- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here it is Tuesday.
- 0:16It's the second day of spring. It's the 2nd of September and I
- 0:20hope you're doing well. This is a bit of a special date
- 0:23for myself. This is the day 25 years ago and
- 0:28I got married to this wonderful woman named Avon.
- 0:31Here we are 25 years later. We're just warming up.
- 0:35There's so much more to do and see and experience together.
- 0:37So happy silver wedding anniversary to us.
- 0:41Boy, I remember my parents having their silver wedding
- 0:44anniversary. They seem properly grown up.
- 0:47I guess that means I'm meant to be properly grown up.
- 0:49I don't know whether you have these moments.
- 0:50We think is, is this me as an adult?
- 0:54Is this what it feels like to be properly adult?
- 0:56I thought it'd feel different. Anyway, it is what it is.
- 1:00Here we are. We only get one crack at this
- 1:02life, so let's keep doing it together.
- 1:04And you did not. I was going to say dial in this
- 1:07morning, and that's a little old, isn't it?
- 1:09You did not tap on play to hear about me and my life.
- 1:12You tapped on play to hear more about the miraculous things
- 1:16going on as the church is built and the Holy Spirit is doing His
- 1:21work. Amazing and I will apologise for
- 1:25my nasally voice. This is winter's last hurrah.
- 1:29Gave me some germs. My whole family was sick.
- 1:31And finally I'm the last one to acquiesce and and be under the
- 1:36the weather. But I will do my best and you
- 1:38will forgive my little bit of nasaliness.
- 1:41Let us keep on going with the story as we reading together
- 1:45Acts chapter 12. About that time, King Herod
- 1:59Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church.
- 2:03He had the apostle James, John's brother, killed with a sword.
- 2:08When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he
- 2:12also arrested Peter. This took place during the
- 2:15Passover celebration. Then he imprisoned him, placing
- 2:19him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
- 2:23Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the
- 2:26Passover, but while Peter was in prison the church prayed very
- 2:31earnestly for him. The night before Peter was to be
- 2:35placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between
- 2:39two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison
- 2:43gate. Suddenly there was a bright
- 2:45light in the cell, and an Angel of the Lord stood before Peter.
- 2:50The Angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said quick get
- 2:55up and the chains fell off his wrists.
- 2:58Then the Angel told him get dressed and put on your sandals
- 3:03and he did. Now put on your coat and follow
- 3:05me. The Angel ordered.
- 3:08So Peter left the cell following the Angel, but all the time he
- 3:12thought it was a vision. He didn't realise it was
- 3:14actually happening. They passed the 1st and 2nd
- 3:17guide posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city and
- 3:21this opened for them all by itself.
- 3:23So they passed through and started walking down the street
- 3:27and then the Angel suddenly left him.
- 3:30Peter finally came to his senses.
- 3:32It's really true, he said. The Lord has sent his Angel and
- 3:36saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders had
- 3:39planned to do with me. When he realised this, he went
- 3:43to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were
- 3:47gathered for prayer. He knocked at the door in the
- 3:50gate and a servant girl named Rhoda came to open it.
- 3:53When she recognised Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that
- 3:57instead of opening the door, she ran back inside and told
- 4:00everyone. Peter is standing at the door.
- 4:04You're out of your mind, they said.
- 4:06When she insisted, they decided it must be his Angel.
- 4:11Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking.
- 4:13When they finally opened the door and saw him, I were amazed.
- 4:18He motioned for them to quiet down and told them how the Lord
- 4:21had led him out of prison. Tell James and the other
- 4:25brothers what happened, he said, and then he went to another
- 4:28place. At dawn there was a great
- 4:31commotion among the soldiers about what had happened to
- 4:33Peter. Herod Agrippa ordered a thorough
- 4:36search for him. When he couldn't be found, Herod
- 4:40interrogated the guards and sentenced them to death.
- 4:44Afterward, Herod left Judea to stay in Caesarea for a while.
- 4:50Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, so
- 4:54they sent a delegation to make peace with him because their
- 4:57cities were dependent upon Herod's country for food.
- 5:01The delegates won the support of Blastus, Herod's personal
- 5:04assistant, and an appointment with Herod was granted.
- 5:08When the day arrived, Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his
- 5:13throne and made a speech to them.
- 5:16The people gave him a great ovation, shouting It's the voice
- 5:20of a God, not a man. Instantly, an Angel of the Lord
- 5:25struck Herod with a sickness because he accepted the people's
- 5:28worship instead of giving the glory to God.
- 5:31So he was consumed with worms and died.
- 5:37Meanwhile, the word of God continued to spread, and there
- 5:40were many new believers. When Barnabas and Saul had
- 5:43finished their mission to Jerusalem, they returned, taking
- 5:47John Mark with them. Our Lord, we read these
- 6:00wonderful stories of you stepping in to save your people
- 6:05and to build your church. Our Lord, we are amazed that
- 6:11you, our mighty God, the Ruler of all creation, continues to
- 6:17choose to interest yourself and engage yourself intimately in
- 6:21our lives, even to the point that you would hear us now as we
- 6:26pray to you. We love you, our heavenly
- 6:30Father, our mighty King, our glorious God, and we worship
- 6:35you. We worship you alone, and we're
- 6:40grateful for all that you've done for us, for sending us
- 6:44Jesus to save us, and for sending us your Spirit to dwell
- 6:49in US and help us to know you better.
- 6:53So we offer ourselves to you today once again, fresh as a
- 6:57living sacrifice, ready for our lives to be in service of you
- 7:01and your will. So lead us, use us, and hold us
- 7:06ever close. We love you and we pray this all
- 7:10in the name of Jesus. Amen.
