- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm excited about today, scrats. I like your putting sweatshirt.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It's big T shirt like a sweatshirt foul territory shop
- 0:14Speaker 1: dot com. I am going to promo as hard for
- 0:16Speaker 1: the first minute of the show. It's a big day,
- 0:19Speaker 1: not one, not two, but three new shows and one.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Is all news to me. I just found out right now.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Well, that's what we're here for. We do you want
- 0:32Speaker 3: to read these? Read the screen? And I love this
- 0:34Speaker 3: graphic always?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Which are I starting with Bluebird Territory?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah? And what is that?
- 0:39Speaker 2: That's the c N Tower with the map.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Do you like these logos really?
- 0:43Speaker 2: So you can have a beer and watch ball? That's right,
- 0:47Speaker 2: you got an injury territory one I'm not really a
- 0:49Speaker 2: big fan of, just because you're not supposed touch crutches
- 0:51Speaker 2: and I didn't want to see the never wanted to
- 0:53Speaker 2: go in the training room. So it's not nothing against will,
- 0:56Speaker 2: but it's just more about the fact that, like you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: there's a band aids, red crosses and crutches or things
- 1:01Speaker 2: you never wanted to see.
- 1:03Speaker 3: It's a beautiful logo.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and the Tommy John and the Jay I forgot.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I barely can see that you like away. Yeah, but yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but everyone has one of those. No, every pitcher has
- 1:13Speaker 2: one of those, so they all know what it is.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I never have that, so I don't know what it is.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm trying to connect with them. Kevin Pillar, Ricky Romero
- 1:18Speaker 1: both former Blue Jays, very popular. And Mitch mannon who
- 1:22Speaker 1: covers the team for the athletic episode one out now
- 1:27Speaker 1: KP said, new adventure with some cool dudes. That's gonna
- 1:30Speaker 1: be really good. You get the position player and pitcher perspective.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Plus Mitch is following the team every day. Love it Brewers,
- 1:38Speaker 1: Corey Canabel, Mike Mustakis, Kurt Hoague.
- 1:41Speaker 3: It's a strong team. Yep, yeah, Krats. Would you like
- 1:45Speaker 3: to say hello to your new family members?
- 1:48Speaker 4: I already said hi to them on the real world Twitter. Okay,
- 1:52Speaker 4: everybody eats. Everybody eats when you're part of the family, Like,
- 1:55Speaker 4: come on in, I'm a big fella. I got lots
- 1:58Speaker 4: of love for everybody.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Boom.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And one of those names is actually our first guest
- 2:05Speaker 1: of the day, a breaking news, last minute guest because
- 2:08Speaker 1: of the rash of injuries hitting our sport. It is
- 2:17Speaker 1: Will Carroll joining us right now. He's got an awesome newsletter,
- 2:20Speaker 1: which we'll talk about, and of course we'll cover the show.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Injury Territory will great to have you on. But first
- 2:26Speaker 1: let's start with hammett bones, because they are taking over
- 2:30Speaker 1: the day spring training begins. And usually it's pitchers that
- 2:34Speaker 1: dominate the beginning of spring training, but this injury has
- 2:36Speaker 1: now popped up for Francisco, Lindor Surgery, Corbyn Carol Surgery,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and Young Jackson Holiday of the Orioles. All of them
- 2:44Speaker 1: look like they'll miss the beginning of the season. Maybe
- 2:46Speaker 1: Lindor makes it back in time.
- 2:48Speaker 5: But what do you think, Yeah, this is a terrible
- 2:52Speaker 5: run of bad luck clusters. We often see these, and
- 2:56Speaker 5: because it's all stars, because it's players that are super
- 2:59Speaker 5: fantasy relevant, it makes it seem like, oh, no, what
- 3:02Speaker 5: is going on? Is it something? It just pitches inside
- 3:05Speaker 5: and guy's not wearing a path. The hammt bone is
- 3:07Speaker 5: right here, it's right basically under the pinky, and it's
- 3:11Speaker 5: got kind of a hook on it, so it doesn't
- 3:15Speaker 5: heal well, doesn't get a lot of blood flow. That
- 3:17Speaker 5: hook never comes back on. So the easiest thing is
- 3:20Speaker 5: just to go down in there and either cut that
- 3:22Speaker 5: hook off and pull it out or take the whole
- 3:24Speaker 5: bone out. They don't love doing that whole bone removal
- 3:30Speaker 5: at this point, just because we realize now how complex
- 3:33Speaker 5: the wrist is. There's a lot of structure in there,
- 3:35Speaker 5: not just bone, but you know, cartilage and ligaments and
- 3:39Speaker 5: tendons and blood vessels and nerves, and if it's not
- 3:42Speaker 5: all right together all those little tiny structures, sometimes it
- 3:46Speaker 5: gets out of whack. And that's why these injuries are
- 3:48Speaker 5: so tough. It's not that bones don't heal, it's that
- 3:52Speaker 5: we often see a power drop. It used to be
- 3:57Speaker 5: for six weeks after why six weeks, no idea, but
- 4:01Speaker 5: for six weeks after, guys would just not be able
- 4:03Speaker 5: to hit. It was Pablo Sandoval that really epitomized this.
- 4:07Speaker 5: He had both of them knocked out, and in both
- 4:11Speaker 5: cases six weeks almost no power. Suddenly something clicks and
- 4:16Speaker 5: he's hitting the ball out of the park again. So
- 4:18Speaker 5: for Holiday, for Carol, for Lindor a little bit. His
- 4:21Speaker 5: is a little bit different in that he was a
- 4:23Speaker 5: stress reaction rather than an acute injury where he took
- 4:28Speaker 5: a pitch off it. So there is still some question
- 4:32Speaker 5: about that and we're still trying to figure out exactly
- 4:35Speaker 5: what's going on there with Carol on holiday. It's as
- 4:38Speaker 5: simple as can be, but still terrible because these could
- 4:41Speaker 5: have been prevented.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Okay, well, I'm gonna we're gonna have a little quick
- 4:45Speaker 2: not argument, but I'm gonna go against what you said. Actually,
- 4:49Speaker 2: I broke my handmate, ninety nine percent of the time,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and I have this car to prove it. You break
- 4:54Speaker 2: it on the knob of your bat swinging. It has
- 4:56Speaker 2: nothing to do with getting hit by the pitch. What
- 4:58Speaker 2: happens is it's actually you're handmaid is right here in
- 5:01Speaker 2: your hand and a little hook and they go in
- 5:03Speaker 2: and they take that hook out. But most of the
- 5:05Speaker 2: time it's from because most guys, I'm sure krats used
- 5:07Speaker 2: to have it too. You get we used to call
- 5:09Speaker 2: him a turdy. I don't know what the technical term
- 5:11Speaker 2: is for it, but you get the little blood things
- 5:14Speaker 2: built up from with the knob of your bat. So here,
- 5:17Speaker 2: if I grabbed his bat right and you put the knob,
- 5:20Speaker 2: most guys hit with their the hand off the bat
- 5:23Speaker 2: like this, and so that knob sits right where my
- 5:26Speaker 2: handmai bone is right. And so after swing after swing
- 5:29Speaker 2: after swing after swing, eventually you hit one it breaks
- 5:32Speaker 2: that little, that little hook off and it hurts like hell.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Trust me, it hurts like hell. And you know what
- 5:37Speaker 2: else says this a lot? Golfers do this a lot
- 5:40Speaker 2: because then when they hit like a root or they
- 5:42Speaker 2: hit a rock or something, it breaks that little hook off.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And when you say six weeks, yes, six weeks is
- 5:48Speaker 2: about right now. I did mine at the end of
- 5:50Speaker 2: the year, so I was in the off season, didn't matter.
- 5:53Speaker 2: But I saw David Ortiz try to play through this,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and he could. He lost a lot of his power.
- 5:57Speaker 2: But it's not because you the pain or whatever it is.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You lose it because you lose strength in your hand
- 6:02Speaker 2: because your hand is basically immobilized for three to four weeks,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and then you lose strengthen your wrists, so it takes
- 6:08Speaker 2: you a little bit of time to get that back.
