- 0:09Good morning, family. All right. Excellent. All
- 0:16right. If you guys would, please turn to 2 Timothy
- 0:18chapter 2. Before we do that, we will read. So
- 0:24we will read from the 1689 London Baptist Confession,
- 0:27chapter 13, section 1 of... They who are united
- 0:34to Christ, effectually called and regenerated,
- 0:39having a new heart and a new spirit created in
- 0:44them through the virtue of Christ's death and
- 0:47resurrection. are also farther sanctified really
- 0:53and personally through the same virtue by his
- 0:58word and the spirit in dwelling in them. Amen.
- 1:02So love those things. Such good stuff. So we're
- 1:06going to pray and we're going to get started.
- 1:09Okay. Father, I want to thank you so much for
- 1:11your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord,
- 1:13for your word. Thank you that you are at work
- 1:16molding and shaping and growing your people into
- 1:19the full maturity of Christ. I pray, Lord, that
- 1:23we would be people willing to make a stand on
- 1:26the truth, proclaim it boldly, walk in humility,
- 1:30and be wise in our conversations. May everything
- 1:34we do bring honor and glory to you, being obedient
- 1:37to the chief and commander in chief of our faith,
- 1:39run the race. to win the prize, and Lord, as
- 1:44farmers, that we would work the field so that
- 1:49we can enjoy the harvest. To you be honor and
- 1:52glory forever, in Jesus' name, amen. Chapter
- 1:552, 2 Timothy, you then, my child, be strengthened
- 2:00by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what
- 2:03you have heard from me in the presence of many
- 2:05witnesses, entrust to faithful men. who will
- 2:10be able to teach others also, sharing in suffering
- 2:13as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier
- 2:16gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his
- 2:19aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An
- 2:23athlete is not crowned unless he competes according
- 2:26to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who
- 2:30ought to have the first share of the crops. Think
- 2:33over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding
- 2:37in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from
- 2:41the dead, the offspring of David, as preached
- 2:44in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound
- 2:48with chains as a criminal, but the word of God
- 2:52is not bound. Therefore, I endure everything
- 2:55for the sake of the elect, that they also may
- 2:58obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus
- 3:01with eternal glory. The saying is trustworthy,
- 3:06for if we die with him, we will also live with
- 3:09him. If we endure, we will also reign with him.
- 3:13If we deny him, he also will deny us. If we are
- 3:18faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot
- 3:21deny himself. Remind them of these things, and
- 3:24charge them before God not to quarrel about words,
- 3:27which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.
- 3:31Do your best to present yourself to God as one
- 3:34approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed,
- 3:38rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid
- 3:41irreverent babble, for it will lead people into
- 3:45more and more ungodliness, and their talk will
- 3:49spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus
- 3:52and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth,
- 3:57saying that the resurrection has already happened.
- 4:01upsetting the faith of some, but God's firm foundation
- 4:05stands bearing this seal. The Lord knows those
- 4:10who are his, and let everyone who names the name
- 4:13of the Lord depart. from iniquity. Now in a great
- 4:17house, there are not only vessels of gold and
- 4:20silver, but also wood and clay, some of honorable
- 4:24use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone
- 4:28cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he
- 4:31will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart
- 4:34as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready
- 4:39for every good work. See, so flee youthful passions,
- 4:43pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace,
- 4:47along with those who call on the Lord from a
- 4:50pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish,
- 4:53ignorant controversies. You know that they breed
- 4:58quarrels. The Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome,
- 5:02but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently
- 5:05enduring evil. correcting his opponents with
- 5:09gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance,
- 5:13leading to a knowledge of the truth. And they
- 5:16may come to their senses and escape from the
- 5:19snare of the devil after being captured by him
- 5:22to do his will. It's quite a bit. Question is,
- 5:27are we going to get through the whole chapter?
- 5:28We are. You're like, that's a lot. Yes. Five
- 5:33points, five sections. and let's go for a ride.
- 5:38You guys ready? All right, first one. A genuine
- 5:42godly leader obeys the commander -in -chief of
- 5:45faith, runs the race to gain the prize, works
- 5:48the field with patience and endurance to receive
- 5:51its fruit at harvest. Therefore, do not throw
- 5:55away your confidence. which has a great reward,
- 5:58for you have need of endurance, so that when
- 6:01you have done the will of God, you may receive
- 6:04what is promised, Hebrews 10, 35 through 36.
