- 1:00:00brands just have really bad popups.
- 1:00:01You know, the past couple of years,
- 1:00:02they're kind of becoming like a cool
- 1:00:04thing again, but for so long, I think
- 1:00:06they're just ignored and it just
- 1:00:08felt like something that was never
- 1:00:09cohesive to the site.
- 1:00:10And so it just feels like they're
- 1:00:11actually being taken seriously.
- 1:00:12And there's been a lot
- 1:00:12of players into the space.
- 1:00:13And so yeah, I'm here for it.
- 1:00:15If I'm pulling levers, I get into a
- 1:00:17client's email account and like the
- 1:00:18first couple of things that I can do is
- 1:00:20either send more emails, make
- 1:00:22the emails look prettier.
- 1:00:23I can fix the pop-up or I can go and
- 1:00:25start messing with flows.
- 1:00:26Like I'm sure it depends by brand, but
- 1:00:29like, do you have any
- 1:00:29examples of like simple changes that you
- 1:00:32made to the pop-up or any
- 1:00:33changes that you made that led to a
- 1:00:34pretty big impact for opt-in rights
- 1:00:36and probably revenues or results?
- 1:00:37Pop-up is like the lowest lift, highest
- 1:00:39impact place that we can touch.
- 1:00:41It's always a part of our initial plans
- 1:00:43for how we help our clients grow.
- 1:00:45You know, developing an email takes time,
- 1:00:47especially when you're first
- 1:00:48meeting a client and getting to know
- 1:00:49their voice and everything.
- 1:00:50But we can probably nail like 20 words of
- 1:00:52coffee on a pop-up pretty quickly.
- 1:00:53But like just last week, we had a client
- 1:00:55where it was, it was as simple
- 1:00:56as just making a pop-up a full screen.
- 1:00:58It was a, a white box variant versus a
- 1:01:00full screen variant, five and a half
- 1:01:01percent to 8.3% same AOV, double orders
- 1:01:04and double the conversion rate.
- 1:01:05All these inbox providers and primarily
- 1:01:06Google, Google's probably
- 1:01:07going to make up 60%
- 1:01:08of your list, maybe 70%.
- 1:01:10Um, they don't tell you what they factor
- 1:01:12into for deliverability.
- 1:01:13And so you're kind of always making some
- 1:01:15assumptions that people always
- 1:01:16talk about like an image to text ratio.
- 1:01:18I think 60, 40 people recommend, but a
- 1:01:20few stuff, text into your emails,
- 1:01:22they're likely going to
- 1:01:23inbox a little better.
- 1:01:24And that's, um, there, I mean, there's
- 1:01:26softwares that are set up around
- 1:01:26this, uh, are just injecting text into
- 1:01:28your emails to help you, uh,
- 1:01:30inbox a little bit.
- 1:01:30Yeah.
- 1:01:31Would you trust like a one
- 1:01:31hour view based attribution?
- 1:01:33If it's Snapchat, I don't trust anything.
- 1:01:34Snapchat says meta click based.
- 1:01:36I started to get a little bit more
- 1:01:37trustworthy, but, um, there's a lot
- 1:01:38of nuance there too.
- 1:01:39So anyways, not to be real.
- 1:01:40And now let's take a listen to the
- 1:01:49scalability school podcast.
- 1:01:51All right.
- 1:01:52Welcome to episode nine of the
- 1:01:53scalability school podcast.
- 1:01:55Brad and I are here with Jacob Sappington
- 1:01:57email SMS retention legend.
- 1:02:00And he's going to talk to us today about
- 1:02:02how these tactics or how we can use
- 1:02:04tactics on these channels, uh, to
- 1:02:06actually make money today, Jacob.
- 1:02:08Welcome to the show.
- 1:02:09Yeah.
- 1:02:09Thanks for having me guys.
- 1:02:10It's my first podcast in a while.
- 1:02:12So, uh, it's good to be back.
- 1:02:13Yeah.
- 1:02:14Well, we, uh, we kicked Zach off in
- 1:02:15exchange, so we're, we're much
- 1:02:17happier for you to be
- 1:02:18here than, than him.
- 1:02:19Yeah.
- 1:02:20Off the Island.
- 1:02:21Yeah.
- 1:02:22Off the Island.
- 1:02:22Yeah.
- 1:02:23He had too many Twitter followers.
- 1:02:25So where does it now it's called the
- 1:02:26losers and the econ
- 1:02:27and Brad and I hosted.
- 1:02:28Yeah.
- 1:02:29Um, the, all right.
- 1:02:30So, you know, there's a ton of things
- 1:02:32that we can get into today.
- 1:02:33I think obviously everybody's here to
- 1:02:34like, what can we do in
- 1:02:36retention and SMS better?
- 1:02:37Um, I think there's a lot of it that you,
- 1:02:39there's a lot of hype and
- 1:02:40there's a lot of ups and downs.
- 1:02:41Brad, there's some like stuff that you
- 1:02:43wanted to get into right away in
- 1:02:44terms of hot or not, essentially.
- 1:02:46You want to, you want
- 1:02:46to kick it off with that?
- 1:02:47Yeah.
- 1:02:48I don't, I don't know if we're going to
- 1:02:49exactly go one by one through this, but
- 1:02:50I think it'll, uh, if we hit some like
- 1:02:52overrated and underrated discussion
- 1:02:53points, I think that can push us into, we
- 1:02:55can take them and go deeper.
- 1:02:57So I'll give you the floor to decide if
- 1:02:59you want to expand on any of these things
- 1:03:00or not, but I'll just, I'll just kind of
- 1:03:02list some things and you let me know how
- 1:03:04you're feeling.
- 1:03:04Um, all right, let's go.
- 1:03:05All right.
- 1:03:06Pop up software, um, or I did underrated.
- 1:03:10I love Clavier software.
- 1:03:12It's including your plan.
- 1:03:13So I would say, uh, the right ones are
- 1:03:16appropriately rated and there's
- 1:03:17a lot that are overrated as well.
- 1:03:19Okay.
- 1:03:19Cool.
- 1:03:20So we don't, you don't have
- 1:03:21to mention specific providers.
- 1:03:22I know you're a big, you're a big fan of
- 1:03:24Clavier for lots of reasons.
- 1:03:26That was actually something I wanted to
- 1:03:27talk about later is like, I feel like
- 1:03:28people are perpetually confused about how
- 1:03:31Clavier bills and I feel like I see you
- 1:03:32on Twitter, I'm explaining it to
- 1:03:33everybody all the
- 1:03:34time we could save that.
- 1:03:35Okay.
- 1:03:35So I guess let's, let's do, let's do is a
- 1:03:38sub bullet point of popups in general
- 1:03:40that like, what are people missing with,
- 1:03:43with popups that makes them not as
- 1:03:46effective as they otherwise should be.
- 1:03:47I think for the most part,
- 1:03:48Branches have really bad popups.
- 1:03:50I think, you know, the past couple of
- 1:03:52years through amped and through
- 1:03:54Alia and through all these other ones,
- 1:03:56like they're kind of becoming like a
- 1:03:58cool thing again, but for so long, I
- 1:04:00think they were just ignored and it just
- 1:04:03felt like something that was never
- 1:04:03cohesive to the site.
- 1:04:05And so it just feels like they're
- 1:04:06actually being taken seriously.
- 1:04:07And there's been a lot
- 1:04:08of players into the space.
- 1:04:09And so, yeah, I'm here for it.
- 1:04:10I love it.
- 1:04:11I want to see, you know,
- 1:04:12more people in our space.
- 1:04:13Do you think that the software is the
- 1:04:16thing that like, is it, is it the
- 1:04:18software that drives the impact like a,
- 1:04:21like an AMP to Oranalia or is it the
- 1:04:22copywriting, is it the offer?
- 1:04:24Is it some combination of those things?
- 1:04:26I'm sure it's a combination, but like,
- 1:04:27how would you wait
- 1:04:28maybe each of those things?
- 1:04:30We always look for three main tactics.
- 1:04:32So we think about the offer.
- 1:04:33I think I could have a great offer and a
- 1:04:35terrible looking pop-up and I could rip
- 1:04:37options.