- 6:10Speaker 2: So yeah, six weeks is conservative. But I tell all
- 6:13Speaker 2: these guys, will take your time. It's the beginning of
- 6:15Speaker 2: the year. Take your time, make sure you're right. If
- 6:17Speaker 2: you missed the first week of the season, it's worth
- 6:19Speaker 2: it to get the rest of the time. But yeah, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 2: it's just it's a weird je no one's ever heard of.
- 6:25Speaker 5: It's a great point because I think this does contrast
- 6:28Speaker 5: what happened between these acute injuries and what happened for
- 6:33Speaker 5: Lindor that stress reaction. Like you were saying, there are
- 6:37Speaker 5: a lot of terms for it where you get that irritation.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But now that we have the scanners that can go
- 6:43Speaker 5: in there and get the image and see, oh it's
- 6:46Speaker 5: not broken, but something's happening, it doesn't like this. You
- 6:50Speaker 5: felt that you knew something was going on there and
- 6:53Speaker 5: then it finally goes. They're catching this on thendor before
- 6:57Speaker 5: it goes. So what do we do. Do we go
- 6:59Speaker 5: in there and just take the thing out, be done
- 7:01Speaker 5: with it, make sure it doesn't happen again. Do we
- 7:05Speaker 5: change something he's doing, you know, the back handle itself.
- 7:09Speaker 5: There's the whole axe bat thing and grip changes and
- 7:13Speaker 5: things that purport to help with that. So we'll see
- 7:15Speaker 5: where it goes. But again that there are ways this
- 7:19Speaker 5: could have been prevented, including just wearing a pad over
- 7:22Speaker 5: the hand. Ajay.

- 8:25Speaker 4: Well it'll kill your show if we prevent all injuries.
- 8:28Speaker 4: But there's no such thing as preventing all injuries. Francesco
- 8:32Speaker 4: Lindor out of all these three, is a switch hitter?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Is there any chance that they search out the possibility
- 8:39Speaker 4: of maybe taking the other one out while he gets
- 8:42Speaker 4: the same one done while he gets so that he
- 8:44Speaker 4: never has this on the other side.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, that's an interesting idea, but I don't
- 8:51Speaker 5: think most doctors would consider it because it's healthy in theory,
- 8:56Speaker 5: he's been healthy this whole time. You could do that
- 9:00Speaker 5: with any player, you know, we could go in there
- 9:02Speaker 5: and replace everybody's ACL and UCL and pull both hammets
- 9:07Speaker 5: and do all that at the start of the career
- 9:09Speaker 5: and make sure they never happened. But usually doctors are very,
- 9:12Speaker 5: very reluctant to do surgeries before they're medically necessary. So
- 9:16Speaker 5: I would say no on.
- 9:17Speaker 2: This though it's a great idea, yeah, but it would
- 9:20Speaker 2: still hurt. I mean, listen, even if you switch hit
- 9:23Speaker 2: okay in a pad, the pad on here does not
- 9:27Speaker 2: help from breaking inside. Like you can wear a pad
- 9:30Speaker 2: here all day long. Yeah, but you actually do this
- 9:33Speaker 2: from swinging. I can tell you the exact swing I
- 9:34Speaker 2: did it off of one. I mean I remember I
- 9:36Speaker 2: swung and I was like, that's not right. Okay. So
- 9:40Speaker 2: but for Lindor switch hit or so he broke his
- 9:42Speaker 2: left one okay, which is his bottom one. Usually break
- 9:45Speaker 2: your bottom hand, So I would say, theoretically, did this
- 9:48Speaker 2: hitting right handed? Okay, so then to go and switch
- 9:51Speaker 2: left in and it's not the problem of the pain.
- 9:53Speaker 2: When I did mine, I could barely move my fingers.
- 9:55Speaker 2: My hand was literally stuck like this until they went in.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And it's some stuff because yes, so he like, technically,
- 10:03Speaker 2: they go, why don't he just hit left handed? Well,
- 10:05Speaker 2: if he didn't have his top hand strength, then it
- 10:07Speaker 2: still won't work. Plus he also catches left handed with
- 10:10Speaker 2: his glove, so he would have to have the feeling
- 10:13Speaker 2: in his hand. So it's not as simple as that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I mean, it sounds great on paper, like just only
- 10:17Speaker 2: hit left handed, but you still need that top end
- 10:20Speaker 2: and you still need to catch the ball as a shortstop.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You know, he's not an outfielder or someone that doesn't
- 10:24Speaker 2: get the ball every play, so it's it's not the
- 10:27Speaker 2: best thing. And then for like Corbyn Carroll and Jackson Holiday.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Jackson Holiday, they broke their right hand on the bottom
- 10:33Speaker 2: hand Corbyn Carroll's lefty, so it's a little different now
- 10:35Speaker 2: Jackson Holiday. But like I told you guys yesterday, we
- 10:38Speaker 2: talked about I couldn't throw the ball back to the
- 10:40Speaker 2: pitcher when I did. Mind, I had to have the umpire.
- 10:42Speaker 2: It hurt that. I was like, please throw it. He's like,
- 10:45Speaker 2: what's wrong with I'm like, just throw? Get to this
- 10:47Speaker 2: sitting right, So Jackson Allday playing second base, the throw
- 10:51Speaker 2: would become an issue.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, that nerve is very, very involved. The other
- 10:56Speaker 5: thing was switch hitters. It is a two handed game,
- 10:58Speaker 5: so there's there's not a place where you can kind
- 11:01Speaker 5: of hide it. There is some theory we've had more
- 11:06Speaker 5: switch hitters have this injury. So because they're doing two
- 11:09Speaker 5: different things, is there an imbalance? Is it taking different forces?
- 11:14Speaker 5: Nobody's terribly sure of this, but it's something we're getting
- 11:17Speaker 5: more of again, just because we have better scanners, and
- 11:20Speaker 5: I do want to lock in on lind'or his is
- 11:23Speaker 5: not fractured. Stress reaction is something we're hearing more and
- 11:26Speaker 5: more of because again better scanners, we're seeing these things earlier.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Can we prevent them maybe? Can we learn from them? Absolutely?
- 11:36Speaker 5: So figuring out what the best practice for that is
- 11:39Speaker 5: something that's still really being figured out.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Hey, well, let's move to some other injuries. I'm actually
- 11:46Speaker 1: going to pick a team for this next one. The
- 11:49Speaker 1: Toronto Blue Jays Anthony Santander shoulder surgery that was a
- 11:53Speaker 1: problem for him last year. It looks like he's going
- 11:55Speaker 1: to miss most of the year. Shane Bieber is a
- 11:58Speaker 1: little bit delayed, Boden Franks with surgery that'll knock him
- 12:02Speaker 1: out for the year.
- 12:03Speaker 3: So what do you think of these.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Early Blue Jays injuries on a day where yeah, unfortunately
- 12:07Speaker 1: or fortunately we launched a Blue Jay show and an
- 12:09Speaker 1: injury show.
