- 5:55Speaker 7: just a few weeks away, literally.
- 5:58Speaker 2: A month away, and we are ready to go.
- 6:04Speaker 7: All right, everybody, we are back Vince Wright, sports governor
- 6:07Speaker 7: Sports Done Right Podcast and joining.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Us once again.
- 6:11Speaker 7: Friend of the show, friend of the podcast, Tony Liebert,
- 6:15Speaker 7: and I just call him to go for expert.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I mean, the guy knows everything.
- 6:19Speaker 7: He is in the bowels of the stadium and knows everybody,
- 6:24Speaker 7: and he is the contact for Gopher football. So Tony,
- 6:28Speaker 7: thank you for joining us once again. How you been
- 6:30Speaker 7: doing this offseason?
- 6:32Speaker 9: Thanks for having me, Vince. I've been doing great. It's
- 6:36Speaker 9: been a nice Minnesota summer.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It really has weatherwise.
- 6:40Speaker 7: I mean, you know, I'd rather be hot and cold,
- 6:42Speaker 7: so even you know, with the recent hot streak and stuff.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Hey man, I'm taking this over winter any day.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I agree with that, all.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Right, Okay, so we got Tony for a few minutes, Skase,
- 6:53Speaker 7: so we're just gonna jump into it. We are just
- 6:56Speaker 7: over a month away from Gopher football, college football in general,
- 7:01Speaker 7: and it just kind of hit me, folks, it's like, man,
- 7:03Speaker 7: we gotta we gotta get up the snuff here, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 7: kind of taking the summer off from the podcast a
- 7:08Speaker 7: little bit, so reached out to Tony. He was nice
- 7:11Speaker 7: enough to join us today. So let's just start with
- 7:14Speaker 7: the big question. It's always you know, the quarterback, the quarterback,
- 7:18Speaker 7: the quarterback.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Drake's in the house.
- 7:21Speaker 7: Now and it is his show and you know, former
- 7:25Speaker 7: Arkansas Player of the Year and then all the kudos
- 7:27Speaker 7: that went with him. So just kind of give us
- 7:31Speaker 7: your thoughts early on from what you've seen of him, Tony,
- 7:34Speaker 7: and just kind of, you know, a little bit of
- 7:35Speaker 7: background for people who aren't familiar with Drake Lindsey.
- 7:40Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it's it's super interesting and it's it's
- 7:43Speaker 9: exciting because, i mean, just on the surface, like you mentioned,
- 7:48Speaker 9: he was a very accomplished high school player, six foot five,
- 7:52Speaker 9: huge arm gunslinger type of mentality. And for a program
- 7:59Speaker 9: like to Go, when you have a guy like that
- 8:01Speaker 9: who already earns the starting job as a retir freshman,
- 8:05Speaker 9: There's going to be plenty of excitement from the fan base,
- 8:08Speaker 9: and I think that's that's rightfully so from my perspective,
- 8:13Speaker 9: now that I've been covering the team for five six
- 8:17Speaker 9: years almost, I've definitely learned a little bit. When uh
- 8:22Speaker 9: Athan was coming up, Athan calliac Manus, there was a
- 8:25Speaker 9: lot of similarities where he was an accomplished high school player.
- 8:30Speaker 9: He was kind of the heir apparent that they were
- 8:33Speaker 9: kind of developing him behind the scenes to be the
- 8:37Speaker 9: guy to take the.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Prora to the next level. And I don't necessarily.
- 8:42Speaker 9: Want to buy all the way in with Drake Lindsey
- 8:45Speaker 9: right away because I feel like I've kind of to
- 8:47Speaker 9: an extent learned my lesson there. But I do think
- 8:53Speaker 9: what makes Drake Lindsey different than Tanner Morgan Athan Max
- 8:59Speaker 9: Frosmer is it's definitely the personality, because I think he
- 9:02Speaker 9: has a gunslinger type of personality. Brosmer was a little
- 9:07Speaker 9: more introverted. It kind of just seemed like it was
- 9:11Speaker 9: just he would just grind tape and he was just
- 9:13Speaker 9: a football, football or nothing guy. And Tara Morgan definitely
- 9:19Speaker 9: was the same way. He seemed very measured, almost a
- 9:23Speaker 9: clone of PJ. Fleck to an extent, Ethan was kind
- 9:26Speaker 9: of somewhere in between there. I think Drake Lindsay's way different.
- 9:31Speaker 9: He spoke to the media for one of the first
- 9:33Speaker 9: times yesterday at their their internal media day, and he just,
- 9:39Speaker 9: you know, kind of just seems like a like a
- 9:42Speaker 9: college recher freshman that just kind of wants to go
- 9:44Speaker 9: out there and sling it. And I'll be interesting interested
- 9:49Speaker 9: to see how that works, because I mean, in high
- 9:53Speaker 9: school he didn't throw that many interceptions, so maybe he
- 9:57Speaker 9: doesn't show that much on the field where play a
- 10:00Speaker 9: gun slinger. But that's been my big takeaway is he
- 10:04Speaker 9: does exude confidence and he's a little different than what
- 10:08Speaker 9: we've seen.
- 10:09Speaker 3: From the past few quarterbacks.
- 10:11Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, you know, that's kind of what I've
- 10:13Speaker 7: been hearing as well. And I can't wait to see him. Obviously,
- 10:17Speaker 7: Gopher fans can't wait to see him. He's gonna be
- 10:18Speaker 7: our guy. But you know, a lot of kudos coming
- 10:23Speaker 7: out of Arkansas, Gatorade Player of the Year out of
- 10:26Speaker 7: the state, so yeah, people are just very excited to
- 10:29Speaker 7: see him.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And yeah, you know, you talk about his personalities.
