- 0:11Speaker 1: Hello, delicious friends, and welcome to a special bonus episode
- 0:15Speaker 1: of Who Did What Now? The history podcast that is
- 0:18Speaker 1: Not Your History Class for International Women's Day twenty twenty six,
- 0:25Speaker 1: with me, your host, Katie Charlewood, History Harlot, and reader
- 0:29Speaker 1: Oh Books. So this episode is going to be a
- 0:33Speaker 1: little different from what I normally do. So typically I
- 0:37Speaker 1: like to keep things at least twenty five years in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the past, because that's that's a full grown adult, like
- 0:44Speaker 1: that's something. However, as a millennial, I keep living through
- 0:48Speaker 1: many major historical events in which landscapes, nations, and societies
- 0:55Speaker 1: keep changing. And like I very nearly called this episode
- 1:00Speaker 1: like Who's Doing What Now? Just because I am picking
- 1:03Speaker 1: something that's happened within the last five to ten years,
- 1:06Speaker 1: something that I think is very important in a person
- 1:09Speaker 1: who I don't feel we have to wait till she
- 1:11Speaker 1: dies in order for us to talk about her. If
- 1:14Speaker 1: you are listening to this on day of release, it
- 1:16Speaker 1: is International Women's Day, and this is during Women's History months. Now,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about some more light and fluffy
- 1:24Speaker 1: things near the end of the month because we're going
- 1:27Speaker 1: to need that. But right now, I want to talk
- 1:29Speaker 1: about someone who could have very easily just crumpled hidden
- 1:37Speaker 1: and allowed the world to overlook what happened to her.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And it really shines a light on how society is
- 1:47Speaker 1: right now, how easy this is, and the challenges we've
- 1:51Speaker 1: faced together. Now, this is going to be difficult for
- 1:54Speaker 1: some of you to hear. I am going to be
- 1:56Speaker 1: talking about abuse, sexual assault, rape, just so many horrible,
- 2:03Speaker 1: vile things, murder. It's going to be awful. It's going
- 2:08Speaker 1: to be unpleasant, and it's not going to be easy
- 2:12Speaker 1: for any of us. If you are in any way sensitive,
- 2:15Speaker 1: feel free to skip away, exit stage left, and I
- 2:20Speaker 1: will see you next time. But for now, if you're
- 2:25Speaker 1: with me, I am going to quit much of al
- 2:27Speaker 1: Jabba and get my source on. Our sources are A
- 2:32Speaker 1: Hymn to Life by Joselle Pilico, Lges, Debile Baba by
- 2:39Speaker 1: Caroline Dorian Prose de Ville Demisan, Jean Pierre's his Big
- 2:48Speaker 1: comp Dominique Plico by Esther Basinger, Sisterhood at France's mass
- 2:54Speaker 1: rep Trial by Diane de Vignemont. And you know, I
- 2:59Speaker 1: have so many articles here. I have from Mandra, I
- 3:02Speaker 1: have BBC, The Guardian, The New York Times, there are
- 3:08Speaker 1: so many articles about this that you just need to
- 3:11Speaker 1: type in the Pilico reptril and you will find information.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But I always wanted to try and keep as close
- 3:18Speaker 1: to the source as possible, which is why my main
- 3:21Speaker 1: sources for this were both Gazelle's book and Caroline's book.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Now I use it in Comfortably Good. Then let's begin.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Gizelle Pellico was going through her usual nightly routine, setting
- 3:38Speaker 1: the table for breakfast the next morning, laying out cups, saucers,
- 3:43Speaker 1: other resorted crockery, her amazement plats, everything in its place.
- 3:49Speaker 1: She never liked the idea of rushing around in the
- 3:51Speaker 1: dark morning searching for the breakfast accoutrements, preferring instead to
- 3:57Speaker 1: start the day relaxed and organized. She carefully laid out
- 4:02Speaker 1: clothes for the next day for her husband of nearly
- 4:04Speaker 1: five decades, Dominique, a pair of trousers and a pink
- 4:09Speaker 1: top that their children had got him as a present.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Sixty eight year old Giselle liked being organized. She liked order,
- 4:18Speaker 1: especially with everything that had been happening to her lately.
- 4:21Speaker 1: She had been having a range of health concerns, memory issues,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and just so much more, and the order had helped
- 4:31Speaker 1: center her. On the morning of the second of November
- 4:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty, she and her husband, Dominique, had breakfast together
- 4:40Speaker 1: in their little yellow retirement bungalow. Then they went into
- 4:45Speaker 1: her car together and he drove them to the caprentrapolice
- 4:49Speaker 1: station in Avenue. Joselle thought that the worst part of
- 4:53Speaker 1: her day was her husband picking a jacket that absolutely
- 4:57Speaker 1: did not match the outfit that she had put together
- 4:59Speaker 1: for him. She told him so and he shrugged as
- 5:03Speaker 1: they walked out. You see, she thought that she was
- 5:09Speaker 1: going to talk to the police as a formality, perhaps
- 5:13Speaker 1: as support for her husband's crime from two months previous,
- 5:18Speaker 1: Back on the twelveth of September, when Giselle was away
- 5:21Speaker 1: visiting their daughter and grandchildren, Dominique had been caught upskirting
- 5:27Speaker 1: three women in the Le Clerk supermarket. Each one lodged
- 5:32Speaker 1: a complaint and Dominique was taken in. When she had
- 5:37Speaker 1: returned home from her visit, he broke down sobbing about
- 5:41Speaker 1: how he couldn't lose her. She was told of her
- 5:45Speaker 1: husband's actions. Well, he told her of his actions, and
- 5:49Speaker 1: naturally she wasn't happy about it. But to her this
- 5:54Speaker 1: situation could have been much worse. They had had some
- 5:59Speaker 1: trials and tribulations in their marriage and for Gaselle, Marge
- 6:04Speaker 1: was hard work and they had to work through it together.
- 6:09Speaker 1: On top of this, she knew what her husband had
- 6:11Speaker 1: gone through as a child, the challenges he faced growing up,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and she wanted to be there for him. She was calm, orderly,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and she told her husband, comforting him, letting him know
- 6:25Speaker 1: that she wasn't going to abandon him, and she stated
- 6:29Speaker 1: in no uncertain terms that he was going to have
- 6:32Speaker 1: to apologize to each of the women that he had upskirted,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and that he was going to go to therapy. She
- 6:39Speaker 1: made it absolutely clear that if this ever happened again,
- 6:43Speaker 1: that she would leave him, but for now she was
- 6:47Speaker 1: going to support her husband. And today the police had
- 6:51Speaker 1: specifically asked for her to come to the station with Dominique.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Naturally she would husband. They'd been together since they were teenagers.
- 7:03Speaker 1: He was a good man, and he had been really
- 7:06Speaker 1: taking care of her and her declining health in these
- 7:09Speaker 1: recent years since their retirement. He had been there for her,
- 7:13Speaker 1: and she wanted to be there for him. COVID precautions
- 7:18Speaker 1: were in full swing at the police station. The couple
- 7:21Speaker 1: put on their little blue face masks and made their
- 7:24Speaker 1: way inside. At the station, they were separated. Dominique was
- 7:30Speaker 1: taken first. Soon after, the gendarme came for her too.
- 7:35Speaker 1: They led her into Deputy Sergeant Pirette's room, where she
- 7:39Speaker 1: expected to join her husband, but he wasn't there. Instead,
- 7:45Speaker 1: she was sat opposite Piraut, who seemed calm but cautious.
- 7:50Speaker 1: There was a sense of unease in the air, and
- 7:54Speaker 1: Giselle didn't know what she was expecting to be asked,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but the questions coming out of the sergeant's mouth where odd.
- 8:05Speaker 1: She was far enough away that she could take off
- 8:07Speaker 1: her mask and perot. He started asking her some very
- 8:15Speaker 1: specific and to her bizarre questions like did she have friends?
- 8:22Speaker 1: Did they often invite people over? What was their nighttime routine?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Did she and her husband go to bed at the
- 8:30Speaker 1: same time? Did she take a lot of naps? How
- 8:34Speaker 1: did she feel when she woke up? They asked her
- 8:38Speaker 1: about Dominique's personality. They asked personal questions, very intimate questions
- 8:44Speaker 1: about her love life with her husband, like how often
- 8:48Speaker 1: did they have sex? Then a question so absurd it
- 8:55Speaker 1: shocked Giselle to hear it. They asked the sixty eight
- 9:00Speaker 1: old grandmother sitting at the table if she was into swinging.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The word no came out of her mouth, sharp and resolute.