- 12:10Speaker 3: They're all colliding.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe it's you. It's one of those things where
- 12:17Speaker 5: I think we need to take a real hard look
- 12:19Speaker 5: at this in the way the pattern went for these
- 12:22Speaker 5: three injuries, because they're three very different. You got Francis,
- 12:25Speaker 5: which is one of those where you know, unfortunately, this
- 12:28Speaker 5: is the time of year where we're going to see
- 12:29Speaker 5: a bunch of UCLs where guys had an off season
- 12:33Speaker 5: where maybe they didn't ramp upright, maybe they're they're a
- 12:35Speaker 5: little too early. Maybe that thing was on a thread
- 12:38Speaker 5: and was going to go. But now they get back
- 12:40Speaker 5: out there, get the adrenaline going, they're going for a
- 12:43Speaker 5: job and it snaps. Just unfortunate with Bieber, remember that
- 12:49Speaker 5: he was coming back from Tommy John surgery last year
- 12:51Speaker 5: when he was traded, so he went a little bit
- 12:55Speaker 5: further than they ever expected, though certainly the Jay's are
- 12:58Speaker 5: glad they had him and he was very good, so
- 13:00Speaker 5: they just kind of slowed his off season. So this
- 13:04Speaker 5: was planned. So this isn't really another injury. This is
- 13:08Speaker 5: just sort of they're saying forearm fatigued to give a
- 13:11Speaker 5: reason for why this is a late ramp. On the
- 13:13Speaker 5: other hand, Santander ran into a wall last year and
- 13:17Speaker 5: it was a padded wall. It was just one of
- 13:19Speaker 5: those things that happens in baseball. You can't take a
- 13:22Speaker 5: look at the Blue Jays medical staff and go, this
- 13:24Speaker 5: one's on you. But the days and the dollars are
- 13:26Speaker 5: going to count, not just last year, but now after
- 13:29Speaker 5: having the surgery. After this labor became really really problematic
- 13:34Speaker 5: for him and symptomatic and painful. They've got to go
- 13:37Speaker 5: in there and repair it. And this was an injury
- 13:40Speaker 5: that ten years ago we didn't do well with. If
- 13:43Speaker 5: you can remember Matt Kemp, it took him years after
- 13:46Speaker 5: his surgery. Now another one, Cody Bellinger. He struggled the
- 13:50Speaker 5: year after but has been very very solid since. Even
- 13:53Speaker 5: pitchers that have the surgery, doctor Dio Latrosh the Dodger
- 13:57Speaker 5: surgeon kind of changed the way the surgery was done,
- 14:00Speaker 5: different nodding, different anchors that are put in, and just
- 14:04Speaker 5: those different techniques have made the return a lot better,
- 14:08Speaker 5: a lot quicker. So Santander should have a good chance
- 14:12Speaker 5: of coming back, but that doesn't not help the Jays
- 14:14Speaker 5: in twenty twenty six.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Is that why it's happening now, because they were like,
- 14:19Speaker 4: we're going to rehab the absolute crap out of it,
- 14:22Speaker 4: and Santander just could not get to the point where
- 14:26Speaker 4: the rehab was enough because like, is it an injury
- 14:29Speaker 4: that's more extensive rehab because of the fear that you'll
- 14:33Speaker 4: never get quite get back with the surgery.
- 14:38Speaker 5: No great question, though, Eric. The answer is they rehab
- 14:41Speaker 5: the heck out of it because they try to avoid surgery.
- 14:44Speaker 5: And this is always the answer. Logan Evans up in
- 14:49Speaker 5: Seattle was rehabbing trying to avoid Tommy John surgery. Couldn't
- 14:54Speaker 5: had to have it and had it in late January,
- 14:56Speaker 5: and people are like, well, why didn't you just have it?
- 14:59Speaker 5: Because surgery hard, Even as automatic as something like Tommy
- 15:03Speaker 5: John surgery is, it's still only I think the last
- 15:06Speaker 5: study was eighty three percent of pictures come back from it.
- 15:09Speaker 5: What if you're one of the others seventeen? What if
- 15:12Speaker 5: something goes wrong? Which happens. So you always try to
- 15:17Speaker 5: avoid injuries always, no matter what. For Santander, he rehabed
- 15:22Speaker 5: the heck of it, hoping that he was going to
- 15:23Speaker 5: be able to come back from it. He was out
- 15:26Speaker 5: pretty much the entire second half, missed the playoffs when
- 15:28Speaker 5: they really could have used him, but were pretty darn
- 15:31Speaker 5: good without him. This is one where they tried. They tried,
- 15:35Speaker 5: and once he dialed it back up, it broke down.
- 15:38Speaker 5: That laborhm is just that it's that tiny piece of
- 15:40Speaker 5: cartilage inside the Glenoyd fossa there in the shoulder, and
- 15:45Speaker 5: when it's torn and becomes symptomatic, it's just tough. It's
- 15:49Speaker 5: one of the most painful things you'll ever have. That's
- 15:51Speaker 5: one I could show you the scar on for me.
- 15:54Speaker 5: And when Frank Jerones tried to put mine back together.
- 15:58Speaker 5: There are three times he did that operation should me
- 16:00Speaker 5: Oral Herchcheiser and one other college pitcher, and then he
- 16:03Speaker 5: stopped doing it because it didn't work. How do you
- 16:06Speaker 5: think that makes me an oral feel?
- 16:09Speaker 4: That's not a sentence that I really want to keep repeating.
- 16:12Speaker 4: So I'm going to go to Bouden Francis. Bout in
- 16:15Speaker 4: Francis the UCL. One of the things you said, and
- 16:17Speaker 4: this isn't necessarily about boud In Francis, but it's about
- 16:21Speaker 4: what's the percentage of UCL injuries from February March compared
- 16:27Speaker 4: to any other two months during the season. Is that
- 16:31Speaker 4: percentage absolutely that much higher? And if we have asked
- 16:36Speaker 4: for low hanging fruit with the UCL injuries that we're
- 16:39Speaker 4: always trying to get, how.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Can we fix that?
- 16:42Speaker 4: Doesn't that feel like if that's a twenty five percent
- 16:44Speaker 4: of them, Man, if we can just cut that in half,
- 16:47Speaker 4: you're cutting out so many UCL or Tommy John surgeries.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Yeah, you're exactly right. It was about forty percent. We
- 16:56Speaker 5: would have half the injuries before I think it was
- 17:00Speaker 5: May first. And we see this pattern over and over.
- 17:03Speaker 5: The NFL used to be that fifty percent of their
- 17:05Speaker 5: injuries happened before week two of their season, and that's
- 17:09Speaker 5: changed a little bit with changes they've made to contact
- 17:13Speaker 5: in camp, but it is the same thing. In baseball.
- 17:15Speaker 5: We've seen a reduction of this because we understand ramps now,
- 17:19Speaker 5: Guys used to shut down and you would start throwing
- 17:24Speaker 5: again in late December early January and work your way
- 17:28Speaker 5: back up, and even spring training is still structured that way.
- 17:31Speaker 5: And if you'd go out there for a couple of
- 17:32Speaker 5: innings and three innings and four innings and five innings
- 17:35Speaker 5: and build your way back up, we understand a lot
- 17:38Speaker 5: more of that right now, and you can very scientifically
- 17:43Speaker 5: build these ramps and keep your workload in that green zone.
- 17:46Speaker 5: So we are seeing a reduction in this. The problem
- 17:49Speaker 5: is we're seeing those not just go away, but stretch out,
- 17:52Speaker 5: and we're seeing more into June, July, and August.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Well, we're talking about injuries before the season even start,
- 18:00Speaker 2: really before the first day of spring training. And Chris
- 18:02Speaker 2: Bryant is already on the sixty day IL because of
- 18:05Speaker 2: a lower what is it, lower lumbar?
- 18:08Speaker 3: What on?
- 18:09Speaker 2: Lower lombard degenerative disc disease? Yeah, can you explain what
- 18:14Speaker 2: the heck that is? And he's gonna miss fifty seven
- 18:17Speaker 2: games already. He only played what in eleven last year?
- 18:21Speaker 2: So I mean, can he come back from this because
- 18:23Speaker 2: he still has like two or three more years left
- 18:26Speaker 2: on this massive deal he signed.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Yeah. I said last year that I didn't think we'd
- 18:31Speaker 5: ever see Chris Bryant play again. I'll stand by that
- 18:34Speaker 5: we may see a game or two here, but he
- 18:36Speaker 5: has a degenerative disc in his back. He's going to
- 18:38Speaker 5: need some level of surgery at some point. He's already
- 18:42Speaker 5: had it. If you can think another Denver athlete, I
- 18:46Speaker 5: guess he didn't think that way. It was Peyton Manning
- 18:48Speaker 5: who had two surgeries on his neck before he had
- 18:52Speaker 5: to have a fusion, was able to come back win
- 18:55Speaker 5: a Super Bowl after that. So you can't come back
- 18:58Speaker 5: from it. But it's difficult cult baseball players with all
- 19:01Speaker 5: the torsion. I can't think of a player that's had
- 19:05Speaker 5: a fusion that it didn't in their career. Prince Fielder
- 19:10Speaker 5: obviously comes to mind. His was in his neck, but
- 19:13Speaker 5: when those discs in between the vertebrae go, bad things happen.