- 6:08I want you to notice a couple things here. You
- 6:11then, my child, be strengthened by the grace
- 6:15that is in Christ Jesus. Jesus is your strength.
- 6:22You don't get strength anywhere else. You get
- 6:24strength from Him. It is an absolute necessity
- 6:27that you are fully dependent upon the King of
- 6:31kings and the Lord of lords. You need Him to
- 6:34be strong. When you're weak, He makes you strong.
- 6:38In your weakness, you find your strength. He
- 6:41is your strength, and it's in Him. Second, and
- 6:45what you have heard, Now this word means learn
- 6:49from hearing. Now I want you to get that. So
- 6:53what you've heard or what you learned from hearing
- 6:56from me in the presence of many witnesses. So
- 7:00what Paul is saying to Timothy is all the things
- 7:04that you've heard concerning the doctrine and
- 7:06the truth of Christ, you've heard and learned
- 7:09from me in the presence of many witnesses. You
- 7:13have grown in faith. He says now, this entrust,
- 7:19these things, these truths, you need to give
- 7:22to faithful men. This word entrust means to be
- 7:25kept and taught to others. You must be obedient
- 7:29in the trust, and then you must teach others
- 7:33to do the same. Exactly what we talked about
- 7:35to the kids. Do we keep the Word of God and teach
- 7:40others to do it also? And it's one thing to give
- 7:44it away. To people who aren't faithful, it's
- 7:48another to give it away to faithful men. The
- 7:50question is, what kind of man are you? What kind
- 7:53of believer are you? Are you faithful? Are you
- 7:56not faithful? What's interesting is this word
- 7:58faithful men means reliable and trustworthy.
- 8:02Reliable and trustworthy. Are you reliable and
- 8:06trustworthy to keep, hold, and do the Word of
- 8:11God? teach it. This word here, meaning who will
- 8:16be able, this is hikanas. Hikanas is the word
- 8:20fit, sufficient, or competent. Fit, sufficient,
- 8:25or competent to teach others also. That's one
- 8:28of the major problems in our churches today,
- 8:30is because there are men who are not fit, who
- 8:33aren't even competent to teach the word. And
- 8:36they're there standing behind a pulpit with thousands
- 8:39of people following them. And they have no clue
- 8:42what the word of God says. They just tell you
- 8:43what you want to hear. You get the fluffy. I
- 8:47talk about this like every week because it's
- 8:49so prevalent in our day to day. We have to have
- 8:52men who have been entrusted with the truth of
- 8:55God's word, who can teach it to others, who are
- 8:58reliable and trustworthy, and who are fit and
- 9:01sufficient and competent to do it. Too many.
- 9:06I can't help but think about the, it's not a
- 9:09political statement, so I'm just letting you
- 9:11know that. But I watched the Rose Garden signing
- 9:14of this declaration of the National Day of Prayer.
- 9:20Does anyone realize the representatives of the
- 9:23religious community that were present there?
- 9:27Paula White? Are we serious? That's the Christian
- 9:32evangelical representative of the faith of Jesus
- 9:36Christ for the National Day of Prayer, along
- 9:40with all the ecumenical, non -believing, quote
- 9:44-unquote Christians of all kinds of, we call
- 9:47that a National Day of Prayer. That's crazy.
- 9:51Why? Because we have entrusted the truth of God
- 9:55to people who are not fit, sufficient, or competent,
- 9:59which means they don't give out truth. They just
- 10:01give out lies. Come on. I can't help but, as
- 10:06a pastor, sit there and just cringe at some of
- 10:10these quote -unquote teachers of the gospel.
- 10:13Now, Share in suffering. So not only should these
- 10:18people be fit, sufficient, and competent to teach
- 10:20others, but he also tells Timothy, share in suffering.
- 10:23Suffer hardship together with one another. Do
- 10:27we suffer hardship together with one another?
