- 0:58Don Armstrong: Painthouse himself.
- 1:00Don Armstrong: Randy, good morning.
- 1:00Don Armstrong: My God, are we in the office?
- 1:02Don Armstrong: What is this?
- 1:03Don Armstrong: A new showroom?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: There is a little showroom here, yeah.
- 1:08Don Armstrong: Has it always been there?
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: We're doing fun.
- 1:10Don Armstrong: Has it always been there?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: This is a new place.
- 1:15Don Armstrong: Wait a minute.
- 1:16Don Armstrong: What the the is is this is an addition to the shop?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: This is the shop, the new version of the shop.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: We're out in Utah now.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Are you serious?
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: I am serious.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I can prove it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: There's mountains outside the front door.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So you guys have moved?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: We're in the process.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, an opportunity presented itself, and I have long wanted to live in or near mountainous terrain.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: So I'm 60 years old and decided if I don't do it now, I'm never gonna do it.
- 1:51Don Armstrong: Oh my god.
- 1:52Don Armstrong: Good for you.
- 1:53Don Armstrong: Well, congratulations.
- 1:54Don Armstrong: We had no clue.
- 1:56Don Armstrong: You didn't call and tell us that you were moving or anything.
- 1:58Jeff Dziekan: Well, no, I don't have a pickup truck, so I wouldn't help you move.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: After this, I got to call and tell Jen.
- 2:06Don Armstrong: She's listening, she found out.
- 2:08Don Armstrong: Now we know that's not the case because uh she's the boss around there, thank goodness, and uh is is a guiding hand and you're uh messing around with cars over there.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: She she was gonna say hi, but she decided to run an errand, and uh she's doing some fun stuff too.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: So we're having a good time out here.
- 2:25Don Armstrong: Well, that's good.
- 2:26Don Armstrong: I'm glad to hear it.
- 2:27Don Armstrong: Well, congratulations, man.
- 2:28Don Armstrong: That's my thank you.
- 2:29Don Armstrong: So uh will you ever come back to Houston again?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: There's we're still back and forth.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I still have work that's still in Texas that will come out here ultimately.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: A couple of them won't, a couple of them will.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Um, we're just in that that in-between phase, you know.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: This shop is called Altered Customs, and we are I've partnered with Alex, the owner.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: We're just sort of mashing the two shops together to see what we can make happen.
- 2:56unknown: Wow.
- 2:57Don Armstrong: Well, knowing you, I think that that won't be a problem.
- 3:00Don Armstrong: Uh, yeah, uh we know that it'll happen.
- 3:02Don Armstrong: And uh are are you out there uh close to uh Kendig?
- 3:06Don Armstrong: Kendig?
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Same city.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Uh we're in what's called South Jordan, it's a suburb of Salt Lake.
- 3:14Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 3:14Don Armstrong: Where is he?
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Over in, I guess it's Salt Lake proper.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Closer to the to the big mountains, as we call them.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: There's we're in a valley between two mountain ranges, and the eastern side is where he's at.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: We're on the western side.
- 3:28Don Armstrong: So, do you have anything that you've contributed to your partner's shop that you brought from Houston?
- 3:36Don Armstrong: Did you bring the uh Pink Roadrunner?
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Pink Roadrunner is here.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, it is in the trailer.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Yesterday we did a photo shoot at a local uh kind of a media studio type uh uh uh warehouse, if you will.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: And uh so it's in the trailer, but here's the cougar.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: We drove it's up here getting finished.
- 3:56Don Armstrong: Oh my god, we haven't seen the cougar painted.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's there she is.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if I can I flip this camera around from restream, I don't know.
- 4:05Mike Marrs: You should be able to, yeah.
- 4:06Mike Marrs: Your camera should still work.
- 4:08Mike Marrs: It it'd be the same way as at the studio in Houston.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm apparently currently technically challenged, so I'm not gonna mess it up.
- 4:17Mike Marrs: It's uh it's uh lack of oxygen at that higher L.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: There she is.
