on the squad.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I see, you know, see Starling, see a couple of
- 3:38Speaker 2: other guys see you, and I'm like, dude, you know
- 3:41Speaker 2: these are stars. These are stars, Like I think I
- 3:44Speaker 2: think Cashtrow was maybe a two time All Star by then,
- 3:48Speaker 2: whenever you know, and and they're like, you know you're
- 3:52Speaker 2: gonna play middle infield. I'm like, all right, I've I've
- 3:54Speaker 2: never played second base, never played second base.
- 3:57Speaker 5: So I was just who called you?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Call you?
- 4:02Speaker 2: I can't really remember who called me, but I remember
- 4:04Speaker 2: going into a meeting with my manager with the rock Hounds,
- 4:09Speaker 2: New Koula was his name, and he said that, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the Cubs are making a strong push for young guys.
- 4:15Speaker 2: They said that you're going to be a centerpiece for
- 4:18Speaker 2: these young guys, and you know, don't look at this
- 4:21Speaker 2: as a negative way, but look at it as another
- 4:24Speaker 2: opportunity and big market group. So so after that, and
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, I let the dust set a little bit
- 4:31Speaker 2: and I was ready to go.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Bro.
- 4:33Speaker 1: We were so excited. I remember even going into twenty fifteen.
- 4:37Speaker 1: We signed Joe, We're getting all the piece and place
- 4:40Speaker 1: Lester signed. You sign right, and then I don't think
- 4:43Speaker 1: you broke with the team that year, did you I
- 4:45Speaker 1: did it right? You came up early April.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I think KB and I we worked really hard
- 4:51Speaker 2: that that spring.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And you know I thought that.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I thought that, I know, you know, there's yeah, there's
- 4:55Speaker 4: a good shot. You know, there's a good shot.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And and you know, both of us kind of sent
- 5:00Speaker 2: down the last week or half week or whatever, and
- 5:04Speaker 2: I had to work way back up.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Speaking of Starlin, you get called up, you're playing second base, right,
- 5:09Speaker 1: What was your relationship with him? Because Starlin was my boy.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Starlin taught me so much about my in my early
- 5:15Speaker 1: career that I translated to my whole career. So how
- 5:20Speaker 1: was that relationship with him? He's, like you said, a
- 5:23Speaker 1: couple time All Star to multiple two hundred hit seasons,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and now you're playing side by side with him.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it was you know, I can't lie.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It was kind of intimidating at first, but you know,
- 5:34Speaker 2: once I kind of talked to him and you know,
- 5:36Speaker 2: got to know him a little bit, we knew why
- 5:40Speaker 2: we were there. You know, we wanted to win.
- 5:42Speaker 4: We wanted to win.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And as the season went on, I got to see
- 5:45Speaker 2: Starlin go through his ups and downs, and I remember
- 5:49Speaker 2: one specific conversation. He was like, Addie, you have to
- 5:53Speaker 2: bet on yourself. You have to bet on yourself. You
- 5:55Speaker 2: can't you can't expect, you know, the coaches to tell
- 5:58Speaker 2: you anything like you you have to go out and
- 6:01Speaker 2: you have to make make your life the way that
- 6:03Speaker 2: you want it to be.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Wow.
- 6:05Speaker 3: So August comes around and you got to take his spot,
- 6:08Speaker 3: right remember that August seventh, August seventh joke your day office.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, So so I didn't know how all that stuff
- 6:16Speaker 2: was going to go down. You know, I'm at that point,
- 6:19Speaker 2: I'm kind of wet behind the ears, you know, I'm
- 6:20Speaker 2: just you know.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Where you're working hard to learn second base too, for sure.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah sure, and then you're still level one Joe's five levels,
- 6:27Speaker 3: you're still level one, happy to be here.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, you know, and just running off like
- 6:32Speaker 2: the testosterone that I had, and you know, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and waking up hard every single morning. You know, that's
- 6:38Speaker 2: kind of that's kind of how I start my day.
- 6:40Speaker 2: But but yeah, they said, they said, you know, we're
- 6:43Speaker 2: going to transition you to shortstop, and like, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: this is unbelievable, you know, and my first thought is,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, how starting going to take it you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: because because you never know really how that is, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: how you know how they I guess, you know, look
- 7:00Speaker 2: at things in that way. But he was a complete
- 7:04Speaker 2: pro about it. He was complete pro about it. I say,
- 7:06Speaker 2: from that day we probably even got a little closer,
- 7:09Speaker 2: you know, because he knows that it's not easy. And
- 7:13Speaker 2: I soon figured that out that you know, these guys
- 7:15Speaker 2: don't give you an inch, you know, and it was
- 7:18Speaker 2: nice having him there, you know, on both sides of
- 7:21Speaker 2: the bag to you know, kind of keep me strong talk.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Through some things.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Well.
- 7:25Speaker 3: That middle infield, that infield, especially fifteen to sixteen, was
- 7:30Speaker 3: was one historic defensively in sixteen, but that.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Was a tight knit group as everybody was young.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Bro, Yeah, you know, you were young, but a veteran
- 7:38Speaker 3: in a weird way, you know, directing those guys and
- 7:40Speaker 3: Starlin kind of the same way and taking to nice position.
- 7:43Speaker 3: But then we took off into August sweep the Giants.
- 7:47Speaker 3: You're playing shortstop Starlin, Starlin. I want to just hit
- 7:50Speaker 3: on Starlin real quick. Starlin was one of the best
- 7:52Speaker 3: teammates I ever had. He was so much a part
- 7:55Speaker 3: of that twenty sixteen team. I know, he wasn't there
- 7:57Speaker 3: but I said it at the parade and I still
- 8:00Speaker 3: believe it. So many guys before us were part of
- 8:03Speaker 3: that championship because they were part of the history, part
- 8:06Speaker 3: of the culture put us in that position to win.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And Starlin was that way. And I love him to
- 8:12Speaker 1: death and the fact that he was such a pro
- 8:16Speaker 1: because look, man, he was the face of the franchise.
- 8:19Speaker 1: He was a multiple time All Star, the shortstop. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: now Addie comes up and you're saying, oh, you need
- 8:24Speaker 1: to move a second. He was like, yeah, okay, I'll
- 8:26Speaker 1: move the second. He and he thrived. And that's the
- 8:29Speaker 1: type of player he is. And you're saying about him
- 8:32Speaker 1: teaching you that, And I know Soriano taught him that
- 8:36Speaker 1: and how to play and how to work and how
- 8:38Speaker 1: to always play. So it's just the level of the.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Chain that it follows, right, like the next guy passes
- 8:44Speaker 3: to the next guy. And I'm sure along your career
- 8:46Speaker 3: you've taught someone that same thing of hey, you got
- 8:48Speaker 3: to go out and earn earn your stripes.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Oh for sure, for sure.
- 8:51Speaker 2: You know, you know, being around guys that have done
- 8:55Speaker 2: way more than I have in baseball, you know, and
- 8:59Speaker 2: being able to pick their brains and hearing how they
- 9:02Speaker 2: talk about their business, hear how they go about their business.