- 1:04:38Um, I think we think about the build, how
- 1:04:40you functionally put it together matters
- 1:04:41a lot.
- 1:04:42And then the third lever
- 1:04:43that we think about is creative.
- 1:04:44So headlines, um, you know, you know,
- 1:04:49assets that you use for it, those are
- 1:04:50important, but like on mobile, we prefer
- 1:04:52things to be very direct, not a lot of
- 1:04:54creative involved in it.
- 1:04:55And so it's, it's on there, but it's,
- 1:04:57it's third for a reason.
- 1:04:58I think the software
- 1:04:59can make a difference.
- 1:05:00But what I struggle with with different
- 1:05:02software vendors is for the most part,
- 1:05:05they have the same tech.
- 1:05:07What I really struggle with is that, uh,
- 1:05:09you know, how someone defines an
- 1:05:10impression or who they're defining as an
- 1:05:12impression or as a conversion.
- 1:05:13None of us just know.
- 1:05:15So, um, you know, maybe, you know, back
- 1:05:17when AMP first came out, like, uh, I
- 1:05:19always had like, we, we still use them
- 1:05:21because we would like, uh, fact check,
- 1:05:23um, email subscribes in Clavio as a
- 1:05:26source of truth to make sure that
- 1:05:28everything was, um, uh, as an expected,
- 1:05:30like, um, you know, you don't just like
- 1:05:32clone a pop-up and
- 1:05:33double your opt-in rate.
- 1:05:34And so I think that the.
- 1:05:37Biggest confusing point that's still
- 1:05:38confusing for me for a lot of sources is
- 1:05:40just how do you actually define that?
- 1:05:42Um, and trying to get like an Apple
- 1:05:43samples comparison to, to traffic.
- 1:05:46That's the biggest challenge.
- 1:05:47So if we're talking about, let's keep
- 1:05:49going on the pop-up thing.
- 1:05:50Do you fire pop-ups on landing pages
- 1:05:52versus just the main site or do you
- 1:05:54fire them on listicles and
- 1:05:56not just shopable landers?
- 1:05:57Like what's your thoughts on that?
- 1:05:58Yep.
- 1:05:59Um, a lot of brands push the merger with
- 1:06:01their traffic to those LPs.
- 1:06:02I want to capture traffic there.
- 1:06:04It's one of the main ways that we've, uh,
- 1:06:06been able to grow this
- 1:06:07growth for, um, some of our clients.
- 1:06:09The thing is you just have to make sure
- 1:06:10that it's relevant to whatever
- 1:06:11content you have on the shop or the LP.
- 1:06:14Like one of the worst things you could do
- 1:06:15is have a BOGO on your shoppable
- 1:06:18because you're being really aggressive
- 1:06:19with some acquisition offer.
- 1:06:21And then your pop-up offers 10% off.
- 1:06:23And so you're
- 1:06:23immediately adding confusion.
- 1:06:24You're immediately adding friction.
- 1:06:26Someone thinks can I
- 1:06:27combine BOGO on 10% off?
- 1:06:28Um, it's just like
- 1:06:29really weird messaging there.
- 1:06:30So, you know, maybe, maybe listicles are,
- 1:06:32uh, something that's even
- 1:06:34like less offer incentivized.
- 1:06:36Maybe it's, um, something, you know,
- 1:06:38like, I get maybe a guide of some
- 1:06:40sorts or, you know, some, some sort of
- 1:06:42content that resonates with what
- 1:06:43they're actually pushing on the listicle,
- 1:06:44but we want the popups on there.
- 1:06:47We don't, you know, there's always this
- 1:06:48expectation of some level of bounce
- 1:06:50rate increase from adding a pop-up.
- 1:06:52But the, the, the thought process that we
- 1:06:54have is that the LTV of an email
- 1:06:56subscriber is higher than the LTV of a
- 1:06:58non-email subscriber.
- 1:06:59And so my ability to say in front of them
- 1:07:01and the cheaper method than
- 1:07:02meta, um, is really important.
- 1:07:04And so, uh, yeah, we still want them on
- 1:07:06those places as well.
- 1:07:07What do you expect for like good pop-up
- 1:07:08rates, like our collection rate?
- 1:07:10We see a lot of
- 1:07:11brands come to us like 3%.
- 1:07:13Um, we've had some brands
- 1:07:15that we've been able to rip 20%.
- 1:07:18Um, and I think it really just comes down
- 1:07:20to the traffic that they're driving.
- 1:07:22We've had brands we've
- 1:07:23struggled to get to 6% too.
- 1:07:25And so a lot of times those are brands
- 1:07:27that are like, have like really
- 1:07:27heavy organic presences as well.
- 1:07:29And so the reason they're coming on site
- 1:07:31is not the same reason.
- 1:07:32You know, if you're running an ad, um,
- 1:07:34and someone's interested in buying
- 1:07:35today and you're running an offer driven
- 1:07:37pop-up, there's probably a pretty high
- 1:07:40likelihood that they're interested.
- 1:07:41But if someone's coming to you from SEO,
- 1:07:43from organic social, the reason
- 1:07:45that they're there is not to shop likely.
- 1:07:47Um, and so those are the
- 1:07:49times like brands like that.
- 1:07:50We've had brands who had like really
- 1:07:51heavy organic presences and we've just
- 1:07:53had to separate that traffic out or show
- 1:07:56them different pop-ups relative
- 1:07:57to why they're on the site.
- 1:07:58That's really interesting.
- 1:08:00There's, I would love to have like some
- 1:08:02specific examples of pop-up changes.
- 1:08:04So I would say, I'm curious, like if you,
- 1:08:06if you broke things down into, we're very
- 1:08:09heavily deviated off of this overrated
- 1:08:11under-rated and I'm okay with it.
- 1:08:12Cause this is really,
- 1:08:13this is really interesting.
- 1:08:14Like focusing on, um, pop-ups, I think
- 1:08:16it'd be interesting to know like where
- 1:08:17pop-ups generally speaking, whether it's
- 1:08:19the software or not, um, fit into like,
- 1:08:22if I'm pulling levers, I get into a
- 1:08:24client's email account and like the first
- 1:08:26couple of things that I can do is either
- 1:08:28send more emails, make the emails look
- 1:08:30prettier, I can fix the pop-up or I can
- 1:08:33go and start messing with flows.
- 1:08:35Like I'm sure it depends by brand, but
- 1:08:37like, let's, let's say that it is the,
- 1:08:39the pop-up and maybe you disagree with
- 1:08:40that, but like, do you have any examples
- 1:08:42of like massive changes or like simple
- 1:08:45changes that you made to the pop-up or
- 1:08:47any changes that you made that led to a
- 1:08:49pretty big impact for opt-in rates and
- 1:08:51probably revenue as a result.
- 1:08:53Yep.
- 1:08:53Yep.
- 1:08:54Pop-up is like the lowest lift highest
- 1:08:56impact place that we can touch.
- 1:08:58It's always a part of our initial plans
- 1:09:00for how we help our clients grow.
- 1:09:02You know, developing an email takes time,
- 1:09:04especially when you're first media
- 1:09:06client and getting to know their voice
- 1:09:07and everything, but we can probably
- 1:09:09nail like 20 words of copy
- 1:09:10on a pop-up pretty quickly.
- 1:09:11And we've had clients who, we've had
- 1:09:14clients who came on for paid and not
- 1:09:15email, and we've seen the pop-up and
- 1:09:17said, that's actually problematic.
- 1:09:18You're, you're gonna, um, prevent, you
- 1:09:21know, put a roadblock towards paid
- 1:09:23social, having an impact as well.
- 1:09:24And so we've done free pop-ups for
- 1:09:26clients like that before in the past,
- 1:09:27just to not, you know, make
- 1:09:29it harder for our paid team.
- 1:09:31But like just last week, we had a client
- 1:09:32where it was, it was as simple as just
- 1:09:34making a pop-up a full screen.
- 1:09:35It was a, a light box variant versus a
- 1:09:38full screen variant, five and a half
- 1:09:39percent to 8.3%.
- 1:09:41Um, double the orders, double the, um,
- 1:09:45let me think, same AOV double orders
- 1:09:46and double the conversion rate.
- 1:09:48That's pretty, I mean, it's interesting.
