- 1:53The Deadly Poker game and Judge Carlton missing father. That's Second Brace Homicide Bureau.
- 2:07God In O'Brien. This is James Morrell speaking from Edward cunningham residence in
- 2:12Oak No. Yes, mister Cunningham justin found dead in his bedroom and I
- 2:15called his doctor and he suggested that I notify the police is the right thing.
- 2:20But the address are there eighteen thirty seven Oak No. And eight three
- 2:24seven Oak Though. We'll have a man right now. Yah. Where's Captain
- 2:31Reynolds or Nicole Ryan back yet? Okay, all right, send a man
- 2:36in to hold the test down. I'm going out on a through it.
- 2:59Oh, I'm right here, and I'm James Mollis, the man who called
- 3:01you. I'm Chargan O'Brien. I suppose you want to go right upstairs?
- 3:05Yeah? Oh, I haven't left this gentleman, Olizen. Mister Collins a
- 3:08banker? How do you do, sir? How did you do? Stargans?
- 3:10A shame that had to happen. We've all been Who's the lady in
- 3:15the next room, Jane Wilson. Mister Cunningham's Nie. She's she's rather hard
- 3:20hit by what's happened you see. She was very fond of her uncles,
- 3:23who's been practically a father to her. And did your doctor rya here?
- 3:29He's upstairs now be pronounced mister Cunningham dead, Yes, sir? Which one
- 3:35of you discovered the body? I did, Sargeant? Where were you at
- 3:38the time, sitting down here smoking a cigar? I was dark with the
- 3:40shot and one upstairs to invest again? Where were you Maria at the dug
- 3:45Start on the corner, mister Cunningham, But don't sent me on an error,
- 3:46and you see, I'm mister Cunningham's secresy. Where was miss Wilson upstairs
- 3:52in her room? We both met in the hallway outside that was, I
- 3:54mean mister cunningham room. And she heard the shot, yes, and she
- 3:59was investigating. And it's the same as I was. I went to the
- 4:01door to Cunningham's room and now there was no answer, so I opened the
- 4:03door and went in. Or I suppose Miss Wilson and I both saw him
- 4:06at the same time. I see, well, we'll run upstairs and see
- 4:11the body. If you're a coomping your or and it's Colin, you'd be
- 4:15the kindness to step into the next room and ask miss Wilson. Let's leave
- 4:18until I have a chance to talk to her very well. Either way,
- 4:20Morris was right up these stairs. Oh. I asked why he did it?
- 4:27He had everything he wanted. He's never spent at the first moment as
- 4:30far as I know, and do funny things at times right off here.
- 4:33But mister Cunningham is the last person on earth you'd expect to submit suicide.
- 4:38Why do you say that? Because he got so much fun out of living.
- 4:42Edward Cunningham was a born gambler, not a seximum mind do, but
- 4:46he loved his card. That's why mister Collins is here tonight. They had
- 4:49a game schedule judge the two of them. And no, there was another
- 4:53gentleman, a man named Brady. He often played with mister Cunningham and mister
- 4:56Collins. I see, and Brady hasn't all up yet. No, he
- 5:00called it took the clock, telling mister Cunningham that he would be unable to
- 5:03come this evening. Mister Cunningham seemed greatly disappointed. And here we are.
- 5:10This is doctor Wood. It's hard to know. Brian's then headquarters. Doctor
- 5:13you do? What do you do? But the news dot there and looks
- 5:15like an ou non case of suiside targan, a body was found just as
- 5:19it is. You will not if the wound and pop marks on the foregn
- 5:24a gun is just beyond his hand where it must fallen. I alwasy been
- 5:28dead only a very few minutes. He left low notes. I didn't see
- 5:31one. You do more? Why? No? Well, it's customary,
- 5:35isn't it for a suicide to leave a note or something. I'm sure that
- 5:39you're in a better position to answer that than I am. You say that
- 5:44mister Cunningham had sent you to the drug store for something that you weren't in
- 5:46the house at the time the shot was fired. So that's right. What
- 5:49had mister Cunningham sent you after a box of cigars? Oh? I see,
- 5:54well, I've done all I can. You've sent for the coroner that
- 5:57yet, I'll do it as soon as I've had time to look around.
- 6:00Very well, well, I don't believing if I'm a longer anything. Just
- 6:02one question, doctor, Is the body lying in a natural position for a
- 6:06suisid? Yes? I said it. And there's the usual amount of powder
- 6:12grains about the wound. Well, there's one thing that doesn't quite come up.