- 9:06Speaker 2: You know, I kind of like reflect on how how
- 9:08Speaker 2: how I live, you know, my life and you know,
- 9:11Speaker 2: things I strive to do, and you know, talking to
- 9:13Speaker 2: those guys, they make the world a difference, and I
- 9:15Speaker 2: want to do the same for you know, a younger
- 9:17Speaker 2: generation or you know someone someone in my age, maybe
- 9:19Speaker 2: even someone older. You know, just just having conversation with
- 9:22Speaker 2: these guys, you know, because you know, everyone has people
- 9:26Speaker 2: that have impacted their life. And once you start communicating
- 9:28Speaker 2: about that, I think I think that's where the real
- 9:31Speaker 2: magic happens.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think you learned from that that
- 9:34Speaker 3: sixteen ten, fifteen sixteen team, your time here in Chicago,
- 9:37Speaker 3: Like it's there anything that stands out looking back now
- 9:39Speaker 3: and the things you've imparted on other guys.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I think I think a lot has to do with, like,
- 9:45Speaker 2: you know, being part of that team is it doesn't
- 9:46Speaker 2: matter how you're feeling that day, especially here in Chicago
- 9:50Speaker 2: when it's freezing, you know, you you just go out
- 9:53Speaker 2: and both you just go out and you give it all,
- 9:56Speaker 2: give it all you have because you know, for myself
- 9:58Speaker 2: coming up, I really didn't feel good unless unless if
- 10:02Speaker 2: I felt good, you know, like my body has to
- 10:04Speaker 2: feel good, my mind has to feel good to be
- 10:06Speaker 2: able to perform, you know. But as you know, I
- 10:10Speaker 2: transferred over and things were just uncomfortable.
- 10:12Speaker 4: The trade being in you.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Know, Alabama, which is nice, which is nice because my
- 10:17Speaker 2: family got to see you play you know, professional baseball
- 10:19Speaker 2: for the first time. But just being able to be
- 10:23Speaker 2: adaptive on the fly, you know, I think I think
- 10:25Speaker 2: that has a lot to do with it.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I remember, I remember my first impression I talked to
- 10:30Speaker 3: We've got a similar friend. One of your high school
- 10:31Speaker 3: coaches and I played together in high school. And he goes,
- 10:34Speaker 3: make sure Addie does a standing back flip, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 3: just making you do that and s ring trading. Yeah,
- 10:38Speaker 3: just freaking right there. Just y'll be landed. I'm like,
- 10:42Speaker 3: this guy's our shortstop. All right, We're gonna grow.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Over your explosion, man, Like all those plays in the hole.
- 10:48Speaker 1: All I remember there was one Plane sixteen where like
- 10:51Speaker 1: out of nowhere, you caught the ball down the left
- 10:53Speaker 1: field line and like you got up and started showing emotion.
- 10:56Speaker 3: It was like that epic slide was You're like signature
- 10:59Speaker 3: that slide backhand.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just like crazy, how explosive you were. You are.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So we go into fifteen, we lose. Right, it's your
- 11:10Speaker 1: first year. You have an off season.
- 11:12Speaker 5: But hold on, hold on.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I got one thing that popped in my head. I
- 11:14Speaker 3: want to talk about. We've talked about this. The wild
- 11:17Speaker 3: card game at Pittsburgh. Remember that.
- 11:20Speaker 5: Remember the ball you booted and they made bases loaded.
- 11:24Speaker 2: That ball was one eight off the bat or one seven.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Smoked smoke.
- 11:31Speaker 3: But then we then that that it was the one
- 11:33Speaker 3: out the next pitch, absolutely, because I think about Starling
- 11:37Speaker 3: and how all that went down. You guys turned that
- 11:39Speaker 3: freaking double play to end it and you went nothing.
- 11:42Speaker 1: It was the loudest I've ever heard.
- 11:43Speaker 5: That was so loud.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I've never heard anything louder than that.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I mean, I like, okay, ball gets on you, right.
- 11:50Speaker 3: We still got a little bit of leave, but it's
- 11:51Speaker 3: like everybody's on their feet, like let's bring about like.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Chills right now.
- 11:54Speaker 3: That's one of my I think we've talked about this.
- 11:56Speaker 3: I think that's one of my or the Cubs probably
- 11:59Speaker 3: one of the big games in the organization's history, us
- 12:02Speaker 3: winning that game in Pittsburgh of just because of how
- 12:04Speaker 3: we took off in the second half and finished that
- 12:07Speaker 3: Pittsburgh was really hot and then went off obviously going
- 12:09Speaker 3: all the way to the championship series. But tell me
- 12:11Speaker 3: about that, that that wildcard game in your memory of
- 12:15Speaker 3: playing d in.
- 12:15Speaker 2: That so so that was like a kind of like
- 12:18Speaker 2: a full circle moment for me because my debut was
- 12:21Speaker 2: in Pittsburgh and to be back that that postseason, postseason
- 12:26Speaker 2: in the wildcard game was like a full circle moment
- 12:29Speaker 2: to me. But I just remember, I've never seen a
- 12:33Speaker 2: stadium packed out like that. You know, PNC Park has
- 12:36Speaker 2: you know the spiral, the spirals, things that are down
- 12:41Speaker 2: left the line. Yeah, and that was packed and people
- 12:44Speaker 2: hanging banners off that yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And I remember all blocked out, yeah, talking so much.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yea, it was Pittsburgh Pirates fans were brutal in fifteen.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And then I think it was Marte that hit that
- 12:58Speaker 2: ball that I booted the first time at one o seven.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Never heard of stadium go insane like that, and I'm like,
- 13:04Speaker 2: holy holy shit, these guys are on top of me
- 13:07Speaker 2: right now, just yelling in my hair. So I was,
- 13:09Speaker 2: you know, just gathering my thoughts. And then the next play.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I think I think it was was at the cutcheon.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It may have to check, Yeah, we'll have to check
- 13:16Speaker 3: the table on that, but I remember that that was
- 13:18Speaker 3: like that was I remember.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I remember it's silent. As soon as you call that ball,
- 13:23Speaker 5: it was silent.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I remember feeding it this starling and stolen just grabs it.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Sorry, that was in my brain about like your opportunity
- 13:35Speaker 3: came right back to you and being young, things could
- 13:40Speaker 3: have sped up and we just had that group of
- 13:41Speaker 3: like we just kept the guys, just kept showing up
- 13:45Speaker 3: and like what you're talking about just giving your all.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Things. Mistakes would have happened, But I thought that was
- 13:50Speaker 5: such a big play in that moment.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, that moment changed help shape us into the
- 13:56Speaker 1: lovable losers I'm sorry, the lovable winners expected winners and
- 14:00Speaker 1: the level of losers. Yeah, that inning in itself, that
- 14:03Speaker 1: game in itself transitioned us into what we now are champions.

- 15:59Speaker 1: The house, we have our hearts broken. In fifteen to
- 16:03Speaker 1: your first offseason to kind of dissect what the hell
- 16:06Speaker 1: just happened. You're an established big leader shortstop of Chicago Hubs.
- 16:11Speaker 1: We signed Jason Hayward that offseason. We're rolling into spring
- 16:14Speaker 1: training for me, I was expecting to win the World
- 16:17Speaker 1: Series for a player a year too. I want to
- 16:20Speaker 1: kind of see what was going through your head. Are
- 16:22Speaker 1: you just trying to establish yourself more? Do you understand
- 16:25Speaker 1: that we are going to win the World Series that
- 16:27Speaker 1: year or bust. Where's your mindset going in the spring?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Well, at that point, I'm just pretty much you know,
- 16:34Speaker 2: what do we got going on? Because I'm just you know,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I'm happy to be there, but at the same time,
- 16:41Speaker 2: I know I should be here, you know. And I
- 16:43Speaker 2: think going into that spring training was I had a
- 16:46Speaker 2: goal of breaking camp with these guys. I had a
- 16:47Speaker 2: pretty good chance of breaking camp. But I didn't know
- 16:51Speaker 2: the motto. I didn't know, you know what we're going
- 16:54Speaker 2: to be trying to stand behind and like put forth right.