- 10:30I will tell you, it's one of the things as a
- 10:33pastor that as a believer in Christ, you must
- 10:38learn to do and do well. If you don't learn to
- 10:41suffer well, you can't shepherd well. And if
- 10:44you don't learn to, if you can't suffer well
- 10:46and learn to suffer well, then when you suffer
- 10:49with others, you actually don't really spend
- 10:52time with them at all. And I've seen this in
- 10:54some pastors too, where there's hurting within
- 10:57the church, within the family of God, there's
- 10:59hurting within people and they don't spend time
- 11:03talking with them. They give like 30 minutes.
- 11:08Like 30 minutes is enough time to help. When
- 11:11you counsel, it's not a timeline. God guides
- 11:15the conversation. God guides the counseling.
- 11:18God determines what that person needs in that
- 11:22conversation. Learn to suffer with one another.
- 11:26Do you suffer with others? Are you willingly
- 11:31suffering with those who are suffering? Are you
- 11:35putting yourself out there? Hebrews chapter 10
- 11:37says that the believers willingly went out and
- 11:43suffered with them and accepted the plundering
- 11:46of their property. Are you willing to suffer
- 11:49with each other? As a good soldier of Christ
- 11:53Jesus, Paul says. Notice he doesn't say as a
- 11:58good believer. He says as a good soldier. Why?
- 12:01How many of you guys have been in the military?
- 12:03What's the number one responsibility being on
- 12:06the field? No one gets left behind. That's what
- 12:12it means. No one gets left behind. If you suffer,
- 12:16I'm suffering with you. We go together. You're
- 12:20not alone in this. No soldier, no one who leads
- 12:25soldiers to battle gets entangled in civilian
- 12:28pursuits. This is hard for me. I will be honest
- 12:32with you. Lord knows there are times I want to
- 12:35get on my soapbox. There's times when it's proper
- 12:38to deal with issues. But this is difficult. It's
- 12:45one of the reasons why if you go on my Facebook,
- 12:47either I delete things because I guess the Lord
- 12:50convicts me and so does my wife. But I don't
- 12:56put stuff on there. Why? Because we get involved
- 13:00with things that have nothing to do with the
- 13:02kingdom. Notice what it says here. No soldier
- 13:05gets entangled in civilian pursuits. This word
- 13:08civilian pursuits is the idea of getting involved
- 13:11with issues not related to the kingdom. I mean,
- 13:14how many things do we get involved in that have
- 13:16nothing to do with Jesus? A lot. Why do we, why
- 13:22should we as leaders of the church not get involved
- 13:28in the junk because our aim is to please the
- 13:32one who has enlisted us into his army. I want
- 13:35to make Jesus happy, pleased with my service.
- 13:40Now, that's hard. I know it's hard. An athlete
- 13:47is not crowned unless he competes according to
- 13:49the rules. So if I'm running a race and I cross
- 13:52the finish line and the judge comes to me and
- 13:55says, you know what? You just tripped that guy,
- 13:57you know, trying to get into just like right
- 13:59there. You just did in front of everybody. I'm
- 14:01like, no, I'm first. I crossed the finish line
- 14:04first. I'm the winner. Well, there's a rule.
- 14:07You can't trip the runner running next to you.
- 14:09You know, how many guys have saw the girl running
- 14:13with the baton? And this girl is chucking right
- 14:16past her and she just like hauls up, like not
- 14:19running like this, like who in the world comes
- 14:21up like this and kabong somebody? Kabong! How
- 14:24many of you guys have seen Bugs Bunny? I'm a
- 14:28big, if you haven't seen, so all you young people
- 14:30have no idea of Bugs Bunny. But Bugs Bunny kabongs.
- 14:36You know, I crown you king of Nottingham. Kabong!
- 14:39You know, she kabonged her really badly. That
- 14:44picture just floods my brain. That being said,
- 14:48do you run the race according to the rules? God
- 14:51has set the rules for the Christian race right
- 14:54here. You don't get the choice of what rules
- 14:57you obey and follow. You follow them all. Jesus
- 15:01says, if you love me, you will obey my commands.
- 15:05Now, second, it is the hardworking farmer. who
- 15:11ought to have the first share of the crops. I
- 15:14mean, don't you want to enjoy the harvest and
- 15:16the work that you have put in? So Paul then turns
- 15:21and says to Timothy, think over what I say. The
- 15:25Lord will give you understanding. What's the
- 15:27understanding of all this? It's very simple.