- 10:31Speaker 7: I was watching some of your film from Twitter, and
- 10:34Speaker 7: actually before we just got started here, I was watching
- 10:37Speaker 7: him talk about, you know, Max being more introverted and
- 10:41Speaker 7: he is more.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Out there and things like that.
- 10:43Speaker 7: So you know, I think that'd be fun to see
- 10:45Speaker 7: if you know, some early successes, you know, him trotting
- 10:49Speaker 7: around the field, guns blazing, all that fun stuff, and
- 10:52Speaker 7: you know, we are off and running there. Let me
- 10:56Speaker 7: ask you about this because there has been a lot
- 11:00Speaker 7: talk to talk about here with the Portal.
- 11:02Speaker 2: And the Gophers.
- 11:04Speaker 7: Now bear with me, folks, because I got the list
- 11:06Speaker 7: written down here so I'm not looking at my camera.
- 11:08Speaker 7: But and obviously we don't have to tell Tony, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 7: Key Loss is here ers obviously our quarterback Big Max
- 11:16Speaker 7: from last year, John Joiner, strig Out, justin Wally, Cody Lindenberg.
- 11:22Speaker 7: I mean, some huge, huge names, and perhaps to most
- 11:28Speaker 7: of these guys because they wound up in the NFL,
- 11:29Speaker 7: whether they were drafted or you know, being uh, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 7: a free agent so to speak. But there is a
- 11:37Speaker 7: lot coming in here in some really big talent. So
- 11:40Speaker 7: let's talk about the portal aspect here because we've had
- 11:43Speaker 7: people coming in. Logan Loya from u c l A.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Is getting a lot of talk. You know, AJ Turner
- 11:49Speaker 7: out of Marshall's getting a lot of talk. So I
- 11:52Speaker 7: defer to the expert talk about the Gopher and actually
- 11:56Speaker 7: the Gopher success in the portal, because I really don't
- 11:59Speaker 7: think that people really give PJ enough credit here maybe
- 12:03Speaker 7: the past two or three years with what he's been
- 12:05Speaker 7: able to do and actually some people he's been able
- 12:07Speaker 7: to kind of keep around.
- 12:09Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I think that's where I'm the
- 12:12Speaker 9: most impressed by PJ, especially over the last few years,
- 12:17Speaker 9: is just a team building perspective, because especially in the
- 12:21Speaker 9: Big Ten at best, they're kind of like in the
- 12:24Speaker 9: middle when it comes to spending and like ambition to
- 12:28Speaker 9: build like this great contender. And I was really impressed
- 12:34Speaker 9: with what they did in the portal this offseason, especially
- 12:37Speaker 9: at the skill positions. Like you mentioned, AJ Turner might
- 12:42Speaker 9: on paper be their most I guess highly touted edition,
- 12:46Speaker 9: being that he's the second fiddle to Darius Taylor. He
- 12:49Speaker 9: might not be the most important, but he led the
- 12:52Speaker 9: country last year in yards per carry at Marshall. Just
- 12:56Speaker 9: a big play waiting to happen, and I think that's
- 12:58Speaker 9: a really underrated storyline heading into the U seeing how
- 13:00Speaker 9: they use him next to Darius Taylor, because Darius Taylor
- 13:04Speaker 9: is going to be the bell cow. He's gonna get
- 13:06Speaker 9: twenty plus touches a game. But aj Turner's too good
- 13:10Speaker 9: of a playmaker to not get the ball in his
- 13:13Speaker 9: hands like five to eight times a game, maybe even
- 13:17Speaker 9: a little more. Maybe they use him in like gadget scenarios,
- 13:21Speaker 9: but they have a lot of playmakers because you mentioned
- 13:25Speaker 9: Logan Loya from UCLA. He's gonna be that slot guy
- 13:30Speaker 9: who I think is an ideal number two receiver on
- 13:34Speaker 9: an offense. He's gonna be able to move the chains.
- 13:36Speaker 9: He's not gonna be a guy who probably has many,
- 13:41Speaker 9: you know, one hundred yard games, ten catch games. But
- 13:44Speaker 9: Javon Tracy from Miami, Ohio is the other guy I
- 13:47Speaker 9: want to mention who I think is probably their most
- 13:51Speaker 9: important portal edition because if he can, he has the
- 13:57Speaker 9: potential to be the number one receiver. And they have
- 14:00Speaker 9: a huge gap now there with Daniel Jackson gone. I mean,
- 14:04Speaker 9: if you go back to twenty nineteen, it was Tyler Johnson,
- 14:07Speaker 9: then it was Rashad Bateman, then it was Chris hopmanbel
- 14:10Speaker 9: then it was Daniel Jackson, and now they don't really
- 14:13Speaker 9: have that true number one receiver. But uh, Javon Tracy's
- 14:17Speaker 9: the guy that they're gonna kind of need to assume
- 14:19Speaker 9: that role. He is the younger brother of Tyrone Tracy
- 14:23Speaker 9: who's in the NFL. Fun fact, but they're gonna need
- 14:28Speaker 9: him to step up. I definitely think he can. Sounds
- 14:31Speaker 9: like he's.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Has a really close relationship with Drake Lindsey.