- 16:58Speaker 1: How much did Joe mean to you? Playing for Joe,
- 17:01Speaker 1: lending him you know, all what he brought to the table,
- 17:05Speaker 1: What did.
- 17:05Speaker 5: He mean to you?
- 17:06Speaker 4: Think he meant?
- 17:07Speaker 2: You know, think about ninety five percent of it, you know,
- 17:11Speaker 2: he he made it to where the clubhouse.
- 17:14Speaker 4: You know, was not relaxed.
- 17:17Speaker 2: But you know, I felt like he had a good
- 17:19Speaker 2: understanding of everybody. I talked to Joe, you know, personally,
- 17:25Speaker 2: and he made me feel very welcome. He made me
- 17:28Speaker 2: feel comfortable. So and having his background of baseball background,
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm on board with him.
- 17:36Speaker 4: So whatever he's pushing, I'm right behind. Him.
- 17:39Speaker 5: Yeah, who did you lean on with that?
- 17:41Speaker 3: That that especially fifteen we talked about starling and then
- 17:45Speaker 3: it's going into sixteen, like who was your main boys
- 17:48Speaker 3: that you hung with?
- 17:50Speaker 2: It was me and CJ. Is Me and CJ for
- 17:52Speaker 2: the most part. But as far as that, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 2: I kind of was like a lone ranger.
- 17:57Speaker 4: You know.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I tried to get to know everybody, you know, you know,
- 18:00Speaker 2: I just felt like it's kind of my own, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 2: if that makes any sense.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Damn, sorry, no, no, no, Like you like you, you
- 18:09Speaker 6: just have you You're an observer and you're quiet and
- 18:12Speaker 6: always assessing the situation.
- 18:14Speaker 3: So it's like funny now like as we were talking earlier,
- 18:16Speaker 3: just like you know, you're so much older in experience.
- 18:20Speaker 1: You would sit we would sit in the dugouts. Sometimes
- 18:23Speaker 1: you ask me some questions and I'm like I would
- 18:26Speaker 1: be like, damn you saw that, or like you recognize
- 18:28Speaker 1: that or you pick that up and it's crazy. Jason
- 18:32Speaker 1: Domingez is like that from the Yankees now, Like he
- 18:35Speaker 1: would just he sits and observes and he reminds me
- 18:37Speaker 1: just like you where like he'll ask you a question
- 18:39Speaker 1: later on and be like oh shit, like they're watching.
- 18:42Speaker 1: So for me as a leader, like that taught me
- 18:45Speaker 1: even more. Like these young guys are watching it all
- 18:48Speaker 1: the time, So make sure your ship is you're you're
- 18:50Speaker 1: doing it properly with whatever you're doing, whether you're off
- 18:53Speaker 1: the field on the field, make sure you're you're doing
- 18:55Speaker 1: it right because everyone's watching.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Oh for sure. Like I think even you know, my my,
- 19:01Speaker 2: you know the twenty fifteen season, and I think me
- 19:05Speaker 2: and you and KB we made a few dove smash videos.
- 19:07Speaker 1: You know, yeah yeah, the doves smash.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 2: So so having all that, you know, I felt I
- 19:14Speaker 2: felt pretty much at home.
- 19:15Speaker 3: You know, yeah, what what I We haven't told this
- 19:18Speaker 3: story yet, but as the first infielder, we've had Rizzo
- 19:22Speaker 3: the three to zero.
- 19:23Speaker 5: You can't get ready?
- 19:24Speaker 1: Do you remember that on a three oh count? So
- 19:28Speaker 1: I'll take you back to it. You remember this when
- 19:31Speaker 1: I when I.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Say it, I just get so mad.
- 19:34Speaker 1: When it was a three oh count and you know
- 19:36Speaker 1: the guy wasn't swinging. I would whistle around the interview.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Yes, I do that to this day. I still do it.
- 19:42Speaker 4: And in the Mexican leu, I'm.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Like, hey, hey, yep, and you would we would statue
- 19:47Speaker 1: as an infield, so three oh count ninety nine percent
- 19:51Speaker 1: chance of the guy's not swinging, I'd whistle and I
- 19:54Speaker 1: get everyone and I would just widen up, not move.
- 19:58Speaker 1: The pitch would be thrown and we don't move, and
- 19:59Speaker 1: I be looking literally at uh. It started with Starlin,
- 20:02Speaker 1: but I was looking at start and be looking at
- 20:04Speaker 1: Addie KB, Zoe Briscott on board, and if someone didn't
- 20:08Speaker 1: do it, we would all get mad. If Hobby would
- 20:11Speaker 1: always do it with us too, but.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Just not getting ready.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It got to the there was a couple of times
- 20:15Speaker 1: where the guy swung, but we never we never got
- 20:18Speaker 1: burnt on it. But it was something that the coaches hated,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but the boys were all part of it, and it
- 20:24Speaker 1: made us close.
- 20:25Speaker 5: No flinching, no flinching, you guys, It just freaking stuck.
- 20:29Speaker 4: And if the old, if the whole info did it,
- 20:31Speaker 4: then we'd get.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Like a little golf Yeah, yeah, we'd give the little
- 20:34Speaker 3: golf clop.
- 20:34Speaker 1: And if one guy didn't do it because they thought
- 20:36Speaker 1: maybe he was swinging, we'd all get pissed at that guy.
- 20:38Speaker 5: I wanted to get that story.
- 20:39Speaker 3: In there because I know I'm like, you're asking us
- 20:42Speaker 3: the young buck over there, it's like, Nope, don't get ready, Bro.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I would do it all. I mean, to this day,
- 20:47Speaker 1: I would do it.
- 20:47Speaker 4: That's still doing it.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I love I love that about baby.
- 20:53Speaker 5: That's right.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You got to make it fun within the grind of
- 20:57Speaker 3: one sixty two and playing every.
- 20:58Speaker 5: Day, and you have your own little your own little
- 21:01Speaker 5: you know.
- 21:02Speaker 3: You got culture exactly things that get you through it.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Whenever it was threell, I couldn't wait for it to
- 21:06Speaker 3: be three. I'd be whistling right away and I'd be
- 21:09Speaker 3: doing it. And then sometimes Kate wouldn't want to do it,
- 21:10Speaker 3: but I'd need to do it.
- 21:12Speaker 1: We give the golf class sixteen twenty one homers. I
- 21:17Speaker 1: think the best stat in sixteen ninety five RBIs I believe, Bro.
- 21:22Speaker 1: I mean you're hitting what six or seventh? That's how
- 21:25Speaker 1: deep our lineup was.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Six.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, there we go.
- 21:29Speaker 5: I'd get that in for my little bit.
- 21:31Speaker 1: But that year you had such a monster year All Star.
- 21:36Speaker 1: We had the starting infield on the All Star Game
- 21:39Speaker 1: the Chicago Cubs, where you're starting in fielder in San Diego?