- 1:09:50You would say, because I feel like a lot
- 1:09:52of people come in and looking at flows
- 1:09:53as the first place that they're, I mean,
- 1:09:55obviously I think that's where a lot of
- 1:09:56people go, um, and where a lot of other
- 1:09:58email firms go, but you would say pop-up
- 1:10:01is an easier one to
- 1:10:02win, win with right away.
- 1:10:04Pretty interesting.
- 1:10:04Brad, feel free to follow if you have
- 1:10:05other pop-up questions, but I'm going to
- 1:10:07get into like, I'm just going to talk
- 1:10:09about flows for a second.
- 1:10:10So let's say the average client comes in
- 1:10:12there, seven to eight figure brand.
- 1:10:15They have some flow set up like, you
- 1:10:17know, sort of the
- 1:10:18standard win back or whatever
- 1:10:20else, right?
- 1:10:20Like the things that
- 1:10:21everybody tells them to put in there.
- 1:10:23Where are you going to look for
- 1:10:25optimization in terms of places that
- 1:10:27a lot of people aren't looking?
- 1:10:29Yeah.
- 1:10:30Before I jump into that one thing I also
- 1:10:31just want to think about for pop-ups
- 1:10:32is, uh, pop-ups touch everything.
- 1:10:35Pop-ups touch your flows.
- 1:10:36They're, they directly
- 1:10:37feed into your flows.
- 1:10:38Um, if I optimize that content or I
- 1:10:41optimize the framework, um, but I
- 1:10:43don't have more people
- 1:10:44coming in, my upside is limited.
- 1:10:45If I go from a five person,
- 1:10:48I'll turn to an eight percent.
- 1:10:49I'll turn to eight.
- 1:10:49What's that?
- 1:10:50Like 40% maybe something like that.
- 1:10:52So I try to do math here.
- 1:10:53So we don't, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:54Good.
- 1:10:54I could call it.
- 1:10:54That's a good idea.
- 1:10:55That's a good idea.
- 1:10:56But anyway, so like I immediately add
- 1:10:58more people to the,
- 1:10:58to the flow final pains
- 1:11:00are a little bit of, um, a lagging
- 1:11:03indicator that it's like, it's, it's
- 1:11:04like kind of like retirement.
- 1:11:05You know, everyone says that if you start
- 1:11:07saving for retirement when you're 18, by
- 1:11:08the time you're 65, it just like those
- 1:11:10last 10 years, just like shoot up your
- 1:11:12network, it's the same concept where if I
- 1:11:14don't start collecting today and I
- 1:11:16don't optimize that for today, then six
- 1:11:18months from now, I don't have the same
- 1:11:19number of people that I could be talking
- 1:11:21to as I, as I could.
- 1:11:23So Andrew, the, the last thing you said
- 1:11:24there was, um, like how do we triage
- 1:11:27like where to put our focus at in flows?
- 1:11:28Yeah.
- 1:11:29I mean, I guess what I'm saying is like
- 1:11:30everybody had, everybody listening
- 1:11:31to this has exposure to
- 1:11:33some sort of email work, right?
- 1:11:34And I think pop we've identified popups
- 1:11:36as being a place that's, that's an
- 1:11:38unutilized place or utilized place.
- 1:11:41I'm thinking about, all right, what else
- 1:11:42are you looking at that like, aren't the
- 1:11:44normal things that people would be
- 1:11:45looking at in terms of
- 1:11:46optimization around flows?
- 1:11:48So I would say, do they have all the
- 1:11:50flows that we would
- 1:11:51expect them to have in place?
- 1:11:52Are they using either a first party or a
- 1:11:55third party identity resolution software
- 1:11:57to increase their number of triggered
- 1:11:59events for like flows within the flows.
- 1:12:01They do have, do they have enough emails?
- 1:12:02A while back, a client asked us or a
- 1:12:05prospect assets who we end up signing on
- 1:12:06with, um, you know, I only have one
- 1:12:08email, my I'm going to
- 1:12:09check out how much money
- 1:12:10is that costing me.
- 1:12:11And they wanted us to put
- 1:12:11like a dollar figure to it.
- 1:12:13And so what I went ahead and did was we
- 1:12:14took three of our biggest clients, um,
- 1:12:17who were doing probably $10 million a
- 1:12:19month, just in this single flow.
- 1:12:22And we aggregated the numbers and we
- 1:12:23basically found out that 50% of all of
- 1:12:26your abandoned checkout revenue comes on
- 1:12:27email one and then two through five, or
- 1:12:31you know, how many emails you have in
- 1:12:32there contributes to remaining 50%.
- 1:12:34So it's almost like I can get $2, but I'm
- 1:12:36choosing to pick up $1.
- 1:12:37And so it's like, do
- 1:12:39you have the right flows?
- 1:12:40Do you have enough
- 1:12:41emails within those flows?
- 1:12:42Do you have any like technical issues in
- 1:12:44place that are, but we frequently find
- 1:12:46people have flow filters set up
- 1:12:48incorrectly or additional filter set up
- 1:12:49incorrectly, which you immediately maybe
- 1:12:51trim the number of emails that you're
- 1:12:53going to send to someone
- 1:12:53that's a, that's a common one.
- 1:12:55And then maybe the content is just bad.
- 1:12:57Maybe they're, they're not focusing on
- 1:12:58their offers enough.
- 1:12:59Like we've had clients or prospects have
- 1:13:00came into our, um, into our funnel and
- 1:13:04they have an offer on their pop-up and
- 1:13:06then they don't send the offer via
- 1:13:07email for 30 minutes or the whole entire
- 1:13:09first email doesn't contain the offer.
- 1:13:10And so they aren't
- 1:13:11getting that for a full day.
- 1:13:13So I would say like the biggest bucket of
- 1:13:15issues are, do you have the right flows?
- 1:13:17Do you have enough emails?
- 1:13:18Are you layering an SMS in there?
- 1:13:20Um, but then there's a lot
- 1:13:21of like small technical things
- 1:13:22that can break things as well.
- 1:13:23So just to be clear, these flows, these
- 1:13:25are like abandoned
- 1:13:27checkout, welcome flow.
- 1:13:29What are the other ones?
- 1:13:30Yeah.
- 1:13:31What's that?
- 1:13:31So like the welcome flow,
- 1:13:33the browser abandoned flow.
- 1:13:34Um, yeah.
- 1:13:35Everyone says add to cart, but I'm anyone
- 1:13:38you identify with the add to cart, you're
- 1:13:39also going to
- 1:13:40identify through the browse.
- 1:13:41And so the only difference there is I can
- 1:13:43now talk to them a
- 1:13:43little bit differently.
- 1:13:45Otherwise like welcome
- 1:13:46browse, checkout post purchase.
- 1:13:49Yeah.
- 1:13:49If like, and we like to split post
- 1:13:51purchase between pre-delivery and post
- 1:13:52delivery, so what are the expectations
- 1:13:54that someone has as soon as they order?
- 1:13:57Um, and what are the expectations someone
- 1:13:58has after they, their product comes in.
- 1:14:00So much of LTV is
- 1:14:01driven by the product itself.
- 1:14:02And if I can help you adopt the product
- 1:14:04that I'm selling to you, I think my
- 1:14:06likelihood of increasing your LTV goes up
- 1:14:07pretty considerably.
- 1:14:09And this identity resolution thing, what
- 1:14:10does that, what does that mean?
- 1:14:12Yeah.
- 1:14:12So, um, you have all these different
- 1:14:14identity resolution partners out there.
- 1:14:15You have first and third party ones.
- 1:14:17Basically they're saying we help you know
- 1:14:20who people are on your
- 1:14:21list or on your website.
- 1:14:23So the first party ones are ones that
- 1:14:25they're already on your list and you
- 1:14:28know, cookie expires and
- 1:14:29we don't know who they are.
- 1:14:30So they're browsing my website.
- 1:14:32I see someone browsing, but
- 1:14:33I can't say this is Andrew.
- 1:14:35If I knew this was Andrew, I could send
- 1:14:36Andrew an email saying, Hey, Andrew,
- 1:14:37you're checking out this
- 1:14:38protein powder or whatever it is.
