- 0:03You know, Derek, I, I really appreciate you getting everybody
- 0:06awake before we get to class. You know, days like this, it is
- 0:13just, it's hard to get motivated on certain things.
- 0:19And, you know, you just, you wake up in the morning and you
- 0:22feel like you're ready to go back to sleep already.
- 0:25But we appreciate you being here.
- 0:29I know that we've got some in here this morning due to the
- 0:32situation with the Gallagher's that are not normally in class
- 0:36in here. So I'll try not to leave you all
- 0:39too far behind with things. But I hope that you'll open your
- 0:42Bibles with me this morning to Hebrews Chapter 9.
- 0:46We are continuing our study through the book of Hebrews
- 0:49today. Our, our goal is going to be to
- 0:51cover Chapter 9. We've concluded last week with
- 0:55the end of Chapter 7 and Chapter 8.
- 1:00And I'm going to bump back just a little bit in Chapter 8 to set
- 1:03the foundation for what we're going to talk about today.
- 1:06Because from the beginning of Chapter 3 through the 1st
- 1:10sections of Chapter 8, the the general topic of discussion has
- 1:16been Jesus as the high priest. He's going to spend a great deal
- 1:20of time looking at what Jesus is as our high priest, why he is
- 1:26our high priest, who made him our high priest.
- 1:29And remember, we're, as we've stated 100 times so far.
- 1:32We'll say it 100 more times before we're done.
- 1:34We're writing the Jewish Christians.
- 1:36We're writing to those that believe in Jesus.
- 1:38We're writing to those that that are already convinced that he is
- 1:45the Messiah, but now they're struggling with whether or not
- 1:49he's enough, whether or not we need to stick with Jesus, or
- 1:53whether we should go back to the things that our forefathers
- 1:58believed in and our forefathers practiced with the Old
- 2:01Testament. And so as you come to the
- 2:04second-half of chapter 8, we get a bit of a transition.
- 2:09And from the second-half of chapter 8 through chapter 12,
- 2:14you're really going to have this persistent discussion that takes
- 2:19place about the differences between the old law and the new
- 2:24law and what it is that Jesus brings us with the new law.
- 2:29That's specifically going to be chapters 9 and 10.
- 2:32And then why that means we can't run away from Christ, we can't
- 2:37quit, we can't give up. And that's going to be the end
- 2:40of chapter 10 and then chapters 11 and 12.
- 2:44And so as we come into Chapter 9 today, the the transition point
- 2:48is really found in chapter 8, verse 7.
- 2:51And, and I want to back up to there just to kind of get the
- 2:54context of where we're where we're discussing today.
- 2:57In verse 7, he says, for if that first covenant, first covenant
- 3:01is law, Moses, all right, the Old Testament law, If that first
- 3:08covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been
- 3:11sought for a second because finding fault with them, he
- 3:15says. And then he quotes Jeremiah
- 3:17chapter 31, verses 31 through 34.
- 3:21And then in verse 13, he says in that he says a new covenant, he
- 3:26has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete
- 3:31and growing old is ready to vanish away.
- 3:38The writer of the book of Hebrews says here at the end of
- 3:41chapter 8 that the old covenant is obsolete.
- 3:45And this is kind of where we closed our class last week.
- 3:47What does it mean for something to be obsolete?
- 3:52OK, it doesn't fulfill its purpose any longer.
- 3:56There's there's something better that has taken its place.
- 4:02Well, what was the purpose of the Old Testament?
- 4:05What was the purpose of the Law of Moses?
- 4:11OK, it set apart the children of Israel from the rest of the
- 4:14world. For what purpose?
- 4:17All right. Preparing the way for Christ.
- 4:20It was. How did Paul put it in
- 4:22Galatians? It was our schoolmaster to bring
- 4:25us to Christ. The purpose of the Old Testament
- 4:29was to pave the way for the Messiah to come into the world.
- 4:36Had it done what it was supposed to do?
- 4:38Yes, it fulfilled it in every respect.
- 4:41As a matter of fact, Jesus says there's not going to be 1 jot or
- 4:46one title of the law that is going to be removed until all of
- 4:50it has been fulfilled. Well, guess what?
- 4:53All of it had been fulfilled. It is obsolete.
- 4:57Its purpose has been completed and something new has taken its
- 5:01place. And so therefore He has made the
- 5:051st obsolete, and what is becoming obsolete and growing
- 5:10old is ready to vanish away. We're under a new covenant.
- 5:19We have a new high priest. We have better promises through
- 5:27our mediator according to verse 6 of chapter 8.