- 4:23Don Armstrong: That is some really good weed up there in the mountains.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Not here, some of the other states have it, but Utah does not.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Well, so anyway, there she is.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: That looks great.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we've we've uh we've shown it, and now we're just working out all the little bugs trying to get it ready to drive.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: He's gonna drive it.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Is he not a daily driver?
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Not daily, but to go to get you know cars and coffees, you're you the type of shows you guys hang out at, that kind of thing.
- 4:53Don Armstrong: Yeah, very nice.
- 4:55Don Armstrong: Nice, nice, I'm excited.
- 4:57Don Armstrong: So uh are you are you still doing work out of the Houston shop?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Not at the moment, no.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: The no ultimately we'll probably either rent or sell the property.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: So if anybody's looking for a turnkey house shop, uh holler at me.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I may have something for you.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: We know people, yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:16Don Armstrong: I saw a 57 Chevy back there.
- 5:18Don Armstrong: Is that yours or is that his?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: No, none of them are mine, you know that.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Um 62 or 61 vet here.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: We're finishing up.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: LS motor aftermarket chassis.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: The 57, just a really nice driver.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Um, factory chassis with some bolt-on stuff, small block Chevy, you know, just a cruiser, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: I love that though.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: It looks so clean and cool.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: It's just your it's you can't go wrong with a red 57 Bel Air at all.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And the uh El Camino you see tucking in under there is one we brought up from Houston that we've had ongoing for a while.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of hard to give you a shop tour with the camera backwards, but well that's the the environment we have here.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: We got some interesting projects sort of stacked up there waiting to be dealt with.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: An old Barracuda Cadillac, Mercedes.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: I believe that's a another Cadillac.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: So yeah, some neat stuff.
- 6:16Don Armstrong: Didn't you have a helper or two uh in the in the Houston shop?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: We did, but uh over time, when this became a I guess a reality, you know, they were all offered the opportunity to to follow me out here and and they all chose to stay in Houston, which is certainly their prerogative.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Right, it's beautiful.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Um, although more expensive, and and Salt Lake is a much bigger city than I really gave it credit for.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Interesting, yeah.
- 6:46Don Armstrong: Well, I remember that they used to have the well, they had the Olympics there back in the 80s, right?
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:53Mike Marrs: Well, itself, Randy, it looks like you you've got a little more room as far as some things go.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Quite a bit more room.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you can kind of see behind me as I'm walking here, but yeah, it's it's a warehouse type environment.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Alex, my partner, owns several other businesses here.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: He's his real success has been in the masonry concrete industry, so we are kind of attached to his uh complex here.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I see.
- 7:20Don Armstrong: Very how many how many square feet in the shop there?
- 7:23Don Armstrong: Do you know?
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Uh I I think it's about 15,000 roughly.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Oh it's quite a bit more than I had in Houston, that's for sure.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I can't tell if I'm staying in the camera.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: You are fine.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's fine.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a nice big space.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: We've got we do everything here, much like Texas, everything but upholstery.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: So we do the fab work, the paint, the body, the mechanical, the electrical.
- 7:48Don Armstrong: I bet you they got some uh fab, uh some uh uh upholstery guys around there somewhere.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: There's there's one we're using out in uh his kind of we say around the mountain.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Um he's very good.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Uh Seems Impossible is their name, kind of catchy.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh he's done several for these guys, and I've got two shops in Texas.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: It's funny, I've for years been longing for upholstery shops in Texas because we went everywhere else, and now that we have found some good shops in Texas, um, Sculpt Garage and MTI, I've left.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 8:27Mike Marrs: It's all in the timing.
- 8:28Don Armstrong: I have to ask now the racks that I'm seeing some of the cars on up there.
- 8:32Don Armstrong: Did you bring those from Houston or were they there?
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: No, no, I I brought very little equipment.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: This was a an operational up and running facility, and uh I just kind of stepped in here and brought a few things, but not much.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: That they they were doing good work before I ever got here.
- 8:49Don Armstrong: So, are there people that you've kind of inherited from the old shop that was there?