- 19:18Speaker 5: There are too many nerves in there, there are too
- 19:20Speaker 5: many problems. The fact is he just can't twist. And
- 19:22Speaker 5: if you can't twist, you certainly can't hit a baseball,
- 19:26Speaker 5: let alone throw a baseball.
- 19:28Speaker 4: A lot of the rhetoric coming out of Colorado is
- 19:30Speaker 4: guys don't recuperate. Is this an injury that was happening
- 19:35Speaker 4: and now like oh, he's in Colorado, he's always in
- 19:38Speaker 4: the higher elevation. It's you know, it led to a
- 19:42Speaker 4: faster decline or a faster like impact of this injury.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Or is that not? Is that all?
- 19:49Speaker 4: Is that all fake and just something people say?
- 19:53Speaker 5: No, I think certainly there is a high altitude effect.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Not necessarily this because this is anaerobic. It's not like
- 20:00Speaker 5: his spine is breathing. I assume he gets a decent
- 20:04Speaker 5: amount of oxygen and he's breathing in and out. The
- 20:08Speaker 5: disc is one where it's structural. We often hear, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 5: it's not structural. What is structure? And when it comes
- 20:15Speaker 5: to it, that disk is damaged, it's herniated, it's hardening,
- 20:21Speaker 5: it's calcifying. Those nerves that go through there are being pinched.
- 20:27Speaker 5: So he's having numbness, probably pain down his leg. A
- 20:30Speaker 5: lot of people out there have probably experienced some sort
- 20:33Speaker 5: of sciatica pain. As you get older, your body basically calcilfies,
- 20:39Speaker 5: which is one of the things we're learning with all
- 20:40Speaker 5: this anti aging research that's going on right now and biohacking.
- 20:45Speaker 5: But for this, there's not really a whole lot they
- 20:47Speaker 5: can do. You know, you put in a cage you
- 20:51Speaker 5: fuse those vertebrae together. We've seen some advances. There was
- 20:58Speaker 5: attempts to trans plant discs. There's some external discs that
- 21:04Speaker 5: they can put in there, but we haven't had a
- 21:06Speaker 5: lot of success from it. And again it comes down
- 21:08Speaker 5: to can he twist and when he twists, what sort
- 21:12Speaker 5: of pain is he going through? At his age, he's
- 21:15Speaker 5: looking at very extensive back surgery. Again, it's a very
- 21:19Speaker 5: very common injury. It's just devastating for the skills of baseball.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Okay, well that was my question. Is I just recently
- 21:27Speaker 2: had a friend that had back surgery and felt better,
- 21:30Speaker 2: like right away, maybe had numbness in their leg. Boom
- 21:33Speaker 2: had back surgery and they're gonna I mean, they don't
- 21:35Speaker 2: play baseball, but they're just a normal person and they're
- 21:38Speaker 2: going to be back to normal, they said in four
- 21:40Speaker 2: to six weeks. Is that not something that Chris Bryant
- 21:44Speaker 2: could do or he just needs something that's so much
- 21:47Speaker 2: more in depth that it would not it wouldn't work.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Now it comes down to the very specific skills of baseball.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I mean, you understand better than most what kind of
- 21:58Speaker 5: forces go into a swing. So if you're not able
- 22:01Speaker 5: to twist if you're putting that much pressure on it.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Even if they go in there and fuse those vertebrates together,
- 22:08Speaker 5: now suddenly his spine doesn't move the same way. His
- 22:13Speaker 5: vertebrate don't have that same cushion they're locked back in.
- 22:17Speaker 5: It just doesn't turn. Could he still hit? Maybe? But
- 22:22Speaker 5: again I've got an absolute blank on players that have
- 22:26Speaker 5: had that and come back from it. If you're a
- 22:28Speaker 5: regular guy, can you go back to work? Yep? But
- 22:33Speaker 5: can you go back and play baseball? The simple answer
- 22:36Speaker 5: is no. The real answer is probably not.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Let's see, hey, sometimes we do a little game on
- 22:45Speaker 1: Foul Territory called role play.
- 22:47Speaker 3: It's not what you think.
- 22:49Speaker 1: We're just picking up our phones and we're talking as
- 22:51Speaker 1: if we're somebody in baseball. But if you'd like that
- 22:54Speaker 1: phone to be a little bit cheaper for making phone calls,
- 22:58Speaker 1: who should you call?
- 22:59Speaker 3: Krats?

- 23:44Speaker 1: well a clever tweet this morning. It's again unfortunate when
- 23:48Speaker 1: you're talking injuries. But when we threw out there that
- 23:51Speaker 1: we were launching three new shows, someone replied to the
- 23:54Speaker 1: Injury Territory one and said, Oh, I didn't realize you
- 23:57Speaker 1: guys rebranded Hammer Territory, which is Brave show.
- 24:01Speaker 3: They went through it last year. I said, well played.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I mean it sucks, but well played, and they're already
- 24:06Speaker 1: going through it this year. So I wanted to get
- 24:07Speaker 1: your thoughts on the three names that I think are
- 24:09Speaker 1: standing out for them too. Very recently, even this morning,
- 24:12Speaker 1: Walt Weiss, new Brave's manager, mentioned how the situation for
- 24:15Speaker 1: Jojanmenez is very complex. He's already on the sixty dail.
- 24:19Speaker 1: He used to be a valuable part of the bullpen.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Spencer Schwellenbach very valuable part of the rotation. Dave O'Brien,
- 24:25Speaker 1: who covered the team up until this year, was working
- 24:28Speaker 1: for the Athletic covering the team and said, you know,
- 24:30Speaker 1: there was a Bilo uptick for Schwellenbach. He was speculating
- 24:33Speaker 1: that's soon after that fractures. Z elbow now has this
- 24:36Speaker 1: issue that might lead to bones pur surgery. And then
- 24:38Speaker 1: lastly we can finish with Hassan Kim slipping on ice.
- 24:42Speaker 1: It's kind of like slipped on ice, but it's pretty
- 24:44Speaker 1: serious because he's going to miss serious time for them too.
- 24:47Speaker 1: So your thoughts on those three.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Yeah, with Kim, it's unfortunate. You know, these sorts of
- 24:53Speaker 5: things happened. These people, we forget they're human and things happen.
- 24:57Speaker 5: You know, we'll laugh about you things. Who was it
- 25:01Speaker 5: Clint Barmas that fell down the stairs with a deer
- 25:04Speaker 5: or something. There's always those those quirky injuries that we
- 25:07Speaker 5: can talk about and fill my column with laughter. But
- 25:11Speaker 5: you know, people do fall. People, what was Jonathan Lucroy
- 25:15Speaker 5: dropped a suitcase on his hand? Things like that. Slipping
- 25:20Speaker 5: on ice is just slipping on ice. It's unfortunate. Put
- 25:24Speaker 5: that ankle back together and hope that again he has
- 25:26Speaker 5: his skills with all that later emotion that he needs, which.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Well, back hold up real quick. Well, just because I
- 25:32Speaker 1: think I think the ankle was last year. I'm just
- 25:35Speaker 1: and I blitched you with this one, so sorry, but
- 25:37Speaker 1: I think it was. I have your surgery to repair
- 25:40Speaker 1: torn tendon right middle finger, right, I think.
- 25:43Speaker 5: That you.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Got a lot of injuries slow, and so I'm throwing it.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, Sorry, I was thinking about the ankle from
- 25:51Speaker 5: last year.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I forgot me.