- 14:34Speaker 9: But those are the three additions on the offensive end
- 14:39Speaker 9: that I think fans are gonna learn about pretty quickly
- 14:42Speaker 9: this year.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Okay, and again, folks, Tony Lieber joining us, let me
- 14:47Speaker 7: ask you this before we get to the offensive line,
- 14:50Speaker 7: because obviously huge turnover there. But one thing, you know,
- 14:54Speaker 7: the tight end position here. You know, we have such
- 14:57Speaker 7: a deep history of some very very very solid tight ends,
- 15:02Speaker 7: obviously NFL quality tight ends here. What do you think
- 15:06Speaker 7: because I'm looking at our depth chart here, Jamison Gears,
- 15:10Speaker 7: Frank Berman, we got Drew Bieber out of Purdue that
- 15:14Speaker 7: transferred in. Does PJ maybe look to maybe reestablish throwing
- 15:22Speaker 7: that ball to a very worthy tight end because I
- 15:25Speaker 7: think that's just one of the things we've missed here.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Recently.
- 15:28Speaker 7: No disrespect to brevns van Ford by any means, because
- 15:32Speaker 7: I just thought something to play calling really just didn't
- 15:35Speaker 7: take advantage.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Of him and his size. But you know, I mean,
- 15:39Speaker 2: we've had.
- 15:40Speaker 7: A lot of great tight ends here, so I just
- 15:42Speaker 7: like to see them get back to using the tight ends,
- 15:45Speaker 7: you know, as there is a real threat to this offense.
- 15:48Speaker 9: Yeah, Jameson Gears is a guy who I definitely think
- 15:53Speaker 9: I don't know if you can get up to five
- 15:54Speaker 9: hundred receiving yards, but he's one of the better tight
- 15:57Speaker 9: ends in the Big ten.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I think he can get around there.
- 16:01Speaker 9: Like honestly, I uh, they were a couple of games
- 16:04Speaker 9: last year where where he was a serious playmaker. Uh
- 16:08Speaker 9: Brosma really liked throwing the tight end. And that's gonna
- 16:11Speaker 9: be something we figure out early because is Drake Lindsay
- 16:16Speaker 9: just gonna want to be a gunslinger and take all
- 16:18Speaker 9: these deep shots which typically don't go to tight ends,
- 16:22Speaker 9: or is he going to kind of continue that that
- 16:25Speaker 9: dink and dunk type offense. Is it gonna be a
- 16:27Speaker 9: little conservative that those are the answers I don't have,
- 16:30Speaker 9: And we're gonna figure out when uh, when the ball
- 16:34Speaker 9: is spotted and they start playing.
- 16:35Speaker 3: But I think.
- 16:37Speaker 9: Jameson Gears is one of the more I guess overlooked
- 16:40Speaker 9: players on the offense. I think he totally has a
- 16:46Speaker 9: sneaky NFL potential. I don't know if he's gonna be
- 16:48Speaker 9: like a draft pick, but we saw ko Keief get
- 16:51Speaker 9: drafted Brevians. Van Ford is stuff around in the NFL
- 16:55Speaker 9: now with the Cowboys. I think he's a weapon on
- 17:00Speaker 9: offense that not many Gophers fans are going to point
- 17:03Speaker 9: out when they're looking at the roster. But I like
- 17:06Speaker 9: his game a lot.
- 17:09Speaker 7: Nice nice, So yeah, because I agree, man, I'd being
- 17:11Speaker 7: real nice to get the tight ends going back here.
- 17:13Speaker 7: So let's just keep it moving again, folks. We get
- 17:17Speaker 7: at Tony.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Lieber joining us here on the Sports Done Right podcast.
- 17:21Speaker 2: The offensive line. The offensive line some.
- 17:24Speaker 7: Say, maybe disappointed a little bit last year with all
- 17:28Speaker 7: the talent that was on that line, but lots of
- 17:32Speaker 7: new names. Man to Fi out of Washington, Dylan Ray
- 17:36Speaker 7: transfer out Ofentucky Marcellus Marshall University is a Central Florida transfer.
- 17:44Speaker 7: You know, there's just obviously this is wholesale changes at
- 17:48Speaker 7: you know, across the offensive line here, What are your
- 17:51Speaker 7: early thoughts Tony from what you've seen him, from what
- 17:54Speaker 7: you've heard, and obviously I mean, we're really just gonna
- 17:57Speaker 7: have to wait and see how it starts yelling with
- 17:59Speaker 7: the games or play but just from maybe a practice standpoint,
- 18:02Speaker 7: how they been looking.
- 18:03Speaker 9: Yeah, I think kind of going along with the theme
- 18:06Speaker 9: of the whole team, I think especially on the offensive line, quarterback,
- 18:10Speaker 9: and then we'll get into Koy Parritch and everything. But
- 18:13Speaker 9: I think there's really like a two year window almost
- 18:16Speaker 9: here with a lot of the players where like if
- 18:19Speaker 9: they reach their potential, like Minnesota could really exceed expectations
- 18:25Speaker 9: and you know, there's a bigger playoff now, maybe they
- 18:28Speaker 9: sneak in. Like that's a big statement there, But the
- 18:32Speaker 9: offensive line kind of fits that mold. Because one player
- 18:37Speaker 9: that I want to mention that Gophers should know pretty
- 18:41Speaker 9: quickly is Nathan Roy. He was the number one recruit
- 18:45Speaker 9: in Wisconsin two years ago with Parris and Drake Lindsay
- 18:48Speaker 9: in that class.
- 18:50Speaker 3: He didn't play much throughout the year, but he played
- 18:52Speaker 3: in the bowl game.
- 18:53Speaker 9: He was a four star recruit, a really big high
- 18:57Speaker 9: school recruit that has the potential to start up left hack.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I don't know if he does Week one, but he's
- 19:02Speaker 3: going to play this year.
- 19:04Speaker 9: Uh pj Eds has shown, I guess the willingness to
- 19:08Speaker 9: kind of rotate a few guys early in the year.