- 1:14:40And so first party helps me identify
- 1:14:41people who are already on my list.
- 1:14:43And then the third party ones are the
- 1:14:44retention.com, the
- 1:14:46revenue roles, the open
- 1:14:48sends, all these different ones that say,
- 1:14:51there's someone on your, on your website.
- 1:14:53You don't know who they
- 1:14:54are, but I know who they are.
- 1:14:55And I can tell you who they are.
- 1:14:56At least that's the theory behind them.
- 1:14:58And those love the first party ones.
- 1:15:00And then we're kind of mixing the third
- 1:15:02party ones because they can
- 1:15:03just enter in so many, so many risks,
- 1:15:05especially have done incorrectly.
- 1:15:06Yeah.
- 1:15:07Yeah.
- 1:15:07I mean, I think, yeah,
- 1:15:08that's, that's what I thought.
- 1:15:09And I, there was, I remember reading on,
- 1:15:12uh, reading about retention.com,
- 1:15:14getting into some legal hot water.
- 1:15:15You know, I read it
- 1:15:16on the public internet.
- 1:15:17Okay.
- 1:15:17This isn't just me conjecturing.
- 1:15:19Like I know that
- 1:15:20there's issues around that.
- 1:15:21So I was curious what you meant by that.
- 1:15:23But, um, anyways, sorry, Brian, go ahead.
- 1:15:24Is that, uh, what's your overrated
- 1:15:26underrated take on third party?
- 1:15:27I think a lot of them aren't actually
- 1:15:29great at what they say they're great at
- 1:15:31of actually identifying people and
- 1:15:33matching them to people on your list.
- 1:15:35And if they aren't great at that, then
- 1:15:37they're just like opening up the door
- 1:15:38for like so many deliverability issues,
- 1:15:39which is like the number one
- 1:15:40issue that we see from that.
- 1:15:42You see, you know, previously you'd set
- 1:15:44up like a welcome series of sorts
- 1:15:45for those third party people, which is a
- 1:15:47terrible idea actually, because
- 1:15:48someone's coming to your website, you
- 1:15:49just clone over your welcome series and
- 1:15:51you say, Hey, thanks for signing up.
- 1:15:52And it's like, they actually
- 1:15:53didn't sign up for anything.
- 1:15:54No one really
- 1:15:54recommends that way anymore.
- 1:15:55They kind of bring people into
- 1:15:57the CRM in a much lighter way.
- 1:15:59But even then I'm, I personally don't
- 1:16:01like them, but they
- 1:16:02also drive performance.
- 1:16:03And so it's kind of a balance of what the
- 1:16:05client is interested in.
- 1:16:06I can, I can tell them
- 1:16:07reasons why we don't like it.
- 1:16:08And then we can talk about the risks.
- 1:16:09And then if they decide they want to take
- 1:16:10that risk, then, um, you know, I'm
- 1:16:12more than happy to help them out with
- 1:16:13that one that I've been, you said
- 1:16:14we don't talk about vendors.
- 1:16:16No, you can't know letter it.
- 1:16:17That's all right.
- 1:16:17Okay.
- 1:16:18Well, we'll just go ask him for a
- 1:16:19sponsorship after the fact.
- 1:16:20There we go.
- 1:16:21One that I have been really gung ho to
- 1:16:23test out and I'm, we have a, we're
- 1:16:25assigned a client who was
- 1:16:26already on a test with them.
- 1:16:27And so that should be wrapping up your
- 1:16:28next week or so as customers AI.
- 1:16:31Their whole thing is that they have been
- 1:16:33throwing out reports showing how
- 1:16:35they are much better at identifying than
- 1:16:37other third party ones.
- 1:16:38And if, if the identification rate goes
- 1:16:40up to a pretty healthy degree, and I
- 1:16:42don't carry quite the risk that I do with
- 1:16:44other ones, then I become
- 1:16:46much more interested in it.
- 1:16:47Um, right now it's a, uh, it's very easy
- 1:16:50to, to wreck things
- 1:16:51if you're not careful.
- 1:16:52It's funny that you say that the CI
- 1:16:53identification thing, I know
- 1:16:55if econ brands are using them because
- 1:16:56about 40 seconds after I go on their
- 1:16:58website, my wife is the one that's opted
- 1:17:00in and she's like, why are you on this?
- 1:17:03I was like, I'm just poking around.
- 1:17:04You know, like I'm just doing some
- 1:17:05research and she's like chronically
- 1:17:06the one that's opted in.
- 1:17:07I'm sure it's IP address related.
- 1:17:08Um, and it's, it's hilarious because I
- 1:17:10never get them, which is my preference.
- 1:17:12Anyways.
- 1:17:13So no, it's, uh, it's,
- 1:17:14it's funny that you say that.
- 1:17:15Cool.
- 1:17:16Okay.
- 1:17:16Sweet.
- 1:17:16Well, we can, we can kind of get back on
- 1:17:18the, uh, the overrated, underrated
- 1:17:19chain, cause I think that there's a,
- 1:17:21there's some, there's some fun stuff we
- 1:17:22can continue to dig into there.
- 1:17:23So I think we've talked a fair about,
- 1:17:24about popups and there's probably
- 1:17:26even more to dig into, like maybe you
- 1:17:27have some suggestions on popups and
- 1:17:30we've also talked a bit about flows.
- 1:17:31And again, I'm sure there's some more
- 1:17:32there, but like, let's deviate
- 1:17:34to campaigns for a second.
- 1:17:36Sending volume isn't really like an
- 1:17:37overrated underrated thing, but I guess
- 1:17:39maybe the way to rephrase it is like,
- 1:17:40when you guys look at the average
- 1:17:42account, are they
- 1:17:43sending too much or too little?
- 1:17:45I would say average is too little.
- 1:17:47And I think, uh, you know, previously I,
- 1:17:49I would have said most brands are, are
- 1:17:51good with eight to 10 emails a month.
- 1:17:53And you know that I've been
- 1:17:55at home for almost four years.
- 1:17:56And since then I've had my eyes open that
- 1:17:59you can send far more
- 1:18:00emails than I ever realized.
- 1:18:02We have some clients who send 30 a month.
- 1:18:05So basically daily, we have a couple of
- 1:18:07clients who send two a day, every
- 1:18:09single day, and I think that's pretty far
- 1:18:12beyond what I, uh, think is worth it.
- 1:18:16And we're working with them to hopefully
- 1:18:17reduce that down to just a single
- 1:18:19email a day, doing a
- 1:18:20nice without tests there.
- 1:18:21So anyways, yeah, I think that most
- 1:18:23brands can probably
- 1:18:24send three emails a week.
- 1:18:26Um, if you have a larger list, if you
- 1:18:27have more to talk about, if you have more
- 1:18:29segmentation opportunities, you can
- 1:18:31probably go, um, you know, beyond that.
- 1:18:33But I'm talking like big buckets of
- 1:18:35customers, I'm merely
- 1:18:36engagement audiences.
- 1:18:38You know, if you have like, you know,
- 1:18:39local things happening in LA or something
- 1:18:41like that, and you're seeing it's like
- 1:18:425,000 people, I wouldn't, I'm talking
- 1:18:44about like, like, what am I going to do
- 1:18:45with my major sends?
- 1:18:46I think three a week is a pretty good
- 1:18:48standard for most brands.
- 1:18:51And then the bigger
- 1:18:51brands can go even higher.
- 1:18:52Yeah.
- 1:18:53And so like a seven, eight figure brand
- 1:18:55probably in the seven figure range.
- 1:18:57Three week is probably a good benchmark.
- 1:18:58Once you get into the
- 1:18:59eight, it's more than that.
- 1:19:00So that's further for the people that are
- 1:19:01listening in that seven and eight range.
- 1:19:03If they wanted to go about increasing the
- 1:19:05volume of campaigns, I have
- 1:19:07two questions related to that.
- 1:19:08The first is like, how do they actually
- 1:19:09validate that sending more
- 1:19:11is actually doing something now?
- 1:19:13If they're smaller, sending more revenue
- 1:19:14goes up on the website.
- 1:19:15It's probably pretty obvious, but I'm
- 1:19:16wondering like, okay, how
- 1:19:17do you actually validate that?