- 21:44Speaker 1: What was that experience like in San Diego being around
- 21:46Speaker 1: I mean your second year, but you're around all the
- 21:48Speaker 1: first time All Star. It was it was insane. There's
- 21:51Speaker 1: really so much, so much going on. I couldn't grasp
- 21:54Speaker 1: on to like one thing do. I'm just like who's
- 21:57Speaker 1: over here, who's next to me?
- 21:58Speaker 2: You know, just trying to talk to everyone really, But
- 22:03Speaker 2: it's just something that I'll never forget, like writing a
- 22:06Speaker 2: PJ for the first time over there, you know, the
- 22:08Speaker 2: family eating eating shrims on the.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Way over there, like you guys are we We had
- 22:14Speaker 3: two private planes to the All Star Game in twenty sixteen.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Wow, that was very We get to the playoffs, we're
- 22:23Speaker 1: rowing obviously when one hundred and two or three games,
- 22:27Speaker 1: you and I I remember stunk the first like four
- 22:32Speaker 1: or five games in the playoffs, right, Yeah, it wasn't
- 22:34Speaker 1: until Game three of the CS where you took off
- 22:38Speaker 1: and I think Game four for me.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Or y'all carried us. But I'll never forget.
- 22:43Speaker 3: It was yeah, game three, right, Game three or four
- 22:46Speaker 3: of the CS you went off and had three or
- 22:47Speaker 3: four hits homer, then game four another homer.
- 22:53Speaker 1: What what switched for you? What was that like in
- 22:55Speaker 1: sixteen before the World Series.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I think a lot of it had to do with
- 22:59Speaker 2: like speaking about that that game game three. I think
- 23:04Speaker 2: Joe came up to me at the Turtle while we're
- 23:06Speaker 2: taking VP, and he's like, hey.
- 23:09Speaker 5: How you feeling.
- 23:10Speaker 1: You know, you's just we were grinding.
- 23:13Speaker 2: You're putting together good at bats, but you know the
- 23:15Speaker 2: results aren't there. And like, Joe, I'm right there. I'm
- 23:18Speaker 2: right there, Like have faith, I'll show you I'm right there.
- 23:22Speaker 2: And then and then against I think it was Blenton.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I want to say Blent, and Blent had my number
- 23:27Speaker 2: all year. He had my number all year, and and
- 23:30Speaker 2: I did that and round a second, I looked at
- 23:32Speaker 2: Joe and this pumped and and you know, you know,
- 23:36Speaker 2: it's an awesome, awesome feeling.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I love watching your show emotion too, because you're just
- 23:40Speaker 3: so reserved. It's the fast when you got fire. We
- 23:42Speaker 3: were watching highlights coming in today of some of your games,
- 23:46Speaker 3: and it's just like your special highlights. Bro, when you
- 23:49Speaker 3: get fired up, You're like, it's like st.
- 23:54Speaker 1: But like again, these are the little things that Joe
- 23:57Speaker 1: did as our manager that no one knows about. Right,
- 24:00Speaker 1: that little conversation with you was it was probably everything
- 24:04Speaker 1: for you because your manager's talking to you, just checking
- 24:07Speaker 1: in on you. Where sometimes when you when you stink.
- 24:09Speaker 1: In baseball, you feel like you are on an island
- 24:12Speaker 1: by yourself. And that's probably in life, right, Like sometimes
- 24:14Speaker 1: you feel like you're on island. So when someone just
- 24:17Speaker 1: comes in, especially your manager, and just gives you that
- 24:19Speaker 1: little pat on the ass, like hey, we got this,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you take off, you carried us the rest of the
- 24:25Speaker 1: way through that series and then onto the World Series.
- 24:29Speaker 1: When we turned the double play against Pueague, that was
- 24:33Speaker 1: you right, the little chopper to you, to Hobby, to
- 24:38Speaker 1: me right.
- 24:38Speaker 5: You see remiss he remained it right chest high.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Well, that ball gets hit you or in the ninth inning,
- 24:45Speaker 1: what do you got, Just don't fuck it up.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Oh my gods, that's how I thought, you know, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 2: And and the you know, the playing surface on all
- 24:56Speaker 2: these fields were just amazing, you know. And the way
- 24:58Speaker 2: that the ball hit I think I think I was
- 25:01Speaker 2: kind of used to like having like a little lip
- 25:03Speaker 2: right before the dirt starts in the infilled and I
- 25:07Speaker 2: was expecting it to be like up here, and it.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Just came like just right here.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Just Taylor made throw it and as it bro that
- 25:15Speaker 3: part of that regally was rocking. When we clinched to
- 25:18Speaker 3: go to the World Series facing Kershaw Game six, we
- 25:21Speaker 3: went to Clinch.
- 25:22Speaker 1: To go to the World Series. It was like, dude,
- 25:25Speaker 1: we had thought, at least the fans had thought we
- 25:27Speaker 1: had won the World Series right then and there.
- 25:29Speaker 5: When I thought we that was a big one.
- 25:31Speaker 3: I thought from like I was done with my career
- 25:35Speaker 3: after this seat that season, and we had went to
- 25:37Speaker 3: the CS year before and didn't you know, we got swept,
- 25:40Speaker 3: and so I thought that was the next That was like, Okay.
- 25:43Speaker 5: We're going the World Series. It hadn't happened around here.
- 25:45Speaker 5: That was to me. Now, it's just like go play right.
- 25:48Speaker 3: There was no pressure in going to to the World Series,
- 25:51Speaker 3: but I felt a little bit of pressure.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Do you feeling you have a feel?
- 25:55Speaker 3: I thought Joe did a good job of keeping the
- 25:56Speaker 3: pressure out of the clubhouse. I never felt like we
- 25:59Speaker 3: had a lot of like eyes on us from a
- 26:02Speaker 3: you didn't feel one hundred and eight years of not
- 26:04Speaker 3: wait and all the oats and yeah black cats, yeah
- 26:07Speaker 3: and uh Bartman and all that shit.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Yeah that creep into you at all.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Just I try my best to just block everything out,
- 26:14Speaker 2: like literally literally I would. I would go from the
- 26:18Speaker 2: hotel or the apartment wherever we're at off in the car,
- 26:22Speaker 2: drive be at the field and then that's it, like
- 26:25Speaker 2: like I got to come to work. Like I'm not
- 26:27Speaker 2: looking into social media or trying to buy into any
- 26:30Speaker 2: of this because you know, I, you know, I believe
- 26:33Speaker 2: that I was a big part of what's going to
- 26:36Speaker 2: be history, you know.
- 26:38Speaker 1: So I looked at it like that, well and that group.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I thought I had never gotten to the field so
- 26:45Speaker 3: early with a group I think in my whole career
- 26:47Speaker 3: than maybe when I was a rookie, because I loved
- 26:49Speaker 3: going to work. So we would show up really early
- 26:51Speaker 3: and hang out and just do our do our routine
- 26:53Speaker 3: you talked about. I remember sitting on the bench one
- 26:56Speaker 3: day one of your days off, and you're talking about
- 26:59Speaker 3: your routine you got early on with how you ran
- 27:02Speaker 3: through ground balls. You still have that same same routine
- 27:05Speaker 3: from your from your minor league days with the a'es.
- 27:08Speaker 2: It's definitely in there. It's definitely in there. But yeah, yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 2: now that I'm a little older, I assessed my body
- 27:14Speaker 2: and how it feels now and I'm retired, and I
- 27:19Speaker 2: do anything that's according to you know what, what I
- 27:22Speaker 2: know that I need to do to be ready for
- 27:23Speaker 2: the game.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Who who taught your who taught you your routine as
- 27:27Speaker 1: a big leaguer, because I mean routines always are evolving
- 27:30Speaker 1: as a big leaguer. But where did you solidify it
- 27:33Speaker 1: or when do you feel like you solidified it?