- 19:11Speaker 9: But he's that that that name up front that has
- 19:16Speaker 9: uh arianta airsree potential where he could be a top
- 19:19Speaker 9: one hundred draft pick that if he hits, so to speak,
- 19:24Speaker 9: this offensive line could exceed a lot of expectations. But
- 19:28Speaker 9: there's not many red shirt freshmen that do that really
- 19:31Speaker 9: in all.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Of college football.
- 19:33Speaker 9: But he's he has the potential to So that'll be
- 19:35Speaker 9: an interesting storyline to watch. And then you mentioned a
- 19:38Speaker 9: bunch of transfers. They they have four of them that
- 19:42Speaker 9: could play a big role this year to five as
- 19:44Speaker 9: a guy who was kind of banged up all spring.
- 19:47Speaker 9: That he's another young guy. I believe he has two
- 19:51Speaker 9: years of elibella left, maybe three, but he's a guy
- 19:56Speaker 9: that that could, you know, help them reach a new
- 19:59Speaker 9: level up. I don't know how much he'll play this year.
- 20:02Speaker 9: I kind of have a wait and see approach with him.
- 20:05Speaker 9: But you have Greg Johnson from Prior Lake returning. He's
- 20:09Speaker 9: been a two year starter. Ashton Beers was a starter
- 20:11Speaker 9: last year at He'll probably start at center, and then
- 20:15Speaker 9: the right guard spot you have probably you know Dylan
- 20:21Speaker 9: Ray from Kentucky like you mentioned Marcello's Marshall from ucf U.
- 20:26Speaker 9: And then right tackle. There's another transfer, Jaden Ball from Purdue,
- 20:30Speaker 9: who's a guy they got in the spring. Came down
- 20:33Speaker 9: to Ohio State and Minnesota. So if you're out recruiting
- 20:36Speaker 9: Minnesota for Ohio State for a guy, you know what,
- 20:41Speaker 9: he's pretty good. So there's a lot of question marks
- 20:45Speaker 9: up front, but a lot like the wide receiver position
- 20:49Speaker 9: and kind of what I mentioned. There's plenty of talent
- 20:53Speaker 9: and they did a really good job accumulating talent. They've
- 20:57Speaker 9: had Brian Callahan as the old line coach for as
- 20:59Speaker 9: long as fle's been there, and he's done a great
- 21:02Speaker 9: job developing talent. So it might be they might start
- 21:06Speaker 9: a little slow this year as they, I guess, learn
- 21:09Speaker 9: how to play together. But there's plenty of talent upfront,
- 21:13Speaker 9: and there's a lot of variations where ow could go.
- 21:16Speaker 9: But it'll be an interesting storyline to follow, that's for sure.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Here you go.
- 21:23Speaker 7: Over on the defensive side of the ball, Tony, let
- 21:26Speaker 7: me ask you this instead of kind of maybe the
- 21:28Speaker 7: way we've been breaking it down. What are you looking
- 21:32Speaker 7: for from the Gopher defense this season?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Again?
- 21:36Speaker 7: You know, plenty of transfers, you know, I'm very interested
- 21:40Speaker 7: in John Nester. Hopefully he can bring some of those
- 21:42Speaker 7: Howkeye secrets and we can bring that pig back home
- 21:45Speaker 7: there and he and I see he's gonna probably be
- 21:47Speaker 7: used more on a nickel package than anything else. But
- 21:50Speaker 7: just on the defensive side of the ball. Again, we
- 21:52Speaker 7: lost some big names. But what are you looking for
- 21:56Speaker 7: for the Gopher defense this year? Or maybe just early
- 21:59Speaker 7: on in the season.
- 22:01Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it's it's definitely interesting because Corey Heatherman
- 22:06Speaker 9: last year's DC, He's now at Miami. They promoted within
- 22:10Speaker 9: Danny Collins, longtime assistant, finally getting his shot to call plays,
- 22:15Speaker 9: which is a massive storyline. But as it pertains to
- 22:20Speaker 9: I guess personnel. My biggest question on the whole roster
- 22:23Speaker 9: is their cornerback position, Zekwon Bryan Returns. He was their
- 22:28Speaker 9: third cornerback last year behind Justin Wally and Ethan Robinson,
- 22:33Speaker 9: and I think he certainly has the potential to be
- 22:36Speaker 9: a number one corner in the Big ten. And he's
- 22:38Speaker 9: not a huge question mark so to speak. He's shown
- 22:41Speaker 9: that he can produce at this level, but outside of that,
- 22:45Speaker 9: it's a lot of question marks. You mentioned John Nester,
- 22:48Speaker 9: he comes from Iowa. On paper, that sounds good, but
- 22:51Speaker 9: he hasn't played a whole lot. And they brought in
- 22:55Speaker 9: Jalen Bowden transfer from NC Central FCS school. They've had
- 23:00Speaker 9: a lot of success with that route the past two years.
- 23:03Speaker 9: They had Trayvon Jones two years ago from Elon Ethan
- 23:07Speaker 9: Robinson last year from Bucknell, and now Bowden from n
- 23:12Speaker 9: C Central.
- 23:13Speaker 3: But he's uh, pretty small, and I believe he has
- 23:17Speaker 3: two years left as well, but it's hard to jump
- 23:21Speaker 3: from the me act to the Big ten, but you
- 23:23Speaker 3: never know. And then uh, Jona Ty McMillan, who's another
- 23:28Speaker 3: guy who might slot into that that nickel role. He
- 23:30Speaker 3: played a little bit last year former TCU transfer. And
- 23:34Speaker 3: then I know they like a lot of a couple
- 23:36Speaker 3: of young guys too, But it's just a lot of
- 23:39Speaker 3: question marks after Zaekwon Bryan, and there's a lot of
- 23:43Speaker 3: teams that are really good at throwing the ball in
- 23:45Speaker 3: the Big Ten. Notably, the first one I think.