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: There's a whole crew, great guys.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, we've got I think myself and six others at the moment.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: So can always always use more if anybody's in the Salt Lake area and look and holler at us.
- 9:05Don Armstrong: Or in the Houston area and want to go to Salt Lake.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: If you want out of the humidity, I can help you.
- 9:10Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 9:11Don Armstrong: Uh, so obviously Jen is involved in this somehow.
- 9:15Don Armstrong: You gonna spill the beans on that or no?
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Well, she's uh like Jen, she's involved in in everything.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Um she's uh it's hard to explain.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: She's part of a an ongoing kind of a road tour, like you're talking about this morning, but in another location, and I'm not sure I'm allowed to talk about it yet.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So she's a roadie.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: She's helped, yeah, kinda.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: She's my roadie.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Um she's helping uh with that.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Around here, they also have a complete full service print shop.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: So if you need t-shirts, hats, you know, marketing things, that's another one of the businesses here.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: She's helping with them.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So she just she's a little bit of everything to everybody.
- 10:02Don Armstrong: Little bit of this, a little bit of that.
- 10:03Don Armstrong: Yeah, there you go.
- 10:04Don Armstrong: A great recipe for uh a great outcome.
- 10:07Don Armstrong: Well, uh, this is this is really exciting news.
- 10:10Don Armstrong: So you've been holding back on us.
- 10:11Don Armstrong: You didn't did you tell Mars this?
- 10:14Don Armstrong: We could have done a remote.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, well, it's it's been ongoing and until it became sort of official, which was not long ago.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to really stir the pot and jinx it in any way.
- 10:25Mike Marrs: So uh now it's official.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Now that it's official, here we are.
- 10:31Don Armstrong: Well, it's fantastic.
- 10:33Don Armstrong: Looks like you got a really state-of-the-art paint booth in there, too.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: We've actually got two.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Um, if you look at the setup here, if I can do this correctly, uh, right there is the bodywork booth, and over there is the paint booth.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So we have a booth for kind of the dirty work and then a booth for the clean work.
- 10:50Don Armstrong: Gotcha.
- 10:51Don Armstrong: So you can do all the ugly the sanding and and the detail work before it goes into the paint without dusting up everything in the shop.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: You got it, yes, sir.
- 11:02Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Well, wow.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Here's one I can't wait to get my hands on.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: We got a 66 XKE convertible.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And oh my god, I I've loved those cars all my life.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: So I'm finally gonna get to make one pretty.
- 11:17Mike Marrs: Yeah, is it gonna have a drop there?
- 11:19Mike Marrs: There's another Corvette body.
- 11:21Mike Marrs: You got lots of stuff to play with.
- 11:22Don Armstrong: Well, let's go back to the XKE because does it have the original engine in it?
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, yes, yes, it's all the original hardware, and it's gonna stay that way.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: You know, we're not gonna we're not gonna pro tour it or resto mod it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: It's gonna stay a Jaguar and pure to its roots.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Just I've got an interesting, what I think is an interesting idea for color on it, and we'll see.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: We'll see what happens.
- 11:46Don Armstrong: So, what kind of motor does the Jaguar have in it?
- 11:49Don Armstrong: Is it a V12?
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: The six.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: The Nline?
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: The Nline Six?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh-huh.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one of the one of the prettiest engines ever made.
- 11:58Don Armstrong: And and is it an automatic?
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Nope, manual.
- 12:01Don Armstrong: A manual four speed?
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 12:05Don Armstrong: I guessed something right.
- 12:07Don Armstrong: I know I'm sorry, I don't, I don't not up on my Jaguars.
- 12:10Jeff Dziekan: Well, I suggest I suggest uh an LS then tub it out.
- 12:14Jeff Dziekan: No, yeah, no, he's not going to do that.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna do it painting black.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: You know, if if it wasn't such a good car, it's very pure, it's very original.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'd go for that, but uh it's too good to change.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: We're just gonna upgrade the paint, freshen up the interior, and and it's a Houston customer, and we'll send it home after that.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: You can drive it home, yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: That would be a fun road trip.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: That way, yeah, it would.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: And XKE through the mountains.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, that would be awesome.