- 6:15A standard there aren't as many powder brains as I've seen in other cases.
- 6:18But of course it's a rather small gun. But even then there should
- 6:23be a few more powder marks. That's what I was thinking. Oh,
- 6:27thank you, doctor, I'm telly welcome. Oh how's Jane Morris better?
- 6:32She's a brave girl. Feel pulled to all that? However, you might
- 6:36see her as we leave. She didn't study any myself. Roll okay,
- 6:42you know of any reason for cunning him to kill himself? No? I
- 6:46don't. His business affairs are in good shape. Yes, he was a
- 6:48very wealthy man. He had no worries. Missus Wilson drop it by this.
- 6:55She'll inherit his money iddly. However, she really doesn't need it.
- 6:58She has a millionaire sous. Oh I see for Cunningham and Collins and friendly
- 7:02terms. Oh yes, sir, they've been fend for years. And this
- 7:05mister Dradie who was scheduled to appear tonight and didn't. I can't say about
- 7:11him. Was mister Cunningham in this room when he sent you for the cigars?
- 7:15O? Yes, all right, Will you step down and tell mister
- 7:19Collins that I'd like to see him for trest mister Collins, you've known him
- 7:46for twenty years and have never known of him to be in any trouble of
- 7:49any sorts crimes. I's known who'd want to kill Cunningham. He's always kind
- 7:55and thought you were here tonight for a poker game, I believe, miss
- 7:59Collins. Yes, they get to cut into play twice a week. He
- 8:01stays run for the eye, so we make it interesting. How much of
- 8:05the normal losses during an evening? Oh, I should say ten or fifteen
- 8:09thousand? Oh, he did make it interesting. Well, that's all a
- 8:13matter of view points. But do you know about this fellow Brady who found
- 8:16it inconvenient to show up tonight? Very little? He was introduced to me
- 8:22at the Clover Club, And there's a gambler from the word go, I
- 8:24think cunning I'm enjoyed playing with him. Was Brady a winner? On the
- 8:28contrary, he was a heavy loser the night before last at my club?
- 8:31Cunning him with sports to take his eye or used for twenty five thousand dollars?
- 8:35Oh nice profit or one line? Well, I better forget about poker
- 8:39and get busy with my reports. Oh, send miss Wilson, that will
- 8:43you show it? Oh, sim English Wilsons and started O'Brien. Yeah,
- 9:01I know. I am sorry to have to ask you questions at a time
- 9:05like this, but it'll be bad to get everything cleared up. I understand.
- 9:09Do you know any reason for your uncle committing suicide? Not a single
- 9:13reason. Uncle Edward was a happy go lucky person, not the type to
- 9:18predict to his son. Where were you when you heard the shot in my
- 9:24room? Where is that at the end of the hole? Well? What
- 9:28did you do after you heard the shot? I ran out of the hole
- 9:31just in time to see mister Collins coming up the steps. He both went
- 9:35to uncle's room and saw him. Did And where was mister Moore of this
- 9:41secretary out in an erland? I believe he came in about five minutes later.
- 9:46I see it's Wilton. Do you know, mister Brady, I've met
- 9:50the man. H You don't seem to approve of your uncle's joy for the
- 9:54part assist the man. There's nothing more of a professional gambler. I have
- 9:58no use for him. Uncle told me where he signed them in debt amountains
- 10:03for twenty five thousand dollars. Did you see the IOUs? Yes? Where
- 10:05did your uncle keep them in this floor here, that dog the groom gone.
- 10:13Yes, I saw a group of them there this afternoon. Perhaps Brady
- 10:18came by and paid them. Now, I can soon tell you so as
- 10:20as soon as I opened the safe while you're doing that, I looked through
- 10:22his wallet there. But there's only one hundred dollars in the safe, less
- 10:33than that in the wallet. I think we can safely assume that the IOUs
- 10:37were not paid. You recognize this done, Yeah, it's a camp's tedry
- 10:43Marvel twenty two. Uncle Edward used it for target practice. I see you
- 10:48know your firearms. Did he ever attach a silence or to it? Not
- 10:54that I know of? No, I'm sure he didn't. I went to
- 10:58the rent for him the two times I see. Can you tell me,
- 11:03miss Wilson, what is the issues in the fireplace here? No? I
- 11:07can't good here, mister sergeant, if you feel that my uncle's death is
- 11:13a suicide, or do you keep poking around and asking from any questions?