- 5:30So that brings us into Chapter 9, and in Chapter 9 the emphasis
- 5:36is going to be Jesus as our mediator and as our sacrifice,
- 5:41but he's going to begin by making this comparison in the
- 5:46first half of Chapter 9. He says then indeed, even the
- 5:50first covenant had ordinances of divine service, and an earthly
- 5:55sanctuary for a Tabernacle was prepared.
- 5:59The first part in which was the lampstand, the table, and the
- 6:03showbread, which is called the sanctuary.
- 6:06And behind the second veil, the part of the Tabernacle which is
- 6:09called the holiest of all, which had the golden censor and the
- 6:13Ark of the Covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which
- 6:18were the gold pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded,
- 6:22and the tablets of the covenant. And above it were the cherubim
- 6:26of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat.
- 6:29Of these things, we cannot now speak in detail.
- 6:35In these first 5 verses, he talks about that original
- 6:39Tabernacle that, that original house that God commanded to be
- 6:44constructed. As a matter of fact, he, he's
- 6:46going to go through all of the different things that God
- 6:49ordained through Moses that needed to be built in Exodus
- 6:52chapters 25 through 29. And so you've got all of these
- 6:56different pieces of furniture, for lack of a, a, a better term
- 7:00for them. You've got the Ark of the
- 7:03Covenant, you've got the table of the showbread, you've got the
- 7:07lampstand, you've got the various censors and the places
- 7:13for offering incense and all of those different things that
- 7:17made-up that Old Testament Tabernacle, the place where they
- 7:24would go to offer sacrifices and to offer worship before God.
- 7:30But I want to point out something here that honestly, I
- 7:34looked through several different commentaries over the last week
- 7:36or two, and almost every single one of them fails to place an
- 7:42emphasis here that I think is very important.
- 7:45So I'm going to place it even if it's not found in other places.
- 7:49But he makes the statement here in verse 5.
- 7:51He says of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
- 7:54Now, a lot of people take this particular phrase and they say,
- 7:58you know, he just saying we don't have time to talk about
- 8:00all of this in great depth. We're just going to hit the
- 8:03highlights and move on that. I don't think that's what he's
- 8:06talking about with this statement.
- 8:09When you look at what he's describing, he is describing all
- 8:14of those items and emblems of of the Old Testament worship system
- 8:19that God put in place with Moses.
- 8:25But did you know that nobody that is present at the time of
- 8:28the writing of Hebrews in the 1st century has ever seen any of
- 8:31them? They've made replicas of some of
- 8:37them by the time of the 1st century, but the Jews don't have
- 8:42them anymore. By the time that the book of
- 8:46Hebrews is written, they've never seen the Ark of the
- 8:49Covenant. Nobody has.
- 8:53But by the time the book of Hebrews has been written, they
- 8:56don't know what those original items look like anymore.
- 8:59Well, how do you know that? Turn back to a couple passages
- 9:03of Scripture. I want to emphasize this point
- 9:04because I believe this is central to understanding the
- 9:08argument that's being made by the writer of the book of
- 9:11Hebrews, that you can't go back to the Old Testament because
- 9:15even the things that God ordained in the Law of Moses for
- 9:18worship under the Old Testament, you don't have any more.
- 9:22We can't talk about these things in detail because we can't even
- 9:26see them any longer. They're obsolete.
- 9:30They're gone. They don't exist for you today,
- 9:36he says. But turn back to a couple of
- 9:38passages and I want to I want to illustrate the point.
- 9:42The first one is over. In Second Kings chapter 25,
- 9:47Nebuchadnezzar is taking the children of Israel into
- 9:52captivity. And these statements are made at
- 9:57the end of the book of Second Kings to show to us what has
- 10:01taken place with the fall of Jerusalem and all of these
- 10:06various things. And in Second Kings chapter 25
- 10:10and verse 8 it says, And in the 5th month, on the 7th day of the
- 10:13month, which was the 19th year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of
- 10:17Babylon, Nebu Zaraddin, the captain of the guard, a servant
- 10:22of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem.
- 10:25He burned the House of the Lord and the King's house, all the
- 10:28houses of Jerusalem, that is, all the houses of the great, he
- 10:33burned with fire. And all the army of the
- 10:36Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard, broke down
- 10:39the walls of Jerusalem all around.
- 10:42Then Nebu Zaradin, the captain of the guard, carried away
- 10:45captive the rest of the people who remained in the city, and
- 10:49the defectors who had deserted to the king of Babylon with the
- 10:52rest of the multitude. But the captain of the guard
- 10:56left some of the poor of the land as vine dressers and
- 10:58farmers, The bronze pillars that were in the House of the Lord,
- 11:02and the carts and the bronze sea that were in the House of the
- 11:05Lord. The Chaldeans broke in pieces
- 11:07and carried their bronze to Babylon.