- 25:52Speaker 5: It was the hand. My bad. But it's a tendant,
- 25:55Speaker 5: so again you got to worry about the grip. You
- 25:57Speaker 5: gotta be able to put that back together. And we
- 25:59Speaker 5: do see that. It's just unfortunate how it happened for schwampact.
- 26:03Speaker 5: With the bone and the bone spurs. This is a
- 26:06Speaker 5: difficult one to understand because bone spurs are really simple.
- 26:11Speaker 5: We've all played operation. If you've got a bone chip,
- 26:15Speaker 5: it's come off the bone. With a bone spur, it's
- 26:18Speaker 5: just a little piece of bone, kind of like a
- 26:19Speaker 5: blister that's come off. But what's it touching? Is it
- 26:22Speaker 5: touching the ucl is it touching the owner nerve, is
- 26:24Speaker 5: it touching one of the other things, and is it
- 26:28Speaker 5: hurting something. There was a whole debate in the orthopaedic
- 26:31Speaker 5: sur surgery community about whether you took bone spurs off
- 26:35Speaker 5: where they a reaction of the body that were telling
- 26:39Speaker 5: us something was going on with the UCL We still
- 26:41Speaker 5: don't know a really good answer to that. But if
- 26:44Speaker 5: the bone spurs out there poking a nerve, you've got
- 26:46Speaker 5: to take it out. But it's probably the body's signal
- 26:51Speaker 5: telling you something's going on. With Jimenez and a lot
- 26:54Speaker 5: of these players with the sixty day, these are nones.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Most of these roster moves, honestly, and you're getting a
- 27:04Speaker 5: guy off so you can bring somebody else onto the
- 27:06Speaker 5: forty man, get somebody, get another NRI on the roster.
- 27:10Speaker 5: These were knowns coming in that they weren't going to
- 27:13Speaker 5: be back until long time. Corp with Burns we know
- 27:16Speaker 5: isn't gonna be back until midway through the season. There's
- 27:20Speaker 5: a number of other guys on Tommy Johns who they're
- 27:24Speaker 5: gonna go to the sixty. So that's one of those
- 27:27Speaker 5: situations where I'm not sure it's quite as meaningful. It's
- 27:32Speaker 5: just one of those roster things.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Hey, before we get to Burns there, I see him
- 27:36Speaker 1: on the screen, just on de Menez, just to provide
- 27:38Speaker 1: context for that one and the reason I'm asking about it.
- 27:40Speaker 1: He's been out of baseball for a while now. So
- 27:42Speaker 1: after twenty twenty four left knee surgery, ended up missing
- 27:46Speaker 1: all of last year, and he said it happened to
- 27:50Speaker 1: this issue with his knee during the season in twenty four.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Didn't realize until after went for further evaluation in November.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Right then that spills into twenty twenty five misses the
- 27:59Speaker 1: whole year, shows up to camp. They calling this one
- 28:02Speaker 1: for the sixty dayil left articular cartilage injury. So I'm
- 28:06Speaker 1: guessing that's still related to the need. And that's when
- 28:09Speaker 1: wile White said it's very complex and it almost seemed
- 28:12Speaker 1: like he could miss the whole season again.
- 28:14Speaker 3: And that's where brays Frans, I don't know.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I think that's because they expected much, but they're like,
- 28:17Speaker 1: damn no, Joe Hamannz for two years.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Yeah, because that degeneration. You think about how much pressure
- 28:24Speaker 5: you're putting on your knees, either knee. The first knee
- 28:28Speaker 5: surgery was to clean it out try to get everything going,
- 28:30Speaker 5: but that articular cartilage, which is basically a covering over
- 28:34Speaker 5: the bone behind the knee cap. As they come together,
- 28:38Speaker 5: it rolls, and if that cartilage is torn or rough
- 28:42Speaker 5: or gone, you start getting bone on bone. That gets
- 28:45Speaker 5: really bad. If the meniscus is torn, if he's had
- 28:48Speaker 5: a previous issue with that, I don't know in this
- 28:51Speaker 5: specific case, but it used to be they just pull
- 28:53Speaker 5: that meniscus out and you'd move on with life. But
- 28:57Speaker 5: we realized that probably wasn't the best ideas that, you know,
- 29:00Speaker 5: they take out as little as possible, or they try
- 29:02Speaker 5: to stitch it back together, which has about a fifty
- 29:04Speaker 5: percent rate. We've seen that Mason Wynn coming back from
- 29:08Speaker 5: a very minor menace act. To me, a lot of
- 29:10Speaker 5: people were saying, you know, why is he coming back
- 29:12Speaker 5: in six months from this because there was an off season.
- 29:16Speaker 5: So with Hamenez, articular cartilage is tough, and honestly, the
- 29:21Speaker 5: long term answer is going to be knee replacement, and
- 29:24Speaker 5: we see that a lot. Lindsay Vaughn, who's obviously been
- 29:27Speaker 5: in the news a lot for Hernie, had a partial
- 29:30Speaker 5: knee replacement on one knee when she retired, and that
- 29:35Speaker 5: would be a very similar solution for someone with the
- 29:38Speaker 5: condition that Hamanas has.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Hi last one for me, Josh Hater, the lead closer
- 29:44Speaker 4: for the Astros, once he went out last year, they
- 29:47Speaker 4: kind of faltered at the end. Not all his fault
- 29:49Speaker 4: because he wasn't there, but you lose a big piece.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Now it's saying he is bicep Inflammation's that bicep ten
- 29:57Speaker 4: to nightis are we talking about actually in Scott Braun's
- 30:01Speaker 4: biceps or are we talking about like the connected part
- 30:04Speaker 4: closer to the shoulder.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Yeah, we're likely. We haven't had confirmation. Been trying to
- 30:11Speaker 5: lock this down after initially seeing that he was having
- 30:14Speaker 5: this problem. A lot of people think bicep. They think,
- 30:17Speaker 5: you know, the big muscles like you and aj have,
- 30:20Speaker 5: But it's often in the shoulder. The bicep does attach
- 30:23Speaker 5: the two muscles of the bicapp hence the name, come
- 30:26Speaker 5: up into the shoulder. Same with the pector alis major.
- 30:28Speaker 5: We think of a pack being chessed, but it also
- 30:31Speaker 5: comes up and attaches in a very similar place. They
- 30:33Speaker 5: actually cross. So if you've got an inflammation up there,
- 30:36Speaker 5: is this an arm injury or is this a shoulder injury?
- 30:40Speaker 5: I would argue it's more a shoulder injury. He had
- 30:42Speaker 5: that left shoulder strain in the back, So is he offloading,
- 30:46Speaker 5: has he changed his mechanics. There's a lot of different
- 30:48Speaker 5: ways that this could happen, but the fact that this
- 30:50Speaker 5: is occurring at the point where he should be well
- 30:53Speaker 5: up in his ramp guys come into camp very easily.
- 30:57Speaker 5: We know he's been throwing since at least January, so
- 31:01Speaker 5: the fact that he's getting inflammation this early indicates those
- 31:04Speaker 5: forces still aren't balanced, that something is going on at
- 31:07Speaker 5: his shoulder can't handle and what's the underlying cause for that. Well,
- 31:11Speaker 5: they're gonna have a ton of data. They're gonna have
- 31:13Speaker 5: the bottom mechanical data in game and out of game.
- 31:15Speaker 5: The astros are going to have their hands on him.
- 31:17Speaker 5: They're gonna have however many scans he's had, which is
- 31:20Speaker 5: probably a lot, and that's a very good medical staff
- 31:23Speaker 5: down there, So it'll be interesting to watch how this
- 31:25Speaker 5: goes and how available he is and how much this early,
- 31:30Speaker 5: hopefully minor situation can be managed and get him back
- 31:33Speaker 5: on the field.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Wow, we covered a lot and yet there are still
- 31:36Speaker 1: a million other injury notes from the last forty eight
- 31:40Speaker 1: hours so I'm just gonna mention them, but really as
- 31:42Speaker 1: a teaser that if you want to ask Will about them,
- 31:44Speaker 1: then follow his newsletter. You can also send him a
- 31:47Speaker 1: message in a number of ways. You can watch injury Territory.