- 9:11Speaker 1: For Gazelle, this was a preposterous question for her. There
- 9:16Speaker 1: was no other man for her than her husband, she
- 9:20Speaker 1: clearly informed them. For sex, there must be love. The
- 9:26Speaker 1: man seemed to hold his breath before showing her a photo,
- 9:30Speaker 1: then another, then another, photos of a woman in black
- 9:37Speaker 1: suspenders and risquale lingerie, a woman with a man on
- 9:42Speaker 1: top of her behind her. Photo after photo. Gazelle couldn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: understand why they were showing her these photos of this woman.
- 9:56Speaker 1: She couldn't quite process what was happening. She noticed things
- 10:00Speaker 1: in the pictures. She recognized her bed, her nightstand, her lamp,
- 10:07Speaker 1: her bedroom. She didn't recognize this woman with her bodies sunken,
- 10:14Speaker 1: her face almost melted into the bedding, limp restrained. Then
- 10:22Speaker 1: she did the unconscious woman in the pictures in her bed,
- 10:28Speaker 1: in her bedroom was her. She was being shown a
- 10:33Speaker 1: photo of her, unconscious with a stranger in her bedroom
- 10:39Speaker 1: raping her. Before she could really grasp what was happening,
- 10:46Speaker 1: the police kept putting photo after photo in front of her,
- 10:49Speaker 1: hundreds of them. Photos of men she did not recognize,
- 10:54Speaker 1: hundreds of photos of men's assaulting her as she lay there,
- 10:58Speaker 1: limp and lifeless. Out of the eighty three men in
- 11:02Speaker 1: these pictures, Gaselle only recognized two of them, a neighbor
- 11:07Speaker 1: who she would say hello when she met him in
- 11:10Speaker 1: town or have a chat in passing, as one does.
- 11:14Speaker 1: The other man was her husband of nearly fifty years,
- 11:19Speaker 1: Dominique Pilico. Here she was head swirling, heart racing as
- 11:27Speaker 1: her world came crumbling down around her, the life she
- 11:32Speaker 1: built with her husband for half a century, as she
- 11:36Speaker 1: was faced with the mounting evidence of abuse and assault
- 11:39Speaker 1: that she had suffered, all unbeknownst to her. The police
- 11:45Speaker 1: asked her if she wanted to press charges, and she
- 11:49Speaker 1: blotted out yes. Before she even fully took in the question,
- 11:55Speaker 1: the police took a strand of her hair. She signed
- 11:58Speaker 1: a statement acknowledging that she was a victim of assault,
- 12:02Speaker 1: outwardly agreeing to what was happening around her will Inside,
- 12:06Speaker 1: she was in disbelief. She kept thinking that this couldn't
- 12:11Speaker 1: be happening. This wasn't happening to her, This was not real,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and unfortunately for Chazelle, this was just the tip of
- 12:23Speaker 1: the iceberg. The depravity of the man that she thought
- 12:27Speaker 1: she knew would reach even more harrowing depths. Gazelle was
- 12:33Speaker 1: born Gazelle Marie Gailloux on the seventh of December nineteen
- 12:37Speaker 1: fifty two in Veningen, Germany, to Eve Gailloux, is soldier
- 12:42Speaker 1: in the French Army, and Jeanne Port. She was the
- 12:47Speaker 1: second child of the couple, with an older brother, Michel.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Her father had fought in the Second World War and
- 12:55Speaker 1: after was stationed in Germany at the time of Joselle's birth.
- 12:59Speaker 1: They returned to France when she was five to the Indre.
- 13:04Speaker 1: While others were moving out of the countryside, the Guillou's
- 13:07Speaker 1: they were relocating to it. Most migration was from the
- 13:12Speaker 1: cities and out to suburbia, but the family moved to
- 13:17Speaker 1: be close to her maternal grandparents and aunts and uncles.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Her father, being a military man, was way more often
- 13:26Speaker 1: than he was home her papa, but her papa he
- 13:31Speaker 1: loved his wife. Giselle would lose her mother when she
- 13:36Speaker 1: was nine years old. It was discovered that Jeanne had
- 13:40Speaker 1: cancer at twenty eight, a brain tumor. Jazelle's mother was
- 13:47Speaker 1: a source of constant joy in the guillous lives, always
- 13:51Speaker 1: wearing a smile, determined to fight the melancholy and tragedy
- 13:55Speaker 1: around her. Over time, she weakened, she got smaller and thinner,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but she would always try and bring light into the world.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Her breasts had basically disappeared, and so she would put
- 14:13Speaker 1: oranges under her blouse to make her sister and told
- 14:17Speaker 1: her laugh. She never cried, not once in front of
- 14:23Speaker 1: her children, something that stayed with Chazelle. The cancer spread,
- 14:30Speaker 1: eating await her until she died at age thirty five.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Her father, he had returned home when his wife's health
- 14:39Speaker 1: was declining. He was there when she passed. Jazelle's mother
- 14:46Speaker 1: died with her eyes open, and so her father closed them.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Chazelle was nine. She thought her mother was asleep, and
- 14:55Speaker 1: she grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, trying
- 14:58Speaker 1: to wake her up, but she was gone. Her father
- 15:05Speaker 1: broke down. He was not a man prone to tears,
- 15:09Speaker 1: often strong, often stoic, but now with the love of
- 15:12Speaker 1: his life her loss, he cried the kind of gut wrenching, guttural,
- 15:19Speaker 1: ugly cry when you lose someone who is so important
- 15:22Speaker 1: to you. He was in pain, he was in sorrow,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and her brother too. He was also struggling with her
- 15:34Speaker 1: mother's death, and so Joselle, at the tender age of nine,
- 15:38Speaker 1: decided that she had to be strong to be there
- 15:41Speaker 1: for them and to comfort them. See this was not
- 15:47Speaker 1: the first death in Joselle's childhood. Her younger cousin had
- 15:52Speaker 1: died previously after a severe scolding accident, after which her
- 15:58Speaker 1: grandmother adorned mourning garb, wearing black for the rest of
- 16:02Speaker 1: her life. Life with her grandparents peasants from the andree
- 16:09Speaker 1: A childhood spent chasing after a wheel barrow with her
- 16:14Speaker 1: aunt and her cousins just across a meadow. This was
- 16:18Speaker 1: all things considered a happy childhood, and after the war
- 16:23Speaker 1: in Algeria Eve's garieu he would take a job with
- 16:27Speaker 1: the war ministry in Paris, and so she would leave
- 16:32Speaker 1: their home in the shadow of the Chateau d'as le ferent.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Her father would eventually remarry when Giselle was twelve. Jaselle
- 16:43Speaker 1: and her brother Michele, they did not go to the wedding.
- 16:48Speaker 1: In fairness, her father didn't let them go to weddings
- 16:51Speaker 1: or funerals. He did not want his children to witness
- 16:55Speaker 1: that coffin going in the ground, and he did not
- 16:58Speaker 1: want them to witness him getting married, so he married
- 17:04Speaker 1: a widow, Marie Josephine, and Gazelle she would not go
- 17:09Speaker 1: on with her stepmother. She found her strict, harsh, and cruel.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Now this led to tensions in their home because growing
- 17:18Speaker 1: up she never received a compliment from her stepmother, who
- 17:23Speaker 1: kept telling her that she was fat and looked like
- 17:25Speaker 1: a cart horse while her own daughter was a race horse.
- 17:31Speaker 1: She would hide butter in coffee so that Michele and
- 17:35Speaker 1: Gizelle could not have any like she was an almond
- 17:39Speaker 1: mom before amon mom existed. She would hide apples in
- 17:43Speaker 1: the washing machine. Who hides apples in a washing machine?