- 12:43Don Armstrong: Now, are you are you currently working on something other than getting the shop set up and all that, or have you already got all that done?
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: The shop's up and running.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: I I'm here just uh trying to fit in as best I can.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: We have a wonderful painter already.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Scotty is his name.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Uh his real name is also Randy, but he goes by Scotty.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um so uh I'm not gonna step on his toes.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: I don't need to.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: I I still enjoy other parts of the process.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: If I need to paint, I will.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: We still sell our custom colors, so you know, things like that are still as they were.
- 13:18Don Armstrong: And so if we wanted to get a hold of you, because uh we've got some sort of special project and we want some special paint, then we just go to painthouse.com.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, or you can email me or text me.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: It usually starts with a phone call or a text, and we just take it from there.
- 13:35Jeff Dziekan: So the painthouse is still going to be the active name, or are you changing the name also at a later date?
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: The the plan is to label this painthouse.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I thought about Paint House West or Paint House something else, but we decided just to keep it simple and uh and at some point it will be branded Painthouse, yes.
- 13:55Jeff Dziekan: Oh, very good.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: That is very cool.
- 13:58Jeff Dziekan: Are you excited?
- 13:59Jeff Dziekan: I'm excited.
- 14:00Don Armstrong: You know, it's it's it's hard to tell with really portraiting about excitement.
- 14:03Don Armstrong: Oh, it's all those paint fumes, you know.
- 14:05Don Armstrong: That's what it is.
- 14:06Don Armstrong: But you know, uh it's it's funny because I know inside you're really pumped.
- 14:10Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love being out here.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: The the city's wonderful, the the lack of traffic is nice, the lack of humidity is outstanding, and uh everybody's nice.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: You know what you know what you don't hear here?
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Nobody honks their horns.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: They let you in traffic.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: If you're hauling a trailer, they let you get in and out of lanes.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: It's they're very polite people here.
- 14:30Mike Marrs: How big of a town is it in the area that you're in?
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: You said you're outside There's tons of little uh dozens, if not hundreds, of little birds all around Salt Lake.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Um Salt Lake itself is not that big, but the whole area, kind of like Houston, right?
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: It's all spread out.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And uh there's thirty or fifty little cities around Houston, but Houston proper it's big, but it's not the whole area by any means.
- 14:57Mike Marrs: Right, right, right, right.
- 14:58Mike Marrs: So you're in a big city, but you don't feel like you're in a big city.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I guess that's the way to put it, right.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: How's Jen handling all this?
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: She's uh believe it or not, she was more excited about it than I was.
- 15:10Don Armstrong: She's thriving, is what she's doing.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: She's we miss our people in Houston for sure, our friends, kids, grandkids, obviously, but it's fun to have a new, I don't know, direction.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, we've been in that place for 30 years, dang near, I think, 25, and it was just time for a change.
- 15:30Don Armstrong: Now we didn't hear about the house.
- 15:32Don Armstrong: Is there a house attached to this property, or yeah, do you get to actually go home and back and forth?
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: At the moment, we are living in an apartment upstairs, which is nice because again, much like in Houston, I'm I live at work.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you'll be able to see it, but up there, those windows, that's sure sort of a loft apartment they have built into this warehouse, and we're just able to live up there.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: It's nice, convenient.
- 15:56Don Armstrong: Yeah, no kidding.
- 15:57Jeff Dziekan: There's there's a a television show out of Utah about aliens and space and kind of things out there.
- 16:03Jeff Dziekan: I've I don't know if you've heard of that, but uh, I catch it on TV every now and then.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I have not, but rumor has it there's a lot of that kind of stuff going on around here.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's an actual TV show about it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 16:15Don Armstrong: We'll we'll come over there and we'll we'll give you a tour of that aspect of your new life.
- 16:22Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 16:22Don Armstrong: Oh my god.

- 19:02Jeff Dziekan: I don't think a lot of people are, but it is what it is.