- 15:32Obey the commander in chief of the faith. Run
- 15:35the race to gain the prize. Work. the field with
- 15:39patience and endurance to receive the harvest.
- 15:44Your work is not forgotten if you do it well.
- 15:49Godly leaders are not ashamed of Christ the King
- 15:52and his gospel. They are willing to suffer for
- 15:55it. For I have been crucified with Christ, yet
- 15:58I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The
- 16:02life I now live in this body, I live by faith
- 16:04in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself
- 16:07for me. Galatians 2 .20. You're like, how do
- 16:11you know that's my favorite verse? After all,
- 16:13it's on the wall in my office. It's the key to
- 16:17the Christian living. The key, you're dead. Let
- 16:21Jesus live it. Remember, call to mind, recollect.
- 16:26Paul says to Timothy, remember, recollect Jesus
- 16:30Christ. What about him? Risen from the dead.
- 16:34He's the risen savior. The offspring of David,
- 16:37reigning king. As preached in my gospel. Not
- 16:42only did Jesus come to die on the cross, but
- 16:45he rose from the dead to show he has victory
- 16:48over sin, death, and the grave. And he reigns
- 16:51as king on the throne of David. Does your gospel
- 16:57carry the weight of the risen Christ and the
- 17:01reigning king? And he says, for which I am suffering,
- 17:06bound with chains as a criminal. In arrest. He's
- 17:12been arrested. He's locked up. And he is stuck
- 17:16there. He can't leave. He's in house arrest.
- 17:20And what does he do? He writes letters. All of
- 17:24the letters you read. He writes letters. The
- 17:29Word of God is not bound. You might be able to
- 17:31bound the person. You might be able to imprison
- 17:34the person, but you can't imprison the Word of
- 17:37God. Take it from me. God will speak regardless
- 17:41of whether I have the written word or not. He
- 17:46speaks regardless because his word is living
- 17:48and active. The word of God is not bound. It's
- 17:52not stuck by chains, regardless of anything that
- 17:57someone would try to do, especially in the days
- 17:59to come. Therefore, he says, I endure everything
- 18:03for the sake of the elect. I endure. everything
- 18:06for the family. Do you? Are you willing to endure
- 18:11everything for the family? And are you willing
- 18:14to endure everything for the family that have
- 18:17not come home yet? We have brothers and sisters
- 18:21that aren't home yet. That being said, says this,
- 18:27he says it this, he says that they also may obtain
- 18:31salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal
- 18:35glory, not temporary temporal glory, eternal
- 18:39glory. Are you going and getting the family?
- 18:43Bring them home. Bring them home. The saying
- 18:47is trustworthy. If we died, with him, we will
- 18:50also live with him. If we endure, we will also
- 18:54reign with him. If we deny him, he also will
- 18:59deny us. If we are faithless, he remains faithful,
- 19:04for he cannot deny himself. Regardless of what
- 19:08we do, Christ always wins. Godly leaders avoid
- 19:15foolish controversies. not pertaining to the
- 19:19kingdom and of Christ. What's this mean? Don't
- 19:24get into stupid arguments about nothing. It's
- 19:28a waste of time. Walk in wisdom towards outsiders,
- 19:32making the best use of the time. Let your speech
- 19:35always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that
- 19:40you may know how you ought to answer each person.
- 19:43Colossians 4, 5 through 6. Remind them of these
- 19:48things, Paul says to Timothy. Timothy, remind
- 19:52the people of these things. What things? All
- 19:56the things I just told you. Don't get involved
- 19:59in civilian affairs. Preach the gospel. Christ,
- 20:03the risen Savior, the reigning King. All the
- 20:06things that I've just said, remind them of them
- 20:08and charge. Earnestly affirm is the idea here.
- 20:13Earnestly affirm them before God not to quarrel
- 20:18about words, not to dispute over trivial things.
- 20:22It's crazy. Why do Christians do this all the
- 20:25time? Because I have an opinion. I'm going to
- 20:28say this as lovingly as I possibly can. God doesn't
- 20:32care about your opinion. Your opinion doesn't
- 20:34matter when it comes to the truth. God says what
- 20:38he says, whether you like it or not. God don't
- 20:40care about your opinion. Opinions are like, nevermind.