- 23:48Speaker 9: They'll play is Ohio State, and it just on paper
- 23:53Speaker 9: when I see that game and Ohio State's gonna roll
- 23:55Speaker 9: out Jeremiah Smith, who's one of the revers I've ever
- 23:59Speaker 9: seen play right. He might get two hundred and fifty
- 24:02Speaker 9: yards in that game. But so but and then it's
- 24:07Speaker 9: interesting because they might have the two best safeties in
- 24:10Speaker 9: the conference behind him with outside of Caleb Downs at
- 24:14Speaker 9: Ohio State, but Coy Perrich and Kerry Browner.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Future pros.
- 24:18Speaker 9: So that secondary is gonna be really interesting because I
- 24:23Speaker 9: think up front they got the talent they got Anthony
- 24:25Speaker 9: Smith future NFL player. I'm higher on the d line
- 24:29Speaker 9: than most. And then that at linebacker, Maverick Baranowski.
- 24:32Speaker 3: He's right in that.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Cody Linnenberg, Yeah, I think he's I think he is
- 24:38Speaker 7: very close to being a borderline All Conference linebacker.
- 24:42Speaker 9: Yeah, he kind of he fits the mold of what
- 24:45Speaker 9: the Gophers have had with PJ.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Flecky.
- 24:47Speaker 9: He does a lot of the same things that Lennenberg
- 24:49Speaker 9: and Sorry marn did And so when I look at it,
- 24:53Speaker 9: it's just the cornerback position. I don't I'm not very
- 24:57Speaker 9: skeptical of Danny Collins calling play is it's he's been
- 25:02Speaker 9: with PJ. Fleck forever. He's built for this moment. Fleck
- 25:06Speaker 9: knows what's what to expect. Collins knows what to expect.
- 25:10Speaker 9: I think they're gonna have a really good defense again.
- 25:12Speaker 9: But the only thing that scares me is that cornerback verge.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, I totally agree with that. All right.
- 25:19Speaker 7: So a couple of things here as we head towards
- 25:22Speaker 7: the end of our time with Tony. One thing I
- 25:25Speaker 7: wanted to talk about nil, you know, always you know, present,
- 25:31Speaker 7: especially for teams like Minnesota. Do we have any updates?
- 25:35Speaker 7: Do we have any numbers of what they're dealing with?
- 25:38Speaker 7: I think for you know, obviously whatever the budget is
- 25:41Speaker 7: over there, they've been doing very well. You know, we
- 25:43Speaker 7: talked about a little bit ago here with the porol
- 25:45Speaker 7: and everything. But do you have any I guess kind
- 25:49Speaker 7: of concrete numbers or anything that they're dealing with Tony, Yeah, I.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Unfortunately don't have any numbers.
- 25:56Speaker 9: But the biggest thing, obviously was about a month ago
- 26:00Speaker 9: the House VERSU NCAA settlement was finally approved, which changes
- 26:05Speaker 9: a lot what I am hearing because now the schools
- 26:11Speaker 9: are technically allowed to directly pay the players, and each
- 26:16Speaker 9: university has a has a cap now which is around
- 26:20Speaker 9: twenty million.
- 26:21Speaker 3: I know, that they can dive you up to all
- 26:22Speaker 3: their programs.
- 26:23Speaker 9: But the thing that's really fascinating that I keep hearing
- 26:28Speaker 9: that is kind of baffling is there's now this third
- 26:34Speaker 9: party system that has to approve the NIL deals.
- 26:40Speaker 3: So if a school wants.
- 26:43Speaker 9: To pay a player an NIL deal out of that
- 26:48Speaker 9: revenue sharing thing, the third party company has to figure
- 26:53Speaker 9: out if it's a legitimate business practice blah blah blah.
- 26:57Speaker 9: And it sounds like school are struggling to get those approved.
- 27:02Speaker 9: So I don't know if it's like just since it's
- 27:04Speaker 9: a new thing, they're working out some kinks, but it
- 27:08Speaker 9: seems like there's a lot that still needs to be
- 27:11Speaker 9: figured out there in the grand scheme of things. My
- 27:16Speaker 9: optimistic view and my personality, I like to think that
- 27:21Speaker 9: five ten years from now, we're gonna be like this
- 27:23Speaker 9: ten year window of college sports was absolute madness, but
- 27:28Speaker 9: we came out the other ended.
- 27:30Speaker 3: And I like to think that.
- 27:32Speaker 9: I like to think this revenue sharing things one step
- 27:34Speaker 9: towards that. But as it pertains to the Gophers, I mean,
- 27:38Speaker 9: the football team is really competitive with from a financial
- 27:43Speaker 9: perspective because they retained Darius Taylor, who's arguably a top
- 27:48Speaker 9: ten running back in the sport. They retained Coy parrotsho
- 27:52Speaker 9: could generate a number of open market and they're recruiting
- 27:57Speaker 9: really well at the high school level. They got a
- 27:59Speaker 9: couple of big name in the transfer portal. From a
- 28:02Speaker 9: football perspective, I don't think you can really ask for
- 28:05Speaker 9: much more because they all, yeah, they're acquiring talent like
- 28:10Speaker 9: a program even better than them should.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I totally agree. Okay, So PJ.
- 28:18Speaker 7: Fleck has been extended yet again, kind of becoming an
- 28:22Speaker 7: all half for him, So props to the agent there.
- 28:25Speaker 7: But you know, Pj's been here what almost ten years,
- 28:29Speaker 7: almost that magical decade mark. And when you kind of
- 28:32Speaker 7: sit back, take it all in from where he came from,
- 28:38Speaker 7: what he's done, the state of the program so to speak.