- 17:47Speaker 1: She complained they were too fat and they needed to
- 17:51Speaker 1: eat less. And then she made sure that they always
- 17:54Speaker 1: ate their lunch at the cafeteria at their school. She
- 17:56Speaker 1: didn't want them coming home for lunch. She made them
- 17:59Speaker 1: stay way. She would also do like we need sneaky
- 18:06Speaker 1: sleek at abusive things like turn off the hot water
- 18:10Speaker 1: when Gazelle was in the middle of washing her hair,
- 18:15Speaker 1: like they said that you know, oh, they were wasting
- 18:17Speaker 1: so much money, and she was in there for too long.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But like when you're used to having to boil your
- 18:24Speaker 1: water to wash your hair, you know I say boil
- 18:28Speaker 1: water when you put the boiler on right, you know
- 18:31Speaker 1: that you have a limited amount of time, and so
- 18:34Speaker 1: you get good at cleaning yourself quickly. Is someone who
- 18:39Speaker 1: used to live in a little cottage, I can assure
- 18:41Speaker 1: you I can have a three minute shower. I can
- 18:46Speaker 1: also have a thirty minute shower. Like listen, sometimes you
- 18:51Speaker 1: just want to come out prune. Okay. But for Gazelle,
- 18:57Speaker 1: the last time she spent with her stepmother the better,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and so she descended that during the school holidays she
- 19:05Speaker 1: would get a job. So at fourteen she worked in
- 19:08Speaker 1: a factory in Millimonte, assembling phone cases, so like telephone
- 19:13Speaker 1: cases for actual big telephones like solid ones. Will her
- 19:20Speaker 1: brother assembled funeral wraiths. At sixteen, she was nannying for
- 19:27Speaker 1: a wealthy family, a French mother American father, and they
- 19:32Speaker 1: lived on the Boulevard de General coni A Nui Sarceine,
- 19:36Speaker 1: and so she was there during the school breaks. The
- 19:40Speaker 1: family were so impressed with Gaselle and the way that
- 19:43Speaker 1: she cared for their daughter that they wanted to take
- 19:47Speaker 1: her on full time and so they offered her a
- 19:50Speaker 1: full time position with them. This would involve having to
- 19:54Speaker 1: travel with them to their various homes in Paris, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Hawaii,
- 20:00Speaker 1: sorry Honolulu in Hawaii, and her father just refused to
- 20:05Speaker 1: let her go. Was he being protective? Was he worried
- 20:08Speaker 1: that this oper life was going to be dangerous for
- 20:11Speaker 1: her or did he just want to keep her close?
- 20:17Speaker 1: So either way, he put the kaibosh on this adventure.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And this this was a turning point for Gazelle. She
- 20:26Speaker 1: had been prevented from traveling. Her stepmother was demanding three
- 20:30Speaker 1: hundred and fifty francs for room and board and that
- 20:33Speaker 1: was a month. Now, Now that she was earning a
- 20:36Speaker 1: little money, and so Gazelle decided that she was going
- 20:39Speaker 1: to leave school altogether and work full time and gain
- 20:42Speaker 1: her independence. Gazelle managed to get a jaw working as
- 20:47Speaker 1: a secretary at a printing press that made bank checks,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and when she was nineteen and nineteen seventy one, she
- 20:55Speaker 1: returned to the indret to visit her aunt. And that
- 20:59Speaker 1: is where she met at the shy boy with long
- 21:02Speaker 1: curly hair and a Bretzon sweater, and he was working
- 21:05Speaker 1: for them for Gazelle. This was love at first sight.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Unlike the boys of Paris, he had no airs or graces,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and he was at her aunt Andrea's more often than
- 21:19Speaker 1: he was at his own home. He stayed for dinner
- 21:23Speaker 1: and that was it for her. Over the coming months,
- 21:26Speaker 1: she would visit nearly every weekend to be with him.
- 21:30Speaker 1: She would come back with assorted clonognes and swearers from Paris,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and they courted for nine months before they slept together
- 21:39Speaker 1: for the first time. Chaselle never wanted to rush into
- 21:43Speaker 1: a sexual relationship because for Gazelle, for sex, there must
- 21:48Speaker 1: be love. Now. He was a bit more ready to
- 21:53Speaker 1: go than she was, but he didn't pressure her. He
- 21:56Speaker 1: waited until she was ready, which shocked her when she
- 22:01Speaker 1: looked back after everything that would come to light about him.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Two years after they first met Dominicuan, Gazelle wed and Jazelle,
- 22:12Speaker 1: like was the norm of the time, took her husband's
- 22:14Speaker 1: surname and became Gazelle Bilico. They married in April nineteen
- 22:20Speaker 1: seventy three and moved to Renois, near Paris. They would
- 22:25Speaker 1: go on to have three children together, David, Caroline, and Florian.
- 22:32Speaker 1: The Pelico children would go on to say that for
- 22:35Speaker 1: the most part, their childhoods were normal, and that Dominique
- 22:39Speaker 1: was a doting father who loved his wife and kids.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But it's easy to look back at her home life
- 22:45Speaker 1: and see it more idyllic than it actually was. Both
- 22:51Speaker 1: Pellicoe parents worked, Although Gazelle certainly had more stable employment
- 22:56Speaker 1: than her husband. She took him off to raise the children,
- 23:01Speaker 1: the first two so David and Caroline, but financially she
- 23:07Speaker 1: needed to work to keep them afloat a logistics manager,
- 23:12Speaker 1: a bookkeeper upgrading to HR something that fitted her stellar
- 23:17Speaker 1: organizational skills. In management, she would train an upskill, sometimes treading,
- 23:25Speaker 1: just to keep their heads above water. When Florian was born,
- 23:29Speaker 1: she couldn't afford to take time off work to raise
- 23:31Speaker 1: him other than her maternity leave. When it was over,
- 23:36Speaker 1: she went straight back into the office. Meanwhile, Dominique seemed
- 23:42Speaker 1: to bounce from job to job. He tried his hand
- 23:46Speaker 1: at being a real estate agent, but he was not
- 23:48Speaker 1: a very good one. He had trained as an electrician.
- 23:52Speaker 1: He was always good with gismo's and gadgets, so he
- 23:55Speaker 1: was at that for a bit before joining the EDF
- 23:58Speaker 1: as a salesman. So Gazelle also worked for DF and
- 24:06Speaker 1: he's there for a while. And this didn't last too
- 24:09Speaker 1: long either. He ended up starting his own company, which
- 24:14Speaker 1: shockingly went bankrupt. Gazelle effectively is not only the breadwinner
- 24:23Speaker 1: for the family, but she is the one keeping everything
- 24:26Speaker 1: in play. She is basically balancing her books. She's being
- 24:31Speaker 1: frugal to ensure that they can survive. Like She didn't
- 24:36Speaker 1: want her children to go through the same poverty that
- 24:40Speaker 1: they were struggling with, and so she ensured that they
- 24:44Speaker 1: went to a private school, and this was costing a
- 24:48Speaker 1: pretty penny, but they did without in order to make
- 24:52Speaker 1: sure that their children had a better life. Gizelle was
- 24:58Speaker 1: the only one with a kincier job, and Dominique's terrible
- 25:03Speaker 1: financial skills resulted in bailiff's showing up at the house
- 25:06Speaker 1: with the police to remove every piece of furniture except
- 25:11Speaker 1: from the children's beds. Caroline would have been I think
- 25:16Speaker 1: twelve when this's happened. The financial stress, while it put
- 25:21Speaker 1: pressure on their marriage, Dominique's debts forced them to struggle
- 25:26Speaker 1: in Giselle staying by her husband's side through these financial
- 25:30Speaker 1: difficulties showed the couple to be stronger together, with friends
- 25:35Speaker 1: and family commenting on just how great their marriage was. However,
- 25:43Speaker 1: the children did mention that at least once in their
- 25:45Speaker 1: formative years that they saw their father act violently towards
- 25:49Speaker 1: their mother, grabbing her by her shirt collar and pinning
- 25:53Speaker 1: her against a wall. This fleeting moment of violence Ascidy
- 26:01Speaker 1: Joselle completely trusted her husband. He was the love of
- 26:05Speaker 1: her life since she was nineteen. He took the kids
- 26:08Speaker 1: to school and picked them up to dance classes. He
- 26:13Speaker 1: helped them through times of strife, emotional turmoil. He was involved,
- 26:20Speaker 1: He was communicating, He was open. He was involved to
- 26:26Speaker 1: the outside world, even from them from the inside when
- 26:30Speaker 1: they were loving it to him, to them, he was
- 26:34Speaker 1: a good father. He was a good man. As time
- 26:39Speaker 1: went on, Giselle and Dominique became grandparents. They spoke to
- 26:44Speaker 1: their children and grandchildren all the time they visited. They
- 26:48Speaker 1: played football and cycled. When the Pelicos retired in twenty thirteen,
- 26:53Speaker 1: they moved south to the town of Mazan in Provence.