- 11:10They also took away the pots, the shovels, the trimmers, the
- 11:13spoons, and all the bronze utensils with which the priests
- 11:16ministered, the fire pans, the basins, the things of solid gold
- 11:21and solid silver. The captain of the guard took
- 11:24away the 2 pillars, 1 sea, and the carts which Solomon had made
- 11:28for the House of the Lord. The bronze of all the articles
- 11:32was beyond measure. The height of one pillar was 18
- 11:35cubits and the capital that was on it was of bronze.
- 11:39The height of the capital was 3 cubits.
- 11:41The network and pomegranates are all around.
- 11:44The capital were all of bronze. The second pillar was the same
- 11:48with a network. They took everything.
- 11:53Everything that they could lay their hands on in Solomon's
- 11:57temple they took and they tore the rest down to the foundation
- 12:03and burned it. You know what's not in that
- 12:08list? Any of the items that were used
- 12:12for worship in the Temple of Solomon that were originally
- 12:18required by God to be built. Well, you turn over to Jeremiah
- 12:22chapter 52, and in Jeremiah chapter 52, Jeremiah is going to
- 12:28give the very same instance, the very same incident, and he's
- 12:33going to give a similar discussion concerning this in
- 12:38chapter 52, verses 12 through 23.
- 12:42Now we're not going to go through and read all of this
- 12:44because it basically says the exact same thing almost word for
- 12:48word that Second Kings chapter 25 says.
- 12:52But it has the exact same list of what was taken and how much
- 12:57was taken and all of the different things that were done.
- 13:05But none of the items of the temple that were used for
- 13:11worship are listed. Well, maybe it was just an
- 13:14oversight, but now turn over to Ezra chapter one.
- 13:20In Ezra chapter 1, after at the end of the captivity, we're now
- 13:2570 years later, Nebuchadnezzar's not on the throne anymore.
- 13:29As a matter of fact, Cyrus the of the Medes and Persians is now
- 13:34on the throne and the the Babylonian Kingdom no longer
- 13:38exists in the sense in which it was.
- 13:43And in Ezra chapter 1 and in verse 7, it says King Cyrus also
- 13:48brought out the articles of the House of the Lord, which
- 13:51Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and put in the temple
- 13:55of his gods. And King Cyrus of Persia brought
- 13:58them out by the hand of Mithridath the treasurer, and
- 14:02counted them out to Sheshbazar the Prince of Judah.
- 14:06This is the number of them 30 gold platters, 1000 silver
- 14:10platters, 29 knives, 30 gold basins, 410 silver basins of a
- 14:14similar kind, and 1000 other articles.
- 14:18All the articles of gold and silver were 5400.
- 14:23All these Shesh Bazar took with the captives who were brought
- 14:26from Babylon to Jerusalem. So 70 years later, when Cyrus is
- 14:32going to allow the people to go back to Judah and to go back to
- 14:37Jerusalem, what does Cyrus do? All right, he gives back all of
- 14:45the things that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the House of God
- 14:50and, and, and from Jerusalem when he took the city and when
- 14:54he burned it to the ground. You know what's not in any of
- 14:58those lists of what was given back to the people, any of those
- 15:03items from of worship from the temple.
- 15:08As a matter of fact, history also tells us that at the time
- 15:12that Herod's temple was put in place, the the Most Holy Place
- 15:18was nothing but an empty room. When they went to offer the
- 15:22blood sacrifice on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would
- 15:27go in and he would pour the blood on the concrete where the
- 15:31Ark of the Covenant would have been had it been present.
- 15:40I want you to think back to being a Jewish Christian in the
- 15:441st century because as the speaker here talks about all of
- 15:52these things that were found in the temple and in the Tabernacle
- 16:00as God commanded it to be built to start with.
- 16:03He then has to say in verse five of these things we not we don't
- 16:08have time to, but of these things, we cannot now speak in
- 16:13detail why we don't have them anymore.
- 16:19Where did the Ark of the Covenant go?
- 16:22I have absolutely no idea. And that's a rabbit hole we're
- 16:25not crawling down because I've seen Raiders of the Lost Ark
- 16:29too, a warehouse in Germany. That's right.
- 16:34We don't know. They don't know.
- 16:39And just like so many things of old from Scripture, I think by
- 16:46God's Providence, we'll never know.