- 20:45It was always lit somewhere. Sounds kind of harsh,
- 20:50doesn't it? Because if God was moved by everyone's
- 20:53opinion, would he ever get anything done? Therefore,
- 20:57look what it says. Why are these things important?
- 21:02Why should we not quarrel or dispute about trivial
- 21:06things? Because they're not good, which does
- 21:09no good, but only ruins. Catastrophe is the word
- 21:15here. It's the word we get the word catastrophe
- 21:17from. It only subverts, overthrows, and destroys
- 21:21the errors. It doesn't help anybody. Paul says
- 21:25it this way. Do not let any unwholesome talk
- 21:28come out of your mouths, but only that which
- 21:30is useful for building up others. Stay out of
- 21:34disagreements and arguments that mean absolutely
- 21:36nothing. And what we do as Christians is we find
- 21:40a reason to fight instead of preaching the gospel.
- 21:44We got all kinds of things that we can get involved
- 21:47in and picket at. Picketing doesn't do anything.
- 21:51How about if you sit down with that person and
- 21:53preach them and teach them and bring them the
- 21:56love of Jesus? Drives me nuts. Anyway, we should
- 22:01be totally different. I mean, can you see the
- 22:03difference between the believer who pickets and
- 22:06complains because it's our freedom to do so in
- 22:09the country versus the non -believer? Is there
- 22:11any real difference? No. They're both complaining
- 22:15about something they can't control. Just saying.
- 22:20Look what it says here. Do your best. Spudazzo.
- 22:24I kind of like that. Spudazzo sounds a little
- 22:27Italian. Spudazzo. Spudazo, hasten, exert oneself.
- 22:35Are you hastening? Are you exerting yourself
- 22:38to present yourself to God as one approved? Are
- 22:42you putting in the work? Or do you come to church
- 22:46to be told what you should do? Or are you spending
- 22:50time challenging what you've been told? proving
- 22:54that that teacher is right. And then if he is
- 22:56right, are you willing to change what is wrong
- 23:00in your theology? Because every one of us are
- 23:03theologians. Now, look what it says. This word
- 23:08approved, dakemas is the word here. It means
- 23:12to approve by testing, tried, and genuine. Do
- 23:15you approve? Have you proved it by testing it,
- 23:19trying it, and finding it to be genuine? That's
- 23:22the type of person that you should become, one
- 23:27who is approved, one who has been proven by detesting,
- 23:31by being tried and proven to be genuine, a worker,
- 23:35a doer, a laborer, a practitioner of the Word
- 23:39of God, who has no need to be ashamed, no cause,
- 23:44or has anything to do with being ashamed. There
- 23:48can be nothing brought against you whatsoever.
- 23:52That you could be ashamed that you have mishandled,
- 23:55misused, misappropriated the word and the truth
- 23:59of God. Rightly handling is the word here. And
- 24:02this word rightly handling means to make straight
- 24:04and smooth as if you were cutting a paper. What
- 24:08are we cutting? What are we making straight and
- 24:10smooth? The word of truth. Are we making straight
- 24:13and smooth the word of truth that we are fitting
- 24:17into that according to his purpose and will?
- 24:22Notice again, verse 16, he says, but avoid irreverent
- 24:26babble. Reference verse 4 and 14 again. This
- 24:30is now the second time, almost the third time
- 24:33that he tells them, stop arguing about stupid
- 24:35stuff. Why? Because it will lead people into
- 24:40more and more palas, or palus is the word here,
- 24:45means much ungodliness. And their talk will spread
- 24:48like gangrene. Mortification. Now, you ever looked
- 24:52at something that was gangrenish? Once it's gangrene,
- 24:55you can't make it un -gangrene. You can't heal
- 24:58gangrene. You cut it off. It's mortified. It's
- 25:02beyond repair. It is dead. The only way to get
- 25:06rid of something that's dead is to cut it off.
- 25:08That's the idea here. Now, think about that.
- 25:10When we get involved in this foolish conversations,
- 25:15this irreverent babble, Then we lead people into
- 25:20much ungodliness. And as a result, the talk spreads
- 25:25like gangrene. If you have any question about
- 25:29that, look at some of these guys who are teaching
- 25:31and preaching today. Why do I talk about this
- 25:34all the time? One, I'm going on sabbatical for
- 25:36a month. And we have five godly men who are going
- 25:41to come and give you the word. Praise God. Do
- 25:44you know how many churches don't have that? Holy
- 25:46smokes. Now, he mentions these two particular
- 25:50guys. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus.