- 26:58Speaker 1: It was no surprise that whenever the schooldays rolled around
- 27:01Speaker 1: that the Pilico children and grandchildren would migrate to this
- 27:04Speaker 1: beautiful area to spend time together. Family time for sure,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but also the poll that they would get their strokes in.
- 27:12Speaker 1: They would have dancing competitions and play board games like
- 27:15Speaker 1: Trivial Pursuit. Then, of course there were the pretty lavender
- 27:20Speaker 1: field which may or may not be full of very
- 27:22Speaker 1: itchy beasties, the Marche gardain, and of course the fete
- 27:27Speaker 1: that would run in the summer. It was idyllic. These cherished,
- 27:34Speaker 1: happy memories of their lives would be referred to as
- 27:39Speaker 1: a comedy of tranquility by Gaselle and Dominique's daughter Caroline.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Looking back on those happy memories, they're all tinted now.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Three years before the couple's relocation to Provence, Dominique was
- 27:57Speaker 1: arrested in a supermarket for upskirting women. Yes this happened before.
- 28:02Speaker 1: He had been caught filming under women and girls skirts
- 28:05Speaker 1: with a pen camera by security guards. The police find
- 28:11Speaker 1: Dominique a grand total of one hundred euro and sent
- 28:14Speaker 1: him on his way. Not quite. They did take a
- 28:19Speaker 1: sample of his DNA, which was dandal procedure, and then
- 28:23Speaker 1: they let him go. Gazelle saw this act as a
- 28:28Speaker 1: blip in their marriage, something to work on and get over.
- 28:34Speaker 1: She didn't want to tell the children. She didn't want
- 28:36Speaker 1: them to to suffer through this or be embarrassed. And
- 28:39Speaker 1: so she decided that they were going to work through this.
- 28:45Speaker 1: He was going to go to therapy and you know,
- 28:49Speaker 1: get better was the goal, you know. And she knew
- 28:53Speaker 1: what Gazelle had gone through in his life, in his childhood,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and it made it easy for her to rationalize his actions.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I think at that point, in comparison to her childhood,
- 29:07Speaker 1: Dominique Pilico's childhood was bleak. Jaselle grew up surrounded by
- 29:22Speaker 1: love and compassion, whereas Dominique didn't have that same affection
- 29:27Speaker 1: in his household. When she lost a mother at nine
- 29:31Speaker 1: years old, her family were there for her. When Dominic
- 29:36Speaker 1: was nine, he had been assaulted by a male nurse
- 29:39Speaker 1: when he was in hospital. On top of this, his
- 29:43Speaker 1: family dynamics were not pleasant. His mother, Juliet, was originally
- 29:48Speaker 1: married to his uncle Andrea, who just abandoned her one
- 29:52Speaker 1: day before their divorce was finalized. She was already in
- 29:57Speaker 1: a relationship with Andrea's younger brother, Dennis Pellico, who was
- 30:02Speaker 1: ten years old. Junior Deniy was aggressive and loud. Dominique's
- 30:09Speaker 1: brother Joel was away training in medicine. Meanwhile, Dominique was
- 30:14Speaker 1: seen as a lowly electrician. Their half sister, Genevieve, had
- 30:21Speaker 1: gotten married and left that house as soon as she could.
- 30:26Speaker 1: The house was cramped. One bedroom was for Dominique's grandfather,
- 30:32Speaker 1: a war veteran suffering from Parkinson's. Dominique shared a room
- 30:37Speaker 1: with Nicole, a ward from the state that had learning difficulties.
- 30:43Speaker 1: She was brought into the household when she was five
- 30:45Speaker 1: years old. Denie and Juliette would sleep in the living room.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Joel and Dominique had tried to get Nicole taken out
- 30:58Speaker 1: of their family's care and brought so we're safer. They
- 31:02Speaker 1: tried to get social services or the French equivalent, to
- 31:07Speaker 1: get her away for her own safety because for years
- 31:12Speaker 1: Deny Perico, their father, had been sexually assaulting the girl.
- 31:18Speaker 1: After the death of juliet the fifty eight year old
- 31:21Speaker 1: Dennis would officially announce his relationship with twenty eight year
- 31:26Speaker 1: old Nicole, the girl he was responsible for since she
- 31:31Speaker 1: was five years old, The girl who, when Giselle met
- 31:35Speaker 1: her for the very first time, was still holding on
- 31:39Speaker 1: to a teddy bear. Jazelle's childhood was a happy one
- 31:46Speaker 1: in the countryside, so it doesn't seem like much of
- 31:50Speaker 1: a stretch to think that a move to the Picturesque
- 31:53Speaker 1: Provence was for her benefit so that her final years
- 31:57Speaker 1: could be as joyful as her early ones. But this
- 32:00Speaker 1: move was very much Dominique's idea and did put around
- 32:05Speaker 1: four hundred miles that's about six hundred and forty three
- 32:08Speaker 1: kilometers between the couple and their children. Before picking this spot,
- 32:15Speaker 1: he had suggested other rural areas, but Gazelle was determined
- 32:19Speaker 1: to have access to a train, especially a high speed
- 32:22Speaker 1: train that could get her to and from the children
- 32:26Speaker 1: and grandchildren so easy travel. They had been working from
- 32:32Speaker 1: young ages since they were teenagers, and so Gazelle thought
- 32:35Speaker 1: that this this was going to be the time of
- 32:38Speaker 1: their lives, that they were going to relax and enjoy
- 32:41Speaker 1: their sunset years. But not long after the move to
- 32:45Speaker 1: Mazin and Avignon, Gazelle's health took a turn for the worse.
- 32:51Speaker 1: She had always been very particular about her health and
- 32:55Speaker 1: well being. She didn't smoke, nor did she over indulge
- 32:58Speaker 1: when it came to alcohol. She wasn't a big drinker.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Now she did like keeping fit and going for walks,
- 33:05Speaker 1: especially with her bulldog, Lancon. That's what a la compain
- 33:11Speaker 1: is for, was it not. She was in her sixties
- 33:14Speaker 1: now and she was having bouts of memory loss. Entire
- 33:19Speaker 1: conversations are days lost. She would forget conversations that she
- 33:24Speaker 1: had with her children. She spoke on the telephone often
- 33:28Speaker 1: to them, so she didn't know if she'd said goodbye
- 33:31Speaker 1: to them, what they talked about. She forgot films that
- 33:35Speaker 1: she had watched the night before. One day, she woke
- 33:39Speaker 1: up with a haircut. Panicked, she raced to see her hairdresser,
- 33:45Speaker 1: who informed her that she had been there the day
- 33:47Speaker 1: before and she didn't remember any of it. Her hairdresser
- 33:55Speaker 1: was actually very glad to see her, because she said
- 33:59Speaker 1: that when she was cutting Gazelle's hair that she seemed
- 34:02Speaker 1: to be blank, like, staring forward, not quite with it,
- 34:08Speaker 1: and she was glad to see that she was okay.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Gazelle's mother died from a brain tumor, and so this
- 34:18Speaker 1: was Gazelle's first thought. Her initial wave of fear was
- 34:23Speaker 1: she going to waste away and die a cormomo, leaving
- 34:26Speaker 1: behind devastated children and her husband. Perhaps it was Alzheimer's
- 34:32Speaker 1: or dementia conditions that were being highlighted more than ever.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Gazelle was terrified that she was losing her mind, she
- 34:40Speaker 1: was losing time, and Dominique he was there for her
- 34:45Speaker 1: throughout this ordeal. He made the appointments for her, the scans,
- 34:49Speaker 1: the screens, and he held her hand through all of it.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Each scan came up clear, no tumor in her brain,
- 34:57Speaker 1: no shadows on the X ray. The bouts of amnesia, though,
- 35:03Speaker 1: were only one issue. She was exhausted, as if suffering
- 35:06Speaker 1: from chronic fatigue. One of her arms stopped working properly,
- 35:11Speaker 1: she would just lose control of it. Then there were
- 35:15Speaker 1: urinary and gynecological issues. Her bladder would just empty without warning.