- 19:04Jeff Dziekan: So go ahead and check out the code.
- 19:05Don Armstrong: Which one is that?
- 19:06Jeff Dziekan: It's the Four Wide.

- 19:07Don Armstrong: NHRA Four Wide.
- 19:09Jeff Dziekan: The Z Max driveway.
- 19:10Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 19:10Jeff Dziekan: Uh you got Formula One is still kind of uh off May 24th, just as toward the end of next month, is when they're gonna be back racing again.
- 19:17Jeff Dziekan: Uh they've been off because of the conflict in the Mideast.
- 19:20Jeff Dziekan: You've got the Long Beach ran last week, so May 9th for the Indianapolis road course coming up.
- 19:25Jeff Dziekan: They're gonna be testing and running and doing all kinds of stuff, the prelim to the Indy 500 coming up on uh the end of the month.
- 19:33Don Armstrong: Wait a minute.
- 19:33Don Armstrong: They run a road course?
- 19:34Don Armstrong: Yeah, they run a road course, yeah.
- 19:35Jeff Dziekan: Absolutely.
- 19:36Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 19:36Jeff Dziekan: Oh, and then you've got the NASCAR boys, uh, the folks there, they're in Talladega, so it's Dega, baby.
- 19:43Don Armstrong: I've been to Talladega.
- 19:44Don Armstrong: Yep, you've got a massive racetrack.
- 19:46Jeff Dziekan: Yep, uh, 3 p.m.
- 19:47Jeff Dziekan: Central on the CW network for the uh O'Reilly and then the Big Cup guys are tomorrow, 3 o'clock on Fox.
- 19:54Jeff Dziekan: And then uh our boys, uh not going to be running until May 15th and 16th, but that's the lawnmower racing event.
- 20:00Jeff Dziekan: So get caught up on that.
- 20:01Jeff Dziekan: The Mid-America Motor Racing Series, the Slingin' Dirt Nationals are the WRD Motor Raceway.
- 20:08Jeff Dziekan: So there you go.

- 20:13Jeff Dziekan: So get out there and enjoy those.
- 20:15Don Armstrong: Yeah, and um our our announcer friend.
- 20:20Don Armstrong: Um he is at some big track.
- 20:23Don Armstrong: Was it Kansas?
- 20:24Don Armstrong: He's uh apparently he's made the big time.
- 20:26Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 20:27Don Armstrong: I don't know what he's doing.
- 20:28Don Armstrong: He's doing play by play of the public address system.
- 20:31Mike Marrs: He's up in Fort Worth.
- 20:34Mike Marrs: Uh O'Reilly.
- 20:36Mike Marrs: O'Reilly's doing a big deal up there for the week because of the races and stuff.
- 20:39Mike Marrs: So he's up there with them.
- 20:41Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 20:41Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 20:42Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 20:42Don Armstrong: Well, like I said, good.
- 20:43Don Armstrong: He's uh hit the big time.
- 20:45Don Armstrong: Good stuff.
- 20:46Don Armstrong: All right.
- 20:46Don Armstrong: Uh time now for this week in auto history, Mr.
- 20:49Don Armstrong: Mars.
- 20:50Jeff Dziekan: You got this, Jeff?
- 20:52Jeff Dziekan: I'm gonna find it here.
- 20:53Jeff Dziekan: Uh auto history.
- 20:55Don Armstrong: We got it.
- 20:55Don Armstrong: Go ahead, Mike.
- 20:56Mike Marrs: Go ahead, go ahead.
- 20:57Mike Marrs: All right, we're gonna start the week on April the 20th in 1902.
- 21:01Mike Marrs: Now, if you remember, cars were still using hand cranks then, and they were kind of causing problems, they were considered dangerous.
- 21:09Mike Marrs: Obviously, they were physically demanding, so they needed something else.
- 21:12Mike Marrs: And so Charles Kittering was actually working on developing an electric starter for the cars because Brian Carter of Carter Car Company actually died because of the injuries he got while using a hand crank.