- 11:16One so that my dear young lady would be to give away a very ingenious
- 11:20plot. Oh how do you do, mis Wilson? Why did you change
- 11:41your driver for me? I thought you might like to be in on the
- 11:43final episode of our drama. What do you mean? I thought you might
- 11:46be interested in the outcome of my investigations. You mean that Uncle Edward's death
- 11:52Lack was not a suicide, Your uncle, Miss Wilson, was the victim
- 11:56of a very cold blooded, deliberate murder. I was fairly sure of.
- 12:00It's the first day they're in your house. Since then, I've learned things
- 12:03that have led me to the murderer. I've had my men trailing in for
- 12:07days, and I find there were two in on the schemes. They're in
- 12:11that room talking things over. If you like, we'll go in and give
- 12:15them a little surprise visit. Step over here with me. I believe that.
- 12:20Are you ready for a surprise? Yes? All that? Oh,
- 12:26what do you mean? It's to Morris. Don't bother getting up, it's
- 12:28your seat. I believe your friend is mister Brady. What do you mean
- 12:33breaking into my apartment this way? I am here on an errand Morris,
- 12:37like the one you ran for Cunningham and night he was killed. Only myron
- 12:41will be completed. Morris, I arrescue and Brady for the murder of Edward
- 12:46Cunningham. Not one of your moves even AIRTI case, you're both headed for
- 12:52a hangman's news. Do you mean that more? My uncle Text three was
- 12:58indicated in this dead Solitaire, I certinally do. However, he was just
- 13:01a poem for Freday Trady Long twenty five thousand dollars. Your uncle in a
- 13:05bok again. He had to get those io used back, so he constructed
- 13:11a scheme with Morris to get the io used and to rob your uncle's safe
- 13:13at the same time most truck store. I don't see how the murder was
- 13:20accomplished. Who you remember that? I asked if your uncle had ever used
- 13:24the silence er on the guns. I found the marks of a silencer on
- 13:28the barrel. Morris killed him with a silencer, then removed it, wiped
- 13:33the gun clean, put your uncle prints on it, left the shot.
- 13:37Get it. I just explained that in leaving Moore's toss the blank cackege into
- 13:41the glowing pole in time and exploded, giving him time to get downstairs and
- 13:46established an alibi. Oh here's a start for his prisoners. I think he's
- 14:35there. Just a minute, detective, you're Captain Trend That's a minute it
- 14:43sure take. Reporter, are you here? Sure, I'm here. Tell
- 14:46that big stiff on the city's test and I'm on a big case. Tell
- 14:48me that you would better talk to him. Give me up on Hello.
- 14:54Sure, I'm on the job. Hey, don't you ever get tired of
- 14:56check it up? Sure I'm at but a lot of good it'll do me
- 15:01tent don't know any more about it in yodel. Okay, okay, okay,
- 15:09Yeah, you see how it is. The old man's riding me to
- 15:11death on the thing I told you all we know, Porter, if Judge
- 15:15Carlson hasn't been kidnapped, he's invited. Yeah, but where don't you realize
- 15:18that it's the biggest case of the year And here you guys are sitting around
- 15:22waiting for him to come in and say, Hello, boys, I've been
- 15:24out on a picnic. No, we're doing everything we can. You and
- 15:26that photographer you got with you aren't helping anybody hounding us on me? Well,
- 15:30what about it? I'm getting how today? I listen, Captain,
- 15:33you gotta find Judge Carlsons that two million readers of the Gazette demanded. Yeah,
- 15:37since when the two million people start wasting their time, you better wake
- 15:41up that dummy of the camera man over there in the chair and get out
- 15:43and fill your face. He've got work to do in here. Yeah,
- 15:46well, what's that three alarm fire somewhere? They're following the reserve officers on
- 15:52the traffic spot. Just my speed. Hey, whippe, wake up?
- 15:56Wake up? Give me that telephone book? Im in this? Captain?
- 15:58Hey, wake up? Well you's oh it's you. Can't you ever let
- 16:03a cry? Rest and come on, come on, step out of it
- 16:07both. There's work to be done. Hey, where is that fire?
- 16:08Captain? Why ask me? There's a telephone? Hello? Hello? Hello?
- 16:12Hey, where's the fire? Where? Night? Come on, sim
- 16:18it's kind of a down on spring. Come on, come on and don't
- 16:21get your numball. Take it up at that camera there. I'll pay enough.