- 16:49And there's a reason for that which we don't have time for
- 16:52today, Aaron. It's interesting and until you
- 16:56pointed out about Herod's temple and and the emptiness of the
- 17:00Most Holy Place, hadn't ever thought of that in view of the
- 17:04event when Jesus dies, we often think about the veil being read
- 17:09from top to bottom and the the symbolic nature of the veil
- 17:14representing, you know, resurrection, eternity and
- 17:19separation from God. But the other aspect of that,
- 17:22when you consider it is this event lays bare that there's
- 17:30nothing here. So as the veil is rent, as
- 17:34Christ dies, there is this visceral opening where God says
- 17:42this is done, this has been put to an end.
- 17:47There's not even anything here for you to come back to.
- 17:54And isn't that the point? That's what he's talking about
- 17:59here. You're talking about going back.
- 18:01There's nothing there to go back to.
- 18:05We can't talk about this in detail because it doesn't exist
- 18:09anymore. As far as in our presence now,
- 18:15verse 6, I'm sorry, Danny. Also, I, I in my studies through
- 18:22the years and also been informed that the House of records, Herod
- 18:28had burned the House of records. Well, not only that, but later
- 18:33Titus came in, he destroyed the whole temple.
- 18:36So they after the, you know, after so long a period of time,
- 18:41they had no confirmation of who is the Levites.
- 18:45So they could not continue because the priests weren't.
- 18:48Prepared. To continue.
- 18:49Now, from everything that we know, the book of Hebrews is
- 18:52written before 8070. So before the destruction of
- 18:55Jerusalem and before the destruction of of Titus comes
- 18:58through. But yes, you're absolutely
- 19:00right. There's there's nobody that can
- 19:02verify or validate their heritage as a part of a specific
- 19:07tribe. All those records are long gone
- 19:10and they were long gone by the time Jerusalem is burned in
- 19:158070. They're no longer available.
- 19:18So verse 6 Now when these things had been thus prepared, the
- 19:23priests always went into the first part of the Tabernacle,
- 19:27performing the services, but into the second part the high
- 19:30priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he
- 19:34offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in
- 19:38ignorance. The Holy Spirit indicating this,
- 19:41that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest.
- 19:45While the first Tabernacle was still standing, it was now.
- 19:50Notice the phraseology here. It was symbolic for the present
- 19:55time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, which
- 20:00cannot make Him who performed the service perfect in regard to
- 20:04the conscience, concerned only with foods and drinks, various
- 20:09washings and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of
- 20:14Reformation, What was the purpose?
- 20:19Of the Old Testament system. Under the Old Testament system,
- 20:27the priest went into the first part of the Tabernacle
- 20:30performing the services. The sacrifices are offered at
- 20:33the altar of burnt offering in the outer court of the
- 20:36Tabernacle and of the temple. You have all of these things
- 20:40that are being done and the High priest is going to go into the
- 20:44Most Holy Place once a year when he offers for himself people's
- 20:49sins. But the writer of Hebrews says
- 20:51the Holy Spirit indicates this, that the way into the holiest of
- 20:55all. Notice the last the past tense
- 20:59phrase was not made manifest yet during the time of the Old
- 21:11Testament, when these offerings were being made, when these
- 21:14things were laid out. The means of coming into the
- 21:18holiest of all. Where's the holiest of all?
- 21:22The presence of. God.
- 21:25The very place. Of God.
- 21:27That opportunity, that ability, was not yet made manifest while
- 21:33the first Tabernacle was still standing.
- 21:37You couldn't do it. This was as close as you could
- 21:40come. To the presence of.
- 21:44God to the place of God to bringing your offering directly
- 21:48before God. And it wasn't intended to be the
- 21:51final place. It was symbolic of what was to
- 21:55come. The things that were placed
- 21:58there, the things that God ordered to be there were to set
- 22:02the foundation for what was going to come later.
- 22:09It was symbolic for when. According to.
- 22:14Verse 9. It was symbolic for the present
- 22:19time. It was pointing.
- 22:22You forward to now, in the time of the writing of the book of
- 22:26Hebrews, to the time of Christ. It was symbolic to bring you to
- 22:33this time and this place. Because those.
- 22:42Things could not make him who performed the service perfect in
- 22:47regard to the conscience. All of those things.
- 22:51The writer of the book of Hebrews says we're meant to
- 22:53bring you to this place and to this time.
- 22:55Now you're talking about turning around and going back to that.
- 23:00Let me show you. Why you can't.
- 23:02Let me show you why you shouldn't even want to.
- 23:06That's the rest of. Chapter 9 because he continues
- 23:11in verse 11 and he says, but Christ came as high priest of
- 23:16the good things to come. These were symbolic of what was
- 23:21to come and of what was going to be here for the present time.