- 1:19:19And two, how did they come up
- 1:19:20with ideas for what to send?
- 1:19:22Like, are you, do you guys have a list of
- 1:19:24here's the campaigns
- 1:19:25that we want to talk about?
- 1:19:26I'm sure if you have more skews, it's
- 1:19:28easier, but I guess those, those
- 1:19:29kind of two buckets of
- 1:19:30validation and then ideation.
- 1:19:32So first off, I would just be a
- 1:19:33reasonable benchmark of revenue per email
- 1:19:35and see like, as I increase my cadence,
- 1:19:38does that maintain to a decent degree?
- 1:19:40Another thing is that, um, common trap
- 1:19:42that people fall into is they
- 1:19:43just evaluate the unsubscribe rate.
- 1:19:44And so they will say, Oh, my
- 1:19:46unsubscribe rate's still 0.3%.
- 1:19:48It's a healthy level.
- 1:19:49And it's almost as if like every single
- 1:19:51email, you know, for the most part,
- 1:19:52you're going to send to the same
- 1:19:53audiences pretty consistently.
- 1:19:55And if I'm saying to the exact same
- 1:19:56person every single day,
- 1:19:58then when they unsubscribe,
- 1:20:00it's only, you know, I'm only counting
- 1:20:01that unsubscribe as one out of the
- 1:20:03hundred thousand people in
- 1:20:04the email that I sent to.
- 1:20:05But if you look at gross unsubscribes,
- 1:20:07you see a much different picture where
- 1:20:08it's like, Hey, I only had a 0.3%
- 1:20:10subscribe rate, but I
- 1:20:11lost 2000 subscribers.
- 1:20:13And so I would, um,
- 1:20:15look at revenue per email.
- 1:20:16I'd look at the gross unsubscribe.
- 1:20:17So I'm seeing, um, and then I would just
- 1:20:19try and make a trade off of like,
- 1:20:20understand the trade off is, is an
- 1:20:22additional $10,000 in email worth the
- 1:20:252000 people that I lost off my list.
- 1:20:27Do I, would I rather, you know, one thing
- 1:20:31that brands can use to their advantage
- 1:20:32is promotional calendar.
- 1:20:35And I think anytime you have a
- 1:20:36promotional calendar, you
- 1:20:37can be more aggressive on
- 1:20:38the number of sins that you have.
- 1:20:40And so, um, if you have a really
- 1:20:42consistent calendar where you're
- 1:20:43messaging people, I think that you can be
- 1:20:44more aggressive there without, uh,
- 1:20:46some of the, the risk
- 1:20:47associated with an increased cadence.
- 1:20:49And so, um, those are the primary things
- 1:20:50I'd be paying attention to click rate.
- 1:20:52Trending down is obviously another one
- 1:20:53too, but revenue per email, unsubscribes
- 1:20:56are probably too many
- 1:20:56KPIs I pay attention.
- 1:20:57You mentioned for a client, you're
- 1:21:00running a holdout right now.
- 1:21:01Like is a holdout necessary?
- 1:21:03It sounds like actually isn't maybe even
- 1:21:05necessary in most cases, like it might
- 1:21:06be overkill or many people don't even
- 1:21:09send enough to know in the first place.
- 1:21:10Like how you feel about holdouts.
- 1:21:12Yeah.
- 1:21:12Um, we've not done very many holdouts,
- 1:21:14like really at all, because we're only
- 1:21:16trying to hold out the campaigns as a
- 1:21:19variable and Clavio's own tooling, uh,
- 1:21:21is more so focused on the flows.
- 1:21:23So it took us a little bit of
- 1:21:24brainstorming to figure out
- 1:21:24how we can even handle this.
- 1:21:26Because a lot of times we're relying on
- 1:21:27Clavio's attributed revenue, but if I'm
- 1:21:29holding out a group of 20% of people from
- 1:21:31an audience, of course, I'm not going to
- 1:21:32attribute any revenue to them, even
- 1:21:34though they might actually be purchasing.
- 1:21:36It's just not the money is
- 1:21:36just not being shown to Clavio.
- 1:21:39And so what we did was we, uh, took their
- 1:21:41main segment that they
- 1:21:42send to maybe 650,000
- 1:21:45people, he put it through a flow where we
- 1:21:48attach some properties, group one, group
- 1:21:49two, group three, through five.
- 1:21:51And then we assumed that in a 650,000,
- 1:21:54uh, sample size that
- 1:21:56we would get a fair roll
- 1:21:57the dice and we wouldn't have to worry
- 1:21:59about trying to, uh, hold LTV consistent
- 1:22:02across the groups.
- 1:22:03Thanks Dave, re-cook for that suggestion.
- 1:22:05And then what we've done now is that we
- 1:22:07took 20% of the people we exported the
- 1:22:09data Clavio's exports, allow you to see
- 1:22:12someone's lifetime value.
- 1:22:13And so we're measuring two things.
- 1:22:15Does the LTV lift of group one maintain
- 1:22:18consistent with groups two through five?
- 1:22:20And does the number of subscribers
- 1:22:22maintained also stay, like that, do we
- 1:22:24see an improvement in
- 1:22:25subscribers retained?
- 1:22:26So the holdout test
- 1:22:27is kind of pain to do.
- 1:22:28And I expect that we'll have to run it
- 1:22:29for one to two months
- 1:22:31at minimum to get any
- 1:22:32statistically significant data.
- 1:22:35Um, so yeah, if someone's not sending
- 1:22:37very much, I would say just send more.
- 1:22:38You don't need to over complicate it.
- 1:22:40If you feel like you're sending too much,
- 1:22:41maybe you could do something like this,
- 1:22:42but it is mildly complicated setup.
- 1:22:44Yeah.
- 1:22:44Um, I'll, I'll shut up and let Andrew
- 1:22:46jump in a second here.
- 1:22:48I feel like Dave is also, maybe when you
- 1:22:49send an invoice to
- 1:22:50Dave, I feel like we're
- 1:22:51just constantly saying Dave's name.
- 1:22:52Maybe he's just really good
- 1:22:53at providing value on Twitter.
- 1:22:54And that's why he keeps coming up.
- 1:22:57I used to work for Dave and he taught me
- 1:22:58how you spreadsheets.
- 1:22:59I attribute all my
- 1:22:59spreadsheets to Dave or Chad GPT.
- 1:23:02All right.
- 1:23:02Dave, Dave, Dave's going to send you an
- 1:23:04invoice instead then.
- 1:23:05So awesome.
- 1:23:06Um, cool.
- 1:23:07Okay.
- 1:23:07So then the second piece of that is,
- 1:23:09well, actually, okay.
- 1:23:10Before we dive into getting more ideas,
- 1:23:12what is the sending volume difference in
- 1:23:15that specific test that you're running?
- 1:23:16I'm just genuinely curious.
- 1:23:17103,000 in group one versus whatever.
- 1:23:20130,000 times four is
- 1:23:21265, 20, 130 versus 520.
- 1:23:24Okay.
- 1:23:2420%, 20% to 80%.
- 1:23:26Gotcha.
- 1:23:26And how many, like, what's the difference
- 1:23:27in like actual, um, direct, is it volume
- 1:23:30of emails?
- 1:23:31Like if you're saying you're going from
- 1:23:32three to six a week or like, what
- 1:23:34does that actually look like?
- 1:23:35And it's 14 a week versus seven a week.
- 1:23:37Okay.
- 1:23:37Okay.
- 1:23:37Got it.
- 1:23:38Cool.
- 1:23:38Okay.
- 1:23:38And then my second half of this Andrew,
- 1:23:40feel free to stop, but, um,
- 1:23:42but just like campaign ideation.
- 1:23:43Like if you're going from seven to 14,
- 1:23:46like what, what do you talk about?
- 1:23:47Yeah.
- 1:23:47What are you even going to ask him?
- 1:23:49Yeah.
- 1:23:49I mean, a lot of the ones that are
- 1:23:51sending that frequently offers all the
- 1:23:54time for offer, offer new product
- 1:23:56release, new product
- 1:23:57feature, primarily the
- 1:23:59content there for the
- 1:23:59client that sends a 14 a week.
- 1:24:01Luckily we're not in charge
- 1:24:02of content ideation for them.