- 25:54Now, if you went to Bible study on Wednesday,
- 25:58we talked about 1 Thessalonians and 2 Thessalonians.
- 26:01And these two gentlemen went around saying that
- 26:05Jesus returned and they got left behind. We read
- 26:08that in a minute. Isn't that interesting? Why
- 26:11would Paul mention these two guys in his letter
- 26:14to Timothy? Because Timothy... went to meet Paul
- 26:18in Corinth when he left Thessalonica. Isn't that
- 26:23interesting? So, the very thing that Paul's talking
- 26:26about here is mentioned in 1 Thessalonians chapter
- 26:312 and 2 Thessalonians, I mean, 1 Thessalonians
- 26:36chapter 5 and 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. Now,
- 26:41What happens with these men? Well, they swerved
- 26:44from the truth. They've shipwrecked their life.
- 26:47They've become ineffective, worthless, saying
- 26:52that the resurrection has already happened. Now,
- 26:56I'm a Reformed guy. You guys know that. So to
- 26:59some of our Reformed gentlemen who teach, this
- 27:04may be a little bit of a problem, I think, in
- 27:06how they present that the resurrection has already
- 27:09happened. If it is, we're in trouble. So it has
- 27:13not. Not the second one. You're like, there was
- 27:17a first resurrection? Yes, there was a first
- 27:20resurrection. When Jesus was crucified, all the
- 27:24graves were open and they were just waiting for
- 27:26Jesus to come out. And many saw them after his
- 27:31resurrection, saw the resurrected people afterward.
- 27:34That's the first resurrection. There is a second
- 27:36coming. A second resurrection is coming. That's
- 27:39the resurrection they're talking about here.
- 27:41It has not happened yet. How do we know? But
- 27:45this is what it says. But God's firm foundation
- 27:48stands bearing this seal. Now I want you to notice
- 27:52he uses this terminology for a reason. He says
- 27:55God's promise concerning your redemption is absolutely
- 28:00guaranteed. It's a seal for you. A guarantee.
- 28:06This truth you can stand on, and it is an absolute
- 28:10guarantee. The Lord knows those who are his.
- 28:13Get that. The reason why he hasn't returned yet
- 28:17is because you're here. He hasn't forgotten you.
- 28:21And let everyone who names the name of the Lord
- 28:24depart from iniquity. Get your life cleaned up.
- 28:28You want to make sure that when he returns, he
- 28:32finds you busy. And he finds you full, controlled
- 28:37by the Spirit, living a life that is holy and
- 28:40good. Godly leaders must maintain a holy and
- 28:44faithful life to be useful and usable. Now, if
- 28:49anyone builds on the foundation with gold and
- 28:51silver, precious stones, hay, wood, and straw,
- 28:55each one's work will become manifest, for the
- 28:58day will disclose it. Because it will be revealed
- 29:01by fire, and the fire will test what sort of
- 29:05work each one has done. If the work that anyone
- 29:08has built on the foundation survives, he will
- 29:11receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned
- 29:15up, he will suffer loss, though himself will
- 29:19be saved. but only as through fire, 1 Corinthians
- 29:233, 12 through 15. Interesting enough, Paul uses
- 29:27the same terminology here. 2 Corinthians 2, 20
- 29:32through 21. Now, in a great house, Paul uses
- 29:37this term, God's family, God's house. There are
- 29:41not only vessels of gold and silver, but also
- 29:45of wood and clay. So this is not... The scripture,
- 29:50contextually, that talks about the God out of
- 29:54the same lump of clay creates vessels for noble
- 29:57use and vessels of ignoble use. It's not what
- 30:00he's talking about there. Here he's talking about
- 30:03vessels that are already in the house. Vessels
- 30:05that are clean and vessels that are dirty. That's
- 30:09why I use 1 Corinthians 3, 12 through 15. God's
- 30:12vessels. Notice what he says here. They're not
- 30:15only vessels of gold and silver, but also wooden
- 30:17clay, some for honorable honorable use, meaning
- 30:20usable, and some dishonorable, meaning unusable.