- 23:27So what has Jesus brought that is so different?
- 23:31Christ came as high priests of the good things to come with the
- 23:35greater and more perfect Tabernacle, not made with hands,
- 23:39that is, not of this creation, not with the blood of bulls or
- 23:43of goats and calves, but with His own blood.
- 23:46He entered the most holy place once for all, having obtained
- 23:51eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and
- 23:55goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean,
- 23:59sanctifies for the purifying of the fret of the flesh, how much
- 24:03more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
- 24:07offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience
- 24:12from dead works to serve the living God.
- 24:20It's not just. Different, he says.
- 24:24It's better. And.
- 24:27There's a difference between different and better, right?
- 24:31There are a lot of. Things that are different, that
- 24:35doesn't necessarily make them better.
- 24:38You see it on the. Packaging in the stores all the
- 24:40time, right? Brand new, never before seen.
- 24:47We've reengineered everything. All of the things that you like
- 24:51in this particular product, we threw them out and we put new
- 24:53stuff in. Is it better?
- 24:59It's new, but is it? Better.
- 25:08The emphasis of the writer of Hebrews here is that this is not
- 25:11just something that's different, this is something better.
- 25:15And I think I saw a hand over here just a moment ago.
- 25:17Adam I. Was going to ask if it's not
- 25:22sidetracking too much comment on the synagogue.
- 25:26You know, there's not much any discussion this here, but you go
- 25:30to action and in the in the. Personal Ministry of.
- 25:34Pride you have the synagogue how does that fit in with what we're
- 25:41talking about here so so when you.
- 25:43Come to the synagogues during the time of of the captivity and
- 25:47during the time in which the the Israelites are then scattered
- 25:51around the world in the time after the captivity.
- 25:54They had to have. Places to worship.
- 25:57They were no longer in one centralized location, southern.
- 26:00So the idea of the synagogue was developed and they would have
- 26:05places of worship in every city where, if memory serves me
- 26:09correctly, there were there were 10 heads of household or ten
- 26:12families of, of the Israelite people that were present within
- 26:16the city. They would have a synagogue and
- 26:18they would create a place of worship.
- 26:21But even then, they didn't replicate the Tabernacle or the
- 26:24temple or, or any of those things.
- 26:27They simply had a place to gather together to to read and
- 26:31to study and to pray and to worship God together.
- 26:35But it doesn't. Replicate this and it can't
- 26:37replace this in any way, shape or form.
- 26:41It was the best they could do given the circumstances in which
- 26:44they were. You think part of that?
- 26:46Was the lack of prophecy the. Messiah coming?
- 26:52Emphasizing that you know when Jesus would go in and read from
- 26:54the world. I think it was.
- 26:57Also a part of the Providence of God in preparing the way for the
- 27:00gospel of Christ because when when the the apostles went out
- 27:04throughout their ministry, you know and and the apostle Paul,
- 27:07we have the most information about where was the 1st place he
- 27:10went in any city that he came to why God fearing God.
- 27:15Believing all right, it's. The first place to find the
- 27:18people that say they believe in God.
- 27:23In areas. Where the majority of the rest
- 27:26of the city, if not the entirety of the rest of the city, are
- 27:29steeped in idolatry and don't know anything about God.
- 27:34God. Providentially created a way by
- 27:37means of the synagogue system to have an open place where you
- 27:40could walk into in any of the major cities of the world at the
- 27:43time of the 1st century and proclaim the gospel of Jesus to
- 27:47people who already claimed to believe in God.
- 27:50Isn't it funny how that? Works.
- 27:55And so you have. These offerings that are going
- 27:58to be made. Everett, did you have something?
- 28:01You have these offerings that are being made, but in Christ we
- 28:04have a better system, we have better offerings.
- 28:09It says verse 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats in the
- 28:12ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean sanctifies for the
- 28:16purifying of the flesh, how much more does the blood of Christ,
- 28:23who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to
- 28:27God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the
- 28:30living God. If the if the Old Testament
- 28:33system could cleanse the physical.
- 28:37How much better is? Christ for cleansing the
- 28:39spiritual. He continues in verse. 15 And
- 28:45for this reason, because of the sacrifice and the power of it,
- 28:50for this reason he is the mediator of the new covenant by
- 28:55means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions
- 29:00under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive
- 29:04the promise of the eternal inheritance.
- 29:10Let. Me ask you a question when did
- 29:17full redemption come for those who were under the law of Moses?
- 29:27When did it? Come.
- 29:28When did it come? When did full redemption arrive?