- 28:42Speaker 7: What does Tony Liebert say on the span of coach PJ.
- 28:46Speaker 7: Fleck at the University of Minnesota. How do you look
- 28:49Speaker 7: at this and how would you characterize it so far?
- 28:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's a fascinating discussion.
- 28:56Speaker 9: It's one that I have often with my grandpa, who
- 28:59Speaker 9: just turned seventy nine, and he has a very different
- 29:02Speaker 9: perspective than I do.
- 29:06Speaker 3: He's seen a little different levels of Gophers football.
- 29:09Speaker 9: But as a twenty four year old, I guess what
- 29:13Speaker 9: I'm most impressed by from PJ Fleck was last season.
- 29:19Speaker 9: I had really low expectations going into the year. There
- 29:22Speaker 9: was a lot that I saw in that twenty twenty
- 29:25Speaker 9: three season that I guess concerned me.
- 29:30Speaker 3: From a coordinator perspective.
- 29:33Speaker 9: I thought the play calling in twenty twenty three was
- 29:35Speaker 9: atrocious offensively, especially, and there were a lot of questions defensively.
- 29:42Speaker 9: And then in that offseason, Joe Rossi, their longtime defensive coordinator,
- 29:46Speaker 9: he leaves for Michigan State and PJ. Fleck decides to
- 29:51Speaker 9: retain Greg Harbo Junior the offensive coordinator after a borderline
- 29:56Speaker 9: abysmal year offensively right and it paid off for him.
- 30:01Speaker 9: Greg Harbot Junior improved a ton. PJ trusted him and
- 30:06Speaker 9: it worked out for them offensively. They went out to
- 30:09Speaker 9: get a transfer portal quarterback, which I didn't think they
- 30:12Speaker 9: were going to do because PJ is a guy who
- 30:16Speaker 9: likes people who are bought into his program and doing things,
- 30:20Speaker 9: And what I saw last year was a willingness to change,
- 30:24Speaker 9: which is why I think he should be the golfers
- 30:28Speaker 9: coach as long as he wants to be because that
- 30:33Speaker 9: is something I wasn't entirely confident that he would show.
- 30:38Speaker 9: And the fact that he showed that last year in
- 30:41Speaker 9: the hiring perspective, from hiring Corey Heatherman from a different program,
- 30:47Speaker 9: which is also something that he hasn't done often. He
- 30:50Speaker 9: did a couple of things that I didn't think he
- 30:52Speaker 9: was gonna do, and it paid off for him. They
- 30:54Speaker 9: had a productive year last year. They keep beating Wisconsin.
- 30:57Speaker 9: He got the Iowa monkey off his back. It just me,
- 31:01Speaker 9: as someone who's lived my whole life in Minnesota, if
- 31:05Speaker 9: you beat your rivals and you get around eight wins
- 31:08Speaker 9: and maybe every five or six years, there's a twenty
- 31:11Speaker 9: nineteen tight season for Minnesota's Gophers football. I just I
- 31:16Speaker 9: don't know why how you can really expect much more,
- 31:18Speaker 9: especially in this new sixteen team Big Ten.
- 31:23Speaker 3: It like they're not not going to play in the
- 31:25Speaker 3: Big Ten championship. That's not gonna happen. There's just too
- 31:27Speaker 3: many good teams in the conference.
- 31:30Speaker 7: Right But ironically can still find the way and you know,
- 31:34Speaker 7: God bless those Indiana Hoosiers of last year. Man, but
- 31:38Speaker 7: that I'm telling you, that's the that's the way though,
- 31:40Speaker 7: I mean Indiana, what they did last year shows you
- 31:44Speaker 7: that a team like Minnesota, if you're a Purdue fan,
- 31:48Speaker 7: you know whatever, that type of quality team is that
- 31:51Speaker 7: compares to a Minnesota that with a twenty nineteen type
- 31:55Speaker 7: of break in the season, Like, yeah, we would have
- 31:57Speaker 7: been either in the playoffs right on the cusp of
- 32:01Speaker 7: the college playoffs, had you know, the present system.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Been in place. So you just never know.
- 32:07Speaker 7: And you know, let's ended with this because I'm pulling
- 32:10Speaker 7: up our Gopher football schedule here, Tony. You know, I
- 32:16Speaker 7: just recently learned Northwestern State was from Louisiana.
- 32:21Speaker 2: California is in all kinds of.
- 32:25Speaker 7: Exactly California for folks that don't know, I mean, they
- 32:30Speaker 7: lost their whole running back room. They've had all kinds
- 32:32Speaker 7: of people kind of bail on the team out there.
- 32:35Speaker 7: The Gophers open with Buffalo and then you know, obviously
- 32:39Speaker 7: kind of the usual games Iowa, Ohio State, Big Ones,
- 32:43Speaker 7: and of course the Oregon game there in November fourteenth.
- 32:47Speaker 2: But let's just kind of talk records, Tony. I mean
- 32:50Speaker 2: we were kind of chatting before the show.
- 32:52Speaker 7: I was saying, you know, kind of maybe seven wins
- 32:55Speaker 7: might be the bottom, like you know that might be
- 32:58Speaker 7: disappointing on up to a possible nine ten wins season
- 33:01Speaker 7: with a break here and there.
- 33:04Speaker 2: What are your thoughts early on?
- 33:06Speaker 7: Obviously not a game has been played, but what do
- 33:09Speaker 7: you think and if kind of everything should play out,
- 33:12Speaker 7: no major injuries, things like that.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so I went game by game and not not
- 33:18Speaker 3: to do that right now.