- 1:24:04Very likely.
- 1:24:05But, uh, yeah.
- 1:24:06Uh, I mean, anytime your business has
- 1:24:08something to talk about, talk about that,
- 1:24:10uh, product features, testimonial
- 1:24:11features, story features.
- 1:24:13We had a client that's been scaling
- 1:24:14really aggressively in the past year.
- 1:24:16They're not a client of this anymore,
- 1:24:17but, um, they were scaling really
- 1:24:19aggressively and they
- 1:24:21did frequent promotions.
- 1:24:22And at one point we checked their data
- 1:24:24and six other top 10 performing
- 1:24:26campaigns were non-promotional
- 1:24:28story-based messaging
- 1:24:29that was just talking
- 1:24:30about someone's experience with their
- 1:24:31product and how it's helped them
- 1:24:33with problem solution type thing.
- 1:24:35And so I think the first thing I jumped
- 1:24:37to it would probably be offers as a way
- 1:24:38to drive it, but I also know that not
- 1:24:39everyone wants to be so offer heavy.
- 1:24:41So, you know, leaning into problem
- 1:24:42solution, if you have it leading into
- 1:24:45testimonials, reviews, product features,
- 1:24:47half the battle is
- 1:24:48just being in the inbox.
- 1:24:49If you're in the inbox and your mind's
- 1:24:50one day exists, you know, maybe, maybe
- 1:24:52they don't need the product you're trying
- 1:24:54to sell them today, but you reminded
- 1:24:56them that they do need something else
- 1:24:57that you can provide them.
- 1:24:58So half the battle is
- 1:24:59show up in front of them.
- 1:25:00And the other half is like, what, what
- 1:25:02can my content help push you to?
- 1:25:04So somebody goes, how many, you know,
- 1:25:06what's the ratio between, um, sending
- 1:25:08SMS versus email?
- 1:25:10I mean, I feel like you spend send SMS a
- 1:25:13lot less, but curious on that.
- 1:25:15Yeah, we're much more
- 1:25:15conservative with SMS.
- 1:25:16I would say two a week is a pretty good
- 1:25:19number for nearly every brand.
- 1:25:21I have less hard opinions on this, but I
- 1:25:23think one a week would have, would work
- 1:25:25for most brands.
- 1:25:27And again, like, you know, we talked
- 1:25:28about like the cost
- 1:25:29of email being so much
- 1:25:31cheaper than meta, obviously like SMS is
- 1:25:33cheaper than meta, but SMS is still
- 1:25:34really expensive in the cost scale.
- 1:25:36Especially if you're not segmenting your
- 1:25:37list, we see a lot of unsegmented SMS
- 1:25:39lists that are just full list sends.
- 1:25:42So, um, you know, if you're a decent rate
- 1:25:45for our clients, it'd
- 1:25:46be like half a penny.
- 1:25:46We've seen some clients go down to a
- 1:25:48third of a penny, but most people are
- 1:25:50probably sitting at like
- 1:25:51eight, eight tens of a penny.
- 1:25:52And those sound like small differences.
- 1:25:54But when you're sending it to an audience
- 1:25:55of a hundred, 200, 500,000 people,
- 1:25:58and you're sending it multiple times a
- 1:26:00week, we're talking, you know, we had a
- 1:26:02client that we helped save, I think I
- 1:26:04want to say $30,000 every single month
- 1:26:07by segmenting the list.
- 1:26:08And we saw next to no
- 1:26:09drop off in revenue.
- 1:26:11Yeah.
- 1:26:12It's just, they're
- 1:26:12just blasting everybody.
- 1:26:14Yep.
- 1:26:14So another thing I've always been curious
- 1:26:16about is a lot of these emails that you
- 1:26:18get from brands through Klaviyo or
- 1:26:20wherever are heavily
- 1:26:21designed one big graphic.
- 1:26:24Right.
- 1:26:24And then, and then I always feel like the
- 1:26:26plain text stuff looks better and
- 1:26:28actually is what I respond to more.
- 1:26:31So two part question.
- 1:26:32One is, is like, what, what in terms of
- 1:26:34design is innovative and revenue
- 1:26:37driving in email on, and then the second
- 1:26:40one is like, is there an ability to send
- 1:26:43more plain text emails or is there like,
- 1:26:47you know, take that wherever you want to.
- 1:26:50I think plain text stands out because
- 1:26:51everyone sends design.
- 1:26:52I think if every single person sent plain
- 1:26:54text and plain text
- 1:26:55wouldn't work as well.
- 1:26:56Generally speaking, we see, um, you know,
- 1:26:58image driven emails have a lower click
- 1:27:00rate, but they have a better conversion
- 1:27:02rate of people who do click and the
- 1:27:03plain text ones tend to have a much
- 1:27:05higher click rate and a
- 1:27:06much lower conversion rate.
- 1:27:07And so they ended up being like a kind of
- 1:27:10like a wash in the end.
- 1:27:11Uh, I think, you know, back to that
- 1:27:12problem solution brand, they weren't
- 1:27:14doing this problem solutions through
- 1:27:15plain text, but I think anything that you
- 1:27:17can attach a story to
- 1:27:18plain text will do really well.
- 1:27:19And so like, we don't have hard and fast,
- 1:27:21like for plain text a month, but they're
- 1:27:23great whenever you
- 1:27:24need a really quick email.
- 1:27:26They're great whenever you need to kind
- 1:27:27of explain something.
- 1:27:28They're great when you want like a
- 1:27:29personal touch to it.
- 1:27:31And so yeah, they're fantastic.
- 1:27:32We love using them.
- 1:27:33And again, like I think supplement brands
- 1:27:35can really, really lean into this
- 1:27:36because they're, those are always, you
- 1:27:38know, primarily problem solution brands.
- 1:27:40And so, uh, that's a great example of it.
- 1:27:41And then from like, like design
- 1:27:42perspective, don't overcomplicate it.
- 1:27:45Um, you know, we have brands who have, we
- 1:27:47see brands who want to throw a
- 1:27:48million blocks in there or, you know,
- 1:27:50you're just, you're just giving people
- 1:27:51a million different
- 1:27:52things to pay attention to.
- 1:27:54And so, you know, I've heard many people
- 1:27:55say like the rule of one, like have
- 1:27:56one concept for your email.
- 1:27:58I think you can go beyond one, but after
- 1:28:00a couple of modules, a couple of things
- 1:28:02you're trying to get someone to pay
- 1:28:03attention to, uh, you're just
- 1:28:04deleting the message.
- 1:28:04And so I just recommend to keep it pretty
- 1:28:06simple conversion focused
- 1:28:08as CTAs and heroes, maybe, maybe you have
- 1:28:10like some, some product feeds where
- 1:28:11you're helping someone discover different
- 1:28:13products from you guys.
- 1:28:14And you're maybe using like
- 1:28:15the dynamic data that shows.
- 1:28:17Best sellers across your whole entire
- 1:28:18plot mix or one of the
- 1:28:20personalize to this person.
- 1:28:21So there's a lot of, there's a lot that
- 1:28:23you can do, but I would just
- 1:28:23say, just don't overdo it.
- 1:28:25Does this is a, this is a, I'm gonna
- 1:28:27expose myself here is, uh, does plain
- 1:28:30text read differently by like an inbox
- 1:28:32provider, like his Gmail, looking at
- 1:28:34that and actually saying this is
- 1:28:35different than the designed email, like
- 1:28:36something with HTML I'm assuming.
- 1:28:38Um, yeah, I'm just curious.
- 1:28:40Yeah.
- 1:28:40So if you, um, if you're using image
- 1:28:42slices, which is what 95% of DZ brands
- 1:28:45do and what we do as well, I have an
- 1:28:47assumption that Google is not reading
- 1:28:49the image behind that, you know, things
- 1:28:51like AI vision now it's, if it
- 1:28:53isn't happening already,
- 1:28:54it's going to be, um, very soon.
- 1:28:56And so before when you used images, the
- 1:28:59inbox providers had to
- 1:29:00kind of fall back to alt text.