- 31:50Speaker 1: But just to name a few. Corbyn burns saying that
- 31:52Speaker 1: he expects to be background the All Star break. Rheese
- 31:54Speaker 1: Olsen out for the year shoulder surgery for him for
- 31:57Speaker 1: the Tigers, which helps to explain why they signed from
- 31:59Speaker 1: Rivaldez and and Justin Berlander over the past week.
- 32:02Speaker 5: He kept it secret till they.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Could exactly right. I mean there's a leverage game. The
- 32:07Speaker 1: results too, That's what I just said.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Resultson, Yeah, result Jackson job.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Sorry, Oh well.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Jackson Job's out too, right, so job, I don't know
- 32:14Speaker 1: if he's coming back.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Everyone's like results and Resulson and he's like, by the way,
- 32:18Speaker 2: he's off for the hear Yeah, shoulder searcher.
- 32:20Speaker 1: They had that news. Plus they were fighting Schooble. They
- 32:22Speaker 1: wait till that our battle's done. Then they signed two
- 32:24Speaker 1: pitchers for pretty good cash. Good move, good recovery by
- 32:27Speaker 1: the Tigers. But Will last most important question for today
- 32:31Speaker 1: is to just give everyone a little lowdown of what
- 32:34Speaker 1: to expect with Injury Territory, because you know, we've had
- 32:37Speaker 1: many shows that are team oriented, Prospect Insider, et cetera.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I think this one's probably the most surprising to join
- 32:43Speaker 1: the network. But people are pretty excited to learn what
- 32:46Speaker 1: you're going to do on there in terms of talking
- 32:47Speaker 1: about injuries, which can help fantasy real life following your team,
- 32:50Speaker 1: and some of the guests you're expecting to have too.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, I'm really excited about this for precisely the
- 32:56Speaker 5: reasons we did today. We're going to be talking about
- 32:58Speaker 5: exactly this, the injuries that have happened, why they happen,
- 33:01Speaker 5: and hopefully give you some context. I'm gonna have a
- 33:03Speaker 5: lot of people from inside the game, athletic trainers, doctors,
- 33:06Speaker 5: sports scientists, people doing data behind the game. How are
- 33:10Speaker 5: they looking at it? What is AI going to do
- 33:13Speaker 5: to the inside of a training room. We'll have to
- 33:15Speaker 5: do a whole episode with aj about superstitions and there
- 33:19Speaker 5: I can tell you the whole stories about Sammy Sosa
- 33:21Speaker 5: not wanting to talk to me, or why he injured
- 33:24Speaker 5: his back sneezing when I was there. So it's one
- 33:28Speaker 5: of those things where there's so many different ways this
- 33:31Speaker 5: can go. And everybody knows that injuries can change a
- 33:35Speaker 5: season how many different times. And we said, if we
- 33:38Speaker 5: just had this guy, what would have happened if And
- 33:41Speaker 5: I'm going to explain the context behind the injuries, not
- 33:44Speaker 5: just list the injuries.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Though.
- 33:45Speaker 5: I'm always excited to come on here and hang out
- 33:47Speaker 5: with you.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Guys, will you and the man great segment here very
- 33:51Speaker 1: timely to open up the show, Krat said conspiracy theory
- 33:54Speaker 1: that this show has been planned to launch on this
- 33:56Speaker 1: day and then all these injuries pop up. We are
- 33:58Speaker 1: not doing that voodoo stuff. Well, thank you, appreciate you.
- 34:02Speaker 1: We'll be talking.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Thanks all, guys.
- 34:06Speaker 1: And there are the new shows for the Injury Territory
- 34:08Speaker 1: in the right Middleist Brewer Territory, Canable and Hogue on
- 34:11Speaker 1: that first episode, Polar Romero and Bannon on Bluebird Territory.
- 34:16Speaker 1: We'll talk more about those as the day continues.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Having in fast.
- 34:27Speaker 3: We're moving today.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Evan Phillips one year, six and a half million bucks,
- 34:30Speaker 1: kind of forgot that he was still on the market.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I don't know he's a free agent because he got hurt,
- 34:34Speaker 2: so we missed so much time.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Dude's good though, Yeah.
- 34:39Speaker 1: He was closing for them two years ago for part
- 34:43Speaker 1: of the year, so he's back. Dodgers really needed an arm, Yes,
- 34:49Speaker 1: I'm kind of joking.
- 34:51Speaker 2: They well they used them all, so they need all
- 34:54Speaker 2: the arms they can get. When you say they need
- 34:55Speaker 2: an arm, yes, they actually do because they've you know,
- 34:59Speaker 2: I guess crap Ground are all back. Copex still a
- 35:01Speaker 2: free agent.
- 35:02Speaker 3: True.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Kevin Phillips is nasty when he's right trying and they
- 35:04Speaker 2: don't know what they're going to get. Tanner Scott was
- 35:06Speaker 2: not very good last year when they have Edwin Diaz
- 35:09Speaker 2: and they you know our next guest, Justin Roubleski. He
- 35:12Speaker 2: helped him out huge. But they need all the Listen.
- 35:15Speaker 2: One thing about the Dodgers, they have DiPT because they
- 35:18Speaker 2: go on sign guys for debt.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they DFA had Anthony Bonda, who is
- 35:21Speaker 1: probably gonna get traded to a team that can really
- 35:23Speaker 1: use him. They just dfa'd Ben Rurtvett, who was a
- 35:26Speaker 1: big part of the third catchers Yeah right right, but
- 35:29Speaker 1: ended up getting some PT because of the injuries. So
- 35:32Speaker 1: nice little pick up here. Phillips is thirty one and
- 35:35Speaker 1: he's not back right away. Just for the record, he's
- 35:37Speaker 1: still recovering from TJ. The expected to return is mid
- 35:40Speaker 1: season around July. Next up, yep, Jose Kintana, thirty seven
- 35:49Speaker 1: year old, fifteenth big league season, Colorado Rocky's coming in
- 35:53Speaker 1: hot in February. They were sleeping on us for most
- 35:57Speaker 1: of the offseason and here they come. I mean they
- 35:59Speaker 1: need to get some.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but this is the signings the Rockies do.
- 36:03Speaker 3: But they need this.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I mean, these are smart signings. They are because guess
- 36:07Speaker 2: what if Jose Kintana goes out and pitches, well, they
- 36:09Speaker 2: trade them. They trade them in June, in July, and
- 36:13Speaker 2: they get a prospect they can possibly help it out.
- 36:15Speaker 2: This is Paul de Podesta, the new head of baseball.
- 36:18Speaker 2: They're making smart moves. These are the guys you sign
- 36:21Speaker 2: because then you can hopefully turn them and it's not
- 36:23Speaker 2: going to cost them a ton of money. Then you
- 36:25Speaker 2: hopefully turn them into something that can help you down
- 36:27Speaker 2: the road. So great, I mean you, I'm sorry you
- 36:31Speaker 2: have to go pitch in Colorado, but I love you.
- 36:33Speaker 2: But these you're getting paid and you get to pitch again.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And nowadays they evaluate on what your stuff looks like.
- 36:39Speaker 1: So even if the era is high, I mean they're
- 36:42Speaker 1: well aware of what's going on there. Six million bucks
- 36:44Speaker 1: for Kintana, and you figure Colorado is going to pay
- 36:47Speaker 1: about half of that and then they're gonna flip them.
- 36:49Speaker 1: But ye know, last year had some injuries, but still
- 36:52Speaker 1: with Milwaukee, just shy up before Thera a little over
- 36:55Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty innings, I mean, still can eat innings.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And he's had an above average ERA plus for a
- 37:01Speaker 1: long time now, going back to twenty trying to find
- 37:06Speaker 1: the year where he wasn't at that mark.