- 21:26Mike Marrs: So that kind of pushed things on through.
- 21:28Mike Marrs: And he actually ended up creating Gilco, and Cadillac was one of the first companies to utilize his electric starter that he was developing because Cadillac engineers could not figure out how to make it work.
- 21:40Mike Marrs: They tried, they couldn't.
- 21:41Mike Marrs: So uh Leland came over to Mr.
- 21:44Mike Marrs: Ketering Kettering and got him to modify it and make their system work.
- 21:49Mike Marrs: Now we're gonna go to April the twenty second, nineteen seventy.
- 21:52Mike Marrs: Now, this was Mr.
- 21:53Don Armstrong: Morris, I'm sorry to interrupt you, but we can't find all of your uh video.
- 21:57Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 21:57Don Armstrong: So you're gonna have to find it for us.
- 22:01Don Armstrong: We thought that we had it, but we don't have it.
- 22:04Mike Marrs: I'm going to tell you right now, it is no longer with us.
- 22:07Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 22:07Don Armstrong: Well, good.
- 22:08Don Armstrong: That's why we couldn't find it.
- 22:09Don Armstrong: Continue on, sir.
- 22:10Don Armstrong: Continue on.
- 22:11Mike Marrs: So the um Earth Day.
- 22:15Mike Marrs: Earth Day, 1970.
- 22:16Mike Marrs: Now, this is the first Earth Day.
- 22:18Mike Marrs: Now, this is really a turning point for the auto industry because supposedly public concern over pollution pushed the lawmakers towards stricter emission standards.
- 22:28Mike Marrs: Now, this is what came up with the EPA, the Clean Air Act.
- 22:32Mike Marrs: You got catalytic converters, cleaner engines.
- 22:34Mike Marrs: Again, it was the lawmakers enacting this on behalf of the American public, much like they did for the EV cars, killed off the muscle cars and changed things forever inside the automotive world.
- 22:46Mike Marrs: April the 24th, 1962 was the first mass-produced turbocharged car in the U.S.
- 22:53Mike Marrs: Strangely, you know, this was Oldsmobile did this with their jet fire.
- 22:57Mike Marrs: And it's based on the F-85 model, and it came out with a turbocharged V8.
- 23:02Mike Marrs: Now, this was a 215 V8.
- 23:04Mike Marrs: Now, this is an aluminum V8 engine.
- 23:06Mike Marrs: And it was a pretty good engine.
- 23:08Mike Marrs: I had one that was naturally aspirated, ran fine until it got hot.
- 23:12Mike Marrs: Then aluminum didn't like all that.
- 23:14Mike Marrs: But it worked really well enough to kind of lead to some of the technology that we use currently in the industry.
- 23:20Mike Marrs: And then April the 25th, 1927 was when Volvo was officially founded in Sweden.
- 23:26Mike Marrs: Now the idea was to emphasize safety and durability that would dwork on the roads that were in Sweden at the time.
- 23:33Mike Marrs: They were pretty rough, apparently.
- 23:34Mike Marrs: The first car, the OV4, came off the assembly line, and 280 cars were built that first year.
- 23:41Mike Marrs: Now, Volvo would go ahead and become very innovative with safety features, you know, like the three-point seat belt.
- 23:47Mike Marrs: Now, this is something they famously made available to all manufacturers for no charge.
- 23:52Mike Marrs: Just here.
- 23:53Mike Marrs: We developed this.
- 23:54Mike Marrs: Now everybody can use it for the safety.
- 23:58Mike Marrs: Then in uh April the 19th, 1954, Mercedes rolls out the 300SL Gullwing.
- 24:06Mike Marrs: Now, this is a very iconic vehicle for uh Mercedes bands.
- 24:10Mike Marrs: It was based on some of the race cars at the time, and what really makes it stand out is the distinctive Gullwing doors.
- 24:16Mike Marrs: It had a lot of advanced engineering in it, featuring fuel injection, which was very rare at the time.
- 24:21Mike Marrs: Made it very had a remarkable performance.