- 30:24I don't know about you, but sometimes my dishwasher
- 30:27doesn't do the job. I go in, get a cup of coffee.
- 30:31What do I find? Caked and burnt on the bottom
- 30:34of the coffee cup. Yep, you guessed it. Like
- 30:38why did not, why did that not clean? It's pretty
- 30:41disgusting. So I don't want to use it. It's not
- 30:43usable. That's the idea here. Therefore, if anyone
- 30:48this word tis, if any certain one among the vessels,
- 30:53cleanse himself to clean thoroughly, purify or
- 30:59clean out himself from what is dishonorable,
- 31:03meaning his sin. Get your stuff right. That's
- 31:07what he's talking about up here. Let everyone
- 31:10who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.
- 31:13Clean up your junk. Notice how he continues in
- 31:17this thought. If he cleans up his stuff, he will
- 31:21be a vessel for honorable use. He will be usable
- 31:25and a valuable object for God, set apart as holy,
- 31:30meaning that God has set apart from profane things
- 31:34and dedicated for his use, meaning useful. He
- 31:39can use you when you clean up your trash. Can
- 31:41you imagine if I was shepherding and my life
- 31:45was a shipwreck and it was a disgusting mess.
- 31:48What kind of value or use would I be? They expect
- 31:53it from pastors, but God expects it from every
- 31:55one of his children, not just the leaders of
- 31:58the church. Lord knows we have a lot of them
- 32:01that are in question. So useful to the master
- 32:05of the house, meaning that the value, the vessels
- 32:09that are already in the house. are for his bidding.
- 32:12And if your life is dirty, he can't use you.
- 32:16Notice what he says here. Useful for the master
- 32:18of the house, ready for every good work. I guess
- 32:22if I was a dirty, messed up vessel, I might take
- 32:28it out back to go use it to dig something maybe.
- 32:32That'd be kind of nasty. Bring it back in and
- 32:35drink some soda out of it. Godly leaders grow
- 32:40and develop in loving God, his word, his ways,
- 32:44and his things. You want to be a vessel for honorable
- 32:47use? You want God to use you? You want to clean
- 32:50up your vessel? Here it is. This is the answer.
- 32:55Grow. and develop in God's love, his word, his
- 32:59ways, and his things. Look carefully then how
- 33:01you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making
- 33:03the best use of the time, because the days are
- 33:06evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand
- 33:10what the Lord's will is. Ephesians 5, 15 through
- 33:1317. What's his will? Be obedient. End of the
- 33:17chapter. Here we go. 22 through 26. So flee youthful
- 33:22passions. Epithume. Epe Thume means get rid of
- 33:27forbidden desires, cravings, and lusts. Young
- 33:30men, clean up your stuff. Do you know how many
- 33:35men are addicted to pornography? Just in this
- 33:38room. If we had 100 men, it'd be 99%. That's
- 33:43the average. 90%. Nine out of every 10 men. You're
- 33:47like, what? Do you know what it is for women?
- 33:51Almost the same. Pornography is not a man's issue.
- 33:54It's a lust issue. Now, it's hard. It's not easy.
- 33:58Flee youthful lusts. Get rid of forbidden desires,
- 34:03craving lusts, and pursue diako. Earnestly endeavor
- 34:08to acquire. Seek with all your heart righteousness,
- 34:12faith, love, and peace. Seek the kingdom of God
- 34:17and his righteousness. Notice it says that. Same
- 34:21idea here. Earnestly endeavor to acquire righteousness,
- 34:26faith, love, and peace along with those who call
- 34:29on the Lord, along with the true family of God
- 34:33from a pure heart. We do it together. We don't
- 34:36live life apart from each other. We live life
- 34:40with each other. When you struggle, I struggle.
- 34:45When you're hurting, I'm hurting. When you're
- 34:48in need, I'm in need. We do it together. never
- 34:53alone, have nothing to do, here it is again,
- 34:56with foolish, ignorant controversies. Why? You
- 35:01know they breed quarrels. I mean, why do you
- 35:04think people like, there's two things we don't
- 35:07talk about at the dinner table. Go ahead. Okay.
- 35:12Now think about that. Can't talk about religion.
- 35:17What else are Christians going to talk about?
- 35:24Makes no sense. Just don't get involved with
- 35:27dumb stuff. Talk about the things that matter.