- 27:36Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I was just shy of five
- 27:39Speaker 2: years in the show, so you know, I think I
- 27:41Speaker 2: think I was still trying to like learn a lot
- 27:44Speaker 2: of a lot of new things. But it pretty much,
- 27:48Speaker 2: you know, just watching other players and seeing how they
- 27:50Speaker 2: go about their routine. You know, I'm not taking what
- 27:53Speaker 2: makes this guy, you know good, It's just it's just
- 27:55Speaker 2: I see how they go about their business. You know,
- 27:57Speaker 2: if they stop by the gym here for ten minutes
- 27:59Speaker 2: or whatever, then you know, and then they had to
- 28:01Speaker 2: go out and throw. I remember I talked to Chavez
- 28:05Speaker 2: was his name, and he was like, you know, I
- 28:07Speaker 2: go into the game where I feel like I don't
- 28:10Speaker 2: have to stretch that much. You know, I want to
- 28:12Speaker 2: feel like I'm like fifty to sixty five percent limber,
- 28:16Speaker 2: and then and then once I throw pitch ten, now
- 28:19Speaker 2: I'm ready to go.
- 28:20Speaker 4: You know.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Jesse Chavis did it for a long time. Yeah, he
- 28:23Speaker 1: loved loved Shabby in Atlanta loved Coronas, two Coronas. After
- 28:27Speaker 1: every game, Jesse Chavas shout.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Out, So we're going to the World Series, are you
- 28:32Speaker 3: just like on Cloud nine or like, I know we
- 28:35Speaker 3: all were.
- 28:36Speaker 5: What what You've got all the family in Yeah?
- 28:38Speaker 1: Bro, you're from fucking Pensacola, right, I remember you saying
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm from Pensacola and playing the World Series. No Florida
- 28:45Speaker 1: boys right here and all Florida.
- 28:47Speaker 5: That's right.
- 28:48Speaker 1: These are like the Florida men in the north part
- 28:50Speaker 1: of Florida. The South Florida is a whole different breed.
- 28:53Speaker 5: So true. It stops right after like Orlando.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's when the normal people are south and
- 28:58Speaker 1: then you get the Florida guys.
- 29:00Speaker 5: James, this is gut. Yeah, so you got your whole
- 29:03Speaker 5: the whole family in World Series. Like what's like? What's that? Like?
- 29:08Speaker 3: I remember I got to go a couple of years
- 29:11Speaker 3: earlier with Boston. I was a freaking nervous wreck. I
- 29:13Speaker 3: didn't even eat lunch before game one and I was starting,
- 29:16Speaker 3: So it was like, what was that?
- 29:17Speaker 5: What was that first game for you?
- 29:19Speaker 2: Like it's a bit of it's a bit of that. Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 2: for sure, I don't know, man, it was kind of cold.
- 29:25Speaker 2: It was kind of cold Game one, Like, I just
- 29:28Speaker 2: wanted to do anything that would take my mind off
- 29:31Speaker 2: of how nervous I was.
- 29:32Speaker 4: You know.
- 29:33Speaker 2: So I think me and Matt Caesar we threw football.
- 29:36Speaker 2: We threw football, you know, we both have football backgrounds,
- 29:39Speaker 2: and I believe that that loosened me up. And also
- 29:44Speaker 2: like dancing in the dugout too, you know, moonwalking, air
- 29:47Speaker 2: walking in the dugout kind of like loosened me up too.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Best dancer on the team by far, by far, by far,
- 29:54Speaker 1: we move by far. Yeah, we go down three to.
- 29:58Speaker 5: One, even though I did finish second with Dancing with
- 30:00Speaker 5: the Stars. That's what I gets out. Hey, give some
- 30:03Speaker 5: of that.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah, this is interview is about you.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, did get that?
- 30:10Speaker 1: We go down, we get swept in fifteen? Right, we
- 30:12Speaker 1: go down three to one and sixteen. What what were
- 30:16Speaker 1: you thinking? Did you think we can come back? Why
- 30:19Speaker 1: did you think we can come back? Like? What was
- 30:22Speaker 1: our starting shortstops mentality?
- 30:24Speaker 5: There?
- 30:25Speaker 1: Well?
- 30:26Speaker 2: Well, like I you know, I really didn't come from
- 30:29Speaker 2: you know, much of anything, you know, and like I've
- 30:32Speaker 2: been saying, you know, just to be there was was great.
- 30:34Speaker 2: But you know, growing up, I felt like my back
- 30:38Speaker 2: was always against the wall because my family has sacrificed
- 30:41Speaker 2: so much for me, you know, to put me in
- 30:43Speaker 2: a certain situation so you know, I can live.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Out my dream.
- 30:47Speaker 2: So being down three to one, it was somewhat a
- 30:51Speaker 2: familiar feeling to me. I didn't know how great of
- 30:55Speaker 2: a scale it was, but for me, it felt like
- 30:57Speaker 2: a similar feeling. And and it was just the only
- 31:01Speaker 2: way that you get out of it is if you
- 31:02Speaker 2: start biting.
- 31:03Speaker 5: You know.
- 31:03Speaker 4: I knew that. I knew that.
- 31:05Speaker 2: You know, if we're gonna win, each person's gonna have
- 31:07Speaker 2: to take their bite. Each person have to take their bite.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to take three bytes. Riz might have
- 31:11Speaker 2: to take five bytes, you know. And and that's what's
- 31:14Speaker 2: impressing about this whole thing, because because how like built
- 31:19Speaker 2: up we were as individually as players like you, like
- 31:24Speaker 2: you two guys, Like, what's the pressure like for you
- 31:27Speaker 2: because you are the face of the Cubs and and
- 31:31Speaker 2: you're pretty much, you know, Johnny's guy, and you're making
- 31:36Speaker 2: the clubhouse a better a better environment, you know, Like,
- 31:39Speaker 2: how was it for you guys?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it was heavy for sure, right, we were expecting
- 31:44Speaker 1: to win we know we can. For me, I knew
- 31:47Speaker 1: Game five was going to be the hardest game. I
- 31:49Speaker 1: thought we would roll in Game six like we did,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and then Game seven will be a crap shoot. That
- 31:53Speaker 1: was my mentality. So after we lost, I was just
- 31:56Speaker 1: I remember talking to Tim Buss Bussy. I was like,
- 31:59Speaker 1: we're not We're not fucking doing this again. Like the
- 32:01Speaker 1: next day we're putting Rocky on. We had like Rocky one, two, three,
- 32:04Speaker 1: four or five, all of them on all the screens.
- 32:07Speaker 1: We're not fucking going down like this playing Rocky music before.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Just kind of like you said, like you throw the football.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I was just trying to find something else to get
- 32:16Speaker 1: off of baseball. So when I did play and go,
- 32:19Speaker 1: I was able to be locked in right and eliminate
- 32:22Speaker 1: all the noise, and once Game five started, that was
- 32:26Speaker 1: probably our hardest game, right, other than the eighth, ninth, tenth,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and Cleveland, but you hit a twour on homer in
- 32:32Speaker 1: that game. We win three two right. Game five, I mean.