- 35:21Speaker 1: She'd wake up in the morning her pajamas soaked, or
- 35:25Speaker 1: she would suddenly get a feeling like her waters had broken.
- 35:29Speaker 1: She'd been through that experience three times before, so she
- 35:32Speaker 1: knew what that was like. She was getting other pains
- 35:36Speaker 1: and so she was visiting neurologists and gynecologists and at
- 35:40Speaker 1: one point she had an inflamed cervix and they wanted
- 35:44Speaker 1: to just stop having sex. Joselle felt that she and
- 35:50Speaker 1: her husband had a healthy sex life, nothing too much
- 35:54Speaker 1: better than most couples that had been together for five decades.
- 35:58Speaker 1: They were intimate five maybe six times month, always initiated
- 36:02Speaker 1: by Dominique. He always had a higher sex drive than
- 36:04Speaker 1: she did, and that was normal to her. Men were
- 36:08Speaker 1: more carnally inclined than women. To her, how things were,
- 36:12Speaker 1: he always respected her boundaries. If there was something she
- 36:15Speaker 1: didn't want to do, he wouldn't badge or pest her,
- 36:19Speaker 1: and no was a no. So when the kind ecological
- 36:22Speaker 1: issues started that she had no explanation for, Dominique accused
- 36:27Speaker 1: her of having an affair. She vehemently denied it. The
- 36:31Speaker 1: couple had both had romantic galliances in the past. They
- 36:35Speaker 1: had affairs, they were brief, and they were decades before.
- 36:38Speaker 1: But with her blackouts and memory problems, she really had
- 36:41Speaker 1: to question had she slept with someone else. Had she
- 36:45Speaker 1: done it and not remembered. One night, she awoke to
- 36:48Speaker 1: find Dominique having sex with her. He told her that
- 36:52Speaker 1: he thought she was awakened to just go back to sleep.
- 36:55Speaker 1: At the time, she wrote it off as just another
- 36:57Speaker 1: memory blackout incident. Trusted her husband. It never really occurred
- 37:02Speaker 1: to her that anything nefarious was going on. Her children
- 37:07Speaker 1: were becoming concerned. Her scans led no clothes as to
- 37:10Speaker 1: what had been happening to her. In twenty eighteen, Florian,
- 37:14Speaker 1: her youngest, was visiting his parents when he saw it
- 37:17Speaker 1: happen right in front of him. No sooner had Chazelle
- 37:21Speaker 1: sat down to dinner than both her elbows gave way
- 37:24Speaker 1: and her body hung there like a rag doll, staring
- 37:27Speaker 1: blankly as though in a trance. Florian and surprisingly freaks out.
- 37:34Speaker 1: He's worried about his mummo Dominique's concerned too, but tells
- 37:38Speaker 1: his son that this happened from time to time when
- 37:40Speaker 1: she had too much activity. So not only is he's
- 37:44Speaker 1: of brushing it off dismissing it, but he's blaming this
- 37:47Speaker 1: whole incident on Florian and his family being around and
- 37:50Speaker 1: draining Gazelle of energy. He suggested they put her to
- 37:55Speaker 1: bed and that she'd be well in the morning, but
- 37:58Speaker 1: Dominique was a little worried, so he was drying to
- 38:02Speaker 1: knock her out. He had just given her a dose
- 38:05Speaker 1: that kicked in way too early. The following year, Jaselle
- 38:10Speaker 1: was so concerned by these amnesiaic bursts that she stopped driving.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Worried she'd be a danger on the road. She stopped
- 38:18Speaker 1: taking the train by herself because she was afraid she'd
- 38:21Speaker 1: miss hers stop. Dominique became her chauffeur, driving her to
- 38:26Speaker 1: all of her appointments. He's playing the part of the
- 38:29Speaker 1: doting husband, her rock. From an outside perspective, he's so
- 38:33Speaker 1: considerate and caring. But what he's doing here is he's
- 38:38Speaker 1: isolating her, which brings us to the upskirting incident in
- 38:42Speaker 1: September twenty twenty, when Gizelle is on the ildelous An
- 38:47Speaker 1: Island on the Atlantic off the coast of France, where
- 38:50Speaker 1: her daughter Caroline and son in Lapierre had a holiday home.
- 38:54Speaker 1: She often went to help look after her grandchildren during
- 38:56Speaker 1: the breaks from school. She was mamin U the trail Grandma.
- 39:01Speaker 1: That weekend, she had been helping with her grandson Maxim
- 39:04Speaker 1: when she got a call from Dominique sounding agitated. He
- 39:08Speaker 1: said he'd lost his mobile phone and he had to
- 39:11Speaker 1: get a new code to activate one. It was sent
- 39:13Speaker 1: to her mobile and he needed it. She obliged, confused
- 39:18Speaker 1: by his sudden disarray. In mid October, the following month,
- 39:23Speaker 1: she had visited her son David and his wife Selene.
- 39:26Speaker 1: He was due to undergo minor surgery and so she
- 39:29Speaker 1: was there to look after grandson Nathan and her granddaughters,
- 39:32Speaker 1: the twins Clements and Chalise. It was here that she
- 39:36Speaker 1: received a phone call from the Capentra Police. They wanted
- 39:39Speaker 1: to interview her. She informed them that she will be
- 39:42Speaker 1: back on October twenty first, but they bluntly informed her
- 39:45Speaker 1: that they would have to see her on November second.
- 39:49Speaker 1: She thought it was odd that the police wanted to
- 39:50Speaker 1: interview her. Her husband had made a foolish mistake, one
- 39:56Speaker 1: that he was going to make up for and apologize
- 39:59Speaker 1: and go to therapy. Little did she know that in
- 40:03Speaker 1: less than a month, she would be shown hundreds of
- 40:05Speaker 1: photographs evidence of the abuse perpetrated by her husband and
- 40:10Speaker 1: strangers that he invited into their home over the last
- 40:14Speaker 1: ten years. After that day at the police station, she
- 40:23Speaker 1: was told that she shouldn't be alone. An officer drove
- 40:26Speaker 1: her to her house, the yellow provincial single story home
- 40:29Speaker 1: that she was planning to spend her retirement years in,
- 40:34Speaker 1: and she was on autopilot. She washed Dominique's pajamas and
- 40:38Speaker 1: put them on the clothes line to dry. She ported
- 40:40Speaker 1: about cleaning, tidying, just keeping herself busy, having to keep
- 40:45Speaker 1: herself busy until her neighbor, Sylvie, came around just to
- 40:48Speaker 1: be with her. The police officer had returned later to
- 40:52Speaker 1: make sure that there was someone with her. He seemed relieved. However,
- 40:57Speaker 1: that was not the only reason for the visit. Needed
- 41:00Speaker 1: another sample of her hair. The police required more strands
- 41:04Speaker 1: of her hair to test for chemicals. Basically, hair can
- 41:10Speaker 1: show if you have been receiving drugs for a long
- 41:14Speaker 1: period of time, and they would show and it would
- 41:19Speaker 1: come out in court. One by one. Gazelle called her children.