- 35:30Why? Because the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome.
- 35:35This word quarrelsome means war with words. He
- 35:38must not be fighting over foolish things that
- 35:41don't matter because he wants to try to make
- 35:44a point. But he must be kind to everyone, able
- 35:48to teach. patiently enduring evil. In other words,
- 35:53patiently enduring the ills and wrongs of life.
- 35:56What kind of man should he be? He should correct.
- 36:01He should castigate. He should be molding the
- 36:04character of others by reproof and admonition.
- 36:08He should be castigating. He should be admonishing
- 36:11his opponents with gentleness, with the truth
- 36:14of the word of God. God may, perhaps, he may
- 36:17give them repentance. And repentance is one brought
- 36:21to repentance, and then God changes the mind.
- 36:26He brings them to a changed life, then the mind
- 36:30is changed. That's called sanctification. You
- 36:33don't change your mind about God and then come
- 36:35to Jesus. You know what, God? I really hate you.
- 36:38Oh man, you know what? I'm changing my mind.
- 36:40I just decided I think you're amazing. But that's
- 36:43what we were taught. Repentance is not the change
- 36:45of mind. Repentance is a change. Of the creature.
- 36:50The creature is no longer a creature of death
- 36:53and evil. He's been a creature of life. And as
- 36:56a result of being changed to life, made a new
- 36:59creature, God changes the mind. He renews the
- 37:02mind with the word of God. If you have any question
- 37:05about that, Romans chapter 12, verse 2. Okay.
- 37:09Now, here we go. This change of mind may lead
- 37:14to the knowledge of truth. May lead to faith.
- 37:19which was given, faith and truth, which was given
- 37:22through the partaking of faith. This whole change
- 37:25of the knowledge of the truth of God, of the
- 37:27truth of Christ, comes as a result of God giving
- 37:30his faith to the dead creature. It's interesting.
- 37:36Sort of like a spiritual shock pad, I guess.
- 37:40Now, what happens to these people? They may come
- 37:46to their senses, maybe. But you ever have people
- 37:49that you share the love of God with and you just,
- 37:50you look at them, they look at you like a deer
- 37:53in headlights and going, how come you can't understand
- 37:54this? I mean, you can't get any more simple than
- 37:57that. It's because they're not supposed to understand
- 37:59it. They may, not always, but may come to their
- 38:03senses and escape the snare of the devil. For
- 38:06those of us who have been on the conversation
- 38:08for several months on the issue of Satan, the
- 38:11devil, and the demons. This is an example of
- 38:14that. We talked about that he snares people.
- 38:18He entraps them. He puts a noose around them
- 38:21with false accusations and slander and lies.
- 38:27And as a result, all of those people who have
- 38:30been ensnared and entrapped and noosed by him
- 38:35are now out there teaching the same nonsense.
- 38:38And it gets taught from person to person. It's
- 38:41the same idea. As discipleship. If you have any
- 38:44question about that, Jesus says that to the Pharisees,
- 38:47does he not? What's he say to the Pharisees?
- 38:50He says, you are like your father, the? Okay.
- 38:56And they went about teaching. And that's exactly
- 38:58what these two men did. Called a lie. Ensnared
- 39:03people in lies. What happens when they're ensnared?
- 39:06Where after being captured, caught. by his lies,
- 39:12by his snares, by his entrapments to do his will,
- 39:17to go out and propagate the same stuff. Don't
- 39:21we see that going on in the world today? Propagating
- 39:24the same stuff, doing the same things. And we
- 39:28see that all the time, i .e. the Pope. When are
- 39:34God's people going to have the courage and strength
- 39:38and determination to stand solely on the truth
- 39:41and not argue about foolish things. It's very
- 39:45difficult and it's not easy, but God is good.
- 39:52God is good. All right. Father, I want to thank
- 39:57you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 39:59Thank you, Lord, that we got through this chapter.
- 40:01Thank you for all that you're doing in the lives
- 40:04of your people. draw us, help us, Lord, to seek
- 40:08righteousness, faith, love, to endeavor, to walk,
- 40:14and to learn, and to grow in truth. We praise
- 40:16you and thank you for your faithfulness, your
- 40:18goodness. In Jesus' name, amen.