- 37:10Speaker 3: I think it's twenty twenty one.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it was the last time he wasn't above any
- 37:14Speaker 1: RA plus of one hundred eight innings.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Effectively, can't find a job because he doesn't throw ninety
- 37:24Speaker 4: five plus. He's going to go out and continue to
- 37:28Speaker 4: give to his team. There's this is a guy that's
- 37:30Speaker 4: very locked into each one of his starts. I think
- 37:33Speaker 4: it'll be interesting to see how these last two signings.
- 37:36Speaker 4: I'm forgetting who the Rockies just signed Savali? Was it Savali?
- 37:40Speaker 3: No?
- 37:40Speaker 4: He signed with the A's anyway. Not getting strikeout guys,
- 37:45Speaker 4: thank you Higano. Not getting strikeout guys. How is that
- 37:49Speaker 4: going to play in Colorado now? I'm not worried about
- 37:52Speaker 4: the Homers. Not worry about the Homers. I'm worried about
- 37:55Speaker 4: balls in play. Just a lot of area to cover,
- 37:58Speaker 4: So we'll be interesting. I'll be interested to see because
- 38:02Speaker 4: he had below a four ERA, you'd think a guy
- 38:04Speaker 4: like that would be a nice little pickup for somebody's
- 38:07Speaker 4: fourth or fifth rotation spot. But I guess it wasn't
- 38:11Speaker 4: meant to be until Colorado came a knocking.
- 38:15Speaker 1: All right, let's keep going with signings. There's two more
- 38:18Speaker 1: to get to that broke today. Jordan Montgomery has agreed
- 38:22Speaker 1: to a one point two million dollar deal with the Rangers.
- 38:25Speaker 1: There's also one point seventy five million potential bonuses. He
- 38:29Speaker 1: is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Target is around the All Star break, reunited.
- 38:35Speaker 2: And it feels so good. Last summer they got Jordan
- 38:38Speaker 2: Montgomery back around the All Star breakday won the World Series.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So are we doing the over under today? I vet
- 38:43Speaker 2: MGM for the Rangers, so we can. I'm take the
- 38:46Speaker 2: over now that monkey's back. I can't believe they're running
- 38:48Speaker 2: it back. I can't believe it. It's unbelievable running it back.
- 38:52Speaker 2: What idiots they are.
- 38:55Speaker 1: You sound like a fan of another team that's not
- 38:59Speaker 1: happy you when the same players returned to the team.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Now Jordan Montgomery has been away from this team. Now
- 39:04Speaker 1: he's returning to this team. Maybe it brings the mojo back,
- 39:07Speaker 1: because ever since Jordan Montgomery left, they.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Haven't been as good.
- 39:10Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I actually think he's going to return and pitch well
- 39:14Speaker 1: for them, you know, like something.
- 39:15Speaker 2: He's got to get back. Well. It's funny, as I
- 39:17Speaker 2: forgot last year he was with the Brewers. Do you
- 39:19Speaker 2: guys remember he was he was with the Brewer. He
- 39:22Speaker 2: was with the Brewers, right. So I go in to
- 39:23Speaker 2: do Milwaukee do a Brewer game, and I'm like, wait,
- 39:27Speaker 2: he hadn't been to Milwaukee. He was there for some
- 39:30Speaker 2: community service award, even though he wasn't really on the team.
- 39:34Speaker 2: He was on the il when he got traded. But
- 39:36Speaker 2: I walked in and he walks in, and I was
- 39:39Speaker 2: talking to Vasalo and the and some of their reporters
- 39:42Speaker 2: and I was like, oh, monkey, and they're like, we've
- 39:43Speaker 2: never met him, Like, oh, he's out on the tunnel
- 39:46Speaker 2: with his wife and they're like, oh, So he walked
- 39:48Speaker 2: in the clubhouse nobody had ever met him because he
- 39:53Speaker 2: never was there.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Did anybody interview him?
- 39:55Speaker 2: I don't know if anyone. I think somebody probably did it.
- 39:58Speaker 2: It was one of those like strange things, things that
- 40:00Speaker 2: you never thought you because you think, like, oh, you
- 40:03Speaker 2: forgot that he got traded to the Brewers, and then
- 40:05Speaker 2: you forget that he was technically on their team even
- 40:09Speaker 2: though he never pitched. But then he shows up for
- 40:12Speaker 2: the first time and nobody knew. Nobody like was like,
- 40:16Speaker 2: what's up, dude, Like, so good to see you, man.
- 40:19Speaker 2: How's the Rehabit was like going around like I'm Jordan Montgomery. Nice.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Everyone's like.
- 40:26Speaker 1: It was weird for a rehab time, not for a
- 40:29Speaker 1: long time because he wasn't going to pitch with them.
- 40:32Speaker 2: No, I know. That's why it was so strange.
- 40:34Speaker 3: It was weird.
- 40:35Speaker 2: But anyways, welcome back to Maybe he learned a.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Thing or two out in Milwaukee.
- 40:38Speaker 1: But for the Rangers, even on the pr side, him
- 40:41Speaker 1: being around the organization, they love him in Arlington.
- 40:46Speaker 3: And all of that, they love him. He was a dog.
- 40:50Speaker 2: That's the American missile.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Years ago.
- 40:52Speaker 4: That's the American missile. He came to spring training the
- 40:55Speaker 4: one year when we had chappion. He was like, you
- 40:58Speaker 4: know what, if he's the Cuban missile, why can't I
- 41:00Speaker 4: be the American missile? And then COVID hit and his
- 41:04Speaker 4: velocity went down. So but forever he'll be an American
- 41:07Speaker 4: missile in my heart.
- 41:09Speaker 3: He can have that nickname. I'm fine with that. I
- 41:12Speaker 3: like it. I hadn't heard that one. So you just
- 41:15Speaker 3: mentioned the Brewers. They're up next.
- 41:17Speaker 1: They signed someone hmm, an old friend, Gary Sanchez one
- 41:22Speaker 1: point seventy five mil.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Who is going to be their backup? Is this your
- 41:27Speaker 2: first big league signing they've had.
- 41:28Speaker 1: I think it is. Am I missing someone? Chat helped
- 41:32Speaker 1: me out or make me look stupid? Am I missing someone?
- 41:34Speaker 2: Well you do that on your own.
- 41:35Speaker 1: You don't need the chat, thank you. Am I missing
- 41:38Speaker 1: someone that the Brewers signed?
- 41:42Speaker 4: I thought they signed somebody. I just talked about it yesterday.
- 41:45Speaker 4: I thought they signed somebody early, like a picture that.
- 41:49Speaker 4: But anyway, eh, Gary, my ex teammate, I mean you
- 41:55Speaker 4: got it.
- 41:55Speaker 2: You can't.
- 41:56Speaker 4: I guess William Contreras can't play every day.
- 42:01Speaker 3: I don't even know.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I don't even know who the other backup was supposed
- 42:04Speaker 4: to be. I honestly thought there'd be a Jonaheim sighting
- 42:08Speaker 4: in Milwaukee because they value the receiving part of the
- 42:12Speaker 4: game a lot, and Jonaheim, you know, I think could
- 42:15Speaker 4: have could have fit into this roster in a way
- 42:19Speaker 4: as a as a switch hitter. Contreres can DH a
- 42:22Speaker 4: little bit more, but el Gary could go try to
- 42:26Speaker 4: hit some dingers.
- 42:28Speaker 3: He's gonna be the backup catcher.
- 42:30Speaker 2: You have it clearly.
- 42:34Speaker 3: I mean he didn't play much last year. He was hurt.
- 42:36Speaker 2: He was hurt a lot.
- 42:38Speaker 1: He only ended up I was looking, I'm like man
- 42:40Speaker 1: even less than I thought. Twenty nine games, one hundred
- 42:42Speaker 1: and one played appearances with the Brewers bad and with
- 42:47Speaker 1: Milwaukee the year before, eighty nine games two hundred and
- 42:50Speaker 1: eighty played appearances six ninety nine ops below average OPS plus.