- 41:24Speaker 1: This was news that she wanted to break herself. She
- 41:28Speaker 1: was concerned about telling her daughter. Caroline, the middle child,
- 41:31Speaker 1: was what Gazelle referred to as highly strung. Where Gazelle
- 41:37Speaker 1: was composed and reserved, Caroline was the opposite. Her emotions
- 41:41Speaker 1: came to the surface and she had a temper. She
- 41:45Speaker 1: made sure Pierre was with her when she told her
- 41:47Speaker 1: what had happened to her. Sylvie's husband, unaware of what
- 41:51Speaker 1: the right thing to do was in this situation, had
- 41:53Speaker 1: brought over a bottle of champagne and put it in
- 41:56Speaker 1: the fridge just in case. Not much of a drinker,
- 42:00Speaker 1: but Gazelle polished off that glass of champagne. For once
- 42:05Speaker 1: she needed it. She spoke to her children, explaining that
- 42:11Speaker 1: their father drugged her, raped her, and helped others rape her,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and that he was taken by police. David, her eldest son,
- 42:21Speaker 1: only responded with I have to go, mamma. She found
- 42:26Speaker 1: out later that he had hung up and vomited. Caroline
- 42:31Speaker 1: screamed a shriek. She said it was like the howl
- 42:35Speaker 1: of a wounded animal. Florian, the youngest, was calm asking
- 42:41Speaker 1: how and where she was. Giselle told him that she
- 42:45Speaker 1: was staying in Sylvie's guest room, that she wasn't alone,
- 42:49Speaker 1: and once he hung up the phone, Florian collapsed in
- 42:52Speaker 1: shock in Sylvie's guest room. Gazelle could not sleep, rest
- 42:58Speaker 1: was not on the agenda, and her three children and
- 43:00Speaker 1: kept calling, checking in worried every fifteen minutes. It was
- 43:05Speaker 1: during one of those calls that Caroline said to her
- 43:07Speaker 1: mother that the memory lapses, the blackouts, they must be
- 43:10Speaker 1: connected to the assaults, something that Chazelle had not put
- 43:14Speaker 1: together yet. When Dominique had been caught taking photos under
- 43:19Speaker 1: women's skirts in the Laclerk supermarket, because this was a
- 43:23Speaker 1: repeat offense, the police had seized his phone and computer,
- 43:28Speaker 1: upon which they found over twenty thousand images and videos,
- 43:31Speaker 1: all of which had been neatly organized in a file
- 43:33Speaker 1: labeled abuse. While Gazelle was trying to piece together the
- 43:39Speaker 1: fragments of her life, the police were working on identifying
- 43:42Speaker 1: the eighty three men that were in the photos. It
- 43:47Speaker 1: didn't take them long to discover just how exactly Dominique
- 43:50Speaker 1: found these men. He was a frequent flyer, if you will,
- 43:54Speaker 1: of the Absolute Trash Fire Seventh Ring of Hell website
- 43:59Speaker 1: Cocoa f a site that was eventually shut down in
- 44:03Speaker 1: June twenty twenty four thanks to a combined task force
- 44:06Speaker 1: from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania and the Netherlands. It
- 44:11Speaker 1: was basically a chats out without registration or moderation. All
- 44:15Speaker 1: you had to do was put in your age, gender,
- 44:18Speaker 1: good Bostel, and a nickname. It was a fan of
- 44:23Speaker 1: predators used to coordinate homophobic attacks, gang rapes, racist attacks,
- 44:27Speaker 1: child sexual abuse, connected to over twenty thousand police cases
- 44:32Speaker 1: and judicial proceedings. Dominique under the pseudonym Mark Dorian. His
- 44:40Speaker 1: favorite forum was assans and Suites, which translates to without
- 44:45Speaker 1: her knowing. On this forum, men would share stories about
- 44:48Speaker 1: this incredibly specific form of sexual abuse, drug facilitated sexual assault,
- 44:54Speaker 1: and domestic chemical submission. They bragged about how they drugged
- 44:59Speaker 1: and raped their and Dominique Pelago was posting on this
- 45:04Speaker 1: forum as early as July twenty eleven, two years before
- 45:08Speaker 1: they moved to Masan. He posted openly about how much
- 45:12Speaker 1: he enjoyed what he called rape mode. He waxed on
- 45:16Speaker 1: about how he drugged his wife with sleeping pills and
- 45:19Speaker 1: he would do all the things that she would never
- 45:21Speaker 1: have agreed to. He would film these assaults and post
- 45:25Speaker 1: them on the forum. How long had he been practicing
- 45:29Speaker 1: to get the mix in dose right, because that's not
- 45:31Speaker 1: a first time thing. He would mix sleeping pills with axelotics,
- 45:37Speaker 1: anti anxiety meds in the house they would later find viagra, zobodem,
- 45:42Speaker 1: and laurazepam. He would also ensure that he mixed in
- 45:48Speaker 1: a little bit of muscle relaxant. He made sure to
- 45:51Speaker 1: give it to her the day after the attacks. I
- 45:55Speaker 1: have a theory that he mixed in a little bit
- 45:57Speaker 1: with everything anyway, just to ensure that she didn't have
- 46:01Speaker 1: internal bruising. He tried out different combinations over the yells,
- 46:05Speaker 1: and he hid them in the garage in boots and socks,
- 46:09Speaker 1: hundreds and hundreds of pills. He ordered four hundred and
- 46:13Speaker 1: fifty pills in one year, Like how did this not
- 46:17Speaker 1: raise any flax? Gaselle remember occasions where Monsieur Pinicle gave
- 46:23Speaker 1: her a drink that was odd, like a cocktail with
- 46:25Speaker 1: a weird test or a beer that was glowing green.
- 46:30Speaker 1: When she commented on them being weird, he would just
- 46:32Speaker 1: dump them down the sink. His favorite concoction he would
- 46:37Speaker 1: crush and mix into her mashed potato, her coffee, her
- 46:41Speaker 1: glass of wine, carefully tailoring the amounts to give the
- 46:45Speaker 1: desired effect without too many side effects. It's no surprise
- 46:50Speaker 1: that when Gazelle was well and truly through the menopause,
- 46:53Speaker 1: that this starts escalating. They moved to Mazan. He drugs her,
- 47:00Speaker 1: he rapes her, and then offers to let other men
- 47:03Speaker 1: rape his drug induced comato's wife. He'd contact them through
- 47:09Speaker 1: the forum and then make arrangements vias skipe. He'd tell
- 47:14Speaker 1: them to wait in a school car park near by
- 47:16Speaker 1: until sending them they all clear. They would come to
- 47:20Speaker 1: his house and dress in the kitchen as to not
- 47:22Speaker 1: leave any clothes in the bedroom. They couldn't wear after
- 47:26Speaker 1: shave or cologne. They were allowed to smoke beforehand. They
- 47:30Speaker 1: had to wash their hands with warm water lest they
- 47:32Speaker 1: wake her up with a cold touch. If she moved
- 47:35Speaker 1: or seemed to be waking up, they had to leave.
- 47:39Speaker 1: He never made any of these men wear a condom,
- 47:43Speaker 1: even when he knew they had h ivy. He never
- 47:46Speaker 1: took payment for this abuse. He just did it for
- 47:48Speaker 1: his own enjoyment. He would dress Joselle in lingerie that
- 47:53Speaker 1: she would refuse to wear. Afterwards, he cleaned her body
- 47:56Speaker 1: and changed her clothes so that she would be none
- 47:59Speaker 1: the wiser. The gendame identified over two hundred counts of
- 48:04Speaker 1: rape perpetrated by at least ninety two men. Only three
- 48:09Speaker 1: men that arrived and saw Chazelle unconscious left, but they
- 48:15Speaker 1: didn't report this. They saw what was being done to her,
- 48:18Speaker 1: but they just left her there. Out of the ninety
- 48:22Speaker 1: two men in the files, the police were able to
- 48:25Speaker 1: identify eighty three separate men, but could only track down
- 48:32Speaker 1: about fifty two of them. Many of the men claimed
- 48:37Speaker 1: that they believed that Gazelle was in on it, that
- 48:39Speaker 1: she liked to be sedated, or that she was pretending
- 48:42Speaker 1: to be asleep that they were promised a casual threesome.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Unfortunately for these men, Dominique, his lawyers, and the conversations
- 48:52Speaker 1: on Coco dot fr poked a massive hole in their
- 48:56Speaker 1: shitty little lies. The day after Dominique had been a rested,
- 49:00Speaker 1: all three Pelico children traveled to see Chazelle in Avignon
- 49:03Speaker 1: to support her something. David and Florian they were searching
- 49:09Speaker 1: their father's personal belongings, his books, his boxes, anything for
- 49:12Speaker 1: a clue. Caroline, however, was angry. She started smashing plates.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Her childhood, her life, her father, everything was a lie.
- 49:23Speaker 1: She wanted to tear it all down. There was a
- 49:27Speaker 1: painting that hung, one that she had always wanted, one
- 49:31Speaker 1: that she had asked her father for when he passed.
- 49:35Speaker 1: It was the painting of a naked woman from behind,
- 49:38Speaker 1: painted by Dominique. Caroline raced towards it, tore at it,
- 49:44Speaker 1: ripping the canvas off the wall. Then she saw on
- 49:49Speaker 1: the back a word, a word that sent a rage
- 49:52Speaker 1: flying through her body. The painting was named Coercion. Chazelle
- 49:59Speaker 1: was desperate for normal sake. Caroline wanted to turn the
- 50:02Speaker 1: house to ash, like her memories. It wasn't long before
- 50:07Speaker 1: they were brought to the police station in question. Caroline
- 50:11Speaker 1: point blank as the officer's if her father ever showed remorse.