- 24:25Mike Marrs: You know, it would do 162 miles per hour back in 1954.
- 24:29Mike Marrs: Now, this is uh it became a very big symbol of their post-war innovation and luxury, and to the point that instead of introducing the car in Frankfurt or Geneva like they normally do because it's Mercedes-Benz, they actually rolled the car out at the New York International Car Show instead, because they were trying to make that worldwide application real quick.
- 24:51Mike Marrs: Moving on to April the 29th, 1930, the first modern car radio was demonstrated.
- 24:57Mike Marrs: Now, there was a lot of different things going on, a lot of people were developing things that were working, but to become commercially viable, it was Motorola, which at the time was Galvin Manufacturing, that actually came out with one.
- 25:08Mike Marrs: It was definitely considered a luxury feature, mainly because it was about the third of the price of a new car at the time.
- 25:14Mike Marrs: It was$130, and you could buy a new car for four or five, six hundred dollars.
- 25:19Mike Marrs: So it transformed driving because they got it to the point where they were basically making mobile entertainment hubs that we use today.
- 25:28Mike Marrs: You know, everybody just you don't have a car without having some sort of audio system in it.
- 25:33Mike Marrs: And uh Motorola itself blends motor and Victrola, and that became the marriage of the automobiles.
- 25:38Mike Marrs: And I really found it interesting that I found the reference to Blaopunk, Blaopunk Audio, 1952.
- 25:45Mike Marrs: They were putting stuff into cars.
- 25:46Mike Marrs: So they've been around a lot longer than I thought.
- 25:48Don Armstrong: You know, I uh actually had a uh bought a Blaopunk radio for one of my cars in years past.
- 25:55Don Armstrong: It was pretty good.
- 25:56Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, nice stuff.
- 25:57Mike Marrs: Anyway, that's some of the things we found in automotive history this week that we thought were rather interesting.
- 26:02Don Armstrong: A Florida Bugatti dealership filed for lawsuit uh alleging Bugatti of the Americas wrongfully canceled its right to perform warranty work in retaliation for requesting higher labor reimbursement rates.
- 26:14Don Armstrong: Lawsuit also claims breach of dealer agreement, discriminatory vehicle allocation, and illegal direct-to-customer sales.
- 26:24Don Armstrong: Bugatti, Miami, said it was retaliated against for requesting an increase in its labor warranty rate.
- 26:30Don Armstrong: Oh, wait for you, wait for you hear this.
- 26:32Don Armstrong: According to the complaint, Bugatti, Miami asked in September of 24 for an increase in its warranty parts reimbursement rate from 100.49 percent to 160 percent.
- 26:42Don Armstrong: That request was approved.
- 26:44Don Armstrong: Then in June of 2025, the store asked for a hike in its labor reimbursement rate to$1,350 per hour.
- 26:52Don Armstrong: Negotiation led to an agreement to raise its hourly rate to$1,100 from July through December in 2025, then up again to$1350 as of January 1st.
- 27:01Don Armstrong: But in February, Bugatti said it would no longer authorize the store to do warranty work because of its excessive labor and parts markup.
- 27:08Don Armstrong: You think but wait a minute.
- 27:11Don Armstrong: How much do the cars go for?
- 27:12Don Armstrong: Like four million dollars?
- 27:16Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 27:16Don Armstrong: So you can get a stripper for about$1.4 million.
- 27:19Don Armstrong: A stripper car.
- 27:20Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:23Don Armstrong: Stellantis is launching a line of accessories designed for those on four legs rather than four wheels.
- 27:29Don Armstrong: Mopar, the automaker's parts and service division, calls its newest items available for purchase online and through dealerships Mopar.
- 27:38Don Armstrong: So look for that online.
- 27:44Jeff Dziekan: I want that deal.
- 27:45Don Armstrong: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:47Don Armstrong: Uh Stillana's, by the way, cited data saying 78% of U.S.
- 27:51Don Armstrong: pet owners travel with their pets.
- 27:53Don Armstrong: And that annual spending on pet items now tops$150 billion, and we want a piece of that.