- 42:54Speaker 3: So it's fine a lot that year. Yeah, well not
- 43:02Speaker 3: for a catcher, but for a catcher, it's above average.
- 43:05Speaker 1: It is above average. I think it was ninety four,
- 43:07Speaker 1: so it's a little above average. Fine, crats, it's fine.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I mean it's fine. It's a it's a backup catcher
- 43:14Speaker 1: who's got some pop for you. I mean he should
- 43:16Speaker 1: be an above average backup catcher.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Yeah, more hitting, Yeah, but he hasn't really been.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I mean, he hasn't been Gary a long time.
- 43:28Speaker 2: It's been a long time.
- 43:29Speaker 4: It has Knowing backup catchers, I was one. If El
- 43:34Speaker 4: Garry is your backup catcher, it's an upgrade. Sorry, I
- 43:39Speaker 4: get it. He's not gonna hit he's not gonna hit
- 43:41Speaker 4: twenty homers in his first twenty five games for the Brewers,
- 43:44Speaker 4: but it's a good it's a good backup. That's the
- 43:48Speaker 4: to me, that's the upper tier of backup catchers.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Agreed, totally agree, same page. That's an upper tier backup
- 43:55Speaker 1: catcher that can do it if he's health on offense,
- 43:57Speaker 1: if he's healthy. The one thing I'll say with him,
- 44:00Speaker 1: because I'm just remembering this, I'm not even going to
- 44:01Speaker 1: say the name of the person who's who's a friend
- 44:04Speaker 1: of mine, who's prominent in our game. He was like,
- 44:08Speaker 1: this guy's got He didn't say pooh holes production potential,
- 44:12Speaker 1: but he was making like pooh holes comps back in
- 44:16Speaker 1: the day. And I'm not doing it right now. But
- 44:20Speaker 1: my question is Kratz is a big fan of him
- 44:23Speaker 1: for years. When you do look at the career, this
- 44:27Speaker 1: guy hasn't lived up to what many thought he was
- 44:29Speaker 1: going to be. I know, he's nice and he's had
- 44:31Speaker 1: a nice career and he's hung around for a while.
- 44:32Speaker 3: But when he came up.
- 44:34Speaker 2: He was going to live up to that hype. Especially
- 44:36Speaker 2: it's really hard.
- 44:37Speaker 3: People thought he was going to be a superstar and
- 44:40Speaker 3: he was. You guys play the cat. You guys played.
- 44:44Speaker 3: He was a.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Superstar for about one year and then he hit. Then
- 44:46Speaker 2: he's a lot of things went wrong. There's the past
- 44:50Speaker 2: fall problem he had right and then I mean he
- 44:53Speaker 2: was basically just a home run hitter for a long time.
- 44:58Speaker 1: You guys played the position where guys get hyped and
- 45:03Speaker 1: fall blow expectations more than any other position in baseball.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Because it's hard. It's hard because it wears, y'all.
- 45:09Speaker 4: There's more things that can go wrong that can derail
- 45:12Speaker 4: that hype. And I wouldn't say it was just hype.
- 45:15Speaker 4: I mean, you talk about sixteen was incredible, you know,
- 45:18Speaker 4: almost one rookie of the year with two hundred at bats.
- 45:21Speaker 2: That was awesome.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Seventeen, you know, we were one game away from going
- 45:26Speaker 4: to the World Series. We lost the Astros. He had
- 45:29Speaker 4: thirty three homers, a ops plus a one to twenty
- 45:32Speaker 4: six eighteen. He only played in eighty nine games nineteen,
- 45:37Speaker 4: played in one hundred and six games, still at a
- 45:39Speaker 4: OPS plus at one nineteen, so it was a good
- 45:42Speaker 4: start to four years. I remember even in twenty Cashman
- 45:47Speaker 4: came in. We were in COVID and Cashman came in
- 45:50Speaker 4: and he was we were kind of going through like
- 45:52Speaker 4: a rough patch, and he was going through like why
- 45:56Speaker 4: he believed in the team and why you know, the
- 45:59Speaker 4: guys that were on that roster, and he was like,
- 46:02Speaker 4: we have a catcher on this team who needs to
- 46:06Speaker 4: get back to the Hall of Fame track that he's
- 46:08Speaker 4: been on for the first four years of his career.
- 46:12Speaker 4: We have to get back to, you know, Aaron Hicks
- 46:15Speaker 4: being the guy that they gave the extension to, and
- 46:18Speaker 4: like Gary was one of those guys. And I think
- 46:20Speaker 4: really after that nineteen season I hit on a few
- 46:23Speaker 4: years ago on the show, but that it.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Wasn't just hype.
- 46:27Speaker 4: It wasn't like prospect hype. It was he was having
- 46:31Speaker 4: a lot of production from the catching position, which just
- 46:37Speaker 4: adds more to things that Aj did in his career,
- 46:41Speaker 4: staying healthy, playing catching a thousand innings and doing what
- 46:45Speaker 4: he did for so long that it needs to be
- 46:48Speaker 4: talked more about in the Hall of Fame category because
- 46:51Speaker 4: it is so freaking tough at that position.
- 46:55Speaker 1: There's examples every year in a variety of ways. There's
- 47:00Speaker 1: Henry Davis, first overall pick and even if he wasn't
- 47:02Speaker 1: supposed to be first overall, top ten pick and super hyped,
- 47:05Speaker 1: and right he's he's found himself.
- 47:06Speaker 3: He's found a lane, but he's not a star.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Adley Rutchman kind of emerged quickly as a potential star,
- 47:13Speaker 1: all Star looking player and then his production is has
- 47:15Speaker 1: dipped down on offense. Right, it is both that's what
- 47:19Speaker 1: I just said and Joey bart Bart Yeah, Matt Weemers,
- 47:22Speaker 1: remember he.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Came up with all the hype and then it kind
- 47:24Speaker 2: of fizzled a little bit.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Yeah, those guys are solid big leaguers.
- 47:29Speaker 2: I think Rushman has a chance to be pretty good.
- 47:31Speaker 2: I do too.
- 47:32Speaker 1: I'm not saying I'm not putting him in the same category.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like he was hyped as like this
- 47:36Speaker 1: could be the best player in the sport, and now
- 47:38Speaker 1: it's like, okay, let's see if he gets his bat
- 47:40Speaker 1: back on track first before we start throwing out.
- 47:43Speaker 2: You know what's strange about a lot of catchers, and
- 47:45Speaker 2: I think Hope, I think Cretz agree with me. It's
- 47:47Speaker 2: a lot of times now Buster Posey Joe Mauer aside,
- 47:51Speaker 2: probably even though Joe didn't catch as long and he
- 47:54Speaker 2: moved to first and Buster only you know, Buster played
- 47:57Speaker 2: what ten years and kind of also had to move
- 47:59Speaker 2: to first sense injuries sadly, but they're both going to
- 48:02Speaker 2: be in the Hall of Fame. A lot of times,
- 48:04Speaker 2: it's like kind of catchers that you don't hear about
- 48:06Speaker 2: that have really nice careers that kind of just fly
- 48:10Speaker 2: you kind of fly under the radar, and like you know,
- 48:14Speaker 2: I use Kurt Suzuki, like because he came up in Oakland, right,
- 48:18Speaker 2: he wasn't I don't know if he was, but he
- 48:20Speaker 2: was like a second round I think the second round
- 48:21Speaker 2: pick when he got there. But he had a very
- 48:23Speaker 2: nice career by just being steady right, steady, steady, steady,
- 48:27Speaker 2: steady YACHTI Molina Back in the day when he came up,
- 48:30Speaker 2: they had Mike Methani. They had to get rid of
- 48:31Speaker 2: Mike Metheni to clear him for Yadi. Now, I don't know,
- 48:34Speaker 2: he wasn't obviously the super high draffick like he was,
- 48:36Speaker 2: but you know, he became something right. It's catching is
- 48:40Speaker 2: so hard to predict, man, it's the hardest. It really
- 48:43Speaker 2: is the hardest position to predict.