- 16:48Come on, don't wait at him off plate on this bonfire? Hey,
- 16:51who's shoes in the fire? I gotta take one more? I tell
- 16:52you some of these may be no gun. It's gets too hot here,
- 16:56get busy, bums. You want me to hold a plate case of after?
- 17:00You're the next one my telephoto. Let's you if we can get up
- 17:02on that building over there, up away from this crowd and get sort of
- 17:04a third dive view of the whole day. He heads a man cart in
- 17:08there. If there is, this picture will make the front page in the
- 17:11city. Ed Or howls head off if we don't get a good all right,
- 17:15good dumb fuck. I was gonna get up there by this alley over
- 17:18here and stop calling me Millie all right, way out he'll be there.
- 17:26Ought to be a pirate escape in the back of this alley. That'll take
- 17:29us up to the road. All right, come on, I'm comfortable.
- 17:32Be careful of that camera. I don't tell them where you going, dummy.
- 17:36Not as dark as all that I stumbled on some Hey, hey,
- 17:38Ed, look holy smoked as guy laying here in the alley, and I
- 17:44clipped, okay, quick spring a light on him. Eh booze some drunk.
- 17:48Maybe there's a flashlight, right, chubby Meadows. Yeah, must have
- 17:53been hitting the funnel pretty heavy to get this drunk. He's not drunk.
- 17:56Look blood, yeah, quick, you run down the corner and get a
- 18:00copy, then get to the nurse phone and call Captain Trent. I'll stay
- 18:03here. Well, guy, there'll be plenty of cane raised over this.
- 18:18We'll see who is Hebby medas at the Star. Is he dead? Yeah?
- 18:21Two slugs in his heart. Looks like he's been shot from behind.
- 18:25I got a friend of mine calling Captain Trent, you better stay here and
- 18:26lay a ride. Huh. You know? Is he the guy who placed
- 18:30all those action pictures for the Star? Yeah, one of the best lads
- 18:32in the business. He's trying to drink a bit, but he's eight high
- 18:34among the newspaper photographers. Oh air comes, went pey, you get dead?
- 18:38Hey? Yeah, and he'd be right over. I had to run
- 18:42two blocks for a phone. The captain should be here pretty quick. Could
- 18:47you find he's been shot in the back. Looks like he was on the
- 18:49assignment. Maybe he was down here photograph the fire? Is the chubby's Cameron
- 18:53Porto kas too? Yeah? Gee, that's too bad. He was a
- 18:59swell guy. It'll be tough on his wife's too. Wife. I didn't
- 19:02know he was married. Yeah, get married more than a year, got
- 19:06a wife and a kid. Be hard on them. I'd like to have
- 19:08a whold of the dirty rats up. Pull this. Yeah. Bet his
- 19:11paper will blow the lid off on this, then, I bet we all
- 19:14will. That must be Captain Trent. Yes, his car. All right,
- 19:18hey, you better get Chubby's camera and playcase out of the way.
- 19:25What's going on for her? Chubby murtters, somebody plugged him in the back?
- 19:29No, what did I say? Yeah, take a look for yourself.
- 19:33What was he doing here? Looks like he was taking pictures of the
- 19:34fire. That's his business. I mean, what was he doing here in
- 19:37this alley? Well, wimpy here had that go for the idea going up
- 19:41on the top of this building across from the fire and making a few shots.
- 19:45Chubby probably had to say, my dear Mike, got a couple of
- 19:48cars and throw lights on this alley from both ends. Go over the place
- 19:52with a fine tooth comb and see what you find. That's like a cold
- 19:53blooded, deliberate murder. If you ask Gray, did Chubby have any enemies?
- 19:57Well, you know as much about it as I do. Chubby Meadows
- 20:00wasn't the kind of a newspaper man who made enemies. All. He sure
- 20:03run into something. What assignment was he working on? How should I know?
- 20:07I worked for the gazette, George, job to find the guy who
- 20:08shot him? Take apply to this won't be and then faded. The old
- 20:12man will probably put an next crowd and says I pulled in my story.
- 20:15Then where you're going in the headquarters with trend. I want to follow this
- 20:18thing through. Develop those fire pick too. As soon as you get a
- 20:21chance, Murphy'll probably want to use them as a pillar in the next position.
- 20:22Okay, Hey, ye, big dummy, don't forget your plate case.