- 33:19Speaker 9: I could talk to you for another half an hour,
- 33:21Speaker 9: but I feel free.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I means you want to pop up talk about for free.
- 33:28Speaker 9: Yeah, there's a few games that I'm circling. They have
- 33:33Speaker 9: an insane, I guess road schedule this year. They go
- 33:36Speaker 9: cross country to cal they play Iowa on the road,
- 33:39Speaker 9: they play Ohio State on the road, they play Oregon
- 33:42Speaker 9: on the road, and they play Northwestern at Wrigley Field.
- 33:45Speaker 9: And on the surface, when you have a redshirt freshman
- 33:48Speaker 9: quarterback who's never started a game at the college level,
- 33:51Speaker 9: having those type of road environments is.
- 33:53Speaker 3: A little intimidating.
- 33:55Speaker 9: And if there's one thing that a national person, if
- 33:59Speaker 9: they say out not high on the Gophers, that's one
- 34:01Speaker 9: reason I could be like, I kind of understand it.
- 34:05Speaker 9: But I do think Drake Lindsay's going to be a
- 34:07Speaker 9: guy who can show up in those moments, and I
- 34:11Speaker 9: think the schedule works out well for him because on paper,
- 34:13Speaker 9: probably the easiest of those road games might be Cal
- 34:17Speaker 9: and that's the first one. So let's say they take
- 34:20Speaker 9: care of business against Buffalo and Northwestern State at home.
- 34:23Speaker 9: Tough ast to go cross country to Cal, but on paper,
- 34:29Speaker 9: their roster was absolutely decimated in the portals. So yeah,
- 34:33Speaker 9: let's say they win that, and then you get a
- 34:35Speaker 9: buy Rutgers comes to town. And this is one of
- 34:39Speaker 9: two games that I'm circling that will tell you a
- 34:43Speaker 9: lot about this Gophers team. And I think that Rutgers
- 34:46Speaker 9: game will a lot because it's the definition of a
- 34:51Speaker 9: trap game because the following week they go to Ohio State.
- 34:55Speaker 9: But you have your former quarterback coming in, all the
- 34:57Speaker 9: connections with the Rutgers and PJ and now eight in
- 35:01Speaker 9: the beach of last year too, right, So yeah, that's
- 35:04Speaker 9: a sneaky game that not many people are circling.
- 35:07Speaker 3: That Rutgers is going to be a tough out.
- 35:09Speaker 9: They might be a six and sixteen, but they lost
- 35:11Speaker 9: to him last year. I don't think they loose from
- 35:14Speaker 9: two years in a row. I don't think PJ will
- 35:16Speaker 9: make let that happen. But it Let's say they sneak
- 35:19Speaker 9: by and then they're four now going into Ohio State.
- 35:22Speaker 9: We mentioned Jeremiah Smith at that game. I just don't
- 35:26Speaker 9: really see how they're even competitive in that game, to
- 35:28Speaker 9: be completely honest. But so maybe they get they get
- 35:31Speaker 9: a piece of humble pie there, and then they come back,
- 35:33Speaker 9: they get Purdue at home, which if there's a big
- 35:36Speaker 9: ten opponent to come off Ohio State with, right, that's
- 35:39Speaker 9: a good one. Regain your confidence a little bit. And
- 35:43Speaker 9: then I have a schedule behind me. And then they
- 35:46Speaker 9: go two to the Nebraska which is a Friday night game,
- 35:50Speaker 9: and that might be the biggest home game of the
- 35:55Speaker 9: year other than Wisconsin, but Friday night under the lights,
- 35:58Speaker 9: Nebraska's sneaky rivalry.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Now there'll be a lot of DRAFTA fans there.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And and that's the thing.
- 36:05Speaker 7: We've gotten the victories, but man, they've they've been you know,
- 36:10Speaker 7: hairline victories.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Man.
- 36:12Speaker 7: So you know that I never ever overlook Nebraska. I
- 36:17Speaker 7: know a lot of Gopher fans like talking craft to
- 36:19Speaker 7: the Husker fans that have come up here for that
- 36:21Speaker 7: game and stuff, but kind of hold off on that
- 36:25Speaker 7: because you know, we've been very lucky to pass a
- 36:27Speaker 7: couple of games here against Nebraska.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so that that's obviously another big one.
- 36:32Speaker 9: I think they're gonna get up for that game and
- 36:34Speaker 9: it's gonna be a great atmosphere. And I think that's
- 36:37Speaker 9: when we see maybe Huntington Banks say, do you maybe
- 36:39Speaker 9: you know underrated place to play?
- 36:41Speaker 3: Maybe Nebraska struggles.
- 36:44Speaker 9: And then to Iowa, I was a team that I'm unfortunately,
- 36:48Speaker 9: I think they're gonna be pretty good this year. So
- 36:49Speaker 9: that's gonna be a really tough game. But yeah, and
- 36:52Speaker 9: then after Iowa, you have a Michigan State game sandwich
- 36:56Speaker 9: in between Iowa and Oregon, which, much like that Rutgers game,
- 37:01Speaker 9: just screams trap game that it seems like PJ has
- 37:06Speaker 9: kind of had one of these games every year where
- 37:07Speaker 9: no one circles and you're like, wait, how do they
- 37:10Speaker 9: just lose to them? And I have a feeling that
- 37:13Speaker 9: might be Michigan State this year. They're it might be
- 37:17Speaker 9: you know, six and six, seven and five team, they're
- 37:19Speaker 9: not anything special, but Joe Rossi defensive coordinator there. Still
- 37:24Speaker 9: they're gonna be well coached, and you have a they
- 37:27Speaker 9: have a bye week after that before they go to
- 37:29Speaker 9: Oregon but I think they could overlook Michigan State there
- 37:33Speaker 9: and then that Oregon game.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Another game. I if they.