- 32:36Speaker 5: That was my favorite game.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I remember I think after Game four, I don't know
- 32:40Speaker 3: who it was, with my back to my lockers and
- 32:42Speaker 3: they came in and through their glove right like through
- 32:44Speaker 3: and I remember saying Joe reminded me of this that
- 32:47Speaker 3: I was like, hey, don't they may give their left
- 32:50Speaker 3: not to be and.
- 32:52Speaker 1: You said, we've won three games in row so many
- 32:54Speaker 1: times this year. Yeah, He's like, why aren't we going
- 32:56Speaker 1: to fuck it?
- 32:56Speaker 3: And I hadn't got to play since Game one, so
- 32:58Speaker 3: I couldn't wait to start at Wrigley, you know, here
- 33:01Speaker 3: in Chicago. So that was like my like, wait a minute,
- 33:05Speaker 3: this is my dream game, Like this maybe my last
- 33:07Speaker 3: game I'm starting.
- 33:07Speaker 5: I get to catch less.
- 33:08Speaker 3: So I was like already, like I can't wait to
- 33:11Speaker 3: come out with his music, Lester's music playing and do.
- 33:14Speaker 5: All that in front of our home fans. So it's
- 33:16Speaker 5: the same thing.
- 33:17Speaker 3: Like I was nervous for sure, but I couldn't wait
- 33:20Speaker 3: for that moment because I was like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 33:22Speaker 3: get to play in a World Series game in Chicago
- 33:24Speaker 3: and start only game one at Wrigley in however many years.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:29Speaker 1: But where you're saying about everyone taking a bite, that's
- 33:32Speaker 1: what made our team so special is that without literally
- 33:37Speaker 1: everyone from our coaching staff from the lowest level Otis
- 33:42Speaker 1: and his crew to the highest level of Joe's staff
- 33:45Speaker 1: and all the players. Without one of those personnel, we
- 33:49Speaker 1: don't win. Because that's how much every single person meant
- 33:53Speaker 1: to someone on our team. And that's why the team
- 33:55Speaker 1: is so special and we'll be celebrated forever.
- 33:57Speaker 5: We talk about that puzzle. Everybody mattered.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Literally, like you pick out one guy from that roster and.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I'm tagging up yeah, like petronk, Like that is something
- 34:05Speaker 3: that he learned in the minor leagues, right, Like how baseball?
- 34:09Speaker 5: You know, you look at the World Series.
- 34:10Speaker 3: It just happened, and the guy third for Toronto doesn't
- 34:14Speaker 3: get this big secondary and then they you know.
- 34:17Speaker 1: That close, man, I'm that close, you know what I mean?
- 34:19Speaker 1: Game literally literally that's the difference between winning and losing.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And everyone's like, oh, why don't you you know? Hardly
- 34:24Speaker 1: is the win? Right, So we go into game six. Now,
- 34:28Speaker 1: you hit the two run homer in Game five, we win.
- 34:30Speaker 1: We go to Cleveland. Game six, you put on a
- 34:34Speaker 1: display bomb Grand Slam, Grand Slam.
- 34:37Speaker 5: I was a freaking bomb.
- 34:39Speaker 3: World Series Grand Slam. That year you led I don't
- 34:43Speaker 3: want to get this thirteen thirteen RB eyes.
- 34:45Speaker 1: You led the team with thirteen RB eyes in the postseason.
- 34:48Speaker 1: But that year, during the regular season, you led the
- 34:51Speaker 1: league in bases loaded hits. You had nine hits with
- 34:54Speaker 1: twenty four rbiys of the basis loaded.
- 34:56Speaker 4: You know that.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Yeah, all major League baseball.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I'm man in a big spot. In Game six, I
- 35:02Speaker 1: think we were up maybe three nothing or four nothing
- 35:05Speaker 1: at the time you hit a granny. I think you
- 35:07Speaker 1: put up a seven nothing. You know how big that was?
- 35:11Speaker 1: What was going like that moment, World Series Grand Slam
- 35:14Speaker 1: were basically on our way to go into Game seven,
- 35:17Speaker 1: like floating around the bases, well yeah.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I couldn't fill my legs. I just
- 35:23Speaker 2: remember just just screaming, man, kind of rounding first base
- 35:28Speaker 2: and you know, kind of like side eyeing the dugout.
- 35:31Speaker 4: To see if they're a HiPE.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Of course they're hive like, and then rounding first base,
- 35:36Speaker 2: I see I see Lindor, I see Kipness, I see Lindor,
- 35:40Speaker 2: and I'm just yelling, like right in front of him, dude,
- 35:42Speaker 2: and like emotions like it was just so sweet, man,
- 35:46Speaker 2: it was so sweet. And I remember I remember like
- 35:48Speaker 2: stepping on third base, I heard like a chime. It
- 35:51Speaker 2: said ding, it said ding, And I was like, dude,
- 35:54Speaker 2: that was sweet. That was really sweet. After I get
- 35:57Speaker 2: done slapping hands with everybody, I go back to that moment.
- 36:00Speaker 2: I'm like and like I'm praying and I'm looking up
- 36:02Speaker 2: at the Lord and I hear like a Dan again.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I'm like, dude, that's not the last thing I'm going
- 36:07Speaker 2: to hear tonight or this series. That's not the last thing.
- 36:10Speaker 2: And I would hear that dan throughout the rest of
- 36:14Speaker 2: you know, from six to seven. Wow, it's pretty cool. Wow,
- 36:17Speaker 2: really cool. We get what a moment. We win game six, right,
- 36:21Speaker 2: we go to game seven. The games is not un
- 36:22Speaker 2: till eight o'clock. So that night took forever or that
- 36:26Speaker 2: day to get down to k forever for me.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I remember, were you part of the Mario Kart crew?
- 36:31Speaker 4: I was.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I was literally like a locker straight looking straight on everyone.
- 36:35Speaker 1: We're playing Mario Kart pre games.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Tony is the theme of that team.
- 36:42Speaker 1: We in game seven a handful of us I know
- 36:45Speaker 1: it is Deck's KB and then the fourth player was
- 36:48Speaker 1: usually Roving. We played Mario Kart because in Cleveland they
- 36:52Speaker 1: had a shout out to Willie. He had an arcade
- 36:55Speaker 1: game system there. We all had Mario Kart playing and
- 36:58Speaker 1: it was that's what we did before games. We didn't
- 37:00Speaker 1: go out. I didn't go out one time for VP
- 37:02Speaker 1: in the World Series because the soap opera of the
- 37:05Speaker 1: media and everything. I just mined my own, played Mario
- 37:08Speaker 1: Kart until about fifty minutes before the game, took a shower,
- 37:12Speaker 1: went down to the cage, got ready to go. That's
- 37:15Speaker 1: how I locked in. How did you lock in for
- 37:18Speaker 1: that game? Other than seeing me dance naked, It's not
- 37:21Speaker 1: about me.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I would just say. I would just say, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: I pretty much was just kind of in my locker.
- 37:27Speaker 2: You know, I would throw football. I would throw football
- 37:29Speaker 2: for a little bit. I think I did take VP.
- 37:32Speaker 5: You know.
- 37:32Speaker 2: I tried to take a hot shower. The showers weren't working,
- 37:35Speaker 2: that's right, the showers were cold.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Yeah, they iced us, They tried iceing us. I remember
- 37:40Speaker 1: wearing Wally out about that.