- 50:16Speaker 1: They told her no. To make matters worse, the police
- 50:20Speaker 1: informed Caroline than along with the thousands of pictures and
- 50:22Speaker 1: videos of Gazelle being assaulted, there were also pictures of
- 50:26Speaker 1: other women. Caroline was showing a picture of a woman
- 50:32Speaker 1: lying on a bed in her underwear. The light was
- 50:35Speaker 1: on and the covers were off. She looked like she
- 50:38Speaker 1: was intoxicated and posed. Caroline then came to the shocking
- 50:44Speaker 1: realization that the young woman in the picture was her.
- 50:48Speaker 1: The photo had been shared on the forum under the
- 50:51Speaker 1: title of My horror of a daughter. Another was superimposed
- 50:56Speaker 1: to a picture of unconscious Gazelle, and there had male
- 51:02Speaker 1: genitalia superimposed onto the image too. Caroline returned to the
- 51:09Speaker 1: house in Mazan. She was terrified had she been abused
- 51:13Speaker 1: by her own father. She was suspicious, and so were
- 51:16Speaker 1: her brothers. That night, she didn't want to sleep alone Gazelle,
- 51:21Speaker 1: fear that if she joined her, if she snuggled up
- 51:24Speaker 1: next to her daughter in that room, that she would break.
- 51:27Speaker 1: She couldn't allow that. She felt like she had to
- 51:30Speaker 1: adorn armor to survive tragedy, and she wanted to get
- 51:34Speaker 1: her life back. She wanted the comfort of her own
- 51:37Speaker 1: bed hers. Florian dragged his mattress into his sister's room
- 51:44Speaker 1: and slept on the floor as to not leave her alone.
- 51:48Speaker 1: The next day, Caroline was speaking to a psychologist who
- 51:50Speaker 1: suggested that it was highly likely that she had been
- 51:54Speaker 1: raped by her father, a suggestion that was supported by
- 51:58Speaker 1: Dominique's brother. Chazelle was still grasping what was happening to
- 52:06Speaker 1: her family. She told them nothing could be ruled out,
- 52:09Speaker 1: but they had to wait for the evidence to come in.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Gazelle would go on to say that this would sound
- 52:14Speaker 1: like denial to her children's eels, but to her, this
- 52:18Speaker 1: was leaving it open until it was confirmed. Now I
- 52:21Speaker 1: get where Rozelle's coming from. She's hoping that she didn't
- 52:24Speaker 1: fall in love with someone who could rape his own daughter.
- 52:27Speaker 1: She doesn't want to believe it. Caroline just breaks down
- 52:32Speaker 1: and emergency services are called. They take her to the
- 52:35Speaker 1: psychiatric emergency room and then she spends the night on
- 52:38Speaker 1: a psych ward under observation. Well she's there. The police
- 52:44Speaker 1: speak to the rest of the Pelico and they start
- 52:47Speaker 1: thinking back to things that you know, we're odd at
- 52:50Speaker 1: the time, but now seemed nefarious. They mentioned the grandchildren
- 52:57Speaker 1: talking about trying to wake up Mammonu into nineteen but
- 53:00Speaker 1: couldn't and they got scared. They'd mentioned seeing strange flashing
- 53:06Speaker 1: red lights when they played by the pool. They brought
- 53:09Speaker 1: up how their grandfather offered to get them sweets if
- 53:12Speaker 1: they took off their clothes, and how he grumbled how
- 53:14Speaker 1: they never wanted to play doctor anymore with him. Doctor
- 53:18Speaker 1: involved them having to take their clothes off. Things that
- 53:22Speaker 1: seemed awe for innocuous at the time now had everyone
- 53:26Speaker 1: ready to explode. In a small grace, there were no
- 53:31Speaker 1: visits from the Cocoa Forum when the grandchildren were around.
- 53:38Speaker 1: It would also come to light that hidden cameras were
- 53:42Speaker 1: placed around the house and photos were taken of both
- 53:45Speaker 1: of his daughters in law daughter in laws one of
- 53:48Speaker 1: those is correct. Cracks would begin to show in the family.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Pilgon Florian would return to the house and Mazan with
- 54:03Speaker 1: his mother to clear it of what they could. Anything
- 54:06Speaker 1: that could be sold was swiftly and cheaply. They just
- 54:10Speaker 1: wanted it gone. Remember Dominique's terrible business acumen. Well, when
- 54:16Speaker 1: they were clearing the house, they uncovered buckets and buckets
- 54:19Speaker 1: of debt that he had sunk the family into, and
- 54:23Speaker 1: so much, if not all, of it was in Gazelle's name.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Caroline once again was upset, fearing that she was going
- 54:31Speaker 1: to be thrown into poverty to pay for her father's
- 54:33Speaker 1: debts now that he was in prison. Gizelle had always
- 54:37Speaker 1: been frugal, she thought that she could figure out a
- 54:40Speaker 1: debt re payment plan. She had been a bookkeeper, after all,
- 54:43Speaker 1: she knew how to manage her numbers. Gazelle left the
- 54:48Speaker 1: Yellow House the color of Provence with two suitcases and
- 54:53Speaker 1: her bulldog Lancom to get ready to divorce Dominique and
- 54:57Speaker 1: get her life back. In the following months, Gazelle reconnected
- 55:01Speaker 1: with an old friend, Pascal One, who had left her
- 55:04Speaker 1: life thanks to Dominique being an absolute creep. She divorced
- 55:08Speaker 1: Dominique and took back her maiden name, Jozelle Guilleux. She
- 55:12Speaker 1: spoke to her children, grandchildren, and psychiatrist who was available
- 55:16Speaker 1: every hour of the day just in case. That first
- 55:21Speaker 1: Christmas was tough on the Pellico, Gazelle had been staying
- 55:25Speaker 1: with Florian, Her daughter Caroline Wroughte Maxim to visit, but
- 55:28Speaker 1: she was struggling to be around her mother because she
- 55:31Speaker 1: felt that her mother didn't want to believe that she
- 55:33Speaker 1: married a man who would abuse his own children and grandchildren.
- 55:39Speaker 1: She felt that her mother didn't believe that anything had
- 55:43Speaker 1: happened to her. In February twenty twenty one, Dominique Pelico
- 55:48Speaker 1: would receive an eight month suspended sentence for the upskirting
- 55:51Speaker 1: incident in the supermarket. While Dominique was behind bars, the
- 55:55Speaker 1: police were investigating about two years, trying to uncover every
- 56:02Speaker 1: man involved in this horrible scheme, but the identities of
- 56:07Speaker 1: these men were not all they found. Two cold case
- 56:12Speaker 1: investigators had traveled to the Morcer prison to visit Dominique
- 56:15Speaker 1: in October twenty twenty two, and they believed that he
- 56:18Speaker 1: was connected to two crimes in knuants in nineteen ninety
- 56:21Speaker 1: one and nineteen ninety nine, Sophie Noon and a woman
- 56:26Speaker 1: referred to only as Estella. On the fourth of December
- 56:31Speaker 1: nineteen ninety one, Sophi Noon, a real estate agent in
- 56:35Speaker 1: her early twenties, was expecting to show an apartment in
- 56:38Speaker 1: northeast Paris. The appointment had been made under a false
- 56:43Speaker 1: name and When Sophie showed up, chemicals were used to
- 56:46Speaker 1: subdue her. She had been tied, stabbed, raped, and killed.
- 56:55Speaker 1: On the eleventh of May nineteen ninety nine, another real
- 56:57Speaker 1: estate agent in her twenties, Estella, arrived at a viewing
- 57:02Speaker 1: which would later be discovered to be under a false
- 57:04Speaker 1: name too. Estella let the man into the apartment when
- 57:08Speaker 1: he suddenly grabbed her by the throat, held a box
- 57:11Speaker 1: cutter to her carotid artery. He forced her onto her stomach,
- 57:14Speaker 1: tied her hands behind her back, and pressed a compress
- 57:18Speaker 1: soaked an ether over her mouth. Ether the chemical that
- 57:24Speaker 1: the Victorians deemed too dangerous, Ether the people whose wallpaper
- 57:31Speaker 1: was poisoning them. As Estella started to go under, the
- 57:37Speaker 1: attacker took off her shoes and trousers and made her
- 57:40Speaker 1: touch him. Somehow, she managed to fight back and escape.