- 20:26Huh oh no, all right, thanks, Yeah, we'll find out,
- 20:52Captain. When I talked to the city editor of the Star, he
- 20:55says that Chubby Meadows wasn't on any particular assignment tonight. Did you ask you
- 20:59about any pre his assignment? Yes. The other had told me that Chubby
- 21:02had been following up some leads on Judge Carlson's disappearance, but nothing came on,
- 21:04eh, Judge Carleson, Eh, yeah, I sent a couple of
- 21:07men down to the paper to quiz all of meadows friends and associates. We
- 21:11may get something out of them, yeah, Judge Carlson, Eh, Hey,
- 21:15did they identify the body they've found in the fire tonight? There wasn't
- 21:18anything left to identify. With some teeth in a seat of keys. They're
- 21:21checking up on the keys, now, I mean, is that good for
- 21:26nothing? Porter in here, Oh there you are. What do you mean
- 21:29sending Wimpy in with a picture like this and not giving me a line on
- 21:32it? What do you mean? I called the whole story in before I
- 21:34left the scene. I sent Whimpy in with the pictures. We got the
- 21:37pictures, but not a line on Judge Carlson. Duds Carlson, who said
- 21:41anything about Judge Carlson, who said, say, are you playing that egl?
- 21:44But I think you are. I phoned in the whole story of finding
- 21:48Chubby Meadows in the alley before I came down here with Captain Trent, who
- 21:51said anything about Chubby Meadows. We got that story. We're on the speech
- 21:55for an hour. But I wanted to follow up on that picture you took
- 21:57at Judge Carlson. Hey, are you hot? Picture? Hot picture?
- 22:02Do you mean to say that you didn't take this? Here? Take a
- 22:04look at this picture? Well, for the love, hey, Captain,
- 22:08take a look at this Judge Klaus. Yeah, and that big lug walking
- 22:12with him is Steve Jaeger. Where did you get that picture? Part?
- 22:15I didn't take it? Waby must have taken it. Whimpy says he didn't
- 22:19take it. He says, you must have taken it while he was running
- 22:22for the telephone. Well he's crazy as usual, say, well, Chubby
- 22:27Meadows took that picture. What do you mean? Chubby Metters took that picture
- 22:30and that's why he was killed. Whimpy picked up the wrong plate case when
- 22:34he left he developed Chubby's pictures. Well, I'll be then. You didn't
- 22:38take it? No, you Captain trim What quiet? Oh? Okay,
- 22:48okay? Now what they've just identified the body in the rooms as Judge Cross.
- 22:52They was they identified the keys in the ring as belonging to Judge Cross.
- 22:56That's something wrong there. We got a picture of Judge Karlston and Steve
- 23:00Yeager walking together. I wonder where Meadows took this picture? Looked like the
- 23:04alley where we found him. Now I know what happened. Judge Carlton is
- 23:11in on this. So Steve Yeager Jaeger is the one who probably turned the
- 23:14heat on Chubby. Why, well, you remember the indictment against Yegger,
- 23:17don't you. Carlton turned it down. I've noticed lately that he's been letting
- 23:21Yeager's hoodleums go free. When that grand jury threaten an investigation, Judge Carlson
- 23:26disappeared. Then there's a fire and he tries to make it appear as if
- 23:30he's been caught in the fire. And Chubby Meadows saw them walking and took
- 23:33a flash light of them and try to get away and with kid exactly Hello,
- 23:41not a minute for you porter. It's that dumb camera maner Eh oh
- 23:45say this? Have your big was that? When? Oh you did?
- 23:52Eh? Good boy? What's the Adred? Get this? Captain six one
- 23:57Quinton good Hello, you stick outside and we'll be right down six twenty one
- 24:03Clinton, what's up? Wimpy just called to say that three lugs drabbed him
- 24:07coming out of a restant and took his camera and plate case away from him.
- 24:11If that's the reason Shebby Meadows was killed, they thought Whimpy had this
- 24:14pick cabag. You haven't heard the best of it. We've be grabbed a
- 24:17taxi and followed the three months. He called from across the street from where
- 24:19they're staying. He's not shut down. Good, get a car and three
- 24:25men in front right away. Come on, we've cornered those rats. Wen'by
- 24:37said he'd made us at the corner. I don't see Look, it's that
- 24:41dumb photographer. He's been hurt. Quick, he's been hit on my head?
- 24:45Hi kied oh okay, I guess they we're heading to the airport.
- 24:52I tried to bluff him out of it, but they shock me on the