- 1:29:02So yes, image emails have far less
- 1:29:05readability than a plain text would
- 1:29:07both for the inboxes as well as for, um,
- 1:29:09people who are, um, vision impaired
- 1:29:12or have like accessibility concerns, uh,
- 1:29:15you know, all these inbox providers
- 1:29:17and primarily Google, Google is probably
- 1:29:18gonna make up 60% of
- 1:29:19your list, maybe 70%.
- 1:29:21Um, they don't tell you what they factor
- 1:29:24into for deliverability.
- 1:29:26And so you're kind of always making some
- 1:29:27assumptions that people always talk
- 1:29:28about like an image to text ratio.
- 1:29:30I think it's like 60, 40 people
- 1:29:31recommend, but if you
- 1:29:33stuff text into your emails,
- 1:29:35they're likely going to
- 1:29:36inbox a little better.
- 1:29:37And that's, um, there, I mean, there are
- 1:29:39softwares that are set up around this
- 1:29:41that are just injecting texts into your
- 1:29:42emails to help you, uh, and box a little
- 1:29:44bit.
- 1:29:44Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:29:46So you mentioned segmentation in there
- 1:29:48and saving people a bunch of money.
- 1:29:50Um, we can come to the money thing in a
- 1:29:51little bit, but, um,
- 1:29:53what's like the 80 20
- 1:29:54of segmentation, like what, what, what, I
- 1:29:56guess, like, well, how are you
- 1:29:56thinking about segmentation?
- 1:29:58Like, is it we're trying to increase
- 1:29:59relevance, which is going to lead to
- 1:30:01improved open rates and click rates in
- 1:30:03general across both that segment and
- 1:30:05then the broader list as a result or
- 1:30:07like, um, I'm just curious, like mindset.
- 1:30:09And then like, what is like tactical
- 1:30:11piece of advice for like how to actually
- 1:30:12implement segmentation knowing the vast
- 1:30:15majority of your revenue is going to
- 1:30:16come from the hyper
- 1:30:17recently engaged people.
- 1:30:20There's a reason why a lot of agencies
- 1:30:22and people default to like engage 60
- 1:30:24engaged 90 day audiences.
- 1:30:25We want to take it beyond that,
- 1:30:27especially if the
- 1:30:27product kind of demands that
- 1:30:29thing of like jeans, I own some modern
- 1:30:31boat jeans and I haven't bought
- 1:30:32new pairs for four years, but
- 1:30:33I plan to buy some more soon.
- 1:30:35If you looked at me from a, from a
- 1:30:36customer perspective, you said I haven't
- 1:30:37bought in four years.
- 1:30:38I'm a laps customer.
- 1:30:39No, it's just, it's just because you made
- 1:30:40a great product and I don't need to buy
- 1:30:42anymore for awhile.
- 1:30:43And so if your product lends to a longer
- 1:30:46time usage, then you have to give someone
- 1:30:48a reason to purchase, whether that's
- 1:30:50offers, new products, they might like,
- 1:30:53that's, that's like the primary things,
- 1:30:55but, um, uh, it's largely dependent on
- 1:30:58your own product.
- 1:30:59I think people just try to make it a
- 1:31:00cookie cutter approach for everything.
- 1:31:01So yeah, most of your revenue is going to
- 1:31:03come from a small bucket of customers who
- 1:31:05are very, very recent, and you should
- 1:31:06think about email as a dependent channel.
- 1:31:08Email is just pulling people from meta,
- 1:31:10from organic social, from SEO, and it's
- 1:31:13just a cheaper medium to get them there.
- 1:31:14If you had the best flows in place, but
- 1:31:17you didn't have the other channels
- 1:31:18funneling the mental email in SMS, you
- 1:31:20would, they just want to have any impact
- 1:31:22whatsoever.
- 1:31:22So I just want to apologize.
- 1:31:23I'm going to ask about attribution, which
- 1:31:24is if I start to fight on Twitter,
- 1:31:27yeah, which is like, what, what's
- 1:31:30something that everybody misses between
- 1:31:33Clavio paid and GA, what is, what's the
- 1:31:36piece there that you
- 1:31:37feel like most brands
- 1:31:38are missing out on cause I feel like it's
- 1:31:39always a battle to get, to get a full
- 1:31:41understanding of that.
- 1:31:43I think GA is the most conservative look.
- 1:31:45And I think Clavio is
- 1:31:46the rosiest outlook.
- 1:31:48You know, if you're looking at like
- 1:31:49Clavio default, the
- 1:31:50amazing thing is that Clavio
- 1:31:52now has comparative models.
- 1:31:54So I can, we've done this for Zach for
- 1:31:56all of, for multiple brands.
- 1:31:57And they've recently
- 1:31:57adjusted their attribution model.
- 1:31:59But, um, if I wanted to know, are my, you
- 1:32:01know, open rates are really open rate is
- 1:32:03really so much like a view based
- 1:32:04attribution for you guys.
- 1:32:05And if you, if you had a one hour view
- 1:32:08based attribution and the row is was
- 1:32:10solved, which would you trust like a one
- 1:32:11hour view based attribution?
- 1:32:12I don't trust
- 1:32:13attribution, generally speaking.
- 1:32:15Okay.
- 1:32:15So I don't know.
- 1:32:15I don't know.
- 1:32:16You know, it's like, it depends on if
- 1:32:18it's Snapchat, I don't trust anything.
- 1:32:19Snapchat says meta click based.
- 1:32:21I started to get a little bit more
- 1:32:22trustworthy, but, um, there's a lot of
- 1:32:24nuance there too.
- 1:32:24So anyways, not to derail.
- 1:32:25So my point of view is that, uh, open
- 1:32:28rates are open based attribution is
- 1:32:30really similar to view based, but if I
- 1:32:32take it down from a five day down to one
- 1:32:33hour, that's much more trustworthy to me.
- 1:32:36If I like to click based only, that's
- 1:32:37much more trustworthy to me.
- 1:32:39And then I think literally this week, I
- 1:32:40think Clavio is rolling
- 1:32:41out multi-channel attribution.
- 1:32:42Um, I think it just came out like Monday
- 1:32:43and they're multi-touch.
- 1:32:45Um, and so you can like
- 1:32:46weight things differently.
- 1:32:47I like to maintain the default part of
- 1:32:49what's, what's impactful about being
- 1:32:51an agency is that we have so many brands
- 1:32:53that we can look at.
- 1:32:54And if you change the context for how you
- 1:32:56attribute revenue for
- 1:32:57every single client,
- 1:32:58um, you kind of lose some of that, uh,
- 1:33:00that network effect.
- 1:33:01And so the nice thing is
- 1:33:02like, I can compare it though.
- 1:33:03I don't have to change the attribution.
- 1:33:04I can go and I can say, okay, our default
- 1:33:06is this, but if I go
- 1:33:07in and say, um, a one
- 1:33:09day click or a one hour click or seven
- 1:33:10day click, whatever I want to do, I can
- 1:33:12see what that would actually be.
- 1:33:13Um, but while maintaining my baseline
- 1:33:15attribution as the default.
- 1:33:16Yeah.
- 1:33:17That makes sense.
- 1:33:17I there's, I want to go back to just like
- 1:33:20saving money or maybe not even
- 1:33:22necessarily saving money, but like just
- 1:33:23the money piece of it in general.
- 1:33:24Cause I, you know, I think we kind of
- 1:33:26started with this, but I've seen several
- 1:33:28times where like on Twitter, a couple of
- 1:33:30times you suggested like, Hey, do these
- 1:33:32couple of things and that's going to save
- 1:33:33you money on your bill.
- 1:33:34Or you're on the opposite side where it's
- 1:33:36like, no, you're completely
- 1:33:37misunderstanding how your bill works.
- 1:33:38So I think it would be really
- 1:33:39helpful to leave people with.
- 1:33:41And you know, obviously we can dig into
- 1:33:42any couple of things or any, anything
- 1:33:44else we want to, but like what, when you
- 1:33:47first start working with people, like
- 1:33:48what is the most obvious thing that you
- 1:33:50generally do that helps them save their
- 1:33:52bill and like, and then this follow up to
- 1:33:54that is why are so many people
- 1:33:55confused about their billing?
- 1:33:57Because most people use Clavio and Clavio
- 1:33:59did not make it easy
- 1:33:59to understand that first.