- 37:38Speaker 9: Could beat Oregon, Ohio or Ohio State, I'm much more
- 37:41Speaker 9: confident they'd be competitive against Oregon. Being at the games
- 37:45Speaker 9: on a Friday, they're coming off a bye, it's late
- 37:49Speaker 9: in the year. So there's that game, and then you
- 37:53Speaker 9: got uh Northwestern at Wrigley in Wisconsin at home. So
- 37:59Speaker 9: really overall, I guess that was a really long win
- 38:01Speaker 9: to answer, all right, I think my predictions eight and four.
- 38:08Speaker 9: I think they're gonna drop one of those Rutgers or
- 38:10Speaker 9: Michigan State games. It's really hard to predict an Ohio
- 38:13Speaker 9: State or Oregon win. So there's two losses there. I
- 38:17Speaker 9: think that Iowa game is gonna be really tough. So
- 38:20Speaker 9: there's three losses and four with the Michigan State one.
- 38:24Speaker 7: Okay, hey, Tony real quick here because we speak on
- 38:28Speaker 7: I well, kind of the thorn in the side.
- 38:30Speaker 2: You know, I've talked about it so many times.
- 38:33Speaker 7: You know, Gophers losing to out Now last year they
- 38:38Speaker 7: came out in the second half and just you know,
- 38:41Speaker 7: just kicked us in the nuts. So I mean you
- 38:42Speaker 7: got to give props where you know, props was earned
- 38:46Speaker 7: and running back. You know they came to play in
- 38:49Speaker 7: that second half. But you know we've lost to the
- 38:52Speaker 7: some very mediocre Iowa teams that have honestly cost the
- 38:57Speaker 7: Gophers probably two Rose Bowl appearances because you know, it
- 39:00Speaker 7: was one of those seasons where it's like, hey, you
- 39:01Speaker 7: win this.
- 39:02Speaker 3: Game, you go to the Rose Ball. Yeah.
- 39:06Speaker 7: What is it that you're hearing about this year's io
- 39:10Speaker 7: Would's team? Because I actually have a friend of mine
- 39:13Speaker 7: a big Iowa fan. He's actually coming in on some
- 39:16Speaker 7: Gofer season tickets with me because he lives here, but
- 39:19Speaker 7: he loves college football.
- 39:20Speaker 2: But what is it about this year's Iowa team that
- 39:25Speaker 2: you're hearing that.
- 39:27Speaker 7: You think that you know they're just going to kind
- 39:29Speaker 7: of continue on down there in Iowa City.
- 39:33Speaker 3: I think it's quarterback play.
- 39:34Speaker 9: I think they brought in Mark Ronowski from South Dakota State,
- 39:38Speaker 9: who I'm really high on, and I think he fits
- 39:41Speaker 9: their system so well. Like if you had to make
- 39:45Speaker 9: an Iowa quarterback in a lab, I think it's him
- 39:47Speaker 9: and he could. I mean, the last few years their
- 39:51Speaker 9: quarterback play has been so bad with Kate back as
- 39:54Speaker 9: Spencer Petrius, I think he's probably their best quarterback at
- 39:59Speaker 9: least since Nate Stanley, maybe CJ. Bethard. And I think
- 40:04Speaker 9: they're gonna have a sneaky of good offense this year.
- 40:06Speaker 9: Brian or yeah, Brian Farrens is no longer call him
- 40:09Speaker 9: plays Tim Lester a year two.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, They're.
- 40:13Speaker 9: Not gonna be an air raid by any means, but
- 40:16Speaker 9: they could have their best offense in quite a while.
- 40:19Speaker 9: And you always know they're gonna have a good defense,
- 40:21Speaker 9: good running game. So if you add a sneaky good
- 40:25Speaker 9: offense to that, they're my sleeper team that could be
- 40:30Speaker 9: that fourth Big Ten team in the playoff. Unfortunately, I
- 40:33Speaker 9: don't want us to happen.
- 40:34Speaker 7: No, of course not, but you know, yeah, just you know,
- 40:37Speaker 7: being honest about it again, honestly, That's why I asked
- 40:40Speaker 7: the question because also former Gopher Ed Hawthorne, former offensive
- 40:46Speaker 7: lineman friend.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Who was in school when I was there, his son, you.
- 40:50Speaker 7: Talk about the South Dakota His son was offensive lineman
- 40:53Speaker 7: out there South Dakota when they won the championship.
- 40:56Speaker 2: He also entered the portal and is now down in Iowa.
- 41:00Speaker 7: Well, yeah, exactly, So I mean, you know, you talk
- 41:03Speaker 7: about championship portal picking another reason I wanted to ask
- 41:08Speaker 7: you about those pesky unfortunate Iowa Hawk eyes there. But
- 41:12Speaker 7: shout out to the cyclone Syhawk champs, by the way, so.
- 41:16Speaker 2: We'll give them some love.
- 41:18Speaker 7: But Tony, first off, man, here, I'm gonna get you
- 41:21Speaker 7: out here. We've been here for forty minutes almost. I
- 41:23Speaker 7: want to thank you so much again for taking some

- 41:32Speaker 7: being a fan. I won't be up in the in
- 41:34Speaker 7: the booth there with you, so I'll definitely be picking
- 41:36Speaker 7: your brain from the journalistic standpoint, and just tell the
- 41:40Speaker 7: folks real quick before you get out of here, man,
- 41:42Speaker 7: where they can find you and where they can follow
- 41:44Speaker 7: you at.