- 37:42Speaker 5: I didn't remember that.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I've never seen some shit like that. And then
- 37:45Speaker 2: I started playing in Mexico.
- 37:46Speaker 4: It happens all the time.
- 37:49Speaker 2: But yeah, it was pretty much was you know, football,
- 37:54Speaker 2: you know, just watching the guys, listening to music and
- 37:56Speaker 2: just being in my locker whetherever I was facing out
- 37:59Speaker 2: or facing in, just locking in and visualizing, you know,
- 38:04Speaker 2: visualizing cit scenarios and all that stuff.
- 38:08Speaker 1: So we we were rolling right, we're winning. Let's just
- 38:12Speaker 1: get right to ra hits that home run. What was
- 38:16Speaker 1: going through your head there? Take us through that, and
- 38:19Speaker 1: then take us to the rain delay and how you
- 38:21Speaker 1: felt with all that.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, So so I remember I was like, there's no
- 38:26Speaker 2: fucking way, There's no fucking way. There's two people on, like,
- 38:29Speaker 2: there's the fucking way, Chapman, dude, Like I think it
- 38:35Speaker 2: was like a low outside fastball and just you know whatever,
- 38:39Speaker 2: and home ern. I'm like, dude, you gotta be fucking
- 38:41Speaker 2: kidding me right now there there is literally no way.
- 38:44Speaker 6: And and and.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Then that's the second separate stadium.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Yeah, first to Pittsburgh. Yeah, you bron the bronze there.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that. And and I'm just like, dude,
- 38:56Speaker 2: how does this even happen? Like you you can't write this.
- 38:59Speaker 2: And then and then would go into the delay, and
- 39:02Speaker 2: I kind of remember just everyone like.
- 39:03Speaker 4: Kind of like going throwing the own way.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I already was in the gym because it wasn't far
- 39:10Speaker 2: from where like we had to walk out right there.
- 39:13Speaker 2: And I remember being in the squad rack on like
- 39:16Speaker 2: a medicine ball and uh. And I remember Jay Hey
- 39:20Speaker 2: like pull pulling, pulling people into the gym, and he
- 39:24Speaker 2: said what I had to say to say. And you know,
- 39:27Speaker 2: during that moment, like everyone everyone's kind of filling down.
- 39:31Speaker 4: I don't I mean, I don't care who you are.
- 39:32Speaker 4: Everyone's filling down.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Like everyone were ghosts. We were ghosts. And that ninth inning,
- 39:37Speaker 1: before that rain delay, I remember looking around, everyone was
- 39:40Speaker 1: white as a ghost. Like the fact that Chapman, Ali
- 39:43Speaker 1: said is probably in every episode. The fact that Chapman
- 39:45Speaker 1: got through that ninth inning and didn't give it up
- 39:48Speaker 1: is the unsung moment.
- 39:50Speaker 5: Well, Meggi came in and started spinning a ton and
- 39:52Speaker 5: he dealt.
- 39:53Speaker 3: I remember that. I read like catching. I came out
- 39:55Speaker 3: of the game and Meggie came in and like just
- 39:58Speaker 3: changed the way Chappie was pitched and the whole thing.
- 40:01Speaker 3: He like, I thought that was a big piece.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Come back out after that too, like strapped it on.
- 40:05Speaker 2: You know, that's you know, that's hard, he's gas, he's thrown.
- 40:10Speaker 1: He had an eight out saving game five. He was
- 40:12Speaker 1: in there in game six, probably a little too long.
- 40:15Speaker 1: And he comes in game seven and leaves it on
- 40:17Speaker 1: the line. But during the during the speech. What do
- 40:20Speaker 1: you remember most during it? We're all we're all coming
- 40:23Speaker 1: together in that moment.
- 40:24Speaker 4: It's just Jay Hay's words. Man.
- 40:26Speaker 2: You know, like like you hear when you hear Jay speak,
- 40:30Speaker 2: like you listen because because you're not going to meet
- 40:33Speaker 2: anybody who's as real as Jay.
- 40:35Speaker 4: You know, he's he's.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Been around the block, you know, he he knows some people,
- 40:39Speaker 2: he knows his stuff, and and when he talks like
- 40:41Speaker 2: there's a calmness about him, but there's also you know,
- 40:44Speaker 2: he's holding you accountable, but he's also holding himself accountable,
- 40:48Speaker 2: and he expects the best out of you, just like
- 40:50Speaker 2: you Rozzie and Johnny Leinster, they'll get in your ass,
- 40:53Speaker 2: you know.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, j that was that was such an epic,
- 40:57Speaker 3: epic kind of call because like you said that, that's
- 41:00Speaker 3: what I remember is Jay Hay doesn't speak a lot, right,
- 41:03Speaker 3: and when he does, you listen. And when he called
- 41:05Speaker 3: him me and I'm like, oh, I can't wait to
- 41:06Speaker 3: hear what this man has to say, because you know
- 41:10Speaker 3: he doesn't do that a whole lot. You know, he'll
- 41:12Speaker 3: usually do it in private. But I remember him talking
- 41:14Speaker 3: about how many games we won and how we played
- 41:17Speaker 3: for each other and like no other stuff.
- 41:19Speaker 5: And we walked out of that gym and that weight.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Room and I felt like it was it's coming to
- 41:26Speaker 1: me now the speech that Kevin O'shay gave in The
- 41:29Speaker 1: Little Giants about one time.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I walked out of that that weight room feeling like
- 41:35Speaker 3: like the Little Giants like, yeah, we can do this
- 41:37Speaker 3: one time.
- 41:39Speaker 1: And obviously we go to win. What what did winning
- 41:42Speaker 1: do for you in your life? What did it teach you?
- 41:46Speaker 1: How did you celebrate? Who did you think of when
- 41:49Speaker 1: we won? Like take us through all of it.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Just ever since I was a kid man, I had
- 41:56Speaker 2: a dream of winning the World Series.
- 41:58Speaker 4: You know.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I remember were like playing out scenarios in my head
- 42:02Speaker 2: and playing ball on the wall and you know, I'm
- 42:04Speaker 2: playing for Boston and you know I have no more
- 42:08Speaker 2: on first and you know this guy on second. I
- 42:10Speaker 2: got on third and you know we're down two runs,
- 42:13Speaker 2: three runs, and I got to hit a grand slam,
- 42:15Speaker 2: you know, to you know, but I think I think
- 42:17Speaker 2: what what came out most of it was was the
- 42:21Speaker 2: little kid in me, you know, was so proud. I
- 42:25Speaker 2: was so proud of myself of how hard I worked. Uh,
- 42:28Speaker 2: the adversity that I overcame the sacrifice that it took
- 42:33Speaker 2: to get there. I'm I'm a family guy, and and
- 42:37Speaker 2: to be away from my family was was heartbreaking, you know.
- 42:42Speaker 2: But to have the family there, you know, at the
- 42:44Speaker 2: World Series, it's like, dude, this is the greatest feeling ever.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's I mean it changes all of our lives.
- 42:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:52Speaker 1: And you are You've you've gone on to play in Korea,
- 42:58Speaker 1: to play in Mexico. What did you take being a
- 43:02Speaker 1: champion being overseas? I can imagine a lot of the
- 43:05Speaker 1: Koreans they love baseball asking about what sixteen was like
- 43:08Speaker 1: playing in mex So, I can imagine what was that like?
- 43:11Speaker 1: Talking about that now ten years later, still like it's
- 43:16Speaker 1: like it's yesterday. So how talking to people about it?