- 29:32I guess you could say on. The day of Pentecost, when the
- 29:35blood. Of Christ was shed, that's true
- 29:38too. But then.
- 29:39The church was only established right?
- 29:41The church was not established officially until the day of
- 29:43Pentecost, but the Redemptive. Peace, that was.
- 29:48Missing. Was the blood of Christ?
- 29:54Were they redeemed by God in the course of their life, as though
- 30:00the blood of Christ had already been offered?
- 30:02Yes, they were. They weren't sitting there in
- 30:06limbo, hoping that maybe Christ would come along one day.
- 30:10God knew exactly. What was going to transpire?
- 30:12And he redeemed them as though it already had.
- 30:15But the actual price hadn't been paid until Jesus shed his blood
- 30:20on the cross. The statement of verse. 15 is
- 30:27extremely powerful because it says he shed his blood by means
- 30:33of death. He is the mediator of the New
- 30:35Covenant for the Redemption of the transgressions under the
- 30:42first covenant. It's not just about us.
- 30:47It's not just about those that came after the time of Jesus.
- 30:52His redemption was just as much for those who had lived under
- 30:57that first covenant. Because the blood.
- 31:00Of bulls and goats does not have the ability to take away sin.
- 31:07OK. Adam I I.
- 31:09Think that when you mentioned the blood of Christ that you
- 31:12want to go. I thought that there's always
- 31:16been a lot of me if God the Godhead was in control.
- 31:22And Jesus was hanging. On the cross and shedding his
- 31:24blood. That's God was in trouble.
- 31:29Those wrong soldiers and the Jews, yeah, they they crucified.
- 31:35God was the one. You know when you.
- 31:39Go through and you read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
- 31:41One of the things that should stand out.
- 31:45Over and over. Again, is the fact that as much
- 31:51as the the scribes and the Pharisees and the Sadducees and
- 31:56the priests and even the the Roman leaders thought that they
- 32:00were in control, they thought that they were in charge?
- 32:04Our Lord wasn't. Crucified until our Lord felt
- 32:08that it was the time that everything was right for him to
- 32:11be crucified. There are times where they're
- 32:14coming after him and he just looks at the disciples and he
- 32:16says my time is not yet here. And then there's the time when
- 32:21he looks at the disciples and he says the time of my departure is
- 32:24at hand. And then they're trying to say,
- 32:25Oh no, no, no, no, it's not yet. Oh yes, it is.
- 32:30Who was? The one who was in charge,
- 32:33actually, Jesus, died at exactly the time and in exactly the
- 32:38place and under the exact circumstances he intended to,
- 32:43that you weren't actually doing anything other than fulfilling
- 32:46His purpose when we talk. About the blood of Christ
- 32:52cleansing the Old Testament people, I think we need to look
- 32:59at the fact that Scripture tells us that time is meaningless to
- 33:04God. We also have a passage in there
- 33:06where it says 1000 years is like a day, and that's highly
- 33:12misinterpreted by many people. But if if you relate that to
- 33:17this passage 9:15 in Hebrew, it makes perfect sense, yes.
- 33:24And and again. There's another passage that
- 33:26does say that Christ gave himself.
- 33:30Nobody took his life. That's proof again that the time
- 33:34was just the right time. All the little mini phrases that
- 33:39that we hang our hat on, sometimes they all tie together,
- 33:44yes. All right, I'm.
- 33:48A. Very literal person and when I
- 33:51hear this. Conversation.
- 33:52I see how somebody. Could misconstrue God was in
- 33:55control to mean. God.
- 33:57Calls or or made happen rather than the God allowed yes, and
- 34:00those are very important to speak they are they.
- 34:05Are and then thank you for bringing that up because that's
- 34:07absolutely the case. You know God is in control.
- 34:14But he. Utilizes the intentions and the
- 34:17thoughts and the purposes of man to bring about those things that
- 34:22are in His will and that He has been preparing for for all of
- 34:26this time. And that's what you see coming
- 34:29to fruition with Christ, verse 16.
- 34:33For where there is a. Testament.
- 34:37We talk about the old. And the New Testament all the
- 34:39time. What is a testament?
- 34:42We would call it a. Will it is it is that which goes
- 34:47into account when? The time of death for.
- 34:53Where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be
- 34:57the death of the testator. Verse 16 For a testament is in
- 35:02force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the
- 35:06testator lives. Therefore not even with the
- 35:10first covenant, or not even the first covenant was dedicated
- 35:14without blood. For when Moses had spoken every
- 35:17precept to all the people according to the law, he took
- 35:21the blood of calves and goats with water, scarlet wool, and
- 35:25hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
- 35:29saying, This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded
- 35:33you. Then likewise he sprinkled with
- 35:36blood both the Tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry.