- 57:45Speaker 1: DNA was still in its infancy really at this point,
- 57:47Speaker 1: and some was taken from Estella's shoe and the carpet
- 57:51Speaker 1: of the apartment. Traces of this DNA would be a
- 57:55Speaker 1: match for the DNA sample taken back from that first
- 57:59Speaker 1: upscore smarting arrest. Back in twenty ten, Dominique admitted to
- 58:05Speaker 1: seeing Estella through a real estate agency window, was taken
- 58:09Speaker 1: over with lust and lost all impulse control. Even though
- 58:14Speaker 1: he clearly committed a premeditated attack, he did not agree
- 58:17Speaker 1: that this was an attempted rape. The DNA from Sophie's
- 58:22Speaker 1: case had somehow disappeared. Gazelle was contacted regarding the murder
- 58:29Speaker 1: and attempted rape. Now, the attempted rape is one thing,
- 58:33Speaker 1: because she knew that he was capable of that, But
- 58:37Speaker 1: she didn't believe that her husband was capable of cold
- 58:39Speaker 1: blooded murder. I mean, no one wants to believe that
- 58:44Speaker 1: they were married to a monster. The Biblical rape trial
- 58:49Speaker 1: was garnering public attention, and Gazelle was upset that her
- 58:53Speaker 1: lawyer seemed to be chasing the femme train, giving soundbites
- 58:56Speaker 1: into every microphone she came across. Now, Gazelle had relocated
- 59:01Speaker 1: to the Il Delou somewhere far away from the bad memories.
- 59:05Speaker 1: She had found community and connection. It was here that
- 59:09Speaker 1: she would be connected to a new lawyer, one who
- 59:11Speaker 1: wouldn't be the drama who wanted their name in lights. Now.
- 59:15Speaker 1: She wanted someone sturdy who would support her through the trial,
- 59:19Speaker 1: and she found two men, Stiffan and Antoine. Initially, Chazelle
- 59:27Speaker 1: was going to be anonymous. She went through the name
- 59:29Speaker 1: options Francoise Marie p Options to protect her and her family.
- 59:36Speaker 1: When on the ill delay, she got a second chance
- 59:38Speaker 1: at love, Jean Loupe, a widower who matched her energy.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Her children were delighted that she found someone. As the
- 59:49Speaker 1: trail grew closer, Joselle was forced to face the evidence
- 59:52Speaker 1: and watch each and every video of her being raped,
- 59:56Speaker 1: each one more horring than the last. Husband, a man
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: she did not know, a man she did. Gratuitous lingerie,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: her body flopping, limp lifeless, a courgette, a man forcing
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: fillatio on the comatose women, the sound of choking, suffocating
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: coming from her men using her every orifice, never with protection,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: and her husband filmed the whole thing. Just before the trial,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Gaselle had a revelation what happened to her men within
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: a fifty kilometer radius of her home had done this
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: to her, at least eighty three fifty of which she
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: would see in court. She decided to be brave to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: not give them the ability to hide, and that shame
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: had to switch sides. She should not be shamed for
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: being the victim of an attack, it's the attack or
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: who should feel shame. Basically, she could keep her ex
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: husband and the rapist's name out of the press, but
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: instead she said, fuck this for a game of souldiersh
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: just did it. She told her lawyers, who were shocked.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: They wanted to make sure that she was prepared for
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: the onslaught of the press, media and public opinion. But
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Giselle was determined. When the court came into session, in
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: one of the five judges presence, Yes, it's a five
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: judge trial. One queried whether she wanted an open court.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Waiving anonymity like this was not a thing that was done.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: It was usually done in closed court. It usually kept
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: the press out and it kept names out of the papers.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: The defense tried to argue for a closed court, but
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: unfortunately for them, that choice lays with the prosecution, not them.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Gazelle wanted to ensure that if any other woman woke
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: up with Giselle wanted to ensure that if any other
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: women woke up questioning their memories, they might remember the
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: testimony of miss Pilicon. No woman should suffer from being
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: drugged and victimized. Other than Dominique, defendants came from all
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: walks of life, with most of them within the fifty
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: kilometer the thirty mile radius of the Pilico village of Mazan.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: They were firefighters, security guards, soldiers, lorry drivers, journalists, and
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a dj which earned them the name Mercieus de lemon
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: mister Everyman. Most of them had children. Many of the
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: men challenged the rape accusations. Some said they thought she
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: was in honor. Others laughed off, saying that if they
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: wanted to rape somebody, it wouldn't be a woman in
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: her sexties. Some men admitted it, one apologized. Dominique clearly
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: admitted that he facilitated the raping of his wife and
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: that these men were rapists. The men ranged in age
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: between twenty seven and seventy six. Fifty were brought to trial,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: and two had died before the trial came to the courts.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Thirty three of the accused were walking free until the verdict,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: eighteen were held in custody, and one was being tried
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: in absentia. The fifty one men were represented by forty
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: nine separate lawyers, oh and the maximum sentence for rape
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: in France was twenty years each. Some of the men
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: apologized for their behavior. Many have not, and because I'm
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: a petty bitch, I'm going to tell you all of
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: their names. Dominique Pilicot guilty of aggravated rape on his
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: ex wife Chazelle. Also guilty of the attempted aggravated rape
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: of the wife of one of the co accused, Jean

- 1:13:51Speaker 1: mince her words. She told the men that none of
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: them were forced to rape heart, They did not have
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: a gun to their head. Not one reported what was
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: happening victually those who left. She was composed, She was authoritative,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and because she had her name, she wanted to give
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: her grandchildren a name to be proud of, not that
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: of a monster, but that of a woman who stood
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: up and fought for justice. Throughout the case, she received
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: letters from victims, women who had suffered and saw her
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: as a symbol. She kept them in a beautiful box.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: She moved to the Il Delu and is moving on
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: with her life. She's hoping to rebuild connections with their
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: children and grandchildren. Her grandson Nathan is pressing charges against
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: his grandfather. Florian is divorced now because of everything that
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: had happened. Their family is broken, because of every horrible
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: act that Dominique decided to do. Gaselle held her head
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: eye she walked into that courtroom. Her character was attacked,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: her looks, her age, her complicity. Everything was under scrutiny.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: She could have shriveled away in head, but instead she
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: took a stand. That is the story of Giselle Pelico,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: a woman determined to live her life with joy, happy
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: International Women's Day. Now, as you can tell, I was
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: getting kind of full of angry enrage near at the
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: end of this story. And that's that is just how
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: this story makes me feel. Because even in France, like
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: rape is considered something that happens under it's like violence, coercion,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: surprise attack, right, It's a violent act. And because because
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Groselle was under because she was knocked out, that these issues,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: it was something they couldn't really pinpoint, so they had
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: to redefine what this was. Because consent, the concept of
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: consent legally is such a great area in France, and
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: I think with everything that's going on now, we really
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: need to take things like that on board, and I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: think we need to respect people like Gizelle Pellicle. As
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: a direct result of Gizell and everything that she went
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: through and coming forward, the French Parliament has ratified an
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: amendment to add consent to the legal definition of sexual
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: assault and rape. This only came through in twenty twenty five,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: This is incredibly recent because previously rape or sexual abuse
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: in France had been defined as any form of sexual
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: penetration committed with the use of violence, coercion, threat, or surprise.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Now the law will say that all sexual acts done
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: to another without consent constitute rape. This change is the
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: result of cross party years long debate which came to
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: the forefront because of the Pellicle rape trail and because
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: of the advocacy the advocacy right of Chazelle Pellico. Happy
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: International Women's Day, and I'm going to be nice and
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: swift here at the end. I'm going to talk to
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: you about well, yeah, recommendations time because I do it
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: every episode, may as well as out here too. For
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: listening Ghosted by Roz Fernandez because you need to break
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: at this point. For reading if you get the chance,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Hymn to Life by Jaselle Pellico in for watching again.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: To just give you some joy in the world, go
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: watch North of North and demand that Netflix give a
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: second season because it's really good. And with that, I'm
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: going to bid you a due. Happy International Women's Day.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Adios au revoir of What is Them? My friends, Bye bye,