- 43:19Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 43:20Speaker 3: And also like your career are you talking earlier? Had
- 43:22Speaker 3: five and a half years in the show, and then
- 43:23Speaker 3: you go through some adversity personally having to carry that
- 43:26Speaker 3: on to I still want to play baseball.
- 43:29Speaker 5: I'm a really good baseball player. Like you, You've.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Run the gamut from first rounder to World Series champion
- 43:34Speaker 3: to a lot of adversity to continue to play baseball
- 43:37Speaker 3: and your family, Like, like you've learned a lot of lessons,
- 43:41Speaker 3: like I think our viewers need to know, like how
- 43:45Speaker 3: how you overcome the greatness, the darkness, the darkness. And
- 43:50Speaker 3: then back to Bro, You've got four kids and like
- 43:53Speaker 3: you had aged a bit and you're you're still playing baseball.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Like that's that's spectacular and.
- 43:57Speaker 3: A lot of a lot of people, I think give
- 44:00Speaker 3: up when things the road gets hard or they hit
- 44:03Speaker 3: some adversity like you did. Bro, you look happier you
- 44:05Speaker 3: walked in that room. Bro, I had seen you smile
- 44:08Speaker 3: that big. It lit me up.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think it was a lot about
- 44:12Speaker 2: how I was raised. You know, growing up I had
- 44:15Speaker 2: I had loving parents that that took care of me.
- 44:19Speaker 2: That didn't have much, but they've but they've always sacrificed
- 44:22Speaker 2: for my better future. I think that's what That's what
- 44:27Speaker 2: kind of like I tapped into to get me over
- 44:30Speaker 2: those you know, hurdles. But when guys asked me about
- 44:34Speaker 2: the twenty sixteen team, man like like I may have
- 44:37Speaker 2: the worst day and they asked me about that, and
- 44:39Speaker 2: then I'm just smiling, ear to ear winning change.
- 44:43Speaker 5: We want to do this, That's why we want to
- 44:45Speaker 5: do this.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Now everybody's heard everybody's story and you know, this is
- 44:49Speaker 3: so much fun for us, and like getting back here
- 44:53Speaker 3: and celebrating with the boys is like we we've been
- 44:55Speaker 3: playing this for a little while, and it's like this
- 44:57Speaker 3: is this is our kind of to get back and
- 45:00Speaker 3: just tell all the stories and relive this stuff because
- 45:02Speaker 3: we it's family.
- 45:04Speaker 5: We're all family forever forever.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Well winning does do you have any stories either on
- 45:10Speaker 1: field off field that you remember that it's just like
- 45:13Speaker 1: you laugh about favorite game.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Moment, like yeah, yeah, so after game game five, we're
- 45:20Speaker 2: still home.
- 45:21Speaker 4: I think we fly out November first.
- 45:23Speaker 5: I want to say, yeah, after we wait Tricker Treating?
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah, right, it was. It was Halloween. It was Halloween, Jill,
- 45:28Speaker 3: let's go Tricker Treating. We flew out that night.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he said, go trick or treat. So I remember
- 45:32Speaker 2: I had a costume. I had a Raphael. I was
- 45:35Speaker 2: Raphael and I was on the Ninja Turtle Ninja Turtles.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I actually was on this street and one of my
- 45:41Speaker 2: favorite places to go to was Sluggers. Yeah, and uh
- 45:44Speaker 2: and me and my buds we rolled over to Sluggers
- 45:47Speaker 2: and I asked the owner, Rich, can I take some
- 45:50Speaker 2: hacks in the cage no hacks in the cage, and
- 45:53Speaker 2: I was in the cage for two hours.
- 45:55Speaker 4: I was in the cage for two hours.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Were intoxicated in my Ninja turtlesya plays?
- 46:02Speaker 3: Yeah that's sick, Branny. No ship did did? People were
- 46:07Speaker 3: fans there? Did they know as you?
- 46:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so I'm you know, I don't really wait
- 46:12Speaker 2: in the line, but but there was a little line there,
- 46:14Speaker 2: and I had my mask on, but I guess people
- 46:17Speaker 2: knew me from my frame, you know. I guess short
- 46:20Speaker 2: and stocky and yeah, good looking. Yeah, the green skin
- 46:24Speaker 2: and everything and uh and uh kind of kind of
- 46:28Speaker 2: went up and then the cages were upstairs and they're
- 46:31Speaker 2: like that is that him?
- 46:32Speaker 4: Like, yeah, I'm taking taking bad practice two hours.
- 46:35Speaker 1: After game after this, but this is the testament. And
- 46:39Speaker 1: I'm happy you share that because that's how loose our
- 46:41Speaker 1: team was, and that the fact that our second year
- 46:45Speaker 1: shortstop felt comfortable enough to.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Go and do that, Because when you go and do that,
- 46:51Speaker 3: there's stuff in your head.
- 46:52Speaker 1: We're like, well, if this gets out one of my teammates,
- 46:54Speaker 1: but no, because he didn't worry about that, because if
- 46:56Speaker 1: that did get out, we'd be like, oh fuck, yeah,
- 46:58Speaker 1: why didn't you invite us, right, and I'm kind of
- 47:00Speaker 1: pissed it in about us, But uh, you were trick
- 47:02Speaker 1: or treating.
- 47:03Speaker 5: I was sure you have the kids. I was over
- 47:04Speaker 5: with Dead Demp's house trick or treating.
- 47:06Speaker 1: But those are the things where like, that's how loose
- 47:08Speaker 1: our team was. We're down three to one, we.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Win the biggest game of the series at the point
- 47:13Speaker 3: at that time, we go trick or treat and you
- 47:16Speaker 3: go to sluggers and you're hitting the cage. That's and
- 47:18Speaker 3: then amazing and then a Grand Slam next game.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's will I think.
- 47:22Speaker 3: I think it's one of the most important things that
- 47:24Speaker 3: I learned in my career about I came up in
- 47:26Speaker 3: a time where veterans just hammered the young guys, right, hammered, hammered,
- 47:31Speaker 3: And so the fact we had such a young group
- 47:34Speaker 3: that felt comfortable to be themselves in their own skin,
- 47:37Speaker 3: I thought that was a big part of our group.
- 47:39Speaker 5: And something that that taught me.
- 47:40Speaker 3: Is like, no, no, we need KB Schwarbert, Addy Hobby,
- 47:45Speaker 3: we need all these guys out more, all these guys
- 47:47Speaker 3: to feel comfortable to be here, to be themselves, because
- 47:50Speaker 3: we're gonna get the best out of them.
- 47:51Speaker 5: And yeah, I love telling these stories.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Ten years later, we are World Series Reunion, expecting winners.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Clubs are gonna be good again this year. Addie, I'm
- 48:04Speaker 1: happy for you man. You seem like you're in a
- 48:05Speaker 1: great place. Thank you for sitting down with us. We
- 48:09Speaker 1: love you. We're champions forever. No one can take that away.
- 48:11Speaker 5: Thanks for my ring Broye.
- 48:13Speaker 4: I appreciate you, guys.
- 48:14Speaker 2: And you know, one thing that I've always got from
- 48:18Speaker 2: that group is no matter what we're.
- 48:20Speaker 5: Good, we are. That's right, no matter what. Good stuff,
- 48:25Speaker 5: good stuff, good stuff.
- 48:40Speaker 4: A