- 35:41And according to the law almost all things are purified with
- 35:45blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
- 35:57For most of my experience with people's studies of the Book of
- 36:02Hebrews, this is one of the most well known sections of the Book
- 36:06of Hebrews. And rightfully so.
- 36:10Because of the level of emphasis that it places on the sacrifice
- 36:13of Jesus. But I want to pull out just a
- 36:16couple of things as we go here before we get into this last
- 36:19section of Chapter 9. The first one.
- 36:23Is. The emphasis.
- 36:26That the writer of the book of Hebrews has on the fact that the
- 36:30New Testament could not come into effect without the death of
- 36:34Jesus. It is his covenant.
- 36:39It could not come until after his death, which by the way
- 36:46point of contact we. Had a lot of people.
- 36:49Who argue about the thief on the cross when it comes to his
- 36:55salvation and whether that is emblematic of our salvation
- 36:59today. Guess what?
- 37:03The thief on the. Cross was on that side of the
- 37:05death of Christ. The New Testament was not yet in
- 37:10place yet because the blood had not been shed.
- 37:13The covenant had not been bought.
- 37:15These things are not in place yet.
- 37:20They're still living under the Old Covenant.
- 37:22It was not yet finished. The emphasis here the testament
- 37:28cannot come into effect before the death of the testator.
- 37:33But I want you to. Notice something else he's going
- 37:35to emphasize in verses 19 and 20, the blood that was going to
- 37:39be utilized to sanctify the the law and the items of the law and
- 37:45the the ability of the workings of the law under the law of
- 37:50Moses. And the statement is going to be
- 37:52made in verse 20. This is the blood of the
- 37:54covenant which God has commanded you.
- 37:57It's quoting Exodus chapter 24, verse 8.
- 38:01But it sounds really similar to something else, doesn't it?
- 38:07When you read that. Phrase.
- 38:10Maybe it's just me, but when you read that phrase, what does that
- 38:12immediately take you to when Jesus institutes the Lord's
- 38:18Supper, right? He took the cup when he had Sup
- 38:22saying this blood. Or this cup is?
- 38:26The New Testament in my blood. This do as.
- 38:32Much as you drink it in remembrance of me.
- 38:38This is a blood of. The covenant which God has
- 38:41commanded you. In like.
- 38:45Form Jesus is going to institute the Lord's Supper as the same
- 38:50representation of the blood that redeems mankind, so likewise the
- 38:58blood was sprinkled on the Tabernacle and all the vessels
- 39:01of the ministry, and according to the law, the Old Testament
- 39:06law, almost all things are purified with blood.
- 39:11And without the shedding. Of blood there is no remission
- 39:14now. Verse 23.
- 39:15Therefore. Because.
- 39:20Of the things of the old law. And because the old law was
- 39:23symbolic for the present time, therefore it was necessary that
- 39:29the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with
- 39:32these. But the heavenly.
- 39:35Things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
- 39:39For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands
- 39:43which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, into the
- 39:48holiest of all, as He called it earlier in Chapter 9, but into
- 39:52heaven itself now to appear in the presence of God.
- 39:59For who? For us.
- 40:05His death was. Just as much about those under
- 40:09the first testament to redeem them, to bring full redemption
- 40:13to them. But he now is.
- 40:16In the presence of God in heaven itself for us.
- 40:22Not that he should. Offer Himself often, as the high
- 40:25priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of
- 40:28another, because he then would have had to suffer often since
- 40:31the foundation of the world. But now once at the end of the
- 40:35ages, he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of
- 40:39himself. And as it is appointed for men
- 40:42to die once, but after this the judgement, so Christ was offered
- 40:47once to bear the sins of many. To those who.
- 40:51Eagerly wait for him. He will appear a second time
- 40:55apart from sin for salvation. If you're thinking about trying
- 41:09to go back and hold on to the Old Testament law, Hebrews
- 41:16Chapter 9 is devastating. And if you can read.
- 41:24Hebrews Chapter 9 and understand Hebrews Chapter 9 and not be
- 41:27emotionally affected by what Jesus did for you.
- 41:33We need to have. Some reading comprehension
- 41:35classes. Because the.
- 41:42Emphasis at the end of Chapter 9.
- 41:47Not of what? Jesus did for everybody else.
- 41:51And I don't care whether. You're a 1st century Jewish
- 41:53Christian who is trying to decide whether or not everything
- 41:57that you're enduring for Jesus is worth it, or whether you're a
- 42:0221st century Christian who is trying to determine whether or
- 42:06not giving up on all of the things that it costs us in this
- 42:10world in order to serve Christ is worth it.