- 1:34:01Um, I think it's, uh, the opportunity for
- 1:34:03immediate cost savings is a little bit
- 1:34:05lower now since they've went to active
- 1:34:06profile enforcement.
- 1:34:08So previously they would say, Hey, we're
- 1:34:09going to bill you off active profiles,
- 1:34:10but it's really only based off the number
- 1:34:12of people that I send to an
- 1:34:13a single campaign.
- 1:34:14So if I had a hundred thousand list, now
- 1:34:16I'm paying for a hundred thousand lists,
- 1:34:17but I have 200,000 people, if I split
- 1:34:19those 200,000 people into two different
- 1:34:21segments, I can send to
- 1:34:22both those, no problem.
- 1:34:22And so that was kind of like the, the
- 1:34:24gaming, the manipulation
- 1:34:25that, um, people would do now anymore.
- 1:34:29It's, it's, it's a little more dangerous
- 1:34:30to do this at the forefront of a
- 1:34:31partnership because you don't understand
- 1:34:33their CRM yet, but if I drop in a segment
- 1:34:35of people who are just absolutely dead
- 1:34:38profiles, you know, they've received 15
- 1:34:41emails in the last six months and they
- 1:34:42haven't done anything, haven't been on
- 1:34:44site, they haven't done any of these
- 1:34:45things, you know, like those are probably
- 1:34:46people that are pretty safe to clean out.
- 1:34:48What I'm really hopeful here's a feature
- 1:34:50request for Clavio or for other
- 1:34:52ESPs is that they
- 1:34:53have all the data points.
- 1:34:54They have machine learning teams help me
- 1:34:57understand who I should be sending to
- 1:34:58and who I shouldn't be sending to, which
- 1:34:59that kind of creates a disincentive for
- 1:35:01them because it's going to trim some of
- 1:35:02their costs, but
- 1:35:03that's what I want to see.
- 1:35:04What do you think about, um, the way
- 1:35:06email agencies price, I feel like some,
- 1:35:09you know, it's like email agencies
- 1:35:10sometimes are charging for a number of
- 1:35:11emails there that you're
- 1:35:13sending, they're charging too much.
- 1:35:15When does that get out of hand for you?
- 1:35:17Like, what do you think is the most
- 1:35:18efficient way to charge and when,
- 1:35:20what should people look out for?
- 1:35:21We've went through our own
- 1:35:22iterations of like how we charge.
- 1:35:23And so I think I have a
- 1:35:25good perspective on this.
- 1:35:26I, we previously used to have a set price
- 1:35:28and then you would get a number of emails
- 1:35:31and I basically tried to relay it to
- 1:35:33people that they were basically playing
- 1:35:34X dollars per email.
- 1:35:36And then I think that that kind of
- 1:35:37diminishes the expectation around
- 1:35:40the strategy work that gets done.
- 1:35:42And so we moved away from that and we
- 1:35:43say, Hey, the bulk of what you're
- 1:35:44paying us for strategy and the creative
- 1:35:46gets tacked onto that.
- 1:35:48And if you want to add additional emails
- 1:35:49on top of your plan, you can do it for
- 1:35:51$250 in email, whatever it is.
- 1:35:54And so, you know, for a lot of brands,
- 1:35:55they're going to send an email and make
- 1:35:5710 grand with their very, you know, nice
- 1:35:59attribution, but you know, $250 is
- 1:36:02usually no brainer for most brands to
- 1:36:04say, Hey, I have something I want
- 1:36:05to talk about next week.
- 1:36:06Let's do it.
- 1:36:07I have seen agencies charge as much as a
- 1:36:09thousand dollars in email,
- 1:36:10which I think is crazy.
- 1:36:13I think at that point, I think one of the
- 1:36:15hardest things about hiring an agency or
- 1:36:18hiring a, an email marketer is if you
- 1:36:20don't have the skillset, you don't know
- 1:36:21how to evaluate for it.
- 1:36:23And so maybe you bring in someone who
- 1:36:24helps you find the right fit.
- 1:36:26You have someone audit you and tell you
- 1:36:27how they would run the account.
- 1:36:28But if you're paying a thousand dollars
- 1:36:30in email, you should probably just
- 1:36:31hire in house.
- 1:36:32So yeah, I, on the low end, I've seen
- 1:36:35like people charge really low rates.
- 1:36:38Just, you know, as they're freelancing,
- 1:36:39getting their foot in the door,
- 1:36:40whatever it is.
- 1:36:41And I feel like I have since we, since we
- 1:36:42haven't, I haven't been in that world
- 1:36:44for four years when I put freelance.
- 1:36:45And so I have less of a perspective on
- 1:36:47that, but on the high end, I've seen
- 1:36:49agencies charge like a thousand dollars
- 1:36:50in email, which is just crazy.
- 1:36:51So we'll just finish off with a section
- 1:36:54that we like to call beefs with Z, which
- 1:36:56is anything, anybody, anything or anyone
- 1:37:00you want to get into that it really
- 1:37:01bugs you about the work that you're doing
- 1:37:03in terms of industry wise, in terms
- 1:37:06of tactics that you see that really bug
- 1:37:08you things that you would want to get out
- 1:37:09in the air.
- 1:37:10But if you need a second to think, I'll
- 1:37:12start out with Zach.
- 1:37:13Well, okay.
- 1:37:14Well, I want to say
- 1:37:14my, my beef is with Zach.
- 1:37:15That's why he's not here.
- 1:37:16We're just, we're
- 1:37:16just, we're really beefy.
- 1:37:17The D the text right now are just insane.
- 1:37:21They're just, yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:37:22So anyways, drives me crazy.
- 1:37:23When people force, you know, we're back
- 1:37:26on popups for a second.
- 1:37:27When people force you to go to your
- 1:37:28inbox, to get a
- 1:37:29coupon code, some agencies
- 1:37:31will do this on accident.
- 1:37:32Others will do it maliciously and say,
- 1:37:34Oh, we're driving up a tribute revenue.
- 1:37:36Cause you're forcing an email open, which
- 1:37:38I think is really dumb.
- 1:37:39You're immediately making them compete
- 1:37:41against 50 other brands in their inbox.
- 1:37:43If you're sending them a text, you're
- 1:37:44making them compete against their spouse,
- 1:37:46their friends, their
- 1:37:47hobbies, whatever it is.
- 1:37:48And so I'm okay accepting a lower
- 1:37:50attribute revenue, keeping them on site,
- 1:37:52putting the coupon on a pop-up and just
- 1:37:53like being like, we've had clients who
- 1:37:55I've, who we've said your attribute
- 1:37:56revenue is going to drop.
- 1:37:58The only thing that we're changing is the
- 1:37:59word the code is listed.
- 1:38:00This is better for you.
- 1:38:02So I've got beef with everyone
- 1:38:03that does that intentionally.
- 1:38:04Yeah.
- 1:38:04It's usually, it's like our biggest one,
- 1:38:06I would say Brad or degrees, like in the
- 1:38:09paid social worlds, people
- 1:38:10hold stuff hostage, right?
- 1:38:11Like they, they build it in their own ad
- 1:38:13account and they're in their own
- 1:38:15business manager and then the client like
- 1:38:17leaves and still there.
- 1:38:18It's a mess to unwind all that.
- 1:38:20People don't want you to hold it.
- 1:38:22So anyway, Jacob,
- 1:38:24thank you for being here.
- 1:38:25If people have questions,
- 1:38:26I can funnel them to you.
- 1:38:28You can always reach out to

- 1:38:32Yeah.
- 1:38:32Thanks for having me guys.
- 1:38:34Thanks.
- 1:38:34The only way that we grow this podcast is
- 1:38:43by you sharing it with your friends.
- 1:38:46Honestly, like reviews kind of don't
- 1:38:47really mean anything too much anymore.
- 1:38:48They're really meaningful, but they don't
- 1:38:50do a lot for the growth of the podcast.
- 1:38:52Um, and so sharing YouTube links, sharing
- 1:38:54Spotify links, sharing Apple,
- 1:38:57whatever we call it under the podcast app
- 1:38:59now, anything you can share the
- 1:39:01better we're going to be guys, anything
- 1:39:04else you want to say on this?
- 1:39:05Yeah.