- 42:20If we. Truly understand Hebrews Chapter
- 42:249. It should cause us to stand so
- 42:29firm on our convictions that nothing will ever move us.
- 42:34Neil. I think kind.
- 42:37Of the underlying. Message that I take from all
- 42:41that is kind. Of we're not.
- 42:45In the place of God we are not, we can.
- 42:48We want us to try to understand the best that we can.
- 42:52But I can't say with. Authority.
- 42:55What God's judgment is of anyone, including myself, I
- 42:58can't say with authority. And you have.
- 43:01Romans 2 verse 14 And when the Gentiles, who do not have the
- 43:07law by nature do what the law requires, they are a law of
- 43:11themselves, even though they do not have the law, they show that
- 43:15the work work of the law is written on their hearts, while
- 43:18their conscience also bears witness in their conflicting
- 43:22thoughts. Accuse or even excuse them.
- 43:24And he goes on to say. You have the law.
- 43:29And you teach the law, which is what we do.
- 43:31We have the law, but we have the word of God.
- 43:34And we teach the word of God, but we're not in judgment of
- 43:37others. Because he says.
- 43:40Don't you also sin? Don't you also you say don't
- 43:43commit adultery, Don't you Do you commit adultery?
- 43:45You do this, you do that. And I think he's just pointing
- 43:47out that church is a place for sinners to come.
- 43:51To God to try to do His. Will, and the way that we know
- 43:56His will is through the truth, and the way that we know the
- 43:59truth is through His word. That's as far as.
- 44:02I can take it because when I have the verses that say they
- 44:04were a law of themselves, it's like, OK, what happened to the?
- 44:07How? How are the Jews?
- 44:08Forgiven. They were completed through the
- 44:11the covenant that Jesus came, and he completed what bulls and
- 44:14goats couldn't do. What about Gentiles?
- 44:18He just spoke to the. Gentiles, he said.
- 44:20They became a law to themselves. That gets correct for me.
- 44:24To be able to. Say with I don't like again, I I
- 44:26don't disagree with anything you say, but I don't have the
- 44:29authority to say it's always God's authority.
- 44:33And there's a lot he doesn't tell us.
- 44:35And that that's just just my thought on it just to kind of
- 44:38complete the circle because we spoke to the Old Testament.
- 44:42What happened to the Jews? How were they forgotten?
- 44:46I. Don't believe we have a?
- 44:47God, that damned everyone. That wasn't a Jew.
- 44:50Before the time of Christ. And I think this verse in Romans
- 44:52supports that idea. But I I can't say with authority
- 44:56God's God is God, so. Bell's about to ring.
- 45:01I'm not going to have much time to go into it, and that may be a
- 45:04discussion for another time. Let me just place an emphasis on
- 45:08the fact that when you're talking about Romans chapter 2,
- 45:10he is talking about the law from the Old Testament side of
- 45:13things. He's talking about the Law of
- 45:15Moses. The Gentiles were not under the
- 45:16law of Moses. They were still under the laws
- 45:19of patriarchy and the things that God had put in place.
- 45:22One of the amazing things to me about the Old Testament is it
- 45:24tells us that God didn't just care about the Israelites, He
- 45:28cared about all mankind even under the days of the Old
- 45:31Testament. Why is Jonah sent to Nineveh?
- 45:33Nineveh is not an Israelite city.
- 45:35Nineveh is not a city of people that believe in God.
- 45:38They are a city of people that actually do turn to God for a
- 45:41period of time. They turn back away a generation
- 45:44later, but they do turn to God and repent.
- 45:47There's actually a period that is kind of the lost period of
- 45:50Assyrian history when all of these things for a very short
- 45:53period of time, right around the time of Jonah, all of the
- 45:56different things that you used to find with the Assyrians.
- 45:59You've got this gap in here. Kind of funny how that works.
- 46:03The reality is God had a means for Gentiles to be saved even
- 46:07outside of the Law of Moses. In the days of the Law of Moses,
- 46:11they didn't have to become Jews in order to be righteous in his
- 46:14sight. And there's a lot of material in
- 46:17the Old Testament that supports that particular idea.
- 46:20And there's a lot of material in the New Testament that supports
- 46:22that. But in our day and time, final
- 46:25thought before we close, in our day and time, there is only one
- 46:27way to get to heaven, and that is by means of the blood of
- 46:31Christ. And there is no Gray area in
- 46:34that particular arena because God has made it definitive here
- 46:38in the Scriptures. Thank you so much.
